      • "content": "NEW YORK : Global stocks dipped and gold hit a record high on Thursday in the wake of the latest tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration that expanded the trade war to auto imports. Trump late on Wednesday announced 25 per cent tariffs on all vehicles and foreign-made auto parts imported into the United States, scheduled to take effect on April 3. This weighed on Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's KOSPI. Countries around the globe threatened retaliatory levies. U.S. stocks oscillated between gains and losses while automakers slumped, although electric vehicle makers Tesla and Rivian rallied as all of their production is located within the U.S.. General Motors tumbled more than 6 per cent, while Ford lost about 3 per cent, reflecting concerns about the impact on their supply chains. U.S.-listed shares of Stellantis dipped roughly 1 per cent. \"The pendulum that seems to be swinging right now for markets is initially having a knee-jerk reaction to the worst possible kind of expression of whatever's announced, and then slowly digesting the fact that it might not be as bad as feared and it might not even be as announced because it's part of a broader negotiation,\" said Eric Theoret, FX strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 120.77 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 42,333.38, the S&P 500 fell 9.03 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 5,702.48 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 41.37 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 17,857.20. European stocks closed lower, with weakness in shares of the continent's top carmakers. Volkswagen was down 1.26 per cent, BMW off 2.55 per cent and Mercedes-Benz was 2.69 per cent lower. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe fell 1.77 points, or 0.21 per cent, to 844.15. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.44 per cent to 546.31, a two-week closing low. Tariffs and their effect on the global economy, as well as their potential to delay Federal Reserve rate cuts, have weighed on stocks in recent weeks, though they have shown signs of stabilizing lately. Reflecting investors' caution, spot gold was 1.19 per cent higher at $3,055.33 an ounce, after hitting a record $3,059.30. Goldman Sachs raised its gold price forecast on Wednesday to $3,300, citing stronger-than-expected exchange-traded fund inflows and sustained central bank demand. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, dipped 0.35 per cent to 104.27, with the euro up 0.42 per cent at $1.0797. Versus the dollar, the Mexican peso weakened 0.98 per cent to 20.324 while the Canadian dollar softened 0.29 per cent to C$1.43 as both countries are expected to be heavily impacted by the auto tariffs. Trump has announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on all countries on April 2. U.S. data showed the labor market remains on solid footing, although the impact of Trump's tariff policy and the aggressive cutting of federal workers by billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has yet to show an outsized impact. Other data showed the economy grew at a slightly more solid pace in the fourth quarter than previously estimated. The benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury note yield rose 2.5 basis points to 4.363 per cent. While the yield on the seven-year note was higher after a soft auction of $44 billion of the paper. U.S. crude settled 0.39 per cent higher at $69.92 a barrel and Brent settled at $74.03 per barrel, up 0.33 per cent on the day, as investors assessed the ramifications of the latest escalation in the trade war.",

      • "content": "LONDON : Yuki Tsunoda's Red Bull Formula One seat swap with Liam Lawson leaves both with plenty to prove and still facing considerable career uncertainty. Tsunoda, in his fifth season and promoted from Racing Bulls on Thursday to partner four times world champion Max Verstappen from next week's Japanese round, will happily take on a task that has proved a poisoned chalice for others. The Japanese should see it as a potential lifeline, with the 24-year-old's tenure at the Red Bull junior team already at risk when his backers Honda depart for Aston Martin and a new engine era in 2026. An eventual return to Racing Bulls, as New Zealander Lawson has, is unlikely to be an option for him. Tsunoda must score substantial points towards the constructors' championship and support Verstappen's bid for a fifth successive drivers' title as the basic requirements for any longer-term future. Lawson will meanwhile be fighting to keep his F1 career alive at Racing Bulls, a conveyor belt for talent within the Red Bull young driver stable. The 23-year-old needs to reset, focus and show his worth against French rookie Isack Hadjar, after the huge psychological blow of lasting only two races alongside Verstappen, and that will not be easy either. The Kiwi is still essentially a rookie, starting a season this year for the first time albeit one with 11 previous races under his belt as a stand-in for now-departed Australian Daniel Ricciardo. The team also have British-Swedish youngster Arvid Lindblad waiting in the wings, with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and consultant Helmut Marko rating the 17-year-old particularly highly. Lindblad has the points required for a super-licence and will qualify on age when he turns 18 in August. \"The junior team... is to find new talents. We are not looking for a new Max. We are looking for a new champion. I think the next one which looks really promising is Arvid Lindblad,\" Marko told the Inside Line F1 podcast in December. Verstappen could also shake things up again if he decides to move elsewhere, however unlikely that looks at present. The Dutch 27-year-old is under contract at Red Bull to the end of 2028 but there has been continual speculation about his future, with performance clauses potentially opening the door for him to go elsewhere.",

      • "content": "\"There are no 'winners' in the absolute - only relative winners, with a significant amount of cost set to be introduced into the industry,\" Barclays analysts said in a note, calling Trump's tariffs a \"more draconian outcome than most anticipated.\" Proponents of Trump's efforts, including the US United Auto Workers, say the United States should be focused on boosting domestic production, though the process of moving facilities would likely take years, during which costs will rise and production could drop. The American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit Three automakers, said late on Wednesday that \"US Automakers are committed to President Trump’s vision of increasing automotive production and jobs in the US and will continue to work with the Administration on durable policies that help Americans.\" The AAPC added that it is \"critical\" that the tariffs are implemented in a way that avoids price hikes for consumers. It may take some time before dealers and consumers see major shortages. Dealers had an average of 89 days of supply on their lots in early March, according to Cox Automotive data. Some consumers have been trying to secure purchases before prices start to rise. TURMOIL FOR GLOBAL AUTO COMPANIES Europe's auto industry called for a transatlantic deal to avert the tariffs. Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Continental lost 5.5 billion euros (US$5.93 billion) in combined market value on Thursday. Carmakers must now decide whether to localize more production in the US, swallow the costs of tariffs, or pass them to consumers. Some, including Volvo Cars, Volkswagen's Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai, have already said they will move some production. Ferrari, which makes all of its cars in Italy, said it would raise prices to 10 per cent on some models. French car parts supplier Valeo said it would have no choice but to hike prices. Germany's BLG Group, the port logistics provider for one of the world's busiest auto shipping terminals in Bremerhaven, said it was planning for a 15 per cent reduction in traffic as a result of the tariffs, which will take effect on cars from Apr 3 and auto parts from May 3. HITS TO US PRODUCTION Automakers in North America have enjoyed free trade status since the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, which encouraged the development of a highly integrated auto supply chain between the US, Canada and Mexico. Trump's revised 2020 US-Mexico-Canada Agreement imposed new rules to spur regional content production. The tariffs will have an effect on production almost immediately, Cox Automotive said. It expects disruption to \"virtually all\" North American vehicle output by mid-April, cutting output by roughly 20,000 cars a day, or about 30 per cent of production. The White House said Trump's tariffs would \"protect and strengthen the US automotive sector\" more than previous trade deals. After clamping tariffs of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada in early March, Trump allowed a one-month reprieve for vehicles produced in compliance with the terms of the USMCA, but the new rules do not extend that.",

