      • "description": "The paper linked phthalates, commonly found in plastics, to 350,000 deaths globally. But the data come with caveats.",
      • "content": "The news made for an alarming headline recently: Research showed that common chemicals in plastics were associated with 350,000 heart disease deaths across the world in 2018. The statistic came from a study publishe d in the journal eBioMedicine . The authors, a group of researchers at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, estimated that roughly 13 per cent of cardiovascular deaths among 55- to 64-year-olds worldwide that year could be attributed to phthalates, which are used in food packaging, shampoo, toys and more. Research on the effect of phthalates on cardiovascular disease is still emerging, but their link to metabolic risk factors like obesity suggests they could play a role in heart disease. While experts agree that phthalates are harmful, they cautioned that the study relied on complex statistical modelling and a series of assumptions and estimates that make it difficult to determine how many deaths might be linked to the chemicals. “This is an early step of trying to understand the magnitude of the problem,” said Dr Mark Huffman, a cardiologist and a co-director of the global health centre at WashU Medicine in St Louis. But, he added, there’s a need for far more studies to understand the relationship between phthalates and heart health, and what other factors might come into play. THE BACKGROUND Phthalates are found in personal care products like shampoos and lotions, as well as in food containers and packaging. It’s possible to ingest them through food, absorb them through the skin from products containing them or breathe them in as dust. Studies have shown that phthalates are endocrine disrupters, meaning that they can interfere with our hormones. They have been associated with negative effects on reproductive health, pregnancy and birth issues. Some studies have shown an association between phthalates and cardiovascular disease, but there isn’t strong evidence to show that the chemicals directly cause heart issues, said Sung Kyun Park, a professor of epidemiology and environmental sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. There is evidence that phthalates increase the risk of metabolic disorders like obesity and Type 2 diabetes, which can cause cardiovascular disease. One way phthalates may do this is by increasing oxidative stress – cell and tissue damage that happens when there are too many unstable molecules in the body – and by promoting inflammation, said Dr Leonardo Trasande, senior author of the new paper and a professor of paediatricsand population health at NYU. THE RESEARCH In the latest study, researchers attempted to quantify global cardiovascular deaths attributable specifically to one type of phthalate, known as DEHP. One of the most widely used and studied phthalates, DEHP is found in vinyl products including tablecloths, shower curtains and flooring. The researchers relied on estimates from previous research for several measures: Phthalate exposures, the risk of such exposures on cardiovascular deaths and the global burden of cardiovascular disease. They then calculated the share of deaths attributable to phthalate exposures in different countries, Dr Trasande said. The Middle East, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific accounted for nearly three-quarters of these deaths. THE LIMITATIONS This was an observational study that showed a correlation between estimated exposure to the chemical and disease at the population level. Experts said that the methods used were not unusual for studies that model global disease, but that such studies come with caveats. For example, Dr Huffman said, the estimates from the literature that the authors relied on in their calculations may themselves have incorporated some bias or confounding variables, such as socioeconomic status or dietary behaviours, that could relate both to plastic exposure and to cardiovascular disease rates. “A pretty important part of the result of the model is what you put into the model,” Dr Huffman said. The study also relied on an earlier analysis by Dr Trasande to estimate the risk of cardiovascular death from phthalate exposure, after controlling for other known risk factors. But that paper only examined US patients, which means it might not be possible to generalise the results to a global population, where dietary habits, cigarette smoke exposure, physical activity and other cardiovascular risk factors may vary. WHAT’S NEXT What’s clear from the study, experts said, is that we need more research on phthalate exposure and the associated health risks. Though it would be ethically impossible and impractical to do a classic randomised trial, in which one group of people were exposed to phthalates and others were not and they were followed for many years, other types of studies could help more clearly establish a link. One way, Dr Park said, would be to have researchers recruit a large, representative sample of patients, measure their levels of exposure and follow them for years, perhaps until death. Dr Huffman suggested it would also be worthwhile to try out strategies that might reduce exposure levels and then measure any changes in health outcomes. Tracey Woodruff, director of the programme on reproductive health and the environment at the University of California, San Francisco, said that despite the uncertainties in the estimates of the current paper, it is clear that phthalates can increase the risks of preterm birth, reproductive issues and metabolic disorders. To her, the findings only add to the list of reasons to reduce the amount of phthalates in the supply chain. • "description": "There aren’t many cures for people who hear phantom ringing or buzzing noises – but there are ways to manage the condition.",
      • "content": "Tinnitus is the experience of hearing phantom noises, typically in the form of ringing, buzzing or roaring sounds. It is a common and usually harmless condition. According to a 2024 ana lysi s , about 11 per cent of American adults experience tinnitus, and 41 per cent of them hear noises constantly rather than intermittently. But can you make it go away? It’s rare for tinnitus to be cured, but a person’s prognosis depends on what is causing the symptoms. Even if it’s not curable, “there are a lot of good ways to manage it,” said Dr Mohamed Elrakhawy, an ear, nose and throat (or ENT) doctor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. CAUSES OF TINNITUS Tinnitus can have a variety of causes, said Dr Zachary Schwam, an ENT at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Sometimes, he said, it can be a result of tumours , nerve problems , asymmetries in veins, holes in or fluid behind the eardrums, earwax or damage to the bones behind the eardrums. In these cases, it’s typical for tinnitus to occur in only one ear, and it can sometimes resemble the sound of a heartbeat. If your tinnitus presents this way, it’s important to get it checked out by a doctor, Dr Schwam said. But most of the time, tinnitus is a harmless byproduct of hearing loss, said Dr Kenny F Lin, an ENT at Houston Methodist Hospital. “The hair cells of the cochlear nerve endings are damaged and send an altered signal to the brain, which is perceived as a ringing, humming, buzzing or static sound,” he said. People who are regularly exposed to loud noises are also more likely to develop tinnitus, Dr Schwam said. “Enjoy your concerts, enjoy your work, but just make sure you’re using the proper ear protection,” he said. Often, tinnitus is a minor annoyance that becomes less bothersome over time. But in some cases, it can become debilitating, interfering with the ability to work and sleep, Dr Elrakhawy said. Tinnitus has been linked with anxiety, depression and, in rare cases, even suicide . Stress, anxiety and lack of sleep can make tinnitus worse, Dr Schwam said. “I often tell people that those things are not necessarily causing your tinnitus, but they’re certainly not helping,” he said. TREATMENT DEPENDS ON THE CAUSE To determine the cause of tinnitus, a doctor will ask about a person’s clinical history and perform a physical exam. “If it’s only one ear or in both ears, if it’s all the time or comes and goes, if there are certain triggers or situations that make it worse – those all really do help focus on what the next step would be,” Dr Elrakhawy said. A doctor is likely to suggest a hearing test and may also request other types of tests, including MRI or CT scans. If tinnitus is caused by a bone, nerve or circulatory issue, then treating the underlying problem may cure it, Dr Schwam said. But if hearing loss is the cause, then treatments can improve symptoms but may not eliminate them, he said. Typically, tinnitus treatments for people with hearing loss are aimed at reducing the impact on their daily lives, particularly on sleep and their ability to work, Dr Lin said. One popular approach, he said, involves listening to masking sounds such as white noise , ocean or rain sounds, music and the sounds of fans or humidifiers, which can make tinnitus less noticeable. “As long as the brain is able to hear outside sounds, it is less likely to hear the inside sounds,” he said. A hearing aid may also help if a person’s hearing loss is significant enough to warrant one. “Hearing aids amplify sounds that you no longer hear well, so it is essentially a masking device that you wear throughout the day,” Dr Lin said. Some hearing aids even have special tinnitus masking settings that may feed certain frequencies into the ear to optimise masking. Counseling and other forms of therapy can help, too. “We often meet patients that suffer terribly from tinnitus and the negative impact on mood, including anxiety and depression,” said Dr C Matthew Stewart, an ENT at Johns Hopkins Medicine. But when physicians explain what’s going on and assure patients that their tinnitus isn’t dangerous, it can help them cope better, Dr Schwam said. Some patients benefit from cognitive behavioural therapy , a form of psychotherapy that can help people better manage their symptoms, or from tinnitus retraining therapy , which involves counselling along with sound therapy. BE WARY OF MIRACLE CURES If you’re experiencing tinnitus, talk to your primary care provider or ask for a referral to an ENT or audiologist who treats tinnitus, Dr Elrakhawy said. Although there are many over-the-counter supplements and eardrops marketed as tinnitus treatments, he doesn’t know of any that are shown to work. Some of Dr Schwam’s patients have brought over-the-counter eardrops containing heavy metals to their appointments, asking if they might help. “I take a look at the drops, and they have ingredients that I would never put in a human body,” he said. • "description": "After her father died, writer Genevieve Jiang returned home to support her mother through grief. But in doing so, she found herself learning how to live alongside her – not just as a daughter, but as a caregiver and companion through life’s quiet transitions.",
