      • "content": "The Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa (Zaoga) has filed an urgent chamber application with the High Court seeking to halt the eviction and demolition of the Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (Zegu) in Bindura, following a default judgment that awarded the land to gold miner Mr Charles Chakumba. The High Court recently ruled in favour of Mr Chakumba after Zaoga and its legal representatives failed to attend a pre-trial conference. Justice Joseph Musakwa granted a default order compelling the church to vacate the premises to allow Chakumba to freely conduct his mining operations on claims he was allocated at Barasse Farm in 1994 by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development. Chakumba, represented by lawyer Mr Vusani Bangidza of Tavenhave and Machingauta Legal Practitioners, argued that his gold mining claims—numbered 22441 and 22442—have long-standing legal recognition. He further asserted that Zaoga's presence on the site, where it built its multimillion-dollar university in 2010, has obstructed his right to mine. In response, Zaoga, through its lawyers Debwe and Partners, filed an urgent application this week seeking to stay the execution of the judgment pending the outcome of a rescission application. The church said its failure to appear at the pre-trial conference was due to a clerical error by its legal secretary, who misfiled the notice and incorrectly recorded the date as March 16 instead of March 3. \"The said judgment was obtained in default at the pre-trial conference as a result of a genuine mistake,\" the church argued in its court filing. Zaoga claimed it only learned of the court order on March 7 after reading about it in The Herald newspaper. The church now seeks an interim interdict to prevent Mr Chakumba from evicting Zegu's students and staff, or demolishing the university infrastructure, until the matter is fully adjudicated. Chakumba, who initiated legal action in 2015, insists that Zaoga has been illegally occupying the land, despite being cautioned to vacate. He says the Ministry of Mines confirmed him as the legitimate holder of the mining claims and accused the church of blocking him from exercising his rights. Zaoga, however, argues that the land was lawfully allocated to it by the Bindura Municipality in 2008, in consultation with the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing. The church maintains that the miner's case should be dismissed on the grounds that it was filed beyond the three-year statutory period stipulated under the Prescription Act. \"Plaintiff became aware of Zegu's occupation of the land in February 2010. His claim arose then, but the summons were only served in August 2015—well beyond the three-year limit,\" the church contended. As the legal battle intensifies, the fate of Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University, a flagship educational institution named after Zaoga's late founder, hangs in the balance. The case has ignited a broader debate about conflicting land rights between public infrastructure projects and pre-existing mineral claims.",

      • "content": "Acclaimed Gweru-based human rights lawyer Brian Dube has been appointed to the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) electoral committee, bringing crucial legal expertise to the administration of the country's football affairs. In a letter dated April 16, Zifa president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed the appointment, which is effective from March 28, 2025, and will run for four years. The term is subject to renewal or review depending on performance, organisational needs, and compliance with Zifa statutes. \"It is with great pleasure that we inform you of your appointment to the electoral committee of the Zimbabwe Football Association effective March 28, 2025, according to Article 59 of the Zifa statutes of October 2024,\" Magwizi stated in the letter. He further highlighted that Dube's appointment reflects his \"expertise, dedication and contributions to the development of football in Zimbabwe.\" As part of the Zifa electoral committee, Dube's key duties will include organising and supervising electoral processes, ensuring compliance with the Zifa statutes and electoral code, and upholding transparency and fairness in the association's election procedures. Dube, a respected legal mind and former Member of Parliament, accepted the role in a letter dated May 7. \"I, Dube Brian, acknowledge receipt of this appointment letter and accept the role of electoral committee under the terms outlined,\" he wrote. His inclusion in the committee is seen as a strategic move by Zifa to restore credibility and integrity to its electoral systems following years of criticism over internal governance and procedural inconsistencies. Zifa is currently undergoing a major restructuring process aimed at aligning its operations with both local legal frameworks and international football standards, particularly those of CAF and FIFA.",

      • "content": "The Government of Zimbabwe has launched the Presidential Emergency Medical Scheme in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province, in a major effort to improve healthcare delivery in rural communities. The official launch took place on May 17, 2025, at St James Zongoro High School in Ward 24, with the Minister of Defence, Honourable Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, officiating as guest of honour. The scheme is designed to address the growing healthcare needs of underserved populations, particularly in remote areas. Its primary objectives include improving health outcomes, reducing mortality rates, and ensuring broader access to essential medical services. As part of the launch activities, residents benefited from free health screenings, consultations with medical professionals, and educational workshops focused on preventive health. Speaking at the event, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri underscored the government's unwavering commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, especially in rural settings. She highlighted that access to medical care is a fundamental right and emphasized that the Second Republic, under President Emmerson Mnangagwa's leadership, remains dedicated to bridging the healthcare gap between urban and rural communities. In addition to the health initiative, the government used the occasion to tackle other pressing social issues. The Defence Minister issued a strong warning against drug abuse, declaring that individuals involved in drug cartels could face up to 50 years in prison. She also revealed that a new statutory instrument would soon be introduced to regulate public alcohol consumption, part of a broader anti-drug campaign. The launch event also included a food distribution programme targeting vulnerable groups. A total of 1,000 bags of mealie meal were handed out to elderly residents of Mutasa, alongside 2,000 bags of rice and 100 food hampers, courtesy of Discovery Ambulance Services. The Presidential Emergency Medical Scheme is a key component of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and is aligned with Vision 2030, Zimbabwe's long-term goal of achieving an upper middle-income economy. By expanding access to quality healthcare and addressing socio-economic challenges, the government aims to uplift communities and build a healthier, more resilient nation.",

      • "content": "Former SAFA media officer Namhla Mphelo has responded to allegations claiming that she leaked information regarding a R10 million payment made to the association's president, Danny Jordaan. Mphelo, who was recently dismissed for unauthorised access to critical information and sharing it, has denied these accusations. She has filed a case against the association with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration [CCMA] over what she describes as an unfair dismissal. After working for SAFA for 11 years, Mphelo is seeking to regain her position. She was suspended in February following accusations of dishonesty and for allegedly accessing and leaking sensitive information about the R10 million payment, which was said to be unauthorised by SAFA's National Executive Committee [NEC]. During her disciplinary hearing, she denied the allegations but was ultimately fired on April 7. Her case is set to be heard on May 20, 2025. \"The truth is, I accessed the system; it was within my rights,\" Mphelo told MSW. \"I was a team manager at the time, [with the] Under 17 girls who went to Gabon for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. \"So, I did access the system, so that part is very true. The unauthorised part is not true, and the sharing with an NEC member is not true. I had the right in my means as the media officer to be looking into things that I did look into.\" She added that the assumption was that she was the person who had access and then took a screenshot of the transaction and passed it on. \"I think it was sensitive information that didn't sit comfortably with the president that was shared on a WhatsApp group. But it did not come from me. I want to emphasise that part. \"Even the NEC member who said that he sent the staff admitted to the CEO before I went for DC and that information was disregarded going into my DC.\" She argued that the hearing was unfair because she had requested policies and communication strategies that would serve as the criteria for determining whether her actions were inappropriate. However, she did not receive any documentation in response to her requests. In a statement, SAFA dismissed the allegations, labelling them as malicious and mischievous. The association further said \"this latest smear\" emanates from someone who accessed the SAFA financial system illegally, misinterpreted the reports they generated, and leaked them to third parties in a bid to generate this false narrative. \"The report that was obtained illegally relates to all payments made to the President since 2007. \"It covers a period of 18 years during which time Dr Danny Jordaan held various positions in SAFA as CEO until 2008, CEO of the World Cup Bid up until 2006, and CEO of the FIFA World Cup from 2006 until 2011. \"It also includes SAFA meeting allowances and honorariums, which were paid to all NEC members over a period exceeding 13 years.\"",

      • "content": "Zimbabweans consumed a staggering 2.66 million hectolitres of lager beer in 2024, marking a notable increase from previous years, according to newly released figures from Delta Corporation, the country's leading beverage manufacturer. The record-breaking consumption underscores a growing national appetite for lager, especially among younger, urban drinkers. Delta attributes the surge in demand to its expanded production capacity and the establishment of more efficient distribution networks, which have allowed the company to maintain a consistent beer supply across all provinces. Among the wide array of lager brands produced by Delta, Carling Black Label led the charge, selling over one million hectolitres and securing its position as the most popular lager in the country. The brand's dominant performance highlights shifting consumer preferences and deepening brand loyalty in a competitive market. Industry experts say the rise in beer consumption mirrors broader socio-economic changes in Zimbabwe. These include marginal improvements in disposable incomes within certain urban segments and a cultural shift toward social drinking as a lifestyle trend. \"We are seeing a lifestyle change, especially in urban areas, where lager is becoming the beverage of choice,\" noted one market analyst. \"It's no longer just about the drink - it's part of the social identity for many young adults.\" In response to this growing demand, Delta Corporation has pledged continued investment in brewing infrastructure and product development. The company has also hinted at plans to diversify its product offerings to retain market dominance and respond to evolving consumer tastes. With beer consumption on the rise and competition intensifying, Delta's proactive approach suggests the country's beverage industry is poised for further growth in the coming years.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwean martial arts legend Sensei Mugove Muhambi, a veteran karateka who represented the country on numerous international platforms, has died following a fatal road traffic accident along Borrowdale Road in Harare early this morning. The tragic incident occurred near Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks and has been confirmed by the Zimbabwe National Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, which described Muhambi's passing as a profound loss to the local sporting fraternity. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash was caused by a speeding Honda Fit that veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a Toyota GD6. \"This happened in the morning, and I think the accident was caused by that Honda Fit which went into the oncoming lane where the GD6 was,\" an eyewitness at the scene recounted. The Convergence Community Emergency Response Team also attended the scene. Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Mr Webster Jaricha urged motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to avoid such tragedies. \"As the Emergency Response Team of Zimbabwe, we want to urge those who are driving to drive carefully to prevent accidents,\" Jaricha said. National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and reiterated the importance of road safety, particularly during the early hours when many motorists are commuting. \"This is a call for all the relevant stakeholders to further exercise caution when driving, especially in the early hours of any day. It is a clear reminder that driving carefully is essential to saving lives,\" said Commissioner Nyathi. The government, in collaboration with private sector partners, continues to intensify road safety awareness campaigns amid growing concerns over increasing road traffic accidents, most of which are attributed to human error. Sensei Muhambi was widely respected for his contributions to martial arts in Zimbabwe and beyond. His untimely death has sent shockwaves across the sports community, with tributes pouring in from fellow athletes, students, and fans.",

