      • "description": "They say the claims come from an AI-generated audio.",
      • "content": "In a shocking audio recording revealed by Kim Sae-ron’s family, at a press conference in Seoul on May 7, the late actress allegedly admits to establishing an intimate relationship with Kim Soo-hyun, while she was in middle school. The ‘Queen of Tears’ star has been accused of dating Sae-ron when she was 15, a minor, and he was 27. Kim Soo-hyun’s agency has refuted the new allegations claiming that the audio recording is not real and was generated by an AI tool. The audio in question doesn’t only feature Kim Sae-ron allegedly stating she “did it” with him first time while in 8th grade, but also claims that Kim Soo-hyun would sleep with other idols and send her photos of them. In a lengthy statement, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency has slammed Sae-ron’s family and Garo Sero Research Institute, the YouTube channel that first exposed the scandal. “Garo Sero claimed they had obtained an audio recording of the late actress Kim Sae-ron at the press conference. However, the recordings were forged entirely, and Gold Medalist believes that the audio files were created using AI,” said the agency. \"I had sex with #KimSoohyun for the first time during the winter vacation in the second year of middle school,\" said South Korean actress #KimSaeron in a recording revealed by her family today. #SouthKorea pic.twitter.com/tPYG7FHwoU — Shanghai Daily (@shanghaidaily) May 7, 2025 They also claimed that the person who first approached them with the audio recording was a “fraud” and demanded money from the company. “The recording file in question was a manipulated version of her voice, and the agency did not accept any of the requests from the informant,” suggests the agency. They assured of conducting a technical verification of the audio recording and sharing the result to clarify the issue with proper evidence. So Soohyun had sex with Kim Saeron when she was in 8th grade. IMAGINE. EIGHT GRADE!!!!! This is so beyond disgusting! Oh my God. Even anybody's still choosing to defend him after watching this, let me tell you, you don't deserve to have children. https://t.co/oYQ954OjZZ — anggie (@angee_wonii) May 7, 2025 Kim Soo-hyun’s agency said they’ll do everything in their power to ensure Garo Sero receives strict punishment for releasing a fake audio. “The Garo Sero press conference was yet another fabrication cornered with defamation, stalking, cybersexual crimes, and evidence fabrication against Kim Soo Hyun. Gold Medalist was in shock at Garo Sero’s press conference, which can be seen as evidence that his various claims are false and fabricated. Garo Sero is using a new type of crime using AI. It is a serious crime that attempts to destroy Kim Soo Hyun’s reputation based on forged evidence, and it will most definitely receive the corresponding punishment,” the agency concluded. Kim Soohyun’s fans sent a support truck in front of Garo Sero Institute and Late Kim Saeron’s family’s press conference. #KimSooHyun #KimSaeron pic.twitter.com/K8G9frqffm — KoreadeoK (@koreadeok) May 7, 2025 In the wake of the defaming audio, Kim Soo-hyun’s fans have sent support trucks in his name near the venue where Kim Sae-ron’s family held the press conference.",

      • "description": "PKR’s current deputy president and Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said on Wednesday (May 7) that he would defend his post, ending speculation that he would step aside.",
      • "content": "KUALA LUMPUR: The race for deputy presidency in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political party - and presumptive heir-apparent to him - is heating up, with his daughter gaining support as a challenger in a potential three-way race involving incumbent Rafizi Ramli, who finally confirmed his intent to defend his post after weeks of uncertainty. Rafizi, who is Malaysia’s economy minister, has been in the spotlight this week after his leave of absence sparked speculation that he might resign from the Cabinet and step aside from contesting at the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)’s leadership polls later this month. A key reason cited was how at the party’s divisional polls last month, several bigwigs aligned with him were defeated by opponents believed to be aligned with Anwar , thus weakening his chances of retaining his post. In a statement on Wednesday (May 7), Rafizi said he will defend his post with Anwar’s blessing. “I welcome the contest for the position of (PKR) Deputy President in this election and will participate alongside other candidates in using this platform to strengthen the party,” he said. He said he had met party president Anwar as well as Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail during his leave of absence and told them he was willing to not defend his party post and to leave the Cabinet to focus on grassroots work. “Both of them said that there was a need for me to contest the deputy president’s post and remain in the Cabinet,” said Rafizi, as quoted by news outlet Free Malaysia Today. Rafizi is likely to face off against Anwar’s daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, as well Saifuddin for PKR’s Number Two post during the party’s leadership congress slated to be held on May 24. Nomination begins on Thursday (May 8) at 12am and ends on Friday at 11.59pm. Anwar is widely expected to retain his position unchallenged at the party congress but it will be the final term for the 77-year-old because the party’s constitution caps the tenure of its president at two consecutive terms. The deputy president post is thus seen as the pathway for his eventual successor. WAVE OF SUPPORT FOR NURUL IZZAH In recent days, several party leaders have thrown their weight behind Nurul Izzah, who is currently one of PKR’s four vice-presidents. On Wednesday, she said she would make the “best decision” on contesting in PKR’s central leadership elections but did not confirm whether she would mount a challenge against Rafizi. “PKR is at a crucial juncture. Therefore, every decision must consider not only the need to unite the party and strengthen the bonds among fellow comrades, but also to bring meaningful change to ensure that the party remains relevant,” she said in a Facebook post, as quoted by Free Malaysia Today. “I will make the best decision possible to balance between consensus, friendship, change and meaningful reforms for all members,” she added. Besides Rafizi, other possible contenders for PKR’s deputy presidency include Saifuddin and Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari, CNA previously reported. While Saifuddin has remained tight-lipped on whether he will be contesting, Amirudin, in a joint statement issued on behalf of the Selangor PKR division, has declared support for Nurul Izzah to contest the deputy presidency. Amirudin, who is Selangor’s PKR chairman, said the party needed a deputy president who was not tied to government administration and could focus on strengthening unity while preparing the party for the next general election. “Nurul Izzah is no stranger to the party ... She built her name not on her family lineage but on the strength of her principles and courage to stand for truth,” Amirudin said in the statement on Tuesday as quoted by news agency Bernama. “She has proven her credibility in two terms as a Member of Parliament, as the party’s vice-president and as a committed policy thinker. She is recognised both domestically and internationally but most importantly, party members know who she is and what she has sacrificed for PKR,” he added. CONCERNS OF NEPOTISM Known as “Reformasi Princess” for her role in campaigning for her father’s release from prison 20 years ago, Nurul Izzah was a two-term Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh in Penang before she lost her parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election. She was appointed as one of PKR’s vice-presidents the same year after opting not to contest the central leadership elections that year. Chief of PKR’s women wing, Fadhlina Sidek, has also called for Nurul Izzah, 44, to contest the deputy presidency, dismissing concerns of nepotism with Anwar set to continue as PKR’s president. “This is not a matter of whose daughter she is, neither is it a matter of whether a male or female (should be PKR deputy president). It’s also not a