      • "content": "While his knack for snapping up stocks struggling with market conditions and scandals made him billions, Buffet was still relatively slow to invest in tech companies. Billionaire investor Warren Buffet said on Saturday that he wants to step down as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the year. The revelation came as a surprise as the 94-year-old had previously said he did not plan to retire. Buffett, one of the world's richest people and most accomplished investors, took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when it was a textiles manufacturer. He turned the company into a conglomerate by finding other businesses and stocks to buy that were selling for less than they were worth. His success made him a Wall Street icon. It also earned him the nickname “Oracle of Omaha,” a reference to the Nebraska city where Buffett was born and chose to live and work. Here are some of his best and worst investments over the years: Buffett’s Best Investments Purchased in 1967, the company was one of Buffett’s first insurance investments. Insurance float — the premium money insurers can invest between the time when policies are bought and when claims are made — provided the capital for many of Berkshire’s investments over the years and helped fuel the company’s growth. Berkshire’s insurance division has grown to include Geico, General Reinsurance and several other insurers. The float totalled $173 billion (€152.7bn) at the end of the first quarter this year. Warren Buffet bought significant chunks of stocks in the above companies during times when they were out of favour because of scandals or market conditions. Collectively, the shares are now worth over $100bn (€88.3bn) more than what Buffett paid for them, not including all the dividends he has collected over the years. Buffett long said that he didn’t understand tech companies well enough to value them and pick the long-term winners, but he started buying Apple shares in 2016. He later explained that he bought more than $31bn (€27.4bn) worth because he understood the iPhone maker as a consumer products company with extremely loyal customers. The value of his investment grew to more than $174bn (€153.7bn) before Buffett started selling Berkshire Hathaway’s shares. On the advice of his late investing partner Charlie Munger, Buffett bet big on the genius of BYD founder Wang Chanfu in 2008 with a $232 million (€205m) investment in the Chinese electric vehicle maker. The value of that stake soared to more than $9bn (€8bn) before Buffett began selling it off. Berkshire’s remaining stake is still worth about $1.8bn (€1.6bn). Buffett repeatedly pointed to his 1972 purchase as a turning point in his career. Buffett said Munger persuaded him that it made sense to buy great businesses at good prices as long as they had enduring competitive advantages. Previously, Buffett had primarily invested in companies of any quality as long as they were selling for less than he thought they were worth. Berkshire paid $25m (€22.1m) for See’s and recorded pre-tax earnings of $1.7bn (€1.5bn) from the candy company through 2011. The amount continued to grow but Buffett didn’t routinely highlight it. Utilities provide a large and steady stream of profits for Berkshire. The conglomerate paid $2.1bn (€1.9bn), or about $35.1 (€30.9) per share, for Des Moines-based MidAmerican Energy in 2000. The utility unit subsequently was renamed and made several acquisitions, including PacifiCorp and NV Energy. The utilities added more than $3.7bn (€3.3bn) to Berkshire’s profit in 2024, although Buffett has said they are now worth less than they used to be because of the liability they face related to wildfires. Buffett’s Worst Investments Buffett had said his investment in the Berkshire Hathaway textile mills was probably his worst investment ever. The textile company he took over in 1965 bled money for many years before Buffett finally shut it down in 1985, though Berkshire did provide cash for some of Buffett’s early acquisitions. Of course, the Berkshire shares Buffett began buying for $7 (€6.2) and $8 (€7.1) a share in 1962 are now worth $809,350 (€714,689.4) per share, so even Buffett’s worst investment turned out relatively alright. Buffett said he made an awful blunder by buying Dexter in 1993 for $433m (€382.4m), a mistake made even worse because he used Berkshire stock for the deal. Buffett says he essentially gave away 1.6% of Berkshire for a worthless business. Buffett said that some of his worst mistakes over the years were the investments and deals that he didn’t make. Berkshire easily could have made billions if Buffett had been comfortable investing in Amazon, Google or Microsoft early on. However, it wasn’t just tech companies he missed out on. Buffett told shareholders he was caught “sucking his thumb” when he failed to follow through on a plan to buy 100 million Walmart shares that would be worth nearly $10 billion (€8.8bn) today. Not long before the COVID pandemic, Buffett seemed to sour on most of his bank stocks. Repeated scandals involving Wells Fargo gave him a reason to start unloading his 500 million shares, many of them for around $30 (€26.5) per share. However, he also sold off his J.P. Morgan stake at prices less than $100 (€88.3). Both stocks have more than doubled since then. Buffett and Munger, Berkshire’s former vice chairman, took control of Blue Chip in 1970 when the customer rewards program was generating $126m (€111.2m) in sales. But as trading stamps fell out of favour with retailers and consumers, sales steadily declined; in 2006, they totalled a mere $25,920 (€22,881.4). However, Buffett and Munger used the float that Blue Chip generated to acquire See’s Candy, Wesco Financial and Precision Castparts, which are all steady contributors to Berkshire.",

      • "content": "While the US Federal Reserve is still under significant pressure from the Trump administration to slash interest rates, some experts believe that rate cuts may not come for another few months at least. The Federal Reserve will likely keep its key short-term interest rate unchanged on Wednesday, despite weeks of criticism and demands from President Donald Trump for the Fed to reduce borrowing costs. After causing a sharp drop in financial markets two weeks ago by saying he could fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Trump subsequently backed off and said he had no intention of doing so. Still, he and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have said the Fed should cut rates. They argue that inflation has steadily cooled and high borrowing costs are no longer needed to restrain price increases. The Fed sharply ramped up its short-term rate in 2022 and 2023 as pandemic-era inflation spiked. Separately, Elon Musk, the head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, last Wednesday suggested that DOGE should look more closely at the Fed’s spending on its facilities. The heightened scrutiny shows that even as the Trump administration backs off its threats to fire Powell, the Fed is still subject to political pressures, despite its status as an independent agency. Fed likely to stick to its guns this week Even so, the Fed will almost certainly leave its key rate unchanged at about 4.3% when it meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Powell and many of the other 18 officials that sit on the Fed’s rate-setting committee have said they want to see how Trump’s tariffs affect the economy before making any moves. Trump, however, on Friday said on the social media platform Truth Social that there is “NO INFLATION” and claimed that grocery and egg prices have fallen, and that gas has dropped to $1.98 (€1.8) a gallon. That’s not entirely true: Grocery prices have jumped 0.5% in two of the past three months and are up 2.4% from a year ago. Gas and oil prices have declined — gas costs are down 10% from a year ago — continuing a longer-running trend that has continued in part because of fears the economy will weaken. Still, AAA says gas prices nationwide average $3.18 (€2.8) a gallon. Inflation did drop noticeably in March, an encouraging sign, though in the first three months of the year it was 3.6%, according to the Fed’s preferred gauge, well above its 2% target. Tariffs likely to delay rate cuts Without tariffs, economists say it’s possible the Fed would soon reduce its benchmark rate, because it is currently at a level intended to slow borrowing and spending and cool inflation. Yet the Fed can’t now cut rates with Trump’s broad tariffs likely to raise prices in the coming months. Vincent Reinhart, chief economist at BNY, said that the Fed is “scarred” by what happened in 2021, when prices rose due to supply issues and Powell and other Fed officials said the increase would likely be “transitory.” Instead, inflation soared to a peak of 9.1% in June 2022. This time they will be more cautious, he said. “That’s a Fed that is going to have to wait for evidence and be slow to adjust on that evidence,” Reinhart said. Plus, Trump’s badgering of Powell makes it harder for the Fed chair to cut rates because doing so anytime soon would be seen as knuckling under to the White House, said Preston Mui, an economist at Employ America. “You could imagine a world where there isn’t pressure from the Trump administration and they cut rates...sooner, because they feel comfortable