\". المصدر: RT",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV on Friday (May 9) celebrated his first Mass in the Sistine Chapel where he was elected less than 24 hours earlier and prayed that his historic papacy can help the Catholic Church be a beacon illuminating \"the dark nights of this world\". Leo, the former Cardinal Robert Prevost and the first US pope , looked serene as he said the Mass in the famous, frescoed chapel with the same cardinals who chose him to be the 267th pontiff and the successor to Pope Francis. Dressed in relatively simple white and gold vestments, Leo, who was born in Chicago but spent two decades as a missionary in Peru, said a few words in English before continuing his homily in fluent Italian. He painted the spiritual picture of the Church he would like to see under his papacy. \"God has .... entrusted this treasure to me so that, with his help, I may be its faithful administrator for the sake of the entire mystical Body of the Church,\" he said. \"He has done so in order that she may be ever more fully a city set on a hill, an ark of salvation sailing through the waters of history and a beacon that illumines the dark nights of this world,\" he added, according to the official translation. The 1.4 billion-member Church, was great not because of \"the magnificence of her structures or the grandeur of her buildings ... but rather through the holiness of her members\". SWIFT APPOINTMENT Leo, aged 69, was elected at the end of a swift two-day conclave that was wrapped up on Thursday evening when white smoke billowed from the chimney on the chapel. Before his election, US cardinals had largely been written off as papal contenders because of a widespread assumption that the global Church could not be run by a superpower pope. However, he also holds Peruvian citizenship, meaning that he has deep knowledge of both the West and less developed nations. After the Mass, Leo will have lunch with the cardinals who elected him and they will then be free to leave the Vatican and return to their homes around the world. The successor to Pope Francis, who died last month at the age of 88 , inherits a number of major challenges, ranging from a budget shortfall to divisions over whether the Church should be more welcoming towards the LGBT community and divorcees, and should let women play a greater role in its affairs. US President Donald Trump was quick to congratulate Leo . However, the new pope has a history of criticising Trump and Vice President JD Vance's policies, according to posts on the X account of Robert Prevost. The new pope worked for decades in the north of Peru, first as a missionary and later as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. Catholics took to the streets of the small city in northwestern Peru, and church bells rang out to celebrate the election of a man who they embrace as one of their own. One of the clues to what kind of a Church leader Leo will be was in his choice of name, something that pontiffs often use to send a signal about the priorities of their new papacy. The last pope with this name was Leo XIII, who led the Church from 1878-1903. He was known for his devoted focus to social justice issues, and is often credited with laying the foundation for modern Catholic social teaching. Prevost became a cardinal only in 2023. He has given few media interviews and is known to have a shy personality. Francis brought him to Rome two years ago to head the Vatican office in charge of choosing which priests should serve as Catholic bishops across the globe, meaning he has had a hand in selecting many of the world's bishops.",

      • "description": "The industry is stepping up efforts to hire more skilled engineers and expanding its facilities, amid greater global appetite for air transport.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Singapore's aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sector is set for a lift, with more facilities coming onboard. With greater global appetite for air transport – the United Nations’ aviation agency expects a yearly increase of 4.3 per cent over the next two decades – the demand for MRO is expected to soar. \"There's a long queue for airlines awaiting delivery of new aircraft that they have on order,\" said Mr Sia Kheng Yok, CEO of the Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore). \"As such, some of the older aircraft – their service will have to be extended. Hence, more maintenance is needed to ensure that these aircraft remain in very good condition.\" MORE FACILITIES Bellwethers like ST Engineering are looking to do more to meet the demand, such as building additional airframe maintenance hangers in Singapore and abroad. \"We plan to open a new engine shop later this year so that we have more capacity for engine overhaul,\" said Mr Jeffrey Lam, president of commercial aerospace at ST Engineering. The facility will provide MRO services for the LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines that power narrow-body aircraft, including the new generation Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. It is expected to provide 200 engine shop visit capacity annually. The company said these additions will boost its man-hours in Singapore by a third next year – to over 4 million annually. \"We're hiring more people – in Singapore in particular – so that we can grow the amount of services that we can offer to our global customers,\" Mr Lam said. The firm wants to add up to 500 staff to its headcount in the next one to two years, with engineer and technician roles certified in avionics and landing gear among the skill demands, added Mr Lam. STRONG AVIATION SECTOR Singapore contributes about 10 per cent of current global MRO output, making it a leading hub in Asia. Industry players believe the nation is well-positioned to leverage the growth. “For a small country like Singapore, 10 per cent of global market share is very significant,” said Mr Sia, pointing out the aviation sector has recovered well since the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2022 and 2024, Singapore bagged over S$750 million in investment commitments from aerospace companies. Last year, Changi Airport handled almost 68 million passengers , which is 99 per cent of pre-pandemic levels. National carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its low-cost arm Scoot flew 39 million passengers the same year, 12.7 per cent more than in 2023. “Singapore has historically been able to attract very high-quality aviation and MRO players to base their facilities here,” said Mr Joshua Ng, director of Alton Aviation Consultancy. “We think that Singapore is one of the few countries that are poised to tap on this growing demand in the MRO sector.” MANPOWER SHORTAGE However, industry players said ongoing manpower constraints could ground growth. “MRO capacity is quite limited, and at the same time, the supply chain is highly constrained and talent is in short supply,” said Mr Sia. “Fortunately, during the pandemic, we were able to maintain a good proportion of our workforce, which allowed us to ramp up to capture the surge in demand.” He added that challenges remain in ensuring that enough people can access opportunities in aerospace, as well as in upskilling and cross-skilling the existing workforce. Currently, efforts to build a talent pipeline include partnerships with educational institutes and career fairs. ROLE OF AI IN MRO Market watchers said artificial intelligence could help to address the staffing shortages by helping mechanics and engineers with routine and tedious work. AI is driving transformation in the sector, allowing jobs to evolve to provide higher value products and services. “In the past, repairs will only be done when defects are found. (AI will make the process) more proactive and more service oriented... leveraging data to predict whether maintenance (should) happen,” said Mr Ng. AI makes it possible to predict failures before they occur, by monitoring performance data and identifying patterns of degradation, to avoid situations where planes cannot fly due to faulty parts, he added. “The role of the human now will be more in terms of sense-making, interpreting the data... doing final quality checks, repairs and sign-offs to make sure that everything is in order for the aircraft to fly,” he explained. With Terminal 5 on the horizon, Mr Ng said Singapore's MRO sector is ready to reach new altitudes, cementing its status as a global air hub.",

      • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's foreign ministry spokesman said on Friday (May 9) that India was to blame for bringing the two nuclear-armed neighbours closer to war. \"It is most unfortunate that India's reckless conduct has brought the two nuclear-armed states closer to a major conflict,\" Shafqat Ali Khan said in a press briefing in the capital Islamabad. \"India's jingoism and war hysteria should be a source of serious concern for the world.\" Separately five civilians were killed in Indian shelling overnight in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a Pakistani government official said on Friday, after days of exchanges between neighbours. The deaths were reported in areas near the heavily militarised border known as the Line of Control that separates the Kashmir region between India and Pakistan. \"Indian forces shelled civilian areas ... resulting in the deaths of four people, including a two-year-old girl and injuring 12 others,\" police official Adeel Khan, based in Kotli district, told the AFP, adding that the shelling continued late into the night. \"In response, the Pakistan Army carried out a strong counterattack, targeting three Indian posts across the Line of Control (LoC).\" In Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a senior government official who asked not to be named confirmed the deaths in Kotli and added a fifth person was killed in Bagh district. A security official based in Muzaffarabad, who asked not to be named, told AFP: \"A mortar shell fired by Indian forces struck a civilian home in Bagh, resulting in the death of a young man and injuries to his two sisters. The escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals follows an attack on tourists in the Indian-run part of disputed Kashmir that killed 26 people on Apr 22 and Indian air strikes on \"terrorist camps\" on Wednesday. Pakistan has rejected claims by India's government that it was behind last month's attack, calling for an independent investigation. Pakistani authorities insist they have the right to retaliate to India's initial strikes. Pakistani military sources said that its military had shot down 77 Indian drones in the last two days, claiming they were Israeli-made. In a late Wednesday TV address to the nation, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned they would \"avenge\" those killed by Indian air strikes . The Indian army said on Friday that Pakistani troops had resorted to \"numerous cease fire violations\" along the countries' de-facto border in Kashmir, a region that is divided between them but claimed in full by both. \"The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs (ceasefire violations),\" the army said, adding all \"nefarious designs\" would be responded to with \"force\". Pakistan Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the Indian army statement was \"baseless and misleading\", and that Pakistan had not undertaken any \"offensive actions\" targeting areas within Indian Kashmir or beyond the country's border. The International Crisis Group said \"foreign powers appear to have been somewhat indifferent\" to the prospect of war, despite warnings of possible escalation. \"A combination of bellicose rhetoric, domestic agitation and the remorseless logic of military one-upmanship have heightened the risks of escalation, particularly because for some time there was no diplomatic communication between the sides,\" it said. Amnesty said the warring sides \"must take all necessary measures to protect civilians and minimise any suffering and casualties\". The relationship between Hindu-majority India and Islamic Pakistan has been fraught with tension since they became separate countries after attaining independence from colonial British rule in 1947. Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, has been at the heart of the hostility and they have fought two of their three wars over the region.",

      • "content": "TOKYO — This week, US President Donald Trump subjected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to an Oval Office economics lesson. It did not go well. There Trump was, telling a former central banker who studied at Harvard and Oxford that America’s annual with Canada is really a “subsidy.” That deeply confused — Say, what?!?!? — look on Carney’s face as Trump talked gibberish is all of us, but especially Chinese officials who are about to be subject to Team Trump in trade talks this weekend. As discussions begin in Geneva, Switzerland on Saturday, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng will try to do his best , keeping a straight face as Trump’s emissaries do their best to translate Trump’s rather baroque grasp of trade. He is an interesting sparring partner for US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. A longtime political ally of President Xi Jinping, He even attended the Chinese leader’s 1987 wedding. As a former deputy mayor of the port city of Xiamen, He innately understands the mechanics of China’s state-centric economic model — and what the US-China trade deficit is and what it isn’t. Bloomberg on Friday that the US side may be willing to reduce tariffs, now set at a cartoonishly high 145%, to below 60% to de-escalate tensions and ease the economic pain both sides are beginning to feel. China’s tariffs on US goods are currently set at 125%. The US side will also reportedly press China to ease export restrictions on rare earth minerals used in various sensitive industries. Trump said he believed the weekend talks might result in tangible progress, with China agreeing to make concessions. Most analysts consider this weekend more of a “touch gloves moment” than a formal on-the-clock trade deliberation. Yet this negotiation on the negotiations to come — rules of the game, logistics, definitions, etc. — will be closely watched by markets. The same goes for world leaders dreading their own moment in the Trumpian glare. Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro’s claim that the US would sign 90 trade deals in 90 days is now a punchline. Ditto for Trump’s farcical I-already-have-200-trade-deals-done claim and talk of “ .” Sensitive to the level of global eye-rolling, Trump sought to rush one of these sub-deals to the altar – with the UK. This, too, did not go well. Anyone who thinks Trump just scored a notable increase in access to Britain’s economy hasn’t read the details, or lack thereof. If Trump really got the better of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, why is the American Automotive Policy Council already pushing back so hard? Trump’s handiwork here “hurts American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers,” says the group’s president Matt Blunt. In fact, AAPC argues, Trump is getting bamboozled into giving UK vehicles “preferential access” to the US market, not vice versa. Suffice to say, Bessent and Greer have quite a balancing act to pull off: translating Trump’s warped views on trade dynamics to a group of old-school policymakers who know better. China, for example, has not shied away from publicly calling Trump out for misstatements about communications between Washington and Beijing. Trump claimed to receive phone calls from Xi that Beijing says didn’t happen. , under oath in a Congressional hearing, had to refute Trump’s claims that the US and China were already conducting negotiations. It means that the first thing Trump conceded in these talks is basic trust. If you are the leaders of Japan, Singapore, South Korea or Taiwan, awaiting their turn in Carney’s shoes in the Oval Office, you’re going into US negotiations with great skepticism. From Trump 1.0, world leaders learned that Trump trade talks aren’t negotiations so much as moments to extort allies and foes alike. For Xi’s part, China will go in pledging to do what the Communist Party has been attempting for years: step up domestic consumption. The challenge for He is making the case that China shifting away from exports to a domestic demand-led model is a win-win for the global economy. More Chinese demand for Apple’s phones, Nike’s shoes, Ford’s cars, Hasbro’s toys, General Electric’s appliances and Hollywood’s entertainment is great for the US economy. But, as He must try to explain, Trump’s tariff actions will only reduce the wherewithal of 1.4 billion to buy overseas goods. The same goes for China’s ability to switch economic engines in mid-flight, a huge challenge even in the most stable of environments. also should have a prominent place on Bessent’s mental pros and cons list. In using tariffs to bring China to the table, Trump World risks tipping Asia’s biggest economy into a falling-price cycle. Thankfully, China’s experience with deflation has been mild relative to Japan’s in the 1990s. But this weekend, as Bessent and He size each other up, Beijing is scheduled to release data showing factory-gate prices are now down 31 consecutive months. And that consumer prices fell for a third straight month. Exacerbating China’s deflation risks in 2025 is not in America’s economic interest. Nor that of the broader Group of Seven nations. “If the US wants to resolve the issue through negotiation, it must face the serious negative impact of unilateral tariff measures on itself and the world,” warns China’s commerce ministry. There’s an argument, too, that Trump needs a trade deal more than Xi. Arguably, the only way Trump can live down anger among American