      • "content": ".....Sam Ode Worried Over Late Red Flags In Health Sector, Mutes Idea For Health Trust Fund MAKURDI : Barr Sam Ode, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, who is also the State Chairman, Benue State Task Force on Primary Health Care (PHC) says he is disturbed by the red flags identified in the health sector that may hinder effective service delivery in the sector. This is even as the Benue State Coordinator, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (HPHCDA), Shola Babatunde Abdulrazaq, has said that over 6 million people in Benue are dependent on PHC services, while 90 percent of the Benue state population benefit from first care at the PHCs. Abdulrazaq disclosed this in his remarks during the Quarterly Review meeting of the Task Force on Primary Health Care (PHC) Services, previously known as Benue State Task Force on Immunisation and other PHC Services, held at the conference room of the deputy governor. The state coordinator stressed the need to ensure that health services get to the people, particularly those at the grassroot however lauded the state government for the provision of security for immunisation exercises and other areas of the health sector, which he said was instrumental to the successes recorded in the area. According to Abdulrasaq, “Benue state is facing challenges in the area of human resources. Over 7 million people in Benue state are being provided for by PHC services, with less than 2,000 health workers. And 90 percent of the people in Benue state also receive first care at the PHC level. “Some of the achievements that have been recorded by the state is because of the commitment of the state government at ensuring that the LGA chairmen provide security so that people can access all the facilities”, he said. Meanwhile, the State Deputy Governor, Barr Sam Ode insisted that something must be done urgently to ensure that the red flags and gaps in the health sector were closed so that adequate services were delivered to the people of the state. He noted that one of the ways of putting paid to some of these challenges, including the untimely remittance of counterpart funding was the establishment of a Benue Health Trust Fund, that would tackle some of these challenges. Ode said, “I believe strongly that issues of Primary Health Care services is something that should be at our finger tips. Health is a priority and without good health we can do nothing. “Our performance indicators are not looking nice. Benue is not associated with failure. I want to thank all of you and assure you that I am here at all times to do what I need to do for us to get to where we need to be. “So we need to have a Communique that will encapsulate all of the challenges that are confronting the primary health care services in the state. The essence is to take these challenges and the Communique to the State Executive Council (SEC), through the State Commissioner of Health (Dr Yanmar Ortese). If we do that and Council gives approval to our requests then it becomes a policy of government and then we can drive according to that approval. “I will also recommend that we choose a date and go for an advocacy visit to the Executive Governor. And as part of that advocacy visit we can design a dash board, frame it and hand it over to him to hang on the wall in his office and look at the reality, therefore, nobody will need to remind him of the activities for each quarter. “The red flags we are seeing on our dash board regarding Benue state, especially as it has to do with counterpart funding is very discouraging. As a state we shouldn’t be lagging behind on issues of health. The productive population of our state provides the food for this country and so the health of the population starts from the primary level and so that advocacy visit will be very important. “Some policies of government can only be approved at the level of the State Executive Council (SEC) so if we have a Health Trust Fund, we can do some things outside the regular budget. It can fund some of these counterpart engagements and meet other challenges because the normal budget has proved over time to be counterproductive. “We can escalate the advocacy visit even to corporate organisations that are operating within the territory of Benue. That’s the only way we can put the issues of primary health on the front burner”, he suggested. Decrying the lack of commitment of the local government chairmen to issues that relate to primary health care, the deputy governor observed that “It is very unfortunate that elected chairmen are not residing in their domain. Most of them are operating outside their areas. That is why they are unable to connect with the issues of primary health. “Talking about the Daily Review (of the National Immunization Plus Days), out of the 23 LGAs, only five were present, it means that 18 were unable to perform this function. There is no excuse for that so honorable commissioner, that is one of the issues we will raise when we meet at the SEC meeting this week. “Local government chairmen are the owners of this programme. They should own them, they should internalize them; it should become part of them”, he said with emphasis. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Yanmar Ortese, who appreciated government for the ongoing revitalization of 98 PHCs across LGAs in the state, appealed to government to revitalize the remaining 172 PHCs, so that they would be able to deliver effective health services to the people at that level. He explained that it would not be enough just to upgrade the centers, but also ensure that they were well staffed and equipped to meet the needs of the people. Ortese said, “At the moment the World Bank with the State are working in collaboration in revitalizing about 98 primary health care facilities so as to move them from level one primary health care to level two primary health care, with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency adding six, giving us 104 facilities. “But out of the 276 primary health care centers in Benue state, which is in every political ward, we have only 104 that are being taken of. That means we have more to be handled so it will be good for us as a state to take care of the remaining 172 to be lifted