      • "content": "Martin Moskowicz is well known to many in the industry attending Cannes . An ever-present at major festivals and markets for close to 50 years, he is best known for his decades steering German production and distribution giant Constantin, producer of the Resident Evil franchise. Last year Moskowicz moved away from his role as CEO and is now producing. In an exclusive guest column for Deadline, the respected industry vet gives his take on this year’s Cannes Film Festival and market. It’s a market that many we’ve spoken to have been down on, in part due to shifts in the global business. The festival, conversely, has kicked off with a string of well-received movies. Here’s Moskowicz’s take on the current landscape and the need to stay level headed but also to be bold. Each May, as predictably as the sun rises over the Croisette, the annual chorus of complaints begins. Distributors — dear friends and colleagues — lament the same familiar woes: not enough films, or too many; the best titles are overpriced; the coffee is terrible; the weather is unbearable — too hot, too cold or both. It’s tradition. Almost comforting in its predictability. Watch on Deadline And yet, Cannes itself is never static. It reinvents, reflects and reshapes itself in step with the beautiful, ever-shifting rhythm of our industry. What was once a marketplace of faxes and frantic phone calls has become a digital, global arena — shaped by streaming platforms, changing release strategies and a new generation of auteurs redefining what cinema can be. This year, the selection of Mascha Schilinski ’s new film In die Sonne schauen (Sound of Falling) for the Official Competition is a perfect example of Cannes at its best — sharp, responsive and artistically bold. What an inspired, timely choice. In a world full of noise, the ability to recognize a singular voice and give it the spotlight it deserves is a reminder of why Cannes still matters. RELATED: ‘Sound Of Falling’ Review: Mascha Schilinski’s Superb Feature Is A Masterclass In Ethereal, Unnerving Brilliance – Cannes Film Festival But allow me a moment of directness: Listen up, my friends — especially those of you in the large companies working in both production and distribution. The market is what we make of it. This isn’t toothpaste. It’s not screws. There is no fixed demand curve for cinema. We define the size of the market through the stories we choose to tell, the risks we take and the quality we deliver. If we stop making bold, distinctive films, the market will shrink — and then you shrink your operations, and the market shrinks even further. A downward spiral. But if we commit to excellence, originality and emotional truth, the audience will follow. They always have. So complain about the coffee if you must. But don’t lose sight of this: The future of our industry is in our hands. And Cannes — for all its flaws, its chaos, its maddening logistics — remains the one place each year where that future still feels genuinely possible.",

      • "content": "May 17, 2025 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked reputable news agency proofread by Todd Richmond A Wisconsin angler fishing in the fog this week discovered the wreck of an abandoned tugboat submerged in the waters of Lake Michigan for more than a century, state officials announced Friday. Wisconsin Historical Society Maritime Archaeologist Tamara Thomsen said that the society confirmed that Christopher Thuss found the wreck of the J.C. Ames. Thuss was fishing in Lake Michigan off the city of Manitowoc in foggy conditions on Tuesday when he noticed the wreckage in nine feet of water off a breakwater, she said in a message to The Associated Press. The society said that according to the book \"Green Bay Workhorses: The Nau Tug Line,\" the Rand and Burger shipbuilding company in Manitowoc built the J.C. Ames in 1881 to help move lumber. The tug was one of the largest and most powerful on the Great Lakes, with a 670-horsepower engine. The tug served multiple purposes beyond moving lumber, including transporting railway cars. It eventually fell into disrepair and was scuttled in 1923, as was the practice then when ships outlived their usefulness, Thomsen said. The ship had been buried in the sand at the bottom of the lake for decades before storms this winter apparently revealed it, Thomsen said. A lack of quagga mussels attached to the ship indicates it was only recently exposed, she said. Historians are racing to locate shipwrecks and downed planes in the Great Lakes before quagga mussels destroy them. Quagga have become the dominant invasive species in the lower lakes over the last 30 years, attaching themselves to wooden shipwrecks and sunken aircraft in layers so thick they eventually crush the wreckage. \"These kinds of discoveries are always so exciting because it allows a piece of lost history to resurface. It sat there for over a hundred years and then came back on our radar completely by chance,\" Thomsen said in a statement. \"We are grateful that Chris Thuss noticed the wreck and reported it so we can share this story with the Wisconsin communities that this history belongs to.\" © 2025 The Associated Press. • "description": "Starbucks is investing in more hours for baristas as other restaurant chains go in on AI.",
      • "content": "Starbucks is investing in more shifts for baristas at its stores.Mark Makela/ReutersStarbucks is staffing up thousands of US stores with additional staffing.Analysts say the investment in people could boost Starbucks' turnaround — if deployed correctly. It's a sharp contrast with other restaurant chains, which are using more AI and automation.AI is taking drive-thru orders at Wendy's, and Chipotle uses machines to prep avocados for its guacamole.Starbucks, however, is turning to a different solution: People. The coffee chain said in its latest earnings report that it plans to staff up its stores over the next several months. The reason: The efficiency-oriented machines that it's spent the last few years using just weren't good enough at speeding up drink production as good ol' humans. Some of the additional staffing will involve hiring more baristas, a company spokesperson said. In other cases, Starbucks will give additional shifts to existing baristas or pull in workers from one store to fill in at another to fill in.\"They're realizing that there's more to it, and solving some of the throughput and other experience issues they need to fix is going to require more labor,\" said R.J. Hottovy, the head of analytical research at Placer.aiAs it staffs up stores, Starbucks is also rolling out a new algorithm that will determine the order in which baristas make drinks. That will help baristas make drinks more efficiently with those extra shifts, the company has said.By the end of September, the new labor model and the algorithm will be in about 3,000 US stores, Niccol said on last month's earnings call.Starbucks provides a counter-example to a broader restaurant industry trend. While many other chains are automating processes, especially with AI, the Seattle-based company is acknowledging that there might be limits to what machines can do.At Starbucks, machines haven't been as effective as peopleOver the last few years, Starbucks rolled out the Siren System, which made a series of equipment and process improvements meant to speed up the production of cold beverages like frappuccinos. At the end of April, though, CEO Brian Niccol said that Starbucks would halt the system's use as it invested more in adding shifts for its baristas.\"We're finding through our work that investments in labor rather than equipment are more effective\" at making orders quickly, Niccol said during the company's earnings call. The additional workers also mean that store employees are \"able to greet customers, hand off orders personally, be available for customer questions and requests, and more,\" Starbucks said. \"Customers appreciate these memorable, more personal moments in our community coffeehouses.\"Earlier this year, Starbucks tried out the additional baristas at 700 stores, Niccol said on the company's earnings call. Those stores saw a growth in transactions, he added.Still, spending more on people has its risks.Starbucks will have to make the additional shifts work across in-store, pick-up, and drive-thru orders, said Sujay Saha, founder and president of Cortico-X, a consulting firm focused on customer experience. Some baristas have told BI that their stores have been overwhelmed by the number of orders that they have to fill, especially those that customers place through the Starbucks mobile app.Niccol has said that he wants Starbucks to provide both quick coffee and food to go as well as more personal service for customers who want to hang out in-store.\"That is an experience that some customers need,\" Saha said of Niccol's focus on connections between patrons and baristas. \"But some customers just need to get the coffee and head out.\"More baristas could improve Starbucks' customer experienceSome baristas told Business Insider that they are skeptical that the extra workers will make a difference. The baristas declined to be identified by name, citing potential retaliation from Starbucks, but BI has verified their identity and work for Starbucks. One Starbucks worker at a store in New Mexico said that she and her colleagues are overwhelmed and need the extra shifts — something that's apparent to store visitors and could deter job applicants.\"People know they're going to be overwhelmed, overworked, and under-compensated,\" the employee said.Another barista, based in a store in Ohio, said that the additional staffing are welcome news since their manager usually steps in to help when they are understaffed during a busy period.\"The only day my store manager was not on the floor working with us were Monday's,\" the employee said.Another employee, who works at a store in North Carolina, said that the location is struggling to keep employees between understaffing and recent changes to Starbucks' dress code.\"I'll believe it when I see it,\" the employee said when asked about Niccol's announcement of additional shifts.Employing people still costs money. Starbucks' shares dipped roughly 7% as the company announced the additional investment in labor.Executives said that they plan to offset the costs by applying zero-based budgeting to Starbucks' expenditures. The measure determines spending by asking managers to justify each expense rather than using last year's budget as a baseline.Paying for more person-power isn't cheap, but it does fit in with Niccol's goal of making Starbucks a place that customers want to keep coming back to, Placer.ai's Hottovy said. Visits to Starbucks stores fell 0.9% in the first quarter, according to foot traffic data from Placer.ai.Additional staffing — and better customer service — could get patrons to stop by more frequently, Hottovy said.\"At the end of the day, it's really your employees that make the experience,\" he added.Do you work at Starbucks and have a story idea to share? Investors have until July 11, 2025, to ask the Court to be appointed to lead the case. The complaint asserts claims under Sections 10(b) and 20(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 on behalf of investors who purchased Elevance common stock. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and is captioned Miller v. Elevance Health, Inc., et al. , No. 25-cv-0092. Why was Elevance Sued for Securities Fraud? Elevance provides health insurance plans. This includes contracting with states to administer Medicaid benefits. States routinely review Medicaid eligibility, but during COVID, the federal government paused this process. The pause ended in 2023, and states resumed redetermining Medicaid eligibility. During the relevant period, Elevance represented that it was closely monitoring the cost trends associated with the redetermination process and that the rates Elevance was negotiating were sufficient to address the risk profiles of those patients staying on Medicaid. As alleged, in truth, the redeterminations caused a significant increase in the acuity and utilization of Elevance's Medicaid members. What's more, the shift occurred to a degree that was not reflected in Elevance's rate negotiations or in its financial guidance for 2024. The Stock Declines as the Truth is Revealed On July 17, 2024, Elevance stated that it was now \"expecting second-half utilization to increase in Medicaid\" and that it was \"seeing signs of increased utilization across the broader Medicaid population.\" On this news, the price of Elevance stock declined $32.21 per share, or nearly 6%, from $553.14 per share on July 16, 2024, to $520.93 per share on July 17, 2024. Then, on October 17, 2024, Elevance announced its Q3 2024 financial results, revealing that its missed consensus earnings per share (\"EPS\") expectations by $1.33, or 13.7%, \"due to elevated medical costs in [its] Medicaid business.\" On this news, the price of Elevance stock declined $52.61 per share, or nearly 11%, from $496.96 per share on October 16, 2024, to $444.35 per share on October 17, 2024. Investors have until July 8, 2025, to ask the Court to be appointed to lead the case. The complaint asserts claims under Sections 10(b) and 20(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 on behalf of investors who purchased Compass securities. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and is captioned Matthews v. Compass Group Diversified Holdings, Inc., et al. , No. 25-cv-981. Why was Compass Sued for Securities Fraud? Compass is a statutory trust that acquires and manages a group of small and middle-market businesses. This includes Lugano Holdings, Inc., a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of high-end jewelry. The complaint alleges that the Company's fiscal 2024 financial statements contained material misstatements relating to unrecorded financing arrangements and irregularities identified in sales, cost of sales, inventory, and accounts receivable recorded by Lugano. The Stock Declines as the Truth is Revealed On May 7, 2025, after the market closed, Compass announced that investors should not rely on its fiscal 2024 financial statements amid an ongoing internal investigation, led by outside counsel and a forensic accounting firm, into Lugano. The Company stated that it has \"preliminarily identified irregularities in Lugano's non-CODI financing, accounting, and inventory practices.\" The Company also announced that it intended to delay the filing of its Q1 2025 financial results, and that Lugano's founder and CEO, Moti Ferder, resigned from his positions at Lugano and will not receive any severance compensation. On this news, the price of Compass stock declined roughly 62%, from $17.25 per share on May 7, 2025, to $6.55 per share on May 8, 2025. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and is captioned Priewe v. BigBear.ai Holdings, Inc., et al. , No. 25-cv-00623. Why was BigBear.ai Sued for Securities Fraud? BigBear.ai is an AI-driven technology solutions company that helps organizations operationalize AI by analyzing complex data and providing actionable insights in areas of national security, supply chain management, and digital identity and biometrics solutions. BigBear.ai went public via a special purpose acquisition company (\"SPAC\") transaction, completing merging first with GigCapital4 Merger Sub Corporation, and subsequently with GigCapital4, Inc. Upon completion of the merger, BigBear.ai issued $200 million of unsecured convertible notes with a maturity date of December 15, 2026. During the relevant period, BigBear.ai improperly accounted for the 2026 Convertible Notes, causing it to misstate various items in several of the Company's previously issued financial statements. The Stock Declines as the Truth is Revealed On March 18, 2025, BigBear.ai delayed the filing of its 2024 10K, disclosing that certain of the Company's financial statements since fiscal year 2021 should no longer be relied upon and would be restated. On this news, the price of BigBear.ai stock declined roughly 15%, from a closing price of $3.49 per share on March 17, 2025, to $2.97 per share on March 18, 2025. Then, on March 25, 2025, after market, BigBear filed its 2024 10-K restating its consolidated financial statements \"to reflect the issuance of the 2026 Notes Conversion Option at fair value as of December 7, 2021 and the subsequent remeasurement to fair value at each reporting date.\" The 2024 10-K also disclosed that the Company had identified a material weakness in its internal control over financial reporting. On this news, the price of BigBear.ai stock declined roughly 9%, from a closing price of $3.51 per share on March 25, 2025, to $3.19 per share on March 26, 2025.

