      • "description": "Experts tell CNA why it can be difficult to meet the formal criteria to be assessed as dyslexic.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: After her elder son was diagnosed with dyslexia, Ms Elmy Sulaiha Nasre thought her daughter, who was displaying similar symptoms, also had the learning disorder. Instead, she found out that Nur Evren Elveera, at eight years old, had another problem which could have hindered her learning ability from an even younger age. At four to five years old, Evren's speech had been unclear. She had difficulties with alphabets, including flipping them around in her writing, her mother told CNA. The 37-year-old therapy assistant hired a private tutor for Evren and sent her to be formally assessed by the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) - the main organisation here providing support for those with learning challenges. A little over a year ago, the DAS opened its services to students without a formal diagnosis of a learning difference. As of April, this group of students now makes up around 5 to 6 per cent of DAS’ total enrolment, or 158 out of 3,000 students aged six to 16 across all of its programmes. The association said it was heartened by the steady flow of students without a diagnosis but still applying for intervention. It expects these numbers to eventually make up 30 per cent of total enrolment. Speaking to CNA, two representatives said DAS acknowledged the \"good number\" of students who do not meet the diagnostic criteria for dyslexia but who have similar learning challenges. \"This group is presently underserved and the DAS approach to education will also benefit these students ... These students who struggle to learn should be supported regardless of their diagnosis,\" said Ms Serena Tan Abdullah and Ms Pearllyn Kang. Ms Abdullah is lead educational therapist and deputy director of DAS' english language and literacy division, while Ms Kang is assistant director of specific learning differences assessment services. WHY SOME FALL SHORT OF A DIAGNOSIS Dyslexia is a lifelong learning difficulty which affects skills involving accurate and fluent reading and spelling. It can be attributed predominantly to a deficit in phonological awareness, or the ability to work with speech sounds in languages. Principal educational psychologist at Promises Healthcare Tan Su-Lynn said dyslexia is typically identified through a combination of screenings, observations and formal assessments. Possible signs - especially in children - include difficulties in sounding out words; slow, laboured reading; struggles with spelling; reversed letters; avoidance in reading aloud; and taking longer for written assignments, she added. In 2021, the Education Ministry (MOE) said in a parliamentary reply that all students are screened in Primary One so that those with weak language and literacy skills receive early intervention. If their difficulties persist, then they receive further screening for dyslexia identification. Data from 2016 to 2019 showed that about 3.5 per cent of Primary 3 students were reported as having dyslexia. In Secondary 1, about an additional 1 per cent of the cohort were reported with dyslexia. \"The proportion of students with dyslexia in Singapore is within the international prevalence of between 3 per cent and 10 per cent,\" said MOE then. At DAS, dyslexia is diagnosed through a psycho-educational assessment of a student’s strengths and weaknesses. It also evaluates the common characteristics underlying dyslexia, such as phonological processing, reading and spelling skills. The two DAS representatives stressed the importance of early and timely intervention for a child. However, attempting to detect the condition sooner comes with its own challenges. Literacy skill acquisition can vary from young child to child. Some might have language difficulties simply due to poor instruction or lack of exposure, Ms Abdullah and Ms Kang said. Yet if not assessed early on, children could develop strategies that mask the condition. \"Children are adaptable and resilient, and when they continue to struggle, they develop coping strategies to compensate for their difficulties,\" said Psych Connect's senior ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and executive functioning coach Zainab Shaukat. Promises Healthcare's Ms Tan said highly intelligent children, or those with strong memory skills, may memorise words or make guesses based on context, rendering their struggles less visible in the early years of schooling. \"As a result, their challenges might only surface much later, when academic demands increase such as when they are introduced to more complex tasks like comprehension or composition writing,\" she said, adding that such children may fall through the cracks. Compounding the issue is how dyslexia co-exists or overlaps with other conditions like ADHD or speech and language impairment, as all the experts CNA spoke to noted. \"There may be times when adults working with these children miss signs and attribute the literacy difficulties to other concerns,\" said DAS' Ms Abdullah and Ms Kang. Dr Zainab said: \"This is why a comprehensive assessment, done by an experienced professional ... is monumental in the accurate diagnosis.\" In Evren's case, her assessors found that her right ear's impaired hearing from birth was the main problem hindering her ability to absorb speech and articulate, said her mother Ms Elmy. Because Evren only got a hearing aid at around four years old, she ended up missing out on a window period for learning. SUPPORT SYSTEM Ms Tan, the psychologist, pointed to a network of special educational needs officers, teachers and learning support coordinators working together to help those who don't meet the criteria. \"Schools are increasingly adopting a needs-based approach, where support is provided based on the student’s profile and not solely on labels,\" she said. She noted how tech tools - spanning the likes of text-to-speech as well as speech-to-text software, audiobooks and reading apps with dyslexia-friendly fonts - can make reading and writing more accessible to those with learning difficulties. Dr Zainab said one could still receive educational therapy, even without a diagnosis. Teaching staff in schools should be trained to identify a struggling child and to provide them with the right support, she said. In October last year, MOE said in a parliamentary reply that the number of special educational needs officers in mainstream schools increased from around 450 in 2017 to about 680 as of July 2024. All teachers have also been trained to have at least a basic understanding of special educational needs and capabilities, the ministry added. Additionally, five to ten teachers in every mainstream school have attended a 130-hour course upon which they are designated as Teachers Trained in Special Needs. These educators have \"deeper expertise and can share effective pedagogical practices with other teachers to support students with more complex needs\", said MOE. As for Evren, since she was not formally diagnosed with dyslexia, she was not offered a targeted group class in her school, unlike her 10-year-old elder brother. Instead, her teachers sat her in front of the classroom in an attempt to help her absorb lessons better. They also check in on her to see if she's able to follow lessons. Outside of school, Evren has also been enrolled into DAS' IReaCH programme, which aims to help with reading, comprehension and writing. The association, on its part, is shoring up efforts to support students with learning difficulties. In February, it opened its second largest learning centre at Toa Payoh, bringing the total number of centres to 12. DAS also received a S$300,000 donation at the same time, to be given out as bursaries to help students from low-income families - who have either been diagnosed with dyslexia or have other learning difficulties. With all the additional support, Evren is now academically nearly on par with her peers. She no longer writes letters in reverse, her relieved mother said. Ms Elmy is glad that her daughter is benefitting from DAS' expanded scope, and now coping well despite a delayed start. \"I would have acted faster if I knew the lapses she has in her studies,\" said Ms Elmy. \"It's more on our side to make the first move.\"",

      • "description": "America imports more films and TV shows than it exports, yet the US-based entertainment industry has never been so dominant globally, says this academic.",