households over tariffs — to have even a fleeting chance to argue the end justifies the means – is striking a China deal. Xi’s party, meanwhile, doesn’t have to contest mid-term elections in late 2026. Trump also blinked first, remember. He backtracked on “reciprocal” tariffs with most countries rather quickly. Trump has offered carve-outs for more companies, including Apple, and industries than economists can count. Greer, himself, has warned that a trade deal that gets watered down can be ” and “undermine” the impact. Trump 2.0 is doing just that in real time. Also, Chinese trade data released Friday could give He something of a spring in his step arriving in Geneva. Though exports to the US dropped a precipitous 21% in April year on year, overall shipments managed to rise a greater-than-expected 8.1%. It was a clear sign that Chinese companies are succeeding in efforts to increase sales in other markets to compensate for falling US sales. Bessent’s team at the US Treasury is also paying very close attention to Beijing’s currency reserve holdings. Last week, Japan’s Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato made waves in markets by saying Tokyo’s US$1.1 trillion of US Treasury holdings “does exist as a card” to play in trade talks. This has US officials worried China might be even more inclined to use its own US$760 billion as leverage versus Trump World. The shockwaves that any move to dump Treasuries would cause everywhere have Asia on edge. “We suspect these dollar hoardings by Asian exporters and institutional investors may be extremely large – possibly on the order of $2.5 trillion or so – and pose sharp downside risks to the dollar vis-à-vis these Asian currencies,” Eurizon SLJ Capital economists Stephen Jen and Joana Freire write in a note. Only Xi knows if Beijing would take things that far. But the ways in which Trump has conducted himself vis-à-vis China have enabled Xi to rally the support of many average Chinese. “We believe Beijing views these US trade actions as nothing short of a declaration of ,” BCA Research analysts argue in a note. That could buy Xi a lot of goodwill with the Chinese masses. Yet, wildcards abound. Over the last six months, the Freedom House’s China Dissent Monitor has detected statistically significant increases in in-person protest activity. Grievances, often over unpaid wages, are reportedly bubbling up in factories around the nation. Nomura Holdings economists warn that Trump’s tariffs could erase as many as 15.8 million mainland jobs. Goldman Sachs says makers of apparel, communications equipment and chemical products are uniquely vulnerable. Goldman says that as many as 20 million mainland jobs are directly dependent on US-bound shipments. The market chaos is hitting developing economies everywhere. “Portfolio flows to emerging markets came to a standstill in April, with the first month of the second quarter marked by the sharpest regime shift in trade policy in over a decade,” says Jonathan Fortun, economist at the Institute of International Economics. Total non-resident flows registered a marginal net outflow of $200 million, a dramatic reversal from the US$37.5 billion in net inflows recorded in March. The data, Fortun says, “underline the significance” of the Trump administration’s April 2 “Liberation Day” tariff announcement, “which triggered a meaningful repricing of global risk and a sharp increase in flow volatility across emerging-market assets.” Given the turmoil in global markets, the got out ahead of this week’s trade talks with rate cuts. Other authorities, including the National Financial Regulatory Administration and China Securities Regulatory Commission, announced 21 different support measures targeting the property sector, stock market, technology sector, exporters and domestic consumption. In addition to cutting official rates, PBOC added liquidity by reducing the reserve requirement ratio for big banks by 50 basis points to 9%. That, says Carlos Casanova, senior Asia economist at Union Bancaire Privee, released roughly one trillion yuan ($237 billion) of fresh liquidity, equivalent to about 0.7% of GDP, into the economy. “While the market from the PBOC, including dual interest and RRR cuts, the proactive timing and detailed nature of the measures were surprising,” Casanova says. “Overall, this move is promising, indicating the government’s readiness to deploy stimulus even before definitive data confirms a growth slowdown.” Others think the PBOC might have to act more aggressively to dispel deflation fears. Research firm Capital Economics called Wednesday’s rate cuts “positive but modest.” Some worry that China’s April data might provide a false sense of confidence that its 5.4% growth in the first quarter is sustainable without additional support efforts. “The damage of the US tariffs has not shown up in the trade data in April,” says economist Zhiwei Zhang, president of Pinpoint Asset Management. Yet Trump’s trade war has been a comedy of errors — and not just him telling an economist in the Oval Office that up is down and black is white. The fact that the US contracted in the first quarter while China beat growth expectations suggests Trump has got his economics wrong. Just another reason why China may very well run circles around Trump World in the talks about talks and negotiations to come.",

      • "description": "The new pontiff, who was chosen as leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday (May 8), has travelled extensively in Asia where observers said he is seen as a “very appealing figure”.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The new head of the Catholic Church looks set to continue his predecessor’s legacy and focus on championing peace amid ongoing global conflicts, said observers. Robert Francis Prevost, who picked Leo XIV as his papal name , will lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics after being chosen by a conclave comprising cardinals from 70 nations. He is the first pope from the United States. Originally from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru and became a cardinal only in 2023. In the 69-year-old’s first speech as pontiff on Thursday (May 8), which he delivered in Italian and Spanish, he wished the world “peace be with you” and implored people to “build bridges through dialogue”. Dr Ruben Mendoza, associate professor of theology at Ateneo De Manila University, described his speech as “significant”, noting how the new pope also referred to the late Pope Francis’ Easter message . Pope Francis had called for an end to wars and conflicts in the world, including in Gaza and Ukraine. “Peace actually is one of the themes of the Catholic social tradition,” said Dr Mendoza. “So, perhaps we can expect from him (Pope Leo XIV) to focus on that particular area and to further develop the Catholic social teaching in that area.” CONTINUITY WITH POPE FRANCIS Experts said the cardinals’ pick showed they wished for continuity with Pope Francis – a progressive who opened the door to conversations on many long-standing and often contentious issues during his 12-year papacy. These included his landmark approval in 2023 for Catholic priests to offer blessings to same-sex couples. Dr Mendoza noted how Pope Leo XIV had said “we want to be a synodal church”, which was a focus of Pope Francis. “That’s sounding, I think, (to be) a very positive continuation of the programme of Pope Francis,” he told CNA’s Asia First programme. “When we speak of synodality, this would mean talking to all peoples, listening to all peoples, engaging in dialogue ... listening to people who have been traditionally marginalised by the Catholic Church. That would include members of the LGBTQ community,” he added. Dr Mendoza said the world can expect the church to continue reaching out to such groups to ensure they feel they are part of the church. Dr Paul Michael Hedges, professor of interreligious studies at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, noted that Pope Leo XIV is among 80 per cent of current cardinals who were appointed by Pope Francis himself. “Pope Francis was very inclusive, picking cardinals from many different factions within the church,” he added. Pope Leo XIV’s age – relatively young for a pontiff – also means the church expects him to be pope for a long time, Dr Hedges told CNA’s Asia Now programme. “Sometimes, after you've had a pontiff in place for quite some time – particularly somebody like Francis, who has made some changes in direction in how he presented the church – they will often go for somebody, perhaps sort of an older, an interim person, to balance the boat,” he added. “But with this new young person, he's clearly there to continue this legacy.” MORE MODERATE THAN POPE FRANCIS Dr Hedges described the new pontiff as a “slightly more moderate figure” than Pope Francis and a “conservative figure in many ways”, but one who has greater appeal across the church. The professor pointed out how Pope