      • "content": "JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said Saturday (May 17) it had launched \"extensive strikes\" as part of a fresh offensive in Gaza, after rescuers reported 100 people killed in the besieged Palestinian territory. The army said on Telegram it had begun the \"initial stages\" of the offensive, known as Operation Gideon's Chariots. The operation was part of \"the expansion of the battle in the Gaza Strip, with the goal of achieving all the war's objectives, including the release of the abducted and the defeat of Hamas\", it said in a post in Arabic. A separate statement in English said the army was \"mobilising troops to achieve operational control in areas of the Gaza Strip\". Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes on Gaza had killed 100 people on Friday, while the army said its forces had \"struck over 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip\" in 24 hours. Israel resumed its military offensive in Gaza on Mar 18 after a two-month truce in its war against Hamas, which was triggered by an attack by the Palestinian group in October 2023. The latest operation comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces increasing pressure to lift a sweeping aid blockade on Gaza, as NGOs warn of critical shortages of food, clean water, fuel and medicines. The return to fighting since Mar 18 has drawn international condemnation, with the UN's rights chief on Friday denouncing the renewed attacks - and what he described as an apparent push to permanently displace the population. \"ETHNIC CLEANSING\" \"This latest barrage of bombs ... and the denial of humanitarian assistance underline that there appears to be a push for a permanent demographic shift in Gaza that is in defiance of international law and is tantamount to ethnic cleansing,\" Volker Turk said in a statement. The main Israeli campaign group representing the families of hostages said that by extending the fighting, Netanyahu was missing a \"historic opportunity\" to get their loved ones out through diplomacy. Hamas on Friday demanded the United States press Israel to lift the aid blockade in return for a US-Israeli hostage released by the group. Edan Alexander, the last living hostage with US nationality, was freed last week after direct engagement with the Trump administration that left Israel sidelined. As part of the understanding with Washington regarding Alexander's release, senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu said the group was \"awaiting and expecting the US administration to exert further pressure\" on Israel \"to open the crossings and allow the immediate entry of humanitarian aid\". Israel says its decision to cut off aid to Gaza was intended to force concessions from Hamas, which still holds dozens of Israeli hostages seized during the Oct 7, 2023 attack that sparked the war. \"PEOPLE ARE STARVING\" US President Donald Trump acknowledged on Friday that \"a lot of people are starving\" in the besieged Palestinian territory. \"We're looking at Gaza. And we're going to get that taken care of,\" Trump told reporters in Abu Dhabi, on a regional tour that excluded key ally Israel. The Arab League is to meet in Baghdad on Saturday to discuss regional crises, with Gaza expected to be high on the agenda. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres will attend the summit, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez - who has sharply criticised Israel's offensive in Gaza - is expected to address it as a guest. The Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 57 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead. The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said 2,985 people have been killed since Israel resumed strikes on March 18, taking the war's overall toll to 53,119.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Singapore has been ranked the world's 3rd \"happiest\" city for 2025, behind Copenhagen and Zurich. Two other cities in Asia made the top 10 - with Seoul in 6th place and Taipei in 8th. That's according to the Institute for the Quality of Life's latest Happy City Index, which tracked 82 indicators across six major themes that \"directly influence\" the happiness of residents. The six categories are citizens, governance, environment, economy, health and mobility. Scoring a total of 979 points, Singapore stands out as \"a global beacon of economic prosperity, governance and urban innovation\", according to the index. 1. Copenhagen 2. Zurich 3. Singapore 4. Aarhus 5. Antwerp 6. Seoul 7. Stockholm 8. Taipei 9 Munich 10. Rotterdam Education and innovation are \"at the heart of Singapore’s success\", with the country's universities ranking top 50 globally, the index noted. Singapore \"maintains its global connectivity\", with more than 63 per cent of the population speaking at least one foreign language and 55 per cent possessing digital skills. The index also said that the country fosters technological progress and ensures a steady pipeline of innovation - granting 7.37 patents per 10,000 residents. Governance and transparency define Singapore’s administrative excellence, the index said, adding that there were \"high levels of civic engagement\". It also noted that Singapore operates a comprehensive open data platform, making 8,086 datasets available for public access. Digital governance is also seamlessly integrated into daily life, it said, citing e-services for fault reporting, online payments, as well as appointment scheduling. On the theme of health, which is new for this edition of the Happy City Index, the indicators included mental health, nutrition and work-life balance. With universal medical insurance and 2.8 doctors per 1,000 residents, healthcare in Singapore \"is both accessible and efficient\", said the index. It also said the country has a strong emphasis on public health initiatives, citing a life expectancy of 83 years and low obesity rate. \"Mental health services are expanding, with 15 per cent of the adult population receiving coordinated care,\" it added. The index also noted a \"minimal crime rate\" of 3.31 recorded incidents of public violence per 1,000 residents. On Singapore’s mobility and transport infrastructure, the index said that it is \"among the most advanced globally\", adding that the city \"prioritises sustainable transit options\". \"An intelligent traffic management system ensures smooth urban movement, while commuters benefit from fully integrated electronic payment systems,\" it said. The index also noted that all public transport vehicles in Singapore are fully adapted for people with mobility disabilities. \"Traffic-related fatalities remain low at 0.24 per 10,000 residents, thanks to stringent safety measures and efficient urban planning,\" it said. Lastly, it noted that sustainability is \"at the core of Singapore’s urban policies\" and that the city is a pioneer in biodiversity protection and renewable energy adoption. \"With 100 per cent of the population served by sewage treatment facilities, Singapore upholds high environmental standards.\" It added that while waste management remains a challenge in the country, recycling efforts have continued to improve. This is the 6th edition of the Happy City Index, run by London-based think tank Institute for the Quality of Life. Emphasising that \"no single city can be labelled as the absolute best at ensuring the happiness of its citizens over the long haul\", the index identified a group of what it termed Gold Cities - \"the happiest locations in the world\". There are 31 Gold Cities this year. In last year's edition, Singapore also made the list of Gold Cities, placing 34th out of 37 cities.",

      • "content": "This year's Cannes Film Festival has barely started, but it's already been an attention-grabbing affair, from new rules for its red carpets, nerves about potential US tariffs and the return of Tom Cruise. And that says nothing about the films, expected to be a strong slate as Cannes is seen as increasingly important to the Oscars' best picture hopefuls. Even in a normal year, Cannes is a lot to keep up with. Here's a handy guide of what's happened so far, what to expect and what it may mean. WHAT'S HAPPENED SO FAR AT CANNES Cannes opened Tuesday with a starry tribute to Robert De Niro, 49 years after Taxi Driver won the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or. De Niro used the platform to assail US President Donald Trump, a frequent target of his criticism. He also basked in the adoration of some of film's elite, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Quentin Tarantino. Cannes debuted a complex 4K restoration of The Gold Rush, one of Charlie Chaplin’s most beloved silent masterpieces, timed to the film's 100th anniversary. “Our grandfather would be really proud to see this, a hundred years later, to see all of you here and interested in seeing the film,” said Kiera Chaplin to a packed screening Tuesday. Tom Cruise took the spotlight on Day 2 with the latest Mission: Impossible installment, Final Reckoning. For such a high-flying franchise, Cruise kept his feet on the ground (so far) ahead of the film's premiere. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2025 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL AP Film Writer Jake Coyle broke down some of the key things about the festival in a thorough primer. Among the things to watch out for: Any effects of Trump's talk about tariffs on foreign-made films at the world's largest film market. The festival serves as the start of Oscar season and there's a packed field vying for this year's Palme d'Or. Outside of competition, there's some starry first-time directors: Scarlett Johansson with Eleanor the Great, Kristen Stewart with The Chronology of Water and Harris Dickinson with Urchin. Their films are not in the main competition, but as Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho told Coyle about debuting a film at Cannes: “You release a film into that Colosseum-like situation.” He noted premiering a movie at the festival is akin to “a potential invitation to a beheading”. NEW RED CARPET RULES, AND HOW STARS ARE RESPONDING One of the buzziest moves by Cannes this year so far has been its proclamation that nudity is banned by festival-goers and so too are “voluminous” outfits, in particular those with a large train. The move to ban nude looks comes amid the “naked dress” trend on red carpets, including Bianca Censori's Grammys look and many of the outfits worn by Vanity Fair party attendees after the Oscars. Cannes press officers said earlier this week the festival “made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect”. So how did stars at Cannes respond? Halle Berry, who is on the festival jury headed by Juliette Binoche, told reporters she would abide by it and had changed her opening night look. While risque looks were in short supply Monday, there were certainly some “voluminous outfits”, including dresses worn by Heidi Klum, Chinese actor Wan QianHui and others.",

      • "description": "Here’s what experts say about snooze buttons, sunlight and sleeping in.",
