      • "content": "MILAN : Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has been declared fit to return from a hamstring injury but is set to start on the bench in their Champions League semi-final second leg at Inter Milan on Tuesday, manager Hansi Flick confirmed. The 36-year-old Polish striker, who has netted 40 goals for Barcelona in all competitions this season, had been sidelined for his club's last four games. After sustaining the injury during Barca's 4-3 victory against Celta Vigo on April 19, he missed their Copa del Rey final victory over rivals Real Madrid and the first leg of the Champions League semi against Inter. \"We've spoke yesterday and everything is going the right way, and (Lewandowski) is good. Much better than we expected, and he's ready for the bench. So when we need him, maybe he can come in,\" Flick told a press conference on Monday. Barcelona's hopes of reaching their first Champions League final in a decade are buoyed by Lewandowski's return, especially after an exhilarating 3-3 draw in the first leg. However, the team will be without key fullbacks Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, both sidelined with injuries. Flick did not reveal his plans to replace the injured duo, but he hinted at deploying centrebacks Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia or relying on youngsters Hector Fort or Gerard Martin in their natural positions. Kounde and Balde absences will pose a massive challenge for Flick with Barca struggling to stop Inter's counter-attacks in the first leg, mainly with Denzel Dumfries who was a constant menace from the right, scoring two goals and handing one assist. \"As a coaching staff, we analyse everything. We see how a player performed in each situation and after Wednesday maybe we will have to make some changes because we need to defend much better,\" Flick added. \"Football is really complex, so it has to do with everything. It has to with the player but we have to find the right idea of how we want to play, the match plan. Of course, the changes have to be good, but also the players have to show on the pitch who they are and what they are made of.\" Despite these challenges, Barcelona are chasing a treble, unbeaten domestically since late December and leading LaLiga with 79 points, four ahead of Real Madrid. After Tuesday's Champions League tie against Inter, they host Real in a crucial LaLiga clash that could effectively decide the league title on Sunday.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK :JPMorgan Chase's artificial intelligence tools enabled it to boost sales to wealthy clients and manage scores of requests from worried customers even during April's market rout, the bank's CEO of asset and wealth management said. The largest U.S. lender, along with its peers has been ramping up its use of AI. Goldman Sachs is rolling out a generative AI assistant to its bankers, traders and asset managers, while Morgan Stanley developed a chatbot for its financial advisers with OpenAI. JPMorgan's AI tools have supercharged the speed at which its bankers could provide research and investment advice to wealthy clients last month at a time when the U.S. tariff announcements erased trillions of dollars from the stock market. \"In the last few weeks, there have been several fluctuations in the market which are not in normal bite sizes, making it very complicated to think about all your clients and all the things required to do,\" Mary Erdoes said. The \"powerful\" AI tools helped advisors to quickly handle client requests by pulling data on their trading patterns and anticipating queries, she said. In the days surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff announcement last month, U.S. stock markets set a new record for single-day trading volume, and posted some of the sharpest intraday swings of the past 50 years. The volatility prompted individual investors to call their bankers seeking advice, Erdoes told Reuters. \"When you have a tool that pre-populates all the data and the movement in real time, while also remembering clients' old investment preferences and helps in tailoring a plan for them quickly, it also allows advisors to do much more,\" she added. JPMorgan's so-called Coach AI tool used by private client advisers is quicker at locating content and research to drive conversations with clients. \"Our advisors are finding the right information up to 95 per cent faster-which means they spend less time searching and more time engaging in meaningful conversations with clients,\" said Mike Urciuoli, chief information officer at JPMorgan asset and wealth management. \"It's a great example of how of AI isn't replacing human touch, it's enhancing it,\" Urciuoli added. ADDING CLIENTS The app will help advisers expand their client rosters by 50 per cent in the next three-to-five years by enabling them to take on more clients, with AI handling some of the other research-related work. JPMorgan Asset & Wealth Management also saw a 20 per cent year-over-year increase in gross sales between 2023-2024, with Gen AI-driven tools which has helped teams focus more effectively on high-impact client work, it said. \"AI has also been handling a lot of anticipatory work, allowing advisors to be prepared for what could have otherwise been a very stressful moment with market movements,\" Erdoes said. JPMorgan had a technology budget of $17 billion last year. The bank already has about 450 potential cases for which it could use AI, and CEO Jamie Dimon expects those potential applications to surge to 1,000 by next year, he said earlier this year. Portfolio managers in asset management are also using the AI tools, Erdoes said. The bank's GenAI toolkit which is now deployed on the desktops of more than 200,000 employees, more than half of whom use it several times a day, the bank said. The bank employs almost 320,000 people. \"We are trying to democratize AI and put it in the hands of more employees instead of a select group,\" Erdoes added. Harvard Business School recently published a case study on the potential of generative AI which included the tools being used by the 4,000 advisers serving JPMorgan's high-net-worth private bank clients to study its impact on the bank's business. The initiatives have already saved the bank nearly $1.5 billion through fraud prevention, personalization, trading, operational efficiencies and credit decisions, JPMorgan said.