      • "content": "NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 30 — Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered the immediate transfer of the Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) and a General Service Unit (GSU) contingent in Narok following Monday’s violent confrontation in Angata Barikkoi that left five civilians dead and several officers injured. IG issued the directive during a high-profile visit to the volatile region, where he assessed the aftermath of the failed police operation. Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp The confrontation occurred on April 28, when residents resisted a court-sanctioned operation, triggering a deadly clash with law enforcement personnel. Addressing a packed public baraza alongside senior police officials and local leaders, IG Kanja expressed regret over the tragedy and stressed better coordination and community engagement could have averted the confrontation. “The loss of life is deeply regrettable and should never have occurred,” Kanja said. “I have referred the matter to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for a thorough investigation. No one is above the law.” In a bid to restore public trust and calm tensions, Kanja directed the posting of a new team of security officers to oversee security in the area and promised wider policing reforms tailored to the region’s needs. “DCI you must recall the DCIO here and post a new one that will work with the people,” he directed. Lasting peace He urged residents to uphold the rule of law and work with police to ensure lasting peace. Accompanying the IG were Deputy IG of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, DCI Director Mohamed Amin, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, and other top-ranking NPS officials. Political leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Belgut MP Nelson Koech, and Emurua Dikirr MP Jonah Ngeno, condemned the excessive use of force and demanded swift action against officers found culpable. They echoed calls for accountability and emphasized the need for lawful engagement with communities. As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, with calls growing for justice and structural changes in how security operations are conducted in rural areas.",

      • "content": "In a bid to foster unity and drive inclusive national development, President William Ruto on the night of Tuesday, April 29, 2025, held a consultative meeting with leaders from Meru County at State House, Nairobi. Taking to his official X account after the meeting, Ruto emphasised that ongoing consultation and unity among leaders are essential for achieving national development and shared prosperity. He highlighted that when leaders share a common vision, they are better positioned to address the needs of the citizens effectively. “Constant consultation and unity of purpose among leaders are crucial in our endeavour to work together for inclusive national development and shared prosperity,” he stated. “Additionally, when leaders have a common vision, they are able to meet the needs of citizens.” Issues discussed In addition, the head of state disclosed that the meeting covered key issues such as improving roads and increasing returns for coffee, dairy, tea, avocado, and miraa farmers, as well as addressing security, health infrastructure, student accommodation, affordable housing, and fresh produce markets. “Among the issues discussed were roads and better returns for coffee, dairy, tea, avocado and miraa farmers. Others were security, health infrastructure, student accommodation, affordable housing and fresh produce markets,” Ruto stated. The leaders were led by Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, and included Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly. “Held a consultative meeting with leaders from Meru County at State House, Nairobi. They included Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, Members of Parliament, and Members of the County Assembly,” he disclosed. Miraa farming This meeting comes weeks after Ruto vowed to deal with cartels in the miraa sector . Speaking in Maua Town, Igembe South, during his Mt Kenya tour on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Ruto told Maua residents that the businesspeople working in cahoots to deprive farmers of their rightful shares should either drop their antics or face jail. The head of state, who did not pronounce the third option but allowed the residents to shout, implied that they would proceed to heaven for sabotaging the miraa sector. Which loosely translates to: “Those who have created a cartel in the miraa sector, you have three options: either you stop, I take you to jail, or you go the other journey,” Ruto stated. He, however, informed Maua residents that his administration was keen on revitalising the sector, which has experienced several challenges in the recent past. • "content": "APRIL 29 – Starbucks will hire more baristas and scale back plans to roll out automation, the coffee shop giant’s chief executive Brian Niccol says. Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp The move, which is part of his strategy to win back customers, comes as other food and drink chains increasingly adopt technology to cut costs. Also on Tuesday, the firm announced worse-than-expected financial results as its sales continue to fall. Mr Niccol was brought into Starbucks last year tasked with turning the business around as it struggles with rising prices and consumers cut back spending. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve actually been removing labour from the stores. I think with the hope that equipment could offset the removal of the labour,” Mr Niccol said during a call with investors. “What we’re finding is... that wasn’t an accurate assumption with what played out.” Increasing staff numbers was tested in a handful of stores around the time Mr Niccol joined the firm in September 2024. He has been expanding the approach to include around 3,000 stores this year. At the same time the firm said it will pull back from deploying its Siren Craft System. Named after the iconic Starbucks logo, it is a suite of technology and equipment that was introduced in 2022 to streamline drink-making. Mr Niccol highlighted that taking on more staff would mean higher costs but said he was “banking on some growth to come with the investment”. Alongside recruiting more baristas, Starbucks is also revamping its coffee shops, menus and the company’s dress code . Starbucks said in April that its baristas would wear dark, single coloured shirts to “allow our iconic green apron to shine and create a sense of familiarity for our customers”. In January, it reversed rules for its cafes in North America that allowed people to use their facilities even if they had not bought anything . The changes were a U-turn from a policy introduced six years ago that allowed people to linger in Starbucks outlets and use their toilets without making a purchase. So far Mr Niccol’s turnaround efforts have seen limited results. The company’s latest financial figures showed that global sales fell by 1% in the three months to the end of March, the fifth quarterly decline in a row. But while trading continued to show weakness in the US, which is its biggest market, sales rose in China and Canada. Starbucks shares fell by more than 6.5% in extended trading after the earnings were announced. By BBC",