      • "content": "LONDON: With its tariffs policies, the administration of US President Donald Trump aims to correct the country’s persistent goods trade deficit. The president has argued that the US has been “looted, pillaged, raped and plundered” by other countries. Trump feels it is now America’s “turn to prosper” – and he has the film and TV industries in his sights with threats of 100 per cent tariffs on foreign films. Economists cite multiple reasons why tariffs are bad for economies, from stunting growth to adding inflationary pressure. But there is a more fundamental problem, which is notable in the case of the film and TV industries. While trade data reflects a country’s overall performance, it says nothing about the nature and ownership of the traded goods. Indeed, the cross-border activities and foreign investments of US-based multinationals widen the US trade deficit. Global trade flows in film and TV are a good example. US TRADE DEFICIT IN FILMS AND TV In terms of the origin of a movie, it is determined by factors including the nationality of those in key creative roles, financing, filming location and the culture reflected in the theme and story. The US has long been the world’s largest exporter of films and TV, dominating global media flows for much of the 20th century. In the 1970s, the country exported seven times as much film and TV programming as that of its nearest competitor (the UK). Three decades later, the US was still exporting 4.5 times the amount of content it imported – US$12.6 billion versus US$2.8 billion. US exports have increased, reaching US$24.7 billion in 2023, and Hollywood remains the world’s largest movie exporter. However, the US balance of trade in the sector has shifted dramatically. While US exports grew by 95.4 per cent between 2006 and 2023, US imports increased by 898 per cent. The trade in film and TV programming achieved balance in 2019, and my research shows that since then, the US has imported more films and TV shows than it exported. The deficit was narrowing in 2023 but imports remained 12.1 per cent higher than exports. This deficit deserves an explanation. Are Asian and European producers suddenly flooding the US with films and TV shows? Has the American public developed an insatiable appetite for Nordic noir or K-drama? The reality is that US-based media conglomerates like Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery have changed strategy. They have moved away from their previous focus on exports to direct-to-consumer international distribution. What does this mean? Well, instead of licensing content to foreign broadcasters and cinemas (which they still do, but to a lesser extent), they retail their content internationally, using their own global streaming services. THE US ENTERTAINMENT PARADOX Maintaining these large content libraries explains the shift of the US trade balance. US-based streamers export less because they now retain more of their content for exclusive distribution on their own streaming platforms. And they import more because they acquire foreign content in greater quantities than ever before. For example, Stranger Things is produced by Netflix in the US. As such, it does not show up in export figures. Squid Game, on the other hand, is a Korean export and shows up in US import data. Moreover, Walt Disney has decided to retain the exclusive rights to its franchises, forgoing licensing sales. In 2020, the company licensed 59 per cent of its scripted series to third parties, 18 per cent in 2021, and only 2 per cent in 2022. All the US streaming giants license and commission foreign content. Netflix in particular has spent more on international content than US programming since 2024 (US$7.9 billion versus US$7.5 billion). Hence the creation of a paradox: US trade data in audiovisual services reveals a trade deficit, yet the US-based entertainment industry has never been so dominant globally. There are similar patterns in industries in which US-based multinationals are located at the apex of transnational supply chains. The jeans that Levi Strauss imports from Bangladesh, the trainers that Nike imports from Vietnam, and the car components Ford imports from Brazil all show up in US trade statistics. But these goods are, essentially, American-owned assets. About 70 per cent of trade involves global value chains (GVC), as raw materials and components cross borders multiple times before being assembled into a final product. In today’s global economy, the complexity of most products requires companies to cooperate along transnational production networks. As businesses and countries specialise in specific tasks, GVCs are the most efficient way of producing goods and services. The streaming industry simply mirrors these wider patterns. HOLLYWOOD TARIFFS ARE MISGUIDED Mindful of the US trade deficit in films and TV programmes, Trump announced the plans for 100 per cent tariffs on all films produced outside the US. However, his attempt to “make Hollywood great again” is misguided. While Hollywood has new rivals to contend with, notably South Korea, it remains the world’s largest film and TV exporter. Following a short period of decline in the late 2010s, US exports have continued to grow. For Trump, the vexing issue is that the US imports more films and TV programmes than its exports. But that is due to US-based platforms’ foreign content hoarding. Adolescence and Squid Game have indeed contributed to extending the gap between US imports and exports, but they are US-owned assets that have earned Netflix hundreds of millions of dollars in subscription fees. (Squid Game’s impact value for Netflix was estimated at US$891 million in 2021.) And American content on US-based streaming giants does not show up in trade data. The whole world is watching Black Mirror and Ransom Canyon, but these series have never been exported. Rather, they are on a global platform (Netflix). US-based media conglomerates have never been so dominant in the global media market. In short, trade data does not tell the whole story. If implemented, these tariffs will certainly have far-reaching consequences for the film and TV industry. But they are unlikely to make anyone more prosperous. • "description": "Before you scramble for the next limited-edition brand plushie, writer Annie Tan advises you to ask yourself: Will you still want it in a year?",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Who would have thought that your local Sheng Siong and FairPrice would become the new battleground for collectible plushies? On Apr 26, Milo launched limited-edition plushies of Milo drinks, kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and gem biscuits in celebration of its 75th anniversary in Singapore. Shoppers were seen crowding around Milo displays and hoarding the chocolate malt drink. Videos circulated online of people “massaging” Milo packets to identify the hidden toy and unboxing their hauls. Scalpers listed the plushie on resale platforms like Carousell for as much as S$200. Milo is not an outlier. Earlier this year, KFC launched sold-out Mofusand plushies . Last week, Pizza Hut started offering a limited-edition cheeseburger melts-shaped plushie you can add to any Cheeseburger Melt order for S$6.90. With more food brands jumping on the collectible plush bandwagon, one question begs to be asked: why are we biting? Or rather, why are we scrambling for plushies shaped like everyday food – Milo, kaya toast, eggs, burger melts – when the actual food items rarely get a square on our social media feed? FAST TOYS BY FAST BRANDS You could say that few things galvanise Singaporeans like the words “free” and “while stocks last”. The zero-price effect and engineered scarcity triggers our FOMO like clockwork – the fear of missing out on a good deal is arguably as Singaporean a trait as a love of good food. Truth be told, this is probably the main reason many of us continue to take our 15th free brand-labelled cooler box, Tupperware or tote bag that usually ends up in the deep abyss of our cupboards and storerooms. But this isn’t just kiasu-ism at work. After all, you wouldn’t expect to see someone’s haul of gift-with-purchase cooler bags and Tupperwares on social media. Rather, at the heart of it, these collectible food plushies ride the popular TikTok and Instagram trend of unboxing videos, as well as the growing “kidult” trend. Bonus points when items come in a blind box format – like the immensely popular Pop Mart collectibles. At first glance, it seems like a brilliant marketing idea. For a fraction of traditional advertising costs, this lands the brand on countless people’s social media feeds, and perhaps even a spot in their living rooms, kitchens or bedrooms. But these strange bedfellows have a deeper impact. When companies primarily known for fast-moving consumer goods and fast food start producing “fast toys” – meaning, they are cheap to produce and easy to dispose of – they turn everyday activities like