      • "content": "LONDON :As Arsenal's players performed a lap of appreciation for their fans after a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United that all-but secured runners-up spot in the Premier League on Sunday it felt like a bit of an anti-climax. Declan Rice's superb goal in the 55th minute secured the win, only Arsenal's second in the last seven in the league, meaning the unthinkable possibility of them failing to finish in the top five had been banished. Barring defeat by bottom club Southampton next week and Manchester City scoring an avalanche of goals in their final two games, Arsenal will finish second for the third season running. The previous two seasons had seen them push Manchester City all the way, especially last year when the title was only decided on the final day. Arteta's side earned 84 and 89 points in those pursuits of City but this season their chase of Liverpool evaporated early and they can only get 74. Defeat by Newcastle in the League Cup semi-finals stung but not as much as the one to Paris St Germain in the Champions League semis. Spaniard Arteta sounded emotional and drained as he addressed the fans on the pitch after the final whistle, although not all stayed on to listen. \"We had a dream, it was to be here or in a week's time and bring the big trophies to you guys and we couldn't do it for many circumstances,\" said Arteta, who has managed only one FA Cup triumph since taking charge in 2019. \"We need to make sure that chasing a dream doesn't get blurry and make sure we chase the dream with positivity and enthusiasm for next season.\" Arsenal have clearly made progress under Arteta, re-establishing themselves in the Champions League in which they will start a third successive campaign in September. But with the likes of Newcastle ending their decades-long wait for silverware this season, Crystal Palace winning the FA Cup and north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United battling out next week's Europa League final, Arteta needs no reminding that he must start delivering. \"We have to start creating our own history here in this stadium and we started this season,\" he said. \"There is much more to come and it won't be easy. \"These players have the talent. We need to rest and finish at Southampton and then go on holiday.\" Captain Martin Odegaard, who laid on Rice's goal, also spoke about Arsenal's need to take the next step. \"We can be proud of what we've done, especially in the Champions League, we had a great run there and some great experiences,\" the Norwegian said. \"But we have to accept we haven't been good enough in the league, but we have to take all experiences, good and bad, take them into next season and be better. \"We have to feel that pain of not winning and take it to next season and come back stronger and bring the club some trophies next season.\"",

      • "content": "JAIPUR: Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai marked the restart of the Indian Premier League with a fine all-round contribution as Punjab Kings closed in on a play-off spot with a 10-run win over Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. It was the first completed match since the resumption of the T20 tournament which had been paused because of the latest India-Pakistan conflict . Saturday's scheduled return ended in a washout with the game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders abandoned without a ball being bowled. The weather was more clement in Jaipur as Punjab posted 219-5 when they elected to bat first in high-scoring match. Left-handed Nehal Wadhera top-scored with 70 off 37 balls before Shashank Singh made the team finish strong with his unbeaten 59. Omarzai boosted the total with his unbeaten nine-ball 21 before he returned with two key wickets to restrict Rajasthan to 209-7. Punjab are second in the 10-team table topped by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Both teams are on 17 points in 12 matches. Impact substitute Harpreet Brar stood out with figures of 3-22 with his left-arm spin and South African left-arm quick Marco Jansen took two wickets in the final over when Rajasthan needed 22 for a win. Explosive opening knocks by Yashasvi Jaiswal and 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi went in vain after the two left-handers fired Rajasthan to 89-1 in the first six overs. Jaiswal hit a 25-ball 50 and Suryavanshi made 40 off 15 balls. Suryavanshi, who hit an IPL century in 35 balls last month to shatter records, hammered the opposition bowlers for four fours and four sixes. Punjab introduced spin in the fifth over and Brar dismissed both openers in quick succession, Suryavanshi chipping a leading edge to mid-off and Jaiswal, just after he had passed 50, failing to clear Mitch Owen at long-off. The chase took another hit when skipper Sanju Samson fell for 20 off pace bowler Omarzai, who later removed the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer for 11. Dhruv Jurel made a valiant 53 off 31 deliveries but fell to Jansen in the final over as he failed to meet the increasing asking rate. Earlier Punjab's top three fell cheaply as Australian batsman Owen's IPL debut ended with a two-ball duck and Punjab slumped to 34-3. The mercury in the afternoon soared above 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit) when Wadhera steadied the innings and hit back with his attacking play as he put on 67 with skipper Shreyas Iyer, who made 30. Iyer fell but Wadhera kept up the charge with Shashank, who hit five fours and three sixes in his 30-ball knock. Wadhera departed in the 16th over but Shashank and Omarzai added 60 off 24 balls. Since the pause in the IPL, the tournament has been rescheduled with the final now set to take place on June 3.",

