      • "content": "Every year, the world celebrates World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) to raise awareness about birds and the plight they face while migrating along routes known as flyways. Annually, millions of birds undertake the world’s longest and largest migrations, traveling thousands of kilometres, traversing continents in search of breeding, feeding and resting grounds. During migration, birds play key roles in the environment including controlling pests, pollinating the crops humans depend on for food, and providing economic benefits through bird watching. This year’s WMBD theme Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities highlights the need for healthy coexistence between birds and humans, in the face of expanding urban developments, made worse by the changing climate. Birds are key indicators of environmental health, which makes them global barometers for assessing human impacts on ecosystems. Rapid urbanization, experienced in Africa and elsewhere poses a significant risk to birds and biodiversity. Many at times, these developments take place without careful consideration of the bird populations needs, thus damaging their habitats. Habitat disruption also creates opportunities for invasive alien species to thrive, consequently affecting ecosystems. According to a 2024 study, urbanization has led to a decrease in the variety of birds species in addition to shrinking of their roles in the ecosystem. In contrast, rural or less developed areas support a wider diversity of bird species. Further, the study noted that urbanization is driving out specialized species, despite the critical role played by these species in maintaining a healthy and balanced environment. Considering this, there are a number of measures that can be taken in urban areas to ensure that migratory birds are protected. Critical sites like grasslands and wetlands which migratory birds depend on are under threat, thus developing green spaces by planting native trees and shrubs e.g.parks and creating urban wetlands can provide safes places for birds.Collisions with glass buildings is another major cause of bird mortality, resulting in the deaths of millions of birds annually. Use of bird-friendly glass is critical in reducing bird mortalities. Bird friendly glass incorporates patterns or designs that help birds detect the glass as a barrier, thus minimizing collisions. Migratory birds rely on natural light along their migration routes. Light pollution can interfere with the natural environment adversely impacting birds and other species. Many migratory birds, especially those travelling at night, fly over areas of intense urban development where they experience high levels of artificial light, which may impact migration timing and other seasonal behavior. For instance, birds may misinterpret artificial light at night as a longer period of daylight and begin migration earlier than species not exposed to artificial light. This migration mistiming means that the birds end up using up their energy reserves, putting them at risk of exhaustion, collision with buildings and other infrastructure and predation among others. This can be tackled through reducing light emission by dimming or turning off unnecessary lights, avoiding high-intensity lighting, or using light shielding among other measures. Invasive species including cats, rats, and plants among others, pose significant threats to migratory birds through disrupting ecosystems, causing habitat loss and increasing predation and food competition. Rodents including rats and mice negatively impact seabird colonies including migratory species, preying on eggs. chicks and adults, ultimately leading to population declines or even local extinctions. Further, these invasive species compete with birds for food and nesting sites. Thus, it is vital to put in place effective programs that minimise the effect of these species on migratory bird populations. Integrating biodiversity conservation into urban planning, protecting green spaces, and promoting wildlife friendly policies is imperative for protection of ecosystems that sustain biodiversity and human life. As we mark World Migratory Bird Day, let us remember that building bird friendly cities and communities is a shared responsibility, and we all can make a difference. • "content": "By Chanda Chisala. Imagine we are at the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the United States decides to donate vaccines and masks to Zambia, but half of these get stolen by people at the Ministry of Health so that they can sell them to the public secretly. Would it make sense for the US to say “we won’t send you any more COVID vaccines and life-saving masks any more”? This would be a strange decision because many more lives would be lost without such assistance, even if it is tainted by corruption and theft. That imaginary situation is exactly identical to the recent shocking decision by the US to withhold medical assistance to Zambia without warning. Yes, there is rampant theft involved in the medical aid “business,” but is withholding such aid the most practical solution? Surely there are other ways the US can impose accountability measures on the Zambian government without endangering the lives of so many people who are dependent on this assistance. Personally, I am ultimately against the existence of all such aid because it makes poor countries too dependent on the discretion of the benefactor. It is risky to put the health of your people at the mercy of a foreign government, and the Zambian government should find a way of weaning the country from all such dependence. But it can only be done after finding self-sustaining alternatives to the status quo. It is therefore quite inhumane for the US to withdraw such aid before they could first ensure that the country they have helped become dependent on them finds another way to provide healthcare to its people. It doesn’t take one day to build a new system of health provision if your entire healthcare infrastructure was built on the promise of aid. The bottom line is that lives are being saved by these donations even when theft is involved in the process, just as vaccines or masks were saving lives even if crooked middlemen were no doubt involved in their distribution. This does not mean we are defending the evil and greedy thefts at the ministry of health; it only means we encourage a more humane solution that considers the risks of instant withdrawal. • "content": "By Kapya Kaoma In Zambian politics, memory is fragile. To enter the corridors of power means leaving your convictions at the door. One day, a man stands tall on principle; the next, he’s bowing at the altar of convenience. And few recent conversions have been as swift—or as sorrowful—as that of Dr. Elias Munshya. Once a bold and eloquent voice against injustice, Munshya earned respect for his incisive commentary while studying in the United States. He criticized the Lungu regime with courage, drawing on legal acumen and moral clarity. He even cited my own work, showing the intellectual independence that once defined his public presence. Then, his phone rang from the Plot One. “Dr. Elias. This is President Hakainde Hichilema. You are appointed Zambia’s High Commissioner to Australia.” Munshya’s once prophetic voice first softened, then fell silent—only to reappear, oddly upbeat and devoutly loyal to the god he now serves. Like Pilato before him, he traded in his prophetic independence for the purse. But at what cost? I don’t believe every public servant should become a sycophant. It is possible to serve and still speak the truth to power. But Munshya has chosen the path of complicity, not conscience. His defense of the widely criticized Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act—rebranded under UPND as a mere “improvement”—reeks of hypocrisy and shame. This is the same law Hichilema once passionately opposed. Even more disconcerting is Munshya’s endorsement of constitutional amendments and the controversial delimitation of constituencies—moves that Hichilema, not long ago, condemned as anti-democratic. The President even quoted the Holy Bible to justify his opposition. Lungu listened and didn’t do it. But why is HH so busy trying to do it? Can Munshya answer us? Seriously, I wonder if Munshya’s legal and theological training failed him, or only suppressed to impress his god. As both lawyer and theologian, Munshya should know better. Instead, his recent online