      • "content": "SEOUL: South Korea's former labor minister Kim Moon-soo was reinstated Saturday (May 10) as his conservative party's presidential candidate - the same day it revoked his nomination and attempted to replace him with a former prime minister . The People Power Party (PPP) has been in turmoil since its former president Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted after he declared martial law in December. Last week, Kim won the PPP's primary to run as its candidate in presidential elections on June 3. But before dawn Saturday, his nomination was cancelled, and the party said it was instead nominating career bureaucrat Han Duck-soo, 75, an ex-acting president who resigned last week to launch a presidential bid, initially as an independent. Han, also a former prime minister, and Kim had been in talks to merge their candidacies and unify the conservative base, to avoid an opposition landslide at the election, but those negotiations collapsed. Kim, 73, called the party's decision to cancel his candidacy a \"political coup\" and illegal. He then filed a court injunction to suspend the move which the Seoul Southern District Court held a roughly one-hour hearing to review. Late Saturday, the party announced that its members voted to reject the candidate switch, automatically reinstating Kim as the nominee. Kim's official registration is \"set to take place tomorrow\" with the National Election Commission, the party's interim leader Kwon Young-se said. Kwon said he will resign over his failure to unite conservatives behind a single candidate. Han, who officially joined the PPP on Saturday, said he humbly accepts the decision by \"the people and party members\". Kim thanked the party members and citizens, vowing to \"move forward to build a new and greater Republic of Korea\", adding \"everything will return to its rightful place\". SHATTERED INTERNAL DEMOCRACY The PPP's about-face came amid fears that not having a unified candidate could further weaken their chances in the election, as liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung widens his lead. But the last-minute shakeup proved controversial even within the PPP, with primary contenders criticising the leadership - one saying such a move would be unusual even in North Korea, and another calling on Han and ex-president Yoon to leave the party. Lee's Democratic Party had also gloated over the PPP's reversal, saying that after being responsible for Yoon's martial law, the party has now \"shattered internal democracy - leaving no justification for its continued existence\". Han has held a range of roles under both liberal and conservative administrations, including finance minister and ambassador to the United States. But as a former prime minister under Yoon, he has faced criticism for failing to prevent, and alleged complicity with, Yoon's martial law declaration. Kim shot to public attention as the only cabinet member who refused to bow in apology for failing to prevent Yoon's attempted suspension of civilian rule and for opposing his impeachment. Kim, also a former three-term lawmaker, spent around two decades as a labour and pro-democracy activist fighting military authoritarian regimes - including serving a jail term - but later said he shifted his views following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A National Barometer Survey released this week showed Lee - who currently faces multiple criminal trials - leading Kim 43 per cent to 29 per cent. In a separate match-up scenario, Lee held a 44 per cent to 34 per cent advantage over Han.",

      • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday (May 10) after US pressure and diplomacy, announcing a sudden stop to a conflict that had seemed to be spiralling alarmingly. But within hours, violations were reported from the main cities of Indian Kashmir, the territory that had borne the brunt of four days of fighting. Blasts were heard in Srinagar and Jammu . Projectiles and flashes were seen in the night sky over Jammu, similar to the events of the previous evening, according to authorities, residents and Reuters witnesses. Military spokespeople in both countries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The fighting had been the worst between the old South Asian enemies in nearly three decades and threatened to erupt into a full-scale war in one of the world's most volatile and densely populated regions. There were brief fears that nuclear arsenals might come into play as Pakistan's military said a top body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet. But the defence minister said no such meeting was scheduled, hours after a night of heavy fighting in which the two countries targeted each other’s military bases and the combined civilian death toll rose to 66. \"Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect,\" Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar posted on X. \"Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!\" The Indian foreign secretary said the two countries' military chiefs had spoken to each other and agreed that all fighting would stop at 5pm Indian time (1130 GMT), without using the word \"ceasefire\". US President Donald Trump posted: \"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.\" HOTLINES AND DIPLOMACY Dar told the broadcaster Geo News that military channels and hotlines between India and Pakistan had been activated, and three dozen countries had helped to facilitate the agreement. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, India's top diplomat, said the two military chiefs would speak to each other again on May 12. On Wednesday, India had attacked what it said was \"terrorist infrastructure\" in Pakistani Kashmir and Pakistan, two weeks after 26 people were killed in an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir. Pakistan denied India's accusations that it was involved in the attack. Days of cross-border fire, shelling and drone and missile attacks followed. Despite the truce, two Indian government sources told Reuters that the punitive measures announced by India and reciprocated by Pakistan, such as trade suspension and visa cancellations, would remain in place for now. The sources also said the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing pact that India suspended after the Kashmir attack, would remain in abeyance. The Indian foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir, and the two national security advisors over the course of 48 hours. TALKS TO FOLLOW AT NEUTRAL VENUE In a post on X, Rubio commended Modi and Sharif on the agreement, which he said included not only an immediate ceasefire but also the start of talks on \"a broad set of issues at a neutral site”. Jaishankar said India had consistently maintained a firm and \"uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations\" and would continue to do so. News of the ceasefire was greeted with relief on both sides of the border, and Pakistan's airports authority said its airspace had been fully reopened. Omar Abdullah, chief minister of Indian Kashmir, which bore the brunt of the fighting, welcomed the truce but added: \"If it had happened 2-3 days ago, the lives we lost would not have been lost.\" Pakistani news channels showed tanks returning from the border. \"Both Pakistan and India need to lift their large populations on virtually every measure of socio-economic development,\" said Ehsan Malik, CEO of the Pakistan Business Council. \"We are happy that a ceasefire will help both the governments to focus on this priority.\" Shuja Nawaz, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council's South Asia Center, said the Indus treaty would figure prominently in the impending talks \"after a decent interval, which allows both governments to claim credit for what they've achieved until now\". India and Pakistan have been locked in a dispute over Kashmir ever since they were born at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan both rule part of Kashmir but claim it in full. They have gone to war three times, including twice over Kashmir, alongside numerous smaller outbreaks of fighting. India blames Pakistan for an insurgency in its part of Kashmir that began in 1989 and has killed tens of thousands. It also blames Pakistani Islamist militant groups for attacks elsewhere in India. Pakistan rejects both charges. It says it only provides moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri separatists.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Tampines industrial building that was engulfed in flames has suffered fire damage and will be closed off as a precautionary measure, said the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) late on Saturday (May 10) in response to CNA's queries. While a BCA spokesperson said the building, which caught fire on Friday, \"remains structurally safe\", an inspection indicated damage to parts of the reinforced concrete structures and the steel roof of the two-storey building located at 18 Tampines Street 92. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) completed its damping down operations - applying water to burnt surfaces to halt any rekindling of fire - on Saturday morning. This enabled BCA engineers to gain entry and conduct a detailed site inspection. SCDF had also said in earlier Facebook updates that the building had three floors. The BCA spokesperson noted that the roof trusses showed signs of deformation from prolonged heat exposure, and that there was spalling observed on several columns and slabs. \"Despite these signs of fire damage, there was no significant structural deformation to the reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns, hence the building remains structurally safe.\" The building's guardhouse, carpark shelter and neighbouring unit were not affected by the fire, added the spokesperson. BCA said it will issue an order to the building's owner to close off the whole building, excluding the guardhouse and carpark shelter, as a \"precautionary measure\". \"The building owner has also been instructed to appoint a professional engineer to carry out a detailed investigation into the structural condition, recommend immediate safety measures to mitigate risks, and propose permanent rectification works,\" added the spokesperson. DARK PLUMES OF SMOKE AND ASH The fire had sent dark plumes of smoke and ash into the sky, and sparked evacuations from nearby workplaces and a school on Friday. SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at 12.50pm that day and that the fire involved textile items. It deployed five water jets, an aerial monitor from a combined platform ladder and two unmanned firefighting machines. \"A person from the affected premises was assessed by an SCDF paramedic for a minor cut on his arm. The person declined to be sent to the hospital,\" it said in a Facebook update on Friday. A photo on SCDF's Facebook page showed smoke billowing out of the windows of TC Homeplus, a company which distributes homeware and homelinen. Other videos and photos show thick black smoke rising from the location, which is near SAFRA Tampines and not far from Tampines Mall.",

