      • "content": "WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Sunday (Mar 30) he was \"very angry\" with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, NBC reported, marking a sharp change of tone as Washington seeks to end the war in Ukraine. NBC's Kristen Welker said Trump had called her to express his fury over Putin questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's future as a leader , something that Trump himself has done. Welker, on her NBC show \"Meet The Press\" on Sunday, quoted directly from an early-morning telephone conversation with the president. \"If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia's fault... I am going to put secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia,\" Trump said. Trump told Welker that he \"was very angry\" over Putin's recent comments about Zelenskyy's credibility and talking about new leadership in Ukraine. The US president has been pushing for a speedy end to the more than three-year war since taking office, but his administration has failed to reach a breakthrough despite negotiations with both sides. Putin rejected a joint US-Ukrainian plan for a 30-day ceasefire, and on Friday suggested Zelenskyy be removed from office as part of the peace process. Trump told NBC that Putin knows he is angry, but said that he has \"a very good relationship with him\" and \"the anger dissipates quickly... if he does the right thing.\" Russia bolstered Warming ties between Washington and Moscow since Trump's return to office and his threats to stop supporting Kyiv have bolstered Russia on the battlefield as it pursues its floundering invasion. Ukraine has accused Russia of dragging out talks with no intention of halting its offensive, with fresh attacks on the northeastern border city of Kharkiv. Six strikes hit overnight Saturday into Sunday, wounding personnel undergoing treatment at a military hospital and killing at least two people in a residential building, according to Ukrainian officials. Russian forces also captured a village just seven kilometers from the border of Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region in their latest advance, Moscow said Sunday. The Kremlin's troops have not crossed the boundary of the region since their offensive began in 2022, but they have been grinding towards it for months in the hope of a breakthrough. No ceasefire Putin, in power for 25 years and repeatedly elected in votes with no competition, has often questioned Zelenskyy's \"legitimacy\" as president, after the Ukrainian leader's initial five-year mandate ended in May 2024. Under Ukrainian law, elections are suspended during times of major military conflict, and Zelenskyy's domestic opponents have all said no ballots should be held until after the conflict. Trump has himself had rocky relations with Zelenskyy, calling him a \"dictator\" and clashing with him live on camera at the White House last month. Zelenskyy, in his evening address on Saturday, sought to rally his country's allies against Putin. \"For too long now, America's proposal for an unconditional ceasefire has been on the table without an adequate response from Russia,\" Zelenskyy said. \"There could already be a ceasefire if there was real pressure on Russia,\" he added, thanking those countries \"who understand this\" and have stepped up sanctions pressure on the Kremlin. Both Moscow and Kyiv agreed to the concept of a Black Sea truce following talks with US officials earlier this week, but Russia said the deal would not enter into force until Ukraine's allies lifted certain sanctions. Explaining the secondary tariffs threat, Trump told NBC it would make it such that \"if you buy oil from Russia, you can't do business in the United States.\" \"There will be a 25 percent tariff on all oil, a 25 to 50 point tariff on all oil,\" he said, without giving further details.",

      • "content": "BERLIN (Reuters): Europe wants to cooperate with the United States but the EU is ready to respond as one if Washington leaves it no choice by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday. Speaking at the opening of the Hanover industrial trade fair which this year has Canada as its partner country, Scholz also insisted that Canada is an independent country. U.S. President Donald Trump has mused about annexing Canada and referred to the country as the 51st U.S. state. “We stand by your side!” Scholz said, adding: “Canada is not a state that belongs to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation.” Addressing Trump’s plans to introduce tariffs, Scholz said his answer to “my country first” policies was more free trade, greater competitiveness and more technological sovereignty. Scholz argued that Europe was not naive but also not weak, and said trade wars hurt all sides. “So I say to the United States: Europe’s goal remains cooperation. But if the U.S. leaves us no choice, such as with the tariffs on steel and aluminium, we as the EU will react as one”.",

      • "content": "NIAMEY (Reuters): Niger has quit an international force fighting armed Islamist groups in West Africa’s Lake Chad region as it seeks to shore up security around oil assets at home, the government said in a bulletin on state television. The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which also includes soldiers from Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon, has been working to stem the insurgency since 2015, but progress has been hobbled by division and poor coordination, allowing armed groups to flourish across the region’s sparsely populated scrublands. MNJTF has yet to comment on Niger’s withdrawal, and it is unclear how the step will affect the mission’s future. The Lake Chad region has been repeatedly attacked by militant groups, including Islamic State in West Africa and Boko Haram, whose insurgency erupted in northeast Nigeria in 2009 and has killed tens of thousands of people. Last year, Chad threatened to pull out of the MNJTF after about 40 soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base. And Niger has become increasingly withdrawn since a military junta overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum in 2023. Along with Burkina Faso and Mali – neighbouring states where juntas also snatched power in recent years – it withdrew from regional bloc the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2024. Niger’s junta, which last week announced a five-year transition to constitutional rule, has promised to restore security in the country, whose vast desert north is crossed by migrants and traffickers. But the army has little control over large parts of the country. Islamist militants killed at least 44 civilians and severely injured 13 others during an attack on a mosque in the southwest this month. Its energy infrastructure, including an oil pipeline that links the Agadem oilfield to Benin’s coast, has come under attack.",

      • "content": "U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he would impose secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on Russian oil if Moscow blocks efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Trump stated that these tariffs could start within a month unless there is a ceasefire. He emphasized his anger after Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s leadership and suggested undermining Zelenskiy’s position. Trump, in a phone interview, expressed his frustration with Putin and vowed to discuss the situation with him this week. He has repeatedly promised during his 2024 presidential campaign to end what he calls the “ridiculous” war in Ukraine. Trump has also called for new elections in Ukraine and criticized Zelenskiy, labeling him a dictator. Trump’s remarks underscore his hardline stance toward Russia and his desire to use economic pressure to force a resolution to the war. Putin recently suggested Ukraine could be temporarily administered for new elections and key agreements, potentially sidelining Zelenskiy. Trump stated that if a deal to end the war was not reached, he would impose tariffs on Russian oil. He made it clear that anyone buying Russian oil would be banned from doing business in the U.S. Trump’s decision to target Russian oil is part of his broader strategy to curb Russian influence and pressure Putin into ceasing military actions in Ukraine. Trump mentioned that while Putin knows he is angry, they have a “very good relationship.” He added that the anger would “dissipate quickly” if Putin takes the right actions to end the conflict. Trump’s statement signals his willingness to take aggressive measures against Russia, highlighting his focus on resolving the Ukraine crisis during his campaign.",

