      • "content": "South African media personality Minnie Dlamini rejected MacG’s apology with an official statement. Over the years, they’ve clashed publicly, with each encounter intensifying. Their latest feud exploded after MacG made an offensive comment following Minnie’s breakup with businessman Brian Monaisa. During an episode of Podcast and Chill, MacG made a vulgar remark implying Minnie’s private parts “must be smelling.” The statement sparked outrage across social media. Fans demanded accountability, and women’s rights groups condemned MacG’s behaviour. The fallout prompted MacG to issue a public apology on his podcast. But Minnie, unimpressed, announced she would be taking legal action against him.Minnie Dlamini statement. image via Instagram @minniedlaminiMinnie Dlamini rejects MacG apology. The actress swiftly rejected MacG’s apology. In a powerful statement, she emphasised the deep hurt his words caused. “As a public figure and a mother, I must act,” Minnie declared. She added that her action was not just for herself but for all women whose dignity gets attacked for content. The comment hit her hard as a woman, sister, and professional. She said the insult wasn’t entertainment, it was defamation. Minnie announced she would continue pursuing legal recourse. Her fans stood by her, praising her courage to confront public humiliation with legal strength and an unwavering commitment to justice. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Minnie Dlamini (@minniedlamini)MacG’s apologyMacG took to his Podcast and Chill platform to issue a heartfelt apology. “I want to apologise to all the female chillers and women in South Africa,” he said. He stressed that offending anyone was never his intention. MacG added, “We never say things to offend people.” He also extended an olive branch to Minnie. “You are welcome on the show,” he offered. MacG expressed that since the issue began on the podcast, it should end there too. He called for peace. However, his words failed to repair the damage, as Minnie remained firm on seeking justice through legal channels. • "content": "Conrad MupesaMashonaland West BureauPOLICE in Mamina are hunting for a murder suspect who allegedly fatally struck his drinking partner with a wooden log following a misunderstanding.Simbarashe Bimha of Madzamba Village, under Chief Murambwa in Mamina, is being sought in connection with the murder of Knowledge Kwenda (44) on May 3, 2025.Mashonaland West Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera said circumstances surrounding the incident are that Kwenda, who was from the same village as Bimha, left his home and proceeded to Chizinga Business Centre, Mamina.“While at the business centre, the two started drinking beer together. The two had a misunderstanding when Bimha refused to buy beer,” he said.“Bimha slapped Kwenda once on the face. This did not go well with Kwenda, who left the business centre and went home.”The suspect later followed the deceased in anger, took a wooden stick from a mopane tree and struck him all over his body, leaving him unconscious in Musinambi River. The body was found the following day by Amon Masango (31) from Madza Village, who made a report at ZRP Mamina.Police attended the scene and observed that the body had bruises all over before conveying it to St. Michael’s Hospital for post-mortem.Insp Kohwera said police were concerned with the surge in murder cases, most of which are a result of petty issues.“People must value the sanctity of life and avoid resorting to violence when they encounter misunderstandings,” he said.He called for anyone with information about the suspect to report at any nearest police station. The post Beer binge ends in tragedy appeared first on herald.",

      • "content": "Theseus ShambareTHE Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) is urging all tobacco farmers to complete destruction of all living tobacco plants before the May 15 deadline. The board called for the total destruction of the plants since partial or improper destruction would have a detrimental effect, such as fuelling pest infestations and depleting soil fertility. The recommended method involves cutting the stems, burning them and then ploughing or disking the field to remove roots.“The May 15th deadline is fast approaching and we urge all growers to take immediate action,” said TIMB spokesperson Ms Chelesani Moyo-Tsarwe.“Cutting or slashing tobacco stalks will not suffice. This only encourages regrowth, creating ideal conditions for pests and diseases to thrive and threaten future harvests.”The TIMB stressed the necessity of uprooting the entire tobacco plant, including the root system, to effectively prevent pest and disease proliferation and preserve soil health.“These remaining shoots continue to draw vital nutrients from the soil, negatively impacting the productivity of your land for the next crop. Complete removal is the only way to protect your investment and ensure sustainable farming,” she said. The Plant Pests and Diseases Act [Chapter 19:08] requires that tobacco stalks be destroyed by the 15th of May every year. For contravention of the regulation requiring the destruction of tobacco stalks by the specified date or prohibiting the planting of tobacco plants between specified dates, there are consequences to the farmer or the contractor. If 10 percent of the contracted farmers are non-compliant, the responsible contractor will be penalised or suspended from operations until they comply fully. Therefore, no contractor will contract a farmer who has not destroyed their tobacco stalks.Any grower who has not destroyed tobacco stalks and has been contracted shall be de-contracted from that contract scheme.TIMB and Ministry of Lands officers are inspecting all fields and compiling lists of all non-compliant farmers.Added to that, for the first offence, the farmer will pay a fine not exceeding US$100 or local currency equivalent for each hectare or part thereof in respect of which the offence is committed or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year or to both such fine and such imprisonment. For a second or subsequent conviction, a fine not exceeding US$200 or ZWL equivalent for each hectare or part thereof in respect of which the offence is committed will be imposed or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or to both such fine and such imprisonment. The post Farmers urged to destroy tobacco stalks appeared first on herald.",

      • "content": "Prosper DembedzaHerald CorrespondentTHE trial of the owners of Eastwind Trust, Rodgers Pote (43) and Trymore Arineshito (39), who are facing charges of contempt of court and carrying out development without approval on an illegal settlement, hit a brick wall today after their lawyer failed to attend court. This prompted the magistrate to defer the matter to May 30 for trial continuation.During the previous sitting, a witness, Mr Jason Pasade, told the court that the two were disowned by Harare City Council’s director of housing in an affidavit. He said Arineshito and Pote were ordered by the High Court to vacate the premises but defied the order.Mr Pasade produced an affidavit written by the city’s director of housing Mr Addmore Nhekairo, in which he said he never allocated them any land.He said he knew the accused persons not only in connection with this case but also as land barons at Melfort Farm, Ruwa.Mr Pasade said in 2020, his company agreed to develop land on behalf of the Freedom Fighters Development Trust. He said his company started to carry out development with roads constructed while most infrastructure was already at an advanced stage. However, the accused persons started illegally selling and allocating stands in the area. Mr Pasade’s company went to court and acquired a High Court order giving the authority to remove the illegally settled people. The accused persons did not vacate the stands contrary to the court order. • "content": "Raymond JaravazaTHERE was drama and panic at a Bulawayo nightclub when a man walked in strapped with what looked like a real gun, only for cops to discover it was a toy!Tafadzwa Mugova, a 28-year-old unemployed man from Old Magwegwe, was arrested last Sunday night after bouncers at the nightclub caught him trying to sneak in with a metal pellet gun tucked away like a hitman on a mission.Fearing the worst, the nightclub security swiftly called the cops who rushed to the scene.“Police received a report that a man had been found in possession of a gun whilst trying to enter a nightclub in Old Magwegwe. The suspect was apprehended by security during a routine search,” confirmed Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele. On closer inspection, officers found the weapon was in fact a pistol-sized pellet gun, complete with a magazine and one pellet ball.Asked to explain himself, Mugova told police he wasn’t up to anything sinister. He claimed he was only there to look for his brother who had the house keys and that the toy gun was a souvenir from the Harare Agricultural Show.Police weren’t convinced and slapped cuffs on him right there.Investigations are still ongoing, and Mugova remains in police custody. • "content": "Business ReporterGOVERNMENT’s decision to eliminate tariffs on United States imports could lower domestic prices while businesses importing US capital goods and technology may incur reduced operational expenses, according to an analysis by the National Competitiveness Commission (NCC).The elimination of all tariffs on products originating from the US followed the imposition of an 18 percent reciprocal tariff by Washington on Zimbabwean exports. Before the suspension, Zimbabwe had maintained a 35 percent tariff on US goods entering the country. The Government argues that the move aims to stimulate US imports, signalling a commitment to “equitable trade and enhanced bilateral co-operation” despite the current world trade tensions caused by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs policy.According to the analysis, local businesses importing capital goods, machinery and technology from the US stand to gain from the reduced costs, potentially boosting competitiveness and allowing them to offer attractive pricing.Cheaper access to US technology could also contribute to the modernisation of Zimbabwe’s industries, aligning with national development strategies.Furthermore, the elimination of tariffs might spur market expansion, encouraging local firms to diversify their offerings and explore new avenues for growth, both domestically and internationally.Increased access to high-quality US goods and technology may also drive product innovation and attract foreign direct investment seeking to capitalise on lower import costs.“Eliminating tariffs and reducing the cost of imports may encourage business firms to diversify their product lines, possibly leading to new market opportunities both domestically and in export markets, which enhance overall business competitiveness,” said the NCC.“Product diversification enhances business competitiveness by reducing reliance on a single revenue stream, mitigating market risks and capturing new customer segments.“By expanding into complementary products or markets, for instance, a sugarcane farmer producing ethanol or molasses, businesses leverage existing resources, improve resilience to price fluctuations and capitalise on emerging opportunities.“Diversification also fosters innovation, strengthens brand value and creates economies of scale, giving firms an edge over rivals in dynamic markets like Zimbabwe’s agribusiness sector.”While these benefits are anticipated, the NCC’s analysis highlights significant risks associated with this policy shift. The commission warns of potential “negative impact on domestic industries and a potential decline in Government revenue.”The post US imports tariff removal may reduce domestic prices-study appeared first on herald.",

