      • "content": "NEW YORK -- , and have a few obvious things in common. They're right-handed pitchers. They're members of a starting rotation that has so far trounced external expectations, posting the lowest collective ERA in baseball. And, for different reasons, each is striving to prove he belongs. Dig a little deeper, though, and another connection can be found, hidden within each of their pitch arsenals this season: the kick change, a changeup-splitter hybrid that has surged in popularity since right-hander introduced it to Major League Baseball a year ago. Holmes began working on the pitch in November, intent on mastering the offering to ease his upcoming transition from reliever to starter. Megill, seemingly always the odd man out of the Mets' rotation since debuting in 2021, saw all the uproar around the pitch and tried it toward the end of the offseason. Canning, a once-hyped prospect seeking to rebound on a one-year contract, threw his first kick change warming up for his Mets debut in Houston, having fiddled with grips on the bench the day before. Together they have combined for a 2.66 ERA in 1082⁄3 innings across 21 starts for the club with the third-best record in baseball. The kick change is just one factor in their success, and a recent product of a larger data-driven trend dominating the industry over the past decade. \"You have guys that are maybe looking for a job or they're incentivized to try something new, and they get it to work and then it spreads like wildfire,\" Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said. \"It's a copycat league. It's always been a copycat league.\" , in layman's terms, is a modified changeup. It features a changeup-like grip and generates changeup-like spin but has splitter-like movement -- think vertical depth -- and is thrown harder. A traditional changeup has more fade, moving horizontally to the pitcher's arm side. When optimized, a right-hander's kick change can resemble a left-hander's curveball. What makes the kick-change grip different is the middle finger is spiked -- raised off the ball (pitchers' fingers lay flat on the ball for traditional changeups). Spiking the middle finger \"kicks\" the ball's axis forward through release, which alters how the ball spins and produces the pitch's downward movement, while the ring finger cuts down efficiency, killing the spin to produce more tumble. There are subtle variations to the grip: Megill, for example, has bigger hands so he spikes his middle finger more than Holmes and Canning; finger placement along the seams can also vary. The pitch and its swift spread exemplify the technological advancements made in the sport and the resulting increased willingness for players to experiment to discover every edge possible. Accordingly, different pitches -- whether new inventions, recycled offerings or conventional pitches used in other ways -- have become en vogue seemingly every year. \"I think it's just looking at, what do we know about the ball?\" pitching coach Matt Blake said. \"What do we know about spin dynamics? And how do we keep evolving guys' arsenals? And I think, with this one in particular, you see one guy get it and the league has all the tracking tools. So, anyone that comes through and throws a certain pitch, you get a look at it. It just gets replicated along the way.\" At the turn of the decade, the sweeper took the sport by storm. Before that, the high fastball became a geek favorite and filtered down to the players. This year, it's the kick change's turn. starters are part of a growing group of kick-change aficionados. right-hander became an early adopter last season after Birdsong's success. New kick-change operators this season include rookie right-hander and veteran right-hander , who has also continued throwing a traditional changeup. \"I picked it up toward the last one or two weeks of spring training,\" Lopez said. \"And right now it's to the point that if certain days it's moving, I'm like, 'OK, it's pretty good.' Some days it's just floating. Don't want to throw a floater against . \"My normal changeup still gets movement. It still gets swings. I can locate it better. So, if I throw two in the pregame bullpen and that thing is just floating or sailing, I'm like, then it's not the day for it. I'll throw one in the warmups to see if it's there.\" The best traditional changeups are usually thrown by pronators -- pitchers with a pronation bias, meaning they tend to throw a baseball by rotating their forearm and wrist inward. Supinators rotate their forearm and wrist outward, positioning them better for breaking pitches with glove-side movement. In 2023, Leif Strom, the director of pitching at Tread Athletics, an independent pitching development lab outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, sought to find a pitch for supinators to better neutralize left-handed hitters. Strom scoured Tread's internal archives in search of pitches with the desired movement profile and found fewer than 50 thrown. Using those pitches as models to study, Strom is credited with identifying, naming and applying an understanding of the kick change. \"We started to see some on X or Instagram, and when I started to see those that's when I thought it would probably be a big thing because effectiveness is one part of the equation,\" Strom said. \"If this pitch is effective, it's going to spread no matter what. \"But in terms of a pitch spreading quickly, I feel like you have to have a visual component that the sweeper did. And it just so happened that the kick change had that visual component.\" Birdsong, a 2022 sixth-round pick who had reached Double-A in 2023, was the first major leaguer to throw one in a game in June. He developed it last year after reporting to camp frustrated with his changeup. \"I tried 100 different grips and nothing worked,\" Birdsong, 23, said. \"I was throwing just a really bad fastball.\" He finally found his answer when he watched a video of the kick change on social media. He started throwing it the next day in spring training and it immediately clicked. He used it in his next bullpen and managed to throw a changeup with a negative vertical break -- a metric used to quantify a pitch's vertical movement in inches -- for the first time in his life. He honed it from there. Birdsong made his major league debut in June and threw the pitch 18.4% of the time over 16 starts. This year, working out of the bullpen, his kick change usage is up to 24.1%. It has a 46.7% swing-and-miss rate and has held hitters to a .188 batting average. He owns a 1.47 ERA in nine relief appearances. The White Sox's Martin was introduced to the pitch between starts in August by Brian Bannister, Chicago's director of pitching, and Ethan Katz, the team's pitching coach. Martin reached the majors in 2022 and threw his changeup about 10% of the time that season. But in his first major league start of the 2024 campaign, he gave up four runs in 32⁄3 innings without throwing one at all. \"I went out to play catch,\" Martin said, \"and they were just like, 'Yeah, your changeup sucks.'\" On the spot, they showed Martin the kick-change grip, and he threw a few from 80 feet. The first one felt weird. The second one tumbled enough to think there was something there. He then threw a few off the mound and the movement remained. A day later, he held the Athletics to two hits over six scoreless innings. \"I threw like 21 or 22 of them,\" Martin said. By autumn, the pitch was no longer a secret -- and one free agent in particular took note. Martin, Holmes was an established major league pitcher with two All-Star nods when he dipped his toe in the kick-change pool. Last season, while still closing games for the Yankees, Holmes dabbled with a traditional changeup during bullpens at teammate 's urging. Holmes quickly developed one that wowed Weaver, a changeup specialist. But given his role pitching late in high-leverage situations, Holmes chose not to throw any changeups in games. \"His changeup was sick,\" Weaver said. \"And we would talk about it a lot, and I was like, 'I'm done talking about it. Until you go prove it in a game, I don't want to talk about it.' Just joking with him. But then he went in the offseason, and he elevated it.\" When teams contacted Holmes in free agency with interest in converting him back to a starting pitcher -- he broke into the majors as a starter for the in 2018 -- Holmes knew the move would require implementing a pitch against left-handers to complement his repertoire of sinker, slider and sweeper. The changeup he sharpened in those bullpen sessions during the 2024 season was good, but he probed for better. Eventually, Holmes, a supinator, landed on the kick change working remotely with Tread Athletics. \"I threw some good ones early on with it and definitely felt uncomfortable, felt different,\" said Holmes, who signed a three-year, $38 million contract with the Mets in December. \"But I kind of knew some good ones were in there and so I just kind of kept messing around, kept tinkering with it until I found something that felt good. And just kind of started to evolve over the offseason.\" Holmes' kick change was ready by the time he showed up in Port St. Lucie, Florida, for spring training. Strom recalled seeing one Holmes threw during an exhibition game -- 88 mph with a negative 10 vertical break -- as one of the best he's seen. More importantly, the kick change has helped the 32-year-old Holmes record a 2.95 ERA through seven starts. He's using the pitch 16.2% of the time, holding opponents to a .182 batting average with one extra-base hit and a 38.2% whiff rate. The kick change isn't merely a luxury for Holmes -- his pitching coach believes his shift to the rotation might have been a lost cause without it. \"I would say no, it's not possible without the changeup, some form of the changeup,\" Hefner said. \"Whether it's the split or a kick change or a traditional circle change, he needed that versus lefties just to give them another look.\" Late last month, Holmes assumed the role of kick-change instructor. Megill had used a kick change earlier in the season, replacing his splitter with it, but the pitch just wasn't feeling right anymore. The grip seemed off and it wasn't good enough to use in games. So, he sought help from Holmes during a bullpen session, and they worked together to change the grip. \"That made it a lot more consistent,\" the 29-year-old Megill said. Three days later, on April 21, Megill tossed 51⁄3 scoreless innings and tied his career high of 10 strikeouts against the . Afterward, he highlighted his four-seam fastball and sinker, a pitch he incorporated last season, as the primary reasons for his success that night. But he also generated three whiffs with eight kick changes, all thrown to left-handed hitters. When he found himself in his deepest trouble, with the bases loaded and two outs and slugger at the plate in the third inning, he threw three straight kick changes and struck Schwarber out on an 88-mph offering. The pitch was out of the strike zone and Schwarber -- who ranks in the 93rd percentile in chase rate across the majors -- swung and missed. Just like that, it became a weapon for Megill, who has a 2.50 ERA and 45 strikeouts across 36 innings through seven outings. He's thrown 41 kick changes this season -- 33 to left-handed hitters -- with a 50% swing-and-miss rate and given up one hit with it. \"I got everything I need right now,\" Megill said. \"My first two times through [the lineup], I can get away all day with four-seam, sinker, slider. Third time through it's like, all right, I need that fourth pitch. That's where the changeup comes in.\" Canning's relationship with the kick change is a bit different. The 28-year-old wasn't desperate for a changeup after signing a one-year, $4.25 million deal with the Mets in December. Throwing a traditional changeup comes easy to him and he relied on one heavily during his five seasons with the . But Canning liked the vertical movement his kick change produced when he threw it for the first time warming up to face the on March 29. The grip alteration was minor; he spiked his finger ever so slightly to transform the ball's trajectory. He ditched his traditional arm-side-fade changeup that day and held the Astros to two runs across 52⁄3 innings in his Mets debut. Canning incorporated both offerings in a few April starts, giving hitters slightly different looks at the same velocity, between 88 and 90 mph. In recent outings, however, Canning has ditched the kick change, at least temporarily. \"I think it's actually helped me with my regular changeup,\" said Canning, who is sporting a 2.50 ERA through seven starts after compiling a 5.19 ERA with the Angels last year. \"It's part of the season, part of the ebbs and flows.\" Canning said he could end up throwing the kick change again this season. But it's not essential for his success, not in the way it is for Holmes. It's another tool in his kit, one that is helping the Mets perplex opposing hitters this season -- just as it is for a growing group of pitchers across the majors. \"Everybody thought I was weird for throwing it,\" Birdsong said. \"Then it took off and it moved to different orgs. And now it's everywhere.\"",