      • "content": "Morgan Wallen is facing fresh backlash after abruptly walking off the Saturday Night Live stage during the closing credits, sparking criticism from fans and speculation about his behavior. The country singer, who performed as the musical guest on this weekend’s episode hosted by actress Mikey Madison, exited the stage moments after the show wrapped without engaging with the cast — a move many deemed disrespectful. Wallen briefly hugged Madison before heading straight down the center aisle, skipping the usual mingling with the SNL cast during the goodnight segment. Just moments later, he posted a photo of a private jet on Instagram with the caption, “Get me to God’s country,” leading fans to believe he skipped the traditional afterparty as well. Social media erupted with criticism over the unexpected exit. One viewer on X wrote, “That was the strangest SNL ending credits I’ve ever seen,” while others called Wallen “petty” and “unprofessional.” Some even predicted he would never be invited back to the show. A source close to Wallen told TMZ the departure was not intentional and mirrored his routine from rehearsals throughout the week. The insider said the singer “entered and exited the studio the same way during rehearsal and camera blocking,” and didn’t mean to stir controversy. Page Six reached out to representatives for SNL and Wallen but did not receive immediate responses. Wallen, 31, has been involved in several controversies in recent years, including being dropped from a 2020 SNL performance due to COVID protocol violations and facing backlash in 2021 for using a racial slur on video. The Grammy-nominated artist has also had multiple arrests for public intoxication and reckless behavior. Despite the backlash, Wallen has maintained a large fanbase, though critics say his latest move may further damage his standing in mainstream entertainment circles. • "content": "At least 1,700 killed in Myanmar as aftershocks rattle Mandalay True scale of disaster remains unclear in military-ruled state, and toll is expected to rise significantly MANDALAY: Residents scoured collapsed buildings on Sunday searching for survivors as aftershocks rattled the devastated city of Mandalay, two days after a massive earthquake killed at least 1,700 people in Myanmar and at least 18 in neighbouring Thailand. The initial 7.7-magnitude quake struck near the central Myanmar city of Mandalay early Friday afternoon, followed minutes later by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. The tremors collapsed buildings, downed bridges and buckled roads, with mass destruction seen in the city of more than 1.7 million people. Tea shop owner Win Lwin picked his way through the remains of a collapsed restaurant on a main road in his neighbourhood early on Sunday, tossing bricks aside one by one. \"About seven people died here\" when the quake struck, he told AFP . \"I'm looking for more bodies but I know there cannot be any survivors.\" About an hour later, a small aftershock struck, sending people scurrying out of a hotel for safety, following a similar tremor felt late Saturday evening. And around 2:00 pm (0730 GMT), another aftershock — of 5.1-magnitude according to the US Geological Survey — sent people into the streets in alarm once again, temporarily halting rescue work. The night before, rescuers had pulled a woman out alive from the wreckage of a collapsed apartment building, with applause ringing out as she was carried by stretcher to an ambulance. Myanmar's ruling junta said in a statement Sunday afternoon that about 1,700 people were confirmed dead so far, about 3,400 injured and around 300 more missing. But the true scale of the disaster remains unclear in the isolated military-ruled state, and the toll is expected to rise significantly. At a destroyed Buddhist examination hall in Mandalay, Myanmar and Chinese responders worked to find buried victims on Sunday. So far, 21 people have been rescued while 13 bodies have been recovered, but at least two more people were still believed alive in the rubble, rescuers said. San Nwe Aye, sister of a 46-year-old monk missing in the collapsed hall, appeared in deep distress, and told AFP she has heard no news about his status. \"I want to hear the sound of him preaching,\" she said. \"The whole village looked up to him.\" Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing issued an exceptionally rare appeal for international aid on Friday, indicating the severity of the calamity. Previous military governments have shunned foreign assistance, even after major natural disasters. Myanmar has already been ravaged by four years of civil war sparked by a military coup in 2021. Reports have emerged of sporadic fighting even after the quake, with one rebel group telling AFP on Sunday that seven of its fighters were killed in an aerial attack soon after the tremors hit. Anti-junta fighters in the country have declared a two-week partial ceasefire in quake-affected regions starting Sunday, the shadow \"National Unity Government\" said in a statement. The UN said overnight that a severe lack of medical equipment is hindering Myanmar's response to the quake, while aid agencies have warned that the country is unprepared to deal with a disaster of this magnitude. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on Sunday launched an emergency appeal for more than $100 million to help victims. Some 3.5 million people were displaced by the raging civil war, many at risk of hunger, even before the quake struck. Rescue teams and aid have been arriving from donor countries around the world, with Thailand on Sunday dispatching 55 military personnel and six rescue dogs, along with equipment including cranes and diggers. Across the border in Thailand, rescuers in Bangkok worked on Sunday to pluck out survivors trapped when a 30-storey skyscraper under construction collapsed after the Friday earthquake. At least 18 people have been killed in the Thai capital, city authorities said late Sunday afternoon, with 33 injured and 78 still missing. Most of the deaths were workers killed in the tower collapse, while most of the missing are believed to be trapped under the immense pile of debris where the skyscraper once stood. The shock of the moment made 22-year-old survivor, Burmese worker Kyaw Lin Htet, feel like he \"lost consciousness\". \"I never expected this would happen to me as we only see this on TV,\" he told AFP at the site on Sunday. Sniffer dogs and thermal imaging drones have also been deployed to seek signs of life in the collapsed building, close to the Chatuchak weekend market popular among tourists. Authorities said engineers would be assessing and repairing the 165 damaged buildings around the city on Sunday.",