Milli, has been charged in connection with a string of armed robberies around Oakland, after police identified his Dodge Charger as the vehicle used by the suspects. When Oakland cops surveilled him in Vallejo, they reportedly witnessed a 17-year-old girl walk away from a high-prostitution area and get into Collins’ car, according to court records. The girl told police that Collins had trafficked her in Vallejo, San Francisco and Oakland, and that she turned over the proceeds to him. She said that he helped her book hotels because she was underage, authorities allege. After Collins was arrested, he allegedly called his girlfriend, 34-year-old Caprecia Zayas, and discussed ways they could prevent the girl from continuing to cooperate with police. • "description": "Microsoft plans to invest $80 billion in AI data centers in 2025, with over half allocated to US facilities. This 44% increase from 2024 will build capacity for AI training and cloud applications. The expansion supports Microsoft's OpenAI partnership and reflects their push for American AI dominance amid international competition, especially with China.",
      • "content": "Microsoft’s AI trajectory has reached a critical inflection point as CEO Satya Nadella navigates the company through what he describes as a transformative era for technology. The Redmond giant is positioning itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence development, committing approximately $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to build AI-enabled datacenters for training models and deploying AI solutions.AI Investment StrategyIn a January 2025 vision statement, Microsoft outlined a three-pronged approach to cementing America’s technology leadership. This strategy focuses first on advancing and investing in world-leading American AI technology and infrastructure. The company views AI as “the electricity of our age,” drawing parallels to how electrical innovation revolutionized the economy a century ago.“Not since the invention of electricity has the United States had the opportunity it has today to harness new technology to invigorate the nation’s economy,” Microsoft stated in its policy vision document. The company is building on foundational AI policies established during former President Trump’s first term, particularly the 2019 executive order designed to strengthen America’s position in artificial intelligence.Microsoft’s significant financial commitment comes amid increasing competition in the AI space, with its partnership with OpenAI remaining a cornerstone of its strategy. This collaboration has yielded consumer-facing products like Copilot, which has become increasingly integrated across Microsoft’s product ecosystem.Balancing Innovation and RiskDespite aggressive AI investments, Microsoft appears to be taking a measured approach to product development. According to reporting from Windows Central, the company has developed what some insiders describe as a “post-traumatic stress disorder” from past technological embarrassments, dating back to experiences with products like Clippy, Microsoft’s much-maligned virtual assistant from the late 1990s.This institutional caution reflects the challenges of deploying AI at scale while maintaining reliability. The company has experienced several high-profile AI mishaps in recent years, which have apparently influenced its current risk tolerance. In recent public appearances, Nadella has spoken about AI agents potentially serving as “chiefs of staff” for users, handling complex tasks and managing information flows. This vision represents a significant evolution from current AI assistants, suggesting Microsoft sees these tools eventually becoming indispensable workplace companions rather than mere utilities.Integration Across Product LinesMicrosoft’s AI strategy extends well beyond standalone products, with integration efforts spanning its entire ecosystem. The company’s Copilot technology has expanded across applications including Microsoft 365, Windows, and enterprise tools. This pervasive integration approach aims to create a seamless AI experience regardless of which Microsoft product a customer is using.Particularly notable is Microsoft’s focus on education and workforce development as part of its AI vision. The second pillar of its three-part strategy emphasizes “skilling programs that will enable widespread AI adoption and enhanced career opportunities across the economy.” This approach recognizes that AI adoption requires not just technological advancement but also human capital development. The third element of Microsoft’s strategy involves exporting American AI to allies and partners, which the company believes will strengthen the domestic economy while ensuring other countries benefit from AI advancements. This international focus positions Microsoft’s AI efforts within a broader geopolitical context. As the company continues to refine its AI offerings, industry observers will be watching closely to see if Microsoft can maintain its balance between innovation and reliability. The substantial financial commitment Microsoft has made to AI infrastructure signals that, despite occasional caution, the company views artificial intelligence as central to its future and to America’s continued technological leadership.",

      • "description": "U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Peter Russin approved an auction process that would lead to the sale of regional airline Silver Airways and possibly its Seaborne Airlines affiliate.",
      • "content": "A federal bankruptcy judge in Fort Lauderdale has approved bidding procedures for regional carrier Silver Airways after obtaining lukewarm support from the troubled South Florida company’s leading creditors.U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Peter Russin also green-lighted the airline’s critical $5.5 million debtor-in-possession financing for operations from a lender that will also become the “stalking horse” bidder for an auction set for later this month. The judge acted after raising repeated concerns that there would not be enough money to pay all of the airline’s creditors.“I came out here today fully expecting to deny both motions” for the auction and financing, he told lawyers and a court gallery on Thursday that included more than a dozen Silver pilots, flight attendants and other employees. The approvals were critical for a heavily indebted airline that has been eking out an existence for more than four months with the help of interim court approvals to use the cash generated by operations. But the judge, who has insisted throughout the case that creditor interests are a high priority, opted to proceed with the auction after hearing from Silver’s top executive that he expects to draw “competing bids” for both Silver and its island-hopping affiliate, Seaborne Airlines.Cut off by its lenders last fall and unable to find a buyer, Silver filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last Dec. 30 with more than $100 million in debts. Seaborne, which operates a seaplane service in the U.S. Virgin Islands, is also flying under court protection. Silver serves five Florida destinations including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and 11 other locations in the Bahamas and Caribbean. The company dropped its Orlando service this spring after three planes were repossessed.Seaborne, which serves St. Thomas and St. Croix with a single plane, could become part of the sales process as bidders of varying stripes have expressed interest, the airlines’ management said in court Thursday. A separate sale of the carrier could well produce valuable cash to help pay off creditors, attorneys have said. But unpaid creditors would likely be left in the wilderness if no bidders arrive to top a $5.775 million “stalking horse” offer that would serve as the baseline bid at an auction. That bid was served up last month by KIA II LCC of Greenwich, Conn., an affiliate of Wexford Capital of West Palm Beach and Greenwich. In the hopes of obtaining clarity for what type of bidding an auction might generate, Russin summoned Silver CEO Steven Rossum to the witness stand. Rossum told the judge of a litany of marketing initiatives the company has undertaken since last year to sell the airline to another operator or investor. He also testified the airline has received a number of inquiries and expressions of interest.Silver Airways CEO Steven Rossum, shown recently at the company’s Hollywood headquarters, told a bankruptcy judge he expects there will be competitive bids for both Silver and its Seaborne Airlines affiliate. (Amy Beth Bennett / South Florida Sun Sentinel)“We’re very confident there will be competing bids for both Silver and Seaborne,” Rossum told the court. But only one expression of interest was made known to the court on Thursday.Interest from afarVia Zoom, an executive of an energy engineering firm testified he represents a group that is interested in buying Silver and, possibly, Seaborne.“We’re interested in working a bid that I believe would address all the issues you spoke about today,” said Angelo Scolari, an executive vice president for Rengen Energy Solutions, a firm listed online as being located in Mexico City. But Scolari did not identify the individuals who would be supporting the bid.The judge suggested that he understood that interested parties could not be specific for “business reasons” at this point in time. But he expressed frustration about the vagueness of what he has heard about would-be buyers and the company’s finances.“My concern here has been voiced ad nauseum,” Russin said. “‘Everyone’s being vague when the court is looking for certainty.”One of the chief uncertainties is Silver’s ability to stay current on its bills. The judge closely questioned Silver’s lead lawyer, Brian Hall, Rossum and CFO Pedro Motta about the airline’s ability to pay past due and future bills. While the airline is generating cash from its operations, Russin was told it appears that creditors likely will face a $3 million shortfall if no bidder steps up with an offer that supersedes the one from the stalking horse bidder.Given the limited choices, Russin polled the cadre of creditor lawyers in attendance both online and in court. Most voiced support for an auction, which would go forward at the end of this month. As of late Friday, a written order formalizing an auction date and procedures had yet to be posted in the court’s files.A hearing on a request to dismiss the case by the U.S. Trustee’s Office, whose role includes protecting creditor interests, has been postponed until late June. The office argues that the company has no prospects for recovery and favors a liquidation of the assets.",

