      • "description": "The family of Osinachi Nwachukwu accused her husband of abusing the popular gospel singer before her death.",
      • "content": "The widower of popular Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu has been sentenced to death by hanging in connection with her death three years ago . The 42-year-old singer was initially said to have died of throat cancer, before her family went public with allegations of domestic violence. They accused her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, of abusing the music artist, which ultimately led to her death. A judge convicted him of 23 charges, including culpable homicide, and gave him the maximum sentence for the crime. It is unclear if Peter Nwachukwu, who denied the charges, will be executed, as the authorities rarely implement the death sentence. He has the right to appeal. The case, held in the High Court in the capital, Abuja, has drawn much attention in Nigeria because of the musician's prominence, and widespread concern about domestic violence. The late singer, who is survived by four children, was featured on the 2017 hit gospel song Ekwueme , which has more than 136 million YouTube views. Peter Nwachukwu, who was arrested in 2022, was also charged with emotional, verbal and psychological abuse, cruelty to children and criminal intimidation of them. Seventeen people, including two of the couple's children, were called by the prosecution as witnesses during the trial. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme found the widower guilty of all the charges, saying the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. • "description": "A BBC investigation identifies members of the security forces who shot dead protesters last June.",
      • "content": "Leading human rights organisations have renewed calls for investigations into the killing of protesters by Kenya's security forces during demonstrations against a rise in taxes last June. It follows a BBC Africa Eye investigation, exposing members of the security forces who shot dead three protesters at Kenya's parliament, igniting public outrage and demands for justice. Amnesty International and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) said the officers identified in the documentary should \"face the law\". The BBC said it had cancelled a private screening of the documentary in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Monday \"due to pressure from the authorities\". \"We are very disappointed not to have been able to share the documentary and panel discussion as planned,\" a BBC spokesperson said. \"In the meantime, audiences can watch the film on BBC Africa's YouTube channel,\" the spokesperson added. BBC Africa Eye's Blood Parliament documentary revealed how security forces brutally responded to youthful protesters who breached Kenya's parliament on 25 June 2024, the day lawmakers voted to approve the proposed tax hikes. The controversial finance bill was aimed at raising $2.7bn (£2bn) the government said it needed to cut its reliance on external borrowing - but had sparked widespread. Using open-source data and user-generated content, the BBC's analysis of more than 5,000 images identified uniformed security personnel - a policeman and solider - who opened fire killing three unarmed protesters at parliament. The wider clampdown by the security forces on a series of protests against the finance bill left at least 65 people dead, resulted in the forcible disappearance of 89 others and the arrest of thousands, according to Amnesty International . The Kenyan government put the death toll at 42. Amnesty said the documentary corroborated the group's earlier report that \"unnecessary and excessive lethal force was used against protesters\". It demanded both the police and the Kenya army to \"act and publicly state the actions being taken with regard to the findings of the BBC exposé\". The rights group urged Kenyans to sign a petition calling for a public inquiry into the killings during what were dubbed the #OccupyParliament protests. The KHRC said the BBC documentary revealed how \"organised criminals in police and military uniforms\" were deployed \"to murder innocent Kenyans\". It said the \"responsibility rests with [President William] Ruto, who must be held accountable for these deaths\". Kenyans expressed their anger online, pressing the government to hold security officers accountable for the killings and injuries of peaceful protesters. Ruto has previously defended police against accusations of brutality and recently warned Kenyans against commenting on military matters. Police have also repeatedly denied involvement in the abductions and killings. No officers have been charged. In response to the BBC documentary, the police service said the force could not investigate itself, adding that the Kenya's Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was responsible for investigating alleged misconduct. The Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) told the BBC the IPOA had not forwarded any request to look into any of its personnel involved in the operations at parliament. On Monday, following the release of the BBC Africa Eye documentary, the IPOA gave an update on the investigations into police brutality witnessed during the anti-tax protests. The authority revealed that so far, of the 60 deaths under investigation, 41 involved gunshot wounds. IPOA said it had completed 22 investigations, while it was actively pursuing 36, and that two cases were currently before the courts. The investigating agency said it had recorded 233 injury cases during the demonstrations. In a statement, the main opposition coalition said the \"execution of peaceful protesters was premeditated and sanctioned at the highest levels\". \"We strongly warn the Ruto regime on further bloodshed,\" a joint statement said, reacting to the BBC documentary. The Kenyan government is yet to officially respond to the BBC documentary but one legislator has called for the BBC to be banned in Kenya. George Peter Kaluma said that the 37-minute-long documentary risked \"destabilising\" the country. But a senator, Edwin Sifuna, defended the documentary saying there were no \"fabrications\" in it. \"We must encourage these stories to be told from all angles for the sake of truth and justice. Those who are uncomfortable with this are wrestling with their own consciences and we cannot help them with that,\" Sifuna posted on X. Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "Lawyers say they are preparing a legal challenge to stop the exploitation of workers in Ghana by the US tech giant and its French subcontractor Meta has moved its African content moderation operations to a “secretive” new site in Ghana’s capital, Accra, following lawsuits in Kenya over alleged worker abuse, according to a joint report by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) and The Guardian. In the investigation published on Sunday, the London-based media organizations said around 150 people are being employed under “worse” conditions at the Accra facility, where they review Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger content, including graphic violence and child sexual abuse material. The staff have reported severe mental health issues, including suicide attempts, depression, and insomnia, due to pressure to work at a “grueling pace in order to meet a series of opaque targets,” with minimal psychological support. The probe found that the workers in the West African country are barred from disclosing their work – even to family members – under threats of dismissal or deportation, particularly for those from conflict-affected regions. The Facebook parent company shut its content moderation hub in Kenya early in 2023 after its third-party contractor, Sama, announced it would no longer provide services. The relocation followed a series of lawsuits filed in the East African country by content moderators, who accused Meta and Sama of union-busting, unfair dismissals, and exposing workers to harmful material without providing adequate psychological support. READ MORE: Meta faces $2.4bn legal action in Africa over war content According to TBIJ, the tech giant began moving its operations to Ghana in early 2024, outsourcing content moderation to Teleperformance, a French multinational with a history of labor rights controversies. Last year, Teleperformance acquired Majorel, the firm to which Meta had attempted to shift its operations in Kenya after Sama withdrew.“For months, it has also refused to name the company that won the lucrative contract to provide the content moderators who deal with disturbing content on its platforms. Such secrecy works to shield tech companies like Meta from accountability,” the Bureau stated. Read more Blood gold bonanza: Inside South Africa’s shadow mining empire where crime, corruption, and desperation strike it rich Foxglove, a legal non-profit supporting cases against Meta in Nairobi, has announced that it is preparing to sue the US company and the subcontractor for exploiting content moderators in Ghana. “After the atrocious treatment of Facebook content moderators we exposed in Kenya, I thought it couldn’t get any worse. I was wrong. These are the worst conditions I have seen in six years of working with social media content moderators around the world,” Martha Dark, Foxglove’s co-executive director told TBIJ.“It’s very disappointing to see that once again, a Big Tech company appears to have chosen the path of denying workers their due,” Ghanaian lawyer Carla Olympio also said.Teleperformance has denied the claims, saying it has “robust people management systems and workplace practices, including a robust wellbeing program staffed by fully licensed psychologists to support our content moderators throughout their content moderation journey.”",

