      • "description": "Colombian president Gustavo Petro's strategy of engaging in dialogue with his country's armed factions \"have not borne fruit\". File photo: AFP",
      • "content": "Colombian authorities said Monday they had captured over 200 members of the country's biggest drug cartel, which is accused of murdering two dozen security force members in the past month. The Gulf Clan was born out of the right-wing paramilitary groups that fought leftist guerrillas in the 1990s before turning their attention to the cocaine trade. President Gustavo Petro has accused the group, with which he suspended peace talks in early 2023, of devising a strategy to \"systematically murder\" members of the security forces. At a press conference on Monday, Armed Forces chief Franciso Cubides said the security forces had responded by arresting 217 members of the clan since April 15. He added that 15 other suspected drug traffickers had been shot dead in raids that had netted 6.8 metric tons of drugs, 123 firearms and over 15,000 munitions. Sixteen police officers and five soldiers have been killed in attacks blamed on what Petro has called the Gulf Clan's \"pistol plan.\" Cubides said the attacks were part of a \"desperate response\" by armed groups to the \"overwhelming\" setbacks they were suffering at the hands of the police and military in the north and west of the country. The Gulf Clan, which engages in illegal gold mining, racketeering and migrant smuggling, is believed to number about 7,500 members, according to government estimates. The arrests come as Colombia suffers its worst outburst of violence since the leftist FARC guerrilla army, one of the world's oldest rebel movements, signed a peace deal with the government in 2016. Interior Minister Armando Benedetti admitted last month that Petro's strategy of pursuing \"total peace\" by engaging dialogue with the country's various armed groups had not borne fruit. On Petro's watch, several armed groups, particularly the Gulf clan, have grown stronger, Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez admitted recently in an AFP interview.

      • "content": "The Trump administration said Monday it will pay for the travel and give $1,000 to undocumented migrants who \"self-deport\" back to their home country. US President Donald Trump said some of the undocumented migrants who take advantage of the self-deportation scheme will be given a path to legally return to the United States. \"We're going to pay each one a certain amount of money, and we're going to get them a beautiful flight back to where they came from,\" Trump told reporters during an event at the White House. \"We're going to work with them so that maybe someday, with a little work, they can come back in if they're good people, if they're the kind of people that we want in our (country),\" he said. \"It will give them a path to coming back into the country.\" Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, announcing the travel assistance and $1,000 stipend program, said \"self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.\" The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is \"offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.\" CBP Home refers to an app already created by the DHS through which people can deport themselves. DHS said the stipend of $1,000 will be paid after a person's return to their home country has been confirmed through the app. \"Self-deportation is a dignified way to leave the US and will allow illegal aliens to avoid being encountered by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),\" the department said in the statement. DHS said that even with the payment of travel assistance and the stipend \"it is projected that the use of CBP Home will decrease the costs of a deportation by around 70 percent.\" It said that the average cost currently to arrest, detain, and remove an undocumented migrant is $17,121. DHS said an undocumented migrant from Honduras had already taken advantage of the program to return home. Trump pledged during his presidential campaign to carry out mass deportations and claimed during the White House event that there are as many as 21 million undocumented migrants in the United States. However the number of undocumented migrants stood at 11.0 million in 2022, according to Pew Research Center estimates based on data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. Geçtiğimiz yıl, İsrail’in Gazze’de yürüttüğü operasyonların soykırım kapsamına girip girmediğinin araştırılması gerektiğini dile getirmişti. İsrail bu suçlamaları kesin bir dille reddetmişti. Papa, Gazze halkının yaşadığı sıkıntıları sık sık dile getirmiş, hatta Şubat ayında zatürre nedeniyle hastanedeyken bile her gece Gazze’deki tek Katolik kilisesini arayarak insanların durumunu sormaya devam etmişti.