Leo XIV is an expert in canon law – a code of ecclesiastical laws governing the Catholic Church. He earned a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome. “He’s also been sort of welcomed into the LGBTQ community, and the conservative side of the church in places like Africa. This will be seen as something positive,” Dr Hedges said. However, he said Pope Leo XIV has been “quite quiet” on matters like the Russia-Ukraine and Gaza wars, which Pope Francis has spoken out strongly about. “Whether it becomes something he speaks about more is an issue,” he added. As for the new pope’s choice of papal name, the experts said the significance lies in how the previous Leo – Leo XIII, who was pope between 1879 and 1903 – was a determined defender of workers’ rights. Dr Mendoza pointed out that Pope Leo XIII issued the first social encyclical in the Catholic Church in 1981, where he addressed the rights of workers and capitalism at the dawn of the industrial age. “Assuming he had Leo XIII in mind, it would seem that the Catholic social tradition would be the emphasis of Pope Leo XIV,” Dr Mendoza added. APPEAL IN ASIA The new pontiff has connections to both the global north and global south, including Asia – particularly Southeast Asia – where he is “quite well-known”, said Dr Hedges. He was head of the Augustinian religious order from 2001 to 2013, which operates in 50 countries and has a focus on a life of community and equality among its members. “He travelled through the whole world. He’s been several times to the Philippines. He’s been to Taiwan, to Vietnam, to India, to many places across Asia, and that means he’s got a network, that people know him and like him,” Dr Hedges noted. “Of course, they find him a very appealing figure.” Pope Leo XIV also has a good working relationship with Asian cardinals like Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines, who was a frontrunner to become pope. \"It will be reassuring for the church in Asia, which is now one of the largest-growing parts of the Catholic Church, that somebody who is coming in really understands what’s (happening in these parts),\" Dr Hedges added.",

      • "description": "Before this, only the meningococcal vaccination was required of Haj pilgrims from Singapore.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: All Singapore Haj pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia in June are required to be vaccinated for influenza and COVID-19, in addition to the mandatory meningococcal shot. This comes after the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) updated its vaccination requirements, in consultation with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). \"This is to safeguard Haj pilgrims' health throughout their journey and better protect them from infections while overseas,\" said MOH and CDA in a joint news release on Friday (May 9). For the COVID-19 vaccination requirement, pilgrims must show proof of \"either a single dose of the updated vaccine for the 2024-2025 season, completion of primary vaccination series, or laboratory-confirmed recovery from a COVID-19 infection during the year 2024\". Under the influenza vaccination requirement, pilgrims must receive the jab within 12 months before their travel date. Those who have received the meningococcal vaccination must have completed it at least 10 days before departure. Pilgrims must provide proof of the respective vaccinations. MOH and CDA said that MUIS had earlier informed pilgrims about the updated vaccination requirements via Haj collaterals so that they have time to arrange for the jabs. The authorities also recommended that pilgrims ensure they are up-to-date with other national recommended vaccinations listed in the National Adult Immunisation Schedule and National Childhood Immunisation Schedule. For instance, elderly and medically vulnerable pilgrims should take the pneumococcal vaccine before their trip, they said. The recommendations also apply to pilgrims from Singapore who plan to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah pilgrimages, added MOH and CDA. In planning for a safe pilgrimage, the authorities advised pilgrims to consult their healthcare provider four to six weeks before travelling, about any vaccinations and preventive medications they should get. Pilgrims are also recommended to have both their physical vaccination certificates and digital vaccination records via the HealthHub app ready for border checks in Saudi Arabia. Previously, only the meningococcal vaccine was required for the 2024 Haj and Umrah pilgrimages, with influenza and COVID-19 jabs under the recommended vaccinations list, according to MOH's health advisory then. MUIS has issued letters of offer to 900 pilgrims for the Haj 2025 pilgrimage.",

      • "description": "US and Chinese officials meet in Switzerland this weekend for talks over the tariff war between them. Analysts say expectations are low and symbolism outweighs substance.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: From Washington and Beijing, planes carrying senior leaders and trade officials are en route to one negotiating table in Switzerland - but who has the upper hand? The imbalance in negotiating power is already clear, analysts said, as US and Chinese officials convene in Switzerland this weekend for their first face-to-face trade talks since President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs took effect. The meetings, scheduled for Saturday (May 10) and Sunday, will be led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. On Beijing’s side, Vice Premier He Lifeng will represent the government. Despite its own domestic economic strain, China enters the talks with firmer demands, a unified message, and greater strategic patience, according to observers. The United States, by contrast, has tempered expectations and downplayed the prospects of a deal. “China does have the upper hand because the US is reaching out,” said Wang Dan, China director at Eurasia Group. “The trigger for (the talks) is mainly the domestic condition of the US. People have anticipated some hardships, but nobody expected this type of turbulence in the market.” To be sure, both China and the US are “feeling real economic pain from these outlandishly high tariffs”, said Dexter Tiff Roberts, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub. The US faces the threat of empty store shelves and higher consumer prices, while China grapples with a loss of export-related jobs. “I do think, though, that the tolerance for pain is higher in China ... the whole ability to ‘eat bitterness’,” said Roberts, referring to the Chinese saying “chi ku”, which means to “eat bitterness” or to endure hardship. A HARDER LINE FROM BEIJING The US has made clear that the talks are not expected to yield a breakthrough, with Bessent describing them as a first step toward outlining topics for future negotiations. “My sense is that this will be about de-escalation, not about the big trade deal,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. “We’ve got to de-escalate before we can move forward.” Beijing, meanwhile, has taken a markedly different tone. China’s commerce ministry issued a statement ahead of the talks insisting the US “must face up to the serious negative impact of unilateral tariff measures on itself and the world.” It warned that China “will never agree” to any outcome based on “coercion and blackmail”. The message from Beijing has been consistent: without significant tariff relief, there will be no substantive negotiation. “I don’t think it’s a tactic,” said Wang. “It’s essentially a safe play for Beijing, because Trump is unpredictable. Even if something is agreed privately ... there still can be changes when it comes to the official talks.” “So China is very much aware of that, and (President) Xi wants to control the situation.” Roberts noted that Chinese officials had previously denied US claims that negotiations were underway . “Trump and his people repeatedly said talks were happening when apparently they were not,” he said. “I think they thought saying that would be a strategy to make talks happen sooner.” “The US is the one that comes into this feeling a little more desperate ... I think there was a misperception that China would somehow be more of a pushover and more desperate to come to the talks. And I don't think that's what's happened.” Xu Jianwei, senior economist for Greater China at Natixis, noted that any US move to reduce tariffs would carry political risk. “Rolling back tariffs too much would inevitably invite an uncomfortable question for the US: what was the point of the confrontation if it led us back to square one?” he said. POLICY DIVERGENCE, ECONOMIC STRAIN The talks come amid growing economic strain in both countries. Trump’s tariff package imposed a 10 per cent blanket duty on virtually all imports, on top of existing 25 per cent tariffs on steel, aluminium, automobiles, and parts. Since January, he