      • "content": "Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned against efforts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, warning that such a development could destabilize the country and throw it into chaos. He issued the warning on Wednesday during a memorial lecture and tribute event in Abuja for the late South-South elder statesman and former federal commissioner for information, Chief Edwin Clark.Jonathan expressed concern over the increasing wave of defections from key opposition parties—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).He noted that these political movements could dangerously tilt Nigeria’s democracy toward a single-party dominance. While referencing Tanzania under Julius Nyerere as a country that once operated a one-party system successfully due to its tribal complexities, Jonathan stressed that such a structure was a product of deliberate and inclusive planning, not manipulation or political desperation.READ MORE:https://www.informationng.com/2025/05/benue-lawmakers-reject-nass-summons-cite-constitutional-breach.htmlAccording to him, “Any attempt or manipulation to impose a one-party system on the nation’s political space will suffocate the country and possibly lead to confusion and anarchy.”He emphasized that if Nigeria ever found itself leaning toward a one-party system, the process must come through due diligence and consensus, rather than political coercion. His remarks come at a time of growing concern over the political imbalance created by mass defections and the weakening of opposition voices.Speaking fondly of the late Edwin Clark, Jonathan described him as a unique and courageous figure, deeply committed to justice and the well-being of Nigeria. He said Clark was irreplaceable, praising his sharp intellect and fearless disposition, which allowed him to speak truth to power without hesitation. The post Nigeria Risks Anarchy If Turned Into One-Party State — Goodluck Jonathan appeared first on Information Nigeria.",

      • "content": "The family of 24-year-old Saheed Shoboyejo, who was murdered two months ago in Osuke community, Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, has accused a retired Commissioner of Police and a church of attempting to sabotage the investigation into his death. During a press briefing in Ikeja, Lagos, the grieving family expressed frustration over what they described as deliberate efforts to obstruct justice. They alleged that the prime suspect in the case has been boasting about his potential release, despite what they claim is substantial evidence linking him to the crime. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier directed that the suspect be transferred from Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Abuja for further investigation. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, also gave assurances that a thorough investigation would be conducted. However, the family raised concerns over the delay in charging the suspect to court. They called on the IGP to ensure the case is not swept under the rug. Speaking on behalf of the family, Olusoji Jinadu said: “We are appealing to the IGP to intervene, as we believe the SIU is facing pressure to release the suspect. Within two weeks of taking over the case, SIU gathered sufficient evidence and assured us that arraignment would follow shortly.” Jinadu also revealed that detectives from SIU visited the murder scene in Lagos and uncovered more leads, including a female police inspector allegedly linked to the suspect. She was invited to Abuja for questioning. “The suspect has been calling people, boasting that he only needs money to secure his release. Both Sango Area Command and Zone 2 already gathered strong evidence for prosecution,” he added. “We also have reliable information that a retired police commissioner and a church the suspect claims to work with are lobbying for his release.” The family has urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that due process is followed and that justice is served by arraigning the suspect in court without further delay.",

      • "content": "Not until 2023 was a different brand of cars from those manufactured in the UK found its way into the official fleet of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In fact, it was at the time of former Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, that a vehicle from another country was introduced into the fleet used by the UK Prime Minister. Even at that, the core vehicle in use for the British Prime Minister remained British-manufactured armoured, custom built Range Rover Sentinel supercharged 5.0 litre V8 models, before a Germany-built armoured Audi A8L model found its way into the fleet. Similarly, The Beast, the secure limousine used by the US President, is manufactured in the United States by General Motors (GM). The chassis of the vehicle is based on a Chevrolet Kodiak truck, also produced by GM, and the vehicle’s design and construction are carried out within the United States. In fact, all the components of The Beast are manufactured in the United States. Apart from that, all other cars in the fleet of the President of the United States are manufactured in America. In France, Emmanuel Macron, the country’s president, uses DS7, an SUV manufactured by a French automaker, DS Automobiles. During his first election in 2017, Macron also used the DS7, an SUV that he renewed in 2021 by adopting a plug-in hybrid version. Five years earlier, his predecessor, François Hollande, had driven down in a DS5, a lower version also manufactured by the same French automaker. If the