      • "content": "LONDON : Fulham's hopes of European football next season are fading fast after they slipped to a fourth Premier League defeat in five games with a 3-1 loss to Everton at Craven Cottage on Saturday as the visitors came from behind to win. Fulham stay 11th in the table with 51 points from their 36 games, four points behind eighth-placed Brentford, while Everton climb one spot to 13th with 42. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham a deserved lead in the first half with a powerful header before Vitaliy Mykolenko’s deflected shot from the edge of the box levelled the score on the stroke of halftime. Two goals in three minutes from Michael Keane and Beto, who profited from an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, turned the game in Everton's favour and dealt their host's European dreams a heavy blow. The hosts took the lead with Jimenez's first goal in eight games as Emile Smith Rowe crossed from the left and the striker rose above Mykolenko to head past keeper Jordan Pickford. Harry Wilson flashed a shot just wide for Fulham, while at the other end Jack Harrison fired straight at Leno with a good chance from the edge of the area. Wilson forced another good save from Pickford low to his left, but Everton drew level on the stroke of halftime. Leno's punch from a corner was weak and Mykolenko's shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off Andreas Pereira and flew into the net. The visitors went ahead after 70 minutes when Dwight McNeil’s deep corner was headed home at the back post by Keane. Leno’s howler then allowed Everton to score a third three minutes later. Carlos Alcaraz led a quick counter-attack for the away side and after he slipped a pass to Beto, the striker’s first-time shot was tame but went through Leno's hands. Fulham then had a penalty appeal waved away in the dying seconds for a Mykolenko handball. Referee Darren England was called over to the pitch-side screen but stuck with his original decision.",

      • "content": "MADRID : This weekend's 'El Clasico' will go a long way to deciding the destination of LaLiga and Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid side will need to play a complete game to defeat league leaders Barcelona, the Italian said on Saturday. Real have a four-point gap to make up with four games remaining if they are to retain the title and for Ancelotti they will need to get everything right to have a chance on Sunday. \"In this type of game you have to do things well. Barcelona are used to keeping the opponent in their own area, but no team is perfect,\" he said. \"It's a game where there's a lot at stake and to win you have to manage everything well, defend well, attack well. We have to play a complete game.\" With so much at stake against their great rivals, Ancelotti will have little trouble getting his players fired up. \"It's not difficult to motivate the players because it's the type of match for which the players already come out motivated and with a lot of confidence,\" he said. \"Playing with Barcelona is special. It will be the last 'El Clasico' of the season because Barca are not in the Club World Cup. The speculation surrounding Ancelotti's future has only increased with the news that former Real player Xabi Alonso will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season but, whatever happens, Real Madrid will remain dear to the Italian. \"What happens around us has not affected us at all,\" he said before adding: \"With this club the honeymoon does not end. \"Real Madrid and AC Milan before it are clubs that stay in my heart because of the time I've been here and because of the relationships. The honeymoon with Madrid is going to be until the last day of my life. \"I have read that he (Alonso) is leaving Bayer Leverkusen. He has done an incredible job and has the doors open because he has proven to be one of the best in the world.\" Real have lost all three previous games against Barcelona in this campaign, including the recent Copa del Rey final, and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage against Arsenal having won the competition last season. However, Ancelotti still regards this term as a decent campaign. \"It's been a good league and a good season,\" he said. \"You need continuity to be able to win it, or to be close explains very well what tomorrow's game is going to be. We both have a lot at stake. Barca will have more chances than us, but if we win it will still be all to play for.",

      • "content": "TIRANA :Welshman Joshua Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers) set a time-trial pace even race favourite Primoz Roglic, could not match to win stage two of the Giro d'Italia by one second on Saturday. Tarling secured his first Grand Tour stage victory after the 21-year-old Briton had a nervous wait to see Roglic come so close, but the Slovenian had to settle for second place with the consolation of taking over the leader's pink jersey. Australian Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) had set the early pace but came in third, three second behind Tarling in the short 13.7km individual time-trial in Tirana. \"To win today is definitely exceptional,\" Tarling said. Vine crashed on Friday's opening stage, but took the lead from Italian Edoardo Affini, before Tarling showed his time-trial prowess. Tarling came third in the 2023 world road time-trial and, racing his first Giro, had to sit and watch as the main contenders attempted to steal the win. \"Waiting for the other riders to complete the course was hard too, I don't want to do it again,\" Tarling said. \"It was long. I was afraid of everyone among the favourites.\" All eyes were on 2023 winner Roglic, and with reigning champion Tadej Pogacar deciding to focus on the Tour de France, the 35-year-old Slovenian is expected to become the oldest ever Giro winner. Roglic, however, fell short, and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was well off the pace early in his ride. Van Aert beat Tarling to the bronze medal at last year's Olympic Games. Opening stage winner Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was last to go and despite pushing hard to the end, the Dane finished 12 seconds down in seventh place and lost the overall lead to Roglic by one second. Tarling, racing only his second Grand Tour having failed to finish last year's Vuelta A Espana, became the youngest rider to win a Giro time-trial. Sunday's stage three is the last time the riders will tackle the Albanian roads in this year's Giro, with a 160km ride that starts and finishes in Vlore.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Lion City Sailors on Saturday (May 10) evening lifted the 2024-25 Singapore Premier League (SPL) title with two games remaining after Maxime Lestienne bagged the winner at bottom side Tanjong Pagar. The Sailors came into the game knowing that a victory would seal their second league title under owner Forrest Li , the billionaire founder of tech giant Sea and the new Football Association of Singapore president . A first-half penalty by Belgian winger Lestienne settled any nerves early and the Sailors saw out the rest of the game for a 1-0 win with a tally of 71 points , ensuring that they cannot be caught by second-placed Tampines Rovers, who trail by eight points, this season. The team, who had finished runners-up in the past two SPL seasons to Albirex Niigata, celebrated in front of the away fans at Jurong East Stadium with chants of \"Campeones, ole, ole ole\" in a video posted on their Facebook account. With the SPL title in tow, attention now turns to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Two final against Sharjah FC of the United Arab Emirates on May 18, where the Sailors have the opportunity to seal a historic double by becoming the first Singaporean club to win the continental competition. The continent's football body has granted the Sailors provisional approval to stage the game at Bishan Stadium and the club has said that works are ongoing to increase its capacity to 10,000 spectators. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Sailors confirmed that tickets to the final were sold out, just one day after they had gone on sale. The Sailors made history on Apr 16 after beating Australian side Sydney FC 2-1 on aggregate to become the first Singaporean football team to reach the final of a continental competition. The Sailors, as the newly-crowned SPL winners, have again qualified for next season's AFC Champions League Two tournament.",

      • "content": "Napoli go into the final three games of the season as Serie A leaders, and for their fans and manager that is the only focus for now, Antonio Conte said on Saturday. Conte's side have a three-point lead over Inter Milan, but even after a season which has exceeded all expectations at Napoli, there is constant media speculation over whether the coach will remain at the club next season. At a press conference before Sunday's home game with Genoa, when Conte was asked if the Napoli fans were asking him questions about his future, his response included the words of a famous Italian song. \"Trust me, the fans in this moment don't ask me this question,\" Conte said with a smile. \"The fans, apart from thanking me, they ask if we will win. And I answer that we will certainly try, as we are doing. This is their only question. \"The rest? It's boredom, Franco Califano, 'Everything else is boredom'.\" Napoli will kick off against Genoa knowing Inter's result away to Torino. \"Regardless, there will be pressure, we have to be good at directing it in a positive manner, as long as it is a help to remain concentrated, have desire and motivation,\" Conte said. \"I think the final two games we will play at the same time, and that will be even better. \"Playing first, playing later, we know that nothing will change, we have to think about our game.\" Conte also gave an update on the injury situation. \"(Stanislav) Lobotka returned to the group yesterday, he trained again today, there is still a fitness test tomorrow morning to make the best decision,\" Conte said. \"(David) Neres was back training partially yesterday, I think he can be called up for the bench, also to savour the atmosphere again. \"(Alessandro) Buongiorno is still at a standstill and Juan Jesus, who is dying to return, he says he is ready but the doctors are holding him back.\" The manager was asked what has been most important for is Napoli side. \"It all depends and starts from the head,\" Conte replied. \"Then what the fans ask of us, the heart, ours cannot be doubted, and then there are the legs which must be trained. But what moves everything is the head.\"",