      • "content": "The widow of national hero and iconic ZIPRA commander, Rodgers Alfred Nikita Mangena, Mrs Sikhubekiso Madeya Mangena, was laid to rest on Thursday at the Nkulumane Provincial Heroes Acre following her death last Sunday. Mrs Mangena was honoured with liberation war heroine status by the Government of Zimbabwe in recognition of her significant yet often unsung contributions to the country's liberation struggle. She played a critical role in mobilising resources that sustained the armed resistance against colonial rule. During the burial ceremony, Zanu PF Secretary General, Obert Mpofu, paid tribute to the late heroine, describing her as a steadfast pillar of support for liberation fighters during the protracted war for independence. \"Mrs Mangena was one of the women who carried the struggle forward by supporting soldiers. She is one of the women who were dedicated to supporting the liberation struggle,\" said Mpofu. Her dedication was echoed by Zanu PF Bulawayo Provincial Chairman, Jabulani Sibanda, who urged Zimbabweans to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the Mangena family. \"Let us take a leaf from the Mangenas. Their dedication to the struggle is something that should be emulated,\" said Sibanda. Speaking at the ceremony, Lotshe Mangena, the couple's only surviving child, expressed gratitude to the government for acknowledging his mother's role in the struggle. \"I want to thank the government for granting my mother this status. It goes to show that the role played by women during the liberation struggle is also recognised,\" he said. Mrs Mangena is survived by her son Lotshe and nine grandchildren. Her burial not only honoured her personal sacrifices but also served as a reminder of the many unsung women whose efforts contributed to Zimbabwe's independence.",

      • "content": "PROF WELSHMAN NCUBE SHOULD FORGET HIS LOSING COURT LITIGATION AGAINST SENATOR TSHABANGU AND SEEK A POLITICAL SETTLEMENT For Prof Welshman Ncube when it rains, it pours. The Supreme Court this week set aside this ], which he had been granted against Senator Sengezo Tshabangu by Justice Neville Wamambo on 8 January 2025. This was after Senator Tshabangu and the Speaker of the National Assembly had appealed the judgment at the Supreme Court. As the Supreme Court hearing started on Thursday, 15 May 20225, Advocate Method Ndlovu raised a point in limine, seeking to oust the Supreme Court from hearing the matter, by ill-advisedly challenging its jurisdiction and arguing that the matter was constitutional; and that it should have been taken to the Constitutional Court. Before Advocate could gather himself to make his point in limine, the Court asked him to point to it the \"the disposition of the court a quo\" in the judgment, namely, the operational part of the order. Advocate Ndlovu was left in sixes and sevens. Justice Wamambo's judgment granted to Prof Ncube against Senator Tshabangu on 8 January 2025 did not have an operation order. Advocate Luis Uriri, who represented Senator Tshabangu at the Supreme Court hearing on Thursday, characterised Justice Wamambo's judgment as \"an essay\". This is because it had no legal import or consequence. Yet, parenthetically, this is precisely the judgment that Prof Ncube used to hurriedly, with shocking political immaturity, and illegally ‘suspend' Tshabangu on 9 January 2025 with an unmistakable intention to expel him; which he did on 19 February 2025, after he orchestrated a kangaroo hearing on 7 February 2025, whose proceedings and decision were set aside by the High Court on 11 April 2025 in this . This judgment also ended Prof Ncube's claim to the presidency of Triple C, as it declared that his term of office had expired on 27 May 2024 and that he was holding office unlawfully. There's just no way Prof Ncube is going to wriggle out of this judgment, in court. No way. He's placed himself in a cul-de-sac. His claim to be Acting President of CCC is now water under the bridge. Because the judgment that Prof Ncube had been granted on 8 January 2025 had no operational order, the Supreme Court stopped Advocated Ndlovu dead in his tracks, from arguing his point in limine and proceeded to make this Order (see attachment): 1. The matters SC24/25 and SC26/25 be and are hereby struck off the roll with no order as to costs. 2. In the exercise of the court's review powers in terms of section 25(2) of the Supreme Court Act [Chapter 7;13] the proceedings in HCH 5605/24 be and are hereby set aside. 3. The matter is hereby remitted to the court a quo for a hearing . For ease of reference, section 25(2) of the Supreme Court Act provides as follows: 25 Review powers (1) Subject to this section, the Supreme Court and every judge of the Supreme Court shall have the same power, jurisdiction and authority as are vested in the High Court and judges of the High Court, respectively, to review the proceedings and decisions of inferior courts of justice, tribunals and administrative authorities. (2) The power, jurisdiction and authority conferred by subsection (1) may be exercised whenever it comes to the notice of the Supreme Court or a judge of the Supreme Court that an irregularity has occurred in any proceedings or in the making of any decision notwithstanding that such proceedings are, or such decision is, not the subject of an appeal or application to the Supreme Court. Supreme COMMENT There are three notable points about the order the Supreme Court granted on Thursday: Firstly, the fact that the Supreme Court struck off the roll the appeals by Senator Tshabangu and the Speaker with no order as to costs stood to reason, because there was no order to appeal. Secondly, it is notable that the Supreme Court, ex mero motu, invoked its powers under section 25(2) of the Supreme Court Act (Chapter 7:13) to set aside the entire proceedings in HCH 5605/24, whose judgment had been granted to Prof Ncube. In effect, Prof Ncube went into the Supreme Court hearing on Thursday with a judgment he was granted by Justice Wamambo on 8 January 2025 in his pockets, only to lose that judgment within 10 minutes of the hearing; and left the court with empty pockets. This was a crushing loss for Prof Ncube. There's no way Advocate Ndlovu can minimise the loss by spinning it around, as he hopelessly attempts to do on the attached video. Senator Tshabangu won, and won big. Even fools can see that. Thirdly, and this must be devastating for Prof Ncube, that the Supreme Court remitted the record of the matter, whose proceedings it set aside, to the court a quo for a hearing de novo before a different judge; cannot be good news to him because the case has now been overtaken by events. Case Number HCH 5605/24 won by Prof Ncube on 8 January 2025, whose judgment was set aside by the Supreme Court on Thursday, has been overtaken by Case Number HCH 830/25 won by Senator Tshabangu on 11 April 2025. When Prof Ncube was granted the judgment in HCH 5605/24 on 8 January 2025, he was styling himself - and seen by some CCC MPs - as the Acting President of CCC; but all that changed when the High Court nullified his claim to CCC's presidency on 11 April 2025, as it declared that his term of office as Acting President of CCC expired on 27 May 2024, and that he was holding office unlawfully. Put simply, he was not the Acting President of CCC. So, last Thursday on 15 May 2025, when the Supreme Court set aside the judgment that Prof Ncube had won on 8 January 2025 in Case Number HCH 5605/24, Prof Ncube was by law no longer the Acting President of CCC; he was just an ordinary member of CCC; which he is as you read this. There's a lesson here for Prof Ncube. As a professor of law, and someone who has been active in politics at various senior levels since 1999, he has enough knowledge and the experience to know only too well that litigating politics in court is unwise, crazy business. Politically matters are best handled politically, not in court. It was foolhardy for Prof Ncube to take Senator Tshabangu to court in the first place. The rest is history. Meanwhile, it would be wise of prof Ncube to eat humble pie and explore political ways through which he and Senator Tshabangu might find each other, politically. After all, as the art of the possible, politics is only possible through trade-offs to reach a win-win compromise!",

