      • "content": "KYIV: Major European powers threw their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire on Saturday (May 10), with the backing of US President Donald Trump , and threatened President Vladimir Putin with \"massive\" new sanctions if he did not accept within days. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Ukraine set the start of the ceasefire for May 12 at a meeting in Kyiv , during which they held a phone call with Trump. \"So all of us here together with the US are calling Putin out. If he is serious about peace, then he has a chance to show it,\" British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a press conference. \"No more ifs and buts, no more conditions and delays.\" Soon after the European leaders' announcement, the Kremlin appeared to pour scorn on it. \"We hear many contradictory statements from Europe. They are generally confrontational in nature rather than aimed at trying to revive our relations. Nothing more,\" Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agency Interfax. Peskov was later quoted by the state TASS news agency as saying that Russia would consider the ceasefire proposal, while Moscow has its own position. Western sanctions against Russia have been toughened repeatedly since its full-scale invasion in 2022, without ending the war. But following through on the threat would be a sign of growing Western unity after months of unpredictability in US policy since Trump's return to the White House in January. After engaging directly with Russian officials, clashing publicly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and briefly cutting vital military aid to Kyiv, Washington has patched up ties with Ukraine and signed an agreement giving the US preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals. Trump, who did not immediately comment publicly on the European leaders' remarks, has also signalled frustration with what Washington views as Putin's foot-dragging over a ceasefire. \"In the event that the ceasefire is violated, massive sanctions will be prepared, in coordination between the Europeans and the United States,\" French President Emmanuel Macron said. By imposing new sanctions, the White House would be aligning itself more closely with Western Europe, which has been rattled by a trade war in which Trump has imposed tariffs on them and other countries and has suggested he might not come to the defence of NATO allies that underspend on their defence. Zelenskyy said he and the visiting leaders had agreed the unconditional ceasefire must start on Monday and cover air, sea and land. If Russia refused, it would face new sanctions, including the strengthening of punitive measures targeting its energy and banking sectors, he said. The leaders later issued a joint statement summing up the contents of the proposed 30-day ceasefire and saying its main purpose was \"to make room for diplomacy\". They welcomed support for the proposal from both Europe and the United States and said that if Russia sought to apply conditions, \"this can only be considered as an effort to prolong the war and undermine diplomacy\". Peskov had been quoted as saying on Friday that Russia supported the implementation of a 30-day ceasefire, but only with due consideration of \"nuances\". In remarks to US broadcaster ABC broadcast earlier on Saturday, Peskov had suggested Western military assistance for Ukraine must stop for a temporary ceasefire to take effect. \"Otherwise it will be an advantage for Ukraine,\" he said. TRUMP PHONE CALL Macron said that if the ceasefire went ahead, it would be monitored mainly by the US and European countries would contribute. Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president who is now a senior security official, derided the idea of giving Russia an option between being sanctioned or giving Ukrainian forces an opportunity to rebuild. \"Shove these peace plans up your pangender arses!\" he wrote on X. The European leaders said the terms of a peace deal would be negotiated during the 30-day pause in fighting. \"We have no illusions that the ceasefire will be breached,\" Zelenskyy said. On the eve of the summit, the US embassy in Kyiv warned of a \"potentially significant\" air attack in the coming days. When the European leaders arrived in Kyiv by train on Saturday, a screen on the platform announced the arrival of the \"Bravery Express\". Zelenskyy accompanied them as they paid their respects at a Kyiv memorial honouring Ukrainian soldiers killed in the war. The visit falls on the final day of a May 8-10 ceasefire declared by Putin that Ukraine did not accept, denouncing it as a sham. Both sides have accused each other of violating it. Reuters journalists at a field hospital near the front line in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region saw soldiers being brought in with combat injuries sustained since the Russian ceasefire began. \"There hasn’t been any ceasefire, shelling has continued just as before, drones are flying just like before, the same with explosives being dropped. Nothing has changed at all,\" said a wounded soldier who gave his name as Stanislav.",

      • "content": "SOUTHAMPTON, England :Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said dropping points against bottom side Southampton in a 0-0 Premier League draw on Saturday will result in a nervy final two games of the season in his side's pursuit of a Champions League place for next season. Southampton's hard-earned point not only means they avoid being the joint-worst team in Premier League history but also a tougher finish for City, who must hold off the chasing pack of Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. \"The result, of course, it's a missed opportunity today, we know that,\" said Guardiola, who failed to beat a bottom team for the first time in his nine seasons at City. \"It happened. Now, prepare the (FA Cup) final, less time (for) Bournemouth and then Fulham,\" he added, with City playing Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on May 17 at Wembley. \"We have three games left - the FA Cup and two games in the Premier League and I didn't expect anything different from one month ago in that we will need to fight until the end.\" City had won four straight league matches and were poised to move level on points with second-placed Arsenal but the momentum stalled at St Mary's. They are only two points above the three teams below them in the battle for a top-five finish. While Southampton have conceded a Premier League-high 82 goals this season, they kept City out by defending in numbers, which drew criticism from Guardiola and defender Ruben Dias. \"It was difficult,\" Guardiola said. \"Eleven players on the penalty spot. I didn't expect they would defend so, so deep. Defensively we were brilliant. But we missed the last actions that break the result.\" Dias echoed his manager's view. \"It's frustrating to play a team like that,\" he said. \"They didn't want to play. Just wasting time the whole game.\" One positive was the return of Erling Haaland, who missed six weeks with injury. The Norwegian, who remains third in the league's scoring chart with 21 goals, played until the end. \"We didn't expect him to play 90,\" Guardiola said. \"But the way the game was going, we needed people in the box.\"",

      • "content": "JERUSALEM: Hamas's armed wing released a video on Saturday (May 10) showing two Israeli hostages alive in the Gaza Strip, with one of the two men calling to end the 19-month-long war. The pair were identified by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum campaign group as Elkana Bohbot and Yosef Haim Ohana, who were kidnapped during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the war. The undated three-minute video footage released by Hamas's Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades shows one of the hostages, 36-year-old Bohbot, visibly weak and lying on the floor wrapped in a blanket. The second hostage, Ohana, 24, speaks in Hebrew urging the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of all remaining captives - a similar message to statements made by other hostages, likely under duress, in previous videos released by Hamas. In a statement, Bohbot's family said that \"Elkana and Yosef are crying out to be saved. While all the people of Israel hear their calls, a handful of decision-makers refuse to listen,\" echoing criticism of the Israeli government for failing to bring back the hostages. \"How much more can we bear? How much more can they endure? The fact that they are still there is a disgrace,\" the family said. Late Saturday, Israeli demonstrators calling for the release of the hostages and an end of the war gathered outside the defence ministry headquarters in the coastal city of Tel Aviv. AFP images showed some protesters holding pictures of the hostages and placards that read \"we can save the rest\" and \"all of them now\". UNCERTAINTY Bohbot, a Colombian-Israeli, was seen bound and injured in the face in footage from the day of the Hamas attack, and his family have expressed concern about his health. Bohbot and Ohana, both abducted by Palestinian militants from the site of a music festival, are among 58 hostages held in Gaza since the 2023 attack, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead. Hamas also holds the remains of an Israeli soldier killed in a 2014 war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the fate of three hostages presumed alive was unclear, without naming them. \"We know with certainty that 21 hostages are alive ... and there are three others whose status, sadly, we do not know,\" Netanyahu said in a video shared on his Telegram channel. Israel resumed its military offensive across the Gaza Strip on March 18, after a two-month truce that saw the release of dozens of hostages. Since the ceasefire collapsed, Hamas has released several videos of hostages, including of the two appearing in Saturday's video. Israel says the renewed offensive aims to force Hamas to free the remaining captives, although critics charge that it puts them in mortal danger. Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said on Saturday that at least 2,701 people have been killed since Israel resumed its campaign in Gaza, bringing the overall death toll since the war broke out to 52,810.",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV signalled on Saturday (May 10) he would continue with the vision and reforms of Pope Francis , telling the world's Catholic cardinals the late pontiff left a \"precious legacy\" that must carry on. In his first meeting with all the cardinals since his election as pontiff on May 8, Leo also asked the senior clerics to renew their commitment to major Church reforms enacted by the landmark Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Leo said Francis , who died on April 21, broadly had a vision of opening the staid 1.4-billion-member Church to the modern world, had left an \"example of complete dedication to service\". \"Let us take up this precious legacy and continue on the journey,\" the new pope told the cardinals . The pontiff also asked the clerics to \"renew together our complete commitment\" to the reforms enacted by the Council, which included celebrating the Mass in local languages rather than Latin and pursuing dialogue with other religions. He cited Francis ' focus on \"courageous and trusting dialogue with the contemporary world in its various components and realities\". Francis was pope for 12 years and often garnered criticism from conservative cardinals , who said he was watering down the Church's doctrine on issues such as inclusion of LGBT Catholics and women's leadership. Leo , the former US Cardinal Robert Prevost , was a relative unknown on the global stage before his election as pontiff. He had spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru before serving as a senior Vatican official for the past two years. The new pope said on Saturday he had taken his papal name partly to honor Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903), who was known as an advocate for social justice and pushed for fair pay and treatment of workers during the industrial revolution. Leo XIV said the Church must now take the lead in facing newer threats to workers, such as artificial intelligence. He said AI posed \"new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour\". Leo 's two-hour meeting with the cardinals took a different format to that used by previous pope s, who would typically offer a speech and expect the clerics only to listen. This time, Leo gave a prepared address and then opened the floor to any cardinal who wanted to make a comment - allowing the clerics to voice their opinions and concerns about the main issues facing the global Church. \"He listened very carefully, but he knows he's going to have to make the decisions,\" Irish Cardinal Sean Brady told Reuters. \"But we're here to help him\". Spanish Cardinal Aquilino Bocos Merino described the meeting as \"very cordial and communal\". CHINA DEAL COMES UP Leo greeted each of the cardinals individually as they left the meeting, which was held in the same small Vatican auditorium where the cardinals had been gathering in the days before the conclave to discuss who should be the next pope . Czech Cardinal Dominik Duka said one topic that came up was the situation of Catholics in communist China. The Vatican and China in 2018 signed a controversial deal on the appointment of bishops in the country, which gives Beijing some input into their selection. Conservatives have attacked the still-secret deal as a sell-out, but Duka told Reuters it was necessary to keep a dialogue open in places where the Church is oppressed, comparing it to dialogue between the Vatican and eastern European countries during the Cold War. German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, who openly clashed with Francis on issues concerning Catholic moral teaching, told Reuters that Saturday's encounter was \"very good and harmonious.\" To be elected as pope during the May 7-8 secret conclave at the Sistine Chapel, Leo required a two-thirds majority of 89 of the 133 voting cardinals . Madagascar Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana told Reuters that Leo received more than 100 votes at the final ballot on the afternoon of May 8.",

      • "content": "PROVIDENCE: Investors are hopeful that US-China trade talks this weekend will cool a trade war between the world's two largest economies and dispel some of the uncertainty clouding financial markets, though few expect a major breakthrough just yet. The highly anticipated meeting in Switzerland could mark one of the biggest developments since US President Donald Trump launched sweeping tariffs on April 2, which threw the global trade landscape into chaos and set off extreme market volatility. \"This is the mother of all negotiations,\" said Alejo Czerwonko, chief investment officer, Emerging Markets Americas, at UBS. \"There are hundreds of billions of dollars of trade on the line, a 145 per cent tariff on Chinese exports that amounts to some sort of de facto embargo and grievances that extend well beyond trade.\" As of 1810 GMT on Saturday (May 10), the US-China trade talks in Geneva had adjourned for the day and were set to continue on Sunday, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Recently, investors have expressed optimism that the worst-case trade scenarios would not come to pass, and pointed to signs of de-escalation between the US and China as a reason behind a rebound in equities. But despite comments by Trump ahead of the talks suggesting a lower level of Chinese tariffs, and a trade deal announced on Thursday between the US and Britain, many market participants said they were not expecting major breakthroughs this weekend. Rather, they confined themselves to hoping that nothing goes wrong when the two sides come face-to-face for the first formal round of what may be protracted negotiations. \"We're still doubtful that direct US-China negotiations will lead to a 'grand compromise',\" said Thierry Wizman, global FX and rates strategist at Macquarie, in a note to clients. IMMEDIATE PACT SEEN AS UNLIKELY Both the U.S. and China may want, or even need, to reach a deal, said Liqian Ren, director of Modern Alpha at WisdomTree Asset Management. At this early stage, however, there seems to be little incentive to do so rapidly, she added. \"Each still wants to see how the other side copes with negative headwinds,\" Ren said. \"Right now, the market is maybe a little bit too optimistic in terms of what China and the US can achieve and how fast events will move.\" Trade tensions between the two nations escalated last month, when the US boosted tariffs on all Chinese imports to a whopping 145 per cent, and China then raised levies on US imports to 125 per cent. On Friday, comments by Trump that an 80 per cent tariff on Chinese goods \"seems right\" - making his first suggestion of a specific alternative to the 145 per cent levies - created some hope of progress toward resolving the dispute. The benchmark S&P 500 stock index has already erased the steep losses seen in the immediate aftermath of the tariffs announcement on April 2, although businesses continue to warn investors of their impact, and the uncertainty they create, in earnings-related comments. The S&P 500 remains down about 8 per cent from its February all-time high and roughly 4 per cent for the year. Amid the tariff chaos, weak consumer sentiment surveys and other \"soft data\" have raised concerns about US growth, although most economic data has indicated resilience in the economy. EYEING MARKET VOLATILITY Volatility, meanwhile, remains. The Cboe Volatility Index, the options-based measure of investor anxiety, hovered around 22 late on Friday - well below its recent closing high of 52.33 in early April, but above its longer-term median of 17.6. One of the factors curbing that volatility so far has been the high cost of establishing short positions betting on future market declines, said WisdomTree's Ren. \"When a single (social media post) from the president can make the market move 10 per cent, it becomes very costly\" to establish those positions, Ren said. Equities soared on April 9 after Trump paused many of the heftiest tariffs for 90 days. Still, markets were poised for more volatility ahead, said Matt Gertken, head of geopolitical strategy at BCA, a macroeconomic investment research firm. Gertken said the firm's best advice was to \"sell on strength\". Any signs of progress in the initial discussions would be welcome, and allow China to devote more energy to its domestic economic problems, said Andrew Mattock, a portfolio manager at Matthews Asia. \"To talk about any other scenario, you end up with a lose-lose outcome,\" he warned. TOUGHEST DEAL TO NEGOTIATE Despite the relatively fast agreement with Britain, Claudio Irigoyen, head of global economics research at BofA Securities, cautioned that other deals would be harder to hammer out, with China being the toughest. \"I can see trade deals coming with India, Japan and maybe South Korea, down the road,\" he said. \"China - this is the most complicated and will be the last one to come,\" in part because the geopolitical relationship is entangled with the trade ties. Investors are concerned that negative scenarios have not been factored into markets. \"If we come out of Geneva with people using incendiary language and strong disagreements, I don't think that's priced in,\" said Czerwonko of UBS. The market would probably be content with only modest signs of progress, several investors said. \"We don't need happy talk,\" said Gertken.",