making the argument that they’re doing so because of the data,” he said. For his part, Powell said last month that tariffs would likely push up inflation and slow the economy, a tricky combination for the Fed. The central bank would typically raise rates — or at least keep them elevated — to fight inflation, while it would cut them to spur the economy if unemployment rose. Powell has said that the impact of the tariffs on inflation could be temporary — a one-time price increase — but most recently said it “could also be more persistent.” That suggests that Powell will want to wait, potentially for months, to ensure tariffs don’t sustainably raise inflation before considering a rate cut. Fed rate cuts could still be a few months away Some economists forecast the Fed won’t cut rates until its September meeting, or even later. Yet Fed officials could move sooner if the tariffs hit the economy hard enough to cause layoffs and push up unemployment. Wall Street investors appear to expect such an outcome — they project that the first cut will occur in July, according to futures pricing. Separately, Musk criticised the Fed Wednesday for spending $2.5 billion (€2.2bn) on an extensive renovation of two of its buildings in Washington, D.C. “Since at the end of the day, this is all taxpayer money, we should certainly look to see if indeed the Federal Reserve is spending $2.5 billion on their interior designer,” Musk said. “That’s an eyebrow raiser.” Fed officials acknowledge that the cost of the renovations have risen as prices for building materials and labour have spiked due to the post-pandemic inflation. And former Fed officials, speaking on background, say that local regulations forced the Fed to do more of the expansion underground, rather than making the buildings taller, which added to the cost. Meanwhile, Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor and a potential candidate to replace Powell as chair when Powell’s term expires next year, said recently that the Fed has attracted greater scrutiny because of its failure to keep prices in check. “The Fed’s current wounds are largely self-inflicted,” he said in a speech during an International Monetary Fund conference in late April, in which he also slammed the Fed for participating in a global forum on climate change. “A strategic reset is necessary to mitigate losses of credibility, changes in standing, and most important, worse economic outcomes for our fellow citizens.” Powell, for his part, said last month that “Fed independence is very widely understood and supported in Washington, in Congress, where it really matters.”",

• "content": "As the Vatican gears up to elect the successor to Pope Francis, technology is being deployed to prevent leaks during the secretive papal vote. While the world continues to mourn Pope Francis following his death on Easter Monday, preparations are underway to secure various buildings around Vatican City for the vote for his successor. The conclave will begin on May 7, some 16 days after the Pontiff’s death, to allow for mourning and preparations. In the confines of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, 135 cardinals from around the world will vote on who should take over the leadership of the Catholic Church. In the past, Vatican City and Italian authorities have relied on anti-drone technology, electronic jammers, and ancient oaths to maintain the election’s integrity. Given the tech advancements in the 12 years since the last papal election in 2013, what security measures will likely be put in place to avoid technological breaches of the secretive process? No-fly zone and anti-drone measures For Pope Francis’ funeral , Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Italian authorities had anti-drone \"bazookas\" on hand, \"ready to neutralise any drones that might appear\" over Rome. That was in case drones breached a no-fly order that is already in place. The newspaper also indicated that the anti-drone technology was to be used with ground tech, like computer jamming systems to disturb frequencies and telephone communications. Euronews Next reached out to Italy’s Ministry of the Interior to independently confirm these measures were in place for the funeral and whether the no-fly zone would be extended during the papal election, but did not receive a reply at the time of publication. Two main security teams look after the Vatican: the Pontifical Swiss Guard and the Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State. A spokesperson for the Swiss National Guard said they will not be providing any information about security procedures at the conclave due to \"the sensitive nature of [their] responsibilities\". Euronews Next did not receive an immediate response from the Gendarmerie. Tech used in the past to prevent leaks While some of the current security preparations are secret, we can learn from what papal authorities put in place in 2013, when Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as Pope Francis . A report from Reuters in 2013 said that workers laid down a \"false floor\" over the tiles in the Sistine Chapel, where the vote takes place, with electronic jammers to block any signals coming out of the chapel. At the time, the report said Vatican officials also swept the chapel and the guest house where the cardinals stay with anti-bugging scanners to make sure no hidden microphones are in place. A report from Italian newspaper La Stampa at the time said that a Faraday cage was also installed around the Sistine Chapel to block bug signals. The cage is a metal screen or container that blocks any electrostatic or electromagnetic radiation from getting through the exterior. In 1996, former Pope John Paul II set down rules that banned electronic organisers, radios, newspapers, TVs and recorders were banned as a result. The rules also ask the Camerlengo, the temporary head of the Church, to conduct \"careful and stringent checks\" with \"trustworthy individuals of technical ability\" to make sure that no audiovisual equipment has been “secretly installed” to record and transmit to the outside. An old oath of secrecy Another anti-leak strategy is the several sworn oaths that those involved have to take. Staff, officials and the conclavists have to declare a few days before entering the conclave that they \"promise and swear... [to] not use any kind of transmitter or receiver or any photographic equipment,\" even after the election of the new pope unless they are granted \"special permission and explicit authorisation\" to do so. A similar oath of secrecy is said during the first meeting of the conclave, where they promise to \"maintain scrupulous secrecy concerning everything discussed in the meetings of the cardinals, whether before or during the conclave and concerning everything that in any way relates to the election of the Roman Pontiff\". During the conclave, electors are not allowed to send letters, writing, or anything printed to their fellow cardinals, nor outside. Conclavists also don't have access to newspapers while the discussions are going on. Anyone who breaks the various oaths faces immediate excommunication by the Apostolic See. Taking the oath doesn’t mean that information about the process won't still be leaked. In 2005, a German cardinal leaked the selection of Joseph Ratzinger for pope to German media so they were able to report the choice before the protodeacon was able to say the habitual declaration \"Habemus papam\" - \"we have a pope\". Pope Francis himself broke the longstanding confidentiality rule through his book published last year, where he alleged to have been used in a failed attempt to block Benedict XVI, the 2005 frontrunner.",

      • "content": "Hampered by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project is gaining momentum with the return of US President Donald Trump to office and the trade war between Washington and Beijing. The return of Donald Trump to the White House and the trade war between the United States and China have put the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) back in the spotlight. This logistics corridor project, which was officially launched in 2023 at a G20 summit in Delhi, aims to facilitate trade in goods, energy and data. This new trade route would bypass the Suez Canal and link Europe to India via Israel and the Gulf monarchies. \"We need a corridor like this more than ever, because not only do we have to deal with the problems we have with China, but we also have to deal with the fact that we are now in regional competition between the United States, China and Europe,\" MEP Morten Løkkegaard (Renew Europe/Denmark) told Euronews. \"Production in India is much closer to Europe than in China\", which would reduce delivery times, adds MEP Niels Flemming Hansen (EPP/Denmark) and vice-chairman of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with India. Several entry points into Europe are on the table: the ports of Piraeus in Greece, Marseille in France and Trieste in Italy. \"We should think of IMEC not as a line but as a network, so that its own resilience and ability to withstand disruption would be considerably increased if it were based on different entry points\", says Alberto Rizzi, a policy researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). \"France seems to be ahead of the other European parties,\" Rizzi added. Competition from China? According to Rizzi, not all the participating countries have the same motivations. In addition to better access to European and Gulf markets, India is looking for a way to escape China's encircling strategy. The Gulf monarchies see an opportunity to position themselves at the centre of future trade in goods and energy. For its part, the European Union is seeking to reduce its dependence on China through a de-risking strategy. \"It's also a way of bringing not only the world's largest democracy, but also the most populous country and the potential of an enormous commercial and industrial partner, India, ever closer to the European orbit,\" Rizzi explained. While the New Spice Route is seen as a means of competing with the New Silk Roads project initiated by Beijing, the researcher doubts its ability to rival the Chinese economic corridor. \"We should not see the IMEC as a competitor because the New Silk Road is a global initiative by China that essentially encompasses the whole world, whereas the IMEC has a key regional dimension,\" said Rizzi. \"We should not see, especially in the case of the Gulf countries, a commitment to the IMEC as a way of closing the door on China.