      • "content": "Prince Harry said on Friday he wanted reconciliation with the British royal family, but his father King Charles will not speak to him over a row about his security.Harry said he did not know how long the monarch, who has cancer, would live.Hours after losing a court battle with the British government over his police protection, Harry gave an emotional interview to the BBC in which he said he did not think he would ever be able to bring his family back to Britain.“I would love reconciliation with my family,” Harry said. “Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile.”Harry stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States, where he lives in California with his American wife Meghan and their two children.Since leaving, he and Meghan have been highly critical of the royals in TV documentaries, an explosive interview with U.S. chat show host Oprah Winfrey and most notably in Harry’s best-selling biography “Spare.” The prince is barely on speaking terms with either his father or his elder brother, heir to the throne Prince William. In the meantime, Buckingham Palace revealed last year that Charles had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, although aides have been upbeat about how his treatment is progressing. In response to the BBC interview, Buckingham Palace made no reference to his comments about his father or reconciliation. But a palace spokesperson said all the issues surrounding the prince’s police protection “have been examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, with the same conclusion reached on each occasion.”Harry’s comments came after he unsuccessfully sought to overturn a decision by the Home Office – the ministry responsible for policing – which in 2020 decided he would not automatically receive personal police protection in Britain after leaving royal life. The prince told the BBC that he was “pretty gutted about the decision,” adding: “We thought it was going to go our way.”Harry, who has previously said the royal institution had sacrificed him to protect other senior members, said he believed the decision over his security had been made to exert control over him, blaming his father for not doing more.“I have had it described to me, once people knew about the facts, that this is an old-fashioned, good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up. And that’s what it feels like,” he told the BBC.“There is a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands. Ultimately ... this whole thing could be resolved through him, not necessarily by intervening, but by stepping aside, allowing the experts to do what is necessary.”In its ruling, the Court of Appeal said it was “perhaps predictable” Harry would lose his automatic police protection when he exited royal life, and that while he might disagree with the body that made that decision, it was not unlawful.Harry said some of his family would never forgive him for writing his book, and he accepted that he might not be able to bring his children, Archie and Lilibet, back to his homeland.“I love my country, I always have done despite what some people in that country have done. I miss the UK. I miss parts of the UK, of course I do. And I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show ... my children my homeland,” he said. The post Prince Harry wants reconciliation with royals but says King Charles not speaking to him appeared first on The Fiji Times.",

      • "content": "The Western Force have slipped out of the Super Rugby Pacific’s top six following a comprehensive 40-19 defeat at the hands of the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland last night. The match was headlined by a vintage performance from All Blacks star Beauden Barrett, whose commanding second-half display proved decisive. Trailing just 12–7 at the interval, the Force had been well in contention after a competitive opening period. However, Barrett turned back the clock after the break, orchestrating the Blues’ attack with precision. The playmaker finished the match with three try assists, two line-break assists, and a clinical demonstration of game management as the defending champions pulled away. Blues winger Cole Forbes crossed for a brace of tries, contributing to a dominant second stanza by the home side. For the Force, there were positives in Harry Potter’s strong running game and the much-anticipated return of veteran Kurtley Beale, who marked his comeback with a try. The contest began with intensity, with Force captain Jeremy Williams making an immediate impact through a stolen lineout and a thunderous tackle to repel an early Blues attack. Despite the Force’s resistance, the Blues opened the scoring through Marcel Renata, followed shortly thereafter by Forbes, who capitalised on sustained pressure inside the visitors’ 22. The Force responded through Carlo Tizzano just before halftime, ensuring the match remained in the balance. Yet any hopes of a Force resurgence were quickly dashed in the second half, as Barrett’s deft hands set up AJ Lam within moments of the restart. Though Beale’s try briefly narrowed the margin, the Blues maintained control. Further tries from Sam Darry McWhannell and a second from Forbes widened the gap significantly. Nic Dolly crossed late to offer the Force a glimmer of hope, but a final try to Josh Beehre sealed the result. Speaking after the match, Jeremy Williams acknowledged the team’s effort but lamented costly lapses. “We fought hard but let them get away in patches. They just valued the ball more,” he said. The win propels the Blues into sixth place on the ladder, while the Force will need to regroup swiftly as their finals aspirations now face significant pressure.",