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK :The U.S. dollar was mostly lower against major currencies, including the yen and the euro, on Monday as markets weighed continued uncertainty from President Donald Trump's policies and their impact on the economy. The greenback slid to a fresh record low against the Taiwan dollar to 28.8150 amid speculation that Taiwan was letting its currency appreciate as part of a trade deal with the U.S., or at least was unwilling to intervene to stop it rising alongside sharp inflows in capital. Trump doubled down on tariff-driven policies during an interview on Sunday, reiterating that the duties on U.S. imports would eventually make Americans rich. He announced on Sunday a new 100 per cent tariff on films made outside the U.S. Markets have been affected by the fact that Trump is not leaving his stance that tariffs are important, said Juan Perez, director of trading at Monex USA in Washington. The dollar was down 0.79 per cent against the Japanese yen at 143.805. Against the Swiss franc, the dollar weakened 0.57 per cent to 0.822. Trump said he would not attempt to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, but repeated calls for lower interest rates and called Powell a \"stiff\". The Fed meets on Wednesday and is widely expected to leave rates steady following a solid March payrolls report. Perez said the U.S. dollar was being hurt the most by chaos in the markets. \"I think we're returning today to...this very sour mood and descent and this idea that overall you may not necessarily rely on American markets the way you used to. And that's been seen across Treasuries.\" Markets now imply only a 37 per cent chance of a Fed rate cut in June, down from 64 per cent a month ago. Goldman Sachs and Barclays both shifted their cut calls to July from June. The dollar trimmed its losses briefly against the yen after the Institute for Supply Management report for April showed a larger-than-expected pickup in growth in the U.S. services sector, which accounts for two-thirds of the American economy. Chinese onshore markets were closed but the yuan traded offshore hit its highest in almost six months at 7.1831 per dollar as investors wagered Beijing might let its currency strengthen as part of trade talks with Washington. The yuan was last up 0.23 per cent to 7.194 per dollar. In Europe, the euro was up 0.27 per cent at $1.133025 and the pound was up 0.28 per cent at $1.33050. The Bank of England will meet on Thursday and is widely expected to cut rates by a further 25 basis points to 4.25 per cent. Central banks in Norway and Sweden also meet this week and are expected to keep rates steady.",

      • "content": "SHEFFIELD, United Kingdom: Zhao Xintong is on the verge of becoming the first Chinese player to win the World Snooker Championship after the qualifier stormed into a 17-8 lead against Mark Williams in the final on Monday (May 5). Zhao needs to win one more frame in the evening session to clinch his historic title in the best-of-35 showpiece at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre. The 28-year-old had built an 11-6 lead on Sunday and, with the title in sight, he turned the screw on Williams in Monday's afternoon session. Zhao won four of the first five frames to move 15-7 ahead, raising the prospect of wrapping up the final with a session to spare. The Chinese sensation, who had a session left unused in his 17-7 semi-final rout of seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, was unable to achieve that feat this time as Williams briefly stopped the rot. But Williams' bid to become snooker's oldest world champion by lifting the trophy for a fourth time looks destined to end in failure. The 50-year-old Welshman was no match for Zhao's dynamic shot-making and relentless break-building as the Chinese star swept to the brink of snooker immortality. Zhao is only China's second World Championship finalist, emulating Ding Junhui's run to the 2016 showpiece. But while Ding was beaten by Mark Selby in the final nine years ago, Zhao has produced a nerveless display to move within touching distance of becoming Asia's first world snooker champion. Zhao would be one of the tournament's most unexpected winners. He is playing as an amateur as he continues his comeback after a 20-month ban for involvement in a 2023 betting scandal. Zhao, who won the 2021 UK Championship, accepted charges of being a party to another player fixing two matches and betting on matches himself. The controversy led to 10 Chinese players being punished, with life bans for Liang Wenbo and Li Hang. Zhao's enforced amateur status meant he had to battle through four qualifying rounds just to reach the World Championship main draw at the Crucible, which is walking distance from his Sheffield home.",

      • "content": "WASHINGTON: The Trump administration will offer a US$1,000 stipend and travel assistance to migrants who elect to voluntarily \"self-deport\" from the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Monday (May 5). The stipend and potential airfare for migrants who voluntarily depart would cost less than an actual deportation, the agency said. The average cost of arresting, detaining and deporting someone without legal status is currently about US$17,000, according to DHS. President Donald Trump, a Republican, took office in January pledging to deport millions of people but so far has trailed deportations under his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden. Biden's administration faced high levels of illegal immigration and quickly returned many caught crossing the border. The Trump administration has deported 152,000 people since Jan 20, according to DHS, lower than the 195,000 deported from February to April last year under Biden. Trump's administration has tried to encourage migrants to leave voluntarily by threatening steep fines, trying to strip away legal status and deporting migrants to notorious prisons in Guantanamo Bay and El Salvador . \"If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,\" Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. In March, the administration launched a rebranded app called CBP Home to facilitate self-deportation. The app, previously called CBP One, was used by the Biden administration to allow migrants to enter the US legally. Trump previewed the stipend plan in April, saying the US would consider allowing migrants to return. \"If they're good, if we want them back in, we're going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can,\" he said. In the announcement on Monday, DHS said people who choose to leave \"may help preserve\" the ability to return legally, but did not cite any specific pathway or program.",