      • "content": "IMOLA, Italy :Max Verstappen won Sunday's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix with a dominant drive after a bold first lap move around the outside of McLaren's Formula One leader and pole-sitter Oscar Piastri. There is often a fine line between hero and zero but, fully committed and with the Australian braking slightly early, Verstappen nailed it. \"The start was pretty average. It was the first corner, and I think maybe Oscar was more focused on (Mercedes rival George) Russell and he left the slightest of gaps and Max just sent it,\" said Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. \"It was kind of 'win it or bin it'\" \"He's just so good in that situation where he just sees a gap and it's so decisive for him,\" continued Horner, whose team were celebrating their 400th grand prix since their debut in 2005. The win was Verstappen's second of the season, both somewhat against the odds with champions McLaren very much the favourites. Piastri and teammate Lando Norris had been one-two in all three practice sessions at Imola and the Australian also secured pole position. McLaren, now a hefty 132 points clear of second-placed Mercedes after seven races, had won five of six going into the Imola weekend. Verstappen has now won four races in a row in Imola, an achievement unmatched by any other driver, and he also secured Red Bull's 100th fastest lap in F1. From Red Bull's 400 races, he has won 65. \"Before I got here this weekend, I didn’t really have a lot of hope that we could actually win a race here,\" he told reporters. \"But then I think from yesterday onwards, the car was more competitive over one lap and luckily also today. \"As soon as I braked late and then came off the brakes, I felt like, OK, there might be a move on. So, I just carried the speed in. And, luckily, it basically was sticking. It's not an easy move to make, but luckily, everything went well.\" Verstappen said Red Bull's form was still very track specific, however. \"Every time that we have been really competitive, it’s been high-speed tracks, high-speed corners. We still have work to do, but I do think it’s been a very positive weekend for us,\" he added.",

      • "content": "LIVERPOOL, England :After all the emotional build-up to Everton's heart-wrenching farewell game at their beloved Goodison Park, manager David Moyes was concerned the moment might be too much for his team. He need not have worried as his players handled the occasion with ease, Iliman Ndiaye scoring twice as they beat relegated Southampton 2-0 on Sunday as the stadium known as the Grand Old Lady hosted its final Premier League game after 133 years. \"I was worried today. Everybody's been talking about this for so long,\" Moyes told reporters. \"The scenes outside the stadium were incredible, really. It felt like a club which is needing some big days, some big things in the future. So let's hope this is the start of it. \"But I tried to make a point to the players that what couldn't happen was that we left here not finishing it off right. (But) we've done the job which we needed. We've got 45 points (and stand 13th in the league table). \"The pressure was off the players today because of that (being clear of relegation), but it was also on because of the occasion, because of the greats who were sitting watching them.\" Dozens of Everton icons, including Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson, were at Goodison to take part in a post-game celebration that had fans in their seats - some singing, others sobbing - long after the final whistle blew. \"I've been here a while and I know what it means. It's been a great stadium,\" said 62-year-old Scot Moyes, who managed Everton from 2002-2013 before rejoining the club this year. \"Some questions (about the last game at Goodison) make me think, 'My goodness, this is difficult to take some of these,'\" he added. \"I think more the feeling that there might be a club which is coming back together, signs that before there was a real breakup of a sort, of a love affair with the supporters, the players, the club, the owners. So we're all trying to get back ... together.\" Everton end the season at Newcastle United on May 25, and then will move into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the next campaign. The club announced earlier this week that their women's team, who play in the Women's Super League, would make a permanent move to Goodison from next season.",

      • "content": "CHARLOTTE, North Carolina :Scottie Scheffler will look to put the finishing touches on a third career major title when he sets off in the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club with a three-shot lead over Swede Alex Noren. World number one Scheffler is scheduled to head out in the day's final pairing with Noren at 2:40 p.m. ET (1840 GMT) with forecasts calling for breezy conditions and mostly cloudy skies. Scheffler emerged atop the leaderboard late in Saturday's third round with a scintillating finish that saw him cover the last five holes in five under, a stretch that included a tap-in eagle at the par-four 14th hole. \"I have a good opportunity to go out there and try and win the golf tournament,\" Scheffler said after the third round. \"But it's going to take another really good round. \"There's a lot of great players chasing me on the leaderboard and someone is going to put up a great round and it's up to me to go out there and have another really good round and finish off the tournament.\" Noren is making only his second start of the year after sitting out seven months with tail bone and tendon issues and is seeking his first major title in his 40th start in one of golf's blue-riband events. Sitting four shots off the pace in a two-way share of third place were Davis Riley and fellow American J.T. Poston while Spaniard Jon Rahm was a further shot back with South Korean Kim Si-woo and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas. Lurking six shots behind Scheffler is a group of five that includes U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. The pursuers all have their work cut out as the unflappable Scheffler, twice Masters champion, has closed out each of the last seven 54-hole leads he has held on the PGA Tour. According to Elias Sports Bureau, in the previous 106 PGA Championships only 16 golfers have entered the final round trailing by three or more strokes and won the Wanamaker. The most recent was Justin Thomas who came back from seven shots in 2022. Rory McIlroy, who made the cut on the number in his first major since completing the career Grand Slam at last month's Masters, went out with the early starters and bogeyed his opening hole.",

