      • "content": "Singapore Airlines has announced that the 2024/25 financial year was a record-breaking one for the carrier as far as some of the key financial metrics were concerned. Most notably, the wider Singapore Airlines Group 's profits and revenues were higher than they've ever been before, underlining a strong 12 months for the Asian giant. The carrier's fortunes were boosted by the Air India-Vistara merger. Singapore Airlines' strong financial performance in 2024 is emblematic of its, and the wider commercial aviation industry's, ongoing post-pandemic recovery, with airlines and airports around the world enjoying navigating the calmer waters than the choppy COVID-19 years. Although there is still plenty of economic uncertainty around due to geopolitical developments, Singapore Airlines remains confident. Singapore Airlines' Net Profit Reached Record Levels Thanks To A Billion-Dollar Boost In the 2024/25 financial year, the Singapore Airlines Group saw its revenues rise by $527 million (+2.8%) year-on-year to a total figure of $19.54 billion. This represented a record revenue for the group, which cited \"resilient demand for air travel and cargo uplift\" as key factors in its growth. However, its operating profit of $1.7 billion actually represented a $1 billion (37%) reduction compared to the previous year. This was due to increased expenditure across the board in what turned out to be a rather pricey year for the flag carrier and Star Alliance member, despite its strong revenue performance. Still, it was able to score a record net profit of $2.8 billion thanks to a \" one-off non-cash accounting gain of $1.1 billion from the Air India-Vistara merger .\" As far as what this means for shares goes, the Group explains: \"The Board of Directors has recommended a final dividend of 30 cents per share for FY2024/25. Including the interim dividend of 10 cents per share paid on December 11th, 2024, the total dividend for FY2024/25 will be 40 cents per share, representing a total dividend distribution of $1.2 billion for the year. Subject to shareholders’ approval at the Annual General Meeting on July 25th, 2025, the final dividend (tax exempt, one-tier) will be paid on August 27th, 2025, for shareholders as of August 11th, 2025.\" Passenger Numbers Were Up But Load Factors Were Down Collectively speaking, the carriers of the wider Singapore Airlines Group, namely Singapore Airlines itself and its low-cost subsidiary Scoot , carried 39.4 million passengers in 2024. This represented an 8.1% year-on-year increase, with passenger flown revenue coming in at $15.85 billion. However, the Singapore Airlines Group's load factor did drop slightly, falling by a factor of 1.4% to 86.6% This was because, while the group's passenger traffic did grow by a factor of 6.4% year-on-year, this was outranked by Singapore Airlines' 8.2% increase when it came to passenger capacity. On the cargo side of things, the wider Singapore Airlines Group's revenues in this division rose by 4.4% to $94 million in 2024. According to Singapore Airlines, this was \" buoyed by the strong demand for e-commerce and perishables, as well as the spillover from disruptions to sea freight .\" The project is expected to take around two years to complete. Singapore Airlines Has Big Plans For The Rest Of 2025 As noted in the table embedded below, the overall Singapore Airlines Group fleet at the end of the 2024/25 financial year consisted of 205 aircraft. Of these, 70.73% were accounted for by Singapore Airlines itself, with Scoot and Singapore Airlines Cargo respectively accounting for 25.85% and 3.42% of the Group's overall total. Last month, an Airbus A321neo and a Boeing 787-8 'Dreamliner' joined the group's fleet, meaning that, at the start of May, it had outstanding orders for 78 aircraft. Singapore Airlines Group Fleets Division Aircraft as of March 31st, 2025 Singapore Airlines 145 Singapore Airlines Cargo 7 Scoot 53 Singapore Airlines is looking forward to a busy year of growth in the rest of 2025, with several destinations from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) set to see schedule boosts in the Northern Summer season. These include Brisbane, Colombo, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London Gatwick, Manila, and Seattle. Meanwhile, \" Scoot launched services to Iloilo City in April and will begin operations to Vienna in June .\"",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed on Thursday (May 15) that Indonesian academic Muhammad Zulfikar Rakhmat was subjected to \"interview and checks on arrival\" at Changi Airport on two separate occasions in 2023, as he had \"attracted our security attention\". For instance, he had made online postings that support the actions of the Islamic State, said MHA in response to CNA's queries. On those two occasions, he was subsequently allowed entry to board an outgoing flight the following day. \"We will not hesitate to take action, including stopping at our checkpoints for checks and interviews, or even denying entry into Singapore, any foreigners whom we assess may pose a security threat to our country and society,\" said MHA. \"Entry into Singapore is a privilege, not a right, and foreigners should not expect to be automatically granted entry, nor let in without checks as we deem necessary.\" THE TWO INCIDENTS In an article published on the website of the Middle East Monitor, which describes itself as an \"independent media research institution\", Dr Zulfikar recounted being \"detained and interrogated at Changi Airport\" twice in 2023 for his \"work as an academic and journalist who writes on Middle Eastern affairs, especially Palestine\". The first incident took place in February 2023 while transiting through Singapore with his wife on their way back to Indonesia from South Korea. He said he was stopped at immigration and taken to a room where he was questioned about his background, travel history in the Middle East, and his academic and journalistic work. He also alleged that his phone was seized and examined. He added that a similar incident occurred in September 2023 when he passed through Singapore during a flight from South Korea to Indonesia. According to the Middle East Monitor website, Dr Zulfikar is the director of the Indonesia-Middle East and North Africa desk at the Centre for Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) in Jakarta, and a research affiliate at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore (NUS). On the NUS Middle East Institute website, he is listed as an honorary appointee of its research department and described as a research professor at the Busan University of Foreign Studies. According to the site, he has several publications under his name, and his opinions have been published in The Diplomat, Asia Sentinel, and The Conversation.",

