      • "content": "Stage Director Hemantha Prasad is making a return to stage directing with his latest play, Sellanda Kollo, which will be performed at Elphinstone Theatre on April 2 at 3:30 and 6:30 pm.Prasad, who began his artistic journey in the 1990s, has built a diverse career as an actor, scriptwriter, and director. While many of his contemporaries focused on one or two areas, he expanded his craft across multiple disciplines, proving his versatility. His early years were spent mastering the stage, leading to opportunities in television and film. Reflecting on his journey, he expresses pride in both his professional accomplishments and the fulfilling life he has created through his passion for storytelling.Over the years, Prasad has acted in more than 25 stage plays and directed nearly 20. His contributions to theatre have been recognized with numerous accolades. One of his most celebrated works, Sayonara, based on a Japanese short story by Dr. Ariya Rajakaruna, won eight awards at the Youth Drama Festival in 2000. That same year, he secured the Best Actor award for his role in Anthima Palaweni Kochchiya. His directorial works Rashoman (2002) and Malsara Bisau (2004) earned nominations for Best Director and Best Drama at stage drama festivals. Additionally, he won Best Actor at the National Drama Festival in 2007 for Denuwara Dennek.Prasad’s talent has also been recognized internationally. He played the lead role in Children of the Sea, a collaborative production between the British Council and SriLankan Airlines. The play won Best Drama at the Indian Theatre Festival in 2005 and was later selected by the Sri Lankan government for the prestigious Edinburgh Theatre Festival.Despite his success as an actor, Prasad always had a passion for directing. His directorial journey began in 1987 when he staged his first short play, Hansa Vila Kalabei. Over time, he developed his skills in acting, scriptwriting, and directing, ultimately balancing all three disciplines across theatre, television, and film. After two decades away from stage directing, Prasad returns with Sellanda Kollo, his third directorial venture. He credits producer Nirosh Kavirathna for encouraging him to take on this project. While he has been occupied with teledramas and films, including Ula Leni (2019) and the upcoming Goodbye Evil, he felt it was the right time to return to the stage.Sellanda Kollo is categorized as a comedy, but Prasad emphasizes that it avoids low-quality humor. Instead, it presents an engaging story that leaves the audience with something to reflect upon. The play features a talented cast, including Jayanath Bandara, Praba Sandasheeli, Sanjeewa Upendra, Suneth Priya, Ovin Bandara, Shani Thenuwara, Tishani Dissanayake, and Tharindu Wanigasooriya. The production team boasts experts such as M. Safir (production management and set design), Prem Jayantha Kapuge (composition), Bhanu Karunanayake (costume design), Dinith Abhishek (music), Ranga Kariyawasam (lighting), and stage managers Nirmal Perera, Dhammika Hettige, and Sashi Harshana. As he prepares to stage Sellanda Kollo, Prasad acknowledges the importance of the encouragement he received from his collaborators and supporters. He invites audiences to experience the play firsthand and enjoy a night of meaningful entertainment. The post Hemantha Prasad Returns to the Stage with ‘Sellanda Kollo’ appeared first on DailyNews.",

      • "content": "Dua Lipa has won the dismissal of a lawsuit that accused her of copying her hit single Levitating from two other songs. The star was sued in 2022 by songwriters L Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer, who accused her of plagiarising their 1979 disco track Wiggle and Giggle All Night and 1980’s Don Diablo. On Thursday, US Judge Katherine Polk Failla ruled that the songs only had generic similarities, including non-copyrightable musical elements that had also previously been used by Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the Bee Gees in their song Stayin’ Alive. It is the second time that Lipa has won a plagiarism case over Levitating, which was a global hit in 2020. She was previously sued by Florida reggae band Artikal Sound System, who claimed Lipa ripped off the chorus for her song from their 2015 track Live Your Life. Their case was dropped in 2023 after a judge ruled there was no evidence that Lipa and her co-writers had “access” to the earlier song – a key requirement in any copyright lawsuit. However, she is still facing a third legal challenge over the song, from musician Bosko Kante – a featured artist on Levitating, who sang vocals through a talk box. He sued in 2023, saying his contribution had been used on remixes of the song without permission. Kante is seeking damages of at least $2m (ÂŁ1.5m) plus interest, as well as profits from the remixes, which he estimated as being at least $20m (ÂŁ15m). Brown and Linzer’s case alleged that Lipa stole the opening melody of Levitating, where she sings: “If you wanna run away with me, I know a galaxy and I can take you for a ride.” They called the melody and phrasing a “duplicate” of their own songs. But Judge Failla wrote that the elements were too common to be protected by law. “The court finds that a musical style, defined by plaintiffs as ‘pop with a disco feel,’ and a musical function, defined by plaintiffs to include ‘entertainment and dancing,’ cannot possibly be protectable,” the judge wrote. “To hold otherwise would be to completely foreclose the further development of music in that genre or for that purpose.” By coincidence, the ruling came on the fifth anniversary of Levitating’s release, initially as an album track on Lipa’s award-winning album Future Nostalgia. In a statement to music industry publication Billboard, lawyers for Brown and Linzer said they “respectfully disagreed” with the decision and would file an appeal. The BBC has contacted Dua Lipa for a response.",