appearances veer into the surreal. In one video, with an unnerving smile, he claims to be “hated” by PF loyalists—wearing their scorn like a crown. But this isn’t hatred; it’s heartbreak. The disappointment in his Facebook comments is palpable. People aren’t angry because he’s changed roles. They’re grieving because he has lost his ubuntu. He boasts about falling fuel prices and a strengthening kwacha, but conveniently ignores the full picture. The dollar is wobbling under global pressures, and the Trump-era tariffs have shaken markets far beyond Zambia’s influence. And what about the $20 million in drought relief that vanished without a trace? Or the $3 billion in corruption losses recently flagged by the U.S. Ambassador? On these matters, Munshya is suspiciously silent. Of course, a diplomat lives off government allowances. Silence can be bought—but not dignity and decency. The people see through it. They know when a man has gone from advocate to apologist. They can equally tell when a sharp mind has dulled into a political mouthpiece of useless propaganda. And they mourn the decency that was lost in the trade. I don’t think Dr. Munshya isn’t just defending Hichilema’s politics, he’s auditioning for him. Whether he’s angling for a cabinet post or praying for a political resurrection, the performance is in full swing. We can all see it. But there is something every politician should remember–there is life after politics. Sadly, dignity and decency, once traded, can hardly be reclaimed. In politics, after the applause fades and the titles vanish, it won’t be party loyalists who write your legacy, but the people who remember who you used to be. I pray Amb. Elias Munshya still has a chance to reclaim that man. But for now, all I can pray is, God help him. God help me too. Kapya Kaoma",

Magnate is a well-known entrepreneur, UNZA lecturer, and digital expert whose experience and charisma will be key in driving the brand’s social projects forward. “Becoming a brand ambassador is not just a title; it’s a deepening of a relationship built on trust, shared values, and a common mission,” said Magnate during his speech. “These projects are not just about talk — they’re about real action, real impact, and real change.” 1xBet x Magnate: A Partnership for Change By combining Magnate’s expertise in education, entrepreneurship, and media with 1xBet’s mission to support local communities, the brand is launching three social projects focused on Zambia’s key areas: education, responsible betting, and road safety. 1xBusinessHub: A Business School for Youth This educational initiative for young entrepreneurs featuresMagnate as the main lecturer and mentor. The program includes: • Three lectures covering the basics of business, finance, and affiliate marketing; • A special session on betting basics and responsible gaming; • An online version of the course available to all registered users. Upon completion, participants will submit their business plans. The top three will pitch their ideas live to a jury led by Magnate. The winner receives a grant to launch their project — a real chance to turn ideas into reality. “I know what it’s like to start from zero. And I know how much it means to have someone believe in your potential,” emphasizes the new 1xBet ambassador. 1xBalance: Responsible Gaming Campaign Together with Magnate, the brand is launching a campaign to promote responsible betting, featuring: • Magnate’s video tips on bankroll management and betting strategies; • Live streams discussing betting and principles of healthy play; • An online quiz to test knowledge of responsible gaming rules; • A social media challenge and content series under the hashtag #1xBalance. The goal is not only to inform but to cultivate a new culture of safe, risk-free gaming. “Freedom means choice — but choice should be informed. We want betting to stay fun, safe, and smart,” says Magnate. Safety on the Road: A Culture of Driving Responsibility 1xBet and Magnate join forces to promote responsible road behavior through the Safety on the Road campaign. This initiative targets all road users — from drivers to pedestrians — with the aim of making Zambia’s roads safer for everyone. Magnate actively supports the mission: “Every day, we face risks on the roads. Through media, through public events, through personal example — I want to be part of the solution.” As project ambassador, Magnate will take part in: • Three TV segments addressing road safety and infrastructure; • Masterclasses and “road-talks” for drivers — practical sessions on real-life road scenarios; • A video tour with Magnate behind the wheel, sharing his perspective on road safety; • A night roadshow as the campaign’s grand finale and a public call to action. Each project will include educational media coverage, a dedicated website section, social media support, and integration with local influencers and media outlets. “This is more than just a partnership. It’s an opportunity to do something meaningful together with a brand that genuinely cares about people,” says Magnate. 1xBet = Responsible Gaming, Responsible Driving, and Responsible Education 1xBet has long been known as a brand that supports local initiatives and invests in societal development. Its partnership with Magnate goes beyond traditional ambassadorship — it’s a strategic collaboration to elevate financial, educational, and social awareness in Zambia. “There’s a lot of work ahead — but I’m ready. And I know that together, we’re going to do something truly valuable for Zambia.” 1xBet continues to deliver social messages through innovative formats: live streams, educational platforms, media projects, and offline events. In 2025, the brand — alongside Magnate — will focus on responsibility, progress, and meaningful development. • "content": "In betting, the concept of “bankroll” refers to a specific amount of money allocated for betting. It’s not your salary or savings, but rather funds set aside for entertainment. It is a separate gaming budget that allows you to play comfortably and enjoyably , without feeling stressed. Such clear financial boundaries help avoid impulsive decisions and increase the game quality. Bankroll keeps your funds under control – it’s a tool for a conscious approach that makes the game a part of life, not the other way around. How to set your ideal bankroll? The main rule: use only money that is not needed for basic expenses. Betting is entertainment, not a guaranteed source of income. Make a monthly budget Subtract mandatory expenses (rent, food, transportation) Divide the rest: 10–15% – this is your “comfort zone” for the game Tip: Keep track of your spending in a spreadsheet or app — it will help you better understand your habits. Formulas that work Bankroll formula: Bankroll = 10% of free income For example, if you have 5,000 available, you allocate 500 — this is a safe amount for betting. Betting formula: Bet = 1–5% of bankroll With a bankroll of 500, it is wise to bet 5–25. It allows you to play longer and more confidently. How to adapt bankroll to your playing style? Flat is a stable strategy where each bet is the same (for example, 3% of the bankroll). Martingale is a strategy with increased risk. It requires deep understanding and a careful approach. Long-term bets – reserve part of the bankroll, as the funds do not return immediately. How to control your bankroll every day? Create a separate wallet for the game Record all bets – manually or in special apps Keep your own statistics and analyze the results every week Use the self-control tools available on modern platforms, including spending limits and viewing betting history. 