The burial will be in Bulawayo, but the final location will be announced soon,” said Sibanda. In her final days, Virginia’s family made a desperate public plea for help to cover soaring medical bills after a surgery that cost US$15 000.Her late husband Rahman was given a hero’s send-off at Lady Stanley Cemetery, reserved for Bulawayo’s most distinguished citizens. It remains to be seen if the city will honour Virginia in similar fashion. The city mourns once again—another chapter closes in a football dynasty filled with love, legacy, and now loss. The post HEARTBREAK IN HIGHLANDERS FAMILY! • "description": "Addis Ababa’s willingness to work with regional rivals in the Middle East shows its practical approach to foreign relations.",
      • "content": "Ethiopia and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 6 May 2025. Under it, their national police agencies will cooperate on security and intelligence. This will include combating cross-border crime, sharing intelligence and building capacity. They will also share experiences and training. For Iran, the MOU marks a significant step towards strengthening relations with a regional power that’s strategically located in the Horn of Africa. Tehran has been using its security apparatus and military capabilities to establish and expand political and economic ties with countries in Africa. This has included drone transfers to the Ethiopian government that helped it turned the tide of the Tigray war, a separatist struggle in the country’s north that took place from 2020 to 2022.Iran has also supplied the Sudanese army with surveillance and combat drones. These have been used against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Sudan’s ongoing civil war.The agreement is important for Ethiopia for two reasons. Firstly, it’s likely to enable the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa to combat ethnic militias more effectively. It faces increasing internal instability, including tensions with hostile factions of the separatist Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Secondly, the agreement comes after a meeting in Addis Ababa between the Ethiopian police chief, Demelash Gebremichael, and a delegation from Iran’s regional rival, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exchange concentrated on investigating and extraditing cross-border criminals. Addis Ababa’s willingness to work with regional rivals in the Middle East shows its pragmatic approach to foreign relations. Ethiopia needs all the friends it can muster as an embattled and weakened state. Since the Tigray war, it has battled the rise of ethnic militias and confronted economic adversity. It is also facing renewed hostility with neighbouring Eritrea. What Iran stands to gainSince 2016, Ethiopia has been a gateway for Iran to gain a foothold in the Horn of Africa. That year, other countries in the region severed relations with Iran. This followed Tehran’s disengagement from sub-Saharan Africa under Hassan Rouhani, who served as president from 2005 to 2013, and his prioritisation of a nuclear deal with the US. The severing of ties was also a byproduct of geopolitical pressure exerted by Saudi Arabia and the UAE on countries in the region. The Middle Eastern states wanted to reduce, if not eliminate, Iran’s presence in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea to limit its support for Houthi rebels in the ongoing Yemeni civil war. Read more: Iran's intervention in Sudan's civil war advances its geopolitical goals − but not without risks Ethiopia was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to establish relations with Iran during the 1960s. It was also one of its top trading partners on the continent before and after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Strategically and ideologically, this special relationship was based on the pro-western and anti-communist stances of their monarchs: the Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who ruled from 1941 to 1979, and Emperor Haile Selassie, who was in power from 1930 to 1974. After the revolution, Iran-Ethiopia relations revived under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who served as Iranian president from 2005 to 2013. He pursued an active Africa policy to mitigate Iran’s international isolation and circumvent US sanctions. After Rouhani initially downgraded these relations, they were renewed during his second term. This followed US withdrawal from the nuclear deal. Relations firmed when Ebrahim Raisi, who served as Iranian president from 2021 to 2024, delivered military drones and other aid to Addis Ababa during the Tigray war. What’s in it for EthiopiaEthiopia is facing increasing instability and uncertainty. The Tigray war has depleted the state’s resources. There is an economic crisis caused by rising inflation and unemployment.Addis Ababa continues to confront ethnic tensions. Hostile factions of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front remain. It also faces tensions with the Amhara Fano militia, which initially fought alongside the government against Tigrayan forces. Forced disarmament policies and ongoing land disputes caused the militia to take up arms against the government. Read more: Somaliland-Ethiopia port deal: international opposition flags complex Red Sea politics Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed also faces growing opposition and resistance from his own ethnic group, the majority Oromo, and their Oromo Liberation Army. The reason for their discontent is Abiy’s imposition of centralised rule on their regional state within a federal system. The security and intelligence cooperation with Iran could allow Addis Ababa to combat ethnic militias more effectively. It would also enable Ethiopia to prepare for another possible war against neighbouring Eritrea. Ethiopia and Eritrea normalised relations and fought together against Tigrayan forces. However, tensions between the two countries have been brewing again. These have been triggered by two factors. First, the conditions of the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement caused Eritrea to maintain forces inside Ethiopia. Second are the ambitions of Addis Ababa to acquire a Red Sea port in Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia. Eritrea has supported Somalia’s opposition to the deal. Regional power gamesThis isn’t the first time that Ethiopia has tried working with two regional rivals – Iran and the UAE. The UAE is also among its top trading partners, along with Saudi Arabia. In 2016, Ethiopia was the only country in the Horn of Africa that didn’t cut ties with Iran, though it was under pressure from the UAE and Saudi Arabia to do so. The decision was taken by Abiy’s predecessor, Hailemariam Desalegn, whose term ran from 2012 to 2018.During the Tigray war, Ethiopia received military drones and other assistance from Iran and the UAE, alongside Turkey. The civil war in Sudan has presented an even more complicated story. Ethiopia has vacillated between engaging with the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces at different points in the conflict. For its part, Iran has supported the Sudanese army. The UAE has backed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen its security ties with Iran and the UAE show a unique case of convergence between regional rivals that have otherwise remained on opposite sides of conflicts in countries like Yemen and Sudan.Eric Lob does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.",