      • "content": "You've heard plenty of advice about how to prepare for a good night’s sleep, but what about waking up? Is there really an ideal way to start your day? Your schedule often determines exactly when you get out of bed. But to the extent you can shape your routine, experts have some thoughts on the healthiest morning habits. “I always joke that the best thing to do is to get a puppy,” said Mariana Figueiro, who studies light and health at the Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She’s only half kidding. The two keys to a healthy wake-up routine, she said, are getting up at a consistent time each day and viewing morning sunlight – both tend to come with a regular morning dog walk. We spoke with four other sleep and circadian rhythm experts who all agreed with Dr Figueiro about the importance of these two morning habits. Here are their other recommendations – dog or no dog. STAY CONSISTENT Assuming you had the flexibility to choose, is there an ideal time to wake up? Not exactly. As long as you sleep for seven to nine hours each night, there’s no “best” time to wake up, said Dr Daniel Barone, the associate medical director of the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine. More important is that you stick to the same time, said Dr Katherine Sharkey, an associate professor who studies sleep at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Your body runs on circadian rhythms that regulate not only your sleep-wake cycle but also your metabolism, appetite, hormones, mood, body temperature and cognitive function. Waking up at a consistent time can help keep these body functions running smoothly, said Helen Burgess, the co-director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Waking up much later or earlier than you’re used to can make you feel drowsy or uncoordinated. Longer term, researchers have found links between irregular sleep patterns and increased risks of obesity, diabetes, mood disorders, heart disease and cancer. DON’T LET WEEKENDS THROW YOU OFF If you feel tired enough to sleep in on weekends, Dr Figueiro said, you’re probably not getting enough rest during the week. In these cases, Dr Sharkey suggested sticking to your typical wake-up time and taking a nap later that day. This can help keep your circadian rhythms in sync. If you feel you absolutely must sleep in, Dr Barone said you can likely get away with an extra hour. Any longer and you might experience drowsiness, digestive issues and trouble focusing, similar to jet lag. (Sleep experts use the term “ social jet lag ” to refer to the effects of staying up late and sleeping in on weekends.) SEEK OUT SUNLIGHT As soon as you wake up, open the blinds and switch on the lights. Then, as soon as you can – ideally within an hour, Dr Figuiero said – try to get outside. Viewing any light in the morning, especially sunlight, helps signal to your body that it’s daytime, Dr Sharkey said. When the light hits your eyes, it triggers a pathway between your brain and your adrenal glands that tells your body to release cortisol. This hormone makes you feel alert, which in turn could boost your mood, she added. S ome limited s tudies suggest that viewing morning sunlight can improve your sleep the following night, too. When the sun hits your eyes, Dr Sharkey said, it triggers a metaphorical stopwatch , which begins the countdown to bedtime, later telling your body when to release the sleep hormone melatonin. Even on overcast days, morning sunlight is strong enough to regulate your body clock, Dr Barone said. But if you wake up when it’s still dark, he said it can be useful to turn on a powerful artificial light such as a light box . You might also try waking up to a sunrise alarm clock , he said, which gradually becomes brighter to mimic the rising sun. There’s no specific amount of time you must spend in the morning sunlight, experts said, but, more exposure is better (as long as you protect your skin ). Dr Burgess said an hour is best, but even 15 minutes is better than nothing. SKIP THE SNOOZE BUTTON Snoozing your alarm may feel like a gift to yourself, but it isn’t the best way to start your day, said Ann E Rogers, a sleep researcher and professor of nursing at Emory University. The urge to snooze is your body’s way of saying you need more sleep, Dr Sharkey said. And if you have the flexibility in your schedule to hit snooze, the experts agreed you’re better off setting your alarm for the later end of your snooze window and getting up then. That way, your body can get the extra rest it craves – uninterrupted. By Caroline Hopkins Legaspi © The New York Times Company The article originally appeared in The New York Times .",

      • "description": "Forget the generic Chinese buffets at Yokohama’s Chinatown. Make your calories count with these.",
      • "content": "Just a 30-minute train ride away from downtown Tokyo, Yokohama is the less frenzied, breezier sibling – figuratively and literally since it is by the sea. The first port city to open up to foreign trade in 1859, it pioneered a unique food culture that marries foreign influences with Japanese tastes. There’s yoshoku, their unique Japanese take on western food now popular around the world. Think Ma Maison, Mos Burger and Saizeriya. But perhaps the most iconic is chuka (meaning “Chinese food”), which originated in Yokohama’s Chukagai (Chinatown), the biggest in Japan. It is Yokohama’s most popular attraction with its distinctive Chinese gates and Kanteibyo, a temple dedicated to the warrior deity Guan Yu. The streets are filled with restaurants offering all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets, steamed buns, Hong Kong dim sum, Taiwanese giant chicken cutlets, and souvenir stores selling kitschy goods. But many of these are mediocre tourist traps, and you can find comparable or better chuka elsewhere, such as at Ikebukuro in Tokyo. Most visitors will probably dine at Instagram or TikTok famous spots in Chinatown or even the historic Red Brick Warehouse, which has been converted into a chic dining and shopping enclave. But why squeeze with the madding crowd? Try these three foodie experiences instead. 1. VISIT A RAMEN FACTORY AND COOK A 4-COURSE MEAL My 17-year-old teenager and I booked the “ Yokohama Ramen Adventure From a Local Noodle Factory To Home” on Agoda . The five-hour tour was the ultimate cultural immersion experience, especially for ramen lovers. Our host Akiko met us at Kikuna Station, just 10 minutes away from Yokohama station or 45 minutes away from Tokyo station. A short bus ride took us to her family’s small noodle factory, which was started by her grandfather and is currently run by her brother, Taka. The jovial Taka schooled us on the difference between ramen, udon and soba, which are made with different ingredients. Their factory specialises in ramen and we checked out different types of dough, cutters and machines, some of which were from his grandfather’s time. We customised our ramen by choosing our preferred dough (we took the chewiest option), width and straight or wavy noodles. Then the fun began. As our customised ramen shot out of the machine in small bunches, we had to weigh and roll each into precisely 20-gram balls, and place them neatly in a tray. Armed with our customised noodles, we headed off to Akiko’s elegant apartment nearby. We made Mizuna and Tofu Salad with Fried Jako (a small fish like our ikan bilis) and marinated and wrapped our own gyoza. They were so good, my son and I polished off at least 20 between us. Akiko shared practical tips on making ramen broth without brewing it for hours, with readily available ingredients. (She will take you to a supermarket after the cooking lesson to shop for them.) We successfully replicated the rich and creamy tonkotsu-style broth and made marinated eggs. We assembled our ramen with Japanese fish cake, veggies and cha shu that she’d made ahead, which we torched for a smoky finish. The meal ended with a dessert of Matcha Shiratama Cream Anmitsu with freshly made glutinous rice balls, and a glass of Umeshu for me and a non-alcoholic beverage for my son. Akiko will also give you printed and pdf copies of all her recipes and send you photos that document your adventure. Tip: Taka’s ramen is usually sold to commercial customers but tour participants can buy them from just JPY70 (S$0.63) per ball. We kept them chilled in freezer bags (easy to get from Daiso) in our hotel fridge and packed them in our check-in luggage. The ramen keeps fresh for 10 days so time your tour at the tail-end of your trip if you want to buy some. The usual price is S$166/person on Viator but we found deals on Agoda (currently S$119/person) or AirBnB (S$113/person). Pescatarian, vegan and vegetarian menus are available upon request. Maximum of five people per session. 2. EAT OG YOSHOKU AT HOTEL NEW GRAND When Japan finally ended its 250 years of isolation from the world, Yokohama was the first port city to open. Naturally, it was the first to offer yoshoku, or Japanese-style western food. In the 1930s, Hotel New Grand’s Swiss Grand Chef Saly Weil concocted his famous spaghetti Napolitan, seafood doria and custard pudding a la mode for his Western guests. These include luminaries such as actor Charlie Chaplin, baseball legend Babe Ruth and American general Douglas MacArthur. In fact, when General MacArthur arrived in Yokohama on Aug 30, 1945, as the Supreme Commander of the post-war occupation of Japan, the hotel was his first stop. Taste the OG yoshoku that these historical figures supped on at The Cafe. During our visit in March, we enjoyed their Kid’s Lunch For Adults promotion and tried all three signature dishes, a soup and a beverage at JPY 5,500. You can top up extra for their popular cream soda and a full-sized custard pudding a la mode. Bonus: Hotel New Grand is just opposite Yamashita Park, Japan’s first seaside park which opened in 1930. Look out for the Guardian of Water statue of a woman in the middle of a water fountain, a gift from San Diego, the sister city of Yokohama. You can also visit the Hikawa Maru museum ship that is permanently docked there. For more info about Hotel New Grand, click here . 