matter of factions ... This is about the continuity of the party, which needs rejuvenation in terms of its leadership,” Fadhlina said on Wednesday. Fadhlina, who is also education minister, said Nurul Izzah had been present at every phase of PKR’s journey from the start of the “reformasi” movement and the party’s founding to the formation of the ruling unity government, of which PKR is a linchpin component. Other party and divisional leaders who have voiced support for Nurul Izzah include youth wing chief Adam Adli and Shamsul Iskandar Akin, the senior political secretary to Anwar. Shamsul, who is PKR division chief for Hang Tuah Jaya in Melaka, said Nurul Izzah’s candidacy is “not merely about personality or heritage”, but about the party’s future as a progressive political party. His statement of support for her was signed by five other division chiefs from Melaka. PKR’s Kedah, Johor and Perak divisions have also backed Nurul Izzah’s candidacy. A party source had told Free Malaysia Today that more PKR leaders are expected to do so. In the 2022 party polls, Rafizi defeated Saifuddin for the deputy presidency with a landslide majority of 16,668 votes, according to the New Straits Times. PKR operatives close to Anwar told CNA previously that sentiment has turned negative in recent years towards Rafizi. Detractors say he has not shown himself to be a team player or taken on the duties of building the party infrastructure, while supporters of Rafizi argue he has been sidelined by Anwar. In recent days, Anwar has said that Rafizi’s leave of absence from Cabinet should not be made into an issue. He confirmed Rafizi’s leave was only for a few days and not until the end of the month, as had been reported.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Nominations for the 2025 Goh Chok Tong Enable Awards (GCTEA) have opened, with the closing date for submissions on Jun 25, a joint press release by Mediacorp and disability agency SG Enable said on Wednesday (May 7). Now in its seventh year, the awards are a key initiative of the Goh Chok Tong Enable Fund, which is a community fund is administered by SG Enable and supported by Mediacorp. It gives opportunities to persons with disabilities to actively contribute to society and lead socially integrated lives by providing financial aid, supporting aspirations and conferring awards. The awards comprise two categories: The GCTEA (Achievement) celebrates individuals with disabilities who have made significant achievements in their respective fields and inspire others. Up to three individuals will be awarded S$10,000 (US$7,700) each. Nominating organisations which are Institutions of Public Character or government educational institutions will each receive S$5,000 if their nominee is selected as a winner of this award category. This is in recognition of their \"contributing role in the success journeys of persons with disabilities\", said Mediacorp and SG Enable. The GCTEA (Promise) encourages individuals with disabilities who have shown promise to pursue greater heights in their areas of talent and willingness to serve the community. Up to 10 individuals will each receive S$5,000. Nominees for both categories must be individuals with disabilities, said Mediacorp and SG Enable. This refers to physical disabilities, sensory disabilities such as visual impairment and hearing loss, intellectual disabilities or autism. They must also be Singapore citizens or permanent residents, and aged 18 years and older for the GCTEA (Achievement) awards, or aged 12 years and older for the GCTEA (Promise) awards. There have been 84 awardees across the past six editions. Thirteen individuals with disabilities were honoured last year . Mr Michael Ngu, chairman of the GCTEA evaluation panel and SG Enable board member, said: \"Since its inception in 2019, the GCTEA has honoured persons with disabilities who have overcome challenges and made remarkable achievements - much like how Singapore has stood resilient and defied the odds in its 60 years since independence.\" More information about the awards, eligibility, nomination and evaluation processes can be found on the Goh Chok Tong Enable Fund website. This year’s winners will be announced in November.",

      • "content": "Trump's cryptic announcement tease fuels online speculation By MELISSA KOENIG FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 06:00 EDT, 7 May 2025 | Updated: 06:00 EDT, 7 May 2025 e-mail Advertisement The internet was sent into a frenzy on Tuesday night, after President Donald Trump teased he would be making an 'earth-shattering' announcement in the coming days. Many online were left speculating on what the president may have up his sleeve after making the mysterious statement inside the Oval Office as he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 'We have a very big announcement to make,' he declared. 'It's not about trade, it's about something else, but it's going to be a truly earth-shattering and positive development for this country and for the people of this country,' Trump teased. 'And that will take place some time within the next few days.' It now remains unclear what Trump may be planning to announce, with sources close to the administration even telling the New York Post they weren't even certain about what the president was talking about. But many online shared their own theories, with one X user writing: 'Trump says an \"earth shattering\" announcement is coming and it's not about trade. So... aliens? 'Or just another out-of-this world lie to distract from court dates?' she asked, apparently referring to the president's criminal cases. 'Either way, beam me outta here,' she concluded. Another X user invited others to vote on whether the announcement will be the elimination of the federal income tax or just a 'new memecoin.' (As of midnight on the East Coast 'new memecoin' was winning 51.5 percent to 48.5 percent). A fourth also suggested the announcement will have something to do with Trump's upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. 'The \"earth shattering\" announcement will be the addition of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to the Abraham Accords, which would be one of the greatest diplomatic achievements of our lifetimes,' he said of the deal Trump struck in his first term to get the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to recognize Israel. Experts DailyMail.com spoke to have also floated that Trump's big announcement was likely how much the Saudis would invest in the U.S. Others, though, were more pragmatic - with one user simply saying, 'Hopefully the markets will react well to this' after the president's previous announcement about global tariffs sent the world's stock markets plummeting. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported Tuesday night that Trump is planning to rename the Persian Gulf - to the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia. The body of water is situated between Iran and all three Arab nations that Trump will visit in his four-day trip to the region departing from the White House Monday. While the name 'Persian Gulf' has been around since the 16th century, in modern times many countries in the Middle East have started calling it the Gulf of Arabia or the Arabian Gulf. They've done so to show their clout over Iran. The US military was also already using Arabian Gulf in statements and photos. This has irritated Iran, formerly called Persia, whose government threatened to sue Google in 2012 over the company's decision not to name the body of water on all of its maps. • "content": "Bodo/Glimt may be behind 3-1 on aggregate against Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur after the first leg of their Europa League semi-final in London, but the Norwegians have some pedigree against more illustrious foes. And a late goal by midfielder Ulrik Saltnes gave the club from inside the Arctic Circle a lifeline ahead of the home leg. “It was more of a relief that we were able to lift ourselves a little and get into the game,” Saltnes told Reuters. “We are still huge underdogs, but at least now it will be a battle!” Bodo/Glimt are used to battling in Europe and have taken some notable scalps this season. In the quarter-finals, they looked dead and buried in extra time of the second leg against Lazio in Rome, only for Andreas Helmersen to score an unlikely equaliser and force a penalty shootout, which they won. It is the latest in a series of never-say-die performances in Europe that stems from a club ethos that favours process over results, allowing them to keep cool even when under the cosh. Saltnes has experienced all the highs and lows of European football in this campaign, scoring twice in the first leg at home to Lazio but then being taken off after 57 minutes in Rome as that two-goal cushion was erased, forcing extra time. The 32-year-old wondered aloud after the first leg if two chances he spurned in the second half might come back to haunt him, but as he sat and watched the penalty drama unfold, he said he could barely remember the misses. 