      • "content": "IMOLA, Italy :Max Verstappen took a dominant victory at Imola on Sunday to celebrate Red Bull's 400th grand prix and end Formula One leader Oscar Piastri's run of three wins in a row for McLaren. Australian Piastri started on pole and finished third, overtaken by teammate Lando Norris on fresher tyres seven laps from the end, with his championship lead cut from 16 points to 13 after seven rounds. The victory was the 65th of Verstappen's career, second of the season and the four-times world champion's fourth in a row at the Italian circuit near Bologna after wins in 2021, 2022 and 2024. There was no race in 2023 due to flooding. \"The start itself wasn't particularly great but I was still on the outside line, the normal line, so I was like 'well I'm going to try and send it around the outside' and it worked really well,\" said the Dutch driver. \"Of course, that unleashed our pace because when we were in the lead, the car was good. I could look after my tyres.\" Piastri had started the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix as favourite for a fourth win in a row, and fifth in seven races, but lost out as Verstappen went around the outside into turn one on the opening lap and pulled away. A virtual safety car halfway through the race also worked against him. A late real safety car bunched up the field but Verstappen, now only nine points behind Norris, was never in any real danger from the McLarens and took the chequered flag 6.109 seconds clear of Norris. \"We had a good little battle at the end between Oscar and myself which was tense, but always good fun,\" said the Briton. \"A good race. For us as a team, second and third is great. Of course you would love to be up there fighting against Max but they were too good for us today.\" Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton finished a surprising fourth in his first race in Italy for Ferrari after starting 12th following a qualifying nightmare. Alex Albon was fifth for Williams with Charles Leclerc sixth for Ferrari. George Russell started third but ended up seventh while Carlos Sainz was eighth on another great afternoon for resurgent Williams. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar was ninth and Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for Red Bull after starting in the pit lane following a big crash in Saturday's qualifying.",

      • "content": "IMOLA, Italy :Max Verstappen took a dominant victory at Imola on Sunday to celebrate Red Bull's 400th grand prix and end Formula One leader Oscar Piastri's run of three wins in a row for McLaren. Australian Piastri started on pole but finished third, overtaken at the start around the outside in a brilliant move by Verstappen and then passed by teammate Lando Norris on fresher tyres seven laps from the end. Piastri's championship lead over Norris was trimmed from 16 points to 13 after seven rounds. The victory was Verstappen's 65th, second of the season and the four-times world champion's fourth in a row at the Italian circuit near Bologna after 2021, 2022 and 2024. I could look after my tyres.\" Team boss Christian Horner described Verstappen's attitude as \"win it or bin it\". BRAKED TOO EARLY Piastri had started the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix as favourite for a fourth win in a row, and fifth in seven races but events went against him. A virtual safety car, triggered by Esteban Ocon stopping his Haas halfway through the race, came after his first early pitstop. \"It's never a great day when you start first and finish third,\" said Piastri, who felt he had opened the door to Verstappen by braking too early. \"You're going to have tough days in the championship, and this is clearly one of them. So as long as we learn the lessons, that's all I can ask.\" A later safety car after Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli's home debut ended by the side of the track, bunched up the field again with Verstappen and Norris stopping for fresh tyres and Piastri staying out. Verstappen, now only nine points behind Norris, was never in any real danger when the safety car returned to the pits and he took the chequered flag 6.109 seconds clear of the Briton. \"We had a good little battle at the end between Oscar and myself which was tense, but always good fun,\" said Norris, who confirmed there had been no team orders for Piastri to cede position. \"A good race. For us as a team, second and third is great. Of course you would love to be up there fighting against Max but they were too good for us today.\" Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton finished a surprising fourth in his first race in Italy for Ferrari after starting 12th following a qualifying nightmare and then making the tyre strategy work for him. The 40-year-old, winner of the Shanghai sprint, passed teammate Charles Leclerc and was closing on Piastri as he scored his best result so far this season in a regular grand prix. \"I've always loved when you're fighting from further back and coming through,\" he said. \"That's always such a better feeling than starting first and finishing first.\" UNLUCKY ALONSO Alex Albon was fifth for Williams with Leclerc sixth after having to hand back the place for forcing the Thai off the track. George Russell started third but ended up seventh while Carlos Sainz was eighth for resurgent Williams. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar was ninth and Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for Red Bull after starting in the pit lane following a big crash in Saturday's qualifying. Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto, making his Alpine debut after replacing dropped Australian Jack Doohan, started and finished 16th. Aston Martin's promise, after Fernando Alonso qualified fifth, faded as the safety cars played havoc with the team's strategy. \"I'm the unluckiest driver in the world,\" said the 43-year-old double world champion, who has yet to score this season and finished 11th.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Lion City Sailors' fairytale voyage came to an end on Sunday (May 18) after they lost to United Arab Emirates side Sharjah in the AFC Champions League Two (ACL2) final. Sharjah won the game 2-1 at a packed Bishan Stadium, with a goal from Marcus Meloni sealing the win. Firas Ben Larbi had earlier put the UAE side ahead before the Sailors' Maxime Lestienne levelled the tie in injury time. The Sailors had overcome considerable odds and several top sides, such as Japan's Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Australia's Sydney FC, to reach the final. They were crowned Singapore Premier League champions on Saturday and can still complete a domestic double should they lift the Singapore Cup, where they are slated to face Brunei DPMM in the semi-finals. Sharjah are second in the UAE Pro League. They beat Saudi Pro League side Al-Taawoun 2-1 on aggregate to book their spot in Sunday's decider. Prior to the final, Sharjah had expressed reservations about the decider being hosted at the Jalan Besar Stadium, claiming that it \"does not meet the aspirations of the fans and stakeholders\". The 55,000-seater National Stadium was ruled out as a venue as it had been booked well in advance for Lady Gaga's Lion City Mayhem concerts on May 18, 19, 21 and 24. This meant that the final was played at Bishan Stadium with improvements undertaken such as the building of three new stands to increase its capacity by more than three times to accommodate about 10,000 spectators. The Sailors booked their place in the final after beating Australia's Sydney FC 2-1 over two legs. In the quarters, the Singaporean side beat Sanfrecce Hiroshima 4-1 on aggregate. All seemed lost for the Sailors after they lost to the Japanese giants in the first leg of the quarter-finals 6-1. But the result was later chalked off, and they were awarded a 3-0 win by the Asian footballing body, as Sanfrecce had fielded a player who was supposed to be serving a three-match suspension. The Sailors then registered a 1-1 draw in the second leg at home. Previously known as the AFC Cup, the ACL2 is the second-tier Asian club football tournament with a revamped format. The last time a Singapore side reached the knockout stages of an AFC club competition was in 2018, when Home United, as the Sailors were previously known, got as far as the inter-zone semi-finals in the 2018 edition of the AFC Cup.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - IANS) New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) B Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill produced another magnificent batting performance by hitting an unbeaten 108 and 93 respectively to help Gujarat Titans' seal their IPL 2025 playoffs spot with a ten-wicket thrashing of Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. After KL Rahul's majestic 112 not out off 65 balls, laced with 14 fours and four sixes, carried DC to 199/3, Sudharsan and Gill made the chase a literal stroll in the park and did not even seem to break a sweat by completing the chase in 19 overs through their risk-free and conventional shots. While Sudharsan finished on 108 not out off 61 balls – his second IPL century laced with 12 fours and four sixes, Gill was unbeaten on 93 off 53 balls – hitting three fours and seven sixes. The dominating win also takes GT into the playoffs for the third time and saw them take the top spot in the points table, thus asserting their status as the team to beat in this season. The result also sees Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings qualify for the playoffs, leaving DC, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in the fight for the remaining playoffs spot. Sudharsan, who came in as Impact Player for Prasidh Krishna, hit the ground running by pulling Axar Patel for four before Gill ended the opening over with a six muscled over deep mid-wicket fence. In the next over, it was all Sudharsan's way as he hit T Natarajan for six, before slashing, punching and edging him for three boundaries. Sudharsan then cut Axar twice for boundaries, before slashing off Mustafizur Rahman, as GT ended power-play at 59/0. After that, Sudharsan survived two reviews, including one on umpire's call, before sweeping Axar for four to bring up his fifty in 30 balls. Gill stepped up by slog-sweeping Axar for six, before dancing down the pitch to slam Kuldeep Yadav for a maximum down the ground. After being almost caught off a slower ball off Chameera at cover, Gill brought up his fifty off 33 balls with a straight drive and then left everyone jaw-dropped with a beautiful pick-up six, before Sudharsan slapped one over cover for four. Gill then brought out a copybook style lofted shot to hit Vipraj Nigam for six, before bringing up 150 of his opening stand with Sudharsan. DC's constant bowling changes didn't work as there was no stopping a dominating Sudharsan – sweeping and guiding Mustafizur for successive boundaries, before drilling a straight drive off Natarajan. Gill again matched up to him by cutting and flicking Natarajan for four and six respectively. Sudharsan brought up his century off 56 balls by lofting Kuldeep down the ground for six, following which he pumped his fist and looked intently at the GT dugout. Sudharsan fittingly finished off the chase with a pulled six off Nigam, as GT again came out on top, thanks to their efficient