      • "content": "LONDON :Chelsea completed an unbeaten season and set a points record in the Women's Super League with a 1-0 home win over Liverpool on Saturday and Arsenal held on for a 4-3 victory over Manchester United to finish second in the standings. Chelsea, who sealed their sixth consecutive WSL title last month, were unable to break down Liverpool's defence until the 91st minute when Ashley Lawrence played in Aggie Beever-Jones and the England international produced an excellent right-foot shot from a tight angle. Chelsea, record eight-times champions, finished with 19 wins and three draws to earn 60 points - the highest total in a WSL season. They also became the first team to go unbeaten in a 22-match WSL campaign, though Arsenal (2012), Manchester City (2016) and Chelsea (2017-18) have achieved the feat in previous seasons with fewer games. \"\"We've just worked hard right until the end. Liverpool came with a game plan and defended really well,\" Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert told Sky Sports ahead of the club's trophy celebrations at Stamford Bridge. \"We just had to keep at it, use the momentum, use the fans and Aggie got that goal at the end. I thought the girls run them down and made the job as a substitute really easily in the second half. Credit to everyone in the group.\" At the Emirates Stadium, Chloe Kelly scored in the second minute to give Arsenal an early lead but United's Ella Toone levelled in the 13th minute, before strikes from Mariona Caldentey, Frida Maanum and Kim Little put the hosts in the driving seat. Renee Slegers' team endured a nerve-wracking finish to the match as Elisabeth Terland and Maya Le Tissier scored but United could not complete the comeback. Arsenal, who face Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final this month, ended the season with 48 points, four ahead of third-placed United. \"Great way to start the game, it's great playing for this club and scoring at the Emirates is incredible,\" Arsenal goalscorer Kelly told the BBC. \"United are a great side and we were able to do our job in front of goal.\" Bottom club Crystal Palace, relegated from the WSL last month and set to be replaced by the London City Lionesses, were beaten 5-2 by fourth-placed Manchester City.",

      • "description": "With no clear corporate uniform, we have entered the age of “vibe-based” dressing, a business owner says.",
      • "content": "Her question came like a bolt from the blue: “Kelvin, do you really think that shirt is appropriate for a client meeting?” I looked sheepishly down at my baggy, preloved tee – a style that predates our current enlightened era, where oversized second-hand clothes are not only accepted but applauded. On the front, in bold, bubble-like letters: “Who farted?” Suddenly, I realised how out of place I was, standing in the lobby of a glamorous-looking financial centre, surrounded by glamorous-looking people in tailored suits and designer dresses. “I ... uh ... I was in a rush. Sorry, boss.” She sighed, muttered something under her breath, then said: “Why don’t you grab a coffee and wait at the food court? We’ll catch you up after.” And that, my friends, was how I got red-carded from a meeting for the first – and thankfully last – time. I deserved it. I had spent three nights working on that deck, only to blow the final five minutes by dressing like a 17-year-old on a break from school. But in that moment, I was indignant. I’d done the work, hadn’t I? Wasn’t that what counted most? I can’t help but wonder – if that incident were to happen today, in our post-COVID age of “elevated comfort” , would I still be sent away? Or just met with a bemused shrug, before I headed up for the meeting with my colleagues, dressed to the nines in Lululemon athleisure and New Balance sneakers? THE BYGONE RULES OF WORK WEAR I’m exaggerating, of course. But then again, just the other day, someone in my own office showed up in slippers. Not slides. Not loafers with irony. Literally, cheap Tat Sing lookalike slippers. And to her credit, she walked in with the confidence of someone who’d slept eight hours and had eight slides of great ideas. Honestly, I wasn’t offended. If anything, I was impressed, most because she still managed to look more put-together than I did. Once upon a time, office fashion had rules. A dress shirt meant effort. A blazer meant intent. A tie meant something big, like a pitch presentation. No junior executive would be caught dead without patent leather shoes so shiny they could double as mirrors. For women, heels weren’t optional. Everyone was bound by the same unspoken code: Dress up to move up. But somewhere between the Great Resignation, remote work, and that weird season when everyone was baking sourdough in pajamas, the idea of dressing for work collapsed. It started with Casual Fridays, rolled on with hybrid Wednesdays, and the coffin seemed to be sealed by the silent acceptance of hotpants at team meetings – and I’m not talking about Zoom calls. NOT JUST WHAT WE WEAR, BUT WHY Look, I get it. The pandemic rewired everything. We learnt that comfort and productivity weren’t mutually exclusive. You can write strategy decks in a bathing suit as well as you can in a power suit. But here’s the thing: The erosion of dress codes hasn’t just changed what we wear; it’s changed why. It’s blurred the signals we once sent without saying a word. Like it or not, our attire says something about who we are – inside and out. Take the intern who wears a blazer over a crop top. Or the copywriter in normcore minimalism with an Aesop scent trail. These aren’t just outfits. They’re PowerPoints in cotton. Brand positioning – for people. With no clear corporate uniform, we’ve entered the age of “vibe-based” dressing. We no longer dress for the job we want, but for the mood we’re in. “Main character energy” now trumps “management-track polish”. On any given Monday, the odds that someone might show up channelling Kendall Roy from Succession or Portia from The White Lotus are pretty much even. Instead of official dress codes, we now have aesthetic lanes: “quiet luxury”, “clean girl”, “bloke-core”, “I-don’t-care-but-I-do”. If the typical office of old looked like a law firm, today’s looks more like a fashion-week reel. In a way, I’m here for it. But I wonder: Is there still room for dressing to impress? Not in a Mad Men cosplay way – in a quiet, intentional way. A crisp shirt, not for the client but for yourself. Trousers with seams, because the day deserves them. There’s dignity in effort, even in something as trivial as hems. In a previous job, I had a colleague who wore button-downs every day. Not out of vanity (okay, not just out of vanity), but to flip the switch from “home self” to “work self” – his own personal Severance ritual. And when he walked into a room, you could feel it. Meetings felt sharper. People sat up – not because he commanded authority, but because he carried presence. And it definitely stuck with me. So a few weeks ago, I did something small. I pulled out trousers with seams. Picked a shirt with buttons and a collar. Reached past my Homer Simpson “Bush Meme” Stan Smiths and – cautiously – grabbed a pair of real shoes. Actual shoes. Of course, no one noticed, but that’s the point. It really is about noticing yourself, and showing up accordingly. Showing up with intention isn’t performative. It’s grounding. A way of saying: I’m here. I’m locked in. Let’s go. Because in this era of anything-goes, effort matters – and intention still makes an impression.",

      • "description": "The perks of fame came together with its peculiarities. For Mr Paul Twohill, this included waking up in his boxer shorts to wide-eyed fans gawking at him in his bedroom.",
      • "content": "Despite having only a half-decent voice, 17-year-old Paul Twohill knew one thing was for certain when he stepped onto the Singapore Idol stage all those years ago: fans would go berserk and bellow his name. As a contestant on the second season of the reality singing contest, Mr Twohill's punk rock aura and his trademark Justin Bieber-esque fringe – which covered half his face – made him stand out from the rest of the competition. His prominent braces and dorky quips only served to enhance his likeability. Somehow, nothing he did then could dampen his popularity. Perhaps that’s why he always seemed larger than life to 10-year-old me who watched every episode on television with rapt attention. Fast forward 16 years to 2022 and I found myself, then a part-time English tutor in a tuition centre where I was teaching classes, shaking hands with “Teacher Paul”. I recalled squinting my eyes briefly to take a closer look at \"Teacher Paul\" who had a deep voice, the vibe of a well-adjusted man and clean-cut trim on his head. Gone were those signature braces, too. I approached him later that day after his students had waved him goodbye because I just had to know: “Are you ... ?” “Yes I am,” he said with a chuckle. “I get that a lot.” Mr Twohill's new stage was the front of a classroom and his audience was no longer made up of screaming admirers but mischievous children under 12 who are generally harder to please. For the last seven years, he has been an English teacher in an enrichment centre. Now 36 years old, he moved to Australia in February this year where he is pursuing an 18-month master’s degree in applied learning and teaching. We met up at his Singapore home in April for a proper sit-down interview during a university term break, and I found it quite fitting that his four-room flat in Ang Mo Kio was stylish but somewhat jumbled, because conversations with Mr Twohill can often feel that way. Over several video calls before meeting in person, our