\" Although the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza slowed down the New Spice Route project, it now seems to be enjoying renewed interest. The European Union and the Gulf states are not the only ones courting the Asian giant. The United States is also on board, as evidenced by US Vice President JD Vance's recent trip to India to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement between Washington and New Delhi.",

      • "content": "In an interview with Euronews Next, Brittany Kaiser unpacks her advocacy for open-source artificial intelligence (AI) in government. Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Brittany Kaiser says that online data protection has scarcely improved since she testified to UK parliament in 2018 that millions of people may have had their Facebook data harvested. The scandal broke in 2016 after it emerged that more than 87 million people may have had their data collected on Facebook through a personality quiz. Though it is unclear how that data was used, Kaiser said that Cambridge Analytica did \"chargeable work\" with Donald Trump’s election campaign and Leave. EU Brexit. Both organisations said there was no contract signed to work with the analytics company. “I wish that I could say that it has gotten better. I would say there are now many parts of the world where people are starting to be legally protected, which wasn't the case in 2018,” Kaiser told Euronews Next. Though she said there are more data protection laws now, referencing Europe’s GDPR, she said there are no federal data laws in the US and that if an individual wants to take legal action against companies using their data without permission, it takes a lot of time in the courtroom. “If you don't want to spend a lot of time in a courtroom or dealing with the law, I would say technically we are less protected because the technology is so much better at targeting,” she added. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also making things worse, especially when it comes to election interference, she said. “The rise of generative AI has made it so much easier to make things look like they are real. Back in the Cambridge Analytica days, we had very, very basic algorithmic creation of content that the world was using at that time,” she said. “It's nothing like what exists today, where you can mimic reality because the AI has become so good,” she said. Kaiser said that despite working to advocate for digital rights, even she has been fooled by AI-generated images circulating online. On one occasion, she thought something awful was happening in New York when she was momentarily convinced that an AI-generated image of a car being set alight in Manhattan was real. “Knowing that it's difficult to even find a real picture of something anymore, I would say that can very easily be abused for politics or for commercial purposes - or for whatever purposes people want to use,” she said. “We're still in the scenario where you know a lot of our intelligence agencies are saying that ‘there's just as much money being spent by Russia, China, and Iran on disinformation communications,’” she added. “But the technology is so much better that the impact is more and the money goes further to whatever aim it has”. AI in elections Last year, more than 60 countries headed to the polls in what was a super-cycle of global elections. Research is limited on whether AI played a role in them. But a recent paper by the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) at The Alan Turing Institute found that during the UK’s general election, there were 16 viral cases of AI disinformation or deepfakes. The researchers also analysed the US election and found examples of AI-generated disinformation. These included AI bot farms mimicking US voters and allegations against immigrants, which also led to viral AI-enabled content being referenced by some political candidates and received widespread media coverage. While the paper said there was not enough evidence that AI-enabled disinformation had a measurable impact on the US presidential election results, it did add that this AI content did shape US election discourse by “amplifying other forms of disinformation and inflaming political debates”. Aside from elections, Kaiser said one of her biggest concerns is the contracts that governments are signing with the Big Tech AI companies, such as the ChatGPT maker OpenAI. “Because governments are willing to try to use AI, a lot of them are licensing AI products from large companies that are closed source, black boxes, and our data and our government data is just going into these closed source for-profit systems, and there are no protections,” she said. Open source generally means the software’s source code is available to everyone in the public domain to use, modify, and distribute, and the data that trains the AI is shared. Whereas, closed source AI means that the code and data the AI is trained on are kept in the company’s full control and ownership. However, there could be national security implications of having large open source AI models in the hands of anyone who can code. “OpenAI has a vast majority of government AI contracts and for all of our personal data, as well as all of the government data from all these different government agencies and departments, all going into OpenAI's corporate servers, it creates an even bigger liability,” Kaiser said. She added that this is similar to how Cambridge Analytica and Facebook were over a decade ago, but in OpenAI’s case, it is now “a lot more data, especially sensitive data, that is being fed into those systems”. Kaiser is now pushing for governments to adopt more open-source AI companies, both at the federal and state levels. She said open-source is “essential for civilian-facing government agencies, especially now when it's become popular for the first time for the public to be able to audit what the government is doing with databases and with data”. She argued that more open-source AI systems would be a more ethical step forward to gain public trust as governments start to adopt AI, which in the US comes as there is no federal legislation to protect people from how their data might be used in these systems. Kaiser has recently taken on a new role at open source AI platform ElizaOS, which builds AI agents. She is leading the company’s new subsidiary to help the US public sector build open-source AI technology for governments. ‘Common sense regulation’ Kaiser is hopeful that the Trump administration may take data protection more seriously. “This particular government seems quite set on having serious federal technology policy and engaging with technologists and hiring the technologists to run a lot of government departments,” she said. “So I'm hopeful that that means that we'll actually see something happening in the US. “It would be quite great if we could finally see federal legislation to protect American citizens and to protect our rights in the face of growing tech adoption”. However, the US made it clear at the AI Action Summit in Paris in February that overregulation of the technology could upend innovation, and that the country would be leading on not putting extraneous regulation on these technologies. “Excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative sector just as it's taking off,\" US Vice President JD Vance said. Kaiser does not see this as hindering her ambitions for US data protections or open-source AI, but rather that there is a balancing act when it comes to regulation. “I certainly don't agree with [OpenAI CEO] Sam Altman when he says that we should allow any data to be used for our models so that we can be competitive. I think that's very ‘move fast and break things’ for me,” she said. However, she said she also does not think that extraneous regulation is going to help because it ends up not being technically implementable, which she said happened in some components of Europe’s GDPR. “But I do believe that common sense regulation that is co-written with technologists so that it's easily implementable... would be a good thing for Americans and for the economy,” she said.",