      • "content": "Beats Studio Pro are headphones from Apple’s other audio sub-brand. The over-ears, which come with noise-cancelling and long battery life. Right now, they’re on offer for 51% off in Amazon’s Memorial Day sale, which has started now. Beats Studio Pro in dune finish Memorial Day isn’t until Monday, May 26, but things have started early and the Beats deal is one of the most eye-catching offers so far. The deal highlighted in this post was independently selected by the Contributor and does not contain affiliate links. Beats Studio Pro headphones are available in seven colors from Amazon at this link . The regular price for these headphones is $349.99, which is already almost $200 less than you’d pay for Apple’s AirPods Max. But now, in what Amazon describes as a limited-time deal, there’s 51% off, that’s a $180.04 cut and brings the sticker price down to $169.95. The colors available are black, deep brown, navy and sandstone. Those are the four colors Apple and Beats sell directly. Additionally, there’s moon and dune, which Apple no longer sells and which are part of Beats’ collaboration with Kim Kardashian. There’s one other color, matte white, also for the same $169.95 price but note that these were previously on sale for a lower price, $199.95, so the discount is smaller, just 15%. At the time of posting all are in stock. The headphones have noise-cancelling as well as transparency, to let the outside world in when you need to hear what’s going on. There’s also personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, which means that if you’re watching a video on an iPad, say, and if you turn your head away, the audio still comes from the same direction, as though it’s locked to the screen. Although they are made by Apple, Beats headphones are also designed to work well with Android phones. There are microphones which target voices to make them effective for calls. Battery life is up to 40 hours without noise-cancelling, or 24 hours with noise-cancelling. What’s called a Fast Fuel charge means 10 minutes of charging delivers up to four hours of playback.",

      • "description": "MIT withdrew support for a prominent AI research paper by doctoral student Aidan Toner-Rodgers, citing concerns over the integrity and validity of its data and findings. Following an internal review, MIT requested withdrawal from arXiv and other journals, highlighting broader challenges in maintaining research rigor in rapidly evolving AI fields.",
      • "content": "In a significant development that has sent ripples through the academic and technology communities, MIT has formally withdrawn its support for a widely-circulated research paper on artificial intelligence authored by a doctoral student in its economics program. The paper, titled “Artificial Intelligence, Scientific Discovery, and Product Innovation,” was posted as a preprint on arXiv in November 2024 and had garnered substantial attention from media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal. The Controversy UnfoldsOn May 16, 2025, MIT released a statement declaring that it “has no confidence in the provenance, reliability or validity of the data and has no confidence in the veracity of the research contained in the paper.” This extraordinary step came after an internal, confidential review conducted by the university’s Committee on Discipline (COD) following allegations regarding certain aspects of the research. The paper, authored by Aidan Toner-Rodgers, claimed to demonstrate that the implementation of an AI tool in a large materials-science laboratory led to significant increases in the discovery of new materials. These findings suggested potential substantial improvements in worker productivity through AI implementation in specific scientific settings. However, the paper also presented a more nuanced picture of AI’s impact, noting that most productivity gains benefited scientists who were already highly effective, while overall, the AI tool appeared to decrease scientists’ satisfaction with their work.MIT’s Unprecedented ActionIn its statement, MIT revealed it had contacted arXiv to formally request the withdrawal of the paper from the platform. The university also reached out to The Quarterly Journal of Economics, where the paper had been submitted for publication. The letter from MIT’s Committee on Discipline to arXiv states: “While student privacy laws and MIT policy prohibit the disclosure of the outcome of this review, we are writing to inform you that MIT has no confidence in the provenance, reliability or validity of the data and has no confidence in the veracity of the research contained in the paper.”MIT further noted that although only authors can submit withdrawal requests to arXiv, Toner-Rodgers had not done so despite being directed to take this action. The university therefore made the unusual move of directly requesting arXiv to mark the paper as withdrawn “as soon as possible” to clarify the research record.According to MIT’s statement, the author is no longer affiliated with the institution.Broader Implications for AI ResearchThis controversy emerges at a time when generative AI and its applications in various fields are under intense scrutiny. As reported by MIT Sloan, generative AI raises novel legal questions regarding data use and content regulation, with numerous cases centered on privacy concerns already in progress. The incident highlights the challenges facing academic institutions and publishers in maintaining research integrity in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. It also underscores the potential pitfalls in AI research, including what MIT has identified in other contexts as “hallucinations” and biases in generative AI outputs resulting from training data and design focus on pattern-based content.Industry Response and Future OutlookThe withdrawal of support for this high-profile paper may have significant implications for how AI research is vetted and published in the future. It raises questions about data verification protocols and the reproducibility of AI-related studies. This development comes as the AI industry continues to expand its influence across sectors, with companies and academic institutions investing heavily in research and development. The controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous standards in AI research, particularly as findings increasingly inform policy decisions and business strategies. As the situation continues to develop, the academic community will be watching closely to see what additional information might emerge about the specific concerns that led to MIT’s unprecedented action against research it had previously supported.",

• "content": "By Adam Graham, The Detroit News Being the Weeknd ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. That’s the big takeaway from “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” the Toronto pop superstar’s convoluted new psychological thriller, a self-indulgent look at the downside of being a mega-selling act in the midst of a gargantuan stadium tour. The Weeknd, aka Toronto native Abel Tesfaye, plays himself, the “Blinding Lights” hitmaker and one of the world’s most popular recording artists. (“Hurry Up Tomorrow” is also the name of his current album.) On the road, his life is a blur of cocaine, private jets and lonely hotel room hook-ups, and at a show he meets Anima (Jenna Ortega), a crazed fan who is escaping troubles of her own. We first meet Anima when she’s burning down the house of a lover, a bit of a behavioral red flag. Concurrently, Tesfaye is receiving texts and voicemails from a jilted ex, and you’re forgiven if you conflate Anima with that jilted ex, for script clarity is not the project’s strength. On tour, Tesfaye is pumped up by his cokehead manager Lee (Barry Keoghan), who delivers motivational messages (“You’re not human, you’re f—in’ invincible!”) when he needs to hear it most. But he’s another cog in a machine feeding off Tesfaye’s art and stardom, part of a system designed to keep the money flowing at all costs. There are insights into the haziness and empty highs of touring life, and co-writer and director Trey Edward Shults, the talented filmmaker who made “Krisha” and “Waves,” uses dizzying 360-degree pans to capture the whir of travel, backstage partying and onstage performance that gets mashed together from airport to hotel to venue, night after night. There’s also a scene where Tesfaye and Amina are eating breakfast at 4 p.m. and she casually mentions that’s a personal record. “Really? Not for me,” he tells her. But like HBO’s “The Idol,” another project where the Weeknd struggled to stretch his musical persona into narrative storytelling, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is held back by the star himself. He’s most comfortable onstage, and the concert footage offers a thrilling perspective of Tesfaye’s performance, but in scenes where he’s asked to emote and deliver dialogue, he’s stilted and jittery, and the emotional climax of the film elicited giggles from an audience full of fans. “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is an ambitious attempt to dramatize tour life and investigate the mindset of a performer as he’s on stage in front of 50,000 fans. But it is dragged down by a lack of emotional connection and the high-wire act of bridging reality and fiction in a way that feels truthful, as if the filmmakers’ best intentions were blinded by the lights. ——— ‘HURRY UP TOMORROW’ Grade: C MPA rating: R (for language throughout, drug use, some bloody violence and brief nudity) Running time: 1:45 How to watch: Now in theaters ——— ©2025 The Detroit News. • "content": "“Triangle and Sadness” and “Babygirl” star Harris Dickinson has delighted the Cannes crowd with his feature directorial debut “Urchin.” The film, led by “Fear the Walking Dead” star Frank Dillane and a vivid portrayal of homelessness and mental health on the streets of London, had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard competition. “Urchin” earned its new filmmaker and his cast an enthusiastic 5-minute ovation. Dickinson looked relieved at the reception, waving across the room to whoops from the crowd. “It’s really an honor to be here and to share it with you guy is special,” he told the audience before the screening. “I’m nervous. I hope you enjoy it and if you don’t, tell us gently.” Judging by the response, few didn’t enjoy it. Among those joining in the ovation was Paul Mescal, soon set to star alongside Dickinson in the upcoming quartet of films about The Beatles (Dickinson plays John Lennon to Mescal’s Paul McCartney). The two hugged after the screening and were seen arm in arm as they left the theater afterwards. Written by Dickinson, “Urchin” sees Dillane play Mike, a rough sleeper in the British capital trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as he attempts to turn his life around following a spell in prison. The film, both raw and absurd, and seeks to capture the strange patterns that keep pulling people back in. Megan Northam, Amr Waked, Karyna Khymchuk and Shonagh Marie also star. “Urchin” also marks Dickinson’s return to Cannes just three years after his breakout lead role in Ruben Ostlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” which would win the Palme d’Or and spark a major ascendency for the British actor. Since then, he has appeared in “Where the Crawdads Sing” alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, the Zac Efron-led wrestling drama “The Iron Claw,” Steve McQueen WWII drama “Blitz” and last year’s “Babygirl” with Nicole Kidman. “Urchin,” which also comes from Dickinson’s newly launched productioin banner Devisio, went into production once he had finished shooting “Babygirl” in early 2024. “Urchin” is produced by Archie Pearch for Devisio Pictures and Scott O’Donnell for Somesuch. Developed by BBC Film, it’s financed by BBC Film, BFI and Tricky Knot. Executive Producers are Eva Yates, Ama Ampadu, Alexandra Tynion and Olivia Tyson. Filming took place in East London. “Urchin” is currently being sold worldwide by Charades.",