      • "content": "When my father died in July last year, I found myself entering a new chapter with my mother we weren’t quite prepared for. In those early days, there were bills to pay, probate paperwork to file, and endless administrative matters to sort through. We were practical, composed. But beneath that quiet efficiency was a grief that neither of us quite knew how to navigate. My mum had leaned on my dad for over 52 years – emotionally, logistically, financially. After he died, I knew she would need support. I decided to move back home – not out of obligation, but instinct – after staying on my own for more than a decade. We had always been close. While living on my own, I visited them every weekend. We spoke regularly – about what to cook, what to watch, what needed doing that weekend. The everyday kind of closeness. But this was different. This was daily proximity, emotional weight, and the delicate challenge of staying present for someone else while holding space for your own sorrow. Grief has a way of stirring all kinds of emotions. I found myself aching, not just for my dad, but for the quiet expectations that came with caregiving. There were moments – small, sharp ones – when I wished my efforts were more seen, or acknowledged. I was grieving too. But in our family, love is rarely spoken aloud. It comes through doing – through meals prepared, errands run, presence offered. And I had to learn to accept that. Still, we connected in small, significant ways. We sorted through photos, reliving old stories in silence. And then there was the day I took Mum for a walk at East Coast Park – her first visit there in years. I nudged her gently, hoping it might help lift her spirits, even if just for a while. She grumbled about the distance – “So far! Are we there yet?” – but surprised me by climbing onto a stationary bike along the path, her face lighting up like a child trying something new. That moment, fleeting as it was, felt like the start of something. A shift, however slight. The beginning of showing up for each other differently. A NEW RHYTHM These days, I no longer live with her full-time. I spend weekdays at her place – working from a home office I’ve set up – and return to my own flat on weekends. It’s a rhythm that emerged slowly, and for now, it holds. Leaving my full-time job to care for my dad after he was diagnosed with cancer just weeks before he passed was never meant to be permanent. But life has a way of rearranging itself. What began as a short-term change has become a quieter, steadier way of being. Living with my mum again after more than a decade on my own came with its share of adjustments. I wanted to be there for her – to cushion the hardest parts – but I also had to learn how to carve out space for myself. There were legal matters to manage, banking apps she couldn’t navigate, moments when I felt like a personal assistant. And yet, there were also moments of deep tenderness. She began planning simple meals whenever I stayed over, making sure I ate right – as if I were still a teenager. She made an effort not to comment on my habits, like working late nights, even when she clearly disapproved. I recognised these gestures for what they were: Her way of loving me in the only language she’s ever known – care, routine, presence. Growing up, she had always been the steady one. My father, though devoted, had a temper. I was a headstrong teen, often clashing with him. My mum stood between us more times than I can count. As I grew older, I saw how she showed up in quieter ways – preparing food after a long day, sitting with me after personal and professional setbacks, never prying but always there. Now our roles have reversed. I nudge her gently to keep trying new things, whether it’s joining a support group activity, or figuring out how to use an app. I’ve learnt to meet her where she is, instead of where I think she should be. Progress is slow, but every step forward – no matter how small – matters. Our evenings have become a quiet ritual. After dinner, she’ll sit with me as I unwind with a Netflix show. “Why are your shows always so violent?” she’ll ask. Or, “I have no idea what’s going on.” I’ll end up giving her a running commentary, pausing now and then to explain who’s who, or why someone just got stabbed. She’ll nod, half-listening, sometimes pulling up her own show on her phone while mine plays in the background. But she stays. And in her staying, I hear everything she doesn’t say. In this part of the world, the idea of leaving one’s parents to live out their old age alone can still feel unthinkable. Cultural expectations around filial piety run deep. But as families evolve and our lives grow more complex, so too do the ways we care. For me, the question was never whether to be there for my mum. It was how to do so in a way that honours her dignity, while also protecting my own sense of self. My father’s example helped shape that. He was never demonstrative, but his devotion was steadfast. He rose before dawn every day to drive us to school, saved quietly and spent sparingly. His love was in the details. In many ways, I now understand caregiving the same way – not as grand gestures, but as the act of staying. Sitting beside someone when it matters. Carrying the load when they can’t. Being present, even when it’s unglamorous. Especially when it’s unglamorous – like setting up her Singpass account, accompanying her to the lawyer’s office to sign a single document, or going through paperwork she can’t quite make sense of. This has been a season of grief and transition, but also of growth. We’ve had our share of difficult days, fights and friction, but we’ve also learnt how to just be. How to honour the past without being stuck in it. How to sit with each other in the present, no matter how ordinary. I don’t know what the next season will look like. But I do know this: For all the complexities of mother-daughter relationships , for all the things left unsaid – there’s something profoundly healing in learning to show up for each other. In the end, it’s not always about fixing, or saving, or changing. Sometimes, love just looks like staying the course. Quietly. Faithfully. Together. • "content": "Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone could not help but applaud the performance of striker Alexander Sorloth after the Norwegian scored all four goals in their 4-0 win against Real Sociedad in LaLiga on Saturday. Sorloth completed the fastest hat-trick in LaLiga history in the opening 11 minutes before adding a fourth goal to seal the rout on the half-hour. \"I was very happy with the team's first half in general. Alex, of course, is a whole different matter,\" Simeone told a press conference. \"He had a fantastic night, especially those first 45 minutes, where he decisively finished every ball that came his way. That allowed us to take control of the game and take it to a place we never imagined possible before the game started.\" Despite becoming Atletico's leading scorer in the league this season with 17 goals, Sorloth has started more games from the bench (19) than featured in team's starting line-ups (13). \"If we go by the numbers, he's scored more goals coming on in the second half - except for today, obviously,\" Simeone said. The Argentine coach was then quick to outline the forward's other strengths. \"What I like about him is that he's important in every moment and context of the game you can imagine,\" Simeone continued. \"If we need to attack, he gives us a strong offensive weight in the area. If we counterattack, he has good passing for that. And if we're closed down and have to defend, his physicality gets us out of uncomfortable situations. \"He's playing the game the team needs and is making the most of his football and his goalscoring.\" Sorloth, who joined Atletico from Villarreal last August, gave credit to his teammates for contributing to his clinical performance. \"The balls were falling at my feet, my teammates were giving me really good passes,\" he said. \"I'm very happy... I hope to be in LaLiga for many more years and have more games like this. I struggled to get the season off to a good start. In October and November, I started to improve. Now my teammates know me better. \"It was the same situation as last season when I scored four goals against Real Madrid and had a shot hit the post. Today was like a flashback.\" Sorloth spent two seasons on loan at Sociedad from Red Bull Leipzig between 2021-2023.",

      • "description": "The quirky architecture of this house in Singapore is as much an attraction as the art collection inside.",
      • "content": "It was with delight that I encountered an artwork by local artist Dawn Ng the moment I stepped into this inter-terrace house. The archival pigment print Some Will Fall In Love With Life And Drink It From A Fountain That Is Pouring Like An Avalanche Coming Down The Mountain from her Clocks series offers a Technicolor punch to a white wall. Is it a rainbow mountain or a coloured-in pebble, writ large? The artwork itself is enigmatic but what strikes me more is the insouciant juxtaposition of the chromatic picture with colourful baskets atop an antique timber cabinet as if to say: Art, like a piece of furniture or even tableware, should be enjoyed without inhibition in a home. The home in question belongs to a 40-something medical professional who prefers to be unnamed. Art is her passion and here in this dwelling designed by Wu Yen Yen, the founder of Genome Architects, she can finally display many pieces that had for a time been stored away. Both client and architect were secondary school classmates and so working together on the house was casual and inhibited. “I sat next to her in class! It was a fun collaboration. It’s my first time building a house, but Yen Yen knew what I wanted and made the process easy,” said the homeowner, who had grown up in Serangoon, and sought to build a house here. The brief? To design a three-storey house to enjoy her art collection and pets in, and to future-proof it for her parents to eventually consider moving in to live with her, shared Wu. The pets are two cats that happily roam this spacious abode. The parents have not moved in yet even at the request of their filial daughter but after visiting the home, they are giving it serious contemplation. The art is a vital part of the narrative. The homeowner began collecting about 20 years ago, starting with Australian Aboriginal paintings and textiles. “I was always drawn to ethnic and tribal designs and crafts, as well as contemporary sculptural and 3D pieces,” she explained, adding that she usually sources from local galleries and art fairs. Not surprisingly, gallery owners have become close acquaintances. “Friends like Stephanie Fong from FOST Gallery and Richard Koh from Richard Ho Fine Art (RKFA) came by and gave suggestions on how to display some of the pieces,” said the homeowner. One such advice was the placement of Kwodrent’s Arrangement in Monochrome installation next to the staircase. Being at eye level, one can come up close to scrutinise the acrylic polypropylene loop pins and polyamide cable ties ‘bouquets’. “The art installer also gave great ideas on where to hang certain works,” said the homeowner. “I also wanted to display most of the bigger art works because I had limited storage space.” The house is a perfect foil for the art without pandering to the white cube art gallery typology. It is ‘art-in-house’ in the manner of mixing the elemental and prosaic, such as an abstract piece by Indonesian artist