      • "content": "Bunkering and maritime services company FAMAR has joined the sixth edition of the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference as a Silver Sponsor, reinforcing its commitment to Angola's growing downstream sector. As the company expands its port infrastructure to support offshore oil and gas operations, FAMAR's presence at AOG 2025 will facilitate new opportunities for industry collaboration and investment. With extensive operations across Angola's ports, FAMAR plays a key role in the distribution and trade of petroleum products and services. The company is actively modernizing port infrastructure with integrated solutions in fuel storage, management and ship repair. At AOG 2024, FAMAR signed a Memorandum of Understanding with construction firm Angobetumes to jointly manage two fuel storage tanks at the Port of Luanda and three tanks at the Lobito Terminal. All five tanks have been certified by national authorities for the storage and marketing of petroleum, strengthening Angola's fuel storage capacity in strategic locations. Beyond fuel storage, FAMAR offers a wide range of maritime services including passenger and cargo transport, training and vessel chartering. The company supplies marine fuels – such as Marine Diesel MGO and Fuel Oil IFO 180 cts – for all ship types and facilitates both import and export of refined petroleum products. FAMAR also manages full-cycle maintenance and repair for a variety of floating marine assets, playing a vital role in supporting Angola's offshore oil and gas projects. Notable partnerships include work with Azule Energy on Block 18, as well as contributions to the Platina Oil Field and Greater Plutonio developments. AOG is the largest oil and gas event in Angola. Taking place with the full support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; national oil company Sonangol; and the African Energy Chamber; the event is a platform to sign deals and advance Angola's oil and gas industry. Aden Duale today held bilateral discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO) Acting Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who paid him a courtesy call at his office. The talks focused on sustainable responses to Kenya's multiple and complex public health emergencies, including Mpox, Cholera, Kala-azar, Polio, and Measles, which continue to exert pressure on the healthcare system. The meeting also reviewed progress on the operationalization of the Kenya National Public Health Institute (NPHI), a key body coordinating disease surveillance, emergency preparedness, and response. WHO reaffirmed its commitment to support the NPHI in alignment with its public health mandate. Hon. Duale appreciated WHO's longstanding support to Kenya's health sector and called for enhanced collaboration in emergency logistics and supplies, health worker training and capacity building, as well as community-based surveillance and risk communication. These areas are crucial to advancing the Universal Health Coverage agenda. The CS was joined by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Ag. DG, NPHI Dr Maureen Kamene and Dr. Stephen K. • "description": "(MENAFN - African Press Organization) Download logo The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are today launching a–Babies Before Bottom Lines– manifesto ...",
      • "content": "The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are today launching a“Babies Before Bottom Lines” manifesto to warn parents in South Africa against false and unethical baby milk advertising. The manifesto was posted online today to call out“predatory and pervasive practices” and has been backed and shared by prominent parenting influencers around the country. WHO and UNICEF are jointly calling the attention of parents and caregivers to the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and its related information sources . The code provides guidelines on stricter regulation of marketing of breastmilk substitutes, to curb harmful effects on babies' short- and long-term health. WHO's Country Representative in South Africa, Shenaaz El-Halabi, says:“False, incomplete, misleading health and nutrition claims by formula companies should stop now. The WHO calls on formula milk companies to stop presenting incomplete scientific evidence and inferring unsupported health outcomes.” WHO and UNICEF are specifically calling on local regulators to update Regulations Relating to Foodstuffs for Infants and Young Children (aka R991) to include other advertising techniques and digital marketing practices that have become prevalent in the past few years since the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes of 1981 and local Regulation R991 of 2012 were drafted. Some popular social media platforms, whose algorithms can target specific consumers with specific messages at specific times, were still in their infancy or did not yet exist in 2012. Of particular concern is that parents are often targeted with information that blurs the lines between nutritional facts and promotional pseudo-science and emotional manipulation when they are at their most vulnerable. The pseudo-scientific health claims made by formula companies discourage mothers from breastfeeding, which should always be a first choice as breastmilk is the most complete and healthiest milk for babies. In addition, widespread evidence exists that women have internalised doubts about the quality and quantity of their breastmilk, mirroring the themes and messaging of formula milk marketing campaigns. In line with their multi-country study on the impacts of marketing breastmilk substitutes, WHO and UNICEF warn that“inappropriate promotion of breastmilk substitutes negatively impacts breastfeeding practices, and that advertisers are promoting a false choice between formula feeding and breastfeeding, without offering informed choice to parents about the real differences between breastmilk and various brands of formula”. UNICEF South Africa Representative, Christine Muhigana, notes that:“Government and civil society partners are to be commended for their efforts to address this concerning issue. It is evident that formula milk companies continue to actively target health professionals to convince them to prescribe formula. This Manifesto is part of a broader effort to address these unfair practices so that mothers and caregivers are fully aware of unethical marketing practices.” Cross promotion, also known as“brand extension” which is a marketing practice whereby one product is used to advertise another product by using similar branding, packaging and labelling (including but not limited to similar colours, design, font types, mascots and logos) has become a common practice by the bay formula companies. “All families need to be supported with evidence-based information so that they can make the most appropriate and informed decision for feeding their babies. Those choices, however, should never be exploited for corporate profits. We are finding again and again, all around the world, that unethical corporate influence is imposed on caregivers through false advertising. Companies use digital marketing algorithms that exploit parents when they are most vulnerable. They capitalize on parents' doubts and questions. For instance, we see advertisers directing fake science at caregivers in the middle of the night, when they or their babies are struggling, to falsely convince them that bottle-fed babies sleep better than breastfed babies. This is wrong and needs to stop,” says Dr Laurence Grummer-Strawn, who leads WHO's work on infant and young child feeding. WHO and UNICEF have uncovered systematic and unethical marketing strategies by the US $55 billion infant formula industry, finding it uses the“infant formula industry uses pervasive, personalised and powerful methods to target parents when they are at their most vulnerable in the early days of their new babies life, and manipulate scientific claims to promote their products whilst undermining parents' confidence”. Aqeelah Harron , an online content creator who owns the popular Fashion Breed social media platform, is supporting the campaign. \"I'm a mom to a toddler and my child's health matters to me more than anything. I think it's wrong that powerful formula companies with big platforms are preying on parents to manipulate us into falling for fake science. Babies and new parents are vulnerable and should never be exploited. We need to prioritise comprehensive feeding education for all caregivers, free from the influence of profit-driven marketing.