      • "content": "Apple is planning a four-tranche bond offering on Monday, its first in two years, using proceeds to repurchase stock and repay outstanding debt, among other purposes, the company said in an SEC filing. The offering size was not stated but CreditSights analysts expect it to raise nearly $5 billion to $6 billion, noting that Apple has $8 billion in debt maturing from May through November. Eight other issuers in the investment-grade primary market are also expected to kick off an unusually active week with estimated total of nearly $35 billion of new debt offerings. These include notes from Comcast, DTE Electric Co and General Motors. New bond supply is rising as credit spreads, or the premium companies pay over Treasuries, have rebounded in the weeks since U.S. President Donald Trump first announced harsh tariffs and then provided temporary relief. Many issuers had planned offerings sooner but were thrown off by the uncertainty of Trump's policies. They are rushing to market before the Federal Reserve meets on Wednesday to avoid the typical volatility that immediately follows the Fed chair's comments after such monthly policymaking meetings. Demand is expected to remain strong as uncertainty pushed investors to look for safety in higher-rated bonds, analysts said. The issuance rush follows six consecutive weeks of outflows from investment-grade funds, the longest streak since November 2022, noted Dan Krieter, director of fixed income strategy at BMO Capital Markets. \"It's a pretty attractive space to lock in these all-in yields,\" said Natalie Trevithick, head of investment grade credit strategy at Los Angeles-based asset manager Payden & Rygel. The average investment-grade bond spread was at 106 basis points on Friday, the latest data shows, or three basis points lower than levels touched the day before. \"The issuance is a lot of high quality names today, (and) a lot of it is just regularly planned issuance. There are probably a couple deals that got pushed back from April,\" Trevithick noted. Payden & Rygel expects $12 billion to $13 billion of supply on Monday, with roughly $58 billion of investor demand, she added.",

      • "content": "Last month, Honor introduced the Honor 400 Lite, and now it is gearing up for the launch of two new phones in the Honor 400 lineup. The China-based smartphone manufacturer has already begun teasing the launch event. An official poster released by Honor gives us a glimpse of the upcoming device’s camera module, confirming that the lineup will feature a triple-camera setup. The poster reads “Next-Gen AI Imaging,” hinting at a strong focus on AI-driven photography capabilities. Additionally, the poster includes the “Coming Soon” text, suggesting that the launch may take place in the coming weeks. Thanks to leaks, we have a decent amount of information about both rumored devices, the Honor 400 and Honor 400 Pro. The Honor 400 is expected to sport a 6.55-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. The device might be offered in two configurations: one with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and another with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. The Honor 400 is expected to come with a 200MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. It might also feature a 50MP front camera for selfies. The phone is likely to pack a 5,300mAh battery with 66W fast charging support. On the other hand, the more premium Honor 400 Pro is tipped to have a slightly larger 6.7-inch curved AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. This model is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with 12GB of RAM. The device is rumoured to feature a triple-camera setup, including a 200MP main camera, a 50MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The front-facing camera is expected to be 50MP, similar to the standard Honor 400 model. Just like the Honor 400, the Honor 400 Pro is expected to pack a 5,300mAh battery, but with faster 100W charging. READ MORE: Honor 400 Lite; Check expected design, specs, price and more here",

      • "content": "MILAN : Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni has called on his team to pull out all the stops in their bid to contain Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in the Champions League semi-final second leg at San Siro on Tuesday. The prodigious 17-year-old Yamal wowed the crowd at Montjuic with a sublime goal and a bold performance, helping Barcelona twice fight back to secure a gripping 3-3 draw in the first leg. Bastoni, the 25-year-old centre back, who faced Yamal during last year's European Championship where Spain beat Italy 1-0, expressed admiration for the teenager's rapid progression. \"I had already faced him with Spain and he was not yet at this level,\" Bastoni told a press conference on Monday. \"I was impressed by the level he reached, for his age and ability to create incredible things on the pitch, I think he is among the best in the world right now. \"We'll have to double, maybe triple (mark) him like we did at times in the first leg, but without exaggerating, otherwise we would create too many spaces. Barcelona is not just Yamal.\" The electrifying first leg, filled with early drama, late chaos and Yamal's history-making feats, has set the stage for what Bastoni likened to \"game seven of the NBA finals\". \"It's 50-50, all open, and I think it will be a similar game from the first-leg so I'm glad that we will play in front of our fans,\" Bastoni said. \"I can only be proud of how far we have come. We are two games away from winning the Champions League, it is our goal, we really want to make a good impression, to make the people who follow us happy. \"We are sure that our fans will give us a big hand at the San Siro, we live for moments like this.\" PAVARD, MARTINEZ DOUBTFUL Inter manager Simone Inzaghi agreed with Bastoni, stating that their defensive strategy would primarily focus on neutralising Yamal. \"(Defending Yamal) is very difficult, we'll have to try not to let him get the ball, but that's impossible in modern football,\" Inzaghi said. \"He'll be closely marked, he'll be double-marked, and we'll try to be careful. However, as I said in the first leg, having seen him live, he's a huge talent: at his age, he's really dangerous. \"In difficult moments, they hand him the ball, and I was impressed by his quick thinking. When he receives the ball, he already knows what to do next.\" Inzaghi revealed that the availability of injured defender Benjamin Pavard and captain Lautaro Martinez remained uncertain. \"We will decide on Lautaro (Martinez) and Pavard together with the medical staff and the players, they will have to tell me how they feel,\" Inzaghi said. \"On Sunday, Pavard participated in the first part of training and felt okay. Lautaro hasn't trained since Barcelona, so we'll see today how it goes.\"",

