      • "content": "Unlimited ride ticket has lost all the charm that made it so great. Japan Railways Group has a number of special rail passes to make train travel cheaper, easier, and by extension, more fun, but one of the most popular, the Seishun 18 Ticket , underwent a number of changes to its terms and conditions recently that made it fall out of favour with travellers. While the availability periods haven’t changed — the ticket still coincides with school holiday periods and can be used in spring , from 1 March to 10 April, summer , from 20 July to 10 September, and winter , from 10 December to 10 January — the way it can be used has changed significantly. Previously, the ticket, which gives you unlimited rides on local and rapid JR trains and BRT highway buses across Japan, with some ferries included, could be used over any five days within each seasonal period, but now, the ticket can only be used over five consecutive days . One of the big draws of the ticket was the freedom to use it at your lesiure during the season , so restricting people to five consecutive days of travel takes a lot of the shine off the pass. The word “ seishun ” translates to “ youth “, and although there are no age restrictions for the pass, its a word that evokes a sense of youthful adventure and unbridled freedom , and these new restrictions put a dampener on that. Previously, Masanuki liked to use the pass to explore new routes and destinations on weekends, but like many full-time workers he doesn’t have the luxury of taking five days off so it’s now of little use to him. While there is an argument to be made that the new restrictions still allow the country’s actual youth to take advantage of the pass during school holidays, with so many working adults using the pass, sales are likely to take a big nosedive. Then there’s another big change — whereas the pass could previously be used by more than one person, with each person counted as a day of free travel out of the five days, now, only the sole owner of the ticket can use it as it’s non-transferable . According to the previous terms, two people could enjoy a round-trip journey to a far-off destination between them, which would count as four days of the ticket, and still have a day of unlimited travel for one left over. The two people travelling could be a young couple on a tight budget or a parent and child on a bonding trip, giving a wider segment of society better access to cheap travel , but now these travellers will have to either spend more by purchasing two passes or be forced to rethink their options. Or, perhaps more likely, not travel at all. To lessen the impact of this inconvenience, Japan Rail has introduced a new three-day pass as part of the new changes, so customers can now choose between five days of travel for the unchanged price of 12,050 yen (US$80), or three days for 10,000 yen. However, that doesn’t really help things from Masanuki’s point of view, as that still means most travellers with either have to take a day off work to use the three-day pass, or use it on a long weekend, when the trains are already more crowded than usual. ▼ The new three-day pass option... ▼ ...and the five-day pass, alongside an option to add a one-way trip on the Hokkaido Shinkansen for an additional 4,500 yen. The new terms themselves are an inconvenience, as there’s quite a bit to get your head around. This sign outlines the changes mentioned above, as well as the fact that the three-day pass cannot be changed into a five-day one, and, most importantly... ▼ ...you can now insert the ticket into the turnstiles. Previously, ticket holders had to present the ticket to staff at the turnstiles, where they would receive a stamp and be allowed through. Now, that system has stopped, and though Japan Rail says this will alleviate congestion at the gates and free up staff for other duties, passengers are lamenting another loss presented by this change. Previously, the stamps, as seen above, acted as mementos of a journey, giving you a physical reminder of where you went and when, but now, the ticket remains bland, lifeless and devoid of character. ▼ The price you pay for convenience. Seeing a stamp for Tokyo Station and then Kokura in Fukuoka right next to it is not only a pretty sight on a non-Shinkansen rail ticket but a source of pride as the 19-hour-and-nine minute journey is an epic one . While some people say they appreciate the convenience of being able to move swiftly through the gates, others don’t see it as a major benefit, saying it doesn’t outweigh the cons. Previously, we could’ve spent a week in Fukuoka before moving on to our next destination, essentially stretching out the trip to stay in several major sites over the five-week validity period of the ticket. However, that style of slow travel is no longer an option, as the ticket has to be used in either three or five consecutive days, depending on the pass you purchase. ▼ Goodbye, sense of youthful, unbridled adventure. In fact, thousands of people have signed petitions since the changes came into effect in winter 2024, calling for a return to the previous pass’ terms and conditions. However, while this won’t appear to affect any change right now, we have our fingers crossed that the inevitable dip in sales might cause the rail operators to rethink the system, so we can use the pass to travel from Tokyo to Tohoku on the cheap again , and even go as far as Korea by ferry . • "content": "WASHINGTON: The Trump administration said on Thursday (Mar 27) it will provide US$73 million in new financial aid to Rohingya refugees through the United Nations World Food Programme, amid concerns that aid cuts could deepen the crisis for the world's largest stateless population. \"This food and nutrition support through @WFP will provide critically needed food and nutrition assistance for more than one million people,\" US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a post on X. \"It is important that our international partners engage with sharing the burden with life-saving assistance such as this.