      • "content": "Nokuthaba Brita NcubeZimpapers Business HubGOVERNMENT has outlined key initiatives to revive the mothballed Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (Zisco), a critical operation in Zimbabwe’s quest to accelerate industrialisation and grow the economy.Once the largest steel maker in Southern Africa, Zisco ceased operations in 2008 due to a combination of factors, including hyperinflation, corruption and mismanagement. The closure resulted in significant economic and job losses. At its peak, Zisco produced 1,2 million tonnes of steel per year and employed more than 4 500 people.Several initiatives, including collapsed investment deals with Global Steel Holdings of India and Esser Africa, have failed to yield the desired turnaround objectives. However, the iron and steel sector remains critical for economic growth and development, including construction, automobile and other manufacturing sub-sectors.Industry and Commerce Minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu told Parliament recently that the ministry was already implementing the action plan agreed at the iron and steel indaba last year. The minister indicated that some of the resolutions pertain to the revival of Zisco through promoting synergies with Chinese firm Dinson Iron and Steel Company, which commenced production last year.He said the start of production at Dinson Iron and Steel Company last year presented a unique opportunity to build synergies with the existing Zisco plant and other downstream industries. This comes as the Government is close to signing a Memorandum of Understanding with two potential investors in a development expected to create healthy competition in the local steel industry. He further noted that key initiatives were being undertaken as the iron and steel sector was at the core of re-industrialisation efforts to boost economic growth and create jobs.“The first one is the reviving of the wire mill plant at Lancashire Steel, which will see the manufacturing of wire rods, drawn wire, weld wire, barbed wire, as well as galvanised wire,” said Minister Ndlovu. In addition, it is expected to create more than 20 jobs and provide wire-related products to both up and downstream industries, and generate revenue for the company.Minister Ndlovu said the second initiative entailed establishing a limestone beneficiation plant at Buchwa Iron and Steel Company to manufacture burnt lime, aggregate stones and mill limestone.“We had Kuvimba, which had a management contract that has since been terminated owing to non-performance by the contractor.“This, therefore, means that the Zisco board and management have regained urgency to manage and control their affairs, and we welcome this development at this critical juncture,” he said.Zisco is mobilising resources to revive one of its kilns for limestone beneficiation into burnt lime.Dinson produces pig iron and steel billets for export and will soon start the second stage of producing hot-rolled wires and rolling bars.Minister Ndlovu said Dinson had agreed in principle to leave certain types of steel products to be produced by Zisco. These include shafts, wire, beams, angles and flat sections.Zimbabwe is estimated to hold over 30 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves, positioning it as a critical player in global steel production.Despite these resources, its steel manufacturing capacity declined after the collapse of Ziscosteel. The post Zisco revival plans in motion appeared first on herald.",

      • "content": "The issuance of title deeds to A1 and A2 farmers, a policy introduced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa last year, is being carried out in full compliance with Zimbabwe's Constitution, Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement, Dr. Anxious Masuka, confirmed during a National Assembly question and answer session last week. Dr. Masuka explained that the government's decision to issue new title deeds stems from the fact that the country's Constitution, adopted in 2013, rendered the old titles held by former white commercial farmers before the fast-track land reform program obsolete. He pointed out that under the Constitution, land acquired by the State becomes State property, and once the land is alienated, a new title deed is issued. \"The State has taken the position to alienate State land for value. The title that is being given is a new title, and there is no reference to the old title, which was rendered obsolete and no longer has value. It is this new tenure document, the title deed, that is issued,\" Dr. Masuka said, urging Members of Parliament to familiarize themselves with the relevant sections of the Constitution (289, 293, and 295) that govern the issuance of such titles. The minister reiterated that the title deeds issued to farmers serve as proof of ownership and are aligned with the country's legal framework. He emphasized that the new titles explicitly indicate that it is the government of Zimbabwe, under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, that is selling the land to beneficiaries. Dr. Masuka also urged A1 and A2 farmers to take advantage of the policy and apply for their title deeds. The government's aim, he explained, is to provide security of tenure to farmers and enable them to access financing to support their agricultural operations. \"The experience we've had over the years is that financial institutions did not readily accept 99-year leases or offer letters as security of tenure. It is in this context that the President made the revolutionary step to grant the issuance of title deeds. Title deeds are the ultimate tenure documents, and with consultations from banks, they will be able to take these as collateral,\" he added. As part of the ongoing rollout, Dr. Masuka highlighted that five banks are currently working within the Department of Lands at a one-stop center to offer mortgages for farmers seeking to purchase land or receive support to improve productivity. He expressed hope that more banks will follow suit and urged farmers who have already received title deeds to utilize them to access necessary funding. As of the end of March 2025, over 13,000 farms had been surveyed and were eligible for title deeds, with more than 2,500 farmers already issued with the new documents. The issuance of title deeds marks a significant milestone in the government's efforts to empower local farmers and promote agricultural development, ensuring that beneficiaries have the legal security to access finance and improve their productivity.",

      • "content": "Jailed businessman Moses Mpofu is expected to return to court today for a ruling on his bail application concerning new fraud charges. Mpofu, along with his wife Nobukhosi and his brother Vusumuzi James Mpofu, who are co-directors of Synlak Private Limited, are facing the charges in connection with a project funded by a €350,500 grant from the European Union. Both Nobukhosi and Vusumuzi have been released on bail set at US$800 each, but Mpofu remains in custody pending the court's decision on his bail. The allegations stem from the Mbare biogas project, which aimed to design and construct biogas digesters and install a biogas generator for the City of Harare. In March 2015, the City of Harare issued a tender for the project, which included specific payment terms. Synlak, under Mpofu's leadership, submitted a bid that affirmed their commitment to these payment terms, stating that payment would only be requested after installation and commissioning of the project. Following a technical evaluation, the contract was awarded to Synlak. However, after the contract was signed, Mpofu and his associates allegedly requested an advance payment of US$186,116, despite having previously pledged that the project would be completed before any payment claims could be made. It is further alleged that Mpofu and his accomplices issued a false invoice demanding an advance payment of US$465,290, falsely claiming that the project had been completed. Despite the absence of necessary completion certificates, payments totaling US$415,290 were made to Synlak's accounts. These funds were then reportedly withdrawn for unauthorized purposes. Mpofu's court appearance today is pivotal, as it will determine whether he will be granted bail while facing these serious charges. The case is being pursued by the State, represented by acting town clerk Mr. Mabhena Moyo, and is expected to bring further scrutiny to the business dealings of Mpofu and his associates.",

      • "content": "The import ban on vehicles older than 10 years, which came into effect in January 2022, is part of Zimbabwe's strategy to protect and revitalize the country's motor manufacturing industry, which has been struggling due to competition from cheaper imported used cars. Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Nqozitha Ndlovu made the remarks last week in the National Assembly while responding to questions from legislators during the question-and-answer session. Minister Ndlovu explained that at its peak in the 1990s, the local motor industry employed more than 70,000 workers. However, the sector has witnessed an 80 percent decline in employment across its sub-sectors due to stiff competition from the influx of second-hand vehicles. \"At its height, the automotive sector was the cornerstone of Zimbabwe's manufacturing industry, but over time, it has faced severe challenges,\" said Minister Ndlovu. \"Currently, it is operating below five percent capacity utilization compared to 90 percent in its prime.\" The Minister's comments came in response to concerns raised by Hwange East legislator, Mr. Joseph Bonda (CCC), who questioned the import ban at a time when local motor manufacturing was not fully functional to meet demand. Minister Ndlovu explained that the government's decision to phase out the importation of vehicles older than 10 years by 2030 is aimed at stimulating the local industry. The policy aims to boost the number of units sold annually, which used to be around 20,000 before the sector's decline. By protecting local manufacturers, the government hopes to create jobs and support Zimbabwe's broader economic goals, as outlined in the National Vision 2030. \"In the 1990s, the motor industry employed more than 70,000 people, and these jobs spanned various industries, including tyre manufacturing, with companies like Dunlop being major players,\" said Minister Ndlovu. \"The ban is part of a broader policy initiative to regenerate the local motor industry, and it includes measures such as pre-shipment inspections for imported vehicles to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.\" The Minister also highlighted the financial burden of vehicle imports on the economy, with Zimbabwe spending an estimated US$664 million on vehicle imports alone in 2023. The import ban and other supportive measures outlined in the Zimbabwe Motor Industry Development Policy are designed to create a more favorable business environment, stimulate local manufacturing, and ultimately provide sustainable employment opportunities for thousands of Zimbabweans.",