eating and grocery shopping into a social sport. Like Pokemon GO, we are spurred by social media to collect them all, fuelling mindless consumption for performative rather than productive reasons. BEYOND THE HYPE, WHAT’S THE POINT? Every year, my helper and I put together a care package for her family back in the Philippines. We donate some of our own unused items still in good condition, and reach out to friends and family for their pre-loved items. No matter how many times we do this exercise, I still find myself shocked by the heaps of random stuff we Singaporeans amass. This year, added to the pile was a pristine haul of Hello Kitty plushies launched by McDonald's years ago, still in their original plastic wrapping. Once avidly collected by my uncle’s niece, they have now become cast-offs. Moreover, not all pre-loved items have hand-me-down value. Novelty items like cheeseburger melts and Milo plushies are not likely to be on the Christmas list of most underprivileged children – meaning they are more likely to be eventually incinerated. Such products are designed to be TikTok and Instagram phenomena, and are thus known to have incredibly short trend cycles. In fact, the more hyped up the item is, the faster it’s likely to lose its novelty factor, and consumers move on more quickly. At this point, it is worth noting that many of the brands on this bandwagon – including Pizza Hut, KFC and Milo – have made public declarations of sustainability efforts and pledges. For these brands, what is the legacy of launching a product that will result in thousands of stuffed plushies and their accompanying plastic wrapping soon turning up as trash headed for landfills and incinerators come the next brand anniversary? My family have been Milo drinkers for decades, and we noticed a few years ago that the brand had switched to paper straws to reduce plastic waste. However, these straws can become soggy and mushy if you take too long to finish your drink. To be fair, the quality of these straws has gotten significantly better over the years, but there’s still room for improvement. If the brand could invest further towards creating a sustainable but more durable straw or find a way to keep straws protected without using more plastic wrapping, that would have more lasting benefits to consumers. In contrast, offering stuffed toys with purchases feel like the plushie equivalent of junk food – instant gratification without much lasting value for consumers. ADDING “EMPTY CALORIES” TO OUR LIVES In the post-adulting era, “kidulting” – embracing our inner child – has risen as a counterwave. This includes openly indulging our childhood love for “kiddie” products, such as plushies and toys . But there is a key difference. While our childhood toys and adult collectibles were once cherished and kept for years, today’s social media-fuelled obsessions feel fleeting – more for public performance than personal meaning. Are we buying a memory, or just feeding the machine of consumerism? Some meaningful questions to ask yourself: would you still want this toy in a year? Would you hug a cheeseburger melt, Milo packet or kaya toast to sleep? Even if you manage to get the full collection, would you display it prominently on your living room shelf and admire it on quiet weekend evenings? If you did display these everyday comestibles, would your house look like a space curated for your comfort, or a supermarket aisle decked out with promotional material? Most Singaporeans live in small spaces, so it helps to be selective about our purchases so that we don’t end up having to declutter our home every few months, wasting precious hours, days and weeks of our lives – not to mention money. The fact is that brands churn out these items because of the demand for them. They’ve seen how similar gimmicks pay off for their competitors – if you were willing to open your wallet for one brand, why not the other? • "description": "The 2025 General Election may be remembered as the one where politicians spoke more freely and voters began listening differently, says Hong Kong Baptist University’s Kenneth Paul Tan.",
      • "content": "HONG KONG: When Prime Minister Lawrence Wong appeared on Plan B in December 2024, it marked a quiet turning point in Singapore’s political communication . In a free-flowing chat, he spoke about redefining success, minority inclusion, entrepreneurship and Singapore’s humanitarian stance on Palestine. Weeks later, he joined The Daily Ketchup, reflecting on his journey into politics, how he became prime minister and his vision for Singapore’s future, peppered with questions about his MBTI personality type, diet and even secret ministerial chat groups. By April – just days before the 2025 General Election – he appeared on Yah Lah But to discuss leadership, public trust and why Singapore needs “radical change”, even from within. Mr Wong’s appearances weren’t outliers. Politicians across the spectrum turned to long-form, conversational media to appear more relatable, candid and emotionally accessible. The visibility of these engagements led many to call GE2025 Singapore’s first “podcast election”. But what did that really mean? My father, now in his 80s and ever politically attuned, noted that this election was different. “There’s so much information now. YouTube, podcasts, all coming straight from the politicians,” he said. In earlier elections, most Singaporeans relied on the national media, WhatsApp messages, taxi drivers and coffee shop talk. That media landscape has certainly changed. BLENDING ANALYSIS WITH ACCESSIBILITY When I began researching political podcasts in 2024, the scene was still relatively small, outside of mainstream media. Established platforms like CNA’s Deep Dive were already exploring political and policy issues in audio formats. But a handful of newer, independently produced channels – socialservice.sg, Teh Tarik with Walid and those mentioned earlier – were experimenting with a different tone and format: interviewing politicians across the spectrum, asking open-ended questions, and discussing politics in ways that felt both casual, less structured yet analytical. Since then, the ecosystem has expanded rapidly. In the United States, podcasts often amplify partisan divides, offering ideologically tailored content that mobilises like-minded listeners. In Australia , although party leaders actively engaged podcasts and TikTok during the recent campaign, expectations of a “podcaster-led” election ultimately fell flat amid disengagement and geopolitical shocks. Singapore’s politically engaged podcast scene is still young – especially compared to Australia’s more mature ecosystem – but already remarkably varied, with a mix of indie creators, academics, influencers and institutional media producing content that blends analysis with accessibility. Platforms like Jo Teo’s TikTok account (@suchabohr) and the YouTube series Red Dot Perspective also shaped the GE2025 media environment. Jo, an Oxford graduate student, drew attention for her sharp data-driven critiques of electoral boundaries, including a widely shared rebuttal of a well-known commentator. Her work was later cited by a constitutional law professor in a public lecture hosted by AcademiaSG. Red Dot Perspective delivered in-depth electoral analysis that often surpassed the anecdotal commentary of mainstream punditry. Though different in format from guest-driven podcasts, these channels reflect a growing appetite for accessible, evidence-based political discourse beyond party-aligned messaging. THE INFLUENCE OF PODCASTS Still, we should be cautious about overstating the electoral impact. Podcasts didn’t decide GE2025. The People’s Action Party retained a clear mandate. The Workers’ Party held its ground but made no major breakthroughs. Smaller opposition parties – whose candidates also appeared on podcasts, often to great effect – did not win a single seat. Virality did not translate into votes. Yet their influence should not be dismissed. Podcasts have changed how many Singaporeans engage with politics. Unlike press statements or rallies, they offer politicians room to breathe, reflect and even be funny or vulnerable. This is no small feat in a system long associated with technocratic restraint and party discipline. They also pose a unique challenge, especially to ruling party politicians used to carefully prepared messaging delivered with minimal scrutiny. On podcasts, they may not face hostile questions, but the challenge is subtler and arguably harder: maintaining clarity and composure in a relaxed, often humorous, self-deprecating environment. Do too little, and you seem stiff. Try too hard, and you risk sounding artificial or condescending. EVOLVING CULTURE OF POLITICAL SPEECH Podcast