      • "description": "Using a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330, the new flights to Tokyo will launch on May 12.",
      • "content": "On Monday, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines will launch a new route between Seattle and Tokyo. The new route will be operated by a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 aircraft, which will fly daily to Narita Airport. It will become the group's first new long-haul route from Seattle. Thanks to the merger between the two airlines, approved by the US Department of Transport in September last year, Alaska Airlines is able to launch widebody operations through Hawaiian's Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 fleet. Flights between Seattle and Seoul are set to begin later this year. The new service to Tokyo is important for several reasons. Indeed, it marks the start of Alaska Air Group's widebody flying from Seattle, but it also signifies additional competition on a route that is already well-served, generally speaking. Three other airlines already connect Seattle to the Japanese capital, making Alaska Air Group's first long-haul venture an interesting choice. 4 Airlines Flying Between Seattle & Tokyo Passengers have plenty of choice when it comes to the Seattle to Tokyo market. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium , four airlines will be serving the route this year - the most this sector has ever seen. This includes Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and soon, Hawaiian/Alaska. Alaska Air Group plans to launch its flights as of May 12, at a daily frequency. Ben Minicucci, Alaska Air Group's CEO had previously said that from the carrier's Seattle hub, they will \"conveniently connect travelers from across our network as they head to Asia and beyond.\" The new Tokyo route forms part of the carrier's ambitious plan to operate to at least 12 long-haul destinations from Seattle by 2030. Delta Air Lines offers the most seats per month in the sector with its A350s and A330neos. Hawaiian Airlines comes second, and All Nippon Airways third. While Japan Airlines offers the lowest number of seats per flight, its Boeing 787s are configured with very dense premium cabins, capitalizing on higher-yielding passengers. Airline Airport served Aircraft Number of non-economy seats Time of daily departure from Seattle Delta Air Lines Haneda Airport Airbus A330-900 & Airbus A350-900 57 / 80 11:25 Japan Airlines Haneda Airport Boeing 787-9 79 13:30 All Nippon Airways Narita Airport Boeing 787-9 53 16:30 Hawaiian Airlines / Alaska Airlines Narita Airport Airbus A330-200 18 13:30 Success In A Competitive Market? Alaska Air Group will offer about 190,000 seats per year on this route at a daily frequency on the A330. Not only will they need to rely on connecting traffic over Seattle , but they will also have to compete against the 529,000 seats offered by the three other airlines in the same sector. Loads for the other three have been quite good, though. While this is no indication of how profitable the route has been for them, load factors hint as to whether the route has been performing well or not. Data from the US Department of Transportation shows the following performance for 2024. Average load factor Airline Onboards Seats 85% DL 171,000 202,000 84% JL 118,000 140,000 77% NH 103,000 134,000 75 Years Of Operation Northwestern Airlines, with a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser , is understood to be one of the first airlines to operate on the Seattle to Tokyo route in 1949. The airline has operated the route since then, switching to Delta Air Lines after the two companies merged in 2010. United Airlines also joined the sector for a significant amount of time, beginning in 1983. Similarly, it connected the Japanese capital to Portland. The carrier continued to operate the route through the 2000s, ending its flights in 2014. This came as the airline decided to shift its strategy in two primary ways: Reducing stopover flights beyond Tokyo. At this point, for example, the carrier had operated a medium-haul route network from the Japanese capital onwards to other destinations in Asia. This included flights to Bangkok, Singapore and Taipei. Interestingly enough, it has now backtracked on this strategy of dropping one-stop flights from Tokyo, having recently launched its new route to Ulaanbataar (Mongolia), for example. Shifting long-haul capacity to key US hubs for additional European flights. Services to Asia were proving less profitable in comparison to its European network. The airline thought it best to move long-haul capacity away from the West Coast towards Houston, Washington Dulles, and Chicago for flights to Europe. In July 2012, United's Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways decided to launch flights on the Seattle route. It has continued to operate the route since. At the end of March 2019, Japan Airlines also joined in.",

      • "content": "BOURNEMOUTH, England :Ollie Watkins flicked in a first-half winner as Aston Villa, down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes, beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to boost their hopes of playing in the Champions League again next season. Watkins broke the deadlock in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, after a VAR check for offside, with the lightest of touches to a Morgan Rogers cross for his 16th goal of the league campaign. The visitors, who rose to sixth, had Jacob Ramsey sent off for a second yellow card in the 80th to set up a nervous finish at the Vitality Stadium as late-goal specialists Bournemouth finally came to life but could not find an equaliser. Villa are level on 63 points with Newcastle United and Chelsea, fourth and fifth respectively before meeting at St James' Park on Sunday, and two clear of Nottingham Forest, who host Leicester City, in the battle for Champions League places. Villa have played a game more than all three rivals, who are only two points behind third-placed Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's side dropped points in a 0-0 draw at already-relegated bottom side Southampton earlier on Saturday. \"We are in Europe; Conference League, Europa League or Champions League,\" said Villa manager Unai Emery, whose side are sure of finishing at least seventh with eighth placed Brentford unable to catch them. \"Of course, we try to get our best dreams in Europe, playing Champions League again, but still we have matches to play, and there are other teams in front of us. \"To play in Europe for the third year in a row, I am so happy.\" Bournemouth, who stunned second-placed Arsenal 2-1 last weekend and could have moved up to eighth, remain in 10th spot with their outside challenge for Europe running out of steam with Brentford and Brighton two points clear. Should Manchester City defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final this month, an eighth-place finish would secure qualification for the Conference League. \"We are in a worse position than we were a couple of hours ago but we have to keep fighting,\" manager Andoni Iraola told Sky Sports television. Watkins' goal was his 75th in the league for Villa, taking him ahead of Gabriel Agbonlahor as the club's all-time top scorer in the Premier League era. \"I’ve had eyes on breaking that record since joining the club; you need to celebrate wins like that as it’s a great achievement,\" he said. Unai Emery's side, beaten by finalists Paris St Germain in this year's Champions League quarter-finals, had two chances before Watkins' breakthrough, with Marco Asensio hitting the post in the 43rd with an effort that fired up his side. Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga then had to make a double save from a Boubacar Kamara header and Matty Cash who nodded back the rebound. Bournemouth, starting with three changes from the Arsenal game, had only one shot on target in a first half with only two more shots than yellow cards (five). The response to the goal was tame for much of the second half but the hosts came alive after Ramsey walked. Antoine Semenyo shot wide in the 81st and Evanilson had a header palmed away by Emiliano Martinez. Semenyo then had an effort cleared off the line by Cash under pressure after a save from Martinez five minutes into stoppage time.",

      • "content": "BOURNEMOUTH, England :Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins flicked in a first-half winner as his side, down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes, beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to boost their hopes of playing in Europe again next season. Bournemouth, who stunned second-placed Arsenal 2-1 last weekend and could have moved up to eighth, remain in 10th spot with their outside challenge for Europe running out of steam. Should Manchester City defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final this month, an eighth-place finish would secure qualification for the Conference League. Watkins' goal was his 75th in the league for Villa, taking him ahead of Gabriel Agbonlahor as the club's all-time top scorer in the Premier League era.