\" Several other online influencers are also backing the campaign. WHO and UNICEF invite the public to join them in calling for an end to the aggressive marketing of formula milk, and to share their call to action:“Choose babies before bottom lines.” MENAFN29042025002747001784ID1109486407 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "Bureau Veritas Uganda ( ) is pleased to announce that it has officially been accredited as an Approved Superintendent by the Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA) following a stringent assessment and audit process concluded in February 2025. This achievement certifies Bureau Veritas Uganda as a trusted service provider for inspections, verifications, examinations, quality assessments, and sampling of traded agricultural commodities on a global scale. As a GAFTA-approved superintendent, Bureau Veritas Uganda now meets and upholds the highest standards required by one of the most respected international trade bodies in the grain and feed sector. GAFTA Accreditation GAFTA accreditation is a quality assurance seal indicating that Bureau Veritas Uganda can deliver reliable inspection and testing services aligned with international contractual and regulatory requirements. It ensures that global partners recognise the company as a competent authority in the grain and feed industry. As an accredited GAFTA member, Bureau Veritas Uganda is authorised to provide a comprehensive range of services, including conducting quality inspections and certifications, sampling and grading agricultural commodities, and performing laboratory tests to assess nutritional content and detect contaminants. The company also plays a vital role in verifying packaging, labelling, and logistics processes to ensure compliance with international standards. These services are vital for clients in the global trade of agricultural products like soybeans, corn, wheat, and other grains. The Pathway to Accreditation Achieving GAFTA accreditation is a rigorous procedure. For Bureau Veritas Uganda, the process began with an internal self-assessment to ensure its services aligned with GAFTA's stringent quality requirements. This was followed by the formal submission of an application for accreditation. The process then advanced to the formal application stage, where GAFTA initiated a thorough audit that included an extensive evaluation of Bureau Veritas Uganda's documentation, quality control mechanisms, and operational processes. After successfully meeting all criteria, the company received GAFTA accreditation. \"GAFTA accreditation is a strong endorsement of our commitment to excellence, integrity, and technical competence in agricultural testing and inspection,\" said Cyprian Kabbis, Area Chief Executive for Bureau Veritas Eastern Africa. “It gives our clients the assurance that they can rely on us for objective, internationally benchmarked quality assessments that support their business, whether they are exporting, trading, or ensuring food safety standards are met. We're proud to contribute to the strength and transparency of the agricultural supply chain both in Uganda and across the continent.\" Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Bureau Veritas. • "content": "This 28 April 2025, the City of Lomé (Togo) hosted the opening of the steering committees for the ECOWAS Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP) projects and programs. The aim of this annual meeting, which brings together more than seventy institutional players and technical and financial partners from the West African agroforestry and fisheries sector, is to take stock of the implementation of regional projects and programs for 2024. This regional consultation body is a key forum for accountability, experience sharing and strategic orientation. It enables the ECOWAS Commission, as the regional coordinating body, to review the progress made, identify the obstacles encountered and propose appropriate solutions to improve the effectiveness of public and partnership action in the agricultural sector. Over the three days discussions, representatives from Member States, regional institutions, producer organizations, development partners and sectoral experts will discuss the results achieved in 2024, in relation to the regional initiatives implemented. Discussions are taking place in a particularly complex regional context, marked by an upsurge in security crises, notably in the Sahel countries, persistent sociopolitical tensions in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and recurrent climatic shocks compromising access to basic social services. Despite the constraints, several encouraging results have been recorded, particularly in terms of strengthening the technical capabilities of beneficiaries. They have been able to adopt innovative tools and techniques to improve agricultural productivity and the flow of intraregional trade in agri-food products. However, the lack of synergy among institutions is a major obstacle to achieving the expected results. Faced with systemic challenges, it is essential to rethink and update the policies, strategies and intervention mechanisms for food, nutrition and pastoral security. With this in mind, the ECOWAS Commission has embarked on a process of revising the Regional Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP) and the Regional Food Security Strategy. The aim of the process is to optimize existing institutional arrangements and promote sustainable and appropriate funding mechanisms, in a context of dwindling resources, both internationally (gradual withdrawal of external aid) and nationally (internal budgetary constraints). For the Chief of staff, Mr Konlani Dindiogue, representing Togo's Minister for Agriculture, Village Hydraulics and Rural Development,“despite the many efforts made, the region remains dependent on food imports to meet the needs of its population. It is therefore essential to focus efforts on local development through agro-industrial and local processing sectors that generate jobs for young people”. The ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mrs Massandjé Touré-Litsé, the Chair of the Committees, stressed the need for greater coherence and harmonization of interventions. 'Like in 2024, this year's Steering Committees command us to think strategically with a view to improving the convergence of actions and initiatives contributing to the implementation of ECOWAP, she stressed. In this respect, the recommendations of the Technical Monitoring Committees (TMCs) held in November 2024 led to a reorganization of ECOWAP's priority thematic areas, reducing them from nine to five, namely (i) Improving production and productivity, (ii) Developing animal and fishery resources, (iii) Promoting value chains, regional markets and the competitiveness of agricultural products, (iv) Strengthening food and nutritional resilience, security and sovereignty, and (v) Financing mechanisms, governance and steering of the agricultural policy. The thematic fact sheets prepared for this purpose highlight notable achievements, while also highlighting persistent challenges, such as increased exposure to climatic and security hazards, low level of mechanization in agriculture, and obstacles to free movement of agricultural products. “Thanks to increased internal funding through the Community levy and partner funds, better institutional coordination and improved governance systems, the region has strengthened its leadership in driving ECOWAP. Nevertheless, the ECOWAS transformation program is still limited by structural challenges, notably excessive dependence on external funding, late legal and policy harmonization, limited interoperability between data systems and insufficient involvement of the private sector“, Commissioner Touré-Litsé added. The annual regional steering committees for ECOWAP projects and programs constitute a strategic instrument for promoting synergies and complementarities to improve coordination at regional level. • "content": "Principal Secretary for Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ouma Oluga, made his inaugural visit to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on 28th April 2025 to assess service delivery and progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). During the visit, Dr. Oluga commended MTRH for its leadership in providing specialized healthcare services, training, and research. He noted that the hospital treats over 1.5 million patients annually, performs more than 60,000 surgeries, and conducts over 2 million laboratory tests, positioning it among the most important health institutions in the country. Touring key facilities including the Radiotherapy Centre, Renal Centre, Catheterisation Laboratory (Cathlab), and specialized MRI services, Dr. Oluga praised the hospital's efforts to expand access to advanced medical care within the region. He lauded MTRH's partnerships with international institutions in North America and Europe, which continue to strengthen its clinical and research capacities. Dr. Oluga also highlighted the hospital's successful integration of the Social Health Authority (SHA) model, which has improved insurance processing and patient access to care. Emphasizing the Ministry's focus on strengthening healthcare delivery, Dr. Oluga called for enhanced collaboration between referral hospitals and county health facilities. He noted that reducing patient congestion at MTRH requires building capacity in county hospitals to manage non-critical cases locally. “There are three critical pillars in the health sector: restoring public trust, upholding integrity, and delivering quality services,” said Dr. Oluga.