      • "content": "Second-placed Napoli are feeling the heat in the Serie A title race as they host AC Milan on Sunday with Antonio Conte's side having struggled since the departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January after only one win in their last seven league matches. Conte has more than once expressed his frustration over the Georgia international's departure, having viewed Kvaratskhelia as a key figure in Napoli's future. The demanding coach has struggled to find a player capable of filling the winger's role. Without the speedy playmaker Napoli have lost top spot to Inter Milan, who are three points clear with nine rounds left. The Naples side face a Milan team on Sunday whose coach Sergio Conceicao is under pressure in a match that could help determine the trajectory of the final stretch for both clubs. While Napoli remain in contention for the Scudetto, Milan’s campaign is on the verge of being defined as a failure. Conceicao's side sit ninth in the table, six points behind Bologna, who currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League place. The bright spot for the Portuguese manager is that he again has a full squad to choose from for the clash. TUDOR'S JUVE Inter can strengthen their position atop Serie A when they host Udinese earlier on Sunday. After a season spent chasing Napoli, they have opened up a gap with a total of 64 points. Udinese should present a manageable challenge, with Inter having four straight league wins over them, but the Nerazzurri may lack their usual attacking firepower as Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram are likely to be sidelined due to injuries. With key defenders Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij also unavailable, manager Simone Inzaghi will be left to test whether they have the squad depth to carry them through the final stretch of the season, as they aim to win another Scudetto. Juve start their new era under manager Igor Tudor with a home match against Genoa on Saturday. The Turin club sacked Thiago Motta following two consecutive heavy defeats in a disappointing season, with the side fifth in the standings. Former Juve player Tudor will have until the end of season to prove he can lead the \"Old Lady' next term. The challenges are mounting for the Croatian, who remains without key defensive players Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal and Andrea Cambiaso, as he looks to bring stability to a side that has rotated personnel and positions throughout the season. GASPERINI ERA For Atalanta, who visit Fiorentina on Sunday, the mood suggests a bittersweet ending to a successful era under Gian Piero Gasperini, who has said he will not renew his deal beyond next season after a nine-year spell at the club. Speculation in Italian media has linked the 67-year-old with a move to either AS Roma or Juve next term if things do not work out with Tudor. Meanwhile, Thiago Motta and Maurizio Sarri are reportedly being considered as successors in Bergamo. Atalanta remain outside contenders in the Scudetto race, sitting third with 58 points, but the media focus has been on Gasperini's future more than the club's ambitions this term. \"There's always a beginning and an end. What lies in between is the journey, which is often the most beautiful part,\" Gasperini said recently, adding that he was focused on ending the season at Atalanta on a high note. He has already taken the club to several top-three finishes and delivered a Europa League title in May. \"Am I looking for a house in Rome or Turin? For now, my home is in Bergamo. The present is what matters, and there are still nine league matches to play,\" he said. Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui is doubtful for the Fiorentina clash after struggling with a muscle injury.",

      • "description": "Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam urged everyone to \"move on\" from the incident.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Minister for Law and Home Affairs K Shanmugam said on Thursday (Mar 27) that he will not be filing a police report over the behaviour of two sisters who disrupted his Meet-The-People (MPS) session. He also urged everyone to move on from the incident at a doorstop interview during a visit to a temporary prayer site at the Northview Secondary School. The two women had confronted Mr Shanmugam at an MPS outside the Chong Pang branch office two weeks ago. The minister then posted a seven-minute video of his conversation with them on his Facebook page on Mar 13. The sisters had approached Mr Shanmugam to talk about the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA). However, the interaction turned confrontational and they shouted “coward” at the minister after he tried to end the conversation with them. When asked about the video on Thursday, Mr Shanmugam said that what happened is potentially a criminal offence but he will not take action against the sisters. “I haven’t filed a police report and I’m not filing a police report. From what I understand, the two sisters, amongst others, are under investigations for other offences,” he said. “They have been under investigations previously and those investigations are continuing. But as to what happened at my MPS in Chong Pang ... I’m not intending to file any police report.” When asked for more details about the offences the sisters were under investigation for, Mr Shanmugam said he was aware they are for some offences that took place before the incident at his MPS. “That has nothing to do with what happened at MPS ... what they have done elsewhere, it’s not within my hands, the law has got to take its course,” he said. CNA has sent questions to the police about the alleged offences by the two women in the video. Mr Shanmugam also said he wants to “move on” from the incident and focus on building community by having engagements to “discuss issues, including difficult ones”. “We can do it (in a) constructive way. If you look at Singapore, all our cultures, that’s the approach,” said Mr Shanmugam. “That message is even stronger in this month of Ramadan ... so let’s focus on building a stronger, better community together.” Mr Shanmugam added that the sisters are both young and he hopes they learn from this. “I’m like their parents’ generation, and really I hope that they will have the space to learn and grow from this incident,” he said. A reporter then asked Mr Shanmugam about online suggestions that the incident was staged, apparently because his voice was captured very clearly on the video he shared on social media. Mr Shanmugam said: “Staged means the whole thing was planned, which means I made the sisters behave in the way they did and I got everybody to act and shout ‘coward’ and do everything else. “I think the sisters will be the last to agree that they are part of a programme by the PAP.” He explained that his voice was clear because he had been miked up for a community event before the MPS. His volunteers had been filming him at the event, as well as greeting the residents at the MPS when he encountered the sisters, he said. “Certainly it wasn’t planned ... I think to suggest that would be an extreme conspiracy theory.”",

      • "description": "\"Nasi lemak\", \"otak-otak\" and \"fish head curry\" have also made their way into the dictionary.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Several everyday expressions used in Singapore and Malaysia were on Wednesday (Mar 26) added to the Oxford English Dictionary in its quarterly update for March 2025. Popular food items also featured heavily in the update, with a number of dishes familiar on both sides of the Causeway – and in Indonesia – now defined in the dictionary. Commenting on the additions, Oxford mused over the value of what it described as \"untranslatable words\" and how they expand the vocabularies of different forms of English. Among the added words was \"alamak\", which the dictionary defined as an interjection expressing \"surprise, shock, dismay or outrage\". \"Kaya\" received double the acknowledgement, entering the Oxford pantheon in its own right – \"a jam made from coconut milk, eggs and sugar, usually flavoured with pandan leaf\" – and as part of \"kaya toast\" – \"a sandwich consisting of two slices of toasted bread spread with butter and kaya\". \"Ketupat\" – \"a small rice cake boiled in a pouch of woven palm leaves\" – also made the cut, along with \"nasi lemak\" – \"a Malay dish of rice cooked in coconut milk and flavoured with pandan leaf, served with various garnishes (such as cucumber slices, fried fish, roasted peanuts, cooked egg and sambal) and usually eaten for breakfast\" – and \"otak-otak\" – \"a Southeast Asian dish consisting of ground fish or other seafood mixed with spices and coconut milk, wrapped in banana or palm leaves, and cooked by steaming or grilling over an open charcoal fire, usually served as an accompaniment to nasi lemak\". The somewhat more self-explanatory \"fish head curry\" – \"a dish influenced by Chinese and South Indian cuisine, consisting of a large fish head, usually of a sea bream or snapper, cooked in a tangy tamarind-based curry gravy with vegetables such as aubergine and okra\" – and \"half-boiled egg\" – \"an egg which has been cooked briefly in freshly boiled water such that the yolk and the white remain runny, then cracked open and served in a bowl, seasoned with dark soy sauce and white pepper\" – were also added. With the number of food items added, it was perhaps inevitable that \"tapau\" – \"to take (food or drink) from a restaurant or shop where it has been prepared, for consumption off the premises\" – would also be included. Also getting the nod was \"mat rempit\" – \"a (typically young) man who participates in illegal motorcycle street racing and often performs dangerous stunts\". Several words from other Southeast Asian countries also made the list, including \"cyclo\", \"kababayan\" and \"lumpia\". Words with Spanish roots featured extensively in the quarter's additions, and a number of entries reflected developments in technology and popular culture, as well as topics that have been in the news – think \"Gen Alpha\", \"large language model\" and \"vape\". The full list of words that have been added to the dictionary this quarter is available here .",