conversations covered everything from education to politics with his light-hearted stories peppered with some wry humour, interspersed frequently with bursts of passionate debate. That day however, in his home where he lives alone, we were determined to stick to the script. THE SHOCK OF WAKING UP TO OBSESSED FANS When I asked him to describe what it was like being a teenage pop star, Mr Twohill said it was an \"incredible experience\". “You had thousands of fans screaming, running up to the Singapore Idol van after filming, people writing your name on vending machines,” he said beaming. He still keeps boxes full of memorabilia and magazine clippings featuring him from 2006 but its main contents are the troves of handwritten letters from fans. He reckons there are hundreds of them. At the peak of his popularity, just walking from one end of Orchard Road to the other would take him two to three hours as he had to stop to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. But the popularity also came with some dicey situations: For every hundred fan letters he received, he would receive a handful of hostile texts and even death threats. Once a man had even lunged to attack him in public. “I've had phone calls where I apparently made someone pregnant, but I've never met them in my life. There was once I was out in the wee hours of the morning and a guy wanted to beat me up. “I've also been told by a producer during a road show that a guy ran over and literally tried to stab me and another contestant. I didn't even know, I was busy waving around,” he said. He admitted that there was a lot of social anxiety that came with the attention and that led him to want to stay home \"a lot of times\". But he quickly pointed out that even being at home was not a surefire way to shield himself from the public eye either. “I used to live on the second floor and fans used to hang around downstairs,” he said. “This particular day, I woke up from a nap and there were people in my room! It was a precarious situation ... I was only in my boxers.” Some secondary school girls had lied to his aunt that they were his friends and she opened the door to let them in. “Obviously I covered myself up and politely asked them to exit the room so I could get dressed... I entertained them for a little bit, then asked them to leave because I had schoolwork to do.” It wasn’t just starstruck teenagers he drew the attention of either. Mr Twohill said he received just one admission offer from a school in 2006 before his Singapore Idol appearances. In 2007 at the height of his popularity, local polytechnics caught wind that he intended to pursue a diploma in mass communication and offers from all five schools fell onto his lap. Brands aplenty approached him to sign sponsorships and record deals. At one point, he signed a deal with producer John Klass – now of the Gold 905 radio station – and produced a song that was number one on Singapore radio charts for three weeks. “The possibilities seemed endless,” he recounted. For the teenager who once dreamed of marrying pop icon Britney Spears and becoming a bonafide celebrity, he had gotten almost everything he ever wanted (bar Britney Twohill). The irony? He didn’t think he deserved any of it. “I personally don’t think, to this day, that I had the level of talent to justify having that amount of fame. “In this day and age, you see so many singers who are 17 or 18, and they are really great. “But it was different back then, your penetration point (to fame) was low and you had to bank on luck – and many other things.” THE DOWNSIDE OF FAME Exactly how and why he became such a popular figure is something Mr Twohill has spent a fair bit of time examining. He had even written an essay in university searching for the answers to these questions. He surmised in that reflection: “Celebrities and stars are created by the mass media to satisfy the requirement of commercial interests.” While he tried his best to be true to himself, Mr Twohill believed he was ultimately a “tool” to generate interest for the show. “I was first presented to the public as an ‘emo’ punk rocker, styling long hair, punk clothes, with a persona portrayed as goofy, eccentric, and relatively queer,” he said. “Everything from song choice to my mannerisms in public were, at times, controlled by producers to what they deemed appropriate to further ‘market’ my image and trademarks.” For instance, when asked to put up an item for a charity auction, his suggestion of auctioning a guitar was waved off in favour of a pair of used boxers – reason being that he had to be more “humorous” than inspirational. He was also often required to wear specific sponsored clothing to suit this “style”. But this struggle to be authentic is only half the baggage that comes with being a popular figure. He was also introduced to a world of vice even before he turned 18. Mr Twohill recalled being invited to parties, movie premieres and clubs almost every week, where alcohol and infidelity, he learned, were standard items on the menu of those who were famous personalities. At one of these events, he was even molested by an adult in the fashion industry. It was something he felt at the time he had no choice but to shrug off and move on from, he said. He also picked up drinking at an early age to try and overcome his anxieties and to socialise better – a skill he felt was required of a pop star. “For most people, it’s difficult enough to handle the social dynamics when they enter secondary school – and this was on another level. “I was 17. I was still studying. I had to learn the way the industry works and how to navigate around it. In gist, I felt it was a very accelerated social learning process.” That pressure to conform to a curated persona has stuck with him to this day. “Even right now as I'm on camera, I have this tendency to want to be goofy. But I’m not really like that. I’m actually quite intense,” he said. “I don't bring this side of me out often because I feel like it can be intimidating. It’s easier to navigate social situations when I'm just taking it more lightly, and usually a joke helps. “If anything, I was goofy (on stage) because at my core, I want to make people happy.” THE MAKING OF TEACHER PAUL In one of our earlier conversations, Mr Twohill was quick to bring up the concept of “ikigai” – a Japanese concept that roughly translates to a person’s reason to live. He cites his own “ikigai” as the reason for why life has taken him from the noise of entertainment to relative quietude of education. Since graduating from RMIT University Singapore where he studied mass communications in 2014, he dipped his toes in different industries but continued his job as a part-time host on Click Network which he joined in 2007. Though his infectious personality in several web series like “Chick vs Dick” and “Wonder Boys” helped its YouTube channel reach a million subscribers, he walked away from that world in 2017 when he decided to become a teacher. “I just didn’t think the content was always appropriate for children,” he said. “And I didn’t want what I’d done in the past to bleed into how I’d be perceived in this new career.” But does it still? I asked. I had recognised him back in 2022 after all. He smirked: “Sometimes the parents show my old videos to their kids, and then the kids come in and tease me. “But they still keep sending their kids to me. And that to me is the ultimate validation that I did something right back then.” It was there, during his seven-year stint as a teacher at Jan & Elly English Language School, where he said he found not just his purpose, but his peace. He tells me with conviction that he intends to continue teaching upon graduation from his Master's programme next year. “I remember asking myself, if I was going to die tomorrow, what is the one thing that would fulfill all the different elements of what I want to pursue in my life – and that was teaching. “I’ve always wanted to bring joy to people and impart good things to people. It’s fulfilling to inspire young minds, and not to mention that in my quest for knowledge as a teacher, I also get to learn,” he said. Just then, I paused for a brief moment to ponder about the polarity between his public persona and the introspective man sitting next to me. That thought was swiftly broken by a quip and a grin. “And then of course there’s bribery,” he exclaimed. “I get to give the kids Pokémon cards, and they’ll say ‘Wah, this teacher is the best teacher.’” As we wrapped up the interview, I realised that his seemingly \"jumbled\" persona was just two versions of Mr Twohill living simultaneously within a vessel, with either appearing when fitting to live out his life mission of making others happy. In one breath, he could recount wild, absurd stories from his heyday. In the next, he would speak with conviction about pedagogy and how to make learning joyful. Harkening back to his time as a Singapore Idol star, I asked him about the most memorable placard a fan made for him and his answer was more than apropos. “Who needs one hill when you've got two?”",

      • "description": "A sugary snack or caffeinated drink can be a shortcut to cope with stress, but it could prevent the person from learning how to process stress and manage one’s emotions in healthier ways.",