      • "content": "is leaving and isn't happy about it, but one of the greatest midfielders of the era is simply the latest player to discover that football is a ruthless business in which yesterday counts for nothing. has displayed that ruthlessness in reverse by rejecting 's offer of a lucrative new contract to leave the club he joined at six years old as a free agent, but as a player in his prime, the 26-year-old was in a powerful position to choose between staying at Anfield or, as seems increasingly likely, embark on a new adventure in with . For De Bruyne, though, it is a different story. The international has helped City win six Premier League titles, a Champions League, two FA Cups and five EFL Cups during his time at the club and registered 108 goals and 177 assists in 418 appearances since arriving in summer 2015. However, he turns 34 at the end of June, and City have decided that his future looks nothing like as impressive as his past. \"Obviously, I was a bit surprised, but I just have to accept it,\" De Bruyne said last month when he announced that he would be leaving City at the expiration of his contract this summer. \"I have not had any offer the whole year, they just took a decision.\" Despite becoming arguably City's greatest player since completing a £55 million transfer from , the club's hierarchy -- including director of football Txiki Begiristain, chief executive Ferran Soriano and manager Pep Guardiola -- have reached the conclusion that De Bruyne's time is up and he now has no choice but to head for the exit door at the Etihad. \"A lot of teammates have said that it's sad I have to go, but that's just how it goes sometimes in life,\" De Bruyne said after scoring the only goal of the game in City's 1-0 Premier League win against Wolves last Friday. \"I don't know what the future will be. \"Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I'm showing, but I understand clubs have to make decisions.\" It's unusual for players to be as vocal as De Bruyne has been about his rejection by City, especially from such a high-profile figure. When Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were released by at their end of their contracts in 2014, both left Stamford Bridge on a positive note, accepting that the time was right to move. John Terry voiced similar sentiments when he left Chelsea three years later. In contrast, De Bruyne, who has been after Inter Miami , clearly feels he has unfinished business as a City player, and that the opportunity to complete it has been taken away from him. However, few clubs have mastered the art of timing the exit of their great players as well as City. David Silva (to ), Vincent Kompany (Anderlecht player-manager), and Sergio Aguero ( ) all left the Etihad upon the expiry of their contracts, and none came close to even matching, let alone surpassing, their City feats elsewhere. De Bruyne might argue that his performances in recent weeks show that he still has plenty to give, but clubs like City make contract decisions based on what a player can do in 12 to 24 months' time, and they do it with evidence garnered from training performances, fitness data and injury recovery time as well as what happens on the pitch for the first team. De Bruyne's recent track record will have set alarm bells ringing within the City recruitment because, with the player approaching his mid-30s, his numbers hint that his decline has already begun. Since limping out of the Champions League final win against Inter Milan in Istanbul in June 2023 with a hamstring injury, De Bruyne has missed 40 games of a possible 109 for City due to fitness issues -- 34 of those due to hamstring problems. He has started just 17 of City's 35 Premier League games this season, featuring as a substitute for eight of them. Five consecutive starts is De Bruyne's longest unbroken sequence in the Premier League, and with four goals, he's on course for his lowest return since scoring just twice during an injury-affected season in 2018-19. While De Bruyne has been City's player for the big occasion in the past, scoring decisive goals against title rivals and Champions League heavyweights, this season's goals have been scored against Ipswich, , , Wolves, Leyton Orient and Plymouth. City manager Guardiola has been diplomatic when asked about the decision to release De Bruyne, referencing his past achievements and contribution, saying it will be \"almost impossible\" to replace him. \"He has been an incredible player, but the situation is what it is,\" Guardiola said after De Bruyne's match-winning goal against Wolves last week. It is Guardiola's last comment that likely cuts to the bone: \"The situation is what it is.\" When a player has served his purpose and the signs of decline creep through, even the best have to move on. De Bruyne is hurting right now, but he only has to look at his numbers to realize that City aren't wrong.",

      • "content": "The is in the rear view, and the league's 32 teams have begun to get a closer look at their draft choices and other selected free agents via rookie minicamps. We've spent the past week-plus since the conclusion of the draft talking to executives, scouts and coaches throughout the NFL, gaining clarity on the fits for some of the key members of the 257-man draft class of 2025: We also explore all the near-trades, team draft strategy, intel on key players and implications beyond this year. NFC EAST Some around the league believe receiver would have been Dallas' pick if available. He \"would have been an option,\" per a source. But, quietly, a few rival teams thought fit the Cowboys' profile as a no-nonsense offensive lineman with pedigree. Dallas tried to trade down from No. 12 but was not able to pull off a deal. Early-third-round corner ., meanwhile, was considered one of the best value picks in the entire draft. \"I thought there was a big drop-off at corner after him, that's why I thought he had a chance to go late 1 or early 2,\" an executive with an AFC team said. A team source said of second-round pass rusher : \"Leadership and explosion. Sometimes you just see it right away.\" This was a don't-overthink-it pick. The Cowboys didn't get a receiver out of this draft, but they might not be done. The door is still open for a potential reunion. As one source said, \"I think it would be good for them both.\" The Giants said they settled on after the Monday meetings of draft week. \"At that point he had checked all the boxes,\" a team source said of the Ole Miss prospect. They also decided they wouldn't trade above Pittsburgh, banking on the Steelers opting for defense at No. 21. And in talking to teams in the 20s about a trade up, the Giants made clear they would not part with the No. 65 pick. Houston was comfortable with that. While the Giants worked out the week before the draft, Sanders sensed much earlier that New York probably wasn't in the cards for him. Sanders openly acknowledged during the predraft process that he didn't hit it off with Giants coaches, per a source. General manager Howie Roseman broke from precedent by drafting a true off-ball linebacker in the first round. Philadelphia hadn't done so since Jerry Robinson in 1979, but was too good to pass up. Several teams saw him as a top-10 talent but had concerns about his durability after multiple injuries in college. The selection of Campbell shows the Eagles are trusting defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and his staff to develop young players at all positions. Last season's experience with and should help the Eagles transition rookie defensive backs and . Philadelphia will put them in positions to compete and let the results play out over time, not forcing them into specific roles too early. The Eagles love Mukuba's instincts, field vision and ball awareness, along with McWilliams' man coverage skills and physical playing style. With quarterback in the sixth round, the Eagles had enough interest that Roseman called Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon personally to get the predraft lowdown on the prospect. Washington got a plus starter with second-round defensive back , who has size, speed and instincts. Selecting him at No. 61 was considered great value. One aspect that might have hurt his value slightly: Multiple teams discovered a back injury in the predraft process. This wasn't a major red flag for some teams, but it was at least a mild concern that \"probably caused him to slide a bit,\" as one AFC exec said. However, people around Amos and the Commanders did not seem overly concerned by it. First-round offensive lineman . gives Washington flexibility on its right side. He can compete with second-year man at right tackle, and Coleman could kick in to guard eventually. Veteran is still in the mix, too. NFC NORTH Chicago quieted trade calls with the pick at No. 10. I've heard from multiple teams who said the lack of a trade from Picks 3 to 25 was inspired in part by Loveland going off the board. Had he made it into the teens, someone would have made a move. While Penn State's was the bigger name, Loveland's traits and upside drove week-of-draft buzz that he was the top tight end in this class. Some inside the league believe the Bears tried to make an early Day 2 move, possibly to move up four spots to Tennessee's selection at No. 35 overall. Knowing Chicago's legwork on running backs, Ohio State's would have made a lot of sense in that regard. While Chicago has been linked to free agent running backs, typically teams like to first see what their rookies can do in May and June, with live on-field reps -- a great chance for seventh-round back . Monangai has an intriguing skill set. One of the most compelling stories of Day 2 was Detroit trading up 32 spots to the early third round to take a receiver with 28 catches last season at Arkansas. But is a prime example of why the predraft process matters. TeSlaa was off the draft radar and had to scramble to get an invite to the Hula Bowl, which led to an invite to the Senior Bowl. He performed well at both, then caught scouts' attention at the combine by running a 4.43-second 40 at 6-foot-4 and 214 pounds. Had TeSlaa not gotten that Hula Bowl invite, his draft positioning would have looked far different. But once teams started to see him up close, they scheduled interviews with him and did their research on why he didn't get the ball at Arkansas. It wasn't because of attitude or work ethic issues -- his personality shined in the process, becoming Detroit GM Brad Holmes' favorite player in the draft. Some attributed his low production in college to lack of communication and inexperience at quarterback. TeSlaa also had great predraft processes with the (No. 71) and the (No. 72), so it wasn't lost on TeSlaa that Detroit traded directly in front of those two, plus Denver at No. 74, which went to receiver . The Packers passing on cornerback for the first six rounds seems to signify that is staying with the team, barring a unique trade offer or a contractual stalemate. The Packers and Alexander are working on a resolution that should materialize soon. A revised contract for Alexander, due $17.5 million in cash this year, to balance his injury history with his longtime status as an elite corner might be the most sensible play. The pick at No. 23 -- a first-round receiver for Green Bay for the first time since 2002 (Javon Walker) -- was simply too good a value to pass up. Golden