Here’s how: Stop guessing what your customers want and start listening. According to McKinsey, companies that excel at personalisation generate 40 per cent more revenue. That’s not a coincidence. When you understand your customers’ needs, desires, and pain points, you can create messages that resonate on a deeper level. Think beyond demographics. Dive into their behaviours, preferences, and purchase history. Leverage data to create micro-segments and deliver hyper-targeted messages. Personalised emails, dynamic website content, and data-powered recommendations are no longer optional – they’re expected. But a word of caution: With great data comes great responsibility. Respect your customers’ privacy and adhere to data protection regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Kenya’s Data Protection Act. Transparency and trust are paramount. Instead of sending a generic email blast, imagine a personalised message to a customer who recently purchased running shoes, offering tips on injury prevention and local running routes. That’s the power of knowing your customer Stop selling for a minute and start helping. Today’s consumers crave authentic, valuable content that addresses their specific needs. Think: -How-to guides that solve real problems -Videos that explain complex topics simply -Stories that inspire or educate -Useful tips that make people’s lives easier Instead of just promoting your products, become a trusted resource, not just a vendor. Today’s consumers, especially millennials and Gen Z, are buying into values, not just products. According to the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer, 63 per cent of consumers choose brands based on their beliefs and values. But authenticity is key. Don’t just jump on the latest social bandwagon. Identify what your brand truly stands for and integrate that into your customer experience. Whether it’s sustainability, inclusivity, or innovation, walk the talk. Remember that bank that committed to supporting women entrepreneurs? They didn’t just create a “women’s banking” product. They established a comprehensive programme including mentorship, networking opportunities, and flexible financing options. They enabled empowerment, and the result was a 45 per cent increase in women-owned business accounts and a loyal community. At the heart of every purchase decision lies a human truth, a universal emotion, need, or desire that goes beyond demographics. Great marketing is not just data-driven, it’s deeply human. It’s about understanding the fears, hopes, aspirations, and struggles that drive your customers’ choices. According to a Harvard Business Review Study, brands that connect emotionally outperform their competitors by 85 per cent in sales growth. To achieve this, go beyond surface-level personas. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter Dive into qualitative insights; what keeps your customers up at night? What do they dream of achieving? When you align your messaging with these emotional drivers, you don’t just sell a product, you build a relationship rooted in empathy and relevance. For example, a bank that understands young entrepreneurs’ fear of failure and dreams of financial independence can craft products and content that feel less transactional and more like a trusted partnership in their journey. Personalisation today is standard, but true personalisation isn’t just inserting a customer’s first name into an email. It’s about deeply knowing where your customer is on their journey, who they are, and what they care about at that exact moment. When you tailor your communication based on context, recent behaviour, emotional needs, life stage, and preferences, you demonstrate genuine care, which turns brands from mere service providers to indispensable partners in the customer’s lives. It’s no longer about mass marketing; it’s about meaningful one-on-one engagement at scale. Today’s customer journey is non-linear. Consumers interact with brands across multiple touchpoints. Adopt an omnichannel approach that offers a seamless, consistent experience across all platforms. Imagine a customer browsing your website on their laptop, adding items to their cart, and then completing the purchase on their mobile app. The experience should be seamless and consistent, regardless of the device. Your team is your most valuable marketing asset. When they believe in your brand and naturally share their enthusiasm, it creates authenticity that no paid advertising can match. Encourage your employees to share their experiences on social media, participate in industry events, and become brand ambassadors. The bottom line is, the future of marketing is about building genuine connections, providing real value, and standing for something meaningful. - The writer is the head of Brand and Marketing at Stanbic Bank, where she leads brand strategy and reputation management across Kenya and South Sudan.",

      • "description": "As businesses worldwide continue to navigate several economic shocks, building international trade networks, particularly for SMEs, has become more urgent.",
      • "content": "Less than three months into his second term, US President Donald Trump is following through on his campaign pledge to use trade tariffs as bargaining chips for his country’s diplomatic, economic and national security interests with the rest of the world. First on his sights included China, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, with threats of upcoming tariff action on the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. Economists have in the past cautioned that tariffs - taxes charged by importing countries on goods and services from exporting countries - raise the cost of doing business and inflation, as price hikes are passed on to consumers. The wave of tariffs has rekindled debate on the role and effectiveness of international trade in the growth and development of local economies. This debate is increasingly drawing in developing countries that have in the past decades recorded significant trade and development interactions with the US. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) indicates that Kenyan exports to the US dropped from Sh79.9 billion in 2022 to Sh64.2 billion in 2023. Imports from the same country went up from Sh93.3 billion to Sh112.7 billion over the same period. Economic shocks As businesses worldwide continue to navigate several economic shocks, including a choppy post-Covid-19 recovery, geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions, building international trade networks, particularly for SMEs, has become more urgent. In Kenya, entities including the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, KenInvest, American Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kenya Association of Manufacturers, among others, work extensively to create and maintain trade networks between firms in Kenya and those in other countries. Such business lobby groups and export promotion councils have, in recent years worked to advance the trade diplomacy agenda of their members, often leading to mutual gains for both trading partners. They have also been instrumental in creating platforms for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to explore opportunities for growth and scale through partnerships with other SMEs within the continent. In recent years, financial service providers have also nurtured business clubs with a growing membership. Absa Business Club is among the networking clubs that offer firms, particularly SMEs, advisory and logistical support when exploring new markets within and outside Africa. Upon sign-up, members of the Absa Business Club are entitled to one free foreign currency account in all major currencies, access to business overdrafts and unsecured loans, and direct access to Absa forex dealers. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter Members, majority of them SMEs, also attend quarterly networking events, workshops and seminars as well as local, regional and international business trips. A few months ago, the bank, in collaboration with its partners, sent a delegation of dozens of Absa Business Club members to Estonia and Finland. This delegation engaged in a series of business activities aimed at unlocking new trade and investment opportunities with their European counterparts, fostering valuable business relationships and potential collaborations. Additionally, the lender recently dispatched another delegation of 20 entrepreneurs to the United States for similar Business-to-business (B2B) engagements, which culminated in a business leadership conference. In 2024, the Absa Business Club hosted more than 1,000 members at an inter-county empowerment forum. Promoting growth This event focused on exploring business opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and promoting growth in the sector across the country, amidst a challenging operating environment. This came months after another cohort of 23 entrepreneurs flew to Cape Town for a five-day visit. Key locations that the entrepreneurs visited include a solar panel assembler, a wine and cheese farm and a biogas energy plant. Business clubs run by banks, investment firms and Saccos complement the work done by the lobby groups to facilitate trade linkages between firms in Kenya and prospective partners from across the world by offering non-financial services. There is further a need to look beyond the traditional trading partners and seek out new alliances that could boost Kenya’s effort to diversify its exports offering. Countries such as Estonia, Finland, Sweden and the US have emerged as hubs for innovation, with start-ups from these countries exported to other countries and earning billions of dollars in valuations. Business clubs in Kenya should work to form linkages with these and other countries that have in the past stayed in our peripheral view in matters of trade diplomacy. -The writer is the Head of SME Banking at Absa Bank Kenya PLC",