1xBet offers many convenient features and tools for self-monitoring and analysis. The brand is currently conducting an educational project, 1xBalance, on responsible betting, which helps players better understand their habits and maintain a healthy balance between gaming and life. Educational initiatives: 1xBet supports responsible gaming A smart game is a style that players worldwide strive for. As a socially responsible brand, 1xBet is implementing the #1xBalance project to help users better understand themselves and play consciously. An interactive test will help assess the level of self-control Educational materials teach how to manage a budget and avoid mistakes SMM campaign delivers messages through advice, stories, and experiences of other players Visual formats (infographics, videos, posters) – make the topic accessible and understandable Responsible betting is not about restrictions, it’s about freedom. The freedom to play confidently, knowing your limits. Bankroll is a skill that brings pleasure Bankroll is not just about numbers; it’s also about mental discipline. The sooner you build it, the more comfortable and positive your game will be. Join the #1xBalance initiative and follow the brand on its social media. • "content": "Former British Army officer and mercenary Simon Mann, who was part of a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea in 2004, has died of a heart attack while exercising, friends confirmed. The 72-year-old made millions of pounds from protecting businesses in conflict zones before he took part in the failed attempt to overthrow the west African nation's ruler. Mr Mann was sentenced to 34 years in prison on arms charges and later admitted he had been the \"manager, not the architect\" of the scheme. In 2009, the ex-SAS commando was pardoned, released and given 48 hours to leave the country. Mr Mann attended private boys' school Eton before studying at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and then joining the Scots Guards. He became a member of the SAS - the army's special forces unit - and rose through the ranks to become a commander. In 2011, he said the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea - which saw him arrested with fellow mercenaries after trying to load weapons onto a plane in Zimbabwe - was foiled by the CIA. After serving three years of his 34-year sentence in Zimbabwe, he was moved to Black Beach Prison in Equatorial Guinea. Speaking in 2011 about that move, he said \"friends, family, and enemies\" had told him \"if that happens, you have had it, you're a dead man\". After being pardoned and released, he expressed regret for what he had done, saying that \"however good the money is\", the moral case \"has to stack up\".",

      • "content": "South Africa has criticised the US amid reports it could receive white Afrikaners as refugees as early as next week. A document seen by the BBC's US partner, CBS, describes the potential resettlement as a \"priority\" for President Donald Trump's government, however the timing has not been publicly confirmed by the White House. In a statement published on Friday , South Africa's foreign ministry described the purported move as \"politically motivated\" and designed to undermine South Africa's \"constitutional democracy\". In February President Trump described Afrikaners as victims of \"racial discrimination\" in an executive order, opening up the prospect for them to resettle in the US. The South African authorities said they would not block the departures of those chosen for resettlement, but that the government had sought assurances from its American counterpart that those selected had been fully vetted and did not have pending criminal charges. South Africa reiterated that allegations of discrimination against the country's white minority are unfounded, adding that crime statistics do not indicate that any racial group has been targeted in violent crimes on farms. Some groups representing the rights of white farmers have said they are being deliberately killed because of their race. A spokesperson for the US state department told the BBC they were interviewing individuals interested in resettling in the US, and prioritising \"Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination\", but would not confirm when the resettlement would begin. The Trump administration has also accused South Africa of seizing land from white farmers without compensation, something Pretoria has repeatedly denied. • "content": "<p>Addis Ababa: The death toll from Africa&#39;s ongoing mpox outbreak has surpassed 1,750, as the number of cases reported since the beginning of 2024 approaches 130,000, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).</p><p>During an online media briefing on Thursday evening, Ngashi Ngongo, chief of staff and head of the Executive Office at the Africa CDC, said that 24 mpox-affected African countries have reported 129,711 mpox cases since the start of last year. Of these, 29,609 were confirmed and about 1,751 related deaths were recorded.</p><p>Data from the African Union (AU)&#39;s specialized healthcare agency showed that last week alone, the continent reported 3,553 new cases, including 758 confirmed ones and 12 new related deaths. Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda contributed to 93.3 percent of all confirmed cases reported during the past week.</p><p>The Africa CDC further warned over the continued surge in mpox cases, as the total number of cases reported so far this year constitutes about two thirds of last year&#39;s total. The continent has recorded 52,082 mpox cases since the beginning of this year, it noted.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Africa CDC has raised the alarm regarding the increasing trend of public health emergencies occurring throughout the continent.</p><p>&quot;In 2024, we had, in total, 117 moderate and high risk public health events. This year, we are already at 120. We have had 34 high risk, and 86 moderate risk events this year. This shows that the situation is not reducing,&quot; Ngongo said, adding that the top disease outbreaks reported by AU members so far in 2025 include mpox, cholera, dengue, and Lassa fever.</p><p>Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, was first detected in laboratory monkeys in 1958. It is a rare viral disease typically transmitted through body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. The infection often causes fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.</p><p>In August last year, the Africa CDC declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency of continental security. Shortly afterward, the World Health Organization designated the viral disease as a public health emergency of international concern.</p>",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa has partnered with the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference to foster collaboration between Spanish and South African energy companies. The partnership builds on dual goals of driving investment and development in South Africa and will support greater participation by Spanish firms at this year's edition of the conference – scheduled for September 29 to October 3. As a non-profit entity whose main objective is the promotion of commercial, economic and industrial relations between Spain and South Africa, the Chamber of Commerce seeks to strengthen business prosperity and trade between the two nations. At the heart of this strategy is the energy industry, with the Chamber committing to exposing its members to emerging opportunities in both Spain and South Africa. At AEW: Invest in African Energies, the Chamber will play an instrumental part in strengthening energy relations and trade, supporting market entry by Spanish firms into South Africa. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit for more information about this exciting event. The opportunities for heightened collaboration between Spain and South Africa are extensive. While Spain is a net-importer of oil and gas, Spanish oil and gas firms have seen great success abroad, highlighting the level of expertise the country has to offer. Spanish companies such as multinational energy and petrochemical firm Repsol already have a strong presence in Africa, offering significant expertise that could help unlock South Africa's energy industry. The company has been active in Algeria since 1973, recently receiving approval to invest up to €731 million in oil and gas blocks in the country. The Chamber has also been active in Libya since the 1970s and is implementing an ambitious exploration agenda in the country. It plans to drill nine wells consecutively via two drilling rigs by November 2025, and aims to increase production to 350,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the country. As of December 2024, production stood at 300,000 bpd. Meanwhile, for South Africa, which is only just starting to realize the full potential of its oil and gas market, Spanish partnerships could propel a hydrocarbon evolution. Despite being a frontier market, South Africa has proven oil and gas discoveries and significant upside potential. The Luiperd and Brulpadda discoveries, for example, are the largest discoveries of natural gas resources in South Africa to date. Situated in the Outeniqua Basin, operator Africa Oil