      • "content": "DIYARBAKIR (Reuters) - Hours after the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) announced it was disbanding its armed wing, families gathered outside an office in the Turkish city of Diyarbakir, many with tears in their eyes and photos in their hands. Some talked about the chances for peace, but many had more pressing personal concerns - the children and other loved ones who had left to join the armed struggle over the decades who they hoped and prayed might now be able to come home. \"I haven't seen my son in 10 years,\" said Sevgi Cagmar, whose son was 19 when he joined the PKK. \"I stayed awake for nights waiting for this news. If he comes back, the world will be mine.\" Cagmar joined scores of other relatives waiting for news at the office run by the pro-Kurdish DEM Party in the largest city in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast. All held out the hope that their relatives and friends would return - families usually get information if someone has died. Hatice Levent clutched an image of her daughter Fadime who she believes joined the PKK 11 years ago when she was a university student. She accused the DEM of helping to arrange her daughter's departure. \"They stole her dreams, our future. I just want to hug her again. I'm waiting with open arms,\" Levent said. She thanked Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan for launching what she hopes is a final peace effort. 'WHAT COMES NEXT' There have been many reports of PKK militants losing touch with their families for years. Much of the fighting in the past was focused in the rural areas of southeast Turkey. But the conflict has since mainly moved to northern Iraq, where the PKK has bases in the mountains. Turkey has dozens of outposts in Iraqi territory and monitors its border with Iraq to stop people crossing back over. \"This war must end. Soldiers, police the ones in the mountains — all of them are our children,\" said Sultan Guger, whose son joined the PKK 10 years ago. \"Brother has killed brother. We don't want any more pain.\" In other cities in the region, people greeted the news with cautious hope - welcoming the chance of peace, but fearful of the future after more than 40 years of conflict. \"The PKK was an organization that brought Kurdish issues to the forefront,\" said Ihsan Ergiz from the southeastern city of Batman. \"If democratic rights are finally granted, disbanding is natural. It will be better for our country.\" \"Laying down arms is good, but we don't know what comes next,\" said a resident of Diyarbakir who did not give their name. \"Will prisoners be released? We can't see the full picture.\" (Reporting by Sertac Kayar, Writing by Ece Toksabay; Editing by Andrew Heavens)",

He said that he was confident the contest between the two prominent figures in the party would not lead to conflict or division among members. \"This is democracy. If we go through this process in a healthy way, campaign positively, and accept the outcome, we move on - what matters is that we are clear on what we're doing. \"The people are watching, and there will be an impact in the coming general election. So we must do our best to ensure the party is in a strong position to face the (general) election and secure a positive outcome so that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains as Prime Minister,\" he said. Nik Nazmi, who is also Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, said this after officiating a Motor Vehicle Enforcement Operation here on Monday (May 12). When asked about his confidence in defending his Vice President post, Nik Nazmi said: \"If I wasn't confident, I wouldn't contest. If the delegates choose me, I'll remain.\" In this PKR election, the deputy president post would see a straight fight between Rafizi and Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is unchallenged for the top post. For the four vice president posts, 12 individuals have submitted their nominations, including four incumbents -Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Nik Nazmi, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang, and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. The PKR National Congress, including the Youth Wing (AMK) and Women's Congress, is scheduled to take place from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru, with May 23 set as polling day. – Bernama",

      • "content": "(Reuters) -Chegg said on Monday it would lay off about 22% of its workforce, or 248 employees, to cut costs and streamline its operations as students increasingly turn to AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT over traditional edtech platforms. The company, an online education firm that offers textbook rentals, homework help and tutoring, has been grappling with a decline in web traffic for months and warned that the trend would likely worsen before improving. Google's expansion of AI Overviews is keeping web traffic confined within its search ecosystem while gradually shifting searches to its Gemini AI platform, Chegg said, adding that other AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic were courting academics with free access to subscriptions. As part of the restructuring announced on Monday, Chegg will also shut its U.S. and Canada offices by the end of the year and aim to reduce its marketing, product development efforts and general and administrative expenses. The majority of the resulting charges of $34 million to $38 million are expected to be incurred in the second and third quarters. Chegg expects cost savings of between $45 and $55 million in 2025 and $100 to $110 million in 2026 due to the restructuring. It also reported first-quarter results on Monday, saying subscribers declined 31% in the period to 3.2 million. Revenue declined 30% to $121 million, as its subscription services revenue fell by nearly a third to $108 million. In February, Chegg sued Google saying Google's internet search engine was eroding demand for original content and undermining publishers' ability to compete with its artificial intelligence-generated overviews, thereby causing a drop in visitors and subscribers. Chegg had 1,271 employees as of December 31. (Reporting by Kritika Lamba in Bengaluru; Editing by Devika Syamnath)",