      • "content": "The government has issued a stern warning to schools that refuse to accept payment in the Zimbabwean Dollar (ZiG), stressing that such actions will result in disciplinary measures. This directive, which comes as the second school term kicks off today, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure adherence to the country's multi-currency regime. In guidelines released yesterday by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, it was emphasized that ZiG remains legal tender for school transactions, alongside other currencies within the multi-currency basket. The ministry's statement made it clear that parents and guardians may pay school fees in any currency of their choice, including the ZiG or USD. However, schools are prohibited from demanding exclusive payment in foreign currency. \"Schools must not demand exclusive USD payments, and non-compliance will result in disciplinary action,\" the ministry said. \"The exchange rate that is determined in the foreign exchange market by banks should guide the pricing of all other goods and services in the economy.\" The statement reiterated that no learner should be excluded from classes, exams, or activities due to unpaid fees. Parents were reminded of their contractual obligations to pay approved fees and levies to support school operations. However, the ministry emphasized that no learner should be denied access to education over financial challenges. The issue of schools refusing to accept ZiG payments was also raised during the Senate's Question and Answer session last week, where Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Angeline Gata, reiterated the legal obligation for schools to accept the local currency. \"Our country is using a multi-currency regime, so it's illegal for any school not to accept the local currency, the ZiG,\" she said. She also encouraged parents to report non-compliant schools to district, provincial, or national offices. In addition to addressing fee payment concerns, Deputy Minister Gata highlighted the ministry's plans to tackle the issue of learner dropouts. An early warning system has been implemented to identify children at risk of dropping out, with factors such as early pregnancies, bullying, long distances to schools, and financial challenges being cited as key contributors. \"With the support of the First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, who initiated the production of reusable sanitary wear, we aim to address some of the barriers contributing to girls dropping out, particularly in disadvantaged communities,\" Gata said. Meanwhile, as the second term opens, the preparations for school have been evident across Harare. Parents have been seen purchasing winter gear and stationery for their children, while vendors along Robert Mugabe Road and Leopold Takawira Street reported a surge in sales of winter apparel and school supplies. For many parents, the availability of winter uniforms at schools has brought relief, as it eases the burden of shopping for additional winter wear. \"It's a relief to know that the school is now providing winter gear, including uniforms. We no longer have to brave the cold, scouring shops for the right winter items,\" said Mrs. Tendai Gondora, a parent from Glen Norah. Additionally, schools have continued to embrace the Heritage-based curriculum, with students like Tinotenda Murimi of Eden Graceland School expressing optimism about its role in preserving cultural identity and fostering national pride. As schools across the country prepare to welcome students for the second term, the government's focus on fee payment compliance and its efforts to combat learner dropouts reflect a broader commitment to ensuring equitable access to education for all Zimbabwean children.",

      • "content": "Employees at Ngamo Safaris in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North, are protesting a controversial decision by management to lease the safari camp to a new investor without following the proper tender procedures. The move has left over 24 workers facing uncertain futures, with many of them having worked for the company for decades. Ngamo Safaris, originally established by the Forestry Commission to generate revenue for conservation efforts in Zimbabwe's indigenous forest areas, is located in an expansive 8,000 square kilometre hunting zone. The safari camp has long been a crucial part of the region's eco-tourism sector. According to Molise Mkandla, a representative from the Tourism and Conservation Workers Union of Zimbabwe, the new investor, Richard Cook Safaris (RC), was granted a lease for the camp last month without a tender process. \"The workers woke up to be told to pack their belongings and vacate the premises within two weeks, a deadline that is fast approaching,\" Mkandla said. \"They were given an ultimatum to either vacate or sign new fixed contracts under the new investor's terms.\" Workers had initially requested a month to make decisions about their futures, but this was reportedly rejected. The sudden shift has caused distress among the employees, many of whom have dedicated decades of service to Ngamo Safaris. \"Some of the workers have been with the company for as long as 30 years. They know no other employer, and now they face losing all their benefits, including pension entitlements,\" Mkandla explained. The new investor, Richard Cook Safaris, has reportedly proposed a nine-month probation period for the affected workers. After this period, they would be evaluated to determine if they will be offered full-time employment. However, this has done little to calm the concerns of the workers. The issue has also raised questions about the process behind the leasing arrangement. Mkandla stressed that while other safari camps, such as Kazuma and Masume, have undergone smooth transitions with due process followed, the leasing of Ngamo Safaris is shrouded in controversy. Sources suggest that some stakeholders are planning legal action over the failure to adhere to proper procedures. Efforts to reach Forestry Commission officials for comment have been unsuccessful. Enock Mandura, the Commission's business development and marketing manager, declined to provide further details, referring inquiries to the Commission's headquarters in Harare. \"I am in a meeting, maybe they are in a meeting that is why they are not picking calls,\" Mandura said. Meanwhile, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Richard Moyo has expressed surprise at the development. \"I will check with the Tsholotsho Rural District Council (RDC) to find out about the issue,\" he said, acknowledging that he was unaware of the move. The leasing of Ngamo Safaris without following due process has sparked outrage among workers, and the controversy continues to escalate, with many questioning the transparency of the arrangement and the long-term implications for both the staff and the local community.",

      • "content": "A Kwekwe woman, Angela Nyathi, has lost her US$50,000 civil damages lawsuit against Electrosales Hardware after alleging that a male employee made sexually inappropriate comments to her while she was with her husband in the store. Nyathi, a prominent figure in Kwekwe and the leader of Vendors4ED, sued Electrosales Hardware and its employee, Herbert Sithole, seeking damages for sexual harassment, defamation, and medical expenses. She had demanded US$45,000 for general damages, US$4,000 for defamation, US$500 for aggravating factors, and US$165 for medical costs incurred due to the alleged harassment. The court heard that the incident occurred on June 5 last year, when Nyathi and her husband, Jabulani Msipa, visited one of the Electrosales branches in Kwekwe. While at the till, Nyathi picked up a water bottle and asked Sithole for its price. Sithole, who was the till operator, allegedly made sexually explicit comments, which Nyathi later described in her lawsuit. Sithole's alleged comments included: \"I am available for you... I can make you hot... I desire you on a weekend at your place or mine... I will undress you... You will remain naked...\" The language used was detailed and highly sexual in nature, prompting Nyathi to take legal action against the hardware store for vicarious liability. However, Electrosales Hardware, represented by prominent lawyer Patrick Nyeperayi, defended the case, arguing that the comments made by Sithole were not within the scope of his duties as a till operator. Nyeperayi contended that Sithole had acted independently and not on behalf of the company, emphasizing that the hardware store had immediately suspended him and conducted a disciplinary investigation, leading to his dismissal. Sithole, in his defense, denied the allegations of sexual harassment, claiming that he regarded Nyathi as a long-time friend and made the comments in a friendly, joking manner. He explained that he had known Nyathi for over ten years and had even bought lunch from her canteen in the past. Sithole suggested that Nyathi's lawsuit was motivated by a desire for financial compensation rather than a legitimate grievance. The court was also informed that Sithole had been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in a public place, later paying an admission of guilty fine. Nyathi, in her testimony, described how the incident affected her health, citing a rise in her blood pressure and the loss of bowel control on the way home. She also alleged that her husband became angry and assaulted her over the incident, leading to further emotional distress. Nyathi said her reputation had been tarnished, and her marriage was at risk as her husband accused her of infidelity. However, Nyeperayi argued that Nyathi's delay in seeking medical attention for her elevated blood pressure indicated that the incident may not have been the sole cause of her health issues. He also contended that Sithole's remarks were not related to Electrosales Hardware's business interests but were personal in nature. In delivering the ruling, Kwekwe Magistrate Itayi Kagwere dismissed Nyathi's claims, stating that Sithole's actions were not connected to Electrosales Hardware's business. \"By no stretch of imagination can it be said that discouraging a customer from purchasing Electrosales Hardware's products can be promoting the business of Electrosales Hardware,\" the magistrate stated. Kagwere further emphasized that Sithole's actions appeared to be aimed at advancing his personal interests rather than serving his employer. The court concluded that Electrosales Hardware had acted appropriately by dismissing Sithole for his conduct. As a result, Nyathi's US$50,000 lawsuit was dismissed, and she left the court without the compensation she had sought.",