in-form openers. Previously, Rahul was at his clean and pristine best in strokeplay, especially when hitting through the line to hit his fifth IPL hundred. He also became the first ever batter to score IPL centuries for three different teams – having done this previously for Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. He found great support from other batters - Abishek Porel sizzled with a 19-ball 30, skipper Axar Patel hit two fours and a six in his 16-ball 25 and Tristan Stubbs was unbeaten on 21 off 10 balls. Batting first, Rahul found two boundaries in the opening over off Mohammed Siraj – one via a misfield at deep third man, while the other came off a pristine back foot cut past point. With Faf du Plessis struggling for timing against GT's pacers and holed out to mid-on off Arshad Khan, there was no stopping Rahul. When Siraj pitched it short and outside off-stump, Rahul was quick to cut past backward point and pull over mid-on for two boundaries. Against a returning Kagiso Rabada, Rahul was at his terrific best – moving slightly across to get inside line of the short ball and played a swivelled across over square leg for a six. Two balls later, Rabada offered room and Rahul, who also became the fastest Indian batter and third overall by innings to complete 8000 runs in men's T20s, reached out to carve him over point, before standing tall to launch the pacer for a towering six down the ground, as 17 runs came off final power-play over, with DC closing the phase at 45/1. Rahul was then proactive in rotating the strike off Krishna and Rashid Khan, before sweeping the latter for a boundary to bring up his fifty off 35 balls, with the home crowd chanting his name loudly. Luck was also on Rahul's side as R Sai Kishore couldn't reach out in time to catch his top-edge on sweep and conceded a boundary. Rahul left everyone jaw-dropped by backing away and lofting a half-volley from Rabada down the ground for six. Rahul then pressed the accelerator button by hitting Kishore for a hat-trick of boundaries – unfurling a powerful straight drive which ran through the bowler's legs, a flick being parried over boundary rope by Rabada and edge running through vacant first slip. Despite not getting much strike in the last four overs, Rahul unfurled a lofted off-drive against Prasidh for six, before pulling him powerfully to get his century and soaking in the applause from a joyous home crowd. Rahul applied finishing touches by reverse-paddling and driving Siraj for two boundaries, though it wasn't enough to prevent GT from entering the playoffs. Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 199/3 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 112 not out, Abishek Porel 30; Arshad Khan 1-7, Prasidh Krishna 1-40) lost to Gujarat Titans 205/0 in 19 overs (B Sai Sudharsan 108 not out, Shubman Gill 93 not out) by ten wickets MENAFN18052025000231011071ID1109563668 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "( MENAFN - Jordan Times)NEW DELHI - Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished batsmen of his generation and is a hero to hundreds of millions of Indian fans. An inspiring leader and former captain, he retired from Test cricket on Monday with 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, scoring 30 centuries and 31 fifties. The Indian great played 123 matches since his Test debut in 2011. His highest score was 254 not out. The 36-year-old Kohli was part of the \"Fab Four\" quartet of batsmen who dominated Test cricket over the past decade, alongside Steve Smith of Australia, Kane Williamson of New Zealand and Joe Root of England. Nicknamed \"King Kohli\", he was India's batting backbone across three international formats and ended his Twenty20 career with a match-winning innings in the World Cup final victory in Barbados last year. Kohli then walked away from the shortest format along with captain Rohit Sharma who, like Kohli, is expected to continue playing 50-over cricket after retiring from Tests. Kohli's declining form in the five-day game may have been a factor in his decision to call it a day. After averaging close to 55 at his peak between 2011 and 2019, the figure dropped to 32.56 over the past 24 months. \"Virat never played for records. They happened as he progressed,\" Kohli's biographer Vijay Lokapally told AFP. \"His batting skills and work ethic combined to create magic. \"Longevity leads to milestones and that is what Virat has inherited from stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar.\" Fierce competitor Kohli's huge popularity among Indian and global cricket fans is reminiscent of that once enjoyed by his idol Tendulkar. The number India 18 jersey worn by Kohli is by far the most popular piece of merchandise worn around grounds across the country. He picked the number after making his ODI debut on August 18, 2008, and also to honour his father, Prem, who passed away on December 18, 2006. With more than 26,000 international runs and a total of 80 centuries across the three formats, comparisons with Tendulkar are obvious but Lokapally disagrees. \"He dislikes this comparison. He has his identity, Sachin Tendulkar has his. Their styles differ,\" said Lokapally. \"Sachin has faced some ferocious bowlers. Virat has dominated too.