Syagini Ratna Wulan above the television. But Wu’s architecture also makes this project ‘house-as-art’. Firstly, the building looks nothing like its neighbours – a Spanish-style, terracotta roof and vanilla-walled building on one side, and an uncharacteristic white box on the other. Its facade is a considered jumble of features not typically associated with domestic architecture, particularly a two-storey, arched brick surface with arched screen doors and a three-storey glass curved wall that fronts a spiral staircase. The former is stoic, suggestive of ecclesiastical structures and blocks out the sun; the latter is fluid, transparent and lets in copious daylight. The pairing is unorthodox but then again, as Wu explains, the homeowner was most happy to explore unexpected materials, forms and colours. “I’ve always liked brickwork, geometry and pattern, clean lines and quirky designs,” she said. “I told Yen Yen that I wanted a house with good natural light, is well crafted and easy to clean. I also wanted a spiral staircase, and she delivered!” Wu approached the design of the outside and inside of the dwelling differently. “Externally, the vaulted roof, which continues into the attic, the brick wall and screen, and the circular glass staircase, establishes a strong visual identity in its play of formal composition, depth and tactility,” she said. In contrast, distinct volumes and voids in clean, solid, neutral colours come together to create a “quiet” three-storey interior, where art can be meaningfully displayed throughout, and the inhabitants can feel peaceful. Apart from many white surfaces, a colour-block of moss green on the first storey frames the entrance door, and hides the powder room door and a foldaway staircase to a mezzanine-cum-store room. It extends to define the kitchen joinery at the rear of the house where full-length glass doors open to the backyard. There is terrazzo too (cladding the pantry counter on the second storey), and metal framing the fenestration. Inside the house, white metal mesh is used for the balustrades and flooring at parts. “They are expressed as lightweight and porous so that the connective areas are not visually broken up,” Wu highlighted. This is also genius in enhancing light and airflow through the narrow section, and allowing the artwork to be seen from the different levels. Along the left party wall, Wu has designed parts of the house to be entirely see-through from the front to rear, as well as from the first storey up to the attic level where the homeowner has her bedroom and an art storeroom. This wall is where the homeowner mounts her largest pieces: Yeoh Choo Kuan’s Sun Rays Through the Clouds, Sabri Idrus’ Flux, Wayan Novi’s Tropical Happiness #2 and Khairulddin Wahab’s In the Margins. She chose to place these colourful pieces facing her parents’ room. They become the view through large swivel doors that double as canvases with art hook incorporated into them. These doors are part of a future-proofing strategy, explained Wu. Inside the parents’ large en-suite bedroom are sliding doors that provide the option of creating two adjoining private rooms, connected to a potential caregiver’s room toward the front of the house. The second storey and attic have open spaces that overlook the tall void like internal terraces. Here, cabinets exhibit the homeowner’s other curiosities, such as an amazing collection of baskets collected from travels, auctions, thrift stores and flea markets. “I’ve always found weaving to be a fascinating craft, as it requires significant mathematical skills and a great memory,” said the homeowner. Her dogged passion saw her hunting down Werregue baskets woven by local indigenous communities of Colombia where she travelled to a few years ago. “The weaving technique was unlike any I had seen. I spent the entire trip looking out for them and luckily, found some on the last day,” she shared. Sometimes, the pieces come to her in star-matched ways, as she recounted: “One of the first baskets I collected, which is still one of my favourites, is the huge Lombok basket that I got from the previous tenant of a black-and-white rental home in the Seletar airbase. I had always wanted one and it came together with the first place I stayed on my own!” On the third storey is another wondrous collection displayed on open shelves, of Isan betal nut boxes that the homeowner purchased over the years from a good friend who runs Isan Gallery in Singapore. “I generally gravitate towards geometric designs and I like how some of the boxes have seemingly ‘modern’ motifs but are actually more than 50 years old.” Wu highlighted that while the house was designed to display art, it was also meant to be functional. For example, the front elevation screens shield from the southwest-facing sunlight. She used solar simulation to inform some of her design decisions, such as where to place a triple-volume space (the front of the house) and windows to mitigate stack effect, enhance air movement, and frame views. Being a transitional space, the spiral staircase was also placed here as a solar buffer. “We have designed this circular staircase to be as lightweight as possible, so that it is a see-through sculptural form that is backlit from the inside while still letting in abundant indirect natural light,” Wu elaborated on the design. The curved windows at the front next to the spiral staircase can be slid open to help create airy interiors. This is a crazy detail, I commented as I observed the curved sliding tracks. Wu agreed that it was difficult to both design and construct. “We also overlapped glass pieces at the higher areas so that the stairwell can be constantly ventilated passively. Considering the steps, landings, material sizes, dimensional tolerances and need for structural rigidity, working with curved glass, curved steel and a curved staircase.” On how the house has met her expectations, the homeowner commented: “It has a lot of natural light and great volumes of space, which give greater visual impact to the artwork. Friends have remarked that the house has good curb appeal, an interesting internal layout and the spiral staircase gets great reviews!” With more space for her art, she would love to add “a sculpture by Kim Lim, an ecriture by Park Seo Bo and a basket by Jeremy Frey”. So far, none of the artists whose work she has in her home have visited but I would like to think they would be more than happy to pay a visit and see their art bringing joy to both the home and homeowner.",

      • "description": "President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is facing resentment from Duterte's supporters as well as a challenge from his own sister, Senator Imee Marcos, says this political science professor.",
      • "content": "BANGKOK: It’s been two months since former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face potential prosecution for crimes against humanity. Duterte’s arrest has angered his supporters and caused polarisation to worsen in the lead-up to important parliamentary elections on May 12. The election could be a referendum on the current president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, whose approval rating fell to 25 per cent in March after Duterte’s arrest. It had been 42 per cent a month earlier. Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, meanwhile, has seen her approval rating increase to 59 per cent, despite the fact she was impeached by the House of Representatives earlier this year for threatening to assassinate Marcos. Some of Marcos’ former allies are now drifting towards Sara Duterte, potentially setting her up for a successful run for the presidency herself in 2028. FAMILY FEUDING Marcos is not only dealing with the resentment of some segments of the public, he’s also facing a challenge from his own sister, Imee Marcos, a senator. Imee Marcos conducted several hearings in the Senate to probe into the procedures followed by the national police and other government agencies in implementing Duterte’s arrest warrant, which had been issued through Interpol. Right from the start, she denounced Duterte’s surrender to the ICC as a violation of the Philippine constitution and the country’s sovereignty. She asserted the court did not have jurisdiction over the Philippines after it withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019. In a press conference on Apr 29, Imee Marcos announced a Senate committee is recommending the filing of criminal charges against the head of the Department of Justice and other officials who arrested and turned him over to the ICC. On May 7, the ombudsman asked these officials to respond to the Senate committee complaint within 10 days. Imee Marcos has political motivations of her own for acting in this way. She is seeking another term herself and has been trailing in public opinion polls. To make the political machinations even more complex, Sara Duterte has now endorsed Imee Marcos’ bid for re-election. Some of Duterte’s supporters, however, have been sceptical about Marcos’ motives in conducting the hearings. CONTROLLING THE NARRATIVE Though Duterte’s arrest has dominated the headlines in the Philippines, it’s unclear whether Marcos’ declining popularity as president is tied solely to this incident. Many Filipinos supported Duterte’s arrest, according to one poll in March. And Marcos’ government has also been criticised for the state of the economy. But at least one observer has pointed to the Duterte family’s effective use of TikTok to control the narrative around his arrest, portraying it as a kidnapping. Sara Duterte has recently claimed her name is on the ICC prosecutor’s list of those who will be arrested next. It is also important to note Duterte’s supporters have resorted to the dissemination of fake news and disinformation against the Marcos administration. His supporters have also aimed their attacks on the ICC pre-trial judges, as well as victims of the drugs war during Duterte’s time in office. THE 2028 PRESIDENTIAL RACE The outcome of the elections in the Philippines next week will no doubt have short- and medium-term implications for the country’s politics. First, if all nine of the Senate candidates backed by the Marcos administration win, they would expand his bloc of supporters in the chamber. This bloc may then vote to convict Sara Duterte when her impeachment case moves to a Senate trial. If she’s convicted, she would be banned from running for president in 2028. But it’s uncertain if two-thirds of senators would vote to convict – the threshold necessary for impeachment. Some pro-Marcos and independent senators may be wary of antagonising loyal Duterte supporters. If Sara Duterte is acquitted, this would likely only boost her bid for the presidency. The ICC’s pre-trial chamber will hold a hearing in September that will be watched closely by pro- and anti-Duterte forces in the Philippines. On May 8, the chamber rejected a petition filed by Duterte’s defence team to excuse two judges over alleged bias. His loyal supporters will likely increase their attacks against the ICC, the victims of Duterte’s drugs war, and the Marcos administration through the use of fake news and disinformation as the trial progresses. If Duterte is convicted by the court prior to the 2028 election, it will certainly be used as a campaign issue by both sides, too. And this will only further worsen polarisation in the Philippines. • "content": "KYIV: Major European powers threw their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire on Saturday (May 10), with the backing of US President Donald Trump , and threatened President Vladimir Putin with \"massive\" new sanctions if he did not accept within days. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Ukraine set the start of the ceasefire for May 12 at a meeting in Kyiv , during which they held a phone call with Trump. \"So all of us here together with the US are calling Putin out. If he is serious about peace, then he has a chance to show it,\" British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a press conference. \"No more ifs and buts, no more conditions and delays.\" Soon after the European leaders' announcement, the Kremlin appeared to pour scorn on it. \"We hear many contradictory statements from Europe. They are generally confrontational in nature rather than aimed at trying to revive our relations. Nothing more,\" Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agency Interfax. Peskov was later quoted by the state TASS news agency as saying that Russia would consider the ceasefire proposal, while Moscow has its own position. Western sanctions against Russia have been toughened repeatedly since its full-scale invasion in 2022, without ending the war. But following through on the threat would be a sign of growing Western unity after months of unpredictability in US policy since Trump's return to the White House in January. After engaging directly with Russian officials, clashing publicly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and briefly cutting vital military aid to Kyiv, Washington has patched up ties with Ukraine and signed an agreement giving the US preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals. Trump, who did not immediately comment publicly on the European leaders' remarks, has also signalled frustration with what Washington views as Putin's foot-dragging over a ceasefire. \"In the event that the ceasefire is violated, massive sanctions will be prepared, in coordination between the Europeans and the United States,\" French President Emmanuel Macron said. By imposing new sanctions, the White House would be aligning itself more closely with Western Europe, which has been rattled by a trade war in which Trump has imposed tariffs on them and other countries and has suggested he might not come to the defence of NATO allies that underspend on their defence. Zelenskyy said he and the visiting leaders had agreed the unconditional ceasefire must start on Monday and cover air, sea and land. If Russia refused, it would face new sanctions, including the strengthening of punitive measures targeting its energy and banking sectors, he said. The leaders later issued a joint statement summing up the contents of the proposed 30-day ceasefire and saying its main purpose was \"to make room for diplomacy\". They welcomed support for the proposal from both Europe and the United States and said that if Russia sought to apply conditions, \"this can only be considered as an effort to prolong the war and undermine diplomacy\". Peskov had been quoted as saying on Friday that Russia supported the implementation of a 30-day ceasefire, but only with due consideration of \"nuances\". In remarks to US broadcaster ABC broadcast earlier on Saturday, Peskov had suggested Western military assistance for Ukraine must stop for a temporary ceasefire to take effect. \"Otherwise it will be an advantage for Ukraine,\" he said. TRUMP PHONE CALL Macron said that if the ceasefire went ahead, it would be monitored mainly by the US and European countries would contribute. Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president who is now a senior security official, derided the idea of giving Russia an option between being sanctioned or giving Ukrainian forces an opportunity to rebuild. \"Shove these peace plans up your pangender arses!\" he wrote on X. The European leaders said the terms of a peace deal would be negotiated during the 30-day pause in fighting. \"We have no illusions that the ceasefire will be breached,\" Zelenskyy said. On the eve of the summit, the US embassy in Kyiv warned of a \"potentially significant\" air attack in the coming days. When the European leaders arrived in Kyiv by train on Saturday, a screen on the platform announced the arrival of the \"Bravery Express\". Zelenskyy accompanied them as they paid their respects at a Kyiv memorial honouring Ukrainian soldiers killed in the war. The visit falls on the final day of a May 8-10 ceasefire declared by Putin that Ukraine did not accept, denouncing it as a sham. Both sides have accused each other of violating it. Reuters journalists at a field hospital near the front line in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region saw soldiers being brought in with combat injuries sustained since the Russian ceasefire began. \"There hasn’t been any ceasefire, shelling has continued just as before, drones are flying just like before, the same with explosives being dropped. Nothing has changed at all,\" said a wounded soldier who gave his name as Stanislav.",

      • "content": "SOUTHAMPTON, England :Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said dropping points against bottom side Southampton in a 0-0 Premier League draw on Saturday will result in a nervy final two games of the season in his side's pursuit of a Champions League place for next season. Southampton's hard-earned point not only means they avoid being the joint-worst team in Premier League history but also a tougher finish for City, who must hold off the chasing pack of Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. \"The result, of course, it's a missed opportunity today, we know that,\" said Guardiola, who failed to beat a bottom team for the first time in his nine seasons at City. \"It happened. Now, prepare the (FA Cup) final, less time (for) Bournemouth and then Fulham,\" he added, with City playing Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on May 17 at Wembley. \"We have three games left - the FA Cup and two games in the Premier League and I didn't expect anything different from one month ago in that we will need to fight until the end.\" City had won four straight league matches and were poised to move level on points with second-placed Arsenal but the momentum stalled at St Mary's. They are only two points above the three teams below them in the battle for a top-five finish. While Southampton have conceded a Premier League-high 82 goals this season, they kept City out by defending in numbers, which drew criticism from Guardiola and defender Ruben Dias. \"It was difficult,\" Guardiola said. \"Eleven players on the penalty spot. I didn't expect they would defend so, so deep. Defensively we were brilliant. But we missed the last actions that break the result.\" Dias echoed his manager's view. \"It's frustrating to play a team like that,\" he said. \"They didn't want to play. Just wasting time the whole game.\" One positive was the return of Erling Haaland, who missed six weeks with injury. The Norwegian, who remains third in the league's scoring chart with 21 goals, played until the end. \"We didn't expect him to play 90,\" Guardiola said. \"But the way the game was going, we needed people in the box.\"",

      • "content": "JERUSALEM: Hamas's armed wing released a video on Saturday (May 10) showing two Israeli hostages alive in the Gaza Strip, with one of the two men calling to end the 19-month-long war. The pair were identified by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum campaign group as Elkana Bohbot and Yosef Haim Ohana, who were kidnapped during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the war. The undated three-minute video footage released by Hamas's Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades shows one of the hostages, 36-year-old Bohbot, visibly weak and lying on the floor wrapped in a blanket. The second hostage, Ohana, 24, speaks in Hebrew urging the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of all remaining captives - a similar message to statements made by other hostages, likely under duress, in previous videos released by Hamas. In a statement, Bohbot's family said that \"Elkana and Yosef are crying out to be saved. While all the people of Israel hear their calls, a handful of decision-makers refuse to listen,\" echoing criticism of the Israeli government for failing to bring back the hostages. \"How much more can we bear? How much more can they endure? The fact that they are still there is a disgrace,\" the family said. Late Saturday, Israeli demonstrators calling for the release of the hostages and an end of the war gathered outside the defence ministry headquarters in the coastal city of Tel Aviv. AFP images showed some protesters holding pictures of the hostages and placards that read \"we can save the rest\" and \"all of them now\". UNCERTAINTY Bohbot, a Colombian-Israeli, was seen bound and injured in the face in footage from the day of the Hamas attack, and his family have expressed concern about his health. Bohbot and Ohana, both abducted by Palestinian militants from the site of a music festival, are among 58 hostages held in Gaza since the 2023 attack, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead. Hamas also holds the remains of an Israeli soldier killed in a 2014 war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the fate of three hostages presumed alive was unclear, without naming them. \"We know with certainty that 21 hostages are alive ... and there are three others whose status, sadly, we do not know,\" Netanyahu said in a video shared on his Telegram channel. Israel resumed its military offensive across the Gaza Strip on March 18, after a two-month truce that saw the release of dozens of hostages. Since the ceasefire collapsed, Hamas has released several videos of hostages, including of the two appearing in Saturday's video. Israel says the renewed offensive aims to force Hamas to free the remaining captives, although critics charge that it puts them in mortal danger. Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said on Saturday that at least 2,701 people have been killed since Israel resumed its campaign in Gaza, bringing the overall death toll since the war broke out to 52,810.",