NBC’s Kristen Welker said Trump had called her to express his anger over Putin questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ́s future as a leader — something that Trump himself has done. Welker, on her NBC show \"Meet The Press\" on Sunday, quoted directly from an early-morning telephone conversation with the president. Trump said that \"if Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault\" then he would impose \"secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia.\" Welker said Trump told her \"I was very angry, pissed off\" when Putin started making comments about Zelensky’s credibility and talking about new leadership in Ukraine. Trump has been pushing for a speedy end to the more than three-year war since taking office, but his administration has failed to reach a breakthrough despite talks with both sides. Putin rejected a joint US-Ukrainian plan for a 30-day ceasefire, and on Friday suggested Zelensky be removed from office as part of the peace process, further toughening Moscow’s negotiating position",

      • "content": "BANGKOK: A unilateral partial ceasefire to facilitate earthquake relief efforts was announced on Saturday by Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government, which coordinates the popular struggle against the ruling military. The country’s death toll from the disaster soared to 1,644. The figure was a sharp rise compared to the 1,002 announced just hours earlier, highlighting the difficulty of confirming casualties over a widespread region and the likelihood that the numbers will continue to grow from Friday’s 7.7 magnitude quake. The number of injured increased to 3,408, while the missing figure rose to 139. THE NUMBER OF DEAD ALSO RISES IN THAILAND In neighboring Thailand, the death toll rose to 17. The quake rocked the greater Bangkok area, home to around 17 million people, and other parts of the country. Many places in the north reported damage, but the only casualties were reported in Bangkok. Of the death toll, 10 were killed in the high rise building near famous Chatuchak market that collapsed, while the rest were killed in seven other sites. Authorities in Bangkok said 83 people were unaccounted for. On Saturday, more heavy equipment was brought in to move the tons of rubble, but hope was fading among friends and relatives. “I was praying that that they had survived, but when I got here and saw the ruin — where could they be? said 45-year-old Naruemol Thonglek, sobbing as she awaited news about her partner, who is from Myanmar, and five friends who worked at the site. AID EFFORTS IN MYANMAR HINDERED BY DAMAGE TO AIRPORTS In Myanmar, rescue efforts so far are focused on the major stricken cities of Mandalay, the country’s No. 2 city, and Naypyitaw, the capital. But even though teams and equipment have been flown in from other nations, they are hindered by damage to airports. Satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC analyzed by The Associated Press show that the earthquake toppled the air traffic control tower at Naypyitaw International Airport as if sheered from its base. It wasn’t immediately clear if there had been any casualties from its collapse. MYANMAR’S CIVIL WAR ALSO AN OBSTACLE Another major complication is the civil war roiling much of the country, including the quake-affected areas. In 2021, the military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking what has since turned into significant armed resistance. Government forces have lost control of much of Myanmar, and many places are incredibly dangerous or simply impossible for aid groups to reach. More than 3 million people have been displaced by the fighting and nearly 20 million are in need, according to the United Nations. The interplay of politics and disaster was demonstrated Saturday night, when Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government announced a unilateral partial ceasefire to facilitate earthquake relief efforts. It said its armed wing, the People’s Defense Force, will implement a two-week pause in offensive military operations starting Sunday in earthquake-affected areas and it would also collaborate with the UN and international nongovernmental organizations “to ensure security, transportation, and the establishment of temporary rescue and medical camps,” in the areas it controls. The resistance organization said it reserved the right to fight back in defense if attacked. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN CITIES The earthquake struck midday Friday with an epicenter not far from Mandalay, followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 6.4. It sent buildings in many areas toppling to the ground, buckled roads and caused bridges to collapse. In Naypyitaw, crews worked Saturday to repair damaged roads, while electricity, phone and Internet services remained down for most of the city. The earthquake brought down many buildings, including multiple units that housed government civil servants, but that section of the city was blocked off by authorities on Saturday. An initial report on earthquake relief efforts issued Saturday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that it’s allocating $5 million from a Central Emergency Response Fund for “life-saving assistance.” The immediate planned measures include a convoy of 17 cargo trucks carrying critical shelter and medical supplies from China that is expected to arrive on Sunday, it said. It noted the severe damage or destruction of many health facilities, and warned of a “severe shortage of medical supplies is hampering response efforts, including trauma kits, blood bags, anaesthetics, assistive devices, essential medicines, and tents for health workers.” ALLIES BRINGING IN RESCUE CREWS AND RELIEF MATERIALS Myanmar’s friends and neighbors have already brought in rescue personnel and relief materials. China and Russia are the largest suppliers of weapons to Myanmar’s military, and were among the first to step in with humanitarian aid. In a country where prior governments sometimes have been slow to accept foreign aid, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, head of the military government, said that Myanmar was ready to accept outside assistance. China said it has sent more than 135 rescue personnel and experts along with supplies like medical kits and generators, and pledged around $13.8 million in emergency aid. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said that it had flown in 120 rescuers and supplies, and the country’s Health Ministry said Moscow had sent a medical team to Myanmar. Other countries like India, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore are also sending help, and US President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington was going to help with the response. The ceasefire plan announced by the opposition National Unity Government also proposed to provide health care professionals loyal to its resistance movement to work with international humanitarian organizations to deliver emergency rescue and medical services in areas under the military’s control, if provided with safety guarantees. The military has heavily restricted much-needed aid efforts to the large population already displaced by war even before the earthquake. Sympathizers of the resistance have urged that relief efforts incorporate aid freely transported to areas under the control of the resistance, so it can’t be weaponized by the army. There was no immediate comment by the military to the announcement. Military forces continued their attacks even after the quake, with three airstrikes in northern Kayin state, also called Karenni state, and southern Shan — both of which border Mandalay state, said Dave Eubank, a former US Army Special Forces soldier who founded the Free Burma Rangers, a private aid organization. Eubank told the AP that in the area he was operating in, most villages have already been destroyed by the military so the earthquake had little impact. “People are in the jungle and I was out in the jungle when the earthquake hit — it was powerful, but the trees just moved, that was it for us, so we haven’t had a direct impact other than that the Burma army keeps attacking, even after the quake,” he said. Earthquakes are rare in Bangkok, but relatively common in Myanmar. The country sits on the Sagaing Fault, a major north-south fault that separates the India plate and the Sunda plate. Brian Baptie, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey, said that the quake caused intense ground shaking in an area where most of the population lives in buildings constructed of timber and unreinforced brick masonry. “When you have a large earthquake in an area where there are over a million people, many of them living in vulnerable buildings, the consequences can often be disastrous,” he said in a statement.",