has also raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 per cent, prompting Beijing to hit back with 125 per cent on US exports. In China, up to 16 million export-related jobs could be at risk under the current US tariffs, according to estimates by Goldman Sachs analysts. These include factory workers whose jobs have been jeopardised by stalled operations and cancelled orders. In the US, many businesses have warned of disrupted supply chains and looming shortages. In fact, CEOs of major retailers - including Walmart and Target - have reportedly told the White House that inventories are shrinking and price increases are imminent. Even Trump has acknowledged that “at some point” the tariffs may need to come down. “Otherwise you could never do business with them,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press last week. Against this backdrop, the UK and US announced a “breakthrough deal” to reduce some tariffs - the Trump administration’s first bilateral deal since the tariff onslaught. Markets responded enthusiastically : on Thursday, the S&P 500 rose 0.6 per cent, the Dow gained 0.6 per cent and the Nasdaq climbed 1.1 per cent. Trump hinted that tariffs on China could be lowered if the Switzerland talks made progress. “We’re going to see. Right now you can't get any higher. It's at 145 per cent so we know it's coming down,” Trump said. According to analysts, recent stock market volatility and mixed inflation signals are increasing pressure on Washington to ease tensions - while Beijing watches closely. “China wants to see what the US can offer,” said Roberts. Wang added that the consequences are playing out differently in each country. “There’s more of the economic cost to China,” she said. “For the US, it’s a more political cost.” “(The) Chinese people and Chinese businesses are used to this kind of policy uncertainty ... I think the pain might - on the surface - be more visible for US consumers, but for China, it's real welfare loss.” Meanwhile, China’s central bank on Wednesday cut the required reserve ratio by 0.5 percentage points and trimmed the seven-day reverse repo rate by 0.1 percentage points - moves aimed at increasing liquidity while keeping broader policy restrained. According to Wang, these adjustments are not signs of panic. “It’s not in a hurry to come out with aggressive rate cuts or monetary easing,” Wang said. “All those messages coming out from (the central bank announcements) are in line with a long term goal. It’s still (about) the technology upgrade, building up the capital market to serve the real economy.” Roberts said the policy shift was timed to strengthen Beijing’s negotiating posture. “This was clearly preparation for trade talks. They're trying to put a little support under a weak economy, and that does give them ultimately more leverage to walk away. They're not gonna be pushovers. There's no way.” China’s leaders have insisted that they remain confident of hitting this year’s GDP growth target. On May 5, during a meeting of financial officials in Milan, Finance Minister Lan Fo’an reiterated that “China will adopt more proactive and robust macroeconomic policies and is confident of achieving the growth target of ‘around 5 per cent’ for 2025”. Yet the government has so far resisted a major stimulus, focusing instead on long-term goals like tech self-sufficiency and financial system reform. “These are relatively minor adjustments,” said Daryl Guppy, an Australian financial columnist and CEO of Guppytraders.com, “although it suits Western observers to interpret them as something significant because this allows the US to claim their tariff attack has worked”. “THEY’VE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS” Beijing’s leverage in the talks stems from years of preparation, analysts said. China has shifted to reduce reliance on the US market, cultivating deeper ties with the Global South and investing in infrastructure through the Belt and Road Initiative. “The US is far more dependent on China across its supply chain,” said Guppy. “China has replacement markets ... The US is increasingly vulnerable because it cannot quickly substitute China imports.” Guppy argued that Trump’s team is operating on outdated assumptions. “They are thinking of China pre-COVID,” he said. “(They) do not understand the tremendous economic restructure with the digital economy that has taken place since then.” Roberts noted that China has not been idle in preparing for worsening ties with Washington. “China hasn’t been static, they’ve been preparing for this.” “They already dealt with Trump 1.0, and they already had a trade war on a much smaller level with Trump in the first round,” he added. China's exports rose faster than expected in April, growing 8.1 per cent year-on-year, according to customs data released on Friday . However, China's exports to the US fell 17.6 per cent compared to the previous month. According to the US commerce department on May 6, imports from China were the lowest in five years and could drop further, given reports of a massive decline in cargo from China . In the first quarter of 2025, ASEAN overtook the US as China’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $234.2 billion - 16.6 per cent of China’s overall foreign trade - a 7.1 percent year-on-year rise. WHAT’S ON THE TABLE? Analysts said the mere fact that talks are happening marks a “breakthrough”. Whether that leads to meaningful progress depends on what the US is willing to offer - and how Beijing responds. Roberts said a tariff reduction remains likely - a necessary first step before further negotiations can begin. “Obviously, the first thing they can do is reduce the tariffs, and that's what they'll do. We'll see the tariffs come down. That's the first part of any deal.” “It might not happen on Saturday, but I think it's likely that we're gonna see that happen soon,” he added. Wang is more sceptical. “I think we all have very low expectations,” she said. “No concrete results are expected from this meeting ... if there are no real concessions from the US then this talk is nothing.” China wants the US to remove the tariffs, said Wang. “Otherwise, it's a lack of sincerity from China's point of view.” Symbolic progress could take the form of extended dialogue or modest tariff rollbacks. Roberts noted that even small adjustments may allow both governments to save face. “China might be like we haven't gotten far enough, but we're moving in the right direction,” he said. “Trump could say ... ‘Can you believe how they caved?’” Wang said more technical wins are possible. “If somehow the US is able to offer some concrete measures, then maybe we're looking at some small deals that involve a currency or export quota ... it can be a win on both sides,” she said. Taiwan could even surface in the talks as part of a broader negotiation, if Washington offers deeper concessions. “China really wants the US to potentially to somehow reframe their commitment to Taiwan, to give Beijing more power, more leverage over Taiwan,” said Roberts. “I think there's a possibility that the Trump administration could do that as well.” According to analysts, truly substantive outcomes - such as easing tech export restrictions, formal mechanisms to stabilise the yuan, or commitments on intellectual property - are far less likely in the near term. “Over the long term, the direction of US-China decoupling is clear,” said Natixis’ Xu. “But both China and the US will carefully weigh the economic costs before taking each step forward. Without real progress in trade negotiations, both sides will suffer: China will lose export-related jobs, while the US will face higher consumer prices.” While both sides face serious economic constraints, analysts said China appears in no rush to arrange a meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Trump. “It’s the last thing China wants to do, to put Xi Jinping in a humiliating position,” said Wang, referencing Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that ended in a shouting match . “They would rather endure trade war for much longer.” “I think the US is more supplicant now than China,” Roberts said. “And China has the leverage, but no one's gonna admit to that in Washington.” Guppy contrasted the two leaders’ negotiating styles: “The Art of the Deal is no match for Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.”",

Hyun-joong, who lives by the motto \"Our bodies tell our life stories,\" is determined to help Mi-ran regain her confidence and strength, both physically and emotionally. As Mi-ran embarks on her fitness journey, she faces the challenges of rigorous training and self-doubt. Under Hyun-joong's strict yet caring guidance, she begins to see changes in herself, leading to a blossoming romance between the two. Well, Lee Jun-young’s Hyun-joong has changed the phrase to ‘What the fat’ in the K-drama to express his disgust for unhealthy fats. And surprisingly, the internet is loving it.