Corp plans to conduct surveys within the Block 11B/12B area to determine a development plan. Additionally, South Africa's Orange Basin – shared with Namibia where several high-impact finds have been made – offers strategic opportunities for billion-barrel finds. International companies have recently expanded their footprint in the basin, led by firms such as Eco Atlantic, TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy. In the green energy sector, Spain is spearheading Europe's energy transition through rapid developments in green hydrogen. According to the World Economic Forum, the country already accounts for 20% of green hydrogen projects announced in the European Union, with plans to create industrial clusters expected to bolster the bloc's clean energy adoption. South Africa is also targeting ambitious green hydrogen projects. The government introduced a R300 billion investment pipeline in 2023, targeting between 6 and 13 million tons of green hydrogen and derivatives production per annum by 2050. Up to 19 projects were identified for accelerated development and global support will be key to bring these projects into fruition. In 2023, Spain committed $2.3 billion to help fund South Africa's energy transition, but further support could unlock greater value from the country's renewable energy industry. “Global partnerships are fundamental for countries seeking to rapidly grow their oil, gas and renewable energy industries. Spain and South Africa have significant potential to expand their trade, energy and business ties, and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa works hard to achieve mutual development goals,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber. • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) President Cyril Ramaphosa today convened ministers and senior business leaders under the Government Business Partnership. The partners agreed to fast-track the implementation of key structural reforms and support performance improvements at Transnet and Eskom through an accelerated delivery plan and an intensified phase of the Partnership's ongoing efforts to expedite delivery on priority interventions vital to economic growth and job creation. The partnership believes that this acceleration is necessary to achieve a step-change in progress in response to difficult economic headwinds. Focus will remain on improving Eskom's Energy Availability Factor (EAF) and unblocking delays in new generation capacity to ensure a continued reprieve from load shedding. Work is underway to resolve grid access and allocation bottlenecks that hinder new generation projects. Whilst Transnet's performance is not at the level required, it has stabilised and there is a significant focus on growing volumes which will increase exports and revenue collected to support economic growth and preserve and grow employment. Expediting reforms and performance improvement is crucial to reducing the possible negative impact of the complex global and domestic environment, which continues to present substantial challenges and uncertainty. GDP growth projections for 2025 have been revised down, and current forecasts remain far below the minimum 3% required to create the level of jobs needed to make an impact on the country's high levels of unemployment. The Government Business Partnership, established in 2023, is focused on accelerating crucial reforms and operational improvements to lift confidence levels and to drive economic growth in four priority areas: energy, transport and logistics, crime and corruption, and youth employment (the latter added in January 2025). President Cyril Ramaphosa said:“Through the strength of this partnership, we have been able to unlock many constraints that undermine growth and job creation. While there is much to improve, the dedication and commitment from both government and business remains undiminished. The pace of our work must increase to match the scale of the challenge.” Important progress has been made to lay the groundwork for sustained accelerated action, including the finalisation of the Transnet Network Statement, the launch of a Request for Information (RFI) to attract private investment in port and rail infrastructure, and NERSA's approval of electricity wheeling regulations. These reforms enable broader private sector participation in energy and transportation and logistics. Both the crime and corruption and the youth employment focal areas are largely tracking against their plans which have a longer-term time horizon. In line with this commitment to focused execution, the Partnership welcomed the launch of the second phase of Operation Vulindlela, which has a delivery focus that closely aligns with the Partnership's objective of more rapidly accelerating reforms and operational improvements that will drive growth and job creation. Adrian Gore, BUSA Vice President and business co-convenor of the Partnership, said:“We are entering this accelerated execution“sprint” with a real sense of urgency. Progress has been made, but it's not enough. This requires a step change in the pace of decision making and execution. We need to redouble our collective efforts to help shift the country onto a sustained upward trajectory and deliver on our shared ambition of a virtuous cycle of growth, jobs, a more positive narrative and increased investment.” Distributed by APO Group on behalf of The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa. • "description": "The head of Liberia's doctors' association has not provided proof of his medical degree, the regulatory body says.",
      • "content": "The head of Liberia's doctors' association has been banned from practising medicine after a regulatory body said it did not have evidence of his initial medical degree. As part of a qualifications audit, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) asked Peter Matthew George to provide his professional certificates. In April, the LMDC told Dr George that it had revoked his license as he had not given satisfactory proof he had graduated in medicine from the UK's University of Hertfordshire as, it said, he had been claiming. Dr George has disputed the LMDC's findings. He told the BBC there was a \"bias\" against him because of his advocacy in a row between doctors and the government. In a letter to Dr George explaining its decision, the LMDC said he had not provided an actual certificate of his qualification from the University of Hertfordshire but instead sent an \"award verification letter\" which said he had \"obtained an MD\". The LMDC pointed out that \"MD\" is a qualification acquired in the US and not the UK. Furthermore, the LMDC said \"of utmost concern is that investigation showed that the only University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom does not currently offer a medical degree\". The university told the BBC that \"following a thorough review of our academic records, we can confirm that there is no evidence that this individual was ever awarded any degree by the University nor studied here. Any claim to the contrary is therefore false and constitutes a misrepresentation of our institution. \"We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities in Liberia and will continue to support any investigations as required.\" In his education record on LinkedIn, Dr George said he had studied for a \"professional doctorate in medicine MD, general medicine\" at Hertfordshire between 2010 and 2014. His LinkedIn page has since been taken down. But in an email to the BBC, Dr George said his primary medical degree was not from the British university. \"I never told anyone so. Those are make-up stories,\" he wrote. Asked why he had mentioned the University of Hertfordshire, he said: \"Maybe I made an error when writing because am under pressure.\" Instead, he said his initial medical degree was from the University of Central Nicaragua. He said that since starting practising medicine in Liberia in 2014, and providing his qualifications to the authorities at the time, no-one had raised an issue with his work. In fact, he said, he had been promoted and praised for improving the medical facilities at the Chief Jallah Lone Government Hospital in Gbarpolu county. \"I have served the Liberian health sector diligently for over a decade with no record of misconduct,\" he said. Dr George argued that problems began to arise after he became the president of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) in December last year. He said he was continuing \"the long-standing advocacy for the rights and welfare of doctors and dentists in the country\" and said hostility against him began after the LMDA raised issues with the \"reclassification of all government-employed specialists and consultants\". The news that he had been barred from the profession has only just emerged as Dr George was given 15 working days to respond. The medical council said it did not receive a response. In a statement, the LMDA said it had now \"nullified\" his presidency and that he was no longer a member of the association. Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "Nintendo has tightened its user agreement, revising the terms and conditions with a tougher stance on players who hack their Switch console, run emulators, or any other such \"unauthorized use.\" Until May 6, players agreed that they \"are not allowed to lease, rent, sublicense, publish, copy, modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble all or any portion of the Nintendo Account Services without Nintendo's written consent, or unless otherwise expressly permitted by applicable law.\" Now, however, that section has been significantly lengthened in the U.S., and now reads: As pointed out by Nintendo Life , this is different again in the UK, with players agreeing that: While Nintendo hasn't clarified what \"unusable\" means, exactly, the wording suggests Nintendo now reserves the right to \"brick\" your console if it thinks you've broken its rules. Changes to the privacy policy now also stress that Nintendo may listen to Switch users' online chats \"in order to support a safe and family-friendly online environment and to detect violations of the Nintendo Account Agreement and other harmful or illegal interactions.\" The changes likely reflect some of Nintendo's recent frustrations, such as its high-profile piracy cases, as well as next month's launch of the highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 , which is set to debut on June 5. Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders went live on April 24, with the price still fixed at $449.99 — and they went about as well as you'd expect . Meanwhile, Nintendo has issued a warning to U.S. customers who applied for a Switch 2 pre-order from the My Nintendo Store , saying release date delivery is not guaranteed due to very high demand. • "content": "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive has released Patch 1.2.3 for its well-received role-playing game across all platforms. The update makes a long list of fixes and, crucially, balance changes, including nerfing Clair Obscur’s most game-breaking build (patch notes below). Sandfall had signalled this change was coming, saying it hadn’t planned to make any balance tweaks this early — just bug fixes, “unless something clearly stood out.” “Well, Stendhal did,” the developer continued. The build in question is (was!) for young fencer Maelle and a sword called Medalum , which unlocks a Virtuose Stance that deals 200% bonus damage. Players were combining this with ability-stacking and the Stendahl skill, which deals extreme single target Void damage, to dish out billions of damage, enough to kill the final boss in just one hit. “It was underwhelming for most of development, so in our final pre-release balance pass, we gave it a big damage boost — and clearly overdid it. It ended up overshadowing most other options,” Sandfall said. “We still want you to be able to break the game — and you absolutely still can — but Stendhal was making it a bit too easy.” The nerf is included in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s first full hotfix set. While Stendhal is still a strong single-hit skill with great synergy potential, it’s now more in-line with everything else. Meanwhile, the patch fixes what sounds like a bug that was making Medalum third Lumina doubling all damage in Virtuose Stance, instead of doubling only Burn damage. Here's the relevant points from today's patch notes: Fixed Medalum third Lumina doubling all damage in Virtuose Stance instead of doubling only Burn damage. Stendhal: Reduced damage by 40%. Clair Obscur is a breakout hit for Sandfall, and has already sold over 2 million copies . It’s worth remembering that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was, alongside Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered, a day-one Game Pass title. That makes this sales milestone all the more impressive. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has done so well that French President Macron has praised the development team . Be sure to check out our tips for the important things to know before heading into the game. • "content": "According to Cineverse, which has acquired the rights for the third Silent Hill film in the U.S. when it releases later this year, Return to Silent Hill will be a \"faithful adaptation\" of the original Silent Hill 2's story. Director Christophe Gans added: “I am delighted to partner with Cineverse, which has shown a genuine understanding of fanship. Return to Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami’s iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer.\" The film's plot will feel familiar to anyone who played the original Silent Hill 2 or the 2024 Bloober remake . It follows \"James (Jeremy Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil\" and \"terrifying figures both familiar and new.\" It was unveiled in October 2022 , but it took until May 2024 for us to get our first glimpse at Return to Silent Hill's version of Red Pyramid Thing — AKA Pyramid Head. Gans' first Silent Hill movie , based loosely upon the first game, follows mother Rose as she searches for her missing daughter, Sharon, in a town where it snows during summer. Although the screenplay was written by Oscar-winning writer Roger Avary, who wrote Pulp Fiction, we thought Gans' first adaptation was a mediocre 5/10, writing : \"So there we have it. Our worst fears realized yet again. The video game-to-film genre has endured more than a decade of mediocrity. Silent Hill is probably the smartest and best-looking video game adaptation yet, it just doesn't have much else going for it. After all, video games are about entertainment, and Silent Hill is a chore to sit through.\" The second movie, Silent Hill: Revelation — which was not directed by Gans but instead by Michael J. Bassett — was based loosely on sequel Silent Hill 3 . That secured a less favorable 4.5 in our review: \"Silent Hill Revelation 3D is an inferior sequel in every way, shape and form, a horror sequel that fails to either intrigue or scare, and one that just might have killed the franchise cold-dead.\" Return to Silent Hill is slated to release sometime later this year, with Cineverse promising a \"wide theatrical release in America.\" Vikki Blake is a reporter, critic, columnist, and consultant. • "content": "U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted James Bond has \"nothing to worry about\" despite the ongoing tariff war. This week, the U.S. and the UK signed a trade deal and as part of the announcement, Trump said he’d consider lowering levies on UK-made films, despite imposing 100% taxes on foreign movies. The 007 franchise is often filmed at England’s famous Pinewood Studios, but it is a globe-trotting production, with exotic locations part of the appeal of each movie. Here’s Trump’s quote in full: “As you know we’re putting tariffs on that particular film set, the movie makers, and we’re going to be doing some tariffs to get that because a lot of them have left this country. They all live here, the money comes from here, everything comes from here, but they make them in other countries. So, we’re gonna do something to bring them back, maybe to a large extent. “But James Bond has nothing to worry about, that I can tell you. And you know, Sean Connery was a friend of mine. Sean Connery was responsible for my getting zoning in Aberdeen. He said, ‘Let the bloody bloke build his golf courses.’ I was like four years into the process, and it was impossible in Aberdeen. He just stood up one day and he said that. As soon as he said that I got the approvals in about two minutes. He was a great guy, Sean Connery.” Earlier this week, Trump told reporters at the White House that he intended to meet with film industry executives for their thoughts on his proposal for 100% tariffs on non-U.S. movies. \"I’m not looking to hurt the industry, I want to help the industry,\" Trump said, according to CNBC . The President added: “I want to make sure they’re happy with it because we’re all about jobs.” Trump's plan to impose tariffs on films produced outside the U.S. was met with surprise and confusion from industry insiders, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter . The White House has since said that no decision has been made . Trump's Hollywood envoy, Oscar winner Jon Voight, and Voight's producing partner Steven Paul have reportedly submitted to Trump a “comprehensive” plan to rescue the entertainment industry . Jon Voight and Steven Paul previously teamed for Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 and Dracula: The Dark Prince. As for James Bond, it was announced that Amazon had assumed full creative control over 007 earlier this year, although we’re no closer to knowing who will play the famous spy in whatever’s next. James Bond will reportedly remain a man and still be British or from the Commonwealth, however . In February, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos asked fans who they’d pick as the next James bond, and the answer was loud and clear . Photo by Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images. Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. But, for the 49-year-old, the move to join a nation ranked 117th in the world and 31st in Africa was based on a shared idea. \"I chose to be here in Libya and start this project because from my very first meeting with the board members of the Libyan Football Federation I felt the willingness and how much they believed in me as a person and as a coach,\" Cisse told BBC Sport Africa. \"They have a clear vision, and there is where our ideas met.\" Despite reports that he joined as one of the best-paid international coaches in Africa, Cisse insists he is not a hired gun, but someone who can lay the foundations for success. In Senegal, he spent a decade shaping a generation that would go on to secure the country's first senior continental title. He hopes to have a similar impact in Libya after agreeing an initial two-year deal. \"This country is full of talent and potential,\" he said. \"My job is to put Libyan football in the place it deserves. \"I am a man of a project, a builder of generations. In Senegal I had a fruitful 10-year project. \"I'm full of passion and confidence that I will repeat the same thing here.\" Libya have not qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) since 2012 and Cisse has already seen several aspects which can be improved. \"The players possess undeniable technical skills and there's an abundance of raw talent,\" he said. \"What's lacking, however, is experience and improved game management. \"Talent alone isn't enough at the African level - we need more commitment, fighting spirit, confidence and discipline to reach our goals.\" Cisse is still waiting for his first win as Libya coach, having picked up one point from games against Angola and Cameroon in qualifiers for the 2026 Fifa World Cup in March. Those results left his side five points adrift of Group D leaders Cape Verde and four points behind Cameroon with four rounds of preliminaries remaining. A second-placed finish could secure a continental play-off spot and extend hopes of reaching next year's finals. \"Our chances are still alive. In football, nothing is impossible,\" Cisse said. \"We must prepare thoroughly for the next two matches away to Angola and home to Eswatini.\" Since his opening two games, the Senegalese has held strategic meetings with Libyan officials to establish a roadmap for the future. Top of the agenda is building a balanced team structure that blends domestic talent with players from the diaspora. \"We have some very important milestones ahead that can accelerate our development,\" he added. \"We have the opportunity to participate in the Arab Cup [in December], which will serve as valuable preparation ahead of the Afcon 2027 qualifiers. \"Our main goal - qualification for Afcon 2027 - was set by the federation. Libya hasn't reached the tournament in 15 years, and that must change.\" Cisse also clarified one key talking point regarding using players based in Libya as the core of his side. \"I've heard rumours suggesting that I won't rely on local players. I want to firmly deny that,\" he stated. \"The foundation of our work will begin with domestic-based players. I intend to build around them and enhance the squad with professional reinforcements from abroad. \"There are Libyan players in Germany, Spain, Belgium and other leagues. I will reach out to every one of them. \"We are ready to welcome all who are committed to this national project.\" Cisse accepts that, given his achievements with Senegal and his profile, he and Libya's results will come under scrutiny. Yet while pressure often defines coaching roles in Africa, Cisse embraces it. \"There's positive pressure and negative pressure,\" he said. \"High level football is all about pressure and every person who wants to succeed in life must accept pressure. \"After 35 years of my football career, I can manage pressure. I can even use this positive pressure as motivation.\" Cisse has scouted players in the Libyan Premier League and begun to embed himself in the North African country's footballing culture. He insists he is fully committed to the Mediterranean Knights. \"I have absolutely no intention of leaving,\" he emphasised. \"My morale is high.\" Cisse says that having pride in representing Libya will be a cornerstone of his vision for the side. \"A player can represent many clubs throughout his career, but he will only ever have one national team,\" he said. \"Playing for the national team should be seen as a great honour. \"I love players who are willing to fight for their country. If we instil this mentality, nothing will stop us. \"In Senegal, I worked with world-class stars, but they all came together for one national mission. \"That's exactly the kind of tradition I want to build here in Libya.\" Cisse's journey with Libya may begin with trying to remain in the hunt for a first-ever appearance at the World Cup, but securing a place at the Africa Cup of Nations would secure him an exalted status with the country's fans.",

      • "content": "The latest casting news for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sparked excited speculation that Miles Morales may finally be set to make his MCU debut. Deadline reported that Liza Colón-Zayas, best known for playing Tina Marrero on FX’s The Bear, has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact Colón-Zayas is of Puerto Rican descent and grew up in New York. Miles Morales is, of course, of Puerto Rican descent and grew up in New York. However, some are saying the addition of Miles Morales to the MCU is wishful thinking, and Colón-Zayas may instead play a mother-type figure for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, replacing Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May, who died in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home . Colón-Zayas joins Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink in Brand New Day. Sink’s casting also sparked significant speculation, with some pointing to X-Men character Jean Grey ( Sink herself has remained coy on the rumors ). Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, who play Peter’s love interest MJ and close friend Ned respectively, are expected to return, according to Deadline. Brand New Day is expected to be something of a reset given the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In that film, Peter reintroduces himself to MJ after Doctor Strange erases his identity from everyone’s memory. The MCU is in full swing once again, with Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* now behind us, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps set to kick off Phase Six in July. Avengers: Doomsday comes out May 1, 2026, then Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases on July 31, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is set for May 7, 2027. Interestingly, Tom Holland was not among the names revealed as part of Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement . Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. Talking to NBC , the Pope's older brother, John Prevost, shared details of his last conversation with his brother before he was appointed. In amongst talking about Wordle and Words with Friends — it's true, Pope Leo XIV is a gamer; the brothers play the word games together every single day — the elder brother asked if his sibling had watched the movie Conclave for tips. \"He had just finished watching the movie Conclave,\" Provost revealed. \"So he knew how to behave. So, it's that kind of stuff [that we talk about] — I just wanted to take his mind off of [the upcoming conclave]. Laugh about something.\" From director Edward Berger, the BAFTA and Oscar-winning Conclave follows one of the world's most secretive and ancient events — selecting a new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church's most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church. • "content": "Nintendo just released its financial results for the 2025 fiscal year (April 2024-March 2025), and in the accompanying online press conference on May 8, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shed more light on the company’s high expectations for the Switch 2, as well as the obstacles that could impede its success — including U.S. tariffs. Not only that, the Japanese game giant is also hoping that the Switch 2 launch effect will boost its overall sales for FY2026 by 63.1% to 1.9 trillion yen (approx. $13.04 billion USD) and final profits by 7.6% to 300 billion yen (approx. $2.05 billion USD). However, Furukawa’s speech revealed concerns about the U.S. market and future profitability of the Switch 2. As a next gen console with extra features and improvements over the original, the Switch 2 console is more expensive than its predecessor. “The unit sales price is high, and there are corresponding hurdles, however we are aiming for a launch on par with (the first) Switch.” said Furukawa, as quoted in the Yomiuri Shimbun . (The Switch 1 sold 15.05 million units in its first year, while Switch 2 is forecast to shift at least 15 million units). These “corresponding hurdles” include worries about the U.S., which has been Nintendo’s biggest market for the Switch 1. President Furukawa raised concerns about the possible impacts of Trump’s tariffs on the Switch 2 and the American people’s spending power. In the online press conference, Furukawa stated that the tariff policy will impact Nintendo’s profits by “tens of billions of yen.” He added: “If prices of daily necessities like food increase (because of the tariffs), then people will have less money to spend on game consoles. If we were to adjust the price of the Switch 2 (in response to the tariffs), this could decrease demand.” Analysts described Nintendo's 15 million Switch 2 sales forecast as \"concervative,\" noting the uncertainty around tariffs. Despite all this, demand for Switch 2 does seem huge. After a delay due to tariffs, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders went live on April 24 with the price of the console still fixed at $449.99 — and they went about as well as you'd expect . Meanwhile, Nintendo has issued a warning to U.S. customers who applied for a Switch 2 pre-order from the My Nintendo Store , saying release date delivery is not guaranteed due to very high demand. • "content": "( MENAFN - APO Group) Minister Dion George, South Africa's Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, has concluded an impactful participation at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial in Denmark on 7-8 May 2025, reinforcing South Africa's commitment to a resilient, sustainable future. Representing the nation ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Minister Dion George championed South Africa's priorities, ensuring the voices of its people, wildlife, and ecosystems shape the global climate agenda. The Ministerial was a critical platform to advance the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target, with direct implications for South Africans. Climate change threatens livelihoods through droughts, floods, and rising temperatures, impacting food security, jobs in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, and endangering iconic wildlife and vital marine resources. Minister Dion George's leadership secured progress on ambitious climate commitments that drive job creation, poverty reduction, and biodiversity conservation, embedding community and environmental upliftment. He advocated for a just transition, protecting workers in high-carbon sectors while unlocking opportunities in renewable energy and green technologies. Minister Dion George also championed increased climate finance for adaptation, including water infrastructure, climate-smart agriculture, and marine conservation, to improve daily life and protect ecosystems. From coastal communities to rural farms and wildlife reserves, South Africa promoted solutions to strengthen resilience against climate impacts. These outcomes translate into tangible benefits: cleaner air, safer water, healthier oceans, and new jobs in green sectors. South Africa's engagement secured stronger global partnerships, clearer funding pathways, and renewed momentum to tackle climate change, empowering communities and safeguarding natural heritage. Minister Dion George stated,“Our work in Copenhagen is a step toward a future where South Africans thrive in a low-carbon economy, with resilient communities and protected biodiversity. We will carry these engagements forward into the G20, ensuring our priorities continue to shape global climate action.” South Africa returns from Copenhagen with commitments to advance its climate agenda, delivering resources, technology, and support for its people and environment. The nation is poised to build on this momentum at the G20 and beyond, driving a just and sustainable future for all. • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization) Download logo The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) sounded the alarm today as persistent conflict, displacement, economic deterioration, and recurrent extreme weather in West and Central Africa are driving millions of people towards emergency levels of hunger (IPC4). According to the latest food security analysis of the Cadre Harmonisé, more than 36 million people are struggling to meet their basic food and nutrition needs, a number projected to rise to over 52 million during the June–August 2025 lean season, including almost three million in emergency conditions (IPC4), and 2,600 people in Mali at risk of facing catastrophic hunger (IPC5). Unyielding conflict has forcibly displaced more than 10 million of the most vulnerable across the region, including 2.4 million refugees and asylum seekers, in Chad, Cameroon, Mauritania, and Niger. Almost eight million more have been internally displaced mainly in Nigeria, and Cameroon. Many have been cut off from their livelihoods - fleeing farms and grazing lands in search of food and shelter. Food inflation exacerbated by rising food and fuel costs are pushing crisis hunger levels to new highs in Ghana, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire. Food prices continue to rise in Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon too, placing nutritious food far out of reach for the most vulnerable. Meanwhile, recurrent extreme weather, particularly in the Central Sahel, Lake Chad Basin, and Central African Republic erodes the ability of families to feed themselves. In 2024 alone, floods affected over six million people across the region. WFP stands ready to respond and scale up vital assistance WFP aims to reach almost 12 million women, men, girls and boys in West Africa and the Sahel with critical assistance and nutritional support this year to help the most vulnerable withstand hunger shocks when they inevitably occur. In 2025, WFP has already reached three million of the most vulnerable with life-saving assistance – including refugees, internally displaced persons, malnourished children under five, and pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls. While humanitarian needs are at a historical high, resources to mount an effective response at scale are not keeping pace. “We are at a tipping point and millions of lives are at stake.,” warned Margot van der Velden, WFP's Regional Director for West and Central Africa.