      • "content": "SEOUL: South Korea, China and Japan agreed to expand trade cooperation on Sunday, ahead of US President Donald Trump’s plans to impose reciprocal tariffs. South Korean Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun met with Japanese Trade Minister Yoji Muto and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Seoul for the first trilateral meeting among the three countries since 2019. They agreed to speed up negotiations toward a trilateral free trade agreement, which have not progressed since talks first began in 2012. “We will continue discussions to accelerate trilateral FTA negotiations with the goal of realizing a fair, comprehensive and high-quality FTA that is mutually beneficial,” the ministers said in a joint statement issued after the meeting. Ahn said cooperation among the three countries was necessary amid “the rapidly changing global economic and trade” environment. “There is a need for the three countries to cooperate on the basis of mutual respect and trust, in order to create a more stable environment for global trade and investment,” Ahn said during his opening remarks at the meeting. Ahn and his counterparts also agreed to strengthen the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a trade framework among 15 Asia-Pacific countries aimed at lowering trade barriers, and to expand collaboration in rising industries, including renewable energy and digital transformation. Sunday’s trilateral meet comes ahead of Trump’s expected announcement of “reciprocal tariffs” on April 2. US officials have previously cited China and South Korea as countries with whom Washington has had “persistent trade deficits.” On Wednesday, Trump unveiled a 25 percent tariff on all cars and auto parts shipped to the US that is set to take effect on April 3. The move could deal a heavy blow to South Korea and Japan’s economies, which rely on auto exports to the North American country. After Mexico, South Korea is the world’s largest exporter of vehicles to the US, followed by Japan, according to data from S&P. “South Korea and Japan in particular are trying to decrease pressures from the US by increasing trade volume with China and Japan,” Park Duck-bae, an economics adjunct professor at Sungkyunkwan University, told Arab News. “Since they are all facing similar threats from the US, they are getting together to pool their response to the US tariff policies.” By increasing cooperation with South Korea and Japan, Beijing will be able to strengthen its position in the region, said Moon Heung-ho, an expert on China and honorary professor at the Graduate School of International Studies in Hanyang University. “China is trying to exert its influence in the Middle East and Central Asia, but it is difficult due to the presence of the US and Russia. They are trying to cozy up with their neighbors first ... The fact that the statement stresses norms like multilateralism and free trade is part of China’s strategy to claim the upper hand in its power struggle with the US,” Moon told Arab News. “Increasing cooperation and driving a wedge between the US and its traditional allies, like South Korea and Japan, is an important win for China.” China, Japan and South Korea are among Asia’s five largest economies, with the first two holding the top positions, as per gross domestic product. The three countries make up about 20 percent of the world’s population.",

      • "content": "BANGKOK: Thai and Burmese rescue teams were racing against time on Sunday in a desperate search for survivors, two days after a massive earthquake struck Myanmar and killed more than 1,700 people. The 7.7-magnitude quake hit midday Friday with an epicenter near Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, destroying scores of buildings and cultural sites and damaging other vital infrastructure, including the local airport. The extensive damage in a country ravaged by civil war was hampering relief efforts, as the death toll in Myanmar rose to around 1,700 people on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the ruling junta, with about 3,400 others injured and 300 more missing. “What we’re seeing right now is unexpected, and I cannot imagine what that means for people who are living in those areas,” Marie Manrique, acting head of delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross in Myanmar, said in a video statement. Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyidaw and Bago are the hardest-hit areas, she said, but impacts of the earthquakes were also felt in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon. “Many people in the city of Yangon ... have not had electricity or running water since the day of the earthquake. So that just gives us a good impression on what the situation is on ground zero in Mandalay and Sagaing,” she said. Local news outlet Myanmar Now said that crematoriums in Mandalay were “struggling to cope” due to a surge in fatalities. “Major cemeteries ... are overwhelmed, with bodies piling up as families seek to cremate their deceased,” a report from the publication reads. Foreign aid and international rescue teams have started arriving in Myanmar after the military issued a rare plea for help as the nation grappled with the deadliest natural disaster to hit the country in years. In neighboring Thailand, authorities said the tremors had killed at least 18 people, with videos posted on social media showing water surging from pools atop high-rise hotels and apartments, while one clip showed a dramatic collapse of a 30-story structure that was under construction. At least 10 people died on that site alone, which is near the city’s Chatuchak Park. Bangkok authorities were concentrating their rescue operation on that location, as 78 people remain unaccounted for. “I would like to confirm that we are doing our best because I believe that there is still a chance to find survivors inside,” Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said at a press conference. There is a critical 72-hour window to reach those trapped, with some thought to be meters underground. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said in a statement that the operation is being expedited “by utilizing international tools and experts to scan for vital signs.” The statement read: “The height of the debris is approximately 20 meters, and the tools are capable of accurately scanning positions and relaying information to experts stationed on a crane basket ... The search and rescue operation is now focused on the top, with officers racing against time.” Friday’s earthquake was a shock for Bangkok residents like Paiboon Auengkongkatong, 34, who had never experienced such tremors. “I never experienced this before ... I’ve always stayed in Bangkok my whole life. This is the first time,” he told Arab News. Auengkongkatong was at a restaurant on the seventh floor of the Central Rama 9 mall when the quake hit. With a group of friends, he then began running toward the fire escape. “When we were going down, the building was shaking and the walls were cracking,” he said. “Some stones were falling down; that was really, really scary because I didn’t know if it was going to collapse.”",