      • "content": "LONDON :Rugby Football Union CEO Bill Sweeney convincingly survived a vote of no-confidence at Twickenham on Thursday as a grass-roots revolt failed to get close to the majority of votes necessary to trigger his removal. The motion to remove him got 206 votes, with 466 against and 36 abstentions. A counter-motion presented by the RFU that would give the community game more independence to run the game at local level was supported by 554 votes, with 127 against and 24 abstentions. The no-confidence motion was brought by the Whole Game Union (WGU), which was set up by the Championship and Rugby Football Referees’ Union (RFRU) as a backlash to the revelations last November that Sweeney had earned 1.1 million pounds ($1.42 million) through a salary of 742,000 and a long-term incentive plan (LTIP) bonus of 358,000. Six other RFU executives shared a bonus pot of 1.3 million pounds. These payouts came as the RFU announced record losses of almost 40 million pounds and after the governing body had made more than 40 people redundant. RFU chairman Tom Ilube resigned soon after the accounts were published and former England captain and World Rugby head Bill Beaumont stepped in as an interim replacement. Sweeney and Beaumont then went on a nationwide roadshow of clubs, giving the RFU's side of things while listening to members' complaints. An independent review last month said that the bonus scheme was \"appropriate and well-reasoned\", although it was also critical of the RFU's communications. After little over an hour of debate on Thursday the voting - both in-house and remote - revealed that Sweeney was safe. \"I am pleased to see such a decisive outcome,\" Beaumont said. \"I trust those who supported the motion will honour and respect the result. \"We are listening and we are taking action. This is not a time to argue, but to pull together. The time for division is past. Now is the time to unite behind an opportunity to renew English rugby. \"Let us put behind this period of in-fighting and modernise the union. Let’s get back to focusing on the many positives in our game.\" ($1 = 0.7720 pounds)",

      • "content": "\"REASSURANCE FORCE\" There appeared to be consensus around the table at the Elysee Palace that sanctions imposed against Russia should not be weakened, and rather intensified, until there is peace. \"There was complete clarity that now is not the time for the lifting of sanctions, quite the contrary - what we discussed is how we can increase sanctions to support the US initiative to bring Russia to the table,\" British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said alongside Zelensky. In a separate briefing, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said lifting sanctions would be a \"grave mistake\" and \"makes no sense\" without a truce. Zelensky criticised \"very dangerous signals\" on that possibility, pointing especially to Saudi Arabia. As well as boosting Ukraine's own armed forces, a key pillar of ensuring security and preventing further Russian invasions could be to deploy European troops to Ukraine, although until now it has been far from clear how this could happen. Macron said after the summit that France and Britain were leading efforts to send a \"reassurance force\" to Ukraine after any end to the fighting. \"It does not have unanimity today, but we do not need unanimity to do this,\" he added, saying a Franco-British delegation would head to Ukraine in the coming days for talks. \"MANY QUESTIONS\" Macron emphasised that members of such a force would not be peacekeepers deployed on the front line or any kind of substitute for the Ukrainian army. Also, he said, not all of Ukraine's European allies would be represented in the force, with some states not \"having the capacity\" and some reluctant due to the \"political context\". The Franco-British delegation would begin talks over where such a force could be deployed. It would have the \"character of deterrence against any potential Russian aggression\", he said. Macron added that the summit agreed that he and Starmer would together \"co-pilot\" Europe's 'coalition of action' for stable and durable peace\". \"REACTION FROM THE US\" Ukraine has offered through the United States a 30-day ceasefire, but Russia has so far failed to respond, with the European allies growing all the more impatient. Underscoring how far apart the sides remain, Ukraine accused Russia on Thursday of violating a US-brokered agreement to refrain from targeting energy infrastructure with an artillery strike that caused a power outage in the city of Kherson. The Ukrainian army, meanwhile, rejected Russian claims it had itself targeted energy sites. \"I think there should be a reaction from the US,\" Zelensky told reporters in Paris, saying that energy facilities had been damaged in a strike Thursday and that it was \"unclear who is monitoring\" the pledges to halt such strikes. Thursday's meeting comes after the White House said Russia and Ukraine had agreed on the contours of a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea during parallel talks with US officials in Saudi Arabia.",

      • "content": "LONDON : Improving trust in anti-doping rules is a priority for the International Tennis Integrity Agency after several high-profile cases last year raised doubts over its processes, CEO Karen Moorhouse said in the ITIA's annual review. Men's world number one Jannik Sinner accepted an immediate three-month ban in February after reaching an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) which appealed against the decision of an independent tribunal to clear him of any wrongdoing after a positive doping test. Poland's five-times Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension in November having tested positive for banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ) which she said was the result of contamination of her sleep medication. The speed with which Sinner and Swiatek's cases were dealt with, and the leniency shown, cast a spotlight on the anti-doping system after former world number one Simona Halep criticised officials for lengthy delays in her own case. \"(The Jannik Sinner) case has invariably raised further questions about the anti-doping process in tennis,\" Moorhouse said in the report published on Thursday. \"We - alongside our funders - are determined to answer them, and drive deeper understanding of the work we do within the sport. \"The complexity of the system is one of the many reasons why it's important that we continue to work together with our members and tennis stakeholders to build trust.\" Accusations of double standards were aimed at the ITIA while 24-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic said there had been a lack of consistency and transparency in the cases while Australian Nick Kyrgios described the Swiatek and Sinner cases as \"disgusting\" for the sport. The Professional Tennis Players' Association (PTPA), which this month filed a lawsuit against tennis's governing bodies, accuses the ITIA of violating players' privacy rights with random drug tests. The ITIA's review highlights a 26 per cent increase in anti-doping tests in 2024 compared to the previous year with 9,151 being carried out. It says educating players about anti-doping rules, especially the risk of contaminated supplements, was a major pillar of its strategy for the next three years. \"The past 12 months has reinforced the challenges involved for players and their support teams,\" ITIA Anti-Doping Senior Director Nicole Sapstead said. \"30 per cent of anti-doping rule violations in tennis over the past 15 years can be attributed to contaminated supplements, and there is work to be done. \"It remains our view that the vast majority of players compete clean, and the largest proportion of TADP (Tennis Anti-Doping Programme) cases involve unintentional doping.\" Sinner, who won his third Grand Slam title at this year's Australian Open despite uncertainty about WADA's appeal, tested positive for anabolic agent clostebol at last year's Indian Wells and Miami tournaments, with the Italian saying it had entered his system from a member of his support team through massages and sports therapy. His ban will end on May 4.",

      • "content": "GENEVA : Nearly a third of species of fungi assessed by an international conservation group are at risk of extinction from threats like deforestation and agricultural expansion, the latest 'Red List' of threatened species showed on Thursday. Fungi - which comprise a scientific \"kingdom\" second only in size to the animal kingdom - play a critical role in a range of functions from decomposition, to mammalian digestion to forest regeneration. For human beings, they also play an important role in making several powerful medicines, including antibiotics, as well as bread and beer. Yet, the role of these yeasts, molds and mushrooms that underpin life on Earth has been \"overlooked and under-appreciated\", said the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is trying to correct that. In its latest 'Red List' which categorises species according to the risks they face, the group said that nearly a third, or 411 of the 1,300 species of fungi it assessed, are at risk of extinction. \"Fungi are crucial to all life. Without fungi, an ecosystem can collapse quickly,\" said Caroline Pollock, Senior Programme Coordinator in IUCN's Red List Unit. Fungi are best known as mushrooms but these are just the fruiting bodies of an organism whose bulk is found underground in a large network of root-like \"mycelia\" structures. Only a fraction of some 2.5 million fungi species thought to exist have been formally identified, meaning that assessing the threats they face has been slow compared to flora and fauna. One of the major challenges they face is that their habitats have been replaced by the expansion of urban areas and agriculture, whose nitrogen and ammonia run-off can also harm them, the IUCN said. At least 198 species listed face extinction because of deforestation, it said. Even in places where rotational forestry is practised, the destruction of old-growth forests sometimes does not allow their fungal colonies to become re-established, it said.",