      • "content": "Six Premier League teams separated by six points are battling it out for the four remaining Champions League spots with two rounds of matches left and no team can rest easy, although they have all secured European football for next season. Champions Liverpool are on a victory lap with nothing left to play for while the bottom three have all been relegated, leaving just the race for Europe's premier club competition to be wrapped up as a gruelling season draws to a close. Arsenal, long seen as title contenders before their challenge faded away amid a Champions League run, are no longer assured of second place but Mikel Arteta's side still control their destiny ahead of Newcastle United's visit on Sunday. Newcastle are up to third and sit two points behind Arsenal, with Eddie Howe's side tantalisingly close to finishing second in the Premier League for the first time in 28 years. The North-East side have shown a hunger to return to the Champions League, evidenced by their recent run of seven wins in nine games to move up from sixth place. Only Liverpool have taken more points in the last 20 games while Newcastle also ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy when they won the League Cup. \"We're on the road to what we want to do this season, but there's still a lot of work to do and two tough fixtures to play,\" Howe said. \"The size of the prize is huge, the players are aware of that. There was a worry when we won the trophy (League Cup) that there would be a negative consequence of that, but I think it actually gave us confidence.\" TOO MANY DRAWS Arteta, meanwhile, has seen his Arsenal team share the spoils in 14 draws this season, while injuries and the suspension of Mikel Merino will force him to rejig a side who have won only one of their last six games. Forward Kai Havertz has returned to training early after the club feared his season was over due to a hamstring surgery, but whether he is ready to play a part remains to be seen. \"I have full trust in all my players and we have full clarity in what we want to do,\" Arteta said. \"It will be a tough game and we want to secure the Champions League and the second spot as well. \"If you cannot be the best, then you have to be the best of the rest. That is very important.\" Manchester City are playing in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace this weekend and may find themselves outside the top five before they host Bournemouth on Tuesday. Chelsea are two points behind City and welcome Manchester United, who have all but given up on their domestic season and have fielded second-string lineups to focus on next Wednesday's Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. But Enzo Maresca has no striker available with Nicolas Jackson suspended and Christopher Nkunku still sidelined with an injury as they look to retain their spot in the top five. \"We have been there all season and we are now there, for sure it can be a disappointment (if we do not qualify),\" Maresca said. VILLA IN THE HUNT Sixth-placed Aston Villa reached the Champions League quarter-finals this season and manager Unai Emery would love nothing more than to qualify for the competition again. Villa, who host a Spurs team with their minds on the Europa League final, are level with Chelsea on 63 points but have the worst goal difference among the teams vying for Europe, with seventh-placed Nottingham Forest in the mix a point behind. \"The first objective is to try and play in Europe again and we are feeling comfortable with the pressure we are setting ourselves,\" Emery said. The penultimate weekend also sees Everton looking to give Goodison Park, their home for 133 years, a fitting farewell when they host already-relegated Southampton in their 2,789th and final game at 'The Grand Old Lady'. \"The game is almost playing second-fiddle and that's nice,\" Everton captain Phil Jagielka said. \"Because a few seasons ago we would have been going into a game at this point of the season needing points (to avoid relegation).\" Leicester City will bid their talismanic striker Jamie Vardy a fond farewell when the 38-year-old plays his 500th game for the club in his last appearance at King Power Stadium.",

      • "content": "TAIPEI: Taiwan cannot rule out that China will hold more military drills to \"stir up trouble\" around the one year anniversary next week of President Lai Ching-te taking office, a senior government spokesperson said on Thursday (May 15). May 20 will be one year since Lai's inauguration, though his office has yet to announce how the president might mark the day. China calls Lai a \"separatist\" and has rebuffed his multiple offers for talks. Lai rejects China's sovereignty claims over the democratic and separately governed island, saying only Taiwan's people can decide their future. Speaking at a regular press conference, Mainland Affairs Council deputy head and spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh said China's threats against Taiwan had become a \"normal state of affairs\", noting China held drills shortly after Lai assumed his post last year. \"Therefore, we do not rule out the possibility that the Chinese communists will use the anniversary of President Lai's inauguration to stir up trouble again and make use of military exercises for political propaganda,\" he said. The council is Taiwan's top China policymaking body. China's Taiwan Affairs Office referred Reuters to comments it gave the previous day. Asked about the upcoming anniversary on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the office said Lai was a \"Taiwan Strait crisis maker\" who had increased antagonism and confrontation and undermined peace and stability. China's defence ministry repeated the comments on Thursday. Taiwan said China staged another of its regular \"joint combat readiness patrols\" around the island on Sunday, and the defence ministry in Taipei has since reported a rise in Chinese military activities, involving a total of 131 aircraft and 32 warships. Liang said that Lai had faced a series of \"unfriendly\" Chinese actions over the past year, including war games. \"Over the past year, I would not say that the interactions between the two sides have been very good - they are indeed tense - but we do not wish to see the situation go on like this,\" he added. \"We hope that after May 20, the Chinese communists will not engage in military exercises.\" Last month, China held war games code-named \"Strait Thunder-2025A\" around Taiwan, the \"A\" at its end suggesting there could be more to come. China called its May 2024 drills \"Joint Sword - 2024A\", and in October of that year staged \"Joint Sword - 2024B\".",