      • "content": "IPOH: Support for Nurul Izzah Anwar in contesting the post of deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in the 2025-2028 party election is seen as crucial to strengthening the party in preparation for the 16th General Election (GE16). PKR deputy information chief I, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, said her proven leadership as a \"war commander\" was once again needed, referring to her successful tenure as election director during GE14, when the party secured a significant number of seats. \"We need her to take on the role of election director for the next GE, using the same strategy that helped PKR win 47 seats in GE14. \"The highest number of seats we've ever won was under Nurul Izzah's leadership as election director. Her track record speaks for itself. \"If she becomes deputy president and takes charge of the election machinery again, I believe we can win 70 or even 80 seats,\" he told reporters after a special meeting with PKR division chiefs at Casuarina Hotel here on Monday (May 12). Ramanan, also the Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, said support for Nurul Izzah was clearly evident from the strong attendance at the meeting, with 22 out of 24 Perak division chiefs present. He also said that the Indian community was growing supportive of PKR, as seen by their increased participation in past elections. This development, he said, was due to the Madani government's commitment to the community, including the largest-ever budget allocation in history. \"We've allocated nearly RM400mil for initiatives targeting the Indian community, compared to only RM100mil previously under the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra),\" he said. Key programmes include the Indian Community Entrepreneur Development Scheme (SPUMI) and Bank Rakyat Indian Entrepreneur Financing-i (BRIEF-i). Apart from Ramanan, 11 leaders have filed nominations for the party's Vice President post, including four incumbents - Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. • "content": "NEW YORK, May 12 — Deep in the bowels of the UN headquarters, a pump sucks in huge amounts of water from the East River to help cool the complex with an old but energy-efficient mechanism. As more and more people want to stay cool in a planet that is steadily heating up, energy experts point to this kind of water-based system as a good alternative to air conditioning. But in many cases they are hard to set up.The system has been part of the New York complex since it opened in the 1950s, chief building engineer Michael Martini told AFP during a tour of the cooling equipment. The system, overhauled with the rest of the complex from 2008 to 2014, cools the UN centre using less energy than a conventional air conditioning system. UN policy is to bring the air temperature down to about 24 degrees Celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer in New York, the river running beside the UN headquarters — it is actually a salt water estuary — stays much cooler than the surrounding air, which can reach 100 degrees. So cooling the building eats up less energy. As many as 26,000 litres per minute (7,000 gallons) of water flow through fibre glass pipes to the complex’s cooling plant, which uses it and a refrigerant gas to produce cold. The system has two independent loops to prevent contamination of the water that flows back into the river at a higher temperature, said the head of the cooling system, David Lindsay.Looking at the gleaming glass tower of the UN headquarters and the dome of the General Assembly, you would never know that the East River serves this purpose for the UN and is more than just part of the scenery. The UN’s New York headquarters is not its only building that depends on water. In Geneva, its Palais de Nations features a cooling system that uses water from Lake Geneva. And the UN City complex in Copenhagen, which houses 10 UN agencies, depends on cold seawater that almost eliminates the need for electricity to cool the place. This a huge benefit compared to the estimated two billion air conditioning units installed around a world. Why so rare? With the number of air conditioners due to increase so as to help people who are more and more exposed to dangerous temperatures, energy consumption for the purpose of cooling has already tripled since 1990, says the International Energy Agency, which wants more efficient systems. Water supply pipes are seen at the Chiller Plant at United Nations Headquarters. — AFP pic Examples of these are centralised air conditioning networks using electricity, geothermal systems or ones that use water, like the UN complex in New York. This latter system “has not been deployed as much as it should be for the issues we face today,” said Lily Riahi, coordinator of Cool Coalition, a grouping of states, cities and companies under the aegis of the United Nations. Some big organisations have been able to run such systems on their own, like the United Nations or Cornell University in New York State, which relies on water from Lake Cayuga. But for the most part these systems require a lot of coordination among multiple stakeholders, said Riahi.“We know it’s technically possible, and we know actually there are many cases that prove the economics as well,” said Rob Thornton, president of the International District Energy Association, which helps develop district cooling and heating networks.“But it requires someone, some agent, whether it’s a champion, a city, or a utility or someone, to actually undertake the aggregation of the market,” he said.“The challenge is just gathering and aggregating the customers to the point where there’s enough, where the risk can be managed,” Thornton said.He cited Paris as an example, which uses the Seine River to run Europe’s largest water-based cooling grid. These networks allow for the reduced use toxic substances as coolants, and lower the risk of leaks. And they avoid emissions of hot air — like air conditioning units spew — into cities already enduring heat waves. But hot water from cooling units, when dumped back into rivers and other bodies of water, is dangerous for aquatic ecosystems, environmentalists say.“This challenge is quite small, compared to the discharge from nuclear plants,” said Riahi, adding the problem can be addressed by setting a temperate limit on this water. — AFP",

      • "content": "BANGKOK, May 12 — A 28-year-old budding politician in Pathum Thani, a Thai province north of Bangkok, won the local municipal election yesterday, less than a month after being involved in a serious car crash that injured a couple in their 60s. Smitthiphat Leenawarat whose parents are both veteran politicians, faces multiple charges including reckless driving and assault from the April 16 incident when his brand new BMW sideswiped a pick-up truck carrying 65-year-old Prachak Duangyai and his wife Somsri, 64, in Pathum Thani. Despite the legal issues, Smitthiphat won the municipal election by over 1,000 votes, The Bangkok Post reported today. “For over 30 years, I have been serving my fellow people. Today it is proved that Thanyaburi people love my family sincerely and seriously,” Smitthiphat’s father and a former mayor, Krissada Leenawarat, awas quoted as saying in thanking voters in the municipal election. Krissada was also reported to have addressed the ongoing crash case. He said his family had done their best to help the victims but the matter remained unresolved due to a “third party.” “I will let the justice system handle my son’s case and I will not exercise any influence because my family had no connections,” he was quoted as saying. Smitthiphat’s mother, Yupayao Leenawarat, is also an elected mayor of the same municipality. “If we had not served the local people well, we would not have won the election given the recent issues of my son,” she was quoted as saying. Smitthiphat also thanked local residents for their support after the election and pledged to serve the constituents, just like his father. Smitthiphat was reported to have been fined 6,000 baht for driving with an expired licence in the April 16 car crash. Following the crash, Smitthiphat appeared on national Thai TV alongside his father to explain what happened. He claimed to be travelling at 80–100 kilometres per hour after passing a toll gate when the pick-up truck carrying the elderly couple cut into his lane, causing him to crash into a road barrier. He claimed he was reaching below to retrieve an undisclosed item when his BMW collided with the truck again while trying to stop it for a discussion. “I deeply regret the accident and had no intention of injuring [the victims],” he was quoted as saying by The Bangkok Post in a separate news article . He added that he would cover medical costs and offer financial help. The occupants of the pick-up truck were reported to have been injured in the crash. The husband Prachak suffered six broken ribs and remains in intensive care, while his wife’s condition was not disclosed in the news report. The case remains under police investigation.",