to the level two primary health care to give us the desired services. “It’s not just about the structures, his excellency. When you have these facilities and you don’t have human resources, if you don’t have the drugs and other services they will not function. Lending his voice on the need for government to ensure it always releases its counterpart, State Coordinator, World Health Organization, Dr Mohammed Abdulkareem, said, “Government should release state counterpart fund in quarterly tranches for IPDs (Immunisation Plus Days) and other counterpart. Based on that agreement, every state governor is expected to release money every quarter for IPDs. So we are hoping that the memo which is before the governor will soon be released.” Earlier, the Executive Secretary (ES), Benue State Primary Health Care Board (BSPHCB), Grace Ashi Wende, who is also the Secretary of the Task Force, in her presentation, “the journey so far” highlighted the accomplishments of the board in tackling vaccine-preventable diseases through collaboration with development partners and support. She observed that “despite various interventions, Benue state continues to struggle with low service delivery coverage due to inadequate human resources for management and a shortage of government personnel in many health facilities, which undermines accountability for misconduct. “Insecurity has emerged as a significant barrier to healthcare service delivery, further exacerbated by insufficient community participation in PHC activities.” Wende therefore advocated for the recruitment of more staff to strengthen the capacity at the PHCs and encourage community awareness initiatives to improve the utilization of health services in PHC facilities. The aims and objectives of the Task Force include among other things to discuss policies and strategies for improving primary healthcare services in the state.",

      • "content": "A chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) and campaign coordinator of Mr Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the party in Enugu State, Prince Emeka Mamah, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mamah justified his defection on Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership commitment and excellent performance in the state. Similarly, the immediate-past State Publicity Secretary of the party and LP chairmanship candidate for Igboeze North LGA, Barr Titus Odo, has also dumped party for the PDP. While receiving the two former LP members at the PDP State headquarters on Tuesday, the state PDP chairman, Dr Martin Chukwuweike, said other political parties were collapsing and already on the verge of sinking in the state. Chukwuweike stated the governor’s exemplary leadership has repositioned the party to a vantage position where it was becoming increasingly stronger, while the APC and the LP continued to plummet as a result of loss of public trust and confidence. He stated that the party would keep receiving quality defectors to its fold, revealing that more heavyweight opposition members already lined up to announce their defections to the PDP in the state. He attributed the mass defections to Governor Mbah’s governing philosophy of transparency, accountability, optimal performance and economy transformation. “The secret to this is having a normal mind to talk to people. The governor is truthful about what he is saying and again, the job being done by the governor. They said that no one will see it and say he is still in the opposition. “That is why they are all coming. We are expecting as many big wigs are still outside, but by next tomorrow, we are going to take in not less than four from the national assembly,” he concluded. In his remark, Mamah said Governor Mbah had convinced him and thousands of his supporters to return to the PDP following the performances of the administration which he noted were a clear departure from the disappointing past history in the state. “The present governor – Peter Mbah – has shown that governance is not supposed to be what it used to be in the past. He has endeared my heart so much and that is why somebody like me, the person I brought here today, and so many other people will have to join the party,” he stressed. The former Commissioner for Environment as well as Rural Development further disclosed that more political gladiators who were once aggrieved but got pacified by Mbah’s style of governance and inclusive leadership would soon return to the party. In the next couple of days, he said, “many of our members are going to be part of this movement to PDP and in support of Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.” While describing PDP as a home, Barr Odo said he was glad to be finally home with his supporters, adding that his joining the party was influenced by the “governor’s giant strides in the state.” He explained that Barr Chijioke Edeoga also influenced his decision to join the PDP and called on the people of the state to throw their weight behind the policies of the Mbah administration to enable the government complete the ongoing laudable projects across the 260 wards. • "content": "United Capital Plc has released its first quarter ended March 31, 2025, reporting a profit before tax (PBT) of N6.7 billion, representing a 64.51% year-on-year (YoY) growth. Gross earnings more than doubled, growing by 113% YoY to N13.10 billion. Notably, this already accounts for over 30% of the Group’s full-year gross earnings in 2024, indicating a strong start to the year. Related Stories United Capital PLC reports 131.6% surge in pre-tax profit for third quarter of 2024 United Capital Plc’s bold capital restructuring: Key insights for investors CEO’s Remarks: Commenting on the performance, Group CEO, Mr. Peter Ashade, stated: “This performance reflects our unwavering dedication to creating wealth, transforming lives, and increasing shareholders’ value.” He further emphasized the role of a strong business model and purpose-driven execution in achieving these results. A deeper dive into the revenue components shows the topline growth was broad-based and anchored on three key streams: Investment income surged by 491.28% YoY to N6.408 billion Fees and commission income rose by 71.71% YoY to N4.461 billion Net trading