listeners tend to be younger, more networked and more likely to share what they hear. Even if the direct audience is modest, secondary circulation through social media and private discussion can be significant. This suggests a growing role for podcasts in future elections, alongside a growing need for clearer standards. As podcasts become more embedded in political communication, greater attention must be paid to transparency, especially around sponsored content. This is particularly important in Singapore, where the lines between government messaging and partisan promotion are often blurred. If podcasts are to retain public trust, disclosures around affiliation and sponsorship should be standard practice. Electoral politics in Singapore still depends on ground engagement, local trust and a party’s ability to deliver material benefits. Podcasts can support those efforts, but they can’t replace them. Their value is cultural and atmospheric. In a society where political speech is often cautious, podcasts have created space for risk, laughter and – at their best – honest connection. That’s not electoral revolution, but it’s not nothing either. GE2025 wasn’t decided by podcasts, but it may be remembered as the election where politicians spoke more freely, and voters began listening differently. Kenneth Paul Tan is a professor of politics, film and cultural studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. His recent article Podcasting Politics in Singapore: Hegemony, Resistance and Digital Media was published in Critical Asian Studies.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK : Alex Mashinsky, the founder and former chief executive of bankruptcy cryptocurrency lender Celsius Network, was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in December to securities fraud and commodities fraud. Mashinsky's sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge John Koeltl in Manhattan, and is among the longest in a criminal case arising from the 2022 meltdown in cryptocurrency markets. Sam Bankman-Fried, who led the FTX exchange, is serving a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted of fraud. He is appealing. Federal prosecutors said Mashinsky, 59, misled customers about Celsius' safety, and artificially inflated the value of Celsius' proprietary token Cel. They sought a prison term of at least 20 years, calling it \"just punishment\" for Mashinsky's having victimized thousands of people and caused billions of dollars in losses, while drawing more than $48 million of personal benefits. \"The case for tokenization and the use of digital assets is strong but it is not a license to deceive,\" U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton in Manhattan said in a statement. Mashinsky sought one year and one day in prison, saying he felt remorse and wanted to do right by his family and former Celsius customers. His sentence includes three years of supervised release and a $48.4 million forfeiture. Lawyers for Mashinsky were not immediately available to comment. Founded in 2017, Hoboken, New Jersey-based Celsius filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2022 after customers rushed to withdraw deposits as cryptocurrency prices fell. Born in Ukraine, Mashinsky emigrated with his family to Israel, and moved to New York after visiting the city in 1988. Cryptocurrency lenders have promised easy loan access and high interest rates to depositors while lending tokens to institutional investors, hoping to profit from the difference. Celsius offered 17 per cent interest on some deposits, but had a $1.19 billion balance sheet deficit when it sought bankruptcy protection. Mashinsky has also faced civil lawsuits by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, U.S. Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General Letitia James.",

On Wednesday one of Lockbit's darkweb sites was replaced with a message saying, \"Don't do crime CRIME IS BAD xoxo from Prague\" and a link to an apparent cache of leaked data. Reuters could not immediately verify the data, which appeared to capture chats between the hackers and their victims, among other things. But others who sifted through the material told Reuters it appeared authentic. \"It's legit,\" said Jon DiMaggio, the chief security strategist with the cybersecurity company Analyst1. Christiaan Beek, senior director of threat analytics at cybersecurity firm Rapid7, agreed the leak \"looks really authentic.\" He said he was struck by how it showed Lockbit's hackers hustling even for modest payouts from small businesses. \"They attack everyone,\" he said. Reuters could not immediately reach Lockbit or establish who had apparently leaked their data. Some darkweb sites associated with Lockbit appeared to be inoperative on Thursday, displaying a note saying they would be \"working soon.\" Lockbit is one of the world's most prolific cyber extortion gangs - diMaggio once called it \"the Walmart of ransomware groups\" - and it has survived past disruptions. Last year British and U.S. officials worked with a coalition of international law enforcement agencies to seize some of the gang's infrastructure. A few days later, the group defiantly announced it was back online, saying, \"I cannot be stopped.\" Behind the bravado, diMaggio said this week's hack was an embarrassment. \"I think it will hurt them and slow them down,\" he said.",

      • "content": "My new research suggests there is a stubborn pattern in academic publishing. examined some 8,000 articles published in the world’s most reputable economics journals to study citations, which are where academics cite previously published research in their papers. We found that papers whose lead authors had Chinese surnames received on average 14% fewer citations than comparable papers lead-written by those with non-Chinese names. This supports similar findings from previous studies in and , suggesting that citation prejudice is a cross-disciplinary problem. In reaching that conclusion, we put our raw findings through every test we could think of to rule out other explanations. Our first thought was that maybe Chinese-authored papers are more recently published on average than non-Chinese-authored papers, and therefore less cited. However the same citation gap holds for papers published in all years. Another obvious guess is that Chinese-authored papers are of lower quality. Some readers will have heard about the issue of ” companies that have in been churning out research papers based on fraudulent findings for Chinese universities. There that this may have made some Western academics more reluctant to take Chinese research seriously, but these are largely a problem for low-quality journals. We only looked at articles published in the top journals (rated as 4 or 4* in the ). Each paper has gone through a strict process of editorial review, often taking a couple of years, so they are far less likely to have been produced by high-volume paper mills. Additionally, almost half of the Chinese authors in our sample were affiliated outside China, so paper-mill allegations against Chinese authors are not relevant in our observations. Alternatively, you may be wondering if Chinese authors’ papers are less citable because of a language barrier in the writing. Again, this shouldn’t be an issue when all these papers have been strictly quality-assured by peer reviews and editorial reviews. The writing styles of Chinese authors in these journals do not seem significantly different from non-Chinese authors. We probed still more possibilities to explain the apparent discrimination, controlling for different factors and so on. But each time, the citation gap persisted – and sometimes became larger. Eventually we gave up trying to falsify the hypothesis, and turned to understanding why this ethnic discrimination exists. Why do economists discriminate? Picture the market for ideas as a miniature galaxy. Each paper is like a planet with its own mass, based on its quality, the authors’ stature and the perceived importance of the topic. Citations are like gravity, tugging knowledge towards these planets; the heavier the planet’s mass, the stronger the pull. Yet gravity also fades with distance, in this case meaning not kilometres but culture – language, networks and the subtle signals that tell us who feels familiar. It may be that the farther away a scholar seems on the cultural map, the weaker that scholar’s intellectual pull. Our findings show this “cultural distance” at work. Interestingly, the same thing happens in both directions: the ratio of Chinese-authored references is significantly higher in Chinese-authored papers than in non-Chinese-authored papers. Our next step was some detective work to deduce who exactly is