3. SLURP UP 8 BRANDS AT THIS RAMEN MUSEUM Founded in 1994, Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is the world's first ramen-themed amusement park and a testimony to how seriously the Japanese take their national dish. It is a five-minute walk from Shin-Yokohama station, and 45 minutes away from Tokyo station. Learn about the history of ramen, including the answer to this burning question: Is ramen Chinese or Japanese? Make sure you come hungry because there are eight ramen shops, all showcased in a streetscape replication from 1958, the year instant ramen was invented. All stores offer small and regular portions and every customer must order at least one small bowl. Prices vary; expect to pay a very reasonable JPY600 upwards for a decent portion. At Ryu Shanghai Honten, their thick ramen came with a scoop of red spicy miso in the centre, like the rising sun on the Japanese flag. We savoured the changing flavour as it slowly melted into the soup. At Hakata Bunpuku, a Fukuoka brand which has since expanded to Yokohama, New York, London and Sydney, the restaurant owner is a miso sommelier and his secret recipe blends five types of raw miso into his stock made with bonito, chicken, pork and kelp. The noodles are made using premium Minaminokaori flour and come thick and flat, or thin and wavy, and is a hearty bowl of goodness. You can also enjoy old school games, buy Japanese snacks and toys, and attend a short Ramen Making Experience class. (Extra charge and reservation required.) Don’t miss the Rahaku Sugomen Lab. Customise your instant ramen for JPY600, including the complimentary option to use your own photo for the lid. Pick your noodles, broth packet (eight flavours, including milk miso and dried sardines shoyu), and three out of the 17 ingredients. We chose naruto (Japanese fish cake) and Chinese dumpling (like dried wanton) and a piece of dried cha shu, and topped up 100 yen for a freaky-cute Tako-san sausage. Can’t decide between visiting Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum and the CupNoodles Museum? Families with kids may find the latter more interactive and entertaining. There, you can also customise a cup noodle for JPY 500 but you can only draw on the cup, while the Ramen Museum lets you customise the lid with a photo. The ramen restaurants here offer much, much better food. The CupNoodles Musum’s International Noodles Bazaar, designed like an Asian market, sells noodles from Italian pasta to Korean cold ramen and Vietnamese pho at a standard JPY 500 each but expect small portions and food court standard. As hardcore ramen lovers, my son and I preferred Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum. Entrance costs JPY 450 for adults; JPY 100 for children from six to 18 and seniors above 65. Free for kids under six. • "content": "LONDON :Chelsea will have defender Marc Cucurella to thank if they hit their target of qualifying for next season's Champions League. The tenacious, bushy-haired Spaniard once again popped up to score a vital goal as the Londoners beat Manchester United 1-0 on Friday, leaving them on the cusp of returning to Europe's elite competition. Cucurella powered a header past Andre Onana in the 71st minute, latching on to a perfect cross by Reece James as the two Chelsea wing backs combined to pierce United's defence. The goal settled the nerves of the home players and supporters who had been staring at the prospect of Chelsea dropping out of the Premier League's top five Champions League qualifying spots with only one more game to play this season. Cucurella, 26, similarly snatched the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Leicester City in March, put the Blues on course to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in January and opened the scoring in a 2-1 win over Brentford in December. He was also among the scorers in goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Southampton in February. By the end of Friday's game against United, the Stamford Bridge crowd were serenading him with chants of \"Cu-cu-rella\" along to the tune of Mexican folk song \"La Bamba\". Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca praised his left back for his sense of timing as well as the footballing philosophy that he learned while coming through the academy at Barcelona. \"The reason why Cucu is doing is so good with us is also because we know him, what he can do. The way we like to play is exactly the way that is good for him,\" Maresca told reporters. \"It's not important how big you are, or small. It's important to understand where you have to be, the position, the moment.\" It wasn't always this way. Signed in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion for 62 million pounds - one of the first of the many expensive acquisitions funded by Chelsea's U.S. owners - Cucurella struggled in his first season. He then missed chunks of his second campaign at Stamford Bridge with injuries, leaving many Chelsea fans wondering why the club had spent so much money on him. But a good run of form towards the end of last season earned him a place in Spain's squad for the Euro 2024 where he was a key part of La Roja's victorious campaign. He provided the cross that Mikel Oyarzabal converted for the winning goal in Spain's 2-1 win over England in the tournament final. On Friday, Cucurella said he was focused on helping Chelsea get back into the Champions League which the club won in 2021, a year before his arrival in London, and the UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis on May 28. \"The most important thing is it depends on us so we have to play the game on Sunday (against Nottingham Forest) and then we are thinking about the final,\" he told the BBC. \"Today is a moment to enjoy because we work all season for these moments so now we have ambitions to achieve these things.\" (Writing by William Schomberg, editing by Pritha Sarkar)",

      • "content": "It’s not the easy questions that shape a nation. It’s not comfort that builds greatness. If history has taught us anything, it’s this: Real progress is born from discomfort. Too often, societies fall into the trap of playing it safe – protecting old beliefs, avoiding friction, and choosing the path of least resistance. But no great story, no lasting success, has ever come from staying comfortable. Nations, like individuals, are destroyed not by what they face but by what they refuse to face. Across history, the fate of countries has not hinged solely on wars, leaders, or wealth, but on their willingness to ask the uncomfortable questions. The ones that hurt. The ones that unearth contradictions, threaten pride and force a reckoning with the past. Refusing to confront uncomfortable truths can be more damaging than any external threat. The Soviet Union collapsed not from outside pressure, but from its refusal to question its rigid ideology. The lesson is not that questioning guarantees success. It’s that the refusal to question guarantees failure. If America hadn’t asked why African Americans were treated as second-class citizens, it might still be trapped in deeper institutional racism. The civil rights movement was born from confrontation, not comfort. After WWII, Germany asked how it allowed the Holocaust to happen, choosing to confront its past. By remembering, not denying, it transformed from aggressor to the moral anchor of Europe. The biggest example is China. Deng Xiaoping asked the unthinkable – Is this version of communism truly serving our people? Then, instead of abandoning communism, he reimagined it – blending it with market reforms and global ambition. The result? The rise of a capitalist-communist state unlike anything the world had seen. The key was not ideology. It was introspection. Before Deng’s era, China was a rigid, feudal society dominated by a few elites and strict ideology. The Cultural Revolution under Mao deepened the crisis, causing widespread persecution and chaos. In the late 1970s, China faced a choice: stick to traditional Marxist doctrine or reinvent its society and economy. Deng Xiaoping took two bold steps – first through a social revolution that dismantled feudal structures, then through pragmatic economic modernization. He began by rehabilitating millions persecuted during the Cultural Revolution, restoring their dignity and fostering national reconciliation. In 1978, Deng Xiaoping launched the “ ” inviting foreign investment and integrating China into the global economy. This, along with his broader reforms, fueled rapid growth—China’s GDP grew by annually from 1978 to 2013, lifting 800 million out of poverty in four decades. Through the “ ,” Deng prioritized education, technology, national defense and agriculture, building a skilled workforce that powered China’s rise to become the world’s second-largest economy. China’s focus on innovation and talent over ideology drove rapid progress. Literacy rose from 20% (1949) to % (2020). It now produces a year, leads in STEM PhDs and has more than small and medium enterprises generating 60% of GDP and 80% of the employment. China’s rise is rooted in long-term investment in human capital, making it a global leader in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and space tech. Deng’s focus on practical solutions over ideology drove China’s rise from poverty to prosperity. By breaking feudal structures and embracing market reforms, China rebuilt its economy and fostered a nation of competent, forward-thinking citizens who empower the nation. India today stands at a crossroads, much like China in the 1970s. A land of vast potential, India is held back not by talent or vision but by its reluctance to question deep-rooted beliefs about caste. The caste system has long perpetuated inequality and limited opportunity. It’s India’s Achilles heel. However, a major shift is underway. In April 2025, after persistent advocacy by opposition and civil society, the Indian government to conduct a nationwide caste census as part of the decennial population survey. This step is vital for dismantling feudal structures and enabling data-driven, inclusive policymaking. I’ve long argued in my columns for a , as India’s strengths are overshadowed by the caste system’s deep-rooted flaws. The census is a step forward in addressing historical injustices and promoting equitable development, but the real challenge is turning the data into policies that drive social justice and inclusion. A caste census, followed by reforms, and then industrial reforms, will set India on the right trajectory, much like China. India must learn from China to invest in human capital and ensure equal opportunities for all, regardless of caste. For India to rise, it must first dismantle its traditional internal beliefs and ask uncomfortable questions to unleash its potential. The day we choose competence over complacency, equity over entitlement, and nation over narrowness, India’s rise won’t just be possible – it will be inevitable.",

      • "description": "Fatimah Mohsin started out as a freelance makeup artist and quickly became an icon in the Malay bridal scene. Building on her success, the multifaceted entrepreneur has expanded her brand into other ventures beyond weddings.",