\" A fierce competitor, Kohli has never shied away from a battle on the field which further endeared him to Indian fans, who regularly invade the pitch to touch the feet of their icon and take selfies with him. Underlining his immense popularity, Kohli has 271 million followers on Instagram. Kohli became India's most successful Test captain with 40 wins and 17 defeats in 68 matches. The next best are Mahendra Singh Dhoni with 27 wins from 60 and Sourav Ganguly with 21 from 49. He is also fabulously wealthy, leading India's list of highest-paid athletes with earnings of $33.9 million, mainly from brand endorsements, according to analysts Sportico's 2022 list. From 2021 Kohli's form started to desert him and he went more than two years without scoring a hundred. He resigned the T20 captaincy in late 2021 and was soon after sacked as 50-over captain. In 2022, Kohli gave up the Test reins and later talked about his mental struggles as the runs dried up, including how he had been \"snappy\" around his actress wife Anushka Sharma. Freed from the burden of captaincy, Kohli struck his first hundred for 1,020 days at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Having won the one-day World Cup in 2011, Kohli has one ambition still to be achieved. He is yet to lift the Indian Premier League title despite having featured for Royals Challengers Bengaluru in every campaign since the competition's inaugural season in 2008. • "content": "( MENAFN - Jordan Times) NEW DELHI – Toward the end of the ancient Indian epic the Mahabharata, Krishna's Yadava clan self-destructs. Many dark omens presage their downfall: nature behaves erratically and pests multiply. Sin, deception, and violence proliferate, eroding trust and solidarity. Clan members humiliate and insult wise elders. When Krishna's extended family goes on a picnic, the men get drunk, argue, and attack each other, until eventually all of them are dead. This cautionary tale has gained new resonance as geopolitical tensions, including in South Asia, escalate, and many countries embrace protectionist policies. US President Donald Trump's second administration has contributed significantly to the current fragmentation and disorder. But other wealthy countries have exacerbated the situation by failing to show any real solidarity in response to Trump's hostile policies. The lack of development cooperation is a prime example of this growing appetite for mutual assured destruction. To be sure, aid from donor countries was already declining, and recent events have exposed the system's injustices. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted Western governments' greed, undermining others' trust in their global leadership. Moreover, the fact that these governments have directed most of their dwindling foreign-aid budgets to Ukraine since Russian's 2022 invasion, diverting funds away from other war-torn and desperately poor countries, has underscored the largely self-serving approach to such“charity” flows. Still, it is surprising, and dispiriting, that other donor countries have not stepped up after Trump terminated almost all US foreign-aid funding and programming. This would have been the obvious thing to do, not necessarily out of solidarity, but simply because of geopolitical self-interest. For starters, Trump's indiscriminate attacks on allies and rivals alike have demonstrated the necessity of coordinated action, which requires building alliances, supporting multilateralism, and cultivating soft power. One easy and relatively cheap way to do that is by continuing to support multilateral institutions. Such funding may also defuse some of the anger that many people in the Global South feel about the Western world's complicity in the ongoing decimation and mass killings in Gaza. Moreover, the massive reduction in US direct aid and financing for international organizations will hinder the provision of global public goods, including health and climate stability. The concept of global public investment suggests that all countries have a stake in solving these challenges, and should thus contribute resources to addressing them, according to their means, and distribute the collected funds based on need and impact. But the response of most rich countries has so far been appalling. Instead of scaling up foreign assistance, several European governments have slashed it, citing the need to channel funds to defense investment. As a result, some of the most immediate needs that fall under a global public investment framework are going unmet. This is especially baffling because the amounts required to plug the development-financing hole left by the United States are so small as to be trivial. For example, Trump's withdrawal of the US from the World Health Organisation, which remains absolutely critical for managing global health threats, means that the WHO faces a $1.9 billion budget shortfall in 2026-27, a gap that rich countries and even most large middle-income countries could easily afford to fill. It's a similar story at other international organisations. The United Nations World Food Programme faces an estimated 40 per cent reduction in funding, equal to roughly $4 billion. The WFP, which served more than 100 million people in 2024 and won the Nobel Peace Prize five years ago, must now downsize its staff by nearly one-third (around 6,000 positions worldwide) and reduce the amount of life-saving food that it provides, because no other countries have offered to offset the shortfall. Similarly, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), which relied on the US for more than 40 per cent of its financing, will need to cut more than half of its workforce and reduce or eliminate some of its essential programs. (Switzerland and the United Kingdom, two other major UNAIDS funders, have likewise reduced their contributions). That could lead to six times more HIV infections and a 400 per cent increase in AIDS deaths by 2029, as well as the emergence of new strains, which would have negative repercussions for all countries. But the organization's budget gap is a modest $58 million, the same shortfall facing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which has to lay off 20 per cent of its staff. Given these minuscule sums, filling the gap left by the US would have a negligible fiscal impact on traditional donors and large middle-income countries. But only a handful of countries, like South Korea, have responded to the funding crisis, preventing essential organisations' collapse and enabling them to function properly, for now. If wealthier countries refuse to provide for the global common good, the multilateral system as we know it will not survive.