income grew by 138.13% YoY to N1.505 billion This significant revenue growth helped cushion the impact of rising costs, ensuring a robust bottom line. Profitability and costs Despite a sharp 209.49% increase in total expenses to N6.994 billion, driven primarily by a 138% surge in other operating expenses, which made up over 72% of total costs, the Group managed to sustain profitability growth. Profit after tax climbed by 64.33% YoY to N5.89 billion, and annualized EPS improved to N1.31, up 63.75% YoY. United Capital’s total assets stood at N1.72 trillion as of March 31, 2025, representing a marginal 1% increase from the N1.70 trillion reported at the end of December 2024. The Group attributed this modest growth primarily to a 6% increase in investment securities during the period, reflecting continued expansion of its investment portfolio. On the liabilities side, the Group recorded a 6% reduction in borrowed funds alongside a notable 54% decline in other liabilities. These reductions contributed to a slight 1% decrease in total liabilities, which fell from N1.58 trillion in December 2024 to N1.57 trillion by the end of Q1 2025. In contrast, a more significant area of growth was seen in shareholders’ equity. Shareholders’ funds rose by 21% within the three-month period to N161.52 billion, driven largely by a 37% increase in the fair value reserve signaling improved valuation of financial assets and stronger capital positioning. United Capital’s share price appears to be on a recovery path. It closed at N18.25 on April 29, 2025, posting a Year-to-Date (YtD) loss of 10.5%, an improvement from the 19.21% decline recorded in Q1 2025 and the 11% full-year loss in 2024. United Capital’s Q1 2025 results demonstrate strong earnings momentum, driven by diversified income streams and effective balance sheet management. The company’s Q1 performance suggests it can scale revenues aggressively, particularly from investment income and trading activities, despite a high-cost environment. The significant growth in shareholders’ equity, coupled with a strong ROE and improving EPS, suggests that United Capital is well positioned to deliver value to investors through the rest of the year.",

According to local residents cited by Russian Telegram news channel Astra, the target of the strike was a factory manufacturing ignition devices. Governor Aleksandr Avdeyev of the Valdimir region, reported on Telegram that the fire was limited to a warehouse. He added that the blaze, now extinguished, was triggered by falling drones. Russia’s Defence Ministry said that 34 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight, including three over the Vladimir region. For over three years, Ukraine has been defending itself from Russia’s large scale invasion backed with Western support. As part of its military response, Kiev had frequently targeted sites inside Russian territory. While the Ukrainian strikes caused damage and casualties, they were minimal compared to the widespread destruction and human suffering resulting from Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Reps under the umbrella of Opposition Lawmakers Coalition in a statement, Tuesday night, Aldo commended the PDP for appointing Setonji Koshoedo as the acting national secretary of the party. Speaking through its spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the lawmakers said the latest action by the NWC has put to rest the imposition by Anyanwu despite his removal by the court. Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato federal constituency in the House of Representatives, said; “We received with excitement the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which approved the nomination of Arch. Setonji Koshoedo, as the new National Secretary of the party, thereby officially sacking Anyanwu, who had been sacked by the court. We say a big congratulations to the PDP NWC for the bold decision today to formally ratify the Sack of the impostor former National Secretary, Sen.Samuel Anyawu, and his replacement with Arc Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, the Deputy National Secretary, who is now acting as National Secretary, pending the Southeast representation of Rt Hon. Udo Okoye as Substantive National Secretary.” According to him, the move “is one of the needed urgent decisions we have been agitating for to help set the PDP on the recovery path. The NWC must also be bold enough to officially adopt the Ikimi disciplinary report and expel the traitors who have vowed to kill the party because of their greedy politics backed by Abuja plots of land bazaar.” This is as he saluted the party organ and urged them to do more to earn back the trust of Nigerians, adding “that the dark days of Anyanwu and his paymasters, notably Nyesom Wike are destroyed. Their expulsion is not negotiable.”",

      • "content": "LAGOS – Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier of Ethiopia has thrown its weight behind the Detty December celebration, which kicked-started in Lagos, Nigeria last December. Mrs. Firiehiwot Mekonnen, the newly appointed Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria, gave this assurance in a statement by the media consultant to the airline in Nigeria. The Lagos State Government, which pioneered the Detty December last year, was said to have made a significant profit from the monthly long celebration, with the tourism and entertainment sectors bringing in $71.6 million, or about N111.5 billion during the period. This revenue boost was driven by a variety of events and activities, such as music festivals, concerts, and other recreational activities held in Lagos during the period. She said: “We’ll also ensure that ‘Detty December’ is even more accessible for Nigerians.” Apart from the Detty December support, Mekonnen also promised that Ethiopian Airlines would give backing to the growing Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural events with its flight services to various destinations in the continent and beyond. According to her, Ethiopian Airlines is a connector of African trade and tourism, which is committed to driving more tourism into Nigeria from around the world and also encouraging Nigerians to explore Ethiopia and other parts of Africa. Ethiopian Airlines