      • "content": "Today is the 2025 Australian federal election, the Labor Party is in pole position to govern again in the Pacific region’s largest economy.Australia has a fast-growing Pasifika population, with approximately 337,000 people with Pacific Island heritage calling the country home. However, despite their increasing presence, Pacific Islanders continue to lag behind both economically and socially, and campaigners argue that public policy decisions fail to account for their needs. So what does the election mean for the Pacific population?Climate advocacy group 350.org’s Pacific campaigner Jacynta Fa’amau told RNZ Pacific that the survival of their ancestral homes is a growing concern among young Pacific Islanders.Fa’amau said that, on the whole, Pasifika people living in Australia, like most minority groups, are wrapped up in the cost of living crisis.“Pasifika people are still earning less than the general population despite working similar hours,” she said.“There are also many barriers that Pacific people face when it comes to accessing education due to citizen status.”Much like Aotearoa, Australia’s Pasifika population is concentrated mostly in urban areas, with around 20 percent residing in Western Sydney alone.Australian media have stressed the importance of Western Sydney to each party’s political calculus in their reporting. That urban presence overlaps conveniently with the Greens’ target demographic, as they fight to keep their metro seats, such as Brisbane and Melbourne, while seeking to expand their foothold. With that in mind, the Greens have been inclined to campaign more on hot-button Pasifika issues, such as foreign aid and migration.New South Wales (NSW) senator David Shoebridge told RNZ Pacific that he believes his Pasifika constituents notice a lack of respect on Australia’s part.“Too often, when Australia looks to the Pacific, they look at it through a narrow economic lens. [The Greens] see the future of the Pacific as a partnership.”Pacific foreign aidOverall, aid was increased by 2.7 percent in the 2024-2025 federal budget, with the Pacific aid program now making up over 42 percent of Australia’s overall aid.Despite that, overseas development assistance has dropped from A$223 billion in 2023 to A$212b in 2024, or equivalent to 19 cents for every A$100 in national income, according to Oxfam. As a result, the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) ranks Australia just 28th out of 32 developed nations.Meanwhile, Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton boasted the previous Liberal-National Party (LNP) government’s “Pacific Step-up”, which aimed to position Australia as a go-to partner for Pacific nations. On Wednesday, the LNP released a policy costing that reduced aid by A$813m over four years, but this did not include the Pacific.”Days before, Dutton pledged A$21 billion in new defence spending over five years.Fa’amau said that the “big brother” role that Australia plays in the region often comes at the region’s expense.“With one hand, [the government] celebrate its contributions to climate finance and with the other it approves new coal mines,” she said.“Climate migration pathways have also come at the cost of sovereignty and security for some islands.”Shoebridge said that both governments consistently fail on their foreign aid obligations.“We have seen the Labor government refuse to come close to meeting their platform of increasing federal aid, and what we have seen in just the last few months is a catastrophic drop off of aid in our region, with huge cuts from the United States.”He said the Greens would push for Australia to increase their foreign aid to 0.7 percent of GDP within the decade. The post Australian federal election toady – what does it mean for Pacific Islands? appeared first on The Fiji Times.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK , May 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Interlace, a pioneering financial innovation platform bridging traditional (Web2) and decentralized (Web3) ecosystems, is making a high-impact debut at Token2049, the world's largest cryptocurrency conference. The event draws more than 15,000 global Web3 leaders, investors, developers, and policymakers to the heart of the Middle East's burgeoning digital economy. As the MENA region solidifies its status as a strategic launchpad for blockchain and digital finance, Interlace is leveraging Token2049 to highlight its global ambitions and regional integration efforts. Through a combination of keynote speeches, panel participation, side events, and interactive showcases, the company will spotlight its technological breakthroughs, regulatory strategies, and innovative Web3 solutions designed to advance financial inclusion and digital infrastructure. Token2049 has cemented its position as the premier global platform for blockchain dialogue and innovation. With MENA emerging as a magnet for crypto and fintech enterprises—thanks to its progressive regulatory framework and strong investor base —the event provides fertile ground for companies like Interlace to scale their operations in high-growth markets. Driving Web3 Compliance and Strategy in the Middle East Michael Wu , Founder and CEO of Interlace, was recently invited to speak at the event Mastering Web3 Finance and Compliance: Blockchain & Beyond , where he joined a panel discussion exploring regulatory frameworks and emerging trends in the Middle East's Web3 ecosystem. Drawing on Interlace's extensive global experience, Wu provided a deep dive into the region's compliance landscape. He emphasized the UAE's regulatory efficiency as a strategic advantage for Web3 companies, stating: \"In MENA, it takes only a few months to obtain a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license, whereas the same process can take up to two years in Singapore . In the United States , conflicting federal and state regulations create persistent uncertainty for businesses.