      • "content": "ETEN (Peru), May 12 — In the small Peruvian town of Eten, the faithful flock every year to celebrate an apparent 17th century miracle featuring images of the child Jesus, a sacred phenomenon not yet recognised by the Vatican. But the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, who for years served as a missionary in Peru, has rekindled hopes of official recognition — and a shrine worthy of the Eucharistic miracle, the only one of its kind reported in the Andean country.Robert Prevost, who became the first US-born pontiff last week, spent more than two decades in Peru. From 2015 to 2023, he was bishop of the diocese of Chiclayo, a city 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Eten on the northern coast.“With this pope who lived here in Chiclayo, and who knows the subject well, they’ll soon recognise us as a Eucharistic city,” said optimist Catalino Puican. In the main room of the 93-year-old’s single-storey Eten house, an entire wall serves as an altar, as in many homes in the town of 14,000.Statuettes of the Virgin Mary, candles, rosaries and portraits of the deceased bear witness to the local religious fervour. It was in an ancient village founded near this site by the Spanish in the 16th century, a few hundred meters from windswept dunes, that the so-called Eucharistic Miracle of Eten is said to have taken place. On June 2, 1649, an image of a young Jesus and three small hearts is believed to have appeared to dozens of faithful during a eucharist, a Catholic ceremony in which bread and wine — representing the body and blood of Christ — are consecrated.A second image is said to have appeared weeks later, during another religious festival. The events inspired a passionate local devotion that continues to this day.‘A gift’ for Peru A woman looks at an image of the Divino Nino del Milagro (Divine Child of the Miracle) at the Santa Maria Magdalena church in Eten. — AFP pic Locals believe official recognition of the miracle could attract more devotees.A small shrine now welcomes pilgrims to the ancient town, where a few ruins mark the site.“Every week, people arrive with testimonies about miracles they have received, whether it is healing of illnesses, or curing infertility,” said Eduardo Zarpan, a 26-year-old guide to the area.Anxious to provide the site a more holy dimension, in 2019 Leo XIV, then bishop of the diocese, began the process of formally recognizing what locals believe occurred centuries ago.“The Eucharistic miracle is a gift for all Peru,” Prevost stated in 2022. “Building this new shrine is a task for all of us. It’s a dream we want to make come true.”Veronique Lecaros, head of the theology department at Peru’s Pontifical Catholic University, noted that the process “is a long one,” as it involves “an investigation into how the miracle happened.”Its recognition ultimately would bring “great pride to the people and recognition of their faith — as well as tourism and money,” she told AFP.In the town’s modest St Mary Magdalene church, 72-year-old Blanca Chancafe prayed facing a statue representing the apparition of the child Jesus.Wearing a traditional head covering, Christ is depicted at the centre of rays evoking the Sun, a venerated divinity of the Mochica civilization that once flourished along Peru’s northern coast.Leo XIV “will contribute significantly” to the official recognition of the miracle, said Chancafe, a retired teacher. “We expect a lot from him.”Many hope a papal visit is in store. The elder Puican has no doubt Leo will make the trip to the diocese he once led.“He won’t be long in coming... I hope God will allow me to meet him as pope,” said Puican, a retired merchant of straw hats, an emblematic craft of the town. — AFP",

