      • "description": "The Swiss bank maintained accounts in Singapore on behalf of US taxpayers who were using offshore accounts to evade taxes and reporting requirements.",
      • "content": "A Credit Suisse unit has pleaded guilty to US charges of helping ultra-wealthy Americans evade taxes and will pay more than US$510 million in fines and other penalties, the US Department of Justice said on Monday (May 5). Credit Suisse Services pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Monday for conspiring to hide more than US$4 billion from the US Internal Revenue Service in at least 475 offshore accounts, it added. It has agreed to pay a total of US$510,608,909 in penalties, restitution, forfeiture and fines, said the department in a press release. The guilty plea stems from the Swiss bank maintaining accounts in Singapore on behalf of US taxpayers who were using offshore accounts to evade US taxes and reporting requirements, according to the release. \"Among other fraudulent acts, bankers at Credit Suisse falsified records, processed fictitious donation paperwork, and serviced more than US$1 billion in accounts without documentation of tax compliance,\" the Justice Department added. \"In doing so, Credit Suisse AG committed new crimes and breached its May 2014 plea agreement with the United States.\" In 2014, Credit Suisse became the largest bank in 20 years to plead guilty to a US criminal charge, agreeing to pay a US$2.5 billion fine for helping Americans evade taxes in a conspiracy that spanned decades. Prior to Monday's settlement, the US Senate Finance Committee in 2023 had found Credit Suisse violated its 2014 deal made with US authorities by continuing to help with the tax evasion and concealing more than US$700 million from the government. UBS said on Monday that Credit Suisse Services pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to aid and assist in the preparation of false income tax returns. UBS said it was not involved in the underlying conduct, which began before its acquisition of Credit Suisse in 2023. The Swiss lender had accounted for the issue as a contingent liability when acquiring Credit Suisse, and expects this to be partially released as a credit in the second quarter. Simultaneously, the bank also expects to record a charge related to the payment in the quarter. In addition to the guilty plea and fine, Credit Suisse Services entered into a non-prosecution agreement that requires it and UBS to cooperate with investigations and affirmatively disclose any information it may later uncover regarding US-related accounts, the Justice Department said.",

      • "description": "With Labour Day falling on a Thursday, many people took leave on Friday to travel over a four-day weekend, and this likely contributed to lower voter turnout.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The lower voter turnout at the recent General Election may have been driven by the timing of the polls and the perceived quality of opposition party candidates in some constituencies, said political observers. The election saw the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secure a landslide victory , with 65.57 per cent of the national vote. The polls, held on May 3, came shortly after the Labour Day public holiday on a Thursday. This meant many working adults took Friday off to enjoy a four-day weekend – a likely reason for increased travel and lower turnout, analysts told CNA. Only 92.47 per cent of voters turned up to cast their ballot, the lowest figure since the 1968 election. Voter turnout in that election – Singapore's first post-independence contest – was 91.87 per cent. Only seven of 58 seats were contested. By comparison, turnout stood at 95.63 per cent in 2020, 93.56 per cent in 2015, and 93.06 per cent in 2011 – the last time, before 2025, that a constituency went uncontested. HISTORIC LOW TURNOUT Voter absence was notably higher in constituencies with affluent populations, a political analyst pointed out. “If you look at the voter turnout by constituency, the ones with the most absentees included Tanjong Pagar GRC, Mountbatten SMC, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and East Coast GRC, all of which have large swathes of affluent neighbourhoods, where perhaps, travel is more rampant than elsewhere,” said Mr Malminderjit Singh, managing director of political consultancy Terra Corporate Affairs. East Coast GRC, contested by the largest opposition party, the Workers' Party (WP), had the fifth-highest absentee rate at 9.22 per cent. National University of Singapore (NUS) associate professor Chong Ja Ian noted that viable opposition candidates tend to boost voter turnout, suggesting that quality matters. Voter paralysis may have also played a part in the more closely fought contests, said Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) research fellow Teo Kay Key. Stuck and unable to decide between candidates, some voters may have simply decided not to make a choice at all. In wards where the ruling party's candidate was seen as much stronger than the opponent, some voters may have stayed home, assuming the result was a foregone conclusion, Dr Teo added. Associate Professor Tan Ern Ser, an adjunct principal research fellow at IPS, added: \"They probably didn't want to vote for opposition candidates they didn’t think much of, neither did they want to vote for the PAP.” REJECTED VOTES There were 42,829 rejected votes in GE2025 – lower than in the last three elections: 45,822 in 2020, 47,367 in 2015, and 44,737 in 2015. A rejected ballot is one that is unmarked or improperly marked and cannot be counted. Assoc Prof Chong said that voters are more likely to vote more carefully and effectively where there are quality candidates from all parties that “can actually run a town council and effectively represent you in parliament”. Dr Rebecca Grace Tan, a lecturer with the NUS political science department, said high rejection rates were often seen in constituencies where opposition parties underperformed. This may indicate voter dissatisfaction with available choices. Jalan Besar GRC, contested by the People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR), recorded the highest share of rejected ballots at 3.13 per cent. It was followed by Ang Mo Kio GRC, which saw a three-way fight between the PAP, Singapore United Party and the People’s Power Party, with 2.72 per cent of the votes rejected. Tanjong Pagar GRC, also contested by PAR, came in third with 2.6 per cent of votes rejected, while Pasir Ris-Changi GRC, contested by Singapore Democratic Alliance, had 2.46 per cent of votes rejected. Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, contested by Red Dot United, was in fifth place with 2.24 per cent of spoiled votes. Some voters may have intentionally invalidated their ballots simply to avoid being removed from the electoral roll, given Singapore’s mandatory voting laws, said political observers. Others may have made honest mistakes, and inexperienced counting agents may have struggled to dispute questionable rejections effectively, said Mr Singh. “A more experienced counting agent may dispute rejected votes more effectively, ensuring they are counted and not rejected,” he said. “With more newer candidates and a higher level of political participation this time, it may not be surprising that there were a higher number of counting agents who were doing this for the first time and thus were less successful in disputing votes that were not clearly marked with an ‘X’.” COULD THEY HAVE FLIPPED THE VOTE? While results in many constituencies were not close enough for absentees or invalid votes to have changed the outcome, some contests were much tighter. In Tampines , the difference between the PAP and WP was 6,379 votes, which is lower than the 9,549 people who did not vote, noted Dr Teo. Similarly in Jalan Kayu , where the margin of votes between the PAP’s Ng Chee Meng and WP newcomer Andre Low was 806, there were 376 rejected votes and 1,832 absentees, she said. These constituencies had the best-performing losing candidates, earning the WP two Non-Constituency MP seats and bringing its total to 12 seats in parliament. “Clearly voters were not aware of the importance of their votes,” said independent observer Felix Tan. Still, analysts cautioned against assuming that all missing votes would have favoured the opposition. “If you extrapolate from the general voting trend we saw this time, they could also have bolstered the PAP's score further,” said Terra Corporate Affairs' Mr Singh. WP chief Pritam Singh himself acknowledged this in post-election comments to the media. “We never assumed that just because there's a lot of support online or on the ground, that it will translate into votes,” he said.",

      • "description": "Gen Z and millennial Singaporeans played a huge role in GE2025 compared to previous editions, both as voters as well as candidates. IPS’ Teo Kay Key lays out why that’s a good sign.",
      • "content": "SINGAPORE: This year, Singapore’s General Election (GE2025) stood out from previous editions in a few meaningful ways: We saw independent candidates obtaining higher vote shares than some political parties with more history and arguably more resources, an influx of podcasts introducing candidates from different parties, and active social media engagement by the political parties, candidates and content creators. With Gen Zers (aged 13 to 28 years old, with those aged 21 and above eligible to vote) and millennials (aged 29 to 44) playing a much bigger role in GE2025, both in terms of reaching the legal voting age or running as candidates, it’s safe to say that we have entered a new norm in political engagement methods. Two main things stand out when it comes to these generational groups: greater political participation, especially in the realm of electoral politics; and shifting voting patterns. GREATER POLITICAL PARTICIPATION This GE, we saw more younger individuals putting themselves up for election – 38 of 90 first-time candidates were under the age of 40 – not just as members of political parties, but also as independent candidates. Many of these newcomers, particularly those from the better-resourced political parties, had also already been engaging in political, community or grassroots work prior to their debut as candidates. The People Action Party’s (PAP) youngest Member of Parliament (MP) – 33-year-old Cassandra Lee of West Coast-Jurong West GRC – came onto the scene with 16 years of grassroots volunteering already under her belt, having started since at the age of 17. Andre Low from the Workers’ Party (WP), also 33, had previously served under Sengkang MP Louis Chua as a secretarial assistant before being fielded as a candidate this GE. Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Ariffin Sha, 28, had founded an alternative news outlet writing about social and political issues at 16 years old. There were just two independent candidates running in GE2025 – Darryl Lo in Radin Mas SMC and Jeremy Tan in Mountbatten SMC. Both of them bucked the usual stereotypes of political independents – rather than the older, angrier variety of “political alternative” voters may be more accustomed to seeing, they are young (28 and 34 years old respectively) and presented their ideas in clear, coherent ways that stood out to some voters. All these put together reflect a trend of Singaporeans becoming politically aware and engaged from a much younger age, and putting these thoughts to action. YOUNGER VOTERS WEIGHING THEIR OPTIONS Going into GE2025, the increased proportion of younger voters, may have caused some apprehension. Back in 2020, the Institute of Policy Studies’ post-election survey found that among voters aged 21 to 29, over half belonged to the “swing” category – meaning they had an eclectic mix of views regarding checks and balances as well as parliamentary representation – while another 30 per cent were in favour of more pluralism in government. But why are younger voters so much more unpredictable than their older counterparts? Gen Zers and millennials are generally considered “digital natives” and have greater exposure to information via the internet, both from traditional media platforms and other sources. Being exposed to a wider range of issues, viewpoints, experiences and ideas has shaped their view of the world they live in, what change they want to see and how they can get involved. Even rally crowds seemed to feature a lot more young faces, something I observed when attending rallies this time round compared to 2015. This is good news for a country’s democratic potential and strength. Citizens becoming more politically aware at a younger age means they will have more time to develop their beliefs about the kind of systems they would like to have in place to govern not just their lives, but that of their families, communities and countrymen. It also speaks to the national education system’s capability for growing young minds to think critically and take action on issues that matter to them. In April, a YouGov survey found that 61 cent of millennials and 70 per cent of Gen Zers were still undecided on which party they would vote for – a much higher proportion compared to Gen Xers and baby boomers. While these findings may