• "content": "( MENAFN - GlobeNewsWire - Nasdaq) A devilishly fun twist on possession, family, and smart homes gone rogue - Now in development VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Perfect 7 Media Inc., a boutique production company based in North Vancouver, is thrilled to announce it has optioned The Unwanted Exorcist, a horror-comedy feature written by Kevin Schultz and Kayla May Howard. This marks the second collaboration between Perfect 7 Media founder Micah Kelpin and writer-director Kevin Schultz, whose horror- romance Girl Gone Bad (2022) is currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Plex, and Tubi. A genre mashup of The Conjuring (2013), and The Nice Guys (2016), The Unwanted Exorcist tells the story of Norman and Cynthia Jensen, whose long-lost daughter returns home after three years - only she didn't come back alone. As paranormal chaos erupts, the desperate parents enlist Ronnie Malkin, a down-on-his-luck secular exorcist with a flair for theatrics. Faith, family, and technology collide in this hilariously terrifying ride. “With the rising popularity of horror-comedy hybrids like Totally Killer (2023) and Abigail (2024), The Unwanted Exorcist taps into the audience appetite for scares with heart, humor, and a supernatural twist.” “It's rare to find something that nails comedy, horror, and heart all at once. Kevin and Kayla have created something truly special, and we're excited to bring it to life,” said Kelpin. The Unwanted Exorcist will mark Kayla May Howard's feature debut, establishing her as an exciting new voice in genre storytelling. Schultz, known for his sharp, unsettling narratives, brings experience and wit to the partnership. “This script is in its seventh draft and feels more alive than ever,” said Schultz.“Kayla and I have poured years into crafting something that's scary, funny, and surprisingly emotional. We couldn't ask for better partners than Perfect 7 Media Inc.” The film is set to enter active development in Fall 2025, aligning with Perfect 7 Media's growing slate of original content. About Perfect 7 Media Founded in 2022, Perfect 7 Media Inc. is a North Vancouver-based production company dedicated to creating bold, character-driven content for film and television. With award-winning shorts like OCD (2023), Cupcake (2024), and Pepe sul Cuore (2025), the company is now expanding into feature films - starting with The Unwanted Exorcist. • "content": "( MENAFN - EIN Presswire) At least 324 defenders killed in 32 countries for their peaceful work in 2024 DUBLIN, IRELAND, May 6, 2025 /EINPresswire / -- Despite an increasingly hostile world with expanded threats to their work, human rights defenders (HRDs) everywhere demonstrated a remarkable level of resilience and determination as they resisted a global rollback on human rights, Front Line Defenders said as it launched its flagship report. The Front Line Defenders Global Analysis 2024/25 gives a detailed panorama of the violations against HRDs at risk in 105 countries in all regions of the world last year. The report also reveals statistics gathered and verified by the HRD Memorial – which Front Line Defenders coordinates – documenting the killings of at least 324 HRDs in 32 countries in 2024. HRDs working on land rights, citizen's rights and Indigenous peoples' rights each made up almost a fifth of the total, and the countries with the highest number of killings documented were Colombia (157), Mexico (32), Guatemala (29), Palestine (22) and Brazil (15). (See pp. 6-13 for complete data.) “Year on year, hundreds of human rights defenders pay the ultimate price when they are killed for their work, having a devastating impact on their families and communities. It is a grim reflection of the immense danger faced by those who work peacefully to defend human rights,” said Alan Glasgow, Executive Director of Front Line Defenders. “Other threats and risks are manifold. Front Line Defenders' analysis shows that women's rights defenders globally and HRDs working in situations of conflict were among those most targeted for their work. It is a remarkable sign of these defenders' courage that they continue their struggle despite such immense danger. They are the best among us, who fervently believe a better world is worth fighting for.” Wide-ranging risks to HRDs Arbitrary arrest/detention was the most commonly reported violation against HRDs around the world, followed by threats/other harassment, legal action, death threats and surveillance (see pp. 14-20 for a more detailed breakdown, including by region). Women HRDs reported slightly higher levels of threats/other harassment compared to their male counterparts, while trans and non gender-conforming HRDs reported this as the most common violation they faced overall. Criminalisation of HRDs remained rife with 107 charges filed in 75 cases. The most commonly cited charges were linked to defamation (23.4%); national security (19.6%); other criminal charges (12.1%); public order offences (11.2%); and terrorism-related charges (11.2%). In every region, governments and non-state actors turned to the judicial system to disrupt, stymie, stigmatise, bankrupt and imprison HRDs, regardless of the human rights they were defending. Counter-terrorism legislation and“Foreign Agent” laws were among those weaponised for use against HRDs. Globally, the five most targeted areas of human rights defence were: women's rights (12%); LGBTIQ+ rights (9%); human rights violations in conflict (7%); human rights movements (6%); and environmental rights (6%). When considered together, environmental, Indigenous and land rights defenders accounted for 15% of the documented violations. (Regional breakdowns are available in the report.) Women's rights on the frontlines According to Front Line Defenders data, defenders working on women's rights were among the most targeted globally in 2024, ranking in the top three for all regions except one. This trend played out in numerous ways, with women human rights defenders (WHRDs) subjected to smear campaigns, criminalisation, arbitrary arrest and detention, as well as targeted with threats – including threats of sexual and gender-based violence. WHRDs played key roles in protest movements seeking more just societies – for example in Bangladesh – faced