      • "content": "Running a business is in Fatimah Mohsin’s blood. The Singaporean entrepreneur and bridal designer is the daughter of the legendary Encik Mohsin, who was affectionately known as ‘Raja Lelong’ (king of auctions). In the 1970s to the 1990s, Mohsin was a prominent figure in the Geylang Serai bazaar scene, known for his knack for offering great deals. As a child, Fatimah would accompany her father to work, enthusiastically shouting out ‘Lelong! Lelong!’ alongside him. She vividly remembers the pair returning home with a whole bucket of money. “So back then, when I was younger, if people asked me what my ambitions were, I said I wanted to be a businesswoman,” she recalled. An artist at heart, Fatimah always knew she wanted to work in the creative industry. “I loved cutting up my jeans, clothes, anything I didn’t like, and turning them into something new,” she shared. After secondary school, she turned down an engineering course at a local polytechnic in favour of studying fashion merchandising at LaSalle College of the Arts. An internship at Puma soon followed, which eventually turned into a full-time role that deepened her love for fashion. At the time, back in the 1990s, Puma was also the national outfitter for the Singapore football team. “I got to work closely with Fandi Ahmad and all the other footballers,” Fatimah recalled. But in 1998, in the midst of the Asian Financial Crisis, Fatimah was laid off after giving up her position for a colleague who needed to support a family. “Since I was still young and single, I knew I could find ways to support myself as a freelancer,” she reasoned. Unsure of her next move, Fatimah eventually turned to makeup. “At that age, my friends and I loved going out to parties and I was always the creative one with some ‘nonsense’ makeup I picked up from a magazine,” she laughed. She enrolled in a course at CosmoProf Academy, which ended up completely changing the trajectory of her career. AN ICON IN THE BRIDAL SCENE As a freelance makeup artist, Fatimah soon made a name for herself in the Malay bridal scene. She stood out by doing things differently – eschewing the traditionally heavy, dramatic looks in favour of a more modern, subtle style for her brides and clients. That also meant that she got “scolded a lot”, she recounted with a laugh. “Mothers of the brides would come into the room to ask why I used such light-coloured lipstick or eye makeup, but I stood my ground.” In a time before social media, Fatimah’s reputation grew purely through word of mouth and she soon became highly sought after, even among celebrities. “That was the start of the Fatimah M ohsin era. Everyone knew who I was, be it in the TV or bridal industry,” she said. Eventually, Fatimah expanded the business to offer a full range of wedding services, including planning, venue decor and couture bridal outfits exclusively designed by her. She describes her designs as “timeless and classic”. “After being in the industry for so long, you learn that fashion is cyclical,” she quipped. She named the business Fatimah Mohsin – The Wedding Gallery, at the encouragement of a friend, not expecting that her name would one day become iconic in the industry. In fact, she admitted with a chuckle, “I hated the name Fatimah. It is so old school, especially when you consider yourself to be a trendy fashionista.” It has been 25 years since Fatimah first stepped into the bridal world. The business has also expanded into Perth, a market Fatimah sees as a stepping stone to greater international reach. “We are known in the modest bridalwear scene in Singapore, but I feel that we don’t have to limit ourselves to our home market,” she said, noting a growing global demand for modest, quality bridalwear. “ One of my first few steps is to enter Perth’s modest market before trying to tap into other countries moving forward.” A post shared by Couture Atelier for Brides ✨ (@fatimahmohsintwg) FROM BRIDAL TO HOME DECOR AND F&B Beyond bridal and weddings, Fatimah has a wide range of passions – which she has turned into business ventures. “The wedding industry has its ups and downs,” she shared. “Like anyone working in the same field for over 10 years, it can start to feel a bit mundane. I didn’t want a complete career switch, so instead, I looked for other things that brought me joy.” As a designer, Fatimah often travelled to source materials for her work. During these trips, she would come across beautiful home decor pieces which she began collecting for her own home. After sharing them on social media, her followers started asking where she got them from, sparking inspiration for a new venture. In 2016, Fatimah started her home decor business, Prop Up Store. What was meant to be just a side hustle for the annual Ramadan Bazaar turned into a thriving brand with an online store. A post shared by Home, Living & Décor (@propupstore) The business ended up keeping Fatimah and her team afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the bridal industry faced major disruptions with weddings postponed or cancelled. Not one to stay still, she also opened a hair salon with her sister during this time, as hair services were considered essential and were permitted to operate. An opportunity to step into F&B later came up, and Fatimah opened her first restaurant, 555 Halal Thai, in 2020. “I’m a hustler and I felt that it was a good opportunity at that time,” Fatimah said. Situated within the Gallop Kranji Farm Resort, 555 Halal Thai exuded countryside vibes and was meant to offer Singaporeans a unique dining destination at a time when overseas travel was off the table. The restaurant closed in early 2023 due to “a crazy increase in rental”. Fatimah also started her own ready-to-wear line selling modest dresses, abayas and scarves. More recently, she embarked on her second F&B venture together with a few partners with the opening of halal Chinese restaurant Loong Dim Sum in Boat Quay. “In Singapore, you can count the number of halal dim sum restaurants on one hand – there are fewer than five – and people even travel to Malaysia [to get their fix]. So we thought, why not open one here? This is our first stepping stone toward offering quality halal Chinese cuisine. We have bigger plans,” teased Fatimah. The three-storey establishment also has an event space which can be used for hosting intimate weddings. Reflecting on her decision to diversify her businesses, Fatimah credits a key lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic: “You can’t put all your eggs in one basket. But if you group them together, it’s harder to break,” she quipped. NEXT STOP: MALAYSIA After more than two decades of building her businesses in Singapore, Fatimah recently announced a major move to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she hopes to expand both her wedding and home decor companies. The relocation has been a long time coming – she first toyed with it more than a decade ago, but felt it wasn’t the right time to uproot her two young daughters. While Fatimah currently travels between Singapore and KL, she hopes to spend more time in KL soon, having already built a strong team in Singapore. But growth in her home country has plateaued, she admitted. “The wedding industry in Singapore, to be honest, has become quite stagnant. It is no longer like how it was before, where customers were more creative and wanted to host their weddings at interesting places. We are limited in space in Singapore, with too many templated wedding venues,” Fatimah shared. As someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, she finds energy in change. “I always love exploring new ideas. It gives me a push when something new is happening.” Just as how she has made Fatimah Mohsin a household name in Singapore, she hopes to do the same in Malaysia, though she is under no illusion that it will be an easy journey. In fact, she’s ready to start from scratch and one of her first few gigs in KL is a makeup booking for a school prom. “I am turning 50 soon and it has always been a dream of mine to move to Malaysia, so I told myself, if I don’t do it now, then when?” Fatimah reflected. “I believe that when we put our heart and soul into something, God-willing, we can succeed.” A post shared by Couture Atelier for Brides ✨ (@fatimahmohsintwg) WHAT MAKES A GOOD ENTREPRENEUR Throughout this interview, Fatimah was candid about the realities of running several businesses. Moving forward, she hopes to do more mentorship to share her experiences and guide other aspiring entrepreneurs. When asked about the qualities that make a good entrepreneur, “everyone talks about patience, resilience and grit, because life is not a bed of roses,” she answered. In the early days of starting a business, one may have “beginner’s luck”, added Fatimah, but that luck fades away once the real work begins. “Now we see a lot of new businesses sprouting up. To start something is really easy, but to maintain, sustain and grow it is the hard part.” Through all the highs and lows, Fatimah is proud of what she and her team have built. “We’ve weathered many storms. We’ve been the best of the best. We have faced competition, but we continue to push forward, because we always want to be the innovators in whatever we do.”",

      • "content": "TOKYO :Nissan is preparing plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and considering closing two factories in Mexico, as the automaker restructures, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Saturday. Nissan said in a statement on its website that recent reports on the potential closure of certain plants were speculative and not based on any official information of the company. \"At this time, we will not be providing further comments on this matter,\" Nissan said in the statement. \"We are committed to maintaining transparency with our stakeholders and will communicate any relevant updates as necessary.\" Yomiuri said the factories in Japan that would be closed were the Oppama plant, where Nissan started production in 1961, and the Shonan plant operated by Nissan Shatai, in which Nissan is a 50 per cent stakeholder. Overseas, Nissan is considering ending production at plants in South Africa, India and Argentina, and closing two factories in Mexico, according to Yomiuri, citing unnamed sources. Japan's third-biggest automaker unveiled sweeping new cost cuts earlier this week, saying it would reduce its workforce by around 15 per cent and cut production plants to 10 from 17 globally as it seeks to push through a turnaround. In its statement on Saturday, Nissan said it had previously announced it would consolidate production of Nissan Frontier and Navara pickups from Mexico and Argentina into a single production hub centralised around the Civac plant in Mexico. It also said that it had announced in March that French alliance partner Renault would buy out its stake in their joint Indian business, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL). The domestic plant closures would mark Nissan's first since closing its Murayama factory in 2001, Yomiuri said. The Oppama plant has annual capacity of around 240,000 cars and employed about 3,900 workers as of end-October. In 2010, it became Nissan's first plant to start production of the Leaf, widely considered the world's first mass-market electric vehicle. The Shonan plant, which produces commercial vans, has an annual capacity of around 150,000 units and employs about 1,200 people, according to Yomiuri.",