      • "content": "NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 30 – Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President in charge of performance and delivery management Eliud Owalo, says the reconstruction of Mamboleo Junction–Kipsitet Road is set to resume after the government resolved longstanding funding bottlenecks that had stalled the project. The 122-kilometre road that is being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) at a cost of Sh15.7 billion is a strategic investment in regional infrastructure and is divided into three lots, executed by China Railway No. 10 Engineering Group Ltd, Sinohydro JV with Grageb Agencies, and H. Young EA Ltd. Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp “The government has now unlocked the funding challenge for the road sector that we have been witnessing over the past two years. All stalled roads in the country will be completed in the not-too-distant future,” said Owalo. Construction work is being carried out by China Railway No.10 Engineering Group Limited. Speaking on site, project engineer Li Jingang confirmed receipt of payments and pledged swift progress. “The government has paid us. We are back and committed to delivering quality work for Kenya and Kisumu,” said Jingang. The second lot involves reconstruction of 43.4 km stretch between Miwani and Chemelil to bitumen standards at a cost of Ksh.4.96 billion. Synohydro JV with Gragab Agencies are conducting construction work. The third lot involves reconstruction of 44.7 km stretch between Chemelil to Kipsitet to bitumen standards at an estimated cost of Ksh.5.7 billion under H. Young EA Ltd. The move marks a turning point for the country’s road sector, particularly in the Nyanza region, where construction has resumed on one of its most strategic highways. Once complete, the road will significantly boost mobility, trade, and economic integration across Kisumu, Kericho, Nandi, and Nyamira Counties.",

      • "content": "Donald Trump called Jeff Bezos a ‘good guy’ Tuesday afternoon after Amazon caved and said it would remove the cost of tariffs on the price tag for products. The president was allegedly ‘pissed’ at the Amazon CEO, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling the retailer’s move as a ‘hostile and political act’ against America. However, the two billionaires spoke over the phone later Tuesday and according to Trump, were able to work things out. ‘I appreciated what he did. Jeff Bezos is very nice. Terrific. He solved the problem very quickly. He did the right thing,’ Trump said. ‘He’s a good guy,’ he added. DailyMail.com has reached out to Amazon for comment. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had just spoken to President Trump about the Amazon bombshell at her Tuesday press briefing. She said Trump’s message was clear: ‘This is a hostile and political act by Amazon.’ The president was reacting to news that Amazon plans to display the cost of his tariffs on countries like China along with the price of each product for sale on the website. Punchbowl News first reported the move citing a ‘person familiar with the plan.’ Leavitt expressed outrage at the world’s biggest online retailer, accusing them of acting in a partisan manner. ‘Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?’ she asked. Two senior White House officials revealed to CNN that the president personally phoned Jeff Bezos to voice his dissatisfaction with the proposal. ‘Of course he was pissed,’ an aide told CNN about Trump. ‘Why should a multibillion dollar company pass off costs to consumers?’ Shortly after their call, an Amazon company spokesperson told Reuters they had no intention of enacting the tariff labeling on their website, but confirmed they had explored the idea. ‘The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and (is) not going to happen,’ the spokesperson said. Earlier Tuesday, Leavitt accused Amazon of serving as a willing tool of Chinese propaganda. ‘It’s not a surprise because, as Reuters recently wrote, Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm. So this is another reason why Americans should buy American,’ Leavitt said during a White House press briefing. Leavitt cited a December 2021 news story detailing how Amazon partnered with an arm of China’s propaganda apparatus to create a special selling portal. It removed their ratings system and comments for Chinese books that were receiving low responses. The report noted that former press secretary for President Barack Obama, Jay Carney, served as Amazon’s global head of lobbying and public policy operations. He traveled to Beijing to meet with Chinese officials and helped draft a briefing document on ways to satisfy their demands. While Trump argues that his tariffs will help return jobs and industry back to the United States, estimates show that they will cost American households significantly on every day goods and services. The Budget Lab at Yale University estimated that American households could face additional costs of up to $4,400 a year, citing the unprecedented high retaliatory tariffs placed on China. The White House continues to make minor adjustments to tariffs on China, urging them to come to the table for negotiations. Trump’s new tariffs also heavily affect Chinese-born online shopping websites Temu and Shein, as the president eliminated the trade loophole allowing packages under $800 to come into the United States duty free. The sweeping tariffs are also impacting Trump’s approval rating. He has seen a drop in his approval rating in Daily Mail polling for the first time as he reaches 100 days of his second administration, with voters worried about how tariffs will impact their wallets. The president’s approval in the Daily Mail/J.L. Partners poll fell nine points from 54 per cent on April 17 – when his popularity was at a record high – to 45 per cent this week. The decline is universal with voters increasingly concerned by issues that were critical to Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the presidential election: rising prices and the economy. Six in ten say the economy is bad or getting worse, including 49 per cent of Republicans. Many believe food and their favorite products are getting more expensive. ‘He is pushing things like tariffs that will hurt us economically in the future,’ one male GOP voter from California, who backed Trump in 2024, told the survey. However, Trump still has strong support from his loyal base with more than 50 per cent approval among men, white Americans and Republicans. It is the first time since the inauguration voters have indicate their views are becoming more negative, with Trump’s bold tariff policies sparking a furious international response and volatility in the financial markets. The president has slammed polls that have his approval rating underwater as ‘fake’ and said on Monday night: ‘We are doing GREAT, better than ever before’. Trump’s first 100 days in office has been jam-packed with policies that have upended tradition in the federal government. Elon Musk’s DOGE has taken an axe to government spending in a bid to cut billions from a bloated federal budget. Almost every day, Trump has been in the Oval Office signing a flurry of executive orders overturning decades of the status quo in Washington. He has also sparked diplomatic shockwaves with threats to take over Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal, and pulled no punches in his talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end the war with Russia. When asked to pick his biggest mistake, voters overwhelmingly said ‘tariffs’, while the ‘border’ was seen as the greatest success. The Trump administration promoted its immigration crackdown on Monday by lining the White House driveway with dozens of mugshots of migrants who have been arrested. This is Daily Mail. • "content": "At least 14 people were killed in an attack by suspected terrorists who attacked a community in Borno, one of the restive states in Nigeria’s northern region, local authorities said Tuesday. The terrorists, suspected to be members of the outlawed Boko Haram group, stormed the Chibok community during a third-day prayer for a late district leader Monday evening, shooting indiscriminately and instantly killing seven mourners, Modu Mustapha, head of the Chibok local government area of Borno, told reporters. Seven more bodies were recovered Tuesday as local volunteers combed the surroundings in search of casualties. Many others sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries during the violence, which, according to Mustapha, had the trappings of Boko Haram attacks. Several houses were set ablaze during the attack. The local government official said more casualties might be recovered, as volunteers continue to search for more bodies. Boko Haram has been collaborating with its sister group, Islamic State West Africa Province, in an attempt to establish an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria. The terror groups have also extended their attacks to other countries in the Lake Chad Basin. On April 29, dozens of people were reportedly killed after a truck carrying food items and passengers hit an explosive device in a town in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, security sources said Tuesday. The incident occurred on Monday when the truck travelling along Gamboru Ngala, a town linking Nigeria with neighbouring Cameroon and Chad, hit an improvised explosive device planted along the road, resulting in casualties, including children, a senior security officer, who asked to be anonymous due to not being authorized to speak on the development, told Xinhua over the phone. “More than 26 people were killed, and at least five were injured. Some of them were seriously burned in the blast,” the security source said, noting that the casualties, mainly passengers, passersby, and residents, were trapped in a fire that erupted following the blast. Neither the government nor security agencies have commented officially on the incident, but a senior police officer told Xinhua that an investigation is underway. • "content": "Mandera North Member of Parliament (MP) Bashir Abdullahi has issued a scathing response in regard to the Blood Parliament documentary which revealed the chilling details of the General-Z led protests last year. Speaking from Parliament on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the legislator fiercely condemned BBC over the viral documentary, accusing them of turning a blind to internal matters in their country and worldwide issues such as the war in Gaza among others. The MP went on state that the documentary, which has since amassed over 2 million views on YouTube, is aimed at discriminating and defaming the country, to jeopardize progress. He also took a swipe at the Kenyan media for airing the story, accusing them of blatantly disregarding what he described as mischevious reporting aimed at degrading the country. “BBC has attended to this matter in a way that also looks at the Kenyan society as something discriminatory sort of. It looked like our media stations also picked it up without questioning how BBC aired the stories. It happens all over, people are killed, we sympathize, we move on, it is world over,” he said. Continuing his spiel, Bashir argued that it was pointless to discern the matter as it was already fully discussed nationwide and in parliament and that Kenya had already moved on from the deaths of those who lost their lives, to reconcile the country. “Let us not always clap hands at foreigners for what they are doing. That documentary was run by BBC World Service and it is being run through our national media stations, and it talks about the events that happened on June 25th, a very sad day in deed, tragic and shameful in the sense that we lost lives of our fellow Kenyans; shameful that the democracy of our parliament was about to be infringed and nevertheless it has come at this time; a time that we have really moved on, we spoke about that issue in this house, discussed it, sympathized, mourned our fellow Kenyans who passed on that day; However, it has come at this time again, as much as we agree that our fellow Kenyans lost their lives unfortunately, we also moved on to ensure that we reconcile the country as we move on,” he said. BBC documentary The documentray which meticulously revealed finer details of what transpired including unmasking the shooters who gunned down unarmed civilians as they breached Parliament in protest against the controversial Finance Bill 2024 has continued to attract sharp criticism from Kenyans and members of the political divide. Titled ‘Blood Parliament’, the 37-minute exposé, released on YouTube on Monday, 28 April 2025, reconstructs the events of that fateful day, employing 3D modelling, forensic video analysis, and eyewitness accounts to assemble the details of the shootings that shocked the nation. Two others were injured, and some workers managed to escape.“The group left earlier than usual and without the required security escort. We are now engaging with the driver and quarry owner to understand why they departed ahead of schedule, which left them vulnerable to the attack,” Ochako said.Authorities clarified that quarry workers typically follow a routine, reporting to the site during the day and returning to Mandera town by nightfall for safety. Straying from this schedule may have contributed to the tragic outcome.Family members and friends of the victims gathered at Mandera County Referral Hospital to identify the bodies of their loved ones.Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif expressed his condolences to the grieving families, assuring residents that justice would be pursued. He confirmed that the victims’ bodies would be airlifted to their respective home counties for burial.“This is a tragic loss. We are working with national security agencies to ensure justice is served and to prevent such incidents in the future,” Governor Khalif said.In response to the attack, security agencies have launched an investigation and intensified patrols in the area. The post Five Killed, Two Injured in Suspected Al-Shabaab Attack on Mandera Quarry appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