      • "content": "LEICESTER, May 12 — In a stream near Leicester in central England, six volunteers in waterproof overalls and boots busily reinforced mini wooden structures designed to combat the rising flooding threat. The city, like many others in the UK, has experienced several intense rainfall events in recent years, which have caused significant damage.Alert to climate change, which intensifies these events, authorities are strengthening their defences and turning to solutions more sympathetic with the environment. With their feet firmly planted on the bed of the Saffron Brook, a tributary of the River Soar that runs through Leicester, the volunteers ensured the structures’ wooden bundles were securely anchored. These structures create bends that “change the behaviour of the river” and slow down water in stretches where it currently flows “straight and very fast,” said Dan Scott, who leads the programme at the Trent Rivers Trust, a local group working to protect rivers. He regularly oversees the installation of new facilities.A few months ago, the trust dug a pond on a river near the town of Loughborough and installed dozens of leaky wooden barriers to better protect downstream houses that flooded in the past. These techniques are “complementary to traditional flood defences” such as retention basins and canals that are increasingly under strain, Scott said. They “help to store some of that water upstream so that those traditional flood defences don’t get overwhelmed, and if they do, it’s not as quickly as if these features weren’t in place,” he added. They also help to maintain biodiversity. The trust dug a pond on a river near the town of Loughborough and installed dozens of leaky wooden barriers to better protect downstream houses that flooded in the past. — AFP pic ‘Urgent problem’More than 6.3 million properties are at risk of flooding in the UK, and this figure will rise to more than eight million by 2050, according to a recent government report.“Flooding is a really urgent societal problem,” said Steven Forest, director of the Flood Risk Management Program at the University of Hull.Climate events resulted in UK insurance payouts of more than £400 million (RM2.27 billion) in 2022 and more than £570 million in 2023 and 2024, half of which was related to flooding, according to the Association of British Insurers.Beyond traditional defences, “we need to think about living with water, and we need to think about integrating water within our urban spaces,” Forest added. He cited the Netherlands, which allocates space for rivers to drain during heavy rainfall, and the United States, where vegetation “buffer zones” were created after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.“Straight-jacketing” waterways with various infrastructure is no longer sufficient, Forest said, especially since seven percent of such structures were assessed to be in “poor” or “very poor” condition by the UK Environment Agency in 2022.Overcoming scepticismBut convincing residents and authorities is not always an easy task as it often needs explaining that “just because we’ve not built a concrete solution, that it isn’t going to be as effective,” Scott said.“It’s also about re-educating people in government because it’s easier for them to sell something (to voters) that’s physical and much more prominent within the landscape,” he added.Traditional developments attracted the lion’s share of the £2.6 billion announced by the government in March to fund new flood defence systems over the next two years. Leaky dams which form part of a natural flood management scheme at Beacon Hill near Loughborough. — AFP pic But Scott noted a greater interest in natural flood management over the past five years, with the previous government launching a £25 million programme last year.As a result, Leicester will be able to develop several waterways southeast of the city, and 35 other projects have been selected in England.“It is encouraging that our successful approach to natural flood management measures is continuing to be supported,” Geoff Whittle, a local councillor responsible for the environment, told AFP.Contemplating the fruits of her labour in Saffron, 50-year-old volunteer Lis Gibbs told AFP that “it feels like you can make a difference,” in contrast to climate change in general, which “can feel really overwhelming”. — AFP",

      • "content": "(Reuters) -American Bitcoin, a new bitcoin miner backed by U.S. President Donald Trump's two eldest sons, said on Monday it will list on the Nasdaq via an all-stock merger with Gryphon Digital Mining. Existing shareholders of American Bitcoin, including co-founder Eric Trump, his brother Donald Trump Jr. and crypto miner Hut 8, will retain 98% ownership of the newly formed entity. The move is the latest in a series of crypto ventures by the Trump family, including a meme coin launched in January and World Liberty Financial, a crypto company partly owned by the president. President Trump has pledged to make the U.S. a global leader in the crypto space, and has promised a lighter regulatory touch. However, he has drawn criticism from government ethics experts and political opponents over potential conflicts of interest. Gryphon shares rose more than three-fold in premarket trading, while Hut 8 shares gained 13%. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025. American Bitcoin, which launched in March, will retain Eric Trump as its chief strategy officer. \"Our vision for American Bitcoin is to create the most investable Bitcoin accumulation platform in the market,\" he said in a statement. Over the past few weeks, several corporations have launched new ventures or struck deals to become entities that accumulate bitcoin on their balance sheets. These ventures let investors gain exposure to the crypto token without directly owning it, an approach pioneered by Strategy in 2020, and have soared in popularity among retail traders. \"Buying a stock is a very familiar investment to way more people than buying crypto on a platform,\" Allan Marshall, CEO of e-commerce platform Upexi, said in an interview last week. Since unveiling its plan last month to hold Solana as a treasury asset, Upexi's shares have climbed more than four-fold. (Reporting by Ateev Bhandari and Niket Nishant in Bengaluru)",

      • "content": "BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters): A tariff deal between the United States and China on Monday (May 12) was greeted with scepticism on Chinese social media, while official commentary welcomed the news. Speaking after talks with Chinese officials in Geneva, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two sides had agreed a 90-day pause and tariffs would be reduced by over 100 percentage points to a 10% baseline rate. \"I'm just afraid that Trump might change his mind at any time, after all he is not normal,\" one user called Qijie wrote on China's social media platform Weibo. \"Those Americans, especially that fool Trump, are simply not trustworthy! Beware of their fickleness,\" said another user called Wu. Both posts generated thousands of likes. Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has increased tariffs paid by US importers for goods from China to 145%, in addition to those he imposed on many Chinese goods during his first term and the duties the Biden administration levied. China responded with export curbs on some rare earth elements, vital for US manufacturers of weapons and electronic consumer goods, and by raising tariffs on US goods to 125%. Behind closed doors, Chinese officials had grown alarmed about the economic impact of tariffs and the risk of isolation as China's trading partners started negotiating deals with Washington, according to three officials familiar with Beijing's thinking. As Chinese state media praised the deal, a commentary by public broadcaster CCTV said the meeting between China and the United States in Geneva was \"balanced and beneficial to both sides\". \"The atmosphere of the talks was candid, in-depth and constructive and substantial progress was made and important consensus was reached,\" it said on Tencent's Wechat social media platform. Chinese commentator Hu Xijin, a former editor of state newspaper Global Times, said on his Wechat account the joint statement from China and the United States was historic. China and the United States \"can handle major disputes in an equal and mutually respectful manner,\" he said, adding the result was \"also a victory for international trade rules and due order\". – Reuters",