      • "content": "Lazio substitute Matias Vecino struck a stoppage-time equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at home to 10-man Juventus in the battle for Champions League qualifying places in Serie A on Saturday. Juve broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Randal Kolo Muani, who nodded past goalkeeper Christos Mandas, before Vecino levelled with a header six minutes into added time. Juventus had defender Pierre Kalulu sent off on the hour mark for a foul on striker Taty Castellanos. With two games left, Juventus once more missed a chance to strengthen their grip on fourth place after they were held 1-1 by seventh-placed Bologna last weekend. Juve are now level on 64 points with Lazio in fifth and a point above sixth-placed AS Roma, who can move above them into fourth when they visit third-placed Atalanta (68) on Monday. Juventus have won only two of their last six league games. Lazio, who are on a seven-game unbeaten league run, had their first attempt on target through Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in the third minute but his low effort at the near post was kept out by goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio. The first half was largely short on action after that but following the break Weston McKennie crossed from the left and French forward Kolo Muani put the visitors in front. However, Igor Tudor's side were down to 10 men shortly afterwards when Kalulu was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Castellanos. Lazio were on the front foot from then on and Juve's Manuel Locatelli had to clear Pedro's effort with about 15 minutes left before Di Gregorio saved Mario Gila's header after a corner. The hosts were then awarded a penalty just before the end after Juventus keeper brought Castellanos down chasing after the ball near the goal line on the right side of the box. However, the referee reversed his decision after a VAR check showed the Argentina forward was offside. Di Gregorio then made another great save to keep out a Castellanos header late in added time but had no chance when Vecino pounced on a rebound to score from close range. Juve were still without suspended striker Kenan Yildiz and only had nine players on the bench, with midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and defender Andrea Cambiaso also out injured.",

      • "content": "SOUTHAMPTON, England :Southampton gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer about with a surprise 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Saturday that saw the rock bottom team avoid tying Derby County as the worst Premier League side in history. Pep Guardiola's City remained third in the table on 65 points with two games remaining in their bid for Champions League qualification. Newcastle United and Chelsea, who meet on Sunday, are only two points behind. Nottingham Forest, who also have a game in hand, trail by four. Brentford's pursuit of a first-ever European qualification gained strength with their 1-0 victory over already-relegated Ipswich Town, while Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep them within touching distance of playing in Europe next season. Fulham's hopes of European football next season are fading fast, however, after they slipped to a fourth Premier League defeat in five games with a 3-1 loss to Everton. Already-relegated Southampton had looked likely to equal Derby County's season-low tally of 11 points in 2007-08, but the draw moved them to 12 as their fans at a sun-drenched St Mary's Stadium sung loudly in celebration. Manchester City thoroughly dominated with 26 shots to the home side's two, but Southampton defended in numbers, particularly in the dying minutes, to deny them. Their game plan drew criticism from City's Ruben Diaz. \"It's frustrating to play against a team like them. They don't even try to play, just wasting time the whole game,\" Diaz told Sky Sports. \"I don't even feel like they want to play the game or win the game. They are just sitting around. We tried every way. We had chances but we didn't score.\" Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was proud of his team. \"We've had a tough, tough season, we've had tough Monday mornings after heavy defeats,\" Ramsdale told Sky Sports. \"We spoke about trying to be respectful and giving our all for the football club. Today we put smiles on the Southampton fans' faces. It's just a relief to be honest.\" At Portman Road, Brentford won their fourth in a row on a first-half header by Kevin Schade to leave them eighth in the table with 55 points, while Ipswich are 18th. Schade scored in the 18th minute when he met Bryan Mbeumo's corner and steered the ball into the far corner. \"Incredible pride to be part of this group of players and staff. So difficult to win four games in a row,\" Brentford manager Thomas Frank told the BBC. LASER FOCUSED \"I see a strong team on form, we have got the momentum which is important. We are close to finishing eighth which would be the best position ever in the league. We are laser focused.\" At Wolverhampton, goals from Danny Welbeck and substitute Brajan Gruda saw Brighton move up one place to ninth, level on 55 points with eighth-placed Brentford. Wolves fell to 14th. Should Manchester City defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final this month, an eighth-place league finish would secure qualification for the Conference League. \"I think we were up against a good side and they're in good form. We had a gameplan and we played it out well,\" Welbeck told Premier League Productions. Brighton were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute for a foul by Matheus Cunha on Mats Wieffer, and Welbeck stepped up to put the ball in the net for his 10th league goal this season. Brighton doubled their lead in the 85th minute as German Gruda scored his first goal for the south-coast club, delicately dinking the ball over onrushing keeper Jose Sa after being played in by Simon Adingra. Fulham's loss at Craven Cottage saw them remain 11th in the table with 51 points from 36 games, four points back of the top eight, while Everton climbed one spot to 13th. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham a deserved lead in the first half with a powerful header before Vitaliy Mykolenko's deflected shot from the edge of the box levelled the score on the stroke of halftime. Two goals in three minutes from Michael Keane and Beto, who profited from an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, turned the game in Everton's favour in the second half and dealt their host's European dreams a heavy blow. \"It is the story of the last three or four games,\" Fulham manager Marco Silva told BBC. \"Goals have come from set-pieces. We have to be willing to fight, do our job well and we didn't. It's about concentration and focus.\" Bournemouth face Aston Villa in Saturday's late game.",

      • "content": "SEOUL: South Korea's former labor minister Kim Moon-soo was reinstated Saturday (May 10) as his conservative party's presidential candidate - the same day it revoked his nomination and attempted to replace him with a former prime minister . The People Power Party (PPP) has been in turmoil since its former president Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted after he declared martial law in December. Last week, Kim won the PPP's primary to run as its candidate in presidential elections on June 3. But before dawn Saturday, his nomination was cancelled, and the party said it was instead nominating career bureaucrat Han Duck-soo, 75, an ex-acting president who resigned last week to launch a presidential bid, initially as an independent. Han, also a former prime minister, and Kim had been in talks to merge their candidacies and unify the conservative base, to avoid an opposition landslide at the election, but those negotiations collapsed. Kim, 73, called the party's decision to cancel his candidacy a \"political coup\" and illegal. He then filed a court injunction to suspend the move which the Seoul Southern District Court held a roughly one-hour hearing to review. Late Saturday, the party announced that its members voted to reject the candidate switch, automatically reinstating Kim as the nominee. Kim's official registration is \"set to take place tomorrow\" with the National Election Commission, the party's interim leader Kwon Young-se said. Kwon said he will resign over his failure to unite conservatives behind a single candidate. Han, who officially joined the PPP on Saturday, said he humbly accepts the decision by \"the people and party members\". Kim thanked the party members and citizens, vowing to \"move forward to build a new and greater Republic of Korea\", adding \"everything will return to its rightful place\". SHATTERED INTERNAL DEMOCRACY The PPP's about-face came amid fears that not having a unified candidate could further weaken their chances in the election, as liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung widens his lead. But the last-minute shakeup proved controversial even within the PPP, with primary contenders criticising the leadership - one saying such a move would be unusual even in North Korea, and another calling on Han and ex-president Yoon to leave the party. Lee's Democratic Party had also gloated over the PPP's reversal, saying that after being responsible for Yoon's martial law, the party has now \"shattered internal democracy - leaving no justification for its continued existence\". Han has held a range of roles under both liberal and conservative administrations, including finance minister and ambassador to the United States. But as a former prime minister under Yoon, he has faced criticism for failing to prevent, and alleged complicity with, Yoon's martial law declaration. Kim shot to public attention as the only cabinet member who refused to bow in apology for failing to prevent Yoon's attempted suspension of civilian rule and for opposing his impeachment. Kim, also a former three-term lawmaker, spent around two decades as a labour and pro-democracy activist fighting military authoritarian regimes - including serving a jail term - but later said he shifted his views following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A National Barometer Survey released this week showed Lee - who currently faces multiple criminal trials - leading Kim 43 per cent to 29 per cent. In a separate match-up scenario, Lee held a 44 per cent to 34 per cent advantage over Han.",