      • "content": "CHARLOTTE, North Carolina :Masters champion Rory McIlroy began the PGA Championship with a birdie on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club where he was playing alongside Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele in a group featuring the world's top three players. The trio all had birdie putts at their opening hole, the par-five 10th, where McIlroy sank his from 10 feet, defending champion Schauffele rolled his in from five feet while Scheffler settled for par after his birdie attempt slid wide of the cup. McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam at last month's Masters, showed up at the 10th hole wearing a dark green polo shirt and just missed the fairway with his tee shot and left his second shot in the rough to the left of the green. The Northern Irishman is attempting to start 2025 by winning the first two major championships of the year, something only five golfers have done over the last 70 years. Quail Hollow is a happy hunting ground for McIlroy, who won the PGA Tour's regular stop here for a record-extending fourth time last year and set the course record in 2015. New Zealand's Ryan Fox was the early on-course leader after going three under over his first six holes. The early starters were greeted with sunny skies and soggy fairways, a remnant of the rain that hammered the course earlier in the week and limited the amount of practice players were able to get in ahead of the year's second major. Despite the wet conditions, the PGA of America announced late on Wednesday that there was no plan to play with preferred lies, which allows players to lift, clean, and replace their balls within designated areas. Jordan Spieth, making his ninth attempt at securing a career Grand Slam, and Justin Thomas, who won the first of his two PGA Championship titles when it was last held at Quail Hollow in 2017, are among the late starters. Among the other notable players with late tee times are U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, 2025 Masters runner-up Justin Rose and world number four Collin Morikawa.",

      • "content": "TOKYO: Japanese oil companies are scaling back decarbonisation initiatives, including hydrogen and ammonia projects, amid a global shift towards more stable and cost-effective fossil fuels. The move reflects mounting concerns over energy security, US policy risks, and rising material costs driven by inflation, all of which undermine project profitability and predictability. Across the global energy sector, companies that had reoriented their portfolios to address climate change are increasingly refocusing on oil and gas, where returns have become more attractive following a rebound in fossil fuel prices from pandemic-era lows. \"The trend toward a carbon-neutral society is slowing, and the full-scale bifurcation of the energy transition, previously expected around 2030, may be delayed,\" Eneos Holdings CEO Tomohide Miyata told a news conference this week. Japan's largest refiner is in no rush to supply hydrogen and ammonia, as surging costs are clouding the likelihood of capital investment, Miyata added. In its new three-year business strategy through March 2028, Eneos removed its previous target of supplying up to 4 million metric tons of hydrogen by fiscal year 2040. Instead, stable and affordable energy, including oil, has become more important amid the rising cost of decarbonisation technologies, Miyata said, adding the company would ramp up investment in liquefied natural gas. Idemitsu Kosan, Japan's No 2 refiner, has trimmed decarbonisation investment plans, cutting its budget for initiatives such as hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels from ¥1 trillion (US$6.9 billion) to around ¥800 billion for the period from fiscal 2023 to 2030, President Noriaki Sakai said this week. \"We sense that the momentum toward decarbonisation is slowing somewhat ... and believe it is necessary to adopt a flexible approach regarding both the pathway and timeline to achieving a carbon-neutral society by 2050,\" he said. While the global slowdown in low-carbon solutions has become increasingly evident, these remarks are among the most explicit to date from Japanese oil executives to acknowledge it. In February, BP revamped its strategy to cut spending on renewables and lower-carbon solutions while increasing annual oil and gas spending. Norway's Equinor scrapped its 2030 target for investments in renewables and low-carbon solutions. At the energy sector's annual conference in Houston in March, executives from both fossil fuel and renewable companies touted the need to shift from \"energy transition\" to \"energy additions\".",

      • "content": "A man in the UK has been arrested after police discovered he was harboring a cache of stolen Pokémon cards worth £250,000 (approx. $332,500). As spotted by the BBC , a police spokesman joked in a post on Facebook: \"Gotta catch 'em all.\" The force is now trying to reunite the cards with their rightful owners. \"An interesting warrant in #Hyde yesterday morning, supported by your Neighbourhood policing teams,\" the statement from Tameside Police read. \"Seizure of thousands of stolen, high-value Pokémon cards with an estimated worth of over £250,000. Attempts will now be made to return the cards to the original owners. One male arrested. \"Gotta catch 'Em All ?\" This isn't the first time criminals have targeted collectible trading cards. Since the rarest sold in 2022 for more than $5 million, prices have rocketed, with Tokyo police reported an unprecedented number of trading card thefts in the latter half of 2022. There's also been high profile examples in other parts of the world, including a Minnesota store reportedly having around $250,000 worth of cards stolen and a Tokyo man allegedly launching a full on heist to acquire cards . Even an Alabama policeman was allegedly fired for pocketing cards in Walmart . In September 2024, a Japanese duo stole $70,000 worth of Pokémon cards from a store in Osaka , but not before interrogating staff to ascertain which ones were the most valuable. A similar thing happened in California in early 2024 when thieves made off with 35,000 Pokémon cards . Perhaps that's why finding Pokémon cards in 2025 isn’t as easy as it should be. • "content": "PERITO MORENO GLACIER, Argentina :The deep cracking sound bursting from within the ice signals the dramatic fall about to happen. Seconds later, a block of ice some 70 meters (230 ft) tall - the size of a 20-story building - collapses from the face of the Perito Moreno glacier into the aquamarine water below. The sight has attracted visitors to Argentina's most famous glacier for years. Standing on platforms facing the ice, they wait for the next crack to split the cool Patagonian air. But recently the size of the ice chunks breaking off - a process called \"calving\" - has been starting to alarm local guides and glaciologists, already anxious at a prolonged retreat by Perito Moreno, which had bucked the trend in recent decades by maintaining its mass even as warmer climates spurred faster glacial melting worldwide. \"Ice calving events of this size haven't been very common at the Perito Moreno glacier over the past 20 years,\" said Pablo Quinteros, an official tourist guide at Los Glaciares National Park in the southern province of Santa Cruz. \"It's only in the last four to six years that we've started to see icebergs this big,\" he told Reuters during a visit in April. The face of the glacier, which flows down from Andean peaks to end in the waters of Lake Argentina, had for decades held more or less steady, some years advancing and others retreating. But in the last five years, there's been a firmer retreat. \"It had been in more or less the same position for the past 80 years. And that's unusual,\" said Argentine glaciologist Lucas Ruiz with state science body CONICET, whose research focus is the future of Patagonian glaciers in the face of climate change. \"However, since 2020, signs of retreat have begun to be seen in some parts of the Perito Moreno glacier's face.