      • "content": "SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Open Darts Championships ended on high to the cheers of home fans when Shah Alam City Team A bagged the coveted team title as the championships tournament came to an end on Sunday. It was indeed a sweet ending to the tournament which featured many top darters from South-East Asia and Asia in an event held at Ballroom L2, Quayside Mall at Twentyfive 7 from Friday to Sunday. In an event, which had darters displaying superb skill throughout the three-days of competition, and had Japanese and Philippine darters scooping the main titles apart from the men's doubles title, locals had plenty to cheer when Malaysians were in fine form during the team event. And after more than 60 hours of competition, the tournament came to a satisfying end after a team from Malaysia (Shah Alam City A) entered the final displaying fine poise and style and take on Brunei's D Amazing Borneo team in the last stage. In the end, the team from Selangor, roared on by vociferous local supporters, won the final in fine style dispatching the Brunei team 3-0. The Shah Alam side led by team manager Ahmad Niezam Ahmad Noh comprised 2025 Sabah Open champion Tenooth Sivalingam, who had been on good form since day one of the competition, Mohd Faizal Mohamad, Muhammad Gerald Michael and Khamirul Noorbah. The tournament also turned out to be a satisfying end for Tenooth. In the first two days of competition, Tenooth had lost in the in the seimfinals stage of both the singles and doubles competitions. \"I'm very proud pf the boys. All their hard work paid off. We started training for more than a month in preparation for the tournament and their dedication was well worth it as we won the top title,\" said Ahmad Niezam. \"The best part of this victory is that all the team members are home-grown and also are staff of MBSA (Majlis Bandar Shah Alam). So this win is very, very sweet and also it is indeed a victory for Selangor.\" As for D Amazing Borneo, the quartet representing the Brunei team were Shamsuddin Zainuddin, Pg Mohamed Pg Matarsad, Abdul Qahar'ukail Shamsul Ariffin and AK Muhd Hamdi Pg Masshor. Meanwhile, a beaming Selangor Darts Association president C. Pathmanathan said the tournament came to a very satisfying end after seeing a local team and one from Selangor winning the team title. \"Every match in all the competitions was an exciting tussle. It was a fantastic tournament. I believe it will continue to be just as exciting if not better next year,\" said Pathmanathan. \"Selangor have big plans in store for darts. We are also starting our very team league where we can identify male players for the state side. Besides that, we are also identifying top women players for our state with a series of tournament specially for women darters. \"I think it is also important that we have a good pool of players where we can groom them into international class performers in top tournaments.\" Pathmanathan also said the success of the tournament is also due to the dedication on association members and also much support from the Youth and Sports Ministry, Selangor State Government and the other main sponsors. He also gave special thanks to Quayside Mall for being the venue sponsors. \"I take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, the state government and also the sports ministry. The success here was due to their assistance. I thank all my friends and association members who sacrificed so much in order to make this success,\" said Pathmanathan. \"Special thanks to Roger Ko (the General Manager - Quayside Mall) for his help in ensuring the success here. We also hope that the mall continue to support the tournament in future.\" For the record, the Selangor Open is the first WDF ranked event in Malaysia in 2025 which will be followed by Cosmo Malaysia Open 2025 (WDF silver ranked category) on 22-24th August. Besides the best bulls-eye specialists from Malaysia, top darters from Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Japan also took part in the tournament. • "description": "ISTANBUL: The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group, which has been locked in bloody conflict with Turkey for more than four decades, decided to disband and end its armed struggle, group members and Turkish leaders said on Monday.Since the PKK launched its insurgency in 1984 - originally with the aim of creating an independent Kurdish state - the conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, exerted a huge economic burden and fuelled social tensions. The PKK's decision could boost NATO member Turkey's political and economic stability and encourage moves to ease tensions in neighbouring Iraq and also in Syria, where Kurdish forces are allied with U.S. forces. While Ankara welcomed the decision to dissolve, it does not guarantee peace. Rather it paves the way for agreeing a tricky legal framework for securely disarming the PKK, which is designated a terrorist group by Turkey and its Western allies.“The PKK 12th Congress decided to dissolve the PKK’s organizational structure... and end the armed struggle,“ Firat news agency reported it as saying in the closing declaration of a congress held last week in northern Iraq, where the group is based.A PKK official separately confirmed the decision and said all military operations would cease “immediately”, adding weapon handovers were contingent on Ankara’s response and approach to Kurdish rights, and the fate of PKK fighters and leaders.Kurds make up some 20% of Turkey's 86 million population. The PKK held the congress in response to a February call to disband from its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned on an island south of Istanbul since 1999. It said on Monday that he would manage the process. However, it was not clear whether Ankara agreed to Ocalan's continued role, which polls suggest could be unpopular among Turks. Nor were details available on how the disarmament and breakup of the PKK would happen in practice.REGIONAL FALLOUTIt was also unclear how the process would affect the Kurdish YPG militia in Syria, if at all. YPG leads a U.S.-allied force against Islamic State there and is regarded by Turkey as a PKK affiliate.YPG has previously said Ocalan's call did not apply to it, contradicting Ankara's view. It did not immediately comment on the PKK's announcement. The disbanding will give President Tayyip Erdogan a chance to boost development in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, where the insurgency has impaired the regional economy for decades.Turkey will take necessary measures to ensure smooth progress toward a “terror-free” country after the PKK decision, said the presidency’s communications director, Fahrettin Altun. In its statement, the PKK said it “has completed its historic mission,“ which over the years shifted to seeking greater Kurdish rights and limited autonomy in southeast Turkey, rather than an independent state.“The PKK struggle has broken the policy of denial and annihilation of our people and brought the Kurdish issue to a point of solving it through democratic politics,“ it said on the Firat news website, which showed images of senior PKK members attending the congress in fighter fatigues.DOMESTIC POLITICSThe pro-Kurdish DEM Party, Turkey's third largest, played a key role facilitating Ocalan's peace call. Tayip Temel, a deputy party leader, told Reuters the PKK decision was significant for Kurdish people and the Middle East as a whole.“It will also necessitate a major shift in the official state mentality of Turkey,“ he said.Analysts have said Erdogan, who has made repeated efforts in the past to end the conflict, is focused on the domestic political dividends that peace could bring as he looks to extend his two-decade rule beyond 2028 when his term expires. The PKK decision comes amid tumult in Turkish politics: Istanbul's opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Erdogan's main challenger, was jailed in March pending corruption charges in a move that sparked the country's largest protests in a decade. The lira was flat at 38.765 to the dollar after the PKK announcement while Istanbul-listed shares rose 3%.Some welcomed the news in the southeast's largest city Diyarbakir, where distrust of the government among many Kurds had eroded hopes that the peace process would be successful.“It is really important that people do not die anymore, that the Kurdish problem is solved in a more democratic structure,“ said Hasan Huseyin Ceylan, 45, describing the PKK move as very important for both Kurdish and Turkish people. There have been intermittent peace efforts over the years, most notably a ceasefire between 2013 and 2015 that ultimately collapsed.Ending the insurgency would remove a constant flashpoint in Kurdish-run, oil-rich northern Iraq, while facilitating efforts by Syria's new administration to assert greater sway over areas in northern Syria controlled by Kurdish forces.Ocalan's call was prompted by a surprise proposal in October by Devlet Bahceli, Erdogan's ultra-nationalist ally. It had been welcomed by the United States, the European Union and also by Iraq and Iran, which have significant Kurdish populations. (",