      • "content": "PARIS: France pledged €2 billion in military aid to Ukraine as some 30 leaders met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris on Thursday (Mar 27) to discuss strengthening Kyiv's position and what role they might play if a peace deal is struck with Russia. It was the third summit of what France and Britain have called the \"coalition of the willing\", reflecting concern among Europeans that the US no longer represents a firm bulwark of support for Ukraine in its three-year-old fight against Russia. Among those attending were the British, Polish and Italian prime ministers as well as the NATO secretary-general and Turkish vice president. The gathering was taking place after Zelenskyy agreed earlier this month to proceed with ceasefire talks to ensure a resumption of US aid and intelligence sharing. US President Donald Trump, in office since Jan 20, has said he wants to broker a swift end to the war. But a series of bilateral talks between the US and the warring sides has yet to yield a significant change in hostilities. Russia and Ukraine said on Mar 18 they agreed to cease strikes on each other's energy infrastructure but both sides have accused each other of flouting that limited truce . \"First and foremost (we will discuss) the immediate support for Ukraine. It must go on because it is necessary to continue the resistance,\" President Emmanuel Macron told reporters on Wednesday evening at a press conference with Zelenskyy. Macron committed to a further €2 billion in French military support, including missiles, warplanes and air defence equipment. Zelenskyy said other partners could announce aid packages on Thursday. The summit format aims to forge a role for Europe in any talks on ending the conflict. While the United States is not present, French officials say the outcome of the gathering will be shared with the US administration. Macron spoke with Trump ahead of the meeting, the French presidency said. The discussions will focus on how to strengthen Ukraine militarily to deter future attacks, and how to monitor limited ceasefires over sea targets and energy infrastructure as discussed at US-led talks this week in Saudi Arabia . Washington said on Tuesday it had signed separate agreements with Moscow and Kyiv for a ceasefire in the Black Sea , but Russia presented conditions. They included a demand that sanctions be lifted on Russian state agricultural lender Rosselkhozbank and that it be reconnected to the international payment system SWIFT. The European Union, which ejected Rosselkhozbank from SWIFT, said on Wednesday it can be reinstated only when Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine. REASSURANCE FORCE European efforts, led by Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to create security arrangements for Ukraine are shifting from sending troops to considering alternatives as they face political and logistical constraints, and the prospect of Russia and the United States opposing their plans, officials have told Reuters. \"The Prime Minister will underline that all must come together to support Ukraine to remain in the fight and back US efforts to make real progress despite continued Russian obfuscation,\" Starmer's office said in a statement. Planning so far has looked at European military capabilities including aircraft, tanks, troops, intelligence and logistics. Discussions have centred on what European nations can contribute to support any future force, it said. An outline document for Thursday's summit seen by Reuters refers to a possible future \"reassurance force\" that would have the support of the United States. Such a force positioned in Ukraine would aim to offer security guarantees and deter future aggression from Russia, although there are few signs at this stage that the United States would offer its backing. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused France and Britain on Thursday of hatching plans for \"military intervention in Ukraine\" under the guise of a peacekeeping mission, adding such an intervention could lead to a direct military clash between Russia and NATO. Zelenskyy said he hoped there would be more clarity on which countries would eventually commit to such a force, while acknowledging that it was not simple and was early in the process. Highlighting different views among Ukraine's partners, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated his country's opposition to any such force. \"Not sending troops on a mission unless they are part of the United Nations, (this) is the only condition for us to deploy military personnel\" in Ukraine, Tajani said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening.",

      • "content": "CHIANG MAI: A bright orange helicopter races over the jungle to dump water on a raging wildfire that is adding to the air pollution choking Thailand's northern tourist hub of Chiang Mai. Chutaphorn Phuangchingngam, the only female captain in Thailand's national disaster prevention team, draws on two decades of flying to steer the Russian-made chopper through the thick smoke. Forest fires are burning in several areas of northern Thailand, contributing to the annual spike in air pollution that comes with farmers burning stubble to prepare their land for the next crop. Chiang Mai had the sixth worst air quality of any major city in the world on Thursday (Mar 27) morning, according to monitor IQAir, and the city governor has warned residents against staying outdoors. Chutaphorn told AFP the dense forest and hilly terrain made helicopters the best tool to fight the blazes. \"We use (helicopters) to put out fire in areas that are difficult to reach, especially in the mountains,\" she said. Chutaphorn and her six-member crew flew over Huai Bok reservoir, collecting 3,000 litres of water each time before heading 2km to the fire zone, spread across more than 1.6ha. Northern Thailand is the latest area around the world to suffer significant wildfires, after South Korea - currently battling its biggest on record - as well as Japan and California. While the causes of forest fires can be complex, climate change can make them more likely by creating hotter, drier weather that leaves undergrowth more prone to catching light. As well as damaging important forests, the fires are fuelling Thailand's anxieties about air pollution, which causes millions of people to need medical treatment each year. SMOG CRISIS Levels of PM2.5 pollutants - dangerous cancer-causing microparticles small enough to enter the bloodstream through the lungs - were almost 15 times the World Health Organization's recommended limit in Chiang Mai on Thursday, according to IQAir. The government banned crop burning early this year to try to improve air quality, with violators facing fines and legal action, but authorities said the measures have proven ineffective. \"There are still large numbers of farmers who continue to burn their fields,\" said Dusit Pongsapipat, head of the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Chiang Mai. Danaipat Pokavanich, a clean-air advocate involved in drafting the Clean Air Act - a bill to curb pollution in Thailand - praised the firefighting efforts but called them a \"temporary fix\". \"The law alone won't stop farmers from burning,\" he said. He recommended offering financial incentives to encourage sustainable farming practices and investing in technology to reduce the need for burning. Until then, Chatuphorn and her team remain ready to take to the skies to do their part to clean up the air by putting out forest fires. \"Flying a helicopter for disaster work is different from flying passengers,\" she said, citing limited visibility as a major challenge. She remains committed to her childhood dream. \"I just wanted to touch the cloud,\" she said, after the helicopter landed. \"Though now all I feel is just the smoke.\"",

      • "content": "You know you’re old when you have no idea who IShowSpeed is and why he is a big deal. For the old farts out there, IShowSpeed is a social media celebrity currently live-streaming (whatever that means) from Shanghai causing all kinds of handwringing — from accusations of being a paid China shill to celebrating his antics which, in effect, dances on Radio Free Asia’s grave. IShowSpeed is just the highest profile of many social media content creators who have recently made China pilgrimages. The general theme of these videos is, “Wow, lookit all the tall buildings and cool stuff in China” with the implicit (if not explicit) subtext of, “We’ve been lied to.” Chinese social media celebrities have been making a morbid mirror pilgrimage. Influencers are posting videos of JFK airport, New York City subways and San Francisco streets — and not exactly focusing on the positives. A perhaps not entirely altruistic social media influencer dispensed 100 McDonald’s hamburgers to LA’s skid row denizens. The general theme of these videos is, “Lookit the dumpster fire that is America” with the implicit (if not explicit) subtext of, “America is one giant lie.” Han Feizi is currently in Rochester, New York, which is his closest thing to a hometown. Rochester, New York, has all the elements to fill multiple “American dumpster fire” YouTube channels which, yes, is now a thing. The city that Eastman Kodak built. The city that doubled its charmed existence with Xerox Corporation. The city that once had the most PhDs per capita in all of America. In the 1970’s and 80’s, Rochester in no way played second fiddle to Silicon Valley. Resting on one’s laurels is the meanest thing that can be said of Rochester. How long did they think they could live off of film and photocopiers? To add insult to injury, Kodak and Xerox invented but failed to capitalize on much of the technology that led to their demise. Eastman Kodak engineer Steven Sasson built a digital camera in 1975. In 1983, when Steve Jobs caught wind of Microsoft’s windows and mouse-based operating system, he called in Bill Gates for a high-decibel dressing down, yelling, “I trusted you and now you’re stealing from us!” To which Bill Gates coldly responded, “Well, Steve, I think there’s more than one way of looking at it. I think it’s more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.” Of course, this is all spilled milk. And it’s old news. By the mid-aughts, Kodak and Xerox were already shells of their former selves, done in first by Japanese competition (Fuji, Canon, Ricoh etc) and then by technological obsolescence. Interestingly, China had little to do with Kodak and Xerox’s demise. Unfortunately, China was likely responsible for the demise of other manufacturing operations in Rochester from Delphi Automotive (formerly General Motors) to Bausch and Lomb. And to add insult to injury, Rochester’s most glorious export to Asia, pop star Leehom Wang, got waylaid by scandal (totally bogus). The city has been licking many wounds. Han Feizi could indulge in American dumpster fire porn and gawk at potholes, panhandlers, street walkers and abandoned buildings. But that would be pointless nihilism. Let us instead sift through the ashes and see what remains. To start off, Rochester’s Chinese American diaspora circled wagons around Leehom Wang. That is our 1600 SAT Mando-pop superstar from the best of families and we will not have his name trashed by an outlier on the crazy-hot matrix. Slowly but surely, Leehom Wang is winning back fans. Second, Nick Tahou’s survives! This 107-year-old Rochester institution was nearly done in by Covid. But Rochesterians have rallied around the Garbage Plate that has fed celebrities, executives, addicts and hookers for over a century. Yes, its contribution to global cuisine is garbage... but it’s our garbage, so suck it. But Rochester’s greatest contribution to humanity was never Kodak or Xerox. Visitors to Rochester never asked to visit Xerox’s Webster research center. What left visitors gobsmacked — every single time — was a trip to Wegmans supermarkets. I will not bore readers with written expositions; there are YouTube videos aplenty. I just want to brag a little. When Beijingers rave about Hema supermarkets, I shake my head. When Seattle residents yap about Costco, Rochesterians shrug. Whole Foods is a joke. So is Trader Joe’s. Those are mere businesses, people, not humanist institutions. The secret has since gone out. But just barely. Founded two years before Nick Tahou’s in 1916, Wegmans has expanded to just eight states with 111 stores. Whole Foods was founded in 1978 and now has over 500 locations. Costco was founded in 1983 and has 890 locations. Kroger was founded in 1883 and is an embarrassment to capitalism. The pitch deck writes itself. 111 stores? Are you kidding? Any joker on Wall Street can raise enough capital to open 500 stores. Top bankers can deliver 1,000 stores, easy. Walmart and Kroger need to be put through the paces. It would be the Wegman family’s gift to America! With an introduction to the right people, a Hong Kong IPO, I could open 1,000 Wegmans supermarkets in China. I can get Leehom Wang to perform at store openings. This can be spectacular! Rochester can forget all about Kodak and Xerox. This, of course, is not going to fly wth the Wegman family. Many a banker have had similar fantasies. The family seems to think they are running a Catholic charity as much as a supermarket chain and have some silly idea that unbridled expansion will negatively impact the mission (these are the same goody two-shoes who refuse to sell cigarettes in their stores). The only thing Wall Street can do is sit on it and hope for prodigal future generations to take the reins. Whatever. Maybe they are right. Kroger is embarrassing, after all. But they are embarrassing with 2,800 stores. The capitalist, though, is having a hard time getting over this contradiction. The US has become a dumpster fire of capitalism. Platform monopolies have enshittified the customer experience. Facebook and YouTube are chock-full of ads and just barely usable. Apple’s ecosystem and Microsoft’s network monopoly has customers by the balls. Twitter is infested with OnlyFans girls. Amazon skims off of vendors and employees; does anyone not believe customers are next? And in the midst of this blazing inferno, in the most waylaid city in America, exists this strange, strange entity of Wegmans supermarkets. Are they a beacon of capitalism? Or its antithesis? Have they provided the greatest retail experience known to mankind, or are they far underperforming their potential and, in effect, obstructing progress due to perfectionism? If all American businesses are run like Wegmans, will the economy flourish in excellence and abundance or stagnate like artisanal Japanese shops? These are unanswered questions on which Rochester’s (and perhaps America’s) future may depend. With IShowSpeed gallivanting around blinged-out Shanghai, showing the world the best China has to offer, it might be nice if Chinese influencers live-streamed a visit to Wegmans just to be polite.",