entered the draft believing 10 to 20 would be his range. Fourth-round pass rusher was one of two players in the FBS to produce at least 40 pressures and at least 10 run stops. Entering the draft with four picks put Minnesota's strategy into focus. The Vikings had built a pretty strong depth chart, knowing they had few picks, thus alleviating the stress of having to fill holes. The No. 24 pick filled the only major hole, left guard, with Ohio State's . That left the Vikings in a position to take a few upside plays. Third-round receiver fits that mold. The Vikings had intimate knowledge of Felton coming out of Maryland's pro day, which Minnesota wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell helped run. McCardell was able to get an up-close view of Felton. Felton's 4.37-second 40 and near-40-inch vertical make him an intriguing target for Minnesota QB , and for a receiver room that faces a few questions: was arrested on suspicion of DUI last summer, which could result in an eventual suspension, and is a 2026 free agent. The Vikings got to work on a trade a week before the draft. The legwork was done by the time Day 3 came around. Howell, with the Seahawks last year and a starter as a rookie with the Commanders in 2023, is the next student of the Kevin O'Connell QB rehabilitation school. NFC SOUTH Atlanta's move back into the first round to secure pass rusher . was perhaps the boldest move of the week. Giving up the franchise's 2026 first-rounder comes with risk, which the Falcons were willing to accept to fix their uneven pass rush once and for all. Walker was considered one of the safest picks in the draft, and Pearce, should he maximize his immense skill, has star potential. \"What concerns me is they gave up a first-rounder for a player with character concerns,\" an NFC executive said. Pearce was considered a divisive figure in the draft process. Sources told ESPN that Pearce was off multiple teams' draft boards because of maturity concerns. But Atlanta spent significant time with the player in the predraft process, vetted any concerns and feels good about his ability to assimilate to the NFL. \"He's a fun player to watch,\" a veteran AFC scout said. \"Very explosive. I think Raheem [Morris] will do a good job relating to him and keeping him on track. He will need to have a plan for him.\" Carolina's No. 8 selection felt like like a moving target. The Panthers were linked to Georgia's for a while, and I do believe the love for him was real. In the end, though, taking a smaller front-seven player (6-foot-1, 243 pounds) was an issue. Some in the building were intrigued with Ole Miss defensive tackle . And I believe that if Mizzou right tackle was there, the Panthers would have thought long and hard about it. Carolina had trade talks with multiple teams, including San Francisco (No. 11), about a potential trade back, but the team decided it didn't want to lose . The Panthers got their much-needed defensive help with pass rushers and . These are two different kinds of picks for Carolina. Scourton has the mindset to be a steady, productive pro immediately. Umanmielen is an upside play as the Panthers believe he can be a double-digit-sack guy but needs to get stronger and more dedicated to a complete game, not just when rushing the passer. New Orleans went offensive line in the first round for the second consecutive year, but this particular move made sense around the league because ., in the eyes of scouts, was a clear-cut top-10 pick, despite many mock drafts having him in the teens throughout the process. \"He's awesome. He's [five-time Pro Bowl tackle] ,\" an NFC executive said. An AFC exec said of second-round quarterback : \"He was a hot name Day 2. Sounds like he would have gone pretty quickly if not for New Orleans. He's got some of what [new head coach] Kellen Moore [likes], intelligence at the position, good makeup. Will need to improve his accuracy at the next level.\" Seventh-round pass rusher is an interesting name to watch -- he has the Elijah Robinson stamp of approval. Robinson, a former Texas A&M defensive line coach and now Syracuse defensive coordinator, has developed a serious pipeline of NFL talent. While at A&M, he recruited , and , all of whom were selected in the first two rounds of the draft. He coached star . Diggs, meanwhile, was a three-time captain for Robinson's teams -- twice at A&M and once for Syracuse after a 2024 transfer. So, while seventh-rounders are not slam dunks to make a roster, Diggs brings a strong background and leadership. Third-round corner can be considered a winning pick for Tampa. I talked to a few teams predraft that listed him as a sleeper for the end of the first or early second, though some obviously thought that was too rich. \"His size (5-foot-9) is an issue, but nickels are more prevalent, and his ceiling is high due to speed and traits,\" an NFC executive said. The Bucs were linked to slot corners such as (Commanders) and (Giants) in last year's draft, so getting Parrish is a culmination of that legwork. The Bucs are very high on veteran corner entering Year 4, but they were intentional in adding two corners on Day 2 (including Notre Dame's in the second). Head coach Todd Bowles wanted better depth coming out of last year. The Bucs indeed did love Alabama linebacker , but like other teams, the overall medical profile was a bit of a concern. Corner , who went 30th to Buffalo, also had some love at One Buc Place. But the team's eventual pick at No. 19, receiver , satisfies two areas: He was considered an A-plus prospect, and he helps curb concerns whenever decides to retire. NFC WEST Second-round corner was a polarizing figure leading up to the draft. He flashed first-round talent at Michigan but didn't run a 40 predraft and dealt with injuries in college, including a knee issue that emerged in the predraft process. Part of the issue: The knee was flagged at combine testing, the results of which teams typically get in mid-to-late-April. That gave some teams pause and resulted in a slide out of the first round. Still, executives forecasted Johnson would go in the back half of the first round. That didn't happen. In the hours before Day 2, some teams considering Johnson still had questions. Arizona was fine with the issues, and as a result, Johnson had the team circled as a strong possibility entering the start of the second round. Johnson played through the knee issue at Michigan, where he became a national champion and the Wolverines' defensive MVP. If that level of play continues, Arizona just got first-round value in the second round. In the first round, the Cardinals had eyes on eventual pick and pass rusher , who went five spots before them. It feels as if they were going defensive line regardless. The Rams traded out of the first round with two tight ends in mind -- Oregon's and LSU's . They would have been happy with either player, but one team source insists Ferguson was top in that order, so he would have been the pick if Taylor was there (Taylor went four spots earlier to the Jets). Los Angeles had trade talks with teams in the top 10, but in the end the price of that jump would have been too steep. The Rams never have drafted a first-round quarterback in the Sean McVay era. Some inside the league believe that could change in 2026, with Los Angeles armed with two first-rounders (including Atlanta's pick) in what's considered a deep quarterback class. seems to be on a year-to-year schedule. The Rams liked a handful of quarterbacks, including and , but were never a major threat to take one this year. No cornerbacks? Well, the Rams are still involved in a potential trade for Dolphins cornerback , whom Miami is trying to move, though his $24 million in guarantees are cost prohibitive. Word out of the draft is that Miami was not too keen on covering some or any of that money, though perhaps that changes as the offseason continues. San Francisco rebuilt its defensive line this offseason, moving on from multiple players during free agency and replacing them with three of their first five draft picks. Whispers of trading up persisted closer to and around the draft. The 49ers discussed trade options with Carolina at No. 8 that ultimately didn't materialize. I talked to a few teams picking high who wondered whether San Francisco would move up for a playmaker such as or . And the Saints (No. 9) had been linked to , San Francisco's pick at No. 11, so a trade with Carolina would have allowed the Niners to get ahead of New Orleans, to be safe. But staying put worked out. And No. 5 pick considered the 49ers a potential landing spot if for some reason he slid into the back half of the top 10. Williams had top-10 buzz early in the draft process. Then, some teams tried to knock his modest production (14 sacks in 40 college games) and 4.76 40 time. But things always regress to the mean closer to the draft, when athletic traits win out, so Williams went in somewhere close to his proper range. And his length and bend is among the best in the draft, perfect for the 49ers' defense. During the predraft period, second-rounder struck a connection with defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Collins played high school ball in Bastrop, Texas, less than an hour away from Kocurek's hometown of Rockdale. The second-round selections of safety and tight end have a chance to pay off early. Seattle traded up to the No. 35 spot for Emmanwori, who generated some first-round buzz and whose physicality/versatility embodies a Mike Macdonald defense. The Seahawks typically know what they are doing in the second round, with , and current pass rushers and among their success stories. Multiple scouts considered Arroyo a top 20-to-25 overall talent in the draft who fell because of injury history. Seattle now has a good tight end nucleus with Arroyo and . is one year from free agency and could have trade value if Seattle explores it. As for third-round quarterback , expect Seattle to have a dual-threat package for him. Those can be hard to implement in-game, but Milroe's ability to affect the game, particularly as a runner, will be hard to ignore as he develops as a quarterback. AFC EAST With the first five picks on defense, the Bills clearly wanted to improve up front and become more athletic on the back end. Last year's defense feasted on other team's mistakes, leading the league with 24 turnovers, but that's probably not sustainable every season. Going heavy on that side of the ball -- opting for defensive line on three of the first five picks -- should help Buffalo get a few more stops per week, which will pay off in January. And the board also told Buffalo where to go. Some people I talked to in the process projected pass rusher as a second-round pick. Jackson himself loosely expected to go in the second round but braced for the third as a worst-case scenario. Buffalo -- which spent significant time with him at Arkansas' pro day, from the workout to a lunch -- got him at No. 72. First-round corner was clearly a first-round talent. And, really, Buffalo had invested heavily on offense in recent years. The Bills took skill players (receiver, tight end, running back) with seven of their 23 non-quarterback selections in the top three rounds from 2017 to 2024. So, while , this draft \"scratched an itch,\" one team source said. Miami's draft theme was to strengthen the trenches and get bigger and younger up front. The Dolphins' selection of second-round guard is considered a solid move in league circles, with his ability to play four different spots along the line (all but center) and provide physicality at 6-foot-4, 324 pounds. Miami has selected one first-round offensive lineman ( , 2019) in the past nine drafts despite losing key members in back-to-back years -- guard to free agency and Terron Armstead to retirement. One NFC exec pointed out that Miami \"refuses to really fix\" the line with more reinforcements. The Dolphins entered the draft with enough holes that it failed to address the line beyond Savaiinaea. Among Day 3 sleepers, Miami is confident that fifth-round safety . will play early due to instincts and versatility. And, with sixth-round running back , Miami sought a different body type at 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, a bruiser to complement and . The Patriots on Monday announced that Julian Edelman will enter the franchise's Hall of Fame. That's fitting because New England just concluded another draft trying to replace his production. Edelman is the Patriots' most recent 1,000-yard receiver -- in 2019. Since then, New England has drafted seven wide receivers, including three on Day 2. The latest is third-rounder , who might have the best chance of them all to surpass 1,000 yards. \"Really good player -- explosive, nimble, good hands, impressive [yards after catch],\" per a veteran NFC personnel man. When I asked someone with the Patriots what drew the team to Williams, one word I got back was \"committed.