\" This favorable regulatory environment, he noted, has enabled Interlace to accelerate its expansion into the Middle Eastern market. Wu also outlined Interlace's proactive compliance strategy, highlighting early regulatory investment as a foundation for building long-term competitive advantages. \"We've secured key licenses—including MSB (Money Services Business), MSO (Money Service Operator), and VASP—across major markets such as Hong Kong , the U.S., and Europe ,\" he shared. He stressed the importance of integrating technology with compliance, citing the use of biometric solutions to streamline Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures. This approach not only ensures regulatory adherence but also enhances user accessibility. \"Compliance is not a cost,\" Wu asserted. \"It's the foundation of brand trust. For institutional partners and investors, regulatory compliance is non-negotiable—and critical for sustainable growth.\" Addressing the convergence of traditional finance and Web3, Wu presented Interlace's multi-license model as a blueprint for cross-border innovation. \"Our crypto payment card enables seamless interoperability between on-chain digital assets and off-chain consumer transactions,\" he explained. \"This functionality requires a high degree of cross-jurisdictional compliance.\" Wu concluded by sharing that Interlace is actively expanding its footprint in the Middle East , bringing its regulatory expertise and compliance technology to support the region's rapidly evolving blockchain infrastructure. Unveiling Innovation at Premier Side Events Beyond the main conference, Interlace will engage audiences at high-profile side events including 1001 Crypto Nights, Gilded Mirage, and the Hack Seasons Conferencei . These gatherings delve into themes such as the convergence of legacy finance with decentralized protocols and the region's unique role in accelerating Web3 adoption. Interlace will showcase its Card-as-a-Service (CaaS) API solutions tailored for the PayFi sector, as well as its custom-designed physical banking cards —which double as exclusive, limited-time gift cards. These cards demonstrate real-time \"on-chain to off-chain\" transaction capabilities , offering attendees a tangible experience of seamless Web3-enabled payments. A Strategic Leap Toward Global and Regional Impact Interlace's presence at Token2049 is more than a product showcase—it represents a pivotal step in the company's global expansion and MENA market penetration . As the company deepens its engagement in the region, it aims to collaborate with local institutions to build robust, inclusive digital financial ecosystems. Wu reflected on the significance of the Middle East in shaping the future of blockchain finance: \"The Middle East is rapidly evolving from an energy stronghold into a center of digital innovation. Its open regulatory approach and dynamic capital environment make it a strategic region for Web3 transformation. At Interlace, we're committed to co-creating resilient financial infrastructure with local partners—enabling businesses and users to fully benefit from the potential of blockchain technology. We see MENA as a future global benchmark for Web3 applications.\" SOURCE Interlace",

      • "content": "Naduri Goat Farm, located a few kilometres from the Sigatoka Research Station in Nadroga, was producing goat milk commercially. This was in an article published by The Fiji Times on February 15, 1995.The man behind the venture was Marika Bavia, a research officer with the goat section at the research station.Mr Bavia began his venture on his return from a two-week trip to the US, where he visited similar projects.Although he was impressed with what he saw, he said he still had doubts about the viability of such a project in Fiji.He decided, however, to run a trial at Sigatoka on seven goats.According to Mr Bavia, the kids were weaned in September and the goats had stopped producing milk when he left for the US.“I fed the goats with breadfruit leaves, mango leaves, and corn leaves mixed with supplementary feed,” Mr Bavia said.“Two weeks later, I found that the goats’ udders had started to fill with milk again.”“Encouraged by this result, we decided to step up our efforts to improve production.“We started milking the goats and consuming the milk.“We also built a milking shed and a feed shed on our three-and-one-half-acre farm. At present, we can only milk two at a time.”Although the goats were milked from October the previous year, he said the animals were still giving milk as if they had just “kidded”.