      • "content": "TOKYO :Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, sources said on Saturday, as part of a cost-cutting plan the company flagged earlier this week. The automaker is mulling closing Japan's Oppama plant, where Nissan started production in 1961, and the Shonan plant operated by Nissan Shatai, in which Nissan is a 50 per cent stakeholder, the sources said, which would leave it with just three vehicle assembly plants in Japan. Overseas, Nissan is considering ending production at plants in South Africa, India and Argentina, and cutting the number of factories in Mexico, one of the sources said. Japan's third-biggest automaker unveiled sweeping new cost cuts on Tuesday, saying it would reduce its workforce by around 15 per cent and cut production plants to 10 from 17 globally as it seeks to push through a turnaround. The Yomiuri newspaper, which first reported the automakers' possible closing of plants in Japan and overseas, said two factories in Mexico are under consideration. Nissan said in a statement on its website that reports on the potential closure of certain plants were speculative and not based on any official information of the company. \"At this time, we will not be providing further comments on this matter,\" Nissan said in the statement. \"We are committed to maintaining transparency with our stakeholders and will communicate any relevant updates as necessary.\" The more aggressive turnaround steps unveiled by new CEO Ivan Espinosa mark a sharp break with Nissan's strategy under his predecessor Makoto Uchida, who had high hopes of expanding global production and had refused to close domestic plants. The automaker’s fiscal 2024 sales stood at 3.3 million vehicles, down 42 per cent since the 2017 business year. The domestic plant closures would mark Nissan's first since closing its Murayama factory in 2001. Keeping just three home plants open - its Tochigi factory and the Nissan Motor Kyushu and Nissan Shatai Kyushu plants in southern Fukuoka prefecture - would be more than enough to service the domestic market and maintain exports from Japan, one source said. The Oppama plant has annual capacity of around 240,000 cars and employed about 3,900 workers as of end-October. In 2010, it became Nissan's first plant to start producing the Leaf, widely considered the world's first mass-market electric vehicle. The Shonan plant, which produces commercial vans, has an annual capacity of around 150,000 units and employs about 1,200 people.",

      • "content": "In the wake of Operation Sindoor – launched by India in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam – Pakistan has disseminated narratives of strategic triumph, portraying India’s calculated and limited response as indicative of strategic weakness. Such a characterization, however, fundamentally disregards the measured and deliberate nature of India’s operation, which was grounded in a doctrine of proportional response and strategic restraint. It further overlooks India’s overwhelming military superiority and the structural vulnerabilities endemic to Pakistan’s internal political, economic, and military architecture – factors that severely constrain Islamabad’s capacity to wage and sustain a full-scale conflict. The deliberate mischaracterization of India’s restraint as impotence serves neither the people of Pakistan nor its military establishment and economy in the long run. On April 22, 2025, India experienced a devastating terrorist attack in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 civilians, including foreign tourists, were killed. In response, India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025 – a precision military campaign directed at terrorist infrastructure and associated assets located in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Despite the operational efficacy of India’s response, Pakistan swiftly declared a strategic victory, citing minimal damage and retaliatory actions allegedly taken against Indian Air Force assets. Such proclamations, however, fail to account for the conscious and strategic restraint exercised by India. Operation Sindoor was not conceived of as a full-spectrum military engagement but rather as a tactical operation intended to deliver a targeted and unequivocal message. Utilizing advanced airpower and missile technologies, Indian forces executed precision strikes targeting terrorist launchpads and logistical nodes. Verified open-source intelligence and satellite reconnaissance corroborate the neutralization of critical terrorist support infrastructure. According to media reports, among the key achievements of the operation was the confirmed elimination of Abdul Rauf Azhar, the mastermind behind the abduction and beheading of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl in 2002 along with scores of other terrorists. Abdul Rauf Azhar was reportedly operating from a fortified location within Pakistan-administered territory and had reestablished active links with multiple transnational extremist networks. His death, alongside the neutralization of scores of other high-value terrorist operatives, underscores the depth of India’s intelligence penetration and its ability to deliver justice across borders. This strike was not merely symbolic; it represented India’s unwavering resolve to dismantle the ecosystem of impunity that has allowed transnational terrorism to thrive. The operation fits squarely within India’s long-standing doctrine of “active but restrained” military engagement – an approach that seeks to diminish non-state militant capacities without destabilizing the broader regional order. This strategic calculus reflects not only India’s military capabilities but also its broader commitment to responsible international behavior. India’s restrained approach in Operation Sindoor should not be misinterpreted as an indicator of strategic limitation or military deficiency. Rather, it is a reflection of deliberate doctrinal planning and mature strategic thought. India possesses one of the most powerful military establishments globally, equipped to address a wide spectrum of conventional and unconventional threats. As of 2025, India’s armed forces comprise over 1.45 million active personnel, ranking it second globally in terms of troop strength. The country’s defense budget for fiscal year 2024–25 stood at approximately US$81 billion – eight times larger than Pakistan’s allocation of around $10 billion. This financial advantage has enabled India to undertake significant modernization initiatives, investing in technological innovation, force restructuring, and multi-domain capabilities. The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates a fleet exceeding 2,200 combat and support aircraft, including advanced platforms such as the Su-30MKI, Rafale, and Tejas. During Operation Sindoor, the IAF’s effectiveness was further underscored by its use of loitering munitions and long-range drones that executed precise strikes on key Pakistani targets – including airbases at Noor Khan and Rahimyar Khan – while evading and jamming Chinese-supplied air defense systems. The mission was completed in just 23 minutes, demonstrating India’s operational and technological superiority. India’s air defense capabilities also include a mix of legacy and modern indigenous systems, such as the Pechora, OSA-AK, LLAD guns and the Akash short-range surface-to-air missile system. Integrated with the Indian Air Force’s IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System), these platforms formed a multi-tiered shield that effectively neutralized multiple retaliatory attempts by Pakistan on military installations across northern and western India. India’s ability to detect and eliminate advanced foreign-supplied threats – including PL-15 missiles and Turkish-origin UAVs – highlighted the strength of its indigenously developed electronic warfare and counter-UAS systems. On land, the Indian Army commands over 4,200 main battle tanks and a formidable complement of mechanized infantry and artillery units. The use of advanced systems –such as the ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System), the Dhanush artillery platform, and the indigenously built Arjun MBT – exemplifies the modernization drive under the “Make in India” initiative. These technologies played a critical role in layered ground-based air defense and strategic deterrence throughout Operation Sindoor. The Indian Navy, for its part, has made considerable strides in becoming a blue-water force, with 12 destroyers, 17 frigates, and two fully operational aircraft carriers – the INS Vikramaditya and the domestically constructed INS Vikrant – providing credible maritime dominance in the Indian Ocean Region. Complementing these assets are indigenous naval platforms including frigates, corvettes, and submarines, which contribute to a robust maritime security posture. India’s strategic deterrence is further bolstered by its nuclear triad, composed of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and air-delivered nuclear weapons. With the development of MIRV-capable systems such as Agni-V, India has firmly established itself among the world’s elite nuclear-capable states. These capabilities afford New Delhi significant deterrent power and strategic flexibility. Moreover, India’s strategic posture has evolved to encompass new domains of conflict, including space and cyber operations. The creation of the Defense Space Agency and the Defense Cyber Agency marks a proactive shift in Indian military doctrine, ensuring preparedness across emerging and hybrid warfare theatres. India’s space-based capabilities, particularly through ISRO, were evident in Operation Sindoor, where at least ten satellites continuously monitored India’s 7,000 km coastline and northern borders, providing critical situational awareness and command synchronization. The drone warfare domain has also witnessed a transformative evolution. India’s drone industry, supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and a ban on imported drones, has matured rapidly. Entities like the Drone Federation of India now represent over 550 companies and 5,500 pilots. Indigenous UAVs and suicide drones, such as those developed by Alpha Design Technologies, Tata Advanced Systems, and IG Drones, were central to the success of Operation Sindoor, making India’s UAV capabilities both strategic and scalable. Viewed through this lens, Operation Sindoor must be interpreted not as a manifestation of weakness but as an intentional display of disciplined power projection. The limited nature of the operation was designed to assert deterrence, reestablish red lines, and prevent destabilization in an already volatile region. The doctrine of strategic restraint pursued by India in this instance is an articulation of state responsibility – not a failure of will. Despite possessing unmatched coercive capabilities, India remains steadfast in its commitment to non-violence and peaceful coexistence, in line with the Gandhian ideals that underpin its national identity. The use of force, for India, remains a last resort – invoked only when national security and civilian safety are gravely threatened. India’s historical responses to terrorism further support this pattern of calibrated and judicious conduct. From the 1993 Mumbai bombings and the 2001 Parliament attack to the 2008 Mumbai siege and the 2019 Pulwama incident, India has consistently chosen precision over escalation, and legality over unilateralism. In every instance, it has pursued