      • "description": "The German writer-director follows ‘Afire’ with another chamber piece set in seemingly tranquil countryside that proves to be just the opposite.",
      • "content": "The path forward from trauma or pain, full of tricky psychological detours, has often been a haunting theme in the films of Christian Petzold . His latest, Miroirs No. 3 , centers on two women, one still working through a shattering loss and the other stuck in an existential malaise that may be rooted in her unsatisfying relationship or in more intangible factors. When the two strangers land in an unlikely domestic arrangement together, it initially seems restorative for them both. But neat and tidy dramas about emotional healing are not the gifted German writer-director’s thing. Like Petzold’s superb Chekhovian chamber piece, Afire , from 2023, the new film unfolds in a seemingly peaceful countryside setting disrupted by jagged tensions and unsettling changes, by connections and misconnections among people with very different needs. Miroirs No. 3 is less layered and surprising than its immediate predecessor in the director’s filmography, its moment of revelation telegraphed too early to have much impact. But Petzold is invariably a probing observer of his characters’ psyches, aided here by four excellent actors, including the incandescent Paula Beer in their fourth collaboration. Beer plays Laura, a piano student at a music academy in Berlin, first seen in the opening shots on an autobahn overpass looking down at a river. It’s unclear whether she is thinking about jumping, but her face is a map of quiet despair and isolation. She seems jolted, almost aggressed, when she gets home late to find her boyfriend Jakob (Philip Froissant) in a state of annoyed agitation. When he says he’s been trying to call her she mutters that she lost her bag, but he is impatient, focused only on the friends, Roger (Marcel Heuperman) and Debbi (Victoire Laly), waiting downstairs for them to head out of town for the weekend. Roger is a producer, and Jakob — presumably a filmmaker though that remains unspecified — has a lot riding on this weekend. Laura appears absent, barely listening to the conversation as they travel outside the city in Roger’s flashy, open-top sportscar. As soon as they reach their destination, she tells Jakob she doesn’t feel well and needs to go home. He seems barely able to contain his anger, but Roger tosses him the car keys and suggests he drive Laura to the train station. All three of them appear more put out than concerned that she is unwell. Earlier, on the journey from Berlin, Laura’s attention is caught by a woman painting the fence outside her front yard, who returns her gaze with the same kind of troubled curiosity. A similar encounter happens on the way to the station when Jakob’s erratic driving almost runs the car off the road and hits her. Moments after they speed off, the woman hears a crash; she runs to the scene to find the vehicle flipped in a field and Jakob thrown from the car, dead. The woman, whose name is Betty (Barbara Auer), takes Laura back to her home until the police and ambulance arrive. Aside from some scrapes and possibly a slight concussion, she is more dazed than injured. When the medic suggests she go to the hospital, Laura asks instead if she could stay at Betty’s while recovering. The older woman, who appears to live alone, seems taken aback only for a moment before showing Laura to the guest room of her house, which is comfortable but falling into disrepair. Petzold lets us draw our own conclusions about why Laura, after experiencing a major shock, would choose to stay with a complete stranger and why Betty would welcome her, though clues to the latter’s reasons quickly add up. Even from the little we know of Laura, it sort of makes sense that she would be eager to disappear into another life. In any case, Beer, who can seem at once guarded and emotionally transparent, handles Laura’s adjustment to the new environment with such naturalness and grace that we never question her motives. Betty gives Laura all the space she needs, leaving fresh clothes out for her, without explaining who previously owned them. Laura’s melancholia begins to lift as she finds pleasure in simple tasks like helping Betty finish painting the white picket fence or working in the garden. Still, although she’s an unfailingly kind host, there’s something unsettling about Betty’s fascination with her guest, conveyed with subtlety by Auer. And what are the judgy looks from villagers passing on the road about? Betty doesn’t volunteer an explanation and Laura doesn’t ask. As the two women get to know each other, it becomes clear Betty has had some kind of breakdown that alienated her husband Richard (Matthius Brandt) and mechanic son Max (Enno Trebs, so wonderful as the self-important novelist in Afire ). The first Laura hears of them is when she offers to cook potato dumplings and Betty says they are Richard and Max’s favorite dish, deciding to invite them to dinner. The arrival of the two men shifts the dynamic. They seem concerned that Betty is off her meds and rattled when they see a fourth place set for dinner. Only when Laura appears from the kitchen with the meal does its purpose become clear, but they act like they are seeing a ghost. Their silence comes off as rudeness, for which Betty rebukes them after dinner. She asks Max to repair a broken bicycle for Laura to use and she gets a piano tuner in to fix the neglected instrument in the living room corner. When, during a subsequent visit from Richard and Max, Laura plays the shimmering Ravel piece that gives the movie its title, Betty is delighted while the men appear uneasy. Richard becomes somewhat accepting of Betty’s houseguest and glad to be spending time with his wife after a break. Max takes longer, but he eventually warms to Laura when she starts dropping by his auto-shop. Even so, something about her presence in his family home doesn’t sit right with him. Well before this point, the cause — if not all the details — of the sadness lingering over the family will be obvious to most people watching, which makes it seem a stretch when Laura is taken by surprise, leaving her angry and humiliated. True, she has been floating around in a hazy alternate existence, putting her life on pause, but it seems implausible that she would see and hear the same clues we do and not piece the situation together. In the hands of a lesser actor and director, Laura might have been a frustrating cipher. Fortunately, Beer illuminates the character’s inner life and the uncertainties swirling around her path forward, even as she retains her mystery. She berates herself early on for not skipping the weekend with the producer and thereby causing the fatal accident. Then later, she confesses to Max that she’s not sad about Jakob, adding that they were not even a proper couple. The actress succeeds in bringing some psychological complexity to a script that otherwise has too little of it. All four principals add body to the rather slight drama, notably Auer (she appeared in Beer’s first film with the director, Transit , as well as his earlier feature, Yella ), whose intensity rarely obscures Betty’s damage. Using only diegetic music and shot in a crisp, unfussy style, with a preponderance of soft, natural light, the film is as spare and elegant as we have come to expect from Petzold. It’s a minor work for the director and its emotional heft feels softer than usual, but even his lesser films can be compelling, and Beer is never less than transfixing.",

      • "content": "OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — An Oklahoma law now makes it legally clear you can point or intimidate an individual with a weapon if you are defending your home, private property, or business.Governor Kevin Stitt signed House Bill 2818 on Thursday, which went into effect immediately. Oklahoma already has \"stand your ground\" laws when it comes to protecting your life, but language in the bill now expands to your property as well.HB2818-ENRDownload\"What this bill does is provide some clarity for where the Castle Doctrine is applied, and in this statute, thankfully signed by the governor two days ago, expands that boundary of our castle doctrine up to the edge of your property,\" said Rep. Jay Steagall (R-Yukon), who authored the bill in an interview over the phone with News 4 Friday.Lawmakers agree on Oklahoma budget, could see income tax cutSteagall said it's an effort that's been in the works for years, and was tentatively dubbed the \"Private Property Protection Act.\" During debate on the Oklahoma House floor in March, Steagall used Oklahoma's constitutional right to bear arms in reference to the law's justification. He said the bill was drafted with help from the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association, but at the time said he hadn't spoken with any law enforcement agencies or District Attorney's offices about potential implications of the bill.\"I think what the statute does is provide clarity for the court systems to help them determine what the actual boundary line is when it comes to our Castle Doctrine,\" said Steagall.Steagall faced hard questioning from Democrats in March, who questioned responsibilities for gun owners, how Oklahoma minors could interpret the law, and instances across the country where innocent people have been shot for knocking on doors or stepping into yards.News 4 spoke with Rep. Michelle McCane (D-Tulsa) Friday, who voted against the bill.\"I don't think that a threat to your person and a threat to your property are the same type of thing,\" said McCane.McCane said Steagall never provided testimonial from Oklahomans who would benefit from the law, and that she was also troubled by Steagall saying he hadn't met with agencies who would potentially have to deal with the aftermath.\"It was just a punishment bill,\" said McCane. \"I'd like to try to avoid just adding on punishments without having the conversations about all of the people and ways that it might have a negative impact.\"Steagall argued Oklahomans will still be in trouble for pointing a weapon as a joke or even out of anger, like in cases of road rage. He sees the opposition as blatantly targeting constitutional rights.\"Those that do not support our self-defense rights are going to push back against the bill like this in many ways, but our charge as elected officials is simple and that's to support and obey and defend the constitution, which is actually what this bill does,\" said Steagall.McCane said she doesn't see the issue as one side versus the other, arguing Democrats in Oklahoma have weapons as well.\"I think that this idea that people that are Democrats or are more on the left don't like guns is bizarre,\" said McCane.Steagall says even with the law given the go-ahead, he's always going to encourage Oklahomans who think they or their property is in danger to call police first. He argues there are rare instances though where that just can't happen fast enough.",