“They are producing between two to four pints of milk per goat per day.”To prove they were serious about the venture, he said they registered their dairy shed with the Ministry of Primary Industries to become the only registered goat dairy farm in Fiji.Mr Bavia said selling milk was providing the farm with extra income.“This is the money that all the other goat farmers in the country are missing out on. Goat farms in Fiji were set up only for the purpose of producing meat.“In our case, we are getting milk for our own consumption and money for our association.”He said he could not find any reason why other goat farmers could not follow their example.“Goats are very easy to handle. When they are tame and used to being milked, there is no need to tie their legs down. All they need is food to keep them quiet.”He said there was a demand for goat milk in the Sigatoka Valley, but due to the small number of goats being milked, they were restricting their supply to farm members only.Goat milk, Mr Bavia said, was an ideal food for the entire family and although some people may not agree with him, he believed goat milk tasted better than cow milk.Marika Bavia, chairman of Naduri Goat Farm in the Sigatoka Valley is seen milking one of seven goats in the trial to determine the amount of milk a goat can produce. • "content": "SURABAYA, Indonesia , May 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Breast cancer remains one of the leading health concerns in Indonesia and ranks as the third deadliest cancer after lung and liver cancer. According to the Global Cancer Observatory, breast cancer accounts for 66,271 new cases (16.2%) out of a total of 408,661 new cancer cases reported in Indonesia and has claimed the lives of more than 22,000 individuals. 1 The high mortality rate associated with breast cancer in Indonesia remains a significant public health concern, driven by multiple challenges. In addition to the prevalence of late-stage diagnoses, diagnostic accuracy is often compromised by suboptimal image quality. Healthcare institutions require powerful mammography solutions that can effectively phase out these uncertainties and provide patients reassurance through reliable and proven diagnostic capabilities. At the annual event of Indonesian Women Imaging Society, Siemens Healthineers has unveiled the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant, a groundbreaking mammography system designed to transform breast imaging in Indonesia . Featuring a 50-degree tomosynthesis acquisition completed in under five seconds 2 , the system delivers exceptional diagnostic accuracy. It is designed to support healthcare providers with enhanced precision, streamlined workflows, and efficient diagnostic processes—offering women greater clarity and confidence in their breast health checks. \"In a country where many breast cancer cases are diagnosed too late, this technology represents a tangible opportunity to shift the paradigm toward early detection. MAMMOMAT B.brilliant was developed with women's wellbeing in mind. It enables radiologists a clearer view of complex cases and supports more confident clinical decisions—ultimately leading to faster diagnoses and better patient outcomes,\" said Alfred Fahringer , President Director of Siemens Healthineers Indonesia. MAMMOMAT B.brilliant sets a new standard in image quality for both Digital Breast Tomosynthesis and Full-Field Digital Mammography (FFDM). PlatinumTomo also includes a new state-of-the-art detector next to 50° tomo, flying focal spot and PREMIA. This combination delivers exceptional depth resolution and outstanding in-plane clarity—offering diagnostic precision unmatched in the industry. Designed with both radiographer ergonomics and patient comfort in mind, the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant features intelligent, efficient, and patient-centric designs. Its state-of-the-art technologies enable radiographers to tailor their workflow and positioning techniques to suit individual patient needs and clinical scenarios. By minimizing physical strain and allowing radiographers to fully concentrate on patient care, the system promotes a more comfortable working environment—while helping to alleviate anxiety for women during the examinations. \"The introduction of MAMMOMAT B.brilliant marks an important advancement in women's health imaging in Indonesia . Its ability to support early, precise detection is aligned with our society's mission to empower radiologists and improve breast cancer outcomes through innovation,\" said Prof. Dr. dr. Lina Choridah, Sp.Rad (K), Chairwoman of Indonesian Women Imaging Society. With the introduction of the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant, Siemens Healthineers reaffirms its commitment to advancing healthcare in Indonesia by introducing cutting-edge technology to address clinical demands and improve patient well-being. This innovation marks a significant step forward in supporting the nation's efforts to enhance breast cancer detection and improve outcomes for women across the country. • "content": "SINGAPORE , May 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Latest population studies have cast new light on genetic influences on women's reproductive lifespans and possible markers for the onset of chronic diseases. Evidence is growing that conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and neurodegenerative disorders are associated with reduced ovarian reserve, which refers to the number of healthy eggs remaining