a path that balances deterrence with diplomacy. Pakistan’s strategic posture, in contrast, is deeply undermined by its persistent internal vulnerabilities – ranging from economic fragility and political instability to deteriorating domestic security conditions. Despite its public declarations of preparedness, Pakistan lacks the institutional, fiscal, and social resilience to sustain a protracted conventional war with India. According to projections by the International Monetary Fund, Pakistan’s GDP growth in 2025 is expected to remain subdued at approximately 2.6%, with inflation averaging 6.0%. Public debt has surpassed 73% of GDP, and the country’s external debt obligations now exceed USD 130 billion – indicating a severe limitation on Islamabad’s fiscal capacity to finance large-scale military operations. Politically, Pakistan remains in turmoil. The 2024 general elections were fraught with allegations of rigging, authoritarianism, and interference by the military establishment – undermining democratic legitimacy and fragmenting national consensus. The civilian leadership remains in conflict with the military, further eroding institutional cohesion at a time when unity is critical for national defense. Domestically, Pakistan faces intensifying threats from various insurgent and extremist groups. The resurgence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), along with escalating sectarian violence and an active Baloch separatist insurgency, has claimed over 300 lives among security personnel in the past year alone. These internal security challenges place enormous strain on Pakistan’s military and intelligence apparatus, reducing its operational bandwidth to respond to external threats effectively. Beyond domestic turmoil, Pakistan’s military readiness for sustained conflict is deeply questionable. While it fields a sizable military force, independent assessments have raised concerns about munitions shortages, maintenance issues, and outdated command structures. Reports suggest that Pakistan lacks the capacity to engage in prolonged high-intensity warfare without external assistance – a fact that further highlights the asymmetry in military preparedness between the two nations. Furthermore, political dysfunction impedes effective strategic planning. The absence of a unified political vision and frequent civil-military friction prevent the formation of coherent long-term defense strategies. In this context, Pakistan’s capacity to respond meaningfully to a calibrated Indian military campaign remains severely constrained. Pakistan’s growing strategic alignment with China, particularly in the context of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has introduced additional complexities. While CPEC promises investment worth over USD 62 billion, it has also generated concerns over debt dependence, sovereignty dilution, and localized resistance, particularly in Balochistan. Military cooperation with China, including joint exercises and arms transfers, has increased Islamabad’s tactical capabilities. However, this dependency comes at the cost of strategic autonomy. The deepening asymmetry in the Sino-Pak relationship risks transforming Pakistan into a subordinate geopolitical appendage of Beijing, vulnerable to political coercion and economic exploitation. Domestic unrest over Chinese-funded infrastructure projects, especially among marginalized ethnic groups, reflects broader societal unease with this strategic entanglement. These dynamics raise serious questions about the long-term viability of Pakistan’s current external alignments and their implications for national sovereignty. The temporary cessation of hostilities after Operation Sindoor should not be mistaken as a concession by India. Rather, it was a conditional and humanitarian decision. Indian officials made it unequivocally clear that the continuation of peace is contingent upon the cessation of cross-border terrorism. India retains both the legal justification and operational readiness to resume hostilities should Pakistan fail to comply. Claims of intercepting certain Indian missiles or downing a few aircraft – largely unsubstantiated when assessed against satellite imagery and independent verification – hold little significance in the broader strategic calculus. In strategic terms, victory is not determined by a handful of tactical successes but by the capacity to shape outcomes, sustain escalation dominance and reinforce deterrence. Operation Sindoor accomplished its core objectives: delivering a clear message, degrading militant capabilities and reaffirming India’s regional primacy without triggering widespread destabilization. India’s conduct during and after the operation reflects a profound maturity of strategic thinking. It embodies a responsible power’s refusal to be baited into uncontrolled conflict while defending its citizens and sovereignty with resolve and precision. In contrast, Pakistan must undertake an urgent recalibration of its national priorities. It has to abandon adventurist policies, address its internal fragmentation and pursue meaningful reforms to ensure both domestic economic and political stability and regional peace. The future of South Asia’s strategic stability will depend not on bellicose rhetoric, but on rational policy, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to coexistence. India has demonstrated its commitment. The onus now lies with Pakistan to reciprocate with equal seriousness and responsibility.",

      • "description": "A rule by the National Environment Agency sparked a discussion recently when a woman was issued a warning for failing to be physically present at her stall, despite being heavily pregnant.",
      • "content": "For several months now, Mr Tan has been serving plates of fried hokkien mee to customers at a food centre in central Singapore as though he is a seasoned veteran. However, discerning regulars who patronise the stall might notice a change in taste, because their noodles used to be prepared by a woman. As it turns out, Mr Tan is not the stallholder. The stall belongs to the woman, who is in her 70s. She was ill and has not been mobile. Mr Tan said in Mandarin that she does not have the strength to run the stall by herself for the time being. “I’m temporarily helping her, we’ll monitor what her health is like first. “If she gets better, then she can probably return to work but just come a bit later in the day.” Yet, Mr Tan is aware that by helping out his friend for such a lengthy period of time, it is technically breaching a rule in his friend’s tenancy agreement with the National Environment Agency (NEA) that requires stallholders to personally operate their stalls. Aimed at preventing stallholders from subletting their stalls to others by mandating the physical presence of the registered owner, the regulation ultimately prevents rents and food prices from hiking and allows enterprising hawkers to enter the industry fairly. NEA’s long-standing rule became the subject of controversy earlier this year after one owner of a nasi lemak stall took to Facebook to rail against it, after his pregnant wife – the registered owner – was warned for failing to be physically present at her stall in Yishun . In this case, the stall owner adopted a franchise model, operating at least 26 stalls around Singapore, including in malls and privately run food centres. Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, said in a Facebook post in March that NEA identified and warned more than 230 stalls last year because they were not personally manned by owners. Of these, 30 were issued with notices to terminate their tenancies when they did not heed the warnings. From these warnings and notices, more than 100 stalls terminated their tenancies, while the rest were able to continue operations because they had given valid reasons for their absence. With around half of the hawkers who were warned by NEA ultimately let off the hook because they were found to have genuine reasons, CNA TODAY visited eight hawker centres to find out how stallholders – particularly those who do not operate franchise chains – are coping with this rule. Most agreed that such a rule is effective in deterring subletters and preventing large franchise chains from dominating NEA-run hawker centres, but there were also older stallholders who said that the rule was forcing them out of the trade. Anecdotally, many ageing stallholders still relied on hired assistants to run the majority of the business, sometimes for the whole day. Their reasons include circumstances that are beyond their control, such as illness, fatigue, or suddenly having to pick up supplies. For some, it meant having to explain their absences to NEA officers who carry out regular inspections. A few hawkers said they would even work through sickness and poor health in order to not put their businesses at risk of closure. At present, NEA has said it “appreciates” the challenges that hawkers face in balancing their personal circumstances with business operations. Flexibility is given when there are medical reasons, for example, which lead to hawkers not being able to operate their stalls temporarily. Stallholders may also choose to appoint a joint operator or a nominee to help operate the stall during that period of absence, though they would still need to man their stalls for a period of time. And in the event that the stall has to close for valid reasons, NEA may offer rental waivers, too. Despite the leeway already granted by the authorities, two experts who spoke to CNA TODAY said that there was a need for greater flexibility. They raised suggestions such as allowing stall assistants to \"hold the fort\" temporarily, as well as vacation days for hawkers. Dr Lily Kong, president of Singapore Management University (SMU) who researches urban infrastructure and also co-wrote a paper on hawker culture, said: “The desire to prevent subletting is understandable. However, the manner in which it is effected requires rethinking.” Hawker stalls are meant to provide Singaporeans with the opportunity to start and run a small food business, which is why stallholders are required to personally operate their stalls, the authorities have stated previously. Explaining the rationale behind such a rule, Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, said in parliament that it exists to prevent subletting. “If this requirement is not imposed, the tenant who has successfully bid for the stall could potentially sublet the stall and collect the difference in rent. It may encourage persons to bid for a stall without an intention to run a stall but only to sublet it,” he said. Should the tenant be unable to operate the stall, the tenant is then expected to return the stall to NEA, allowing other new hawkers a fair chance to enter the trade. Dr Koh was responding to a parliamentary question filed by Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency MP Edward Chia after a Yishun stallholder questioned the anti-subletting rule earlier this year. The hawker, Mr Noorman Mubarak, had complained in a Feb 18 Facebook