\" He said that the glacier could rebound as it has done before, but that for the moment it was losing between one and two meters of water equivalent per year, which if not reversed could lead to a situation where the loss accelerates. A state-backed 2024 report, co-authored by Ruiz and presented to Argentina's Congress, showed that while Perito Moreno's mass has been overall stable for half a century, the period since 2015 has seen the fastest and most prolonged loss of mass in 47 years, on average losing 0.85 meters per year. Glaciers around the globe are disappearing faster than ever, with the last three-year period seeing the largest glacial mass loss on record, according to a UNESCO report in March. 'YOU CAN'T GRASP THE IMMENSITY OF IT' Ruiz said instruments his research team used to monitor the glacier had shown an increase in air temperature in the area of around 0.06 degrees Celsius per decade and precipitation decreasing, meaning less accumulation of snow and ice. \"The thing with Perito Moreno is that it took a while, so to speak, to feel the effects of climate change,\" Ruiz said. Now, however, the accumulation of ice at the top of the glacier was being outpaced by melting and calving at the bottom. \"The changes we are seeing today clearly show that this balance of forces... has been disrupted, and today the glacier is losing both in thickness and area.\" For now, the glacier remains an awe-inspiring attraction for travelers, who board boats to see the calving and the huge icebergs floating around the lake up close. \"It's insane. The most incredible thing I've ever seen,\" said Brazilian tourist Giovanna Machado on the deck of one of the boats, which have to be careful of sudden ice falls. \"Even in photos, you just can't grasp the immensity of it, and it's perfect. It's amazing. I think everyone should come here at least once in their lifetime.\"",

      • "content": "(REUTERS) -Tesla last November ended an unusual policy that prohibited U.S. leasing customers from buying their cars at lease-end. The policy started in 2019, when Tesla announced that customers could lease its mass-market Model 3 sedans but would have to return them, at the end of the lease, for use in Tesla's planned \"robotaxi\" network. \"You don't have the option of buying,\" Chief Executive Elon Musk said at an investor gathering in California in April 2019. \"We want them back.\" \"Next year, for sure,\" he added, \"we'll have over 1 million robotaxis on the road.\" None of that would prove true. Despite repeated promises, the robotaxis never came. Tesla instead found an unusually lucrative way to make money by flipping many of the off-lease cars to new buyers, according to four people familiar with Tesla's retail operations. Rather than storing the used cars – a fast-depreciating asset – Tesla started adding features to them through software upgrades. It then sold the vehicles to new customers who would pay thousands more than lease-end buyers would have, the people said. The practice was an easy way to \"jack up the price\" of the used vehicles, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified. Tesla and Musk didn't respond to requests for comment for this story. Although counter to what Musk said publicly – and descriptions Tesla gave on its website regarding lease terms – the tactic appears to have been legal. Still, the practice denied lessees the industry-standard option of buying their vehicles and misled them for years about why. It also perpetuated the myth among investors that Tesla was near fully autonomous driving technology. That belief has helped buoy Tesla stock, whose value has far outpaced current earnings and made it the world's most valuable automaker. Throughout the industry, lease contracts typically allow customers to pay monthly to drive a new car for a specified period of time, often between two and four years. The lessee doesn't own the vehicle and must return it to the dealer when the lease expires. In almost all cases, customers can choose to buy the vehicle at lease-end or earlier. Since 2019, Tesla financial statements show, the company has leased to customers worldwide more than 314,000 vehicles, or 4.4 per cent of its total deliveries. It isn't clear whether the no-buy policy applied anywhere outside the United States. The policy was well suited for the years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when vehicle inventories tightened and car prices spiked. More recently, as demand has plummeted – in part because of some consumers' distaste for Musk's right-wing political activities – buyers aren't as enthusiastic for used Teslas. In making upgrades to its off-lease vehicles, the people familiar with Tesla's retail operations told Reuters, the company often added \"Full Self-Driving\" software, which it has sold separately for up to $15,000 and now sells for $8,000. It also added \"acceleration boost,\" an update that can make the car speed up faster, which it sells separately for $2,000. After starting the no-purchase policy with Model 3 leases, Tesla expanded it to leases for all models. Until the recent reversal, its web site said Tesla vehicles delivered after April 15, 2022 \"are not eligible for purchase,\" and that \"Model 3 and Model Y leases are not eligible for purchase regardless of delivery date.\" Then, last November 27, Tesla's North America account posted on X, Musk's social media platform: \"Lease buyout now available\" for new contracts. The company also updated its leasing webpage to say leased vehicles \"may be eligible for purchase.\" For some former lessees, the discovery has been disappointing. At the start and end of his three-year Model Y lease, Joe Mendenhall told Reuters, Tesla staff said they needed the car back for the robotaxi fleet. But last year he learned Tesla sold the car once he returned it. \"Lies about not being able to buy out my lease,\" the Indianapolis marketing entrepreneur wrote on X. \"The car gets sold at auction, not turned into a robotaxi like I was told. Slow clap @elonmusk.\" \"CAUGHT HOLDING THE BAG\" Tesla's story about keeping used cars for robotaxis fits a long pattern of unfulfilled promises to deploy self-driving vehicles – most recently announced for June in Austin, Texas. Every year since 2016, Musk has promised self-driving Teslas would arrive no later than the following year. In 2019, when Tesla first offered leasing for the Model 3, Musk told podcast host Lex Fridman that the ability to add autonomous-driving software would make every used Tesla an \"appreciating asset.\" Some investors have referenced the alleged inventory of leased vehicles as a promising strategy. As recently as October – ahead of a Hollywood event where Tesla displayed a concept \"Cybercab\" robotaxi – Ark Investment Management, long bullish on Tesla stock, said the off-lease inventory could help quickly ramp-up an autonomous ride-hailing service. \"To jumpstart the service, it could deploy a fleet of existing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, including those coming off lease,\" Ark said in a research note at the time. Sam Korus, a director of research at Ark, this week said that Tesla, even without the off-lease cars, could still have other options, including new or third-party vehicles. Others have long had doubts. When Tesla in 2019 announced it was prohibiting lease purchases because of its robotaxi plans, Evercore ISI analysts reacted in a research note: \"uhmmm, what??