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan reiterated his call for electoral reforms on Sunday (May 18), in his first public remarks since the party's losses at the 2025 General Election. \"Rather than retreating, what we're going to be doing is embarking on this renew, rebuild, reignite campaign,\" he told reporters ahead of an appreciation dinner for SDP members. The opposition party lost in all four constituencies it contested in the election. Dr Chee narrowly missed out on becoming a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament after obtaining 46.82 per cent of the vote in Sembawang West SMC. The straight fight between Mr Chee and Ms Poh Li San of the People’s Action Party (PAP) was the third-closest contest of the election. On Sunday, Dr Chee outlined three major initiatives that the party would be working on, the first of which was an online petition on electoral reforms. The petition highlighted six \"urgent and meaningful\" changes that would ensure Singapore's political system \"reflects the highest standards of transparency, accountability and democratic integrity\". It called for the Elections Department to be removed from the Prime Minister's Office, to \"end gerrymandering\" and abolish the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system. The petition also said there should be a minimum three-week campaign period, a six-month gap between the announcement of new electoral boundaries and the dissolution of parliament, and a review of the Newspaper and Printing Presses Act in Singapore to allow media to be free and independent. Dr Chee said this year's polls were \"very much a smash-and-grab election\" by the ruling PAP. \"This whole campaign was just conducted in unseemly haste,\" he said. He added that the electorate hardly had time to grasp the \"weighty\" national concerns that affect Singapore's society before Polling Day arrived. \"This has been the feedback we've been getting over and over, especially if you're talking about younger voters,\" he said. By the time the voters start getting involved, they are \"being pushed\" to make decisions. Dr Chee emphasised that the petition is a \"non-partisan effort\". \"They are foundational principles of good governance and democratic integrity,\" he wrote on Change.org. \"Singapore is ready to take the next step forward in its political maturity by ensuring our elections are genuinely free and fair.\" SDP chairman Paul Tambyah said the online petition is just a starting point, and could develop into legal challenges. \"Hopefully we'll be able to sustain this momentum,\" he said, adding that the party is taking a multi-prong approach to the next five years. LAUNCH OF SOCIAL CO-OPERATIVE The second initiative that the SDP announced is the Orange and Teal Social Enterprise Co-operative, which aims to create a \"people-centric economic counterweight to the PAP-NTUC nexus\". Dr Chee said the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has \"lost its way\", but that Singapore has been \"dominated\" by the PAP and NTUC. He said the co-operative is meant to operate from the ground up and will aim to offer fair-wage employment, compared to the top-down approach taken by the ruling party and the labour movement. \"We're looking for Singaporeans to own a part of this business,\" he said. Those who register as members will pay a S$100 (US$77) fee. Its website said the co-operative wants to empower workers, freelancers, creatives, and small businesses in Singapore through shared ownership, community-driven innovation, and inclusive employment opportunities. GROWING INTEREST FROM YOUNG PEOPLE SDP also said it has seen an upsurge in interest from young people who want to be involved in the political process. \"We're going to tap into it,\" said Dr Chee, adding that some younger voters find the political process to be unsatisfactory. The party attributed part of the increased interest to TikTok and memes that caught the attention of voters. \"One thing that's been quite interesting that we have seen is that many young people, even people who are too young to vote, have been coming forward, expressing an interest,\" said Mr Ariffin Sha, who was part of an SDP team that contested Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. Many people felt that the election was too rushed and felt an \"innate sense of injustice\" when Bukit Batok SMC was \"wiped off the map\", he added. Young Democrat representative Shawal Yeo said he hoped the party could direct the energy of the young people in a constructive way. \"Don't get angry, get active,\" he said. Dr Tambyah said that at a training event held this weekend, many participants described themselves as previously \"politically apathetic\" and were in a political party office for the first time. \"There was a certain amount of fear that was in there, but it's this transformation from fear to hope, which is what we hope to do within the next five years,\" he said.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - Pajhwok Afghan News) HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A number of painters and miniature artists in western Herat province say the lack of a proper market for their artwork has severely impacted their economic situation. Several art galleries have shut down and some artists have been forced to stay away from their artistic pursuits. Artworks such as paintings, illumination (Tahzib), calligraphy and miniature art-once popular in the domestic market- have reportedly seen sales drop by up to 50 percent. Artists warn that this decline poses a serious threat to their professional lives. Akhtar Haidair, a veteran painter in the province, stands in a corner of his small gallery, gazing at the framed paintings around him. He remarks:“People used to enjoy art, they would buy paintings or at least visit galleries to appreciate the