has consistently supported major Nigerian cultural events, including Carnival Calabar, offering discounted fares and seamless travel options. She emphasised Nigeria’s untapped tourism potential, highlighting the country’s rich culture, natural beauty, and diverse attractions that deserve global attention. Renowned for their love of travel, Nigerians have long benefited from Ethiopian Airlines’ extensive global reach. The airline has served Nigeria since 1960, operating its most modern fleet on Nigerian routes. Firiehiwot brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Most recently, she served as the head of ET Holidays, overseeing all travel and tour packages under Ethiopian Airlines. Her career also includes leadership roles in Europe and Nigeria, where she previously served as the General Manager in Lagos and as station manager for the Abuja station. Her deep expertise in travel, tourism, and airline management will further strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ presence and impact in Nigeria.",

      • "content": "The re-election bid of Governor Biodun Oyebanji and his deputy, Monsiade Afuye, got a boost as the political leaders, stakeholders, and members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ekiti North Senatorial District on Tuesday unanimously gave their endorsement. The decision was taken on Tuesday at a special meeting of the APC stakeholders held at Events Arcade, Ido Ekiti. The leaders described the Oyebanji-led administration as “a golden era” that must not be interrupted. The stakeholders assured the governor of their unwavering support, citing the administration’s achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and human capital development and the governor’s inclusive style of governance as reasons for their decision. The endorsement of the North Senatorial leaders came barely two weeks after the State Caucus of the APC passed a confidence vote on the Governor and endorsed him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office. Emphasizing the importance of continuity in sustaining the spate of development in the state, the leaders said Governor Oyebanji’s administration has laid a solid foundation for transformative progress that must not be disrupted, stressing that his second term would ensure completion of numerous impactful projects already underway, safeguard Ekiti’s future and further elevate the state to new heights of prosperity. Speaking while moving the endorsement motion, which was ratified through a thunderous voice vote, the Senator representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, who praised Governor Oyebanji for his outstanding leadership and dedication to grassroots development, said the Governor has touched every local government in the Ekiti North Senatorial District with transformative projects that have directly impacted the lives of the people. Describing the Governor as a man of his words, whose action reflects his campaign commitments, the Senator explained that the Governor has fulfilled all his electoral promises to the Ekiti people and effectively delivered on the six pillars of his administration, which include infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, and social development. “Because the Governor has done well, he has overperformed, and we have all seen him, this is the first time we are having this kind of a thing where all political parties will endorse a sitting Governor. He has delivered on all six pillars of his administration, and Ekiti North has felt his presence; we have felt his impact in all five local governments in Ekiti North, and a good turn deserves another. “So, I, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, representing the good people of Ekiti North, move a motion today, the 29th of April, 2025, for the endorsement of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji and his Deputy, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, to continue and contest for a second term from 2026 to 2030”. Earlier, the Chairman of the Ekiti North Progressive Leaders’ Forum, Chief Abejide said the Governor has ensured that the benefits of governance are felt in grassroots level hence their believe that the path to sustain growth and good governance in the state lies in re-election of Governor Oyebanji. He said, “Governor Oyebanji has governed with integrity, competence, and compassion. In just over two years in office, his administration has had tangible impacts in key areas that are the pillars of his administration”. Also speaking, the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye commended the Governor for his exceptional leadership and the tangible development his administration has brought to every corner of the state. In a resolute declaration, the Speaker vowed that no individual or group would be allowed to disrupt the pace of development in the state, stressing the importance of unity and collective efforts in sustaining the gains achieved under the Oyebanji-led administration.",

      • "content": "The recent arrest of Aisha Achimugu, a high-profile Nigerian business executive and socialite, has ignited vigorous debates across Nigeria and the global community about justice, the rule of law, and human rights protections. The circumstances surrounding her detention raise urgent questions about due process, governmental accountability, and Nigeria’s commitment to fair legal procedures—issues that resonate far beyond her personal case. According to her legal team, led by Chikaosolu Ojukwu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Achimugu voluntarily presented herself at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport following an official invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Her lawyer asserts that her visit was an act of good faith, undertaken in compliance with a court order from the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, which directed her to appear before the EFCC and the court amid ongoing investigations into allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. Despite her compliance, Achimugu was reportedly arrested at the airport before she could even proceed to the EFCC office. Her legal team describes this action as a gross deviation from the promises