      • "content": "JERUSALEM/CAIRO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Sunday (Mar 30) to step up pressure on Hamas in Gaza while continuing negotiations to secure the release of hostages and working to implement US President Donald Trump's \"voluntary emigration\" plan. He said the cabinet had agreed to increase pressure on Hamas, which says it has agreed to a ceasefire proposal from the mediators Egypt and Qatar. Netanyahu rejected assertions that Israel, which has resumed its bombardment of Gaza after a two-month truce and sent troops back into the enclave, was not negotiating, saying \"we are conducting it under fire, and therefore it is also effective\". \"We see that there are suddenly cracks,\" he said in a video statement issued on Sunday. On Saturday, Hamas said it had agreed to a proposal that security sources said included the release of five Israeli hostages each week, but it ruled out laying down its arms as Israel has demanded. On Sunday, the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday, health authorities in Gaza said at least 20 people, including several children, had been killed in Israeli strikes. Nine were killed in a single tent in the southern city of Khan Yunis, they said. Since Israel resumed its attacks in Gaza on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate areas in northern Gaza where they had returned following the ceasefire agreement in January. Netanyahu said Israel was demanding that Hamas lay down its arms and said its leaders would be allowed to leave Gaza. He gave no detail on how long Israeli troops would remain in the enclave but repeated that Hamas' military and government capacities must be crushed. \"We will ensure general security in the Gaza Strip and enable the implementation of the Trump plan, the voluntary emigration plan,\" he said. \"That is the plan, we do not hide it, we are ready to discuss it at any time.\" Trump originally proposed moving the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza to countries including Egypt and Jordan and developing the Gaza Strip as a U.S.-owned resort. However, no country has agreed to take in the population and Israel has since said that any departures by Palestinians would be voluntary. EID IN GAZA Israel launched its campaign in Gaza after a devastating Hamas attack on Israeli communities around the Gaza Strip on Oct 7, 2023 that killed some 1,200 people, according to an Israeli tally, and saw 251 abducted as hostages. The Israeli campaign has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, according to Palestinian health authorities, and devastated much of the coastal enclave leaving hundreds of thousands of people in tents and makeshift shelters. Sunday's strikes took place as Palestinians celebrated the Eid holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. \"We are here to celebrate the rituals of God amid the destruction and the sounds of cannons,\" said Minnatallah Al-Far, in Jabalia, in northern Gaza, where most of the area has been laid waste by Israeli bombardment. \"In Gaza, our situation is very difficult. Other people are celebrating these rituals in peace and safety, but we do them amid destruction and bombardment,\" she said. In Israel, Netanyahu has faced a wave of demonstrations since the military resumed its action in Gaza, with families and supporters of the remaining 59 hostages joining forces with protestors angry at government actions they see as undermining Israeli democracy. On Sunday, he rejected what he described as \"empty claims and slogans\" and said military pressure was the only thing that had returned hostages.",

      • "content": "NEW YORK: More than 600 members have signed an open letter denouncing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “lack of support” for Hamdan Ballal, the Oscar-winning documentarian who was beten and arrested Monday by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank. The letter noted that Academy president Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer “fell far short” with their statement Wednesday, which was apparently emailed to members under the subject line, “Our Global Film Community.” The statement didn’t mention Ballal or his film by name. His 2024 documentary “No Other Land” chronicled the ongoing eviction of Palestinians from their West Bank homes and was co-directed with Basel Adra, a fellow Palestinian, and Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. It won the Oscar for Best Documentary earlier this year. “We stand in condemnation of the brutal assault and unlawful detention of Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal by settlers and Israeli forces in the West Bank,” the letter said at the outset. “As artists, we depend on our ability to tell stories without reprisals.” “Documentary filmmakers often expose themselves to extreme risks to enlighten the world,” it continued. “It is indefensible for an organization to recognize a film with an award in the first week of March, and then fail to defend its filmmakers just a few weeks later.” Signatories include actors Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, John Cusack and Susan Sarandon, as well as award-winning directors Alfonso Cuaron and Jonathan Glazer, who condemned Israel’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza during his own Oscars speech in 2024. Ballal was severely beaten Monday by Israeli settlers before the military detained him, two of his fellow directors and other witnesses told The Associated Press, an American news ageny. Ballal told the outlet following his release Tuesday that he was beaten by Israeli soldiers during his captivity. “The targeting of Ballal is not just an attack on one filmmaker — it is an attack on all those who dare to bear witness and tell inconvenient truths,” the open letter stated. “We will continue to watch over this film team ... and we will not mince words when the safety of a fellow artist is at stake.” The academy members say the organization sent a statement on Wednesday with the subject line “Our Global Film Community.” “Understandably, we are often asked to speak on behalf of the Academy in response to social, political, and economic events,” the Academy said. “In these instances, it is important to note that the Academy represents close to 11,000 global members with many unique viewpoints.” “We are, however, united in a shared belief in the importance of storytelling, in the value of empathy, and in the role of film as a catalyst,” the organization added. However, many academy members believed that the statement “failed to mention either Ballal or the film by name, nor did it describe the events it was responding to. “The statement by Bill Kramer and Janet Yang fell far short of the sentiments this moment calls for,” the statement read. “Therefore, we are issuing our own statement, which speaks for the undersigned members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.” Late Friday, the academy said that Kramer and Yang expressed regret for failing to “Ballal and the film by name.” “We sincerely apologize to Mr. Ballal and all artists who felt unsupported by our previous statement and want to make it clear that the Academy condemns violence of this kind anywhere in the world. We abhor the suppression of free speech under any circumstances,” they wrote in a letter to members.",

      • "content": "The Taliban leader said Sunday there was no need for Western laws in Afghanistan and that democracy was dead as long as sharia laws are in effect. Hibatullah Akhundzada made the comments in a sermon marking the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Fitr, in the southern city of Kandahar’s Eidgah Mosque. The 50-minute audio of his message was published on X by the Taliban government’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. “There is no need for laws that originate from the West. We will create our own laws,” Akhundzada said, speaking in Pashto, while emphasizing the importance of Islamic laws. The Taliban’s interpretation of sharia has led to bans on Afghan women and girls, who have been excluded them from education, many jobs and most public spaces. Such measures have isolated the Taliban on the world stage, although they have established diplomatic ties with countries including China and the United Arab Emirates. Akhundzada has taken a stronger hand in directing policy since the Taliban seized control of the country in 2021, despite some officials initially promising a more moderate rule. Akhundzada on Sunday criticized the West, saying non-believers had united against Muslims and that the US and others were united in their hostility toward Islam, citing the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Democracy had come to an end in Afghanistan and sharia was in effect, he said, adding that supporters of democracy were trying to separate the people from the Taliban government. The Taliban have no credible opposition inside or outside the country, but some senior figures within the administration have criticized the leadership’s decision-making process and concentration of power in Akhundzada’s circle. Some Taliban want greater engagement with the international community and scrapping harsher policies to attract more outside support. In recent months, however, there has been increased engagement between the Taliban and the US under President Donald Trump, mostly because of prisoner exchanges and releases.",