“Every health worker must understand their role in delivering efficient and dignified care.” The Principal Secretary was received by MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa, Board Members, and senior management. He was accompanied by Mr. Douglas Bosire, Acting CEO of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council, and Ms. Agnes Tuiyot, representing the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority. MTRH serves patients from 27 counties in Western Kenya, supporting a population of over 25 million people. Dr. Oluga affirmed the Ministry's commitment to supporting institutions like MTRH in delivering on the government's healthcare agenda. • "content": "AstraZeneca, a global biopharmaceutical company is in collaboration with Revna Biosciences ( ), a precision medicine research and advanced diagnostics company to provide EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor) biomarker testing in Ghana. This partnership goes beyond diagnostics and research, extending towards targeted therapies for patients tailored to their unique genetic makeup. There will be enhanced access to modern technologies for EGFR testing capabilities to improve early diagnosis and treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) more effectively. EGFR Testing Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is a protein involved in cell growth, division and survival. Mutations in the EGFR gene lead to the over-production of EGFR proteins on some types of cancer cells, causing the cells to divide more rapidly. EGFR is regarded as the cancer driver gene in lung cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and serves as a biomarker in cancer treatment. Accurate testing for EGFR mutations allows doctors to determine the best course of treatment for patients, including the use of targeted therapies that have shown greater efficacy and fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. Today's Patient, Tomorrow's Hope Dr. Khomotso Mashilane, Medical Director African Cluster at AstraZeneca remarked on the program's potential impact:“At AstraZeneca, we are committed to working collaboratively with governments, healthcare professionals, and patient communities to create resilient healthcare systems and expand access to innovative cancer treatments for patients across Africa. By investing in EGFR biomarker testing and precision medicine, we are taking a pivotal step toward giving patients in Ghana the treatments they need and deserve. Today's patients are at the heart of our work, and with tomorrow's advances in targeted therapies, we are confident that hope will become a tangible reality for many.” The first step in this collaboration is to map and streamline the patient journey from accurate diagnosis through treatment for improved health outcomes. Beyond providing advanced biomarker testing resource, this partnership will offer educational programs and workshops to equip healthcare professionals in the lung cancer space with next-generation tools, aiming for earlier detection and better clinical outcomes, ultimately contributing to global cancer control. We anticipate initiating the rollout process shortly, which will encompass onboarding of participating healthcare professionals, the commencement of the first series of workshops, and participant selection. Future Look Dr. Derrick Edem Akpalu, CEO and Co-Founder of Revna Biosciences also spoke about the importance of the partnership“This collaboration is timely, as the demand for personalized healthcare is growing. Advances in EGFR testing and targeted therapies offer unprecedented hope for improved cancer care in Ghana. Together, we aim to raise awareness and increase access to life-saving treatments, ensuring that every patient in Ghana has the best chance to thrive. The knowledge we gain today will help shape a better tomorrow for patients here and around the world.\" About AstraZeneca: AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-focused pharmaceutical company dedicated to transforming the future of healthcare by unlocking the power of what science can do for people, society and the planet. He will bring his vast expertise, advocating for and implementing systemic health reforms across Africa. Dr. Ogwell's leadership is marked by his commitment to improving health outcomes through innovative strategies and collaborative efforts with governments, private sector and partners. Most recently, Dr. Ogwell served as the Vice President of Global Health Strategy at the United Nations Foundation, managing a significant portfolio aligned with the UN's key initiatives, including global health policy, advocacy, convening, thought leadership and grant-making. With nearly 30 years of experience, Dr. Ogwell has held distinguished roles at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), where he drove the vision of Africa's New Public Health Order and managed the continent's COVID-19 response. VillageReach's mission to transform health care delivery to reach everyone has never been more imperative, especially with recent setbacks in the sector. Under Dr. Ogwell's leadership, we are confident in our ability to deliver on our mission, achieve our strategic goals and ensure that under-reached communities receive the health care they need to thrive. At a panel session held at the Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC) on April 25 – Building Local Business Capacity for Energy Sector Participation – industry stakeholders explored how strategic investments, public-private partnerships and enabling policy frameworks can open doors for Namibian businesses, especially in the oil and gas space. The session featured key voices from across the energy and finance landscape, including Melanie Harrison, Country Leader at Deloitte Namibia; Jorge de Morais, General Manager of Kaeso Energy Services; and Precious Ehihamen, Head of Research and Intelligence at Moneda Invest. Together, they shared insights on bridging capacity gaps, fostering enabling environments and expanding inclusive participation in Namibia's energy boom. “We brought together a group of experts to examine the process, identify the gaps and frame the issue - with the goal of understanding how local businesses can begin to plug into and benefit from the oil and gas sector across the value chain,” said Oneyka-Cindy Ojogbo, Deputy Managing Partner at CLG, who moderated the panel. “Namibia needs to build laws and policies that make sense and make entry into the market easier for foreign investors. But also, the country needs to give them the responsibility to deliver,” said de Morais, emphasizing the importance of balancing investment attraction with accountability and local benefit. Deloitte Namibia is playing an active role in local content development through foundational research and strategic advisory. Its Industrial Baseline Study maps the current capabilities of Namibian enterprises and identifies key areas for workforce and business development aligned with the energy sector's evolving needs. Moneda Invest is similarly contributing by championing financial empowerment and SME growth. In collaboration with First National Bank and Ino Capital Investments, the firm recently launched the Local Accelerator program – a targeted initiative aimed at scaling SMEs within Namibia's oil, gas and broader energy sectors. Kaeso Energy Services has positioned itself as a strong advocate for local content through consistent participation in capacity-building platforms such as NIEC and other industry forums. The company supports local businesses in accessing markets, technology and finance – critical components for competing in the energy space. It is also actively shaping policies and partnerships to ensure Namibian firms are well-prepared to win contracts and contribute meaningfully to the country's energy future. As Namibia positions itself as a rising energy hub, such initiatives are laying the foundation for long-term, inclusive growth – ensuring the benefits of the energy transition reach beyond extraction to uplift the wider economy. • "content": "The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ( ) Congo Basin office is delighted to announce that Exploitation Gabonaise de Grumes (EGG), a significant and long-standing player in Gabon's forestry sector, has achieved FSC Forest Management (FM) certification. This significant milestone, attained on December 5, 2024, covers EGG's 256,683 hectares of forest across its Forest Management Units (FMUs) EGG ROUGE and EGG VERT in the provinces of Ogooué Lolo and Haut Ogooué. EGG has demonstrated a long-term commitment to sustainability, operating in these Forest Management Units (FMUs). Between 2014 and 2017, the company developed and secured approval for its sustainable forest management plans. This commitment solidified in 2022 when EGG dedicated itself to achieving FSC certification, diligently working to adapt its processes and approaches to meet the rigorous FSC standard requirements. Their hard work and unwavering dedication to sustainable practices have now been formally recognized with FSC certification under license code FSC-C194914 and certificate code PBN-FM/COC-065131. This achievement represents a substantial increase in the total area of FSC-certified forests in Gabon, rising from over 2.2 million hectares to over 2.4 million hectares, and elevates the total certified area within the Congo Basin to an impressive 6.2 million hectares. FSC Congo Basin expresses its enthusiasm \"We warmly congratulate EGG on this significant achievement,\" stated Patrick Epie, FSC Congo Basin and West Africa Sub Regional Coordinator. \"Their consistent dedication to sustainable forest management over the years has rightfully culminated in this well-deserved FSC certification. EGG's commitment clearly demonstrates that responsible forestry is not only viable in the Congo Basin but is also a crucial pathway for safeguarding the long-term health of our invaluable forests and fostering a sustainable economy. This certification provides substantial momentum to our ongoing efforts to promote responsible forest management across Gabon and the wider Congo Basin.