\" The announcement \"is an indication that Tesla believes their ride-hailing network is going to be a viable business in three years,\" the analysts added. \"Put us in the extremely skeptical camp.\" As a rule, auto dealers avoid holding used inventory because used cars generally depreciate rapidly. Michael Minick, a former Tesla sales representative and one of the people familiar with the sale of formerly leased cars, told Reuters the company wouldn't allow cars to \"just sit on lots and lose value.\" \"I knew that wasn't true,\" added Minick, who was among thousands of Tesla employees laid off during a restructuring last year. For most car companies, offering lease buyouts is a \"no-brainer\" because dealers don't have to find a new buyer when a lease ends, said Joseph Yoon, consumer insights analyst at automotive data provider Edmunds. Now that used Tesla values are \"kind of tanking,\" Yoon said, the company most likely ended the lease-end-purchase ban to avoid being \"caught holding the bag.\" As Tesla models age and face rising competition from other electric vehicle makers, the cars now lose value faster than almost any other vehicle. An analysis by CarGurus, a used-car sales and data service, found average selling prices of used Teslas have fallen 7.6 per cent over the last year, compared to a decline of 0.8 per cent for a composite index of all brands. Prices for Tesla's Cybertruck have plunged 46 per cent over the last year, while Model Y prices fell 14.1 per cent. During Tesla's January earnings call, Vaibhav Taneja, the company's chief financial officer, blamed \"lower profit from used car business\" as a reason for declining margins at one of its units. Unlike almost all other automakers with U.S. sales, Tesla owns and operates its own dealerships. At dealerships before the lease policy changed, one of the people familiar with Tesla's retail operations said, customers sometimes asked why used prices were so similar to those of some new models. Salespeople would cite the software upgrades to those interested in buying. For those seeking leases, they continued saying the cars would be used for robotaxis at lease-end. The explanation never changed, the person added, because until November the company never deviated from it. Marshall Distel, a transportation planner from Vermont who leased a Model 3 in 2023, said he understood from researching Tesla's policies that he would have to return the car. At the time, he said, he thought a buyout option would have been nice. Now, he has no interest in buying anything from Musk, whose high-profile activities as an advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump have alienated some consumers. \"I love the car, I just don't like what has been going on at the top with the CEO,\" Distel said. \"I don't want to be associated with that any more.\" (Edited by Brian Thevenot and Paulo Prada.)",

      • "content": "Chelsea will have to find an alternative solution in attack at home to Manchester United in the Premier League on Friday with Nicolas Jackson suspended and Christopher Nkunku still sidelined with an injury, manager Enzo Maresca said on Thursday. Senegal international Jackson was sent off in Chelsea's 2-0 loss at Newcastle United last weekend, while Frenchman Nkunku has not featured in their last six games. \"We are working on that (filling the forward role). We don't have many options,\" Maresca told reporters. \"Unfortunately, Marc Guiu is still injured. He has started to train with us but he's not ready to play from the start and we're working on different options for Friday night.\" Jackson was sent off for serious foul play following a VAR review after he elbowed Dan Burn in the face. Although Maresca said he had not spoken to Jackson immediately after the game, the Italian believes the 23-year-old will learn from the experience. \"Nico is intelligent enough to recognise there has been an error. There has been a mistake. That's all I have to say about that,\" Maresca added. With two games to go, Chelsea occupy the fifth Champions League spot with 63 points - the same as sixth-placed Aston Villa but with a superior goal difference. Asked if he would have been happy at the start of the season to be two wins from qualifying for the Champions League, Maresca said: \"Absolutely. Probably we would have been happy. \"We had moments, for instance in the first five or six months, where we were second and third, so even better. Now we are there and we are going to try to finish well. \"I said many times already that we have had a good season. That can become a very good season if we are able to finish (in the) top five and also if we are able to win the Conference League.\" Chelsea play Real Betis in the Conference League final on May 28 and, although the club have a reputation for winning bigger things and regularly qualifying for the Champions League, Maresca offered some perspective on the London side. \"It's different. In the last two years, (Chelsea finished) 12th and sixth. This is not a title. So it's not about (what Chelsea achieved) 10 years ago or 15 years ago,\" he said. \"We said since day one that we have the duty to bring this club where it has to be - that is top four, top five this season, Champions League. \"The players are aware, the coaching staff are aware, the club is aware and hopefully we can finish the season there.\"",

      • "content": "Helldivers 2 developers Arrowhead has addressed player concern that it might leave the game behind to focus on its next project, dubbed \"Game 6.\" As spotted by VG247 , CEO Shams Jorjani spoke to fans in the official Helldivers Discord following the explosive launch of the full-scale Illuminate invasion this week . “The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you,” Jorjani said. That seemingly innocuous quote sparked concern from one fan who said it suggested Arrowhead was “already abandoning a good chunk of dev time and money from Helldivers 2.” So, how long does Jorjani expect content updates for Helldivers 2 to last? \"As long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits we can keep it going,\" Jorjani said, pointing to Helldivers 2's virtual currency that's used to buy Premium Warbonds. \"Last summer we were kinda screwing the pooch so it looked like we wouldn't be able to keep the train going for a long time - but we turned the ship around, you support us a lot so it's looking bright.\" And here’s an interesting follow-up comment from Jorjani, in response to one fan who called on Arrowhead to make its next game available in all regions and avoid the region-locking purchase debacle the Sony-published Helldivers 2 has suffered from: \"The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we'll call 100% of those shots.\" That suggests Arrowhead isn't going with Sony or any other company for its next game, which in turn suggests it's not Helldivers 3. Speaking of Game 6 and how its development will (hopefully) differ from the \"rough\", eight-year slog that was Helldivers 2, Jorjani said Arrowhead wants to nail the \"core s**t\" early on before moving on to making the rest of the game this time around. \"For the most part of the development cycle games plain suck,\" Jorjani explained. \"Very seldom are they truly fun from the get-go. And for Helldivers taking eight years to make it was rough for the longest time. But it came together in the end. The ONLY way to know is to playtest playtest playtest. \"For our next game we're doing things in a much smarter way and nailing a lot of the core s**t early on (as you should) then make the rest.