      • "content": "BEIJING: France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot urged Beijing on Thursday (Mar 27) to help bring Russia to talks over ending its war in Ukraine as he met Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. France and China have sought to boost ties in recent years, but Paris has also pressed Beijing on its relations with Moscow, which have strengthened since the invasion of Ukraine. Barrot said after meeting Wang at Beijing's ornate Diaoyutai state guesthouse on Thursday morning that they had held \"frank, constructive, and in-depth discussions\". China and France must \"coordinate to promote a just and lasting peace in Ukraine\", he said. \"China also has a role to play in convincing Russia to come to the negotiating table with serious and good-faith proposals,\" he added. Talks on Thursday also focused on economic ties, with Beijing and the European Union both facing down tariffs by the United States and a trade spat of their own. \"France opposes any form of trade war and advocates dialogue on trade issues, particularly between the European Union and China,\" Barrot said. He also said the two sides were hoping to find a \"rapid solution\" to Beijing's imposition of tariffs on EU brandy imports. Wang said in response China would \"further strengthen our strategic coordination on international and regional hotspot issues\". \"DIFFERENCES\" China says it is a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict. But it is a close political and economic ally of Russia and NATO members have branded Beijing a \"decisive enabler\" of the war, which it has never condemned. Barrot earlier acknowledged \"differences\" between Beijing and Paris on that issue and others. But, he said, \"our two countries must therefore work together to foster... dialogue\". \"Faced with political, economic, and security challenges, a new Europe is rapidly emerging. Its sole compass is strategic autonomy,\" he told Wang. \"It will be particularly vigilant in defending its interests and its values,\" he said. Wang, in turn, warned that \"the international situation has changed again, and it will be even more chaotic\". He urged the two countries to \"adhere to multilateralism\" and \"work together for world peace and development\". Barrot kicked off the day with a visit to the Beijing Language and Culture University, where he addressed students, touting the benefits of learning French and strong ties between the two countries. \"More than ever, the current context requires a powerful Franco-Chinese partnership in the service of geopolitical stability, prosperity and the future of our planet,\" he told the students. BUILDING \"TRUST\" China has said it hopes this week's visit by Barrot will see the countries deepen cooperation in a world facing \"turbulence and transformation\". It has said the two sides will discuss ways to \"jointly resist unilateralism and the resurgence of the law of the jungle\" - a veiled reference to US President Donald Trump, whose return to the White House in January has rocked the international order. Following talks with Wang, Barrot met Premier Li Qiang, China's number two official, at Beijing's imposing Great Hall of the People. \"The world is currently not peaceful, and instability and uncertainty are increasing,\" Li said. \"As two independent and responsible major countries, China and France should strengthen cooperation,\" he added. \"Through our cooperation, we should inject more certainty into bilateral relations and the world.\" He will head to economic powerhouse Shanghai, where he will inaugurate a hydrogen production plant on Friday built by the Air Liquide group and participate in a Franco-Chinese business forum. Beijing has said it will use the visit \"to consolidate political mutual trust\". Barrot's visit to China comes as part of a wider tour of Asia, including stops in Indonesia and Singapore.",

      • "content": "SAN FRANCISCO : Two former Meta artificial intelligence executives have raised $15 million for Yutori, a startup that will develop AI personal assistants, the company said on Thursday. The round was led by Rob Toews at Radical Ventures, with participation from other investors like Felicis, \"AI godmother\" Fei-Fei Li, and Google DeepMind chief scientist Jeff Dean. San Francisco-based Yutori is part of a slew of AI startups creating autonomous agents, or systems that use AI to perform actions on their own. Executives in the field such as OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar have said such systems will dominate the AI agenda this year, as models have recently gotten to the point where they can carry out the longer action sequences necessary to execute tasks online without human oversight. \"Right now there's a lot happening with chatbots, but chatbots are not doing things for you in a way that can take things off your plate,\" Yutori co-founder Devi Parikh told Reuters, saying the team has been working to redefine how users interact with autonomous AI agents, with a focus on improving efficiency for tasks ranging from online food orders to complex travel logistics. Yutori says it is focusing on post-training models to make them better at navigating the web, or adapting the base models to hone their performance in specific ways after they have already been “trained” on reams of generalized data. Post-training has emerged as a crucial step in the development of new reasoning models such as OpenAI's o1 and o3 models. Yutori's team includes Parikh, who led multimodal AI research at Meta, and Dhruv Batra, who led Meta's embodied AI research, a team developing models that robots could use to navigate the 3D physical world. Other team members include the multimodal post-training leads for Llama 3 and Llama 4, Meta's flagship open source models.",

      • "content": "LaLiga leaders Barcelona will not have a moment to catch their breath as they play Osasuna and Girona in the space of three days after a punishing international break left their players either fatigued or unavailable and manager Hansi Flick fuming. Barca and Osasuna were forced to reschedule their March 8 fixture following the death of the Catalan club's doctor and, with a busy schedule in other competitions, March 27 was the only date available straight after the international break. As 13 Barcelona players return from national team duty, Brazil's Raphinha has no time to fly back and recover for Thursday's game while several others participated in Nations League quarter-finals that went to extra time and penalties. Barca play every three days until April 15, a run of seven games in three competitions. After playing Osasuna, they host Girona on Sunday and Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals three days later following a 4-4 draw in the first leg. Barcelona and Osasuna had appeals to postpone the game rejected and Flick's side must now fulfil the fixture without key forward Raphinha, who has played every LaLiga game this season and has 27 goals and 20 assists in all competitions. Raphinha's leadership and his form have put him in the conversation for the Ballon d'Or but Flick did not mince his words when he bemoaned the fact he will not have the Brazil winger on Thursday when his side will be tested by Osasuna. Midfielder Pedri said: \"We're a little tired, but we can't forget that we're Barca. If it's decided we have to play on Thursday, we'll do it and give everything we have to win La Liga.\" Barcelona are on a seven-match winning streak in LaLiga but Osasuna were the first team to beat them this season with a stunning 4-2 victory in September. Back then Flick took the blame when his decision to rest key starters backfired but this time he has no choice but to rotate his squad with defender Pau Cubarsi also injured on Spain duty. Real Madrid will keep an eye on Barca's game on Thursday, with the two Spanish giants level on 60 points. Real's form in LaLiga has been a roller-coaster since the start of February but Carlo Ancelotti's side host Leganes on Saturday, a straightforward fixture on paper against a team battling relegation and with one win in eight games. Athletic Club, who are fourth with 52 points, will also watch Thursday's Barca match closely as they welcome Osasuna to the Metropolitano three days later in a game that was postponed to Sunday so their opponents could play the Catalans. Third-placed Atletico Madrid are four points off the pace in the title race and Diego Simeone's side cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to sustain their challenge. They lost 4-2 at home to Barcelona before the international break but will look to return to winning ways at 15th-placed Espanyol on Saturday.",