      • "content": "Trish Mukwazotrishmukwazo515@gmail.comWOMEN have long expressed concerns about the male-dominated landscape of leadership citing a persistent lack of equal opportunities compared to their male counterparts. This imbalance is not only evident in the numbers but also in the systemic barriers and biases that prevent women from reaching their full potential. This emerged during a leadership training for women including the youths from Bulawayo where they received training on effective leadership skills from the Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (WALPE) working in collaboration with the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA).WALPE is a women’s political empowerment and leadership academy set up to advance knowledge and deepen the capacity of women who want to successfully run for public elected positions. It seeks to provide women with technical and practical skills that empower them to run for public office. The academy is driven by the need to challenge the status quo through creating platforms and opportunities for women to get into decision making and leadership positions.Women and the youth were educated on what leadership roles require including concepts like ubuntu/unhu, climate change effects, grooming and public speaking among others. WALPE’S Deputy Director Ms Jessie Chihora highlighted that the training seeks to equip women with necessary skills since they make up a significant part of the country’s population. One of the youths who were present Ms Zinhle Ndlovu (24) said the problem that the girl child faces is lack of support from family as they often think the boy child is more capable.“Society still has the notion that girls cannot take up leadership roles. As the girl child sometimes we face challenges like sexual harassment when we try to run for leadership roles, we end up in a serious dilemma,” she said. She said the training is going to assist them in navigating those challenges.Another participant Ms Daphne Tengende (29) said women find themselves in a space with limited resources supporting women in leadership roles. She said society often questions what value women bring, making it challenging without necessary resources. She said the key to addressing this problem is the need for budgets specifically allocated for women in leadership positions at community, district, provincial and national levels.“Another challenge is the societal perception that leadership is a male domain. Women seeking leadership positions such as in politics are often labeled aggressive or unfeminine. To address this, we need a mindset shift educating society that women’s leadership is about having a voice that needs to be heard, not about competing with men,” said Ms Tengende.Ms Tengende highlighted the importance of women’s representation in leadership positions and the need for advocacy and awareness to empower them.“A number of women and youth have potential and skills but lack awareness and guidance to pursue leadership roles. They often wait for someone to encourage them,” she added. She further emphasised the significance of leadership training in empowering women, fostering networks and laying the groundwork of future leaders. • "content": "A controversial US$138 million contract awarded to Helcraw Electrical Projects, a company owned by Zanu PF legislator Farai Jere, for the development of Harare's water infrastructure has been significantly reduced to US$30 million following public backlash and scrutiny. The deal, originally part of a US$1.5 billion urban infrastructure initiative, was awarded without a public tender by the Ministry of Local Government. Helcraw, in partnership with Chinese firm Hangzhou Laison Technology, was mandated to carry out a wide range of works to modernise the capital's struggling water reticulation system. However, the transaction was met with strong resistance from residents and civil society organisations, who questioned the legality of the procurement process and raised concerns about transparency and the city's capacity to fund such a massive project. Amid the uproar, authorities have now scaled down the project, limiting Helcraw's role to supplying smart water meters - an area where the company has previously demonstrated competence. A source close to the developments, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the decision to trim the contract stemmed from funding constraints and a reassessment of priorities. \"The scope of the project was reduced from US$138 million to US$30 million after authorities decided that some of the activities listed were not very important in light of limited funding,\" the source said. \"The primary reason was to allow Helcraw to focus only on the supply of smart meters, which is their core area of expertise.\" The initial agreement had included several components beyond metering, such as rehabilitating the Alex pump station, upgrading Darwendale, replacing 100 kilometres of old piping, and constructing a US$20 million solar power plant. But questions over Helcraw's capacity to deliver on all fronts, coupled with concerns about the financial model and value for money, led to the drastic restructuring of the deal. When contacted in January, Jere insisted the contract had been awarded based on the company's proven performance in the utilities sector, and not because of his affiliation with the ruling party. \"It has nothing to do with my role as a legislator,\" Jere said at the time. \"It was a matter of me proposing and being able to proffer solutions. We have notable achievements. We have done electricity meters. We have done water meters in Karoi. We are the ones who proposed this to Zinwa.\" Despite his defence, critics have maintained that the process lacked transparency. Harare Residents Trust director Precious Shumba described the deal as opaque and politically influenced. \"There is a lack of transparency and accountability in the contracting of Helcraw. In the opinion of the Harare Residents Trust, Helcraw was imposed on the City of Harare by the national government with the complicity of council officials and a few policymakers at Town House,\" Shumba said. \"With the lack of transparency in the deal, we strongly suspect that this is consistent with the government's push for the privatisation of public services.\" At the time of going to print, questions sent to Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, and acting Town Clerk Phakamile Mabhena Moyo had not been responded to. Jere also did not provide fresh comments. Helcraw's Chinese partner, Hangzhou Laison Technology, is said to have presented proof of funding for the initial project. However, the revised contract suggests that only limited aspects of the original proposal will now be pursued - raising questions about the future of Harare's long-overdue water infrastructure overhaul and the city's capacity to address its worsening service delivery crisis.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu PF party appears to be revisiting the script of colonial Rhodesia's failed 1978 internal settlement as it courts Sengezo Tshabangu's faction of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), in a political manoeuvre reminiscent of Ian Smith's ill-fated alliance with moderate black leaders. The 1978 agreement between Smith and African leaders like Bishop Abel Muzorewa, Chief Jeremiah Chirau, and Ndabaningi Sithole was a desperate attempt to placate a restless black population and the international community, without addressing core grievances such as land redistribution and universal suffrage. Muzorewa's brief stint as Prime Minister did little to quell the liberation struggle, as major nationalist forces - Robert Mugabe's ZANU and Joshua Nkomo's ZAPU - were excluded from the deal. Despite Smith's hopes that integrating moderate Africans into government would end sanctions and military hostilities, his internal settlement failed dismally. The war raged on, sanctions remained, and regional leaders like Kenneth Kaunda, Samora Machel, and Julius Nyerere insisted that only genuine negotiations including Mugabe and Nkomo would resolve the conflict. They were proven right when the Lancaster House Conference in 1979 ultimately ushered in Zimbabwe's independence the following year. Now, 45 years after Independence, parallels are being drawn between Smith's doomed strategy and the current overtures by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's Zanu PF to engage Tshabangu's CCC faction - a group many view as politically neutered proxies. Tshabangu, who controversially declared himself CCC's interim secretary-general after seizing control of the opposition following the disputed 2023 elections, is reported to have approached Zanu PF with a proposal for a coalition government that would postpone the next general elections by two years. The Standard newspaper revealed this week that Tshabangu's proposal has been met with enthusiasm by the ruling party. Zanu PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa praised the idea as \"very noble,\" adding that it was important to \"build rapport and understanding... so that we incorporate the ideas of the Zimbabwe we want.\" Critics, however, argue that this is a thinly veiled strategy to entrench Zanu PF's rule and lay the groundwork for extending Mnangagwa's presidency beyond 2028, when his second term is constitutionally due to end. Political analysts warn that the move risks further alienating the electorate and undermining the legitimacy of governance structures in Zimbabwe. \"Tshabangu's alignment with Zanu PF echoes the hollow compromise between Smith and Muzorewa. It was a ruse then, and it's a ruse now,\" one observer noted. \"It failed to stop the war in 1978, and this political marriage of convenience will fail to solve Zimbabwe's current crisis.\" Many Zimbabweans see the latest developments as a betrayal of democratic principles, with concerns mounting that the ruling elite is more focused on political survival than on meaningful reforms and national healing. As Mnangagwa's camp floats constitutional amendments and coalition talks with a compromised opposition, history warns that such strategies - designed to neutralise rather than accommodate genuine opposition voices - are not only unsustainable but potentially combustible. The ghosts of Muzorewa's short-lived government loom large. And just like Smith, Mnangagwa may find that co-opting pliable figures will not resolve the deep-rooted political and economic challenges facing Zimbabwe today.",

      • "content": "President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, has called on newly commissioned officers from the Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) to fiercely protect the nation's independence and the solidarity shared across the Southern African region. Speaking at the 40th Regular Officer Cadet Commissioning Parade held at the academy in Gweru, President Mnangagwa emphasized the crucial role that peace and security play in driving sustainable development both within Zimbabwe and across its borders. He reminded the graduating cadets of the sacrifices made by liberation war heroes, urging them to uphold their legacy by remaining patriotic, professional, and loyal to the nation. \"It is my expectation that institutions such as the Zimbabwe Military Academy continue to produce well-rounded officers who honour and cherish the supreme sacrifice of our fallen heroes,\" said President Mnangagwa. The President also commended the increasing participation of women in the cadet programme, describing it as a positive step toward inclusive national development and peace-building efforts. In his address, Mnangagwa urged the ZMA to keep pace with global technological advancements by incorporating modern innovations into its training curriculum, ensuring that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) remains capable and adaptive in an evolving security landscape. The commissioning parade marks a key milestone in the professional development of the ZDF, which continues to play a central role in safeguarding national sovereignty and contributing to regional peacekeeping efforts.",

      • "content": "In a proactive move to address escalating concerns within Zimbabwe's public healthcare system, the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, on Friday visited Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals to engage directly with frontline medical personnel on key issues affecting their welfare and service delivery. The visit follows widespread reports of dissatisfaction among healthcare workers over poor remuneration, inadequate transport and accommodation provisions, and challenging working conditions. During a candid meeting with nurses, doctors, and hospital administrators, healthcare workers laid bare their grievances, calling on the government to urgently intervene and improve their living and working conditions. \"We have a lot of issues we want the government to address. We are struggling to feed our children,\" said one nurse. \"We are patriotic Zimbabweans, which is why we continue to serve here, but we want our working conditions to be improved. We thank the minister for taking time to come and listen to us, and we hope, as he promised, these issues will be addressed.\" Dr Mombeshora acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns raised and affirmed the government's commitment to constructive engagement and policy-based solutions. \"This meeting was necessitated by the reports I received regarding grievances from the nursing community here at Parirenyatwa Hospital,\" he said. \"They had raised these issues with the Chief Medical Officer and the Health Service Commission, but I felt there was a gap in communication. I have an open-door policy, and I talk to everyone regardless of rank - that's why I came here.\" The minister added that key grievances centered on inadequate earnings, transportation difficulties, poor accommodation, and workplace challenges. \"We are exploring how to improve allowances to ensure healthcare workers can better support their families,\" he said. In addition to worker welfare, staff also highlighted the dire shortage of hospital equipment, sundries, drugs, and the poor state of infrastructure. One nurse described the minister's visit as \"the first step\" toward resolving long-standing challenges, expressing hope for meaningful reforms. The minister's visit is part of broader government efforts to overhaul Zimbabwe's healthcare system. A recent milestone includes a landmark health cooperation agreement signed with Belarus during President Emmerson Mnangagwa's state visit to Minsk. The deal will see Parirenyatwa Hospital benefit from a targeted transformation programme focusing on infrastructure rehabilitation, medical equipment upgrades, and enhanced international partnerships in medical training and service delivery. Dr Mombeshora's hands-on approach has been widely seen as a positive shift in government responsiveness, raising hopes among healthcare workers that their voices are finally being heard.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe's aggressive anti-smuggling blitz is beginning to bear fruit, easing pressure on local beverage producers and setting the stage for increased production and market growth, according to Delta Corporation Limited. Presenting the group's financial results for the year ending March 2025, Delta, the country's largest producer of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, credited the government-led crackdown on smuggled goods for stabilising the domestic market and creating space for local brands to thrive. Group Finance Director Mr Alex Makamure told ZBC News that the impact of the anti-smuggling initiative became most visible in the final quarter of 2024, as illicit imports declined and consumer demand for locally manufactured beverages rose. \"The effects of the anti-smuggling drive on our products or operations began to be realised later in the last quarter,\" Makamure said. \"The reduction in imported products provided an opportunity for us to maximise production and accelerate growth. The financials we presented today reflect that growth trajectory, which we expect to carry through 2025.\" He added that while the crackdown has created breathing space for local producers, competition from regional players remains, making it critical to maintain stable economic policies that support local industry. \"There is still competition from other regional players, but we're committed to strengthening domestic brands. Our focus remains on increasing output and unlocking value for shareholders, supported by a more stable macro-economic environment,\" Makamure added. Zimbabwe's beverage sector had been under pressure from smuggled and counterfeit imports, which not only eroded market share but also posed serious health risks to consumers. However, optimism has been rekindled since government launched the anti-smuggling campaign late last year to protect local industries. Industry analysts say the improved policy environment and regulatory enforcement are vital to the recovery of the manufacturing sector, which has long battled against an uneven playing field caused by illicit trade. With domestic brands now regaining ground and confidence returning, companies like Delta are poised to ramp up production and drive forward Zimbabwe's industrial revival agenda.",