'NOTHING TO LOSE' “No, not really – it was so emotional and exciting to watch that I couldn't think about anything else but the game and supporting the lads,” he said. Fortunately his teammates, and in particular goalkeeper Nikita Haikin, came to the rescue, winning the shootout in the cauldron of Rome’s Olympic stadium to put them one game away from a European final – if they can turn the two-goal deficit against Spurs around at home. “I think they will play very similarly to the last game. We have absolutely nothing to lose, and we just have to attack as best we can,” Saltnes explained. “We have to keep a cool head – it's no use thinking we're going to win the game in 10 minutes. A lot can happen, and we just have to focus on ourselves, even though we know it's going to be an incredibly big challenge.” Saltnes has spoken about how he considered quitting the game before Bodo began riding the crest of a wave that has seen them win four league titles since 2020. A major catalyst came when performance coach Bjorn Mannsverk - a former Norwegian air force fighter pilot with no football background - was brought in, and together with coach Kjetil Knutsen, instilled a focus away from winning towards simply performing at their best in every moment. Come Thursday, the town of Bodo will again troop down to the Aspmyra stadium, a ten-minute walk from the local airport, to welcome the team onto the field as fireworks are shot into the sky and AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” blasts from the speakers. Journalists visiting the tiny ground, which holds just over 8,000 spectators, will report to the world from a press room behind one of the goals that is located above a supermarket and used as a classroom during the day, complete with children’s drawings hanging on the walls. With the final set to take place in Bilbao on May 21, Thursday’s second leg will be the last game of the current season at Aspmyra. “Of course, making the final would be great, but I don't think it would change much,\" Saltnes said. \"The experiences you have along the way are much more important than where you end up, I think.”",

      • "content": "South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun, popular for his performances in the K-dramas ‘Queen of Tears’ and ‘It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,’ is now at the center of a shocking scandal. Allegations have surfaced that he was in a secret relationship with the late actress Kim Sae-ron, while she was a minor. Kim Soo-hyun’s agency GOLD MEDALIST has denied the allegations calling them false and baseless and also filed a lawsuit against Sae-ron’s family. In the latest development, the legal representative of Sae-ron’s family and Garo Sero Research Institute, the YouTube channel that first exposed the scandal, has now released an alleged audio recording of Sae-ron at a press conference held in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on Wednesday, May 7. In the recording reportedly dated January 10, 2025, Sae-ron can be heard admitting to dating Kim Soo-hyun in middle school, and also establishing a physical relationship with the actor when she was a minor. \"I had sex with #KimSoohyun for the first time during the winter vacation in the second year of middle school,\" said South Korean actress #KimSaeron in a recording revealed by her family today. #SouthKorea pic.twitter.com/tPYG7FHwoU — Shanghai Daily (@shanghaidaily) May 7, 2025 Kim Sae-ron allegedly says she was in 8th grade when she “first did it” with him. The ‘Bloodhounds’ actress can also be heard contemplating if she was “being taken advantage of” by Soo-hyun. “There aren’t many people who know that we dated when I was in middle school, but they all had the same reaction. They saw me as the crazy one and asked why I was letting him get away with it,” allegedly said Kim Sae-ron, as per Koreaboo. But that’s not all, Kim Sae-ron’s alleged audio also suggests that Kim Soo-hyun slept with other idols and sent photos of them to her. “But what makes him psycho is that he would show me photos taken while having sex with someone else. But what’s even crazier is that he saved the idol he slept with as ‘Seaweed’ in his contacts because she smelled like seaweed. If I had the right circumstances, I would’ve exposed everything already,” she reportedly said. So Soohyun had sex with Kim Saeron when she was in 8th grade. IMAGINE. EIGHT GRADE!!!!! This is so beyond disgusting! Oh my God. Even anybody's still choosing to defend him after watching this, let me tell you, you don't deserve to have children. https://t.co/oYQ954OjZZ — anggie (@angee_wonii) May 7, 2025 It is important to note that the accounts of the audio hadn’t been legally verified yet.",

Japanese companies have faced campaigns from investors anticipating higher shareholder returns once long-awaited corporate governance changes are implemented. Wacom's branded products business holds 39 per cent of the global market share in display and pen tablets but has been losing ground to competitors, and the segment has made a loss over multiple years, the investment fund said in a presentation. Its board also lacks a representative with capital markets experience that could better protect shareholder interests, Kaz Sakai, the investment fund's head of Japan research said in an interview. Wacom did not respond to a request for comment outside of business hours. Asset Value Investors first invested in Wacom in 2021, and holds 10 per cent of total voting rights, it said, making it the company's largest shareholder. It considers itself an \"engagement investor\", pressing for dialogue with management and board members, rather than taking on a more activist role. \"We believe these measures will contribute to sustainably protecting the common interests of shareholders,\" Sakai said. Last month, it launched a campaign against Japanese pharmaceuticals company Rohto to encourage it to focus on its core businesses and engage with shareholders more frequently.",

      • "content": "Cardinals from more than 70 nations gather at the Vatican to choose a new Catholic leader after the death of Pope Francis. Vatican City – For days, the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church have been slipping beyond the Vatican’s walls, gathering for discreet dinners at old trattorias and secretive sessions at private living rooms across Rome. Tasked with electing the new leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, the red-hatted princes of the Church have been engaged in feverish discussions as they seek to identify the ideal successor to Pope Francis, who died last month. Recommended Stories At 4:30pm (14:30 GMT) on Wednesday, the 133 cardinals aged less than 80 will march in a solemn procession to the sound of prayers and enter the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. Referring to this year’s election process, Marco Politi, a Vatican expert and author of the book Pope Francis Among the Wolves, said, “There is a new element. “The south of the world is making its way and asking to be listened to and wants to have its say – it is not enough that the problems are outlined from the centre or Northern Hemisphere.” This conclave will feature the diverse perspectives of cardinals from more than 70 countries. This scope is seen as a legacy of Pope Francis, who appointed 80 percent of those eligible to vote in an effort to expand the Church’s global reach. Most of the cardinals had never met before this week. Their task is not expected to be easy. The key issue, experts say, has been trying to determine whether to proceed on the path of Francis, a pontiff who pushed boundaries but did not break them. “They are looking for a mender, a