The board member emphasized that many of these individuals lack the qualifications to vie for leadership positions, as they are not members of any trade union.“There are people who are eyeing COTU leadership, and they do not have any business being involved because they are not even members of any trade union. So we don’t understand where their anxiety is coming from,” the board member added. Also Read – Atwoli Signals Exit from COTU After Serving Under All Kenyan PresidentsIn his defense of Atwoli, the board member praised the Secretary General’s long-standing leadership, noting his ability to address pressing issues, such as the misuse of social media. He also dismissed recent calls for change within COTU, asserting that these demands were not coming from the heart of the labour movement.“Those who want to bring change in COTU are not part of the labour movement. They are not one of us. These voices are coming from people in the streets,” he remarked. He urged critics to respect COTU’s internal processes and constitution, reminding them that leadership positions are reserved for legitimate members.“We are telling them to calm down. COTU has its rightful members and a constitution to follow. When the time comes, they can contest if they qualify,” he continued. The board member also confirmed that the official election notice had already been issued, and that Atwoli had publicly announced on April 18 that the COTU elections were approaching. He reiterated that those wishing to contest must first register as a trade union with the Ministry of Labour and stressed that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have no place in COTU’s leadership affairs.“If anyone wants to take part in COTU matters, they must register as a trade union, not a non-governmental organisation (NGO). Once they are registered, we can consider their affiliation. But if you are coming here with an NGO agenda, you’re in the wrong place. COTU belongs to its members,” the board member concluded.Atwoli’s leadership at Cotu began in August 2001. He was re-elected unopposed for a fifth term during the last election, with the next election scheduled for next year. The post Atwoli Secures Full Support from COTU Board for Another Term appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

The least we can do is remember their courage and keep their voices alive through a national holiday,” Kioni stated. He stressed that recognizing June 25 would not only commemorate the victims but also serve as a powerful reminder to leaders about the consequences of ignoring the people’s will.“It’s not just a date. It’s a symbol of resistance, bravery, and a wake-up call for all those in power,” Kioni added.Earlier this year, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka also proposed that June 25 be declared a public holiday to pay tribute to the Gen Z youths who died during the protests.Kalonzo described the date as a true liberation day—one that calls for the fight against injustice, the rejection of abductions, the condemnation of Kenya’s resource looting, and an end to the impoverishment of the nation’s people.“I want to make a very serious proposal—to honor the young Kenyans who died, many of them on June 25, which I call J25. If it meets the approval of young Kenyans, we will declare it a public holiday,” Kalonzo said during the official launch of the People’s Liberation Party in Februry. The proposal has already received support from civil society groups and youth movements, who view June 25 as a crucial turning point in Kenya’s democratic evolution. The post Opposition Leaders Push to Declare June 25 a Public Holiday for Victims of Police Brutality appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