\" Boumi Hypp, Certification Manager at FSC Congo Basin, added, \"EGG's journey towards FSC certification is a powerful testament to their proactive and responsible approach to forestry. Achieving certification for such a significant forest area demands considerable effort and a deep-seated commitment to the core principles of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability that FSC champions. We are confident that EGG's certified operations will serve as a strong and positive example for other forestry companies in the region, encouraging the broader adoption of sustainable practices.\" EGG celebrates its FSC certification \"Obtaining FSC Forest Management certification marks a proud and significant moment for EGG, representing the culmination of years of dedicated work and a deep-seated commitment to sustainable forest management,\" said Adrien Spaymant, Deputy Director of Exploitation Gabonaise de Grumes (EGG). \"We firmly believe in the enduring value of our forests and are dedicated to managing them in a way that ensures both their ecological integrity and their vital contribution to the local economy. This prestigious certification provides our valued partners and customers with the definitive assurance that our timber is sourced responsibly, actively contributing to a more sustainable future for Gabon's precious forest resources.\" This certification underscores EGG's strong commitment to sustainable forestry practices and further reinforces the growing and crucial movement towards responsible forest management within the Congo Basin. The FSC Congo Basin office eagerly anticipates continued collaboration with EGG and other key stakeholders to further expand the area of certified forests throughout the region. The International Tropical Timber Association (ATIBT), an organisation promoting the development of a sustainable, ethical and legal tropical timber industry as a natural and renewable resource essential to the socio-economic development of producer countries, congratulates EGG on obtaining its FSC forest management certification. Benoît Jobbé-Duval, Managing Director of ATIBT:“ATIBT congratulates the teams at EGG and FSC on this new certification in Gabon. Our association, which promotes sustainable management by all means, can only applaud the efforts made to achieve this great result.” Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Forest Stewardship Council. • "content": "UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, today announced an expanded three-year global partnership with TECNO ( ), a leading innovative technology brand, to address critical education gaps for refugee children and youth across Africa. Building on five years of successful collaboration, the two parties launched the special project“Together We Can Bring Education to African Children and Youth”, to support two UNHCR education initiatives: the Primary Impact Program and the DAFI (Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative) Tertiary Scholarship Program. Over the next three years, the partnership aims to benefit 54,000-plus refugee children and 15 DAFI scholars through enhanced access to quality learning opportunities. Of the 31.6 million refugees under UNHCR's mandate, approximately 14.8 million are refugee children of school age. Their access to education is limited, with almost half of them unable to attend school at all. Refugee children encounter difficulties such as inadequate school resources, psychological trauma, discrimination and systemic exclusion. UNHCR and its partners are making significant strides in building a better future for displaced children and youth through education programs like Primary Impact and DAFI. The partnership has a strong focus on the East and Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region; areas grappling with some of Africa's most severe displacement crises. Here, over 5.4 million refugees and 18.8 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) face compounded challenges. In 2024 alone, millions fled conflicts in South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, while natural disasters, including extreme flooding, have exacerbated displacement crises in the region. Education is not only a lifeline for displaced youth but a catalyst for Africa's broader development. Investing in refugee education is critical to breaking cycles of poverty, fostering economic resilience, and strengthening social cohesion. Under the global partnership, initial support aims at benefiting at least 18,000 refugee children and 5 DAFI scholars in 2025. “Education is a cornerstone of resilience and hope for displaced youth,” said Sophie Muller, UNHCR Representative in China.“We are excited to deepen our collaboration with TECNO. Their commitment over the past five years has been instrumental in expanding access to education for refugee children in Africa and exemplifies how private sector engagement can drive meaningful impact, equipping displaced youth with the knowledge and skills they need for solutions and a brighter future.” Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO, said: \"Education is the driving force in transforming the lives of refugees and fostering a promising future. TECNO is steadfast in its commitment to African communities, dedicating itself to supporting local educational development through tangible actions. By renewing our close collaboration with UNHCR, TECNO will continue to offer high-quality protection and educational support to refugee children and youth across Africa. This empowers them to unlock their full potential and contributes to the continent's sustainable development.\" Since 2020, UNHCR and TECNO's collaboration has reached more than 24,000 refugee children with improved educational infrastructure and supported 40 DAFI scholars through their higher learning. Through initiatives like the TECNO internship program, which offers career pathways for young refugees, the partnership demonstrates how the private sector can contribute to global humanitarian efforts. Design inspiration will be drawn from the surrounding landscape and local Ikoma culture, and the camp will aim to incorporate sustainable practices that support conservation and minimise environmental impact. Guests can anticipate a range of immersive experiences, from spectacular daytime game drives and evocative night safaris that unveil the Serengeti's nocturnal rhythms, to walking safaris, hot air balloon flights, bush dining, and meaningful engagement with the local Ikoma tribe. “We are excited to collaborate with Marriott International to bring Autograph Collection to the Serengeti,” said Rishen Patel, developer of Mapito Safari Camp, Serengeti, Autograph Collection.“This camp will offer an intimate, and immersive experience that reflects both the natural wonder of the region and the timeless storytelling and craftsmanship of the brand.” Autograph Collection's global portfolio currently includes over 330 hotels that are carefully selected for their vision, passion, and unique perspectives on design and hospitality. • "content": "AfricaNenda Foundation ( ) has released its 2024 Annual Report, marking a significant year of transformation and impact in its mission to accelerate access to inclusive instant payment systems (IIPS) across Africa. The report highlights key milestones, insights, and the organization's transition into an independent foundation, further strengthening its ability to drive financial inclusion across the continent. “In 2024, we took a bold step forward as we became an independent organization, allowing us to operate with greater agility and deepen our impact,” said Robert Ochola, CEO of AfricaNenda Foundation. “Financial inclusion is not just about facilitating transactions; it is about providing the infrastructure, rules, and governance that enable individuals and businesses-especially women and underserved communities-to participate fully in the digital economy.” Inclusive Instant Payment Systems a Pathway to Africa's Financial Inclusion Despite Africa's rapid growth in digital financial services, nearly 400 million people remain excluded from formal financial systems. Payments play a foundational role in financial inclusion, with over a third of banked adults opening their first accounts to receive government or wage payments (Global Findex 2022). Yet, half of African adults still lack access to IIPS, making it difficult for many to send and receive money affordably and reliably. AfricaNenda's 2024 State of Inclusive Instant Payment Systems (SIIPS) in Africa Report reveals that IIPS-societal-scale digital payment systems enabling low-cost, real-time transactions-are crucial to unlocking access for the financially underserved. Without such infrastructure, millions of women, young adults, and rural communities are forced to rely on cash, limiting their participation in the digital economy. Driving Financial Inclusion Across the Continent AfricaNenda's work in 2024 spanned multiple countries and regions, supporting the development of interoperable payment systems and strengthening digital public infrastructure. Key achievements included: Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond With a team of 21 professionals across 11 African countries, AfricaNenda remains committed to its vision of enabling financial access for 260 million financially excluded Africans by 2030. As an independent foundation, it will focus on: The AfricaNenda 2024 Annual Report is now available for download: AfricaNenda Annual Report 2024 – AfricaNenda ( ) MENAFN29042025002747001784ID1109484120 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "description": "Historians say there were three popes of North African descent, the last one more than 1,500 years ago.",