The data highlight RJVA-001's potential to deliver durable, nutrient-responsive GLP-1 secretion from pancreatic beta cells—mimicking natural hormone regulation with low circulating levels of GLP-1, offering a potentially profound mechanistic advantage over pharmacologic GLP-1 drugs. RJVA-001 also showed strong efficacy, targeted delivery, and a favorable safety profile, reinforcing its readiness for first-in-human studies. The data were featured in an oral presentation at ASGCT titled \"Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Delivery of Human Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Pancreatic Gene Therapy: Safety and Feasibility in a Porcine Model.\"\"RJVA-001 represents a fundamentally different approach to treating metabolic disease - one that delivers the power of GLP-1 in a more natural manner,\" said Professor Randy Seeley, Ph.D., Henry King Ransom Professor of Surgery and Director of Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Michigan School of Medicine. \"The ability to drive durable metabolic effects with physiologic hormone levels, from a one-time treatment, would be a scientific breakthrough with huge potential implications for patients. Treatment with RJVA-001 resulted in a >200 mg/dL reduction in fasting blood sugar, a >2-fold increase in fasting insulin levels, and prevention of weight gain, compared to a ~20% increase seen in vehicle-treated controls. These results demonstrate broad-based metabolic improvement in insulin secretion, weight gain, and blood sugar control in this gold-standard model of T2D. RJVA-001 achieved glycemic control and prevented weight gain with significantly lower systemic GLP-1 exposure than required by GLP-1 drugs to achieve similar effects: Circulating GLP-1 levels were more than 5-fold lower than those seen with pharmacologic GLP-1 drugs and were comparable to levels observed after gastric bypass surgery—suggesting a substantially lower risk of GLP-1-related side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Data show nutrient- and dose-responsive GLP-1 secretion in transduced human beta cells and islets, demonstrating that Rejuva mimics native hormone regulation rather than constant drug-driven stimulation: RJVA-001 activated glucose-dependent expression of GLP-1 in both in vitro and ex vivo models, consistent with physiologic endocrine function. In transduced human beta cells, GLP-1 secretion more than doubled— and GLP-1 bioactivity increased >3-fold — when shifting from low glucose to high glucose conditions. These results demonstrate tight nutrient gating and dose-responsive control of RJVA-001 drug action. Adaptive expression based on disease state : In db/db mice, RJVA-001 drove higher GLP-1 expression in diabetic animals than in healthy controls at the same dose, demonstrating the platform's ability to adapt to metabolic need. RJVA-001-treated healthy mice maintained normal weight and blood sugar, reinforcing the potential safety of this nutrient-responsive smart GLP-1. At equal dosing, db/db mice had more than twice the circulating GLP-1 levels of healthy mice, with no effect on weight or blood sugar in the healthy group. These results support the physiologic, selective, and adaptive action of RJVA-001 based on the body's metabolic state. Endoscopic ultrasound–guided delivery of RJVA-001 in large animals showed targeted pancreatic expression with no observed toxicity: In Yucatan pigs, device deployment was completed in an average procedure time of <20 minutes using a standard clinical endoscopic ultrasound technique. RJVA-001 localized to the pancreas with minimal systemic distribution and no adverse safety findings, even at doses exceeding projected clinical levels. Biodistribution studies showed vector copy number of 7 vector genomes/nucleus in the targeted splenic lobe of the pancreas (equivalent to the body and tail of the human pancreas) versus <0.2 vector genomes/nucleus in the liver. These results indicate profound de-targeting of the liver with local administration with the Rejuva catheter and ultrasound-guided route of administration. No acute or longer-term serum or histopathological evidence of toxicity was observed post-procedure. Serum lipase, neurofilament-light, troponin I, and ALT all remained below the upper limit of normal or below detection, indicating the absence of pancreatic, neuronal, cardiac, and liver toxicity, respectively. No on-target or off-target organ inflammation or other histopathological findings were observed in the study. \"We believe RJVA-001 represents a transformative advance in metabolic medicine,\" said Dr. Harith Rajagopalan, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fractyl Health. \"These data suggest that a one-time, smart GLP-1 can restore physiologic signaling in the pancreas and achieve durable disease modification in diabetes and obesity - without the high levels of systemic drug exposure that causes side effects with current GLP-1 therapies. RJVA-001 has demonstrated superior potency, durability, and convenience in preclinical models, along with a potentially improved tolerability profile than GLP-1 drugs. We believe the Rejuva platform has the potential to usher in a category-closing modality for T2D and obesity. We look forward to our upcoming CTA submission for RJVA-001 and, pending regulatory authorization, preliminary human data in 2026.\" The full ASGCT presentation is available on the Fractyl Health website in the Presentations & Publications section. • "description": "Car laws vary by state, and even though California is one of the world's motor capitals, Jay Leno thinks its smog laws need to be tweaked a bit.",
      • "content": "California isn't just one of America's car culture hotspots — it's one of the world's epicenters of the motoring industry, and it's been that way since the dawn of the automobile. The Golden State is blessed with some of the best weather and the greatest driving roads anywhere on earth. Unsurprisingly, many of the world's most popular automotive subcultures have sprung from the region's big cities and small towns alike. In California, you can enjoy cars year-round, and rust is a much smaller issue than in other parts of America. It's the perfect place to be a car enthusiast, except for one major factor: The emissions laws, known for being the most stringent anywhere in America. California's smog checks in particular make things extra difficult for enthusiasts, especially the ones who own classic cars . But a newly proposed law is hoping to ease these requirements a bit, and its biggest backer is Jay Leno, a longtime California resident and one of the world's most prolific car enthusiasts. Currently, every car in California newer than model year 1975 is subject to regular smog tests . These checks typically must be done every two years to renew your registration, as well as any time a vehicle that is four or more years old is purchased by a new owner. This can make things difficult for gearheads looking to modify or upgrade their old project vehicle or those just wanting to keep an old vehicle on the road in its factory original condition. It's an especially big issue for cars from the '70s and 1980s, where both the parts and the mechanical expertise to keep them in line with strict state emissions standards are becoming harder to find every day. It's a major financial and time burden not just on the owners of the cars but also the shops that test them, as they need to have the equipment and know-how to run tests on cars now approaching 50 years old. The law that Leno is backing, Senate Bill 712 , or \"Leno's Law,\" aims to address this by providing a rolling smog exemption for vehicles older than 35 years. Supporters of the bill have emphasized that the vast majority of cars 35 years old and older are owned by hobbyists and are primarily driven to car shows and on weekend pleasure drives. They aren't commuter vehicles that see thousands and thousands of miles each year. Jay Leno has jokingly stated that he puts more miles on his old cars looking for a smog station than he does actually driving them. And given how many cars are in his collection, that's probably not much of an exaggeration. Another point that Leno has expressed during his media and public appearances supporting the bill is how different states have such vastly different rules regarding emissions checks for older vehicles. According to Leno, SB 712 would simply help bring California's standards more in line with other states. Speaking to KCRA , California State Senator Shannon Grove, the author of the bill, said the cars that would be covered by \"Leno's Law\" represent just 1% of the vehicles registered in the state, meaning its overall environmental impact would be minimal. Beyond just making things easier for individual enthusiasts, the legislation could also help preserve California's car culture heritage and provide a nice economic boost to the state's large aftermarket and restoration industry. Other legislators have tried to ease smog laws for older cars in California in the past, but they've all fizzled out. However, with Jay Leno's very public support, SB 712 might just have the chance to change the tide. As of now, the bill has passed the Senate Transportation Committee with bipartisan support and will next go to the Senate Appropriations Committee.",