      • "content": "LONDON, May 12 — Stanley Tucci is no stranger to hosting a television series, but when asked how it compares to acting, the Oscar nominee is clear: “Hosting is harder because you have to be yourself.“And the reason actors become actors is they probably don’t want to be themselves all the time,” he said, laughing.Known for films like Conclave, Julie & Julia, The Devil Wears Prada and The Hunger Games, Tucci embarks on a culinary journey across Italy in his new show, Tucci in Italy. From sampling traditional knödel in Trentino Alto-Adige to tucking into succulent porchetta in Lazio, the five-episode series sees him talking to chefs, farmers, shopkeepers and everyday Italians about their food and traditions. He describes it as “an exploration of what makes up Italy through the prism of food”.“(Italians) live to eat and everybody else eats to live... You can talk to a cab driver and you can talk to someone of the aristocracy...and they’ll talk about food in the same way,” Tucci said in an interview with Reuters.“And were they to meet, they would talk about food in the same way and they would talk in-depth about it. I don’t know another culture that would do that, where it just breaks down all boundaries.”In the show, Tucci travels to five regions — Tuscany, Lombardy, Trentino Alto-Adige, Lazio and Abruzzo. While not a fan of spice, Tucci said he was willing to try anything: “I sort of did, I think, on this trip. There was lots of offal, which I love.”“When I was watching the episodes again, I was like, there really is a lot of offal in these episodes...but that’s just a part of what Italy is and that’s what they eat.”Tucci, the author of several cookbooks, has Italian origins and has lived as well as visited the country before — including for his previous travel and food show, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.“The more I travel through Italy, the more I see...reminders of people in my childhood,” he said.“You might see somebody who looks like your aunt or your great aunt or your grandfather...and it makes you feel connected to the people that you’ve lost.”Tucci in Italy streams on Disney+ from May 19 and premieres on National Geographic on May 21. — Reuters",

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said in his address at the meeting that workers' well-being is a critical and non-negotiable component of the Malaysian government's agenda. \"I am extremely fortunate to continuously learn from the insights of colleagues in Asean and beyond. Even during this meeting, I have benefited from the experiences of other member economies in managing policies for platform workers, as I prepare to table Malaysia's historic Gig Workers Bill in the second half of this year,\" he said. Sim added that a data-driven approach was essential to understanding job market trends. \"For example, the Malaysian impact report I cited today breaks down the types of jobs affected in different sectors due to new economic trends, enabling the government to design more effective policy interventions,\" he said. Sim was referring to the TalentCorp report titled Impact Study of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital and the Green Economy on the Malaysian Workforce. \"The truth is, our citizen workers will not be replaced by foreigners but by computers and computer software, many of which are produced natively in our country,\" he said. Sim called for a commitment to protecting workers' rights and well-being, urging all economies to uphold this principle even in trade and investment matters. \"No business deal should come at the cost of workers' welfare, and no economy should be penalised for prioritising worker protection,\" he added. Sim is leading the Malaysian delegation to the HRDMM in Jeju, which is being held for the first time in 11 years, with the last meeting taking place in Vietnam in 2014. The meeting, in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Conference, is themed \"Labour Market Sustainability and Future Work\". – Bernama",