have given the impression of indecisiveness in this demographic, GE2025 results point towards more thoughtful voter deliberation over individual choices. The fact that so many were unable or unwilling to commit their vote to one party or another early on shows that voters – younger ones especially – were much more open to looking at what each candidate or party had to offer before making their decision. THOUGHTFUL DELIBERATION VS PARTY LOYALTY When it comes to election results, there also seems to be some impact with the addition of these Gen Z and millennial voters. While the overall PAP vote share of 65.57 per cent looks like a reaction towards the uncertain geopolitical situation and a strong mandate for Mr Lawrence Wong’s first outing as both prime minister and PAP secretary-general, the individual results from various constituencies also provide further nuance. If we zoom in to hotly contested battlegrounds with an estimated larger proportion of young voters aged 45 and below, we can observe different voting patterns based on the contesting opposition parties. Sengkang GRC was retained by WP – with an even higher vote share than in 2020. The WP kept the PAP’s winning margin to under 5 percentage points in Jalan Kayu SMC and Tampines GRC, and just above 10 per cent of votes in Punggol GRC. Sembawang West, contested by SDP’s Dr Chee Soon Juan, recorded a winning margin of under 10 percentage points for the PAP. Compare this to other areas with large proportions of young voters such as Nee Soon GRC and Potong Pasir SMC, which the PAP won with significant margins of 47.62 per cent and 46.71 per cent of votes respectively against Red Dot United and Singapore Progress Party. It’s clear that parties like the WP with a strong branding, clear policy proposals, and candidates who come with more impressive resumes appeal much more to voters compared to those that are less well-known or well-resourced, or that prioritise critiquing the PAP’s policies over spelling out their own proposals. Again, this seems to indicate a more discerning electorate. The nature of voting decision-making has evolved – no longer is it a choice between the ruling party and the opposition as a homogenous bloc. Rather, it’s now a more nuanced contest between different political parties, each with their own voice, brand and offerings. While GE2025 shows PAP retaining its spot as the frontrunner based on the overall trends and the WP holding fast as a strong runner-up in the constituencies it contested, the surprisingly strong showing of young players including WP’s Mr Low and independents Mr Tan and Mr Lo shows that young Singaporeans are intent on making their mark on the landscape of Singapore politics. With more Gen Zers and younger adults entering the field in subsequent elections – whether as voters or candidates – we might see this trend gaining even more traction in the next five years. • "description": "Zhao bounced back from a 20-month ban over a match-fixing scandal to become China's first snooker world champion.",
      • "content": "Zhao Xintong has been hailed as snooker's \"new superstar\" after becoming China's first world snooker champion . The 28-year-old beat Welshman and three-time world champion Mark Williams in stunning style at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre on Monday (May 5). It's the latest chapter in Zhao's remarkable rise and fall story, having received a 20-month ban in January 2023 after an investigation into a match-fixing scandal. Here's what we know about Zhao's journey to sporting glory. PICKING UP THE CUE AT 8 Zhao was born in the Chinese city of Xian, but as a child moved to the metropolis of Shenzhen, just over the border from Hong Kong, when his parents went there for work. An only child, he first became interested in snooker when he was eight years old, after seeing some tables set up outside small stores near his home. As his interest grew, his parents put a snooker table in one of the rooms in their home and made it his practice room. However, they were sceptical about his sporting ambitions and wanted him to study. In 2015, a teenage Zhao told a documentary that he wanted to be like Chinese snooker trailblazer Ding Junhui. Ding, the so-called grandfather of Chinese snooker, won the UK Championship three times and the Masters in 2011. In the 2015 documentary, called \"Becoming Ding Junhui\", Zhao's mother recalls: \"I asked him, when you've finished university, what job will you do? \"He said, 'Play snooker'. He said it very firmly, he didn't need to think about it.\" She said that was the moment she decided to fully support his decision to make snooker his life. Acknowledging the support from his parents, Zhao said: \"I'm the luckiest kid in the snooker world.\" The same programme includes a ringing endorsement from Ding's father, calling Zhao his \"favourite\" player and a \"rare\" talent. SNOOKER’S ROGER FEDERER By his teens, Zhao was beating professionals in exhibition matches, Williams among them. The left-hander followed the trail of Chinese players to Sheffield, where he plays at Victoria’s Snooker Academy, run by Victoria Shi, a 10-minute walk from the Crucible. Realising Zhao’s enormous potential, Shi asked snooker great Ronnie O’Sullivan to lend a hand in mentoring him. The Englishman obliged, practising and dining with Zhao, passing on tips. “He could be the greatest of all time with his talent, his ability – I always say he’s Roger Federer with a snooker cue in his hands,” O’Sullivan said in 2022, as reported by the South China Morning Post. SUSPENSION Nicknamed the \"Cyclone\", Zhao’s outrageous shot-making and calm demeanour marked him out as a future world champion. In 2021, his victory in the UK Championship suggested that day was not far off. However, in 2023, he was one of 10 Chinese players suspended during a corruption investigation over match-fixing. While Zhao was the only one among the players who did not fix matches, he admitted to being a party to another player doing so, and placing bets. He was suspended for 20 months. “I have been thoroughly regretting my ignorance and silliness since being suspended a few months ago,” he said on social media. “I feel ashamed as I disappointed everybody by making a mistake. I just want to say sorry to everyone. “I didn’t make any profit from it, but I paid a heavy price for my foolishness.” COMEBACK Zhao's road to redemption was a gruelling one. After completing his suspension last September, he had to start from the bottom. He returned to playing on the Q Tour, the amateur circuit, and won almost every match, quickly ensuring his return to the pro ranks next season. Due