      • "description": "A new people-smuggling route opens up crossing a lake into Kenya, but it is proving deadly for some Eritreans.",
      • "content": "As the sun set over Lake Turkana, a mother sobbed and threw flowers into the greenish-blue water to remember her teenage daughter who had drowned trying to reach Kenya via a new route being used by people smugglers. Senait Mebrehtu, a Pentecostal Christian Eritrean who had sought asylum in Kenya three years ago, made the pilgrimage to north-western Kenya to see for herself where 14-year-old Hiyab had lost her life last year. The girl had been travelling with her sister, who survived the late-night crossing over the vast lake, where winds can be powerful. \"If the smugglers told me there was such a big and dangerous lake in Kenya, I wouldn't have let my daughters come this far,\" Ms Senait told the BBC as she sat on the western shoreline. Ms Senait had arrived by plane in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, on a tourist visa with her two younger children, fleeing religious persecution. But she was not to allowed to travel with her two other daughters at the time as they were older and nearer the age of conscription. Eritrea is a highly militarised, one-party country - and often national service can go on for years and can include forced labour. The teenagers begged to join her in Kenya, so she consulted relatives who told her they would pay smugglers to get the girls out of Eritrea. The fate of the two girls was put into the hands of traffickers who took them on a weeks-long trip by road and foot from Eritrea into neighbouring northern Ethiopia - then to the south into Kenya to the north-eastern shores of Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake. A female smuggler in Kenya confirmed to the BBC that Lake Turkana was increasingly being used as an illegal crossing for the migrants. \"We call it the digital route because it is very new,\" she said. The trafficker, who earns around $1,500 (£1,130) for each migrant she traffics into or through Kenya (four times the average monthly salary of a Kenyan worker), spoke to us about her work at a secret location and on condition of anonymity. For the last 15 years she has been part of a huge smuggling network that operates across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa - mainly moving those fleeing from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. With Kenya having stepped up patrols on its roads, smugglers are now turning to Lake Turkana to get migrants into the country. \"Agents\" on the new route, she said, received the migrants in the Kenyan fishing village of Lomekwi where road transport was organised to take them to Nairobi - a journey of about 15 hours. Warning of the dangers of travelling on the rickety wooden boats, she appealed to parents not to allow their children to make the crossing alone. \"I won't say I love the money I make - because as a mother I can't be happy when I see bad things happening to other women's children,\" she told the BBC. \"I'd like to advise migrants if they'll listen to me. I'd like to beg them to stay in their countries,\" she said, further cautioning of the callous attitudes of many traffickers. Osman, an Eritrean migrant who did not want to give his real name for security reasons, made the crossing at the same time as Hiyab and her sister. He recalled how Hiyab's boat capsized in front of his eyes not long after leaving the fishing village of Ileret as it was heading south-west to Lomekwi. \"Hiyab was in the boat in front of us - its motor wasn't working and it was being propelled by a strong wind,\" he said. \"They were about 300m [984ft] into the water when their boat overturned, resulting in the deaths of seven people.\" Hiyab's sister survived by clinging to the sinking boat until another vessel - also operated by the smugglers - came to the rescue. Ms Senait blamed the smugglers for the deaths, saying they overloaded the boat with more than 20 migrants. \"The cause of deaths was plain negligence. They put too many people in a small boat that couldn't even carry five people,\" she said. During the BBC's visit to Lomewki, two fishermen said they saw the bodies of migrants - believed to be Eritreans - floating in the lake, which is around 300km (186 miles) long and 50km wide, in July 2024. \"There were about four bodies on the shores. Then, a few days later other bodies appeared,\" Brighton Lokaala said. Another fisherman, Joseph Lomuria, said he saw the bodies of two men and two women - one of whom appeared to be a teenager. In June 2024, the UN's refugee agency, UNHCR, recorded 345,000 Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers in East Africa, out of 580,000 globally. Like Ms Senait's family, many flee to avoid military conscription in a country that has been embroiled in numerous wars in the region, and where free political and religious activity is not tolerated as the government tries to keep a tight grip on power. Uganda-based Eritrean lawyer, Mula Berhan, told the BBC that Kenya and Uganda were increasingly becoming the preferred destination of these migrants because of conflict in Ethiopia and Sudan, which both neighbour Eritrea. The female smuggler said in her experience some of the migrants did settle in Kenya, but others used as the country as a transit point to reach Uganda, Rwanda and South Africa, believing it easier to get refugee status there. The smuggling network operates in all these countries, handing over migrants to different \"agents\" until they reach their final destination, which - in some cases - can also be Europe or North America. Her job is to hand over those migrants who are in transit in Nairobi to agents who keep them in \"holding houses\" until the next leg of their trip is arranged and paid for. By this stage each migrant has probably paid around $5,000 for the journey up to that point. The BBC saw a room in a block of flats that was being used as a holding house. Five Eritrean men were locked inside the room, which had one mattress. In the holding houses, migrants are expected to pay rent and also pay for their food - and the smuggler said she knew of three men and a young woman who had died of hunger as they had run out of cash. She said the agents simply disposed of the bodies and called their deaths bad luck. \"Smugglers keep lying to the families saying their people are alive, and they keep on sending money,\" she acknowledged. Women migrants, she said, were often sexually abused or forced to get married to male smugglers. She said she herself had no intention of giving up the lucrative trade but felt others should be aware of what could be ahead of them. It is little comfort for Ms Senait, who still mourns the death of her 14-year-old while expressing relief that her elder daughter survived and was unharmed by the smugglers. \"We have gone through what every Eritrean family is going through,\" she said. \"May God heal our land and deliver us from all this.\" Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "With 237,000 jobs created and nearly 100,000 youth beneficiaries across 18 countries, the ENABLE Youth Programme is a clear testament to how Africa’s human capital can be unleashed to transform African agriculture. This flagship initiative of the African Development Bank exemplifies the 2025 Annual Meetings theme, “Making Africa’s Capital Work Better for Africa’s Development,” by converting the continent’s demographic dividend into economic opportunities. Designed to create 300,000 agribusinesses and empower young entrepreneurs with both skills and financing, the Empowering Novel Agri-Business-Led Employment (ENABLE) Youth Programme, launched in 2016, demonstrates how strategic investment in youth-led enterprises can accelerate agricultural transformation across the continent. While smallholder farming contributes 80 percent of the continent’s food production, and women constitute a large majority of the labour force, many of the farmers struggle to achieve optimal productivity and sustainability. Often, this is a result of inadequate capital. It is therefore necessary to foster access to finance for women in agriculture in Africa. This is not only critical to achieve food security but also to increase the impact of women in the agriculture value chains. Two agripreneurs testify to how financing for their agribusinesses is benefitting local communities.Faith Timona Mumo is the co-founder and CEO of Iviani Farm Limited, based in Kenya. Her company purchases fresh produce from local farmers, including mangoes, bananas, pineapples and leafy vegetables, and processes them into dried crisps—extending their shelf life from just a few days to more than 24 months.Explaining the idea behind her business, Mumo said: “Fruits and vegetables are highly perishable, and their quality deteriorates rapidly after harvest. They are also susceptible to pest infestation and decay due to poor postharvest practices.”Up to 80 percent of fresh produce is lost every year during harvest, transport, and marketing, Mumo explains. “In addition, postharvest loss forces farmers to sell their produce to brokers, middlemen and other buyers at the lowest prices available.”As the beneficiary of an interest-free ENABLE Youth loan, Mumo has provided technical support to farmers on best practices in post-harvest loss reduction.Iviani Farm also practises aquaculture in arid and semi-arid regions, supporting farmers to start their own fish farms. Interested farmers can take a farm tour to witness the farm hatchery and fishponds, design, even providing quality fish seeds (fingerlings) to farmers. In 2022, Mumo received an interest-free loan from the African Development Bank’s ENABLE Youth Programme, which empowered her to provide technical support and assistance to farmers on best practices in aquaculture and postharvest loss reduction.“I used the funds to construct additional ponds, purchase a grow-out greenhouse, install a solar system to meet all the energy requirements of the hatchery operation, and implement a modern water aquaculture system for water conservation. These investments allowed my team to double our fingerling production capacity, enabling us to meet the growing demand for quality fingerlings, both locally and across the country,” Mumo said.