      • "content": "Now predominantly Muslim, North Africa was once a Christian heartland, producing Catholic popes who left their mark on the Church to this day. Their papacies were in the era of the Roman Empire, which stretched across modern-day Tunisia, the north-east of Algeria and the coast of western Libya. \"North Africa was the Bible Belt of ancient Christianity,\" says Prof Christopher Bellitto, a historian at Kean University in the US. Many Catholics in Africa are hoping that that the papacy will return to the continent for the first time in more than 1,500 years, as a successor to Pope Francis is chosen. Here, we look at the three previous African popes - and how they got Christians to celebrate Easter Sunday and St Valentine's Day. All three have been recognised in the Church as saints. Thought to be of Berber origin, Pope Victor I was in charge of the Catholic Church at a time when Christians were sometimes being persecuted by Roman officials for refusing to worship Roman gods. He is perhaps best known for ensuring Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday. In the 2nd Century, some Christian groups from the Roman province of Asia (in modern-day Turkey) celebrated Easter on the same day that Jews celebrated Passover, which could fall on different days of the week. However, Christians in the Western part of the Empire believed that Jesus was resurrected on a Sunday, so Easter should always be celebrated on that day. The debate over when the resurrection took place made it an extremely contentious issue. The \"Easter controversy\" was symbolic of larger conflicts between East and West, and whether or not Christians should follow Jewish practices. Victor I called the very first Roman Synod - a gathering of Church leaders - to resolve the impasse. He did this by threatening to excommunicate from the Church those bishops who refused to comply with his wishes. \"He was a rather forceful voice for getting everyone on literally the same page,\" Prof Bellitto told the BBC. This was an impressive feat, the historian said, because \"he was the Bishop of Rome when Christianity was illegal in the Roman empire.\" Another important part of Victor I's legacy was to introduce Latin as the common language of the Catholic Church. Previously Ancient Greek was the primary language of the Catholic Liturgy as well as official communication for the Church. Victor I himself wrote in - and spoke - Latin, which was widely spoken in North Africa. Pope Miltiades is believed to have been born in Africa. During his reign, Christianity gained increasing acceptance from successive Roman emperors, eventually becoming the Empire's official religion. Before this, the persecution of Christians had been widespread at different points in the Empire's history. However, Prof Bellitto pointed out that Militiades was not responsible for this change, saying the Pope was the \"recipient of the Roman benevolence\" rather than being a great negotiator. Miltiades was given a palace by the Roman Emperor Constantine, becoming the first pope to have an official residence. He was also granted permission by Constantine to build the Lateran Basilica, now the oldest public church in Rome. While modern popes live and work in the Vatican, the Lateran church is sometimes referred to in Catholicism as \"the mother of all churches\". Gelasius I is the only one of the three African popes who historians believe was not born in Africa. \"There's a reference to him being... Roman-born. So we don't know if he [ever] lived in North Africa, but it seems clear that he was of North African descent,\" Prof Bellitto explained. He was the most important of the three African church leaders, according to Prof Bellitto. Gelasius I is widely recognised as the first pope to officially be called the \"Vicar of Christ\", a term that signifies the Pope's role as Christ's representative on Earth. He also developed the Doctrine of the Two Swords, which emphasised the separate-but-equal powers of the Church and the state. Gelasius I made the critical distinction that both powers were given to the Church by God, who then delegated earthly power to the state, making the Church ultimately superior. \"Later on, in the Middle Ages, popes sometimes tried to veto the selection of an emperor or a king, because they said God gave them that power,\" said Prof Bellitto. Gelasius I is remembered, too, for his response to the Acacian Schism - a split between the Eastern and Western Christian Churches from 484 to 519. During this period, Gelasius I asserted the supremacy of Rome and the papacy over the entire Church, East and West, which experts believe went further than any of his predecessors. Gelasius is also responsible for a popular celebration which is still marked every year - establishing St Valentine's Day on 14 February in 496 to commemorate the Christian martyr St Valentine. Some accounts say Valentine was a priest who continued to perform weddings in secret when they were banned by Emperor Claudius II. Historians believe that Valentine's Day is rooted in the Roman love and fertility festival, Lupercalia, and was a move by Gelasius I to Christianise pagan traditions. Prof Bellitto says there is no way of knowing with any degree of accuracy what the three popes looked like. \"We have to remember that the Roman Empire, and indeed the Middle Ages, didn't think of race as we think of it nowadays. It had nothing to do with skin colour,\" he told the BBC. \"People in the Roman Empire didn't deal with race, they dealt with ethnicity.\" Prof Philomena Mwaura, an academic at Kenya's Kenyatta University, told the BBC that Roman Africa was very multicultural, with local Berber and Punic groups, freed slaves and people who had come from Rome found there. \"The North African community was quite mixed, and it was a trade route also for many people who were involved in trade in the earlier antiquity,\" she explained. Rather than identifying with specific ethnic groups, \"most people who belonged to areas within the Roman Empire regarded themselves as Roman\", Prof Mwaura added. None of of the 217 popes since Gelasius I are believed to have come from Africa. \"The church in North Africa was weakened by very many forces, including the fall of the Roman Empire and also the incursion of Muslims [into North Africa] in the 7th Century,\" Prof Mwaura said. However, some experts argue that the prevalence of Islam in North Africa does not explain the absence of a pope from the entire continent over more than 1,500 years. Prof Bellitto said the process of electing a new pontiff became an \"Italian monopoly\" for many years. However, he said there was a strong chance of a pope from Asia or Africa in the near future because Catholics in the southern hemisphere outnumber those in the north. In fact, Catholicism is expanding more rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa today than anywhere else. The latest figures show there were 281 million Catholics in Africa in 2023. This accounts for 20% of the worldwide congregation. Three Africans are in the race to succeed Pope Francis - the Democratic Republic of Congo's Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Ghana's Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson and Guinea's Robert Sarah. But Prof Mwaura argued that \"although Christianity is very strong in Africa, the power of the Church is still in the north, where the resources have been\". \"Maybe, as it continues to be very strong within the continent and supporting itself, then a time will come when there could be an African pope,\" she said.",

      • "description": "A court case which found Nigeria's leading football bodies to be negligent for the death of a player is hailed as a \"landmark\" by global players' union Fifpro.",