      • "content": "Groups across Europe are calling for a day of anti-tourism protests in June, foreshadowing another summer of unrest. Before visiting Barcelona in March, I’d read the headlines with a healthy mix of scepticism and concern. Tourists sprayed with water guns. Locals shout: ‘Tourists go home!’ More protests planned. They painted the picture of a people fed up with the economy of coming and going. And there was no escaping it: my presence could contribute to the problem. I was travelling to run the city’s marathon – one of its biggest international events – and wondered if I’d picked the wrong time. As is so often the case, the reality was more nuanced. Big events bring big money – but also big crowds International marathons are big business. According to its title sponsor, Bank of America, the 2022 Chicago Marathon generated about €340 million, created almost 3,000 jobs and pumped €145 million into the local economy. Barcelona’s marathon isn’t quite on that scale, but still 27,000 people signed up for the March race – 7,000 more than ever before. That’s roughly the number nine cruise ships would carry at full capacity, all descending on the city for one morning of hard work and one night of celebratory cava and vermút. Would the city bristle at yet another influx of visitors eager to get lost in the Gothic Quarter, marvel at Gaudí’s masterpieces and feast their way through the mercats? Not at all. I wasn’t met with water guns – although they would’ve been welcome at points along the 42-kilometre course – but with cries of encouragement. Thousands of locals lined the streets. The energy was electric. The city felt proud. None of this was a surprise. Marathons have yet to become targets for anti-tourism protestors, even if ‘ race-cations ’ are on the rise. Still, the tension is real, and the impacts of overcrowding aren’t hard to find. Why some locals are reaching their limit Barcelona is one of Europe’s most visited cities. More than 12 million people visit each year, and about five million make a beeline for Park Güell and Sagrada Família alone. The pressure on these places – and on the people who live nearby – is immense. Yet tourism accounts for more than 125,000 jobs and nearly 15 per cent of the city’s economy. For many locals, this isn’t about banning tourists . It’s about finding a sustainable balance. “Barcelona is a much calmer, safer and more welcoming city than what is reported, but sometimes we pay more attention to isolated events that make a lot of noise,” says Jordi Luque Sanz, a Barcelona native, food writer and senior culinary attaché at Bon Vivant Communications, a firm that manages chefs and high-end restaurants around the world. “Having said that, I will not deny that tourism has grown enormously in recent years, that we lack an adequate model because no government has been interested in developing one seriously and that some areas are very overcrowded.” During my trip, checklist destinations like La Rambla and Sagrada Família were packed, despite grey, wet and unpredictable weather. At one restaurant, I watched as a waiter – with the patience of a saint – repeatedly turned away diners who had ignored a “reservations only” sign and barged in to ask for a table, always in English. At Park Güell, confused visitors, unaware they needed to book tickets online , met with exasperated workers. There, I overheard one staff member exclaim to a Spanish-speaking couple: “What a miracle to hear people speaking Spanish in this place!” Cruise ships and short-term lets are under scrutiny Much of the strain stems from how people visit the city. Among the biggest flashpoints are short-term rentals and cruise ship tourism. Many apartments have been converted into Airbnbs , pricing out locals and turning once-quiet streets into party zones. “Here we don’t have ‘suburbia,’” says Ann-Marie Brannigan, an Irish expat and co-founder of Runner Bean Tours who has lived in Barcelona for almost 20 years. “Some people don’t know much about neighbourhood or flat living. It took me years to get used to it.” She says that many tourists will often sit out on balconies or terraces, drinking and talking long after midnight – a taboo in Barcelona communities . “If you want to have fun and party, you should go out to zones where there are clubs,” she advises. Meanwhile, cruise ships unload thousands of day-trippers who rarely stay long enough to contribute meaningfully to the local economy. Last May, Barcelona’s mayor, Jaume Collboni, warned that the volume of short-term travellers was overwhelming popular areas and crowding public transport. “We are reaching a limit, and we need to put a cap [on one-day visitors],” he said. The cultural toll is just as concerning. Longtime residents are watching their city change as historic bars, restaurants and neighbourhood markets are rebranded to suit the tastes of a transient crowd, and chintzy shops now occupy historic buildings in El Born and the Gothic Quarter. What travellers can do differently Beyond the big-name attractions, though, a less saturated and more rewarding Barcelona still exists. The Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau offers a remarkable look at Barcelona’s modernist movement with a fraction of the crowds of Sagrada Família just down the road. Small coffee shops like Dalston and Sip pair locally roasted beans with friendly service. Less-frequented venues like the historic Mercat de Sant Antoni and pintxo favourite Quimtet & Quimtet – standing tables only – offer antidotes to overcrowded hotspots. These are the kinds of experiences experts like Luque suggest seeking out. “The great monuments – La Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, the Picasso Museum – are fabulous, but it’s worth trying to get to know other places, such as the neighbourhoods of Poble Nou or Sants, where everything is much more real,” he says. Luque recommends local markets like Mercat del Ninot and Mercat de Galvany over the packed Boqueria and encourages travellers to explore quieter corners of Eixample, “not just along and around Paseo de Gracia, which is a wonderful street but too crowded.” Dunnigan suggests places like Montjuïc and Glòries if you want to see more local – and overlooked – sides of the city. “The cemetery in Montjuïc is absolutely beautiful, and no one goes there,” she says, highlighting the Art Nouveau-style mausoleums built by the city’s bourgeois for their loved ones around the turn of the 20th century. Glòries, she adds, offers a window into the city’s modern architecture, including landmarks like the excellent Design Museum of Barcelona and Encants Market. And she encourages visiting community festivals instead of just big ones like La Mercè. “Every neighbourhood has two a year, with food and sardanas (traditional music dancing),” says Brannigan. “They’ll give you a much more local feel.” It also helps to know – and follow – local etiquette. Luque has a few suggestions. Don’t go shirtless , he says. Avoid rowdy antics in residential neighbourhoods. Drinking in the street? Not allowed. And learn a few Catalan or Spanish phrases. “A ‘gràcies’ for thank you or ‘hola’ for hello always helps and a smile opens many doors,” he says. Is Barcelona at a crossroads? At a recent summit in the city, protestor Elena Boschi made a pointed declaration to the media members in attendance: “We want tourists to have some level of fear about the situation – without fear, there is no change.” Her words underline the growing tension between a city that depends on tourism yet struggles to manage its impact – a tension that’s evident to anyone visiting the city. With protestors planning Europe-wide disruptions on 15 June – across Barcelona, Venice, Lisbon and beyond – the atmosphere is more volatile than ever. But it’s also clear that Barcelona isn’t vehemently anti-tourist. It’s simply asking for a different kind of tourist: one who comes with curiosity and listens as much as they look.",

      • "content": "French media reported that the alleged hostage-takers cut off one of the man's fingers. Police in France rescued the father of a wealthy cryptocurrency entrepreneur in a nighttime raid after he was taken hostage for ransom. It's the latest alleged criminal effort in the country to extort people involved in the management of digital assets. The man was kidnapped on Thursday morning in Paris, the prosecutor's office said on Sunday. \"The victim turned out to be the father of a man who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies, and the incident was accompanied by a ransom demand,\" its statement said, without giving their names or other specifics about their identities. Police investigators located the hostage in a house in the Essonne region south of Paris, from which he was rescued on Saturday night, the prosecutor's office said. Five suspects seized by police It said he was treated for injuries but gave no details. French media reported that the alleged hostage-takers cut off one of the man's fingers. Police detained five people - four were in or close to the house where the man was held captive, while the fifth was at the wheel of a vehicle thought to have been used for the alleged abduction, the prosecutor’s office said. It said the police investigation is looking at an array of possible criminal charges, including kidnapping \"with torture or a barbaric act\". In January, police said a co-founder of French crypto-wallet firm Ledger, David Balland, was also kidnapped with his wife from their home in the region of Cher, central France. Police said they made 10 arrests and that the alleged kidnappers demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency from another of Ledger's co-founders. A raid by France's elite National Gendarmerie Intervention Group unit that specialises in hostage situations freed Balland the next day, followed the day after that by the liberation, again by the GIGN, of his wife, found tied up in a vehicle, police said.",