“Without immediate funding, WFP will be forced to scale down even further both in the number of people reached and the size of food rations distributed. The consequences are devastating, communities already in crisis, many have been forced to sell their last assets and skip meals, risking long-term effects to their health and life.” Today, WFP warns that five million people risk losing assistance altogether unless urgent funding is received. Between June and August 2024, funding shortfalls forced WFP to assist only 7.3 million people in the Sahel - just 60 percent of the organization's intended target - with many receiving reduced rations. Insufficient funding also threatens the WFP-managed UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) operations from providing emergency support to the humanitarian community in Mali and Nigeria. UNHAS provides essential aviation services and logistics support to ensure frontline aid workers and life-saving supplies can reach those most in need. WFP urgently requires US$ 710 million to continue life-saving assistance for the most vulnerable in the region for the next six months (May–October 2025). Ending generational hunger cycles must address root causes Beyond emergency food assistance, WFP is urging governments and partners to invest in sustainable solutions aimed at building resilience and reducing long-term dependency on aid. Since 2018, WFP has been working with governments across the Sahel to address the root causes of hunger through its successful integrated Resilience Program – rehabilitating over 300,000 hectares of land to support over four million people in more than 3,400 villages. \"By leading the way and investing in early actions, and restoring ecosystems, we can protect vulnerable communities, save lives, reduce future humanitarian needs, and safeguard resilience gains across the Sahel,” added van der Velden.“We know what works. We urge the international community to collectively enhance investments in building back ecosystems and strengthening local economies for communities to thrive; it costs little and prevents crises.\" WFP remains committed to working closely with national authorities, regional bodies, and humanitarian partners to ensure timely, targeted, and safe assistance reaches those most in need. • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization)ABUJA, Nigeria, May 9, 2025/APO Group/ -- The ECOWAS Commission, through its Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, convened a high-level virtual consultation with Member States, regional social partners, and development stakeholders on 6 May 2025 to review and enrich the Draft ECOWAS Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan (2025–2035). The pre-validation meeting represents a crucial step towards finalising the Strategy, which is designed to strengthen the governance of labour migration across the ECOWAS region. Anchored in the ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, the Strategy is being developed through a participatory and inclusive approach involving Member States, the African Union Commission (AUC), International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), under the Joint Labour Migration Programme (JLMP), with support from the European Union and the, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The Commission reaffirmed that the Labour Migration Strategy constitutes a strategic response to current migration dynamics in West Africa, and reflects ECOWAS' commitment to advancing human mobility as a driver of regional integration, economic development, and social inclusion. It further emphasised the importance of aligning the Strategy with the AU-Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The consultation focused on five strategic pillars of the Strategy: promotion of regular migration and labour mobility; protection of migrant workers' rights; maximisation of migration's developmental impact; gender and social inclusion; and enhanced regional cooperation and institutional capacity. The document, which consolidates regional legal frameworks and emerging priorities, was presented in detail by the lead consultant, with statistical insights highlighting that West Africa hosts over 8.2 million international migrants, nearly half of whom are women. Representatives of Member States welcomed the Draft and provided constructive input, particularly on the harmonisation of labour migration data, ethical recruitment practices, diaspora engagement, and the facilitation of remittance flows. Several Member States called for greater investment in national capacity-building and alignment of national policies with the regional framework. Speaking during the session, Mr. Albert Siaw-Boateng, Director of Free Movement of Persons and Migration, highlighted ECOWAS' continued advocacy efforts and technical work with national immigration services. He noted the importance of being“ambassadors of the ECOWAS vision,” calling for collective responsibility in raising awareness of regional rights and obligations. Social partners, including representatives from trade unions and employers' organisations, emphasised the need for gender-responsive budgeting, reintegration pathways for returnees, and protection for low-skilled and informal sector migrant workers. The Action Plan-comprising over 130 activities mapped to specific outcomes and implementation responsibilities-was praised as a robust and actionable roadmap. The results of the virtual consultation will inform the revised draft of the ECOWAS Labour Migration Strategy and Action Plan to be tabled at the in-person validation workshop scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, from 13 to 15 May 2025. The ECOWAS Commission reiterated its gratitude to all partners and participants for their continued collaboration and reaffirmed its dedication to promoting safe, regular, and rights-based labour migration for the benefit of all ECOWAS citizens. • "content": "( MENAFN - Live Mint) African Parks, a charity linked to Prince Harry , has admitted that its rangers committed human rights abuses in Congo-Brazzaville, the BBC reported. Prince Harry has been part of African Parks since 2016. After six years as president, Meghan Markle's husband joined its Board of Directors in 2023. The BBC has asked the Duke of Sussex for a comment on the current situation. African Parks, based in Johannesburg, is a major conservation group managing 23 protected areas across 13 African countries. It's supported by powerful donors and receives over $500,000 ( ₹4.2 crore) in funding annually. Allegations against rangers Baka community members earlier made serious allegations. According to them, rangers allegedly beat, waterboarded and raped locals to keep them out of their ancestral forest, now a conservation area. African Parks did order a review. However, the full report has not been shared publicly. Instead, a brief statement confirmed that abuse had taken place in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. It gave no specific details. Also Read | Prince Harry interview: King Charles 'upset' as Duke fails to respect principle UK law firm Omnia Strategy LLP led an investigation into abuse claims at Odzala-Kokoua Park. However, it shared findings only with African Parks, not the public. This raised concerns over transparency. Omnia's statement confirmed the probe had begun in December 2023 but gave no details. The BBC asked both Omnia and involved barristers for the report, but they refused to comment. African Parks Survival International told the BBC that African Parks had promised more reports, staff and rules. Nevertheless, these steps have not stopped serious human rights abuses over the past decade. “There is no reason to believe they will do so now,” it told the publication. It said African Parks had known about these problems since 2013. African Parks said they tried to contact Survival for more details when the claims came out in 2024. African Parks said they had improved their safety steps over the last five years, especially in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. It added an anthropologist to support Baka communities and partnered with local human rights groups. It also promised to do an independent human rights check. Survival has criticised African Parks for not sharing the results of their investigation. It has also informed Prince Harry about the reported abuse of the Baka people. This adds to the list of disturbing news connected to Prince Harry in recent times. Another African charity, helmed by the Duke, has been in trouble. Prince Harry earlier left Sentebale, an African charity he co-founded, after a serious clash with chair Sophie Chandauka. Issues include racism, bullying, mismanagement and finances. Other trustees also resigned. An investigation is ongoing. MENAFN09052025007365015876ID1109527521 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind.