to the suspension, Zhao was required to enter the world championship at the preliminary stage, but he got through four qualifying rounds to join a record 10 Chinese players in the 32-strong competition. By the semi-finals, he was the only Chinese contender left standing. The 28-year-old beat his idol and mentor O’Sullivan 17-7 to reach the final, where he triumphed 18-12 over Williams, who was bidding to become snooker's oldest world champion aged 50. His win made him the youngest world champion since Shaun Murphy, who won at the age of 22 in 2005. \"There's a new superstar of the game,” Williams said. “He just strolls around the table and pots balls from anywhere as if he doesn't have a care in the world.” Millions of Chinese fans were said to have tuned into the final to witness Zhao's coronation. He will start next season at number 11 in the world rankings. \"You see the quality of Zhao Xintong, it's the future and the shape of things to come,\" said six-time world champion Steve Davis. \"Every time anybody put anything up to him, he responded. He's a cool customer. He just takes everything in his stride.\"",

IBM Corporation logo. IBM estimates that over one billion apps will emerge by 2028, putting pressure on businesses to scale across increasingly fragmented environments. This requires seamless integration, orchestration and data readiness. A new IBM CEO study shows that business leaders expect the growth rate of AI investments to more than double over the next two years, with most actively adopting AI agents and preparing to scale them. Yet their pace of investments has led to disconnected technology – and only 25% of AI initiatives have achieved the ROI they expected. IBM is combining hybrid technologies, agent capabilities and deep industry expertise from IBM Consulting to help businesses operationalize AI. \"The era of AI experimentation is over. Today's competitive advantage comes from purpose-built AI integration that drives measurable business outcomes,\" said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO, IBM. \"IBM is equipping enterprises with hybrid technologies that cut through complexity and accelerate production-ready AI implementations.\" Build AI agents in watsonx Orchestrate that work with 80+ leading business applications AI agents are shifting from AI that chats with you to systems that work for you, yet many enterprises will struggle to integrate them across diverse environments, apps, and data. IBM is providing a comprehensive suite of enterprise-ready agent capabilities in watsonx Orchestrate to help businesses put them into action. The portfolio includes: Build-your-own-agent in under five minutes, with tooling that makes it easier to integrate, customize and deploy agents built on any framework – from no-code to pro-code tools for any kind of user.1 Pre-built domain agents specialized in areas like HR, sales and procurement – with utility agents for simpler actions like web research and calculations.2 Integration with 80+ leading enterprise applications from providers like Adobe, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce Agentforce, SAP, ServiceNow, and Workday. Agent orchestration to handle the multi-agent, multi-tool coordination needed to tackle complex projects like planning workflows and routing tasks to the right AI tools across vendors.Agent observability for performance monitoring, guardrails, model optimization, and governance across the entire agent lifecycle.3 IBM is also introducing the new Agent Catalog in watsonx Orchestrate4 to simplify access to 150+ agents and pre-built tools from both IBM and its wide ecosystem of partners, which includes Box, MasterCard, Oracle,Salesforce, ServiceNow, Symplistic.ai, 11x and more. For example, the catalog will include a sales agent for discovering and importing prospects that works with and is available in Salesforce's Agentforce and a conversational HR agent that can be embedded in Slack. Forrester TEI projects 176% ROI over three years by automating integration of apps, APIs, events, and more across hybrid cloud As AI adoption accelerates, integration remains a major challenge. Most enterprises rely on a patchwork of APIs, apps, and systems spread across on-prem and multi-cloud environments – many of which weren't built to work together. IBM is introducing webMethods Hybrid Integration5, a next-generation solution that replaces rigid workflows with intelligent and agent-driven automation. It will help users manage the sprawl of integrations across apps, APIs, B2B partners, events, gateways, and file transfers in hybrid cloud environments. An independent Forrester Consulting Total Economic Impact (TEI) study found that a composite organization representative of interviewed customers who adopted multiple webMethods integration capabilities realized over three years6: 176% ROI, plus unquantified benefits such as ease of use, reduced training costs, and improved visibility and security posture 40% reduction in downtime 33% time savings on complex projects 67% time savings on simple projects This complements IBM's broader automation portfolio, which spans application development and integration, infrastructure automation and technology business management. Integrations with HashiCorp – including Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and Vault for secrets management – will enhance automation across hybrid environments to support secure configuration, consistent policy enforcement, and scalable operations. Tools like IBM Concert Resilience Posture, along with watsonx and Red Hat technologies, give organizations an intelligent, unified way to manage operations and accelerate AI across hybrid clouds. Unlocking unstructured data for generative AI Unstructured data – buried in contracts, spreadsheets, and presentations – is one of the most valuable but underutilized resources in the enterprise. IBM is evolving watsonx.data to help organizations activate this data to drive more accurate, effective AI.7 The new watsonx.data will bring together an open data lakehouse with data fabric capabilities – like data lineage tracking and governance – to help clients unify, govern, and activate data across silos, formats, and clouds. Enterprises will be able to connect their AI apps and agents with their unstructured data using watsonx.data, which tests show can lead to 40% more accurate AI than conventional RAG.8 IBM is also introducing watsonx.data integration, a single-interface tool for orchestrating data across formats and pipelines, and watsonx.data intelligence, which uses AI-powered technology to extract deep insights from unstructured data.9 They will be