      • "content": "Edgars Stores Limited, one of Zimbabwe's leading clothing retailers, has announced a strategic shift toward the low-end market, revealing that 60% of the country's clothing market now falls within the affordable segment. This move is part of the retailer's broader plan to expand its Express Stores, which are aimed at catering to lower-income consumers in response to the growing dominance of second-hand clothing vendors. In January, Edgars outlined plans to launch 20 new Express Stores throughout the year with an investment of approximately US$200,000. These new outlets are expected to serve the economically disadvantaged demographic by offering affordable clothing items priced between US$1 and US$10. The Express Stores, which vary in size from 100 to 150 square meters, have already gained traction in Zimbabwe's informal retail sector. \"The Zimbabwe market is primarily in the informal sector. Our internal research indicates that about 60% of the market is in the low-end segment, which has traditionally been serviced by small players such as open space traders (Kotamayi), runners, and boutiques,\" said Collin Mupatiki, General Manager of Edgars Express Stores. \"As a market leader in the clothing industry, it became imperative for Edgars to recalibrate and focus on this space, which holds significant growth potential.\" The rise of the second-hand clothing market has had a profound impact on formal retailers like Edgars, as they struggle to compete with the affordability and variety offered by pre-owned garments. Despite this, Edgars' decision to focus on the low-end market comes as part of its strategic response to the growing demand for budget-friendly fashion. \"The rapid success of the Express Stores highlights the potential for revenue growth in this space, especially as there is substantial cash circulation in the informal sector,\" Mupatiki added. According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the informal sector is currently circulating at least US$2.5 billion in cash, offering a significant opportunity for businesses catering to this segment. In response to this demand, Edgars plans to sustain its growth through targeted marketing strategies aimed at engaging local communities. These include roadshows, flyer distributions, and promotions through local radio stations. The company is also leveraging digital marketing through social media geo-targeting and SMS campaigns to reach Zimbabwe's tech-savvy youth. Edgars' Express Stores are part of a broader retail portfolio that also includes Edgars Stores, which cater to the high-end market with international fashion trends, and Jet Stores, which target the middle-income market with stylish and trendy clothing for families. Mupatiki emphasized that Express Stores fill the gap by offering affordable clothing for the entire household in the low-end market. \"By the end of fiscal year 2025, we aim to have opened 20 new Express Stores,\" Mupatiki said. \"We also measure our performance based on the number of open stores, sales, and basket size, with a target average spending of US$10 per invoice.\" The company's latest addition, the Shurugwi Express Store, marks another step in Edgars' efforts to expand its retail footprint and meet the needs of the low-income demographic across the country. With the success of its Express Stores and its strategic focus on affordability, Edgars is positioning itself to thrive in the increasingly competitive and price-sensitive Zimbabwean market.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe and the European Union (EU) have marked a significant milestone in their growing economic partnership, with trade between the two entities increasing by 30% and foreign direct investment (FDI) surging by 90% in recent years. At a press conference held during the EU Day celebrations in Harare last week, Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sheilla Chikomo, expressed her excitement about the strong economic ties between the southern African nation and the European bloc. Chikomo highlighted the growing trade and investment, saying, \"It is something to be applauded. I am excited because today is a special day, and in 11 days we will be having a business forum. This is a great milestone.\" The announcement comes ahead of the inaugural European Union-Zimbabwe Business Forum, set to take place in Harare from May 20-22, 2025. The event is organized in partnership with the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA), ZimTrade, and the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI). The forum will serve as a key platform for Zimbabwean and European investors, businesses, and public institutions to explore new investment opportunities and strengthen economic relations between the two regions. EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jobst von Kirchmann, addressed the press conference and emphasized the significance of the forum. \"This is a good moment to bring European companies to Zimbabwe and show them the opportunities here,\" von Kirchmann said. \"I often say, if a European company comes here, it's better to work together with a local company than have an individual investment because you need to understand the local context-language, culture, and market conditions.\" The upcoming forum is expected to focus on three key sectors: agriculture, mining, and renewable energy. These sectors have been identified as areas with substantial growth potential for both Zimbabwe and European investors. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Zimbabwe, with von Kirchmann stating that the partnership was based on mutual respect and a shared vision for a more prosperous and inclusive future. \"Europe is open to cooperation, to fair trade, and to a shared future that benefits us all-a future powered by a thriving EU and Zimbabwe private sector,\" he said. Trade between the EU and Zimbabwe has seen a steady rise, with EU-Zimbabwe trade increasing by over 30% since 2021. Additionally, foreign direct investment into Zimbabwe has surged by 90% over the past three years, a sign of the EU's continued focus on promoting private sector development and economic cooperation. The EU has been particularly supportive of Zimbabwe's efforts to boost infrastructure development and transition to more sustainable, green growth models. This year's EU Day celebrations were held under the theme Global Gateway: Powered by the Private Sector, highlighting the central role of private investments in driving development. The EU's Global Gateway initiative supports sustainable infrastructure, green transitions, and inclusive growth, and is particularly active in Zimbabwe, where the private sector is seen as a key driver of economic progress. The upcoming business forum is expected to strengthen these partnerships, paving the way for increased collaboration between Zimbabwe and the European Union in sectors critical to the country's economic growth.",

      • "content": "Two Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officials, along with five other individuals, have been arrested and brought before the Harare Magistrates' Courts following allegations of smuggling 17 tonnes of T-shirts into the country to evade import duties. The accused include Zimra officials Brian Simbachako and Alford Choruvanda, Jeed Investments director Jethro Mavangwa, Rufaro Nenyasha, a representative from a private voluntary organization (PVO), clearing agent Norest Marara, and truck driver Tony Chisuse. They face charges of conspiring to smuggle the goods into Zimbabwe and evade taxes. The matter was heard before Regional Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, who remanded the accused persons to appear in court again tomorrow for a bail ruling. The complainant in the case is represented by Yulita Toma, a Zimra revenue supervisor. The alleged smuggling scheme began in October 2024 when Mavangwa imported 1,066 cartons of cotton T-shirts from Slovenia. The consignment weighed over 17 tonnes and was initially loaded into a container at Port Koper, Slovenia, on October 31, 2024. The shipment was sealed and dispatched to Beira in Mozambique, with final delivery to Manica Warehouse in Harare. A bill of lading was issued to Mavangwa, listing him as both the consignee and the notifying party. However, when the consignment arrived in Beira on February 13, 2025, Mavangwa is said to have approached CMA CGM, a shipping company, on March 4 to request an amendment to the bill of lading, changing the consignee's details to Rufaro Nenyasha of the PVO. The accused are alleged to have created a fake waybill and altered the shipping details to declare the consignment as \"drip irrigation equipment,\" thereby avoiding import duties by falsely describing the goods. The altered documents listed the port of origin as Xiamen, China, instead of Slovenia, and the consignment was misclassified as agricultural equipment. On March 23, the consignment arrived in Harare at Manica Warehouse, where the seal from Port Koper remained intact. On April 17, Marara allegedly subcontracted a clearing agent, Best Gadzikwa Mawonera, to clear the goods through Zimra. Mawonera processed the documents using the fake bill of lading and invoices, listing the goods as drip irrigation equipment. This allowed the consignment to bypass the import duty requirements. The Zimra officials, Simbachako and Choruvanda, were reportedly responsible for conducting the physical examination of the goods to ensure that the items matched the description in the documents and to determine the correct duties and taxes. However, the accused allegedly cleared the consignment without carrying out any examination, allowing the goods to be taken to Bramfield Farm in Nyabira without paying the required import duty or VAT. The consignment was initially valued at US$78,880.35 or ZWG2,167,608.35 in import duties and VAT, which were not paid due to the fraudulent scheme. As the court proceedings unfold, the accused individuals face serious charges for their involvement in the illicit scheme that cost the state significant revenue. The case highlights the challenges faced by Zimra in preventing smuggling activities and underscores the need for strict oversight in customs procedures. The accused will appear before the court again tomorrow for a bail ruling as the investigation continues into the smuggling operation.",

      • "content": "The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has authorized rural district councils (RDCs) to acquire motorbikes for their councillors as part of a broader government initiative to improve service delivery across rural Zimbabwe. Several RDCs have already secured the motorbikes, while others are still in the process of finalizing tender procedures. Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, recently oversaw the handover of motorbikes in various areas, marking a significant step toward enhancing mobility for councillors in rural wards. The move is part of the government's latest call-to-action plan, aimed at strengthening local governance and ensuring that councillors can effectively reach all areas within their jurisdictions. RDCs that have already received the motorbikes include Zvishavane, Chikomba, Gwanda, Mberengwa, and Mbire, among others. Mberengwa RDC Chairperson Garisai Moyo expressed his gratitude for the initiative, noting that it would greatly improve the ability of councillors to cover their vast areas. \"We appreciate this initiative, and we secured the motorbikes on our own. We need to up the game and enhance the councillors' mobility in their respective wards, resulting in the effective and efficient coordination of developmental projects in all 35 wards,\" Moyo said. Chikomba RDC Chairperson Israel Dhikinya added that some of their wards stretched beyond 50 kilometers, making it difficult for councillors to effectively carry out their duties. \"The motorbikes will enable councillors to efficiently carry out their duties in their respective wards,\" Dhikinya explained. For female leaders like Gwanda Ward 3 Councillor Linda Moyo, the motorbikes have come at an especially timely moment. \"We have a lot of responsibilities that come with being a councillor, such as data collection, sending out information to villagers, identifying developmental gaps, and checking on progress, among others,\" she said. Moyo added that accessing remote areas in her ward had previously been a challenge. \"We had challenges in accessing some areas in our wards, which are large, and some villagers were complaining that we were not visible. But with these motorbikes, the situation will improve,\" she said, emphasizing how the bikes would help bridge the gap between councillors and the communities they serve. Under the new initiative, RDCs are acquiring the motorbikes, and councillors will repay the amounts advanced to them as loans. This scheme is designed to ensure that the motorbikes remain a sustainable resource for improving governance at the local level. As more councils finalize their tender processes, the government's motorbike initiative is expected to significantly enhance the mobility and visibility of councillors, ultimately driving improved service delivery and stronger community engagement across Zimbabwe's rural areas.",