stark discrimination in countries like Afghanistan and Iran, and shouldered heavy burdens in conflict and crisis situations, ranging from Gaza to Colombia, DRC, Myanmar, Sudan and Ukraine. Dr. Mahrang Baloch , an outspoken WHRD from Pakistan's Balochistan region, faced ongoing risks throughout the year, including travel bans, smear campaigns and arbitrary detention. At the time of publication she remains jailed in Quetta after being arbitrarily arrested for leading a peaceful protest. In a foreword provided to Front Line Defenders, she described why HRDs persist in their struggle: “We must continue to resist. Because human rights defenders are the ones standing on the frontlines, risking everything so that others may find their missing loved ones, so that everyone can go to school, so that the silenced can speak, so that women raped in refugee camps can find justice, so that those fighting alone in their homes, their villages, their cities can know they are not alone. We must stand with them, and we must stand together. Not for a nation. Not for a religion. Not for a race. But for humanity. Because if we do not, who will?” The statistics in the Global Analysis are derived from Front Line Defenders' casework and approved grant applications between 1 January and 31 December 2024. The statistics are based on 2,068 reported violations across 105 countries. Front Line Defenders documents multiple violations per case or grant, as this is the reality of the situation for human rights defenders. • "content": "A military parade, fly-past and balcony appearance by the royal family on Monday kicked off four days of UK celebrations marking 80 years since the end of World War II. King Charles III saluted as around 1,000 members of the UK armed forces, joined by NATO colleagues from the United States, France and Germany, along with 11 soldiers from Ukraine waving their country's flag reached the end of the procession in front of Buckingham Palace. Tens of thousands defied the damp weather on the Union Jack-lined Mall to watch the parade, which began with Winston Churchill's 1945 victory speech, read by actor Timothy Spall. \"Do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straight forward and die if need be, unconquered,\" bellowed Spall, standing in front of the wartime UK leader's statue in Parliament Square. The procession culminated in a fly-past featuring fighter jet display team The Red Arrows and 23 current and historic military aircraft, which the 76-year-old monarch watched from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince William and his wife Catherine along with their children George, Charlotte and Louis. As European countries gear up to celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8, the war in Ukraine is a reminder \"that peace is never to be taken for granted\", Charles told the Italian parliament last month. \"Today, sadly, the echoes of those times -- which we fervently hoped had been consigned to history -- reverberate across our continent,\" the king said. It was from the same balcony on May 8, 1945, that King George VI and Queen Elizabeth -- alongside daughters princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, and then-prime minister Churchill -- greeted tens of thousands of Londoners celebrating what Churchill declared the \"day of victory in Europe\". That night, the two princesses, then 19 and 14, were allowed to leave the palace and join the jubilant crowds incognito. Some 40 years later, Elizabeth, by then queen, described the night as \"one of the most memorable\" of her life. This year's commemorations will take on extra poignancy given the fading memories of World War II. Younger generations are increasingly disconnected from the conflict that shook the continent from 1939 to 1945. \"It's important to remember some of the poor devils who didn't make it like I did,\" 99-year-old Royal Air Force veteran Dennis Bishop told AFP. The first act on a chilly Monday morning in London was the draping of two huge Union Jack flags on the Cenotaph war memorial. Hundreds of people set up camp outside Buckingham Palace with chairs and rugs. \"It's so emotional to be here today. Eighty years of peace and peace of mind. Where would we be without them?\" asked Patrick Beacon, 76, who arrived with his wife at around 7:00 am (0600 GMT) to get the \"best view\". Tourists included 52-year-old Ludivine Batthelot from southern France. \"We came out of curiosity because it's the kind of celebration that the English do so well,\" she told AFP. \"It's folklore, we wanted to be in the mood and live the experience.\" HMS Belfast, one of the few surviving British warships from World War II, which is moored on the banks of the Thames hosted a party. And people were invited to take part in hundreds of other parties, 1940s dress-up events, picnics, installations and commemorations that take place across the country through the week until VE Day on Thursday. As part of the festivities Prime Minister St armer hosted a bunting-festooned street party outside his official London residence, serving guests tea. Other treats on the menu included Victoria sponge cake, scotch eggs and pork pies. Buckingham Palace also laid on a garden party celebrating veterans and people of the World War II generation. On Tuesday, Queen Camilla will visit an art installation of around 30,000 ceramic red poppies -- symbols of remembrance for the war dead -- at the iconic Tower of London. Celebrations will draw to a close on Thursday with a two-minute national silence at government buildings. Charles, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, will attend a service at Westminster Abbey, followed by a concert at London's Horse Guards Parade. The royal family was hoping \"nothing will detract or distract\" from the celebrations after Prince Harry, Charles's youngest son, gave a bombshell interview on Friday, according to UK media. • "content": "The donation, which Pope Francis made before his death, was announced on the same day that Israel approved plans to seize the entire Gaza Strip and to stay in the Palestinian territory for an unspecified amount of time. The late Pope Francis has donated one of his popemobiles to be converted into a mobile health unit to serve the children of Gaza, charity officials