“With the right investment, agri-SMEs can transform food systems, enhance small-scale farmers’ resilience to shocks, pivot their business models in response to crises, innovate and generate economic opportunities in rural and urban areas,” ENABLE Youth Programme Coordinator, Edson Mpyisi said. For Mumo, agriculture can be a gateway to financial freedom for women stimulated by human capital development and capacity building on best agriculture practices.“I would encourage African women to explore opportunities in agriculture, particularly in sectors like aquaculture, which offers significant potential for growth and income generation,” she adds. So far, the company supports close to 5,000 smallholder farmers in Kenya.Just like Mumo, Washington Maina, also received an interest-free loan from the ENABLE Youth Programme. As the founder of Centro Energy Limited, a company specialising in aquaculture, energy, and environment, Maina used the funds to rehabilitate his fish hatchery.“We are now an authenticated fish hatchery, able to meet demand in the region, thanks to the loan,” Maina said. “Our company has the capacity to produce 120,000 tilapia and 60,000 African catfish fingerlings monthly.”Washington Maina, ENABLE Youth beneficiary and founder of Centro Energy Limited, raises fish fingerlings to help meet the increasing demand in Kenya. The Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy (2024-2033) has identified youth as a cross-cutting priority, which Mpyisi said will result in increased investments by the Bank in youth empowerment in the coming years.Source African Development Bank GroupThe post African youth transform agriculture with capital that works appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "Large numbers of Sudanese refugees are pouring into eastern Chad with more than 18,500 people arriving in the past two weeks alone, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said. After the bombing of the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people in Darfur and the city of al-Fasher, it says hundreds of thousands of people are on the move. Many of them, including children, elderly people, and pregnant women, are severely malnourished.“We didn’t expect this big influx of people,” says Jean-Paul Habamungu, head of the UNHCR sub-office in Chad.“It’s terrible here at the border, many children, unaccompanied children like the one of 14 years we just met, this boy of 9 years who is crying here looking for their parents.”Habamungu says there are also many people with specific needs including pregnant and lactating women who are malnourished.“So we expect more malnourished people coming now, talking about people who are dying on their way from Zamzam to between Tawila and Tiné, dying with hunger.”The UNHCR says some 76% of them have lived through traumatic experiences such as sexual violence, extortion, and theft. In addition, it says Chad is struggling to take in the new arrivals. It already hosts some 1.3 million refugees, including 794,000 who have fled Sudan since the civil war started there over two years ago.Humanitarian resources across the country are severely limited, impacting the ability to provide water, shelter, health, education, and protection.Last month, Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces stormed into the Zamzam camp and went on a three-day rampage, killing at least 400 people, after months of starving its population with a siege. Refugees and aid workers say RSF fighters gunned down men and women in the streets, beat and tortured others, and raped and sexually assaulted women and girls. The 11 April attack was the worst ever suffered by Zamzam, Sudan’s largest displacement camp, in its 20 years of existence.Once home to some 500,000 residents, the camp has been virtually emptied. The RSF also destroyed Zamzam’s only functioning medical centre, killing nine workers from Relief International.Much of the south and east of the camp was burned to the ground, the General Coordination said.Source: AfricanewsThe post New wave of Sudanese refugees flee into neighbouring Chad appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "An unnamed Iranian official has been quoted by state media as saying the fourth round of nuclear negotiations with the United States could take place over the weekend in the capital of Oman. While the timing has not yet been finalised, the source said discussions will take place in Muscat over two days.Speaking on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said Tehran’s principles and framework for participating in nuclear negotiations remain unchanged. He said it remains committed to continuing “the path of dialogue and diplomacy” in talks with Washington.US President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if no agreement is reached with his administration to resolve the long-standing dispute.“The threat posed by the [bellicose forces in the US] against Iran will undoubtedly prompt the Iranian armed forces to spare no effort and stay on high alert against any aggression or adventurism,” said Baghaei.During his previous term in office, Trump pulled the United States out of a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, leaving the agreement in tatters.Western countries say Iran’s nuclear programme is geared towards producing weapons, whereas Tehran insists it is purely for civilian purposes. The delegations of Iran and the United States have so far held three rounds of indirect negotiations with mediation from Oman. The fourth round, which was scheduled for 3 May in Rome, was postponed to an unspecified date owing to what Oman described as “logistical reasons”.Source: AfricanewsThe post Next round of US-Iran nuclear likely to take place in Oman this weekend appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "As the September 16 General Election draws near, the Malawi Police Service has embarked on a series of public order management trainings to equip its officers with skills in managing violence.Opening the training at Mlangeni Police Training College in Ntcheu on Monday, Police Inspector General (IG) Merlyne Yolamu advised officers to take the training seriously and master tactics of managing gatherings, especially during the campaign period when peaceful gatherings can easily escalate into violence.Called to act: Yolamu“We consider this a critical moment because tempers can easily rise leading to violence. Always make prudent decisions and take the right action which can calm the situation without aggravating the situation,” she said. The Police IG discouraged the officers from firing teargas or opening fire unless the situation got out of control.“After this training, we expect that you all will be able to make meaningful decisions right at the scene. You don’t always have to refer issues to seniors when you are on the ground. You should know better how to resolve a situation,” said Yolamu. The training is sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), a major stakeholder in the electoral process which offers support in civic education, among others. In her remarks, UNDP Resident Representative Fenella Frost said the training is critical for the police who are expected to ensure peace and order before, during and after the elections.“We have hope in the police and this training adds on the skills and knowledge on how this task can be performed so that the elections go on smoothly and people’s rights are respected,” she said.On her part, Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja said so far, there has been good coordination between the commission and the police which she said is a step towards peaceful elections. The post Police train officers in public order management appeared first on Nation Online.",

      • "content": "Among the roughly 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, many are keenly anticipating the upcoming Vatican conclave at which members of the College of Cardinals will elect a successor to Pope Francis. There are no official candidates for the papacy, but some cardinals are considered “papabile,” or possessing the characteristics necessary to become pope. After St. John Paul II broke the Italian hold on the papacy in 1978, the field of contenders has broadened considerably, such that even cardinals from far-flung countries are now possible successors to Pope Francis. Cardinals will begin voting when the conclave begins May 7.Ordinary people, tourists, and the faithful wandering around St. Peter’s Square expressed their preferences and hope that their favourite candidate would become pope. However, there are also those who believe that none of the cardinal electors has the necessary characteristics to become pope.“There isn’t anyone at the moment who shows such strong charisma as Pope Francis or John Paul II. We’ll see,” said Rome resident Pierfrancesco.Source: AfricanewsThe post On the eve of the conclave, tourists and locals in Rome wait in suspense appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "description": "The army has repeatedly accused the Gulf nation of backing the RSF, something which the UAE denies.",