      • "description": "Most Europeans support the shift to renewable energy, but translating that into support for actual projects on the ground isn’t easy.",
      • "content": "Most Europeans support the shift to renewable energy, but translating that into support for actual projects on the ground isn’t easy. Europe’s energy sector is undergoing a rapid transformation. Growth in renewable energy is breaking records, meeting a major milestone of 50 per cent of the European Union’s electricity demand last year, largely thanks to wind and solar energy. This growth is expected to continue, giving the potential for €2.5 trillion in savings on energy bills across the EU by 2040. To reach the goals the bloc has set for itself, more solar panels and wind turbines need to be deployed, and more grid infrastructure must be rolled out to keep up with the transition. But, while a majority of Europe supports the transition to green energy, there is a growing movement of those who oppose it. This opposition is slowing the uptake of renewables across the EU. “Most Europeans support this shift. Across the continent, around four in five people consistently back wind power in public opinion polls,” says Guy Willems from the WindEurope association. “But translating that support into actual infrastructure on the ground isn’t always straightforward. People are naturally protective of their surroundings. And in a world increasingly filled with disinformation, often amplified by high-profile political figures, public support for wind energy can’t be taken for granted.” Disinformation is fuelling European anti-renewables movements Sardinia , an island at the forefront of the climate crisis, is a good example of this trend. Last year, severe drought led to the island declaring a state of emergency with two of its prominent economic sectors, tourism and agriculture, heavily impacted. It has the potential to become a pioneer in renewables, but efforts to centre its energy production on coal and fossil gas have undermined this transition. Disinformation campaigns from the anti-renewables movement have labelled it an “invasion”, stating that Sardinia is “under attack” from wind and solar projects, which will cause “irreversible devastation”. Fuelled by this disinformation, local backlash prompted the Sardinian government to impose an 18-month moratorium on new wind and solar projects in July last year. It isn’t just Sardinia where this stream of disinformation is holding up renewables projects. In France, a report published in April found that media outlets were spreading disinformation with a focus on renewable energy. This included claims that it was unreliable and harmful, polluting more than fossil fuels. “The nuclear industry has a strong influence in France, as does the fossil fuel industry,” says Etienne Charbit from the French NGO réseau Cler. “They undoubtedly help to fuel the anti-renewables movement in public debate. This influence, and insufficient government support, are among the main reasons why France is lagging behind its own renewable energy targets and is reluctant to commit to the deployment of renewables at the right pace and scale.” Wind turbines? Not in my backyard In Germany, an attitude of ‘Not in my Backyard’ (NIMBY) is holding up progress on wind power expansion. In 2024, the newly installed capacity was 3.25GW - well below the expansion target of 8GW. A survey conducted by the German Economic Institute earlier this year found that, while there was a 54.7 per cent acceptance rate for the expansion of onshore wind, support for the construction of turbines decreases the closer proposals are to people’s homes. Just 40 per cent of people in areas where there are no wind turbines said they would back new projects where they live. Opposition was strongest in areas where people were already aware of current plans for new wind turbines. The survey showed noticeably higher levels of support for expansion (60 per cent) in areas where people already have wind turbines in their neighbourhood. This public resistance to new renewable energy is also being fuelled by specific political parties. The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AFD) party has called for Germany to tear down “the windmills of shame”. It is a message that resonates with their supporters, too, as just 22.8 per cent are in favour of onshore wind energy expansion. Disinformation doesn’t excuse a lack of local engagement The spread of disinformation and anti-renewables rhetoric is hampering Europe’s transition to green energy, often with ambiguous motivations. But it shouldn’t undermine the genuine concerns of the communities where these projects could potentially be constructed. “The formation of anti-renewable energy organisations can also stem from legitimate concerns, like insufficient consideration of local needs and a lack of engagement of local communities during the different phases of projects,” says Charbit. “It is therefore vital to share the benefits of these projects and to strengthen community involvement.” It is a sentiment shared by Alexandros Koutras, project manager at the Electra Energy cooperative in Greece. “Scepticism and mistrust toward energy projects have been a challenge for their long-term sustainable development. This is understandable, as many initiatives were top-down, profit-driven, and excluded local communities,” he acknowledges. “Fair community benefit-sharing breaks this pattern by addressing local needs. Inclusion comes through participation, and when locals are involved in planning, designing, decision-making, and ownership, they become ambassadors of change.” When projects like wind farms are co-owned, Koutras adds, people are more likely to take collective responsibility and tackle “bureaucratic barriers” and other challenges against them together, because they reap the rewards too. Community engagement is crucial Models of community engagement and benefit sharing for renewable energy projects can vary widely across Europe, according to a new report from Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe. From financial compensation and job creation to electricity discounts, upgrades to public services or community funds, these benefits can come in many different forms. What we do know, however, is that people need to see direct, tangible and proportionate benefits from projects being built in their neighbourhoods. “Engagement with local residents and relevant stakeholders needs to be early, accessible and continuous during the planning, development and operation of a renewable energy project,” says Seda Orhan, renewable energy programme manager at CAN Europe. Orhan adds that this effort needs to start with policies so that there is a baseline for what constitutes ‘fair’ community engagement and benefit sharing. For the first time ever, a cross-sector consensus has been reached between developers, local governments, civil society, and energy communities to define common principles for deploying renewable energy projects more efficiently and with increased community support. The Fast and Fair Renewables & Grids initiative, facilitated by ICLEI Europe (Local Governments for Sustainability), fleshes out the notion of a fair deployment of renewable energy projects, with local value creation and community benefits as one of five priority pathways. Developers have agreed on the importance of offering community benefits, such as direct funding, electricity discounts and co-ownership, where permitted by law. Business has also agreed that new projects should have an overall positive impact on nature and biodiversity, resolving a major point of conflict with environmental groups. “All sides can finally point to commonly agreed principles on what constitutes a fair way to build, hopefully avoiding the complex disputes that have stalled renewable projects for years,” says Arthur Hinsch, senior expert in sustainable energy systems at ICLEI. The shared principles also seek to empower municipal leaders and staff in rural areas, where a significant percentage of renewable projects are sited, in their roles as mediators and enablers of local energy transition. What benefits can renewable energy projects bring to communities? ACCIONA Energía, a renewable energy developer based in Spain, has recognised the advantages of ensuring that local communities are not just hosts, but active beneficiaries of sustainable development. Its initiative in Hornillos de Cerrato, a municipality in Palencia, Spain, embodies this approach. Traditionally reliant on agriculture, it faced many of the same challenges seen in other rural areas, like declining populations and limited services. ACCIONIA saw the potential for positive change. Working closely with local stakeholders, the