      • "content": "BUTTERWORTH, May 12 — Malaysia should seize the opportunity of its Asean Chairmanship in 2025 to expand the market for halal products and penetrate the Asean market, which comprises a population of 600 million, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid. He said that although halal products from Indonesia and Thailand are marketed in Malaysia, local halal products have yet to penetrate the Asean market due to insufficient marketing efforts. “Since 600 million is a realistically large market for Malaysian halal products, the efforts by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) are geared towards expanding the market among Asean countries,” he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Penang Halal Industry Development Council here today, which was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. As such, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Malaysian Halal Industry Development Council chairman, proposed the establishment of an Asean Halal Council and the organisation of an Asean Halal Forum this September. He said the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) will also feature halal products and invite Asean industry players for ‘business matching’ with potential importers. In addition, he said Malaysia is also collaborating to expand the production of halal gelatine-which currently has only one producer in the country-for both Asean and international markets, as existing gelatine products lack the proper standards required for other halal products. “This includes sectors such as medicine, cosmetics, and others, because we tend to focus only on the food and beverage (F&B) service sector, when in fact, other sectors hold vast market potential and should be further developed,” he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid noted that Malaysia possesses a comprehensive halal ecosystem, including halal certification recognised by 92 foreign halal certification bodies from 48 countries. At the same time, he congratulated Penang for becoming the first state in Malaysia to establish a Halal Industry Development Council. Malaysia continues to lead the global halal industry, recording exports valued at RM61.79 billion in 2024, a 15 per cent increase from 2023, and maintaining the number one position in the Global Islamic Economy Index for ten consecutive years. — Bernama",

      • "content": "MADRID (Reuters) - Former Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso is set to become the next Real Madrid manager on a three-year deal when he leaves Bayer Leverkusen after this season, Spanish media reported on Monday. Alonso, 43, is expected to replace current Real boss Carlo Ancelotti, who is being lined up for the vacant Brazil job ahead of the 2026 World Cup, soccer sources told Reuters. Despite the Italian having a year remaining on his contract, Real's underwhelming season and his desire to coach Brazil have led to a mutual agreement to part ways, the sources added. Alonso, who said earlier this month that he was leaving Leverkusen after guiding them to the double last term, will join Real before the inaugural Club World Cup in the United States from June 14 to July 14, multiple media reports said. Alonso, who also played for Liverpool and Bayern Munich, last season steered Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, ending the Bavarians' 11-year domination, and they also won the German Cup and German Super Cup. Reports of Ancelotti's likely departure come as no surprise after Real's 4-3 defeat at Barcelona in a thrilling 'El Clasico' on Sunday left his side on the brink of a trophyless season. The 65-year-old Italian, who returned for a second stint at Real in June 2021, led the Spanish giants to two Champions League and LaLiga doubles, the latest of which came last season. He is the most successful manager in the club's history with a total of 15 trophies and the first coach to claim titles in Europe's top five leagues. However, this season Real were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal and allowed Barca to fight back and win 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final. Second-placed Real are seven points adrift of Barcelona, who could secure the league title on Wednesday without kicking a ball if Real fail to win at home to Mallorca. Regardless of Real's result, a Barca victory in the city derby away to Espanyol on Thursday would clinch the title. An official announcement regarding a managerial change is expected before Real's last game of the season at home to Real Sociedad on May 25. Ancelotti is expected to receive a fitting farewell, recognising his four highly successful years with the club. (Reporting by Fernando Kallas; Editing by Ken Ferris)",

Their good head-to-head record (7-4) should give them the edge, barring any upsets,\" said Razif. The Malaysians open their campaign against French pair Julien Maio-William Villeger in the first round.Meanwhile, Wei Chong-Kai Wun, winners of the Indonesia Masters in January, face world No. 35 Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri in an all-Malaysian clash.Haikal, who crashed out in the first round of the Taiwan Open last week on his return from a thigh injury, admitted it won't be easy.\"It's always frustrating playing against teammates because we know each other's game so well,\" said Haikal. \"We just have to do our best. Wei Chong-Kai Wun are in good form, and they beat us at the Malaysia Masters last year — our only previous meeting.\"The other Malaysian pairs in the main draw are world No. 21 Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong (No. 27), Low Hang Yi-Ng Eng Cheong (No. 42) and world junior champions Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing (No. 60).© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd",