      • "description": "Trump withdrew the US from 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which limited Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for relief",
      • "content": "US President Donald Trump threatened Iran on Sunday with bombing and secondary tariffs if Tehran did not come to an agreement with Washington over its nuclear program. In Trump's first remarks since Iran rejected direct negotiations with Washington last week, he told NBC News that US and Iranian officials were talking, but did not elaborate. \"If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing,\" Trump said in a telephone interview. \"It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before.\" \"There's a chance that if they don't make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago,\" he added. Iran sent a response through Oman to a letter from Trump urging Tehran to reach a new nuclear deal, saying its policy was to not engage in direct negotiations with the United States while under its maximum pressure campaign and military threats, Tehran's foreign minister was quoted as saying on Thursday. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated the policy on Sunday. \"Direct negotiations (with the US) have been rejected, but Iran has always been involved in indirect negotiations, and now too, the Supreme Leader has emphasized that indirect negotiations can still continue,\" he said, referring to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the NBC interview, Trump also threatened so-called secondary tariffs, which affect buyers of a country's goods, on both Russia and Iran. He signed an executive order last week authorizing such tariffs on buyers of Venezuelan oil. Trump did not elaborate on those potential tariffs. In his first 2017-21 term, Trump withdrew the US from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that placed strict limits on Tehran's disputed nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump also reimposed sweeping US sanctions. Since then, the Islamic Republic has far surpassed the agreed limits in its escalating program of uranium enrichment. Tehran has so far rebuffed Trump's warning to make a deal or face military consequences. Western powers accuse Iran of having a clandestine agenda to develop nuclear weapons capability by enriching uranium to a high level of fissile purity, above what they say is justifiable for a civilian atomic energy program. Tehran says its nuclear program is wholly for civilian energy purposes. COMMENTS Comments are moderated and generally will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive. • "content": "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel’s intensified military pressure on Hamas in Gaza has been effective, stressing the Palestinian group must lay down its arms. “We are negotiating under fire... We can see cracks beginning to appear” in what the group demanded in its negotiations, Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting. Netanyahu’s remarks came as mediators — Egypt, Qatar, and the United States — continued efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. A senior Hamas official stated on Saturday that the group had approved a new ceasefire proposal put forward by mediators and urged Israel to support it. Netanyahu’s office confirmed receipt of the proposal and said Israel had submitted a counterproposal. However, the details of the latest mediation efforts remain undisclosed. On Sunday, Netanyahu rejected claims Israel was not interested in discussing a deal that would secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza, but insisted Hamas must surrender its weapons. “We are willing. Hamas must lay down its arms... Its leaders will be allowed to leave” from Gaza, he said. He said that Israel would ensure overall security in Gaza and “enable the implementation of the Trump plan — the voluntary migration plan”. Days after taking office, US President Donald Trump had announced a plan that would relocate Gaza’s more than two million inhabitants to neighbouring Egypt and Jordan. His announcement was slammed by much of the international community. A fragile truce that had provided weeks of relative calm in the Gaza Strip collapsed on March 18 when Israel resumed its aerial bombardment and ground offensive in the Palestinian territory. On Sunday, an Israeli air strike killed at least eight people in Gaza’s Khan Yunis area, including five children, the territory’s civil defence agency reported.",

      • "content": "Inside a shelter in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, Palestinian women are preparing Kaak, traditional Eid cookies, in hopes of lifting their children’s spirits, despite the ongoing Israeli military offensive that resumed on March 18, 2025. Amid deep grief, destruction, and the loss of homes and loved ones, the women are working to provide their children with even the smallest moments of joy, trying to shield them from the hardship caused by Israel’s continued closure of border crossings. This year, Eid al-Fitr, a festival of breaking the fast at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, arrives in Gaza under severe humanitarian and economic strain, as Israeli attacks intensify. Eid al-Fitr is the first of the two main festivals in Islam, the other being Eid al-Adha. Since March 2, 2025, Israel has enforced a full blockade on the Gaza Strip by shutting all crossings and preventing the entry of humanitarian, medical, and relief aid. Markets are nearly empty, and the cost of remaining goods has surged, making it nearly impossible for Palestinians, impoverished by the war, to meet basic needs. Commissioner chairs review meeting Last week, the Gaza Government Media Office said the territory has entered the first phase of famine due to the continued blockade and the obstruction of life-saving aid. Determination to live In a display of resilience, Kawthar Hussein sits beside an earthen oven in the corner of the shelter, trying to ignite a fire to bake Eid cookies while Israeli artillery shells nearby areas of the Gaza Strip. With no access to cooking gas because of the blockade, the women are using cardboard and wood to cook, a process that is both time-consuming and exhausting. Ignoring the smoke, Hussein carefully places cookies on trays to begin baking. She said: \"The atmosphere here is very sad. We have lost many relatives and loved ones, and we are suffering from a major humanitarian crisis.\" “We are a people who love life. We don't want our children to live in deprivation. We try to provide them with everything we can, even if it's little,” she told Anadolu. District govt active against high meat prices Before the war, she would prepare about 9 kilograms (19.8 pounds) of cookies during Eid. This year, she is making only one kilogram (2.2 pounds), hoping to bring some comfort to children affected by the war. Although grief surrounds them, she believes celebrating Eid remains one of \"God’s rituals that should be revived.\" Joy amid war Umm Mohammed, another Palestinian woman, is also trying to give her children and grandchildren a sense of Eid by making cookies for them. She told Anadolu: \"We managed to make a little bit of cookies to compensate the children for what they have lost from the Eid rituals during the genocide.\" “Sadness surrounds the children. We try to make them happy by giving them one cookie each, and that is all we can provide,” she added. On March 18, the Israeli army launched a surprise aerial attack on Gaza, killing 896 people and injuring nearly 2,000, effectively ending the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement. Funeral prayer of ASI Badshah Khan offered at Police Lines HQ Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed more than 50,200 Palestinians — mostly women and children — and injured over 114,000, according to health authorities. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the enclave.",