developer integrated wind energy into the community in a way that complemented the town’s economic, cultural and environmental fabric. The installation of 40 wind turbines, including the Celada Fusión wind farm, marked a turning point for Hornillos de Cerrato. Beyond supplying renewable energy to approximately 40,000 homes, the project generated significant benefits. The town's population grew from 110 in 2015 to 175 in 2023, reversing a long-standing decline. Revenue from the wind farms funded essential services such as a subsidised taxi service for the elderly, improved internet connectivity, and the construction of recreational facilities. “Fair community benefit-sharing is pivotal in garnering public support and expediting permitting processes for renewable energy projects,” says Emma Reiners, director of communications at ACCIONA. “Our experience in Hornillos de Cerrato underscores that when communities are integral to renewable energy projects, the outcomes transcend electricity generation - they rejuvenate communities, foster economic growth, and build lasting partnerships.” Belgium’s SeaCoop is another successful example of involving communities in energy projects. It brought together 34 Belgian renewable energy communities to allow people to invest in offshore wind and harvest the energy for their own use. In February this year, Seacoop was able to acquire 7 per cent of the Northwind wind farm. The revenue generated by this investment will be used to help citizens participate in the energy transition through heat pumps, renovations, electric car sharing and reducing energy poverty by bringing down their bills. Philippe Awouters, managing director of SeaCoop, sees this as an important role for energy communities . “Direct citizen ownership of renewable energy projects is an essential safeguard to garner social acceptance and accelerate the transition,” he says. “In short: Power2thepeople via mill, baby, mill!”",

• "content": "A utopia of massive tapestries, killer clown slashers, and the sexy exploits of the world's first celebrity chef — here's what to look out for this week. Spring is in full swing and there's lots to look forward to this week. With Cannes Film Festival and Eurovision on the horizon, the month of May marks a turning point in the European cultural calendar as communal events ramp up and festivals celebrate the best in music, food, film and art. This week's highlights include a powerful immersive exhibition by Czech artist Klára Hosnedlová in Berlin, a literary festival in Stratford-upon-Avon and a new entry into the killer clown cinematic universe. Over on the small screen, there's the hunger-inducing (and very horny) new French drama Carême , along with the return of Ryan Johnson's Emmy-winning 'whodunnit' Poker Face. For a more in-depth look at some of these things, along with our thoughts on Marvel's Thunderbolts* and Jon Hamm's new series 'Your Friends & Neighbors' — hit play on the video above. Exhibitions Klára Hosnedlová: Embrace Where: Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin, Germany) When: Until 26 October 2025 Artist Klára Hosnedlová is known for her large-scale immersive installations that imagine future utopias. Her latest work for the CHANEL Commission is her most ambitious yet: a collection of massive tapestries that fill the 2,500-square-metre hall of Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof. Drawing inspiration from her cultural background, everything is textured with nature and folklore, including audio and video recordings that conjure memories of Hosnedlová’s home near the Czech-Slovakian border. Find out more here . Grayson Perry: Delusions of Grandeur Where: The Wallace Collection (London, UK) When: Until 26 October 2025 Legendary British artist Grayson Perry explores the fantasy and catharsis of craft at the Wallace Collection's largest contemporary exhibition to date. From dynamic digital creations to multi-dimensional ceramics, there are over 40 new works for fans to appreciate — alongside 'outsider art' inspirations by the likes of Madge Gill and Aloïse Corbaz. Gill, who exhibited at the Wallace Collection in 1942, is the exhibition's central muse; her life the basis from which Perry's vibrant ideas flourish in explorations of identity, mental health, and the obsessive need to create. Events Stratford Literary Festival Where: Stratford-upon-Avon, UK When: 8 May - 11 May 2025 What better place for a literary festival than Shakespeare’s birthplace ? Founded in 2008, Stratford’s event has become one of the UK’s most significant celebrations of reading, writing and learning. This year's programme includes an exciting line-up of diverse and insightful speakers, such as Mishal Husain, Dame Jacqueline Wilson, John Boyne, Rita Chakrabarti and Alison Steadman. There are also workshops on everything from crafting paper flowers to tracing family history through artefacts. If you’re looking to feel inspired and re-connect with others, this is the place to be. Movies Clown in a Cornfield Where: UK cinemas When: 9 May 2025 This film has been getting a lot of hype amongst horror fans since its premiere at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in March. Based on the 2020 novel by Adam Cesare, it tells the story of Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas), a young girl who moves to the sleepy town of Kettle Springs with her dad after the death of her mother. She quickly realises, however, that her new home is not as it seems; its older inhabitants stubbornly stuck in the past with backwards values. But worst of all? There’s a menacing clown named Frendo lurking in the cornfields. Cue a gruesome slasher flick that utilises a figure of nostalgia to exert cross-generational rage. Television Carême Where: Apple TV+ When: Streaming now Apple’s new French-language series serves us sex, soufflé and spies through the lens of Napoleonic Paris’ pastry maestro: Marie-Antoine Carême (known as Antonin Carême). Widely considered the world’s ‘first celebrity chef’, Carême was foundational to France’s haute cuisine scene, sculpting ever-more elaborate and innovative sweet treats like the croquembouche. But he was also involved in espionage, orgies and all the hedonistic hubbub of the time period, making way for a character-driven show that’s lavishly layered and deliciously dramatic. Find out more here . Poker Face Where: Peacock / Sky When: 8th May Natasha Lyonne is back on fantastically feisty form as walking lie detector Charlie Cale, with Ryan Johnson's contemporary take on Columbo finally returning. The first season saw Charlie hit the road after being framed for murder, meeting various characters along the way whose fibs are unravelled into an anthology of compelling whodunnits. Joining Lyonne this time is a stacked ensemble cast that includes Awkwafina ( Crazy Rich Asians ), Cynthia Erivo ( Wicked ) and Haley Joel Osment ( Blink Twice ). Music Arcade Fire: Pink Elephant When: 9 May 2025 Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire return with their seventh studio album, which follows 2022’s ‘We’. Described as \"cinematic, mystical punk\", its title refers to the paradoxical ‘pink elephant theory’ that suggests the more you try to avoid a thought, the more prominent it becomes in your mind. This, along with the melancholic lead single, set the tone for a soundscape swollen with introspection and altered perception. It's also the band’s first output since lead singer Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, which he has publicly denied.",

      • "content": "A new study shows that most employees use artificial intelligence (AI) regularly but admit they don’t fact-check its results before using it at work. A vast majority of people use artificial intelligence (AI) every day, even though they don't trust it's outputs, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia and global consulting firm KPMG surveyed over 48,000 people in 47 countries from November to January 2025 about their trust, uses, and attitudes towards AI. The study found that while over two-thirds of their respondents use AI with some regularity, either at work, for school, or in their personal time, only 46 percent are willing to trust these systems. The participants were asked to rank how much they trusted the technical ability of AI systems and the safety, security, and ethical soundness of the systems. Researchers then rated their responses on a nine-point scale to determine how much each recipient trusted the AI. \"Trust is sort of the strongest predictor of AI’s acceptance,\" Samantha Gloede, managing director at KPMG, told Euronews Next. \"We don’t think any organisation can move faster than the speed of trust\". What people are struggling to believe in is the AI’s ability to be fair and do no harm, according to the study authors. Where people have more faith is in the technical ability of AI to provide accurate and reliable output and services. 