      • "content": "Sudan has cut diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after repeatedly accusing the Gulf nation of backing the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the country's civil war. The announcement comes after the RSF were blamed for three days of attacks on the usually safe city of Port Sudan. On Tuesday, Sudan's Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim accused the UAE of violating his country's sovereignty through its \"proxy\", the RSF. The UAE has repeatedly denied allegations that it is giving financial, military and political support to the paramilitary force. Two years of conflict has killed thousands of people, forced millions from their homes and created the world's worst humanitarian crisis. As a result of the defence minister's announcement, the Sudanese ambassador will be withdrawn from the UAE and Sudan will shut its diplomatic missions in the Gulf nation. Over the past three days, drone strikes have hit an international airport, a major power station and a hotel in Port Sudan. The army has accused the RSF of being behind the assault, but the paramilitary group is yet to comment on the matter. Until now, Port Sudan had avoided bombardment and was regarded as one of the safest places in the war-ravaged nation. During the civil war Sudan's army has accused the UAE of arming the RSF. Both the UK and the US have singled out the UAE in separate appeals for outside countries to stop backing Sudan's warring parties. However, on Monday, the UN's top court dismissed Sudan's case against the UAE, in which it accused the Gulf state of complicity in genocide . The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that the case could not proceed because the UAE had opted out Article 9 of the Genocide Convention, which means that it cannot be sued by other states over genocide allegations. Reem Ketait, the UAE's deputy assistant minister for political affairs, said the court's decision was \"clear and decisive\". \"The international community must focus urgently on ending this devastating war and supporting the Sudanese people, and it must demand humanitarian aid reaches all those in need,\" she said. Both the army and RSF have been accused of war crimes. Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "Paying immigrants to leave the United States. This is just the latest step in Donald Trump’s mass deportations plan. The Trump administration announced on Monday that it will offer $1,000 to migrants who are in the US illegally, if they decide to leave the country. The American government will also pay for migrants’ travel assistance back to their home countries. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said this so-called self-deportation “is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.” Migrants will be paid after their return to their home country has been confirmed through an app called CBP Home. People who use this app will also be “deprioritized for detention and removal.”The Department of Homeland Security said a first person had already taken up the offer, receiving a ticket for a flight from Chicago to Honduras. Trump made immigration enforcement and mass deportation a centrepiece of his campaign and of his first 100 days in office, but the execution remains costly. The DHS said that it costs over $17,000 to arrest, detain and remove someone who is in the US illegally. The new self-deportation scheme has already received criticism over its effectiveness and legitimacy. “This ain’t policy — it’s a payoff”, Texas Democratic congresswoman Jasmine Crockett wrote on X.US President Donald Trump repeatedly said during his campaign that he planned to carry out “the largest deportation operation” in American history. His administration has so far not deported as many people as he promised. • "content": "A global report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that the underlying causes of ill health often stem from factors beyond the health sector, such as lack of quality housing, education and job opportunities. The new World report on social determinants of health equity shows that such determinants can be responsible for a dramatic reduction of healthy life expectancy – sometimes by decades – in high- and low-income countries alike. For example, people in the country with the lowest life expectancy will, on average, live 33 years shorter than those born in the country with the highest life expectancy. The social determinants of health equity can influence people’s health outcomes more than genetic influences or access to health care.“Our world is an unequal one. Where we are born, grow, live, work and age significantly influences our health and well-being,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “But change for the better is possible. This world report illustrates the importance of addressing the interlinked social determinants and provides evidence-based strategies and policy recommendations to help countries improve health outcomes for all.”The report underscores that inequities in health are closely linked to degrees of social disadvantage and levels of discrimination. Health follows a social gradient whereby the more deprived the area in which people live, the lower their incomes are and they have fewer years of education, poorer health, with less number of healthy years to live. These inequities are exacerbated in populations that face discrimination and marginalization. One of the vivid examples is the fact that Indigenous Peoples have lower life expectancy than non-Indigenous Peoples in high- or low-income countries alike.Social injustice driving inequitiesThe World report on social determinants of health equity is the first of its kind published since 2008 when the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health released its final report laying out targets for 2040 for reducing gaps between and within countries in life expectancy, childhood and maternal mortality. The 2025 world report, shows that these targets are likely to be missed.Although data is scarce, there is sufficient evidence to show that health inequities within countries are often widening. WHO data cites that children born in poorer countries are 13 times more likely to die before the age of 5 than in wealthier countries. Modelling shows that the lives of 1.8 million children annually could be saved by closing the gap and enhancing equity between the poorest and wealthiest sectors of the population within low- and-middle-income countries. The report shows that while there was a 40% decline in maternal mortality globally between 2000 and 2023, low- and lower-middle-income countries still account for 94% of maternal deaths.Women from disadvantaged groups are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. In many high-income countries, racial and ethnic inequities in maternal death rates persist, for example, in some areas Indigenous women were up to three times more likely to die during childbirth. There are also strong associations between higher levels of gender inequality, including child marriage, and higher maternal mortality rates.Breaking the cycleWHO emphasizes that measures to address income inequality, structural discrimination, conflict and climate disruptions are key to overcoming deep-seated health inequities. Climate change, for example, is estimated to push an additional 68–135 million people into extreme poverty over the next 5 years.Currently, 3.8 billion people worldwide are deprived of adequate social protection coverage, such as child/paid sick leave benefits, with direct and lasting impact on their health outcomes. High debt burdens have been crippling the capacity of governments to invest in these services, with the total value of interest payments made by the world’s 75 poorest countries increasing fourfold over the past decade. WHO calls for collective action from national and local governments and leaders within health, academia, research, civil society, alongside the private sector to:address economic inequality and invest in social infrastructure and universal public services;overcome structural discrimination and the determinants and impacts of conflicts, emergencies and forced migration;manage the challenges and opportunities of climate action and the digital transformation to promote health equity co-benefits; andpromote governance arrangements that prioritize action on the social determinants of health equity, including maintaining cross-government policy platforms and strategies, allocating money, power and resources to the most local level where it can have greatest impact, and empowering community engagement and civil society.Editor’s note In resolution WHA74.16 (2021), the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly requested the WHO Director-General to prepare an updated report on the social determinants of health, their impact on health and health equity, progress made so far in addressing them, and recommendations for further action. The World report on social determinants of health equity provides an update to the conclusion of the WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health in 2008 which stated that “social injustice kills on a grand scale”.Sourced from WHOThe post Health inequities are shortening lives by decades appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "Drone strikes have hit a major power station in Port Sudan on Tuesday, causing “a complete power outage” in the eastern Sudanese city, the country’s electricity provider told the BBC. The barrage occurred as the paramilitary RSF continue to heighten attacks on Port Sudan, after launching their first strikes on the city this weekend. The RSF unleashed drones on other key targets early Tuesday. One drone hit the civilian part of the city’s international airport, causing flights to be cancelled. Another drone hit an army base in the city centre and a third one struck a fuel depot near the port.Witnesses say a hotel located close to the residence of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was also hit in the attack. There were no reported casualties.Sudan Information Minister Khalid Aleiser visited the southern part of the port, where fuel tanks were reportedly hit. He slammed the United Arab Emirates, saying it was arming the RSF. The UAE rejected the accusation and condemned the attacks. The RSF is targeting Port Sudan for the third day in a row. The city had previously been spared in Sudan’s two-year war. On Sunday, strikes hit the military part of the airport, followed by the targeting of fuel depots on Monday. In both cases, military sources blamed the RSF. The paramilitary has not commented on the attacks. The United Nations has temporarily suspended all aid flights in and out of Port Sudan but maintains regular aid operations. “None of our offices, premises or warehouses have been impacted, and we continue to carry out our regular operations”, said Farhan Haq, the UN deputy spokesperson. The city was once seen as a safe haven for displaced people. It had become the de facto seat of the army-aligned government since the RSF first invaded Khartoum two years ago. The city also welcomed hundreds of thousands of displaced people. The recent attacks are likely to worsen the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Two years into the war, the army has succeeded in pushing the RSF out of most of central Sudan, and the paramilitary has shifted tactics from ground incursions to drone attacks.