The IFRC, the world's largest humanitarian network, said the country suffered extensive destruction in Friday's 7.7-magnitude quake near the central city of Mandalay, and needs were growing by the hour. \"To scale up support, the IFRC launches an emergency appeal for 100 million Swiss francs (US$115 million) to assist 100,000 people (20,000 households) with life-saving relief and early recovery support over the next 24 months,\" it said in a statement. With temperatures rising and the monsoon season approaching within weeks, affected communities need stabilising urgently \"before secondary crises emerge\", it said. \"This is not just a disaster; it is a complex humanitarian crisis layered over existing vulnerabilities,\" said Alexander Matheou, the IFRC's Asia Pacific regional director. \"Myanmar continues to face internal displacement and food insecurity. This earthquake exacerbates an already fragile situation. The global community must step forward to support a bold and sustained response.\" The local Myanmar Red Cross Society has mobilised trained volunteers to provide help, launching search and rescue efforts, the statement said. Volunteers have been administering first aid, providing pre-hospital care, distributing emergency relief items such as blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits, and deploying mobile health teams.",

      • "content": "TEHRAN (AFP) : Iranian police have dispersed a weeks-long sit-in by demonstrators supporting the mandatory head covering for women, state media reported, after authorities deemed the gathering illegal. The demonstrators — largely women in black full-body robes — staged the sit-in since last month outside the parliament building in Tehran.Since Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, women have been required to conceal their hair in public. However, increasing numbers, particularly in major cities including the capital Tehran, have pushed the boundaries by allowing the covering to slide back. The protesters were calling for the implementation of a bill imposing tougher penalties on women who refuse to wear the covering, known as a hijab.Parliament approved the bill in September 2023. It triggered heated debate in the country, was not submitted to the government for final approval, and has since been shelved.“After numerous negotiations with the relevant authorities and the protesters, they were requested to disperse and refrain from causing disruption, blocking roads, and creating traffic congestion for citizens,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said late Saturday.“A large number of the protesters complied with the police order and left the area but unfortunately a small number (around 30 individuals) resisted”, Mizan added.Iranian women have also pushed the boundaries by allowing the head covering to slide back © – / AFP/FileIt published a video showing an altercation between the demonstrators and security forces ordering them to leave the area. The official IRNA news agency said the “illegal” sit-in had been in place for around 48 days.Officially known as the “Law on Supporting the Family through the Promotion of the Culture of Chastity and Hijab”, the bill would have imposed tougher penalties on women who refuse to wear the mandatory hijab. It also required significant fines and prison sentences for those deemed to be promoting “nudity” or “indecency”.Parliament passed the bill around a year after mass demonstrations began in Iran triggered by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd. She had been arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.Increasing numbers of women have flouted the law since then.Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani in January said the bill was shelved as it “could have had serious social consequences”.",

      • "content": "India imposes Eid prayer ban on roads drawing criticism \"Policing towards Orwellian 1984,\" says BJP ally Chaudhary Jayant Singh Authorities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) have reportedly enforced a ban on offering Eid ul Fitr prayer on public roads, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders and even some allies of the ruling party. In the city of Meerut, police issued warnings that individuals offering Eid prayers on roads could face legal repercussions, including the potential cancellation of their passports and driving licences, Indian media reported. Meerut's superintendent of police (SP) Ayush Vikram Singh said that strict legal action would be taken against violators, saying: “Instructions have been given that under no circumstances shall namaz be offered on the road.” He further warned that individuals booked under criminal charges may not be able to renew their passports without a court-issued no-objection certificate. Opposition parties strongly criticised the move, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of targeting the Muslim community ahead of Eid. Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan remarked, “Why is the government so troubled by a 10-minute Eid prayer? They go to the UAE and embrace everyone but impose restrictions at home. Since 2014, the government has only sown hatred.” Broadcast media outlet ABP News also questioned the rationale behind the restriction, asking why long religious processions can block roads for weeks while a 15-minute Eid prayer is not tolerated twice a year. Even members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s coalition have expressed disapproval. Chirag Paswan, Minister for Food Processing Industries, said: “I do not agree with this politics. I believe there are bigger issues to address. We should be focusing on those, not constantly talking about Hindu and Muslim.” Union Minister Chaudhary Jayant Singh, a BJP ally, called the police action a sign of authoritarianism, writing on X, “Policing towards Orwellian 1984!” In Sambhal, where tensions have remained high since last November’s violence, officials initially sparked outrage by reportedly banning prayer even on rooftops. After facing backlash, district magistrate Rajendra Pensiya clarified that the restriction applied only to eight to ten dilapidated rooftops in an Archaeological Survey of India-protected zone near the Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid. Meanwhile, police deployed drone cameras and CCTVs to monitor compliance with the directive during Friday prayer. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra said that congregational prayer would be permitted only inside mosques and designated Eidgahs. To prevent overflow onto roads, peace committee members were instructed to redirect worshippers to other locations once a mosque reached 70–80% capacity. Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rehman Barq denounced the restrictions, saying that a person’s terrace was not the property of the government. He questioned: “If a person is not allowed to pray at his residence, where will he go?” Chandra Shekhar Aazad, opposition MP from Bijnor, criticised what he described as a competition among UP police officers “to see who gives more disgusting statements” against Muslims. “The police are not the court. They do not have any right to cancel passports. I think Muslims will have to get permission even to breathe in the coming times,” said Aazad. In the neighbouring state of Haryana, Eid ul Fitr holidays were also cancelled. Assembly member Chaudhary Aftab condemned the decision, noting that the holiday was downgraded from a gazetted to a restricted status due to the end of the financial year. The restrictions have fuelled growing concerns over religious freedom and government overreach, as well as accusations that Muslims are being unfairly targeted under the guise of law and order.",

