      • "content": "Koyo Kouoh, one of the art world's leading figures and a fierce advocate of African creatives, has died aged 57. A Cameroon-born curator, Kouoh had been at the height of her career. She was due to become the first African woman to lead next year's Venice Biennale, one of the world's most prestigious contemporary art events, and led one of Africa's largest contemporary art museums. The cause of Kouoh's unexpected death has not yet been made public. The curator passed away in Switzerland, according to reports. South African artist Candice Breitz described Kouoh as \"magnificently intelligent, endlessly energetic and formidably elegant\". Otobong Nkanga, a Nigerian visual artist, called the late curator a source of warmth, generosity and brilliance\". Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni also spoke of Kouoh's impact, saying her passing \"leaves a void in the world of contemporary art\". Kouoh's colourful life began in 1967, when she was born in Cameroon, a Central African country with a rich artistic heritage. She grew up in the country's largest city, Douala, before moving to Switzerland aged 13. There, she studied business administration and banking but, in a pivotal moment, chose not to pursue finance as a career. \"I am fundamentally uninterested in profit,\" she explained in a 2023 interview with the New York Times. Rather than building on her degree, Kouoh assisted migrant women as a social worker and began to immerse herself in the world of art. She gave birth to her son in Switzerland during the 90s, an experience she described as \"profoundly transformative\" . She would go on to adopt three other children. Fed up with life in the Swiss city of Zurich, Kouoh returned to Africa in 1996. She worked as a curator in Senegalese capital city Dakar, before founding Raw Material Company, an expansive, independent art hub. Just last week, and six years into her role as the director of South Africa's Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Kouoh reflected on her love for Dakar. \"Dakar made me who I am today,\" she told the Financial Times . \"It's the place I came of age professionally, where I really became a curator and an exhibition-maker... I'm in Cape Town now but, mentally, I live in Dakar. It's the one and only place for me.\" When Kouoh took the top job at Zeitz, Africa's biggest contemporary art museum, the institution was in crisis. Founding director Mark Coetzee had been suspended in 2018 following allegations of staff harrasment and later resigned. Kouoh has been widely credited with turning Zeitz's fortunes around, leading it through the scandal, as well as the Covid pandemic. \"For me, it became a duty to salvage this institution,\" she told The Art World: What If...?! podcast. \"I was convinced that the failure of Zeitz, if it had failed would've been the failure of all of us African art professionals in the field, somehow indirectly.\" As Zeitz's director and curator, Kouoh oversaw a number of acclaimed exhibitions, including When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting. The show, which brings together works by black artists from the last century, is currently on display in Brussels. In a statement announcing Kouoh's \"sudden\" death, Zeitz expressed its \"profound sorrow\" and said that, out of respect, the museum would be closed \"until further notice\". In her Financial Times interview last week, Kouoh challenged the idea that death would bring an end to her endeavours. \"I do believe in life after death, because I come from an ancestral black education where we believe in parallel lives and realities,\" she said. \"There is no 'after death', 'before death' or 'during life'. It doesn't matter that much. I believe in energies - living or dead - and in cosmic strength.\" Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "Pope Leo XIV meets with cardinals (@Vatican Media)In his first address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV invokes the legacy of both Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIII, saying that he wants the Church to “respond to a new industrial revolution and to the development of artificial intelligence.”Vatican, Italy | VATICAN NEWS | In his first formal address to the College of Cardinals following his election, Pope Leo XIV has revealed the inspiration behind the name he chose – one which, in his own words, echoes the Church’s enduring commitment to human dignity and social justice.“Pope Leo XIII, with the historic Encyclical Rerum novarum, addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution,” Pope Leo recalled. “Today, the Church offers to all her treasure of social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and the developments of artificial intelligence.” A name, then, not only rooted in tradition, but one that looks firmly ahead to the challenges of a rapidly changing world and the perennial call to protect those most vulnerable within it.Addressing the Cardinals, whom he called the “closest collaborators of the Pope,” on Saturday, Pope Leo XIV delivered his first official address as the Successor of Peter, expressing heartfelt gratitude and an awareness of the immense responsibility now entrusted to him. “This yoke,” he said, “is clearly far beyond my strength – as it would be for anyone.”Pope Leo noted that the days that preceded his election had been marked by mourning, as the Church bid farewell to Pope Francis. Recognising the emotional weight of that farewell, the Pope described the death of the beloved Pope Francis and the subsequent Conclave as “a paschal event,” one enveloped in the light of the Resurrection. The new Bishop of Rome paid tribute to his predecessor, remembering Pope Francis’ simplicity, his radical dedication to service, and his peaceful return to the Father’s House. “Let us treasure this precious legacy and resume our journey,” he said, “animated by the same hope that comes from faith.”The Holy Father reminded those gathered of the quiet yet powerful presence of the Risen Christ – “not in the roar of thunder and earthquake,” but in “the whisper of a gentle breeze.” It is in this stillness, he said, that we encounter God most intimately, and it is this encounter that must guide the Church in her mission today.Pope Leo then went on to speak of the Church as both “womb” and “flock,” as “field” and “temple,” and he praised the unity shown by the faithful in the days of mourning, describing it as having “revealed the true greatness of the Church.”Looking ahead to the future, Pope Leo XIV reiterated the path set in motion by the Second Vatican Council, a path renewed and reinterpreted under Pope Francis. He highlighted key themes from Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium: the primacy of Christ, synodality, the sensus fidei (the supernatural “sense” of the faithful), popular piety, care for the poor, and courageous engagement with the world.“These are Gospel principles through which the merciful face of the Father has been revealed and continues to be revealed in the Son made man,” said Pope Leo.Bringing his discourse to a close, Pope Leo XIV called his brother Cardinals and the wider Church to continue along this path with “prayer and commitment.” Finally, he quoted Saint Paul VI, at the dawn of his own pontificate, praying that “a great flame of faith and love” may once again spread across the world, lighting the way for all people of good will.