have said. The Jerusalem and Sweden branches of the Vatican's Caritas charitable federation released photos of the repurposed vehicle on Monday. There has been no word on when the vehicle might be put to use. The donation was announced on the same day that Israel approved plans to seize the entire Gaza Strip and to stay in the Palestinian territory for an unspecified amount of time. \"When the humanitarian corridor to Gaza reopens, it (the popemobile) will be ready to give primary healthcare to children in Gaza,\" Caritas Jerusalem said in a statement. The vehicle will be outfitted with equipment for diagnosis, examination, and treatment. Caritas said it would have testing equipment, suture kits, syringes and needles, oxygen supply, vaccines and a refrigerator. \"This vehicle represents the love, care and closeness shown by His Holiness for the most vulnerable, which he expressed throughout the crisis,\" the secretary general of Caritas Jerusalem, Anton Asfar, said in a statement. During Israel's war in Gaza, Pope Francis became increasingly outspoken in his criticism of the IDF's harsh tactics while also demanding the return of hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023. Last year, he urged an investigation into whether Israel’s war in the enclave amounted to genocide, a charge Israel vehemently denied. He repeatedly spoke out about the plight of people in Gaza and had a nightly ritual that he even maintained while he was in the hospital in February with pneumonia: he would call the lone Catholic church in the Strip to see how people huddled inside were coping. Pope Francis died on 21 April at the age of 88.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - UkrinForm) The spokesperson for the Kyiv City Military Administration, Yevhen Ievlev, commented on the situation with the journalist who wrote the article about his father's declaration, calling his reaction emotional. Ievlev posted the post on Facebook , Ukrinform reports. “These days, journalists of one of the publications released a material in which they questioned the declaration of my parents' family. And I allowed myself emotions towards the author of this material. Because I believe that the article mentioning my family is manipulative and emotionally colored. And this does not coincide with journalistic standards,” Ievlev wrote. According to the spokesperson, his father, who served in the Armed Forces all his life, came to the defense of Ukraine to stop Russian aggression. He himself joined his father on February 26, 2022, and has been performing combat missions in the East for almost three years. “My father is almost at the age limit for service - he continues to serve in the TSC and SP, in a literally frontline community,” the KCMA spokesman emphasized. He admitted that he was offended by the published material.“Today's media want to“hype”, and this is harmful and painful. At the same time, understanding how the tools of provocation work, I perceived the communication with my colleague, the author of the article, as fake,” the spokesman said. According to Ievlev, as a spokesperson, he was supposed to“extinguish conflicts, reduce misunderstandings, and resolve problematic issues,” but today he“failed to fulfill this task.” Ievlev emphasized that he is in favor of constructive communication in the media community and hopes for understanding. “As a citizen, I have the right to emotions. All the men in my family fought, lost their health and risked their lives for Ukraine. As a decent son, I have the right and will protect my parents from attempts to insult their honor and dignity,” he said. Earlier, the publication“Vilne Radio” reported that its journalist Yevhen Vakulenko received threats from the KCMA spokesman Yevhen Ievlev after publishing a story about the declaration of a serviceman of the Pokrovsk Territorial center for recruitment and social support (TSC and SP), Serhiy Ievlev, who turned out to be his father. According to the publication, according to the military man's declaration, Serhiy Ievlev's wife owns a 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser SUV worth UAH 773,000. At the same time, according to the documents, his wife has no official income. After the article was published, Vakulenko said, the KCMA spokesperson threatened him with physical violence and called him an enemy of the people who“sells trash content.” Regarding the SUV, Ievlev said that his father had been saving for it“for years.” Vakulenko, according to him, offered Ievlev to comment on his father's wealth, but he refused, accusing the journalist of incompetence and an attempt to“formally save face.” MENAFN05052025000193011044ID1109510768 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "( MENAFN - UkrinForm) Ukraine and the Republic of Korea have launched a new format for coordinating economic cooperation through a joint Business Council, consolidating the agreements in a memorandum. This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, Ukrinform saw. It is noted that on May 2, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the \"Ukrainian-Korean Business Council\" (UKBC) Association signed a memorandum on coordinating cooperation between the two countries. The signing was attended by First Deputy Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev and Chairman of the Board of the UKBC Association Roman Hryhoryshyn. \"The signing of today's memorandum is an important stage in coordinating our cooperation with the Republic of Korea on the principle of a 'single window'. We seek to form long-term institutional cooperation through the UKBC, develop it as much as possible, and integrate the Korean private sector into strategic government initiatives. The intergovernmental partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Korea allows attracting credit funds from the Korean Economic Development and Cooperation Fund (EDCF) to the Ukrainian economy,\" Sobolev noted. Read also: South Korea has no intention of changing Ukraine aid policy According to the memorandum, the parties will cooperate in attracting investments in key sectors of the economy, supporting companies in the markets of both countries, introducing innovative technologies, and developing joint projects in the areas of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and