available as standalone products, with select capabilities also available through watsonx.data – maximizing client choice and modularity. To complement these products, IBM recently announced its intent to acquire DataStax, which excels at harnessing unstructured data for generative AI. With DataStax, clients can access additional vector search capabilities. Further, watsonx is now integrated as an API provider within Meta's Llama Stack, enhancing enterprises' ability to deploy generative AI at scale and with openness at the core. IBM's new content-aware storage (CAS) capability is now available as a service on IBM Fusion, with support for IBM Storage Scale coming in 3Q. This provides ongoing contextual processing of unstructured data to make extracted information easily available to RAG applications for faster-time-to-inferencing. Infrastructure for AI scale IBM is launching IBM LinuxONE 5, its most secure and performant Linux platform for data, applications, and trusted AI – with the ability to process up to 450 billion AI inference operations per day.10 IBM LinuxONE 5's innovations include: IBM's State-of-the-art AI accelerators, including IBM's Telum II on-chip AI processor and the IBM Spyre Accelerator (available 4Q 2025 via PCIe card), to enable generative and high-volume AI applications such as transactional workloads. Advanced security offerings with confidential containers to help clients protect their data and new integrations with IBM's pioneering quantum-safe encryption technology to address quantum-enabled cybersecurity attacks. Significant reductions in costs and power consumption, moving cloud-native, containerized workloads from a compared x86 solution to an IBM LinuxONE 5 running the same software products can save up to 44% on the total cost of ownership over 5 years.11 IBM has also expanded its GPU, accelerator and storage collaborations with AMD, CoreWeave, Intel, and NVIDIA to provide new solutions for compute-intensive workloads and AI-enhanced data. • "content": "ARMONK, N.Y. , May 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the company's annual THINK event, IBM (NYSE: IBM ) is unveiling new hybrid technologies that break down the longstanding barriers to scaling enterprise AI – enabling businesses to build and deploy AI agents with their own enterprise data. The portfolio includes: IBM is also introducing the new Agent Catalog in watsonx Orchestrate 4 to simplify access to 150+ agents and pre-built tools from both IBM and its wide ecosystem of partners, which includes Box, MasterCard , Oracle, Salesforce , ServiceNow, Symplistic.ai, 11x and more. IBM CEO study The IBM CEO study,* which surveyed 2,000 CEOs globally, revealed that executive respondents expect the growth rate of AI investments to more than double in the next two years, and 61% confirm they are actively adopting AI agents today and preparing to implement them at scale. According to the findings, 68% of surveyed CEOs identify integrated enterprise-wide data architecture as critical for cross-functional collaboration, and 72% view their organization's proprietary data as key to unlocking the value of generative AI. However, the research indicates organizations may be struggling to cultivate an effective data environment: half (50%) of respondents acknowledge that the pace of recent investments has left their organization with disconnected, piecemeal technology. In the foreword of the study, IBM Vice Chairman Gary Cohn writes, \"As AI adoption accelerates creating greater efficiency, and productivity gains, the ultimate pay-off will only come to CEOs with the courage to embrace risk as opportunity. Meaning, focusing on what you can control, especially when there is so much you can't. When the business environment is uncertain, using AI and your enterprise data to identify where you have leverage is a competitive advantage. At this point, leaders who aren't leveraging AI and their own data to move forward are making a conscious business decision not to compete.\" \"CEOs are balancing the pressures of short-term ROI and investing in long-term innovation when it comes to adopting AI,\" said Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President and Head of IBM Consulting. \"But we know that organizations that keep innovating, especially during periods of uncertainty, will emerge stronger and be better positioned to capitalize on new opportunities.\" Other key findings include: CEOs face competing pressures of short-term ROI and long-term innovation Surveyed CEOs report that only 25% of AI initiatives have delivered expected ROI over the last few years, and only 16% have scaled enterprise wide. To accelerate progress, two-thirds (65%) of CEO respondents say their organization is leaning into AI use cases based on ROI, with 68% reporting that their organization has clear metrics to measure innovation ROI effectively. Just over half (52%) of CEO respondents say their organization is realizing value from generative AI investments beyond cost reduction. 64% of CEOs surveyed acknowledge that the risk of falling behind drives investment in some technologies before they have a clear understanding of the value they bring to the organization, but only 37% say it's better to be \"fast and wrong\" than \"right and slow\" when it comes to technology adoption. 59% of surveyed CEOs admit their organization struggles to balance funding for existing operations and investment in innovation when unexpected change occurs, as 67% say more budget flexibility is needed to capitalize on digital opportunities that drive long-term growth and innovation. By 2027, 85% of surveyed CEOs expect their investments in scaled AI efficiency and cost savings to have returned a positive ROI, while 77% expect to see a positive return from their investments in scaled AI growth and expansion. CEOs see strategic leadership and specialized talent as essential to unlocking AI value, amid expertise and skills gaps 69% of CEO respondents say their organization's success is directly tied to maintaining a broad group of leaders with a deep understanding of strategy and the authority to make critical decisions. 