\" The infusion comes as US President Donald Trump and his administration have made sweeping cuts to foreign assistance as part of his \"America First\" agenda and wider efforts to drastically cut federal spending and dismantle parts of the US government. Two UN agencies had warned that a funding deficit would curb rations for the Rohingya in Bangladesh who have fled violence in neighboring Myanmar for the past eight years. Refugees have worried that cuts would worsen hunger , curtail critical healthcare and fuel crime. Washington had been the largest provider of aid to the Rohingya refugees, contributing nearly US$2.4 billion since 2017, according to the State Department. But the recent freeze on funds after Trump took office in January has forced at least five hospitals to reduce services. Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk have moved to shutter USAID, the main US foreign aid agency, and merge its remnants into the State Department, fired hundreds of staff and contractors and terminated billions of dollars in services on which tens of millions of people around the world depend. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in February granted a waiver for all life-saving assistance and reasonable administrative costs as necessary to deliver such aid. The Trump administration official overseeing the dismantling of USAID had proposed phasing out help for the Rohingya, Reuters reported earlier this month.",

      • "content": "The chief of Myanmar's ruling junta vowed on Thursday (Mar 27) to hold a free and fair election in December, as he urged armed opponents in a widening civil war to renounce violence and pursue dialogue. Min Aung Hlaing during a speech at the country's annual armed forces day parade said the military was seeking to hold a \"dignified\" election and promised to transfer power to the winning party. He told hundreds of soldiers assembled at the sprawling parade ground in the capital Naypyidaw that they must support a free and fair, multi-party vote. \"The necessary preparations are underway for the election,\" he said. \"We are working ... to hold the election people desire, which is a free and fair and multi-party democratic election.\" \"We will transfer power to the winning party,\" he added. Despite being locked in a civil war, the economy in tatters and dozens of political parties banned or refusing to take part, the military is determined to forge ahead with an election, which critics have derided as a sham to keep the generals in power through proxies. Since overthrowing the elected civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, the military has struggled to run the country and fend off a rebellion that has its roots in a youth-led uprising, which the army suppressed with lethal force. Min Aung Hlaing had earlier this month said the election would take place either in December this year, or January 2026 , providing a timeframe for the first time during a visit to Belarus. The junta conducted a census last year as part of preparations to create a voter list, for which it said a full on-ground survey was compiled in only 145 of Myanmar's 330 townships. It says 53 parties have signed up to contest the election. Opponents of the military government have said they would disrupt the vote and have asked other countries not to recognise the outcome, saying it will be held against the will of the people. Min Aung Hlaing said the military was fighting a \"just war\" against rebels bent on destroying the country, urging them to give up their armed campaign and pursue political solutions through dialogue. Some analysts say the holding of the ballot could trigger even more violence and Myanmar's neighbours in the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN have told the junta to prioritise peace over an election. Fighting has displaced more than three million people in Myanmar, with widespread food insecurity and over a third of the population in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations.",

      • "content": "SEOUL/TOKYO : For Japan and South Korea, tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump represent a blow to domestic car industries that are both economic pillars and sources of national pride. Shares in companies such as Japan's Toyota and Honda and South Korea's Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp fell, wiping off some $16.5 billion in value, after Trump on Wednesday unveiled a 25 per cent tariff on imported cars and light trucks to take effect on April 3. On the streets of Tokyo and Seoul, and in \"motor city\" Gwangju, people were concerned the levies would have a far-reaching impact, speaking to the singular role the car industry has played in the post-war economic rise of the two U.S. allies. While car production helped transform Germany, Italy and France after World War Two, its influence in Asia has been even more profound. Automakers form the nucleus of vast networks of group companies that impact almost every facet of working life in the two countries. In Japan, where the industry accounts for roughly 3 per cent of gross domestic product, it is the automakers - particularly Toyota - that set the precedent for national wage increases through annual talks between unions and management. The auto supply chain totalled around 60,000 companies as of May last year, according to research firm Teikoku Databank. The industry is broadly responsible for the employment of more than 5 million people, or 8 per cent of the entire workforce, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. South Korea's car industry is its biggest employer, and cars and automotive parts account for 14 per cent of exports. About half go to the United States. \"The auto industry is the first thing that comes to mind for most people when you mention manufacturing,\" said Hiroshi Kojima, a 56-year-old businessman at a materials company who spoke to Reuters in central Tokyo. \"I am worried this could have a big impact on the economy and hit production of Japan's manufacturers.