green energy. It is also planned to support the increase in bilateral trade volumes by facilitating access to the markets of both countries, providing logistical support for the export and import of goods, supporting joint research projects and scientific conferences, as well as projects of small and medium-sized enterprises with a focus on innovative approaches and sustainable development. It is planned to organize business forums and meetings to expand networking. The Ministry of Economy and the Ukrainian Development Cooperation Agency will soon form a list of joint projects with the Korean Economic Development Fund (EDCF) and in the private sector. It is planned to create a dashboard of promising projects and develop a cooperation roadmap, as well as joint monitoring of all initiatives. As Ukrinform reported, in June 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft law of Ukraine on ratification of the framework agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Korea on loans from the Economic Development and Cooperation Fund (EDCF) for 2024-2029. • "content": "A new funding scheme was launched on Monday to give financial compensation to registered fishermen who assist researchers in collecting real-time marine data during their operations at sea. The initiative was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said during a press conference held alongside representatives from Aquatic Resources Malta (ARM). Under the scheme, eligible fishermen will be paid approximately €320 per fishery as part of the EMFAF DC-MAP programme. The scheme is designed to make the fishing community a key partner in sustainable marine resource management by involving them directly in the research process. “This is a concrete step that shows how Malta is working towards a more responsible and sustainable management of its natural resources,” said Bugeja Said. “Data collection is crucial to making informed decisions and building a strong policy for the future of the fisheries sector.” The scheme supports Malta’s broader vision for a sustainable blue economy and aligns with the country’s commitments to innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based policymaking. It also aims to make scientific research in the fisheries sector more inclusive and participatory. Fishermen with licensed vessels who wish to participate will be selected based on established criteria. Applications for the scheme will be open from May 12 to May 17 with assistance available from ARM offices in Marsaxlokk, St Paul's Bay, and Mġarr, Gozo. Dr Jurgen Mifsud, a scientist at ARM, emphasised Malta’s progress in marine data collection over the past two decades. He noted that ARM’s trained scientific observers play a vital role in gathering detailed information about species caught, their sizes, and fishing practices. “Direct observation is essential for sustainable fish stock management and for meeting our obligations under the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy,” said Dr Mifsud. “We urge fishermen across Malta and Gozo to continue supporting and strengthening this effort.” You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the link in the footer of our emails.

      • "content": "Summer will kick off with four music, dance and arts festivals that will “strengthen our cultural identity and offer a platform to local and international artists,” Arts Minister Owen Bonnici said on Monday. Festivals Malta will be staging four festivals between May and July namely Ritmu Roots, Malta International Arts Festival, Malta Jazz Festival and Dance Festival Malta. Speaking at the launch of Festivals Malta’s summer programme of events, Bonnici said the events will not only boost Malta’s summer season with “high-level activites” but will also attract thousands of people to the island “with direct benefits both on an economic and social level”. Ritmu Roots Festival will open the Festivals Malta summer calendar with its third edition which will be held between May 21 and 24. The Artistic Director of Ritmu Roots Festival, Andrew Alamango, said \"Ritmu is a platform for the public where communities come together with music and participate in traditional activities with the community.\" This year, this festival will include projects such as Kummittiva, Għana, the game of balls, and international artists such as Tarta Relena, Pliri Ntaxei and Vincent Moon. The Malta International Arts Festival returns from June 13 to 22 with ten days of multi-disciplinary events including dance, music, theatre and visual arts performances. This year's programme includes a concert by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Underground Valletta, M.A.D. – Music and Dance, Music Painted by Caravaggio and Boċi the Musical in collaboration with Teatru Malta. \"The Malta International Arts Festival has an innovative programme with a contemporary aesthetic across various historical sites to make the narrative of cultural heritage an integral part of the unique experience of this festival,\" Artistic Director, Ruben Zahra said. The Malta Jazz Festival will include an eclectic programme of events with a celebrity line-up featuring artists such as Michael Mayo, Rebecca Martin, Peter Barnstein, Knower and many more. Artistic Director Sandro Zerafa explained, \"With a programme ranging from Peter Bernstein's iconic musical styles, to the explosive energy of the Los Angeles duo, Knower, to the folk music of Rebecca Martin, the Malta Jazz Festival – now in its 35th edition – delivers on its promise of combining eclecticism, integrity and excellence.\" This festival will be held between July 7 and 12. Dance Festival Malta, which will take place between July 24 and 27, will connect local artists with various European artists by offering them a platform where they can discuss, share and improve their artwork through masterclasses and specialist workshops. The festival will also feature four days of dance performances that convey diverse messages through wonderful choreographies. \"Dance Festival Malta is a festival that unites different cultures, generations and voices – where the power of movement and dance celebrates differences, sparks dialogue and unites us as a community,\" explained artistic director, Francesca Tranter.