IPOA also closed two cases internally, referred four to the ODPP, and closed three more following the ODPP’s directives. However, IPOA expressed concern over a lack of cooperation in some investigations. The Authority reported that several police officers and witnesses had declined to provide information, slowing the progress of certain cases.“The Authority has encountered non-cooperation from both police officers and witnesses, which has hindered the progress of certain cases. However, the board continues to engage the police command to overcome these obstacles and ensure justice for all victims,” the statement read.Despite these setbacks, IPOA vowed to remain steadfast in holding officers accountable.“IPOA will assess each case individually, and if it establishes culpability, it will issue appropriate recommendations to the relevant state agencies and inform the public of its findings once investigations conclude,” Hassan affirmed.Status Update on IPOA Investigations Into the Conduct of Police Officers During the 2024 Anti-Finance Bill Mass Demonstrations. ^EM pic.twitter.com/bQtqmAjBpZ— IPOA (@IPOA_KE) April 28, 2025The post IPOA Confirms 22 Protest Death Investigations Completed, Two Cases in Court appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

These reforms are intended to streamline hospital operations, making them faster and more efficient.Governor Nassir also noted that the county is expanding training programs for healthcare providers to further build the skills of medical workers. He emphasized that the county would intensify supervision and oversight at the hospital to ensure smooth operations and proper use of resources.“Oversight will also be tightened to ensure accountability in this vital county institution. Healthcare must work for our people, and we are making sure it does,” he stressed. The hospital has faced several complaints, with one of the most concerning incidents occurring on April 4, when an 81-year-old patient reportedly died after the hospital’s oxygen supply was allegedly turned off during maintenance. The incident is under investigation.Governor Nassir expressed his condolences to the families affected by the oxygen supply issue.“There was an incident. It is claimed that oxygen was cut off at Coast General Hospital, which may have led to the death of an elderly patient,” he said.Nassir met with the family of the deceased on Tuesday, agreeing to an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. The family has hired a private pathologist for the post-mortem, and both the hospital and Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) have been asked to submit detailed reports.“Anyone found responsible will face the law. There is no other way about it,” the governor said, urging the family to be patient as the investigation continues. The post Governor Nassir Relocates Office to Coast General Hospital for Service Reforms appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

      • "content": "US President Donald Trump has celebrated the 100th day of his second term in office with a campaign-style speech, touting his achievements and targeting political foes. Hailing what he called a “revolution of common sense”, he told a crowd of supporters in Michigan that he was using his presidency to deliver “profound change”. The Republican mocked his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, and aimed fresh criticism at the US Federal Reserve’s chairman, while dismissing polls that show his own popularity slipping. Trump has delivered a dramatic fall in the number of migrants crossing illegally into the US, but the economy is a potential political vulnerability as he wages a global trade war. “We’ve just gotten started, you haven’t seen anything yet,” Trump told the crowd on Tuesday in a suburb of Detroit. Speaking at the hub of America’s automative industry, Trump said car firms were “lining up” to open new manufacturing plants in the Midwestern state. Earlier in the day he softened a key element of his economic plan – tariffs on the import of foreign cars and car parts – after US car-makers warned of the danger of rising prices. At his rally, Trump also said opinion polls indicating his popularity had fallen were “fake”. According to Gallup, Trump is the only post-World War Two president to have less than half the public’s support after 100 days in office, with an approval rating of 44%. But the majority of Republican voters still firmly back the president. And the rival Democratic Party is also struggling in polling. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) said Trump’s first 100 days were a “colossal failure”. “Trump is to blame for the fact that life is more expensive, it’s harder to retire, and a ‘Trump recession’ is at our doorstep,” the DNC said. Trump conducted his own informal poll in Tuesday’s remarks, asking the crowd for their favourite Biden nicknames. He also mocked his Democratic predecessor’s mental agility and even how he appears in a swim suit, while continuing to insist he was the real victor of the 2020 election, which he lost. Other targets of his ire included Jerome Powell, head of the US central bank, whom the president said was not doing a good job. Trump touted progress on immigration – encounters at the southern border have plummeted to just over 7,000, down from 140,000 in March of last year. The White House also said almost 65,700 immigrants had been deported in his term so far, although that is a slower pace than in the last fiscal year when US authorities deported more than 270,000. Part of the way through his speech Trump screened a video of deportees being expelled from the US and sent to a mega-prison in El Salvador. His immigration crackdown has faced a flurry of legal challenges, as has his effort to end the automatic granting of citizenship to anyone born on US soil. During Tuesday’s speech he insisted egg prices had declined 87%, a claim contradicted by the latest government price figures. Inflation, energy prices and mortgage rates have fallen since Trump took office, although unemployment has risen slightly, consumer sentiment has sagged and the stock market was plunged into turmoil by the tariffs. Before the speech, Joe DeMonaco, who owns a carpentry business in Michigan, said Trump’s patchwork of on-again, off-again import taxes were starting to increase prices, which he will have to pass on to his customers. “I was hoping. . . he would approach things a little bit differently seeing that he’s a little seasoned coming into a second term,” DeMonaco told the BBC. “But we’re just treading water and seeing if things get better from here.” But it’s clear that Trump’s most steadfast supporters stand by him. “I’m just thrilled,” Teresa Breckinridge, owner of the Silver Skillet Diner in Atlanta, Georgia, told the BBC. “He’s handling things wherever he can, multiple times a day, and he’s reporting back to the people. . . I think the tariffs will end up definitely being in our favour.” You might also like Before you go... how about joining our vibrant Telegram and WhatsApp channels for hotter stories?",