      • "content": "CAIRO: Palestinian militant groups threatened punishment on Thursday (Mar 27) for \"collaborators\" furthering Israeli goals after the first substantial protests against the war in Gaza and Hamas' rule. Hundreds of Palestinians have rallied in recent days in north and central Gaza, some chanting \"Hamas out\", in a rare show of opposition to the group whose October 2023 raid on Israel triggered a devastating offensive in the enclave. More demonstrations, which have been applauded by Israel's government, were planned for later on Thursday. A statement by the \"Factions of the Resistance\", an umbrella group including Hamas, threatened punishment for leaders of the \"suspicious movement\", which Palestinians took to mean the street marches. \"They persist in blaming the resistance and absolving the occupation, ignoring that the Zionist extermination machine operates nonstop,\" it said. \"Therefore, these suspicious individuals are as responsible as the occupation for the bloodshed of our people and will be treated accordingly.\" Hamas officials have said people have the right to protest but rallies should not be exploited for political ends or to exempt Israel from blame for decades of occupation, conflict and displacement in Palestinian territories. Some protesters reached by Reuters said they took to the streets to voice rejection of continued war, adding that they were exhausted and lacked basics like food and water. \"We are not against the resistance. We are against war. Enough wars, we are tired,\" a resident of Gaza City's Shejaia neighbourhood, which saw protests on Wednesday, told Reuters. \"You can't call people collaborators for speaking up against wars, for wanting to live without bombardment and hunger,\" he added via a chat app. PROTESTS SPREAD Videos on Wednesday, whose authenticity Reuters could not verify, showed protests in Shejaia in the north where the rallies began, but also in the central Gaza areas of Deir Al-Balah, indicating the protests were spreading. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has promised Hamas' total elimination, said the rallies showed its decision to renew the military offensive in Gaza after a ceasefire was working. Hamas police, the group's enforcers, are again off the streets. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz urged Gaza residents to keep expressing their discontent. \"Learn from the residents of Beit Lahia,\" he wrote on X, referring to the first protest. \"Just as they did, demand the removal of Hamas from Gaza and the immediate release of all Israeli hostages - this is the only way to stop the war.\" A Palestinian official with a Hamas-allied militant group said protests were allowed - but not cooperation with Israel. \"Those suspicious figures try to exploit legitimate protests to demand an end to the resistance, which is the same goal as Israel's,\" he told Reuters via a chat app. \"We don't threaten our people, we adore their sacrifices, but there are some suspicious figures who cooperate with the goals of the occupation, they want to exempt the occupation of responsibility and disgrace the resistance.\" More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli campaign in Gaza, Palestinian officials say. It was launched after thousands of Hamas-led gunmen attacked communities in southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Much of the narrow coastal enclave has been reduced to rubble, leaving hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in tents or bombed-out buildings.",

      • "content": "United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is heading to Japan. This visit needs to be more than cordial meetings reaffirming the US-Japan alliance as rock solid and discussing vague improvements with even vaguer timelines for completion. If that’s all it is, he might as well stay home and do it over Zoom. Hegseth should return to the United States able to explain what he accomplished that improves US and Japanese warfighting power – both individually and collectively. He’ll do well to take a list of things the US military needs from the Japanese. US Indo-Pacific Command ( ) presumably has this list. Or at least it should. Secretary Hegseth will also need to speak up, even if people tell him not to. Maybe keep in mind former Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka’s advice to the Americans who were dithering over asking to station an aircraft carrier in in 1970: “Tell us what you need, and don’t back down.” And more recently, a senior Japanese officer said: “Tell us what we’re doing wrong. Only our friends will tell us that.” So don’t just jigger around the edges, aiming for low-hanging fruit such as a few more, and more complex, exercises. What both sides have been doing for the last 25 years has not deterred or even kept pace with a steady Chinese build-up. The PLA went from a force people laughed at to one that operates aircraft carriers east of and south of Japan. It recently sailed a naval task force around , stopping to conduct live-fire training in a show of intimidation and contempt. The China Coast Guard and Navy are leaning on the Japanese in more places, more often, and not just around the . If Hegseth asks Japan for something, he just might get it. There are well-placed officials on the Japanese side who want to move things forward. But windows don’t stay open forever. And one Japanese person describes it as a “race against time.” One hopes that Hegseth’s staff will give him the aforementioned list. But here’s a couple of things I would include. First, consider what the PRC would like the least. That’s a (JSDF) that is equipped and ready for combat – and solidly linked and operating with American forces on a routine basis. So, create a permanent combined US-JSDF task force that is ready to fight. Despite 60+ years of the US-Japan military alliance, such a force has never existed. One idea is to create a Joint Task Force – Nansei Shoto Headquartered in and with Japanese and American staff and naval, air, and ground forces allocated to the joint task force. It would exercise and conduct patrols to defend Japan’s southern islands (the Nansei Shoto) that are under constant Chinese encroachment. It would cover Russian incursions, too. With a little effort, this could be moving within three months. Politically impossible? Only if you want it to be. A permanent force with a real-world mission has a different dynamic than the “exercise mentality” that comes with conducting periodic, lovingly scripted exercises together. Moreover, a Japan Task Force – Nansei Shoto means more than declarations of “rock-solidness.” It might also be a stepping stone towards a US-Japan joint operational headquarters in Japan – covering the entire country. Plus, it might sidestep (for now) the immediate challenge of turning US Forces Japan (USFJ) into a warfighting command. That seems to be causing undue difficulty for the US side and attracting attention from the Department of Government Efficiency. The second thing I’d add to the list is to take another look at the Defense Policy Review Initiative (DPRI) agreement, which will move US forces out of Japan just as the threats to Japan are increasing. Reached in 2006 after many years of negotiation, the DPRI was premised on the doubtful belief that US forces in Japan – especially the US Marines on Okinawa – were such an irritant that they potentially threatened the entire US-Japan security relationship. Thus, the thinking went, move a lot of them somewhere else – Guam, Hawaii and even back to the continental United States. wasn’t considered a problem back then. If anything, the idea was that with enough engagement and the “open hand of friendship,” the PRC would become a responsible stakeholder and liberalize. Even the Marines saw China as just a friend they hadn’t made. The Japanese wanted the Americans gone – but, of course, on call to come back (and die for Japan) if things got dangerous. Indeed, it often seemed the Japanese considered the US military presence as more of a danger than the PRC. Some years later – after the China threat became apparent – one of the Japanese negotiators told me he wished they could re-do the deal. Marines have recently started moving from Okinawa to Guam after many years of delay. Marine commanders are quietly saying they can’t perform required missions if DPRI is carried out. They need to make their case. And DPRI needs prompt rethinking. You’ll hear, “It’s too hard.” No. “Too hard” is being on the breaching party at Fallujah. Everything else is just an inconvenience. But maybe the current US-Japan relationship is as good as it gets. And, anyway, Americans adapt, improvise, overcome. They’ve done it before. That may be true, but it can also mean some number of Americans will pay with their lives while we catch up. While we’ve prevailed in the past, there’s no reason to think we always will. So Hegseth needs to get his list – and say what he needs. And don’t forget this works both ways. The Japanese should tell the Americans what they need, too. And don’t hold back. This all might cause some friction. But the US-Japan relationship doesn’t need another love-fest. It needs to be able to fight together.",