aforementioned countries are in Europe, what of the neighboring South Africa where President Cyril Ramaphosa currently uses the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro MAX. This vehicle is provided by Chery South Africa and is described as their flagship model. It’s also mentioned that the Tiggo 8 Pro MAX is equipped with Chery’s most powerful engine in South Africa. It is a wholly Indigenous automobile manufactured to suit the presidential taste, also used by almost all government agencies and parastatals. With a price of about $1.5 million for The Beast, it is obvious that injecting the sum into America’s auto market would help the industry and encourage other local manufacturers. In 2022, according to Google, the South African automobile market was valued at an estimated $35.15 billion (R656.09 billion). That value reflected the combined total of local vehicle production, vehicle and component exports, and imports. In 2022, the country produced 555,889 vehicles locally, exported vehicles and components worth $14.21 billion, and imported $11.32 billion worth of vehicles and components, a surplus to the country. DAILY INDEPENDENT gathered that virtually all agencies of government in the former Apartheid country make use of local automobiles. Apart from boosting local economies, using locally-made products creates jobs, ensures economic diversification through development of the economic value chain. It also gives room for expertise and specialisation in a country. This perhaps is the reason President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, days ago, came up with a ‘Nigeria First’ policy. While placing Nigeria first at the peak of public procurement for government agencies and other arms, Tinubu, recently came up with the policy. The policy, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, “puts Nigeria at the centre of every kobo the government spends,” urging for patronage for locally made products first before attempts at purchasing abroad. Idris said the policy places Nigeria at the centre of all public procurement and business activities, with a strong emphasis on empowering local industries and reducing dependency on imports. However, antecedents have shown sharp divides in the president’s supposedly well-thought out policy and his actions, as well as the entire economic outlook under the present administration which has failed to encourage ‘Nigeria First’. It is imperative to say that while the intention of President Tinubu in his ‘Nigeria First’ policy could be right, his actions, administrative pattern have tended to show a leader not intent in his position. While in office, Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari all used Germany-built specially ordered armoured Mercedes-Benz S-Class as official vehicles. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu upped the ante by acquiring a highly expensive armoured black Cadillac Escalade, which goes for a whooping N996 million. According to commentators, such an amount could actually galvanise the local automobile market if injected into it. There are a couple of local auto manufacturers who could be supported to produce highly protected armoured vehicle for the president. Apart from that, in 2023, the Federal Government spent a little above N16 billion to buy cars for the ministers and none of the vehicles were sourced locally. Such a whooping amount into the domestic auto industry would have created a lot of jobs and opened spaces for further developments along the value chain if the vehicles were procured locally. It would have stimulated local production and created a lot of jobs in that line. Also, each of the 109 senators in the National Assembly drives the 2023 model of the Toyota Land Cruiser Sports Utility Vehicles valued at N160 million each as at the time of their purchase, this amounting then to over N27 billion. Similarly, all House of Representatives members drive 2023 Toyota Prado SUVs valued at N130 million each, meaning over N46 billion was spent on foreign economies as the cars were bought abroad, thereby further stifling the local economy. For a struggling economy like Nigeria, that was very callous, uncharitable and inhuman, to say the least. Such money would have made Nigeria number one in automobile production if it was injected into the economy to procure domestic products, with INNOSON Motors, GAC Motors and JAC Motors, among others, readily available to produce high tech vehicles comparable to those sourced abroad. With the current high executive influence in the National Assembly, such an agreement could have been reached to shore up the local economy by going for local products for NASS members. Worse still, according to a report on Premium Times of March 4, 2025, the Senate President has an 11-vehicle fleet, including two bulletproof 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models, five Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, two Toyota Hilux, one ambulance and three police power bikes. Some of the vehicles are valued at over a hundred million naira each. The fleet of the House of Representatives Speaker, the report maintained, is the same. He reportedly uses one bulletproof 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class model, four Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, four Hilux, one Lexus SUV, one ambulance and two police power bikes. Their deputies operate nine-vehicle fleets featuring similarly luxurious automobiles and two police power bikes each. While the emphasis is not on the number of vehicles, the clog is on how the local economy had been starved of support