\" That played out in , via ESPN's Mike Reiss. In the days leading up to the draft, several executives were linking the Jets to offensive tackle . Wrong tackle. The Jets -- who were aware of that perception and figured it was a good smokescreen -- went with , whose length and football traits remind multiple scouts I trust of a young . \"We were fine with people guessing what we were going to do,\" said a team source, who added Membou is \"just scratching the surface\" of his potential. The Jets aren't overthinking this one: They are keeping Membou at right tackle, noticing that teams sometimes get in trouble when switching a linemen's position too often. (News flash: Playing tackle is hard) The Jets are hopeful that fourth-round receiver can curb his drops issue. Expect New York to use him on smoke routes and jet sweeps to utilize his speed early and ease him into the offense. AFC NORTH With a second-round pick, the Ravens got mid-first-round talent in pass rusher . That could pay off big for Baltimore's defense. But multiple teams consulted by ESPN say they had Green off their draft boards because of the multiple sexual assault allegations Green acknowledged at the combine. The Ravens vetted the situation and felt comfortable enough with it to select Green. Other teams did not. Elsewhere in the draft, after years of chasing offensive talent, the Ravens are finally in a place where has enough help. The draft bore that out: Baltimore didn't draft a skill player in the top five rounds for the first time since 2017. Cincinnati's draft epitomized a defense in flux. Somewhat predictably, the Bengals used three of their four draft picks on positions where they have player turmoil -- defensive end and linebacker. There's no update with defensive end 's contract situation, which is at a stalemate. My read on the situation is that Hendrickson is convicted enough to stay away from the team, having no interest in playing on his scheduled $16 million salary in 2025. Right now this is a waiting game. So, at least in the short term, could assume the Hendrickson role in the defense. But I do believe the drafting of Stewart isn't totally tied to Hendrickson's situation. Cincinnati likes not only Stewart's explosiveness, but his positional flexibility at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds. With two linebackers selected in the first four rounds, the Bengals could be bracing for life without , who could be cut. No trade has yet to materialize. Elsewhere, Cincinnati did enough legwork on running backs that at one point I thought they would draft one on Day 2. They waited until the sixth round to pick . Where to start? The Browns look at the selections of running backs (second round) and (fourth) as the end of an era of sorts. Cleveland had a good run with and but knew it needed to get younger and more explosive. Retooling the backfield was a priority entering the draft. So was third-round quarterback . A few teams tipped me off before the draft that Cleveland really liked him, presumably as a Day 3 pick. That he went in the third round was a mild surprise, but Browns sources tell me the earlier selection of to Seattle did not scare Cleveland -- it was taking Gabriel at No. 94 regardless. The Browns were also surprised their homework on Gabriel didn't get more attention in the media. Gabriel visited the team on the same day as higher-profile quarterbacks and . Gabriel is small, but he can play the position. Teams were slightly higher on Gabriel than outside draft experts were. Keep this in mind about the Browns' now-crowded quarterback room: The Browns look at the roster through the prism of value and currency, which at least one source pointed out could lead to an eventual trade if injuries happen across the league. Cleveland gave up a third-rounder and two fifth-rounders for Gabriel, Sanders and veteran (via trade with Philadelphia). Perhaps the Browns can get a pick back for one of them. League personnel evaluators forecasted that defensive tackle would go between picks 16 and 30, so the Steelers, at No. 21, got him in the right spot. A shoulder issue might have been the only thing that kept Harmon out of the top 20. His 34 pressures led the FBS among interior defensive linemen. The Steelers were comfortable with as a distributing point guard type, which makes it a mild surprise they didn't take him with their fourth-round pick. To borrow another basketball analogy, those inside the Steelers' building did not reach a consensus on Sanders as a slam-dunk pick. But the debate was close enough to justify taking him. AFC SOUTH Sitting tight is not Nick Caserio's forte. The Texans' general manager made nine selections last month -- none of which were original picks. Houston's seven trades led the NFL. And since taking the helm in 2021, Caserio's 25 draft-day trades trail only the most aggressive of GMs, Philadelphia's Howie Roseman. People in Houston's draft room will tell you Caserio doesn't move up and down for splash but simply to try to maximize value. The Texans say they believe they did that with second-round offensive tackle , whom some scouts thought might slide into the late first round. He has plenty of versatility. The Colts loaded up on defense Day 2, getting new coordinator Lou Anarumo a comfort-zone pick with second-round edge rusher . Anarumo had now-retired end Sam Hubbard for six seasons in Cincinnati, and Hubbard is a Tuiloloau comp I've heard in my talks -- a big, strong, explosive guy at 6-foot-5 and 269 pounds (Hubbard is the same height, but four pounds lighter at 265). Tuimoloau's 23.5 career sacks suggest he'll aid a Colts defense that ranked 31st in pressure rate last season (26.2%). Third-round corner endeared himself to the Colts with his competitiveness. His messaging with any rep or any predraft question was basically: I don't care who I run up against, I'm going to win. Walley can play inside or out but will most likely start inside. And this quote from an NFC exec on the Colts' first-round pick, , stuck with me: \"He sort of walked on water at Penn State. Like, beyond the great play, you could just tell he made that thing go and Penn State is going to miss his presence greatly.\" That says a lot about the player Indianapolis has added. The Jaguars got their coveted receiver help -- and more -- with the trade up to acquire -- essentially acquiring of the Diggs brothers with the selection, as multiple scouts pointed out wide receiver and cornerback as comps. Had Jacksonville stayed put at No. 5, some around the league believed receiver would've been in play. New head coach Liam Coen likes the idea of having ample reinforcements in that room, especially with the injuries he schemed around in Tampa last year. The lack of interior defensive line help is an issue that some in the building acknowledge. Edge rushers and need help. And watch for fourth-round running back to make an impact. I've talked to multiple people in the league who believe the new regime is not so high on ., and has a fumbling issue. The top of the draft was easy for Tennessee. The Titans' meetings with , from dinners to family encounters to quiz sessions on the offense, were what one source described as \"a pretty stark difference\" from the rest of the quarterback class. The Titans started to zero in on Ward in early April, which resulted in rebuffed trade offers. After that, Tennessee eyed pass-rush help. Had Tennessee stayed at No. 35, I believe Boston College pass rusher would have been a prime option based on talks with teams. The Titans ended up trading back and selecting UCLA's , who has high upside and the ability to stop the run, a staple of Dennard Wilson's defenses. Multiple teams inquired about a potential trade, but Seattle made the best offer. With two fourth-round receivers selected, Tennessee has now picked 10 receivers over the past five drafts. One of them from this year's class, , recorded 34 contested catches the past two seasons. Ayomanor and fourth-round tight end should have a path to contribute early. AFC WEST Yes, the Broncos considered moving up in the first round for Ashton Jeanty. They called around to teams picking in the top 10. But the price simply would have been \"too heavy\" for Denver's liking, per a source. And the team eyeing Jeanty (the Raiders at No. 6) was a divisional rival, thus not a likely trade partner. Rival teams said they believe Ohio State WR , off the board at No. 19, would have been in play if he was still available at No. 20. But Texas DB was an easy call. He was a riser in the process, with top-15 buzz late in the draft week. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's cousin, Terry Joseph, was Texas' defensive pass game coordinator from 2021 to 2024 and spoke glowingly of Barron as a competitor and locker room presence. Had Barron been off the board, trading back -- possibly for a running back -- was a viable option. Denver had done some predraft legwork with Houston at pick No. 25, which seemingly would have put Ohio State running back in play. Offensive tackle was one of the most fascinating prospects in the draft. His ceiling is higher than most, and his tape was better than any offensive lineman in the draft, according to multiple executives. Most teams I consulted with were not overly concerned with his recovery from a torn patellar tendon. It's the proverbial \"character concerns\" that kept him out of the top 20 per those I spoke to around the league. As one AFC personnel man put it: \"Certain things are important to him -- pass blocking, game day -- but others are not, such as practices and run blocking.\" It's up to the Chiefs, a veteran-laden team with a championship pedigree, to harness that ability and maximize the skill set. The Chiefs could have instant scoring in fourth-round receiver , who averaged more than one touchdown per game in his last two years at Utah State (21 touchdowns in 20 games). Though his size (6-foot, 205 pounds) might profile as a slot receiver, the Aggies played him outside to show his versatility. The Chiefs see him in both roles and he should come in handy for Andy Reid as a yards-after-catch specialist. Based on blue-chip players available, was clearly the best option for Vegas at No. 6. But some around the league who know GM John Spytek and coach Pete Carroll well were mildly surprised. Rashaad Penny (No. 27 overall in 2018) was the only first-round running back taken during Carroll's Seattle tenure from 2010 to 2023. The Bucs never drafted a Day 1 back during Spytek's run there from 2016 to 2024. The Raiders saw Jeanty as simply different, a true tone-changer. Then, they traded back twice on Day 2 -- moving picks Nos. 37 and 143 to Miami for Nos. 48, 98, 135, then sending 48 to Houston for No. 58 and 99. Spytek and the Raiders decided to stay open-minded on trades knowing two things -- needs along the roster were prevalent, and Day 2 was the strength of the draft. Getting three third-round picks was crucial. For months, the Chargers' brass heard the cries about Los Angeles' need for receiver help alongside & Co. The Chargers passed on a trade or other free agency options. They let walk. General manager stayed patient and got his man -- second-round receiver out of Ole Miss. He's billed as a deep threat, but part of what drew the Chargers to him is that he has more in the tank. The Chargers say they believe he has the capability to expand his route tree and be a complete receiver. He runs great \"shake' routes and in-breakers. \"And he plays faster than his (4.45) 40 time,\" a team source said. And now most of the Chargers' receiver room is occupied by players on rookie contracts, including fifth-round rookie . I don't get the sense the Chargers are eager to add a free agent there. They like the young nucleus and how it might develop. But is still out there, among others, if Los Angeles changes course.",