      • "content": "COPENHAGEN: Danish government ministers condemned what they called President Donald Trump's escalated rhetoric on Thursday (Mar 27) and praised Greenland's inhabitants for their resilience in the face of US pressure for control over the Arctic island. Reiterating his desire to take over Greenland , which is a semi-autonomous Danish territory, Trump told journalists on Wednesday that the US needs the strategically located island for national and international security. \"So, I think we'll go as far as we have to go. We need Greenland and the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark,\" he said. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen called Trump's statements an escalation. \"These very powerful statements about a close ally do not suit the US president,\" he told reporters in Copenhagen on Thursday. \"I need to clearly speak out against what I see as an escalation from the American side,\" he said. \"The tightened rhetoric is in every way far-fetched.\" US Vice President JD Vance is set to visit the US military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland on Friday. However, an earlier plan for his wife Usha to visit a popular dog-sled race was called off amid local protests . Almost all Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States, according to opinion polls. In recent weeks, anti-American protesters have staged some of the largest demonstrations ever seen on the island. Poulsen said it was up to the Greenlandic people to determine their future. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen praised residents of the island, which has a population of 57,000. \"The attention is overwhelming and the pressure is great, but it is in times like these that you show what you are made of,\" she wrote in a Facebook post. \"You have not been cowed. You have stood up for who you are - and you have shown what you stand for. That has my deepest respect,\" she said. The planned visit by Usha Vance to the dog-sled event had set off a diplomatic spat between Copenhagen and Washington , and the Danish government welcomed the eventual cancellation.",

      • "content": "Three Intel board members will not stand for reelection at its 2025 annual meeting, the chipmaker said in a regulatory filing on Thursday, amid a historic transition under newly appointed CEO Lip-Bu Tan. Since late last year, the company has been reshuffling its board to make it more chip industry focused as it attempts to reclaim its lost glory under new leadership. The latest move will shrink the size of the board to 11. The members retiring include Omar Ishrak, former CEO of medical device maker Medtronic, who had in January 2023 stepped down as Intel's chairperson but stayed on as a director. Tsu-Jae King Liu, a dean at the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, a former professor of population health and health equity at the University of Pennsylvania, are the others leaving the board. Meanwhile, Intel bolstered its board through the appointments of Eric Meurice, former CEO of chipmaking equipment provider ASML, and Steve Sanghi, interim CEO of Microchip Technology, in December. The appointments followed the ouster of former CEO Pat Gelsinger. The changes mark a departure from Intel's previous board structure, which was populated by leaders in academia and finance, as well as former senior executives from the medical, tech and aerospace industries. \"We are committed to having the right mix of skills, qualifications and technical expertise on the Board,\" Chairperson Frank Yeary said in the filing on Thursday. All other current directors will stand for reelection. \"EQUALLY FOCUSED\" ON PRODUCT AND FOUNDRY CEO Tan said in a letter to shareholders on Thursday that \"to enable great products,\" he was \"equally focused\" on the company's product business and contract chip manufacturing business - the center of a turnaround strategy championed by former CEO Gelsinger. Gelsinger's total severance payment stands at about $7.9 million and he has forfeited all his outstanding unvested equity awards, the company said. Tan, who in August left Intel's board due to disagreements over the company's revival plan, rejoined as a director along with his appointment as CEO. \"We will remain focused on executing this plan to reduce our operating expenses and capital expenditures, simplify our portfolio and eliminate organizational complexity,\" Tan said, referring to the cost-savings plan introduced last year under Gelsinger, which included a 15 per cent workforce reduction.",

      • "content": "URUMQI, China , March 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- On March 25 , State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. successfully completed the deployment and testing of the distribution network micro-application cluster, marking a phased advancement in the pilot construction. The distribution network micro-application cluster represents a significant outcome of the intelligent transformation and development of the State Grid Xinjiang power distribution network. It integrates previously decentralized systems and data resources, covering all business domains of the distribution network, thereby forming a systematic and refined management framework. This fully supports the operation and management of the distribution network, enabling personnel to avoid switching between multiple systems, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. Furthermore, it empowers grassroots operations by reducing burdens, improving business quality and efficiency, and facilitating energy transformation and green development. As one of the pilot units for the construction of the distribution network micro-application cluster within the State Grid Corporation, State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power officially initiated the construction of the distribution network micro-application cluster in December 2024 . Through efficient organization and innovative practices, it has achieved phased results in system deployment, testing and verification, integration, and evolution, establishing itself as a benchmark for the construction of digital intelligent distribution networks in Western network provinces. To ensure steady and orderly progress in this initiative, State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power established a dedicated team for the pilot construction of the distribution network micro-application cluster. It coordinated with local and municipal power supply companies to complete the deployment of PC and APP-based micro-applications and conducted the first round of testing and verification for all applications. Additionally, to enhance the application ecosystem capabilities of the distribution network micro-application cluster, it completed a differentiated analysis of provincial self-built systems versus the distribution network micro-application cluster, systematically advancing the integration and evolution of self-built systems while guiding the practical application of the distribution network micro-application cluster in Xinjiang. Moving forward, State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power will accelerate the construction of the distribution network micro-application cluster, increase investment in the intelligent transformation of the distribution network, and strive to establish a modern distribution network management system characterized by \"equipment transparency, business online-ization, and intelligent management and control.\" This effort aims to contribute to Xinjiang's strength in supporting the State Grid Corporation's goal of becoming \"an internationally leading energy Internet enterprise with Chinese characteristics.\" SOURCE State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd",

      • "content": "WASHINGTON: The Trump administration said on Thursday (Mar 27) it will provide US$73 million in new financial aid to Rohingya refugees through the United Nations World Food Programme, amid concerns that aid cuts could deepen the crisis for the world's largest stateless population. \"This food and nutrition support through @WFP will provide critically needed food and nutrition assistance for more than one million people,\" US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a post on X. \"It is important that our international partners engage with sharing the burden with life-saving assistance such as this.\" The infusion comes as US President Donald Trump and his administration have made sweeping cuts to foreign assistance as part of his \"America First\" agenda and wider efforts to drastically cut federal spending and dismantle parts of the US government. Two UN agencies had warned that a funding deficit would curb rations for the Rohingya in Bangladesh who have fled violence in neighboring Myanmar for the past eight years. Refugees have worried that cuts would worsen hunger , curtail critical healthcare and fuel crime. Washington had been the largest provider of aid to the Rohingya refugees, contributing nearly US$2.4 billion since 2017, according to the State Department. But the recent freeze on funds after Trump took office in January has forced at least five hospitals to reduce services. Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk have moved to shutter USAID, the main US foreign aid agency, and merge its remnants into the State Department, fired hundreds of staff and contractors and terminated billions of dollars in services on which tens of millions of people around the world depend. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in February granted a waiver for all life-saving assistance and reasonable administrative costs as necessary to deliver such aid. The Trump administration official overseeing the dismantling of USAID had proposed phasing out help for the Rohingya, Reuters reported earlier this month.",