mediator and also a charismatic pastor who knows how to be close to the people,” said Politi. A range of themes has emerged from the pre-conclave discussions. Topping the agenda was the need to find a unifying figure to repair relations in a deeply divided Church, as well as the standing of the institution in global politics. Among the tensions, critical clergymen reject a 2018 deal between the Holy See and China that gave Beijing a say in the appointment of Catholic bishops there, since Catholics were repressed by the Communist Party. At pre-conclave meetings, some urged caution in opening up to other religions – a trademark of Pope Francis’s papacy – fearing the Catholic identity could be diluted. There is also a vocational crisis, as fewer faithful are entering the priesthood. The cardinals also spoke about the church’s sexual abuse and financial scandals, defined by a spokesman for the Vatican as a “wound” to keep “open” as a reminder of what has been done. Others touched on the contentious issue of opening up the Church to laymen and women – a process started by Francis. The Vatican on Tuesday provided insight into the qualities the cardinals are seeking in the contenders, known as papabile. “A figure who must be present, close, capable of being a bridge and a guide, of favouring access to communion for a disoriented humanity marked by the crisis of the world order; a shepherd close to the real life of the people,” its bulletin read. The Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, is one of the most recurrent names favoured by bookmakers. Regarded as a skilled diplomat who understands the nuances of diplomacy, the Italian is seen by many as a moderate who may attract votes from both the most conservative and liberal camps. Last week, the 70-year-old was the target of reports circulating in right-wing United States Catholic social media accounts, claiming that he had suffered a health scare and needed medications. This was quickly refuted by the Vatican. Another possible papabile is Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. Hailing from a continent with the world’s most Catholics, the Filipino is popularly referred to as the “Asian Francis” due to their pastoral approach. The 67-year-old was also the target of US and Italian conservative Catholic social media accounts that accused him of heresy after a video emerged showing him singing John Lennon’s Imagine six years ago – the popular song’s lyrics feature lines such as “imagine there is no heaven ... no religion.” Another Italian who is often mentioned is Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. The 60-year-old is the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, whose experience in the Middle East, observers say, could prove useful in running an institution known for its infighting. Others, however, believe he is too young for the job. Most conservative cardinals might rally behind Cardinal Peter Erdo, the archbishop of Budapest. The 72-year-old has spoken out against allowing divorced Catholics to receive communion and has previously adopted an anti-migrant stance. Yet naming frontrunners has often proven pointless. As a famous Roman popular saying goes: “He who enters the conclave as pope, leaves it as a cardinal” – a hint at how unpredictable conclaves are. Habemus papam? Speculation, gossip and fake news will not enter the majestic Sistine Chapel on Wednesday. By then, the windows of the chapel will have been obscured, cardinals’ phones confiscated and any contact with the outside world forbidden. The new pontiff will need at least 89 votes to be elected. If a two-thirds majority is not reached, cardinals will gather again for four rounds of votes each day. There is no limit to how long they can extend the voting process, but the age of the cardinals and past experiences in recent history suggest it would not run for more than five days. The world’s eyes will be pointed at the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. The crowd in St Peter’s Square will see black smoke if a pope has not been elected and white smoke if he has. Should that be the case, one of the cardinals will appear from the balcony of the basilica and announce: “Habemus papam!” (the Latin words for “We have a pope”) before letting the new pope reveal himself to the faithful.",

      • "description": "Despite their long history of conflict, both India and Pakistan are wary of being pulled into full-scale hostilities and off-ramps are still available, says NUS Institute of South Asian Studies’ Iqbal Singh Sevea.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: In the early hours of Wednesday (May 7), India carried out missile strikes on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir in response to a terror attack on Apr 22 in which 26 tourists were assassinated in the Indian hill station of Pahalgam in Kashmir. Pakistan has promised a robust response to this “act of war”, putting the two nuclear powers on the brink of war. Heavy cross-border firing has already broken out and civilian deaths have been reported on both sides but not confirmed. New Delhi has asserted that the strikes are part of an anti-terror operation and stressed that it did not target military and civilian installations. India has long accused Pakistan of training and supporting Kashmiri militants fighting for the secession. Although miscalculations and tit-for-tat responses could escalate tensions between the two neighbours with a long history of violent conflict, both are wary of being pulled into full-scale hostilities. INDIA’S LONGER-TERM STRATEGY This is clear from India's language in its official statements on the strikes. It described them as “focused, measured and non-escalatory” actions solely targeting “terrorist infrastructure” linked to the militant organisations, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed . Instead of pursuing a large-scale military entanglement, India has adopted a multi-pronged and longer-term strategy through which it aims to exert pressure on Pakistan. The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and the weaponisation of water is one such signal. India has suspended the 1960 treaty, which governs how the waters of rivers that run through India and Pakistan are shared. It is important to note that India does not have the required dam infrastructure to shut off the flow of water to Pakistan immediately, but it has announced that it will develop storage and distribution infrastructure to do so. PAKISTAN MUST FIND ITS CALIBRATED RESPONSE There is no question that Pakistan will respond to India’s strikes with some form of military action. It will, however, need to calibrate this in a manner that does not escalate tensions beyond a point. Such rhetoric and action should, however, be seen as attempts to raise the ante to a point that other countries pressure India to taper its response and re-evaluate its position on the sharing of river waters. It is also worth noting that tensions with India and the strikes have led to a burgeoning of support for the military across Pakistan. The military, which plays a major role in the politics of the country, had been confronted by mass protests and opposition over the past few years for meddling in the political process. The current crisis has abated these protests. Thus, while the military will need to display its ability to respond to attacks, it will be conscious of not jeopardising its newfound support by escalating military tensions beyond a point that the public can bear. ESCALATION IS NOT THE ONLY OUTCOME Despite current tensions, there are off-ramps for India and Pakistan to de-escalate. India can claim that its current strikes have shown its determination to fight terrorism. Pakistan could retaliate by air strikes of its own on non-military targets in India and launch large-scale action against militants in the restive province of Balochistan, which it accuses India of supporting. But one important variable that currently remains unclear is the number and nature of casualties sustained by the Indian strikes and cross-border firing. This will determine the domestic demands for action and whether India and Pakistan can pacify them. Iqbal Singh Sevea is Associate Professor and Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore.",