However, he stressed that the remarks had caused significant offense to the Kisii community and urged the MP to make reparations to calm the situation. Mosiria called for Jalang’o to take responsibility by meeting with Kisii elders to discuss the matter further. As part of his proposed reparations, Mosiria suggested that Jalang’o bring 1,000 cows, 2,000 goats, 3,000 male sheep, and 1,000 pots of busaa (fermented alcohol) to facilitate the meeting with the elders. The animals, Mosiria explained, would need to be slaughtered as part of a symbolic act to seek forgiveness. Additionally, he recommended that Jalang’o be accompanied by the Luo Council of Elders to the meeting to ensure the discussions proceed smoothly.“We will meet at Manga Hills, where, as elders, we will deliberate on the matter. If you fulfill these requirements, forgiveness will be granted. In the meantime, everything is going well with the lighting. Kudos, MP Japho,” Mosiria stated, referencing the positive work done by area MP Japhet Nyakundi in improving local infrastructure.Mosiria also took the opportunity to school Jalang’o on Kisii cultural norms, emphasizing the importance of privacy in the community. He explained that public discussions of private matters, especially those related to secrecy, are highly discouraged in the Gusii culture.“If you saw witches meeting in secrecy, you should have kept it to yourself. Among the Abagusii, we take it seriously when people speak publicly about matters done in private. For the record, we are not witches; such meetings do not exist in our homeland, Gusii,” Mosiria added. He further emphasized, “What is done in secrecy should remain a secret. Talking about it publicly is where one goes wrong. We deserve a little respect, just a little.”Jalang’o Apologizes After Kisii Witches’ Meeting Remarks Spark OutrageThe controversy stemmed from Jalang’o’s remarks at a fundraising event in Kitutu Chache North constituency, where he joked about the widespread Kisii stereotype of witchcraft, particularly nightrunning. The MP had been praising local MP Japhet Nyakundi for his achievements when he shared an anecdote about stumbling upon a supposed witches’ meeting during his stay at Marani Simba Lodge.“I slept at Marani Simba Lodge, and while there, I stumbled upon a meeting of about 12 people and decided to eavesdrop. I then discovered that they were witchdoctors,” Jalang’o said. The former comedian further narrated, “They were discussing how Japho (MP Japhet Nyakundi) had impacted their work—the ones who engage in night-running—because Japho had decided to bring electricity everywhere. Now their activities have been hindered because some of those street lights are motion-detected.”The remarks sparked outrage across the Kisii community, prompting Jalang’o to issue a public apology on social media.“My heart is heavy seeing my words misquoted. I hold deep love and respect for the Kisii community — they are my family, my friends, and my people. I would never insult them. Please watch the full clip. Let’s stand for truth, not division,” Jalang’o said. The post Geoffrey Mosiria Proposes Reparations for Jalang’o Over Kisii Witches’ Meeting Comments appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

      • "content": "An alliance of global philanthropists has pledged a Ksh64.65 billion (USD 500 million) aid to boost healthcare funding in Kenya and other sub-Saharan countries. The coalition includes the Gates Foundation, the Mohamed Bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity—formerly representing the UAE—and a consortium of American donors. The funding will target key health sector reforms, with a sharp focus on maternal and newborn health programs. Although the initiative will benefit several countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Nairobi will serve as the headquarters, anchoring the fund’s operations and strategic oversight.According to fund CEO Alice Kang’ethe, the project has been in development for over a year but has gained renewed urgency as donor governments continue to scale back. In an interview with Reuters, she highlighted the need for homegrown solutions, saying the fund is committed to working hand-in-hand with African governments, healthcare experts, and community organizations.“It is an opportune moment,” Kang’ethe said, explaining that the fund aims to avoid the common donor pitfall of parachuting in foreign experts and technologies. “We’re here to support, not dictate.”This substantial donor funding comes at a critical juncture as Kenya struggles with dwindling foreign assistance following aid cuts introduced during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. The initiative’s ambitious goals include saving 300,000 mothers and newborns by 2030 and improving healthcare access for 34 million women and babies across the continent. To strengthen these efforts, the partners have pledged an additional Ksh12.94 billion (USD 100 million) in direct investments targeting maternal and child health. This contribution will run separately from the primary aid fund.Besides Kenya, other beneficiary nations include Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The program will specifically tackle the leading causes of maternal and newborn deaths—such as infections, postpartum hemorrhage, and respiratory complications in infants.Additional support comes from influential organizations like the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Delta Philanthropies, and the ELMA Foundation, underlining the global commitment to advancing maternal and child healthcare in Africa. The post Kenya Secures Ksh64.65 Billion Boost to Improve Maternal and Newborn Health appeared first on Nairobi Wire.",

      • "content": "Asia's front-runner for the papacy, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines. [Courtesy] Asia's front-runner for the papacy, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, is a charismatic moderate often dubbed the \"Asian Francis\". Tagle, 67, who shares with Pope Francis a history of advocating for the poor, migrants and other marginalised people, is known for his missionary spirit and pastoral focus. Wearing glasses with a youthful air and ready smile , the cardinal nicknamed \"Chito\" is a popular figure among the fervently religious country's more than 90 million Catholics. Born into a working-class family near Manila, Tagle was ordained as a priest in 1982 and became archbishop of the nation's capital in 2011, a politically influential post in one of the largest dioceses in Asia, where Catholicism is growing. He was made cardinal by former Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. A fluent English speaker, Tagle has been mentioned as a possible papal contender since the last conclave in 2013, when Francis was elected, and his name is on everybody's lips this time around. Underscoring the close ties between the late Argentine pontiff and Asia's most prominent bishop, Tagle was appointed in 2019 head of a key Vatican department, the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. After Francis reformed the department, he named Tagle \"pro-prefect\" in 2022, leading the section for \"First Evangelisation and New Particular Churches\", with responsibility over new dioceses. 'Trust God's knowledge' As a bishop, Tagle was known for chatting with the faithful after mass and even inviting beggars to dine with him at his residence. The adjustment to life in Rome and the formalities of the Vatican was not easy -- he told theology graduates soon after arriving in 2020 that he \"makes the Italians suffer\" when he speaks their language. He also once forgot to wear his clerical collar to a meeting. An eloquent speaker with a soothing voice, Tagle giggles at his own jokes and injects self-deprecating humour into his homilies. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter But he is also known for being outspoken. As archbishop of Manila , Tagle criticised the bloody war on drugs waged by Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines' president at the time. \"We cannot allow the destruction of lives to become normal. We cannot govern the nation by killing,\" Tagle said in a pastoral letter in 2017. Tagle has called for a humbler Church more open to the concerns of its members, and at a 2019 Vatican summit on fighting child sex abuse he pointed the finger at the Church's top ranks. \"Wounds have been inflicted by us bishops on victims and in fact the entire body of Christ,\" he told the delegation. \"Our lack of response to the suffering of victims, and yes even to the point of rejecting them and covering up the scandal to protect perpetrators and the institution, has injured our people, leaving a deep wound in our relationship with those we are sent to serve,\" Tagle said. However, he has been accused of failing to tackle the issue sufficiently in the Philippines. Questions have also been raised about what he knew about the Vatican's Caritas Internationalis charity's employment of a Belgian priest, Luk Delft, in the Central African Republic. Delft had previously been convicted of child sexual abuse and banned from contact with children for 10 years. Tagle served as president of Caritas Internationalis, the world's second-largest charitable association, from 2015 until 2022. In 2022, Francis removed Tagle and the rest of the leadership team after a Vatican-led audit found \"deficiencies\" in management and procedures. In June 2023, the pope appointed Tagle as his special envoy to the National Eucharistic Congress of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He carried out a similar role for the pontiff at the General Conference of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) in Bangkok in October 2022. The cardinal has said he never saw himself as a high-ranking man of the cloth. \"If I were God, I would not choose me to be a bishop or a cardinal,\" he said in a 2018 interview. \"But since I'm not God, God sees something in me probably that I don't see in myself and I just have to trust God's knowledge of me.\"",