      • "content": "President Donald Trump has said that the opportunity to compete at football's 2026 World Cup could be an \"incentive\" for Russia to end the war with Ukraine. Russian national teams have been banned from international competitions by both FIFA and UEFA since 2022, days after the country's invasion of Ukraine. Qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico began in 2023, with 45 spots up for grabs in addition to the host nations. Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the first meeting of his administration's , Trump said he was unaware that Russia would be excluded under current rules, but suggested that ending the war could pave the way for their reinstatement. \"I didn't know that, is that right?\" Trump said. \"You want to explain that?\" \"That is right,\" replied Infantino. \"They are banned for the time being from playing but we hope that something happens and peace will happen so that Russia can be readmitted.\" Trump responded: \"That's possible. Hey, could be a good incentive, right? \"We want to get them to stop. We want them to stop. 5,000 people a week are being killed -- it's not even believable. We're going to get that war stopped.\" European qualification for next summer's tournament officially started with the Nations League in March. A total of 16 UEFA nations will qualify for the World Cup. Russia haven't played a competitive fixture since a 2022 World Cup qualifying defeat to in November 2021. They have played 16 friendlies since then, winning 11 of them. Infantino said at a UEFA congress in April that he wanted to bring Russia back \"in the football landscape because this would mean that everything is solved.\" UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin added: \"When the war stops, [Russia] will be readmitted.\"",

The Cowboys and are finalizing a trade that will send Pickens to Dallas for a 2026 third-round pick, sources told ESPN on Wednesday. The Cowboys will also send a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers and get back a 2027 sixth-round pick, sources said. Three weeks ago, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted the club was working on involving players that could be completed before or after the NFL draft. Had been available when the Cowboys picked No. 12 in the first round, the wide receiver would have been Dallas' first-round pick, sources said, but he went No. 8 to the . The Cowboys did not pick a wide receiver in the remaining six rounds, despite the need. Pickens, a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2022, is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract. Steelers general manager Omar Khan had said in February that the team was looking to reach a deal with Pickens but now appears to be moving on. The trade comes as Pickens' role as the Steelers' top wide receiver appeared to be supplanted after Pittsburgh traded for in March. The Steelers are also awaiting an answer from quarterback about whether he will play in 2025. The Cowboys will have their starting quarterback, , back after he missed the final nine games last season with a hamstring avulsion that required surgery. With Lamb and Pickens, the Cowboys have their best wide receiver duo since Lamb was paired with in 2020-21. Dallas acknowledged the desire for a No. 2 wideout at several points in the offseason and had conversations with several clubs regarding a trade before setting their eyes on Pickens. Pickens, 24, had 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns last season. He posted at least 50 receptions, 800 yards and three touchdowns in each of his three seasons with the Steelers. He missed three games in 2024 because of a hamstring strain and had a number of on-field incidents. Pickens was flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct in a Week 13 win against the . A week earlier, he was involved in a scuffle with cornerback during a Hail Mary attempt. \"He's just got to grow up, man,\" Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after the win over the Bengals. \"This is an emotional game, man. These divisional games are big. He's got a target on his back because he's George; he understands that. But he's got to grow up. He's got to grow up in a hurry.\" Tomlin also reiterated that stance in his end-of-season news conference a month later. \"There's certainly obviously more room for growth there,\" Tomlin said in January. \"I think he covered some ground in 2024, but there's certainly a heck of a lot more ground to be covered, and we'll see where it leaves us.\" Last season, the Cowboys sent a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Panthers for , who caught five passes for 46 yards but did not play with Prescott. , a third-round pick in 2022, set career highs last season in catches (49), yards (610) and touchdowns (seven, which led the team). Lamb led the Cowboys with 101 receptions for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns before ending the season on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury with two games remaining.",

      • "description": "Eight teams remain in the race to the 2025 title. Zach Kram maps the championship path for each contender.",
      • "content": "The NBA's conference semifinals represent an escalation in both stakes and quality of competition. Nobody expected the play-in teams -- outside of the -- to compete for the 2025 title. But once the playoff field is whittled to eight remaining contenders, they all have a legitimate chance. Just look at what happened in the opening days of the second round. Road teams upset the higher-seeded No. 1 , No. 2 and No. 1 in each series' Game 1. With the sport's ultimate prize now firmly in sight, let's examine what it would take for each remaining team to lift the Larry O'Brien Trophy this June. What strengths would they need to flex? What weaknesses would they need to mitigate? And what matchups would they need to exploit, or avoid? Here's how each remaining team -- sorted in order of title odds by -- can win the 2025 NBA championship. Statistical models consider the Thunder to be overwhelming title favorites. And why wouldn't they be? Oklahoma City set an NBA record for point differential (plus-12.9 per game), is led by likely MVP and boasts one of the best defenses in NBA history. But the path to a title might not be as easy as would suggest. Navigating a stacked playoff bracket could prove challenging: In the regular season, the Thunder went 2-2 against the , 2-2 against the and 1-2 against the . They also have less playoff experience than those three Western Conference foes -- as they proved in an uncharacteristic meltdown late in a Game 1 loss against Denver on Monday. To maximize their odds of winning the franchise's first championship since the Seattle SuperSonics won in 1979, the Thunder need better play from their stars going forward. Gilgeous-Alexander is in a small shooting slump, with a 45% effective field goal percentage in the playoffs, down from 57% in his remarkable regular season. And his leading sidekicks struggled immensely on Monday: shot 5-for-20 from the field, while scored just 12 points and missed a pair of crucial free throws in the final seconds. The top-seeded Thunder lost to the in the second round last season, largely because the supporting cast couldn't make the Mavericks pay for overloading their defense on SGA. Williams and Holmgren will need to step up and prove they're ready to be championship-level second and third options. Oklahoma City must also be stronger on the boards. The team added in free agency after the Mavericks' size punished the smaller Thunder last postseason, but Denver still grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in Game 1. Still, one clutch collapse doesn't destroy the Thunder's overall chance at a title. They remain the NBA's best team, on paper. Now they just have to translate that potential into reality. The Pacers have played like a member of the NBA's elite for months. They finished the regular season on a 34-14 run, and in that span they had the NBA's sixth-best net rating and top-10 showings on both offense and defense. They've maintained that pace in the playoffs, too, dispatching the Bucks with ease and seizing control of their second-round series with two wins on Cleveland's home floor. Indiana's rise coincided with the return of glue guys and , who missed time earlier in the season due to injuries. The Pacers' starting lineup, with that duo plus , and , had a plus-11.1 net rating in the regular season and is up to plus-18.2 in the playoffs -- second best among all lineups with at least 25 minutes played. Indiana's core contains a collection of complementary skill sets: shooting, playmaking, pace and perimeter defense. And coach Rick Carlisle's bench offers support from the likes of , and , who have each scored double figures multiple times in the playoffs. Most of all, Indiana knows its identity, which allows it to dictate the tempo of games and throw opponents out of their rhythm. With Haliburton pulling the strings, the Pacers consistently generate good shots and rarely turn the ball over, giving them a high offensive baseline every night. And the defense is much improved compared to last season, when it couldn't get enough stops to threaten Boston in the conference finals. In 2023-24, Indiana ranked 24th in defensive rating in the regular season and 13th out of 16 teams in the playoffs. This season, the Pacers are much more balanced. Three players who are still active in the 2025 postseason have at least three championships on their résumés: , and . Add in Steve Kerr, who won five titles as a player and four more as a coach, and , who has never won a title but has been the best player on two surprising Finals teams, and it's clear that the Warriors have the richest high-level experience in the playoffs. The Warriors will continue to rely on Curry -- who must return from a hamstring strain soon, or else his team has no chance at another championship -- and Butler, with just enough supplementary contributions from Game 7 hero , and . The defense, meanwhile, was the best in the league after the All-Star break, as the Butler-Green pairing controlled the game on that end of the floor and shut down the Rockets in the first round and the Timberwolves in Game 1. Don't discount Looney's contributions, either: The Warriors are most comfortable playing small, but the veteran center played a big role against the super-sized Rockets in the first round and 's Timberwolves in Game 1, and he might be called upon for similar contributions against either Jokic's Nuggets or the double-big Thunder in the conference finals. The Warriors have schematic versatility and ample experience implementing mid-series adjustments. One other wrinkle in Golden State's favor is that Kerr knows how to manage the postseason as an entire journey rather than a disconnected set of individual games. In the team's Game 5 blowout loss in Houston, for instance, Kerr threw in the towel early, and no Warrior played more than 26 minutes -- which helped Curry and Butler stay fresh for Game 7 a few nights later, when they played 46 and 45 minutes, respectively. Unlike the teams atop this list, Golden State doesn't have a ceiling that would allow it to cruise to a title. The team doesn't have enough consistent offensive firepower outside of its stars, and with Curry's injury the Warriors will be hard-pressed to reach the conference finals. But if he returns, they could absolutely finagle their way to 12 more wins over the next six weeks -- and in any Game 7 scenario, they might be the best bet in the field. : Nine Celtics played at least 100 minutes last postseason, and all nine still wear Celtic green this spring. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, the saying goes, and Joe Mazzulla's rotation hasn't changed since it went 16-3 en route to the 2024 title. The Celtics enter every game with a mathematical advantage because they take (and make) by far the most 3-pointers in the league. And they were one of two teams, along with the Thunder, to place in the top five in both offensive and defensive rating this season. But Boston has more than just a system -- it relies on a collection of tremendous talent, with five elite starters and top-notch role players in and Sixth Man of the Year . With 's eliminated in the first round, has an ironclad case as the best remaining player in the Eastern Conference playoffs. And Tatum himself has leveled up since earning a ring in 2024 (but not winning Finals MVP). After missing Game 2 of the Celtics' first-round romp against the , Tatum closed that series with 36, 37 and 35 points across the final three games -- essentially scoring at will against the NBA's No. 2 defense. Even after losing Game 1 against the on Monday, Boston is still a heavy favorite to reach the conference finals, as the Celtics dominated the Knicks in a regular-season sweep and would have done the same in Game 1 if not for rotten shooting luck. According to GeniusIQ tracking, the Celtics underperformed their quantified shot probability -- which measures a team's expected effective field goal percentage based on factors like shot location and defender distance -- by 15% in Game 1, which is their worst mark in any game all season. If Boston's shooters had performed like they had in the regular season, the Celtics would have scored an extra 30 points in Game 1. In other words, the Celtics shoot better going forward. And when they do, they'll take another step toward becoming the first team since the Kevin Durant-era Warriors to repeat as champions. is the best player in the world, and the formula that delivered the Nuggets the 2023 championship still works, as his historic 40-point, 22-rebound, 6-assist effort in Game 1 against Oklahoma City demonstrated. But Jokic can't do it all himself, and if Denver is going to win its second title in three years, his supporting cast will need to uphold its end of the bargain. That's working well enough so far: has already made multiple game-winning shots, and 's efficient 43-point outburst in Game 5 in the first round is for any player this postseason. Denver is as potent as ever when its best players are on the court. The Murray-Jokic pick-and-roll remains unguardable, producing a scorching 1.35 points per play this postseason, according to GeniusIQ. In the playoffs, the Nuggets' starting lineup has a plus-12.9 net rating. That lineup with in .'s place is plus-23.8. The Nuggets will have to contend with tired legs as the playoffs continue: The team has a shallow rotation and survived a tough seven-game series against the Clippers before meeting the Thunder gauntlet. But that factor hasn't slowed the 2023 champions yet. In Game 1 against the Thunder, the Nuggets scored 71 second-half points. And in the two teams' last meeting of the regular season, in March, Jokic and Murray combined for 69 points while the Nuggets made 56% of their 3-point attempts (18-for-32). They won't stay that hot every night, but they clearly have the potential to torch the league's best defense. If Denver can get past Oklahoma City, it can beat anyone. It would help, though, if the Warriors beat the Timberwolves on the other side of the West bracket, because Minnesota beat Denver in all four regular-season matchups after winning Game 7 on the Nuggets' home floor last spring. It's difficult to imagine the Knicks breaking through for their first title since 1973 -- even after they pulled off an improbable comeback win in Boston on Monday. The Celtics would have claimed Game 1 if not for terrible shooting luck, and they swept the regular-season series. Moreover, New York just struggled to outlast the sixth-seeded in the first round. The Knicks' combined margin of victory across their four wins in the first round was just 17 points, compared to 122 for Cleveland, 66 for Boston and 54 for Indiana. But New York's playoff run thus far, led by Clutch Player of the Year , offers one indication of how the team could scratch and claw its way to the title in close games. More clutch heroics from Brunson & Co. would pave a path to a Knicks title, but so would some external luck. After all, New York's playoff run was cut short due to excessive injuries last year. Why couldn't the Knicks be on the opposite side of that equation this postseason? New York is still the underdog against Boston, but Tatum and have already missed games this postseason, is nursing a knee injury and left Game 1 early because of a lingering illness. The Celtics are deeper and more talented than the Knicks, but this matchup would look a lot more even if Boston were down one star and had others hampered due to injury. And if the Knicks could sneak by a hypothetically injury-addled Celtics squad at the same time that Indiana upset Cleveland, then New York would have home-court advantage in the conference finals and a serious chance at snapping the franchise's 52-year title drought. What looked like a magical season days ago has quickly turned into a disaster for Cleveland, as injuries and the Pacers conspire to beat the East's top seed. missed the first two games against Indiana; and missed Game 2; and sank a game-winning 3-pointer to bury the Cavaliers in a 2-0 hole. So, how does Cleveland climb out and get back on track for a title? The most important step is to get healthy. The short-handed Cavaliers led for nearly all of Game 2, thanks to 's 48 points, but that's not a repeatable plan, especially with how exhausted Mitchell and looked at the end of the game. Cleveland needs Mobley's size, Garland's playmaking and Hunter's shooting, to say nothing of the added depth that trio provides, to have a chance at a comeback. Other signs are in Cleveland's favor. The Cavaliers will probably shoot better in the coming games, as they ranked second in the regular season with a 38% 3-point mark and nailed 44% in their first-round sweep of the but are down at 26% through two games against the Pacers. On the other end, the Pacers' 47% 3-point mark thus far will almost certainly regress. If the injured stars return -- an extra off day before Game 3 will help -- and the shot luck evens out, then Cleveland actually has a shot to overcome its deficit, even with the Pacers hosting Games 3 and 4. It won't be easy for the Cavaliers, but five previous teams have won a playoff series despite losing the first two games at home, most recently the 2020-21 against Dallas. Mapping out the rest of the Cavaliers' playoff path past the conference semifinals seems overly optimistic at this point -- but a full-strength Cleveland squad won 64 games with the NBA's second-best point differential this season. That team can win it all, as long as it gets past Indiana. But time is running out. The Timberwolves burst into the playoffs with a 17-4 record in their final 21 regular-season games, then handily upset the in the first round. Minnesota's stifling defense held a team with two of the best offensive players in NBA history -- and -- below 100 points in three of five games. Between ascending in his superstardom, playing by far the best playoff basketball of his career, looking like the 3-and-D archetype, and starting-caliber players in , and coming off the bench, Minnesota is blessed with excellent shooting and size across the board. Even though it lost to a mostly Curry-less Warriors squad in Game 1, odds should lean dramatically in Minnesota's favor if the league's all-time 3-point king is ruled out for multiple games or for the series. But the Timberwolves themselves need to shoot better from deep to advance further in the playoffs. They beat the Lakers despite a 32% mark from distance as a team, after making 38% of their 3s (fourth in the NBA) in the regular season, and Minnesota started 0-for-16 from 3 and made just five in Game 1 against Golden State. In particular, DiVincenzo, Alexander-Walker and have combined to shoot a ghastly 21% from deep (17-for-82) this postseason, and at least one of them needs to hit open looks to give Edwards a proper backcourt partner in clutch time. It would also help Minnesota if Jokic could pull off some magic and upset the Thunder, as Minnesota has owned the Nuggets over the past season. But the Timberwolves are brimming with confidence, and they have the athleticism and defensive chops to make any opponent's life miserable across a seven-game series. Last season, the Timberwolves took a huge leap forward, reaching the conference finals before running out of steam. They might know how to pace themselves better now. That's a scary prospect for any team that might stand in their way.",

• "content": "SpaceX’s Starlink constellation expanded with a Falcon 9 launch on May 6, strengthening its role in global connectivity as demand surges and competition intensifies. The recent Falcon 9 launch is called SpaceX’s Starlink 6-93 mission.SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket carried 28 Starlink satellites, adding to a network of over 7,200 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). It lifted off at 9:17 p.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Launch Complex-40 in Florida.Starlink’s critical role in connectivity was evident during a historic blackout across Spain and Portugal, where a power outage exposed weaknesses in traditional telecom networks. Mobile and internet users turned to Starlink in record numbers, driving a 35% usage surge. The Iberian Peninsula’s reliance on Starlink underscored its ability to provide reliable internet access when terrestrial systems falter. The satellite broadband market is heating up. Amazon’s Project Kuiper has been pitted against SpaceX’s Starlink and telecom giants like AT&T and T-Mobile. Kuiper’s focus on underserved rural areas is similar to Starlink’s mission. However, SpaceX’s constellation is far ahead of the competition. Global interest in satellite communications is rising, driven by strategic and commercial needs.https://t.co/M3UMUtreJU— TESLARATI (@Teslarati) May 7, 2025Geopolitical shifts are also shaping the landscape. For instance, Ukraine is exploring Starlink alternatives with the European Union, while the German military, Bundeswehr, plans to build its own constellation for independent communications. Similar to Amazon’s Kuiper project, Ukraine, the EU, and Germany’s efforts face challenges in matching Starlink’s scale and operational maturity.SpaceX’s latest launch from one of its two Space Coast facilities reinforces Starlink’s lead in delivering broadband to remote and crisis-affected regions. The Falcon 9’s precise deployment ensures continued growth of the constellation, serving a growing base of consumers, businesses, and governments worldwide. As global demand for satellite connectivity surges, SpaceX’s Starlink 6-93 mission highlights its pivotal role in bridging connectivity gaps. Starlink’s expansion positions it as a cornerstone of the evolving satellite communications landscape, balancing innovation with geopolitical and market challenges. The post SpaceX expands Starlink constellation amid surging global demand appeared first on TESLARATI.",

      • "content": "While some companies, including Spotify , Amazon , and Patreon , have been quick to jump at the opportunity to add external payment links to their apps, Netflix is taking a slower approach. As reported by The Verge , Netflix’s Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim had the following to say in a call with the press on Wednesday: “We’re monitoring that situation very closely, and we don’t have anything more to share at this time. But we’ll just continue to abide by the App Store policies until we hear more about how to best implement any changes going forward.” Following an injunction in the Epic v. Apple case last week , Apple was forced to update its App Store Guidelines to allow developers to link to external payment methods without any fees or special entitlements. For example, Spotify has added the ability to easily subscribe to its service and upgrade from free to paid plans. Amazon updated its iOS app yesterday with a “Get Book” button that lets users jump directly to the Amazon website to complete their purchases. For Netflix, the App Store changes would allow it to advertise prices for its plans and use more robust links that take users directly to their account management pages. Apple, meanwhile, says that it strongly disagrees with the court’s decision. While it is complying with the ruling in the interim, it has also already filed an appeal .