      • "content": "The long-awaited Trabablas Interchange Construction Project is in its final stages and is set to officially open to traffic this May, bringing much-needed relief to motorists and commuters who have long struggled with congestion at one of the country's busiest traffic intersections. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister has confirmed that the multimillion-dollar infrastructure development, designed to ease traffic flow and reduce accidents, will be completed shortly. The Trabablas Interchange is strategically located at the intersection of two major highways linking Harare with surrounding provinces, a critical junction that has long suffered from heavy traffic bottlenecks. The new interchange features a modern flyover, expanded lanes, and improved pedestrian walkways, all aimed at enhancing road safety, efficiency, and overall traffic flow. Construction began in January 2022, with an initial budget of US$88 million, and is now nearing completion. In a statement, the Ministry of Transport confirmed the progress, saying: \"The Trabablas Interchange Construction Project is almost complete. We will be opening it to traffic this May 2025.\" The project is expected to not only significantly reduce travel time for commuters but also stimulate economic activity by improving the movement of goods and services across the region. Local businesses near the construction site have expressed optimism about the anticipated increase in accessibility once the project is complete. With improved infrastructure, businesses expect a boost in customer flow and easier logistics for the transportation of goods. \"Once completed, we expect smoother traffic and better access to our businesses,\" said a local shop owner near the interchange. \"It will make a big difference, particularly in terms of attracting more customers.\" The Trabablas Interchange is part of a broader national infrastructure upgrade plan aimed at improving road networks across Zimbabwe. The Ministry of Transport has announced that similar developments are in the pipeline for other high-traffic zones, as part of the government's ongoing efforts to modernize the country's road systems and ensure safer, more efficient transportation. Contractors are now completing final touches on the project, including road markings, installing traffic signals, and conducting comprehensive safety inspections. The interchange is expected to be fully operational by the end of May 2025, with a grand opening ceremony planned for late May. Government officials and key stakeholders will be present to celebrate the completion of the highly anticipated project. The Trabablas Interchange is expected to be a key catalyst for improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and contributing to the overall growth of Zimbabwe's economy through improved transport infrastructure.",

      • "content": "The ambitious Gwayi-Shangani Dam construction project, seen as a critical solution to Bulawayo's chronic water shortage, may not meet its 2025 completion target due to continued delays in the release of necessary funds by the Treasury. With only eight months remaining until the set deadline, concerns are growing over whether the project will be completed as planned. The Gwayi-Shangani project, which has been under construction since 2004, has faced multiple setbacks and missed deadlines. In 2018, President Emmerson Mnangagwa promised that the dam would be completed by the end of 2019, but budgetary constraints and construction delays caused the project to miss this target. The completion date was then moved to 2022, but that deadline also came and went without the dam's completion. In 2023, the government revised the target yet again, setting the new completion date for the end of the 2023/2024 summer cropping season. However, despite repeated assurances and shifting timelines, the project remains behind schedule. The latest setback comes after Treasury has failed to release funds on time, threatening the project's timely completion. In response to a question raised by Hwange East legislator Hon. Joseph Bonda, Lands Deputy Minister Vangelis Haritatos acknowledged the significant financial challenges plaguing the project. Haritatos indicated that the project's future hinges on the timely release of funds, without which progress will continue to be delayed. \"What needs to be done is that the release of funds has to be done on time. If the releases are not done on time, unfortunately, it is outside of our purview. We can make promises. We want to keep to the timeline. If the money comes, we will do our best,\" Haritatos said. He further emphasized the importance of the project, not just for the Matabeleland provinces, but also for Bulawayo, where the dam's completion will address the long-standing water crisis. The project includes a 276-kilometre reticulation system aimed at providing reliable water supplies to the southern region of the country. Haritatos explained that the project faces financial hurdles that go beyond just the release of funds. Each section of the dam's construction has specific requirements, with every two meters of height needing approximately US$4 million in funding. \"If we are only given, for example, two million dollars, this means no changes at the Gwayi-Shangani Dam. We require four million US dollars for the dam to be raised another two metres,\" Haritatos stated, underscoring the need for substantial financial allocations to ensure progress. He also highlighted the inefficiency of receiving partial funding, noting that \"the releases cannot be in drips and drops. They have to be in multipliers of four million and above\" to meet construction needs. The deputy minister called for urgent action to secure the necessary funding for the project, urging stakeholders and the public to pressure the Treasury to prioritize the completion of the dam. He stressed that the Gwayi-Shangani Dam is crucial not only for the water security of Bulawayo and Matabeleland but also for the broader development of the region. \"The contractors are on-site, and they have every incentive to complete the work. They want to continue and move on,\" Haritatos said, emphasizing that the project's completion was not just a government priority, but also one that directly affects communities. As the project faces uncertainty, the people of Bulawayo and surrounding regions are hoping for swift government action to ensure that the dam, which holds the promise of resolving the city's water crisis, is completed without further delay.",

      • "content": "Industry and Commerce Minister, Mangaliso Ndlovu, has pledged that the government's efforts to reduce the burden of repetitive business licenses will come to fruition within the next six months, a move expected to significantly lower overhead costs for businesses across the country. Speaking in response to concerns raised by Parliamentarians about the high cost of regulatory fees, Ndlovu acknowledged the negative impact these fees have on businesses, particularly large-scale retailers and sectors such as poultry farming, where companies are required to obtain multiple licenses and permits. He confirmed that the government is actively working with the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) to address this issue. \"For years, companies have been burdened with the need to obtain numerous licenses, which results in unsustainable overhead costs. In fact, to operate a single supermarket, one needs up to 25 licenses and permits, each with a hefty fee. This is particularly challenging for large retailers like OK Zimbabwe and TM Pick n Pay, who operate over 50 branches nationwide,\" Ndlovu explained. The Minister highlighted that businesses in the poultry sector also face a similar challenge, with entities such as the National Biotechnology Authority (NBA) and the Agriculture Marketing Authority (AMA) imposing exorbitant fees. The NBA demands an annual registration fee of $6,500, despite not providing any direct service or inspection. The AMA requires a range of quarterly and annual licenses, including a costly $36,400 registration for imported feed ingredients, in addition to charges for Feed Mill Registration and plant quarantine, which total thousands of dollars annually. Ndlovu said that these costs, combined with operating taxes and local authority fees, have created a heavy regulatory burden that hinders business growth and sustainability. \"We identified in our reconstruction and growth plan that the regulatory environment weighs heavily on business viability. To address it, we have the Minister of Finance working with the Office of the President and Cabinet to tackle these issues. They have identified the most burdensome licenses and fees, and in six months, many of these will be eliminated,\" Ndlovu announced. He reassured stakeholders that the process would be carried out with due diligence, ensuring that the changes would result in a more business-friendly environment. \"The exercise is nearing completion, and very soon, announcements will be made regarding which regulations will be eliminated or significantly reduced. Our goal is to promote ease of doing business and reduce the cost burden on our industries,\" he added. This development comes as a relief to Zimbabwean businesses, particularly in light of the recent challenges they have faced due to high regulatory fees. The Minister's assurance that the government is committed to reducing these overhead costs has been welcomed by the private sector, with many hopeful that the changes will lead to a more competitive and sustainable business environment. With the six-month deadline approaching, businesses are now eagerly awaiting the government's next steps in the reform process.",