through patronage of foreign exotic cars and the development makes mincemeat of the president’s Nigeria First Policy. It is also instructive to note that apart from automobiles, Nigerian officials, including the president, are not known to patronise local health facilities as they embark on their routine medical checks abroad. Also, due largely to poor health facilities, Nigerians have continued to embark on foreign medical tourism at the expense of local health facilities. Economically, the country under President Tinubu hasn’t given much to encourage investment and deepening of local production of goods. This is despite the much-talked-about policies of the government which are yet to yield results. Given the poor domestic production, there would be continued dependence on foreign goods and services even if the government comes up with an executive order against it. Under the current administration, so many companies have exited the country. Such companies as GlaxoSmithKline, Equinor, a Norwegian subsidiary of Equinor Nigeria Energy Company (ENEC), which is into oil and gas; Sanofi-Aventis Nigeria Limited, a French pharmaceutical company; Procter & Gamble; Bolt Food and Jumia Food, and Kimberly-Clark, as well as others like Microsoft which closed down its Ikoyi office, have all exited the country, citing very inclement business environment. As a result, the country would find it extremely difficult to attract other firms or even encourage domestic ones to produce what could serve the local population. Also, such very bad situations as insecurity and kidnapping have also led to so many companies quitting or considering quitting businesses in Nigeria and if the president should insist on patronage of local production of goods and service, such dampening factors must be addressed. According to a businessman in Alaba, Mr. Anya Ndukwe, the Federal Government should stimulate local industries through tax waivers, energy and other incentives in order to effectively serve the populace. “What President Tinubu has said is right but it doesn’t work just by mere saying,” he told our correspondent. “It is not only about government agencies; every Nigerian should patronise locally made goods and services because it will help the economy but the government has a role to play here. “Situation in the country now doesn’t support the growth of local production and this is where they have to support us by reducing taxes. They should also provide soft loans and make sure electricity is available. We also have insecurity here and there and all these affect local manufacturers,” he said. To most Nigerians, President Tinubu should walk the talk by promoting made-in-Nigeria products. While responding to the president, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticised Tinubu’s Nigeria First Mantra, saying the president should first patronise Innoson Motors or other local auto producers before he would be taking seriously. Atiku, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant, Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said Nigeria deserves real commitment, not this never-ending charade. He noted: “The Tinubu administration’s latest ‘Nigeria First’ mantra, paraded through the Federal Executive Council, is nothing but another tired Public Relations stunt—designed to deceive, not deliver. “Nigerians have grown weary of hollow speeches. If this government is truly serious about local content and economic patriotism, it must start at the very top. “We challenge President Tinubu to stop the noise and trade his beloved Escalade for an Innoson, Nord or any made-in-Nigeria car. “That single act will do more to promote local industry than a thousand policy memos. Let’s see the ministers—those shameless Rolls Royce connoisseurs— sweat it out in Nigerian-made vehicles too. Or is ‘Nigeria First’ only for the masses? He added: “More importantly, the era of jetting off for medical tourism while preaching self-reliance must end. We demand that President Tinubu—champion of Nigeria First—conduct all future medical check-ups at LUTH, National Hospital Abuja, UCH Ibadan, or even the #41 billion Naira Akwa Ibom world-class hospital built by an uncommon transformer, in Uyo. ‘’If these hospitals are good enough for ordinary Nigerians, they should be good enough for their Commander-in-Chief. Anything less is sheer hypocrisy. “This government’s addiction to foreign luxuries while demanding sacrifice from suffering Nigerians is the height of insincerity. True leadership isn’t photo-ops or sound bites—it’s setting the tone by example. Nigeria deserves real commitment, not this never-ending charade,” Atiku said in his challenge to Tinubu on the Nigeria First policy. However, as reported by a national medium, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) and the Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, commended the Federal Government for the Nigeria First policy. According to MAN and NECA, the new policy would enhance local productivity, increase investments, potentially boost GDP by 56 percent and reduce unemployment by 37 percent. In a separate statement on Tuesday, the Director General of MAN, Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir, said that the policy directive would impact on development of local content, which borders on appropriate technical knowledge transfer to Nigerian professionals. Ajayi-Kadir said this initiative was a welcome development in the right direction, adding, “It is a cheering news and long-awaited relief to resilient Nigerian manufacturers, who, despite the tough economic environment, have demonstrated enduring