discriminating. We identified four “suspects”: journal editors, reviewers, publishers and, finally, citers. If discrimination began with journal editors, they should only be publishing Chinese-led papers of comparably higher quality than other papers they publish. If so, you would expect these superior papers to be cited more, not less, which is at odds with the evidence. As for reviewers, most journals adopt a “double-blind” approach in which reviewers and authors don’t know each other’s identities. If reviewers don’t know when they’re dealing with a Chinese author, they cannot be discriminating on the basis of ethnicity. Similarly, publishers are not usually allowed to intervene in editorial decisions, so they cannot be discriminating either. This leaves the citers as the main discriminators, those who read academic papers and cite them in their own work. To get a clearer picture of what is happening, we compared three pairs of subgroups: We concluded that non-Chinese top economists from non-US institutions are the ones least likely to cite authors with Chinese surnames. This seems surprising given US rivalry with China, but actually it is a natural consequence. For US economists to study their biggest opponent, you would expect them to cite studies about China – and most or those are done by Chinese authors. Mitigating the discrimination One way of reducing the “Chineseness” of authorship is co-authoring with a non-Chinese academic. However in academic writing, a citation convention is that when a paper has over three authors, you only keep the surname of the first author (who is also the lead researcher). For example, a paper written by Zhang, Smith and Armstrong in 2025 will simply become “Zhang et al. (2025).” Therefore, bringing in more non-Chinese academics will make no difference. Another way of diluting “Chineseness” is for the lead author to become affiliated with a US institute. Per our study, this reduces the citation bias by 16%. However, obtaining such a US affiliation is not always feasible. This led us to conclude that the best way of reducing discrimination is to reduce the amount of author information in citations. For example, journals can request for citations to be by initials (“BG 1957”) or numeric codes (1, 2, 3), as market leaders like Nature already do. Journals can also use a digital object identifier such as “10.1234/example.article,” instead of disclosing author names in published references. This may not solve the problem of papers not being cited in the first place, but it can reduce the likelihood of subsequent citation bias as readers no longer know the surnames of cited papers. Discrimination is self-sabotage. Each time we discount a paper because the surname feels “foreign,” we put the brakes on our own progress. This slows insight, muffles debate and leaves the world poorer in ideas.",

      • "content": "Legislation that would create a regulatory framework for U.S. dollar-pegged cryptocurrency tokens known as stablecoins faced a setback on Thursday as the bill failed to clear a key hurdle in the U.S. Senate. The setback is a blow to the crypto industry, which has long pushed for lawmakers to pass legislation creating new rules for digital assets. The sector spent more than $119 million backing pro-crypto congressional candidates in last year's elections and had tried to paint the issue as bipartisan. Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, usually a 1:1 dollar peg, are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens. Their use has grown rapidly in recent years, and proponents say that they could be used to send payments instantly. Analysts and lobbyists had once considered stablecoin legislation almost certain to pass this year, but the bill - dubbed the GENIUS Act in the Senate - has faced pushback from Democrats as frustration has grown over President Donald Trump's various crypto ventures. In a vote on Thursday, only 49 senators voted to advance the bill to a full vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to formally end debate on the bill. Notably, two Republican senators - Senator Josh Hawley and Senator Rand Paul - voted alongside Democrats against moving forward with the bill. \"While we've made meaningful progress on the GENIUS Act, the work is not yet complete, and I simply cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to vote for this legislation when the text isn't finished,\" said Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat who earlier voted to advance the bill out of the Senate Banking Committee, in a statement. A group of Democrats, including Warner, that initially supported the legislation said on Saturday that Republicans had failed to negotiate on stronger provisions related to foreign stablecoin issues and anti-money-laundering protections. Senate Democrats more broadly have expressed concerns about the bill especially after Trump's crypto business World Liberty Financial announced last week that its stablecoin would be used by an Abu Dhabi investment firm for its $2 billion investment in crypto exchange Binance. In a speech on the Senate floor after the vote to move the bill toward a full vote failed, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed disappointment with Democrats, accusing them of denying the White House a bipartisan win. \"Not every bill that comes to the floor is a final bill,\" Thune said.",

      • "content": "LONDON :Andy Farrell was a rugby league international at 17 and captained his country at 21 so he was never likely to be phased by the “youth” of 20-year-old Henry Pollock, the most eye-catching name in the British and Irish Lions squad. The feisty flanker began the season as an England under-20 with one Premiership game under his belt but he now has a full England cap – and two tries – is in the European Champions Cup final with Northampton and has been shortlisted for the tournament’s player of the year after bagging seven tries Pollock was already obviously on Farrell’s radar but he became an unmissable blip last Saturday when he starred in front of the watching Lions coach in his club’s European semi-final win over a Leinster team who would go on to supply 12 Lions in the squad named on Thursday to tour Australia. A flash of individual brilliance, when he skinned flyhalf Sam Prendergast on the outside like a winger, was an eye-popping moment but Farrell is as likely to have been more impressed by Pollock's work in the trenches as he battled at every breakdown and was still doing so in the final, decisive seconds when Saints forced the winning turnover on their own line. “When you see a player like that it doesn’t matter what age he is, if you are good enough, you are old enough,” Farrell said after announcing his 38-man squad where the battle for back row berths was probably the most competitive of all his decisions. “I've heard a lot of stuff, not just about Henry, but all youngsters, that they are confident and cocky, but what do we want? Do we want a kid to show his confidence at 23 or 24 or at 20? It's about the here and now. If he's performing against the quality that he has been doing, then he's ready. \"You can see the fight in him and I’m sure he’ll push the others who didn’t realise he was coming. He should relish that.\" Given how unfazed Pollock was reported to have been when he joined the England camp, he looks very likely to do exactly that. The star performer in England's World under-20-winning team last year, he was already brimming with what some labelled arrogance but what his admirers called justified self-belief. He had already upset, then won the respect of Courtney Lawes at Northampton and then did the same to his England senior colleagues when Steve Borthwick promoted him during the Six Nations. When he finally got his chance as a 48th-minute replacement in the final game against Wales he grasped it as many thought he would, by charging over for two tries in a crushing England victory. It still seemed a huge leap to make the Lions, however, particularly with the quality of flankers at Farrell's disposal. Pollock though looks a special sort of player. Blessed with a back's pace, he is powerful and athletic and also has the snarling, aggressive attitude that is a given for all the best number 7s. “I’ve watched him a couple of times live and I like what I see,\" Farrell said. \"He’s trying to make a difference. There’s an energy and a bounce about him and that’s how you tend to have big moments in the game. That's what I like to see in his game.\"",