      • "content": "Shares of Kyndryl fell nearly 13 per cent on Thursday, after a research report from short-seller Gotham City alleged the IT services provider has manipulated certain financial metrics. Gotham City said Kyndryl manipulated its reported adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow to give the appearance of profits and cash flow while in reality it generated losses and burned cash. \"An economically realistic calculation of FCF shows that the company has never generated free cash flow, which should be particularly concerning that revenue has declined every single year,\" the report said. Kyndryl is a former infrastructure services business of IBM and operates in the consulting and IT industry where it has been benefiting from higher demand for its offerings due to a push into artificial intelligence. \"Kyndryl rejects in the strongest possible terms the conclusions reached within the report, which was clearly designed to manipulate the company's stock for the short seller's benefit,\" a Kyndryl spokesperson said. \"Kyndryl has never spoken to this firm, and had we been afforded the opportunity to do so, we would have pointed out the many inaccuracies and falsehoods contained in this so-called analysis,\" the spokesperson added. Gotham City also said the company faces \"much higher\" additional costs to IBM than the market thinks and the escalation in costs \"will unravel the misleading narratives that management has relied on to boost the stock\". It added Kyndryl faces up to $1 billion to $2 billion bump to cost of services over the next few years. Additionally, the short-seller said it has identified accounting and disclosure irregularities regarding Kyndryl's reported payments to IBM from 2019 to 2023.",

      • "content": "The chief of Myanmar's ruling junta vowed on Thursday (Mar 27) to hold a free and fair election in December, as he urged armed opponents in a widening civil war to renounce violence and pursue dialogue. Min Aung Hlaing during a speech at the country's annual armed forces day parade said the military was seeking to hold a \"dignified\" election and promised to transfer power to the winning party. He told hundreds of soldiers assembled at the sprawling parade ground in the capital Naypyidaw that they must support a free and fair, multi-party vote. \"The necessary preparations are underway for the election,\" he said. \"We are working ... to hold the election people desire, which is a free and fair and multi-party democratic election.\" \"We will transfer power to the winning party,\" he added. Despite being locked in a civil war, the economy in tatters and dozens of political parties banned or refusing to take part, the military is determined to forge ahead with an election, which critics have derided as a sham to keep the generals in power through proxies. Since overthrowing the elected civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, the military has struggled to run the country and fend off a rebellion that has its roots in a youth-led uprising, which the army suppressed with lethal force. Min Aung Hlaing had earlier this month said the election would take place either in December this year, or January 2026 , providing a timeframe for the first time during a visit to Belarus. The junta conducted a census last year as part of preparations to create a voter list, for which it said a full on-ground survey was compiled in only 145 of Myanmar's 330 townships. It says 53 parties have signed up to contest the election. Opponents of the military government have said they would disrupt the vote and have asked other countries not to recognise the outcome, saying it will be held against the will of the people. Min Aung Hlaing said the military was fighting a \"just war\" against rebels bent on destroying the country, urging them to give up their armed campaign and pursue political solutions through dialogue. Some analysts say the holding of the ballot could trigger even more violence and Myanmar's neighbours in the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN have told the junta to prioritise peace over an election. Fighting has displaced more than three million people in Myanmar, with widespread food insecurity and over a third of the population in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations.",

      • "content": "SEOUL/TOKYO : For Japan and South Korea, tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump represent a blow to domestic car industries that are both economic pillars and sources of national pride. Shares in companies such as Japan's Toyota and Honda and South Korea's Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp fell, wiping off some $16.5 billion in value, after Trump on Wednesday unveiled a 25 per cent tariff on imported cars and light trucks to take effect on April 3. On the streets of Tokyo and Seoul, and in \"motor city\" Gwangju, people were concerned the levies would have a far-reaching impact, speaking to the singular role the car industry has played in the post-war economic rise of the two U.S. allies. While car production helped transform Germany, Italy and France after World War Two, its influence in Asia has been even more profound. Automakers form the nucleus of vast networks of group companies that impact almost every facet of working life in the two countries. In Japan, where the industry accounts for roughly 3 per cent of gross domestic product, it is the automakers - particularly Toyota - that set the precedent for national wage increases through annual talks between unions and management. The auto supply chain totalled around 60,000 companies as of May last year, according to research firm Teikoku Databank. The industry is broadly responsible for the employment of more than 5 million people, or 8 per cent of the entire workforce, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. South Korea's car industry is its biggest employer, and cars and automotive parts account for 14 per cent of exports. About half go to the United States. \"The auto industry is the first thing that comes to mind for most people when you mention manufacturing,\" said Hiroshi Kojima, a 56-year-old businessman at a materials company who spoke to Reuters in central Tokyo. \"I am worried this could have a big impact on the economy and hit production of Japan's manufacturers.\" UNCERTAINTY IN MOTOR CITY In Gwangju, South Korea, home to the factories that export Kia's Sportage, Soul and Seltos crossovers to the United States, \"we are concerned about production volume and jobs,\" said a worker at a Kia supplier, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He told Reuters his factory planned to keep staffing Saturday shifts in April, but that demand looked uncertain. U.S. automaker General Motors has factories in South Korea that export more than 80 per cent of vehicles produced, including Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer crossovers to the United States. They are likely to be hit harder than plants of South Korean rivals, which produce more cars for the domestic market. \"We are nervous,\" one union worker told Reuters, also speaking on condition of anonymity. He said management previously told the union that 2025 production would be in line with last year, and has not so far updated its targets. \"We are very concerned about the absence of the South Korean president who can address tariff issues. This is not something that we can control,\" the worker said, referring to the political turmoil that started in December when now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol briefly declared martial law. South Korea's industry minister Ahn Duk-geun met with executives from automakers and suppliers on Thursday and expressed concern about the impact of tariffs, especially for auto parts makers. He promised measures by April to minimise the impact, including boosting domestic investments and demand. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Tokyo would put \"all options on the table\" and noted that Japan is the top source of foreign investment into the United States, something the government has been stressing to Washington. In 2023 Japan exported 4.4 million vehicles, including trucks and buses, with one-third going to the United States. The tariffs hit a key part of most global automakers' supply chains - Mexico, where for years they have built up lower-cost production bases. Mexico is the top vehicle exporter to the United States, accounting for 2.5 million light vehicles in 2023, according to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association. Nissan took a 10 per cent share of that, the largest among Asian carmakers but less than General Motors, Stellantis and Ford. JOB WORRIES For 57-year-old waitress Etsuko Fukada, the tariffs highlighted the difficult dynamics of Japan's relationship with the United States. She said Tokyo was unlikely to speak out because of its reliance on Washington for its military defence. The auto industry has become even more important as Japan's influence in other areas - such as consumer electronics and microchips - has waned in recent years. Automakers are still seen as top destinations for new graduates and competition for white-collar jobs can be fierce. Mayu Morikawa, a 24-year-old graduate student looking for work, said the tariffs made her fear for her own prospects and those of a friend who had just started at work at a carmaker. In South Korea, Hyun Sang-jin said the tariffs could threaten many people's quality of life, given Hyundai's pivotal role in the country. \"I think this will lead to a big drop in jobs,\" the Seoul resident said.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK :The dollar was mixed on Thursday as traders mulled how severe tariffs scheduled to be revealed by U.S. President Donald Trump next week are likely to be, while the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso weakened after Trump announced auto trade levies. Rising optimism that Trump will be flexible in determining tariffs boosted risk sentiment and the greenback earlier this week, but traders remain nervous ahead of his planned April 2 announcement on reciprocal tariffs. “The pendulum that seems to be swinging right now for markets is initially having a knee-jerk reaction to the worst possible kind of expression of whatever's announced, and then slowly digesting the fact that it might not be as bad as feared and it might not even be as announced because it's part of a broader negotiation,” said Eric Theoret, FX strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto. Trump on Wednesday placed a 25 per cent tariff on imported cars and light trucks due to take effect next week and governments from Ottawa to Paris threatened retaliation. The Mexican peso weakened 1.04 per cent to 20.337 per U.S. dollar. The Canadian dollar fell 0.31 per cent to C$1.43 per dollar. The U.S. imported $474 billion of automotive products in 2024, including passenger cars worth $220 billion. Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany were the biggest suppliers. The euro, meanwhile, was stronger on the day and is on track to end a bearish streak of six consecutive days of losses against the dollar. It was last up 0.25 per cent at $1.0779, after earlier dropping to a three-week low of $1.0731. The single currency bounced earlier this month as German government debt yields surged on German plans to increase spending and overhaul borrowing limits. The euro has retraced some of that gain in the past week. Central banks including the European Central Bank are also signalling that they are less likely to cut rates in the near term as they gauge the economic impact of tariffs, which could hurt growth but also increase inflation. “The ECB is getting a little more forceful in terms of wanting to move to a pause. I think they're starting to communicate that they're done with easing for now in the absence of major developments,” said Theoret. A trade war with the United States could have a fleeting impact on euro zone inflation but a far more detrimental effect on economic growth, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos said on Thursday. The dollar gained 0.17 per cent to 150.83 Japanese yen and earlier reached a three-week high of 151.09 as benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields also reached a one-month high of 4.40 per cent. There was little reaction to U.S. data on Thursday showing that the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits slipped last week. Sterling strengthened 0.32 per cent to $1.2926, recovering from the previous session's fall as traders weighed the spring statement from Finance Minister Rachel Reeves. Reeves said on Thursday that Britain was working to secure an exemption from U.S. auto tariffs and could review subsidies offered to Tesla, owned by top Trump adviser Elon Musk, to better support its industry. Elsewhere, the Norwegian crown strengthened against the dollar after the central bank kept interest rates on hold on Thursday, as an unexpected resurgence of inflation led policymakers to postpone their previously stated plan for a cut. The U.S. currency fell 0.21 per cent at 10.508 crown. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin dropped 0.90 per cent to $86,487.",