      • "content": "Relationships in the K-pop industry are tricky to navigate because fans can be overwhelmingly hateful and downright abusive to anyone they feel threatens their bond with the artist. So, if an idol is linked with a vaguely romantic interest they may receive a barrage of hate mail comments on their appearance and threats to their life. Well, SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi and K-pop idol Rania have now fallen prey to this online hate. Just a decade ago, it was common practice for K-pop agencies to ban new stars from dating or having a personal mobile phone. Well, even today admissions of romantic relationships are often considered scandalous to fans. The driving factor behind these regulations is that industry managers want fans to believe they could have a relationship with the stars. K-pop idol Rania discussed this aspect of the K-pop industry during her appearance on This Is Really the Final, where she appeared alongside EXID’s Hyelin, and Ex-F-ve Dolls‘ Seo Eunkyo. She spilled the beans on her dating secrets as to how she sneakily dated using emails despite not enjoying the luxury of owning a cell phone. Well, matters turned worse when fans began speculating that Rania hinted she dated Hoshi while spilling the beans about her secret dating life. It is reported that her name was linked with the SEVENTEEN member in 2016, only a year after Hoshi’s debut. Just like every idol, even Hoshi didn’t own a cell phone as a rookie idol. Well, enraged fans are now defending the K-pop idol, asking sasaengs to spread baseless rumours about it. A fan on X pointed, “But she didn't even mention names? Plus it was just a rumor.” Another added, “What the hell is this.....pls let him stay at peace let him take care of himself. He's going to join the military soon so please let him rest people.” One more wrote, “She didn't even name him and it's a rumor. In 2016 she was not a rookie anymore. She debut in 2009 lol why would she didn't have a cell phone after 7 years? Are these fans stupid?” Meanwhile, another joined the bandwagon writing, “I do not think it's Hoshi though.” There have been signs of change in recent years with agencies shifting away from controversial contract terms and allowing stars more privacy and ability to live their lives. What do you think?",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Bill Gates’ non-profit organisation, the Gates Foundation, will be opening an office in Singapore. Speaking at the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2025 in Singapore on Monday (May 5), the co-founder of Microsoft said that the office will “access the science to partner with the philanthropic community” and “the research being done” in the country. The foundation’s presence in Singapore will be established with the support of the Economic Development Board (EDB). “Singapore’s strategic location and research ecosystem makes it a strong platform for advancing healthcare, fintech and (artificial intelligence) innovations that can deliver meaningful impact across the region and the world,” EDB managing director Jermaine Loy said in a statement. Founded in 2000 by Gates and his then wife Melinda French Gates, the foundation is a philanthropic organisation that aims to improve global health, access to education and inclusive economic growth. The establishment of a Singapore presence reflects the foundation’s broader commitment to working alongside countries and partners to help more people live healthy and productive lives and accelerate progress toward achieving sustainable development goals, it said in a media release on Monday. In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who met Mr Gates on Monday, said: “Singapore looks forward to working closely with the Gates Foundation to advance innovation and improve lives - here in Asia and around the world.” Mr Wong said that he “had a wide-ranging conversation\" with Mr Gates \"on the challenges ahead, from clean energy to vaccine development\". Mr Gates also had a meeting with Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, with Mr Lee sharing that they \"exchanged views on many topics, from eradicating polio and measles to developing new technologies for nuclear power\", and discussed how the Gates Foundation can collaborate more with entities in Singapore, like the Temasek Trust and the country's universities. “We welcome the Gates Foundation and others to continue to bring their businesses and interests here to Singapore and invest in our ecosystem and deepen our ties with the region,” he said in his own Facebook post. At the summit on Monday, Philanthropy Asia Alliance CEO Shaun Seow spoke about the value of collaboration between Asian and global philanthropists. “We really want to make sure ... that global philanthropists understand what's happening in Asia,” he said. “And Asian philanthropists, through interactions with the global philanthropists, will then have a better idea (of) how philanthropy can advance too. So, hoping that the two will actually come together and actually make a real difference to Asia.”",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Monday (May 5) recalled a blood glucose supplement after it was found to contain undisclosed prescription-only antidiabetic medicines. In a press release, HSA warned the public not to consume “CuraLin advanced glucose support”, as the product, which was labelled to contain traditional herbs, was tested by the authority during routine checks to contain glibenclamide and metformin. Glibenclamide and metformin are prescription-only medicines used to treat diabetes mellitus and should only be taken under medical supervision. HSA has directed LYC Nutrihealth, which imported the product in two batches, to stop all sales and recall both batches. It added that the supplement was brought in from the United States and supplied locally with the following batch numbers: Batch 2023-19650 and Batch 2023-19651, both of which expire in September 2026. The recall is ongoing. HSA said that the inappropriate use of glibenclamide or metformin without medical supervision may cause low blood glucose levels, which can lead to seizures and coma. \"Other adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cholestatic jaundice, a condition where bile flow is blocked or slowed down.