      • "content": "WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday (May 8) urged India and Pakistan to take immediate steps to de-escalate and engage in dialogue, as he pressed Islamabad to end any support for \"terrorist groups\". The two nuclear-armed neighbours have engaged in deadly confrontations in recent days, after New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing an attack on the Indian-run side of disputed Kashmir. Pakistan has denied the charge. Rubio, in calls with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, \"emphasised the need for immediate de-escalation\", a State Department statement said. \"He expressed US support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications,\" said spokeswoman Tammy Bruce. In his call with Sharif, Rubio \"reiterated his calls for Pakistan to take concrete steps to end any support for terrorist groups\". He also \"expressed sorrow for the reported loss of civilian lives in the current conflict\". India says it has targeted “terrorist camps” on Pakistani territory following the killing of 26 people, nearly all Hindu tourists, in Pahalgam, a town in Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22. It has blamed the attack on a Pakistan-based group. Islamabad rejects the accusation and has called for an independent investigation. The latest escalation has seen waves of drone and missile strikes exchanged between the two countries, with both militaries claiming to have neutralised attacks and inflicted heavy casualties. Civilian deaths have been reported on both sides, and several airports in the region were temporarily shut down. Explosions were reported at Jammu airport in Indian administered Kashmir late Thursday, while cities in Pakistan including Lahore and Rawalpindi have also been hit in recent days, according to local authorities. Global powers including the US, China and Russia have called for restraint amid fears of wider conflict.",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: USA Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the new pope and leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday (May 8), and has taken the name Pope Leo XIV a senior cardinal announced to crowds in St. Peter's Square. Pope Leo, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica around 70 minutes after white smoke billowed from a chimney atop the Sistine Chapel signifying the 133 cardinal electors had chosen a new leader for the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church. He greeted crowds on Thursday evening, speaking in Italian, and Spanish, and offering a solemn blessing. Pope Leo XIV, is the first pontiff from the US in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. The choice of Prevost was announced by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti with the Latin words \"Habemus Papam\" (We have a pope) to tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to hear the news. Aged 69 and originally from Chicago, Prevost has spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru and became a cardinal only in 2023. He has given a few media interviews and rarely speaks in public. Leo becomes the 267th Catholic pope after the death of Pope Francis, who was the first Latin American pope and had led the Church for 12 years, and widely sought to open the staid institution up to the modern world. Francis enacted a range of reforms and allowed debate on divisive issues such as women's ordination and better inclusion of LGBT Catholics. Ahead of the conclave, some cardinals called for continuity with Francis' vision of greater openness and reform, while others said they wanted to turn back the clock and embrace old traditions. POPE LEO XIV FROM THE AUGUSTINIAN ORDER Prevost, a 69 member of the Augustinian religious order, took the name Leo XIV. He appeared on the loggia of St. Peter's Square wearing the traditional red cape of the papacy — a cape that Pope Francis had eschewed on his election in 2013. Prevost had been a leading candidate except for his nationality. There had long been a taboo against a US pope, given the geopolitical power already wielded by the United States in the secular sphere. But Prevost, a Chicago native, was seemingly eligible also because he’s a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop. Francis had his eye on Prevost and, in many ways, saw him as his heir apparent. He brought Prevost to the Vatican in 2023 to serve as the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations from around the world, one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church. As a result, Prevost had a prominence going into the conclave that few other cardinals have. Crowds in St Peter's Square erupted in cheers, priests made the sign of the cross and nuns wept as the crowd shouted “Viva il papa!” after the white smoke wafted into the late afternoon sky at 6:07 p.m. Waving flags from around the world, tens of thousands of people waited to learn who had won. FORMER CONCLAVES NEEDED UP TO 14 BALLOTS For much of the past century, the conclave has needed between three and 14 ballots to find a pope. John Paul I — the pope who reigned for 33 days in 1978 — was elected on the fourth ballot. His successor, John Paul II, needed eight. Francis was elected on the fifth in 2013. The voting followed a strict choreography, dictated by church law. Each cardinal writes his choice on a piece of paper inscribed with the words “Eligo in summen pontificem” — “I elect as supreme pontiff.” They approach the altar one by one and say: “I call as my witness, Christ the Lord, who will be my judge, that my vote is given to the one who, before God, I think should be elected.” The folded ballot is placed on a round plate and tipped into a silver and gold urn. Once cast, the ballots are opened one by one by three different “scrutineers,” cardinals selected at random who write down the names and read them aloud. The scrutineers, whose work is checked by other cardinals called revisers, then add up the results of each round of balloting and write them on a separate sheet of paper, which is preserved in the papal archives. As the scrutineer reads out each name, he pierces each ballot with a needle through the word “Eligo.\" All the ballots are then bound together with thread, and the bundle is put aside and burned in the chapel stove along with a chemical to produce the smoke. Then on Thursday evening, came the anticipated white smoke, and a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV.",

• "content": "India has lost its top fighter jet, the Rafale EH. Three Rafale jets were shot down. In addition, at least one Sukhoi and one MIG plus a large Israel reconnaissance drone were destroyed by Pakistan’s air force. Until the latest air combat, India had acquired 34 Rafale jet fighters. These are multimission platforms suitable for all combat aviation missions: air superiority and air defense, close air support, in-depth strikes, reconnaissance, anti-ship strikes and nuclear deterrence. In the latest confrontation, which apparently lasted around an hour, the Rafales were carrying SCALP cruise missiles, which in the UK are known as Storm Shadow. These missiles have been used extensively in Ukraine. The Rafales also had MICA (missile d’interception, de combat et d’auto-défense) air-to-air missiles. At least one of these missiles was found near the crash site of the first Rafale that was downed. That Rafale had a tail designation of BS-001, meaning it was the first Rafale delivered to the Indian air force. BS means single seat. The combat that took place was at a distance, not a classical close-encounter dogfight. Pakistan was operating over Pakistani air space when its J-10 jet (Chinese but co-produced in Pakistan) launched Chinese PL-15 air to air missiles. Some parts of a PL-15 missile have been recovered on Indian territory, including part of its AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar. The PL-15 is China’s answer to the US AIM-120D AMRAAM (advanced medium-range air-to-air missile) which is an all-weather, beyond-visual-range missile. It has a range of 200 to 300 km (124 to 186 miles), although the export version is 145 km (90 miles). It is assumed Pakistan has the export model. The PL-15 is pretty fast. Once launched, its speed is around Mach-5 (6,173 kph or 3,836 mph). By way of contrast, the French MICA air to air missile has a significantly shorter range, around 60 to 80 km (37 to 50 miles). Thus the Chinese PL-15 as a stand-off weapon has a significant advantage. That seems to have paid off in the recent encounter. The US Air Force has put most of its bets on two capabilities: Consequently, fighters such as the F-35 have traded off maneuverability to emphasize stealth, and have long-range air-to-air missiles to support BVR encounters. The Rafale is not a stealth platform and, while in many ways technologically advanced, it is not as BVR capable as Chinese-designed jets and air-to-air missiles. Furthermore, even the AMRAAM seems to fall short of the mark in any competition, meaning that the AMRAAM will need to be replaced with a longer-range and faster air-to-air missile. Russia also has a BVR air-to-air missile, the R-77 which is being upgraded. A new version, R-77M, designed for Russia’s new Su-57 fighter, has a dual pulse motor (like China’s PL-15) and AESA radar. Quite possibly it incorporates Chinese technology. Russia also appears to have a scramjet-powered version of the R-77. Nothing is known of the range of either missile, although the earlier R-77 was inferior in range to AMRAAM. What happened to India in the latest firefight is bad news for NATO, which appears to be falling behind technologically – and it is a warning to the United States to speed up development of an AMRAAM replacement. While the US has a new replacement for AMRAAM, designated as the AIM-260 JATM (joint advanced tactical missile), as of now it is in low-rate production and has not achieved initial operational capability. Supposedly, it has a range of 200 km (124 miles), putting it at the low end compared to the PL-15. There is still a lot more to be learned about the latest encounter between the Pakistani and Indian air forces. There may be more bad news.",