      • "content": "Lenovo has added another high-end laptop to its portfolio, the 10th-gen Lenovo Legion 9i. The laptop was unveiled at the Lenovo Tech World event in Shanghai. This 18-inch powerhouse is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU, up to 192GB of RAM, and 8TB of SSD storage. The 10th-gen Lenovo Legion 9i features a 4K panel and comes in both 2D and 3D variants. The 3D display model is designed with built-in eye tracking and a lenticular lens array, enabling glass-free 3D viewing and gaming via Lenovo's proprietary Lenovo 3D Studio software. Lenovo claims users will be able to enjoy 30 supported 3D games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth: Wukong, Forza Horizon 5, Genshin Impact, and God of War Ragnarok. The Lenovo Legion 9i = your entire studio, minus the desk. Built for game devs, VFX artists, and 3D creators who need serious power that keeps up — wherever work takes them. Even more intriguing is the unique lid pattern, which the company states is distinct to each 10th-gen Lenovo Legion 9i. When it comes to hardware, this laptop is top-notch. Regardless of whether you opt for the 2D or 3D model, you get a 4K panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, which can be boosted to 440Hz at 1080p resolution. Additionally, there are four empty slots that allow users to upgrade RAM or SSD storage. The Lenovo Legion 9i offers a wide range of port options, including two Thunderbolt 5 ports, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (three Type-A and one Type-C), an Ethernet port, HDMI 3.1, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For wireless connectivity, it features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support. Currently, pricing and availability details have not been announced. However, given its flagship hardware and premium features, it’s safe to assume that the 10th-gen Lenovo Legion 9i will come with a premium price tag. • "content": "Premier League champions Liverpool are disappointed that Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving at the end of the season but manager Arne Slot said on Friday that a new player will step up to fill his shoes. Alexander-Arnold, who has been at Liverpool since the age of six, has become one of the best right backs in the world, winning two top-flight titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup plus the FA Cup and League Cup with the Anfield side. \"I think, like everyone who likes Liverpool and is a fan of Liverpool, we're disappointed because a good human is leaving the club but also a very, very, very good fullback is leaving us as well,\" Slot told reporters ahead of the visit of second-placed Arsenal on Sunday. \"I also worked at clubs like AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord where every season a very good player, or multiple very good players have left ... so I am a bit more used to it, maybe. \"The experience I have and, by the way, this club as well, that if a very good player is leaving, the next very good player will step up and that's probably what's going to happen now.\" TOO EARLY Asked if 21-year-old Conor Bradley, tipped by British media as the potential successor to Alexander-Arnold, was ready to step in, Slot said it was too early to make the comparison. \"Let's not compare him with Trent now already. They are also different types in my opinion,\" he said. \"With Conor I think we all see the potential ... unfortunately he hasn't been fit throughout the whole season. To become a very good player you have to be available every single week as well, and that's the first step he has to take next season. \"But we have a lot of confidence in Conor as a very good fullback for Liverpool and that's already what he's shown in the past two seasons.\" Slot said Bradley, who has started only four league games this term after struggling with multiple injuries, including a thigh issue in February that sidelined him for nearly six weeks, will be in the team on Sunday. \"Conor is going to start because I think he needs playing time as well to get some games under his belt to be prepared for next season,\" he said. Slot added that it was hard to predict how Sunday's match will turn out, with Liverpool having won the title last month. \"Difficult to predict but both teams look forward to this game. Okay, maybe there is a bit at stake for Arsenal, top four, assume they prefer second to third or fourth, we can only finish as first,\" he added. Arsenal, who were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris St Germain in the semi-finals on Wednesday, are 15 points adrift of Liverpool, three points above last season's champions Manchester City and four clear of Newcastle United and Chelsea.",

      • "description": "BEIJING, May 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Moscow on Thursday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Xi said that China-Russia relations have grown more confident, stable and resilient in the new era, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Xi said continuous development and deepening of China-Russia relations is the call of the times for safeguarding international fairness and justice and promoting the reform of the global governance system, according to Xinhua. The two sides should take a clear stand to jointly promote the correct historical perspective on World War II, safeguard the authority and status of the United Nations, resolutely defend the rights and interests of China, Russia and the vast number of developing countries, and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, Xi said. Noting that he was glad to visit Russia again at the invitation of Putin and attend the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War, Xi said that history and reality have fully proved that continuing to develop and deepen China-Russia relations is integral to carrying forward the friendship between the two peoples from generation to generation. It is an inevitable choice for both sides to achieve mutual success and promote their own development and revitalization, Xi said. In talks with Putin, Xi also said that the Chinese side will work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibility as two major countries of the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council, according to Xinhua. He urged the two countries to jointly promote the correct historical perspective on World War II, and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, according to Xinhua. Xi said that in face of unprecedented global changes, China and Russia have continuously deepened political mutual trust and strategic coordination, maintained close coordination and cooperation in international affairs, and injected valuable stability and positive energy into the changing and turbulent world. China-Russia ties have enjoyed stable, healthy and high-level development thanks to joint efforts from both sides, Xi said, hailing long-term good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation as distinct features of bilateral ties. Noting that China has for years been a main contributor to and stabilizer of global economic growth, Xi said China stands ready to work with Russia to safeguard the global multilateral trading system and keep the industrial and supply chains stable and unimpeded. Putin, for his part, said \"We develop our ties for the good of the two countries' people; they are not directed against anyone. Our relations are equal and mutually beneficial and don't depend on the current situation. The resolve to build good-neighborly relations, strengthen friendship and boost cooperation is a choice that Russia and China have made based on strategic interaction,\" according to Russia's TASS News Agency and Xinhua. In Putin's view, the sacrifices that the people of Russia and China made during World War II should never be forgotten, TASS reported. The Russian leader pointed out that he would be glad to visit China for celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan, TASS reported. Xi and Putin signed a joint statement on further deepening China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era, and witnessed the exchange of over 20 bilateral cooperation documents. In the joint statement, China and Russia agreed to firmly defend the victorious outcome of World War II (WWII). China and Russia also vowed to resolutely crush any act that attempts to tamper with WWII history, smear the historical achievements of China and Russia in WWII, or tarnish the image of the liberators. The two sides strongly condemn the acts to desecrate or damage memorial facilities of WWII martyrs. This visit marks Xi's 11th trip to Russia since he became Chinese president, Xinhua said. Xi and Putin have met more than 40 times on different occasions over the years, according to Xinhua. Their close communication provides strategic guidance, under which China-Russia relations have matured into a resilient and stable partnership characterized by deepening political trust, closer strategic alignment and sustained practical cooperation, Xinhua reported. Far-reaching significance Some Chinese and Russian scholars viewed the high-level interactions between China and Russia as having far-reaching significance, underscoring a stable and mutual trust that injects strong vitality and resilience into bilateral relations, making it a key pillar of global strategic stability and a multipolar world. Maksim Vilisov, Leading Research Fellow at the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the Global Times that Xi is visiting Russia at a very important historical moment. \"This shows to what extent he values the heritage of the victory in WWII, bilateral China-Russia relations, and his personal relations with President Putin,\" the Russian scholar said. This is a very symbolic visit and it marks the stability of mutual relations and broad prospects of their development,\" Vilisov said. China and Russia adhere to the provisions of the UN Charter and international law. Such activities are increasingly respected in the world and more and more countries support our efforts to build a multipolar