      • "content": "The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has called for public patience as investigations into high-profile corruption cases continue, amid rising concerns that only low-level offenders are being prosecuted while prominent figures evade justice. Prosecutor General Justice Loyce Matanda-Moyo made the plea during a courtesy visit by newly appointed Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) commissioners at her Harare offices on Thursday. Responding to widespread public skepticism over the handling of grand corruption cases, Matanda-Moyo assured citizens that investigations are ongoing but emphasized that complex cases require time to build solid legal grounds. \"High-profile matters have always been dealt with without political interference,\" she said. \"Such cases are often intricate due to the complexity of the evidence involved. For instance, the Abacha case in Nigeria took over 15 years to conclude. Zimbabweans need to be patient and allow our investigators the time they need.\" Her remarks come at a time when both the NPA and ZACC face criticism over what some see as selective prosecution and a failure to tackle systemic corruption at the highest levels of government and business. Newly sworn-in ZACC Commissioner Kindness Paradza also sought to reassure the public that a new era of decisive action has begun. \"The perception that ZACC is a toothless bulldog, known for catch-and-release tactics or being used to settle personal scores, is over. We are not here for that,\" Paradza said. \"We are committed to giving ZACC the gravitas it deserves to effectively carry out its mandate.\" The Second Republic has introduced a raft of reforms aimed at strengthening the fight against corruption, including the establishment of specialised anti-corruption courts and intensified public awareness campaigns. While critics remain skeptical, officials insist that the ongoing efforts signal a genuine commitment to transparency and accountability at all levels.",

      • "content": "The Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) this Friday commissioned 202 Officer Cadets who successfully completed a gruelling 22-month military training programme, pledging their commitment to safeguard the country's territorial integrity and uphold the values of national service. The commissioning ceremony, held at the academy in Gweru, marked the 40th Regular Officer Cadet Commissioning Parade since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980. It was a proud and emotional occasion for both the cadets and their families, as they officially transitioned from trainees to commissioned officers under the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF). Military training is globally known for its tough regimen, and the ZMA is no exception. The course began with 250 candidates, but only 202 completed the rigorous training, which tested their physical endurance, mental strength, and leadership skills. \"The course commenced training with a total of 250 candidates comprising 183 from the Zimbabwe National Army, 65 from the Air Force of Zimbabwe, and two cadets - one male and one female - from the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force,\" said ZMA Commandant, Brigadier General Crispen Nduku. \"Of the total enrolment, 73 were female and 177 male students. Forty-six cadets, including 27 males and 19 females, could not cope with the demanding nature of the training and dropped out, while two cadets were seconded to Mozambique for an exchange programme.\" The newly commissioned officers expressed their readiness to serve and protect the nation. \"We have made it this far by the grace of God. Zimbabwe can count on us - we are ready to serve with pride and integrity,\" said one of the cadets. Parents and guardians also beamed with pride as they witnessed their children's transformation into military leaders. \"I am a proud parent today. Seeing my son shake hands with the President is a moment I'll never forget. This is a first in our family,\" said an emotional parent. Among the graduating class, Officer Cadet Danmore Matsenhuke was named the best overall student, recognized for his exceptional performance during training. The parade not only showcased the cadets' discipline and readiness but also reinforced the importance of maintaining a strong and professional defence force. With more female cadets taking part in the programme, the ZMA continues to promote gender inclusivity in national security roles. The 40th commissioning ceremony marks another milestone in Zimbabwe's efforts to build a resilient and capable military force to preserve peace, sovereignty, and development.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe's trade deficit ballooned to US$543 million in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 28% increase from the US$424 million recorded during the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat). The sharp rise in the deficit was fuelled by a 6.8% surge in imports, which climbed to US$2.29 billion, while exports edged up by only 1.5%, reaching US$1.75 billion compared to US$1.72 billion in the first quarter of 2024. Imports were dominated by fuel, electricity, and essential manufactured goods, reflecting the country's ongoing struggles with domestic production shortfalls and persistent power outages. South Africa remained Zimbabwe's top import partner, followed by China, the Bahamas, Mozambique, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In contrast, exports were largely concentrated in raw minerals, with gold and other commodities making up the bulk of shipments to markets including the UAE, China, and South Africa. However, falling global commodity prices and the country's limited capacity for value addition curbed more substantial growth in export revenues. Economic analysts warn that the widening trade gap could place additional strain on Zimbabwe's already fragile foreign currency reserves and hinder efforts to stabilise the local currency. \"The 28% year-on-year increase in trade deficit represents a concerning structural deterioration,\" said Stevenson Dhlamini, a research fellow at the Public Policy and Research Institute of Zimbabwe. \"Import growth significantly outpaced export growth, with a 5.3 percentage point difference. This indicates a weakening trade position and further pressure on forex reserves.\" Economist Trust Chikohora added that global headwinds, including trade tensions and a broader slowdown in international markets, were compounding the challenge. \"The global economy is under strain, and this has hurt demand for key commodities,\" he said. \"Minerals, which are crucial to Zimbabwe's export base, are particularly affected as global manufacturing slows down.\" Chikohora also pointed to domestic challenges, including electricity shortages exacerbated by last year's El Niño-induced drought and operational setbacks at Hwange Power Station, which have forced the country to ramp up power imports. \"Importing electricity and other basics like maize, following previous harvest shortfalls, has inflated the import bill. Meanwhile, high business costs and infrastructure deficits are hampering export competitiveness,\" he noted. Both economists called for urgent policy interventions to address the structural trade imbalance, including boosting local production, diversifying exports, investing in value addition, and creating a more conducive environment for both domestic and foreign investors. Without corrective measures, they cautioned, the trade deficit is likely to continue widening, worsening macroeconomic imbalances and undermining economic recovery efforts.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe received US$16 million in emergency food assistance from China in 2023 to cushion vulnerable communities from the impact of the El Niño-induced drought, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding revealed on Friday. Speaking during the commissioning of the China-Zimbabwe Agricultural Co-operation Demonstration Village in Zindi village, Shamva District, Ambassador Zhou said the intervention supported Zimbabwe's Food Deficit Mitigation Programme and helped ease the suffering of drought-affected households. \"This assistance significantly alleviated the hardships faced by many communities during a challenging period,\" Zhou said. The newly commissioned demonstration village is equipped with vital infrastructure, including solar-powered boreholes and water points, designed to ensure efficient irrigation and consistent water supply for residents. Highlighting the broader significance of the initiative, Zhou said it draws inspiration from China's own remarkable transformation and poverty reduction successes. \"Over the past four decades, China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty - more than 70% of the global poverty reduction figure. We believe Zimbabwe, with more than 60% of its population in rural areas, must prioritise rural development to unlock the country's full potential,\" he said. Zhou also introduced Juncao technology, a pioneering Chinese innovation capable of producing edible mushrooms, animal feed, and supporting ecological restoration - offering multi-faceted benefits to local farming communities. The Zindi project, part of China's Global Development Initiative, is focused on strengthening collaboration in food security, climate resilience, and rural economic empowerment. It has already yielded promising results, with local maize farmers achieving an average of five tonnes per hectare. To further bolster the initiative, the Chinese government has pledged an additional US$100,000 worth of agricultural equipment. This includes hatching machines, incubators, solar panels, and other tools to boost productivity and modernise farming practices. Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Vangelis Haritatos, welcomed the development, saying it supports the government's rural industrialisation vision. \"We must replicate this model across the country through our Village Business Units. The goal is to reverse urban migration by creating vibrant rural economies that add value to agricultural produce and generate employment,\" Haritatos said. The project is expected to serve as a blueprint for rural transformation, providing a sustainable path toward food security and economic resilience for marginalised communities.",

      • "content": "The Government has released ZiG516.4 million to various local authorities to support social infrastructure development and the procurement of critical equipment, Finance Deputy Minister David Mnangagwa has announced. Speaking in Parliament during a question-and-answer session, Mnangagwa said the funds were part of the broader devolution programme designed to empower local authorities and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level. \"To date, ZiG516.4 million has been disbursed to various local authorities targeting social infrastructural development and procurement of equipment,\" said Mnangagwa. He highlighted that while Treasury remained committed to making quarterly devolution disbursements in accordance with the Zimbabwe Inter-governmental Fiscal Transfer Systems Administrative Manual, there was a need for more strategic coordination. \"Benefiting tiers of government must proactively engage the line ministry and Treasury to align cashflow disbursements with their implementation plans. This ensures that some of the targeted projects and programmes are effectively implemented and completed,\" he added. Mnangagwa also noted that delays and limited devolution disbursements in some areas were due to competing national priorities, such as road construction and other infrastructure initiatives that required immediate funding. Responding to a question about the allocation to Kadoma, Mnangagwa said specific figures on cash resources availed to that local authority would be obtained from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. The devolution programme is one of the key strategies under the Second Republic's agenda to promote inclusive development by decentralising resources and decision-making powers to local governance structures.",