faith in the potential greatness of the Nigerian economy. “We see this initiative as a true and definite demonstration of the government’s commitment to promoting local industries, boosting economic growth, and creating jobs for Nigerians. “By giving preference to locally produced goods and services, we can stimulate demand, increase capacity utilisation, and attract investments into the manufacturing sector.” While reacting, the Director General of NECA, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, said on Tuesday, that the new policy would boost local production and stimulate the economy. Oyerinde stated. “This is a great move, a strategic economic imperative that we’ve been clamouring for. “Over the past few years, we’ve urged the government to prioritise the patronage of made in Nigeria goods, as this will not only promote local production but will fundamentally reduce the pressure on forex demands, stimulate local industrial growth and facilitate job creation and preservation among many others.” He added: “We commend the government for this move and urge a thorough implementation. Without implementation across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the policy could suffer the fate of many like it.” Giving his position on this, Ndume also commended the present administration’s move to ban the importation of foreign goods that could be produced in the country. Ndume said, “It is heartwarming to hear that President Tinubu has taken this bold decision to ban imported goods that can be produced locally. “This will be a major boost for indigenous businesses amid the slipping Nigerian economy. “If implemented faithfully, it will shield our local producers striving to find their feet from being choked out of existence by established foreign investors who flood our market, unhindered, with goods that are cheaper and even substandard. “With protection of local industries, there will be employment for our employable youths, the measure will also boost our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the value of Naira will appreciate. “This is because there will be less strain on our foreign reserves, since the demand for foreign exchange by importers of such foreign goods would drastically reduce.” However, the Petroleum Products Retail Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), while applauding the Federal Government on the policy, advised that it should go with caution in its implementation. In a statement signed by National PRO, PETROAN, Dr. Joseph Obele, made available to journalists in Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, the group applauded Tinubu for the bold step in promoting local produce, but warned of potential pitfalls. In the statement, the National president of PETROAN, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, urged the government to exercise caution on the import policy to avoid economic shock. Gillis-Harry expressed concerns that the policy could worsen Nigeria’s inflation and emphasised the need for energy security. While commending the government’s efforts to strengthen the domestic economy and promote local content, the association urged the government to ensure that the policy does not lead to shortages or price increases, particularly in the petroleum sector, where local refining capacity is still being developed. PETROAN advised, “Essential and sensitive products, such as petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and other highly consumable goods, should be exempted from the ban or have a waiver to ensure their continuous availability. “This is because some products may not be readily available locally, or their local production may be insufficient to meet demand, leading to shortages and price hikes.” The association noted other factors that may necessitate importing goods, listing some as; “Unavailability of specialised technology or expertise locally, higher quality standards of imported goods, economies of scale favouring imports and strategic or critical nature of the product. “Even the United States, under the ‘America First’ policy, has implemented targeted tariffs rather than blanket bans, allowing for flexibility and exemptions for critical goods.” Listing some of the advantages of banning the importation of foreign goods, Gillis-Harry said it promotes local content, stimulates economic growth, creates jobs, and increases domestic production. He added that the policy would aid in reducing reliance on foreign goods, which narrows the trade deficit and conserves foreign exchange. He said, “Our primary concern is the availability and affordability of petroleum products in Nigeria to meet the daily consumption volume of over 46 million litres of petrol and other petroleum products. “We must ensure that our policies do not compromise energy security, as this could have far-reaching consequences for the economy and the well-being of Nigerians.”",