system of international relations, Pavel V Troshchinskiy, Leading Researcher of Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Science, told the Global Times. Uphold multilateralism A key lesson history has taught the peoples of China and Russia is that in the face of foreign aggression and threats to national security, only resolute struggle can secure national sovereignty and earn the respect of the international community, Cui Heng, a scholar from the Shanghai-based China National Institute for SCO International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation, told the Global Times on Thursday. It was through joint resistance against fascism and eventual victory in WWII that China and Russia helped establish the current international order with the United Nations at its core, Cui said. The lessons of WWII remind us that the principles enshrined in the UN Charter - equality among nations regardless of size, the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and the rejection of force or the threat of force - must be upheld and defended, Cui noted. At a critical juncture where the world is undergoing profound transformation marked by both change and turbulence, the importance of China-Russia relations stands out more than ever, Li Haidong, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Thursday. China and Russia are also engaging in close cooperation in several important areas including jointly promoting the central role of the UN in global affairs, advancing a more balanced framework for major-power relations and fostering healthier and leading coordination and cooperation within the BRICS framework and among countries of the Global South, Li said. • "content": "BUSAN: Like many of his peers, Busan native Lee Jeong-bin plans to leave his hometown. The Dongseo University undergraduate hopes to work in South Korea’s automotive sector, specialising in production management or production technology. But opportunities in the southeastern port city are scarce. “There aren't many companies in Busan, so I’m considering Ulsan or Changwon,\" the 24-year-old told CNA. He is far from alone – about eight in 10 students at his university hail from the city, but only a small number stay on after graduation. The steady exodus of young professionals from Busan is one factor for its population decline. The city has lost about 600,000 people over the past three decades, with its population dropping from a peak of 3.88 million in 1995 to 3.27 million last year due to an ageing population , industrial decline and low birth rates. Lee said many young people, including his friends, leave Busan to cast a wider net when job hunting. “It’s a bit disappointing. If there were more job opportunities and chances in Busan or other regions, they could have grown and developed with the unique advantages of their own region,” he added. “But right now, everything is centred around the capital region and that feels somewhat discouraging.” Dongseo University’s executive vice-president Kim Jung-sun acknowledged that students are moving away not because they want to, but to look for work. “I think it's a social problem that's going on (with the) country being very Seoul-centred in terms of the economy and social life,” he said. RIVAL FOR ATTRACTING RESIDENTS More than half of the country's population now live in the Seoul metropolitan region , which includes Incheon city and Gyeonggi province. There are worries Busan could lose its spot as South Korea's second-largest city to Incheon, which is located just 27km from Seoul. Incheon, where South Korea's main airport is located, was designated the nation's first free economic zone in 2003. It has drawn investments from global and local companies, including the country's largest conglomerate Samsung, which set up its biotechnology arm here. Youths have been heading to cities like Incheon and Seoul in search of employment in industries that drive innovation and provide high-paying jobs, such as technology and finance. One jobseeker was Park Min-woo, who works as a strategic analyst for artificial intelligence start-up Wrtn Technologies. Park left Busan to attend a prestigious high school in Cheonan city. He then attended university in Seoul where he majored in business administration and computer science. He said he stayed on in Seoul after graduation because he wanted to work in AI or finance. While his living expenses were not cheap, he called it a small price to pay to pursue his ambitions. About 95,000 Koreans move to Seoul for school each year, hoping a degree from a well-regarded university will open doors. \"It's highly recommended, especially for specific industries that are considered much more frontier,” said Park. “Sadly, Busan has lost quite a population and the companies there have been closing down.” REVITALISING BUSAN Busan is now attempting to retain and attract talent by supporting startups, revitalising its infrastructure and creating new investment opportunities. The city launched various revitalisation projects beginning in 2010, aiming to transform areas which were losing their populations to business and cultural hubs. These included the North Port waterfront redevelopment which began in 2017, bringing back life to old ports and wharves, as well as other projects that integrated art and culture into declining districts. Unknown Diary, a café housed in a converted waterfront warehouse, is one of many businesses that are part of Busan’s urban regeneration efforts. Busan native Kim Mi-yeon opened the cafe six years ago, amid a sea of mostly shuttered factories in Yeongdo-gu. The district on Yeongdo Island located on Busan's southern edge was once known for its shipbuilding industry. The government has classified it as a population extinction area after its number of residents halved from its heyday in the 1980s to 110,000 last year. Kim said she chose to open her cafe in Yeongdo-gu instead of touristy seaside spots like Haeundae or Gwangalli because it felt authentic to her. She added that being able to see the port and where shipbuilding workers live represents the real Busan, and that authenticity drew her in. Unknown Diary and other cafes had to content with deserted surroundings and sparse footfall when they first opened for business. But foot traffic gradually increased as more customers discovered the establishments. One review by a customer stood out to Kim. “Someone wrote, ‘This used to be such a scary place to walk through. Mumyeong Ilgi (Unknown Diary) lit it up. Thank you - I hope you stay for a long time.’ Reading that, I realised how much of a difference a well-maintained space can make in a community,” she told CNA. She added she is hopeful that young people will slowly start coming back to Busan “if more long-lasting businesses, spaces and companies like ours emerge”. GETTING RESIDENTS TO RETURN Some said they would remain in Busan if they could find suitable jobs and salaries. Kim Chul-jin, a manager who works in Dongseo University’s public affairs and communications department, is one Busan resident who returned after spending a decade in Seoul. He had moved to the capital to find work in video production. He said he returned home as Seoul’s competitive environment made it difficult to settle down and start a family. “The job market in Busan is definitely smaller, and salaries are lower. However, lower income comes with lower living costs... Even just outside the campus, there are affordable restaurants. Groceries are cheaper as well. So, while you earn less, you also spend less,” he said. Lee Kyung-deok, director-general of Busan Metropolitan City’s planning bureau, said the rate of outward migration is slowing down. \"While youth out-migration has been a persistent issue, we see signs of stabilisation, with the rate of outflow slowing, compared to the past decade,” he added. He said there is a need to improve awareness of job opportunities, and to connect local businesses that need employees with young people who said they cannot find jobs. BUSAN AS A FUTURE HUB Busan is also planning to improve its infrastructure with a new international airport, planned to be up and running by 2030. Experts say the Gadeok Island New Airport could create more than 110,000 new jobs. Lee said the airport will significantly improve accessibility to Busan. The city attracted close to three million foreign visitors in 2024, achieving a new record. \"Currently, there are only a few entry points for international travellers, so even those heading to Busan often have to pass through Incheon (International Airport),” he said. Lee added that Busan’s position as a tourist city will be stronger once the new airport opens, with more flight routes and connections to other countries. The city is also looking beyond tourism as it vies to become a magnet for business investment. South Korea’s parliament is currently reviewing a proposed Global Hub City Special Act, which could allow Busan to designate special districts for finance, logistics and investment. It will strengthen incentives for businesses and investors moving to Busan. The government is also planning to create a hub for high-tech industries like robotics and artificial intelligence, reported local media. “The law would provide regulatory relief and special administrative and financial benefits to support these industries,” said Lee. “Rather than competing with other regions, we want to enhance Busan’s existing strengths.”",