      • "description": "From Paris to New York, AWDPI's mission to empower Asian women earns global recognition and catalyzes new action at CSW69. NEW YORK, May 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In March 2025, the global non-profit organization Asian Women Development Plan International (AWDPI) received two prestigious honors during the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at UN Headquarters in New York. AWDPI was awarded the Global Outstanding Women's Public Welfare Organization Award, while its Board Member, Ms. Stephanie Sun, received the Asian Outstanding Female Leadership Award. These accolades reflect the international community's recognition of AWDPI's leadership in promoting gender equality and the rising global influence of Asian women in public service. Five Years of Global Impact: Empowering Asian Women Worldwide Founded in 2020 by Ms. Yimar Yu, AWDPI evolved from its original founding program Avoice (Against Violence to Overseas Chinese Women Program). The organization works to eliminate gender-based violence and discrimination and to uplift Asian women through economic opportunity, political engagement, and cultural empowerment. Over the past five years, AWDPI has established a global footprint with offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, and Australia. Partnering with the United Nations, governments, academia, and private sector stakeholders, it has directly supported thousands of Asian women in more than 30 countries. Programs such as the Anti-Domestic Violence Support System and the Conference of Asian Women Development International are widely regarded as global models for innovation and cross-cultural impact in gender advocacy. A Powerful Voice at the United Nations AWDPI has participated in high-level dialogues and official parallel forums hosted by the United Nations, amplifying the call for equitable opportunities for Asian women. Its representatives have shared critical insights, proposed actionable policies, and strengthened interregional cooperation for sustainable development. Advocating in Paris: Championing China's Gender Equality Policy On March 5, AWDPI Board Member Ms. Yanping Wang, a delegate to the landmark 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, took the stage at the Femina Vox International Forum held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Speaking at the opening high-level roundtable, she reflected on the enduring global significance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—30 years on. In a compelling dialogue moderated by UNESCO Artist for Peace Dr. Guila Clara Kessous, Ms. Wang reaffirmed China's deep-rooted commitment to gender equality and inclusive development. She highlighted how the principles first enshrined in the Beijing Declaration continue to guide international cooperation on women's rights. \"Empowering women is synonymous with empowering all of humanity,\" she emphasized, calling on governments, private sector leaders, and civil society to re-energize their commitment to gender justice in the face of growing global challenges. Her remarks brought a powerful historical and policy perspective to the forum and were met with broad international resonance. Breaking Barriers: Stephanie Sun's Personal Journey of Leadership On March 17, during CSW69 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, AWDPI Board Member Stephanie Sun was invited to share her inspiring journey with her personal \"firsts\": including being the first one going to college and the first immigrant in her family, she became the first female immigrant in history to be appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania as Executive Director of the Governor's Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. She also made history by spearheading the historic progress of the Pennsylvania election system moving from bilingual to trilingual, adding the first Asian language, Chinese, secured by the federal Voting Rights Act, and by becoming the first Asian to serve as Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, part of the largest civil rights organizations in the U.S. Despite systemic challenges historically faced by Asian communities, Ms. Sun's story is a powerful example of individual resilience driving systemic change. She encouraged Asian women to become agents of transformation and to create 'countless firsts' in public life. Her speech was met with great enthusiasm and was interrupted several times by resounding applause. For her outstanding contributions to public policy and civic engagement, she received the Asian Outstanding Female Leadership Award. Other honorees at the event included Nobel laureate Ms. Youyou Tu, and former Secretary Ms. Elaine Chao. Shaping the Global Gender Agenda: AWDPI at the New York Action Initiative On March 19, AWDPI played a key role in CSW69's parallel forum on Women's Economic Empowerment. Ms. Yuting Deng, AWDPI's U.S. Representative, presented findings from global projects and urged policymakers to take meaningful steps to address the needs of overseas Asian women. Building on this engagement, AWDPI joined international delegates in signing the New York Action Initiative, symbolizing cross-border solidarity and shared commitment to women's empowerment. Throughout CSW69, Ms. Tiantian Wu, Director of AWDPI's U.S. National Office, led AWDPI's strategic policy engagement and multilateral dialogue to amplify the voices of Asian women in global gender discussions. \"Every registration table is a site of advocacy, and every coffee break holds the potential for change,\" she noted. Through sustained and intentional presence, AWDPI ensured that the priorities of Asian women were meaningfully integrated into international gender equality agendas. A Call to Action: Lighting the Path Ahead At the award ceremony of CSW69's parallel forum, held at the United Nations Headquarters, AWDPI founder Ms. Yimar Yu reaffirmed the organization's commitment to empowering Asian women, advancing their participation and leadership in global progress. She extended her sincere appreciation to UN Gender Equality Advocate Ms. Hawa Taylor-Kamara Diallo, who also served as the award presenter, for her decades-long leadership in fostering cross-cultural understanding and advancing global gender equality. From Paris to New York, AWDPI has been a consistent contributor to global gender equality efforts and human rights through sustained multilateral engagement. As a signatory to the New York Action Initiative, AWDPI continues to champion inclusive development through gender-responsive advocacy and international cooperation. \"Where fragments of light converge, they will ultimately illuminate the future of human civilization.\" —AWDPI AWDPI calls upon partners, media, and allies worldwide to join in advancing a more just, inclusive, and gender-equal world.",

      • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday (May 10) after US pressure and diplomacy, announcing a sudden stop to a conflict that had seemed to be spiralling alarmingly. But within hours, violations were reported from the main cities of Indian Kashmir, the territory that had borne the brunt of four days of fighting. Blasts were heard in Srinagar and Jammu . Projectiles and flashes were seen in the night sky over Jammu, similar to the events of the previous evening, according to authorities, residents and Reuters witnesses. Military spokespeople in both countries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The fighting had been the worst between the old South Asian enemies in nearly three decades and threatened to erupt into a full-scale war in one of the world's most volatile and densely populated regions. There were brief fears that nuclear arsenals might come into play as Pakistan's military said a top body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet. But the defence minister said no such meeting was scheduled, hours after a night of heavy fighting in which the two countries targeted each other’s military bases and the combined civilian death toll rose to 66. \"Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect,\" Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar posted on X. \"Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!\" The Indian foreign secretary said the two countries' military chiefs had spoken to each other and agreed that all fighting would stop at 5pm Indian time (1130 GMT), without using the word \"ceasefire\". US President Donald Trump posted: \"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.