\" UNCERTAINTY IN MOTOR CITY In Gwangju, South Korea, home to the factories that export Kia's Sportage, Soul and Seltos crossovers to the United States, \"we are concerned about production volume and jobs,\" said a worker at a Kia supplier, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He told Reuters his factory planned to keep staffing Saturday shifts in April, but that demand looked uncertain. U.S. automaker General Motors has factories in South Korea that export more than 80 per cent of vehicles produced, including Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer crossovers to the United States. They are likely to be hit harder than plants of South Korean rivals, which produce more cars for the domestic market. \"We are nervous,\" one union worker told Reuters, also speaking on condition of anonymity. He said management previously told the union that 2025 production would be in line with last year, and has not so far updated its targets. \"We are very concerned about the absence of the South Korean president who can address tariff issues. This is not something that we can control,\" the worker said, referring to the political turmoil that started in December when now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol briefly declared martial law. South Korea's industry minister Ahn Duk-geun met with executives from automakers and suppliers on Thursday and expressed concern about the impact of tariffs, especially for auto parts makers. He promised measures by April to minimise the impact, including boosting domestic investments and demand. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Tokyo would put \"all options on the table\" and noted that Japan is the top source of foreign investment into the United States, something the government has been stressing to Washington. In 2023 Japan exported 4.4 million vehicles, including trucks and buses, with one-third going to the United States. The tariffs hit a key part of most global automakers' supply chains - Mexico, where for years they have built up lower-cost production bases. Mexico is the top vehicle exporter to the United States, accounting for 2.5 million light vehicles in 2023, according to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association. Nissan took a 10 per cent share of that, the largest among Asian carmakers but less than General Motors, Stellantis and Ford. JOB WORRIES For 57-year-old waitress Etsuko Fukada, the tariffs highlighted the difficult dynamics of Japan's relationship with the United States. She said Tokyo was unlikely to speak out because of its reliance on Washington for its military defence. The auto industry has become even more important as Japan's influence in other areas - such as consumer electronics and microchips - has waned in recent years. Automakers are still seen as top destinations for new graduates and competition for white-collar jobs can be fierce. Mayu Morikawa, a 24-year-old graduate student looking for work, said the tariffs made her fear for her own prospects and those of a friend who had just started at work at a carmaker. In South Korea, Hyun Sang-jin said the tariffs could threaten many people's quality of life, given Hyundai's pivotal role in the country. \"I think this will lead to a big drop in jobs,\" the Seoul resident said.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK :The dollar was mixed on Thursday as traders mulled how severe tariffs scheduled to be revealed by U.S. President Donald Trump next week are likely to be, while the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso weakened after Trump announced auto trade levies. Rising optimism that Trump will be flexible in determining tariffs boosted risk sentiment and the greenback earlier this week, but traders remain nervous ahead of his planned April 2 announcement on reciprocal tariffs. “The pendulum that seems to be swinging right now for markets is initially having a knee-jerk reaction to the worst possible kind of expression of whatever's announced, and then slowly digesting the fact that it might not be as bad as feared and it might not even be as announced because it's part of a broader negotiation,” said Eric Theoret, FX strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto. Trump on Wednesday placed a 25 per cent tariff on imported cars and light trucks due to take effect next week and governments from Ottawa to Paris threatened retaliation. The Mexican peso weakened 1.04 per cent to 20.337 per U.S. dollar. The Canadian dollar fell 0.31 per cent to C$1.43 per dollar. The U.S. imported $474 billion of automotive products in 2024, including passenger cars worth $220 billion. Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany were the biggest suppliers. The euro, meanwhile, was stronger on the day and is on track to end a bearish streak of six consecutive days of losses against the dollar. It was last up 0.25 per cent at $1.0779, after earlier dropping to a three-week low of $1.0731. The single currency bounced earlier this month as German government debt yields surged on German plans to increase spending and overhaul borrowing limits. The euro has retraced some of that gain in the past week. Central banks including the European Central Bank are also signalling that they are less likely to cut rates in the near term as they gauge the economic impact of tariffs, which could hurt growth but also increase inflation. “The ECB is getting a little more forceful in terms of wanting to move to a pause. I think they're starting to communicate that they're done with easing for now in the absence of major developments,” said Theoret. A trade war with the United States could have a fleeting impact on euro zone inflation but a far more detrimental effect on economic growth, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos said on Thursday. The dollar gained 0.17 per cent to 150.83 Japanese yen and earlier reached a three-week high of 151.09 as benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields also reached a one-month high of 4.40 per cent. There was little reaction to U.S. data on Thursday showing that the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits slipped last week. Sterling strengthened 0.32 per cent to $1.2926, recovering from the previous session's fall as traders weighed the spring statement from Finance Minister Rachel Reeves. Reeves said on Thursday that Britain was working to secure an exemption from U.S. auto tariffs and could review subsidies offered to Tesla, owned by top Trump adviser Elon Musk, to better support its industry. Elsewhere, the Norwegian crown strengthened against the dollar after the central bank kept interest rates on hold on Thursday, as an unexpected resurgence of inflation led policymakers to postpone their previously stated plan for a cut. The U.S. currency fell 0.21 per cent at 10.508 crown. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin dropped 0.90 per cent to $86,487.",

Graphic: X. Zhang/G.