      • "content": "It is 3pm on a weekday and the post-lunch slump hits hard. Right on cue, a colleague chimes in with the familiar refrain: “Anyone want bubble tea?” No, I might initially protest, mostly out of a vague sense of health consciousness or guilt from the overpriced caffeinated drink I already bought that morning. Then, someone always coaxes: “It’s okay, just treat yourself.” It rarely takes much convincing. I cave, like clockwork, and end up reaching for a chocolate waffle, a fizzy drink or maybe a tiny pack of chips to push through a particularly tedious task. We tell ourselves it’s all right in moderation, that these little indulgences serve a purpose. After all, what is a little sugar or caffeine if it gives us the jolt we need to power through the day? Yet, more often than not, I’ve reached the bottom of the cup or the last bite of a snack before I’ve even finished the task for which I needed that boost. This begs the question: Is this “treat” truly helping? Or have we trained ourselves to believe that it does? I turned to a dietitian and psychologists to find some answers. When does a reward become a crutch? And are there better ways to lift our mood or productivity without needing to unwrap a snack or grab a cup of latte? PHYSICAL BENEFITS FROM “TREATS” First, the positive news. The health experts said that going for the occasional snack does offer a real, physiological boost – at least in the short term – but it depends on the type and portion of the “treat”. Ms Annabelle Johnson, an accredited dietitian in private practice here, said that consuming sugar can stimulate the brain’s “reward system”, leading to a release of dopamine and feeling of pleasure. A moderate intake of beverages containing caffeine such as coffee and tea may also carry health benefits and lead to a productivity boost, she added. For example, a cup of espresso might help someone who had a poor night’s sleep to focus better at work, though reaching for a third or fourth cup of coffee is likely to be excessive. “Caffeine is a stimulant that works in the brain. It can increase alertness in many people, though the effect differs between individuals and the dose of caffeine,” Ms Johnson said. However, she cautioned that excessive intakes of sugar can be associated with unstable blood sugar and in turn, unstable energy levels, while excessive caffeine intake can lead to anxiety, heart palpitations and insomnia. Ms Ooi Sze Jin, founder and psychologist at mental health social enterprise A Kind Place, said that the benefits gained from snacking for an energy boost is “definitely not just placebo”. The not-so-positive news is that our bodies may negatively adapt to the physical effects of relying on such snacks. Ms Ooi pointed out that caffeine may block “sleepy signals” in one’s brain but also constricts blood vessels. “With regular use, your brain adapts to this. When you don't have caffeine, those vessels dilate, which is a key reason for withdrawal headaches,” she added. “So there are genuine physical effects, but the habit and expectation create a strong psychological pull that can feel like a need even when the physical boost isn't as strong.” FILLING A PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED Indeed, beyond the physical effects that an afternoon cuppa provides, what often keeps the habit going is the psychological boost that these “treats” give, the health experts said. Mr Muhammad Haikal Jamil, founder and senior clinical psychologist at ImPossible Psychological Services, said that turning to daily sweet treats usually performs “an emotional function instead of a physiological one”. Eating confectionery may fulfil an emotional need to feel rewarded and satisfied. It can also be a way to self-soothe during periods of stress, providing a temporary emotional lift, he added. “Even though we may be feeling stressed, treating ourselves provides us with a sense of control in our ability to improve our mood. Enjoying the sweet treat also provides a window for us to take a break away from the stressors faced.” Ms Ooi the psychologist said that a sugary snack or caffeinated drink can be a learned shortcut to cope, but the person would not learn how to process stress and manage one’s emotions in healthier ways. “A healthy treat is a conscious, occasional reward or pleasure. A crutch is used to escape or numb feelings, often leading to guilt later and preventing you from building better coping skills.” Though snacking may not be a greater cause for concern compared to other coping strategies for stress such as substance abuse, Mr Haikal emphasised the importance of moderating any coping strategy that one adopts, even beneficial ones such as exercising. “Over-reliance on a certain coping strategy usually occurs as a result of our attempt to escape an overwhelming stressor. However, we are not addressing the issue or developing our ability to overcome them,” he added. In my example, therefore, if I keep \"treating\" myself during a slump, it can become a psychological crutch when consuming sweet treats crosses the threshold into “emotional eating”, where I am simply trying to “eat away” negative emotions to suppress feelings about work and deadlines. A key sign to watch for is difficulty stopping once you start or feeling compulsive cravings for sweets in response to stress, Mr Haikal said. YOUR BODY MAY BE TELLING YOU OF DEEPER NEEDS Though snacking wisely can help one feel satisfied while keeping energy levels up, Ms Johnson the dietitian said that one would be better off taking the right amounts of carbohydrates, fat and protein in meals because these can support stabler energy levels. She also pointed out that reliance on quick fixes such as a sugary snack or a dose of caffeine might be masking the primary source of one’s low energy such as sleep deprivation. “Our energy levels are affected by a myriad of factors from a lack of a balanced diet, poor sleep, chronic stress or chronic health conditions. Thus, it is important to take a step back and consider the root cause of how we are feeling,” Ms Johnson said. A desire to snack to boost energy could be coming from yet-to-be-uncovered chronic health conditions such as nutritional deficiencies, insomnia and diabetes, she added. Besides, drinking too much caffeine could be dangerous for anyone, not least those who may have prevailing health issues such as kidney or heart problems, Ms Johnson cautioned. She proposed picking up good habits that can support an energy slump. Apart from having a balanced snack, work towards staying hydrated and going for a walk instead. Mr Haikal said that it would not be enough to try and eliminate your reliance on sweet treats or caffeine since that may leave you feeling unfulfilled. You must know why it is unhealthy in the long run and accept it in the first place. You may also have to learn that there are other ways to handle a problem (stress) instead of choosing a quick fix (unhealthy snack) all the time. This means, for example, developing a mindset of understanding that you do not have to get rid of negative emotions immediately. You have to want to make active choices towards healthier alternatives based on your interests and preferences. Banking on snacking to cope with tough emotions may reinforce one’s tendency to avoid problems and weaken resilience, or one’s natural ability to bounce back from stress , Ms Ooi said. Instead, you may consider turning to non-consumption rewards such as stepping away from work for a quick walk or chatting with a colleague. These can be much more effective in the long term because they can train the brain to associate rewards to healthier activities. “Awareness is key. Start by observing when and why you crave them without judgment. Then, make tiny changes . Reduce the amount gradually such as opting for less sugar or a smaller coffee cup,” Ms Ooi suggested. While I personally make no promises to give up the occasional afternoon snack, working on this article has been a useful exercise in reflection . The red velvet latte I bought to motivate myself – rich with chocolate and good intentions – was scarfed down before I’d written a single word. What did help, in the end, was the promise of having some company from my colleague for the journey home, if I met my self-imposed deadline. No sugar rush and associated crash, just the quiet reward of something meaningful to look forward to at the end of a dreary work day.",

      • "content": "BARCELONA : Barcelona's players have discussed last week's Champions League elimination and are ready to put their disappointment behind them as they prepare to face LaLiga title rivals Real Madrid, manager Hansi Flick said on Saturday. Barca, who suffered a 4-3 Champions League semi-final defeat by Inter Milan on Tuesday, lead the Spanish top-flight by four points over second-placed Real. With four matches left in the season, a home win on Sunday would move Flick's side one victory away from their 28th Spanish league title. \"We're doing well. After the defeat in Milan, everyone knows it's not easy... but we're doing things right. We've talked about what we want to do in these two weeks,\" Flick told reporters. \"There are four more games to go. El Clasico is important, we have to show how well we can play. We have to show confidence. The players are doing very well... We've been talking about what they are thinking, what they are feeling. \"We had to talk about it as a group. Everyone knows that in a Clasico you have to give 100 per cent. You have to be active, intense, dominant. Real Madrid is a very good team, and we need the fans.\" Barcelona have conceded 10 goals in their last four games across all competitions, leading to questions over their solidity and the team's use of a high line when defending. Flick, however, is content with his back line. \"When we started, I was clear about the philosophy... There have been games, especially at the beginning, where we saw doubts, but the team has adapted well,\" he said. \"They have also been improving and are happy with the style and how we want to play. When you see the quality of the players you are happy.\" Flick also singled out defender Inigo Martinez for praise. \"He likes to play deeper, and it's unbelievable to see how he's adapted,\" the German said. \"He's a leader and focuses on winning every game. He works hard in every training session. He shares his positive feelings with his teammates and he is a fighter. A great leader.\" Flick said striker Robert Lewandowski, returning from a hamstring injury, and full back Alejandro Balde would not start against Real. \"Gerard Martin and the rest of the players are doing very well,\" Flick said. \"After this match, we have three more games left. Maybe they (Lewandowski and Balde) will get minutes in the second half, I think Balde is ready for that.\"",

      • "content": "KARACHI: A ceasefire has been agreed between India and Pakistan on Saturday (May 10). \"India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action,\" said Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on X. \"India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.\" Both countries have agreed to a \"full-fledged\" and \"not partial\" ceasefire, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told broadcaster Geo news on Saturday, adding that three dozen countries were involved in the diplomacy that secured it. In a post on X on Saturday, Dar, who is also Pakistan's deputy prime minister, wrote: \"Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!\" United States President Donald Trump earlier confirmed the \"full and immediate ceasefire\", amid both countries launching strikes and counter-strikes against each other's military installations. \"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,\" he said in a post on Truth Social. The announcement came on a day when fears that the countries' nuclear arsenals might come into play spiked as the Pakistan military said a top military and civil body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet. But Pakistan's defence minister later said no such meeting was scheduled. At the same time, officials from both sides showed a willingness for now to take a step back following the day's exchanges , while the civilian death toll on both sides of the border mounted to 66. This is a developing story. Refresh for updates.",