Ele é o primeiro escritor leigo a criticar abertamente a sexualidade de Joana, utilizando termos depreciativos e introduzindo elementos claramente misóginos.

      • "description": "The trial by jury of brothers Robert (left) and Adrian (right) Agius known as Ta' Maksar, alongside Jamie Vella and George Degiorgio entered its tenth day.",
      • "content": "A police inspector has told a court that they found nothing on Kevin Ellul better known as “Double O” when investigating him. The trial by jury of four men who stand accused of their different roles in the murders of lawyer Carmel Chircop and journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia resumed on Monday, with the trial entering its tenth day. Brothers Adrian and Robert Agius, better known as Ta’ Maksar, along with associates Jamie Vella and George Degiorgio, are all facing different charges in connection with Chircop’s murder. Adrian Agius is accused of commissioning the hit on the lawyer, which prosecutors allege was carried out with the complicity of his brother Robert, along with Vella and Degiorgio. Robert Agius and George Degiorgio (iċ-Ċiniż) are accused of supplying the bomb in Caruana Galizia’s assassination. All four men deny the charges. One of Monday’s witnesses was police inspector Wayne Camilleri, who coordinated the operation from within the Police headquarters. He explained that he entered the investigation in the same week that the Agius brothers and Vella were arrested. A relative of convicted hitman Vince Muscat, who has been handed a 15-year prison term in connection with the journalist’s murder and a presidential pardon in Chircop’s case, was asked to identify Robert Agius from an identification parade. Muscat’s father-in-law, Peter Brincat, was allegedly approached by a “blonde” individual, who he suspected was one of the Agius brothers. The man did not identify anyone in the identification parade. The witness also testified when Robert Agius released a statement saying that two prisoners – Melchior Spiteri and Brandon Cachia – approached him with information on the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia. The police interrogated both Cachia and Spiteri, who testified in the trial last week. Cachia had told Agius that his former girlfriend Nicole Brignone, had once told him that the bomb was made by Ellul. In his testimony, the police inspector highlighted that , who dated both Ellul and Cachia at the same time, gave a different version of events. Camilleri underlined that Brignone had said Ellul was approached before the assassination and refused to take part. Acting on information given by Brignone in the magisterial inquiry, the police requested an arrest warrant for Ellul. The man was abroad and was only arrested upon his return from Sicily. The police searched his Mellieħa residence but found nothing illegal. Ellul was also interrogated and exercised his right to silence. However, before they took him down to the lock up, the man asked to release a statement. In his second statement, Ellul insisted that he did not know the Degiorgio brothers, who are convicted in the Caruana Galizia case. He also underlined that he would not be able to recognise them nor did he ever contact them in any way. Brignone on her end, had mentioned that Ellul was approached to join in the assassination but refused and had also testified about the Degiorgio brothers calling him from prison using clandestine phones. Ellul also took the witness stand in the jury last week and told the panel of jurors that he is the target of a \" \" originating from prison. Camilleri was cross-examined by defence lawyer Rene Darmanin, who sought answers on what police investigations were carried out into Ellul. Darmanin reminded the witness that Brignone had given first a statement and then chose to retract the oath and give a second statement on the same day. The police inspector said that Brignone would frequently emphasise her history with drug use when pressed for details. Camilleri said she would frequently tell them that she did not remember exactly, adding that she was using heavy drugs at the time. When asked about her request for protection, Camilleri said this was not seen as necessary since at the time the woman was in a residential rehabilitation programme, and therefore it was “secure”. He could not recall why the woman requested protection. The defence recalled that Brignone alleged Ellul was involved in drug trafficking, had weapons and dabbled in explosives. “When Ellul was arrested and searched, the police found nothing. We had nothing on him,” Camilleri said. He was asked whether Ellul’s wife was investigated, since Brignone said she would import drugs for her husband. “I for sure no,” came the answer, with the inspector adding that Brignone had told them he had a rocky relationship with his wife at the time. She even told them that she had no idea he was married when she met him. “Whenever pressed, she became defensive and would speak about her drug use,” Camilleri added, saying that the inquiring magistrate at the time was not convinced and that is why they took more than one statement from her. The inspector explained that the police had only the details she provided them and the woman could not recall where the other garage allegedly owned by Ellul where he opened the drugs in front of her was. Asked whether they investigated an incident where he allegedly shot at her and missed at her house, Camilleri said that although she mentioned the incident she could not recall the date or details. Moreover, she did not file any police reports. The inspector also said that while Brignone said Ellul allegedly wanted to take revenge on the Agius brothers, she could not recall which area or locality they had allegedly scouted. The woman said that Agius lived in an area full of CCTV but the police could not proceed further. “He [Ellul] always denied his involvement,” Camilleri said, adding that what Brignone said had said on Ellul fleeing to Italy did not make sense. “If anyone wants to abscond they do not go to Italy