      • "content": "Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calls an emergency national security meeting ahead of a national address. India launches strikes on Pakistan; Islamabad calls it ‘act of war’ Pakistan has accused India of committing a “blatant act of war” and promised retaliation after New Delhi launched deadly missile strikes along their contested border in disputed Kashmir, in the worst eruption of violence between the nuclear-armed neighbours in two decades. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called an emergency national security meeting on Wednesday ahead of a national address, as his Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif declared that Islamabad “won’t take long to settle the score” and said that military operations were already under way. Recommended Stories India launched a massive military bombardment overnight dubbed “ Operation Sindoor” , striking nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, killing at least 26 people. In response, Pakistan said it struck Indian military targets and claimed to have shot down several warplanes, resulting in at least 10 deaths. Residents of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said they fled their homes and ran into surrounding hills as India launched air attacks on part of the city. “The whole house moved. Everyone got scared, we all evacuated, took our kids and went up [into the hills],” Muhammad Shair Mir, 46, told Reuters news agency. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Wednesday that New Delhi carried out the strikes after its intelligence monitoring showed that “further attacks against India were impending”. “Therefore, it was necessary to take preemptive and precautionary strikes,” he said during a joint news conference with top Indian military commanders. The military added that it targeted “terrorist camps” that served as recruitment centres, launchpads, and indoctrination centres, and sites housing weapons and training facilities. “Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution,” it added. The strikes followed an attack on tourists in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir in March, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-backed armed groups. In New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the latest deadly exchange, India-based journalist Neha Poonia told Al Jazeera. Poonia also reported that Modi had cancelled his trip to Europe after the fighting broke out. Modi has yet to respond to allegations by Pakistan that he carried out the attacks to “shore up” domestic support. While India insisted that the attacks only targeted armed groups, Pakistan claimed that many of those who were killed and wounded were civilians, including four children. In Punjab, the Pakistani military also claimed that Indian missiles hit a mosque in the city of Bahawalpur, killing a child and wounding two other people. Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said that in response to the Indian strikes, Pakistan’s air force has launched retaliatory operations and claimed to have downed Indian military aircraft, including a Sukhoi and MiG jets. “The Pakistani air force said that its jet fighters have not crossed into Indian airspace during the operation, and they said that all its aircraft have returned to base unharmed.” There was no immediate response from the Indian military about the strikes , Hyder said. Meanwhile, our correspondent said that funeral rites are set to begin for those killed in the Indian attacks, which targeted cities Muzaffarabad and Kotli, both in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Earlier, Hyder also reported that heavy shelling had resumed on the Line of Control that separates Pakistan-administered Kashmir from Indian-administered Kashmir. “The escalation is something that everyone is watching to see ... what Pakistan’s next reaction would be,” he said. In an interview with Al Jazeera, former Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar blamed India for the “unprovoked and unsubstantiated” attack against her country, adding that New Delhi is “playing with fire”. Khar said that Islamabad has been “warning the world” about India’s “lack of adherence to international law” regarding the situation in Kashmir. “Now it has upped the ante of being the aggressor and operating with impunity,” she said. Diplomats have piled pressure on leaders of both countries to step back. “The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan,” the spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement. United States President Donald Trump said the clashes were “a shame”. “I just hope it ends very quickly,” Trump said at the White House. China, which shares land borders with both countries and is a close ally of Pakistan, said it expressed “regret over India’s military action this morning” and said it was “concerned about the current developments”. The United Kingdom is ready to support both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions, Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said on Wednesday.",

      • "description": "It stands up to the Trump administration's sweeping demands, but bows to those of its own billionaire donors.",
      • "content": "It stands up to the Trump administration, but bows to its own billionaire donors. At Harvard, Palestine remains unspeakable. Lara Jirmanus Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School My sister was standing with a few other students under the dim glow of Harvard Yard’s old lampposts, casually smoking and chatting. “Oh, you’re Palestinian?” one of them asked as he leaned in to light his cigarette from hers. “My cousin is in the IDF [Israeli army].” Then he placed the cigarette in his mouth backwards, the lit end burning between his teeth. “This is how my cousin smoked while shooting Palestinians at the border,” he said. “So those idiots couldn’t see the flame.” That evening, shaken, my sister called our parents and later reported the incident to her resident tutor. She searched for a way to file a formal complaint but found none. Arabs weren’t considered a “protected class”. In the charged political climate of late 2001, hate speech like this wasn’t just tolerated – it was invisible. More than two decades later, little has changed. A report released in April 2025 by the Harvard Presidential Task Force on Combating Anti-Muslim, Anti-Arab, and Anti-Palestinian Bias described a “deep-seated sense of fear” among Muslim and Arab students, faculty and staff. The campus climate, the report noted, was marked by “uncertainty, abandonment, threat, and isolation”. Nearly half of Muslim students surveyed said they felt physically unsafe at Harvard while an overwhelming 92 percent of all Muslim students, faculty and staff revealed that they feared professional or academic consequences for expressing their personal or political views. Harvard has fashioned itself as a free-speech warrior on the national stage for refusing to negotiate with the Trump administration on its sweeping demands for the university to drop its diversity, equity and inclusion measures and punish student protesters. However, inside Harvard’s campus walls, we have seen President Alan Garber oversee a systematic erasure of teaching, research and scholarship about Palestine, at a time when more than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed, and hundreds of thousands more have been forcefully displaced and are facing starvation under a relentless Israeli siege. Long before Harvard evaded a hostile takeover from our billionaire president, it capitulated to the demands of its billionaire donors in matters of student discipline, campus speech and academic freedom. To please its right-wing donors, Harvard adopted a one-sided conceptualisation of campus safety, in which speaking up against Israeli state violence towards Palestinians is considered threatening. As a result, university administrators rush to address anti-Semitism on campus, as they should, but they also censor and eliminate speech and scholarship which is critical of Israel in the name of fighting antisemitism. Meanwhile, anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab racism, and Islamophobia are less than an afterthought. University administrators remain silent as students, faculty and staff experience doxxing, harassment and death threats for speaking up about Palestinian human rights. They have shared international students’ information with the