made in court and a violation of her legal rights. Notably, her lawyer stated that she approached authorities transparently and in accordance with legal procedures, making her arrest at such a sensitive juncture troubling and emblematic of potential procedural irregularities. At the heart of this controversy lies the principle of presumption of innocence, a cornerstone of democratic justice systems worldwide. Every individual accused of a crime is entitled to be considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. This principle not only protects individuals from wrongful detention but also maintains the integrity of the judicial process. In Achimugu’s case, her voluntary appearance and cooperation suggest a commitment to due process. Yet, her subsequent arrest, especially after her court-ordered appearance, appears to undermine this principle. It raises concerns about whether proper legal protocols are being observed and whether justice is being served or politicized. The Federal High Court’s directives for Achimugu’s appearance reflect an expectation of judicial oversight and due process. However, her arrest contradicts these mandates and raises questions about the independence of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. When arrests occur at odds with court orders, it ignites fears of extrajudicial actions and a diminishment of judicial authority. For Nigeria to uphold the rule of law, law enforcement agencies must operate within the bounds of judicial oversight, respecting court orders and individual rights. The integrity of the Nigerian judiciary depends on its capacity to serve as an impartial arbiter, immune from undue influence or harassment. Aisha Achimugu has been described by her legal defenders as a “prisoner of conscience,” asserting that her detention appears vitiated by the rule of law. The decision to detain her without transparent explanation risks casting her as a victim of political or institutional overreach—a scenario that should alarm advocates for human rights and due process. International standards, including those articulated by the United Nations, emphasize that individuals detained must be informed promptly of the reasons for their detention, have access to legal representation, and be treated with dignity. Any deviation from these standards diminishes Nigeria’s international credibility and contravenes established human rights norms. Beyond legal proceedings, Achimugu’s stature as a formidable business leader highlights her positive contributions to Nigeria’s economy. As the Group Managing Director and CEO of Felak Concept Group, she presides over a conglomerate with interests spanning engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology sectors—industries vital to Nigeria’s development. Her entrepreneurial journey exemplifies resilience and vision, serving as an inspiration, particularly for Nigerian women striving to break glass ceilings in traditionally male-dominated industries. Any unjust arrest risks undermining Nigeria’s reputation as a hub for talented and ambitious entrepreneurs. This case underscores the broader challenge Nigeria faces in maintaining a robust, transparent, and independent justice system. High-profile cases like Achimugu’s often become litmus tests for Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles, rule of law, and protection of constitutional rights. If Nigerian authorities fail to uphold fairness and due process, they risk fueling public distrust, discouraging foreign investment, and tarnishing Nigeria’s international image. Conversely, a transparent and just legal process will reinforce Nigeria’s standing as a nation committed to justice, human rights, and the rule of law. The international community, human rights advocates, and Nigerian civil society must pay close attention to this case. It demands robust oversight, transparency, and adherence to constitutional protections. Aisha Achimugu’s arrest and detention should be viewed not merely through the lens of her individual innocence or guilt, but as an indicator of Nigeria’s legal health. Justice should not be a tool for political or institutional vengeance but a process rooted in fairness and the rule of law. Achimugu’s case raises critical questions about Nigerian judicial independence and human rights protections—questions that demand answers. Ultimately, Nigeria’s progress as a nation hinges on its ability to uphold these principles consistently. For Aisha Achimugu, and others like her, the world is watching. What Nigeria demonstrates today will shape its reputation tomorrow: as a nation committed to justice, equality, and fundamental rights. ***Uwadiegwu is a commentator on social and political issues. On Wednesday, United received further good news in the return of De Ligt to training following his ankle problems. The Dutchman has been out since the start of the month after picking up the injury in the defeat by Nottingham Forest. Amorim revealed that the defender is ‘near’ to a return and he could feature against Bilboa on Thursday. Diallo is unlikely to be risked for the away leg but could make his return when United welcome Bilbao to Old Trafford on May 8. • "content": "A compelling panel discussion held in Nigeria on April 26, 2025, has reignited the conversation around reparations for colonial injustices inflicted by the United Kingdom. Hosted by Trust TV News, the televised event brought together leading voices to deliberate on what reparations truly mean for Nigeria, a nation deeply scarred by transatlantic slavery and colonial exploitation. Among the key speakers was Armsfree Ajanaku, Executive Director of the Grassroots Center for Rights and Civic Orientation, who emphasised the need for Africa to reclaim its narrative. “Reparations are not just about money,” he said. “They represent memory, justice, and dignity.” Ajanaku argued that Africa must define its own concept of justice, independent of Western frameworks. He commended the African Union for “seizing control of the reparations narrative” and rejecting externally imposed definitions of what justice should look like. For him, the wounds of colonialism are still visible in modern institutions: “The colonial legacy is not abstract. You see it in our policing