but choose a country where there is no mutual extradition agreement. From Italy, you can easily bring them over to face charges in Malta,” Camilleri explained. The police were never informed about illegal phones being found in the possession of the Degiorgio brothers while in prison and all their phone calls from the prison phone had been listened to and there was nothing worth flagging. “We took action on the information we had on Ellul and nothing came out,” Camilleri said. Darmanin then asked him about a declaration Robert Agius made on January 31, 2024. Agius reportedly claimed that Vincent Cucciardi was offered €40,000 in drugs by Ellul to say that Agius placed the bomb. Camilleri confirms that Cucciardi and Juanito Jimenez were investigated in connection with the claim but the investigation resulted in the negative. Lawyer Amadeus Cachia cross-examined the witness on behalf of Vella, who also asked him similar questions on Ellul. The lawyer then asked whether the police sent for Alfred Degiorgio, when investigating Ellul, to which the witness replied that he did not send for him but could not testify about what others did in the investigation. On Monday, Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi took the stand. Curmi wrote a report analysing whether the bombs placed between 2014 and 2018 were linked, and had analysed the remains of the bomb in a bid to understand how they were manufactured. The brigadier explained that very particular pieces were identified in the remains in three – the one which maimed Romeo Bone in Msida, the one used in Caruana Galizia’s assassination and the bomb which targeted Ellul – suggested that they were linked in manufacturing. There are three types of bombs or improvised explosive devices, Curmi told the jury, saying that these could be either timed, victim-operated and command. The timed would be connected to a clock or mobile phone and detonates at a specific moment in time. The second category would detonate after detecting movement and the third is self-explanatory. Curmi found no firing switch in the 2018 bomb which caused injuries to Ellul. He explained that this could mean that it was either placed at the farmhouse and detonated when Ellul entered the property, or else someone else activated when he entered the evidence or it was his own bomb. In his testimony, the brigadier underlined that there were different possibilities and could establish whether for example that Ellul was injured due to a premature explosion. Madam Justice Edwina Grima is presiding over the trial by jury. Prosecutors Godwin Cini, Danika Vella and Anthony Vella are prosecuting on behalf of the AG Office. Lawyer Nicholas Mifsud is assisting Adrian Agius. Lawyers Ishmael Psaila and Amadeus Cachia are assiting Jamie Vella. Lawyers Alfred Abela and Rene Darmanin are assisting Robert Agius. • "description": "The stabbing incident happened in Triq Santa Rita in Paceville. Photo: Googlemaps",
      • "content": "Two out of three teenagers have admitted their role in a fight in Paceville in which three UK nationals were stabbed in what the prosecution described as a “deliberate” attack. The took place on Sunday at 4am on Triq Santa Rita in St Julian’s. A 17-year old unemployed youth from Birkirkara and an 18-year old salesman from St Paul's Bay pleaded guilty while an 18-year old unemployed man from Msida pleaded not guilty to the charges. Initially the police reported that four people had been stabbed and two arrested, but it eventually transpired that one of the suspected victims was one of the aggressors. Prosecuting inspector Jonathan Cassar explained that the police reported to the scene after being informed about a fight in which a knife was used. The police found three British nationals with visible injuries on their face. The officers found a commotion and one of the 18-year-olds had a wound in his hand with the police thinking he was one of the alleged victims. The officers found the 17-year-old with a knife in his hand which was taken away and arrested another 18-year-old from Msida. The minor was taken to Mater Dei Hospital and the other man was taken to the health centre. A passer-by provided the police with a video showing the altercation. From the footage it emerged that the injured 18-year-old from St Paul’s Bay was one of the alleged aggressors and while he is seen holding the 17-year-old from stabbing the victims, he threw punches at the victims. The other 18-year-old whom the police thought was the victim was arrested later. The 17-year-old alone was accused of causing grievous injuries to three UK nationals using a knife. The other two 18-year-olds were accused of causing the same victims’ grievous injuries without using a knife. The Msida man was accused of being in possession of cocaine. All three were accused of accidental affray, of breaking one of the victims' teeth and breaching public peace. Lawyer Yanika Bugeja told the court that in the case of her client, the 18-year old from St Paul's Bay, a probation order would be suitable. She also highlighted that he was the least involved in the altercation and had fully cooperated with the police. The lawyer also insisted that the man needs some guidance in his life and a prison sentence would not help in achieving that. Prosecutor Jurgen Dalli said it would defer to the court on punishment, but insisted that the teenager pays a third of the expenses and damages to the victim. “What damages?” the defence asked. Inspector Cassar explained that during the fight one of the victim’s denture was broken. The victim was in hospital and the damages have not been quantified yet. After hearing the submissions on punishment, the court ruled that the man should be given another chance with the hope that he learns from this incident. It also encouraged him to stabilise his life and stay away from criminality since he has a full life to live. The court handed down a combination order: a three-year probation order and 60 hours of community service. A restraining order was issued in favour of the victims for the period