      • "content": "Tom Cruise, the iconic Hollywood actor known for his roles in Top Gun and the Mission: Impossible franchise, is reportedly set to receive an honorary knighthood from the British Crown. This recognition would acknowledge his significant contributions to the UK film industry and his longstanding relationship with British culture. Cruise's connection to the UK spans over four decades, beginning with his involvement in Ridley Scott's Legend in 1985. Since then, he has filmed numerous major productions in Britain, including Interview with the Vampire, Eyes Wide Shut, and several Mission: Impossible films. His frequent presence in the UK, from casual pub visits to unannounced helicopter landings, has endeared him to locals. A report by Daily Mail suggests that it is possible Cruise might receive the knighthood next month coinciding with King Charles's Birthday Honours. If this happens, Cruise will be joining the list of Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, and Bill Gates, who were all given the award by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Notably, this is the only title presented by the British Crown that non-British citizens are eligible for. In addition to his ties with the UK, Cruise has been recognized internationally for his contributions to the film industry. In July 2024, he was inducted as a Knight of the Legion of Honour by France's Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, in a private ceremony in Paris. This prestigious award acknowledged his efforts in promoting French cinema and his passionate defense of movie theaters. Tom Cruise is currently gearing up for the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to release on May 23, 2025.",

      • "description": "As part of efforts to deal with unmanned aerial systems, the Republic of Singapore Navy will also upgrade its ships with a Strales 76mm guided gun, which has proven effective against fast-moving targets.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: To counter emerging threats arising from unmanned systems, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) is looking at incorporating cheaper, off-the-shelf drones into its suite of capabilities; and will upgrade its ships with guns known to be effective against fast-moving targets. These updates, shared by Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Sean Wat on Friday (May 9), come amid the maritime domain experiencing what he called an \"increasingly complex set of challenges\". Traditional issues such as sea robberies and piracy; trafficking; and illegal unreported and unregulated fishing are still present in the region, though kept under control by littoral states. There is also the risk of maritime terror attacks which RSN is monitoring; while geopolitical rivalries and unresolved territorial disputes play out in the form of increasingly aggressive and assertive postures and actions at sea, he said. It is against this backdrop that the RSN is exploring how it can go beyond higher-end unmanned systems, to adapt lower-cost and commercially off-the-shelf drones, said RADM Wat in a written interview with the media after the International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference Asia 2025. \"This is critical as it would allow us to shorten the capability-development cycle to effectively deal with emerging threats,\" he said. \"We envisage that we will operate a mix of higher-end, purpose-built drones, as well as low-cost drones to fulfil the range of our operational needs.\" When it comes to countering these proliferating unmanned aerial systems (UAS), the Singapore navy needs to develop innovative and practical solutions, its chief added. \"For example, to deal with threats posed by drones, both in the air and surface domains, the RSN will be progressively upgrading our ships with the Strales 76mm guided gun,\" said RADM Wat. \"This also offers a cost-effective solution as compared to other conventional weapons such as higher-end missiles. We are also exploring other solutions.\" The Strales gun comes with Direct Ammunition Recovery Technique (DART) where projectiles are guided by a radio beam that follows the target through a homing system. The Singapore navy already uses a mix of missile and gun platforms to counter air and surface threats. Last month, it posted on Facebook about using the Aster missile system to take down an aerial drone off the coast of France, during a live-firing exercise. NEW PATROL VESSELS RADM Wat also gave updates on the navy's future platforms, including Singapore's first two offshore patrol vessels which are expected to be introduced from 2028. Earlier in April, a keel-laying ceremony - which customarily marks the start of full production - was conducted for the two ships in Lithuania. The navy chief noted there was \"good progress\" in the construction of the vessels, which are based on a \"proven\" design by the German Federal Police and designed with high manoeuvrability to operate in Singapore’s congested waters. \"The ships will be equipped with a suite of lethal and less-lethal capabilities to provide flexibility and calibrated responses against a wide spectrum of maritime threats,\" said RADM Wat, adding that they will progressively replace the Maritime Security Response Flotilla’s existing Sentinel-class vessels. This adds on to other new naval assets announced by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen during his ministry's parliamentary budget debate in March. Two more Invincible-class submarines will be added to RSN's current fleet of four, and are projected for delivery from 2034 . The navy will also launch its first multi-role combat vessels (MRCVs), which are expected to be progressively operationalised from 2028. The Singapore Armed Forces is also looking into replacing its Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircrafts which have been in service for three decades. The Boeing P-8A and Airbus C295 are being evaluated as possible contenders. LESSONS FROM ELSEWHERE Looking at conflicts abroad, Rear Admiral Wat pointed out that the Houthis used a variety of low-end and high-end weapons in attacks in the Red Sea. The militant group, which controls much of Yemen, has been targeting ships in the inlet since Israel began its military offensive against Hamas in Gaza. \" Shipping through the Red Sea fell significantly, costing hundreds of billions of dollars of damage to the global economy,\" the RSN chief noted. He also observed how novel maritime unmanned capabilities have been employed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Attacks on critical underwater infrastructure have also come into sharp focus in recent months, said RADM Wat, pointing to underwater cables and pipelines being damaged, particularly in the Baltic Sea. Countries in that region moved quickly to respond, with national governments working closely with regional partners, private industries and other stakeholders to secure the infrastructure, he noted. He cited an example of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO launching an operation bringing together navies and other agencies to protect the infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. He also pointed to Dr Ng raising such underwater infrastructure as an \"area of concern\" during a meeting with ASEAN defence ministers earlier this year. RADM Wat said the RSN cannot navigate complex maritime security challenges alone and that partnerships - both international and regional - are key, be it through dialogues or other forms of cooperation. The Singapore navy will also continue to strengthen defence relations through regular engagement with counterparts around the world, with bilateral and multilateral exercises.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: A man who got into a boat chase with the Police Coast Guard after illegally entering Singapore waters was sentenced to four months and six weeks' jail and three strokes of the cane on Friday (May 9). Muhammad Rasidi Bin A Razak, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of navigating his boat rashly and one count of entering Singapore illegally. A third charge of failing to stop his boat when he was ordered to do so by a coast guard officer was considered for sentencing. The court heard that Rasidi, a Malaysian, had been working as a full-time boatman for about one month at the time. He drove a motorised fibreglass boat. In March, two individuals, Kiew Yuke Hua and Surinarayanan Subramaniam, contacted Rasidi to arrange a fishing trip on Apr 18. On the morning of the trip, Rasidi met them at a jetty in Johor and they set off at about 8am. They fished until past 1pm. Rasidi then steered his boat to the waters off Pulau Sarimbun, which is near Singapore's northwestern coast. This was despite Rasidi knowing that he should not go within 100m of Singapore's shore, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Law Yan An. At about 2pm, a coast guard officer who was on patrol spotted the boat 1m from the shore of Pulau Sarimbun. This was about 0.27 nautical miles within Singapore's territorial waters. On seeing the coast guard vessel, Rasidi panicked and immediately accelerated towards Malaysian waters, said Mr Law. The coast guard officer activated his vessel's police blinker and pursued Rasidi's boat. Despite limited space and shallow waters, Rasidi navigated his boat at high speed in order to evade the coast guard officer. During the chase, the coast guard officer tried to intercept Rasidi's boat but he continued at high speed. This resulted in a collision that threw his two passengers overboard. Rasidi tried to move the boat to retrieve them. He did not comply when the coast guard officer asked him to stop, instead steering towards the coast guard vessel and causing a second collision. It was only when the coast guard officer drew his service pistol and asked Rasidi to stop that he did. The two passengers were then brought on board. The coast guard officer suffered a minor cut on his leg, and there were light scratches on the coast guard vessel. A second coast guard vessel arrived and the officers conducted checks on Rasidi's boat. They did not find any valid travel documents, and arrested the trio. In mitigation, Rasidi asked the judge for leniency as he was a first-time offender, the sole breadwinner of his family and had to take care of his sickly mother and aunt. The judge meted out the jail term sought by the prosecution, but gave Rasidi three strokes instead of four strokes of the cane on account of this being his first offence. The punishment for entering Singapore illegally is up to six months in jail and at least three strokes of the cane. For navigating a vessel in a rash manner that endangered human life, an offender can be jailed up to one year, fined up to S$5,000 (US$3,900) or both.",