      • "content": "VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV signalled on Saturday (May 10) he would continue with the vision and reforms of Pope Francis , telling the world's Catholic cardinals the late pontiff left a \"precious legacy\" that must carry on. In his first meeting with all the cardinals since his election as pontiff on May 8, Leo also asked the senior clerics to renew their commitment to major Church reforms enacted by the landmark Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Leo said Francis , who died on April 21, broadly had a vision of opening the staid 1.4-billion-member Church to the modern world, had left an \"example of complete dedication to service\". \"Let us take up this precious legacy and continue on the journey,\" the new pope told the cardinals . The pontiff also asked the clerics to \"renew together our complete commitment\" to the reforms enacted by the Council, which included celebrating the Mass in local languages rather than Latin and pursuing dialogue with other religions. He cited Francis ' focus on \"courageous and trusting dialogue with the contemporary world in its various components and realities\". Francis was pope for 12 years and often garnered criticism from conservative cardinals , who said he was watering down the Church's doctrine on issues such as inclusion of LGBT Catholics and women's leadership. Leo , the former US Cardinal Robert Prevost , was a relative unknown on the global stage before his election as pontiff. He had spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru before serving as a senior Vatican official for the past two years. The new pope said on Saturday he had taken his papal name partly to honor Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903), who was known as an advocate for social justice and pushed for fair pay and treatment of workers during the industrial revolution. Leo XIV said the Church must now take the lead in facing newer threats to workers, such as artificial intelligence. He said AI posed \"new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour\". Leo 's two-hour meeting with the cardinals took a different format to that used by previous pope s, who would typically offer a speech and expect the clerics only to listen. This time, Leo gave a prepared address and then opened the floor to any cardinal who wanted to make a comment - allowing the clerics to voice their opinions and concerns about the main issues facing the global Church. \"He listened very carefully, but he knows he's going to have to make the decisions,\" Irish Cardinal Sean Brady told Reuters. \"But we're here to help him\". Spanish Cardinal Aquilino Bocos Merino described the meeting as \"very cordial and communal\". CHINA DEAL COMES UP Leo greeted each of the cardinals individually as they left the meeting, which was held in the same small Vatican auditorium where the cardinals had been gathering in the days before the conclave to discuss who should be the next pope . Czech Cardinal Dominik Duka said one topic that came up was the situation of Catholics in communist China. The Vatican and China in 2018 signed a controversial deal on the appointment of bishops in the country, which gives Beijing some input into their selection. Conservatives have attacked the still-secret deal as a sell-out, but Duka told Reuters it was necessary to keep a dialogue open in places where the Church is oppressed, comparing it to dialogue between the Vatican and eastern European countries during the Cold War. German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, who openly clashed with Francis on issues concerning Catholic moral teaching, told Reuters that Saturday's encounter was \"very good and harmonious.\" To be elected as pope during the May 7-8 secret conclave at the Sistine Chapel, Leo required a two-thirds majority of 89 of the 133 voting cardinals . Madagascar Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana told Reuters that Leo received more than 100 votes at the final ballot on the afternoon of May 8.",

      • "content": "PROVIDENCE: Investors are hopeful that US-China trade talks this weekend will cool a trade war between the world's two largest economies and dispel some of the uncertainty clouding financial markets, though few expect a major breakthrough just yet. The highly anticipated meeting in Switzerland could mark one of the biggest developments since US President Donald Trump launched sweeping tariffs on April 2, which threw the global trade landscape into chaos and set off extreme market volatility. \"This is the mother of all negotiations,\" said Alejo Czerwonko, chief investment officer, Emerging Markets Americas, at UBS. \"There are hundreds of billions of dollars of trade on the line, a 145 per cent tariff on Chinese exports that amounts to some sort of de facto embargo and grievances that extend well beyond trade.\" As of 1810 GMT on Saturday (May 10), the US-China trade talks in Geneva had adjourned for the day and were set to continue on Sunday, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Recently, investors have expressed optimism that the worst-case trade scenarios would not come to pass, and pointed to signs of de-escalation between the US and China as a reason behind a rebound in equities. But despite comments by Trump ahead of the talks suggesting a lower level of Chinese tariffs, and a trade deal announced on Thursday between the US and Britain, many market participants said they were not expecting major breakthroughs this weekend. Rather, they confined themselves to hoping that nothing goes wrong when the two sides come face-to-face for the first formal round of what may be protracted negotiations. \"We're still doubtful that direct US-China negotiations will lead to a 'grand compromise',\" said Thierry Wizman, global FX and rates strategist at Macquarie, in a note to clients. IMMEDIATE PACT SEEN AS UNLIKELY Both the U.S. and China may want, or even need, to reach a deal, said Liqian Ren, director of Modern Alpha at WisdomTree Asset Management. At this early stage, however, there seems to be little incentive to do so rapidly, she added. \"Each still wants to see how the other side copes with negative headwinds,\" Ren said. \"Right now, the market is maybe a little bit too optimistic in terms of what China and the US can achieve and how fast events will move.\" Trade tensions between the two nations escalated last month, when the US boosted tariffs on all Chinese imports to a whopping 145 per cent, and China then raised levies on US imports to 125 per cent. On Friday, comments by Trump that an 80 per cent tariff on Chinese goods \"seems right\" - making his first suggestion of a specific alternative to the 145 per cent levies - created some hope of progress toward resolving the dispute. The benchmark S&P 500 stock index has already erased the steep losses seen in the immediate aftermath of the tariffs announcement on April 2, although businesses continue to warn investors of their impact, and the uncertainty they create, in earnings-related comments. The S&P 500 remains down about 8 per cent from its February all-time high and roughly 4 per cent for the year. Amid the tariff chaos, weak consumer sentiment surveys and other \"soft data\" have raised concerns about US growth, although most economic data has indicated resilience in the economy. EYEING MARKET VOLATILITY Volatility, meanwhile, remains. The Cboe Volatility Index, the options-based measure of investor anxiety, hovered around 22 late on Friday - well below its recent closing high of 52.33 in early April, but above its longer-term median of 17.6. One of the factors curbing that volatility so far has been the high cost of establishing short positions betting on future market declines, said WisdomTree's Ren. \"When a single (social media post) from the president can make the market move 10 per cent, it becomes very costly\" to establish those positions, Ren said. Equities soared on April 9 after Trump paused many of the heftiest tariffs for 90 days. Still, markets were poised for more volatility ahead, said Matt Gertken, head of geopolitical strategy at BCA, a macroeconomic investment research firm. Gertken said the firm's best advice was to \"sell on strength\". Any signs of progress in the initial discussions would be welcome, and allow China to devote more energy to its domestic economic problems, said Andrew Mattock, a portfolio manager at Matthews Asia. \"To talk about any other scenario, you end up with a lose-lose outcome,\" he warned. TOUGHEST DEAL TO NEGOTIATE Despite the relatively fast agreement with Britain, Claudio Irigoyen, head of global economics research at BofA Securities, cautioned that other deals would be harder to hammer out, with China being the toughest. \"I can see trade deals coming with India, Japan and maybe South Korea, down the road,\" he said. \"China - this is the most complicated and will be the last one to come,\" in part because the geopolitical relationship is entangled with the trade ties. Investors are concerned that negative scenarios have not been factored into markets. \"If we come out of Geneva with people using incendiary language and strong disagreements, I don't think that's priced in,\" said Czerwonko of UBS. The market would probably be content with only modest signs of progress, several investors said. \"We don't need happy talk,\" said Gertken.",

      • "description": "Using a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330, the new flights to Tokyo will launch on May 12.",
      • "content": "On Monday, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines will launch a new route between Seattle and Tokyo. The new route will be operated by a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 aircraft, which will fly daily to Narita Airport. It will become the group's first new long-haul route from Seattle. Thanks to the merger between the two airlines, approved by the US Department of Transport in September last year, Alaska Airlines is able to launch widebody operations through Hawaiian's Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 fleet. Flights between Seattle and Seoul are set to begin later this year. The new service to Tokyo is important for several reasons. Indeed, it marks the start of Alaska Air Group's widebody flying from Seattle, but it also signifies additional competition on a route that is already well-served, generally speaking. Three other airlines already connect Seattle to the Japanese capital, making Alaska Air Group's first long-haul venture an interesting choice. 4 Airlines Flying Between Seattle & Tokyo Passengers have plenty of choice when it comes to the Seattle to Tokyo market. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium , four airlines will be serving the route this year - the most this sector has ever seen. This includes Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and soon, Hawaiian/Alaska. Alaska Air Group plans to launch its flights as of May 12, at a daily frequency. Ben Minicucci, Alaska Air Group's CEO had previously said that from the carrier's Seattle hub, they will \"conveniently connect travelers from across our network as they head to Asia and beyond.