      • "content": "A court case which found Nigeria's leading football bodies to be negligent for the death of a player has been hailed as a \"landmark\" by global players' union Fifpro. Martins Chineme died aged 25 in March 2020 after collapsing on the pitch while representing Nasarawa United in Nigeria's top flight, which was administrated by the League Management Company (LMC), now known as the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) board, a body that sits under the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Over five years later, the club, the LMC, the NFF and Christian Mbah, the match commissioner, were all adjudged to have failed in their duty of care to the player. While there have been previous negligence cases in Nigeria, this is the first regarding negligence in sport. \"It's a proper landmark case in football,\" Loic Alves, Fifpro's senior legal counsel, told BBC Sport Africa. \"I have not seen another ruling where a federation is held liable to the extent that they are in this case. This is rare.\" This month's historic verdict was made by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), which awarded damages to the family of the late player, who died of suspected cardiac arrest. The club, the NPFL, the NFF and Mbah have not commented on the ruling. Key to the findings of the NICN, which has exclusive jurisdiction over civil matters related to employment and workplace conditions, is that the ruling was made in common law, so establishing a legal precedent for such cases in future. \"We're hopeful that this ruling will serve not just in Nigeria, but will also cross borders and force federations, leagues and clubs to reflect on their regulations and obligations,\" said Alves. \"It works as a strong reminder that a lack of enforcement of your regulations can lead to real-life consequences - and these consequences can be terrible.\" Chineme's family have reacted with both relief and delight after a protracted legal trial. \"It was an emotion one can't really express,\" Chineme's brother Michael told the BBC. \"It has been a long journey in pursuit of justice. I want to dedicate the victory to those who feel all hope is gone.\" Martins Chineme died after a catalogue of failures at the Lafia Township Stadium where there was no functioning ambulance or working defibrillator, poor on-pitch treatment and an under-qualified club doctor. Contrary to league rules, the defender had not passed a mandatory pre-season medical assessment that includes an echocardiogram, which could have been vital for a player whose family have a history of heart issues. Nasarawa United, a state-owned club, had also failed to provide insurance cover for the player. The pre-season screening failure and inadequate medical facilities prompted the NICN to describe the defendants' conduct as \"reprehensible\". The Chineme family also successfully claimed that all the defendants owed the footballer a duty of care - in ensuring that a club has mandated medical personnel and equipment on any given match day. \"What I find interesting in this judgement is that the duty of care is not only on the club,\" said Alves. \"I find this extended application of a classic labour law principle to be very, very positive for all players.\" It is a point backed by one of the Chinemes' lawyers. \"As regards the operations of the NFF and the league body, knowing that a civil court can hold them responsible going forward is going to make a real difference,\" Sportlicitors founder Tosin Akinyemi told BBC Sport Africa. \"And if they still don't want to change, this is going to encourage other parties going forward.\" The Chineme family were themselves initially reluctant to pursue a claim. \"We never wanted to go to court, because most people will tell you 'You can't challenge the guys in authority - they are so powerful',\" Michael Chineme told the BBC. \"I felt confident and said 'We can't continue like this in this country - justice must be done'.\" Starting in December 2020, the claim took over four years to complete - with Nasarawa United not only denying negligence but also being accused of drawing out the legal process. \"The football club brought a series of preliminary objections and other applications - which were not really of good merit - to try to slow down the case,\" Akinyemi said. Among these were an unsuccessful challenge to the jurisdiction of the NICN to even hear the Chinemes' case, which the club derided as \"manifestly frivolous and gold-digging\". Meanwhile, despite the significance of a player effectively dying on their watch, neither the LMC nor NFF engaged in the case. \"This is a pattern we often observe when we have cases against federations, clubs or leagues,\" said Fifpro's Alves. \"Federations tend to believe they can enjoy some sort of impunity. What is remarkable in this case is that a state court is reminding them that they are as equal in front of the law as any other body. \"Too often federations and clubs forget that.\" Even though Nasarawa United had already been sanctioned - fined just over $15,000 (£11,200) by the NFF in 2020 - for breaching a host of rules, such as not acquiring a qualified doctor for the game, the club consistently denied wrongdoing. Claims of valid insurance and pre-season medical tests were proven false when cross-examination revealed the tests had screened for issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and typhoid rather than cardiac issues. In his ruling, Justice Haastrup said Nasarawa United \"threw every caution to the wind\" when certifying Chineme as fit to play. Nigeria is known for international stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and, further back, Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, who faced heart problems of his own . But some local players - in a sign of the atmosphere enveloping the country's domestic football - turned down a chance to support their late friend. \"I begged three players to testify,\" said Michael Chineme. \"But they were afraid of their career - that if they came, they might be threatened, they might lose their job.\" Now those self-same players are celebrating a case which the family always hoped would deliver justice \"not just for Martins, but for every other footballer\". \"I've been approached by some players and by his friends that still play,\" said Michael. \"They were like: 'Thank you for this, we never knew this was still going on, we never knew you were this resilient'.\" Along with the federation, league and match commissioner, Nasarawa United must pay the family damages, but Michael says the amount will not even cover their legal fees. That is one reason a foundation he established in his brother's name in 2022 will help footballers legally, but not financially. \"I set up Chineme Martins Football Foundation to see the little way it can help those who have been suffering these kinds of issues,\" he said. As Michael admits, the family might easily have given up the legal fight without Fifpro's support. In return, the global players' union is delighted the steadfast Chinemes may have secured a brighter future for footballers across the planet. \"There's a simple message,\" Alves said of the ruling. \"For the people involved on the pitch, this is work. People that organise these competitions have to make sure they're doing it in safe conditions.\"",

      • "content": "By NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, African Energy Chamber ( ). The world is watching Namibia. To be more specific, the energy world is watching. This was evident at the recently concluded Namibian Internation Energy Conference. Ever since oil and gas majors, Rhino Resources, Galp Energia, Shell and TotalEnergies announced massive hydrocarbon discoveries in Namibia's offshore Orange Basin, interest in additional exploration in the Southern African country has been intense. And so has curiosity about how quickly Rhino Resources, Galp Energia, and TotalEnergies, and their partners will be able to finalize their petroleum contracts with Namibia and move on to final investment decision that leads to production. Will their negotiations stall, as we're seeing all too often in African nations, or will the process move forward smoothly? One of the reasons the Orange Basin finds were so exciting - in addition to sheer size, with as much as three billion barrels of oil combined - was the fact that Namibian exploration efforts up to then had been fairly disappointing. Only about 15 wells had been drilled before Rhino Resources Capricornus 1-X, Galp Energia Mopane, Shell's Graff-1 well and TotalEnergies' Venus 1-X find, and none of those earlier efforts yielded commercial quantities of oil or gas. That means the Orange Basin discoveries represent Namibia's first chance to show oil and gas companies what they can expect after announcing discoveries there. Now is the time for Namibia's leadership to show it respects the billions of dollars companies spend on oil and gas production. One of the most practical ways for Namibia to do that is to update its petroleum contracts: They need language that protects oil and gas companies' investments. Namibia's contracts should include what's known as a fiscal stability clause, which would clearly state that if Namibia were to make legislative or regulatory changes - such as new tax requirements - the energy companies signing the contract would be protected from negative economic impacts. Depending on the language of the clause- also known as an“economic rebalancing” or“equalization clause” - contracting companies might be exempt from new tax codes or compensated to make up for legislation that adds to their expenses such as new labor or environmental laws. What matters is, in the end, the companies' return on investment would not be impacted by changes that occurred after their deal was finalized. For Namibia, a newcomer to oil and gas deals, adding a fiscal stability clause to petroleum contracts will be key to retaining the energy industry's intense interest. This Clause Carries a Lot of Weight Guaranteeing oil and gas companies' investments is hardly a new or radical measure. Fiscal stability clauses are common practice and in place in such countries as Guyana, Mozambique, Mexico, and Angola. While I cannot produce a study that proves that these countries have attracted more investment as a result of their clauses, I do know this: When a developing country fails to offer the clauses, they're giving oil and gas companies reason to limit investments there. In a recent paper on financial stability clauses, international consulting company Deloitte commented on the clauses' value. “Stabilisation clauses enhance certainty and predictability which are key ingredients for the success of long term investment projects,” the report states.