67% of CEOs surveyed say that differentiation depends on having the right expertise in the right positions with the right incentives. CEOs cite lack of collaboration across organizational silos, aversion to risk and disruption, and lack of expertise and knowledge as top barriers to innovation in their organization. Surveyed CEOs say roughly one-third (31%) of the workforce will require retraining and/or reskilling over the next three years, while 65% say their organization will use automation to address skill gaps. 54% of CEO respondents say they are hiring for roles related to AI that did not exist a year ago. • "content": "In the first 100 days of his second term, US President Donald Trump has shown a willingness to lean on airpower when his administration decides that military force is necessary abroad. So far, the second Trump administration has launched and carried out a weekslong air campaign against the who rule most of Yemen. The president has also threatened direct strikes against should collapse. This turn to airpower for Trump makes sense to me. Airpower is when compared with ground wars, and it usually comes with for those conducting the strikes. This helps explain why US leaders, including Trump as a self-proclaimed “ ,” typically find it attractive. But if the Trump administration is not careful, it could fall into what military strategists informally call the “ .” This happens when the stated objectives of military force are too big for airpower alone to achieve, potentially leading to a face-saving escalation of conflict that could – if history is a guide – draw in ground forces from the US or their local allies. US presidents such as Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all fell into this trap. In Vietnam, the Balkans and Syria, respectively, all ended up with far bigger wars than they bargained for, with consequences for civilian casualties, international peace and damage to America’s reputation abroad. As an and the , I believe the Trump administration is in danger of falling into the airpower trap in Yemen and could potentially do the same in Iran should it elect to use direct force against Tehran. Recognizing this military and historical risk, and opting for some kind of off-ramp from continued airstrikes, might be the best hope the US government has to avoid a further escalation into full-scale war. The limits of air bombardment shows airpower is most effective when it’s used for limited objectives – things like taking out leaders of terrorist groups or degrading rival capabilities – or in for more , like bolstering or overturning governments. Given the sophistication of US airpower, a among American strategists in particular is to think that big strategic gains can be achieved solely by dropping bombs from above. But when airpower alone fails, leaders can feel the pressure to expand the scope of conflict and end up with bigger military commitments than expected. That expanded conflict presaged years of war, with massive humanitarian and political consequences for people in Southeast Asia and America, as well as lasting reputational damage to the US. Worried about US and NATO credibility, Clinton – nearly to the – for the ambitious end of stopping genocide in the Balkans during the early 1990s. Likewise, Obama’s initial airpower-only strategy to “ quickly faltered, leading Obama, under intense pressure at home and abroad, to introduce thousands of ground troops to combat the group’s territorial gains across Syria and Iraq. In each case, relying on airpower alone ultimately failed to meet their objectives. The airpower trap in Yemen There are reasons to believe that conditions in Yemen mean that Trump, too, could be falling into a similar trap. Trump has adopted an airpower-only strategy to “ ” the Houthis, a that all but . The proximate cause of the air campaign, a policy inaugurated by the Biden administration and expanded dramatically by Trump, is to in the Red Sea that the Houthis have disrupted by force to protest Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. The early signs are that this air campaign isn’t going well. Despite since March 15, and the volume of Red Sea shipping remains . Houthi continue. A Israel’s Ben-Gurion airport on May 4. In fact, the on the Houthis and the rapidly growing casualty count from the Trump administration’s bombing campaign appear to be political position in Yemen. In a particularly shocking case, US bombs reportedly , killing and injuring dozens of people. The humanitarian crisis from the brutal bombing campaign by the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis in the late 2010s had a . Airpower played a big part then, too. The Saudi coalition, by the U.S., engaged in some against the Houthis, killing or maiming approximately . Yet despite such overwhelming force, the Houthis kept seizing territory and eventually won the civil war, . They have been the country’s de facto rulers ever since. Now, Trump is exploring options to further escalate to defeat the Houthis. Reports his administration is arming, training and enabling who are loosely affiliated with Yemen’s government in exile to launch ground operations. Between diplomacy and quagmire Proxies are a common tool US leaders turn to when caught in the airpower trap. Sometimes those proxies fulfill American policy objectives, such as the , which helped the US defeat the Islamic State in 2019. Often, US proxies fail on both strategic and humanitarian terms, leading to further escalation, strategic quagmires for the US, and loss of life and political sovereignty for the people under attack. South Vietnam was an instructive example. Riven by corruption, poor governance, weakness and political infighting, the proved so ineffective at fighting the North Vietnamese that Johnson decided to launch a ground war once US airpower failed. Today, the anti-Houthi resistance in Yemen looks a lot more like the South Vietnamese government than the Kurdish YPG. According to a 2025 , a security think tank, the anti-Houthi forces are poorly trained and considered incapable of pulling off victories over the Houthis without major US support. Meanwhile, the consists of an estimated 85,000 fighters, compared with some 350,000 for the Houthis. Absent continuing the air war or escalating it into a more all-encompassing conflict, US officials can still pursue diplomacy in order to try to find a political solution to the Yemen conflict. Despite the Trump administration’s public threats, the US is already negotiating with the Houthis’ main sponsor, Iran. For their part, the Houthis continue to insist that they will stop attacking ships in the Red Sea if the US-backed halts, during the recent Gaza ceasefire. The Trump administration might consider seeking alternatives, such as direct or indirect talks, if it wants to avoid getting stuck in a widening conflict in Yemen. History is full of examples of what happens when airpower takes on a logic of its own.",