      • "content": "State planning officials have given the go-ahead for the $135 million redevelopment of Perth Hockey Stadium, revealing detailed plans of what the future home of national hockey in Australia will look like. The development application for the upgrade, submitted by the State Government, was approved by the WA Planning Commission on Wednesday after being endorsed by the Town of Victoria Park. The major transformation of the Hockey Centre at Curtin University in Bentley will involve the demolition of the Perth Hockey Stadium to make way for a new three-storey stadium, featuring 1000 fixed seats and facilities including changing rooms, a kitchen, a bar, and function rooms for club and community competitions and events. The stadium will also house Australia’s High Performance Hockey Program. Three new pitches will be built, bringing the total to four, two of which will meet international standards and be capable of hosting major events such as the Hockey World Cup. The centre’s northern pitch and its grandstand will be retained. The site’s maximum capacity is expected to increase from 6000 to 10,000 spectators for major events, positioning Perth as a potential contender to host future Hockey World Cups, supported by the addition of upgraded broadcast facilities. A state-of-the-art two-storey indoor centre featuring two courts and administration spaces will also be built as part of the redevelopment, serving as the new headquarters for Hockey Australia and Hockey WA. Hockey WA has been based at Curtin University for more than 40 years and it’s hoped the redevelopment will ensure the high performance hockey program will remain in Perth for another four decades. “The proposed works have been designed to a high specification and of international standard that will secure a high performance hockey program in Perth for the next 40-plus years and complement its existing use,” the application report said. “Hockey WA also has a strategic partnership with Curtin University to identify research and improve competitiveness that is expected to continue through existing and additional hockey facilities at the university.” During the project’s public consultation period, 15 submissions objected to the proposal, with concerns primarily focused on tree loss as 107 trees will make way for the development. The application said the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions had acknowledged the expected loss of mature pine trees but said the clearing was relatively small and not significant enough to warrant referral to Federal agencies. The project will be completed in two stages, with stage one covering the bulk of the work. Stage two will involve the new south and east pitches, and its associated landscaping, and pedestrian connections being completed. A ground lease between Curtin University and VenuesWest, which also manages Optus Stadium, RAC Arena and HBF Park, has been finalised. VenuesWest will own the facility on behalf of the State once it is built, with the lease set to start in 2028.",

      • "content": "There is no place more joyous than a garden center in May. The shelves are full of annuals, vegetables, and perennials ready to go home with you. Gardeners everywhere are waiting with bated breath, trying to find the perfect day to get plants in the ground. Pops of color are emerging as tulips, irises, peonies, and lilacs fill yards. What you do this month will determine how successful your summer garden is, so strap into your overalls, grab your sunhat and spade, and get outside. Let's install a summer garden. I'll go over the maintenance tasks you should tackle first, then get into the details on what you should plant and how to do it. Perform a few garden maintenance tasks first Your watering systems may have taken a hit during winter, so it's vital to check each line before you turn on irrigation for the summer. Often, I've found that I am the problem, having nicked lines while weeding or digging around in spring. Ensure that the controller is working by standing outside, testing each zone and walking around to check each end point. You can usually hear a leak, so keep an ear out for loud gushing or hissing while also scanning visually. If you use a hose bib setup, check that as well. We've had a hot spell early on the west coast, meaning my irrigation went on earlier than ever this year. (For plants growing in full sun, water in the morning and aim for 1 to 2 inches of water per week.) Your established beds can benefit from a layer of compost, which will act as a general fertilizer, as well as create volume back in your beds if they’ve experienced erosion during the winter. Follow the compost with a layer of mulch . Spending this time spreading the compost and mulch will give you the opportunity to size up each part of your garden, so take notes as you go for which areas need weeding, are experiencing pests, or have plants that look like they might not have survived the winter. Shrubs, trees, and vines A number of shrubs go through blooming cycles in spring, like lilac and forsythia. Once they’ve bloomed, you can prune them back, and in some cases, like lilac, this may trigger a second bloom later in the season. In either case, it will take one fall task off your list and keep the garden looking tidier. This is a good time to plant new woody shrubs and trees—the weather is mild and the ground should be soft from the rains. For your existing trees, make sure you feed them with a fertilizer that is appropriate for them this month. Your garden center can help identify which fertilizer is best for the trees you have. Each of these trees will be creating shoots this month, and you should prune them back as necessary to maintain the shape of the tree and to keep fruit to an amount the tree can reasonably support. Ensure you are only using clean pruners or loppers—carry diluted bleach or Lysol with you in a spray bottle while outside. Cleaning your tools in between plants ensures that you do not transmit virus, fungus or disease between plants. Finally, climbing perennial vines like clematis, roses, and honeysuckle should be coming out of their slumber at this point, and you’ll want to ensure you’re supporting them by tying them loosely to their trellises as they climb. Annual flowers It is finally time to put some annuals in the ground, which provide pops of color and can last all summer if you treat them right. Garden centers should be full of annuals at this point of the year, including petunias, lobelia, marigolds, and begonias. Annuals are a bit more tender than perennials, so you want to wait until you are past the risk of freezing to plant. Annuals can fill an area with color in the space and time between perennials blooming, and are ideal for window boxes and planters, where it might be hard for annuals to survive the winter. Most hanging baskets have annuals for the same reason—they’re too exposed for perennials or anything else to survive winter. Make sure that the beds you're planting into have a slow release fertilizer like Osmacote in them, and that they will get regularly watered. Perennial flowers Most people will have tulips in bloom or just completed at this point—remember not to cut them down after bloom. Tulips need their leaves in order to come back next year, so let them compost in place. Once the foliage has yellowed, it’s OK to divide or move the bulbs. Once the tulip has bloomed, it’s a great time for a bulb fertilizer, so they’ll be strong next year. You can also plant summer bulbs like dahlias and cannas now, if the risk of frost is gone. If you didn’t get new perennials planted in April, you can still do so now, or divide the perennials you have. The ground should be very workable now, and you may be noticing which plants are ready to be divided as you move about the garden. If you’d like them to bloom this summer, you’ll want to get this task done in May. As you plant, ensure you’re using slow release fertilizer in the ground where you plant. This time of year, be vigilant in checking your garden center, grocer, and anywhere else that has a \"sad plant shelf\" (SPS). Stores will discount these plants that don't look especially happy at 50% off or more, and because they're perennials, that's a deal. Plant them as you would any other, and while they might not come back this year, they will next year. Delphiniums and agastache are my favorite SPS finds. Your roses need a spring fertilizer and might need some shaping at this point or help attaching to the trellis. Look for signs of stress or pests and ensure you’re treating them with appropriate treatments. Your garden center can help. Vegetables Onto the main event! Gardeners across the country wait for the precise moment to put their tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants into the ground, and sometime this month, that day will arrive. Here on the west coast, it's usually Mother's Day, but what you're actually waiting for is steady overnight temps over 50 degrees. If in doubt, join a local gardening group, because this will be the main topic of conversation this time of year. That means it's time to begin hardening off vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants as appropriate. Perennial vegetables like asparagus and artichokes should be active now. Remember to harvest asparagus daily, taking only spears that are larger than your pinky. Once spears become thinner, it’s time to leave the plant alone for next year. Watch your artichoke plants for ants or aphid infestations, which may be sprayed off, but will return without further treatment like neem oil or nearby trap flowers like nasturtiums. Both asparagus beds and artichokes will benefit from a spring fertilizer. By mid to late May, almost all regions should be planting their warm weather crops. Tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, but also beans, corn, cucumbers, and everything else. Your beans and corn can be direct seeded, as can melon, pumpkin, and both winter and summer squash, but using starts will give you a leg up for the summer. If you planted potatoes in the spring, it’s likely time to hill up earth around the sprouts. Thin out your strawberry beds of runners and give your strawberry beds a dusting of fertilizer. Strawberry plants can either focus their energy on producing these runners or on fruit, but aren’t very good at doing both. Each spring the beds must be thinned to create better and larger fruit. You can give away the runners or plant them elsewhere. Pest control Reduce snail and slug populations by putting out traps and going on regular evening hunts. Doing this now, as the rains cease, will greatly reduce problems later this summer. Hang pheromone traps in your fruit trees now, which will control pests this summer and protect your fruit.",