      • "content": "Doom. Four letters, two gunbarrels, one space marine and boatloads of demon guts is all it takes to change the face of gaming forever. Id Software’s seminal series is ground zero for first-person shooters, PC gaming, online multiplayer, community modding, speedrunning, and so, so much more. Video games are still living in the shadow of this infernal masterpiece three-decades later. The FPS genre has evolved a lot since the days they were called “Doom-likes,” and so has the series itself– with varying degrees of success. How does your favorite title rank among the seven (or so) main entries in the franchise? Which Doom games cover themselves in guts and glory, and which are cursed to wallow knee-deep in the unalived? We promise not to be too rough as we rip and tear through the series to bring you every Doom: Ranked. 7. Doom 3 2004’s Doom 3 is the end result of an ultimatum John Carmack issued to the rest of Id, and it kind of feels that way. To their credit, Carmack and crew made some big changes in pursuit of modernizing the series. Doom 3 is a slower, more story-driven affair than the first two games. There are voiced NPCs and lore-filled terminals that you interact with in a super clever way. Its jumpscares and “monster closets” instill a sense of anxious survival horror, a sharp contrast to the run-and-gun arcade frenzy of classic Doom. It’s a valiant effort to bring Doom to a new generation of gamer culture. The problem is that this generation was extremely ugly. The graphics tech itself is awesome. The projectiles and explosions almost make the game’s dull metal hallways interesting, but Id’s decision to showcase the game’s lighting engine is the game’s fatal flaw. You can’t see anything. Intentionally. The game is tuned to be super dark until you switch to your flashlight, which you cannot use at the same time as your weapon. This was largely met with derision from fans, but the combat is actually tuned around it– juggling between seeing your enemy and shooting it creates a huge amount of drama and tension. It’s actually kind of cool, just not that fun. A popular “duct tape” mod addressed this, as did Doom 3’s “BFG Edition” remaster, but it somehow makes things worse. Having your light and your gun trivializes the entire combat loop. It’s the worst of both worlds. The new demon designs are sapped of color and charm, turning iconic abominations into run-of-the-mill Umbrella B.O.W.s. It’s impossible to envision them as anything but their counterparts in the 2005 movie. The aesthetic is very of its era and just all wrong for Doom. Doom is a heavy metal mural airbrushed on the side of a speeding van. Doom 3 is the embodiment of nu metal butt rock– more Mudvayne than Metallica. Decent for what it is, but it would take 12 years more before the series got a refresh with some actual rizz. 6. Doom 64 Some fans insist that Doom 64 is the true sequel to Doom 1 and 2. Id closely supervised Midway Games’ development of the N64 exclusive, resulting in an interesting but ultimately inconsequential side entry in the series– A Doom gaiden. The game still utilizes sprites, but instead of digitized photos of hand-sculpted maquettes, Doom 64’s demons are pre-rendered with the same SGI tech as Donkey Kong Country. The enemy designs are slightly more subdued, but nowhere near the grey blobs of Doom 3, and they’re a higher resolution than the vintage bestiary. Doom 64 isn’t hurt too much by its titular console’s limitations, but there are fewer enemies thanks to small cartridge sizes, and the reduced animation frames on the shotguns really robs them of their kick. Worst of all, Midway couldn’t get multiplayer working, despite four-player, split-screen Doom deathmatches being a perfect fit for the system that gave us Goldeneye. Still, on the whole the game looks great. Doom 64 has a uniquely bleak, gothic vibe, with a gorgeous colored lighting system that’s impressively sophisticated for the era. Instead of MIDI speed metal, the soundtrack is a dark ambient drone. There’s no HUD, no grimacing Doomguy face, only subtle numbers and letters rendered in bleary N64 textures. The gameplay is largely the same, though a new scripted events system creates neat opportunities for map design. Doom 64 seems like the game Carmack’s co-owners were afraid Id was going to make: More Doom, slightly different. It’s just not different enough to warrant a higher place on the list. Doom 64 is a fun, fascinating, evolutionary dead end. That brings us to another followup that doesn’t reinvent the wheel: 5. Doom II Today’s fans demand big changes to make a sequel worthwhile, but in the olden days folks were perfectly happy with an iterative successor like Doom II. 32 new levels designed in-house by Id, a bunch of new enemies, and just one new weapon was more than enough to make Doom II the highest-selling software program of 1994. Doom II is Doom refined. Old monsters are reconfigured in clever ways while fresh faces like the Revenant and Arch-Vile add more complexity to demon distribution. Your arsenal has only one addition, but it’s a weapon that would come to define Doom: the Super Shotgun. So, with all this great new stuff, shouldn’t Doom II be a straight upgrade to the original? It almost is, but Doom II’s map design just doesn’t hit the same. Maybe it’s the amount of larger, more open levels compared to the disciplined precision of the original’s holy spaces. Doom II was billed as “Hell on Earth,” but the aging tech couldn’t really produce convincing Suburbs or Downtown the same way Duke Nukem’s Build Engine would a couple of years later. It’s also possible that John Romero was checked out. On the verge of leaving the company after clashing over Quake, Romero contributed fewer and less-interesting maps to Doom II compared to his ten definitive levels from the first game, which may be why Id programmers snuck their co-founder’s disembodied head inside the final boss. Doom II feels like less of a journey than Doom. As shareware, the first game was divided into three (later four) clear episodes, with interstitial map screens between levels tracing your path of destruction across the moons of Mars until thy flesh is consumed by Hell itself. As a boxed game from the get go, Doom II is presented as a barely-connected 32-level megawad. The game supposedly depicts a full-on demon invasion of Earth, but this is mostly conveyed through three different skyboxes. Map duties were largely handled by designers American McGee, of later Alice fame, and Sandy Peterson, who really shines with unique gimmick levels like Tricks & Traps and the infamous Barrels o’ Fun. Doom II has some great maps and lots of innovative twists on the formula, but on the whole it’s a less cohesive and satisfying package than the first game. At the time, map quality didn’t matter quite as much. Fans had already been sharing their own custom levels en masse, passed around as .wad files via floppy disks and 28-kilobaud modems. Doom II is almost more notable as a platform than as a standalone title. It gave modders and wadders a chance to shine and even go legit. A group called TeamTNT created two megawads that impressed Id so much they bought the rights and slapped them together for retail as “Final Doom.” Today, these maps and others have been fully incorporated into the canon by modern releases of Doom II. It makes the game a more comprehensive product, but that’s not enough to elevate it above our next, and most recent entry: 4. Doom: The Dark Ages The Dark Ages couldn’t be more different than Doom II. A sequel that refuses to offer more of the same, The Dark Ages takes a sharp turn away from the neon frenzy of Doom Eternal into a grim and gothic new setting, with drastically altered gameplay to match. If Eternal is Doom meets Devil May Cry, The Dark Ages is Doom Souls. The gameplay isn’t slow, like some of the trailers would have you believe, but it is deliberate, and the player’s individual actions have more consequences. Stand and fight is more than just a marketing slogan, it’s the only way you’re going to take down some bosses and badder enemies. Melee combat means getting up close and personal with monsters, trading mace blows and shotgun blasts in a boxing match from hell. Gone is Eternal’s verticality, deliberately downplayed in homage to the original Doom’s lack of a jump button. Projectiles move more slowly, choking the battlefield with patterns that evoke bullet-hell shmups and Serious Sam. Glory kills are a shadow of their former, well, glory, taking a backseat to the new rhythms of The Dark Ages’ combat. The most impactful addition to the Doom formula is the parry mechanism that allows the player to deflect green attacks with the integral new shield saw. It’s the backbone around which the game is designed and it’s not going to click with everybody, but The Dark Ages brings a few firsts to the franchise, like friendly NPCs fighting alongside the Slayer and difficulty sliders to make the series more accessible. It’s also the first game since Doom 64 to lack any kind of multiplayer. The Slayer trilogy’s online components have been a noble but largely perfunctory effort. Id decided to ditch it entirely and focus on making the most compelling campaign they could, exchanging multiplayer and snapmap for dragon riding and giant mechs. It’s bummer to see the IP that literally invented deathmatch drift away from multiplayer entirely, but frankly a lot of fans aren’t going to miss it. You have to give modern Id credit: they just will not make the same game twice. Will The Dark Ages become the new way forward for the franchise or merely an interesting diversion like the aforementioned Doom 64? Only time will tell if it has the same staying power as our next entry, 3. Doom: Eternal Doom: Eternal is a Doom game’s Doom game. It’s everything a fan of Doom 2016 would expect from a sequel, and while the vibe is different from its predecessor, the whole experience feels more vibrant and alive. The Doom franchise isn’t exactly known for its awe-inspiring vistas and diverse biomes, but Eternal impressively mixes snow levels and baroque ivory fortresses in with the usual techbases and fleshy hellscapes. We’re not used to seeing this kind of environmental variety in Doom, and it’s a refreshing change of pace. The monsters have shed the last remnants of their realistic Doom 3 designs and embraced their inner iconography. Cacodemons bleed blue again, the Imps have all their spikes back, and the former humans have once again embraced the crew cut. If Illumination ever made an animated Doom movie, this is what the monsters would look like. In line with the more expressive demons, Doom: Eternal embraces its inherent arcadeiness. The Doomslayer now has extra lives, which he secures from glowing in-world pickups that literally say “1UP.” Weapons and items now float off the ground and spin around, easier to spot and snag as you double jump across implausible arenas with not one but two airdashes. Doom: Eternal is unrepentantly a video game, designed for maximum readability and playability. It’s worth noting that the game’s technical performance is impeccable, offering smooth frame rates across a variety of hardware that would make its famously compatible ancestor proud. When it comes to combat, Doom: Eternal asks a lot more of you than 2016. Ammo is much more scarce, forcing you to juggle through most of your weapons in nearly every fight. Choosing the right gun for the right enemy and exploiting their weak spots is essential, though some fans argue that the Marauders, dark Doomguy counterparts with a limited vulnerability window, are a bridge too far for the power fantasy. Doom: Eternal’s biggest flaw is that it’s doing too much. The Doomslayer has new guns and enemies to deal with, a meathook to yank yourself across the battlefield, and a shoulder cannon with grenades and bombs and fire belches that are crucial for survival– on top of an avalanche of additional collectibles, resources, and upgrade trees Even the Doomguy himself has gotten a little too big for his armored green britches, having somehow come into possession of a massive outer space fortress between games, a vast hub to explore that has plenty of great easter eggs and secrets but also a lot of locked doors and samey-looking hallways to get lost in. Speaking of getting lost, Doom: Eternal suffers under a sheer mountain of lore. Endless paragraphs of indecipherable sci-fi fantasy with more proper nouns than a phone book are at your bloody fingertips. To some, it’s a welcome addition that makes the series that much more rich. For others, it’s an albatross around the neck of Doom’s action-first ethos: start shooting as soon as the screen melts. It’s an excellent sequel, superior to its predecessor in many ways, but as a total package, it falls just short of 2. Doom (2016) Doom 2016 is the platonic ideal of Doom. It marries the kinetic and aesthetic purity of the original with a winking, self-aware tone that evokes not just the first game’s “Hurt Me Plenty” attitude but society’s perception of the series. This is the Doom we envisioned in our adolescent brains. It’s the Doom of the infamous ‘90s comic, the ultraviolent nightmare that Jack Thompson and Joe Lieberman warned us about– and it is glorious . But Doom 2016 almost didn’t happen. The game was originally conceived as “Doom 4,” designed around a dull-looking modern-day demon invasion that incorporated some of the worst excesses of 7th-gen shooter design. Scripted setpieces, cover-based firefights, and health regeneration earned Doom 4 the derisive nickname “Call of Doom.” Why “press F to pay respects” when you could “press F to rip a demon’s jaw off and slice open its belly?” Marty Silva and Hugo Martin salvaged Doom 4 from the shores of development hell by stripping it into a back-to-basics, gleefully indulgent romp that fully rekindles the lost soul of the series. It’s no coincidence that retro “boomer shooters” comeback began right around Doom 2016. The aggressive, push-forward gameplay has you leaping onto cacodemons in midair as Mick Gordon’s impossibly detuned guitars belch out riffs of pure hype. It’s here we first see the glory kills, expanded on in future sequels but never quite as elegant as their debut. Simple is the operative word of Doom 2016, and sometimes to its detriment. Unlike later games, there’s little incentive to cycle through your weapons. It’s easy to let the rockets or the SSG carry you to the Spider-Mastermind. Still, the barebones approach is appreciated, particularly when it comes to the plot. It was John Carmack who famously compared video game stories to those of x-rated movies: “It’s expected to be there, but not important.” Doom 2016’s less-is-more approach is extremely refreshing after the dense Metal Hurlant nightmares of its sequels. The storytelling is never really bad in Eternal or The Dark Ages, but also never quite as funny as the Doomslayer seething with impatient rage as exposition drones on. It took some huge guts to name the 2016 reboot “Doom,” but that very confidence is what propels this game to greatness. There’s only one shooter in the world that could possibly top Doom 2016. But first: 1. Doom Doom has more than earned its spot on the Mt. Rushmore of the medium. As chronicled in the excellent book Masters of Doom, the game's creation is a brilliant example of developers stripping away extraneous details and focusing on what works. As a followup to Id’s groundbreaking but plodding and plain shooter Wolfenstein 3D, original designer Tom Hall dreamed up a sprawling space RPG with multiple playable characters, an inventory system, and a thick “bible” filled with backstory and lore. Carmack and Romero rightly recognized all of this as chaff that got in the way of the fast and brutal gameplay they envisioned. They slowly stripped away unnecessary flavor and realism until what remained was a bare-bones, no BS exercise in adrenaline. Doom is like the titular Xenomorph in Alien: One must respect its purity. There’s no mouselook in the original Doom. Aiming on the y-axis literally doesn’t matter, you can hit that Imp on a ledge above you as long as it’s centered on your gun. Doomguy cannot jump, and his only interaction with the world besides shooting, punching, and chainsawing is a single “use” button that you’ll spam endlessly as you search each legendary map for secret doors. Anyone can pick up the game today, whether through a fan-made source port or an official rerelease, and immediately understand the assignment. Run, gun, rip and tear. Find keys and snag powerups to keep Doomguy alive as he stares bullets through your soul from the UI. To say Doom has aged is to say Tetris or Pac Man has aged. Its simplicity is its greatest strength– there’s almost no friction between you and the coveted “flow state” towards which all action games aspire. Doom’s kinetic appeal makes it immortal, Released as shareware, anyone with a working PC was free to play the first episode of Doom, from the iconic first moments of E1M1 to beating the Bruiser Brothers in Phobos Anomaly. You could mail a check to Id if you wanted more, but the sheer accessibility and availability of Knee-Deep in the Dead’s nine perfect levels all but ensured Doom’s dominance. Doom became shorthand for gaming itself. The moral panic over video game violence resulted in pundits and politicians alike warning parents of the gory, demonic slaughter simulator warping their children’s minds, blaming the shooter for real-world tragedies. It's a sad footnote in an otherwise unparalleled success story, and a formative moment in gaming history that helped shape a still-developing industry. At the start of every new project, the current developers at Id play through the original Doom, to re-familiarize themselves with its brilliance and look for interesting new ways to expand the formula. Every single entry on this list is in some way a response to the first game, either trying to recapture its glory or recreate what makes it fun. Some games succeed, others have faltered, but they’re all chasing after perfection that was already achieved in 1993. Doom is still the best Doom. Where does your favorite Doom rank on the spectrum? Would you have put Eternal above 2016? Should we have included the surprisingly awesome mobile phone RPGs? Leave a comment and let us know.",