      • "content": "WASHINGTON: Former United States Vice President Mike Pence on Monday (May 5) criticised the Trump administration's policy on tariffs and said potential shortages could lead Americans to \"demand a different approach\" from the White House. In a primetime interview with CNN, Pence discussed a range of topics, and criticised his former boss for pardoning nearly all the rioters who had been prosecuted for storming the US Capitol on Jan 6, 2021. In his second term, Donald Trump has imposed wide-ranging tariffs on almost all US trading partners, claiming that other countries adopt \"unfair\" practices and that Washington needs to achieve trade balance with every country. Pence served as vice president to Trump in his first term, but notably broke with the Republican billionaire over Trump's claims that the 2020 election was rigged. Pence said he had \"concerns\" that Trump's tariff policies were \"essentially new industrial policy that will result in inflation, that will harm consumers and that will ultimately harm the American economy\". The former VP appeared to disagree with Trump on the Russia-Ukraine war, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin \"only understands power\". \"If the last three years teaches us anything, it's that Vladimir Putin doesn't want peace; he wants Ukraine.\" Trump's administration has led efforts to secure a ceasefire in the war, with officials often appearing to shift US positions to be more in line with Moscow's on the conflict. Trump has, however, expressed increased impatience with Putin over the stalled talks, with officials suggesting Washington would walk away from the process if there are no tangible results soon. On the pardons for the Capitol rioters, who had stormed the seat of US legislative power in a bid to stop the certification of an election result that saw Trump lose to Joe Biden, Pence expressed disappointment. \"I was deeply disappointed to see President Trump pardon people that engaged in violence against law enforcement officers that day,\" Pence said. \"The president has every right under the Constitution to grant pardons, but in that moment, I thought it sent the wrong message.\" Trump's supporters saw Pence's participation in the certification of Biden's victory as a betrayal, and chants of \"Hang Mike Pence!\" became common at rallies for the Republican. Pence, however, said he was still \"proud of the record of the Trump-Pence administration,\" adding \"we never had a cross word between us until those fateful days at the end\".",

But after coming to study at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I realised that I am actually very fortunate – because it turns out I don't know as much as I thought I did. I truly need to continue learning in order to gain more knowledge and skills related to my work.” The school added: “We're so glad that you enjoyed your time in NP, Dennis, and truly what a journey it's been! We'll be rooting for you as you embark on your next big adventure!” In another Instagram post by Chew on May 4, he documented his graduation ceremony, including taking pictures with his classmates and receiving his diploma. • "content": "Artificial intelligence (AI) software’s uncanny ability to emulate some important human behaviors has sparked speculation about its impact on employment. Will increasingly intelligent robots replace human workers, creating massive unemployment with heavy social costs? Some writers, for example, The New Yorker’s , recall the textile industry’s tumultuous history in the early 19th-century United Kingdom, when sophisticated new automated equipment replaced then-highly skilled production workers. Many displaced workers became violent, including through attacks on the job-eliminating machines. Known as ”Luddites” after a leader of these activities, these rebels remain etched in the annals of industrial history for the ill social consequences caused by technology-driven unemployment. Fast forward to the present, John Cassidy asks if we can do better as AI job loss looms. To be sure, job losses in some activities are real. In fact, AI-driven employment changes are emerging in the writing of software code. Google and others are cutting by 20% the labor needed to write code by replacing low-skilled coders in the programming process with AI. This kind of productivity improvement is nothing new in software development. I recall early years in digital system development at RCA, when integrated circuit chips had several hundred active transistor devices that were laboriously interconnected with simple design rules to perform desired data processing functions. The process was so laborious that the floor of a room was used in the design process, with engineers writing the interconnections on blueprints. At RCA, we designed some avionic systems with such labor-intensive methods. This did not last long, as software was designed to automate the process. We soon built chips with thousands and then millions of interconnected transistor elements. So what happened to the engineers who were replaced by the improving software? Some moved into chip design software development, and some moved into system design. I don’t recall that we had an employment problem because the company continuously invested in training the engineering force to allow people to move into different jobs as the technology improved. Today, chips with billions of transistors are designed with highly sophisticated equipment. There is a global shortage of chip designers capable of managing the process. That said, there will be employment dislocations as AI applications move into many business functions. Repetitive business operations are prime targets for AI implementations. Employees with such functions will, in fact, be replaced and need to be trained for jobs requiring new skills. But here again, we have seen such a job evolution process before. What happened to the many thousands of people who used to perform clerical functions or operations, such as telephone switchboard operators? New jobs emerged as technology matured. The simple but important answer is that technology can replace functions performed by humans only up to a point. In the end, human intelligence underwrites AI systems. The key to avoidance of technology-driven unemployment is national education that trains a technology-ready workforce.",