*****SOURCE: Vatican NewsShare on: WhatsAppThe post Pope Leo XIV: Church must respond to digital revolution appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "The report calls copper the “new strategic raw material” “in the new green and digital economyKampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A looming copper shortfall could stall the world’s shift to clean energy and digital infrastructure, warns UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its latest Global Trade Update this week. The global copper industry is entering a pivotal phase – one not only requiring more production, but also smarter, more inclusive and technologically driven growth strategies.A rise in copper demand could be good news for Uganda which has embarked on revamping copper production in Kasese. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa on Thursday handed over Kilembe Mines to Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC) and Sarrai Group!“This marks a new chapter in Uganda’s mining sector,” she said.Kilembe Mines is Uganda’s largest copper mine, located in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains with estimated deposits of over 4 million tons of copper ore and an undetermined amount of cobalt ore, with approximately 2,800 acres of unexplored acreage.Global copper demand is expected to grow by over 40% by 2040, but supply isn’t keeping pace. Meeting this demand may require 80 new mines and $250 billion in investment by 2030.China dominates the processing of many critical mineralsDeveloping countries risk missing out on value-added opportunities if they remain limited to raw material exports, Smarter trade policies, investment, and recycling are needed to close the gap.The report calls copper the “new strategic raw material” “in the new green and digital economy” and a test case for how global trade systems handle resource pressures under strain. Copper is essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, artificial-intelligence infrastructure, data centres and smart grids.Yet supply isn’t keeping up. Global demand is set to rise over 40% by 2040, but low ore grades, geopolitical risks and long development timelines – up to 25 years for new mines – pose structural challenges. Meeting projected needs would require 80 new mines and $250 billion in investment by 2030.Resource-rich nations export raw copper, miss value-added gainsMore than half of global copper reserves lie in just five countries, namely Australia, Chile, Peru, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Russian Federation. But most of the value is added elsewhere. China now imports 60% of global copper ore and produces over 45% of refined copper.UNCTAD finds that many resource-rich countries are stuck at the bottom of the value chain, exporting raw materials but unable to industrialize. Tariff escalation – from under 2% duties on refined copper to up to 8% on other finished products like sheets and wires – can discourage upgrading. Most major copper exporters also fall below the global average in economic complexity, underscoring the need for investment in infrastructure, skills and targeted trade policy.“Copper is no longer just a commodity – it’s a strategic asset,” said Luz María de la Mora, Director of UNCTAD’s Division on International Trade and Commodities.“Its market exposes the power asymmetries that still shape global trade. That’s why we need to invest in local value addition, scale up recycling and remove trade barriers that limit opportunity. This is a moment where all countries can win – if trade is made to work for development.”Professor Daniel Franks, Director of the Global Centre for Mineral Security at the University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute says Copper is probably the most important metal of the energy transition, and that’s because it carries electrons and therefore is important in all of the technologies.“And we have a very large copper industry because we use copper for electricity and communication.” he said. Recycling now supplies 1 in 5 tonnes of copperIn 2023, 4.5 million tons – nearly 20% of global refined copper – came from secondary sources. The United States, Germany and Japan are top scrap exporters, while China, Canada and the Republic of Korea lead on imports. For developing countries, copper recycling is a strategic opportunity. Building local capacity can reduce import dependence, lower emissions and support circular-economy practices to protect the environment and use resources more efficiently.Copper is a test case for future trade strategyThe report argues that copper is a test case for managing critical materials amid global trade tensions, fragmented supply chains and shifting industrial policies. These risks reflect the broader slowdown and uncertainty UNCTAD has cautioned against. UNCTAD urges smarter trade and industrial strategies – streamlined permitting, reduced tariffs, regional value chains – to help developing countries move up the value chain and share more equitably in the energy and tech transformations.****URNShare on: WhatsAppThe post Focus turns to Kilembe as report warns of looming global copper crunch appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

(Photo by Rizek Abdeljawad/Xinhua)GAZA | Xinhua | A joint U.S.-Israeli initiative to distribute humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip has triggered strong backlash from Gazans, who say the plan undermines their dignity and sidelines established international relief channels.Palestinians displaced by months of conflict voiced deep mistrust of the effort, accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of politicizing aid delivery amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.“Since we were forced to flee south at the start of the war, we’ve endured hunger, deprivation, and fear,” said Mohammed al-Ajrami, a displaced resident of Gaza City. “People here have little trust in any initiative involving the same actors they hold responsible for their suffering.”“What we want is aid that preserves our dignity,” he told Xinhua. “International institutions like the United Nations have treated us with humanity. We don’t want conditional aid tied to political or military oversight.”Similar sentiments were echoed by Salah al-Ja’farawi, also from Gaza City. “After 18 years of blockade and over 19 months of war, people will not accept aid that comes at the expense of their dignity,” he said. “Emergency help is one thing, but if the long-term plan is to erode our rights, it will not be accepted.”The aid plan, announced this week by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, aims to provide food to roughly 1.2 million people — about 60 percent of Gaza’s population — through four distribution centers inside the enclave. The operation will be managed by a newly established private entity, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and secured by U.S. contractors, with the Israeli military guarding the perimeter.Speaking at a briefing in Jerusalem on Friday, Huckabee said the objective was to prevent Hamas from diverting aid, reiterating longstanding Israeli claims that the group exploits humanitarian supplies. But in Gaza, many view the plan as an extension of foreign control. Rami al-Najjar, a local humanitarian worker, said aid should be delivered through neutral channels.