\" All this tallies with previous comments from Arrowhead developers, who’ve said they want Helldivers 2 to last for years to come. Let’s remember, Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time , with an astonishing 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. It is a record no first-party Sony-developed game will likely ever beat. But so much has happened since that initial explosive release: a dramatic U-turn on PSN account requirements on Steam, review-bomb campaigns, and a community often at war with Helldivers 2 itself as nerfs and buffs either go too far or not far enough. So you'd be forgiven for wondering whether enthusiasm for Helldivers 2 at Arrowhead might have waned. But Alex Bolle, production director on Helldivers 2, recently told IGN “we want it to be around for years and years and years to come.” “How do we stay true to the Helldivers 2 fantasy, challenging enough that we keep making amazing new features and new systems and all that while we stay true to who we are? And I think it's something that is so motivating for the years to come. “The more we figure out how to thrive in a live environment, and we still have a way to go to figure out a lot of things around that, the more we can let creativity loose on new systems that we would've never thought about a year ago when we released. I've worked on live games before and it's where you feel like you have something you can figure out: what if I would do this cool thing I've seen in other games and adapt it to our sauce, that still makes it true to ourselves? I'm looking forward to this moment.” To that end, recent leaks (one from PlayStation itself) point to the imminent release of Super Earth as a playable map , as the Illuminate eventually make it to our home planet. • "content": "US President Donald Trump’s visit to Arab states in the Middle East this week generated plenty of multibillion-dollar deals. He said more than US$1 trillion worth of deals had been signed with Saudi Arabia alone, though the is likely much lower. Qatar also placed an , a deal worth a reported $96 billion. Trump will no doubt present these transactions as a major success for US industry. The trip also helped counter concerns about US disengagement from the Middle East. For more than a decade, local elites have viewed Washington’s attention as shifting away from the region. This trip was a reaffirmation of the importance of the Middle East – in particular the Gulf region – to US foreign policy. This is an important signal to send to Middle Eastern leaders who are dealing with competing interests from China and, to a lesser extent, Russia. And from a political standpoint, Trump’s lifting of sanctions on Syria and meeting with the former rebel, now president, Ahmed al-Sharaa was very significant – both symbolically and practically. Until recently, al-Sharaa was listed by the United States as a terrorist with a on his head. However, when his forces removed dictator Bashar al-Assad from power in December, he was cautiously welcomed by many in the international community. The US had invested considerable resources in removing Assad from power, so his fall was cause for celebration, even if it came at the hands of forces the US had deemed terrorists. This rapid turnaround is dizzying. In practice, the removal of sanctions on Syria opens the doors to foreign investment in the reconstruction of the country following a long civil war. It also offers an opportunity for Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as well as Turkey, to expand their influence in Syria at the expense of Iran. For a leader who styles himself a deal-maker, these can all be considered successful outcomes from a three-day trip. However, Trump avoided wading into the far more delicate diplomatic and political negotiations needed to end Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza and find common ground with Iran on its nuclear program. No solution in sight for the Palestinians Trump skirted the ongoing tragedy in Gaza and offered no plans for a diplomatic solution to the war, which drags on with no end in sight. The president did to see a normalization of relations between Arab states and Israel, without acknowledging the key stumbling block. While Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates have no love for Hamas, the Gaza war and the misery inflicted on the Palestinians have made it impossible for them to overlook the issue. They cannot simply leapfrog Gaza to normalize relations with Israel. In his first term, Trump hoped the Palestinian issue could be pushed aside to achieve normalisation of relations between Arab states and Israel. This was partially achieved with the , which saw the UAE and three other Muslim-majority nations normalize relations with Israel. Trump no doubt believed the Israel-Hamas ceasefire just before his inauguration would stick – he promised as much during the US election campaign. But after Israel in March, vowing to press on with its indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, he’s learned the hard way that the Palestinian question cannot easily be solved or brushed under the carpet. The Palestinian aspiration for statehood needs to be addressed as an indispensable step towards a lasting peace and regional stability. It was telling that Trump did not stop in Israel this week. One former Israeli diplomat it’s a sign Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lost his leverage with Trump. More harsh rhetoric for Iran Trump also had no new details or initiatives to announce on the Iran nuclear talks, beyond his desire to “ ” and his repeat of past threats. At least four rounds of talks have been held between Iran and the United States since early April. While both sides are positive about the prospects, the US administration seems divided on the intended outcome. The US Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have called for the complete dismantling of Iran’s capacity to as a sure safeguard against the potential weaponization of the nuclear program. Trump himself, however, has been less categorical. Though he has called for the “ ” of Iran’s nuclear program, he has he’s undecided if Iran should be allowed to continue a civilian enrichment program. Iran’s capacity to enrich uranium, albeit under international monitoring, is a red line for the authorities in Tehran – they won’t give this up. The gap between Iran and the US appears to have widened this week following on Iran as the “most destructive force” in the Middle East. The Iranian foreign minister, called Trump’s remarks “pure deception”, and pointed to US support for Israel as the source of instability in the region. None of this has advanced the prospects of a nuclear deal. And though his visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE was marked by pomp and ceremony, he’ll leave no closer to solving two protracted challenges than when he arrived.",