work. Now, hardly anyone visits. When there are no visitors, there are no sales-and for an artist, that means an empty table.” He says that declining public interest, lack of regular exhibitions, and indifference from the private sector have caused at least a 50 percent fall in the market for artworks. For those who have dedicated their entire lives to colour, design, and imagination, this stagnation is not just a financial problem but the loss of a piece of culture. Abdul Qadir Aslamzada, a miniature artist and calligrapher in Herat, shares a similar experience. He explains that there is currently no real market for artwork in the city, despite the significant time, energy, and materials they use in creating each pieces. “In the past, people evinced great interest in art and would purchase these works. Now, not only have purchases stopped, but even commissions have come to a complete halt,” he adds. “If the authorities do not take action, painting and miniature art will gradually fade into obscurity, and many artists will be compelled to abandon their work. I urge the public to at least buy one piece of art to help preserve this cultural heritage.” Alongside artists, cultural experts also stress the need for strong support from both the government and the public. Ahmad Zia Haqshenas, a university lecturer in Herat, says that organising international exhibitions is essential so that Afghan art can access global markets. He also urges the government to provide systematic support to local artists. In a conversation with Pajhwok, Haqshenas highlighted that currently, cheaper foreign artworks are being sold in local markets, making it harder for domestic artists to compete. Meanwhile, the Information and Culture Department has announced the opening of a permanent exhibition in Qala-e-Ikhtyaruddin to support local artists. Maulvi Hamidullah Ghayasi, head of the Culture and Art section at the department, said that they are working to create an attractive environment for both domestic and international tourists in the province. He noted that a permanent exhibition has been launched at Qala-e-Ikhtyaruddin through their initiative, allowing people to view and purchase artworks directly. He expressed hope that this would provide financial relief for artists. However, these efforts have yet to make a significant impact. Reduced purchasing power and a lack of effective financial support remain major obstacles to preserving and developing the art in the province. If these challenges persist, the future of traditional art in Herat may face serious jeopardy. kk/ma MENAFN18052025000174011037ID1109563542 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "( MENAFN - Pajhwok Afghan News) MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Health officials in northern Faryab province have expressed concern over an increasing number of measles cases in children and are urging families not to neglect vaccinating their children against the disease. Dr. Arash Agha, head of the pediatric department at the 100-bed hospital in Maimana, told Pajhwok Afghan News that measles remained common in Faryab not only this year but also last year. More than 40 children with measles are admitted to the pediatric ward daily, which is above the capacity of the ward, and most patients may be referred to other health centers, private hospitals, and neighboring provinces, he added. He attributed the reason behind the increasing measles cases to poor coverage of routine vaccination, lack of awareness and people's lack of referral to health centers, irresponsibility of vaccinators who do not cover their respective areas, and delays in implementing the nationwide campaign. Measles is a type of respiratory infection and its symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and skin problems in various parts of the body. Despite the availability of a vaccine, it is still one of the causes of death worldwide. Dr. Agha urged families to pay serious attention to administering measles vaccine to their children. Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim Karimi, chief physician at the provincial hospital, explained the hospital had a capacity of 100 beds and more than 140 children were admitted to the pediatric ward daily, most of them measles patients. Most of the severe measles patients are from remote districts and Ghormach district of western Badghis province, where there are no health facilities, he added. Maulvi Khan Agha Asad, acting director of Public Health Department, confirms that the number of measles cases and deaths in the province have increased compared to previous years. In the past, a general campaign was launched every five years, but since 2022, no general campaign has been carried out, and most children born between 2022 and 2025 have not been vaccinated. The lack of awareness among people about the importance of vaccination, the distance of health centers from villages, the lack of transportation, and the aversion of some families towards vaccination are factors contributing to the increase in measles cases. The acting director asked families to vaccinate their children against this dangerous disease. Halima, a resident of Khwaja Sabzposh district, explained her grandson contracted measles almost three weeks ago. He is in critical condition and he is hospitalized in Maimana Hospital, but doctors have recommended he should be transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the province for treatment. Meanwhile, Rawina, a resident of Qaisar district, said nine days ago her child contracted measles. Her condition worsened with each passing day, and she had to be shifted to the hospital. Seven months ago, she gave birth to her baby at a health center, but she has not been vaccinated once. hz/ma MENAFN18052025000174011037ID1109563540 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind.