      • "content": "The visit follows Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's recent Gujarat tour, where he signaled a shake-up within the state unit to strengthen the party's prospects ahead of key elections. A total of 33 district and eight city presidents will participate in the strategy meeting at Gandhi Bhavan in Delhi. The discussions will primarily focus on rebuilding the party's grassroots network ahead of next year's local body elections and decentralising power within the state unit, a demand that has been gaining traction among party workers. The initiative is part of a nationwide Congress revamp process, involving 700 district presidents across India in a three-phase engagement. Gujarat's leadership will engage with senior Congress figures to finalise strategies aimed at improving the party's performance in the state, where it has struggled against the BJP's dominance for over two decades. Rahul Gandhi's March 8 address in Ahmedabad served as a wake-up call for Gujarat Congress leaders. Speaking at a workers' meeting, he accused party members of working covertly for the BJP. \"There are two types of people in Congress - those who are genuinely committed to the party's ideology and those who, despite being part of Congress, act in the interest of the BJP,\" Rahul Gandhi stated, making it clear that such internal sabotage was a key factor in the party's poor electoral performances. He further insisted that removing leaders acting as the BJP's 'B team' was necessary to revive Congress in Gujarat. Rahul Gandhi hinted at a purge within the state unit, stating that 20 to 40 leaders may need to be expelled to ensure Congress regains its ideological integrity. He also acknowledged that Congress had failed to effectively connect with the public in Gujarat, attributing this to a divided leadership. \"One section of our leadership understands and respects the people of Gujarat, while the other is detached and compromised,\" he said. He emphasised that winning elections should not come at the cost of the party's values. \"What truly matters is ensuring Congress remains under the leadership of those who uphold its core principles,\" he declared. Adding to the party's renewed focus on Gujarat, the Congress high command has scheduled its national convention in Ahmedabad on April 8-9. The event will see senior leaders, national strategists, and regional representatives come together to chalk out a roadmap for Congress's revival in the state. During the convention, discussions will focus on formulating a mass outreach strategy to counter the BJP's influence, empowering local leadership to make autonomous decisions, strengthening booth-level committees to improve election performance, and addressing factionalism within the Gujarat Congress. Despite decades of electoral setbacks, Congress still holds a loyal voter base in rural Gujarat, especially among farmers, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority communities. However, internal conflicts, a lack of strong leadership, and a weak cadre system have allowed the BJP to maintain an iron grip over the state's politics. Political analysts believe that the upcoming Delhi meeting and the national convention in Ahmedabad will be crucial in determining Congress's future in Gujarat. With local body elections approaching in 2026 and the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections on the horizon, the Congress party's ability to implement these changes swiftly will determine whether it can pose a serious challenge to the BJP or remain a secondary force in the state's politics. • "content": "Nicholas Pooran's breathtaking 70 off 26 balls set the tone, while Mitchell Marsh played a composed supporting role with a well-paced half-century. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur starred with the ball, claiming four wickets to dismantle SRH's middle order. The clash also set a new benchmark for high-scoring encounters, with a staggering match aggregate of 383 runs-the highest ever in games involving these two teams. A key highlight of the match was the sensational 116-run partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, which not only anchored LSG's successful chase but also rewrote the franchise's record books. Their stand surpassed the previous highest second-wicket partnership for LSG, which was 95 runs between KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda. Batting first, SRH got off to a fiery start courtesy of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who maintained a blistering run rate of 13.5-the highest for any pair with a minimum of 500 runs in IPL history. Head was in an attacking mood, smashing 47 off 28 balls, but debutant Prince Yadav struck to claim his maiden IPL wicket by knocking over the Australian's stumps. Shardul Thakur turned the tide in LSG's favour with a brilliant spell, dismissing Abhishek (6) and Ishan Kishan (0) in the same over. Kishan became the latest player to register a duck immediately after scoring a century in his previous match. Despite the strong start, SRH's middle order crumbled under pressure. Heinrich Klaasen (14) was dismissed in an unfortunate run-out, while Nitish Reddy (32) was bowled while attempting to accelerate against Ravi Bishnoi. At 110/4 after 12 overs, SRH seemed unlikely to cross 200, a stark contrast to their record-breaking 286/6 in the previous game. Aniket Verma's quickfire 36 off 13 balls provided some hope, but his aggressive approach led to his downfall. SRH's captain, Pat Cummins, briefly entertained with three consecutive sixes but fell soon after. The last two overs yielded just ten runs, as SRH finished with 190/9 in 20 overs. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-34, earning him the Purple Cap. LSG's chase began with an early setback as Aiden Markram was dismissed by Mohammed Shami. However, Nicholas Pooran took charge, launching a brutal assault on the SRH bowling attack. He raced to an 18-ball fifty, the fastest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, smashing seven sixes in the process. He particularly targeted left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma, hitting him for two massive sixes in the power-play. Marsh, who came in as the Impact Player, played second fiddle to Pooran initially but later found his rhythm. He brought up his second consecutive fifty off 29 balls before falling to Cummins, shortly after Pooran was trapped lbw for 70. With 53 needed from 54 balls, SRH briefly found hope when Harshal Patel pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Ayush Badoni. However, David Miller and Abdul Samad ensured there were no further hiccups, steering LSG home with ease. Samad played a nifty cameo of 8-ball 22 in the end against his old team, making his debut for his new franchise. LSG reached 193/5 in 16.3 overs, sealing a dominant five-wicket victory, and claimed their first victory of the season. Brief scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 190/9 in 20 overs (Travis Head 47, Aniket Verma 36; Shardul Thakur 4/34, Prince Yadav 1-29) lost to Lucknow Super Giants 193/5 in 16.3 overs (Nicholas Pooran 70, Mitchell Marsh 52; Pat Cummins 3-29, Harshal Patel 1-28) by five wickets MENAFN27032025000231011071ID1109365249 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "As per the notification, all companies procuring goods or services from micro and small enterprises must submit a half-yearly return to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs if their payments exceed 45 days from the date of acceptance or deemed acceptance. The notification, issued under Section 9 and read with Section 15 of the Act, aims to address delayed payments, a major challenge faced by small businesses. The required return must include details of the total outstanding amount due to micro and small enterprise suppliers. Additionally, companies must also specify the reasons for the delay in making these payments. This regulation is expected to improve financial discipline among larger corporations and enhance liquidity for MSMEs, which often struggle due to delayed payments. The directive is part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen the MSME sector, which is a crucial contributor to employment and economic growth in India. The notification was signed by Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner. Businesses failing to comply may face penalties as per the provisions of the MSME Act. Industry experts believe this move will bring greater transparency and accountability, ultimately benefiting