Russia-Ukraine War

Russia and Ukraine have had conflicting relations even before the Russian invasion started on February 23, 2022. The conflicts between the two countries date back to the year 2014. But it wasn’t until February 2022 that Russia declared war against Ukraine and commanded an invasion of Eastern Ukraine.

Russo-Ukraine War: Prelude (up to February 24th, 2022)

Initial Invasion (February 24th–April 7th, 2022)

  • Explosions were observed in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Donbas.
  • The Ukrainian government implemented Marshall Law in the country.
  • Faster invasion by Russian forces in eastern and southern Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian forces regained full control of Kharkiv city.
  • Russian forces took back control of Kupyansk City.
  • Russian forces bomb the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and take over Kherson City.
  • The International Court of Justice orders Russia to stop, which Russia disregards.

Southeastern Front (April 8th–August 28th, 2022)

    • UN General Assembly votes to suspend Russia’s Human Rights Council membership.
    • A missile attack by Russia on the Kramatorsk train.
    • Massive graves and dead civilians were discovered on the streets of Bucha.
    • Russian Black Sea fleet’s flagship, missile cruiser Moskva, sinks after being hit by Ukrainian missiles.

    • Russian forces take over the industrial city of Severodonetsk after prolonged battles.
    • Ukrainian forces liberate Snake Island, easing the threat to the main port of Odessa.

    • Ukraine’s counter-offensives to take back Kherson start in August 2022.

2022 Ukraine Counter Offensives (August 29th–November 11th, 2022)

      • Ukraine recaptures much of the Kharkiv region.
      • Putin mobilizes 3,00,000 conscripts, causing protests in Russia.
      • Russia forcefully takes over Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhya regions.
      • Blast damages Crimea-Russia linking bridge.
      • Massive bombardment of Ukrainian cities to damage vital infrastructure.

Second Statement (November 12th, 2022–June 7th, 2023)

      • Orders of withdrawal from Kherson City and the west bank of the Dnipro River were issued by Moscow.

      • Explosions at two Russian air bases by Ukrainian forces.

      • Attack by Ukraine on Donetsk building housing Russian troops in early January.
      • The U.S., Germany, and other NATO members agree to send heavy tanks to Ukraine.
      • Ukraine lost Soledar to Russia.

      • The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova for war crimes.
      • The IMF approved a $15.6 billion support package for Ukraine.
      • The Secretary of NATO announces acceptance of Ukraine as a member of NATO once the war is over.
      • Pavlohrad is attacked, and railway infrastructure and fuel depots of the city are damaged.

2023 Ukraine Counter Offensives (June 8th–November 30th, 2023)

        • Ukraine launches a major counteroffensive in the South.
        • Ukraine recaptures parts of Kherson Oblast.
        • Ukrainian forces were able to recapture the city of Kherson by November.
        • Another Ukrainian offensive in the East, but no significant progress.

2023–24 Winter Campaigns (December 1st–Present)