      • "content": "A 53-year-old woman from Hatcliffe, Harare, originally from Marembera in Uzumba, Murehwa, says two of her children mysteriously died after a prophet poured two buckets of water over her in a ritual meant to \"cleanse\" her of bad luck. The ritual, performed by a prophet from the Johane Masowe Nyenyedzi Nomwe sect, has since left her haunted and suffering what she believes are spiritual attacks. Rodah Penzwa, who once worshipped at the apostolic sect, revealed that the troubles began after she underwent a spiritual initiation ceremony which included being allegedly possessed by snake and goblin spirits. \"I feel a snake slithering all over my body, especially around my legs. At times, it comes out through the crown of my head. This snake has a human head and sexually violates me either while I'm asleep or fully awake,\" said Penzwa. She said the problems began after she was anointed with a milk-infused liquid by the sect leader, who claimed to be driving away evil spirits and fortifying her. But shortly after the ritual, her son and daughter died within a short space of time, without having shown any signs of illness. \"I attended both funerals one after the other. I never went back to that shrine after other prophets told me that I had been spiritually manipulated and had my destiny taken away,\" Penzwa explained. She later approached the same prophet for deliverance from the snake and goblins she believes were tormenting her, but he insisted she first return to the same church for him to help her. \"He said he couldn't help me unless I came back to his shrine. I lost two children in unexplained circumstances. Now I'm left with five children, but none of them want to come home. They all accuse me of being a witch,\" she lamented. Penzwa says her entire extended family now labels her a witch due to the spiritual oaths and rituals performed on her. \"There are times I physically transform into a snake, and I see my face change to that of a snake. I'm tired of being treated like a wife by this spirit snake every night. Even going to the toilet has become a challenge. All this happens with my husband present,\" she said. \"I can no longer live a normal life. Our bedroom is filled with large mysterious cats and lizards. I don't know where they come from,\" she added. Penzwa also said she sometimes struggles to breathe and feels like she is being strangled by invisible forces. \"I've consulted various prophets and traditional healers, but nothing has helped. My husband is also worn out by all this. My children now believe I'm a witch because of the things I received from this prophet. But I'm not into witchcraft,\" she insisted. She says she can no longer work due to being constantly afflicted by the snake spirit that claims her as its spiritual spouse. Despite the severity of her condition, Penzwa admits she has never sought help at a hospital, believing her case requires traditional or spiritual intervention. Traditional healer Letwin Manguwo, popularly known as Gogo Mamoyo, believes the prophet in question may have transferred his own spiritual burdens onto Penzwa. \"This woman needs urgent help before the situation gets worse. That prophet is cruel,\" said Gogo Mamoyo. Madzibaba Owen Chingondi of Chitungwiza echoed the same concerns, describing the incident as one of serious spiritual manipulation. \"It's tragic that someone seeking help ends up burdened with such heavy spiritual baggage. She may not even understand when or how it all started. She needs to consult a skilled spiritual medium for proper guidance. It's also possible the prophet is not to blame, but only a reading by a professional will clarify things,\" said Madzibaba Owen.",