Department of Homeland Security, as students on nearby campuses have been abducted by masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, detained and deported for objecting to Israel’s international law violations. Beyond turning a blind eye to intimidation and abuse, the university’s leaders also routinely take action to erase Palestinian speech, scholarship, advocacy and views. Last year, the Harvard Corporation, the university’s unelected governing body, overruled the faculty and barred 13 seniors from graduating for protesting the genocide in Gaza, breaking with decades of disciplinary precedent. The university has banned the only undergraduate Palestine advocacy group twice, through inconsistent enforcement of the university’s ambiguous and “ever-evolving” event co-sponsorship policy, which, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) warned, “raise[s] the specter of viewpoint discrimination”. In a little-publicised Title VI settlement from January, the US Department of Education found that Harvard failed to meaningfully investigate or sufficiently respond to 125 cases of discrimination and harassment reported through its anonymous reporting hotline, particularly those “based on Palestinian, Arab, and/or Muslim shared ancestry”. Although President Garber has said Harvard should condemn “hateful speech” under the institutional voice policy, this did not apply to the gruesome “jokes” former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made about giving students exploding pagers for interrupting his speech at Harvard Business School in March 2025. The handful of teaching and research programs where faculty study Palestine at Harvard have been censored, eliminated, or are under threat of elimination. In a matter of months, Harvard cancelled a panel featuring Palestinian children from Gaza at Harvard Medical School, ended its only partnership with a Palestinian university, and eliminated the Religion and Public Life program at the Harvard Divinity School, which addressed Israel/Palestine as a case study. Harvard also dismissed the leadership of the Center for Middle East Studies, as an “offering of sorts to its critics”, according to The New York Times. The elimination of Harvard programmes about Palestine is especially chilling given that all of Gaza’s universities have been demolished, more than 80 percent of its schools have been destroyed or damaged, and professors, teachers and students in Gaza have been systematically attacked. The UN calls this “scholasticide” – the systemic obliteration of education through the destruction of educational infrastructure and arrest, detention, or killing of students, staff, and teachers. The erasure and elimination of knowledge production by Palestinians and about Palestine at Harvard and other universities chills speech in defence of Palestinian human rights in the US, and thus materially affects the safety of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. At this time last year, campuses across the US experienced an unprecedented mobilisation in support of Palestinian freedom, which put a spotlight on the overwhelming public opposition to Israel’s assault on Gaza. Eventually, the opposition to Israel’s conduct against Palestinians became so vocal that then-President Joe Biden – an ardent supporter of Israel – threatened an arms embargo against Israel if the humanitarian situation in Gaza did not improve. Today, after Harvard and other universities suppressed protests against Israel’s total war on Gaza, Palestinian suffering and death are met with growing silence in the US. As public and media attention drifts away from Gaza, the pressure on American leaders to intervene – or even acknowledge the scale of the crisis – has all but disappeared. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recently declared that “the humanitarian situation in Gaza is now likely the worst it has been in the 18 months since the outbreak of hostilities.” Jonathan Whittall, the local head of OCHA, stressed that what’s unfolding in Gaza no longer resembles conventional warfare. “People in Gaza are telling me they feel like it’s the deliberate dismantling of Palestinian life in plain sight,” he said. Malnutrition is surging as Israel has sealed the borders to food, medicine, and all humanitarian aid for over two months. Meanwhile, scenes that should shock the world – children’s bodies thrown into the air by explosions, families burned alive – have become what Whittall called “everyday atrocities”. Both the Trump administration and Harvard’s billionaire donors clearly understand the important role universities play in shaping US society and public opinion. As Harvard leaders proclaim their commitment to “viewpoint diversity”, we can rest assured that we will hear more from speakers like Jared Kushner, who spoke at the Harvard Kennedy School last year about his plan to “finish the job” and develop Gaza’s “valuable waterfront property”, instead of Palestinian child amputees whose plight might make us feel uncomfortable or complicit. It is heartening that hundreds of university presidents signed a letter opposing President Trump’s attempted takeover of US higher education. But for decades, their institutions have eagerly bent to the will of billionaire donors. In just the past year and a half, these donors have shaped everything from campus speech to student discipline – even course syllabi. In this corrupt bargain, the concept of “campus safety” has been weaponised to suppress speech on what the UN and other human rights organisations have called genocide. The language of anti-discrimination has been twisted to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs – Harvard’s own DEI office now quietly renamed the “Office of Community and Campus Life”. This moment cannot be separated from a broader history. It echoes the 1971 Lewis Powell memo, which outlined how corporations could infiltrate US institutions – especially universities – to align them with corporate interests. Today, the “Palestine exception” has become a key entry point for an ideological capture of higher education, decades in the making. For Harvard and its peers to resist federal overreach while yielding to oligarchic donors is not resistance at all – it’s surrender. If we don’t fight both forces together, we may soon be unable to fight at all. If, as President Garber wrote, “the fearless and unfettered pursuit of truth liberates humanity,” then he – and all of us – must demand that liberation without exceptions, caveats, or fear. For every single one of us. The views expressed in this article are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera’s editorial stance.",

      • "content": "Two weeks after the in Indian-administered Kashmir that claimed 26 lives, India and Pakistan appear to be on . Now a further 26 people in Pakistan are reported to have been killed in Indian missile strikes against what the government called “terrorist infrastructure.” Pakistan claims it has shot down five Indian air force jets and a drone in retaliation for what it describes as this “act of war.” The countries have closed their borders and shut down their airspace to each other and have suspended all trade. With both countries possessing nuclear weapons, the rising tension makes managing escalation particularly urgent. A key factor in the de-escalation of past crises has been as a third-party crisis manager. While the recent from the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, shows US concerns over the gathering crisis, there are considerable uncertainties surrounding in de-escalation. US president Donald Trump remarked that he is “sure they’ll figure it out one way or the other ... There’s great tension between Pakistan and India, but there always has been”, which appears to put the onus of de-escalation on New Delhi and Islamabad. What is needed now is between the two nations. Instead, both sides appear ready to ratchet up tensions further, with inflammatory rhetoric, enhanced military preparedness and which separates the two countries in Kashmir. The need to give reassurance to each party through empathetic communication is particularly important in the India-Pakistan context. First, the risks of escalation between India and Pakistan are greater than they were in 2019 after the , which killed 40 Indian troops at Pulwama near to Kashmir’s main town of Srinagar. India identified