      • "content": "LAGOS, Nigeria, 6 May 2025-/African Media Agency(AMA)/- A leading Nigerian FMCG company has chosen SAP SuccessFactors to transform its human capital management capabilities across its West African operations.Kofi Abunu, Managing Director at Food Concepts Plc (FC), says: “Our company was founded with the vision of becoming the most loved quick-service restaurant and baked goods brand in Nigeria. We know that ultimately it is our people that enable us to realise this vision. To ensure we continue to attract and retain the best local talent, we embarked on a strategic technology project that would support our overall human capital management and employee experience efforts.”Food Concepts Plc is a leading multi-brand quick-service restaurant group. The company operates three of Nigeria’s most popular brands, including Chicken Republic, PieXpress, and The Chop Box. Food Concepts was founded in 2000 and employs 6 000 people across West Africa. With a mandate from the Board, Claudette Russel, Human Resource Director at Food Concepts, and her team determined that the company needed a strategic partner to support its HR transformation. “We sought a partner that would support the management of our ‘Hire to Retire’ process and optimise our core enterprise capabilities. In addition, we wanted to address challenges related to payroll processing and accuracy as part of a broader five-year growth plan.”The company chose SAP SuccessFactors as its human capital management solution of choice. Following a competitive selection process that involved five separate solutions providers, the Food Concepts executive team appointed experienced SAP regional Gold partner WYZE to support the implementation, covering all core HR business processes.Olu Familusi, Technology Partner at WYZE, says: “We implemented several core SAP SuccessFactors modules, including Employee Central, Performance & Goals, and Recruiting. Additionally, our bespoke payroll solution – WYZE Payroll – was deployed to support the employee lifecycle journey.”Following the deployment of the modules, WYZE also retains responsibility for ongoing end-user support across all the user groups within Food Concepts.“WYZE is an experienced SAP partner based in Nigeria and understands the local work culture and nuances required to manage such a complex rollout,” says Kofi. “As our technology partner, WYZE brought best practices that helped fast-track aspects of our deployment, leading to an accelerated go-live. In addition, WYZE ensured change management and risk management principles were filmy embedded throughout the implementation, leading to rapid adoption internally and avoiding any undue delays.”Claudette further added the implementation of various SAP SuccessFactors modules has helped the company improve process efficiency and enhance the overall employee experience. “We now have a single source of truth for all HR data across the organisation, which has significantly improved our decision-making at a management level. • "description": "Nice and Burundi defender Youssouf Ndayishimiye says he always hoped football would prove to be his route out of \"unimaginable poverty\".",
      • "content": "Growing up in Bujumbura, the largest city in Burundi, Youssouf Ndayishimiye always hoped football would prove to be his route out of \"unimaginable poverty\". After becoming the most expensive player in his country's history when he joined Nice in 2023 for a reported €11.5m ($13m, £9.75m), the 26-year-old is certainly a world away from a childhood which included often going without food and lacking basic necessities. \"I saw how much my mother loved us - but was unable to provide for us,\" he told BBC Great Lakes when recalling his early years. \"I felt I had to work tirelessly so as to lift my family out of this poverty. I had a clear vision for my life.\" Bujumbura, located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, is the commercial capital of a nation which is one of the world's poorest in terms of GDP per capita, according to the World Bank. Born in the Buyenzi area of the city, Ndayishimiye is the eldest of three siblings and has another five half-siblings. His family later moved to the \"dumpsite neighbourhood\" of Buterere. His skills on a football pitch helped him stand out even if, on occasion, he had to train barefoot. When bigger clubs came calling, he would even have to deal with bouts of jealousy from his peers. \"One day I had to borrow boots from a friend when a second division club, Les Lierres, had agreed to sign me,\" he said. \"I was devastated when he refused to lend me the boots [for a trial], but I didn't give up.\" After a spell playing for Aigle Noir in Burundi's southern province of Makamba, Ndayishimiye got his big break in Europe in January 2020 when he joined Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor. Just a year later he was on the move again, sealing a switch to Istanbul Basaksehir. The defender is now well settled on the Cote d'Azur as vice-captain of Nice. He has two children under five, is a committed Muslim, and retains links to his homeland with his support of Burundian musicians, whom he regularly listens to at home and in his car. The centre-back says his story should serve as an inspiration to others. \"I knew that there was no other way to help me get out of this life than through football,\" he said. \"You should not lose hope. Look at the homes you grew up in, look at your destitute families, then wake up early and work hard to get your families out of poverty. \"So, it is vital for the youth to keep hope, respect God and work hard. None of us were born with the success we've reached.\" Ndayishimiye's message about resilience will be important over the next few months, as he could be out of action until 2026 after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament in training last week. Ndayishimiye's performances in his first full Ligue 1 campaign with Nice were strong enough to see him nominated for the Prix Marc-Vivien Foe Award, an award handed to the best African footballer in France. Before suffering his injury, Ndayishimiye was leading from the front in the club's bid to reach the Champions League and, while wearing the captain's armband, he netted the killer third goal against Paris St-Germain last month. That header kept his side in the hunt for a place at Europe's top table and ended PSG's hopes of becoming the first team to complete an unbeaten season in the French top flight. While usually taking acclaim from the stands at the Allianz Riviera, Ndayishimiye is well aware that playing in Europe comes with its downsides. \"Some of my team-mates here have been racially abused,\" he said. \"I always tell them 'let's focus on the job that brought us here. Let's shut those jealous people up with our performances'. \"Frankly, racism is like a pandemic - undefeatable anytime soon.\" Ndayishimiye is proud of being black, but feels there is little he can do to combat discrimination in the game. \"Even before us, Yaya Toure tried his best, Samuel Eto'o tried but they couldn't succeed,\" he said. \"I can't do anything about it. I have no power. \"If I'm abused, it won't affect me because I know why I came – just to play football.\" Even if Ndayishimiye makes his bow in the Champions League next season, he is still waiting to play at a major international tournament. He was \"heartbroken\" to miss out on a place in Burundi's squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nation (Afcon) as a 20-year-old, and the Swallows have not managed to qualify for the finals since. However, he is bullish about the country's chances of returning to Afcon in the near future – and going far at the tournament. \"There might be some challenges we don't always talk about, internal hurdles that we have to overcome, but ahead are three Afcons I want to lead my team to,\" he said. \"I'm now confident that I'll lead the Swallows to the upcoming 2027, 2029 and 2031 tournaments - and I believe that we will lift one of them.\" Meanwhile, Ndayishimiye is remembering his roots as he looks to the future. He has ambitions to set up a football academy back in Burundi to support children from underprivileged families. \"A football career has a limited time span and I know that I have to make some savings, keeping in mind my poor background, so that I do not return to that life. \"That's advice I give my team-mates - manage your good salaries wisely so that we don't end up in regret. \"That's why, once I retire, I plan to open a school named after me.\"",

      • "content": "Cardinals electing a new pope have some fundamental questions to weigh, beyond whether to give the Catholic Church its first Asian or African pontiff, or a conservative or progressive.Although they come from 70 different countries, the 133 cardinals seem fundamentally united in finding a pope who will be able to make the 2,000-year-old church credible and relevant today, especially to young people. It’s a tall task, given the sexual abuse and financials scandals that have harmed the church’s reputation and the secularizing trends in many parts of the world that are turning people away from organized religion.Add to that the Holy See’s dire financial state and often dysfunctional bureaucracy, and the job of being pope in the 21st century seems almost impossible.“We need a superman!” said Cardinal William Seng Chye Goh, the 67-year-old archbishop of Singapore. The cardinals will begin trying to find him Wednesday afternoon, when those “princes of the church” walk solemnly into the Sistine Chapel to the meditative chant of the “Litany of the Saints.” They’ll take their oaths of secrecy under the daunting vision of heaven and hell in Michelangelo’s “Last Judgement,” hear a meditation from a senior cardinal, and then cast their first ballot.Assuming no candidate secures the necessary two-thirds majority, or 89 votes, the cardinals will retire for the day and return on Thursday. They will have two ballots in the morning and then two in the afternoon, until a winner is found. The church in AfricaAccording to Vatican statistics, Catholics represent 3.3% of the population in Asia, but their numbers are growing, especially in terms of seminarians, as they are in Africa, where Catholics represent about 20% of the population. Catholics are 64% of the population in the Americas, 40% of Europe’s population and 26% of Oceania’s population, according to Vatican statistics from 2023, the last available year.Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, the archbishop of Kinshasa, Congo, said he is in Rome to elect a pope for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.“I am not here for the Congo, I am not here for Africa, I am here for the universal church. That is our concern, the universal church,” he told reporters. “When we are done, I will return to Kinshasa and I will put back on my archbishop of Kinshasa hat and the struggle continues.”Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, the chatty French-born archbishop of Algiers, Algeria, lamented last week that there hadn’t been enough time for the cardinals to get to know one another, since many of them had never met before and hail from 70 countries in the most geographically diverse conclave in history.By this week, however, he said that any number of candidates were possible.Voting blocsItaly (17) has the most electors followed by the United States (10). Brazil (7), France and Spain (5 each) follow in third and fourth place respectively.Argentina, Canada, India, Poland and Portugal have 4 electors each. Here is a regional breakdown of the full 135 cardinal electors, according to Vatican statistics and following the Vatican’s geographic grouping.Europe: 53. (An elector who says he’s skipping the conclave is from Spain, so the actual number of Europeans is expected to be 52.)Asia (including the Middle East): 23Africa: 18. (Another elector who says he’s skipping the conclave is from Kenya, so the number of Africans is expected to be 17.)South America: 17North America: 16 (of whom 10 are American, 4 are Canadian and 2 are Mexican)Central America: 4Oceania: 4 (1 each from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga)Source: AfricanewsThe post Is an African pope a priority for the upcoming conclave? appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "description": "The Catholic Church in Kenya says he is unwell in response to reports that he had not been invited.",
      • "content": "The Catholic Church in Kenya has responded to concerns that the country's only cardinal will not be participating in the election of the next pope because he had not been asked to attend. Following Pope Francis' death last month, senior Catholic leaders, known as cardinals, who are younger than 80, are eligible to elect his successor. They are due to begin meeting in the Vatican on Wednesday, but Kenyan Cardinal John Njue, 79, was quoted in a Kenyan newspaper saying that he had not been invited and he did not know why. Catholic officials in Kenya later said that he had been invited but was not able to go because of ill health. \"Although [the cardinal] is eligible to participate and was officially invited... owing to his current health condition [he] will be unable to travel to Rome,\" a statement signed by Archbishop Philip Anyolo said. \"Let us also continue to pray for the good health of His Eminence John Cardinal Njue.\" The archbishop did not explain the health issues further. Tuesday's statement by the Nairobi archdiocese noted that it was reacting to concerns over Cardinal Njue's participation and \"various enquiries\" about whether he would be at the cardinals' meeting, known as a conclave. The Daily Nation newspaper had quoted him as saying that he had not been invited adding that \"it is not because of health... I don't know really... it's difficult to comment about it\". Cardinal Njue was the Archbishop of Nairobi from 2007 until his retirement in 2021. He was appointed a cardinal in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI becoming the second cardinal to have come from the country. He and Spain's Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, 79, are the only cardinals who will not be participating in the papal vote out the 135 who are eligible. A two-thirds majority, or at least 89 of them, are required to elect the new pontiff and successor of Pope Francis to lead the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. • "content": "By Jones GadamaIn a significant development aimed at bridging the digital divide in Africa, Airtel Africa has announced a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed internet services to its customers across the continent, including Malawi. This collaboration marks a major milestone in expanding digital access, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach regions.According to Airtel Africa Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Taldar, the partnership will ensure that customers have reliable and affordable voice and data connectivity, even in the most remote areas.“Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community has reliable and affordable connectivity even in the most remote parts of Africa,” Taldar said. The partnership leverages Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, which can bypass the need for expensive ground-based infrastructure, making it possible to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to even the most remote corners of Africa. With Starlink’s constellation of over 6,750 LEO satellites, Airtel Africa aims to extend its reach beyond the limits of traditional cell towers and fiber networks.SpaceX has already acquired the necessary licenses to operate in 9 of the 14 countries where Airtel Africa has a presence. These countries include Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Rwanda, Niger, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chad. The companies are working on securing licenses for the remaining five countries. This partnership is expected to have a transformative impact on Malawi and the broader African continent.By providing high-speed internet access to remote schools, health centers, and businesses, the collaboration will help bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion.Airtel Africa will also explore using Starlink for cellular backhaul to extend rural coverage, enabling mobile network coverage in areas where laying cables or building infrastructure is cost-prohibitive.The partnership offers benefits for both companies. Airtel Africa will enhance its next-generation satellite connectivity offerings, while SpaceX will leverage Airtel’s ground network infrastructure and capabilities in Africa. This collaboration will enable SpaceX to expand its reach and subscriber base, while Airtel Africa will gain a significant edge in expanding rural coverage and improving overall network quality.“Starlink welcomes the opportunity to join forces with important industry leaders to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from Starlink’s presence,” said Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX.He added,”The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering across Africa makes great sense for our business”.As Africa continues to navigate the complexities of digital development, partnerships like this one between Airtel Africa and SpaceX will play a crucial role in shaping the continent’s digital future. With approximately 600 million people in Africa lacking internet access, this collaboration has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of millions of people. The post Airtel Africa partners with Spacex to revolutionize internet connectivity in Malawi and beyond appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "By Jones GadamaIn Malawi, the Catholic Church has emerged as a significant player in the political landscape, often taking a stand against government policies and actions. This phenomenon raises important questions about the nature of religious engagement in politics, the historical context of the Catholic Church in Malawi, and the comparative silence of other religious groups, particularly the Muslim community. This analysis seeks to explore the reasons behind the Catholic Church’s active political involvement, the implications of its pastoral letters, and the broader context of religious engagement in governance in Malawi. The Catholic Church in Malawi has a long-standing tradition of social teaching and moral advocacy, rooted in its theological framework that emphasizes the dignity of the human person, the common good, and the preferential option for the poor. These principles compel the Church to speak out against injustices and to hold the government accountable for its actions. The Church’s engagement in political discourse is not merely a reaction to specific events but is deeply embedded in its mission to promote social justice and moral integrity. This mission is articulated through pastoral letters, which serve as a platform for the bishops to address pressing social and political issues, often critiquing government policies that they perceive as detrimental to the welfare of the people. One of the key reasons for the Catholic Church’s active political stance is its hierarchical structure, which allows for a unified voice on critical issues. The bishops, as leaders of the Church, are seen as moral authorities, and their pastoral letters carry significant weight in public discourse. This centralized leadership enables the Church to respond swiftly and decisively to political developments, making it a formidable force in advocating for social justice. In contrast, other religious groups, such as the Muslim community, may lack a similar hierarchical structure or may prioritize different aspects of their faith, leading to a more subdued political presence. The historical context of the Catholic Church in Malawi also plays a crucial role in its political engagement. The Church has been a significant player in the country’s history, particularly during the struggle for independence and the subsequent fight against authoritarian regimes. The legacy of this involvement has shaped the Church’s identity as a defender of human rights and a voice for the marginalized. This historical backdrop provides a foundation for the Church’s current political activism, as it continues to advocate for democratic governance and social justice in a country that has faced numerous challenges, including corruption, poverty, and human rights