in a woman's ovaries as she ages. In contrast, extended ovarian function appears to correlate with general good health and the possibility that greater reproductive success is an indicator of longevity. The complex genetic interplay between the onset of menstruation and menopause came into sharp focus today at the 2025 Congress of the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE) in Singapore . In a keynote address to the Congress, Professor Joop Laven , a world expert in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, suggested reproductive lifespan was associated with \"survival\". He is the Professor of Reproductive Medicine at Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam in The Netherlands , Past President of the Dutch Society of Reproductive Medicine, and a lead figure in Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). The GWAS project has identified about 290 genetic determinants of reproductive ageing in a huge cohort of about 500,000 women of European ancestry. In the project, Professor Laven has explored the genetic basis of hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), along with premature ovarian insufficiency, menarche and menopause. At the ASPIRE Congress, Professor Laven said women with PCOS tended to have the most effective genetic variants for DNA repair providing a \"genetic advantage\" of fertility beyond the fourth decade of life, when most women have exhausted their natural supply of eggs. \"Studies show PCOS women have better DNA repair and therefore produce better embryos at a later age compared to controls, and they have an extended reproductive life span,\" he explained. \"Women with PCOS have issues getting pregnant earlier in life. This may reduce the total number of children they have so they do not have a negative trade-off that a high number of children might have. \"Together with their longer lifespan this may represent an evolutionary advantage. Moreover, by having children later in life might reduce the incidence of PCOS in their offspring.\" Professor Laven said studies indicated that over time, the gradual accumulation of DNA damage results in the exhaustion of cell renewal capacity and dysfunction in affected organs, ultimately accelerating cell death, commonly referred to as ageing. \"A similar erosion of the genome occurs within the ovaries,\" he said. \"The extent of DNA maintenance and repair also seems to have a determining effect on susceptibility to conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease.\" Professor Laven said sub-fertility should be monitored as it serves as a sensitive marker for susceptibility to these conditions highlighting the importance of patient follow up among those presenting for assisted reproduction. \"This seems to be in contrast to what most assisted reproductive technology clinics do,\" he added. \"In general, clinics only report live birth rates as success. \"So, in many cases we are not following up our patients who may be susceptible to non-communicable diseases when we have the opportunity to develop preventive health strategies for them.\" The ASPIRE Congress at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre in Singapore has brought together over 2,000 scientists, clinicians, nurses and counsellors for a program that will help shape the future of fertility health care in the region and around the world. • "content": "The Japanese government has donated an estimated $10million worth of medical equipment, hospital beds and ambulances to support Fiji’s healthcare delivery. The handover by Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii was made to the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, and ministry staff at the Fiji Pharmaceutical Biomedical Services Centre in Suva on Wednesday. In total, a CT scanner installed at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, eight infant incubators, 50 hospital beds, nine mobile x-ray units, six ambulances, seven ultrasound scanners, 20 defibrillators, 13 autoclave machines, 60 suction units, five centrifuge machines, 40 x-ray protection aprons, four ultra-low-temperature freezers, along with 35 stretchers and 41 wheelchairs, which are set to arrive later, were gifted. Some medical equipment have already been deployed at various healthcare facilities where they are most needed. Dr Lalabalavu said the donation of medical equipment could not have come at a better time. “It will greatly assist healthcare workers around the country in their work and make a difference for patients in our care,” he said. The donation was delivered through Japan’s grant aid scheme, the Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP), as part of its COVID-19 support package to the Fiji Government. Since 2016, eight ESDP projects worth $60.72m have been discharged. “Japan shares the same recognition of the importance of the health care sector to the overall socio-economic development in Fiji, and this is one of the reasons we have consistently focused on Fiji’s healthcare sector,” Mr Michii said. “We share a long-standing friendship and collaboration in the health care sector, and we are honored to continue that legacy through this project.” Feedback: jernese.macanawai@fijisun.com.fj",