      • "description": "In this episode, Japan's alternative meat pioneers tackle taste, texture and market barriers to change how the world eats.",
      • "content": "Watch how Japanese innovation is transforming plant-based meat into a sustainable, flavourful future food solution. In a country renowned for culinary precision and devotion to umami, a quiet food revolution is taking root. This week’s Japan Hour explores how Japanese ingenuity is driving the development of alternative meat; from sorghum-based gyoza in Tokushima to maitake mushroom “meat” in Niigata, and a pork broth-style vegan ramen crafted for global tourists in snowy Hakuba. The episode begins in a bustling yakiniku restaurant in Tokushima City, where the sizzling allure of Awaji beef is rivalled by an unlikely contender: The “Supermeat” range of meatless dishes. Their deep-fried gyoza and bibimbap topped with a hamburg steak are entirely plant-based, made using locally grown sorghum instead of animal products. “At our restaurant, the hamburg and gyoza of the ‘Supermeat’ series contain no meat,” a staff member explains. The response? Overwhelming surprise. “What!? This isn’t meat? It tastes just like meat,” says one diner. Even the children prefer it. “If no one told you, you’d think it’s real meat,” another customer adds. Despite this promising feedback, plant-based food still battles perceptions in Japan. “When I hear 'alternative meat', it just bothers me. I’ve never eaten it before. I won’t eat it,” says one man bluntly, I just want to eat regular meat.” His sentiment reflects a wider challenge: while global trends show that by 2050, half of all meat is expected to be plant-based, Japan’s domestic market has plateaued. The reasons, as the programme lays out, are straightforward: Price and taste. Determined to reshape that narrative is Mr Masaharu Kato, R&D manager at Yukiguni Maitake in Niigata. His company, with over 50 per cent of Japan’s maitake mushroom market share, embarked on a two-year journey to turn their mushrooms into an alternative meat. “If we could turn them into food products, people might eat them all year round,” Mr Kato explains. “I believed there was more potential to explore, and I communicated that to senior management.” However, developing maitake meat proved technically complex. Initial attempts crumbled under pressure. Literally. “It's very soft. It doesn’t feel like it’s cooked,” a tester observes. The culprit? An enzyme in the mushroom that breaks down protein, causing structural failure. “The enjoyment of meat, after all, is in the chewiness, the flavour and the texture. This has none of that, so I’d say it’s hardly like meat at all,” one participant admits. But Mr Kato's persistence paid off. By steaming the mushrooms at over 90°C using proprietary technology, they neutralised the enzyme and dramatically improved texture. “The unsteamed version just melted away, but this one retains a proper texture,” a team member confirms. Instrument testing showed chewiness levels “close to actual meat”. Visibly delighted, the typically reserved Mr Kato is seen smiling: “It’s impressive. A great result.” Still, taste alone doesn’t guarantee success. “Great taste doesn’t always translate to strong sales,” remarks Sales Director Mr Shinji Morosawa. He points out a logistical problem: Alternative meat is often shelved in the dried goods section, away from fresh produce, where most shoppers roam. “How it’s sold is extremely important”. This feedback prompted a rethink. Mr Kato pivoted toward a ready-made, vegetable-pairing product — “a sauce you can chew on” — suitable for produce sections. After more trial and error, three retort pouch flavours were developed: tomato, sesame dan dan, and ajillo. At an in-house tasting, reactions were positive. “Tastes great,” says one participant, while the company president sees bigger possibilities: “By replacing meat with mushroom-based alternative meat, the range of cooking possibilities can significantly expand.” Their product, branded as “Mushroom Meat”, launched in January 2025 in a Tokyo trial. Sales on the day were four times the target with official national rollout slated for February. Meanwhile, in Hakuba Village, Nagano, one of the world’s top ski destinations, the challenge was different. With inbound tourists increasingly avoiding meat and fish, the local tourism board enlisted Mr Toshiyuki Fukushima from Fuji Oil to develop a suitable menu. His team had previously crafted Kyoto’s acclaimed soy-based “chicken skewer”, and now they were aiming higher: Pork broth-style ramen made entirely from plants. Inspired by the birth of his child and Japan’s declining catch of bonito and sardines, Mr Fukushima made it his mission to help future generations. “It made me realise that we don’t know what will happen in the future,” he reflects. “The idea of passing things on to the next generation felt incredibly meaningful.” Initial versions of the ramen lacked aroma, an essential sensory hook. “What’s missing is probably the aroma,” noted chef Takeshi Abe, a Hakuba local with international experience. The breakthrough came in the form of kuromoji, a fragrant mountain herb. “When you pour boiling water over it, the aroma is released,” Mr Abe explains. “That’s amazing!” Mr Fukushima responds. “It’s a go.” To mimic pork back fat, the team turned to freeze-dried tofu, sliced and fried. “It does look like it. Visually, at least,” says Mr Abe, though they admitted the texture needed more work. Nonetheless, after four months of effort, the final product, ramen with wheat gluten char siu, kuromoji-scented broth and mushroom-based mince, debuted at a local event. “It really does taste like pork broth,” a resident comments. “There’s even some minced ‘meat’.” When told it was freeze-dried tofu, the reaction was: “No way! It resembles pork back fat.” Later, at Hakuba’s ski resort, foreign tourists echo the sentiment. “Tastes great,” one says. “It’s great Japanese food.” Another adds, “Coming all the way from New Zealand, it’s good to have this.” Mr Fukushima, watching from the sidelines, summarises his vision: “We want everyone to say, ‘Yeah, this tastes great,’ and if it just so happens to be plant-based, then people of all kinds can sit around the same table and eat together.” In both rural kitchens and corporate labs, Japanese innovators are reimagining meat — not as a lesser substitute, but as a standalone culinary experience. Whether from mushrooms or soy, this is no longer just “alternative” meat. It is food for the future, rooted in tradition, driven by technology and designed to bring everyone to the table.",

      • "content": "Around 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, South Korea’s main conservative party, the People Power Party (PPP), what amounts to a quiet procedural coup. In the dead of night, three appeared in rapid succession on the party’s bulletin board – each one more consequential than the last. The first, titled abruptly the nomination of Kim Moon-soo. Kim had secured the candidacy through a months-long primary process, earning the support of the party base. The second, a one-hour window – between 3 am and 4 am on the same day – for new candidates to register. Applicants were required to submit 32 documents, including a Proof of Criminal Record (No. 15), and an Election Office Establishment Report (No. 24). Many of these items require in-person visits to government offices and time. Given that the offices were closed on Saturday and the notices appeared just hours before the deadline, the only conceivable candidate was someone pre-informed and fully prepared. The and final notice, confirmed what many suspected: Han Duk-soo was listed as the sole registered candidate. According to of the PPP’s constitution, “the presidential candidate shall have priority over all authority over party affairs to the extent necessary to efficiently promote election affairs from the day of election until the presidential election day.” Kim Moon-soo, citing this clause, attempted to exercise his authority. His request was ignored by party leadership. , who had earned his nomination through a transparent and competitive process, was cast aside without explanation or apology. In a matter of hours, the outcome of months of democratic engagement was overturned. In its place was a backroom coronation. That authority now rests with Han Duck-soo – the former prime minister under President Yoon – who wasn’t even a party member until hours before his nomination. He did not participate in the primary process, did not stand for a vote, and has never run for elected office in his life. He has no record of political ambition and has publicly stated repeatedly that he will simply “follow what the party tells him to do.” When Kim Moon-soo invoked Article 74 of the party constitution to assert that he was the rightful representative of the party, Han simply ignored him. Even more curiously, Han has said that if elected, he plans to step down after three years – raising urgent questions about who or what truly stands behind his candidacy. The PPP leadership’s decision to cancel the candidacy of someone chosen through public primaries has left many South Koreans facing a grim realization: They have no real voice in selecting their own leaders. The will of the people can be undone – silently, without warning and without recourse. While the leftist Minjoo Party has become a vehicle for Lee Jae-myung – a party by Lee, of Lee and for Lee – the conservative PPP has similarly transformed into a party driven by, shaped by and ultimately serving the interests of those behind Han Duk-soo. What took place on May 10 was not routine political strategy. It was a full-scale collapse of democratic norms – and a warning shot fired at the very foundation of South Korea’s constitutional order. In a country once hailed as a beacon of democratic maturity in East Asia, both of its main parties now seem dominated by personality cults and elite power plays. South Korea’s political unraveling is not happening in isolation. The country occupies one of the world’s most critical geopolitical crossroads – bordering China, Japan, and Russia, and anchored by a long-standing military alliance with the United States. The Korean Peninsula is not a relic of Cold War tension. It is an active geopolitical fault line. At a time when the US is trying to contain China’s rise – militarily, economically, and technologically – with the help of its allies, South Korea’s liberal democratic institutions are being hollowed out from within. Washington has long viewed Seoul as a stable democratic ally in a region increasingly dominated by authoritarian regimes. But if that democratic core erodes, the consequences could be serious. A compromised South Korea undermines US-led coalition-building, weakens trust among fellow democracies like Japan, and emboldens authoritarian actors eager to see liberal democracy fail in East Asia. The events of May 10 should alarm not only South Koreans, but all who are committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific. South Korea is a strategic linchpin – and its democracy now stands in jeopardy.