      • "content": "Napoli aim to defend a one-point lead atop Serie A with Inter Milan poised to pounce, while the fight for the final Champions League spot and the relegation battle reach boiling point on what promises to be a dramatic penultimate matchday. There is a chance the Scudetto could be decided by a playoff, if the top two finish level on points, but Napoli have their fate in their hands and could secure the title on Sunday with a win if Inter lose at home to fifth-placed Lazio. Napoli slipped up last weekend in a 2-2 draw at home to Genoa, allowing Inter to move closer, and Antonio Conte's side travel to Parma who are 16th and still not safe from the drop. Conte will be without midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, who limped off early against Genoa, already struggling with an ankle injury, but there was some good news for Napoli. Winger David Neres came on late versus Genoa while defender Alessandro Buongiorno is likely to be among the substitutes for the Parma match having missed the last two games. Napoli are undefeated in 10 matches, but dropping points last time out means Conte's men cannot afford any more missteps, as Inter, with a Champions League final to look forward to, have found an extra gear at just the right time. Inter lost top spot with two successive defeats, but Simone Inzaghi's rotation has worked wonders in the last two games with his side taking maximum points to give themselves a fighting chance of retaining their league title. Davide Frattesi, Lautaro Martinez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Benjamin Pavard are unlikely to return for the Lazio game, but Inzaghi may restore the likes of goalkeeper Yann Sommer, Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella to the lineup. Lazio are in the hunt for a Champions League place, level on 64 points with Juventus who have the all-important fourth spot. Juve are home to Udinese, with a host of teams waiting to take advantage of any slip-up. AS Roma are one point behind and host AC Milan who are in eighth place on 60 points. Nine games kick off simultaneously on Sunday. The only fixture with nothing riding on it is Atalanta's trip to Genoa on Saturday, with the hosts safe in mid-table and the visitors already guaranteed third spot and a Champions League place. Bologna, fresh from lifting the Coppa Italia by beating Milan on Wednesday, are seventh in the standings, two points off Juve, and visit Fiorentina, who are ninth on 59 points Monza are already relegated, but may well play a role in deciding who joins them in Serie B as they welcome second from bottom Empoli, level on 28 points with Lecce, who host Torino. Venezia's win over Fiorentina on Monday moved them one place and one point above the drop zone and they visit Cagliari, 14th in the standings on 33 points and not mathematically safe yet.",

      • "content": "SINGAPORE: Overseas votes in the recent General Election, which were counted by the Elections Department Singapore (ELD) on Thursday (May 15), largely reflected local voting patterns. In a statement, ELD said that there were 17,237 registered overseas voters in all contested electoral divisions. This excludes those with registered Singapore NRIC addresses or local contact addresses within Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, which went uncontested due to a walkover . ELD said that 5,966 out of 8,091 voters who had registered to vote in-person cast their votes at one of the 10 overseas polling stations. It added that 7,808 out of 9,146 postal voters downloaded the postal ballots. Of this figure, 6,097 of which were received in Singapore by the deadline stipulated and 3,363 were accepted for counting. Adding to the votes cast in Singapore on Polling Day on May 3, the total number of votes cast in GE2025 is 2,438,610. This figure includes 42,945 rejected votes. The overseas votes largely reflected local voting patterns, except in Sembawang West SMC, where Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan garnered 23 valid votes, as compared to the People's Action Party's (PAP) Poh Li San with 21. Ms Poh secured 53.18 per cent of the votes to beat Dr Chee. In Bukit Panjang SMC, where PAP's Liang Eng Hwa beat SDP chair Paul Tambyah with 61.38 per cent of the vote, both candidates received the same number of overseas votes - 36. The Workers' Party received more valid overseas votes than the PAP in Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC and Hougang SMC, which they retained. They ended the 2025 polls as the only opposition party to be elected to parliament . The ruling PAP's largest winning margins were in Queenstown SMC and Tanjong Pagar GRC, with 81.13 per cent and 81.02 per cent of the vote, respectively. Following the counting of overseas votes, 92.83 per cent of all registered electors voted in GE2025, ELD added. The lower voter turnout at GE2025 may have been driven by the timing of the polls and the perceived quality of opposition party candidates in some constituencies, said political observers.",

      • "content": "Valve has dismissed recent reports its Steam platform suffered a \"major\" data hack, confirming there was \"NOT a breach\" of Steam systems. In a statement posted to Steam, Valve said that after examining the leak sample, it has determined customer data has not been compromised, saying: \"The leak consisted of older text messages that included one-time codes that were only valid for 15-minute time frames and the phone numbers they were sent to. The leaked data did not associate the phone numbers with a Steam account, password information, payment information or other personal data.\" \"Old text messages cannot be used to breach the security of your Steam account, and whenever a code is used to change your Steam email or password using SMS, you will receive a confirmation via email and/or Steam secure messages,\" the company added. Valve did, however, take the opportunity to remind players to set up the Steam Mobile Authenticator to provide 2-factor security as it is \"the best way to send secure messages about your account and your account's safety.\" Given the prolific rise in data breaches and the fact that over 89 million of us have a Steam account, users had good reason to be worried about a possible security compromise. The most infamous video game-related data breach occurred in 2011 when PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable networks suffered a severe outage lasting nearly a month, with 77 million accounts compromised as a result of the hack. And it's not just customer data that's at risk. Just last October, Pokémon developer Game Freak suffered a significant hack where data about its former and current staff was leaked, as well as its development pipeline. One year previous in 2023, Sony also confirmed data of nearly 7,000 of its current and former employees had been compromised in two breaches that year, and in December 2023, hackers breached confidential data at Marvel's Spider-Man developer, Insomniac . • "content": "SAN FRANCISCO :A group that opposed OpenAI's restructuring wrote in a letter this week that the startup's new organizational plan still does not go far enough to safeguard the ChatGPT creator from generating dangerous artificial intelligence technology. In the letter dated May 12, submitted to