“Petroleum exploitation is capital intensive and recouping the investment takes much longer than most sectors. Any subsequent changes in the laws of the host state may significantly alter the economics of the economics of a project.” For international oil companies (IOCs), investing in a country without a fiscal stability clause is quite a gamble in an already risky industry. I realize that Namibia has already taken measures to ensure an enabling environment for upstream activity, including making updates to its tax laws, and I applaud those actions. Namibia's legal framework and oil and gas code, in general, are considered investor-friendly. But guaranteeing companies' investments is a critical next step. Time is Precious Not only does Namibia need to add a fiscal stability clause to its petroleum agreements, it needs to do it now. It must also be done alongside local content legislation. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the issue of financial risk will come up during contract negotiations with BW Kudu, Rhino Resources, Galp Energia, and TotalEnergies, and their partners. And that, in turn, could lead to costly project delays, a topic the African Energy Chamber addresses extensively in its soon-to-be-released“The State of African Energy Report.” I encourage Namibian authorities to learn from the delays that have taken place in Mozambique's offshore Rovuma Basin. Natural gas discoveries totaling as much as 17 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) were announced in the early to mid-2010s, but Mozambique's negotiations with operators, including Italian energy major Eni and U.S. firm Anadarko, have dragged on for years. As a result, the only project to be completed so far is the Coral Sul floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project, fed by Coral Field. The FLNG saw a final investment decision (FID) in mid-2017, followed by construction getting underway in 2018 and the project shipping its first cargo in November 2022. This is a positive step, but imagine the economic and energy security benefits Mozambique's natural gas could have yielded without such extensive delays. Then there's the example of the massive oil discoveries made by Tullow Oil in Uganda and Ghana, announced about three months apart from one another in 2006 and 2007. Tullow Oil began producing oil from its Jubilee Field discovery in Ghana in 2010. Contrast that with Tullow's Lake Albert Rift Basin discovery in Uganda. After more than a decade of disputes with the government and no progress, Tullow sold all of its Ugandan assets to Total (now TotalEnergies) in 2020. In 2021, TotalEnergies concluded final agreements to launch Lake Albert resources development, including the Tilenga and Kingfisher upstream oil projects and the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Uganda and Tanzania. TotalEnergies continues to move these projects forward in collaboration with China National Offshore Oil Corporation and Uganda National Oil Company. Unfortunately, climate concerns and net-zero emissions aspirations have made driving oil and gas projects forward considerably more challenging than it was in 2006. TotalEnergies is under heavy pressure from environmental activities to abandon its plans for oil production and the pipeline. They have courageously pushed forward and we must applaud them. Soon Uganda will be an oil producer. So Much to Gain Not only will a fiscal stability clause in Namibian petroleum agreements help prevent delays, acting decisively to protect companies' investments will also position Namibia for more exploration. The Orange Basin is one of several Namibian locations of interest to IOCs. Eco Atlantic's Osprey exploration campaign in Block 2012A of the Walvis Basin, for example, was described as one of Africa's most promising high-impact wells. Meanwhile, Global Petroleum, Namcor, and Aloe Investments are expected to begin exploration in Block 2011A of the Walvis Basin this year. BW Energy is set to drill for more gas on its Petroleum Production License 003 that could lead to developing the Kudu Gas discoveries. Chevron Namibia Exploration Limited continuous to pursue its prospect portfolio offshore Namibia. There is potential for exploration wells to be drilled in Petroleum Exploration License 82 in the Walvis Basin. Namibia's offshore Luderitz Basin and Namib Basin, along with the onshore Owambo and Karoo basins, offer great potential as well. But, again, interest could dry up quickly if companies begin to perceive Namibia as a risky country for investments. I personally don't think so and certainly the African Energy Chamber does not think Namibia is a risky place for investment. Calls for Change The African Energy Chamber is not the first to urge Namibia to take steps to guarantee oil and gas companies' investments. This topic came up in 2020, before the large Orange Basin discoveries. Uaapi Utjavari, then chairperson of the Namibia Petroleum Operators Association (NAMPOA), wrote to Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo to describe the role that fiscal guarantee clauses could play in supporting ongoing investment in Namibian's fledgling oil and gas sector. NAMPOA recommended a legal/fiscal/commercial framework that balanced the needs of the country and investors. “There is a fundamental need for a stable and sustainable business environment so the country and the investors are able to plan ahead and rely on terms agreed upon,” Utjavari wrote.“An economic rebalancing provision provides appropriate security around economic terms, which are critical for large-scale multi-billion dollars project investment/bankability, while not infringing the host country's sovereignty and are a common feature in many petroleum contracts globally.” The recommendations NAMPOA made in 2020 still make sense for Namibia today. The African Energy Chamber would like to see Namibia reap all of the benefits its natural resources can offer, from increased energy security to industrialization and economic growth. Namibia can do that - if it shows a watching energy industry that the country is committed to helping companies realize a reasonable return on their investments. Adding a fiscal stability clause to its contracts is the right move. I encourage Namibia to act now. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of African Energy Chamber. • "description": "Mac-Albert Hengari was arrested on Saturday after allegedly attempting to bribe the woman to withdraw the case.",
      • "content": "Namibia's agriculture minister has been sacked after being accused of raping a 16-year-old girl five years ago. Mac-Albert Hengari was arrested on Saturday after allegedly attempting to bribe the victim, now 21, to withdraw the case against him, local media quote the police as saying. Hengari, who has denied any wrongdoing, is expected to appear in court in the coming hours. This is the first major scandal for Namibia's first female President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, since she took office last month. The statement from the president's office did not indicate the reasons for the dismissal but said Hengari had also been dismissed from the National Assembly. Hengari was nominated to parliament by the president to represent the ruling party, Swapo. He is under investigations for multiple charges related to the case including kidnapping, rape and assault, local media report. The opposition Independent Patriots for Change said Hengari's arrest \"on allegations of rape, kidnapping and forced abortion\" was a \"profound failure of leadership and exposes the hollowness of government rhetoric on gender-based violence\". It said the case came against a backdrop of \"widespread gender violence\", with 4,814 gender-violence cases reported last year. The country has a population of three million. The party also criticised the vetting process, saying the president had appointed Hengari \"despite a criminal investigation having allegedly been opened in November 2024\". President Nandi-Ndaitwah last month unveiled a cabinet described as ground-breaking for female representation - with nine out 14 members being women, including the vice-president. The 72-year-old won November's election with a 58% share of the vote. She is a long-term member of Swapo – which has been in power since the country gained independence in 1990 after a long struggle against apartheid South Africa.