(Nasdaq: GUTS) (the Company), a metabolic therapeutics company focused on pattern-breaking approaches that treat root causes of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), today announced an oral presentation of new preclinical data from its Rejuva smart GLP-1 gene therapy platform at the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ASGCT) 2025 Annual Meeting. The data highlight RJVA-001’s potential to deliver durable, nutrient-responsive GLP-1 secretion from pancreatic beta cells—mimicking natural hormone regulation with low circulating levels of GLP-1, offering a potentially profound mechanistic advantage over pharmacologic GLP-1 drugs. RJVA-001 also showed strong efficacy, targeted delivery, and a favorable safety profile, reinforcing its readiness for first-in-human studies. The data were featured in an oral presentation at ASGCT titled “ Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Delivery of Human Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Pancreatic Gene Therapy: Safety and Feasibility in a Porcine Model. ” “RJVA-001 represents a fundamentally different approach to treating metabolic disease - one that delivers the power of GLP-1 in a more natural manner,” said Professor Randy Seeley, Ph.D., Henry King Ransom Professor of Surgery and Director of Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Michigan School of Medicine. “The ability to drive durable metabolic effects with physiologic hormone levels, from a one-time treatment, would be a scientific breakthrough with huge potential implications for patients. This has the potential to reshape how we think about treating T2D and obesity at scale.” Key Data Presented at ASGCT 2025 : Single-dose RJVA-001 led to durable, dose-dependent metabolic improvements in a well-established diabetic model: In db/db mice, treatment with RJVA-001 led to sustained reductions in blood sugar, improved fasting insulin levels, and improvements in body weight over six weeks— supporting Rejuva’s potential for sustained disease modification on both blood sugar and body weight control. In db/db mice, circulating levels of active GLP-1 were 10-20 pM with RJVA-001, compared to 50-150 pM typically reported with pharmacologic GLP-1 drugs 1 . Adaptive expression based on disease state : In db/db mice, RJVA-001 drove higher GLP-1 expression in diabetic animals than in healthy controls at the same dose, demonstrating the platform’s ability to adapt to metabolic need. These results support the physiologic, selective, and adaptive action of RJVA-001 based on the body’s metabolic state. “We believe RJVA-001 represents a transformative advance in metabolic medicine,” said Dr. Harith Rajagopalan, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fractyl Health. “These data suggest that a one-time, smart GLP-1 can restore physiologic signaling in the pancreas and achieve durable disease modification in diabetes and obesity - without the high levels of systemic drug exposure that causes side effects with current GLP-1 therapies. RJVA-001 has demonstrated superior potency, durability, and convenience in preclinical models, along with a potentially improved tolerability profile than GLP-1 drugs. We believe the Rejuva platform has the potential to usher in a category-closing modality for T2D and obesity. We look forward to our upcoming CTA submission for RJVA-001 and, pending regulatory authorization, preliminary human data in 2026.” The full ASGCT presentation is available on the Fractyl Health website in the Presentations & Publications section. • "content": "A Christian Petzold summer has a particular climate: drily hot enough to parch the grass in the flat German countryside, but with a looming threat of harder, heavier weather, plus a baseline chill inside his characters that ensures they never quite thaw under the beating sun. This signature season has backgrounded Petzold joints from “Jerichow” to “Barbara” to 2023’s excellent “Afire,” and it descends once more, again to simultaneously warming and cooling effect, in “ Miroirs No. 3 .” A humid little psychological drama of displacement, replacement and fresh plum cake, in which balmy days mix with unhealed trauma to briefly make precarious new lives and identities possible, this 86-minute puzzle piece isn’t one of the director’s major works, but is distinguished by his trademark pleasures of texture and tone — and pushes his ongoing collaboration with star Paula Beer into ever more enigmatic territory. Far from the bristling emotional potency of Petzold’s previous muse Nina Hoss, Beer can be an aloof, hard-to-read presence. Though she was disarmingly, even tauntingly, relaxed in “Afire,” “Miroirs No. 3” — titled for the Ravel piano piece played at a critical juncture — hands her an especially remote, shape-shifting character, plagued by silent demons even before the tragedy that sets the story in motion. The film’s blank spaces and ambiguities linger even after a melodramatic pivot that’s easily seen coming, and will entice and confound viewers in equal measure. Premiering as one of the star attractions in this year’s Directors’ Fortnight lineup at Cannes, it has already attracted extensive distributor interest, with Metrograph Pictures acquiring North American rights. Beer plays Laura, a young piano student in Berlin suffering an unspecified mental crisis at the outset of proceedings. She seemingly cannot articulate what ails her to anyone, least of all her handsome, impatient musician boyfriend Jakob, who needs her to be on model-girlfriend duty for a sailing weekend with a potential producer. After leaving the city, she has a sudden change of heart, prompting an enraged Jakob to speed her back to the station in his open-topped sports car — cue a horrific accident that kills him and leaves her alive but even more catatonically distressed than before. We see the moment before the crash — where Laura briefly but quizzically locks eyes with a middle-aged woman living beside the country road — and the bloody aftermath second later, but not how or why it occurs. It’s a teasing evasion typical of how “Miroirs No. 3” operates: Immediate revelations and moments of impact are of less interest to Petzold than their gnawing long-term effects. The nearest thing to an outside witness is Betty (Barbara Auer), the sad-eyed woman whose gaze Laura met just before, and who rescues her from the wreckage with reassuring calm, taking her back to her unassuming but inviting farmhouse. It’s homely enough that Laura, shaken by the accident but unfazed by the loss of Jakob, asks to stay indefinitely; Betty is surprised but happy to let her. There are mournful, darkly specific human reasons underpinning this seemingly irrational behavior on the part of both women, and we get closer to them once it emerges that Betty isn’t entirely alone in this still, pale-skied stretch of rural Germany. Her gruff husband Richard (Matthias Brandt) and hulking adult son Max (Enno Trebs) live nearby on the car-repair workshop they manage together: Add this domestic split to the list of unresolved question marks that eventually add up to a larger, more sorrowful story. They’re perplexed by the new arrival in their midst, but in time Laura and the lonely, unforthcoming Max warm to each other, and the four form an odd, intuitive family unit. One senses what’s afoot even before Betty begins sporadically calling Laura by another name, while local passersby give them strange, clucking looks, but the full reveal, when it comes, isn’t intended as a seismic twist. Rather, there’s a mutually healing trajectory to this strange, secretive summer of playing house, and Petzold observes its gradual onset in fine details of gesture, expression and domestic routine — and its lapses when people fall intermittently out of character. This is short-story cinema, less preoccupied with complete conclusions than with fraught moments of clarity and arrival — as when a certain Chopin piece, played by Laura after being too forcefully requested by Betty, bridges the memories of one character with the resumed future of another. The four actors play off each other’s contrasting energies as they assert their roles in this improvised new household: Beer’s airy reticence is of a slightly different pitch to Trebs’ itchy brooding, different again from Auer’s contained but increasingly off-kilter semblance of matriarchal control. It’s all assembled with Petzold’s customary elegance and reserve — his restraint making occasional instances of absurdity and chaos, be it an overturned red convertible or an exploding dishwasher, all the more disorienting, like loud mechanical expressions of quiet human disorder. Painting in bleached neutrals and sunburnt primary colors, the director’s regular DP Hans Fromm maintains an air of wilted stillness suffused with a rash of anxiety, with camera movements that turn from serene to predatory as the mood of a scene tilts. Rich sound design, meanwhile, sometimes cuts through the summery hum and buzz of the outdoors (or a speaker blaring Frankie Valli’s “The Night”) with silent breaks in which characters can finally hear themselves think, for better or worse.",

      • "content": "Arsenal manager Kai Havertz has confirmed forward Kai Havertz could return from his hamstring injury in Sunday‘s meeting with Newcastle United. Havertz was initially expected to miss the remainder of the season after being struck down in January, but Arteta has offered increasingly optimistic updates on the German‘s condition in recent weeks and was particularly full of praise in the build-up to Sunday‘s game. “Unbelievable,” Arteta said. “I think his work rate, the work that he’s done as well, a lot of credit to the medical staff for the work that they’ve done throughout the last few months, because between then they’ve been pushing each other. “We know how important Kai is for us. And the fact that he looks in great shape, I think he’s improved a lot of the metrics that are very important for a striker to give himself the best chance. And you see the transformation in him, which has been really impressive.” Now back in training, Havertz will face a late fitness test as Arteta contemplates reinstating the German for Sunday‘s crucial meeting with Newcastle . Both sides are battling to qualify for the Champions League, but neither have secured their spot at this point. “We’re going to decide [on a possible return for Havertz] tomorrow,” Arteta revealed. “So he’s done certain parts of the sessions in the last two days. He looks in great shape, but I think it’s more a shout of, first of all, the medical staff, the doctor especially, giving the clearance, and then how Kai actually feels to contribute if he’s required.” Arteta went on to admit Havertz had shattered a number of Arsenal ‘s physical records in his recovery, praising the 25-year-old for working tirelessly to return ahead of schedule. “Power, acceleration, muscle mass, the way that he has increased certain capacities in his body, his agility, he’s been incredible,” Arteta concluded. “For someone that is not in the team to have that mindset, the only thing he has done is raise the standards in the building because the other ones in the building who are injured were looking at him, ‘I’m going to look bad if I don’t do the same’ so that’s part of the culture.”",

“Llegar a Barranquilla siempre me hace feliz!

Epic called this blocking \"blatant retaliation.\"",
      • "content": "The protracted legal and strategic conflict between Apple and Epic Games over the future of Fortnite on the iOS App Store entered yet another high-stakes chapter this week, dramatizing tensions at the intersection of platform power, regulatory scrutiny, and developer rights. Epic Games, the publisher behind the blockbuster battle royale Fortnite, escalated its campaign for re-entry to the U.S. App Store after Apple refused to act on Epic’s resubmission of the game. According to a statement provided to 9to5Mac, Apple confirmed it will not move forward with Fortnite’s app submission until the Ninth Circuit Court rules on the company’s pending appeal. “In the meantime, Apple has determined not to take action on the Fortnite app submission until after the Ninth Circuit rules on our pending appeal,” Apple said, offering a rare glimpse into its procedural rationale. This development follows years of litigation and regulatory wrangling, originating from Epic’s decision in 2020 to bypass Apple’s in-app purchase system. The move led Apple to remove Fortnite from the App Store, triggering a legal battle over alleged monopolistic practices and App Store fees. While Epic won partial vindication in U.S. courts and further momentum from Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple’s U.S. position remains resolute, refraining from relisting Fortnite and maintaining strict control over iOS app distribution and payments, as chronicled by The Register and 9to5Mac. Epic’s counteroffensive has shifted to the courts. As reported by MacObserver and 9to5Mac, Epic formally asked a federal judge to compel Apple to reinstate Fortnite, arguing that Apple’s refusal is “blatant retaliation” that undermines court rulings and the spirit of fair competition. In a thread on X (formerly Twitter), Epic’s public affairs detailed Apple’s delay as a strategic maneuver to stymie competition until its legal challenges run their course. Epic maintains that Apple’s refusal to allow Fortnite’s return runs afoul of both the law and evolving regulatory standards. Apple, for its part, disputes Epic’s characterization. In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple flatly denied blocking Fortnite’s return on EU App Stores, describing reports to the contrary as inaccurate. Apple’s spokesperson insisted it is complying with all relevant laws and court orders, even as it seeks clarification from judicial authorities and regulators on the implications for its review processes. This war of attrition is not isolated to the United States. As noted by Marca and Bloomberg, Apple’s posture regarding Fortnite and Epic’s developer accounts has drawn significant attention in the European Union, where the DMA explicitly targets large platform gatekeepers. The EU’s regulatory pressure played a critical role in enabling Epic’s developer account reinstatement and the relaunch of Epic’s own app store on iOS devices in the bloc earlier this year, but Apple’s global compliance remains under close scrutiny. Industry insiders interviewed by MobileGamer.biz and 9to5Mac underline the wider implications of the standoff. For developers reliant on Apple’s ecosystem, the Fortnite impasse is a bellwether for how much leverage they can realistically expect to exert, even when armed with favorable court decisions or regulatory mandates. For Apple, the dispute encapsulates the risks of ceding gatekeeper privileges, both to rival app stores and to in-app payment providers that threaten its lucrative App Store margin. As the industry awaits the Ninth Circuit’s ruling, both sides dig in for a long legal siege. The outcome will not only determine the fate of Fortnite on Apple devices but will also set precedents vital to the economics of app distribution, platform accountability, and the regulatory boundaries of Big Tech. Apple and Epic’s ongoing collision course is viewed by legal and business analysts as a turning point with consequences extending well beyond the parties themselves.",