the Pakistani state as responsible for the attack and responded with against what it claimed was a JeM training camp at Balakot in north-western Pakistan. The absence of a trusted channel of communication brought both countries closer than ever to a . Mike Pompeo, then secretary of state in the first Trump administration, claimed that both sides had readied their nuclear deterrents. Whatever the veracity of Pompeo’s claims, it’s clear that mutual restraint is critical to avoiding miscalculations. But Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s delegation of greater to the Indian military after the Pahalgam attack has raised concerns that India’s use of force could be more extensive than in 2019. Modi has vowed to pursue and punish the terrorists and their abetters “to the ends of the Earth”, a pledge that raises domestic political costs for him and his government if there is no military follow-through. Lessons from the Cuban missile crisis One important lesson from past nuclear standoffs – especially the Cuban missile crisis – is that leaders of adversarial nuclear states can sometimes forge empathetic channels of communication that help pull their countries back from the brink. There was no established hotline in October 1962. But US President John F Kennedy and his Soviet counterpart, Nikita Khrushchev, exchanged in which they acknowledged and expressed their shared vulnerability to nuclear war. There was no talk of nuclear jingoism or the manipulation of nuclear threats. Instead, as one of us (Nicholas) has argued in co-authored with US academic Marcus Holmes, the nuclear shadow that hung over the two leaders encouraged the development of mutual empathy and a bond of trust that were both critical to the peaceful resolution of the crisis. Kennedy and Khrushchev could have responded to the condition of mutual nuclear vulnerability with , and turned the crisis into what Thomas Schelling – one of the most prominent US nuclear strategists and an advisor to the Kennedy administration – called a But instead, they recognized that competitive manipulations of risk could only lead to mutual disaster, which enabled them to avert a potential nuclear exchange. Indian and Pakistani leaders could take their cue from this episode. A recent by the nuclear think tank Basic (co-edited by Nicholas) urged policymakers to avoid viewing crises as “zero-sum tests of will.” Instead, they should see them as opportunities for cooperation to avert catastrophe. Why an India-Pakistan hotline is vital But the absence of a trusted confidential line of communication between the leaders of India and Pakistan is a major barrier to empathetic communication. It prevents the two reaching a proper appreciation of shared vulnerabilities that is so critical to crisis de-escalation. As Basic recommended in a , the most important contribution to crisis de-escalation between the two countries would be to establish a leader-to-leader hotline. Schelling called the the “best single example” of a measure that increased confidence in mutual restraint on both sides, and virtually ruled out what he called the “anxiety to strike first.” Such a hotline between the highest levels of Indian and Pakistani diplomacy would be an important step towards preventing these crises from spinning out of control. More crucially, it could play a pivotal role in managing crises when they do occur, offering a vital channel for reassurance and de-escalation. Crucially, real-time, reliable and empathetic communication would allow each side to clarify the other’s intent, signal reassurance, correct misperceptions and demonstrate restraint. India and Pakistan should not see these mechanisms as concessions or signs of weakness, but as instruments for enhancing mutual security between two nuclear adversaries. In a nuclear age where the margin for error is vanishingly small, overconfidence and brinkmanship must give way to prudence and restraint.",

      • "description": "Roland Kupka, UNICEF's regional nutrition adviser for East Asia and the Pacific, shared the need to strengthen the financing of aid programmes.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Climate change is worsening malnutrition in Asia, with young children bearing the brunt of increasingly fragile health and food systems, said the United Nations children's agency UNICEF. Despite rapid development in the region, many children are still not getting the nutrition they need, UNICEF’s regional nutrition adviser for East Asia and the Pacific Roland Kupka told CNA on Tuesday (May 6). “Climate change is putting pressure on health systems. It is increasing the prevalence of infections, which drain children's bodies of vital nutrients,” he said at the sidelines of Ecosperity Week, an annual sustainability event hosted by Temasek. “At the same time, climate change is impairing food systems . So we see decreases in the quality (and) quantity of food, and all that makes it very clear that it's hard to talk about climate action without putting children, as well as children's nutrition, at the centre of those efforts.” ENDING CHILD HUNGER Kupka stressed that the nutrition crisis in Asia is becoming increasingly urgent, where about 19 million children are “chronically undernourished”. Malnutrition, which is an imbalance between the nutrients one’s body needs to function and the nutrients it receives, can significantly stunt children’s physical and brain development, he added. “We also see that deficiencies in vitamins and minerals are still very common, and at the same time, we see that more and more children are overweight and obese. “So I think really what we need to make sure is that children have access to the right diets, the right services and to the right practices, and that we support governments to put in place the right policies and programmes to address these forms of malnutrition.” Kupka said the financing of aid programmes is one of the biggest hurdles in tackling malnutrition. He noted that there is a need for \"mechanisms\" that can assess various financing needs and incentivise the production of certain nutritious food in settings where they are needed. UNICEF, for instance, has introduced the Child Nutrition Fund to quicken the scaling up of sustainable policies, programmes and supplies to end child undernutrition, said Kupka. “We feel that that has real promise to address malnutrition in this region, as well as in other regions.” GOVERNMENT ACTION He also called on governments to take greater measures to close Asia’s nutrition gap, noting that they are at the core of change to implement effective policies. “I think it's the duty of governments to watch out for the rights of their citizens, to put in place the policies and the programmes,” he added. “But governments cannot do it alone, and that's where I feel philanthropists can come in — they have the freedom, the speed, the agility to try out new things, new models that can then be taken over by governments later.” When asked how Asia can build better climate resilience and food security, Kupka said the region can “avoid a lot of mistakes that were made in other parts” of the world. These include failing to adapt practices to withstand increasingly extreme weather conditions “We can combine this with a quest for innovation that this region has... and really lead the way in the whole world when it comes to climate action, as well as areas such as child nutrition,” he added.",