      • "content": "Bayern Munich's defence will have to be overhauled for the visit of lowly St Pauli on Saturday following injuries to Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano, with the Bundesliga leaders in need of a win to remain on course for the title. The Bavarians, who face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, have gone two games without a Bundesliga victory and their lead over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen has been cut to six points. Bayern are top with 62 while reigning champions Leverkusen are on 56. Mainz 05 are in third place with 45. The Bundesliga leaders must reshuffle their rearguard after left back Davies suffered an ACL tear to his right knee in the 12th minute of Canada's 2-1 win over the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday. The 24-year-old will miss the rest of the season in a major blow to Bayern coach Vincent Kompany's plans. Bayern will also be without Upamecano for weeks after the Frenchman finished his country's Nations League quarter-final shootout win over Croatia but picked up a knee injury. The pair are Bayern's quickest defenders and most suited to Kompany's high-pressing, quick transition game, with likely replacements Eric Dier, Josip Stanisic or Hiroki Ito lacking some of their pace. Whatever the final lineup, Bayern will look to avoid another home debacle after their 3-2 loss to visitors VfL Bochum in their most recent home game, after leading 2-0. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin before going into the international break last week. Despite their injury setbacks, Bayern will not budge from their season targets, said sports director Max Eberl. \"The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a big blow for Bayern,\" Eberl said. \"But our squad is strong enough and will make up for these absences. This will bring us even closer together. We have the quality to remain focused on all our major goals this season.\" Bayern, who are aiming to reclaim the league title after Leverkusen's domestic double-winning campaign last season, are also determined to reach the Champions League final to be played in their own Allianz Arena. Leverkusen, who needed a stoppage-time winner to overcome VfB Stuttgart 4-3 on the last matchday, will bid to keep their title hopes alive with a win over strugglers Bochum on Friday and pile more pressure on Bayern. Surprise package Mainz travel to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, with the hosts languishing in 11th place and at serious risk of missing out on next season's Champions League. Dortmund face Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final next month.",

      • "content": "SYDNEY : The crocodiles that inhabit the Fitzroy River appear not to be too much of an issue but the water current could scupper plans to stage the rowing at the 2032 Olympics in Rockhampton, some 600 kilometres north of Brisbane. The proposal to hold the rowing events in the city on the central Queensland coast were announced on Tuesday along with the final venue plan for Australia's third Olympics. Rowing Australia appear to have been blindsided by the announcement, having submitted plans for a \"2000m, 8-10 lane venue in Queensland\" to the state government's review of Games infrastructure. While the Fitzroy River is home to crocodiles, the waterway is used for rowing by schools, a local club as well as for elite training and Rowing Australia's cautious response to the announcement was focused on more technical issues. \"While the facility has been suitable in a training capacity, it has not undergone any technical feasibility study that would confirm its ability to host national or international level racing,\" the body said in a statement. \"Fairness and safety are paramount to any venue hosting a regatta of this magnitude and importance, with any river current that could impact results or favour certain lanes not permissible under the rules. \"Water quality and weed management are also factors to be considered by the International Federation.\" World Rowing, which must approve the venue, also released a statement noting the potential issues. \"World Rowing will continue to work with all key stakeholders ... to ensure a satisfactory solution is found with the integrity of the competition and safety of all athletes and officials as utmost priority,\" it read. Canoe sprint events are also slated for the river and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) was less than effusive in its response to the decision. \"It has come as a surprise to both the ICF and Paddle Australia that Rockhampton has been chosen considering the extensive examinations that had been conducted on other potential venues,\" it said in a statement. \"The ICF will continue to work with Paddle Australia, the Queensland Government and other stakeholders to assess the venue options, ensuring that the best solution is found to host sprint races at the Games in 2032.\"",

      • "content": "WASHINGTON: World powers on Thursday (May 27) blasted US President Donald Trump's steep tariffs on imports of vehicles and car parts , vowing retaliation as a widening trade war intensifies. Major car exporter Germany called for a firm response from the EU, while Japan said it \"will consider all options\". Stock markets across Asia and Europe skidded into the red as auto manufacturers from Toyota to Hyundai and Mercedes led the plunge. The US duties will take effect at 12.01am on Apr 3 and impact foreign-made cars and light trucks. Key automobile parts will also be hit within the month. \"What we're going to be doing is a 25 per cent tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States. If they're made in the United States, it is absolutely no tariff,\" Trump said at the White House. France Finance Minister Eric Lombard condemned the \"hostility\", saying that the \"only solution for the European Union will be to raise tariffs on American products in response.\" Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had convened a meeting Thursday to \"discuss our trade options\". As Washington's major trading partners warned of retaliatory action, Trump ramped up his threats. \"If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had!\" Trump posted on his TruthSocial network. But Trump's levies rattled domestic manufacturers too, with his top ally and Tesla boss Elon Musk admitting his company would not be spared the pain. \"To be clear, this will affect the price of parts in Tesla cars that come from other countries. The cost impact is not trivial,\" Musk wrote on X. The Association of American Automakers warned in a statement that the tariffs must be implemented in a way that \"avoids raising prices for consumers\" and preserves the industry's competitiveness. \"CHEATERS\" The Center for Automotive Research has previously estimated that US tariffs - including those on imported autos and metals - could increase the price of a car by thousands of dollars and weigh on the jobs market. But Peter Navarro, Trump's senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, in a briefing after Trump's announcement, blasted \"foreign trade cheaters\" who he said turned America's manufacturing sector into a \"lower wage assembly operation for foreign parts.\" He took aim at Germany and Japan for reserving the construction of higher-value parts to their countries. Since beginning his second term in January, Trump has imposed fresh tariffs on imports from major US trading partners Canada, Mexico and China - alongside a 25 per cent duty on steel and aluminium . The latest levies will be in addition to those already in place. But the White House added that vehicles entering under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can qualify for a lower rate depending on their American content. Similarly, USMCA-compliant auto parts will remain tariff-free as officials establish a process to target their non-US content. \"DEVASTATING IMPACT\" Uncertainty over Trump's trade plans and worries they could trigger a downturn have roiled financial markets, with consumer confidence also falling in recent months. Trump has defended the levies as a way to raise government revenue and revitalise American industry. But targeting imported cars could strain ties with close partners such as Japan, South Korea, Canada, Mexico and Germany. \"Imposing 25 per cent tariffs on imported cars will have a devastating impact on many of our close trading partners,\" said Wendy Cutler, vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute and a former US trade negotiator. She added that Washington has free-trade agreements with some affected parties, \"calling into question the value of US commitments\" under a trade deal. About one in two cars sold in the United States are manufactured within the country. Among imports, about half come from Mexico and Canada, with Japan, South Korea and Germany also being major suppliers. And of the US-made cars, more than half were assembled from foreign parts, said a White House official. \"LIBERATION DAY\" Besides the automobile industry, Trump is also eyeing sector-specific tariffs, such as on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber. Wednesday's announcement comes ahead of Trump's so-called \"Liberation Day\" for the world's biggest economy on Apr 2. He has promised reciprocal levies, tailored to different trading partners to remedy practices Washington deemed unfair. On Wednesday he said these duties will impact all countries. While Trump has invoked emergency economic powers for some recent tariffs, his auto levies build on a government investigation completed in 2019. The probe found that excessive imports were weakening the internal economy and might impair national security.",