the California and Delaware attorneys-general, members of the 'Not For Private Gain' group argued that while OpenAI's announcement earlier this month to dial back some of its restructuring \"might be a step in the right direction,\" it still does not adequately prevent OpenAI from straying from its original mission to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed for the benefit of humanity. The larger group, comprising former OpenAI employees and AI experts such as Geoffrey Hinton, had written an initial letter in April opposing OpenAI's then plan to restructure to remove control from its nonprofit parent entity. The letter was part of a firestorm of criticism and legal challenges, including a high-profile lawsuit filed by rival and co-founder Elon Musk, that prompted OpenAI to dial back its restructuring plan. OpenAI, in which Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion, now plans to convert its for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation (PBC), with the nonprofit parent controlling the PBC and becoming a \"big shareholder\" in it, which it says will allow OpenAI to raise more capital to keep pace in the expensive AI race. A PBC is a structure designed to balance shareholder returns with social goals, unlike nonprofits, which are solely focused on public good. But Monday's letter says OpenAI's new plan significantly diminishes the nonprofit's existing authority. First, OpenAI's current for-profit entity is required to advance its mission and charter above any investor interests, while the proposed PBC is not required to do so, it said. Second, OpenAI's nonprofit, as the sole manager, has 100 per cent control over its for-profit entity today, granting it day-to-day operational power such as the ability to fire executives. In the proposed restructuring, the nonprofit would not have comprehensive control over the PBC, which the group said is concerning because the attorneys-general's enforcement powers are derived solely from the nonprofit's authority.",

      • "content": "DOHA: United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday (May 15) he could still travel to Turkey for the first direct Russia-Ukraine talks aimed at ending their more than three-year war if progress is made. \"You know, if something happened, I'd go on Friday if it was appropriate,\" Trump said in Qatar. \"We can help the world psychologically. So we think we're going to do well with Russia/Ukraine,\" he said. Trump said a day earlier that he would go to Turkey for the talks if Russian President Vladimir Putin showed up. Russia, instead, is sending a more junior delegation, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy daring Putin to come to prove he is serious about peace. Trump said he was not surprised that Putin was absent , saying: \"Why would he go if I'm not going?\" Trump, on taking office, had promised to end the war immediately, but Russia snubbed a US proposal backed by Ukraine for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Despite improving relations between Ukraine and the US administration, Trump again in Qatar spoke dismissively of Zelenskyy, who worked closely with former US President Joe Biden to secure billions of dollars in military aid. \"I think he's the greatest salesman maybe in history,\" Trump said of Zelenskyy, who had a tense showdown with Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the White House on Feb 28. Trump noted how his administration has slashed military aid to Ukraine and said: \"That was so easy, like taking candy from a baby.\" The US president is on a three-nation Gulf tour that will also take him to the United Arab Emirates later on Thursday. Trump said the trip made it \"very tough\" to travel to Turkey but noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had gone to the country. \"He's doing a fantastic job. Marco's there,\" he said.",

      • "content": "JOHOR BAHRU: A 27-year-old Singaporean man charged with causing a fatal accident in Johor last week has pleaded not guilty. Muhammad Irshad Abdul Hameed claimed trial after the charge was read to him by the court interpreter before Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid on Thursday (May 15). Civil servant Irshad was accused of driving his Singapore-registered red Maserati dangerously and allegedly causing the death of a 32-year-old motorcyclist at the 0.6km mark of the expressway on May 9, local news outlet Berita Harian reported. He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which carries a maximum penalty of a 10-year jail term and a fine of up to RM50,000 (US$11,661). If convicted, he could also lose his eligibility to hold or obtain a driving licence for at least five years from the date of conviction. The New Straits Times (NST) reported that the Singaporean driver had allegedly made an illegal U-turn and crashed into the central divider at the expressway at about 6.40pm on May 9. Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan earlier confirmed that 32-year-old A Vasanthraj was pronounced dead at the scene from severe injuries to his head and left leg, according to Free Malaysia Today (FMT). Kumarasan added that Irshad had crashed into the barrier, ripping it out and placing his car in the way of oncoming traffic. The motorcyclist who was travelling from the other direction was unable to avoid the barrier and was flung onto the shoulder of the road, the police chief added. At the Johor Bahru Magistrates Court on Thursday, the prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Amirah Tasnim Saleh while Irshad was represented by lawyers Baharudin Baharim and Zarina Ismail Tom. The court has set bail at RM12,000 with two Malaysian sureties and ordered Irshad to report to a nearby police station once a month as well as having his driving licence suspended. Earlier, the prosecution had proposed a bail amount of RM20,000 and requested that he surrender his passport to the court, as well as the required monthly police station visits. Malay Mail reported that Irshad’s lawyer Baharudin then requested a reasonable bail amount for his client, who is caring for a mother with cancer and has a younger brother still in school. His lawyer also requested an exemption from surrendering his Singapore passport to the court as Irshad would need it to carry out his duties as a civil servant. His other lawyer Zarina added that Irshad has no criminal record, is not a flight risk and is willing to cooperate by reporting to a police station in Johor every month. CNA has reached out to Singapore's Public Service Division (PSD) for comment. The court has set Jun 10 for the re-mention of the case and the submission of documents. Dashcam footage of the accident has gone viral online, with one clip showing a motorcyclist hitting what appears to be a dislodged part of the central divider, and other motorcyclists also falling after being hit by debris. Other clips of the aftermath of the incident show a crowd of people surrounding the Maserati. Some were seen hitting the car with helmets and later shouting at a man. Kumarasan, the police chief, told NST that in the aftermath of the crash, several furious road users had allegedly assaulted the Maserati driver and hit him with a helmet before police arrived at the scene.",