      • "content": "NEW DELHI: India struck nine \"terrorist camps\" in Pakistan on Wednesday (May 7) that it accused of serving as indoctrination centres, training areas, and launchpads, two weeks after an attack in Indian Kashmir that the south Asian nation linked to its neighbour. As fears mount that military conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals could escalate further, Pakistan has said six locations were hit in the strikes and none were militant camps. Here is a look at the locations India \"destroyed\". MARKAZ TAIBA CAMP India says the camp, 25km from the de-facto border, was the headquarters of militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which has been linked to last month's attack. Ajmal Kasab, the sole perpetrator of the 2008 attack on Mumbai to be captured alive, was also trained at the facility. More than 160 people were killed in the attack on India's financial capital. MARKAZ SUBHAN CAMP The target deepest in Pakistan, about 100km from the border, this camp was the headquarters of Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and was used for recruiting, training, and indoctrination, India says. MEHMOONA JOYA CAMP India says attacks planned and executed from this camp, a training facility of militant group Hijbul Mujahideen 12km from the border, include a 2016 attack on an Indian air base that killed seven. GULPUR CAMP This camp was a base for LeT located 30km from the border, India says, adding that a June attack targeting pilgrims in Kashmir's Poonch region, which killed nine, was among those executed by \"terrorists\" trained at the facility. Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack, also frequented the camp for \"indoctrination and motivational speeches\". SARJAL CAMP India says the perpetrators of an attack in March that killed four police personnel in India's Jammu and Kashmir were trained and launched from the camp, 6km inside Pakistan. ABBAS CAMP This camp, located 13km from the border, was the \"nerve centre\" for training LeT suicide bombers, India says. SYEDNA BELAL CAMP India says this camp, a staging area for JeM, was used to provide weapons' and explosives' training, and survival techniques for \"terrorist activities\" in Indian Kashmir. SAWAI NALA CAMP Located about 30km from the de-facto border, the camp was a key training facility for LeT, India says. BARNALA CAMP India says this facility was used to train terrorists in weapon handling, improvised explosive device making, and jungle survival techniques.",

      • "content": "NEW DELHI: India said on Wednesday (May 7) it hit nine sites in Pakistan \"from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed\", following last month's deadly attack in Kashmir . The nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two wars since independence from colonial ruler Britain in 1947 over the mainly Muslim region that both rule in part, while claiming in full. New Delhi blamed last month's attack in a scenic Himalayan meadow on a group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamist militant outfit based in Pakistan. Pakistan, which denies any involvement in the Kashmir attack, said the Indian strikes killed 26 civilians and its forces downed five Indian fighter jets. It vowed to respond \"to this aggression at a time, place and means of our own choice\". India said seven of its targets were used by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), both Islamist groups designated \"terrorist\" organisations by the United Nations Security Council. For decades, Hindu-majority India has accused Pakistan of supporting Islamist militants in attacks on Indian interests, especially in Kashmir. Pakistan denies such support and in turn accuses India of supporting separatist rebels in Pakistan, which New Delhi denies. LASHKAR-E-TAIBA Lashkar-e-Taiba, or the \"army of the pure\", is based in Pakistan's most populous province of Punjab and has long focused on fighting Indian rule in Kashmir. The United Nations Security Council says it has conducted \"numerous terrorist operations\" against military and civilian targets since 1993, including the November 2008 attacks in India's commercial capital of Mumbai that killed 166. Hafiz Saeed, who founded LeT in around 1990, has denied any role in the attack. The UN says LeT was also implicated in attacks on Mumbai commuter trains in July 2006 and a December 2001 attack on India's parliament. Muridke, just outside Punjab's capital of Lahore, is believed to be home to the sprawling 81ha headquarters of organisations affiliated with LeT. India says it struck Muridke's Markaz Taiba, a site about 25km from the border, where the Mumbai attackers had been trained. The term \"markaz\" means \"headquarters\". Pakistan says the group has been banned and neutralised. Arrested in 2019, Saeed was convicted of numerous terrorism financing charges and is serving a 31-year jail term. Critics say the group, rebranded in the guise of a charity, maintains a strong network in the region. JAISH-E-MOHAMMAD Also based in Punjab is Jaish-e-Mohammad, or Army of the Prophet Mohammad, founded by Masood Azhar on his release from prison in India in 1999. The deal was an exchange for 155 hostages held on an Indian Airlines flight hijacked to Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar, the UN Security Council has said. Pakistan banned the group in 2002 after it, along with LeT, was blamed for the 2001 attack on India's parliament. The group had links with Al-Qaeda, founded by Osama bin Laden, and the Taliban, the UN Security Council has said. JeM is believed to be based in Pakistan's central city of Bahawalpur, also in Punjab. It has claimed responsibility for numerous suicide bombings in Kashmir, where India has battled an armed insurgency since the late 1980s, though violence has abated in recent years. India said it attacked Bahawalpur's Markaz Subhan Allah, which it called JeM's headquarters, located about 100km from the border. Despite Pakistan's 2002 ban on JeM, United States and Indian authorities say it still operates openly there. Azhar has disappeared from the public eye except for sporadic reports of his presence close to the city, where he runs a religious institution.",

      • "content": "The deadly ‘Squid Game’ is nearing its end and the teaser of the highly anticipated third and final season is officially out. We know the new installment will pick up right where the second season left off - Gi-hun leading an uprising of the players which resulted in the brutal killing of his best friend Jung-bae, at the hands of Front Man, who is posing as Player 001 aka Young-il. Gi-hun doesn’t know that the Front Man, who works as the head guard, is also a previous winner of the Squid Game. We know that the uprising has gone for a toss and the teaser proves it as the pink guards carry a coffin. But when the lid to Gi-hun’s box opens, he is revealed to be unconscious. By the time Gi-hun regains his senses, everyone is forced to play the final game, which consists of a giant gumball machine that dispenses red and blue balls. While the details remain unclear, it appears that the colour of the gumball each player draws somehow will determine their fate in the next challenge. The players are separated into red and blue designations as tension runs high, but what steals the limelight is how the teaser ends. Everything fades into black and a cry of a newborn baby can be heard in the background. • "content": "Australian driver Jack Doohan has been axed by Alpine, giving Franco Colapinto five races to impress on his F1 return. The Renault-owned Alpine Formula One team confirmed that Argentine driver Franco Colapinto would replace Jack Doohan for the next five races, starting at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The 22-year-old Doohan, son of Australian MotoGP great Mick, failed to score a point in six races this season and one at the end of 2024. Recommended Stories “We have come to the decision to put Franco in the car alongside Pierre (Gasly) for the next five races,” said executive advisor Flavio Briatore on Wednesday, who is set to take over as team principal after Ollie Oakes resigned. “We continue to support Jack at the team, as he has acted in a very professional manner in his role as a race driver so far this season. “The next five races will give us an opportunity to try something different and after this time period we will assess our options.” Alpine signed Colapinto from Williams as a reserve driver before the start of the season. He raced nine times for Williams last year as replacement for American Logan Sargeant and scored five points, with a best finish of eighth in Azerbaijan. “I want to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to drive competitively for the next five races,” the 21-year-old Colapinto said. “I have stayed sharp, and I am as ready as possible ... I will do my best to get up to speed quickly and give it my all to deliver the best possible results alongside Pierre.” Doohan said he would always be grateful to the team for giving him a shot at Formula One. “Obviously, this latest chapter is a tough one for me to take because, as a professional driver, naturally I want to be racing,” he said. “For now, I will keep my head down, keep working hard, watch with interest the next five races and keep chasing my own personal goals.”",