“People trust international organizations to distribute aid professionally, without political agendas,” he said. “Introducing military actors into this process sends the wrong message.”Palestinians receive free food from a food distribution center in Gaza City, on May 9, 2025. (Photo by Rizek Abdeljawad/Xinhua)The United Nations and other humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned against politicizing aid and confirmed that, under existing mechanisms, most supplies have reached civilians despite logistical challenges. The situation in Gaza has sharply deteriorated in recent months. In March, Israel tightened its blockade, restricting shipments of food, medicine, and fuel. Aid agencies report worsening food insecurity, with rising malnutrition rates, particularly among women and children.Hussam al-Dajani, a Gaza-based political analyst, said the joint U.S.-Israeli plan appears driven by strategic considerations rather than humanitarian ones.“This initiative seems less about saving lives and more about reducing Hamas’s influence,” he said. “Locally, it’s viewed not as a humanitarian lifeline but as a new form of control.”He warned that using private contractors and foreign armies in aid delivery risks further alienating the population.“Palestinians see this as an attempt to manufacture dependency and enforce compliance. Aid should not be a tool of coercion,” he said.Dajani urged the United Nations to take the lead. “The UN has the mandate and the trust to deliver impartial relief. People here are calling for an international response free from political interference.”■Share on: WhatsAppThe post Gazans reject US-Israeli aid distribution plan, call for enhanced UN role appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "LONDON, UK | Xinhua | Manchester City’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League suffered a surprise setback on Saturday when Pep Guardiola’s side was held to a 0-0 draw away to Southampton.City had Erling Haaland available again, but the Norwegian’s presence couldn’t help his side break down a Southampton side that may have been relegated to the Championship several weeks ago, but that needed a point to avoid going down with the joint worst ever record.Omar Marmoush hit the crossbar late on for City, but despite managing 26 shots in the game, the visiting side had just five on target, while Southampton had just two shots, neither of which was on target during the match.Ollie Watkins’ goal in the first injury time saw Aston Villa to a narrow 1-0 win away to Bournemouth.Villa has moved onto 63 points, while the result probably ends Bournemouth’s hopes of playing in Europe next season, even though Andoni Iraola’s side created more chances in the game and ended up against 10 men after Jacob Ramsey’s 80th-minute red card.Brighton and Brentford both kept their hopes of playing in Europe alive with Danny Welbeck and Brajan Gruda scoring as Brighton took advantage of a rival that had nothing to play for to claim three vital points.Kevin Schade’s 18th-minute goal saw Brentford to a 1-0 win away to relegated Ipswich, with Brentford now taking 22 points from the last 27 possible away from home to move onto 55 points.Vitalii Mykolenko, Michael Keane and Beto all scored as Everton won 3-1 away to Fulham, who had opened the scoring through Raul Jimenez. ■Share on: WhatsAppThe post Southampton holds Man City to shock draw as Aston Villa closes in on Champions League appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "BERLIN, GERMANY | Xinhua | Bayern Munich sealed its Bundesliga title celebrations with a 2-0 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the 33rd round match on an emotional night that marked Thomas Muller’s final game in red on Saturday. All eyes were on Muller as he led the team out for his 750th and final appearance at the Allianz Arena. The veteran, who has won 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues with the club, received a roaring ovation and was honored with a fan choreography. After a quiet start, Michael Olise brought Bayern to life in the 31st minute. Cutting inside from the right, he curled a shot past Monchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin for Harry Kane to open the scoring. The goal was Kane’s 25th of the season, making him the first Bayern player to reach that mark in each of his first two Bundesliga campaigns.Monchengladbach had its moments, with Tim Kleindienst, Rocco Reitz and Tomas Cvancara all testing Manuel Neuer, who returned from injury to put in an impeccable performance. The Bayern captain made several fine saves from close range to keep his clean sheet intact.Muller came close to scoring himself on several occasions but was unable to find the net on his special night. He was taken off in the 84th minute to a standing ovation from all sides of the stadium as his teammates lined up for a guard of honor. In the dying moments of the game, Olise capped a remarkable evening by finishing off a slick move involving Leroy Sane to make it 2-0.“I’m not sure who felt the emotions more, Thomas or the Bayern fans. In the years to come, we’ll truly realize just how important he was for this club,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.Elsewhere, bottom club Holstein Kiel was relegated to the second tier after a 2-1 defeat at fourth-placed Freiburg. Bochum was also relegated as Mainz moved into the top six with a 4-1 win. Leipzig shared the spoils with Werder Bremen and has no chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Heidenheim shocked Union Berlin 3-0 to move into the relegation play-off zone, while Hoffenheim was held to a 2-2 draw by Wolfsburg. ■Share on: WhatsAppThe post Bundesliga: Bayern crowned title with 2-0 win on Muller’s farewell night appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "The Member of Parliament for Ruhama East County, Hon. Benjamin Kamukama has commended Col. Joseph Bahikire, Col Strategy J5, for writing an inspiring book about his life.“It’s a great moment for us who grew up with him and have known him for a very long time. It is a great honor for me to be here and be part of this launch not only as your friend but also as a chief guest. I want to appreciate you, my brother Col. Joseph Bahikire and congratulate you upon joining this great family of authors in Uganda,” said. Hon. Kamukama, a close and childhood friend of Col. Bahikire.Hon. Kamukama made the remarks on Friday 9th May, 2025 during the launch of “Refusing to Quit”, a book by Col. Bahikire. The event took place at Uaminifu Officers Club, SFC Headquarters, Entebbe. The book tells a story of survivability: the “from huts to bungalows scenario”. It is a book of personal growth in an environment of uncertainties and a personal account of someone’s life as a growing up child in a poor but strict and peaceful family where life rotated on subsistence farming. The book tells a story of a student who could not make it to higher institutions of learning and almost lost hope, but where failure turned into a blessing in disguise.Col. Bahikire is a UPDF serving military officer. He is a graduate of the prestigious Defence College Staff College Karen, Kenya and holds a diploma in international relations and diplomacy from the University of Nairobi and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the same field at Nkumba University.Hon. Kamukama also called upon well wishers to support Col. Bahikire by buying his books.