'Taking it into their own hands' The study also found that 58 per cent of their respondents are using AI regularly at work with 33 per cent of these respondents using it weekly or daily in their jobs. These employees say it makes them more efficient, gives them greater access to information, and lets them be more innovative. In almost half of the cases, the respondents noted that AI has increased revenue-generating activity. There’s added risk, though, for companies whose employees do use AI at work, because half of the respondents who use chatbots at work say they use them despite violating company policies. \"People feel almost pressured that if they don’t use it, they will be... set behind their competitors,\" Gloede said. Gloede said they heard examples where employees admitted to uploading sensitive company information into free public tools like ChatGPT or that deepfakes were being made of senior leadership, which could damage their reputation or that of the company. Employees have also presented the work of AI chatbots as their own, with 57 per cent saying they’ve hidden the fact that they’ve used AI in their work. These employees have also done so without necessarily evaluating the accuracy of the content that the AI generated for them. Another 56 per cent report making mistakes in their work due to their use of AI without subsequent fact-checking, the report continues. \"For organisations that don’t have an AI literacy study in place ... [employees] are taking things into their own hands,\" she said. 'We have so much to gain' The study also found that half of the employees surveyed for this study didn't understand AI and how it's used. Furthermore, only two out of five employees reported getting any AI-related training or education about how to use it. One example of what companies could do to teach their employees about how to use AI is to create a \"trusted AI framework,\" Gloede said, that includes 10 different principles that should be considered when using the technology in their work. She said she’s hoping that the survey findings will encourage C-suite executives, tech companies, and public policy makers to take action. \"We have so much to gain from [AI] if it is executed by organisations, by governments, in a responsible way,\" she said.",

      • "content": "Greenland has been caught in the disinformation crossfire as geopolitical tensions between world powers rise. Moscow was behind a disinformation campaign alleging that a Danish lawmaker had sought Russian assistance amid Trump's threats to annex Greenland, Denmark's security services have said. The fake news operation first surfaced in January, when Donald Trump ramped up threats to seize control of Greenland, an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark. The US President alleged Denmark should cede the island to the US to \"protect the free world\" and threatened economic sanctions if it didn't, heightening tensions between Washington and Copenhagen and casting doubt over the integrity of the NATO Alliance. The Danish Defence Intelligence Service (FE) has now accused the Kremlin of using their disinformation operations to sow further division. Posts circulating on social media – and amplified by bots – claimed that Karsten Hønge, a Danish left-wing lawmaker, had asked Moscow to provide assistance to Denmark in order to prevent the US from annexing Greenland. They included a doctored Facebook post allegedly published by Hønge, that said: \"In a situation of extreme escalation and tension, we have to take extreme measures and ask for help from Russia to solve this problem.\" The fabricated post adds that it's certain the request \"will be heard\" because the prospect of Greenland becoming part of the US is \"as unfavourable\" to Russia as it is to Denmark. Hønge responded by firmly denouncing the claims as fake news. Copenhagen accuses Moscow of sowing division The Danish Defence Intelligence Service said that the fake post was first published by an \"an influencer who has previously promoted Russia's agenda in Ukraine.\" With support from the French anti-disinformation agency, Viginum, they identified the influencer as a known actor who is part of a Moscow-backed operation. \"The influence operation should be seen as part of the ongoing influence in which Russia is trying to create discord in the transatlantic relationship and undermine Western support for Ukraine,\" the FE said, adding that the disinformation was also attended to sway the result of Greenland's March general election. Greenlandic non-profit organisations are warning that the island is getting caught in the disinformation cross-fire as geopolitical tensions boil and that it is unprepared for facing these hybrid threats. Last December, a study found evidence of \"hostile foreign actors\" operating in Greenlandic Facebook forums, with the recent rapid advance of AI allowing actors to generate \"convincing Greenlandic texts.\" Experts warn the territory is vulnerable to such campaigns due to its limited media landscape and the influence of social networks such as Facebook. \"Greenland's media landscape is small and resource-constrained. Unlike larger countries, where media organisations have dedicated teams for investigative journalism and fact-checking, Greenland's newsrooms operate on minimal staff and funding,\" researcher Signe Ravn-Højgaard of the University of Greenland, recently said .",

• "content": "( MENAFN ) The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to conduct a private meeting to deliberate on the growing hostility between India and Pakistan, a situation that has worsened following the April 22 terrorist assault in Kashmir. The session, planned for Monday, has been arranged by the Greek leadership of the council in reaction to a formal appeal from Islamabad, based on multiple reports. Greek Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris commented earlier, “This is a position of principle. We condemn terrorism in all its forms, everywhere it is happening. On the other hand, we are concerned about this tension which is mounting in the region.” His remarks underscore Greece’s commitment to opposing terrorism universally, while also acknowledging alarm over the escalating discord in South Asia. The UNSC is made up of 15 members, including five permanent members with veto rights: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The remaining ten are non-permanent participants, among them Pakistan. Greece currently holds the rotating presidency of the council for the month of May. On Sunday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would brief the UN on current developments in the region. This update will include the consequences of the Kashmir attack and India’s move to halt the Indus Waters Treaty. The ministry emphasized, “This important diplomatic move is part of Pakistan's efforts to present accurate facts to the international community,” aiming to ensure global actors are properly informed. Pakistan began its stint as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on January 1, 2025. In retaliation to the April incident in Jammu and Kashmir, India took a series of measures: it froze the pivotal Indus Waters Treaty, expelled Pakistani diplomatic staff, shut its border crossings, and revoked most visas issued to Pakistani nationals—demanding they exit Indian territory within a matter of days. • "content": "( MENAFN - IANS) Liverpool, May 5 (IANS) After a month of speculation, Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed he will not extend his contract and leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Although a new club has not been announced, Real Madrid's long-time admiration of the wingback has been one of the worst-kept secrets in football and it is expected that the announcement will follow in the coming days. Announcing his decision through a video on social media, Trent revealed that this is the \"hardest decision\" he has ever made in his life. “After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I've ever made in my life. “I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven't spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team's best interests, which was securing No.20,\" read the post on social media. Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool's Academy at the age of six and progressed through the ranks at youth level before making his senior debut in 2016. He has gone on to make 352 appearances for the Reds to date, scoring 23 goals and lifting eight major honours, including this season's Premier League title. “This club has been my whole life – my whole world - for 20 years. From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all. “But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally,” added Trent. This will bring his two-decade-long association with the Reds to an end having made the decision to depart Anfield once his deal ceases on June 30, 2025. \"I've given my all every single day I've been at this club, and I hope you feel like I've given back to you during my time here. From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody – my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters - for the last 20 years. “I've been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I've been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all. • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization) The Republic of Congo and its gas agenda will be at the forefront of the upcoming Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2025 Forum in Paris, which will feature a dedicated session on Monetizing Congo's Gas Opportunities. The strategic discussion comes as Congo works to scale up gas production, build critical infrastructure and accelerate monetization efforts to