      • "content": "Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga failed once again to appear before Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Monday, defying expectations that he would explain the gross mismanagement of US$400 million in public funds flagged by the Auditor General's report. The no-show has further strained relations between Parliament and Treasury, with the committee now threatening to issue formal summons through the Clerk of Parliament if Guvamatanga does not appear at a rescheduled hearing set for Friday, May 23. PAC chairperson and Kuwadzana East MP Charlton Hwende confirmed that Guvamatanga had written to Parliament requesting more time to compile documentation linked to the questionable payments. These payments were made directly to suppliers without going through the line ministries, in breach of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), according to the Auditor General. Among the companies that received direct payments from Treasury are Fertiliser Seed Grain (FSG), Ziminya Dam Construction, Ventures Borehole & Exploration, Semwa Dam, Makomo Engineering, Nyika Kanengoni & Partners, and Ren-Form CC - the South African company controversially linked to politically connected businessman Wicknell Chivayo. Hwende said the committee had reluctantly agreed to postpone the hearing until May 23 to allow both Guvamatanga and Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube to attend and provide oral evidence. The committee expects them to clarify both operational and policy issues raised in the damning Auditor General's report. \"The Ministry will now appear before the Committee on Friday, 23 May at 10:00 AM,\" said Hwende. \"We resolved as a committee that the Ministry of Finance permanent secretary needs to appear, and we also resolved last week that the minister must also come because there are policy issues that he must address.\" Hwende added that the minister will be appearing before the committee for the first time, while the permanent secretary's continued absence is now a matter of grave concern. \"The permanent secretary must also appear with his team, together with the minister, and failing to appear, we resolved that the Clerk of Parliament must issue summons in terms of the Standing Orders that same Friday,\" said Hwende. \"We're giving them a very final chance to appear, and if they don't, summons are issued immediately.\" The PAC is also expecting the Ministry of Finance to account for its failure to submit treasury minutes to Parliament, a statutory obligation that has not been met. Lawmakers argue that this persistent non-compliance is eroding transparency and undermining the constitutional role of Parliament in holding the executive to account. The Auditor General's findings have sparked outrage over alleged corruption and mismanagement within the Finance Ministry, with critics accusing Treasury of bypassing accountability mechanisms and enabling irregular payments to politically connected entities. All eyes will now be on Friday's rescheduled hearing - viewed as a final test of Parliament's resolve to enforce financial accountability at the highest levels of government.",

      • "content": "By Nyore MadzianikeA 40-YEAR-OLD bogus employer has been denied bail by the High Court after he allegedly duped four unsuspecting people in Harare’s central business district (CBD) with false promises that he could secure them jobs paying US$30 per hour.George Kativhu, of Makomo in Epworth, was denied bail by High Court Judge Justice Gibson Mandaza, who dismissed his appeal against a magistrate’s decision to remand him in custody until his trial, since he was a flight risk.Kativhu faces four counts of fraud. The State claims that on April 3, 2025, he, along with two accomplices, who are still at large, approached Nanganidzai Tendai at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and First Street. They allegedly offered her a part-time job packaging goods in a shop along Nelson Mandela Avenue.Falling for the ruse, Nanganidzai was instructed to hand over her Tecno Spark 10 cellphone valued at US$75, along with US$75 in cash, under the pretext that these items were prohibited in the shop.Kativhu gave her with an envelope to deposit her belongings and sign. In a deceptive twist, he handed her a different envelope, claiming it contained her valuables.Instead, it held a tile shaped like a cellphone and scraps of paper designed to mimic her original items. After the exchange, Kativhu told Nanganidzai to wait for five minutes while he attended to other matters, but he never returned.Using a similar tactic, Kativhu and his accomplices also defrauded Dumisani Muza of US$400, Munashe Mhondiwa of US$200, and John Saurombe of US$300Ms Karen Kunaka appeared for the State. The post Bogus employers denied bail appeared first on herald.",

      • "content": "Helldivers 2 has released a major new update to the game, which adds new Illuminate enemies, weapon customization and progression, and makes changes to the Superstore. Patch 01.003.000 is out now across PC and PlayStation 5. Arrowhead teased “sightings of other, even larger ships, though details remain unclear on their abilities.” So perhaps there will be more for players to discover once they jump into the game. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 now has weapon customization and progression for the first time. Now, most primary weapons have levels that are achievable by completing missions, which then in turn unlock new attachments obtainable through Requisition. In addition to attachments, players can also unlock patterns for their weapons. Here’s the official blurb: Arrowhead has also unlocked and deployed a stash of patterns for the FRV themed on the Viper Commandos, Freedom's Flame, Chemical Agents, and Truth Enforcers Warbonds. This backlog of patterns unlock on May 15, with the launch of the Masters of Ceremony Warbond. And finally, the Superstore has been changed so items you want are always available, as opposed to players having to wait for items to come back into rotation. Outside new features, patch 01.003.000 brings with it an extensive balance pass, with changes to spread, drag, sway, melee weapons stamina cost, shrapnel spawning, and fire damage. • "content": "Post Reporter THE late former liberation war fighter, Cde Bernard Daniel Bvute, has been described as a disciplined cadre who was committed to the development of Mutasa District and the country at large, both before and after independence.Cde Bvute, who passed on recently, was laid to rest at Tafamombe Village in Mutasa District. He was 61. Cde Bvute is survived by three children and six grandchildren. The late Cde Bvute, whose Chinmurenga name was Cde Kalulu, received military training at Nachingwenya in Tanzania before joining the liberation struggle in Mozambique in 1975. Cde Bvute served in the Zimbabwe National Army after independence, holding different posts as he rose through the ranks. In his speech during Cde Bvute’s burial, acting Mutasa District Development Coordinator, Mr Tedious Beto paid tribute to the ex-combatant’s contributions in steering development. “Indeed, this is a huge blow and an irreplaceable loss, not only to the family, but to the nation at large. He was involved in various programmes such as the drought relief, pfumvudza, establishing of the Hauna Fruit and Vegetable Processing Plant and was also instrumental when First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa launched empowerment programmes for women like Banana4She, Horticulture4She, Pfumvudza4She, Poultry4She and Fisherieds4She here in Mutasa North Constituency.“It is my hope that we shall continue to be guided by his principles, ethics, dedication and hard work. As a nation what we can only do is to protect the legacy that has been left behind by the late Cde Bernard Daniel Bvute,” said Mr Beto. Mr Beto urged communities in Mutasa to uphold the late Cde Bvute’s dream of developing and transforming the district. The post Ex-combatant Bvute laid to rest appeared first on herald.",