\" HOTLINES AND DIPLOMACY Dar told the broadcaster Geo News that military channels and hotlines between India and Pakistan had been activated, and three dozen countries had helped to facilitate the agreement. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, India's top diplomat, said the two military chiefs would speak to each other again on May 12. On Wednesday, India had attacked what it said was \"terrorist infrastructure\" in Pakistani Kashmir and Pakistan, two weeks after 26 people were killed in an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir. Pakistan denied India's accusations that it was involved in the attack. Days of cross-border fire, shelling and drone and missile attacks followed. Despite the truce, two Indian government sources told Reuters that the punitive measures announced by India and reciprocated by Pakistan, such as trade suspension and visa cancellations, would remain in place for now. The sources also said the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing pact that India suspended after the Kashmir attack, would remain in abeyance. The Indian foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir, and the two national security advisors over the course of 48 hours. TALKS TO FOLLOW AT NEUTRAL VENUE In a post on X, Rubio commended Modi and Sharif on the agreement, which he said included not only an immediate ceasefire but also the start of talks on \"a broad set of issues at a neutral site”. Jaishankar said India had consistently maintained a firm and \"uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations\" and would continue to do so. News of the ceasefire was greeted with relief on both sides of the border, and Pakistan's airports authority said its airspace had been fully reopened. Omar Abdullah, chief minister of Indian Kashmir, which bore the brunt of the fighting, welcomed the truce but added: \"If it had happened 2-3 days ago, the lives we lost would not have been lost.\" Pakistani news channels showed tanks returning from the border. \"Both Pakistan and India need to lift their large populations on virtually every measure of socio-economic development,\" said Ehsan Malik, CEO of the Pakistan Business Council. \"We are happy that a ceasefire will help both the governments to focus on this priority.\" Shuja Nawaz, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council's South Asia Center, said the Indus treaty would figure prominently in the impending talks \"after a decent interval, which allows both governments to claim credit for what they've achieved until now\". India and Pakistan have been locked in a dispute over Kashmir ever since they were born at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan both rule part of Kashmir but claim it in full. They have gone to war three times, including twice over Kashmir, alongside numerous smaller outbreaks of fighting. India blames Pakistan for an insurgency in its part of Kashmir that began in 1989 and has killed tens of thousands. It also blames Pakistani Islamist militant groups for attacks elsewhere in India. Pakistan rejects both charges. It says it only provides moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri separatists.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Tampines industrial building that was engulfed in flames has suffered fire damage and will be closed off as a precautionary measure, said the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) late on Saturday (May 10) in response to CNA's queries. While a BCA spokesperson said the building, which caught fire on Friday, \"remains structurally safe\", an inspection indicated damage to parts of the reinforced concrete structures and the steel roof of the two-storey building located at 18 Tampines Street 92. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) completed its damping down operations - applying water to burnt surfaces to halt any rekindling of fire - on Saturday morning. This enabled BCA engineers to gain entry and conduct a detailed site inspection. SCDF had also said in earlier Facebook updates that the building had three floors. The BCA spokesperson noted that the roof trusses showed signs of deformation from prolonged heat exposure, and that there was spalling observed on several columns and slabs. \"Despite these signs of fire damage, there was no significant structural deformation to the reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns, hence the building remains structurally safe.\" The building's guardhouse, carpark shelter and neighbouring unit were not affected by the fire, added the spokesperson. BCA said it will issue an order to the building's owner to close off the whole building, excluding the guardhouse and carpark shelter, as a \"precautionary measure\". \"The building owner has also been instructed to appoint a professional engineer to carry out a detailed investigation into the structural condition, recommend immediate safety measures to mitigate risks, and propose permanent rectification works,\" added the spokesperson. DARK PLUMES OF SMOKE AND ASH The fire had sent dark plumes of smoke and ash into the sky, and sparked evacuations from nearby workplaces and a school on Friday. SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at 12.50pm that day and that the fire involved textile items. It deployed five water jets, an aerial monitor from a combined platform ladder and two unmanned firefighting machines. \"A person from the affected premises was assessed by an SCDF paramedic for a minor cut on his arm. The person declined to be sent to the hospital,\" it said in a Facebook update on Friday. A photo on SCDF's Facebook page showed smoke billowing out of the windows of TC Homeplus, a company which distributes homeware and homelinen. Other videos and photos show thick black smoke rising from the location, which is near SAFRA Tampines and not far from Tampines Mall.",

      • "content": "LONDON : Fulham's hopes of European football next season are fading fast after they slipped to a fourth Premier League defeat in five games with a 3-1 loss to Everton at Craven Cottage on Saturday as the visitors came from behind to win. Fulham stay 11th in the table with 51 points from their 36 games, four points behind eighth-placed Brentford, while Everton climb one spot to 13th with 42. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham a deserved lead in the first half with a powerful header before Vitaliy Mykolenko’s deflected shot from the edge of the box levelled the score on the stroke of halftime. Two goals in three minutes from Michael Keane and Beto, who profited from an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, turned the game in Everton's favour and dealt their host's European dreams a heavy blow. The hosts took the lead with Jimenez's first goal in eight games as Emile Smith Rowe crossed from the left and the striker rose above Mykolenko to head past keeper Jordan Pickford. Harry Wilson flashed a shot just wide for Fulham, while at the other end Jack Harrison fired straight at Leno with a good chance from the edge of the area. Wilson forced another good save from Pickford low to his left, but Everton drew level on the stroke of halftime. Leno's punch from a corner was weak and Mykolenko's shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off Andreas Pereira and flew into the net. The visitors went ahead after 70 minutes when Dwight McNeil’s deep corner was headed home at the back post by Keane. Leno’s howler then allowed Everton to score a third three minutes later. Carlos Alcaraz led a quick counter-attack for the away side and after he slipped a pass to Beto, the striker’s first-time shot was tame but went through Leno's hands. Fulham then had a penalty appeal waved away in the dying seconds for a Mykolenko handball. Referee Darren England was called over to the pitch-side screen but stuck with his original decision.",

      • "description": "SHANGHAI, May 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Skyline Therapeutics, an innovation-driven clinical-stage gene therapy company focused on developing unique and novel solutions for rare and severe diseases, today announced a late-breaking abstract presentation on SKG1108, its investigational optogenetic gene therapy for Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), at the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ASGCT) 28th Annual Meeting (May 13–17, 2025, New Orleans, Louisiana). ASGCT 2025 Late-Breaking AbstractAbstract Title: SKG1108: Optogenetic Gene Therapy with AAV-BWLP for Visual Restoration in Retinitis Pigmentosa via a Single Intravitreal InjectionAbstract No.:2023Date & Time: May 13, 2025 | 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM CT About SKG1108SKG1108 is an optogenetic adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy vector designed to restore vision in RP patients with photoreceptor degeneration. Its novel design combines a proprietary intravitreal capsid and a uniquely engineered Broad Wavelength Light-sensing Protein (BWLP) comprising opsins of multiple sources, which demonstrated strong and broad wave-length range light-responsive activity in in vitro electrophysiological studies. In in vivo studies, a single intravitreal injection of SKG1108 showed superior efficacy and safety in rd1 mice, with striking functional improvements in visual pathway electrophysiology, light perception and visual acuity