post that he was forced to make his heavily pregnant wife tend their nasi lemak stall at Yishun Park Hawker Centre. The stall is registered under his wife’s name. The stall, Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang, is part of the couple’s chain of more than 20 stores across Singapore, including in hawker centres managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA), malls and privately run eateries. In a Facebook post following the parliamentary debate, Dr Koh said that many people have given feedback to him to support the government’s policy and called for NEA to take firm action against subletters. “Requiring stallholders to physically operate their stalls remains the most practical and fair way of preventing subletting and ensuring that hawker stalls are not misused for rent-seeking motives,” he said. Nevertheless, Dr Koh highlighted the challenges that NEA officers face when detecting subletting, stating that the approach “isn’t always straightforward”. “Subletting is done under the table ... NEA has to conduct thorough investigations to uncover and substantiate such cases. This may include collecting documentary and photo evidence, conducting interviews with hawkers and relevant parties, as well as repeated checks over a period of time, before taking action against errant stallholders.” In response to queries, NEA directed CNA TODAY to publicly available information on what hawkers can or cannot do. Those who wish to expand their businesses can do so by holding up to two cooked food stalls in hawker centres, provided they are able to divide their time and operate the stalls personally. Hawkers have also made use of other arrangements to grow their businesses, such as taking on more stalls at hawker centres with their family members as stallholders. To this, NEA has said it “appreciates” the challenges that hawkers face in balancing their personal circumstances with business operations. If hawkers are temporarily unable to operate their stalls – due to medical reasons, for example – the authority has exercised flexibility in these cases. The stallholder may appoint a joint operator or a nominee to operate the stall during that period of absence. Both the stallholder and the joint operator are each required to personally operate the stall for at least four hours each business day, and their operation hours cannot overlap. In the event that the stall has to shut for a period of time, NEA may offer rental waivers to the stallholder. These rules only apply to tenancy agreements for stallholders in NEA-managed hawker centres. FALLING SICK, FEELING FATIGUED Many hawkers who spoke to CNA TODAY said that the NEA rule was an effective deterrent to those thinking of subletting their stalls. Mr Lew Yew Liang, 55, who owns Shan Zhong Bao Herbal Soup at Berseh Food Centre, said the anti-subletting rule has been in place for many years and he has had no issues abiding by it. “The rule is fair. Our rent is already very cheap compared to coffee shops. By all means, people can rent at coffee shops,” he said. However, to Mr Tan, the fried hokkien mee assistant helping his friend, the requirement to personally man the stall makes the trade unsustainable for older hawkers. “Some people will not be able to carry on with the business at all,” he said. He also said he was ready to explain to the authorities why his friend was unable to tend the stall if approached by officers. “NEA has to understand that hawkers are old. Even though their heart is there, they don’t have the strength to stand there for eight hours.” He did not state if she had considered appointing him as a joint operator, though the rules stipulate that even if she did, she would need to be physically present at the stall for four hours. In any case, Mr Tan said she cannot bear to give up her stall completely, because it would mean the loss of her only source of income. That was why she paid Mr Tan to work as her assistant and take over operations until her condition improved. The stall’s earnings still mainly go to her, but Mr Tan receives a portion of it for his help. Others said that they tapped relatives to share the load and to make sure that the business remained sustainable. A 66-year-old owner of Choon Hwa Coffee Stall in MacPherson, who declined to give her name, said that because she has high blood pressure and gets tired easily, her relatives help out on most mornings and afternoons, while she tends the stall in the evening. She recounted how an NEA officer once approached her to find out why she was not at the stall. She replied that it was “tough” for elderly people to man their stalls for hours on end and asked the officer to try a day of her work. Another hawker said that she did not qualify for rental waivers when she fell sick last year, because her medical certificates did not cover her for a continuous period of one month. Madam Jeanette Koh, 59, who operates a rojak store at Circuit Road Food Centre, said her absence at the stall also led to enquiries from NEA officers. “NEA says if you can’t do it, then just return the stall to it. But if we return the stall (to NEA), then who will give us work? We don’t have credentials, who will hire us?” One hawker who operates a stall at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market and Hawker Centre that sells ayam penyet (a fried chicken dish), said he was coughing for eight days, but he continued to work with a mask on in order to comply with NEA’s anti-subletting rule. This was because he could not allow his assistants to work on his behalf while he was absent, he said. He declined to be named. TO MAKE ENDS MEET For similar reasons, it will also be difficult for him to leave Singapore for any Haj pilgrimages in future, because closing his stall when he is away means lost earnings. This was a sentiment echoed by a few hawkers who feared losing potential earnings because they could not keep their stalls open with help from hired assistants while they rested at home. For Ms Joanne Lee, 52, the owner of Fu He Turtle Soup at Berseh Food Centre, the requirement prevents her from extending her operating hours beyond 7pm to capture the supper crowd and earn more for her business. “If I always have to be here all the time, it is difficult to sustain operations in the long run.” Mr Melvin Chew, who owns the Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap stall at Chinatown Complex, said he worries for the future generation of hawkers since young people these days value work-life balance. “In the past, old hawkers had no life. They simply worked every day and missed the time they had with their children,” the 47-year-old added. “But nowadays, people feel that they should cherish the moment. So if they have to be at the stall every day from a certain time to a certain time, they have no freedom to spend time with their children or think about starting a family.” He also said that if Singapore wants hawker culture to remain , then it has to provide younger hawkers with confidence that they can establish a branding for themselves and their businesses. Not all agree, though. There were some hawkers, such as Mr Eddy Leck, who told CNA TODAY that it was possible to find that balance despite the long hours as a hawker. For example, if there are no customers, there is no need for the stallholder to be present to work long hours. The hawker could close the stall and come back later when the crowds are back. The 49-year-old owner of Soon Heng Coffee Stall at Circuit Road Food Centre said: \"I have no difficulties being here all the time. We are making a living, of course we have to be here. We're doing business.” LIMITED EXPANSION OPPORTUNITIES At the end of the day, hawker centres are designed to provide opportunities for hawkers to directly operate their own small food businesses, which is why corporates cannot bid directly for hawker stalls. Some leeway is given for expansion opportunities. NEA’s current rules allow individuals to hold a maximum of two cooked food stalls in hawker centres, provided they are able to divide their time and operate the stalls personally. In reality, executing this is difficult, some hawkers said. Ms Li Ruifang, 41, recalled how her father gave up his prawn noodle stall at Whampoa Food Centre to help her find her footing in the food-and-beverage industry when she decided to start her own stall. The earnings from his stall had put food on the table for her family since the 1970s. Originally, her father Lee Wong Leong, 75, wanted to retain ownership of his original stall and allow his sister to operate it, while he would head to Ms Li’s stall in Tekka Centre to help out full-time. For a time, this was an ideal arrangement for them. Mr Lee’s earnings from Whampoa allowed him to keep a stable income, his daughter gets to learn directly from an experienced hand, and his sister gets to help out in the family business. Then, NEA found out about the arrangement in 2014, and because Mr Lee could not divide his time commuting between the two stalls due to his age, he turned over ownership of his Whampoa stall to his sister. Ms Li said of her father’s sacrifice: “I do feel very grateful for how he gave up his stall to come over to Tekka to help me out. If not for him, I believe it would have taken a longer time for me to get into the rhythm of helming the stall.” \"MORE FLEXIBILITY NEEDED\" Acknowledging the effectiveness of NEA’s rule against subletting, experts on hawker culture said it would be difficult to remove such a regulation without hurting the industry as a whole. Doing so would also risk “unintended misuse” by hawkers, Mr Ryan Kueh said. He is the author of From Street to Stalls, a book about the history and evolution of Singapore’s hawker culture. Without such a rule, it would inadvertently give rise to subletting, allowing people to exploit public subsidies for personal profit by turning stalls into rental assets. “We first need to consider its underlying principle – preventing the misappropriation of a public good for profiteering,” he said. On the other hand, there could be “some flexibility for elderly hawkers or those facing genuine difficulties”, he added. On this point, Dr Kong from SMU had some suggestions for the authorities to consider. For example, there may be provisions for workers to take vacation leave in ways that do not affect their income. “It is not unreasonable to have some provision for ‘locums’ to stand in occasionally for hawkers or for helpers to hold the fort for periods of time,” Dr Kong said. Mr Kueh lauded NEA’s recent policy to allow hawkers to hire assistants holding long-term visit passes, which helps to ease workloads. Previously, only Singapore citizens and permanent residents could work as stall assistants in hawker centres managed by NEA and its appointed operators. Hawkers could also hire their spouses who have these visit passes. The policy was relaxed from Jan 1 to allow hawkers to hire any of these pass holders who have been approved to work here. Beyond policy, Mr Kueh said more must be done to boost the attractiveness of the industry to young entrants. “The larger issue is our outdated expectations of hawkers – expecting stalls to be open excessively for long hours or to sell food at very low prices – and the second-order effects they create,” he added. “These expectations pressure hawkers to offer food at low costs and in turn receive low (profit) margins, endure excessively long working hours and remain trapped in a cycle of working more to sustain sufficient income.”",