“We all know that he is not just launching but he is also selling these books. He is not about to retire but I think this is one of the ventures and sources he will use to fund his life when he retires from this great family of UPDF. These books will be in different shelves of bookshops,” he stated.Hon. Kamukama further lauded Col. Bahikire for being a supportive friend who has touched the lives of many people.“We are almost the same age but I remember in 1995, I Wanted to study during holiday but I didn’t have a place to stay. He gave me where to stay in his small room. Of course there are very many other things he has done, he has been there for us.”The Chief of Staff of Special Forces Command (SFC), Brig. Gen. Paul Namawa, who represented the SFC Commander, Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, described Col. Bahikire as a teacher, and a mentor who loves his country and gives his best when given an assignment.“He always aspires to do his best,”Brig. Gen. Namawa said.“Bahikire is basically a teacher and I think that’s how God created him, in whatever he does, he tries to teach. I believe this book will be circulated all over the world.”Brig. Gen. Namawa also challenged fellow officers in uniform to borrow a leaf from Col. Bahikire and also author books about their life and other important life stories.“You should start keeping your diaries so that tomorrow if there is a need to emulate him and do what he has done, you will be able to do something and that also includes myself; I’m also advising myself,”he said. The Chairman of the book launch organising committee, Brig. Gen. Gerald Ahimbisibwe, who serves as the Director of Plans and Policy – UPDF Lands Forces, extended sincere gratitude to the author of the book for having put together an incredible book.“We stand here today to celebrate your success. I congratulate you. I also take this opportunity to thank all of you who in one way or the other contributed to the successful launch of this book,” he said.Brig. Gen. Ahimbisibwe further gave an insight into Col. Bahikire’s book.“In his book he talks about how he grew up as a deprived person in a humble home and amidst that deprivation, there was peace in that home. He also makes a comparison of what H.E the President talks about on getting out of poverty in a grass thatched house to a home of bricks and iron sheets. That’s the story of Col. Joseph Bahikire,” he said.“Despite growing up in such a home, he was able to join one of the most prestigious schools in Western Uganda- the Ntare School. That shows you the character of the individual we are talking about. He also got a chance to join the mighty Uganda People’s Defence Forces, a force that has turned him into a senior officer.”On his part,Col. Bahikire said “Refusing to Quit” is not just his journey but a mirror for everyone who has ever felt trapped by doubt, overwhelmed by obstacles and abandoned in their pursuit of joy and success“It is a voice that whispers that you are not alone and shouts your capability more than you can imagine. It is dedicated to those who dare to keep walking even when the road is invisible and those who search for light no matter how far it is,” he said.“I want you to know this, your struggles do not define you, but your response to them does. Embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Know that stumbling is not failure, it’s merely a stepping stone to push you towards progress. Believe in yourself even when the world feels indifferent and never underestimate the power of a single determined heart.”He also expressed his deepest gratitude to all the individuals who made it possible for him to be who he is today and to those who have stood by him.He thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is also Commander in Chief of UPDF for his extraordinary leadership, unwavering determination and dedication to progress and prosperity of Uganda.“Mzee is not a leader whom you can find anywhere else. His efforts have transformed our nation into a symbol of hope and prosperity. He is not just a President, he is an architect of progress and a unifier of people and a beacon of inspiration. Through his able leadership, Mzee’s vision has propelled us to new horizons of fostering growth and innovation and ensuring that every citizen is given the opportunity to thrive,” Col. Bahikire noted.“I also extend my appreciation to the CDF, Gen. Muhoozi Kaneirugaba who has given us opportunities, equipped our forces with the tools, training and resilience needed to progress as a formidable force.”On behalf of the friends of the author, Brig. Gen. Charles Asingura said Col. Bahikire is dependable, exemplary in everything that he does, very resilient, bold, go-getter and his integrity is not questionable.“We are here to celebrate the fruits of an extraordinary officer,” he noted. The post Refusing to Quit! It represents a core component of MTN Uganda’s broader strategy to strengthen digital connectivity and elevate overall customer satisfaction levels nationwide.Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Uganda, highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative.“This upgrade is about transforming the daily digital experiences of millions of Ugandans,” Mulinge stated.“From students streaming lectures to entrepreneurs managing mobile transactions, our enhanced network will enable every individual to reach their full potential. Together, our network is unstoppable.”The upgrade is being implemented in a phased approach across Uganda. The Greater Central region is receiving the most extensive improvements, accounting for 35% of the work. The West region follows with 19%, the Southwest with 15%, the North with 12%, and both the East and Central regions receiving 9% each. This targeted rollout is designed to increase coverage, reliability, and capacity in both densely populated urban areas and underserved rural communities. To minimise disruption to customers, the majority of the upgrade work is being conducted during late-night hours. However, MTN has advised customers that occasional temporary service interruptions may occur as enhancements are carried out.The primary objective of this initiative is to boost the reliability, speed, and clarity of MTN’s core offerings, including voice calls, high-speed internet, mobile money services, and enterprise solutions provided through MTN Business.Mackinnon Kabarole, Acting Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda, reaffirmed the company’s customer-centric approach.