      • "content": "SYDNEY: New Zealand's prime minister on Tuesday (May 6) proposed banning children under 16 from social media, stressing the need to shield them from the perils of big tech platforms. Regulators the world over are wrestling with how to keep children safe online, as social media is increasingly flooded with violent and disturbing content. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon unveiled draft laws that would force social media companies to verify users were at least 16 years old, or face fines of up to NZ$2 million (US$1.2 million). The proposed ban was modelled on strict laws recently passed by Australia , which sits at the forefront of global efforts to regulate social media. \"It's time that New Zealand acknowledged that, for all the good things that come from social media, it's not always a safe place for our young people to be,\" Luxon told reporters. \"It's time we put the onus on these platforms to protect vulnerable children from harmful content, cyberbullying and exploitation.\" It was not clear when the legislation would be introduced to parliament, but Luxon said he was hopeful of garnering support across the chamber. The laws were drafted by Luxon's centre-right National Party, the biggest member in New Zealand's three-way governing coalition. To be passed, they would need the support of Luxon's two other coalition partners. \"Parents are constantly telling us that they are really worried about the impact that social media is having on their children,\" Luxon said. \"And they say they are really struggling to manage access to social media.\" \"ONLINE EXPOSURE\" National Party lawmaker Catherine Wedd, who drafted the Bill, said it would hold social media companies to account. \"As a mother of four children, I feel very strongly that families and parents should be better supported when it comes to overseeing their children's online exposure,\" she said. The proposed laws do not specify which social media companies would be covered in New Zealand. Last year, New Zealand banned children from using mobile phones while at school – a policy designed to turn around the country's plummeting literacy rates. Australia passed landmark laws in November restricting under-16s from social media – one of the world's toughest crackdowns on popular sites such as Facebook, Instagram and X. But video-sharing website YouTube will likely be exempt from Australia's ban so children can use it for their school work. Officials are yet to solve basic questions surrounding the laws, such as how the ban will be policed. The move sparked a fierce backlash from big tech companies, who variously described the laws as \"rushed\", \"vague\", and \"problematic\". Australia's ban is set to come into effect by December.",

Handel explained to AFP that many US productions, from James Bond flicks to the \"Mission Impossible\" franchise, are filmed abroad for obvious creative reasons. \"If the stunt is Tom Cruise climbing up the Eiffel Tower, what are we supposed to do, shoot at the replica Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas?\" Handel said. \"I mean, it's just nonsensical.\" Writing Sunday on his platform Truth Social, Trump said: \"I am authorising the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.\" Trump added: \"WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!\" His words plunged the movie industry into uncertainty, as entertainment companies saw their stock prices fall, unions struggled to understand if the bombshell also applies to TV series and everyone wondered if the policy could even be enforced. Handel noted that movies involve intellectual property. \"You can buy a movie ticket, but you don't buy a movie the way you buy a piece of clothing or an automobile,\" which can be taxed as they cross a border into the United States, he said. Even if a system could be devised to impose tariffs on movies filmed outside the United States, these levies would do more harm than good to the US industry, the lawyer added. \"The result of that would be to reduce production, to increase the cost of movies, to reduce the number of movies available for movie theatres and streamers to show, which would damage the distribution side of the business,\" Handel argued. \"CONFUSION\" Unions for actors and other media and entertainment workers said they awaited more details of Trump's plan but supported the goal of increasing production of movies, TV and streaming in the United States. \"We will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen our competitive position, accelerate economic growth and create good middle-class jobs for American workers,\" said one such guild, SAG-AFTRA. Many movie studios and other industry organisations had yet to officially react Monday but Trump's announcement triggered crisis meetings, Hollywood press outlets reported, publishing sceptical comments from insiders speaking on condition of anonymity. \"I can't see his target here other than confusion and distraction,\" the showbiz news outlet Deadline quoted a top distribution executive as saying. \"Let's hope this only encourages desperately needed increases in US state tax incentives being implemented ASAP,\" that person added. Such incentives offered by other countries - like Britain, Canada and Ireland, among others - are a lure for US movie studios to film outside the country. While Trump's idea is divisive, there is widespread agreement that the US movie industry is in dire straits. Since the historic strikes by actors and writers that shut it down in 2023, Hollywood has struggled to get back on its feet. In Los Angeles, the number of filming days hit a record low in 2024, if one excludes the total shutdown in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in part because many movies are now filmed in a growing number of countries that offer incentives such as tax rebates. Deadline quoted a Hollywood movie financier as saying he actually agrees with Trump's goal of having more movies filmed in the United States. \"But obviously the need is for rebates, not tariffs. Tariffs will just choke the remaining life out of the business,\" they were quoted as saying. As Hollywood fretted over Trump's announcement, the White House said no decision on foreign film tariffs has been made. \"The Administration is exploring all options to deliver on President Trump's directive to safeguard our country's national and economic security while Making Hollywood Great Again,\" the White House said in a statement. Trump told reporters Monday, \"I'm not looking to hurt the industry. I want to help the industry. But they're given financing by other countries\". That seemingly conciliatory remark stopped short of walking back the film tariff announcement, as Trump criticised California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is pushing for his state to double the tax credits it grants to the movie industry. \"Our film industry has been decimated by other countries taking them out, and also by incompetence,\" Trump said, attacking Newsom. \"He's just allowed it to be taken away from, you know, Hollywood.\"",