Its Auditable AI Agents automate complex tasks, bridging the talent gap, reducing manual workloads, and empowering professionals to focus on strategic activities, with global expansion and future IPO plans underway.",
      • "content": "In a significant move for the accounting technology sector, FloQast, the accounting transformation platform founded by former accountants, recently expanded its AI capabilities, introducing a solution powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3 on Amazon Bedrock. This development represents the latest evolution for a company that has spent a decade growing from a focused month-end close solution to a comprehensive platform addressing the broader needs of the accounting profession. From Accounting Pain Points to AI TransformationFloQast’s journey began with co-founder and CEO Mike Whitmire’s firsthand experience with accounting inefficiencies during an IPO process. “I experienced those pains firsthand and then ultimately was like ‘Hey there’s got to be a better way to do this,'” Whitmire explained during a recent appearance on NYSE TV Live. This practical understanding of accountants’ challenges has guided the company’s development over its ten-year history. What started as a solution for the month-end close process has expanded significantly, driven by customer adoption patterns. “Our customers started using us more broadly, and so we leaned into that and have built a full-on platform for accountants,” Whitmire noted. The company now positions itself as an “accounting transformation platform,” with artificial intelligence serving as its next frontier. In March 2025, FloQast launched its Auditable AI Agents, a groundbreaking capability that enables accountants to automate complex, recurring workflows. The technology was recognized in the 2025 FinTech Breakthrough Awards, where FloQast earned the title of “Best Finance Automation Platform.”Addressing Real-World Accounting ComplexitiesThe accounting profession involves far more complexity than outsiders typically recognize. Whitmire illustrated this with a client example: “I was meeting with an accountant and we were talking about using an agent for one of their reconciliation processes. What they do is they have 37 different systems they’re pulling information from. It needs to be gathered in one place, needs to be massaged, manipulated, and then create a journal entry and then post a journal entry.”This single process, which might consume 40 hours of staff time, can be reduced to just five minutes using FloQast’s AI agents. The platform transforms the accountant’s role from manual processor to strategic reviewer, addressing a critical talent gap in the industry. At the heart of this advancement is FloQast Transform, a centralized hub where customers can create, test, deploy, and manage AI Agents. While FloQast continues developing agents for all customers, the platform also enables accounting teams to create bespoke automation for their specific needs.Balancing Automation with Professional ValueThe push for automation in accounting comes with understandable concerns about job displacement. However, FloQast sees its technology addressing a different problem: the significant talent shortage in accounting and the overwhelming workloads facing existing professionals.“There’s a big talent gap in accounting right now, and so we need automation to plug the talent gap and just for starters have accountants go home at a reasonable hour,” Whitmire emphasized. “We’re all very overworked right now.”This perspective has resonated with accounting leaders like Edwine Alphonse, Senior Controller at Ramp, who stated, “Today’s accountants have an opportunity to focus on higher-level, strategic work, driving more value and increasing their presence within their organizations. Accountants who embrace AI will be more effective and impactful, while those who don’t risk being left behind.”Measurable Benefits and Future AmbitionsFloQast claims its core platform, even before AI enhancements, enables companies to close their books approximately 30% faster while improving audit efficiency. The addition of AI capabilities can potentially automate “hundreds or thousands of hours within any given accounting department,” according to Whitmire.Looking ahead, the company has ambitious growth plans that include international expansion beyond its current U.S. offices in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. FloQast is growing its presence in London and Australia, with Whitmire expressing a long-held aspiration to take the company public.“I do want to go public. This has been a goal since I was like in high school,” he shared during his NYSE visit. “I’ve for some reason always wanted to start a company that goes public... I can only hope to do it at FloQast one day.”The company’s expansion builds upon its Accounting Transformation Platform launched in September 2024, which encompasses four key solutions: Close Optimization, Close Automation, Connected Compliance, and Integrated Record-to-Report. With its AI-powered accounting transformation solution built with Anthropic’s Claude 3 on Amazon Bedrock, FloQast appears positioned to continue its evolution as a key player in accounting technology innovation.",

      • "content": "The Detroit Lions' voluntary workouts are underway and there is one player who is noticeably absent: linebacker Alex Anzalone. Anzalone is not taking part in the voluntary workouts thus far, and the thought has been that it could be contract-related. On the flip side, it's also important to remember that players are, of course, not required to attend. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard said he isn't concerned about Anzalone's absence, though. “Me and Alex are all good,” Sheppard said of Anzalone this week, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “I have zero concern. \"That player is a leader here and he’s been a leader here, he’s been an intricate piece in building the culture that’s here and I’m going to pay the respect that he’s earned and that he’s due, and whatever his private situations are, I’ll let Alex address those when he’s face-to-face with you all,” Sheppard added Is Alex Anzalone holding out? Anzalone's absence from voluntary workouts are not unusual, as he has chosen to stay at home instead in the past, where he's certainly hard at work preparing for 2025. However, this year is a bit different. Anzalone has suggested on social media that he wants a new deal , and has done so on multiple occasions. Anzalone is entering the final year of his three-year, $18.3 million contract, a deal he has outplayed considerably. Anzalone has become one of the better linebackers in the NFL and is a crucial piece to the Lions' defense, something we saw very clearly during his absence due to a fractured forearm last season . As Anzalone's deal enters its final year, he just saw the Lions hand out a three-year, $24 million deal to Derrick Barnes, who is far less proven and is coming off a year in which he played in just three games due to a knee injury. Anzalone no doubt deserves a pay raise, but his situation is a bit different. He's set to turn 31 years old this year and there will be concerns about a decline in the upcoming years, which could lead the Lions to balk at a new contract. However, the Lions have shown a propensity to take care of their best players, and we believe they'll ultimately get something done with the veteran linebacker. • "content": "May 17, 2025 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked reputable news agency proofread by Ruth EGLASH With its golden sand and blue waters, the beachfront in central Israel looks much like any other stretch of Mediterranean coast, but a closer look reveals something unusual peeking through the rippling surf: black shark fins. The sharks are attracted to this patch of water in Hadera during the cold season because of the warmth generated by the turbines of a nearby power station. This has provoked an adrenaline-filled coexistence between the increasingly bold ocean predators and the curious, sometimes even careless, humans who come to swim. Last month, a man who got a little too close was mauled to death as spectators on the beach screamed in terror. All that was left were his bones, rescuers told AFP. Now, bathers, authorities, and environmental and shark experts are asking how such an event, never seen before in Israeli waters, happened and what can be done to prevent it in the future. \"Sharks do not harm and never normally attack unless they feel either threatened or if somebody's getting into their territory,\" Irene Nurit Cohn, a member of rescue agency Zaka's scuba unit and a seasoned diver, told AFP. \"I've been diving since 1982. I've seen many sharks in my life, it has been thrilling and beautiful to watch sharks... but they're not, and I repeat, they're not dangerous,\" she said. Cohn, who was part of the team that searched for the remains of Barak Tzach, a 45-year-old father of four, added that it was the people visiting the unique site who were \"not behaving as they should.\" \"People were touching them and disturbing them,\" she said, adding that recent media coverage had drawn even more people to the beach. 'It's dangerous' Immediately after the deadly attack, the local authority erected metal fences with \"danger\" signs and blocked an access road into the adjacent nature reserve with a cement barrier. Two weeks later, those had been removed, and life at the beach was back to normal. Friends Einav and Carmel, teenagers from a nearby town, appeared largely undeterred by the recent death. They had come specifically to see the sharks. \"Sharks are my favorite animals and so I really wanted to see them, but we said that we will not go inside (the water) because it's dangerous,\" said Carmel. Matan Ben David, a spear-fishing and diving instructor who said he has continued to enter the water, said swimmers should keep a distance and adhere to the rules of the sea. \"Sharks are part of nature, something we have to respect, we have to respect the ocean, we're just visitors here,\" he said, describing how he had witnessed people crowding the sharks and taking photographs. \"Sharks are an incredible animal, very majestic but they're an alpha predator and, at the end of the day, a lot of people do not always follow best practices ,\" Ben David noted. Like all unsupervised beaches in Israel, the one where the fatal attack took place was off-limits to swimming—a ban that is widely flouted. Human-wildlife conflict Leigh Livine, a shark researcher who has been monitoring this area for the past four years, said that initially, research showed \"the sharks were staying away from direct conflict with the humans entering the water.\" But \"you have a very, very small space that you see this human-wildlife conflict really coming out at certain times of the year.\" Livine said the sharks were a combination of Dusky and Sandbar sharks and that they were present in the area between November and May. But with temperatures rising each year due to climate change , \"you have a lot more bodies in the water coming into conflict with the sharks.\" Livine said she was shocked by last month's attack but, with interaction between the sharks and humans increasing, was surprised \"that something hasn't happened sooner.\" \"It usually comes down to a conflict of space, either food resources , space resources, and we've been seeing humans harass the sharks , really provoking them,\" she said. © 2025 AFP",