      • "content": "ROME :Carlos Alcaraz said he is back to his best for the Italian Open after suffering injuries last month while the Spaniard also welcomed back world number one Jannik Sinner, who is poised for a comeback on home soil after serving a doping suspension. Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid Open last month after struggling with hamstring and groin injuries he had sustained during the Barcelona Open final, opting to take a break so he could recover well before his French Open title defence. Alcaraz, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Monday, received a bye into the second round in Rome where he will play Serbia's Dusan Lajovic. \"I'm really happy to be here in Rome... The practices were great so far. I'm in a good shape, I'm 100 per cent ready to start the tournament,\" Alcaraz told reporters on Thursday. \"I couldn't play Madrid. It was a special tournament for me... But I could play really good tournaments in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, good matches. I stopped a little bit to try to recover from the injury, which I wasn't worried (about) at all. \"Right now I have confidence... Obviously I would say the first round in every tournament is never easy, you have to get used to the conditions, the tournament, the court, everything. But I'm just excited, I can't wait for tomorrow.\" Alcaraz is the third seed in Rome and the Spaniard said he hopes to meet Sinner in the final, with both players on opposite sides of the draw. The Italian has remained world number one despite serving a three-month doping ban as the three-times Grand Slam champion prepares for his first match since winning the Australian Open in January. \"Honestly, I'm really happy to have him around again. It's been three months. Obviously for him it was tough,\" Alcaraz added. \"I think there isn't a better place to come back than here in his home, for him here in Rome. I saw him, it is great for me, for tennis and for the fans to have him around again. \"I'm real happy to see him and his team around. I think I'm going to enjoy watching him playing again.\"",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: US Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday (May 8), taking the name Leo XIV, becoming the first pontiff from the US. Pope Leo, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica around 70 minutes after white smoke had billowed from a chimney atop the Sistine Chapel signifying the 133 cardinal electors had chosen a new leader for the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church. \"Peace be with you all,\" the new pope told the cheering crowd, speaking in fluent Italian. He also spoke in Spanish during his brief address but did not say anything in English. Aged 69 and originally from Chicago, Prevost has spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru, and became a cardinal only in 2023. He has given few media interviews and rarely speaks in public. President Donald Trump swiftly congratulated Prevost on becoming the first US pope. \"What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!\" \"HABEMUS PAPAM\" The choice of Prevost was announced by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti with the Latin words \"Habemus Papam\" (We have a pope) to tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to hear the news. Pope Leo becomes the 267th Catholic pope after the death last month of Pope Francis , who was the first Latin American pope and had led the Church for 12 years and widely sought to open the staid institution up to the modern world. Pope Francis enacted a range of reforms and allowed debate on divisive issues such as women's ordination and better inclusion of LGBT Catholics. Ahead of the conclave, some cardinals called for continuity with Francis' vision of greater openness and reform, while others said they wanted to turn back the clock and embrace old traditions. During the conclave the cardinals' only communication with the outside world was through the smoke emerging from the chimney - black for no pope yet picked, white signalling a new pontiff chosen by a majority of at least two-thirds. The cardinals held an initial inconclusive vote on Wednesday evening and a further two followed on Thursday morning. They returned to the Sistine Chapel at 4pm (10pm, Singapore time) and at around 6.08pm the white smoke emerged. During the conclave, cardinals were sequestered from the world and sworn to secrecy, their phones and computers confiscated, while they were shuttled between the Sistine Chapel for voting and two Vatican guesthouses to sleep and dine. The average number of ballots it has taken to be elected over the past 10 conclaves was 7.2. Pope Francis was elected after five in 2013.",

White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St Peter's rang out, signalling that cardinals had elected a new pope to succeed Pope Francis and take charge of the Roman Catholic Church. The election came on the first full day of voting by the 133 cardinal electors, who secluded themselves behind the Vatican's medieval walls on Wednesday afternoon. A joyous crowd in St Peter's Square cheered and applauded as the first puffs of smoke emerged from a small chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, where the cardinals have been holding their secret ballot. The new pontiff Pope Leo XIV will then step forward to deliver his first public address and blessing to the gathered crowds. Pope Francis died on Apr 21 after ruling the 1.4-billion member Church for 12 years. • "content": "VATICAN CITY: Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV on Thursday (May 8) after cardinals from around the globe chose him to be the first leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics to hail from the United States. Tens of thousands of well-wishers cheered as Pope Leo, successor to the late Pope Francis, appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica to deliver the first address of his ministry. \"To all people, wherever they are, to all peoples, to the whole Earth, peace be with you,\" a smiling Pope Leo told the crowd. \"Help us, and each other, to build bridges through dialogue, through encounter, to come together as one people, always in peace.\" Pope Leo's speech drew warm applause, especially a section where the prelate, who spent many years in Peru, broke into Spanish, and also when he paid tribute to his popular predecessor, who died last month. \"We still keep in our ears that weak, but always courageous, voice of Pope Francis blessing Rome,\" he said, referring to the ailing Argentine's Easter Sunday address, a day before his death. \"We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, which holds dialogues, which is always open,\" he said. \"GREAT HONOUR\" The 69-year-old Prevost had been talked about as among the \"papabili\" – cardinals thought qualified for the papacy – and as someone who could defend and further Francis' legacy. But he was not a globally recognised figure among the Catholic rank and file. World leaders raced to welcome his election as the 267th pope and promise to work with the Church on global issues at a time of great geopolitical uncertainty. Pope Leo, who spent years as a missionary in Peru, now faces a momentous task. As well as asserting his moral voice on a conflict-torn world stage, he must try to unite a divided Church and tackle burning issues such as the continued fallout from the sexual abuse scandal. As Cardinal Prevost, the new pope had defended the poor and underprivileged and had reposted articles online critical of US President Donald Trump's anti-migrant policies, but the White House chief nevertheless welcomed the election. \"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named pope,\" Trump said in a post on his social media platform. \"It is such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a great honour for our country.