      • "description": "Chinese Ambassador to Kenya terms trip a success in deepening relations with the continent and other developing nations.",
      • "content": "Kenya is increasingly becoming a focal point for China in its quest to grow influence not just in Africa but the Global South, amidst Beijing’s tariff fight with the US. Kenya’s critical role is seen in last week’s visit to China by President William Ruto, which the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi said has carved out a new path for Chinese relations with Kenya, Africa and generally the Global South. Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan termed the visit a success, adding that it had set the pace for deeper relations between China and the rest of the continent. She noted that the key achievement of the visit was the “building of a China-Kenya community with a shared future for the new era,” which takes the relations between the two countries a level higher. “Under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Ruto, this visit achieved a complete success , which is of great significance for the future development of China-Kenya relations as well as cooperation between China and Africa, and even the Global South,” she said. The envoy also said that during the visit, President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to the One China principle, which recognises “Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.” She noted that the joint statements by Kenya and China make it “clear that there is only one China in the world.” “China and Kenya resolutely oppose any form of Taiwan independence and support all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national rejuvenation,” said Amb Haiyan. President Ruto’s visit , which was at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, was the third since taking office in 2022. He is also the first African President to visit China since the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) summit convened in September last year. President Ruto also visited China at a time when the Asian country is in the thick of a trade war with the US, which started after US President Donald Trump took office and has escalated to levels that analysts globally warn are unsustainable and likely to hurt the global economy. Chinese goods exported to the US are now attracting tariffs of 145 per cent, while US exports to China attracted a tariff of 125 per cent. Both countries appeared unwilling to call a truce, and President Ruto’s visit came with speculations that the visit may be interpreted as Kenya leaning towards China in the tariff war. While in China, Ruto made a strong case for the reform of key global institutions that are seen to be led by the West, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Nations Security Council. At a public lecture at Peking University, he noted that the institutions are outdated, as they were formed to solve post-World War II challenges and needed radical changes to address the challenges that the world is grappling with today. At the briefing yesterday, Amb Haiyan noted that “Kenya appreciates China’s role as a stabiliser in the current volatile situation and China’s efforts to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the global South.” Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter This is even as she said China has not held talks with the US over the tariffs and that while it remains open to negotiations with the US, it will fight if it needs to. “Recently, we’ve been hearing the US say that China and the US are having talks and are even about to reach a deal. But in fact, none of this is true. China and the United States are not having any consultation or negotiation at the moment,” she said, adding that Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed that there are no winners in tariff and trade wars.",

      • "content": "Kariamu Town. 27 April 2025. [XN Iraki, Standard] Some towns have strange names. One is Kariamu on the edge of the infamous Happy Valley, overlooking the Aberdares to the east. The small town is about seven kilometres from Ol Kalou, the headquarters of Nyandarua County. I recently stopped there on a trip to Kenya’s hinterland. I love visiting the countryside, it’s very therapeutic, away from the hectic city life. The trip from Nairobi to Kariamu took me about three hours. Hungry in a group of three, we stopped by a small hotel for snacks. Each of us took two mandazis and a cup of tea. The mandazi were very tasty, and we ordered six more takeaways or to go, as Americans put it. The hotel could not sit more than 10 people, in my estimation. The seats and the tables were simple, with photos of food on the wall. We were the only customers. Will share the hotel name later. Then came the bill. I asked a group of my students to estimate the total. It ranged from Sh90 to Sh200. Kenyans in Majuu gave a much lower estimate. That was not surprising, used to hard currency, they probably think things are cheaper in Kenya. The total was Sh240. I even asked the young girl to redo the maths. I recall taking tea in three Nairobi hotels. A small pot with only two small cups was Sh400 in one hotel, Sh250 in the other, and Sh700 in a five-star hotel. Tea at Kariamu was tastier and milkier for only Sh20. Dairying is a key industry in Nyandarua. Aandazi was Sh15 and bigger than Nairobi’s. Calculate how much tea and mandazi could have cost us in these Nairobi hotels. Traffic jams The snacks at Kariamu made me think. Maybe, we should all make money in Nairobi and spend it in Kariamu or the rural areas. Maybe we should retire in the rural areas where life is cheap and the air is fresh. And more silent without traffic jams and fear of crime. Was that not the spirit of devolution ? Suppose we ensured good medical facilities, some recreation, adequate power supply, and internet. Why would one not retire there peacefully and gracefully? Many would love that, but they lack “connection” to those places, and loneliness would weigh them down. Some tried shifting to the counties after devolution. They regretted or still operate from the big towns, including some governors, Members of the County Assembly, and professionals. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter The low prices reflect a lack of demand and vibrancy. It is worse for the youngsters. Does that explain why alcoholism and betting are common in rural areas ? How can we make rural areas more vibrant to attract money? Devolution never answered that question. County leaders have their work cut out, but they must live by example.",