      • "content": "Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Hungary on April 2, his office said on Sunday, defying an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued over alleged war crimes in Gaza. During his visit, Netanyahu is set to hold talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other senior Hungarian officials before returning to Israel on April 6. Orban extended an invitation to Netanyahu despite the ICC’s arrest warrant issued last year. One day after the ICC decision in November, Netanyahu thanked Orban for his show of “moral clarity” in extending the invitation. Netanyahu’s office at the time published what it said was a letter from Orban in which the Hungarian premier denounced the ICC decision as a “shameful” move. The ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant over allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes — including starvation as a method of warfare — in Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The war was sparked by the militant Palestinian groups attack against Israel on October 7, 2023. Hungary signed the Rome Statute, the international treaty that created the ICC, in 1999 and ratified it two years later during Orban’s first term in office. However, Budapest has not promulgated the associated convention for reasons of constitutionality and therefore asserts it is not obliged to comply with ICC decisions.",

      • "description": "The prime minister said that the contribution reflects Malaysia’s responsibility and solidarity as the 2025 ASEAN chair, adding that he has instructed Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan to lead a humanitarian mission to Myanmar.",
      • "content": "KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will provide RM10 million (US$2.3 million) in humanitarian aid to help those affected by the earthquake in Myanmar, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This comes as 50 members of the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team under Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency departed for Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw on Sunday (Mar 30) morning to assist humanitarian and rescue efforts. Anwar said in a statement on Sunday that the contribution reflects Malaysia’s responsibility and solidarity as the 2025 ASEAN chair, adding that he has instructed Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan to lead a humanitarian mission to Myanmar next week. “This visit aims to show Malaysia’s strong support for the ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operations, including efforts by the National Disaster Management Agency team, which has begun its deployment on the ground today,” he said, as quoted in the Malay Mail. He added that ASEAN’s priority in safeguarding the well-being of people in the region must be translated into swift, effective, and comprehensive action, stressing the bloc’s agenda, rooted in “compassion, shared responsibility, and solidarity”. The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) has launched a coordinated international relief operation in Myanmar, according to the New Straits Times. A delegation from the AHA Centre, led by executive director Lee Yam Ming and director of operations Sithu Pe Thein, arrived in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday evening to collaborate with Myanmar's Department of Disaster Management in supporting regional response efforts. The AHA Centre is also coordinating with other ASEAN nations in the relief operations. It is mobilising ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team members from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam to assist with on-the-ground operations. Anwar said cooperation and collective action among ASEAN nations are crucial in addressing humanitarian crises like this. Malaysia will continue discussions with ASEAN partners to coordinate aid for Myanmar and ensure meaningful impact for those affected, he said, as quoted by the Malay Mail. Singapore’s Civil Defence Force's Operations Lionheart contingent, comprising 80 personnel specialising in logistics, medical, search and rescue, along with four dogs, has also arrived in Myanmar to begin urban search and rescue (USAR) operations, according to a situation update report from the Centre. Teams from Brunei and Indonesia are expected to follow in the coming days. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, severely affecting Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Shan state, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw. Neighbouring Thailand also experienced impacts from the quake. More than 1,600 people were killed in Myanmar, the ruling junta said, with more than 3,400 injured, and at least 139 more missing, according to local media.",

      • "content": "ISTANBUL (AFP): A Swedish journalist who was detained on his arrival in Turkiye to cover protests over the jailing of Istanbul’s mayor has been arrested on terror-related charges and for “insulting the president,” the Turkish presidency said Sunday. Joakim Medin, who works for the Dagens ETC newspaper, “has been arrested on charges of ‘membership in an armed terrorist organization’ and ‘insulting the president’,” the presidency said. Medin was detained on Thursday when his plane landed in Turkiye, and sent to prison the next day. In a bulletin published by its “Disinformation Combat Center,” the presidency said Medin was “known for anti-Turkiye news and his closeness to the terrorist organization PKK,” the banned Kurdish militant group. “This arrest decision has no connection whatsoever to journalistic activities,” it added. The jailing of Medin came just hours after the authorities released the last of 11 journalists arrested in dawn raids on Monday for covering the protests, among them AFP photographer Yasin Akgul. Turkish authorities have also deported BBC journalist Mark Lowen, who had been covering the protests, after holding him for 17 hours on Wednesday, saying he posed “a threat to public order,” the broadcaster said. Turkiye’s communications directorate said Lowen had been deported “due to a lack of accreditation.” Turkish prosecutors had already opened an investigation into Medin in 2023 over a demonstration he joined in Stockholm in which a puppet of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was hung from its feet, according to the presidency’s statement Sunday. It said the Swedish journalist was among 15 suspects believed to have carried out, organized or publicized the demonstration. The protest infuriated Turkish authorities, who alleged it was orchestrated by PKK members and summoned Sweden’s ambassador to Ankara.",

      • "content": "ACCRA, Ghana: Three Chinese nationals are missing after their vessel came under a “suspected pirate attack” off the coast of Ghana, authorities said over the weekend. The apparent kidnapping is the latest in the Gulf of Guinea, an area off the Atlantic coast of Africa whose waters — rich in hydrocarbons and fisheries — stretch across a slew of jurisdictions, including those of countries with limited naval and coast guard capacities. Just before 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, seven armed individuals boarded the Mengxin I vessel in Ghanaian waters and fired warning shots, the Ghanaian military said in a statement. The assailants rounded up members of the crew and sent others into hiding. By the time the attackers departed three hours later, the captain, chief mate and chief engineer — all Chinese nationals — were missing, according to the statement, dated Saturday. They are “suspected of being kidnapped by the attackers,” it said. Ghanaian authorities are sharing information with other members of west African regional bloc ECOWAS, it added. In 2022, a UN Security Council resolution co-sponsored by Ghana and Norway was issued to condemn the spike of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. A study published in 2021 by the Stable Seas research institute found that pirate groups, mostly in the Niger Delta, can earn around $5 million per year through theft and hostage-taking. That same year, a Danish naval patrol killed four pirates in an exchange of fire off the coast of Nigeria.",