systems, in our economic dependencies, in the continuing neocolonial structures.” The discussion also drew on the findings of Sudanese international law expert, Dr. al-Tayeb Abdul Jalil, who estimated that the United Kingdom owes Nigeria a staggering $3.2 trillion. This figure encompasses the full scale of damages incurred through colonization, forced labor, environmental degradation, resource theft, and developmental delays. Ambassador Haruna, a retired diplomat and former official at the ECOWAS Commission, contributed in the final segment of the discussion. He offered a stern critique of Western aid mechanisms: “Aid is not reparation. Much of what is termed ‘development assistance’ returns to donor countries through administrative costs. It doesn’t address the actual harm.” Haruna also underscored the European responsibility in Africa’s underdevelopment, asserting that modern infrastructure and sustainable growth are being supported more by countries like China than by former colonial powers. “Europe has not made meaningful infrastructural contributions in Africa. Africans must take a page from the Jewish people’s relentless pursuit of reparations,” he said. The panellists proposed a number of practical steps towards reparations, including the establishment of a Reparations Fund, comprehensive documentation of historical atrocities for future generations, and empowering civil society organisations to actively participate in the reparations process. This Nigerian debate aligns with a broader continental trend. A similar discussion took place on April 19 in Dakar, Senegal, where the topic of reparations was tackled on the program Point Actu. Experts, including Mamadi Amara Fofana, Josué Diop, and Kassoum Diabaté, called for €50 trillion in reparations from former colonial powers. The figure, first introduced during the March 2024 conference in Dakar organized by Urgences Panafricanistes, reflects the vast economic, cultural, and human toll colonization exacted on Africa. Fofana issued a compelling call to action: “France and other colonial powers must acknowledge the harm they have done—financial, human, cultural. This must be recognized officially and institutionally. Neo-colonialism must come to an end.” Both debates signal a turning point in how African countries are positioning themselves on the global stage. Nigeria, as one of the continent’s largest economies, is now equipped—politically and economically—to demand accountability from its former colonizer. However, as emphasized by the Nigerian panel, these demands must be rooted in strategic, coordinated efforts between government and civil society actors. Reparations are no longer a rhetorical device or distant aspiration. They are becoming an organized, morally anchored movement—rooted in justice, shaped by history, and driven by a vision of a more equitable future. We’ve got the edge. • "content": "Oleksandr Usyk shrugged off accusations of cheating and fakery, saying he was ready to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world for a second time when he fights Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on July 19. The fight will be a rematch of a controversial August 2023 “low blow” clash in Wroclaw, Poland, that Usyk won after being allowed to recover from what the referee ruled was a shot below the belt. Briton Dubois has since acquired the IBF belt vacated by the Ukrainian, who still holds the WBC, WBA and WBO versions, after beating Tyson Fury for the undisputed title in May last year. “I’m ready right now,” Usyk, 38 and still unbeaten, told a press conference at the stadium on Tuesday. Dubois’s trainer Don Charles weighed in by saying the Ukrainian deserved an acting Oscar for his performance in Poland. “You conned the referee, you conned us, you conned the boxing world,” said Charles after Usyk’s camp had accused Dubois of fighting dirty that night. Usyk, smiling, said the Oscar would be coming. “You must teach your fighter to punch clean,” he added. “It’s just talking. For me it doesn’t matter. It’s my road. Blah, blah, blah. I respect all my opponents.” The Ukrainian’s promoter Alex Krassyuk said his man was still hungry and the world would see “a version of Usyk that you have never seen before. No more controversies, no more question marks”. Manager Egis Klimas said after photographs of the blow were produced, with Usyk’s camp accusing Dubois of up to 20 low blows, that the Ukrainian champion could not be accused of cheating. “Don’t call my man a cheat,” he said. “He didn’t cheat. He had an opportunity to rest and he rested...tell it to the referee, not my man.” Promoter Frank Warren said that first fight was history and July, the first time an undisputed heavyweight four-belt title bout has been fought on British soil, would set the record straight. Dubois promised he would be exacting his revenge. “I can’t wait to put him to sleep,” said the 27-year-old. “I’m on fire now. I’m just pent up. I’m ready to go. It’s going to be a bloodbath...in the ring on the night he’ll be doing a funny dance when I hit him. “We don’t care about no body shots. We’re going to knock him out on July 19.” We’ve got the edge. Arsenal lost 1-0 against PSG in the semi-final first leg at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night. Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the encounter to give Luis Enrique’s side a first leg advantage. Both teams will clash in the second leg next Wednesday in Paris. However, Rooney wants Arsenal to approach the return leg against PSG with belief. The Englishman advised Mikel Arteta’s side to be patient, slow the game down and be clinical against the French Ligue 1 champions when both sides meet next week. “I hope Arsenal go on and win the competition, but they have to go in to the second leg with belief,” Rooney told Amazon Prime Video Sport. “They have to be patient, slow the game down, take the ball at the right times and be clinical.” Arsenal will now shift their attention to the Premier League this weekend, where they will host Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium. They currently sit in second place on the Premier League table behind leaders and champions Liverpool. • "content": "Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the BRICS group, pledging support for its mission to establish a fairer, rules-based international order. Tuggar made this declaration during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he emphasized Nigeria’s alignment with the bloc’s vision for global financial reform and multilateral cooperation. BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Nigeria joining as a partner nation in January 2025. Related Stories Japa: UK deports immigration offenders and failed asylum seekers to Nigeria and Ghana IMF to FG: Stay vigilant, trade tensions may hurt Nigeria’s earnings The bloc now represents half of the world’s population and accounts for approximately 40% of global GDP, positioning itself as a significant force in global economic and political discourse. Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s gratitude to Brazil and BRICS for granting the country Partner Country status, describing it as a step toward a more inclusive global system. “At a time when global institutions face growing strain, Nigeria stands with BRICS in championing a fairer, rules-based international order. We support reforms in global finance, peace and security, and UN governance,” Tuggar stated. Tuggar highlighted the unprecedented challenges facing global institutions, including climate change, governance gaps, public health crises, technological disruptions, and economic instability. He reiterated Nigeria’s support for Brazil’s 2025 BRICS priorities, which focus on fostering fairness, sustainability, and mutual respect within the multilateral system. “Nigeria offers a dynamic, youthful population, a strategic market, and strong credentials in peacekeeping and South-South cooperation,” Tuggar added, emphasizing the country’s potential contributions to the bloc’s objectives. As part of his engagements in Rio de Janeiro, Tuggar held discussions with the top management of Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company, to explore strategic energy sector cooperation. “We also discussed ways to deepen Nigeria-Brazil ties through shared investment opportunities and sustainable economic growth, ” he noted. The BRICS meeting marked the first gathering of its kind since Trump-era policies disrupted the global economy and weakened traditional multilateral institutions like the Group of 20 (G-20). During the meeting, foreign ministers deliberated on strategies to address tariff upheavals and enhance cooperation among Global South nations. Under Brazil’s yearlong presidency, BRICS foreign ministers will prioritize aggressive climate action, public health cooperation, strengthened trade ties, and a defense of multilateralism. Brazilian officials have emphasized that the bloc’s purpose is not to challenge U.S. leadership but to promote the development of emerging economies. “The view that BRICS is an anti-American bloc is completely wrong,” Brazilian ambassador Mauricio Lyrio stated during a preparatory meeting. “ The bloc was created to promote the development of developing countries, not to antagonize rich countries.” Nevertheless, Brazil’s agenda positions BRICS as a potential bulwark of multilateralism, particularly as Trump’s policies have undermined global institutions. Since taking office, Trump has withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization, gutted foreign aid programs, and raised doubts about American participation in the G-20. Nigeria’s inclusion in BRICS reflects its commitment to advocating for reforms in international organizations and strengthening ties among developing nations. Tuggar’s remarks underline the country’s dedication to multilateralism and sustainable development, aligning with BRICS’ broader mission to reshape global governance frameworks.",

The singer claimed that fuji music is “dying” and called for urgent actions to address the situation. He stated that after the meteoric rise of Remi Aluko and his contemporaries in the early 2000s, he hasn’t witnessed the rise of any other fuji musician. On his X handle, he wrote, “I stand to be corrected. “I feel Fuji music is dying and something needs to be fixed urgently.. After the blowing up of Remi Aluko and the likes in 2001 Or 2002, I gaven’t heard nor seen another Fuji artist blow up.” Fújì emerged in the 1960s, evolving from the improvisational wéré music, also known as ajísari, which was performed to awaken Muslims before dawn during the fasting season of Ramadan. The genre was named after the Japanese stratovolcano, Mount Fuji, by Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, the pioneer of wéré. Other renowned Fuji artists include K1 De Ultimate, King Saheed Osupa, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, and Obesere. Pop artists like 9ice, Lord of Ajasa, Olamide, Small Doctor, Asake, Naira Marley, Qdot, and Seyi Vibez have also drawn inspiration from Fuji. Recall that in a post shared on Instagram yesterday, his daughter, Damilola Adegeye, accused her stepbrother, Dayo, who also doubles as his father’s manager, of holding the musician hostage and forcing him to work under duress. Nobody has been able to get in touch with their father, who, with the assistance of Dayo, his mother, brothers, and driver, has managed to keep him out of the spotlight, she claims. Damilola also stated in her post shared on the video and picture sharing platform that attempts to contact their father have failed and that he has not visited their home recently. King Sunny Ade, in a video shared on Facebook on Tuesday, revealed that he was in good shape, had neither been kidnapped nor in danger, and also thanked his fans for caring about his well-being. “This is to clarify to everybody that I was not kidnapped, nor did I kidnap myself, but we thank God, and I have to thank the whole world with calls from many of my fans wanting to know my well-being and state.” King Sunny Ade said in a video shared yesterday. • "content": "The attack also reportedly targeted political figures at the occasion including former Minister of Education and two-term Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada. The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, has been allegedly attacked by thugs linked to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, who violently disrupted the NANS inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday in Abuja. The attack also reportedly targeted political figures at the occasion including former Minister of Education and two-term Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada. Speaking to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, Atiku claimed that the attackers, armed with cutlasses and guns, stormed the venue — The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro — in a coordinated assault that left several attendees injured and many robbed of their phones and personal belongings. “At the inauguration hall which I personally paid for at The Wells Carlton Hotel, Asokoro, Seyi Tinubu arrived with a large number of security men and ordered them to stop the event,” Atiku said. “The management of the hotel informed me about the interference, but I decided to go ahead with the inauguration. Immediately after we were inaugurated and Senator Shekarau began his speech, Seyi’s thugs entered the hall wielding guns and cutlasses. They stopped the senator, began stabbing people, and chased others away, snatching phones and valuables in the process.” Atiku further alleged that the attack was premeditated, linking it to an earlier attempt by presidential aides to silence him with a bribe. “Before the day of the inauguration, Seyi had asked the Senior Special Assistant on Students and Youth Affairs to lure me into silence with money. I was told he was ready to offer me a hundred million naira. My refusal to accept the bribe led to the attack yesterday.” “When Seyi’s thugs, led by one Ladoja, came in with machetes and guns, they beat people and injured many. Nigerians should beg Seyi to spare my life,” Atiku said, sounding a note of distress. “They attacked Senator Shekarau, the former Minister of Education, and also Captain Idris Wada, the former governor of Kogi State. Fortunately, both of them were whisked away by their security details. I, however, was taken to an unknown location after being beaten and injured.” All efforts by SaharaReporters to contact the former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, and the former Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada, were unsuccessful, as they did not answer calls or respond to messages sent to them. SaharaReporters previously reported that the newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, accused Seyi, son of President Bola Tinubu, of attempting to take his (Isah) life. He also accused the president's son of disrupting the inauguration ceremony of the association scheduled to hold at The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja. Isah, who emerged as NANS President at the association’s national convention held on February 27, 2025, made the allegations on Tuesday in a phone call to SaharaReporters, claiming that his life was under immediate threat. \"At The Wells Carlton, Seyi Tinubu and his thugs are around to scatter our inauguration,\" Isah alleged. \"Seyi has just ordered for me to be assassinated after the plea to buy me with money failed.\" According to the students leader, Seyi Tinubu allegedly instructed the hotel management to shut down operations, effectively locking guests inside and halting all movements to and from the premises. \"He has instructed the management to shut down everything. They have just informed me,\" Isah said. The NANS convention earlier this year was reportedly marred by factional disputes and allegations of external influence, raising tensions ahead of the planned inauguration.",

      • "content": "Daily Post Nigeria NNPCL sacks Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna MDs, others Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Business NNPCL sacks Port Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna MDs, others Published on April 30, 2025 By Ogaga Ariemu The new management and board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, led by its Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, and Musa Ahmadu-Kida, as executive non-chairman, have reportedly sacked the managing directors of the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries operated by the state-owned firm. Also, some senior officials of NNPCL have been shown the exit door, among them is Bala Wunti, a former chief of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services, a subsidiary of NNPCL. This comes as the new management also asked many officials with one year to their various retirement dates to leave. Reliable sources at the NNPCL who preferred anonymity confirmed the managerial shake-up to DAILY POST on Tuesday night. The source said, “These people are MDs of Port Harcourt Refining Company, Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, and the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company. “So you know more on the issue, some other senior managers were asked to leave as well”, the source stated. Also, another official of the company confirmed this, stating that “Bala Wunti was also told to leave. Several of them who have a year to retirement were asked to go. Maryam Idrisu was appointed Managing Director of NNPC Trading.” However, the Spokesperson of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, is yet to respond to enquiry on the shake-up as of the time of filing this report. Recall that in April 2025, President Bola Tinubu sacked Mele Kyari and Chief Pius Akinyelure as GCEO and Chairman of the Board and replaced them with Ojulari and Ahmadu-Kinda. The sack came amid reports of abysmal performance of Port Harcourt and Warri refineries after their rehabilitation last year. Despite the announcement of production of petroleum products at the Port Harcourt refinery, the plant had operated below 50 percent. More changes followed the revelation that the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company has remained shut since January 25, 2025, due to safety issues in its Crude Distillation Unit Main Heater. Recall that an April 2025 document from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority revealed that the refinery, which gulped $897.6 million in maintenance costs, failed to produce Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and was shut down barely a month after former NNPCL boss, Kyari, declared it operational.