abuses. Moreover, the Catholic Church’s educational and health institutions have positioned it as a key player in the social fabric of Malawi. With a vast network of schools, hospitals, and community programs, the Church has established itself as a provider of essential services, earning the trust and respect of the population. This social capital enhances the Church’s credibility when it speaks out on political issues, as it is viewed as an institution that genuinely cares for the well-being of the people. The Church’s involvement in social services also allows it to gather firsthand information about the challenges faced by ordinary citizens, further informing its political stance. In contrast, the Muslim community in Malawi has historically been less vocal in political matters. Several factors contribute to this relative silence. Firstly, the Muslim community is smaller in number compared to the Catholic population, which may limit its influence in the broader political discourse. Additionally, the Muslim community in Malawi has often focused on internal community issues, such as education and social welfare, rather than engaging directly with the political system. This inward focus may stem from a desire to maintain unity within the community and avoid potential divisions that could arise from political disagreements.Furthermore, the Muslim community in Malawi may also be influenced by the broader socio-political context, where religious identity can be a sensitive issue. In a country where Christianity is the dominant religion, Muslims may feel marginalized or hesitant to engage in political discourse for fear of backlash or discrimination. This dynamic can create a climate of caution, where the community prioritizes its internal cohesion over external political engagement. As a result, the Muslim community has not developed a tradition of issuing public statements or letters that critique government actions, unlike the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church’s willingness to engage in political discourse can also be attributed to its commitment to the principle of the common good. The Church teaches that the state has a moral obligation to promote the welfare of all its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable. When the government fails to uphold this responsibility, the Church feels compelled to intervene and advocate for change. This moral imperative is reflected in the pastoral letters issued by the bishops, which often highlight issues such as corruption, human rights abuses, and social inequality. By addressing these issues, the Church seeks to hold the government accountable and encourage a more just and equitable society. The impact of the Catholic Church’s political engagement is evident in the public response to its pastoral letters. These letters often resonate with the population, as they articulate the frustrations and concerns of ordinary citizens. The Church’s moral authority lends credibility to its critiques, and many people view the bishops as champions of social justice. This connection between the Church and the people reinforces the Church’s role as a key player in the political landscape, as it mobilizes public opinion and encourages civic engagement. However, the Catholic Church’s political involvement is not without challenges. The Church faces criticism from various quarters, including government officials who may perceive its critiques as interference in state affairs. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential for politicization of the Church, where its moral authority could be undermined by perceived partisan alignment. The Church must navigate these challenges carefully, balancing its prophetic voice with the need to maintain its credibility and integrity as a religious institution. In conclusion, the Catholic Church’s active engagement in political discourse in Malawi is rooted in its theological principles, historical context, and social mission. The Church’s hierarchical structure and established credibility as a provider of social services enable it to speak out on critical issues and hold the government accountable. In contrast, the relative silence of the Muslim community can be attributed to its smaller size, internal focus, and the socio-political dynamics of the country. As Malawi continues to grapple with challenges related to governance and social justice, the role of the Catholic Church as a moral voice in the political arena remains crucial. Its pastoral letters serve not only as critiques of government actions but also as calls to action for the entire society, urging a collective commitment to the common good and the promotion of human dignity. The ongoing dialogue between faith and politics in Malawi will undoubtedly shape the future of the nation, as religious institutions continue to navigate their roles in an ever-evolving political landscape. The post The role of the Catholic Church in political discourse in Malawi: An in-depth analysis appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) party went to court on Tuesday to challenge the Employment Equity Amendment Act, in the latest crisis in the country’s government of national unity. It strongly opposes section 15(A) of the new law which allows the labour minister to introduce numerical targets in some economic sectors. This will require businesses with more than 50 employees to ensure their workforce reflects historically disadvantaged groups, including black people, women, and those living with disabilities. The DA argues that this is unconstitutional and that employment should be based on skill and merit, rather than race, gender, or disability status. It has described the legislation as “anti-transformative” and says it will result in job losses. The African National Congress (ANC) party labour minister has labelled the legal action as a “clear attempt to halt transformation in the workplace and preserve historical inequalities”.The court battle signals the latest clash between the DA and the ANC, the two biggest parties in government of national unity.A recent challenge to a planned increase in Value Added Tax saw them at loggerheads, with many suggesting the fragile unity government could collapse as a result of their differences. That conflict was resolved through a court challenge by the DA, supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters party, which saw the country scrap plans to hike VAT by 1 percentage point over two years.Source: AfricanewsThe post South Africa’s DA party goes to court over employment equity quota appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "By Jones GadamaThe political landscape in Malawi has been marred by a series of electoral disputes, culminating in the anticipated nullification of the 2025 presidential elections scheduled for September 16. The High Court’s potential decision to annul these elections is rooted in a history of massive irregularities that have plagued the electoral process in the country. This analysis delves into the implications of these irregularities, the historical context of electoral disputes in Malawi, and the broader ramifications for democracy and governance in the nation. The backdrop to the current electoral crisis is the 2019 presidential elections, which were initially won by Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). However, the Constitutional Court nullified these results, citing significant irregularities that undermined the integrity of the electoral process. This landmark decision was a pivotal moment in Malawi’s democratic journey, as it underscored the judiciary’s role in upholding electoral integrity and the rule of law.The court’s ruling not only set a precedent for future elections but also highlighted the vulnerabilities within the electoral system that could be exploited by political actors.Fast forward to 2025, and the specter of electoral irregularities looms large once again. The opposition DPP has raised alarms about the integrity of the upcoming elections, alleging that the electoral commission, led by Anabel Mtalimanji, has failed to address numerous concerns regarding the electoral process. These allegations of irregularities are not merely political posturing; they reflect a deep-seated mistrust in the electoral system and the institutions tasked with overseeing it. The opposition’s claims, if substantiated, could lead to a repeat of the 2019 scenario, where the High Court intervened to protect the democratic process. The role of the electoral commission is critical in ensuring free and fair elections. Anabel Mtalimanji’s refusal to rectify the alleged irregularities raises questions about the commission’s impartiality and effectiveness. The perception of bias or incompetence within the electoral body can erode public confidence in the electoral process, leading to widespread disillusionment among voters. In a country where political tensions are already high, any perceived failure by the electoral commission to uphold its mandate could trigger unrest and exacerbate divisions among the populace.Polling day is often the culmination of the electoral process, and it is during this period that the integrity of the elections is put to the ultimate test. Reports of irregularities on polling day, such as voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and discrepancies in voter registration, can severely undermine the legitimacy of the electoral outcome. If these issues are not addressed proactively, they could lead to a situation where the High Court is once again called upon to nullify the elections, further destabilizing the political landscape. The implications of a nullification are profound. Firstly, it would signal a failure of the electoral system to deliver a credible outcome, raising questions about the viability of democracy in Malawi.A repeated cycle of nullifications could lead to voter apathy, as citizens may begin to feel that their votes do not matter in a system that appears to be rigged or manipulated. This disillusionment can have long-term consequences for democratic engagement, as citizens may withdraw from the political process altogether. Moreover, the potential for civil unrest cannot be overlooked. The 2019 elections were marked by widespread protests