      • "content": "Fiji’s yachting gateway Port Denarau Marina has commenced two major $6million capital projects to expand its superyacht infrastructure. The expansion of its superyacht infrastructure is in response to the increasing demand from the global yachting community. The investment includes a 203 meter extension of the superyacht jetty and comprehensive dredging works to improve navigational access. The jetty extension will introduce seven new superyacht berths, accommodating up to four 75m vessels and three 40m vessels. The extension project is designed with enhanced utilities and support services, and anticipated to improve berth availability and vessel turnover, in particular during peak cruising periods.According to Port Denarau Marina, that will increase private berthing capacity to 62 berths – 27 superyachts berths for vessels more than 24m and 35 yacht berths for vessels from 16m, with the largest berth to accommodate vessels of up to 115m.At the same time, dredging operations are also underway to deepen approach channels, turning basins to ensure efficient and safe access for superyachts, commercial vessels and other marine traffic.Port Denarau Marina CEO Cynthia Rasch said these projects formed a key part of the marina’s long term strategic vision to reinforce its position as the premier superyacht destination in the South Pacific region. She said the development was guided by findings from the 2019 Fiji Yachting Survey – conducted in collaboration with industry stakeholders and the Market Development Facility (MDF), which highlighted the growing appeal of Fiji as a superyacht hub.Ms Rasch said 83 per cent of visiting superyachts had identified Port Denarau Marina as the preferred port of entry, citing access to services and provisioning. She said more than 70 per cent of captains and crew had expressed a need for dedicated berthing and improved seasonal access. She added the average length of stay for superyachts in Fiji had risen to more than 60 days, with many vessels using Port Denarau as a strategic base for regional cruising.“We’re excited to begin work on this significant upgrade,” Ms Rasch said in the company’s market announcement to the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX) where it is listed.“The data affirms what we’ve consistently observed – Fiji is rapidly emerging as a key hub for superyachts in the South Pacific.“This $6m investment delivers the critical infrastructure needed to support that growth and future-proof our operations.“Our customers deserve the very best, and this development underscores our ongoing commitment to enhancing their experience.”Ms Rasch said those capital works not only responded to market demand but also reinforced their vision to position Fiji as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.Company board chairman Malakai Naiyaga said the extension of the superyacht berths and the launch of dredging works represented a major milestone for PDM and Fiji’s marine tourism sector.“This is the beginning of a broader investment program to elevate our facilities to world-class standards and cement Fiji’s status as the superyacht capital of the South Pacific,” Mr Naiyaga said in the market announcement to SPX.According to the company, the projects are scheduled to be completed just in time for the start of the 2025 cruising season, and in alignment with Port Denarau Marina’s strategic priorities of sustainability, innovation, and service excellence.Award-winning Port Denarau Marina is Fiji’s largest marina facility, and offers premium services for superyachts, cruising yachts and commercial vessels. It is certified as a clean and fish friendly marina, and prides itself in continuing to lead the way in responsible marine tourism, supporting local economic development and global yachting excellence.Last month, the company released its half-year results for the period ending January 31, 2025 where it maintained a solid financial performance in that period with a net profit before tax of $2,167,007.Though that reflected a 9 per cent decrease compared to $2.39m recorded for the same period last year, the company stated it represented a 9.4 per cent above budget performance. The company stated it had projected a lower profit than in 2024 because of planned repairs and maintenance on its water infrastructure.Total operating revenue for the period amounted to $4,860,485, a 2 per cent decline from the previous year; primarily attributed to a drop in berthing revenue, largely driven by a 50 per cent decline in superyacht berthing compared to the same period last year.Port Denarau Marina continues to invest in infrastructure to support long-term growth, the latest in its expansion strategy.Despite short-term fluctuations, the company said its outlook for the 2025 yachting season remained positive, and that the management team continued to focus on operational efficiency, strategic investments, and market expansion to ensure sustainable long-term growth.Port Denarau Marina chief executive officerCynthia Rasch poses for a photo at the PortDenarau Marina in Nadi. • "content": "Palmerston Island in Cook Islands is currently facing a critical power shortage due to the failure of its ageing diesel generator. The generator has long needed repairs beyond the capabilities of local administration staff. The generator is no longer operational, leaving the community entirely dependent on solar power-an insufficient solution for the island’s energy needs. In response, residents are required to adopt strict power-saving measures to maintain a minimal electricity supply. The isolated island has been running on intermittent