      • "content": "HONG KONG: A plunge in automakers hit Asian and European equities on Thursday (Mar 27) after Donald Trump announced painful tariffs on all imported vehicles and parts as he presses hardball trade policies many fear will spark a recession. Indications that levies lined up for the president's \"Liberation Day\" on Apr 2 would be less severe than feared had given investors a little hope and helped markets chalk up much-needed gains. However, the White House's habit of alternating between tough talk and leniency has fanned uncertainty and the latest announcement did little to soothe nerves. \"What we're going to be doing is a 25 per cent tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States,\" Trump said as he signed an order in the Oval Office. The move takes effect at 12.01am Eastern time (4am GMT) on Apr 3 and affects foreign-made cars and light trucks. Key automobile parts will also be hit within the month. About half of the cars sold in the US are made within the country. Of the imported vehicles, about half come from Mexico and Canada, with Japan , South Korea and Germany also major suppliers. Japan's government called the tariffs \"extremely regrettable\", while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called it a \"direct attack\" on his country's workers. And French Finance Minister Eric Lombard warned on Thursday: \"The only solution for the European Union will be to raise tariffs on American products in response.\" There was little comfort in Trump's comments that reciprocal measures lined up for next week could be \"very lenient\". The auto news hammered carmakers in Asia. In Tokyo, Toyota - the world's top-selling carmaker - fell 2 per cent, Honda shed 2.5 per cent while Nissan was off 1.7 per cent, while Mazda dived 6 per cent. Seoul-listed Hyundai gave up more than 4 per cent. Among European auto firms, Paris-listed Renault lost nearly 2 per cent, while in Frankfurt BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes lost around 4 per cent. In Mumbai, India's Tata Motors, which exports Jaguar Land Rovers to the US, lost more than 5 per cent. US-listed car giants also tumbled with General Motors, Ford and Stellantis all deep in the red in after-hours trade. \"It's a stark reminder: Trump's not bluffing - or at least he's doing a damn good job pretending he's not,\" said SPI Asset Management's Stephen Innes. \"And if he goes full throttle with this round of tariffs - especially the reciprocal measures slated for Apr 2 - markets are staring down the barrel of the worst-case macro cocktail: faster inflation, slower growth and a fresh wave of volatility.\" The retreat in the auto sector hit broader markets, which were already shaky owing to worries over Trump's trade agenda. Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Wellington, Taipei, Bangkok and Manila all fell. London opened on the back foot along with Paris and Frankfurt. \"Within the Asia-Pacific region, the car levies will hit Japan and South Korea the hardest,\" said Stefan Angrick and Dave Chia at Moody's Analytics. \"About 6 per cent of Japan's total exports are cars shipped to the US. In South Korea's case, it's 4 per cent. Such a sizeable tariff hike will undermine confidence, hit production and reduce orders.\" Hong Kong and Shanghai eked out gains along with Singapore and Mumbai. Traders were given some cheer after Trump told reporters that he might offer to reduce tariffs on China to get Beijing's approval for the sale of popular social media platform TikTok. Trump said this month Washington was in talks with four groups interested in buying TikTok, which has been in limbo after a US law ordered it to divest from its Chinese owner ByteDance or be banned in the country owing to national security concerns. However, Beijing rebuffed the suggestion on Thursday. The broadly negative day followed losses on all three of Wall Street's main indexes ahead of the president's announcement, with the CBOE Volatility Index - or \"fear gauge\" - jumping almost 7 per cent. Market jitters were compounded by data on Tuesday showing consumer sentiment had fallen to its lowest level since 2021 as concerns about higher prices increase.",

      • "description": "The facility lets students encounter various cyberattack scenarios aboard a ship that will challenge their response strategies in real time.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Singapore has launched a training facility to defend against potential cybersecurity challenges in the maritime sector. The facility, hailed as the world’s first cyber-physical training platform, is jointly developed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The Maritime Testbed of Shipboard Operational Technology (MariOT) facility replicates a real-life environment aboard a ship, where students will encounter various cyberattack scenarios that will challenge their response strategies in real time. The mock exercises include simulated cyberattacks where assailants could intervene and change the instructions given to the system. For example, a ship set on a particular course could have its navigation system breached by attackers to deviate from its planned route, potentially causing collisions. SUTD said this hands-on approach is essential for effective learning. Professor Zhou Jianying, director of SUTD’s iTrust Centre for Research in Cyber Security, said the MariOT facility provides a realistic environment for students to learn how to detect and defend such attacks. \"That will be especially important for those students if they want to work in the maritime industry as their future career,\" said Prof Zhou. CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES IN DIGITALISATION With cyberthreats getting more advanced as the industry embraces digitalisation, the MPA highlighted the importance of being prepared. Giving workers such a venue for the hands-on experience they need to tackle these growing challenges head-on is also valuable, the statutory board said. MPA's Chief Information Security Officer Ong Chin Beng said that ships are increasingly being built with advanced digital technologies, like dual-fuel capabilities and more connected Internet of Things (IOT) systems. These innovations are good, they kind of support the shift of the maritime industry into sustainability and digitalisation,” he added. “However, this also increases cyber risk, and there lies the importance for us to train the seafarers to be able to first identify cyberthreats and then respond to it appropriately.” Ransomware continues to be the main threat to shipping companies, affecting operations and delaying delivery of goods to customers, said Mr Ong. With 80 per cent of all goods traded worldwide transferred through sea lanes, any disruption affects supply chains, he added. FUTURE-PROOFING MARITIME HUB SUTD, in partnership with MPA, will host the inaugural MariOT cybersecurity training exercise this year on Thursday (Mar 27) and Friday, marking an important step in strengthening the industry’s readiness against cyberthreats. The MPA and its partners will continue to expand MariOT’s capabilities and strengthen the development of global cybersecurity standards. Over the next three years, more than 300 students and professionals, including ship crew, cybersecurity professionals and port operators are expected to gain invaluable experience from the training, according to the MPA. Senior Minister State for Transport Amy Khor said decarbonisation, digitalisation and manpower development are the bedrock of the maritime sector’s transformation. “Future-proofing the workforce goes beyond just upskilling; in many cases, it requires strong tripartite collaboration between the unions, industry, and government to reskill our workers to navigate the green and digital transition,” she said during the Singapore Maritime Week on Tuesday. “By investing in our workforce, we can strengthen industry resilience and future-proof maritime operations, securing Singapore’s position as a trusted, technology-driven global maritime hub.”",

      • "description": "Both countries recently renewed diplomatic ties, as well as resumed direct trade for the first time in more than 50 years.",
      • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Last month, Bangladesh and Pakistan resumed direct trade with each other for the first time in decades, with Dhaka importing 50,000 tonnes of rice from Islamabad. Relations between the two South Asian nations have been fraught with tensions since 1971, when Bangladesh – previously known as East Pakistan – gained independence from Islamabad after a nine-month war. Recent political upheavals within Bangladesh, most notably the ousting of its former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last August, has led to an apparent thaw in the decades-long frost between Dhaka and Islamabad. Both sides recently renewed diplomatic ties, revived direct flight connectivity and set up high-level military and security cooperation. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also plans to visit Dhaka next month. Bangladesh on Wednesday (Mar 26) celebrated its first Independence Day since Hasina’s ousting. Experts told CNA the warming ties are an opportunity for both sides to reshape regional dynamics in South Asia. \"Anti-Hasina elements will remain in power for at least five to seven years or even 10 years,” noted Khurram Abbas, director of the India Study Centre at think tank Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad. “So, Pakistan has a five-to-seven-year-long window of opportunity to deepen its security cooperation, economic cooperation as well as political cooperation (with Bangladesh).” PIVOT AWAY FROM INDIA AND TO CHINA Following its liberation 54 years ago, Bangladesh and neighbouring India established a strong and multifaceted relationship, led mostly by Hasina who was in power for 15 years before her ouster. With Hasina's exit, the new administration in Dhaka pivoted away from India, accusing New Delhi of propping up Hasina's government – a charge India has denied. Experts said China's growing influence in the region is a key force driving Islamabad and Dhaka closer to each other. “China (plays) a major role. And being a strategic ally of Beijing, Pakistan has the opportunity to (improve) its relationship with Bangladesh’s ... political establishment,” noted Abbas. China and Bangladesh are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations this year. Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is making his first bilateral visit to China after taking charge of his country’s government last August. His Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfey Siddiqi told CNA on Wednesday that Yunus will attend a series of meetings, as well as give a keynote address at the Boao Forum for Asia 2025, which began on Tuesday and runs until Friday in the southern island province of Hainan. “There is a summit planned (with Chinese) President Xi (Jinping), leaders from the business sector, multiple actual and potential investors in Bangladesh,” said Siddiqi on the sidelines of a World Economic Forum symposium held in Hong Kong. “From an economic diplomacy point of view, it's a very exciting effect.” ECONOMIC BENEFITS Pakistan's desire to reset ties with Bangladesh comes as its own economy is struggling, with experts saying both countries are viable markets for each other. Some in India said there might be a silver lining for New Delhi too in the long run. “If relations became really good, India could actually gain – there could be transit trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh or even shipping,” said Sanjay Kathuria, visiting senior fellow at New Delhi-based public policy think tank Centre for Social and Economic Progress. “It creates wealth. It engenders more trade. You can create more value chains between the three countries,” he added. Observers said the next few years will be critical as Bangladesh and Pakistan seek to solidify their new partnership – with trade, diplomacy, and security cooperation all poised to shape the future of the region.",