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) From optical illusions to brain-teasing puzzles, social media is often abuzz with viral images that challenge the sharpest of minds. These visual riddles can leave even the most intelligent individuals scratching their heads. However, there are some whose eyes are as sharp as a hawk's-they can solve such puzzles in mere seconds. Today, we bring you one such mind-bending optical illusion. At first glance, you'll clearly see a horse in the image. But the real challenge is to find the second“HORSE” hidden within it. And here's the twist-you only have 10 seconds to do so. This brain teaser was shared by TiffyTaffy and has taken social media by storm. It's so cleverly crafted that even those with high IQs are struggling to solve it quickly. The image unmistakably shows a horse standing in a field, but the challenge lies in spotting the second“HORSE.” Only those with keen vision and a creative outlook are likely to succeed. If you manage to find the hidden element within 10 seconds, consider yourself intellectually above average. Here's a tip: to solve this puzzle, you'll need to shift your perspective and abandon conventional thinking. Set a timer for 10 seconds and dive into this mental challenge. Did you spot the hidden“HORSE”? Take a closer look-perhaps it's right in front of you. If you're still struggling, here's a clue: don't look for a second horse figure. Focus on the horse that's already visible. Still nothing? Then pay close attention to the white markings on the horse's body. Now that your 10 seconds are up, let's reveal the answer. If you examine the image carefully-specifically the white markings on the horse-you'll notice that the word“HORSE” is subtly written across its body. Many people miss this detail because they instinctively start searching for another horse in the field, rather than focusing on what's already in plain sight. If you managed to spot the word, congratulations-you have an exceptional eye for detail. But if not, there's no need to worry. These puzzles are designed to train your brain. With regular practice, your problem-solving skills and visual perception will improve, and you'll soon be cracking such illusions with ease. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) Pakistan on Saturday, May 10, 2025, announced that the nation was opening up its airspace for all kinds of traffic moments after the nation agreed with India on a ceasefire amid the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, reported the news agency PTI. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced the development on Saturday as the nation eyes normalcy amid the raging tensions with India. “All airports in the country are available for normal flight operations. Passengers are requested to contact the relevant airline for the latest schedule of their flights,” they said, according to the agency report. According to the agency report, Pakistan's airspace has been fully restored for all types of flights, and the airports are available for normal flight operations. Earlier reports showed that Pakistan's airspace remained closed for a certain duration and routes due to the rising tensions with India. This reportedly hampered regular air traffic, creating an inconvenience for the passengers. India-Pakistan Ceasefire Pakistan opened up its airspace moments after India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Saturday, May 10 announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to stop firing action on land and air from 5 p.m. “The DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) of Pakistan called DGMO of India at 15.35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 1700 hours IST,” said Vikram Misri. According to people aware of the development, there are no further plans for talks between the two nations on any other issue at the moment. The agreement comes nearly two days after Pakistan escalated the conflict by attacking India through shelling on the border region. This was a response to India's retaliation action against terrorism, which claimed the lives of 26 people in the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025. • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday (May 10) the military had given \"a befitting response\" to India after the worst confrontations in decades between the nuclear-armed neighbours. \"Today, we have given India a befitting response and avenged the blood of innocent lives,\" he said in a statement issued by his office, after speaking with all political parties. Pakistan said it had launched counterattacks against India on Saturday, using medium-range Fateh missiles to target an Indian missile storage facility and air bases in Pathankot and Udhampur. The strikes came after Islamabad said India had fired missiles at three airbases in the country. Indian wing commander Vyomika Singh told a briefing on Saturday there were \"several high-speed missile attacks\" on air bases, but \"limited damage\" to equipment. Pakistan earlier accused India of targeting three of its bases with missiles, including one in Rawalpindi, some 10km from the capital, Islamabad. At least 13 civilians were killed in Pakistani Kashmir in 12 hours until noon on Saturday, the region's disaster authority said, as India and Pakistan traded fire after Islamabad's military action against India in the early hours of the day. More than 50 people were also injured in the region, the authority said. The government has named its new retaliatory operation against India \"Bunyan-un-Marsoos\". Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the name means “a wall fortified with lead”. Pakistan's defence minister added on Saturday that no meeting of the top military and civil body overseeing the country's nuclear arsenal had been scheduled following its earlier military operation against India. \"This thing that you have spoken about (nuclear option) is present, but let's not talk about it - we should treat it as a very distant possibility, we shouldn't even discuss it in the immediate context,\" Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told ARY TV. \"Before we get to that point, I think temperatures will come down. No meeting has happened of the National Command Authority, nor is any such meeting scheduled.\" The clashes, involving fighter jets, missiles, drones and artillery , are the worst in decades and have killed more than 60 civilians. The fighting was touched off by an attack last month in the Indian-administered side of disputed Kashmir that killed 26 tourists, mostly Hindu men , which Delhi blamed on Islamabad. India accused the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba - a UN-designated terrorist organisation - of carrying out the attack, but Islamabad has denied any involvement and called for an independent probe. The countries have fought several wars over the Muslim-majority Kashmir, which both claim in full but administer separate portions of since gaining independence from British rule in 1947. \"AVOID MISCALCULATION\" In a series of calls to senior officials in both countries, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged them to restore direct communication to \"avoid miscalculation\". Rubio \"emphasised that both sides need to identify methods to de-escalate and re-establish direct communication to avoid miscalculation\", State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said. For the first known time since the conflict erupted, Rubio also spoke with Pakistan's army chief, considered the country's key powerbroker. China also made a similar appeal as did the G7 group of industrialised nations. The overnight Indian attack on the Rawalpindi air base could be heard from Islamabad. The air base is used to receive foreign dignitaries, and Saudi Arabia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir had departed just hours earlier. Separately, AFP reported loud explosions in Srinagar, the capital of India-administered Kashmir. A police officer speaking on condition of anonymity said the Awantipora military airbase outside the city had been struck. \"Pakistan's blatant escalation with drone strikes and other munitions continues along our western border,\" the army said on X. The army said \"multiple enemy drones were spotted flying over\" a military cantonment in Amritsar in Punjab, a state adjoining Kashmir, and were \"instantly engaged and destroyed by our air defence units\". RUSH TO LEAVE In Jammu, Indian-run Kashmir's second biggest city, people scrambled to board a special train dispatched to ferry people out. \"There are loud explosions the entire night,\" said Karan Varma, a 41-year-old mason. \"There is no choice but to leave.\" The overwhelming majority were poor labourers from other parts of India seeking to return to their homes. On Friday, the Indian army said it had \"repulsed\" waves of Pakistani attacks using drones and other munitions overnight, and gave a \"befitting reply\". Pakistan's military spokesman denied that Islamabad was carrying out such attacks, and vowed revenge for India's initial strikes on Wednesday. Pakistani military sources said its forces had shot down 77 drones, with debris of many incursions seen by AFP in cities across the country. Pakistan's military on Saturday morning claimed New Delhi's forces had bombed their own territory in Amritsar, without providing evidence. The conflict has caused major disruptions to international aviation, with airlines having to cancel flights or use longer routes that do not overfly the India-Pakistan frontier. India has closed 32 airports, while schools in areas close to the border on both sides were shuttered, affecting millions of children. Pakistan' aviation authority said its airspace would be closed until noon on Sunday.",