      • "content": "The internal crisis plaguing the Labour Party (LP) escalated on Wednesday as rival factions led by Senator Nenadi Usman and Julius Abure took disciplinary actions against each other’s key members. Senator Usman’s faction announced the formation of a six-member disciplinary committee to investigate Abure, whom she described as an impostor and accused of corruption and misconduct. At a press conference in Abuja, Usman said the panel was set up in line with Article 19 of the party’s constitution and given 21 days to complete its work. “The National Executive Council has decided to act in defense of the party’s integrity and in response to serious allegations of financial misconduct and anti-party activities,” Usman said. Members of the disciplinary panel include Senator Ireti Kingibe (Chairman), Peter Ameh (Secretary), Kumba Mbemba, Okejo Onwakalusi, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, and former acting national chairman, Maria Lebeke. Usman insisted that the committee would ensure fair hearing for all parties involved and argued that Abure’s continued claim to the national chairmanship was a violation of a recent Supreme Court judgment which, she said, affirmed his removal. Meanwhile, the Abure-led faction struck back by suspending six high-profile figures associated with Usman’s group, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and four others. According to a statement by the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, the decision followed the conclusion of a disciplinary investigation into alleged anti-party activities. The suspended members were named as: Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. “These individuals are hereby barred from acting on behalf of the party. Relevant institutions such as the Nigeria Governors Forum, National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies are advised to take note,” the statement read. Farouk also dismissed Nenadi Usman’s authority, claiming she is not a registered member of the Labour Party. He alleged she had recently pledged allegiance to another political party and accused her of having unresolved corruption cases with the EFCC, undermining her credibility to initiate any probe. He defended the party’s financial records, stating they had been audited by INEC-approved external auditors, who reportedly commended the party for its transparency. As the power struggle within the Labour Party intensifies, both factions remain locked in a battle for control, further weakening the party’s internal cohesion and public image.",

      • "content": "Former President Goodluck Jonathan has raised concerns over the subtle erosion of multiparty democracy in Nigeria, warning that the country risks slipping into a one-party state through political manipulation rather than deliberate planning. Speaking on Wednesday at a memorial lecture in Abuja in honour of late elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan cautioned that undermining opposition parties could destabilise Nigeria’s already fragile democratic structure. While acknowledging that a one-party system had worked in some contexts, such as Tanzania under Julius Nyerere, Jonathan stressed that Nigeria’s diverse ethnic, religious, and political realities demand an inclusive and carefully designed political framework. “A one-party state may not be inherently bad,” Jonathan said. “Julius Nyerere used it to stabilise Tanzania post-independence due to the country’s ethnic and religious diversity. But it was a deliberate and expert-led decision—not something that happened through political scheming.” He warned that adopting a one-party system through “the back door” would plunge Nigeria into crisis, urging political stakeholders to protect democratic institutions and allow space for diverse political voices. Jonathan’s remarks follow growing concerns about political intolerance and a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which critics say is squeezing out opposition parties and silencing dissent. At the event, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, decried the current state of the nation, suggesting that the efforts of Nigeria’s founding fathers, including Edwin Clark, were being undone. “The labour of our heroes past is already in vain,” Obi said, citing widespread insecurity, deepening poverty, and soaring living costs as evidence of national decline. Also speaking, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the occasion, emphasised the importance of prioritising national unity above personal or political ambition, saying this was key to Nigeria’s progress.",

Olalekan Anjolaiya, a former Lagos State House of Assembly aspirant for Alimosho Constituency II has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In a statement on Wednesday, Anjolaiya, while confirming his membership of the Labour Party, cited what he described as the PDP’s “dwindling ideological integrity”, as reason for his decision. He also accused the main opposition party of having “structural weaknesses, and a concerning closeness” to the All Progressives Congress, APC-led administration. Anjolaiya had served as a member of the PDP Local Government Executive in the constituency, where he played a key role in the party’s rebranding agenda. He, however, said the party had lost its ideological focus in recent times, abandoning its role as a credible opposition to become, in his words, a mere appendage of the ruling APC. “The PDP no longer functions as a credible opposition. It has lost its ideological focus, its moral compass, and its voice. Today, it operates more like an appendage of the APC than a people-centred alternative. “As a proud Awori son of Igando, Alimosho, I believe the days of political intimidation and tribal politics in Lagos are over. The people are ready for a new era of issue-based, inclusive, and people-oriented governance,” Anjolaiya stated. • "content": "The House of Representatives member for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Abia State, Amobi Ogah has pledged his total support for the Governor Alex Otti.He stated this while reacting to the suspension of the governor by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) as a “non-issue”.The Abure faction also announced Ogah’s suspension, along with other members, for alleged anti-party activities.Speaking via a statement on Wednesday, Ogah reaffirmed his loyalty to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, stating, “I want to make it clear — the so-called suspension means absolutely nothing to me. I am a mandate of the people and my commitment to Governor Alex Otti and his transformational agenda in Abia remains unshakable.