      • "content": "ADEN: Israel struck Yemen's Red Sea ports of Hodeidah and Salif on Friday (May 16), continuing its campaign to degrade Houthi military capabilities and warning that the group's top leader could be targeted if attacks on Israel persist. The Houthis have continued to fire missiles at Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, although they have agreed to halt attacks on US ships. Israel has carried out retaliatory strikes in response, including one on May 6 that damaged Yemen's main airport in Sanaa and killed several people. On Friday, the Israeli military said it dropped over 30 munitions on Houthi targets in its eighth such attack. It said the ports of Hodeidah and Salif were being used to transfer weapons, reiterating its warnings to residents of those areas to evacuate. The Israeli strikes killed at least one person and injured nine, the Houthi-run health ministry said in a statement. Residents in Hodeidah said they heard four loud booms and saw smoke rising from the port following the strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement that they would hunt down the Houthis' top leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi. \"If the Houthis continue to fire missiles at the State of Israel, they will be severely harmed, and we will also hurt the leaders,\" they said, adding that al-Houthi could join the list of militant figures killed by Israel, such as Hamas' Yahya Sinwar and Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a senior group figure, described the Israeli threats as \"illusions\", saying on X that they were aimed at buying time by setting \"unattainable goals.\" The Houthis are part of Iran's so-called \"Axis of Resistance\" against Israeli and US interests in the Middle East, alongside Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. About 60 percent of the Yemeni population lives under their control. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, the Houthis have launched dozens of missile and drone attacks toward Israel, most of which have been intercepted or landed short.",

      • "content": "THE HAGUE: The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court , Karim Khan, has stepped aside temporarily as an investigation by the United Nations into alleged sexual misconduct by him nears its end, his office said on Friday (May 16). The move is unprecedented and there is no clear procedure for replacing Khan. The situation creates added uncertainty for the ICC, which is already facing an existential crisis due to US sanctions over its arrest warrants for Israeli officials. Khan's office said the prosecutor had taken leave until the end of the investigation by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services. In a written statement, Khan's attorneys rejected all allegations of wrongdoing. They said he said he had taken leave because media attention on the matter affected his ability to focus on his work but did not intend to resign. \"Our client remains the prosecutor, has not stepped down and has no intention of doing so,\" law firm Carter-Ruck said. In a letter sent to his staff and seen by Reuters, the prosecutor said that he had been keeping his position under constant review. \"In light of escalating media reports, I have made the considered decision to take leave,\" Khan said. \"My decision is driven by deep and unwavering commitment to the credibility of our office and the court, and to safeguard the integrity of the process and fairness to all involved,\" he said. Khan had earlier ignored calls by NGOs and ICC staff to step down while the investigation was under way. Several of those NGOs on Friday hailed his decision to temporarily step aside as a sign that no one is above the law. \"Stepping aside helps protect the court's credibility and the trust of victims, staff, and the public. For the alleged victim and whistle blowers, this is also a moment of recognition and dignity,\" said Danya Chaikel of human rights watchdog FIDH. Others said Khan's leave would not derail the ICC's investigations as the office of the prosecutor is not a one-man show. \"In fact, removing an individual whose alleged behaviour may have fuelled a toxic work culture may strengthen the office’s ability to carry out its mandate with professionalism and public trust,” Alix Vuillemin of the Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice told Reuters. The ICC has high-profile war crimes investigations under way into the Israel-Hamas conflict and Russia's war in Ukraine. At Khan's request, the ICC issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin on suspicion of deporting children from Ukraine, and for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Neither country is a member of the court and both deny the accusations and reject ICC jurisdiction. The ICC's investigation into Israel's conduct led the US administration of President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Khan, which the ICC president says have put the court itself at risk. Sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter, told Reuters that Khan had spoken to UN investigators last week in what was believed to be the final interview of a months-long outside investigation into the allegations that started in December. It was unclear when the probe would finish. The ICC's two deputy prosecutors would take over his duties in the meantime, his office said.",

      • "content": "A Republican proposal to block states from regulating artificial intelligence for 10 years drew opposition on Friday from a bipartisan group of attorneys general in California, New York, Ohio and other states that have regulated high-risk uses of the technology. The measure included in President Donald Trump's tax cut bill would preempt AI laws and regulations passed recently in dozens of states. A group of 40 state attorneys general, including Republicans from Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas, Utah and Virginia and other states, urged Congress to ditch the measure on Friday, as the U.S. House of Representatives' budget committee geared up for a Sunday night hearing. \"Imposing a broad moratorium on all state action, while Congress fails to act in this area is irresponsible and deprives consumers of reasonable protections,\" said the group. The attorney general from California - which is home to prominent AI companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Anthropic - was among the Democrats who signed the letter. \"I strongly oppose any effort to block states from developing and enforcing common-sense regulation; states must be able to protect their residents by responding to emerging and evolving AI technology,\" Attorney General Rob Bonta said. California implemented a raft of bills this year limiting specific uses of AI, illustrating the kind of laws that would be blocked under the moratorium. Like several other states, California has criminalized the use of AI to generate sexually explicit images of individuals without their consent. The state also prohibits unauthorized deepfakes in political advertising, and requires healthcare providers to notify patients when they are interacting with an AI and not a human. Healthcare provider networks, also known as HMOs, are barred in California from using AI systems instead of doctors to decide medical necessity. House Republicans said in a hearing Tuesday that the measure was necessary to help the federal government in implementing AI, for which the package allocates $500 million. \"It's nonsensical to do that if we're going to allow 1,000 different pending bills in state legislatures across the country to become law,\" said Jay Obernolte, a Republican from California who represents part of Silicon Valley, including Mountain View where Google is based. \"It would be impossible for any agency that operates in all the states to be able to comply with those regulations,\" he said. Google has called the proposed moratorium \"an important first step to both protect national security and ensure continued American AI leadership.\" That position will be tested if the measure makes it to the Senate. It will need to clear the budget reconciliation process, which is supposed to be used only for budget-related legislation.",

      • "content": "With Napoli once again within touching distance of Serie A glory, a new figure has emerged at the heart of their resurgence as Scott McTominay inches closer to reverential status among fans across the city. The 28-year-old Scot has been crucial to Napoli's title hopes and has become a player to rally around since former talisman Khvicha Kvaratskhelia departed for Paris St Germain in January. The numbers speak for themselves, with the midfielder having 11 goals and six assists this season in the league, netting five alone in April, enough to be named Serie A Player-of-the-Month. The work ethic and fierce loyalty were among the reasons Napoli manager Antonio Conte paid 30.5 million euros ($34.15 million) in the pre-season for McTominay, who left Manchester United after a 22-year stay. A transfer that former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had strong feelings about. \"How you can sell Scott is beyond me,\" Solskjaer told the BBC in an interview earlier in May. Conte has seemingly agreed as he allowed McTominay to a more offensive role where he has made a dynamic duo with veteran striker Romelu Lukaku. \"He never had a primary role at Man United, while here we gave him one,\" Conte said earlier in May about McTominay. \"He's worked hard and now he's a complete player. His improvement has been shared by the whole team.\" NEAPOLITAN LOVE In a city plastered with banners, pictures, and graffiti of Napoli hero Diego Maradona, murals of McTominay have started popping up across Naples. Passionate Napoli supporters have affectionately dubbed him 'McFratm' — a playful fusion of his name and 'Fratm', the Neapolitan word for 'my brother'. \"We love him because he is strong, serious, and really works hard on the field. When the match is over, he's exhausted from giving it his all,\" lifelong Napoli fan and journalist Achille Petti Campione told Reuters. \"Whether we win or lose, no one reflects the mood of the supporters more than McTominay right after the whistle. He plays and reacts with his heart.\" If McTominay can steer Napoli through the final stretch and secure their second Scudetto in three years, the streets of Naples, always alive with energy, may just find another name to immortalize in their illustrious pantheon. \"Blond, tall, and Scottish—with the passion of a Neapolitan. No wonder Naples has fallen in love with him,\" Campione added. ($1 = 0.8930 euros)",