small businesses. • "content": "This accounts for 37.09 per cent of India's total electronics exports, which stood at USD 34.02 billion from April 2024 to February 2025. Industry analysts predict that Tamil Nadu is on course to achieve USD 20-22 billion in annual electronics exports by 2027-28. Industries Minister TRB Rajaa highlighted the state's efforts to move up the value chain by manufacturing high-value electronics components. \"We are focused on attracting companies utilising advanced technology to provide high-end jobs,\" he said. The state's electronics export order value for the financial year ending March 2024 was USD 9.56 billion, more than double that of Karnataka (USD 4.60 billion) and Uttar Pradesh (USD 4.46 billion). So far this fiscal year, Tamil Nadu has further extended its lead, with Karnataka at USD 6.88 billion and Uttar Pradesh at USD 4.69 billion. Tamil Nadu's strategic focus is shifting from low-value manufacturing and assembly to high-end semiconductor and electronics component manufacturing. \"While other states are offering aggressive incentives to attract basic electronics manufacturers, we are directing incentives towards semiconductor and advanced electronics firms,\" Rajaa added. The Union government recently announced two new electronics manufacturing clusters in Tamil Nadu-at Pillaipakkam in Kancheepuram and Manalur in Tiruvallur-at a cost of Rs 1,112 crore. Experts believe these developments will reinforce Tamil Nadu's role as a key player in the global electronics supply chain, benefiting from its robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and proactive policies. • "description": "(MENAFN - KNN India) New Delhi, Mar 27 (KNN) According to the latest data released by the Tea Board of India, the country exported 254 million kilograms (Mkg) of tea in 2024, making it the ...",
      • "content": "While Kenya retained its top position with over 500 Mkg in exports, India surpassed Sri Lanka, which had been a close competitor. In 2023, India and Sri Lanka had nearly identical export figures, each around 231 Mkg. However, India outperformed its neighbor in 2024 by exporting 24 Mkg more, securing the second spot globally. This achievement marks India's second-best tea export performance, just behind the record 256 Mkg exported in 2018. The total revenue generated from tea exports in 2024 amounted to Rs 7,112 crore. For the past several years, India's tea exports remained in the range of 200-225 Mkg, except for the exceptional performance in 2018. The recent surge in exports has revived hopes of reaching the ambitious 300-Mkg mark by 2030. India produces approximately 1,400 Mkg of tea annually, making it one of the largest tea producers in the world. A significant portion of the export growth has been driven by the orthodox tea segment, which has benefited from various government schemes at both the central and state levels. Industry experts credit policy support for this success. “With the favorable export policies introduced by the Centre and the backing from state governments, the tea industry is optimistic about expanding its export reach in the coming years,” said Prabir Kumar Bhattacharjee, secretary general of the Tea Association of India. This remarkable achievement offers much-needed relief to an industry that has faced challenges for years, paving the way for a brighter future. • "content": "At the Sourcex India 2025 show organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), Director General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi highlighted the nation's strategic opportunities in the international marketplace. Sarangi emphasised that India's exports are positioned for growth, characterising the current global trade landscape as a \"golden\" opportunity to enhance manufacturing competitiveness. He projected that the country's exports in goods and services will surpass USD 800 billion this year, compared to USD 778 billion in the previous period. The official acknowledged recent fluctuations in export performance, noting a 10.85 percent dip to USD 36.91 billion in February. However, he remains sanguine about future prospects, pointing to encouraging order enquiries and positive indicators from the exporting community. The government's production-linked incentive schemes and efforts to improve ease of doing business are expected to bolster domestic manufacturing and export potential. Geopolitical trade tensions, including potential reciprocal tariffs from the United States, have raised concerns among exporters, particularly in engineering and pharmaceutical sectors. Despite these challenges, FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai echoed Sarangi's optimism, suggesting that the removal of tariff uncertainties could further stimulate export growth. The goods and services export landscape remains dynamic, with April-February fiscal period exports in goods reaching USD 395.63 billion and services estimated at USD 354.90 billion. Government officials advocate for a pragmatic approach, urging exporters to navigate the complex global trade environment with strategic wisdom and adaptability. As India continues to position itself in the global market, the government's confident outlook suggests a resilient export sector prepared to overcome current economic uncertainties and capitalise on emerging opportunities. • "content": "This development is expected to improve trade routes and reduce logistical disruptions for Indian exporters. The CIS, apart from Russia, includes Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Armenia, and Moldova. India exports a range of goods to these nations, including gems and jewellery, cotton, coffee, tea, tobacco, machinery, plastic products, transport equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The prolonged war has already impacted Indian trade, particularly in key commodities. Russia, which supplies 30 per cent of raw diamonds to India, has seen its trade with India affected due to its exit from the G7 and economic sanctions. Government sources suggest that the decline in India's merchandise exports is more attributable to pricing factors rather than a decrease in trade volume. Lower prices of petroleum products and the reduced availability of raw diamonds have significantly impacted export values. In a separate trade development, India is also reviewing its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea. The country is pushing for lower duties on 15 to 20 products, including shrimp exports. India and South Korea already share a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is currently under revision. India's trade deficit with South Korea remains a concern, with exports worth USD 6.41 billion in FY 2023-24 against imports of USD 21.13 billion. As trade negotiations continue, India aims to bridge this gap and enhance market access for its exporters in the region. • "description": "(MENAFN - KNN India) New Delhi, Mar 27 (KNN) The Indian electronics manufacturing landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation, with mobile phone production emerging as a cornerstone of the ...",
      • "content": "From a mere two mobile manufacturing units in 2014 to over 300 today, the sector has witnessed an extraordinary evolution, driven by strategic government initiatives like the 'Make in India' program and the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, central government said on Wednesday. Local mobile phone manufacturing has experienced a remarkable surge, escalating from 26 percent of domestic sales in 2014-15 to an impressive 99.2 percent by December 2024. The manufacturing value of mobile phones has skyrocketed from Rs 18,900 crore in fiscal year 2014 to Rs 4,22,000 crore in fiscal year 2024, underscoring the sector's robust growth trajectory. Exports have been equally compelling, with mobile phone exports rocketing from Rs 1,566 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 1.2 lakh crore in 2023-24 - a staggering 77-fold increase. Currently, India manufactures between 325 to 330 million mobile phones annually, with approximately one billion mobile phones in active use across the country. The semiconductor ecosystem is also gaining considerable momentum, with five landmark projects receiving approval, representing a combined investment of nearly Rs 1.52 lakh crore. The Ministry of Electronics and IT emphasised that India's strategic policies and skilled workforce are positioning the nation as a significant global player in electronics and semiconductor industries. Government commitment