      • "content": "In a move that has garnered widespread approval, Amai Eunor Guti, the leader of ZAOGA Forward In Faith Ministries International and widow of the late Archbishop Ezekiel Guti, has declined a substantial donation from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo. The gift, which included a brand new Toyota VXR Land Cruiser 300 series and US$250,000 in cash, was intended as an honour to the late Archbishop Guti. Highly placed sources within the Pentecostal church have confirmed that Amai Guti turned down the offer. The proposed donation caused quite a stir within ZAOGA’s leadership, with some reportedly seeing no issue in accepting the gift. However, Amai Guti has received praise online for refusing what many view as “dirty money” acquired through questionable means. Chivayo made the donation last week, citing the late Ezekiel Guti as a source of support during difficult times. He also stated that the gift was well deserved because Guti “stood with the government at all times of bother.” Chivayo took to social media to announce the gift, writing: “In honor of 100 years of UNMATCHED SERVICE to the body of Christ and in recognition of the SELFLESS COMMITMENT to the Gospel, to charity, to education, to health, and to building a better nation, I am PROFOUNDLY HUMBLED to express my deepest gratitude to my beloved mother, DR. EUNOR GUTI. Ordinarily, I would say, please go and see Farai, but Farai from Faramatsi Motors, Club Chambers Showroom, along 4th Street, will come to you and deliver your 2025 brand new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR, which is fully paid for and ready for delivery, subject to the Church’s Governing Board’s consent. Furthermore, please accept USD250,000 in CASH for fuel and your personal use.” Many implored Amai Guti to turn down the gift, with some church members even pledging to buy the vehicle themselves, arguing that Chivayo’s wealth was “tainted”. A senior church official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained the church’s position: “The church accepts and encourages people to give to their God. But they must do so following strictly the teachings from our father, which are all drawn from the word of God. The word of God is sufficient for us. It is the Kingdom of God with all the treasures in it. We are an indigenous church founded on the principle of righteousness. Our father, Professor Guti, was promoted to glory, but he left us with the Kingdom of God, which has everything that you can think of. The Kingdom of God is enough for us.” A source from the Guti family told New Zimbabwe that the family itself received no direct communication from Chivayo regarding the proposed donation. “As a family, we did not receive any formal communication from Mr. Chivayo. We simply became aware of the offer through social media. The matter is neither here nor there. Honouring Baba Guti should be done in a manner that is pleasing to God. The church will respond in due course,” the source said. Amai Guti is now the second prominent figure to decline such a lavish gift from Chivayo, following in the footsteps of legendary musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo, who also refused both a vehicle and a house. The move stands in stark contrast to other influential figures, including Sungura star Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah, Dorcas Moyo, and Prophet Ian Ndlovu, who have all accepted Chivayo’s gifts, leaving them at the mercy of public scrutiny. Critics have accused those who accepted Chivayo’s gifts of profiting from corruption while ordinary citizens suffer the consequences of failing social services, particularly public hospitals that have become little more than death traps. Amai Guti’s decision has drawn comparisons to Prophet Ian Ndlovu, who recently accepted a substantial gift from Chivayo. Last month, Chivayo gifted Prophet Ian Ndlovu of Divine Kingdom Baptist Ministries with two brand-new vehicles and a substantial cash donation. The gifts, valued at over US$430,000, are intended to support the prophet’s ministry and his wife’s charitable work across Matabeleland province. The gifts include a state-of-the-art 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series VXR for Prophet Ndlovu himself, and a 2025 Toyota Fortuner 2.8D GD6 for his wife, Mrs. Ndlovu, to assist her in her philanthropic endeavours. Chivayo praised Prophet Ndlovu for his unifying role in Zimbabwe’s spiritual landscape. “Through the Divine Kingdom Baptist Ministries, you have stood as a beacon of truth, unity and peace in the body of Christ. Your consistent calls for national prayer for our country’s leadership, regardless of political affiliation, is a mark of political maturity and spiritual integrity. What I admire most is that you never use the pulpit to sow division, but rather you have used it to foster dialogue and reconciliation.” The businessman said that both vehicles worth US$280 000 are ready for collection at Faramatsi Motors in Harare. Additionally, he pledged US$100 000 towards the completion of the prophet’s church building and US$50 000 to support Mrs Ndlovu’s charitable initiatives. Many Zimbabweans expected Prophet Ian Ndlovu to equally turn down the offer, the same way Dr Eunor Guti has rejected Chivayo’s gift. Outspoken preacher Apostle Talent Chiwenga also launched a scathing attack on Prophet Ian Ndlovu, accusing him of compromising his spiritual integrity by accepting lavish gifts from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo. “Ian Ndlovu is now Wicknell Chivayo’s sidechick,” Apostle Chiwenga stated. “Ian Ndlovu inzenza ya Wicknell Chivayo. You can’t quote John Chapter 3 and say ‘a man cannot receive anything except from God’. We know the scriptures that say they are prophesying for a bribe. What you received is not from above. That car is not from above. It came from Zanu-PF. Wicknell Chivayo was very clear, ‘everyone receiving cars from me, they must know it’s coming from Zanu-PF,” said Apostle Chiwenga.",

      • "content": "Gold fell as its haven status was impacted by signs of progress in trade talks between the US and China, along with some relief to geopolitical tensions. Bullion fell as much as 1,8 percent in early trading in Asia to around US$3 265 an ounce, following a weekly gain of 2,6 percent as investors focused on the outcome of upcoming trade talks between the world's two largest economies. The dollar strengthened - making gold more expensive for most buyers - after the US and China both reported \"substantial progress\" following two days of discussions in Switzerland, although neither side immediately announced specific measures. \"We need to see concrete details in the next few sessions and then we can get an idea of how much of a pullback we see in gold,\" said Nick Twidale, chief market analyst at AT Global Markets in Sydney, adding that further unwinding of safe haven flows could see prices fall to around US$3 100 an ounce. \"For anyone shorting gold on the back of better trade deals, the first target to look for will be $3,100.\" While bullion could test the lower end of its current US$3 200 to US$3 400 range if there is continued progress in US-China trade talks, \"dips to and through US$3 200 in gold should be very well supported for an eventual move to fresh record highs,\" said Robert Rennie, head of commodity and carbon research at Westpac Banking Corp in Sydney. Ahead of Monday's selloff, investors had been scaling back exposure to gold. Hedge funds slashed their bullish wagers on the precious metal to the lowest in more than a year on growing optimism surrounding potential progress in US trade negotiations, according to the latest Commodity Futures Trading Commission data. Still, concerns about the economic impact of the tariff war unleashed by the new US administration has helped drive gold about 25 percent higher this year, with prices hitting a record above US$3 500 an ounce last month before losing some ground in recent weeks. The precious metal has also seen support from strong central bank buying and speculative Chinese retail activity. Meanwhile, a ceasefire between India and Pakistan appeared to be holding on Sunday after four days of clashes that brought the two nuclear-armed nations close to a full-blown war. Investors will also be watching as Donald Trump's effort to secure peace in Ukraine reaches a decisive moment, with Volodymyr Zelenskiy challenging Vladimir Putin to engage in talks this week. Spot gold was 1,2 percent lower at US$3 286.65 an ounce as of 7:41 a.m. in Singapore. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was up 0,1 percent. Silver eased, palladium advanced and platinum was little changed.",

      • "content": "Zimbabwe's national cricket team held their first training session in Leicester on Monday, kicking off preparations for a historic one-off Test match against England set to take place at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from May 22 to 25. The landmark fixture marks Zimbabwe's return to the Test arena on English soil for the first time in over two decades, rekindling memories of past contests and signalling a new chapter in the team's red-ball journey. Before the high-stakes Test, Zimbabwe will fine-tune their skills with a four-day warm-up match against a First-Class Counties XI from May 15 to 18 at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester. Speaking after Monday's session, Zimbabwe Head Coach Justin Sammons expressed satisfaction with the team's first full day of activity since arriving in England. \"Good day. Obviously, we had a long journey from Harare to Leicestershire. So, you know, Sunday was a day off in terms of our recovery – Curtly [Diesel], the strength and conditioning coach, had the guys switched on to that,\" Sammons said. \"And then today was our first session out in the field and in the nets. I think it was excellent. Just a nice technical session. Guys are ticking their boxes there. So, yeah, happy with the way it went.\" Despite the demands of international travel and unfamiliar conditions, the coach highlighted the players' enthusiasm and energy as they embraced the opportunity to compete in one of the sport's most iconic settings. \"They've got great energy. The group is really excited. I mean, I don't think you can get anything better than coming and playing Test cricket in England,\" he said. \"So, you know, I think it's just naturally energising the group, and they are super excited to get going.\" The return to England comes as Zimbabwe continues to rebuild its red-ball programme, buoyed by a recent one-all series draw against Bangladesh. Sammons views the upcoming Test as a valuable litmus test for the team's progress. \"You want to play against the best and, obviously, England are one of the best Test teams in the world,\" he said. \"It really gives us a gauge as to where we are and what we need to do moving forward. But the guys have a real belief that they belong.\" With 10 days of training and competitive cricket ahead of the Nottingham Test, including the warm-up fixture, Sammons is optimistic about the team's readiness. \"I think our preparation is excellent. We've got 10 days ahead of us of good prep. So, yeah, I don't think we could ask for anything more than that,\" he noted. \"It's great to get a warm-up game, which is exciting. And then, obviously, as we head into Nottingham, a couple more practices there. So, like I said, from a preparation point of view, I don't think we can complain.\" Following the England Test, Zimbabwe will face South Africa in a four-day match at Arundel from June 3 to 6. The fixture is expected to be a key part of South Africa's build-up to the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's from June 11 to 15. As Zimbabwe settle into their English tour, hopes are high for a competitive showing in Nottingham-and a step forward in their return to the pinnacle of Test cricket.",