solar power since 19 April due to the generator not putting out the correct voltage (240 volts). Palmerston’s Executive Officer (EO), Stella Neale says the solar energy system is shut down from 7pm – 7am to ensure that there is enough capacity in the battery banks to provide power supply to the island. Homeowners have been asked to turn off all their freezers before 7am to minimise overloading the system when the power supply is switched back on. A diesel generator is required to support the charge of solar batteries if there has not been enough sunlight hours or demand is greater than usual. “We are at a point where we are unable to keep the generator running at all because of faulty parts,” said Neale, “we have been waiting since last year in July/August.2 Because of the isolation of the island – the only access is by sea; the huge issue is transportation. Due to irregular shipping schedules and limited berth availability, the parts for the generator and a mechanic have not been able to reach Palmerston. With limited berth, space available on the next scheduled shipping vessel MV Taunga Nui – the only vessel that ships from Rarotonga to Palmerston, the arrival of both the necessary technician and equipment remains uncertain. Neale is hoping for a last-minute solution that would allow the mechanic to travel to Palmerston and restore the island’s power infrastructure. She said the generator supplements the solar energy when necessary. Monday, Neale said so far they have had no problems with the intermittent power supply. However, she is hopeful that this is only a short-term solution. “In the meantime, we carry on resolutely with prayers for sunny days and the goodwill of those angels who can make miracles happen,” she said. Te Koutu Mana Tutara O Te Ipukarea Pa Enua Governance Officer at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Mata Takioa says, the heavy machinery parts for the generator are at Avatiu wharf. Most of the spare parts have been sourced from the mechanic’s workshop, additional or specialised parts are procured from overseas suppliers as needed. Takioa says these parts will be shipped on the next available vessel, MV Taunga Nui, on its scheduled voyage to Palmerston next month on 21 Ma. According to Takioa, at this stage, the passenger capacity on MV Taunga Nui has been fully allocated for its May voyage. “As a result, the Pa Enua Mechanical Overseer (mechanic) does not have a confirmed booking on this trip, however, we will continue to hold in case a berth opens up,” she said, also confirming that the parts required for the generator will be shipped on this voyage. Installing the parts will require the support of the Island Administration staff with the mechanic providing remote assistance as needed, she added. “OPM is actively exploring alternative options to deploy the mechanic to Palmerston as soon as practical while ensuring all relevant regulations are followed. In the meantime, we remain committed to supporting the people of Palmerston in every way possible,” Takioa said. Palmerston Island first received solar power on 15 February 2015, as part of the “Uira Natura O te Pae Tokerau” project. The new solar energy system officially became operational on 21 February 2015. To maintain battery charge and ensure the system functions properly, daily use of a diesel generator is still required. The continuous power supply is essential, as the island’s fishermen rely on freezers to store their catches before shipping them to Rarotonga. The last ship left Palmerston on 3 March 2025.",

      • "content": "Fiji’s major marina facility Port Denarau Marina (PDM) is investing $6million in two major capital projects that aims to expand its superyacht infrastructure at the marina in Nadi.Ports Denarau Marina CEO Cynthia Rasch said the investment projects formed a key part of the marina’s long-term strategy to reinforce its position as the premier superyacht destination in the South Pacific. The expansion includes a 203-meter extension of the superyacht jetty and dredging works to improve navigation access. The jetty extension will see to the introduction of seven new superyacht berths and will accommodate up to four vessels of 75m and three vessels of 40m.Ms Rasch said that extension would increase private berthing capacity to 62 berths. She said Fiji was rapidly emerging as a key hub for superyachts in the South Pacific region and they were excited to begin work on this significant upgrade.“This $6m investment delivers the critical infrastructure needed to support that growth and future-proof our operations,” Ms Rasch said in the company’s market announcement to the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX) where the company is listed.“Our customers deserve the very best, and this development underscores our ongoing commitment to enhancing their experience,” she added.PDM board chairman Malakai Naiyaga said the extension of the superyacht berths and the launch of dredging works represented a major milestone for Port Denarau Marina and the country’s marine tourism sector.“This is the beginning of a broader investment program to elevate our facilities to world-class standards and cement Fiji’s status as the superyacht capital of the South Pacific,” Mr Naiyaga said. The projects are scheduled for completion just in time for the start of the 2025 cruising season.A 2019 Fiji Yachting Survey conducted in collaboration with industry stakeholders and the Market Development Facility (MDF) found 83 per cent of visiting superyachts identified PDM as their preferred port of entry. The post $6m to expand superyacht berths appeared first on The Fiji Times.",