\" Metformin can also cause lactic acidosis - a dangerous build-up of acid in blood - that can be life-threatening, HSA added. Diabetic patients who take the supplement together with their prescribed antidiabetic medicines are also at risk of overdose due to the additive effects of these medicines, said the authority. CuraLin advanced glucose support was marketed to \"help support healthy blood glucose levels\", \"promote energy levels\", and \"help support carbohydrate and fat metabolism\". It was sold by various sellers and on local e-commerce platforms, including Shopee and Lazada. \"HSA has worked with the local e-commerce platform administrators to ensure that listings of the affected product were removed,\" it said, adding that all sellers and suppliers must stop selling the product immediately. Consumers are advised to stop consuming the product immediately. Those who feel unwell after taking the product, especially if they have diabetes or have been concurrently taking other prescribed antidiabetic medicines, should consult their doctor. \"There may be other batches or variants of 'CuraLin advanced glucose support' being sold in the market. If in doubt, consumers should not buy or consume these products,\" said HSA. For returns of the affected batches of the product, consumers should contact the retailer or seller from whom they bought the product. HSA said it will not hesitate to take stern enforcement actions against anyone who sells and supplies products found to be adulterated with potent ingredients. Sellers and suppliers are liable to prosecution and, if convicted, may be jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to S$10,000 (US$12,900).",

      • "description": "A lawyer for SMRT Trains stressed the company's safety culture and record, but a prosecutor from the Ministry of Manpower argued that there was a \"pattern\" of offending.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: SMRT Trains was ordered to pay a fine of S$240,000 (US$186,000) on Monday (May 5) for workplace safety failures in the case of an employee who died while working at Bishan Depot. Mr Muhammad Afiq Senawi, a 30-year-old technical officer, died of face and chest injuries after a rod shot out of a hydraulic press machine and struck him. He had been working at SMRT for more than two years at the time of his death on Mar 23, 2020. SMRT pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to take necessary measures to ensure the safety and health of its employees, which carries a maximum fine of S$1 million. On the day of the accident, Mr Afiq was operating a hydraulic press machine with another technical officer at a maintenance workshop in Bishan Depot. Mr Afiq put a new part into the machine without first removing an old part. This resulted in the new part being misaligned and pressure accumulating in the machine. The rod, which was not engaged in the machine, ejected, penetrated the metal fencing around the machine and hit Mr Afiq's lower jaw. He was treated on site and then in a hospital, where he died. SMRT admitted that it failed to put in place a pressure gauge after the machine was dismantled for repair, even though this was a safety measure identified in the machine's operating manual. The machine's pressure gauge was recorded as damaged in June 2018 and an engineering maintenance manager ordered it to be dismantled. He later overlooked its reinstallation. It was not necessary for workers to monitor the exact pressure when operating the machine. The Ministry of Manpower's prosecutor Kimberly Boo, said, though, that a gauge would have given the workers an indication of any disproportionate increase in force when the machine was in operation. SMRT also failed to limit the maximum operating pressure of the machine through the use of pressure valves, which would have reduced the workers' exposure to a force way beyond what was needed for the machine's intended use. The maximum pressure of the hydraulic press machine was about 98 tonnes, which exceeded the pressure necessary to perform the task of removing and installing a part to the machine that day, which was about 1.4 tonnes and 3.3 tonnes respectively. The train operator further failed to ensure that the pieces in the machine were engaged and interlocked to prevent displacement of any single one. The company had earlier identified the hazard of a part slipping or shooting out of the machine in its risk assessment of May 2018. During sentencing arguments, SMRT's defence counsel said the accident was not the result of a flagrant disregard for safety, but represented an \"extreme scenario\" for which the possible safeguards were not in place. She stressed SMRT's safety culture, track record of operating the hydraulic press machine for more than 20 years without incident, and that the company had remained free of work-accidents for the past five years. She also said that SMRT's workplace injury rate was lower than the average in Singapore's transport and logistics industry, with last year's figure at 648 cases for every 100,000 workers yearly since 2020. However, Ms Boo pointed to five of SMRT's previous workplace safety convictions for accidents between 2010 and 2020, which formed what she called a \"pattern\" of offending. These included a S$230,000 fine for a December 2018 accident that resulted in a worker's leg being amputated, as well as a S$400,000 fine after two workers died after being hit by a train in March 2016. Ms Boo said this gave rise to an \"irresistible inference\" that previous calls for robust safety practices and culture in the workplace were not heeded and she urged the court to send a strong signal. Senior District Judge Ong Hian Sun said that he took SMRT's prior related convictions into consideration in imposing the fine and that it was necessary for the company and its employees to proactively address safety risks.",