      • "content": "BEIJING: The European Union should safeguard its interests and make the \"rational choice\" of turning further towards China given the uncertainty generated by the new administration in the United States, China's state-run Global Times said in an editorial. The EU's trade chief, Maros Sefcovic, is due to land in China this week after visiting the United States on Tuesday (Mar 25) to soothe ties strained this month when both sides threatened retaliatory counter tariffs on goods worth billions of dollars. On Wednesday, a day after Sefcovic's visit, US President Donald Trump said he would impose new tariffs on imported vehicles in a move that would batter European automakers, particularly German car producers, which count on the United States for almost 25 per cent of their auto exports. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the US decision was \"bad for businesses, worse for consumers,\" and that the EU would continue to seek negotiated solutions while safeguarding its economic interests. \"As the uncertainty of US policy increases, China, as a major global power, is becoming increasingly prominent for its stability and reliability,\" the Global Times, a nationalist tabloid, wrote in the editorial published late on Wednesday. Sefcovic is expected to raise concerns on the EU-China trade imbalance, as well as longstanding challenges faced by European companies operating in China, including a lack of reciprocal access to procurement opportunities, market access barriers and issues related to cross-border data transfer, according to European Union Chamber of Commerce in China President Jens Eskelund. But Sefcovic is also likely to stress \"the growing importance of strengthening EU-China relations, particularly in the context of the EU Single Market being a major export destination for Chinese goods,\" Eskelund said. Sefcovic is one of several senior European officials to visit China this week, including the foreign ministers of France and Portugal. Meeting Portugal's top diplomat on Tuesday, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing supported Europe in \"maintaining its strategic autonomy\" and would work with Portugal to improve China-Europe ties. China has also been hit with sweeping US sanctions and has announced its own countermeasures. \"Facing a rapidly changing international landscape, Europe should adopt a pragmatic approach and develop its relations with China in a more balanced way, making a rational choice to turn further towards China,\" the Global Times said.",

      • "content": "BEIJING: China rebuffed on Thursday (Mar 27) a suggestion from United States President Donald Trump that he might offer to reduce tariffs on the country to get Beijing's approval for the sale of popular social media platform TikTok. Trump said this month the US was in talks with four groups interested in acquiring TikTok , with the app facing an uncertain future in the country. A US law has ordered TikTok to divest from its Chinese owner ByteDance or be banned in the US, enacted over concerns that Beijing could exploit the video-sharing platform to spy on Americans or covertly influence US public opinion. The law took effect on Jan 19, a day before Trump's inauguration, but he quickly announced a delay that has allowed it to continue to operate. That delay is set to expire on Apr 5. Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he could give China \"a little reduction in tariffs or something to get it done\". \"We're going to have a form of a deal,\" Trump said, adding that if it was not done in time, he would extend the deadline. \"China is going to have to play a role in that, possibly in the form of an approval and I think they'll do that.\" Beijing swiftly rebuffed Trump's suggestion, with its foreign ministry saying that it has \"repeatedly stated our position\" on TikTok. \"The Chinese side's stance against imposing additional tariffs is also consistent and clear,\" foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said. \"PEOPLE'S BID FOR TIKTOK\" Trump similarly attempted to ban TikTok in the US on national security concerns during his first stint in the White House. TikTok temporarily shut down in the US in January and disappeared from app stores as the deadline for the law approached, to the dismay of millions of users. Trump suspended its implementation for two-and-a-half months after beginning his second term on Jan 20, seeking a solution with Beijing. TikTok subsequently restored service in the US and returned to the Apple and Google app stores in February. Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Perplexity recently expressed its interest in buying TikTok . Perplexity laid out in a blog post a vision for integrating its AI-powered internet search capabilities with the popular video-snippet sharing app. \"Combining Perplexity's answer engine with TikTok's extensive video library would allow us to build the best search experience in the world,\" the San Francisco-based firm said. Although TikTok does not appear overly motivated regarding the sale of the app, potential buyers include an initiative called \"The People's Bid for TikTok\", launched by real estate and sports tycoon Frank McCourt's Project Liberty initiative. Others in the running are Microsoft, Oracle and a group that includes Internet personality MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson. \"Any acquisition by a consortium of investors could in effect keep ByteDance in control of the algorithm, while any acquisition by a competitor would likely create a monopoly in the short form video and information space,\" Perplexity said in its post. \"All of society benefits when content feeds are liberated from the manipulations of foreign governments and globalist monopolists.\"",

• "description": "The foreign speaker invited was previously arrested by his own government for his purported terror links, terrorism-related activities and inciting militancy.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: A Singaporean man who allegedly invited a foreign religious speaker with terror links to preach at a Tuas migrant worker dormitory was charged on Thursday (Mar 27). Among other charges, Abdus Sattar, 51, is said to have organised a public assembly at Lantana Lodge without a police permit, according to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in a joint news release. Court documents state that the gathering was organised on Aug 9, 2024 to promote the Islamic faith. The preacher invited was Bangladeshi national Amir Hamza, who was previously arrested by his own government for his purported terror links, terrorism-related activities and inciting militancy. In August last year, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a news release that authorities had received police reports that Amir preached to a group of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Singapore on Aug 9. Investigations into Amir, the organiser of the event he preached at and other people involved were ongoing at the time. According to the ministry, Amir's sermon had propagated \"extremist and segregationist teachings that were dangerous and detrimental to Singapore’s communal harmony\". THE CASE Sattar invited Amir and another Bangladeshi national, Ullah Mohammed Neamat, to the gathering on Aug 9, said SPF and MOM on Thursday. According to court documents, Sattar also facilitated Amir's travel, provided the logistical equipment needed for the gathering and conducted promotional outreach efforts about Amir's preaching. However, he did not apply for a Miscellaneous Work Pass for Amir to deliver a talk related to religion. Amir allegedly preached to the migrant workers at the gathering while Ullah was accused of performing songs to the crowd despite Sattar not having a public entertainment licence, said SPF and MOM. Sattar was a director at the dormitory's operator, SBM Electrical & Automation, when he committed the alleged offences. Other charges he faces are for providing public entertainment without a public entertainment licence, and for abetting a foreigner to conduct activities as a religious speaker in Singapore without a work pass. If convicted of organising a public assembly without a permit, Sattar could face a fine of up to S$5,000 (US$3,700). For providing public entertainment without a licence, he could face a fine of up to S$20,000 if convicted. If found guilty of the offence he faces under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, he may face a fine of up to S$20,000, up to two years’ jail, or both. SBM Electrical & Automation was also charged for allowing a large number of foreign workers who were not residents to enter the dormitory's premises to attend the event, without maintaining proper records of their entering and leaving. Dormitory operators must, for at least one year, keep within the dormitory premises an up-to-date record of people who enter the premises if they are neither dormitory residents nor persons employed by the dormitory. Dormitory operators who contravene licence conditions may face a fine of up to S$50,000, up to one year’ jail, or both, for each contravention.",