and demonstrations, as citizens took to the streets to demand accountability and transparency in the electoral process.A similar scenario in 2025 could lead to heightened tensions and violence, particularly if the opposition mobilizes its supporters in response to perceived injustices. The government’s response to such unrest would be critical; heavy-handed tactics could exacerbate the situation, leading to a cycle of violence and repression. The international community is also watching closely.Malawi’s reputation as a democratic nation is at stake, and any failure to conduct free and fair elections could result in diplomatic repercussions.Donor countries and international organizations may reconsider their support for Malawi, which could have dire economic consequences for a nation that relies heavily on foreign aid.The loss of international credibility could further isolate Malawi on the global stage, making it difficult to attract investment and support for development initiatives. In light of these potential outcomes, it is imperative for all stakeholders in the electoral process to prioritize the integrity of the elections. The electoral commission must take the allegations of irregularities seriously and work transparently to address them. This includes engaging with opposition parties, civil society organizations, and the public to build trust and confidence in the electoral process.Additionally, the judiciary must remain vigilant and independent, ready to intervene if necessary to uphold the rule of law and protect the democratic rights of citizens.Furthermore, civil society plays a crucial role in monitoring the electoral process and advocating for transparency and accountability.By mobilizing citizens and raising awareness about their rights, civil society organizations can help ensure that the voices of the electorate are heard and respected. This grassroots engagement is essential for fostering a culture of democratic participation and accountability. The 2025 presidential elections in Malawi are at a critical juncture, with the potential for massive irregularities to once again undermine the democratic process. The historical context of electoral disputes, coupled with the current allegations against the electoral commission, paints a concerning picture for the future of democracy in the country. The implications of a nullification would be far-reaching, affecting not only the political landscape but also the social fabric of the nation. It is essential for all stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted fairly and transparently, safeguarding the democratic rights of all Malawians. The path forward requires a commitment to integrity, accountability, and the rule of law, as the nation navigates the complexities of its electoral future. The post Malawi’s electoral crisis: A repeat of 2019? appeared first on The Maravi Post.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization)WESTERN EQUATORIA, South Sudan, May 6, 2025/APO Group/ -- In volatile South Sudan, people across the country crave peace and stability more than anything else. In a bid to make that dream a local reality, the Kozi and Mambe communities in Maridi County have established what they call a Protection Peace Committee. “You are now ambassadors of peace. You should share your new skills and knowledge with your fellow citizens,” Anthony Moudle, a Protection, Transition and Reintegration Officer serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) told the members of the new committee and the 50 people who participated in a workshop conducted by the peacekeeping mission. The training, held over three days, aimed at raising awareness on protection of civilians and other aspects of the UNMISS mandate among those in attendance, including traditional chiefs, police officers, civil society representatives and religious leaders. Some sessions were dedicated to identifying and discussing the practical application of different approaches to sharing security-relevant information and the peaceful resolution of conflicts at an early stage, before they risk escalating. “Learning these skills will no doubt help us tackle challenges quickly, for example the misunderstandings that often arise between farmers and migrating cattle keepers,” said Justin Bidal, himself a grower of crops. Addressing differences of opinions in an amicable manner is something that local churches have always been recommending, using their significant influence to promote such solutions and the social cohesion they can bring. “We need peaceful relations and stability, and it is good for everyone to understand that the methods we are proposing are in line with what UNMISS suggests,” commented Phillip Mathew, the Kozy Archdeacon. Facilitators of the workshop also managed to dispel the common and at times confusion-inducing misconception that the UN peacekeeping mission and other UN entities, not least humanitarian agencies, operating in South Sudan are all focused on the same issues. “Now I finally understand that their roles are different, with UNMISS supporting peacebuilding efforts while the others are providing services and humanitarian assistance. That is good to know, and something I will share with my community,” said one participant, Monicca Awadia. This particular learning experience may have concluded, but hopes are high that the Protection Peace Committee will make its legacy long-lasting. Frazer Samuel Kalusi, a Kozi Chief, gave that optimism a voice. “There has been a lot of darkness taking over our country in recent years, but we can do our part. Our eyes have been opened and we are ready to use our new perspective and knowledge to do everything we can to bring back the light.” MENAFN06052025002747001784ID1109514332 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "content": "( MENAFN - EIN Presswire) G20 South Africa 2025 IF20 South Africa Ubuntu in Action: Focus on Vulnerable Communities The Cape Town event is inspired by G20 South Africa's theme,“Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability“ and the overarching African philosophy of Ubuntu.” - Dr. Marianna Richardson, IF20 Director of CommunicationsCAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, May 6, 2025 /EINPresswire / -- The G20 Interfaith Forum (IF20) will hold its major 2025 Forum event from August 10-14 in Cape Town, South Africa. The gathering will bring together diverse stakeholders, including people from various faiths, other civil society organizations, government representatives, and multilateral entities, as well as academia. The Cape Town event is inspired by South Africa's theme,“Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,“ and the overarching African philosophy of Ubuntu with which South Africa approaches its G20 Presidency. Like South Africa, the G20 Interfaith Forum recognizes that neither individuals nor nations can thrive in isolation and that global priorities should ensure that no one is left behind. The IF20's key 2025 priorities align with the priority areas of the 20th G20 Summit, that will be held on 22-23 November 2025 in Gauteng, South Africa. OBJECTIVES The IF20's mandate is to contribute to a more just world and a sustainable future by drawing on and enriching the multifaceted ideas, experiences, activities, and contributions of religious and faith actors across the world. The gathering offers the opportunity to harness the transformative potential of religion and faith-inspired actors to advance global sustainable development agendas (and specifically the United Nations SDGs). We aim to foster a more just, equitable, and sustainable world by focusing on advocacy efforts and actions that build on the rich experience of countless communities at local, national, and international levels. The IF20 thus draws on the work as a true“network of networks.” G20 INTERFAITH'S PRIORITY AREAS OF FOCUS: The context of South Africa's priority themes of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability guides the IF20's 2025 work. For faith communities, the absolute priority is to give practical meaning to“Leaving No One Behind.” Priority areas of focus are as follows: 1. Food security and poverty. Food security, with its strong links to addressing poverty and inequality, is a leading issue, driving the Global Alliance launched by the G20 in Brazil and inspiring both South Africa and the African Union. The topic extends from the very local to the very global. IF20 supports this multisector program, aiming to show convincingly that religious institutions are major players, and how our (G20 Interfaith) commitments can enhance transnational and national efforts. IF20 builds on global multifaith efforts to address hunger, including by the World Council of Churches, Caritas organizations, PaRD, World Vision, Islamic Relief, LDS Charities, and countless others. 2. Economic and Financial Action. Fiscal and debt crises confronting many countries, concentrated in Africa, dampen poverty alleviation and climate action, as well as government capacities to provide basic services like education, health care, water supply, disaster response, and job creation. Religious communities link the economic and financial issues to equity and thriving, notably through their focus on 2025 as a Jubilee year. Action to mobilize public finance nationally and multilaterally can ensure debt sustainability and mobilize finance for sustainable and equitable development. 3. Addressing interreligious tensions through education and enhancing understanding of religious matters. The foundational Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy (CCRL) program and Arigatou International's Ethics Education and Learning to Live Together programs offer potential to strengthen regional and global approaches and address issues of violence and conflict linked to religious actors. Priority efforts directed to reinforce social cohesion are integral to education policies and to broader issues of trust and information, religious approaches to ethics and practice offer contributions to the fast-developing fields of Artificial Intelligence. Many religious groups work to address gender-based violence and action to support women, children, and families-for example, their physical and mental health, inequalities, and fair, equitable treatment. 