“At MTN Uganda, our customers are always at the heart of what we do,” Kabarole said. “This upgrade aligns perfectly with our ambition to be a leading force in digital solutions for Africa’s growth. We are confident that our customers will feel the positive impact of these improvements.”Kabarole also expressed gratitude for customers' patience and continued loyalty during the upgrade period, emphasising MTN’s dedication to building a robust, future-ready network. “We are working diligently to build a faster, smarter network that drives business, supports dreams, and connects Uganda like never before,” he added.Customers requiring support during the upgrade can contact the MTN Uganda Customer Experience team via the toll-free line 100 or on the social media platform X (@mtnug).MTN Uganda also took the opportunity to remind its customers to remain vigilant against fraud, noting that official calls from MTN originate solely from the number 0312120000. For regulatory concerns, customers can contact the Uganda Communications Commission at 0800222777.This comprehensive network upgrade is a key part of MTN Uganda’s long-term commitment to its Ambition 2025 strategy, reinforcing the company’s vision that “Together, our network is unstoppable.”Share on: WhatsAppThe post MTN Uganda launches nationwide network upgrade appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "The suspect Godfrey MuhumuzaKAMPALA, UGANDA | THE INDEPENDENT | A teacher at Kabojja Junior School has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with attempted homosexuality involving an 11-year-old boy.Godfrey Muwumuza, 43, appeared before Buganda Road Court on Friday, where he was charged under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023. The charge stems from allegations that he sexually abused the boy during a school trip on May 4 and 5.The teacher is accused of making the child touch his genitals and attempting further acts while in transit. According to court files, the child alerted his mother via WhatsApp, prompting a police report and subsequent arrest.“...another pupil came and he let the victim go. He did the same while on the bus as he sat next to the boy and kept on dragging the boy’s hand and could make the boy touch his P...” The record read in part.Although police records reportedly contain a confession from the suspect, Muwumuza denied the allegations when he appeared in court. Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi advised him to apply for bail and ordered his remand to Luzira Prison until May 19, pending the completion of investigations. The Anti-Homosexuality Act prescribes the death penalty for cases of “aggravated homosexuality,” particularly where the act involves minors, persons with disabilities, or situations where drugs or alcohol may have impaired a person’s judgment.Attempting to commit any offence outlined in the Act is also criminalised and, upon conviction, carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. However, such cases remain highly sensitive, as some suspects have previously been falsely accused. To address this, the Anti-Homosexuality Act includes a provision criminalising false accusations. Under the law, anyone who falsely accuses another of an offence under the Act commits a crime and, upon conviction, is liable to up to one year in prison. An allegation is considered false if, during investigation or prosecution, it is proven that the act did not occur or that the report was made with malicious intent.Incidents involving teachers, who are entrusted with the safety and well-being of children, engaging in sexual abuse have become increasingly common. While most reported cases involve male teachers abusing female pupils, there are also growing reports of male teachers sexually assaulting male pupils. A similar case was reported in Lira District in April.According to the Uganda Police’s 2024 Annual Crime Report, over 12,000 cases of child defilement were recorded in 2023, with boys accounting for around 309 of those. Teachers were among the leading perpetrators after parents and guardians.Meanwhile, in the broader social context, recent reports and public discourse have raised concerns about the alleged promotion of sex deviant activities in schools by both teachers and students. In recent years, the matter sparked heated debate in Parliament, with lawmakers ordering an official probe into the extent and influence of such claims within the education system.Historical accounts also suggest that cases of same-sex abuse by teachers are not a new phenomenon in Uganda. Researcher Carol Summers highlighted this issue in her paper titled “Subterranean Evil and Tumultuous Riot in Buganda: Authority and Alienation at King’s College, Budo, 1942.” In it, the researcher described reported patterns of sexual exploitation in the elite school, including the exchange of sexual favours for gifts and privileges, underscoring long-standing concerns about power, abuse, and institutional silence in educational settings.***URNShare on: WhatsAppThe post Kabojja teacher remanded over alleged sexual abuse of pupil appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea with effect from 17:00 local time today. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding,” Misri said at a press briefing in New Delhi.According to Misri, the DGMOs will talk again on May 12 at 12:00 local time.On Wednesday, India launched airstrikes on Pakistani targets to avenge last month’s killing of 26 people by gunmen in Pahalgam town, about 89 km east of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled Kashmir. The situation along the LoC dividing Kashmir had been tense as troops of India and Pakistan deployed on both sides of the ceasefire line were engaged in an exchange of fire and artillery. ■Share on: WhatsAppThe post Pakistan, India agree on ceasefire with immediate effect appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "MEXICO CITY, the United States | Xinhua | Mexico has filed a legal lawsuit against Google for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America” on Google Maps for American users, arguing that the move violates the sovereignty and international recognition of Mexican territory, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday.Sheinbaum told a regular morning press conference that Google has already been sued and that “a first resolution” has been issued, awaiting compliance. The United States could “change the name of a state, a mountain, a lake” and call it “whatever they decide” if it is within its territory, but those on the Mexican and Cuban sides cannot be renamed, said the Mexican president, noting that Google must clearly distinguish the respective areas. The dispute occurred amid ongoing tariff tensions, primarily over immigration and security issues. Authorities from both countries have held meetings to reach an agreement.Sheinbaum has held six telephone conversations with her U.S. counterpart Donald Trump. She said she has maintained a “cordial dialogue” with Trump, but the Gulf name issue has not been addressed.“We have not touched it. What we propose is: they have a resolution where they have the right, but not to name the entire Gulf, but the (part) corresponding to their territory,” said the Mexican president. ■Share on: WhatsAppThe post Mexico sues Google over Gulf of Mexico name change appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "KAMPALA, UGANDA | THE INDEPENDENT | A high-level delegation from MTN Group, led by Chairman Mcebisi Jonas and Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, visited Uganda this week to engage with national leaders and key stakeholders, reaffirming the company’s ongoing commitment to the country as a vital part of its pan-African growth strategy. The visit, which forms part of a broader engagement initiative bringing together board chairs from MTN’s operating companies and senior executives, aimed to strengthen relationships with government and industry leaders. The discussions focused on aligning on shared priorities and advancing MTN’s efforts to support Uganda’s digital and socio-economic development.Key highlights of the visit included a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House in Entebbe, as well as a stakeholder dinner hosted by MTN, attended by senior government officials, regulators, and leaders from the private sector. During the State House meeting, President Museveni welcomed MTN’s continued investment in Uganda, stressing the importance of targeting sectors that drive job creation and economic expansion. “If people have jobs and incomes, they will buy more phones and use them more,” Museveni said. “That’s why we must invest in the four key sectors of wealth and job creation: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT.” He also encouraged MTN to explore cross-border investment opportunities to foster regional integration and intra-African trade.Uganda holds special significance for MTN, having been the first country outside South Africa to grant the Group a telecommunications licence in 1998. This licence marked the beginning of MTN’s international expansion and laid the groundwork for its current position as one of Africa’s leading digital infrastructure providers. Today, MTN Uganda remains a critical market for the Group, both commercially and in terms of developmental impact.Jonas, MTN Group Chairman, expressed gratitude for the strong collaboration between MTN and the Government of Uganda.