      • "description": "After missing the start of the season through injury, Tan has found game time hard to come by. But she is determined to keep improving.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: From early setbacks to fierce competition for minutes, the road to top-flight football has not been straightforward for Singapore's Danelle Tan. After signing for the A-League Women side Brisbane Roar last year, the 20-year-old missed the start of the campaign with a knee injury that sidelined her for almost two months. Since returning to fitness, she has made just three substitute appearances and is still searching for her first goal. But the fire continues to burn strong within Tan, who said she is even more motivated to keep improving. \"It's been a bit of a whirlwind,\" she told reporters at a media roundtable on Thursday (Mar 27). \"I guess it's also because this season here (has) no winter break, so all the games come thick and fast. \"(I was) going into a good preseason, and then getting that injury - not an ideal timing for the injury ... sitting out for seven, eight games, and then struggling to find my feet again back in the squad.\" Tan, who was the first female Singaporean footballer to play in a European league, signed for Brisbane Roar last year. \"Everybody wants to play and so it's always a bit disappointing when you're not getting the game minutes you want,\" said Tan, who is now fully fit. \"This is the first time I've played in a season and the season has been cut short by the injury. \"It's been a very different season. For me, it's just more motivation that I need to keep improving. I need to keep training more and biding my time and taking my opportunities as they come.\" 'TECHNICALLY GIFTED' PLAYER A trailblazer in local women's football, Tan previously played for Germany's Borussia Dortmund in the fifth-division Landesliga, scoring 17 goals in 27 appearances during her one season there. Tan joined Dortmund in July 2023, becoming the club's first female signing from Asia. \"Every season presents its own challenges. When in Germany, I had to get used to the cold ... and learn a new language. Here, it's slightly different, maybe more challenging on the football field,\" she said. \"I wouldn't say it is the most challenging (season), I would just say it's a different kind of challenge. I embrace these challenges, I think it's where you grow the most as a player and a person as well.\" Tan is Singapore's youngest international goalscorer, having netted in her Lionesses debut as a 14-year-old at the 2019 ASEAN Football Federation Women's Championship. The goal also made her the fifth-youngest scorer in a senior women's international match. But the step up to Brisbane Roar has been significant. Tan's teammates include Australian internationals Tameka Yallop and Sharn Freier, as well as Japanese defender Momo Hayashi. Being able to train and play alongside world-class players has been a \"really good experience\" so far, she said. And to do that at Brisbane's top level facilities has also been a \"huge step\", she added. \"That's been something that's really helpful in my development - that you get a proper taste of what professional football looks and feels like,\" said Tan, who made her Roar debut in early January. \"At the end of the day, it's now become my job and that is something that has sort of changed ... The dynamics of how I view football is no longer just something I do as a passion but it's now what I do as a job. That's been a huge difference this season.\" Roar head coach Alex Smith described Tan as a \"wonderfully technically gifted\" player whose touch and finishing ability is \"probably one of the best\" on the team. \"The initial injury was very unfortunate with the timing. (I) felt like she came in preseason and was looking pretty good,\" he told reporters. \"The team was doing quite well when she returned, and she's just kind of found it hard to make her way back into the side.\" At the same time, Smith stressed that the Singaporean will need to adjust to the pace of the league. \"The speed of play is definitely faster than maybe what Danelle anticipated, or certainly what she experienced at Dortmund. So that's one thing that I've kind of flagged with her, that she needs to work on,\" he said. \"Once Danelle sort of develops that real speed and awareness when to play one-touch (football), when to play two-touch, she can thrive in a league like this. But until that happens, it's going to be tough for her. \"But she's doing everything she can to improve on on that side of things and we're trying to help her as much as we physically can as well.\" The Roar are headed to Singapore for a five-day tour in early April, and will play in an exhibition match against the best of the local Women's Premier League at Bishan Stadium. \"Growing up I would have loved to ... be able to watch a professional women's team come and play back home in Singapore,\" said Tan. \"I hope that it will be time where we inspire other girls and just be a very exciting opportunity to grow the game in Singapore, and also maybe make some new friends for Brisbane Roar back home.\" The Roar are currently sixth out of 12 teams in the league, and remain in the running to make the Final Series where the top six teams vie for the title. While it is unclear what the future holds for Tan in Australia - her deal with the Roar is till the end of this season - she stressed that she remains \"really focused\" on the rest of this season. \"I think she definitely has a future in a league like this,\" said Smith. He added that her time in the league will do Tan a \"world of good\" for her development and improvement. \"Even though she might not see it right now or might not be enjoying it fully at the moment, I do think this is going to stand her in good stead for the rest of her career.\"",

      • "description": "A High Court judge accepted that the accused's adjustment disorder had a major contributory link to his offences, but nevertheless gave it limited weight in sentencing.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: A married father of three who tried to murder his former lover's new boyfriend was sentenced to 13 years and eight months' jail by the High Court on Thursday (Mar 27), more than what both the prosecution and defence had sought. Armed with a knife, Ong Eng Siew, 64, had slashed and stabbed Mr Ku Teck Eng, then 52, the new boyfriend of his former lover, at the void deck of a Choa Chu Kang housing block on the night of Jun 21, 2021. The assault was a culmination of his increasingly aggressive behaviour towards his former lover, a woman then aged 42, whom he had abused and harassed in the lead-up to the incident. Delivering her remarks on the case, Justice Mavis Chionh said that the harm caused by Ong's attempt at murder was \"severe and significant\", with the injuries \"extremely serious\", even if Mr Ku did not appear to suffer from long-term injuries. In her decision, the judge also addressed a major contention between the defence and the prosecution - whether Ong's adjustment disorder contributed to his actions and to what extent. In an earlier hearing, Ong pleaded guilty to one charge each of attempted murder and voluntarily causing hurt, with three charges - two for hurting his former lover, and one for obstructing justice by throwing away the knife - considered for sentencing. While he admitted to the offences, Ong, represented by lawyers Eugene Thuraisingam and Ng Yuan Siang contended that his adjustment disorder was a major contributing factor. The case then entered an ancillary hearing where both sides produced psychiatrists who testified as to the impact of Ong's mental condition. The defence's psychiatrist cited stressors in Ong's life at the time, including the death of his brother in April 2021, the end of his relationship with his lover, and financial difficulties from his employer not paying his salary. The prosecution disagreed, taking the position that Ong's actions were driven by jealousy, anger and a lack of inhibition caused by alcohol consumption. In her judgment, Justice Chionh said she preferred the defence psychiatrist's evidence, finding his analysis to be \"more persuasive and cogent\". She accepted that there was a major contributory link between Ong's mental disorder and the offences. Even so, she gave limited mitigating weight to Ong's mental condition as he still retained an understanding of his actions and was able to weigh its consequences. She found that Ong's adjustment disorder was temporary and situational, and was a maladaptive response to genuine stressors in his life. His condition could not be a \"licence\" to harm others, the judge said. She also considered the aggravating factors in Ong's case, including how his assault had been \"vicious and unrelenting\" even after Mr Ku had fallen down, and his intoxication. In mitigation, Justice Chionh factored in Ong's show of remorse, through his voluntary compensation of S$2,000 (US$1,500) to Mr Ku, and the absence of violent behaviour in his past history. At the close of her judgment, Justice Chionh said that the prosecution and the defence's proposed sentences would be \"wholly inadequate\" in reflecting the \"overall criminality\" of the accused's conduct. The prosecution had called for a jail term of between 10 years, eight weeks and 12 years, 10 weeks. The defence urged the court to jail their client for between seven and eight years. HOW IT HAPPENED Ong was in a relationship with his lover from November 2019, even though he had been married with children. The woman only found out about his marriage in September 2020 and confronted him over it. But Ong lied that he was separated from his wife and would be ending his marriage. In January 2021, he began drinking heavily and gambling his salary away. The lovers began quarrelling frequently over his behaviour. She ended the relationship on Apr 25, 2021. Subsequently, the woman began dating Mr Ku, but Ong continued to harass her through text messages and calls. He threatened her with bodily harm, including pushing her off a building and stabbing her. On one occasion, on Jun 1, 2021, Ong slammed her head against a van after finding out that she was in a new relationship. The woman managed to flee and made a police report, but the harassment did not stop. On Jun 12, 2021, Ong drank beer for hours before heading to the void deck of his former lover's home at about 8.30pm, armed with a knife and more beer. When the woman and Mr Ku arrived at the void deck at about 9.25pm, Ong confronted the latter. He then took the knife from a plastic bag and approached Mr Ku with the weapon held behind his back. Shouting \"I will make sure you die\", Ong attacked Mr Ku. He punched Mr Ku who backed away and tripped over a kerb and fell backwards. While Mr Ku was on his back, Ong stabbed the left side of his chest and slashed the left side of his stomach. When the woman tried to intervene, Ong pushed her over and punched her shoulder. Mr Ku fled to a nearby provision shop for help, while Ong fled after residents in a neighbouring block shouted at him. He threw the knife in a drain and then sent voice recordings to his former lover, asking her and Mr Ku not to call the police. Mr Ku, who was conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, underwent surgery on the same day to repair the damage to the left ventricle of his heart and his small bowel region. He had a second surgery days later. The Health Sciences Authority stated that the stab wound on the left side of Mr Ku's chest, which resulted in a laceration on his left ventricle, would have been fatal but for emergency medical intervention because of blood building up in the sac around the heart. The stab wound to Mr Ku’s abdomen caused part of the bowel to protrude from his abdomen. The tears to his bowel could have been infected, resulting in Mr Ku's death if not for surgical intervention.",