4. Migration and refugee movements, human trafficking, and modern slavery present major challenges, with special applications for Africa. IF20's continuing work highlights extensive religious teaching and practices supporting policies and action to support those on the move, especially those who are most vulnerable. Fear of migrants and refugees affects politics in many settings and call to religious advocacy for compassion and care. IF20's longstanding focus on the urgent need for multinational action on human trafficking will underpin 2025 advocacy. 5. Disaster prevention, response, recovery. Active religious involvement, as first responders, at regional and global levels and through policy and programmatic analysis, play vital roles. With rethinking at different levels on optimal approaches, the contributions of religious actors deserve greater focus. Disaster relief is closely tied to widely varied environmental challenges, including rainforest destruction and climate movements/migration, underlining the needed focus on prevention, building resilience, and meaningful response. BACKGROUND ON THE ORGANIZER The G20 Interfaith Forum (IF20) annual platform involves a network of religiously linked institutions and initiatives that engage on global agendas, including the SDGs. The G20 process has evolved since it was established in 2014, recognizing an expanding range of stakeholders and platforms that allow different sectors and communities to present ideas and recommendations to global leaders. The IF20 contributes insights and recommendations that respond to and help shape the G20 and thus global policy agendas, building on the vital roles that religious institutions and beliefs play in world affairs and reflecting their rich diversity of institutions, ideas, and values. Through its networks, the IF20 contributes not only to formulation but also to implementation of G20 policies, and to forging consensus on priorities shared by interfaith and intercultural organizations, religious leaders, scholars, and development and humanitarian entities. IF20's work with business and civil society actors and other key stakeholders contributes to the agenda for each Annual IF20 Forum, inspired each year by successive host governments. • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) The Advisory Committee (AC) successfully concluded its work and submitted yesterday to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) its final report containing options and recommendations to address contentious issues in Libya's current electoral framework. UNSMIL expresses its gratitude to the Advisory Committee for their professionalism and dedication to this important task, aimed at addressing the aspirations of the Libyan people. As a next step, UNSMIL will review and assess the recommendations outlined in the report and, in the coming days, will begin consultations with Libyan stakeholders and the wider public to reflect on the proposed options and through those consultations develop a consensus-based political roadmap to facilitate the holding of national elections and unifying institutions. In line with the principle of transparency, UNSMIL intends to publish the executive summary of the AC report. The AC is an integral part of the inclusive UNSMIL-facilitated, Libyan-led-and-owned political process aimed at resolving the current political deadlock. Established in line with paragraphs 2 and 5 of Security Council resolution 2755 (2024), the AC comprised 20 distinguished Libyan personalities (35% women) with expertise in legal, constitutional, and electoral issues, which the Mission will continue to draw on their expertise and advice as needed. UNSMIL remains committed to working with all Libyan stakeholders, with the support of the International Community, to advance the political process in a way that preserves stability while addressing the pressing problems facing the country. • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) UNSMIL is alarmed by the video circulating on social media purporting to show House of Representatives member, Ibrahim Al-Dersi detained, chained and with visible signs of torture. Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues during this difficult time as they are subjected to this disturbing video. UNSMIL has requested UN digital forensic experts to assess the authenticity of the video but also calls again on Libyan authorities to immediately initiate a fully independent investigation into the enforced disappearance of Mr Al-Dersi who has been missing since 16 May 2024, when he was abducted after attending a Libyan National Army parade in Benghazi. The Mission reiterates that it stands ready to support an independent investigation into the disappearance and allegations of torture. UNSMIL condemns the widespread and systemic abuses in detention facilities by law enforcement and security actors in Benghazi, Tripoli, Sabha, and other locations across Libya, which have been documented by the Mission and other independent UN mechanisms. These abuses are further exacerbated by the impunity that continues for perpetrators of these crimes. UNSMIL reminds all relevant authorities that arbitrary detentions, abductions, torture, enforced disappearances and deaths in custody are serious human rights violations and may constitute international crimes that can be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court. Libyan authorities must ensure these practices immediately cease and that perpetrators are brought to justice. The Mission also calls for a full and independent investigation of all alleged human rights violations in detention facilities and reiterates its call for the release of all individuals arbitrarily detained. • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan condemns in the strongest terms the deliberate aerial bombing of a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Old Fangak, Jonglei State - an atrocity crime that may constitute a grave breach of international humanitarian law and a war crime. The early morning airstrike on Saturday, 3 May 2025, obliterated the hospital, killing at least seven civilians and injuring many, including patients, caregivers, and medical staff. The attack destroyed critical medical infrastructure and the hospital's pharmacy, cutting off tens of thousands from critical lifesaving care. Credible reports confirm further aerial bombardments in the Phom area of New Fangak in the early hours of 5 May 2025, where bombs reportedly fell between the compound of an international non-governmental organisation and the County Commissioner's office. “This was not a tragic accident. It was a calculated, unlawful attack on a protected medical facility. The aerial bombing of the MSF hospital in Old Fangak is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and could amount to a war crime,” said Yasmin Sooka , Chair of the Commission.“Targeting medical facilities and services violates the Geneva Conventions and represents a direct assault on foundations of humanitarian action that are intended to protect civilians in conflict zones. Those responsible must be identified, investigated and held accountable without delay.” The attack followed a public statement by the spokesperson of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) on Friday, 2 May 2025, ordering retaliatory military action if hijacked vessels at Adok Port in Leer County were not immediately released by armed elements. The SSPDF warned that failure to comply would result in punitive aerial and riverine operations. This threat was issued shortly after the Government, in a strategic public announcement, categorized Nuer-majority counties by ethnicity into 'hostile' and 'friendly'-naming Fangak, home to tens of thousands of Nuer civilians, as one of nine 'hostile' counties in its document titled The Strategic Response of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) to the Nasir Incident. “This strike does not seem to be an isolated incident - it occurred in the context of escalating ethnic profiling, unlawful detentions, and a hardening of positions within the political and military elite,” said Commissioner Barney Afako .“Designating the entire community of Fangak as hostile is deeply irresponsible and may amount to incitement of reprisals and collective punishment. This practice must end, and such designations must be rescinded immediately.” The MSF hospital was the only major medical facility serving more than 40,000 people in the Old Fangak area. MSF confirmed the complete destruction of the hospital and medical supplies in the attack, which has deprived an already vulnerable population - displaced and traumatized by conflict - of emergency care, maternal health services. “The targeting of medical facilities is not only unlawful - it is inhumane,” said Commissioner Carlos Castresana Fernández .“Hospitals must be protected spaces, not battlegrounds. What happened in Old Fangak is symptomatic of a growing impunity and disregard for human life that must be urgently addressed.” The escalation in political tensions and violence in South Sudan poses a direct threat to the viability of South Sudan's transition and jeopardises the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement. The Commission urges the visiting delegations of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to press for the protection of civilians, and for accountability, and to urge signatories to the Agreement to return to political dialogue as the only means of addressing differences. The presence of AUC and IGAD in Juba should serve as a catalyst for urgent, high-level political engagement to urge all parties to return to dialogue and find their way back to implementing the Revitalized Agreement. The Commission further warns that repeated violations of the cessation of hostilities is driving the country dangerously close to another nationwide conflict.“The path South Sudan is currently on is perilous,” Sooka warned.“If attacks like these continue with impunity, the Peace Agreement risks becoming meaningless. The AU, IGAD and the international community must respond decisively.” Distributed by APO Group on behalf of United Nations: Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