behavioral tests. The therapy delivers a single-stranded DNA payload encoding light-activatable proteins to the retina, bypassing the need to target specific genetic mutations. By generating new photo-sensing cells, SKG1108 aims to restore visual function in late-stage RP patients, regardless of their underlying genetic defect. SKG1108 received U.S. FDA Orphan Drug Designation (ODD) in September 2024. About Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a type of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) linked to mutations in over 100 different genes, leading to progressive vision loss that typically begins with night blindness (rod degeneration), followed by tunnel vision and eventual legal blindness due to near-total photoreceptor death (rod and cone degeneration). Currently, no effective treatments worldwide can effectively slow, halt, or reverse photoreceptor degeneration, and existing gene-specific therapies only apply to a small subset of RP patients. SKG1108's mutation-agnostic optogenetic approach—designed to restore vision independent of genetic defects—has the potential to become a transformative treatment for the vast majority of RP patients, including those with advanced disease. • "content": "MADRID : This weekend's 'El Clasico' will go a long way to deciding the destination of LaLiga and Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid side will need to play a complete game to defeat league leaders Barcelona, the Italian said on Saturday. Real have a four-point gap to make up with four games remaining if they are to retain the title and for Ancelotti they will need to get everything right to have a chance on Sunday. \"In this type of game you have to do things well. Barcelona are used to keeping the opponent in their own area, but no team is perfect,\" he said. \"It's a game where there's a lot at stake and to win you have to manage everything well, defend well, attack well. We have to play a complete game.\" With so much at stake against their great rivals, Ancelotti will have little trouble getting his players fired up. \"It's not difficult to motivate the players because it's the type of match for which the players already come out motivated and with a lot of confidence,\" he said. \"Playing with Barcelona is special. It will be the last 'El Clasico' of the season because Barca are not in the Club World Cup. The speculation surrounding Ancelotti's future has only increased with the news that former Real player Xabi Alonso will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season but, whatever happens, Real Madrid will remain dear to the Italian. \"What happens around us has not affected us at all,\" he said before adding: \"With this club the honeymoon does not end. \"Real Madrid and AC Milan before it are clubs that stay in my heart because of the time I've been here and because of the relationships. The honeymoon with Madrid is going to be until the last day of my life. \"I have read that he (Alonso) is leaving Bayer Leverkusen. He has done an incredible job and has the doors open because he has proven to be one of the best in the world.\" Real have lost all three previous games against Barcelona in this campaign, including the recent Copa del Rey final, and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage against Arsenal having won the competition last season. However, Ancelotti still regards this term as a decent campaign. \"It's been a good league and a good season,\" he said. \"You need continuity to be able to win it, or to be close explains very well what tomorrow's game is going to be. We both have a lot at stake. Barca will have more chances than us, but if we win it will still be all to play for.",

      • "content": "TIRANA :Welshman Joshua Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers) set a time-trial pace even race favourite Primoz Roglic, could not match to win stage two of the Giro d'Italia by one second on Saturday. Tarling secured his first Grand Tour stage victory after the 21-year-old Briton had a nervous wait to see Roglic come so close, but the Slovenian had to settle for second place with the consolation of taking over the leader's pink jersey. Australian Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) had set the early pace but came in third, three second behind Tarling in the short 13.7km individual time-trial in Tirana. \"To win today is definitely exceptional,\" Tarling said. Vine crashed on Friday's opening stage, but took the lead from Italian Edoardo Affini, before Tarling showed his time-trial prowess. Tarling came third in the 2023 world road time-trial and, racing his first Giro, had to sit and watch as the main contenders attempted to steal the win. \"Waiting for the other riders to complete the course was hard too, I don't want to do it again,\" Tarling said. \"It was long. I was afraid of everyone among the favourites.\" All eyes were on 2023 winner Roglic, and with reigning champion Tadej Pogacar deciding to focus on the Tour de France, the 35-year-old Slovenian is expected to become the oldest ever Giro winner. Roglic, however, fell short, and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was well off the pace early in his ride. Van Aert beat Tarling to the bronze medal at last year's Olympic Games. Opening stage winner Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was last to go and despite pushing hard to the end, the Dane finished 12 seconds down in seventh place and lost the overall lead to Roglic by one second. Tarling, racing only his second Grand Tour having failed to finish last year's Vuelta A Espana, became the youngest rider to win a Giro time-trial. Sunday's stage three is the last time the riders will tackle the Albanian roads in this year's Giro, with a 160km ride that starts and finishes in Vlore.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) The cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was achieved after a call from the Pakistan DGMO Major General Kashif Abdullah to his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai early in the afternoon of Saturday. The former's offer to stop the firing and the air attacks was met with the response that India too would do the same, people directly familiar with the matter said. They added that while representatives from the US and various other countries had indeed spoken to top Indian officials including foreign minister S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval, there was no interaction between the foreign ministers of the two countries, nor between the NSAs. This was only fitting, the people said, pointing out that it all started with the terror attack at Pahalgam, which India responded to on the morning of May 7, with targeted strikes at nine terror hubs in Pakistan and PoK, and that since then, India has only been responding, and proportionately and responsibly, to Pakistan's escalation. HT learns that the US pushed Pakistan to cease hostilities and that its support for the IMF bailout package for Islamabad may have been conditional to this. The people said that there were no other aspects to the cessation of hostilities, and that there was no talk of a political dialogue or a meeting. Measures announced by India, including the country walking out of the Indus Water Treaty would remain, they added. The people said that the sole objective of Operation Sindoor was to strike at terror, and to send Pakistan a message that its sponsorship of terror would not go unpunished, adding that any future terror attack would be seen as an act of war. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) The Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan will 'remain in abeyance' despite the two sides reaching an agreement to declare de-escalation after four days of deadly fighting, according to MEA sources. According to sources, India's diplomatic measures against Pakistan, taken after the Pahalgam terror attack, will remain unchanged. According to the MEA sources,“there is no pre or post-condition of the ceasefire.”“There is no pre or post-condition of the ceasefire. The call was initiated from Pakistan. The Indus Water Treaty to remain in abeyance,” ANI quoted MEA sources as saying. “India's measures announced against Pakistan on April 23 remains in place,” Sources have said. India pulled out of the Indus Water Treaty in April and also announced a number of measures after a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam. Twenty six people, mostly tourists, were killed when terrorists opened fire at point-blank range in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). For past four days, India and Pakistan have exchanged fire. India carried out military strikes against Pakistan on May 7 , hitting nine terror infrastructure. Later, Pakistan resorted to cross-border firing and drone attacks on India territory. India and Pakistan have mutually agreed to a ceasefire to“stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea from 5 pm” on Saturday. Both countries confirmed the ceasefire agreement following US President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States had mediated talks between the two sides. In a brief statement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said,“The DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) of Pakistan called DGMO of India at 15.35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 1700 hours IST.” INDIA'S CRACKDOWN AGAINST PAKISTAN AFTER PAHALGAM ATTACK In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India announced a slew of diplomatic measures against Pakistan over its support to cross-border terrorism. India suspended the Indus Water Treaty , closed the integrated Check Post at Attari, suspended the visa services to Pakistani nationals and revoked existing visas. Apart from that, India also imposed a complete ban on all imports from Pakistan and halted the mail services between the two countries. India also banned the YouTube and Instagram channels of Pakistani artists. Access to Pakistani news outlets such as Dawn News, ARY News, Geo News, and others was also blocked. India also barred Pakistani ships from docking at any Indian port and vice versa. Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi were declared persona non grata and ordered to leave. India also reciprocally withdrew its own military advisors from Islamabad. While India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, all diplomatic measures imposed by New Delhi against Islamabad will remain in place, PTI quoted sources as saying. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) Chandigarh administration on Saturday withdraws its order to close shops by 7 pm, after India-Pakistan agreed on ceasefire amid ongoing tensions between the two nations. On Friday, May 9, the district administration had directed all shops and eateries in the city to shut by 7:00 PM as a precautionary measure. However, the order has now been withdrawn. “In light of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, the earlier request for the voluntary closure of shops and other establishments is hereby withdrawn. All shops and establishments are now permitted to operate as usual,” said Chandigarh district administration in a post on X. India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, halting all military operations across land, air, and sea. The directors general of military operations of India and Pakistan have agreed to stop all firings and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 5 pm, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced. The brief announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump said India and Pakistan had agreed to a \"full and immediate\" ceasefire after talks mediated by the US. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the ceasefire, saying it was better late than never. \"I welcome from the depths of my heart the announcement made by the Government of India spokesperson about restoration of ceasefire between India and Pakistan,\" Abdullah told reporters at his residence. \"Better late than never but had this ceasefire come two or three days earlier, perhaps the bloodshed we saw and the precious lives we lost, would have been safe,\" he added. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) India and Pakistan on Saturday decided to stop firing and military action on land and in the air from today, Foreign Secretary Vikrim Misri said on 10 May. There is, however, no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place, according to sources on the ceasefire decision. \"The DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) of Pakistan called DGMO of India at 15.35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 1700 hours IST,\" says foreign secretary Vikram Misri . Also Read | Indus Water Treaty to import ban: What happens to India's crackdowns against Pak The decision comes after contact had been established between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan to arrive at a ceasefire arrangement. Who are the DGMOs? DGMOs are senior officials of Indian Army, usually of the rank of Lieutenant General, responsible for overseeing all military operations in India and along its borders. The DGMO typically operates at the strategic and operational levels within the military hierarchy and report to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) The current DGMO of the Indian Army is Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai who assumed the position on October 25, 2024. Pakistan DGMO is Major General Kashif Abdullah. What is the role of DGMO? The DGMO position is integral to India's defense strategy, especially during periods of escalated tension. The officer is in direct communication with counterparts in other nations to manage and de-escalate potential conflicts, like in the case of India-Pakistan tensions since 22 April Pahalgam attack. The DGMO also formulates strategies and plans for military operations, including combat, counter-insurgency, and peacekeeping missions. The DGMO alos acts as a liaison between different branches of the armed forces (army, navy, air force) and other agencies for joint operations . He coordinates with intelligence agencies to integrate actionable intelligence into operational plans. In India, the DGMO manages sensitive border issues, including ceasefire agreements and cross-border tensions. Here is a break-up of DGMO roles? -Plan and oversee military operations, including counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism measures. -Maintain operational readiness of the Indian armed forces. -Coordinate with other defense wings and ministries. -Conduct weekly hotline talks with the Pakistani DGMO to maintain communication, especially during times of escalated tension. -Provide operational updates to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the Ministry of Defence. Why are DGMOs the go-to officers? The DGMO is supposed to be a military-to-military contact point . The idea is to build a degree of professional trust, during escalated situations. DGMO-level talks during peacetime serve asfirst step for communication. The DGMO position is integral to India's defense strategy, especially during periods of escalated tension. In situations of escalated tensions, it is the DGMOs who initiate communication to prevent escalation, clarify intentions, or address immediate concerns of both the countries. The DGMOs are aware of military activities of their respective countries and hence in a good position to address operational understandings, ceasefires and violations. Also Read | India, Pakistan to stop firing on land, sea and air: FS Vikram Misri In case of India-Pakistan tensions , DGMOs often have pre-existing mechanisms like hotlines or regular talks to manage tensions on the borders. DGMOs usually address technical issues including troop movements, artillery fire. DGMO reports to army chief and have access to top government leadership. They have quick access to critical information and cane take decisions quickly. India-Pakistan conflict The meeting took place following India's strikes at four airbases in Pakistan in the early hours of Saturday in reply to Pakistan's attack on 26 Indian locations , which the government confirmed during a media briefing on Saturday morning. Precision strikes were carried out on Pakistani military targets in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian, as well as radar sites at Pasrur and Sialkot aviation bases, using air-launched weapons from Indian fighter jets, Indian Army Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said during the briefing. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) The Indian government has flagged two fake X accounts impersonating senior Indian armed forces officers - Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army . The Press Information Bureau (PIB)'s fact-checking unit has issued a warning urging citizens not to engage with or share posts from these handles. The impersonating account of Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, operating under the handle @WingVyomikStan, falsely claims to represent her and has attracted over 28,000 followers. The profile bio reads:“Proudly serving in the skies, defending the nation with Air Force. Duty, Honor.” However, authorities have confirmed that this is not an official account. Another fake X profile targets Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, wrongly portraying her as active on the platform and describing her as“the first woman to lead the multi-national military Exercise Force 18.” Like the former, this account has surfaced in the wake of heightened public interest in military operations, particularly after India's launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7. Also Read | India-Pak ceasefire: Both nations agree to 'de-escalate' tension - What we know Responding to the spread of misinformation, the PIB Fact Check team posted on X: “There is NO official X handle of Wg. Cdr. Vyomika Singh & Col. Sofiya Qureshi. Both of these handles are fake. Stay vigilant. Rely only on official sources for authentic information.” Both women officers have recently become familiar faces during press briefings related to Operation Sindoor. Their growing visibility has made them targets for impersonation, especially on social media platforms experiencing surges in engagement during national security events. A postgraduate in biochemistry, she was commissioned via the Officers Training Academy and comes from a military family - her grandfather served in the Indian Army. Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, an IAF pilot , is known for her expertise in flying Cheetah and Chetak helicopters in high-risk zones, including India's most challenging terrains. Her operational profile and public-facing role during recent defence briefings underscore the rising presence of women in combat and command roles across India's military services.