\" The new Tokyo route forms part of the carrier's ambitious plan to operate to at least 12 long-haul destinations from Seattle by 2030. Delta Air Lines offers the most seats per month in the sector with its A350s and A330neos. Hawaiian Airlines comes second, and All Nippon Airways third. While Japan Airlines offers the lowest number of seats per flight, its Boeing 787s are configured with very dense premium cabins, capitalizing on higher-yielding passengers. Airline Airport served Aircraft Number of non-economy seats Time of daily departure from Seattle Delta Air Lines Haneda Airport Airbus A330-900 & Airbus A350-900 57 / 80 11:25 Japan Airlines Haneda Airport Boeing 787-9 79 13:30 All Nippon Airways Narita Airport Boeing 787-9 53 16:30 Hawaiian Airlines / Alaska Airlines Narita Airport Airbus A330-200 18 13:30 Success In A Competitive Market? Alaska Air Group will offer about 190,000 seats per year on this route at a daily frequency on the A330. Not only will they need to rely on connecting traffic over Seattle , but they will also have to compete against the 529,000 seats offered by the three other airlines in the same sector. Loads for the other three have been quite good, though. While this is no indication of how profitable the route has been for them, load factors hint as to whether the route has been performing well or not. Data from the US Department of Transportation shows the following performance for 2024. Average load factor Airline Onboards Seats 85% DL 171,000 202,000 84% JL 118,000 140,000 77% NH 103,000 134,000 75 Years Of Operation Northwestern Airlines, with a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser , is understood to be one of the first airlines to operate on the Seattle to Tokyo route in 1949. The airline has operated the route since then, switching to Delta Air Lines after the two companies merged in 2010. United Airlines also joined the sector for a significant amount of time, beginning in 1983. Similarly, it connected the Japanese capital to Portland. The carrier continued to operate the route through the 2000s, ending its flights in 2014. This came as the airline decided to shift its strategy in two primary ways: Reducing stopover flights beyond Tokyo. At this point, for example, the carrier had operated a medium-haul route network from the Japanese capital onwards to other destinations in Asia. This included flights to Bangkok, Singapore and Taipei. Interestingly enough, it has now backtracked on this strategy of dropping one-stop flights from Tokyo, having recently launched its new route to Ulaanbataar (Mongolia), for example. Shifting long-haul capacity to key US hubs for additional European flights. Services to Asia were proving less profitable in comparison to its European network. The airline thought it best to move long-haul capacity away from the West Coast towards Houston, Washington Dulles, and Chicago for flights to Europe. In July 2012, United's Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways decided to launch flights on the Seattle route. It has continued to operate the route since. At the end of March 2019, Japan Airlines also joined in.",

      • "content": "BOURNEMOUTH, England :Ollie Watkins flicked in a first-half winner as Aston Villa, down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes, beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to boost their hopes of playing in the Champions League again next season. Watkins broke the deadlock in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, after a VAR check for offside, with the lightest of touches to a Morgan Rogers cross for his 16th goal of the league campaign. The visitors, who rose to sixth, had Jacob Ramsey sent off for a second yellow card in the 80th to set up a nervous finish at the Vitality Stadium as late-goal specialists Bournemouth finally came to life but could not find an equaliser. Villa are level on 63 points with Newcastle United and Chelsea, fourth and fifth respectively before meeting at St James' Park on Sunday, and two clear of Nottingham Forest, who host Leicester City, in the battle for Champions League places. Villa have played a game more than all three rivals, who are only two points behind third-placed Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's side dropped points in a 0-0 draw at already-relegated bottom side Southampton earlier on Saturday. \"We are in Europe; Conference League, Europa League or Champions League,\" said Villa manager Unai Emery, whose side are sure of finishing at least seventh with eighth placed Brentford unable to catch them. \"Of course, we try to get our best dreams in Europe, playing Champions League again, but still we have matches to play, and there are other teams in front of us. \"To play in Europe for the third year in a row, I am so happy.\" Bournemouth, who stunned second-placed Arsenal 2-1 last weekend and could have moved up to eighth, remain in 10th spot with their outside challenge for Europe running out of steam with Brentford and Brighton two points clear. Should Manchester City defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final this month, an eighth-place finish would secure qualification for the Conference League. \"We are in a worse position than we were a couple of hours ago but we have to keep fighting,\" manager Andoni Iraola told Sky Sports television. Watkins' goal was his 75th in the league for Villa, taking him ahead of Gabriel Agbonlahor as the club's all-time top scorer in the Premier League era. \"I’ve had eyes on breaking that record since joining the club; you need to celebrate wins like that as it’s a great achievement,\" he said. Unai Emery's side, beaten by finalists Paris St Germain in this year's Champions League quarter-finals, had two chances before Watkins' breakthrough, with Marco Asensio hitting the post in the 43rd with an effort that fired up his side. Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga then had to make a double save from a Boubacar Kamara header and Matty Cash who nodded back the rebound. Bournemouth, starting with three changes from the Arsenal game, had only one shot on target in a first half with only two more shots than yellow cards (five). The response to the goal was tame for much of the second half but the hosts came alive after Ramsey walked. Antoine Semenyo shot wide in the 81st and Evanilson had a header palmed away by Emiliano Martinez. Semenyo then had an effort cleared off the line by Cash under pressure after a save from Martinez five minutes into stoppage time.",

      • "content": "Lazio substitute Matias Vecino struck a stoppage-time equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at home to 10-man Juventus in the battle for Champions League qualifying places in Serie A on Saturday. Juve broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Randal Kolo Muani, who nodded past goalkeeper Christos Mandas, before Vecino levelled with a header six minutes into added time. Juventus had defender Pierre Kalulu sent off on the hour mark for a foul on striker Taty Castellanos. With two games left, Juventus once more missed a chance to strengthen their grip on fourth place after they were held 1-1 by seventh-placed Bologna last weekend. Juve are now level on 64 points with Lazio in fifth and a point above sixth-placed AS Roma, who can move above them into fourth when they visit third-placed Atalanta (68) on Monday. Juventus have won only two of their last six league games. Lazio, who are on a seven-game unbeaten league run, had their first attempt on target through Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in the third minute but his low effort at the near post was kept out by goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio. The first half was largely short on action after that but following the break Weston McKennie crossed from the left and French forward Kolo Muani put the visitors in front. However, Igor Tudor's side were down to 10 men shortly afterwards when Kalulu was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Castellanos. Lazio were on the front foot from then on and Juve's Manuel Locatelli had to clear Pedro's effort with about 15 minutes left before Di Gregorio saved Mario Gila's header after a corner. The hosts were then awarded a penalty just before the end after Juventus keeper brought Castellanos down chasing after the ball near the goal line on the right side of the box. However, the referee reversed his decision after a VAR check showed the Argentina forward was offside. Di Gregorio then made another great save to keep out a Castellanos header late in added time but had no chance when Vecino pounced on a rebound to score from close range. Juve were still without suspended striker Kenan Yildiz and only had nine players on the bench, with midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and defender Andrea Cambiaso also out injured.",

      • "content": "SOUTHAMPTON, England :Southampton gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer about with a surprise 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Saturday that saw the rock bottom team avoid tying Derby County as the worst Premier League side in history. Pep Guardiola's City remained third in the table on 65 points with two games remaining in their bid for Champions League qualification. Newcastle United and Chelsea, who meet on Sunday, are only two points behind. Nottingham Forest, who also have a game in hand, trail by four. Brentford's pursuit of a first-ever European qualification gained strength with their 1-0 victory over already-relegated Ipswich Town, while Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep them within touching distance of playing in Europe next season. Fulham's hopes of European football next season are fading fast, however, after they slipped to a fourth Premier League defeat in five games with a 3-1 loss to Everton. Already-relegated Southampton had looked likely to equal Derby County's season-low tally of 11 points in 2007-08, but the draw moved them to 12 as their fans at a sun-drenched St Mary's Stadium sung loudly in celebration. Manchester City thoroughly dominated with 26 shots to the home side's two, but Southampton defended in numbers, particularly in the dying minutes, to deny them. Their game plan drew criticism from City's Ruben Diaz. \"It's frustrating to play against a team like them. They don't even try to play, just wasting time the whole game,\" Diaz told Sky Sports. \"I don't even feel like they want to play the game or win the game. They are just sitting around. We tried every way. We had chances but we didn't score.\" Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was proud of his team. \"We've had a tough, tough season, we've had tough Monday mornings after heavy defeats,\" Ramsdale told Sky Sports. \"We spoke about trying to be respectful and giving our all for the football club. Today we put smiles on the Southampton fans' faces. It's just a relief to be honest.\" At Portman Road, Brentford won their fourth in a row on a first-half header by Kevin Schade to leave them eighth in the table with 55 points, while Ipswich are 18th. Schade scored in the 18th minute when he met Bryan Mbeumo's corner and steered the ball into the far corner. \"Incredible pride to be part of this group of players and staff. So difficult to win four games in a row,\" Brentford manager Thomas Frank told the BBC. LASER FOCUSED \"I see a strong team on form, we have got the momentum which is important. We are close to finishing eighth which would be the best position ever in the league. We are laser focused.\" At Wolverhampton, goals from Danny Welbeck and substitute Brajan Gruda saw Brighton move up one place to ninth, level on 55 points with eighth-placed Brentford. Wolves fell to 14th. Should Manchester City defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final this month, an eighth-place league finish would secure qualification for the Conference League. \"I think we were up against a good side and they're in good form. We had a gameplan and we played it out well,\" Welbeck told Premier League Productions. Brighton were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute for a foul by Matheus Cunha on Mats Wieffer, and Welbeck stepped up to put the ball in the net for his 10th league goal this season. Brighton doubled their lead in the 85th minute as German Gruda scored his first goal for the south-coast club, delicately dinking the ball over onrushing keeper Jose Sa after being played in by Simon Adingra. Fulham's loss at Craven Cottage saw them remain 11th in the table with 51 points from 36 games, four points back of the top eight, while Everton climbed one spot to 13th. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham a deserved lead in the first half with a powerful header before Vitaliy Mykolenko's deflected shot from the edge of the box levelled the score on the stroke of halftime. Two goals in three minutes from Michael Keane and Beto, who profited from an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, turned the game in Everton's favour in the second half and dealt their host's European dreams a heavy blow. \"It is the story of the last three or four games,\" Fulham manager Marco Silva told BBC. \"Goals have come from set-pieces. We have to be willing to fight, do our job well and we didn't. It's about concentration and focus.\" Bournemouth face Aston Villa in Saturday's late game.",