      • "description": "The Dreo Smart Wall Heater did a great job keeping my family warm all winter and spring. It's efficient, affordable, and now it's even cheaper.",
      • "content": "The Dreo Smart Wall Heater is now on sale for $117 on Amazon. This little 1,500W heater pumps out warmth and has just the right amount of features to set it above the competition. The vertical oscillation fin can be paused, but only in three positions - pointing upward, straight out, or downward (there's no way to stop it between those marks). Access to a reliable space heater can mean the difference between being cold and comfortable in your home, basement, or garage -- and this little heater packs the necessary punch. Also: Don't plug these 7 appliances (including space heaters) into extension cords - here's why In my home, we have two furnaces that do a remarkable job of keeping me and my wife nice and toasty. However, the basement -- where I work out -- doesn't enjoy the same warmth as the rest of the house. I've always hesitated to use a space heater in the basement because the room isn't finished, it can get quite messy, and there's not always room on the floor for a space heater among all the exercise equipment. So, when Dreo provided its wall-mounted space heater to review, I was happy to give it a try. Dreo Smart Wall Heater This tiny heater will keep you nice and toasty throughout the winter, while remaining out of the way and user-friendly. My experience First, I did not bother with the Dreo space heater's smart aspect. The reason is that we've decommissioned our Alexa devices in favor of Google Home speakers. We recently switched network providers, and I couldn't get Alexa to connect to the new network, no matter how much I tried. I'd always found Alexa devices to be problematic when it comes to connectivity, and the Google Home speakers were absolutely painless to deploy. Also: I put this robot vacuum and mop combo through my gauntlet of dirtiness, and it delivered That being said, after using the heater for a few weeks, I found I did not miss the smart features because the heater does a spectacular job without the addition of Alexa or the mobile app. Our basement gets cold in winter. Normally, when I'm working out, I have to dress as if I'm exercising outside. Thanks to the Dreo, that is not the case. I cranked the heater to its highest setting and enjoyed the warmth. Now, I've tried to do the same thing with other space heaters, of which I have two -- a radiator and a traditional heater. Neither of my other heaters could pull their weight in the basement. The Dreo, however, had me feeling nice and cozy as I sweated it out. That feature alone sold me on the heater. The addition of the well-designed remote was also a plus. When things got too warm, I could lower the heat or turn off the device without missing a beat on either the rower or treadmill. Also: The best space heaters of 2025 One thing you should know is that our basement is 900 square feet, so a space heater isn't going to warm the entire area. However, I placed the heater to focus on my exercise equipment, and that part of the basement was considerably warmer than the other side of the room. If you were to use the Dreo in a bedroom, living room, TV room, or any other location that isn't a giant unfinished space, I'm confident this heater would have you feeling perfectly comfy all winter long. A nit to pick The only issue I had with the Dreo heater was that the oscillating fin can only be paused in three specific locations. When you stop the oscillations, the fin either rests at the top-most, center-most, or bottom-most location. That's fine if you don't need to have it pumping out heat to a specific plane on its vertical trajectory. But if you want to get specific, you're out of luck. ZDNET's buying advice Besides that small issue, I found the Dreo Smart Wall Heater to be the best space heater I've ever used. And at its sale price of $117, it's worth every penny if you hate being cold. If you need to warm up a room and are tired of traditional space heaters that tend to be in the way and fail to perform, this little heater is an absolute winner. Not only will it keep you warm, but the heater gives you complete control over how it functions. The specs 120-degree vertical oscillation to evenly distribute heat 89% air-heating volume Smart control, which allows you to schedule heating hours, access heater settings, and even use voice control through Alexa PTC ceramics brings instant and steady heat Automatic LED panel light adjustment so the heater doesn't interrupt your sleep Simple installation using the included template Remote control from anywhere in the room Detachable filter Convenient cable recess Sound level -- 41dB ELT-listed 120 volts 3 speeds Dimensions -- 4.52\" D x 20.15\" W x 13.18\" H Weight -- 9.15 pounds I tested Sony's WH-1000XM6 headphones, and I'm seriously considering ditching my Bose I switched to Motorola's $1,300 Razr Ultra for a week - and it's ruined regular phones for me This LG OLED TV isn't its most premium model, but the visuals impressed me just as much Why I can't recommend the M4 MacBook Air enough - especially at this discounted price",

      • "description": "The Cannes Film Festival has always featured red carpets with daring fashion. Thanks to a new dress code, that's changing this year.",
      • "content": "Bella Hadid at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.Brynn Anderson/APThe 2025 Cannes Film Festival will run between May 13 and May 24.This year, guests have received an updated dress code that bans nudity and dresses with long trains.Iconic gowns worn by Bella Hadid and other stars in the past have been sheer and dramatically long.I never thought I'd say this, but we need more \"naked\" dresses on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. You know the style I'm talking about. They're form-fitted, made with mesh, and heavily beaded in just the right areas. My colleagues and I have been complaining for years that they've overtaken red carpets (at the French festival and elsewhere), but I take it all back now that they've been banned from Cannes.A new dress code for this year's event, which runs until May 24, prohibits nudity \"for decency reasons.\" The film festival has also put a stop to excessively voluminous dress trains that make it difficult for others to walk the red carpet or sit inside theaters.Clearly, we didn't appreciate what we had when we had it.So, as we mourn the loss of these dramatic fashion staples, here's a look at some daring outfits from past Cannes Film Festivals that probably wouldn't be allowed on the red carpet in 2025.Eva Longoria's gray gown at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival showed a lot of skin.Eva Longoria at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.Lionel Cironneau/APThough the Gabriela Cadena piece appeared conservative from the front with its solid gray fabric, it was actually entirely sheer down its sides.Only clusters of silver sparkles and see-through mesh sat atop her legs, hips, and torso. Though it worked then, the partial nudity might not fly at this year's event.Kendall Jenner put an edgy twist on sheer fashion in 2016.Kendall Jenner at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.Joel Ryan/APRoberto Cavalli designed Jenner's sheer black gown, which might not make it past security at Cannes today. The long-sleeved piece, crafted from mesh, showed most of her body. She wore only high-waisted underwear beneath it.A snake print and light glitter made the dress even more dramatic.Everyone remembers the model's 2018 appearance in a white Schiaparelli number.Kendall Jenner at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.Venturelli/WireImageThat year, she ditched a bra when she wore her tulle gown, which showed her chest with sheer straps that acted as a top.Its long, tiered skirt was also see-through and voluminous, though not enough to get in the way of other people walking the red carpet.Deepika Padukone covered the Cannes stairs with a massive train in 2019.Deepika Padukone at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.Arthur Mola/Invision/APEvery inch of the actor's Peter Dundas gown was dramatic that year.It had giant puffed sleeves, a bow that extended past her torso, and a skirt train that was so long it covered numerous steps behind her.The gown was the definition of voluminous, especially because she needed at least two people to help her get up the stairs.Ngoc Trinh, on the other hand, essentially wore a leotard that year.Ngoc Trinh at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.Daniele Venturelli/Andreas Rentz/Getty ImagesThe model walked the Cannes red carpet in a black number from Đỗ Long. It was made from mesh and therefore entirely sheer. It was also cut in a daring style. The outfit featured a backless halter top, a keyhole cutout at the chest, a thong bottom, and two thin strips of fabric in place of a skirt.Bella Hadid made a bold accessory choice in 2021 that might break some current rules.Bella Hadid at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.Lionel Hahn/Getty ImagesHadid wore a plain black gown at Cannes in 2021.However, her long-sleeved Schiaparelli dress was daring with a scooped neckline that plunged to her waist. The model also wore a golden necklace shaped like lungs to cover her chest. Though not technically nude, wearing the same pieces at the 2025 event would be risky.Farhana Bodi brought a ton of ruffles to Cannes that year.Farhana Bodi at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.Vianney Le Caer/Invision/APThe TV star was a vibrant pop of color on the red carpet thanks to her strapless yellow dress. It was crafted from tulle in tiers of ruffles that extended into a long, thick train.Because the skirt pieces have since been banned, there's a chance that Bodi wouldn't be able to wear the same dress to this year's event.Leila Depina sported crystal chainmail in 2023.Leila Depina at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.Stefanie Rex/Getty ImagesThe model wore a simple thong beneath a sleeveless look crafted from strings of crystals, which showed her body.To complete the look, Depina sported see-through sandals and delicate jewelry.Didi Stone was one of last year's best-dressed stars, but one of her gowns might not slide in 2025.Didi Stone at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.Christophe Simon/Getty ImagesFor one red carpet, the French model wore a black Stéphane Rolland gown. It was made with thick black fabric that draped around her head and hips in a circle and down her legs as a skirt. What made the ensemble even more daring, though, were the layered rope necklaces she wore as a top. It was bold enough to possibly break this year's dress code.Hadid skipped a bra for one of her Cannes appearances last year.Bella Hadid at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty ImagesSaint Laurent created the brown halter dress she wore last year, which was almost entirely sheer. Only her waist and hips were wrapped with extra fabric to create a more opaque look.It might not have been Hadid's most dramatic look at the film festival, but it was one of her most see-through.Mean Sonyta wore one of the longest trains in Cannes history last year.Mean Sonyta at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.Scott A Garfitt/Invision/APThe actor and model wrote on Instagram at the time that she wanted her Cannes outfit to honor Cambodian fashion. So she tapped designer brand De l'Elegance to create her strapless gown, matching hat, and extensive green train. It was so long, however, that similar trains might not be allowed at future Cannes festivals. Read the original article on Business Insider",