is further demonstrated through increased budget allocations. The PLI scheme's electronics sector budget has expanded from Rs 5,747 crore in the revised 2024-25 estimate to Rs 8,885 crore in 2025-26. The export outlook is equally promising, with electronics exports projected to surpass Rs 3 lakh crore in the current fiscal year, primarily driven by smartphone exports. Recent industry data highlights the sector's dynamism: electronics exports reached Rs 2.87 lakh crore in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2025 (April-February), representing a robust 35 percent growth compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Smartphones remain the primary contributor, accounting for Rs 1.75 lakh crore in exports and marking a substantial 54 percent year-on-year increase. As India continues to accelerate its electronics manufacturing capabilities, the nation stands on the cusp of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse, with ambitious targets and strategic government support driving unprecedented growth in the sector. Both countries acknowledged that the current trade volume does not reflect their full potential and pledged to take concrete measures to enhance economic cooperation. A key outcome of the discussions was the proposal to establish an India-Uganda Joint Business Forum, aimed at fostering stronger engagement between industry leaders from both nations. Key sectors identified for trade and investment growth included minerals, coffee, cocoa products, pulses, spices, dairy products, essential oils, plastic raw materials, fruits, vegetables, and residual chemical products. Additionally, both sides emphasized cooperation in mining, banking, digital infrastructure, MSME development, health, pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles, critical minerals-including Rare Earth Elements (REE)-and petrochemicals. The two countries also explored potential Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the areas of Indian Pharmacopoeia recognition, Public Works and Infrastructure, Agriculture, Traditional Medicine, and Tele-medicine. • "description": "(MENAFN - KNN India) New Delhi, Mar 27 (KNN) In a comprehensive monthly economic review, India's Finance Ministry projected an accelerated economic growth trajectory for the January-March quarter ...",
      • "content": "The ministry highlighted multiple factors contributing to this potential economic momentum, including improved export growth, increased government capital expenditure, and economic activities associated with the Kumbh Mela. High-frequency economic indicators substantiate the optimistic outlook, with e-way bills showing double-digit growth and Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) remaining in the expansionary zone. After experiencing a seven-quarter low of 5.6% growth in the July-September period, India's gross domestic product (GDP) demonstrated resilience by improving to 6.2% in the subsequent quarter, driven by strong agricultural and service sector performance. The Finance Ministry estimates the Indian economy will achieve a 6.5% growth in the financial year ending March 2025, despite significant external challenges. However, the report also cautioned about potential risks, including trade policy uncertainties, volatile international commodity prices, and financial market fluctuations that could impact the economic growth outlook for the upcoming financial year. Emphasising the critical role of private sector investments, the ministry stressed the importance of recognising the interdependence between investment spending and consumption demand. The report noted potential positive influences such as proposed changes in personal income tax structures, which are expected to enhance middle-class disposable incomes, and the recent 25-basis point policy rate cut that could further stimulate economic growth. On the inflation front, the ministry expressed optimism about moderating food inflation, citing expectations of record food grain production in 2024-25. Recent months have already witnessed easing inflationary pressures, with headline retail inflation declining to a seven-month low in February 2025. The report also provided insights into recent stock market fluctuations, attributing the decline to factors including profit-taking and reallocation by foreign portfolio investors. Notably, robust external debt market inflows, partially catalysed by India's inclusion in the Bloomberg Emerging Market Local Currency index, and continued faith from retail investors have helped mitigate the market's volatility. • "content": "Over 150 volunteers conducted accessibility audits of public spaces across Bengaluru to assess the inclusivity of the city's infrastructure for people with disabilities and the elderly. The audit drive was organized by the Association of People with Disability (APD) to commemorate World Accessibility Day, an initiative conceptualized by Svayam and supported by APD, aimed at raising awareness about the urgent need for accessible public spaces. Students from Ramaiah College of Law conducting an accessibility audit in Gandhinagar Volunteers included students, grassroots workers, and community groups who came together to evaluate public infrastructure through a series of accessibility audits. The audits were carried out using Yes to Access-APD's crowdsourced mobile application designed to map and assess accessibility features in real time. The app combines artificial intelligence with user inputs, enabling volunteers and citizens to evaluate public places for essential elements such as ramps, railings, accessible toilets, tactile pathways, and clear signage. The data collected through the app not only highlights existing barriers but also serves as a valuable resource for driving change toward more inclusive urban spaces. Participants included the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at Ramaiah College of Law, Village and Urban Rehabilitation Workers from Bangalore Rural, the Rotaract Club, Melton Fellowship, students from BMS Institute of Technology, and the Federation of Voluntary Organizations for Rural Development in Karnataka (FEVOURD-K). Their collective effort reflected a growing movement toward making Bengaluru's public spaces more inclusive and accessible. Speaking about the campaign's impact, Bhumika Modh, Project Lead of the Yes to Access initiative, said, \"Today, we witnessed what collective action can achieve. By engaging students and grassroots volunteers, we are not just collecting data but building awareness that accessibility is fundamental to dignity and equal opportunity.\" A representative from Svayam emphasized, \"World Accessibility Day, observed every year on March 27, was initiated by Svayam to bring national attention to the need for inclusive environments for people of all abilities. As we mark the third year of this important observance in 2025, we are proud to see communities like Bengaluru stepping up to lead the way. Accessibility is not a special feature-it is a foundational principle for a more equal and inclusive society. Every person, regardless of their mobility, deserves the freedom to live with dignity, independence, and equal opportunity. This collective action by over 150 volunteers is not just about data collection-it is about challenging the status quo and creating cities that work for everyone urge civic authorities to treat this data as a roadmap for transformative change.\" Mr. Krishnamurthy.K, District Disability Welfare Officer (DDWO), Bangalore Urban , said, \"Technology offers powerful tools to assess and improve accessibility in our cities. Integrating such solutions supports the government's efforts to make urban spaces more inclusive and responsive to the needs of every citizen.\" Mr. Jagadish, District Disability Welfare Officer (DDWO), Bangalore Rural , added,, \"Collaboration between communities, organizations, and government is essential to advance accessibility. Initiatives like this reflect a shared commitment to creating environments where everyone can participate fully.\" The findings from these audits will be compiled and shared with civic authorities, urban planners, and stakeholders to ensure Bengaluru takes tangible steps towards becoming more accessible and inclusive for persons with disabilities and the elderly. About The Association of People with Disability (APD) The Association of People with Disability (APD) is a non-profit organization based in Bengaluru, working since 1959 to empower people with disabilities from underprivileged backgrounds.