\" It was not known how many ballots it took to elect Pope Leo XIV, but the conclave followed recent history in wrapping up in less than two days. While the details of the election will forever remain secret, the new pope had to secure at least two-thirds of the votes to be elected. \"AMAZING\" The crowds had swelled with emotion when white smoke billowed into the sky from the Sistine Chapel chimney Thursday, signalling an election on the cardinals' second day of voting. The bells of St Peter's Basilica and churches across Rome rang out and crowds rushed towards the square to watch the balcony of the basilica, fitted out with red curtains for the first address from the new pope, who was introduced in Latin. \"It's an amazing feeling,\" said an elated Joseph Brian, a 39-year-old chef from Belfast in Northern Ireland, who came with his mother to Rome for the spectacle. \"I'm not an overly religious person but being here with all these people just blew me away,\" he told AFP as people around him jumped up and down in excitement. There were euphoric scenes as one priest sat on someone's shoulders waving a Brazilian flag and another lifted a heavy crucifix into the air in jubilation. \"HABEMUS PAPAM\" \"Habemus Papam, woooo!\" shouted Bruna Hodara, 41, from Brazil, echoing the words to be spoken on the balcony as the new pope is introduced. She, like others, recorded the historic moment on her phone, as others waved flags and cried out \"long live the pope!\" in Italian. The papal inauguration usually takes place less than a week after the election with a mass celebrated before political and religious leaders from around the world. Ahead of that, Pope Leo will lead a mass Friday for cardinals in the Sistine Chapel and recite the Regina Caeli prayer in St Peter's Square on Sunday. He will also hold an audience for the world's media on Monday. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told journalists that Prevost's choice of papal name was \"a clear reference to the social doctrine of the church\". The previous Pope Leo – Leo XIII, who was pope at the end of the 19th century – was a determined defender of the rights of workers. Pope Francis died aged 88 after a 12-year papacy during which he sought to forge a more compassionate Church. While he provoked anger from conservatives with his progressive approach, there had been many Catholics calling for a successor in his vein. Some 80 per cent of the cardinals who voted for Prevost were appointed by Francis. With electors hailing from 70 countries around the world, it was the most international conclave ever.",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday (May 8) and the bells of St Peter's rang out, signalling that cardinals have elected a new pope to succeed Pope Francis and take charge of the Roman Catholic Church. The identity of the pope and the name he has chosen as pontiff will be announced to the world from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica shortly. The new pope will then step forward to deliver his first public address and blessing to the gathered crowds. Pope Francis died on Apr 21 after ruling the 1.4-billion member Church for 12 years. During his reign, he sought to open up the staid institution to the modern world, enacting a range of reforms and allowing debate on divisive issues such as women's ordination and better inclusion of LGBT Catholics. While no clear favourites had emerged to succeed him, Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who served as the Vatican's number two under Francis, and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle were considered the frontrunners. Other \"papabili\" - potential papal candidates in Italian - were France's Jean-Marc Aveline, Hungary's Peter Erdo, American Robert Prevost, Italy's Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Filipino Pablo Virgilio David. The cardinals will have had to decide whether to pick someone to build on Francis' vision of greater openness and reform, or else choose a more conservative figure. During the conclave their only communication with the outside world was through the smoke emerging from the chimney - black for no pope yet picked, white signalling a new pontiff chosen by a majority of at least two-thirds. Francis was elected after five in 2013.",

      • "content": "The Federal Reserve Board’s May 7 decision to leave interest rates unchanged wasn’t a surprise, but there may be surprises ahead. Markets are expecting the Fed to cut its benchmark interest rate a couple of times later this year from the current 4.25% to 4.5%. They could be right. But cuts aren’t the only possibility. Depending on what happens economically in the months ahead, the Fed could lower rates, raise them or leave them unchanged. The Fed’s statement announcing the decision of its May meeting and Chair Jerome Powell’s commentary stress how uncertain the economic outlook has become. If the economy later this year looks like the economy today, the Fed would likely leave rates unchanged. Today, the noted, “inflation remains somewhat elevated” while “the unemployment rate has stabilized at a low level.” If at future meetings the Fed is confident that inflation is falling to its 2% target, it could indeed cut rates. If at those meetings it sees inflation remaining elevated but the unemployment rate rising, it could also cut. Those are big ifs, however. The Fed says risks are rising that inflation and unemployment will both worsen during the next several months. If that happens, it could force the Fed to choose between fighting inflation by raising rates or fighting unemployment by lowering them. “The new administration is in the process of implementing substantial policy changes in four distinct areas: trade, immigration, fiscal policy, and regulation,” . “The tariff increases announced so far have been significantly larger than anticipated. All of these policies are still evolving, however, and their effects on the economy remain highly uncertain.” Powell’s Fed is under attack by President Donald Trump, who wanted rate cuts on Wednesday and who calls Powell “Mr. Too Late.” Yet, despite the president’s on-and-off threats to can Powell – which he may not have the legal power to do – don’t assume the Fed will bow to the pressure. A central bank that appeared to be bowing to political pressure against its better economic judgment would not just be undermining its own independent status. It would risk financial markets panicking. Trump wants the Fed to cut preemptively, before the economy turns down. But because the Fed doesn’t know whether inflation or unemployment will be the bigger problem in the months ahead, it isn’t sure cutting will make sense. In its economic judgment, waiting, not acting, makes the most sense. Not only does the Fed have to worry about inflation; it has to worry about inflationary expectations. History suggests that if consumers and businesses believe prices are going to rise, they’ll rise; adjustments to expected inflation cause inflation. Those expectations are “well anchored” now – Americans aren’t anticipating big future price increases. But that could change quickly if prices start to go up sharply. Memories of supercharged inflation in 2021 and 2022 linger. Expectations could become unanchored easily. The Fed, then, won’t have the liberty of assuming that tariff-driven price increases are one-time, “transitory” increases, as it mistakenly deemed the supply-chain price increases the country saw during the Covid epidemic. Powell knows he really was “too late” raising rates then. “Our obligation,” Powell said, “is to keep longer-term inflation expectations well anchored and to prevent a one-time increase in the price level from becoming an ongoing inflation problem.” Congress has given the Fed a dual mandate – maximum employment and stable prices. But economic history suggests that when push comes to shove, central banks should make stable prices the priority. As Powell put it, “Without price stability, we cannot achieve the long periods of strong labor market conditions that benefit all Americans.” Farmers, ranchers and other business borrowers have to hope the markets are right and more interest-rate cuts lie ahead. The reality is that the interest-rate outlook is increasingly uncertain, reflecting the increasingly uncertain economic outlook. on",