      • "content": "SEOUL: South Korea's former labor minister Kim Moon-soo was reinstated Saturday (May 10) as his conservative party's presidential candidate - the same day it revoked his nomination and attempted to replace him with a former prime minister . The People Power Party (PPP) has been in turmoil since its former president Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted after he declared martial law in December. Last week, Kim won the PPP's primary to run as its candidate in presidential elections on June 3. But before dawn Saturday, his nomination was cancelled, and the party said it was instead nominating career bureaucrat Han Duck-soo, 75, an ex-acting president who resigned last week to launch a presidential bid, initially as an independent. Han, also a former prime minister, and Kim had been in talks to merge their candidacies and unify the conservative base, to avoid an opposition landslide at the election, but those negotiations collapsed. Kim, 73, called the party's decision to cancel his candidacy a \"political coup\" and illegal. He then filed a court injunction to suspend the move which the Seoul Southern District Court held a roughly one-hour hearing to review. Late Saturday, the party announced that its members voted to reject the candidate switch, automatically reinstating Kim as the nominee. Kim's official registration is \"set to take place tomorrow\" with the National Election Commission, the party's interim leader Kwon Young-se said. Kwon said he will resign over his failure to unite conservatives behind a single candidate. Han, who officially joined the PPP on Saturday, said he humbly accepts the decision by \"the people and party members\". Kim thanked the party members and citizens, vowing to \"move forward to build a new and greater Republic of Korea\", adding \"everything will return to its rightful place\". SHATTERED INTERNAL DEMOCRACY The PPP's about-face came amid fears that not having a unified candidate could further weaken their chances in the election, as liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung widens his lead. But the last-minute shakeup proved controversial even within the PPP, with primary contenders criticising the leadership - one saying such a move would be unusual even in North Korea, and another calling on Han and ex-president Yoon to leave the party. Lee's Democratic Party had also gloated over the PPP's reversal, saying that after being responsible for Yoon's martial law, the party has now \"shattered internal democracy - leaving no justification for its continued existence\". Han has held a range of roles under both liberal and conservative administrations, including finance minister and ambassador to the United States. But as a former prime minister under Yoon, he has faced criticism for failing to prevent, and alleged complicity with, Yoon's martial law declaration. Kim shot to public attention as the only cabinet member who refused to bow in apology for failing to prevent Yoon's attempted suspension of civilian rule and for opposing his impeachment. Kim, also a former three-term lawmaker, spent around two decades as a labour and pro-democracy activist fighting military authoritarian regimes - including serving a jail term - but later said he shifted his views following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A National Barometer Survey released this week showed Lee - who currently faces multiple criminal trials - leading Kim 43 per cent to 29 per cent. In a separate match-up scenario, Lee held a 44 per cent to 34 per cent advantage over Han.",

      • "description": "From Paris to New York, AWDPI's mission to empower Asian women earns global recognition and catalyzes new action at CSW69. NEW YORK, May 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In March 2025, the global non-profit organization Asian Women Development Plan International (AWDPI) received two prestigious honors during the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at UN Headquarters in New York. AWDPI was awarded the Global Outstanding Women's Public Welfare Organization Award, while its Board Member, Ms. Stephanie Sun, received the Asian Outstanding Female Leadership Award. These accolades reflect the international community's recognition of AWDPI's leadership in promoting gender equality and the rising global influence of Asian women in public service. Five Years of Global Impact: Empowering Asian Women Worldwide Founded in 2020 by Ms. Yimar Yu, AWDPI evolved from its original founding program Avoice (Against Violence to Overseas Chinese Women Program). The organization works to eliminate gender-based violence and discrimination and to uplift Asian women through economic opportunity, political engagement, and cultural empowerment. Over the past five years, AWDPI has established a global footprint with offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, and Australia. Partnering with the United Nations, governments, academia, and private sector stakeholders, it has directly supported thousands of Asian women in more than 30 countries. Programs such as the Anti-Domestic Violence Support System and the Conference of Asian Women Development International are widely regarded as global models for innovation and cross-cultural impact in gender advocacy. A Powerful Voice at the United Nations AWDPI has participated in high-level dialogues and official parallel forums hosted by the United Nations, amplifying the call for equitable opportunities for Asian women. Its representatives have shared critical insights, proposed actionable policies, and strengthened interregional cooperation for sustainable development. Advocating in Paris: Championing China's Gender Equality Policy On March 5, AWDPI Board Member Ms. Yanping Wang, a delegate to the landmark 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, took the stage at the Femina Vox International Forum held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Speaking at the opening high-level roundtable, she reflected on the enduring global significance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—30 years on. In a compelling dialogue moderated by UNESCO Artist for Peace Dr. Guila Clara Kessous, Ms. Wang reaffirmed China's deep-rooted commitment to gender equality and inclusive development. She highlighted how the principles first enshrined in the Beijing Declaration continue to guide international cooperation on women's rights. \"Empowering women is synonymous with empowering all of humanity,\" she emphasized, calling on governments, private sector leaders, and civil society to re-energize their commitment to gender justice in the face of growing global challenges. Her remarks brought a powerful historical and policy perspective to the forum and were met with broad international resonance. Breaking Barriers: Stephanie Sun's Personal Journey of Leadership On March 17, during CSW69 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, AWDPI Board Member Stephanie Sun was invited to share her inspiring journey with her personal \"firsts\": including being the first one going to college and the first immigrant in her family, she became the first female immigrant in history to be appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania as Executive Director of the Governor's Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. She also made history by spearheading the historic progress of the Pennsylvania election system moving from bilingual to trilingual, adding the first Asian language, Chinese, secured by the federal Voting Rights Act, and by becoming the first Asian to serve as Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, part of the largest civil rights organizations in the U.S. Despite systemic challenges historically faced by Asian communities, Ms. Sun's story is a powerful example of individual resilience driving systemic change. She encouraged Asian women to become agents of transformation and to create 'countless firsts' in public life. Her speech was met with great enthusiasm and was interrupted several times by resounding applause. For her outstanding contributions to public policy and civic engagement, she received the Asian Outstanding Female Leadership Award. Other honorees at the event included Nobel laureate Ms. Youyou Tu, and former Secretary Ms. Elaine Chao. Shaping the Global Gender Agenda: AWDPI at the New York Action Initiative On March 19, AWDPI played a key role in CSW69's parallel forum on Women's Economic Empowerment. Ms. Yuting Deng, AWDPI's U.S. Representative, presented findings from global projects and urged policymakers to take meaningful steps to address the needs of overseas Asian women. Building on this engagement, AWDPI joined international delegates in signing the New York Action Initiative, symbolizing cross-border solidarity and shared commitment to women's empowerment. Throughout CSW69, Ms. Tiantian Wu, Director of AWDPI's U.S. National Office, led AWDPI's strategic policy engagement and multilateral dialogue to amplify the voices of Asian women in global gender discussions. \"Every registration table is a site of advocacy, and every coffee break holds the potential for change,\" she noted. Through sustained and intentional presence, AWDPI ensured that the priorities of Asian women were meaningfully integrated into international gender equality agendas. A Call to Action: Lighting the Path Ahead At the award ceremony of CSW69's parallel forum, held at the United Nations Headquarters, AWDPI founder Ms. Yimar Yu reaffirmed the organization's commitment to empowering Asian women, advancing their participation and leadership in global progress. She extended her sincere appreciation to UN Gender Equality Advocate Ms. Hawa Taylor-Kamara Diallo, who also served as the award presenter, for her decades-long leadership in fostering cross-cultural understanding and advancing global gender equality. From Paris to New York, AWDPI has been a consistent contributor to global gender equality efforts and human rights through sustained multilateral engagement. As a signatory to the New York Action Initiative, AWDPI continues to champion inclusive development through gender-responsive advocacy and international cooperation. \"Where fragments of light converge, they will ultimately illuminate the future of human civilization.\" —AWDPI AWDPI calls upon partners, media, and allies worldwide to join in advancing a more just, inclusive, and gender-equal world.",