      • "content": "BRUSSELS/LONDON: The United States is seeking to weaken a global deal aimed at helping developing countries struggling with the impacts of climate change and other issues, an internal United Nations document seen by Reuters showed. The Trump administration opposes draft reforms of the world's financial system intended to help developing countries, including around taxation, credit ratings and fossil fuel subsidies. It also wants mentions of \"climate\", \"gender equality\" and \"sustainability\" stripped out. The previously unreported document sheds light on how the Trump administration is seeking to imprint an \"America First\" agenda, including opposition to efforts to slow climate change and promote diversity, on the institutions at the heart of fixing global systemic crises. The once-a-decade, 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Seville, Spain, in June aims to influence the strategic direction of the world's development finance institutions. Countries agreed at FFD3, for example, to broaden tax cooperation efforts so that developing countries could help set the rules and as of last May more than 140 countries were involved. \"This conference is about bringing the world's leaders together and setting the underlying rules and priorities for financing development goals over the next decade,\" Tom Mitchell, executive director of the International Institute for Environment and Development, told Reuters. Compiled by the permanent representatives to the UN of Mexico, Nepal, Norway, and Zambia, with help from the UN secretariat, the Apr 11 negotiating draft is annotated with the positions of the 193 nations involved in the discussions. With ongoing changes at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in the fight against climate change already facing pushback from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the document showed it was seeking to water down further reform efforts. Among specific points in the text that refer to the systemic reform, the document shows the US wants to remove a reference to a \"package of reforms\" for sustainable development. It wants to replace a line promising to \"commit to reform the international financial architecture\" with a pledge to \"recognise the need to enhance its resilience and effectiveness in responding to present and future challenges and crises\". Such changes in language signal the degree of shared commitment that can then be used as support for action or inaction in future talks. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has acknowledged the need to overcome multiple challenges ahead of the conference, but urged \"all countries to be at the table in Sevilla focused on solutions,\" spokesperson Florencia Soto Niño said in an email to Reuters. The White House and Treasury Department did not respond to requests for comment. The State Department declined to comment. While the US' position on development has become tougher under Trump, the negotiating document shows it remains supportive of efforts that include developing countries working more closely with the private sector, and fostering innovation and financial literacy. CLIMATE CHANGE A key goal of the global reforms is to better help poorer nations cope with weather disasters, which are worsening due to climate change, and to boost economic development using low-carbon energy rather than traditional fossil fuels. President Donald Trump has quit the UN Paris climate agreement, slashed US foreign development aid by more than 80 per cent as part of a government overhaul led by billionaire Elon Musk and embarked on a trade war that is hurting many poorer nations. Among areas of the FFD4 document that the US objects to is a call for countries to explore \"global solidarity levies\" that could include taxes on highly polluting activities or on the super-rich to finance sustainable development. If included, the levies could be taken up in UN negotiations on taxes this year and would bolster a task force led by France, Kenya and Barbados that aims to develop such taxes among smaller groups of countries. Other countries to object include Russia, Saudi Arabia and China. The US is also seeking to delete a paragraph calling for companies to pay tax to the countries where economic activity occurs; a paragraph on helping developing countries bolster tax transparency; and another on phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, the document shows. Many of the world's poorest countries struggle with high debt and the costs of rebuilding after disastrous storms, but the FFD4 document shows the US wants to strike a paragraph on reforming the credit-rating system. That includes a push for raters to take a more forgiving approach to poorer nations that voluntarily restructure their debt to invest in green projects, it showed. The US also opposes a commitment to ensure countries receive \"adequate and uninterrupted funding on appropriate terms of social protection and other essential social spending during shocks and crises\", the document shows. While the US has considerable influence as the biggest shareholder in both the World Bank, which provides loans and grants to developing countries, and the IMF, and is currently reviewing its role in both, the draft deal is likely to change further as countries continue negotiations in May, before reaching consensus on a final document in mid-June. The US position puts pressure on other countries to accept a weaker deal, since the talks aim to adopt a deal by consensus.",

      • "description": "Apple is reportedly restructuring its iPhone launch strategy into two separate events. As part of this shift, the iPhone 18 launch is expected to be delayed until 2027, while the much-anticipated foldable iPhone could make its debut as early as 2026",