      • "content": "Dr Charles Shava has been appointed the substantive General Manager of the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), bringing to a close a protracted battle over the leadership of Zimbabwe's US$1.2 billion statutory pension fund. Shava, who has held the position in an acting capacity since July 2022 while concurrently serving as Director of Occupational Safety and Health, officially assumes the role with effect from 1 March 2025. The appointment was confirmed through a letter dated 28 February 2025. The confirmation of Shava's appointment follows months of internal wrangling within NSSA's top ranks, with board chairman Emmanuel Fundira reportedly attempting to block the decision on personal and self-interested grounds. The standoff had caused a delay in finalizing Shava's elevation to the top job, despite him having effectively led the institution for nearly three years. Shava replaces Arthur Manase, who was placed on leave of absence in July 2022 and subsequently left the authority in August 2023 amid a storm of corruption and mismanagement allegations. Manase had faced over 30 charges ranging from abuse of office and maladministration to financial misconduct. The position of NSSA General Manager - equivalent to a chief executive officer - is regarded as one of the most strategic and powerful roles within Zimbabwe's public sector. The role commands broad authority over the management of NSSA's operations and control of its extensive investment portfolio, which includes interests in banking, real estate, manufacturing, health, and agriculture. NSSA, a statutory body mandated to provide social security to Zimbabweans, has struggled with leadership instability for years. Since 2015, the institution has witnessed a revolving door of directors, general managers, and staff, with many removed due to scandal or poor performance. This high turnover has been a key factor undermining the authority's ability to deliver consistent and effective services to pensioners and contributors. Shava's appointment is seen as a potential stabilizing force for the institution, with expectations that he will restore confidence, improve governance, and reposition NSSA to better serve its mandate. His background in occupational health and safety, along with his experience within NSSA, places him in a strong position to lead critical reforms and strengthen the institution's administrative and investment frameworks. The government and stakeholders will be watching closely as Shava takes the reins, hoping that his leadership will mark a turning point for NSSA after years of controversy and underperformance.",

      • "content": "Concerned parents and guardians at Kumalo Primary School in Bulawayo are pressing for immediate action from education authorities following the continued presence of the school’s headmistress, Stella Mhlanga, despite facing serious allegations of financial misconduct. Mhlanga and four other staff members were arrested on 14 April 2025 after a government audit—prompted by concerns raised by the School Development Committee (SDC)—uncovered alleged embezzlement of school funds. The financial discrepancies were first flagged in February, leading to the probe. Although charges have been laid and bail proceedings are scheduled for 28 May 2025, Mhlanga remains in her role, sparking frustration among parents who say her continued leadership undermines accountability. “It’s unacceptable that someone facing such serious accusations is still running the school,” said one parent, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal. “She should have been suspended pending the outcome of the case.” Another parent echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of transparency and ethical leadership in education. “It sends the wrong message to pupils and the community. We expect better from those entrusted with our children’s learning,” the parent said. Bulawayo’s Provincial Education Director, Bernard Mazambani, confirmed that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has initiated disciplinary action. “We are conducting our own internal investigations, separate from the criminal process. In fact, there are two cases underway. One involves charges already laid against Mhlanga, and the other concerns financial mismanagement reported by the SDC,” he explained. Mazambani noted that the province had recommended Mhlanga’s suspension during the investigation. However, the final decision was reversed by higher authorities within the Ministry. He added that an investigation team from Matabeleland North recently visited the school and met with the SDC and staff linked to the case—Mhlanga did not attend that meeting. This is not Mhlanga’s first brush with controversy. In August 2024, she was suspended and replaced by deputy head Eneles Sibanda while disciplinary hearings were pending. Oddly, she was reinstated on 4 September 2024, even before the initial suspension period ended. Her scheduled hearing on 29 August was never held after the presiding official, Lameck Mudyiwa, failed to appear. Further back, in 2021, Mhlanga drew national attention when an explicit photo believed to be of her appeared on her WhatsApp status. Though she quickly deleted the image, it had already been widely circulated. Following a police probe, she was arrested and her Samsung Galaxy Note (model N910F) was examined by cybercrime experts in Bulawayo, who found four pornographic images on the device. She was charged under Section 26 of the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act [Chapter 10:04], which deals with the possession of prohibited content. However, she was acquitted in April 2022, after arguing that the phone previously belonged to her sister in South Africa and had been reset before she received it. Magistrate Marygold Ndlovu ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. Despite this acquittal, the string of controversies has led to renewed calls for accountability, with many parents now urging the Ministry to act swiftly and decisively in the interest of transparency and restoring trust in school leadership. • "content": "Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora has moved to dispel growing fears over antiretroviral (ARV) drug shortages, assuring the nation that Zimbabwe has adequate supplies to meet national needs until the end of 2025. His remarks come amid reports of ARV hoarding and bribery at health institutions, driven by public anxiety following the partial suspension of United States funding to HIV/AIDS programmes in Zimbabwe. Addressing journalists at a press briefing on Friday, Dr Mombeshora said the country currently has eight months' worth of adult ARV stock and four months' supply of paediatric ARVs. He reaffirmed that there is no risk of stockouts, noting that all treatment regimens remain fully supported. \"The Ministry of Health and Child Care manages medicine supplies using a minimum and maximum inventory control system, where 14 months is the maximum and 8 months is the minimum,\" he explained. \"For adult first-line ARVs, we have eight months of stock. For paediatric formulations, the Ministry is phasing out older products and introducing a new triple fixed-dose combination (FDC). While the outgoing medicines have four months of stock remaining, new shipments of the improved FDC are expected in July, which will add five more months of supply.\" He further stated: \"Our antiretroviral therapy (ART) medicine requirements for 2025 are fully funded.\" The reassurances come in the wake of patient reports alleging that some healthcare workers are soliciting bribes in exchange for larger ARV allocations, exploiting widespread fear of possible shortages. Some patients are reportedly paying to receive six-month supplies instead of standard shorter allocations. Dr Mombeshora acknowledged earlier shipment delays caused by a US Government Stop Work Order issued to partner agencies supporting HIV programmes. However, he said swift government intervention ensured continued medication supply. \"Through the National AIDS Council (NAC), we mobilised domestic resources to fill the gap and guarantee uninterrupted access to these life-saving medicines,\" he said. \"This move has protected the significant progress we have made in achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.\" Zimbabwe has made strong strides in its fight against HIV/AIDS, with over 1.2 million people currently living with HIV. The country's continued access to ARVs is vital for maintaining treatment adherence and preventing the development of drug resistance. Dr Mombeshora urged the public to remain calm and not to engage in panic-buying or corrupt practices, assuring that monitoring systems remain in place to manage medicine distribution effectively.",

      • "content": "The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has launched a comprehensive transport system modernisation programme aimed at enhancing road safety and streamlining regulatory services in Manicaland Province. Key to the initiative is the installation of truck arrestor beds and weighbridges at strategic locations including the Mutare Tollgate and around Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, both near the treacherous Christmas Pass. Truck arrestor beds are critical safety structures designed to halt or slow down vehicles—especially trucks—experiencing brake failure while descending steep gradients. They are filled with sand or gravel and constructed to absorb and dissipate kinetic energy, safely bringing vehicles to a stop. The Mutare Tollgate and the hospital vicinity, both at the base of the notorious Christmas Pass, are high-risk zones for brake-failure-related accidents. Manicaland Provincial Roads Engineer, Mr Raphael Sigauke, confirmed that construction of the truck arrestor bed at the Mutare Tollgate is already underway, with another planned near the hospital. \"The Christmas Pass has seen several fatal accidents due to brake failure on trucks. These arrestor beds are designed to reduce such incidents by offering a secure zone for runaway vehicles,\" he said. In addition, weighbridges will be installed at tollgates to enforce statutory weight limits on commercial vehicles. These systems will help prevent overloading, reduce road infrastructure damage, and minimise the risk of road accidents. VID and Road Motor Transport Director, Mr Allowance Sango, said the integration of weighbridges into tollgate systems is part of the ministry's broader plan to create one-stop service centres. \"The integration of weighbridges with tollgates will enhance road safety, improve regulatory compliance, and reduce operational delays. It allows for real-time monitoring, helping authorities identify and penalise overloaded vehicles on the spot,\" said Mr Sango. He added that the initiative aligns with the Government's ease-of-doing-business agenda, offering motorists a streamlined process for toll payments, vehicle inspections, and weighbridge checks at a single point. Currently, Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) officers rely on mobile roadblocks to direct suspected overloaded vehicles to the nearest depot—often more than the legally permissible 15km distance—posing legal and logistical challenges. \"With weighbridges stationed at tollgates, this burden will be eased, and compliant drivers will no longer be inconvenienced,\" Mr Sango said. Meanwhile, the ministry is also addressing the accessibility of driving services in remote areas. Plans are at an advanced stage to establish a VID depot in either Chipinge urban or Birchenough Bridge to cater for residents who currently travel long distances to Mutare, Rusape, Chiredzi, or Marondera for driver testing and licensing. \"The Ministry is committed to expanding its services to underserved areas in line with the principles of devolution. No place or person should be left behind,\" said Mr Sango. \"There is a station at Birchenough Bridge offering weighing services, but the new depot will significantly improve service access for aspiring drivers in Chipinge District.\" The ministry's transport overhaul signals a renewed commitment to road safety, service delivery, and efficient infrastructure utilisation in Manicaland and across the country. Further details on site selections and rollout timelines will be announced once finalised.",