      • "content": "Norway is looking to expand its oil and gas production with a new licensing round in frontier areas, with parliament directing the country’s minority government to facilitate the event. Reuters that the proposal to restart licensing rounds for oil and gas came—unsurprisingly—from the Conservatives but it gained majority support thanks to Norway’s centrist party, which left the governing coalition earlier this year, putting it on shakier grounds as a minority government. Norway has become the largest supplier of pipeline natural gas to Europe and boasts the biggest sovereign wealth fund in the world thanks to its oil and gas; however, it also has the highest per-capita ownership of electric cars and a most ambitious transition state. Even so, Norway has acknowledged it cannot give up oil and gas anytime soon. Earlier this year, the government stakes in as many as 53 oil and gas licenses in its latest annual licensing round despite increasingly loud opposition from various environmentalist groups. “If we are to uphold a stable production in the years to come, we must explore more and invest more,” Energy Minister Terje Aslund said in January when the new licenses were awarded. Norway has been fighting natural depletion and fewer new discoveries—alongside climate groups. Thanks to the government support that the oil and gas industry has received, companies active in the field said at the end of 2024 they planned to spend a record amount of money this year, beating a record set in 2024. At close to $24.7 billion, the planned 2025 total investment amount exceeded expectations, the local energy industry association said in December, as by Reuters. Some of the increase was a result of rising inflation but the rest was motivated by more drilling at both existing fields and new deposits. By Irina Slav for Oilprice.com",

      • "content": "TikTok has told advertisers that it’s in the US to stay, stating that “we are here” and “are absolutely confident in our platform and confident in the future of this platform.” The statement came after Trump indicated that he would extend the current enforcement pause again if needed, despite that fact that this is probably unlawful ... A quick recap Under a law passed by Congress, TikTok has been banned from the US since January 19 . The law has a clause which permitted the date to be pushed back under certain conditions, but those conditions were not met. Trump instead issued a ( probably unlawful ) executive order to pause enforcement for 75 days. Apple didn’t accept Trump’s assurance and kept it out of the App Store , until the company was later guaranteed immunity by the DOJ . On Sunday, Trump indicated that he would be willing to further extend that pause. TikTok claims it is in the US to stay The New York Times reports on a presentation given yesterday to the company’s biggest US advertisers. “TikTok is here — we are here,” Khartoon Weiss, the company’s vice president of global business solutions, told a packed warehouse of advertisers on Tuesday in Manhattan. “We are absolutely confident in our platform and confident in the future of this platform,” she declared. Present at the event were hundreds of advertisers, including Unilever, a giant whose brands include Ben & Jerry’s, Comfort, Domestos, Dove, Graze, Knorr, Lynx, Lifebouy, Lux, Magnum, Persil/Omo, Sunlight, and Wall’s. TikTok also pitched a number of new tools for advertisers. The company promoted new tools that would let marketers run their messages alongside viral trends, and it pitched advertisers on the additional exposure they could get from running ads on TikTok during the Super Bowl. Ms. Weiss also told marketers that the company was eager to develop ways for advertisers to capitalize on search queries, as people increasingly use TikTok as an alternative to popular search engines like Google. There was no reference to Trump’s TikTok America plan , which appears to have been touted without any discussion with the company.",

      • "content": "In December this year incumbent Mohamed Ben Sulayem is seeking a second terms as FIA president. To win another four-year term, he’ll face a democratic election, and this is how it will work. Every four years, the FIA holds presidential elections at its General Assembly, the supreme decision-making body of the FIA that generally convenes once a year. The General Assembly is composed of national sporting authorities and automotive clubs representing the 245 member organisations across 149 countries. It handles agenda points brought forward by the FIA’s two World Councils (World Motor Sport Council and World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism), as well as items coming from the Senate. It also votes in all major FIA officials, including the president. The next general assembly, and with it the next presidential election, will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 12 December. General Exclusive: Carlos Sainz Sr considering run for FIA president Who can run for president? Much like in a political election, the presidential candidate does not run alone. Presidential candidates run on a list comprising of several key positions across both the sport and mobility side. The prospective candidate runs alongside a president of the senate and must also pick a deputy president and seven vice-presidents for sport, as well as a deputy president and seven vice-presidents for automobile, mobility and tourism. That number of vice presidents ensures all regions are represented, with two representatives for Europe and one each of the MENA, Africa, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific regions. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President, FIA Photo by: Zak Mauger / Motorsport Images The candidates for the presidential and deputy presidential roles must be under 70 years of age on the day of the election - down from 75 previously - and an FIA president may not serve more than three four-year terms for a maximum duration of 12 years. For a list to be eligible in the first place, it must have the support of a certain number of sporting and mobility members. How does the voting work? Each member country receives a maximum of 24 votes, 12 for sport and 12 for mobility. Some countries only have one batch of votes as they only have an eligible member organisation on either the sport or mobility side. Voting in the General Assembly is carried out by secret ballot, with the votes counted in private by the FIA's legal department under supervision from observers nominated by the assembly. Members can either vote for their preferred candidate or abstain. The candidate with an absolute majority in a first voting round or a simple majority in the second round is elected as president. Incumbent president Ben Sulayem defeated Graham Stoker at the last election in 2021, succeeding Jean Todt in the role. Ben Sulayem received 61.62% of the votes to Stoker’s 36.62%, with 1.76% of the members abstaining. Ben Sulayem, a 14-time FIA Middle East Rally Champion, held a number of senior FIA roles before being elected. Officially, no candidate has opposed him yet as he seeks a second term, but Motorsport.com understands former rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr was approached and is considering running against Ben Sulayem to be the next FIA president. Formula 1 Susie Wolff sets record straight after FIA president rumours Ben Sulayem came under intense scrutiny over the past few years over his running of the governing body, with concerns being raised by Motorsport UK president Dave Richards over the body's governance. Numerous senior FIA staff also left the organisation in recent years, including Ben Sulayem's elected deputy president for sport, Robert Reid.",

      • "content": "Hamas insisted Wednesday on a \"comprehensive\" agreement to end its war with Israel, as rescuers said Israeli bombardment of Gaza killed at least 26 people amid a growing humanitarian catastrophe. A two-month ceasefire in the war collapsed in March, with Israel resuming intense strikes and imposing a total aid blockade on the Palestinian territory. Israel demands the return of all hostages seized in Hamas's unprecedented October 2023 attack and Hamas's disarmament, which the group has rejected as a \"red line\". Hamas has consistently demanded that a truce deal must lead to the war's end, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and a surge in humanitarian aid. \"Hamas and the resistance factions insist on reaching a comprehensive agreement and a full package to end the war and aggression, along with a roadmap for the day after,\" political bureau member Bassem Naim told AFP Wednesday. \"There are desperate attempts ahead of (US President Donald) Trump's visit to the region... to force through a partial deal that would return some Israeli captives in exchange for a limited number of days of food and water -- without any guarantees from any party to actually end the war,\" he said. Trump is due in the Gulf next week for talks with the heads of state of powerful monarchies. Israel this week drew widespread condemnation over its plans for an expanded Gaza offensive, which an official said would entail the \"conquest\" of the Palestinian territory. Before that phase begins, a senior Israeli security source had said that the timing of troop deployments allowed a \"window of opportunity\" for a possible hostage deal coinciding with Trump's Middle East trip. \"We want to try and get as many hostages saved as possible,\" Trump said at the White House, without elaborating. In Gaza, rescuers said strikes killed 26 people, 15 in a strike on a school. \"Our teams retrieved 15 martyrs and 10 injured individuals after Israeli occupation aircraft targeted the Al-Karama school, which shelters displaced persons... in the Tuffah neighbourhood, east of Gaza City,\" spokesman Mahmud Basal told AFP. He had earlier reported a toll of 11 killed in strikes on the territory. One strike hit a house in the southern city of Khan Yunis, where eight members of the Al-Qidra family were killed and 12 wounded, Bassal said. The ages of the dead ranged from two to 54, he added. AFP footage from Khan Yunis's Nasser Hospital showed wounded children crying on hospital beds while bodies covered in blankets arrived in ambulances. \"They were sleeping and the house collapsed on them,\" said Abir Shehab, adding her brother had been killed. \"We die of hunger, we die of war, we die of fear, we die of everything, and the whole world stands by and watches us die,\" she said. Israel's military did not immediately comment on the strikes. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Wednesday at least 2,545 people have been killed since Israel resumed its campaign, bringing the war's overall toll to 52,653. Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Militants also abducted 251 people, 58 of whom are still being held in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead. On Tuesday, Hamas said it was pointless to continue ceasefire talks with Israel, accusing it of waging a \"hunger war\" on Gaza. France's President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that the situation in Gaza was \"the most critical we have ever seen\". In Madrid, Spain, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and Slovenia in a joint statement said they \"firmly reject any demographic or territorial change in Gaza\". UN rights chief Volker Turk voiced concerns Wednesday that Israel's plans to expand its offensive aim to create conditions threatening Palestinians' \"continued existence\" in Gaza. \"There is no reason to believe that doubling down on military strategies, which, for a year and eight months, have not led to a durable resolution, including the release of all hostages, will now succeed,\" he said. \"Instead, expanding the offensive on Gaza will almost certainly cause further mass displacement, more deaths and injuries of innocent civilians, and the destruction of Gaza's little remaining infrastructure.\" Palestinian prime minister Mohammad Mustafa, not affiliated to Hamas, urged the world to put a stop to the \"deliberate humanitarian crime\" of famine, which he said was being perpetrated in Gaza. \"We appeal to the conscience of humanity. Do not let the children of Gaza starve to death,\" he said.",