      • "content": "BRUSSELS: Washington has told the European Union it should not expect any trade negotiations before the United States has imposed more tariffs on the bloc next week, EU diplomats said on Thursday (Mar 27). US President Donald Trump's administration has already imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports , plans an additional 25 per cent duty on car imports and intends to announce reciprocal tariffs next Wednesday aimed at the countries he says are responsible for the bulk of the US goods trade deficit. European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic met US counterparts in Washington this week and EU envoys said Commission officials briefed them on the visit late on Wednesday. The Commission has tried to launch negotiations to avert additional tariffs, but Washington's message was that no negotiations would happen until further US tariffs are imposed, the envoys said. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the reciprocal tariffs might be as high as 25 per cent, but the level was still not certain. \"It's just a guess,\" one of the sources said. Washington has five sectors it wants to boost domestically: autos, pharmaceuticals, timber, semiconductors and metals. In Europe, Washington has been closely eyeing competition in autos and pharmaceuticals. US President Donald Trump said on Monday he will announce tariffs on automobiles, aluminium and pharmaceuticals in the very near future. The European Commission has proposed counter-measures on up to US$28 billion of US imports as a response to Trump's metals tariffs. These are likely to be imposed in mid-April. One diplomat said the Commission would present its final counter-measures on Apr 4. The Commission said on Thursday it was preparing its response to the new car import duties, but did not provide any timing. \"But I can assure you that it will be timely, that it will be robust, that it will be well calibrated and that it will achieve the intended impact\", a spokesperson said.",

      • "content": "American figure skater Ilia Malinin was not even born when France's Surya Bonaly thumbed her nose at the International Skating Union's restrictive rules by famously performing a banned backflip at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The 20-year-old Malinin and Bonaly's compatriot Adam Siao Him Fa are expected to back-flip into the history books this week as the first skaters in nearly 50 years to land the back somersault - legally - at a world championship. Malinin, a huge favourite to retain his world men's singles title this week in Boston, became the first to land the high-flying manoeuvre legally in competition since Terry Kubicka of the U.S. at the 1976 Winter Olympics and world championships. It was banned soon after. Malinin, the self-proclaimed \"Quad God\" known for his jaw-dropping athleticism, debuted his backflip in competition at the Lombardia Trophy in September. The American perfected the backflip as a young gymnast before focusing solely on skating. \"I decided to put it in my free skate, because it fits the music really well,\" he said. \"It gets that audience applause, feels really suspenseful and I really just like doing it.\" While skaters such as Bonaly were docked two points for the illegal backflip, the element is not worth any points now it is legal, although could contribute to an athlete's artistic score. Germany's twice Olympic champion Katarina Witt is a big fan. \"I think (the backflip) is fun, I think it's great they do this,\" she recently told Olympics.com. \"They sometimes have to go with the flow. Everything is more creative for young people. \"You have those teenagers ... they grew up as a child in a more creative way and I think this already modernised the sport a lot. Now, we're saying, 'just do a backflip.' And why not?\" The ISU removed the somersault ban last June, saying in their meeting agenda: \"Somersault type jumps are very spectacular and nowadays it is not logical anymore to include them as illegal movements.\" Siao Him Fa did one at last year's world championships in Montreal, knowing the two-point deduction would not affect his finishing place en route to winning bronze. Malinin has had crowds roaring all season with his backflip that he lands on one foot. His chase of a second world title began with the short program on Thursday. The free skate is scheduled for Saturday.",