      • "content": "Starting next year, the regular iPhone model may not be available in September; instead, it is hinted to arrive in Spring 2027. This change is part of Apple’s new strategy, which aims to accommodate the rumoured foldable iPhone at its flagship event alongside the Pro models. This marks a significant shift, as Apple has consistently launched its flagship series every fall without fail. According to a report from The Information , the iPhone 18 will ship in 2027 alongside the follow-up to the iPhone 16e . Earlier this year, in February, the Cupertino-based giant introduced its midrange offering, the iPhone 16e, which is likely a replacement for the iPhone SE lineup. Credit - ZoneofTech (YouTube) In 2026, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Additionally, the highly anticipated foldable iPhone may make its debut at the same event. The report further states that Apple is planning this staggered launch to streamline its expanded lineup of six iPhones, while also managing workforce requirements for manufacturing. READ MORE: Apple iPad Air M3 Review: The Smallest Of Upgrades As for the foldable model, it is rumoured to feature a book-like foldable design, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold. Leaks suggest the device will measure 5.5 inches when closed and 7.8 inches when fully opened – comparable to the iPad Mini, which has a 7.9-inch display. Given Apple’s focus on sleek designs, the foldable iPhone is expected to be quite thin, utilising the same technology as the rumored slim iPhone 17 Air. If leaks hold true, the device will be less than 5.1mm thick when open and around 9mm to 9.5mm when closed. Popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also suggested that Apple may opt for Touch ID instead of Face ID for this model. While these leaks are exciting enough, it's still too early to confirm any specifics. We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more credible information emerges. • "content": "JOHANNESBURG :MTN South Africa said it will offer 1.2 million of its prepaid customers 4G smartphones for as little as 99 rand ($5.42) to support digital adoption for low-income households, as the country gears up to switch off 2G and 3G technologies. The initiative will be executed in three phases, starting this month until the end of 2026. In phase one, 5,000 \"carefully selected\" customers, based on usage profiles, spending patterns, and tenure, will be offered 4G smartphones, mainly in Gauteng province, MTN said in a statement on Monday. In phase two, more than 130,000 customers nationally will be offered the devices and then in the third phase, more than 1.1 million MTN customers across the country will benefit. The initiative comes as South Africa plans a total shutdown of 2G and 3G networks by December 31, 2027, to free up radio waves for faster 4G LTE and 5G networks. Critics of the plan had argued that phasing 2G and 3G networks risked exacerbating the digital divide as many low-income consumers, particularly those in remote areas, may not be able to afford smartphones designed for faster networks. This in turn would mean a drop in customer numbers for mobile operators and lower revenue. \"At MTN, we are committed to going the extra mile to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital era. As the country transitions to technologies like 4G and 5G, it is vital that we take proactive steps to connect as many South Africans as possible,\" said MTN South Africa CEO Charles Molapisi. MTN, with 39.8 million customers in South Africa, of which 29.9 million are prepaid, said it will be offering a variety of smartphones throughout the initiative. For the first phase, it will distribute the Itel 5.5-inch smartphone, which usually retails for 740 rand. For the other brands, they range between 800 rand and 1,100 rand per device. MTN South Africa will incur operational costs of between 150 rand and 190 rand per device through courier costs, call centre, marketing and incentives, it said. ($1 = 18.2765 rand)",

      • "content": "Thunderbolts* is set in the timeline, where the Avengers saved the universe from the wrath of Thanos. But in the process, we lose many superheroes including Iron Man, Black Widow, who tragically passes away, and Captain America, who happily retires from his position. This means the world is left vulnerable, and any alien attack could wipe out humanity entirely. At such perilous times, Marvel has put together a team of anti-heroes, who’re frequently hired for contract killings, shadow ops, robbing government labs, and other bad things. They’re the “New Avengers.” Will they be able to defend the universe, only time can tell. For now, here we have answered some of the major hot questions about Thunderbolts* An emergency alarm goes off in the end-credit scene which alerts the “New Avengers” of an extradimensional object approaching Earth-616’s orbit, which is later revealed to be the spaceship of ‘Fantastic Four.’ When asked about the post-credit scene, director Jake Schreier told Entertainment Weekly, “You know as much as I know about that. I mean, I was there, but I didn't direct that scene. That comes from the set of a movie (Avengers: Doomsday) that is officially beginning production on Monday.\" Notably, every character featured in the scene were seen in brand new superhero suits, when asked if their costume upgrade was for Avengers: Doomsday, the director confirmed, “I don't know if I'm going to get shot by a sniper. That is a scene from [Doomsday], so in theory [yes]. Now, things can change, as they do in the Marvel world, but as currently constituted, you were watching a small hint of that film.\" Bucky Barnes’ inclination into politics was introduced during his cameo in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ where he was running for Congress. In Thunderbolts*, the mass-murdering former Hydra operative is shown to have become a Congressman in Brooklyn despite his murderous history as the Winter Soldier. But after joining the Thunderbolts* aka the “New Avengers” will Bucky remain a Congressman? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sebastian Stan, the actor who plays Bucky revealed, “Yeah, it's almost like crossing it out, right? He's still trying to find his way of how he can contribute in a way that he hasn't before. Ultimately, he realizes, 'No, I am who I am, and I do things how I do them, and I should just do that.'\" Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier doubled down on Stan’s statement explaining Bucky’s political future is done for. \"I think he's found a new place that makes much more sense for him,” said the filmmaker. After the death of her sister Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), Yelena is consumed by emptiness and is working for the CIA, mindlessly clocking in and clocking out, completing her missions which she calls “the cleaning business” without purpose. In the opening scene, Yelena launches an attack in a laboratory, to wipe out evidence against CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who is facing an impeachment inquiry. We learn that Valentina was funding ‘Project Sentry,’ an inhuman experiment to create a superperson, more powerful than a thousand suns, an invincible Earth’s mightiest hero, who’ll help her be unimpeachable. She is under the impression that her experiment was a big failure, and she strategically orders four of her rogue operatives to eliminate one another, to get rid of all the evidence. The operatives including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), are locked in a classified facility; they’re hell-bent on killing each other. Sadly, Taskmaster was shot in the head and murdered in cold blood before the rest of them realized Valentina’s twisted plot. Director Jake Schreier in an interview with Entertainment Weekly revealed that Taskmaster was killed quite early on in the Thunderbolts*, to give the audience an impression that anybody in this dysfunctional team could die any moment. \"The decision to do it when we did it, we went through a lot of different versions of that, and we thought very carefully about it. And it felt like, while it would've been very nice — and Olga is a wonderful actress — to have her on the team for longer, that death would've kind of reverberated a lot harder and made it harder to find our tonal balance if it had happened later in the film,” explained Schreier. He continued, \"And it would've occupied such a kind of more emotional space that would've stepped on what we really need to be building. And we have so little narrative real estate to do it, which is the connection between Yelena and Bob (Lewis Pullman), and the movie is really going to hinge on that. And so in order to keep our tone and to build that team together, it actually felt best, even if it feels a little cold-blooded, to have that happen early.\" The director highlighted Taskmaster’s death as a “reminder” for the audience that despite being skillful and well-trained, none of the characters in Thunderbolts* are unkillable.",

      • "description": "A director who made a business out of incorporating companies while not exercising oversight of them was sentenced to jail after the prosecution appealed against an earlier fine.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The High Court has set out a stiffer sentencing framework for \"silent\" directors who are paid not to exercise oversight over the companies they incorporate in Singapore. Imprisonment will now be the presumptive sentence for such offences, and the onus will be on the director to explain why this should not be the case. The new sentencing framework was set out by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, Justice Tay Yong Kwang and Justice Vincent Hoong in a written judgment dated Apr 24. The judges were ruling on the prosecution's appeal against an S$8,500 (US$6,600) fine given to convicted company director Zheng Jia . They allowed the appeal and imposed a heavier sentence of 10 months' jail instead of the fine. Zheng was a \"silent\" director who had incorporated or been registered as the director of 384 companies, according to the judgment. In 2019, he set up a business in Shenzhen for Chinese clients who wanted to incorporate companies in Singapore, pricing his services between S$1,000 and S$1,400 annually. Zheng would register himself as the locally resident director of the companies and open bank accounts in their names. He was ignorant of the companies' affairs and exercised no control over them. The business was so successful that he paid another person, Er Beng Hwa , to help him with the volume of work. Er acted as a nominee director for 186 companies and also helped to open bank accounts for them. In 2020, scam proceeds from four foreign victims, totalling more than US$2.4 million, were routed through the bank accounts of two companies incorporated by Zheng and Er. Last year, Zheng pleaded guilty and was fined for failing to exercise reasonable diligence in the discharge of his duties as a director and abetting Er to do the same. He was also banned from acting as a director or partaking in the management of any company for five years. Explaining their decision, the High Court judges noted that the duty to exercise reasonable diligence as a director is broad and can be breached in \"any number of ways\". They observed that in Zheng's case, \"the offender is a professional chartered accountant whose business model was predicated on him being registered as a locally resident nominee director of numerous companies incorporated for foreign clients, but who would then exercise no control or supervision over the affairs of those companies whatsoever\". \"There is simply no equivalence at all between such a director, and another who is involved in the affairs of a company or a group, but who makes a negligent error in the discharge of his duties,\" they said. In fact, it was the \"concerted dereliction of his core duty\" as a director that enabled Zheng's \"high volume, low effort enterprise and fuelled its growth\", said the judges. Zheng had \"every intention to neglect\" his duty from the outset, and this was precisely what made his services \"attractive\" to the clients whose criminal activities he enabled, they added. In this context, the judges disagreed with the existing sentencing approach, which is that preserving Singapore's commercial environment should weigh against imposing imprisonment except where a director has acted \"intentionally, knowingly or recklessly\". \"This is much too broad a statement and it overlooks the gross differences between one who offers a particular form of directorship that entails looking away from the affairs of the company, and one who is committed to the best interests of the company but makes a mistake in the course of carrying out his duties. \"Directors who assume their offices with every intention of abdicating their duty ... present serious risks to their companies specifically and Singapore's corporate and financial ecosystem generally and they are acting knowingly, if not intentionally,\" the judges said. They set out a non-exhaustive list of factors the court may consider in sentencing offences under Section 157(1) of the Companies Act: They then set out three revised bands as sentencing guidelines, based on the number of factors present: This would give an indicative sentence for the court to adjust based on offender-specific factors, such as remorse and cooperation with authorities, the judges said.",