      • "content": "KUALA LUMPUR: More than 30,000 devotees and visitors, including tourists, gathered at the Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple in Brickfields today in a grand Wesak Day celebration that also marked the temple's 130th anniversary. This year's celebration stood out not just for its scale, but also for a renewed focus on charitable initiatives, including an organ donation drive under the Silent Mentor programme, in addition to the annual blood donation campaign.Buddhist Maha Vihara honorary secretary Tilak Leslie said the Silent Mentor programme allowed individuals to donate their bodies after death for medical research and education, in collaboration with universities, teaching hospitals and medical experts.\"As of now, we have 30 pledged deceased donors whose bodies are preserved for educational purposes,\" he said, adding that the registration process was simple and open to all.Founded in 1894 by the Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society, the Maha Vihara Temple held its first Wesak Day celebration in 1895, following the arrival of two Sri Lankan monks.Wesak Day, observed on the full moon in May, commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, all of which were believed to have occurred on the same lunar date.\"This is the most sacred day for Buddhists,\" Tilak said.\"It commemorates the three most significant milestones in the Buddha's life, and we honour it with spiritual observances and acts of compassion.\"This morning's celebrations began with the raising of the Buddhist flag at 8am by Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Malaysia M.I. Mohamed Rizvi and chief high priest Datuk K. Sri Dhammaratana, followed by prayers, singing of hymns, the lighting of lotus oil lamps and the burning of incense. Devotees then queued to receive blessings, holy water and a sacred yellow string from monks. One of the key highlights of the evening was the Wesak float procession that began at 6.30pm, which would cover a 12km route through the heart of Kuala Lumpur, before returning to the temple around 10.30pm.Between 20 to 25 elaborately decorated floats, depicting the life and teachings of the Buddha, would be taking part in the parade. In a notable show of interfaith unity, the Church of Our Lady of Fatima nearby contributed to the celebration by offering food to the monks and distributing meals to devotees.\"We're deeply humbled by their generosity,\" Tilak said. \"They've also planned to provide more food tomorrow during the lunch hour. It's a beautiful example of unity and shared compassion.\"When asked about the crowd, Tilak described the response as \"overwhelming\", with at least 30,000 people recorded by midday.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd",

Coming into the Vatican's large audience hall, he was greeted with applause from reporters. The pope spoke mainly in Italian, but opened with a joke in English about the clapping.“Thank you for this wonderful reception,“ said Leo. “They say that when they clap at the beginning, it doesn’t matter much. If you’re still awake at the end and still want to applaud, thank you very much.”VISIT TO CHICAGO NOT PLANNEDAfter his address, Leo walked off the stage to greet journalists in the audience, and engaged in banter with a few of them. The pope indicated he would continue with Francis' plan to take a trip to Turkey this year to celebrate the 1,700th anniversary of an early Church council, held in Nicaea, now the modern day town of Iznik. But when an American reporter asked the pope, born in Chicago, if he would be returning for a visit home soon, Leo responded: “I don’t think so.”Leo showed signs that he was not yet used to the rhythms and practices of being pope. At one point, he asked an aide if it was he or an usher who was supposed to give rosary beads to people after greeting them.People meeting the pope are often given a small set of rosary beads blessed by the pontiff, usually distributed by a papal attendant. One reporter also asked the pope, who is a tennis player, if he would like to play against Andre Agassi. Leo responded, “just don’t bring Sinner,“ making a Catholic pun about the last name of Italian champion Jannik Sinner.",

The pope indicated he would continue with Francis' plan to take a trip to Turkey this year to celebrate the 1,700th anniversary of an early Church council, held in Nicaea, now the modern day town of Iznik. But when an American reporter asked the pope, born in Chicago, if he would be returning for a visit home soon, Leo responded: “I don’t think so.” Leo showed signs that he was not yet used to the rhythms and practices of being pope. At one point, he asked an aide if it was he or an usher who was supposed to give rosary beads to people after greeting them. People meeting the pope are often given a small set of rosary beads blessed by the pontiff, usually distributed by a papal attendant. One reporter also asked the pope, who is a tennis player, if he would like to play against Andre Agassi. Leo responded, “just don’t bring Sinner,“ making a Catholic pun about the last name of Italian champion Jannik Sinner.",

      • "description": "Celebrity couple Hong Ling and Nick Teo revealed on Mothers Day that they recently suffered a miscarriage. Read full story",
      • "content": "It may have been a day of carnations and celebratory lunches for many families, but for Singaporean celebrity couple Hong Ling and Nick Teo, Mothers Day was a sombre occasion. In an Instagram post made by Hong on May 11, the couple revealed that they recently suffered a miscarriage. The post was accompanied by a video filmed during happier times – of Hong, 30, surprising her actor-husband Teo, 35, with news of her pregnancy. The couple married in December 2023. The video, rendered in black and white, showed them in a loving embrace and Teo shedding tears of joy after he saw Hong’s positive pregnancy test result. The couple happily showed the test result, and a romper for a newborn which said “Fresh from Heaven”, to their cats. There was also a close-up of an ultrasound scan, which was dated Feb 11. Hong did not reveal when she suffered the miscarriage. The news came as a double blow to the actress, who had recently lost her Thai mother Kaewsoda Kesorn to cancer on Feb 23. Kaewsoda was 52. The Your World In Mine (2022) star said she and Teo kept the news secret for some time as they were afraid of sharing their loss, and that made them feel even lonelier. She wrote: “As Mother’s Day approaches, my heart feels an unbearable ache. Never in my darkest dreams did I imagine experiencing such immense pain, losing both my beloved mum and my precious baby earlier this year. “These nights are difficult, (I) often end up crying myself to sleep. My faith was shaken, I was overwhelmed by grief. We let fear stop us from sharing and carried the loss in silence. Every conversation about children pierced through our hearts. Behind forced smiles, it was the loneliest thing we have ever done.” Hong, who is a Christian, added that though she “still can’t see the light”, her faith would tide her through this challenging period. The couple’s celebrity friends, such as Teo’s co-stars in the recent hit series Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story (2025), left comments encouraging them and expressing their condolences. Zhang Zetong wrote: “Sorry for what you two have been going through.” Chantalle Ng added: “I didnt know you were going through so much, please take care.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network",