“We are here to express our appreciation for the continued support we have received. MTN is not here for the short term—we are here for the long haul,” Jonas said.He also highlighted the potential for strengthening trade and business links between Uganda and South Africa.“We believe there is a real opportunity to help Ugandan businesses enter the South African market, and that is something we can explore further,” added.Share on: WhatsAppThe post MTN Group delegation visits Uganda, pays courtesy visit to President Yoweri Museveni appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

The project, valued at over TZS 14 billion (sh18.9 billion), is expected to be completed over the next two yearsIn a landmark ceremony that highlighted deep-rooted diplomatic ties and regional unity, Uganda officially broke ground on the construction of its new High Commission Chancery in the Government City of Mtumba, Dodoma on Friday. The foundation stone for the chancery was laid in a vibrant ceremony attended by dignitaries from both nations, that officials said reflected the spirit of Pan-African solidarity and forward-looking diplomacy.“We have seen something remarkable I would never imagine,”remarked Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, Director and Chief of Protocol at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “This generous donation of land not only reflects goodwill to our country, but also plays a vital role in enhancing our cooperation. Our presence here will help extend services to Ugandans and deepen bilateral engagement. Where you stand is where we stand.”The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania generously allocated five acres of prime land to the Ugandan Government, marking a strategic move in aligning diplomatic infrastructure with the country’s capital relocation from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma.“Today’s event is not just about laying a foundation stone,” emphasized Fred Opolot, Deputy Chairperson of Uganda’s Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. “It marks a bold reaffirmation of Uganda’s long-term diplomatic presence and is a thoughtful response to Tanzania’s visionary capital relocation policy.”Representing the host nation, Denis Londo, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of Tanzania, noted “This chancery will not only be a workplace but a bridge of collaboration, reflecting our shared cultures and reinforcing the unique bond between our sister countries.”“In support of our cause, the government of Uganda emerges as the first governments to establish their diplomatic offices here in Dodoma. Congratulations on this decision, we don’t take it for granted.” he enthused.ALL SMILES: Ugandan and Tanzanian officials. (Retired) Fred Mwesigye stressed the moment’s significance.“The Chancery, once completed, will stand as a symbol of Uganda’s sovereignty, identity, and commitment to building stronger ties with our partners particularly the United Republic of Tanzania, a country with which we share profound historical, cultural, and economic bonds,” he said. The event also highlighted the development strides of Dodoma. Regional Commissioner Rosemary S. Senyamule praised the ease of connectivity brought by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and noted, “Dodoma is emerging as a strategic and vibrant hub. The presence of the Uganda High Commission here reflects a commitment to direct engagement and growing investment opportunities.”Officials said that as the construction begins, the new chancery is set to not only embody architectural excellence but also become a center for regional cooperation, cultural exchange, and the strengthening of Uganda-Tanzania relations for generations to come.Share on: WhatsAppThe post Uganda set to start building new sh18.9 billion High Commission Chancery in Tanzania appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "Black Pirates needed Extra Time to hold off a determined Jinja Hippos to win the 2024-25 Uganda Rugby Premiership at Kings Park. The Sea Robbers scored three unanswered converted tries in extra time after normal time had ended 23 all after Ivan Magomu missed a point-blank conversion of his own try at the death.Pirates got on the scoreboard inside five minutes. Isaac Massa broke line with a strong carry and Hippos were offside. Willam Nkore called for tee inside the 22 and converted penalty for an early 03-00 lead. Two exit kicks from Conrad Wanyama and Nkore earned Hippos a couple of scrums but the Sea Robbers made sure to hold strong and coupled with good defense when the ball was out in open play, Hippos scoring was delayed but not for long. The Hippos camped in Pirates red zone, earning multiple penalties. From a scrum, skipper Tonny Kadhambi found room to run through and ground near the posts with Yasin Wasswa adding extras for a 07-03 lead. After water break, Massa made some strong carries and Pirates quickly recycled from phases through Timothy Kisiga, with Haruna Muhammad at the end to stretch over the white chalk. Nkore converted to restore the 3-point lead for the hosts, 10-07.As halftime approached, Pirates set up Nkore for a drop goal after a clean line out playing under advantage to extend the lead to 13-07.The Hippos went hunting again and Terry Okore found room on the right wing to break tackles and run through for a try. Wasswa converted to put Hippos in the lead, 14-13, at the halftime break.Pirates returned for the second half with a bit of urgency and went hunting early in with multiple phases, as Conrad Wanyama grounded but Nkore missed the conversion from point-blank range.Muhammad would turn on the self-destruct mode gifting Hippos points opportunities. He had chance to clear but didn’t, and Pirates conceded a penalty that Wasswa converted. The Hippos flyhalf would add a pair of penalties and the Jinja side went ahead 23-18 to send the away fans in a frenzy as the home side faithful went quiet. The Sea Robbers rose from the dead thanks to “messiah” Ivan Magomu who scored near the posts after multiple phases. He however missed an easy conversion and the game went into Extra Time. The Hippos went cold in the addition 30 minutes as Pirates ran in 3 tries courtesy of Timothy Kisiga, Jones Kamiza and Haruna Muhammad, all converted by Magomu. The post Black Pirates outlast Jinja Hippos in Extra Time to win third league title appeared first on Kawowo Sports.",