meet domestic demand and strengthen its position as a regional energy exporter. The session will be moderated by Géraud Moussarie, Managing Partner at Sustainable Partnerships, and will bring together leading voices in the sector. Featured panelists include senior representatives from Congo's national oil company, Société nationale des pétroles du Congo (SNPC); Rus Jiri, Sales and Development Director Africa at Neuman & Esser; and Oumar Semega, CEO of Imperatus Energy. IAE 2025 (apo-opa/43ffoPN ) is an exclusive forum designed to facilitate investment between African energy markets and global investors. Taking place May 13-14, 2025 in Paris, the event offers delegates two days of intensive engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers. For more information, please visit To sponsor or participate as a delegate, please contact ... . Congo's gas sector has made significant strides in recent years, with new frameworks and ambitious infrastructure projects underway. The Congo LNG project, led by Eni, aims to position the Republic of Congo as a key LNG exporter, with a total liquefaction capacity of up to 3 million tons per year through two floating LNG units – the first of which delivered its maiden cargo in February 2024. Equally critical is the monetization and domestic utilization of refined gas products. The Banga Kayo onshore project, led by Wing Wah, is set to play a central role by transforming previously flared gas into dry gas, LNG, LPG and polypropylene for use in the local market. Meanwhile, a new Gas Code, expected in 2025, along with the recently adopted Gas Master Plan, are laying the groundwork for sustainable sector growth by establishing clear incentives for investors, streamlining regulatory processes and promoting the development of gas infrastructure and local value chains. Across Africa, monetizing natural gas is increasingly seen as both an economic necessity and a catalyst for development – supporting energy access, powering industrial growth and enabling a shift toward cleaner energy sources. To date, key challenges include limited processing and transport infrastructure, constrained financing and fragmented regional markets, which continue to slow progress. Overcoming these hurdles requires coordinated policies, targeted infrastructure investment and cross-border partnerships. IAE 2025 provides a vital platform for public and private sector leaders to address these issues, promote investment and unlock the full potential of Africa's gas value chain. • "content": "( MENAFN - ForPressRelease)London, UK – On 2 May 2025, the Reform Club in Pall Mall welcomed an international gathering of more than 120 senior policymakers, diplomats, business leaders, and investment experts for a special gala dinner marking the release of two key reports: Bridging Borders: Trade Promotion and Foreign Direct Investment and Global Economic Opportunities 2025. Under the stewardship of Dr. Khalifa Saif Juma Saif Al Mehairbi, Chairman & Patron of the Global Economic Business Council, the evening stressed how sustained dialogue, coordinated policy, and open markets reinforce global economic resilience and counter rising protectionism. Opening Remarks by Baroness Prashar The Rt Hon. The Baroness Prashar CBE set the tone for the evening, noting that“in our deeply interconnected world, policies that engage every stakeholder-from small exporters to multinational investors-are essential to shared prosperity.” With decades of experience in public service, she underscored the importance of inclusive consultations and transparent governance to ensure that trade and investment benefits are equitably distributed. Sven Jurgenson on Multilateral Foundations Following her, H.E. Sven Jurgenson, former President of the United Nations Security Council and ex-UNICEF Board Chair, delivered a keynote reflecting on the post–World War II multilateral trade architecture. He warned against the dangers of fragmentation:“When nations withdraw from collective frameworks, the very networks that drive innovation and uplift communities begin to unravel.” His address called for recommitment to global institutions and collaborative platforms. Dr. Al Mehairbi's Vision and Reports Dr. Khalifa Saif Juma Saif Al Mehairbi then introduced the night's two flagship publications and outlined their significance: .Bridging Borders compiles institutional best practices into a hands-on manual for export-promotion and investment-promotion agencies. Covering governance design, stakeholder engagement, digital transformation, and performance tracking, it equips practitioners with the tools to streamline operations, build capacity, and foster cross-border partnerships. .Global Economic Opportunities 2025 presents a curated pipeline of over USD 6 billion in foreign direct investment projects across 63 countries, from sustainable energy initiatives in Asia to infrastructure ventures in Africa. Each project profile includes financing structures, impact metrics, and contact points, enabling investors and agencies to fast-track high-impact collaborations. “We equip policymakers and private-sector partners with the intelligence needed to forge enduring alliances and guard against protectionist backsliding,” Dr. Al Mehairbi said.“Through shared data and unified strategies, we can turn potential into progress, ensuring no community is left behind.” Honors and Awards Immediately after his presentation, Dr. Al Mehairbi was honored by H.E. Sven Jurgenson with two awards: 1.Champion of International Trade, recognizing his leadership in creating public–private platforms that reduce barriers and boost export competitiveness. 2.Global Best Real Estate Person of the Year, celebrating his orchestration of landmark FDI projects that drive sustainable development and create jobs. Closing Call to Action The evening concluded with remarks from The Hon. David Wells, Canadian Senator and Chairman of the International Centre for Trade Transparency. He urged all attendees to transform the insights from both reports into action plans, leverage digital collaboration tools, and maintain regular multilateral dialogues. “Open markets and robust dialogue are not static achievements but ongoing commitments,” Senator Wells emphasized.“These publications give us the blueprint. Our task now is to implement, iterate, and collaborate continuously to secure inclusive, long-term growth.” Media Contact: Nina Escarda International Trade Council ... +1 (914) 301-7040 About the International Trade Council The International Trade Council is the foremost global chamber of commerce dedicated to cross-border trade and investment facilitation. • "content": "( MENAFN - PR Newswire) A new offering brings an enterprise-grade digital employee experience to modern businesses of all sizes, with real-time visibility, automation, and zero disruption. GÖPPINGEN, Germany, May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamViewer, a global leader in digital workplace solutions, today announced the upcoming launch of TeamViewer DEX Essentials-a new offering designed to bring digital employee experience (DEX) capabilities to its entire customer base, including small and medium-sized businesses, for the first time. DEX platforms have traditionally been tailored to meet the scale and demands of large enterprises managing thousands of employees and devices. With DEX Essentials, TeamViewer is extending those powerful capabilities to its existing customer base, especially to smaller, fast-moving businesses, delivering an out-of-the-box, easy-to-deploy solution that helps IT teams proactively manage and optimize the digital workplace at any scale. \"A smooth digital experience is fundamental to how people work today - but it shouldn't be exclusive to the largest enterprises,\" said Mei Dent, Chief Product and Technology Officer at TeamViewer. \"With TeamViewer DEX Essentials, we're putting real-time visibility, automated remediation, and smart insights into the hands of every IT team. It's a major step forward in our vision to make superior workplace technology seamless and accessible for all. The product is currently available through an early access program and will become commercially available later this month. Early feedback from customers has been very promising and shows that the combination of remote connectivity and DEX technology truly resonates, helping IT teams make operations more seamless and efficient.\" TeamViewer DEX Essentials gives IT teams the tools to: Prevent downtime by resolving performance, app, operating system, and network issues before users notice; Automate routine fixes to reduce ticket volumes and free up IT for strategic work; Ensure stability and security across devices without interrupting productivity; Gain actionable insights to improve compliance, user experience, and system health. This launch marks a major milestone following TeamViewer's acquisition of 1E, extending its DEX leadership beyond enterprise and delivering on its promise to simplify enterprise-grade innovation for everyone. Seamlessly integrated into the TeamViewer remote connectivity platform, TeamViewer DEX Essentials offers a familiar experience with powerful new capabilities - built on proven technology from 1E and tailored for lean IT environments. TeamViewer DEX Essentials will be available as an add-on to TeamViewer Remote and Tensor.