      • "content": "LONDON : Yuki Tsunoda will race for Red Bull from his home Japanese Formula One Grand Prix next week with struggling New Zealander Liam Lawson demoted to sister team Racing Bulls in a straight swap. Lawson, preferred to the more experienced Tsunoda when former champions Red Bull dropped Mexican Sergio Perez at the end of last year, has yet to score as teammate of four times world champion Max Verstappen. Tsunoda started the season strongly and has shrugged off an early career reputation for being excitable and erratic. The 24-year-old has been itching for the chance to show what he can do at a top team. \"It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races and as a result we have collectively taken the decision to make an early switch,\" Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said in a statement on Thursday. \"We came into the 2025 season with two ambitions; to retain the world drivers' championship and to reclaim the world constructors' title and this is a purely sporting decision. \"We acknowledge there is a lot of work to be done with the RB21 and Yuki's experience will prove highly beneficial in helping to develop the current car,\" added the Briton. \"We welcome him to the team and are looking forward to seeing him behind the wheel of the RB21.\" Tsunoda has been backed through his career by Honda, Red Bull's engine partner until the end of this season and also owners of the Suzuka circuit that hosts the Japanese Grand Prix on April 6. Honda are switching to Aston Martin in 2026, however, and Tsunoda's future beyond this year has looked uncertain with last year's teammate Lawson promoted over him and the Japanese repeatedly snubbed. Horner had questioned the sense of keeping Tsunoda on after 2025 at Racing Bulls given that the team's main purpose is to prepare young drivers for the step up, with others in the pipeline. \"You can't have a driver in the support team for five years. You can't always be the bridesmaid. You've either got to let them go at that point or look at something different,\" Horner told reporters in December. \"I think he's very determined. He knows that things change very quickly,\" Horner added then. \"Who would have thought nine months ago that we'd be sitting here talking about Liam Lawson being our driver for 2025?\" Thursday's decision, which will be seen as brutal after just two races, added Lawson to a list of young drivers who have been found wanting and been shipped out after going up alongside Verstappen. Alex Albon, now at Williams, and Pierre Gasly, racing for Alpine, are two such drivers who have rebuilt their reputations after leaving Red Bull. Horner said after last weekend's Chinese Grand Prix that Red Bull would support Lawson as best they could and he reiterated that sentiment. \"We have a duty of care to protect and develop Liam,\" he said. \"And together we see that after such a difficult start it makes sense to act quickly so Liam can gain experience, as he continues his F1 career with... Racing Bulls, an environment and a team he knows very well.\" Lawson will join French rookie Isack Hadjar at the Italy-based team.",

      • "description": "The 130-year-old Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple - which currently occupies part of a piece of land owned by a private firm - will be relocated some 50m away on a site that will be gazetted for permanent religious use.",
      • "content": "KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday (Mar 27) hailed the planned construction of a mosque in Kuala Lumpur - named after his government's “Malaysia Madani” slogan - as a “victory” after a decade of delay, amid an ongoing controversy involving the relocation of a Hindu temple. To make way for the mosque, the 130-year-old Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple - which currently occupies part of a piece of land owned by a private firm - will be relocated some 50m away on a site that will be gazetted for permanent religious use. The proposed relocation has sparked backlash from some Hindu advocacy groups, as well as some segments of the Malay-Muslim community who argued that the temple was built illegally. “This victory, as I remind my fellow Muslims, is not borne of sheer arrogance but our willingness to display wisdom and strength of Islam,” Anwar was quoted as saying by Malay Mail at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Madani Mosque on Thursday. He added that addressing the issue in a civilised, ethical and peaceful manner reflects the Madani - or Civil Malaysia - values championed by his administration, as reported by the New Straits Times (NST). “These are Madani values - principles of compassion and kindness, not just for Muslims but for a multiracial society as a whole.” Anwar also met with the temple committee members following the groundbreaking ceremony after parties involved in the dispute reached an “amicable resolution” two days ago. “We are glad things worked out in the end,” temple committee chairman K Barthiban told Malay Mail. “He said we should all come together as a family by living harmoniously and that the government looks after the interest of all,” said Barthiban, referring to the prime minister. Local news outlets reported heavy police presence at the site of the groundbreaking ceremony at Jalan Masjid India on Thursday, with more than 100 police officers stationed as early as 8am across multiple areas. According to Astro Awani, Anwar’s presence at the ceremony, despite opposition from some quarters which he acknowledged, aligned with his earlier statement on the need to expand religious facilities to accommodate the growing Muslim population in the area. “The prayer space in mosques around the area is overcrowded. There is a need for a new place,” he said earlier on Tuesday, as quoted by The Star, in defending his decision to proceed with the groundbreaking ceremony. Anwar had also previously called on all parties not to politicise the relocation of the temple. LONG-DRAWN DISPUTE The Jalan Masjid India area is popular with tourists and home to several department stores. The area, named after the 140-year-old Tamim Muslim Mosque that anchors it, has historical importance for the Indian Muslim community in the capital city. The Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple - which was allegedly built without a land deed - sat on government land before it was sold to textile giant Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd in 2014. According to the company’s head of legal and communications Aiman Dazuki, the firm signed a land purchase agreement in 2012 to fulfil the aspirations of its late founder Mohamed Jakel Ahmad to endow the land with a mosque for the Muslim community. The temple, situated at Munsyi Abdullah Street, is located across the road from Jakel Mall - a large shopping centre owned by the textile company. “The temple is old and not legally approved, but to maintain harmony, the company (Jakel) has agreed to provide some assistance and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified a replacement site,” Anwar was previously quoted as saying by NST on Mar 21. On Tuesday, Federal Territories Minister Zaliha Mustafa said that the temple would be moved 50m away to a new 4,000 sq ft site, matching its current size, and agreed upon by its committee. It will also be gazetted for permanent religious use, according to Digital Minister Gobind Singh. Jakel Trading had bought the plot of land from DBKL in 2014, allegedly without the temple management being informed, according to Malay Mail. The temple, which currently sits on a 12,000 sq ft plot, or approximately the size of four tennis courts, occupies about one-third of the land while the rest of which functions as a carpark. In 2012, the temple applied to convert the land title to that of land reserve for a non-Muslim place of worship, but this application had failed, according to Member of Parliament for Batu P Prabakaran, as reported by Free Malaysia Today (FMT). Prabakaran is a member of Anwar’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat. When the land was sold to the textile giant, it was informed by DBKL that the temple was only there temporarily, according to the firm’s chief financial officer Syed Nasrul Fahmi Syed Al-Qadri. At a press conference last week, Syed Nasrul shared that this was stated in the land sale agreement and clarified that Jakel would not have proceeded with acquiring the land if that was not the case. While Jakel has been in talks with the temple committee to relocate the place of worship for more than a decade, the textile company assured that their relationship has been good. And in 2021, the company received permission to begin constructing a mosque at the site, but delayed the process “out of respect” for the process of relocating the temple. Jakel also had offered to pay for the relocation costs. The company also said that it was not possible to build a mosque next to the temple as the land was not large enough to fit two houses of worship, FMT reported. “UNACCEPTABLE” TO MOVE A SIGNIFICANT HERITAGE SITE The Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS), which represents the country’s two million Hindu population, had said that maintaining the temple at its current location, alongside the proposed mosque, would be the best arrangement for all parties. “Such an arrangement would demonstrate to the world Malaysia’s commitment to coexistence amidst diversity,” it said in a statement on Monday, as quoted by Malay Mail. The Hindu advisory group also refuted allegations that many Hindu temples in Malaysia have been operating illegally, proposing a special body to address land issues linked to temples across Malaysia. MHS said that it is prepared to lead the initiative with the government to safeguard the rights and heritage of the Hindu community, Malay Mail reported. According to MHS, many Hindu temples were built with the necessary approval during the British colonial era but land sales and urban development after independence had rendered the status of some temples ambiguous. South China Morning Post reported that a legislature debate in Selangor - the state with the largest Malaysian Indian population - revealed that at least 773 temples were operating without formal approval or clear land ownership. Lawyers for Liberty executive director Zaid Malek had also questioned the rush for the groundbreaking ceremony to be held. “There is an easy solution, there is no need for the temple to be demolished, there is a site next to the temple that is large enough to build a mosque. If the site is not enough, there is even space nearby for expansion,” he said at a press conference, in a video posted by Malaysiakini on Mar 22. Penang's former deputy chief minister Palanisamy Ramasamy said that it is “unacceptable” for such a significant heritage site to be forcibly moved for a new development. “The issue is not just about relocation - it is about historical preservation, religious rights and responsible governance,” he was quoted as saying by FMT on Mar 20. In a statement, the former Democratic Action Party member and current chairman of the United for the Rights of Malaysians Party had questioned why DBKL had approved the proposal to construct a mosque on the same site where the temple is located. “How did DBKL approve a mosque project on the very land where the temple stands?,” he added. “This is not just about one temple - it is about setting a precedent for how heritage and religious rights are treated in Malaysia. Hindu temples are not placed on wheels to be moved at the whims of the powerful.” In a Facebook post on Tuesday, well-known Muslim preacher Firdaus Wong claimed that the temple not only received a 4,000 sq ft plot of land for free, but also RM2 million (US$451,000) in “compensation”. Zaliha - the federal territories minister - refuted the statement.",