      • "description": "VUDATCM Explores Synergy Between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Modern Rehabilitation for Stroke Patients",
      • "content": "Stroke is becoming a major public health concern in Fiji, especially in remote island communities where access to rehabilitation is limited and long-term care costs are prohibitive. In response, VUDA Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, led by sixth-generation TCM practitioner Dr. Pai, has launched a “Stroke Recovery Initiative” featuring early intervention with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and moxibustion — bringing hope and healing to stroke survivors across the islands. Through early application of traditional Chinese therapies, many patients have experienced significant improvement in mobility, speech, and daily function. One notable case is 64-year-old Ishwar Chand, who suffered left-sided paralysis after a stroke. Within one month of consistent TCM treatment, he regained the ability to speak and stand, returning to daily life. His recovery video garnered over 165,000 views and likes on social media, inspiring trust in the power of acupuncture. “Stroke recovery is a race against time, especially in tropical climates where muscle atrophy sets in faster,” says Dr. Pai. “Many people believe they must wait until their condition stabilizes before beginning rehab, but traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes early intervention to unblock meridians and preserve vital functions.” To raise public awareness, VUDATCM promotes the “FAST+” stroke response guide: • F – Face drooping • A – Arm weakness • S – Speech difficulty • T – Time to seek help • + – Ask for TCM assessment “When the fragrance of Fijian herbs meets the warmth of Chinese moxa, healing bridges cultures,” Dr. Pai reflects. VUDATCM is committed to serving the local community with integrative care, aiming to restore health and hope to every family touched by stroke. A total 6,181 (71 per cent) scholarships were issued to iTaukei students while Fijians of Indian descent students received 2,278 scholarships, or 26 per cent. The remaining ethnic groups – Rotumans, 74 scholarships or 0.85 percent; Chinese, two scholarships or 0.2 percent; and others, 165 scholarships or 1.9 percent. This was highlighted by the Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro, while speaking in Parliament this week. Radrodro attributed the increase this year the highest number of new scholarships taken in, is in TVET, which shows Government policies are aligned to employment and workforce demands. He said by gender distribution, 55 per cent were females and 45 per cent were males and this indicates a positive shift towards gender empowerment in scholarship distribution. He added that of the new awards, there are over 10,244 continuing students on the Fiji Government Scholarship. Therefore, if new and existing sponsored students are added together, a total of 18,944 scholarships were given out. He stressed that the cadet program plays a crucial role in addressing these problems. The event was a significant milestone for both the school and the province, symbolising a growing commitment to youth development and leadership as the community witnessed the school’s first-ever cadet passing-out parade.",

      • "content": "Sinariko Maezama and her daughter, Alihi Tore. In a heartwarming story of hope and healing, Sinariko Maezama from the Solomon Islands brought her daughter, Alihi Tore, to Fiji in search of life-saving medical care. What began as a journey filled with uncertainty became a story of renewal, thanks to the Sai Prema Foundation’s Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva. As a parent, she had so many questions, fears, and doubts. But when they arrived in Fiji, they were greeted with warmth and compassion from the hospital staff, making them feel at home during what was their first time in the country. Alihi’s care came during a major milestone for the Pacific region, the hospital’s 20th visiting surgical mission. Led by world-renowned pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Shaun Setty from Stanford University, a 17-member international team performed 15 free heart surgeries for children from Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Kiribati. Sinariko echoed the same sentiment, reflecting on the stark reality faced by many children in the Solomon Islands who lack access to the kind of care Alihi was able to receive. This mission also marked the hospital’s third anniversary. Since opening in 2022, it has completed 378 free surgeries, 30,000+ echocardiograms, and over 40,000 medical consultations—all at no cost to families. Dr. Setty, who performed the hospital’s first surgery and returns annually, praised the facility, noting that it is an honour to serve the children of the Pacific and that the hospital truly rivals the best in the world. Supported by the Fijian Ministry of Health, the hospital continues to reach remote communities, ensuring no child is left behind due to geography or cost. As Sinariko and Alihi return home, their story stands as a testament to what’s possible when compassion and world-class healthcare come together in service to humanity.",