of three years. Since the inquiry is not yet closed, the court stated the man should pay a third of the court expenses once these are established. Lawyer Franco Debono summoned the accused’s father to the stand. The man confirmed that he was willing to supervise him and ensure that he is on the right track. The man explained that both he and his wife are sick, however, nearly all of his children live at home with him. Inspector Jonathan Cassar cross-examined the witness, hinting that the youth was involved in other fights in the past. Debono objected and said: “The witness just informed the court that his wife is ill”. Cassar cut him off saying “it is useless to shout and show off. These antics do not work on me.” The defence lawyer, visibly angry, reminded the court that the man has a right not to testify against his son if this would incriminate him. He insisted that he only summoned the witness to testify on the address. Cassar quoted a bail decree given in criminal proceedings against Mohammed Ali Ahmed El Mushraty, better known as “Lilu King”, in which the interest of protecting society was given weight. “We’ve seen the footage of the incident. Society would not be safe if he is released on bail at this stage. He needs to be given treatment,” Cassar said, adding that this was a deliberate attack by the 17-year-old using a knife. “It is scary. Such behaviour is unacceptable and one cannot wake up and decide to stab three people. While he is still 17 his attitude and behaviour certainly aren’t,” the inspector said. Debono objected to the arguments being made noting that his client was still a minor while El Mushraty was not. “Does the state not have enough tools to ensure that he is placed on the right path?” Debono asked. The court granted the minor bail not because he is still a minor but in view of his early admission. “The court does not take such incidents nicely and minors are not automatically given bail,” Magistrate Lara Lanfranco said. The minor was granted bail against a €3,000 deposit and a €7,000 personal guarantee. The boy was ordered to sign the bail book three times a week and a curfew was also imposed. The court also issued a treatment order and a provisional supervision order. A protection order was issued in favour of the victims. His case will now proceed before the Juvenile Court. Lawyer Martina Herrera requested bail on behalf of her client, the 18-year old man from Msida, and argued that the teenager cooperated fully with the police. She also highlighted that in the eventuality he admits to the charges at a later stage, the defence would be asking for a fine in the case of simple possession of cocaine. The prosecution objected saying that in view of the fact the co-accused admitted to the charges, they would be later admitted as prosecution witnesses once the judgment becomes final. There are also other eyewitnesses in the case. Herrera rebutted that argument underlining the man has a clean criminal record and should benefit from bail. The court denied the man bail and he was remanded in custody. It also ordered a ban on the publication of names. AG lawyers Jurgen Dalli and Miryea Mifsud prosecuted assisted by police inspectors Jonathan Cassar and Nico Zarb. Lawyers Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit appeared for the 17-year-old. Lawyers José Herrera and Martina Herrera appeared for the 18-year-old who pleaded not guilty. Legal aid lawyer Yanika Bugeja assisted the 18-year-old man who admitted. • "description": "Arts Minister Owen Bonnici (inset) said it was too early to understand how Donald Trump's tariffs on films will affect Malta's film industry.",
      • "content": "There are currently more questions than answers about how new US tariffs on foreign-made films will affect Malta, Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said on Monday. Speaking to journalists outside Parliament, Bonnici stressed that it was too early to determine the local implications of the sweeping tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. On Sunday Trump announced he was imposing a 100 per cent tariff on all films made outside the country, citing concerns that Hollywood was being “devastated” by American filmmakers working abroad. “I saw what diverse authorities in the film industry from around the world had to say on this, and so far I have heard a number of questions,” Bonnici said. “Questions like: What does this mean exactly? How will this work? What will be subject to the tariffs, and what will be exempt?” He added that even some US officials were sceptical. “A governor in America questioned whether this can happen at all,” Bonnici said, referring to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called Trump “grossly incompetent” when asked about the new policy. A spokesperson for Newsom later raised doubts over whether the president has the legal authority to enact the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. “We are still gathering information,” Bonnici said, “but what is for sure is that we will be proactive and ensure that what is working successfully in our country will continue to be successful.” In a statement, the Ministry for Culture reiterated its commitment to the local film sector, “The film industry is very important for our country and for all those who work in it, and we are determined to keep making it stronger. We are attentively following all developments as they unfold.” The controversial announcement comes amid growing criticism of the White House’s trade policies. In his statement on the social platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: \"I am authorising the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100 per cent tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands.\" Malta has long served as a backdrop for numerous American productions. One of the latest to be filmed on the island is the survival thriller . You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the link in the footer of our emails. We use as our marketing platform.

Qual será a segurança do desfile?