      • "content": "Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN CEOKAMPALA, UGANDA | THE INDEPENDENT | Bayobab Uganda, the digital infrastructure division of MTN Group, officially launched a significant new fibre optic route utilising the Uganda Railway corridor between Kampala and Malaba. Hailed as the shortest and fastest connection, the Uganda Railway National Long Distance (NLD) route spans 260 kilometres, establishing a vital digital link between Uganda’s capital and the Kenyan border. This strategic infrastructure project, completed between December 2024 and February 2025, is a cornerstone of MTN’s commitment to expanding connectivity across its operational markets. By leveraging the existing railway network in collaboration with Uganda Railway, Bayobab has created a high-capacity, reliable pathway for internet traffic. The new route seamlessly connects Kampala to Bayobab’s subsea cable landing stations in Mombasa, Kenya, capitalising on the recently activated Mombasa to Malaba/Busia fibre route. This integration completes a crucial section of East Africa’s digital backbone, enhancing regional connectivity and providing a robust alternative to existing fibre networks.Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held in Kampala on May 07, Juliet Nsubuga, the Managing Director of Bayobab Uganda, said that Bayobab Uganda heeded the call for technological transformation across the nation and the region to benefit its communities with reliable and accessible connectivity to the internet.“In collaboration with the Uganda Railway, we leveraged the existing rail network to deploy fibre, enhancing connectivity and providing high-speed internet access to communities along the line, connecting key routes between Kampala and Malaba at the Kenyan border – and beyond,” said Nsubuga, “This new route caters to the needs of international and national technology and digital players, telecoms and ISPs that serve the communities demonstrating our belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life.”As a landlocked nation, Uganda’s access to high-speed internet and global digital infrastructure relies heavily on cross-border connectivity. This new route provides the shortest and newest connection from Kampala to the Kenya–Uganda border, leveraging the Bayobab Kenya infrastructure to reach Mombasa subsea landing points. The route serves as a powerful alternative to existing fibre systems, offering route diversity and significantly improved network reliability through low latency and increased resilience.Speaking on behalf of Hon. Nyombi Tembo, the Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission, Julianne Mweheire welcomed the milestone. He stated that: “The new route adds to the existing fibre network, connecting Uganda to the Kenya border and should increase the already existing redundancy of connectivity access for Uganda as a whole. This launch aligns perfectly with Uganda’s national agenda to digitise services, expand connectivity, and close the gap between urban and rural access.”Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN CEO, affirmed that the launch of the Kampala–Malaba Fibre Optic Route is a bold statement of MTN’s vision of ensuring that every Ugandan, wherever they live, experiences the benefits of a modern connected life.“Imagine a startup in Lira testing its mobile app on cloud platforms without delays. A farmer in Kayunga checks real-time weather patterns to guide planting decisions. A remote school in Kisoro is livestreaming science lessons from a national university. This is what a modern connected life looks like, and this is what we are enabling,” Mulinge said.Bayobab, the digital infrastructure unit of Africa’s largest telecom group, MTN, is building out pan-African fibre infrastructure to meet rising demand from telecom operators, internet service providers, and global technology firms. The new route supports over 1 terabyte (TB) of capacity and offers low-latency, high-redundancy connectivity to key data centres in Kampala, including Raxio, Airtel House, and MTN Uganda, enabling improved and seamless interconnection options for service providers and hyperscalers.Bayobab’s infrastructure opens up new opportunities for hyperscalers, cloud providers and enterprise customers to operate and invest in Uganda. The company reiterated its long-term goal of enabling Africa’s digital economy by connecting people, businesses, and markets across the continent.Share on: WhatsAppThe post Bayobab Uganda activates key fibre optic cable along railway line linking Kampala and Malaba. appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

Students debated motions such as whether schools should admit only NIRA-registered students and whether lost or damaged National IDs should be replaced free of charge.Schools that attended included Nyakasura School, Muni Girls Secondary School, St. Henry’s College Kitovu, and Sebei College Tegeres. Primary schools such as Tennessee Valley, Nakivubo Blue, and Nabumali PS participated as levelers in the audience, observing the debates and engaging with the topics.NIRA Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo emphasized the importance of youth participation in the registration process, noting that 18.2 million Ugandans, most of them under 17, remain unregistered. She stated that a National Identification Number is essential for accessing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.Internal Affairs State Minister Gen. David Muhoozi commended the students for their insights and highlighted NIRA’s preparations for the mass enrollment, including the deployment of 5,665 biometric registration kits and high-capacity card printers.Currently, only 5.2 million children in Uganda have legal identification, leaving approximately 70 percent without official documentation. The debate served as both a competition and a platform for raising awareness about national ID registration. The Ministry of Education and Sports integrated the event into its civic education curriculum, while Debate Society Uganda ensured high standards of discussion and participation.NIRA urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to support the enrollment campaign, emphasizing that a National ID is a fundamental right for all Ugandans. The success of the debate underscored the role of young people in shaping national discourse and driving civic engagement.Share on: WhatsAppThe post Mbale SS wins 2025 NIRA schools debate appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