      • "description": "As the Philippines' two most prominent political clans flex their muscles in the usually low-key process to pick senators and local government leaders, relations with China have emerged as a political lightning rod.",
      • "content": "MANILA: In political rallies, Senate hearings and voter surveys ahead of Monday's (May 12) midterm elections in the Philippines, China has been an overwhelming - and unusual - presence. The shadow of its giant maritime neighbour has loomed over the Philippines for years, but as the country's two most prominent political clans flex their muscles in the usually low-key process to pick senators and local government leaders, relations with China have emerged as a political lightning rod. The outcome could end up shaping the country's strategic positioning over the remaining half of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's six-year term, which began in 2022. \"Will we allow ourselves to return to the time when our leaders wanted us to become a province of China?\" Marcos asked voters at a rally in February, in a dig at predecessor Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter Sara, who is currently vice-president and a key Marcos rival. During his 2016 to 2022 term, Duterte shifted foreign policy on China, adopting conciliatory rhetoric and downplaying disputes in the South China Sea. The strategy drew concern from Washington and raised questions about the Philippines' longstanding security alliance with the United States. In contrast, Marcos has moved to rekindle and deepen ties with Washington. \"These are hot button issues that many Filipino voters can relate to, particularly on the issue on China. There was a time in the past when foreign policy did not really matter that much during elections,\" said Ederson Tapia, professor of public administration at the University of Makati. \"But now it does.\" An April survey found that a majority of voters in the country of 110 million prefer candidates who assert Philippine sovereignty in the South China Sea, where the Marcos-led administration has taken a more assertive stance in its maritime confrontations with Beijing, which continue unabated. It is a sentiment that Marcos has tapped into since he started his campaign for the slate of Senate candidates that he is backing. In the February rally, Marcos pointed to his candidates, saying: \"None of them were applauding China when our coast guard was being bombed with water, when our fishermen were being blocked, when their catch was stolen, and our islands seized to become part of another country.\" China's embassy in Manila did not respond to questions from Reuters. The Duterte camp enjoyed a surge of sympathy when he was arrested by the International Criminal Court in March and taken to The Hague, but Marcos' candidates remain ahead in polls and appear poised to dominate the Senate race. A Duterte spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. DISINFORMATION PROLIFERATION Through a months-long campaign, Marcos has kept up the pressure and focused on China as a key election issue, while his allies have taken aim at Sara Duterte for her silence on China's actions. Sara, a likely future presidential candidate, was once a Marcos ally but now faces an impeachment trial on charges including a threat to assassinate the president if she herself was harmed. In the Philippines, the 24-member Senate acts as the jury in any impeachment trial, making the midterms even more consequential in determining Sara Duterte's political future. Sara, who has denied wrongdoing, has responded to her impeachment with defiance, asking the Supreme Court to nullify the complaint against her. A strong mandate for Marcos would not only define his ability to govern decisively in the remaining three years of his term, but would also shape the 2028 presidential race, said Victor Andres \"Dindo\" Manhit, a political analyst and founder of Stratbase Group, a research and advisory firm. Marcos is limited to a single term under the Constitution and is expected to anoint a successor. If she survives impeachment, Sara Duterte would also be eligible to run in 2028. \"Those who will run need to be tested on consistency with regard to these issues,\" Manhit said, referring to the protection of Philippines' maritime rights and sovereignty. \"And one of them is the current vice-president. She has not spoken against this coercion by China.\" A spokesperson for Sara Duterte did not respond to a request for comment. The midterm election comes amid a proliferation of disinformation in the Philippines. Up to 45 per cent of discussions about the elections on social media have been driven by inauthentic accounts, Reuters reported last month. The use of fake accounts and paid influencers for political operations is widespread in the Philippines, but a top security official and a senator alleged last month that Chinese state-sponsored groups might be attempting to influence Filipinos. China's foreign ministry and its embassy in Manila have rejected the accusations.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - Kashmir Observer) Text by Taufiq Majeed Photos by Faisal Khan Days after the shelling stopped, Uri still smells like war. The border town is scorched and silent, its air thick with smoke, gunpowder, and the sting of burnt timber. Amid the wreckage, a few residents are beginning to return. They're quiet, cautious, and unsure of what they'll find in the ruins of home. “It smells of fire and fear,” said Roshan Kumar, standing where his shop once stood in Lagama. Read AlsoPak, India Agree To Immediate Ceasefire, US Says It Mediated The TruceStay Calm, Ignore Rumours: J&K Govt Amid Indo-Pak Tensions Kumar returned from Baramulla, stepping over cracked tiles and burnt signboards, searching for anything that could be salvaged. “We built our lives brick by brick. It took minutes to lose everything.” On the night of May 8, Pakistani artillery pounded Uri in what many call the most intense cross-border assault since 1948, when this region first came under fire during the foremost India-Pakistan war. More than 50 homes and buildings were damaged in the recent flare-up. A woman was killed. Nine others, including children, were wounded. Bazaars burned, rooftops collapsed, and entire neighborhoods emptied overnight. Now, survivors are trickling back, to see what remains of homes they fled in the dark. And what pieces of their lives can be carried out in plastic sacks and trembling hands. In Salamabad, families picked through rubble with bare fingers. A broken cot. A rusted pressure cooker. A child's sweater, singed at the sleeves. “We left with nothing,” said Bashira Bano, whose kitchen was flattened by a shell.“Now there is even less.” Kalgai, once a vibrant cluster of homes near the Line of Control, is a skeleton of blackened walls and scorched fields. In Bandi Market, Uri's commercial hub, the damage is complete. Several shops are reduced to warped shutters. A cow wandered through the ruins, unfazed. There was no one to shoo it away. “It reminded us of 1948,” said Hakim ud din Choudhary, 85, walking the cracked streets of Gingal. “Back then, the mountains had echoed with intense fire. It's happening again. Seventy-five years, and no bunkers, no safety. Just silence and smoke.” The shelling followed India's launch of Operation Sindoor, a military response to a terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. Uri subsequently was caught in the middle. The townspeople say they heard no warning. Only explosions. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha arrived in Uri on a rain-soaked Friday, flanked by a battery of bureaucrats. He walked past the charred remains of homes in Gingal and Lagama, promising immediate relief and long-term reconstruction. “The nation stands with you,” he told a small gathering of residents. Ministers Sakina Ittoo and Javeed Dar also arrived and offered words of consolation and comfort. Before these high-profile visitors, civil defense teams and local police were working around the clock, evacuating hundreds and delivering food and medical kits to scattered survivors. But the psychological toll is harder to tend to. Thirteen-year-old Bisma flinches upon hearing a loud sound. Her brother Ayan, 8, hasn't eaten properly in three days. The kids saw a shrapnel shattering their Salamabad home, before running for their lives. “I covered the children with my body,” said their father, Abid Sheikh, a sanitation worker.“I thought it was the end.” The night the bombs fell, Nargis Begum tried to flee with her family in their SUV. A shell ripped through the vehicle near Razarwani, killing her instantly. Her daughter's screams echoed through the region long after the shelling stopped. Now, neighbours pass their house without looking up. Uri's pulse has purportedly paused. Most of the workforce has left. Markets are flattened. Schools are closed. Those who stayed behind move carefully, watching the sky, ears tuned for distant rumble. Some families, like Molvi Zubair's, returned briefly to collect the elderly before vanishing again into safer districts. “Our village is hollow now,” Zubair said.“The animals are alone. The courtyards are deserted. And we still don't know if we're safe.” In Kamal Kote, locals are stockpiling ration bags and charging phones.“We're not sleeping,” said a mother as her daughter clung to her shawl.“Only waiting.” The residents of Uri say they've lived on the frontline long enough to know what life on the Zero Line really means. “War is easy from a distance,” said Saquib Bhatti, a college student who returned from Srinagar to help his neighbors evacuate.“The people here carry the cost. Every time.” Uri is a ghost town, its streets troubled and torn. Those who come back find no peace, just fear that bombs will fall again, wiping out what's left of home. Tomorrow feels as broken as the walls around them. MENAFN10052025000215011059ID1109531704 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind.