      • "description": "Some businesses, like KTDA, have developed mini-grids to supplement power from the main grid, hence cutting electricity costs.",
      • "content": "Brenda Okumu emerges from the mud-walled structure housing her posho mill, momentarily buried in a cloud of white as she dusts off flour from her clothes. Her business lies deep inside Mudoriko village, Busia County, where ugali made from dried cassava and loose maize is the main staple food, and electricity connection from the national grid is still a challenge. However, her business, a key cog in delivering this staple, now has a lifeline from a mini-grid set up by Kudura Power East Africa Ltd, which has also facilitated the conversion of her posho mill to fully operate on electricity. “It is fairly easy now because customers do not have to wait for me to fetch fuel. Even with Sh200, I can operate the posho mill for three days compared to two days if I used diesel,” she says. Busia is one of the counties earmarked for connection to the national grid. Early in the year, President William Ruto launched a Sh1 billion Last Mile Connectivity Energy project in the county to light up 20,000 households. But as residents in such areas wait for connection to the national grid, this space is being occupied by mini-grid developers. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) acknowledges regulatory challenges in streamlining the mini-grid sector. A mini-grid is a small-scale electricity-generating and supply system that is aimed at serving the surrounding community, which could be out of reach of the main grid. Some businesses, like the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), have developed mini-grids to supplement power from the main grid, hence cutting electricity costs. County Business Manager at Kudura Power East Africa Robert Oduor speaks of the challenges of running a mini-grid, citing cost as a key challenge. Since most mini-grids are set up in rural areas, he says, purchasing power is likewise lower, as some households may even have no income-generating activity, yet they need electricity. Additionally, Mr Oduor notes, investors shy away from such developments as their capital is held for long before a return on investment is realised. “Mini-grids are complex. Even when you court the investor to finance, most shy away because the payback period is normally very long, between 15 and 25 years,” he says. “That is why mini-grids are not for everybody.” Mr Oduor also notes that the process of developing a mini-grid can be tedious. For instance, one has to do a feasibility study, customer acquisition, engage engineers for design of the system, finance mobilisation, procurement and finally set up the grid. Additionally, it is the mini-grid developer who is also responsible for transmitting the power, connecting the customer and also doing wiring in the households. Mr Oduor estimates that the cost of connecting a single household is in the upwards of $850 (Sh110,500). “But we only require them to pay Sh6,000 to be connected, which is way below,” he says. Once connected, the customer then pays the balance along with their monthly bill. The average amount for most households is Sh327 monthly. “Sometimes when schools are opening, it is very difficult to get households to pay because priorities have shifted. It is worse for households that have no one in the city who can pay the bill for them,” he says, adding that the mini-grid developer has no authority to change the tariffs without Epra’s and the customer’s approval. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter This is one of the reasons why mini-grid developers have to partner with suppliers of products such as electric pressure cookers, television sets or refrigerators to help customers manage their monthly consumption. It is through such partnerships that Kudura Power East Africa Ltd has Ms Okumu’s posh mill converted from diesel-powered to electric. Epra Deputy Director of Renewable Energy Mungai Kihara notes the intricate balancing that the regulator has to do to ensure both the investor in the mini-grid and the customer are satisfied when it comes to how much the electricity should cost. This is considering tariffs for mini-grids are slightly higher than those of Kenya Power. “It is not only a matter of affordability but also of what they are willing to pay,” says Eng Kihara. Fair tariff He says Epra calculates the tariffs depending on the model the mini-grid developer has submitted to them. “We check the numbers, and we are also aware of what is happening across the world, so we can say this is a fair tariff,” he says. Eng Kihara says it is difficult to have a flat rate tariff across the board, noting that the cost of setting up a mini-grid in Busia County may be different from doing the same in Turkana. “The other thing is the cost of finance. Where did the developer get the money?” he poses. “EPRA exists to make sure the investor gets a return on investment, and also the consumer gets value for money for the tariff they pay. Epra is like a mediator.” While Epra has been licensing mini-grids since 2022, Eng Kihara says there are regulations in the works to look into how the sector can be made more attractive for investors to enter and also to exit. For example, as also noted by Mr Oduor, there are challenges with Kenya Power encroaching on mini-grid operators’ infrastructure if a customer opts out of the mini-grid for the national grid. Eng Kihara says in such cases, mini-grid developers have the option of selling their assets to Kenya Power or relocating to off-grid areas for a fee. “There are some measures that we are putting in place in the regulations. Unfortunately, this is yet to be enacted, but when it is, everyone will be happy,” says Eng Kihara.",

      • "content": "Infinity Nikki and its multiplayer-focused 1.5 update are out on Steam and a parade of drama is walking hand in hand with them. Infinity Nikki PC players were excited to hop into its Steam release yesterday but were met with technical issues that range from an inability to launch the game due to crashes and general instability. Infold’s darling dress-up game is far from the first project to suffer from technical issues at launch, but as players began to flood in, they took issue with more than its performance. Two new five-star Infinity Nikki outfits, Snowbound Ballad and Undying Ember, contain 11 pieces, meaning you’ll be spending quite a bit of time (up to 220 pulls) – and money – to collect full sets. It’s more than the usual size players are used to, and it arrived without warning. The fear is that these outfit piece requirements will only increase past the already big ask associated with collecting 11 pieces. Meanwhile, Infold moved to swiftly extend its Crown of Miraland: Peak Arena event to last three weeks instead of two, a shakeup that sent a wave of confusion through the community. With technical issues abound and Infold slowly implementing monetization practices that demand more from its fans, members of the Infinity Nikki Chinese player base took to social media platform RedNote to speak up as the issue quickly ballooned into a full-on movement. Now, large portions of its community across the globe are calling on others to not only boycott Infinity Nikki on Steam but also leave negative reviews and uninstall it on all available platforms. “What I am reminding people of is a decent amount of Chinese IN stylists pledging to not spend/pull on the banners to send a message to the digital income trackers for the game,” Reddit user kiaxxl said in a call-to-action post they published earlier today. “For gacha games, tracking how successful a new batch of content is usually measured on the first few days. Holding back your pulls for a couple of days can help show we want IN to remain fun and fair for all players.” Infinity Nikki users across social media have taken note of Infold’s strategic changes, and there have been results. It currently sits with a “Mixed” rating on Steam as players leave negative reviews warning newcomers to stay away until demands are met and grievances are addressed. The Infinity Nikki boycott snowballed to the point that Infold eventually moved to issue an apology letter across its official channels. It comes with the reassurance that many of the more prominent technical hiccups have already been addressed as the company promises to improve communication about adjustments in the future. “Thank you again for your support,” Infold’s message says. “We know we still have shortcomings, but it’s because of your companionship that Nikki can keep pushing the boundaries of imagination. Please give us another chance to let Nikki’s starlight continue shining for all of us, ensuring our sincerity never fades.” Included in the message were promises to revert Mira Crown to end May 16 and kick off the next season the same day, while also ensuring players will receive compensation in the form of 10 Revelation Crystals, 10 Resonance Crystals, and 1200 Diamonds. It’s all an important step in the right direction but far from the complete overhaul many were hoping to see. While some took Infold’s concession as an undisputed victory, others remain concerned about the team’s decision to keep its new outfits at 11 pieces. What’s more, while the studio has promised to maintain communication in the future, it appears as though some five-star outfits will still reach that dreaded 11-part requirement. Infinity Nikki stylists have already started celebrating the quick turnaround they undeniably had a hand in bringing to life, even if it isn’t exactly the win they were hoping for. Boycotters want one thing from the rest of the community now that some changes are being made: keep up the pressure. “Think about it: CN players are pointing out that if we accept the 11-piece outfits and pity as it is, most new 5 stars will be 11 pieces,” Reddit user EdensAsmr said . “Imagine if every new major update has two 11-piece 5-star banners? That means you have to save even more to be able to handle it, and 70-80 pulls per patch will not cut it.” Infinity Nikki launched for PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices in December and quickly dressed its way past 10 million downloads .