      • "content": "ISLAMABAD: Nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday (May 10) after US pressure and diplomacy, announcing a sudden stop to a conflict that had seemed to be spiralling alarmingly. But within hours, violations were reported from the main cities of Indian Kashmir, the territory that had borne the brunt of four days of fighting. Blasts were heard in Srinagar and Jammu . Projectiles and flashes were seen in the night sky over Jammu, similar to the events of the previous evening, according to authorities, residents and Reuters witnesses. Military spokespeople in both countries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The fighting had been the worst between the old South Asian enemies in nearly three decades and threatened to erupt into a full-scale war in one of the world's most volatile and densely populated regions. There were brief fears that nuclear arsenals might come into play as Pakistan's military said a top body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet. But the defence minister said no such meeting was scheduled, hours after a night of heavy fighting in which the two countries targeted each other’s military bases and the combined civilian death toll rose to 66. \"Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect,\" Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar posted on X. \"Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!\" The Indian foreign secretary said the two countries' military chiefs had spoken to each other and agreed that all fighting would stop at 5pm Indian time (1130 GMT), without using the word \"ceasefire\". US President Donald Trump posted: \"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.\" HOTLINES AND DIPLOMACY Dar told the broadcaster Geo News that military channels and hotlines between India and Pakistan had been activated, and three dozen countries had helped to facilitate the agreement. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, India's top diplomat, said the two military chiefs would speak to each other again on May 12. On Wednesday, India had attacked what it said was \"terrorist infrastructure\" in Pakistani Kashmir and Pakistan, two weeks after 26 people were killed in an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir. Pakistan denied India's accusations that it was involved in the attack. Days of cross-border fire, shelling and drone and missile attacks followed. Despite the truce, two Indian government sources told Reuters that the punitive measures announced by India and reciprocated by Pakistan, such as trade suspension and visa cancellations, would remain in place for now. The sources also said the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing pact that India suspended after the Kashmir attack, would remain in abeyance. The Indian foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir, and the two national security advisors over the course of 48 hours. TALKS TO FOLLOW AT NEUTRAL VENUE In a post on X, Rubio commended Modi and Sharif on the agreement, which he said included not only an immediate ceasefire but also the start of talks on \"a broad set of issues at a neutral site”. Jaishankar said India had consistently maintained a firm and \"uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations\" and would continue to do so. News of the ceasefire was greeted with relief on both sides of the border, and Pakistan's airports authority said its airspace had been fully reopened. Omar Abdullah, chief minister of Indian Kashmir, which bore the brunt of the fighting, welcomed the truce but added: \"If it had happened 2-3 days ago, the lives we lost would not have been lost.\" Pakistani news channels showed tanks returning from the border. \"Both Pakistan and India need to lift their large populations on virtually every measure of socio-economic development,\" said Ehsan Malik, CEO of the Pakistan Business Council. \"We are happy that a ceasefire will help both the governments to focus on this priority.\" Shuja Nawaz, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council's South Asia Center, said the Indus treaty would figure prominently in the impending talks \"after a decent interval, which allows both governments to claim credit for what they've achieved until now\". India and Pakistan have been locked in a dispute over Kashmir ever since they were born at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan both rule part of Kashmir but claim it in full. They have gone to war three times, including twice over Kashmir, alongside numerous smaller outbreaks of fighting. India blames Pakistan for an insurgency in its part of Kashmir that began in 1989 and has killed tens of thousands. It also blames Pakistani Islamist militant groups for attacks elsewhere in India. Pakistan rejects both charges. It says it only provides moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri separatists.",

      • "content": "ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: Nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday (May 10) after US pressure and four days of fighting, but within hours explosions rang out in border cities and towns and India accused Pakistan of violating the pact. Artillery fire and attack drones were witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir, the centre of much of the fighting, while blasts from air-defence systems boomed in cities under blackout, similar to the previous evening, according to authorities, residents and Reuters witnesses. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters that Pakistan had violated the understanding arrived at by the two countries earlier in the day, and that the Indian armed forces had been instructed to \"deal strongly\" with any repetition. \"We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility,\" Misri told a media briefing. In response, the foreign ministry of Pakistan said the country was committed to the ceasefire and blamed India for the violations. \"Notwithstanding the violations being committed by India in some areas, our forces are handling the situation with responsibility and restraint,\" it said. The ministry also called on troops on the ground to exercise restraint and said that any issues in the implementation of the ceasefire should be addressed through communication at appropriate levels. Pakistan's military spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The fighting has been the worst between the old South Asian enemies in nearly three decades and threatened to erupt into a full-scale war in one of the world's most volatile and densely populated regions. \"Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!\" Misri had earlier said the chiefs of the two countries' military operations had spoken to each other and agreed that all fighting would stop at 5pm local time (1130 GMT). US President Donald Trump posted: \"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.\" In a subsequent address to the nation, Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif said Trump \"played a sincere\" role in promoting the ceasefire. HOTLINES AND DIPLOMACY Dar told the broadcaster Geo News that military channels and hotlines between India and Pakistan had been activated, and three dozen countries had helped to facilitate the agreement. The sources also said the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing pact that India suspended after the Kashmir attack, would remain suspended. The Indian foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Sharif, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir, and the two national security advisers over the course of 48 hours. TALKS TO FOLLOW AT NEUTRAL VENUE In a post on X, Rubio commended Modi and Sharif on the agreement, which he said included not only an immediate ceasefire but also the start of talks on \"a broad set of issues at a neutral site\". News of the ceasefire was greeted with relief on both sides of the border and Pakistan's airport authority said its airspace had been fully reopened. But the subsequent violations sparked alarm in India. \"What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!!\", Omar Abdullah, chief minister of Indian Kashmir, posted on X. \"This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up.\" India and Pakistan have been locked in a dispute over Kashmir ever since they were born at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. It says it provides only moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri separatists.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Tampines industrial building that was engulfed in flames has suffered fire damage and will be closed off as a precautionary measure, said the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) late on Saturday (May 10) in response to CNA's queries. While a BCA spokesperson said the building, which caught fire on Friday, \"remains structurally safe\", an inspection indicated damage to parts of the reinforced concrete structures and the steel roof of the two-storey building located at 18 Tampines Street 92. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) completed its damping down operations - applying water to burnt surfaces to halt any rekindling of fire - on Saturday morning. This enabled BCA engineers to gain entry and conduct a detailed site inspection. SCDF had also said in earlier Facebook updates that the building had three floors. The BCA spokesperson noted that the roof trusses showed signs of deformation from prolonged heat exposure, and that there was spalling observed on several columns and slabs. \"Despite these signs of fire damage, there was no significant structural deformation to the reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns, hence the building remains structurally safe.\" The building's guardhouse, carpark shelter and neighbouring unit were not affected by the fire, added the spokesperson. BCA said it will issue an order to the building's owner to close off the whole building, excluding the guardhouse and carpark shelter, as a \"precautionary measure\". \"The building owner has also been instructed to appoint a professional engineer to carry out a detailed investigation into the structural condition, recommend immediate safety measures to mitigate risks, and propose permanent rectification works,\" added the spokesperson. DARK PLUMES OF SMOKE AND ASH The fire had sent dark plumes of smoke and ash into the sky, and sparked evacuations from nearby workplaces and a school on Friday. SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at 12.50pm that day and that the fire involved textile items. It deployed five water jets, an aerial monitor from a combined platform ladder and two unmanned firefighting machines. \"A person from the affected premises was assessed by an SCDF paramedic for a minor cut on his arm. The person declined to be sent to the hospital,\" it said in a Facebook update on Friday. A photo on SCDF's Facebook page showed smoke billowing out of the windows of TC Homeplus, a company which distributes homeware and homelinen. Other videos and photos show thick black smoke rising from the location, which is near SAFRA Tampines and not far from Tampines Mall.",