      • "content": "Two serial robbers who unleashed a reign of terror across rural Makoni District in 2024 have been convicted and sentenced to a combined 87 years in prison after being found guilty of 14 counts of robbery. Tapiwa Enock Samungure Machona (45), of Chief Saunyama area in Nyanga, and Tetanda Munyaradzi Kangai (47), from Farm 343 in Zviyambe, Hwedza, were convicted last week by Rusape magistrate Ms Rufaro Mangwiro. The State, led by prosecutor Mr Takunda Muzenda, presented overwhelming evidence linking the pair to a series of violent home invasions and robberies in villages including Tandi, Chiwetu, Chindukuro, and Mukamba. Machona was sentenced to 44 years in prison, with 34 years suspended on condition he restitutes US$3 640 and maintains good behaviour—leaving him with 10 effective years behind bars. Kangai received a 43-year sentence, with the same conditions applied, meaning he will serve nine years. The duo targeted villagers under the cover of darkness, using logs, machetes, and metal bars to threaten and assault their victims. They stole cash, clothes, electronics, and other valuables worth a total of US$4 957. In many instances, they tied up victims, stuffed cloths into their mouths, and ransacked homes, leaving families traumatised. Their criminal enterprise came to an abrupt end in July 2024, when they bungled a robbery in Magombo Village. During their escape from 73-year-old Mr Lazarus Ratimba's home, they dropped a cellphone that contained pictures of Kangai. The device, recovered by police, became the key piece of evidence that led to their arrest. In one of the first attacks on May 5, 2024, the duo broke into Ms Pamela Makwaya's house in Chiwetu Village, tied her up, and stole cellphones, a television, and cash. Just weeks later, they hit another home, robbing Ms Sandra Chingwena of US$881 at knifepoint. Similar violent break-ins followed, including attacks on high school learners from Nyakuipa and Sanzaguru, a 102-year-old grandmother, and teachers at local schools. In several incidents, the robbers gagged victims, including children, and threatened to torch homes if screams were heard. The youngest victims were tied up with neckties and string and left helpless as their belongings were stolen. The turning point came on July 9, 2024, when Mr Ratimba and his wife, Doreen, resisted the robbers' assault and screamed for help. Alerted neighbours responded, forcing the duo to flee. They dropped a cellphone and brown jacket near the homestead, which police later used to identify Kangai through photos found on the device. The phone was also linked to another robbery case in Mudzi. \"The accused persons fled with property worth US$100 but were identified after the discovery of a cellphone containing Kangai's photos. Investigations traced the gadget back to a previous case, and it ultimately led to the duo's arrest,\" said Mr Muzenda. The sentencing brings relief to affected communities that lived in fear for months. Many villagers had resigned themselves to the terror that stalked their homes at night, with some even afraid to sleep indoors. Despite only a fraction of the stolen property being recovered, justice has been served, and the convictions mark a significant success in combating rural crime in Manicaland. Meanwhile, authorities have urged rural residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement as police continue to crack down on criminal syndicates operating in remote areas.",

      • "content": "The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched a crackdown on school heads who defied a government directive barring the expulsion of learners over unpaid fees, insisting that schools must abide by Statutory Instrument 13 of 2025. The regulation also affirms parents' right to pay fees in any currency approved under the multi-currency system, with the official interbank exchange rate applying when fees are paid in Zimbabwean dollars. The second term of the 2025 academic year commenced on Tuesday, but several learners were reportedly turned away from school over outstanding fees – prompting swift intervention by education authorities. St Dominic's High School in Mutare is one such institution that drew the ministry's attention after scores of learners were barred from entering the school premises on the first day of the term. Officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education visited the school on Wednesday to demand an explanation, as the action contradicted the standing government policy. Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Mr Richard Gabaza, confirmed the incident and said schools operating under government policy are expected to comply with Statutory Instrument 13 of 2025. He warned that District Schools Inspectors (DSIs) had been tasked with investigating reports of non-compliance, and that school heads found guilty of breaching the directive would face disciplinary measures under the amended SI 1 of 2000. \"We expect all school heads to understand and comply with Government regulations, as schools operate under clear policy frameworks. While most school heads have complied, a few have allegedly violated Statutory Instrument 13 of 2025, which prohibits the turning away of learners over unpaid fees or uniforms,\" said Mr Gabaza. According to the regulation, no learner should be barred from attending class or writing examinations due to unpaid fees. Additionally, parents are permitted to purchase uniforms and stationery from suppliers of their choice, provided the items meet school requirements. Parents who are unable to pay fees in full are encouraged to enter payment arrangements with school authorities. A parent who spoke to The Manica Post anonymously expressed concern over the conduct at St Dominic's, alleging that the school's new leadership is prioritising fee collection over educational quality. \"I understand the need to pay fees, but it's worrying that children are being chased away while the school is employing A-Level graduates to teach exam classes. Why is there no urgency to hire qualified teachers using the fees they're so eager to collect?\" questioned the parent. Elsewhere in Manicaland, the Ministry reported a generally smooth reopening of schools, with over 90 percent of teachers reporting for duty and delivering lessons. Mr Gabaza also reiterated the Ministry's commitment to tackling bullying in schools, highlighting the recent rollout of workshops aimed at building capacity around learner welfare and creating safe, supportive school environments. He called on parents and communities to play a collaborative role in educating the 21st-century child amid challenges like drug and substance abuse. With winter now underway, Mr Gabaza urged parents to ensure their children are adequately clothed and to pay fees and levies promptly to avoid unnecessary complications. Meanwhile, accommodation challenges persist at several Anglican-run schools in the province, following over-enrolment of Form One learners last term. St Faith's High, St Augustine's High, and St David's Girls' High are among the affected institutions. The Anglican Diocese of Manicaland's education secretary, Reverend Edmund Samutereko, said the delay in constructing new dormitories has forced temporary measures. \"We missed the initial dormitory construction deadline, and we are now targeting completion by 2026. At St Augustine's, we have installed prefabricated structures, and former Russian compound houses nearby have been allocated to house up to 200 learners. Security upgrades are underway to ensure student safety,\" said Reverend Samutereko. He confirmed that schools under the Diocese are adhering to the government's fee policy, allowing parents to pay in local or foreign currency, and emphasised that learning was progressing well despite the accommodation issues.",

      • "content": "Three airtime vendors from Mutare have appeared in court facing allegations of stealing US$54,863 through a sophisticated EcoCash airtime scam after allegedly discovering a system loophole that allowed them to transfer airtime without funds being deducted from their accounts. The accused - Marvelous Nyamutamba (41), Mitchelle Nyamutamba (28), and Panashe Muhonde (29) - are all related and were hauled before Mutare magistrate Mr Xavier Chipato on Friday. They are being charged with theft as defined under Section 113(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23]. Representing the State, Mr Chris Manyuku told the court that between January and April 2025, Marvelous Nyamutamba discovered that when she transferred airtime through EcoCash, her balance remained unchanged while the transactions went through successfully. Upon realising this glitch, she reportedly teamed up with her two relatives to exploit the loophole. The prosecution revealed that Marvelous conducted 312 airtime transfers worth US$39,595. Mitchelle allegedly followed suit, carrying out 260 similar transactions that totalled US$14,282. Panashe Muhonde is said to have taken advantage of the same vulnerability to make transactions amounting to US$986. The offence came to light after Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd, which operates the EcoCash platform, conducted an internal audit and discovered irregularities in airtime purchases. This led to the blocking of the affected EcoCash lines and the matter being reported to the police. All three suspects were arrested and detained over the weekend. They appeared in court where they were granted US$150 bail each on Wednesday. As part of their bail conditions, they were ordered to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with witnesses while the case is ongoing. The trio is expected back in court on May 28. Econet is said to be tightening its system controls following the breach, as investigations into the full extent of the glitch and possible accomplices continue.",

      • "content": "Rusape Town Council has resolved to suspend its Head of Engineering Department, Engineer Charles Chindenga, over allegations of incompetence. The decision, which was ratified during a special full council meeting on Wednesday, has elicited mixed reactions among residents, some expressing doubts about the motivations behind the suspension. Engineer Chindenga was handed his suspension letter on Tuesday afternoon by Town Secretary Solomon Gabaza in the presence of eight councillors. The engineer reportedly refused to accept the letter in person, prompting the council to send it via email. Efforts to obtain comments from key council officials including Rusape Town Council chairman Councillor Lovemore Chifomboti, Town Secretary Mr. Gabaza, and council spokesman Mr. Lloyd Makumana were unsuccessful, with calls and messages going unanswered. Engineer Chindenga confirmed his suspension but declined to discuss the allegations or the reportedly toxic working environment at the council, stating, \"I am sure you are aware of the history surrounding this situation,\" before refusing further comment. This is not the first time Engineer Chindenga has faced legal troubles linked to his work at the council. Over the past four years, he has been arrested twice in relation to his duties, though courts cleared him on both occasions. According to sources familiar with the matter, the council accuses Engineer Chindenga of distancing himself from critical road construction projects along the Mutare-Harare Highway. The works, connected to the commercial stands growing along the highway, were reportedly transferred from the Engineering Department to the Planning Department after he insisted on adherence to Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development standards, citing concerns over proper road servicing and safety requirements. Several councillors and council officials reportedly own stands along this highway stretch, raising suspicions of conflict of interest and claims of victimisation against Engineer Chindenga. When the engineer requested to be excluded from signing off on road designs due to these conflicts, the council approved the move, and work proceeded under Town Planning's authority. Additional accusations against Engineer Chindenga include failure to construct a drainage system in the Vengere area, which he attributed to lack of resources and a demoralised workforce affected by unpaid salaries. An insider within the council highlighted the wider financial challenges facing Rusape Town Council, noting that blaming Engineer Chindenga alone ignores systemic issues affecting service delivery. \"Council is financially strained and struggling to execute projects across departments. The Engineering Department is not the sole area impacted. Even refuse collection under the Housing Department is hampered by shortages of fuel and truck spare parts,\" the source said. Residents fear that the suspension could trigger costly legal battles, a recurring issue for the council. Rusape Town Council has a history of terminating employees on questionable grounds, only to lose subsequent cases and incur substantial payouts. Mr. Stanford Nyaundi, a local resident, welcomed efforts to improve service delivery but cautioned against wasting public funds on internal conflicts. \"Service delivery must improve, but we know that workplace politics have long affected the council. Employees have been dismissed on flimsy grounds, and the council ends up paying in court. We urge the council to follow due process and avoid using residents' money to settle personal vendettas. Our councillors should focus on protecting residents' interests instead of getting involved in executive disputes,\" Mr. Nyaundi said. The suspension of Engineer Chindenga shines a spotlight on the challenges facing Rusape Town Council, underscoring the need for transparency, due process, and sustainable solutions to the municipality's service delivery woes.",