COURTESY PHOTOMTN Group delegation visits Uganda, pays courtesy visit to President Yoweri MuseveniEntebbe, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A high-level delegation from MTN Group, led by Chairman Mcebisi Jonas and Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, visited Uganda this week to engage with national leaders and key stakeholders, reaffirming the company’s ongoing commitment to the country as a vital part of its pan-African growth strategy. The visit, which forms part of a broader engagement initiative bringing together board chairs from MTN’s operating companies and senior executives, aimed to strengthen relationships with government and industry leaders. The discussions focused on aligning on shared priorities and advancing MTN’s efforts to support Uganda’s digital and socio-economic development.Key highlights of the visit included a meeting Friday with President Yoweri Museveni at State House in Entebbe, as well as a stakeholder dinner hosted by MTN, attended by senior government officials, regulators, and leaders from the private sector.During the State House meeting, President Museveni welcomed MTN’s continued investment in Uganda, stressing the importance of targeting sectors that drive job creation and economic expansion. “If people have jobs and incomes, they will buy more phones and use them more,” Museveni said.“That’s why we must invest in the four key sectors of wealth and job creation: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT.” He also encouraged MTN to explore cross-border investment opportunities to foster regional integration and intra-African trade.MTN Officials brief Museveni at the Entebbe meeting I’m glad to see how much MTN has grown. I remember when it first started; Mzee Mandela called me on a small phone. That was the beginning of MTN. pic.twitter.com/Je689pb1Wn— Yoweri K Museveni (@KagutaMuseveni) May 10, 2025Uganda holds special significance for MTN, having been the first country outside South Africa to grant the Group a telecommunications licence in 1998. MTN is not here for the short term—we are here for the long haul,” Jonas said.He also highlighted the potential for strengthening trade and business links between Uganda and South Africa.“We believe there is a real opportunity to help Ugandan businesses enter the South African market, and that is something we can explore further,” added.Share on: WhatsAppThe post MTN reaffirms commitment to Uganda as strategic market appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

      • "content": "Kansiime performs in front of a huge crowd at SheratonKampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Sheraton Gardens on Friday hosted a night of laughter, wit and unapologetic roasting with the Comedy Grill toasting 10 years of Anne Kansiime. The evening started with an air of excitement and a warm red-carpet welcome as guests were tastefully snapped and then handed a signature Uganda Waragi Lemon & Ginger cocktail that paired perfectly with the roasts to follow. Before the main Grill, comedian Daniel Omara set the tone with a short but sizzling stand-up set, teasing the crowd with sample roasts in the style of what was to come. The official proceedings kicked off with lively introductions by the dynamic MC duo of Tuwangye Richard and Deedan Muyiira, who introduced the stellar lineup of “Grill Chefs. The roasters featured a blend of familiar faces and fresh comedic voices, including Salvador, Madrat and Chico, Nana Kagga, GNL Zamba, Gaetano Kaggwa, Dr. Miria Matembe, Prim Asiimwe and Skylanta, who each delivered a unique set that showcased the breadth and depth of Ugandan talent.Speaking at the show, Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries said, “Seeing such incredible talent come together was truly special. As Uganda Waragi Lemon and Ginger, we’re proud to have sparked this unforgettable night of fun in a way that authentically reflects who we are as Ugandans.”Anne Kansiime made a grand entrance in a flowery pink gown, embracing the playful humiliation with grace and humor as she took her seat for the grill to fully commence. The first Grill chef to step up was seasoned hip-hop veteran GNL Zamba, who landed playful jabs at his fellow chefs and Kansiime. The night got more and more heated up with each next set as followed as claps and clapbacks flew across the stage and left the audience in stitches.COMEDY: Miria Matembe does her thingWhen Kansiime finally took the mic, she was clearly taking it all in good nature and between laughs remarked that, “You have let me make a fool of myself and now my heart is full.”She then dished out a few shots and heartfelt words of gratitude to the guests, grillers, sponsors and all who have seen her through her 10-year journey that led to this remarkable night. As the show came to a close, the atmosphere left revellers with what felt like a first taste of a flavorful addition to the comedic offerings on Uganda’s entertainment scene.Share on: WhatsAppThe post Uganda Waragi adds flavor to Anne Kansiime 10-year Grill appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

The crowd started building up at around 10am, as they waited for Echodu’s entry to Soroti via Awoja Bridge.Echodu announced his candidacy on April 2 in Kampala, and his campaign has quickly gained traction among party leaders and grassroots members disillusioned with Mukula, who has held the post for more than two decades.Mukula’s critics accuse him of often presiding and concentrating on personal consolidation at the expense of development in the sub-region.“While Teso struggled with war, poverty, and cattle loss, Mukula was busy consolidating power,” Otuko charged.“Echodu, on the other hand, remained loyal to the party and served with humility.”He cited Echodu’s philanthropic work through Pilgrim Africa, which has supported over 10,000 students, as well as his consistent advocacy for cattle compensation and cultural preservation, as evidence of leadership grounded in public service. In a sign of how sharply the fault lines have deepened, NRM district chairpersons in the region have begun speaking out openly against Mukula.https://t.co/xhNTuqcMtd— Calvin Echodu (@EchoduOfficial) May 10, 2025On Thursday, Katakwi’s party chair John Richard Opio said Mukula’s time was up.“He has fought fellow NRM members instead of building the party. People are tired,” Opio said. From Amuria, Isaac Okello Omiat called Mukula’s tenure “disunited and silent,” blaming him for stalling youth development and ignoring rural priorities.“Echodu is the fresh start Teso needs,” he said.Even Soroti’s NRM chairperson, also a presidential advisor, accused Mukula of betrayal.“We’ve been threatened for speaking out, but enough is enough. The region must rise above fear and reclaim its voice.”The Soroti rally, according to organizers, is more than a celebration—it is a declaration of political renewal and accountability.“This Saturday will mark the beginning of a new era,” Otuko said.“An era where service takes precedence over self-interest. Where leaders are chosen for their performance, not their proximity to power.”Echodu arrives at the Soroti venue todayShare on: WhatsAppThe post Soroti erupts as Calvin Echodu homecoming sets mouthwatering NRM CEC clash appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

Students debated motions such as whether schools should admit only NIRA- registered students and whether lost or damaged National IDs should be replaced free of charge.NIRA Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo emphasized the importance of youth participation in the registration process, noting that 18.2 million Ugandans, most of them under 17, remain unregistered. The success of the debate underscored the role of young people in shaping national discourse and driving civic engagement.Share on: WhatsAppThe post Mbale Secondary School wins 2025 NIRA schools debate appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",

The 2023 Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand featured 32 teams for the first time. The quadrennial event will be held in Brazil in 2027.The men’s World Cup will be expanded to 48 teams in the 2026 edition to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. ■Share on: WhatsAppThe post FIFA Women’s World Cup to increase to 48 teams from 2031 appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.",