“Governor Alex Otti is the best thing that has happened to Abia State in decades. I am with him full time.”He urged his constituents to remain calm, assuring them of his focus on delivering effective representation. Ogah emphasised his commitment to the people who elected him and the state’s leadership, stating, “No amount of intimidation can stop the will of the people.”Meanwhile, Otti, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to quickly arrest the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, for impersonation.Naija News reports that Otti made this known while dismissing his purported suspension by the Abure-led faction of the LP.In a statement on Wednesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Otti described Abure as a clown in a desperate search for a crown.According to Governor Otti, Abure’s statement on his suspension is not only a joke taken too far, but an affront to democracy by a group of inconsequential irritants desperate to use his name to advance their self-serving economic agenda. He urged members of the public to discountenance the purported suspension and continue to see Abure and his co-conspirators as a group of clowns in desperate search of a crown they do not deserve. The statement read, “The attention of His Excellency the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has been drawn to the news of his purported suspension alongside other eminent leaders of the Labour Party from the Party by the former National Chairman of the Party, Julius Abure.“The statement by Abure and his gang of comedians is not only a joke taken too far, but an affront on democracy by a group of inconsequential irritants who are desperate to use Governor Otti’s name to advance their self-serving economic agenda.“For the records, the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has rightly and unambiguously stated that Julius Abure is no longer the National Chairman of Labour Party. The judgement which is in agreement with the Constitution of Labour Party, and formed the basis for the setting up of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee stripped Abure of every authority to parade himself as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.“Just few hours after being summoned by a Committee Set up by the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee to come and respond to allegations of gross misconduct bordering on financial misappropriation, impersonation and anti Party activities levelled against him, Abure decided to be smart by half by rushing to the press to announce the purported suspension of Governor Otti and other eminent members of the party.“We enjoin Nigerians to disregard Abure’s laughable statement and continue to see him and his co-conspirators as a group of clowns in desperate search of a crown they do not deserve.“Finally, we call on the Inspector General of Police to quickly arrest Mr Abure for impersonation, while INEC should ensure full implementation of the Supreme Court judgement as a way of preserving the integrity of the Supreme Court and protecting our democracy.”The post Suspension Means Nothing To Me – Abia Lawmaker Pledges Support For Otti appeared first on Naija News.",

      • "content": "By Victor Terhemba Totalitarianism, in its classical sense, refers to a political system in which the state recognises no limits to its authority and seeks to regulate every aspect of public and private life. When applied to the domain of thought and discourse, however, totalitarianism morphs into a more insidious social phenomenon—a rigid insistence that only a singular perspective is valid, and all others must be silenced, ridiculed, or coerced into compliance. In contemporary Nigeria, this intellectual totalitarianism is increasingly evident in the social, political and digital spaces, where many individuals treat their personal opinions not as subjective positions but as infallible truths. One of the foundational principles of democracy is pluralism, the acceptance and coexistence of multiple, even conflicting, viewpoints. Democracy, by design, thrives on debate, dissent, and diversity of thought. However, in today’s Nigeria, public discourse is becoming alarmingly polarised. Individuals now frequently conflate personal opinion with empirical fact, and in doing so, they adopt an absolutist posture that dismisses dissent as ignorance or malice. The social media space has become a fertile breeding ground for this phenomenon. The democratisation of information via platforms like Twitter (now X), Facebook, and WhatsApp has, unfortunately, also led to the democratisation of misinformation, coupled with an erosion of civility and respect for opposing views. It is now commonplace to encounter people who, under the guise of activism or political engagement, aggressively attack those who differ from them. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL Historically, societies that have suppressed dissenting voices in favour of monolithic thought structures have flirted with authoritarian collapse. George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 offers a literary illustration of how control over thought and language can lead to intellectual servitude. Similarly, totalitarian regimes in the 20th century (from Nazi Germany to Stalinist USSR) exemplified how enforcing a singular ideological narrative could decimate the soul of a nation. In Nigeria, although the state itself may not be enforcing a single narrative, the culture of thought among citizens increasingly mimics totalitarian tendencies. Whether in debates around religion, ethnicity or politics, disagreement is no longer seen as a component of dialogue but as a declaration of war. A form of intellectual absolutism can be observed in certain strands of online feminism in Nigeria. Although feminism, at its core, advocates for the right of women to make autonomous choices, some contemporary Nigerian feminists seem to impose a narrow, often Western-centric template of what womanhood must look like. Take the now-infamous case of “Mummy Zee,” a woman who was publicly castigated and condemned for expressing pride in waking up at 4 a.m. to cook for her husband. Rather than being celebrated for exercising her agency in a personal relationship, she was (and still is being) labelled a “pick me” and derided for perpetuating patriarchal norms. This reaction is a deeply ironic contradiction; in the name of liberating women, some feminists have become gatekeepers of acceptable female behaviour, denying women the freedom to define empowerment on their own terms. What drives this opinion absolutism? Psychologically, it can be linked to cognitive biases such as the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals overestimate their understanding of complex issues. Sociologically, it reflects a deeper crisis of identity and trust in institutions. In a country where the state has repeatedly failed to deliver justice, security, and opportunity, citizens cling to their opinions as a form of existential certainty. Their views become extensions of their identity, and any challenge feels like an attack on their very being. The essence of a healthy democratic society lies in its embrace of epistemic humility—the understanding that no individual or group holds a monopoly on truth. Opinions, by nature, are subjective and context-dependent. The conflation of opinion with fact, and belief with empirical knowledge, is not just intellectually dishonest; it is socially dangerous. Interestingly, the economic and social precarity in Nigeria has intensified ideological rigidity. With so much instability, people gravitate toward binaries: good vs. evil, us vs. them. The nuanced middle ground, where most democratic dialogue should occur, is abandoned in favour of tribal loyalty, be it political, religious or cultural. The consequences of this totalitarianism of opinions are grave. It is such that encourages intellectual laziness, where echo chambers replace critical thinking. It discourages nuanced debate, where the goal is not to understand but to dominate. It also threatens civic cohesion, as people become more tribal, less tolerant, and increasingly hostile to diversity of thought. Most worryingly, it deters political participation. When the public square becomes a battlefield of insults and self-righteousness, many opt out entirely, leaving the discourse to be dominated by the loudest and most intolerant voices. This depletes the democratic process of its essential ingredient: inclusive, respectful, and pluralistic engagement. If Nigeria is to deepen its democratic roots, it must first confront the creeping authoritarianism of opinion. Citizens must be taught—and reminded—that disagreement is not treason, and that truth often emerges through friction, not conformity. We must move from the arrogance of certainty to the humility of inquiry. Schools, religious institutions, and media platforms must all play a role in reviving a culture of critical thinking, active listening, and respectful dialogue. Pluralism is not weakness; it is the strength of democracy. And in a country as complex and diverse as Nigeria, our survival depends not on unanimity, but on our ability to live with difference—and to debate without dehumanising. • "content": "By Nasir Imam The recent Senator Godswill Akpabio/Natasha controversy, though fading gradually, has triggered much discourse, which necessitates the need to look at whether the Senate, nay, the Nigerian National Assembly, is derailing from its mandate. There is no parliament all over the world that is immune to scandals, but the ability to enforce an ethics code is what sets many apart. Constitutional jurisdiction dictates that Nigeria’s National Assembly shouldn’t be only a place of wheeling and dealing, nor a parliament filled with sycophants and elbow-hangers, but a place for debate and where weighty decisions are made. Though there is no doubt about some achievements and progress made by Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly, it pales into insignificance when there is credence to allegations of members being bootlickers and rubber stamp of the Executive, thus turning itself into a cesspool of irrepressible conflict, controversy and corruption. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL Former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah it was who recently shed light on the financial challenges facing some Nigerian lawmakers after leaving office, revealing that many struggle to meet basic obligations like paying their children’s school fees. Na’Allah emphasised that the glamorous image associated with the National Assembly is far from reality. “Some of them ventured into the National Assembly believing that it is a place to make money, only to discover that they are going to end up poorer,” he said. As author Robert V. Remini states, “political power invites corruption, the dispersal of money entices the weak, the corrupt and the arrogant who think they can escape detection”. Our current Distinguished and Honourables should therefore glaringly display a strength of purpose and the commanding presence to bring about a revitalised legislature that could continue to shape national policy. They should demonstrate that though members can rave and rant at each other, yet beneath the surface agitated by the storms of politics, devoid of pretensions, those sympathies that tend not to obfuscate people, but rather en noble humanity, remain undisturbed. Historian Henry Adams said, “Congress is inefficient and shows itself more and more incompetent, as at present constituted, to wield the enormous powers that are forced upon it”. NASS leadership, rather than mellow, should reassert its independence from the Executive. The leaders must stand guard for any encroachment by the President. In the early 1960s, when US President JFK was addressing the House of Representatives, he said, “Now, I’d like to talk about the Rules Committee”, House Speaker Rayburn’s hand-hit the table hard saying “No Sir, that is House business...the White House has no business there at all.” NASS membership is hierarchical. They have their own traditions and rules. To succeed as a legislator, members must always remember that access equals power; they should work hard, specialise, do their homework, be in attendance on the floor, keep silent until you know what you’re talking about, follow their committees, participate in the process, learn parliamentary procedures, and, without malice, be courteous to colleagues. A former US Speaker, Sam Rayburn said, “A congressman should never forget his district”, which may be why many legislators have failed to return to our National Assembly; due to dereliction of duty or their shoddy treatment to their electorate, who refuse to send them back, except through shady deals. Chairmen of committees of course are powerful but power flows from the Senate President or House Speaker. Rarely does a speech on the floor change a single vote. The trick is the art of compromise, to learn to disagree without being disagreeable. Otherwise, some bills will pass before some members are even aware of what they are voting for. Many members vote on bills they haven’t read. They simply go with the flow. In our National Assembly, do we have sufficient bills introduced, and if yes, how many die at committees? Politics, like US House Speaker Tip O’Neill said, is the art of repackaging. By sheer brute persistence, or intense partisanship, members can rise and have an impact, out of all proportion of probability. However, the questions still remains, are National Assembly members there to serve or be served? Must we continue to be circumspect on whether our legislators are making any meaningful difference in the life of the ordinary Nigerian? It was US President James Madison who stated, “The aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first, to obtain for Rulers, men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue the common good of the society, and to take the most effectual precaution for keeping them virtuous, while they continue to hold their public trust”. Therefore, our democracy continues to evolve. When the story of Nigeria’s National Assembly is written, and rewritten, let it be said that its profile has risen, for Nigerians deserve the best from its legislators, who have the rare privilege of service, hence the need for them to be reminded of their obligation in the relatively brief time to make a difference. • "content": "By Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has advocated consensus as the preferred method for selecting candidates ahead of the July 12 local government elections, as more than 500 aspirants jostle for the 57 chairmanship seats in the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). The party is set to conduct primaries for both chairmanship and 376 councillorship seats on Saturday. Over 1,000 aspirants are reportedly seeking councillorship positions. At a stakeholders’ meeting held Wednesday at the party secretariat in Ikeja, party leaders including Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat, House Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, and members of the National Assembly urged aspirants to embrace consensus to maintain internal harmony. “This has always been our practice, and I encourage us to support the consensus approach,” Hamzat said. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, urged aspirants to prioritise party unity: “The President is from Lagos, and all eyes are on us. We must not disappoint him—we must make him proud and redeem our image.” Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Chief Tajudeen Olusi, said consensus was the most practical approach, given the high number of aspirants. “In some wards, we have as many as 12 aspirants for a single councillorship seat. We must take things easy, talk to ourselves and concede,” he said. Chairman of the party’s Electoral Committee, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), said indirect primaries would be used where consensus fails, adding that the chairmanship primaries would hold at the state secretariat while councillorship primaries would take place in wards. Council chairman slumps during meeting Meanwhile, the meeting was brought to an abrupt end following a health scare involving the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, Hon. Kolade Alabi, who slumped shortly after addressing the gathering. He was immediately revived and taken to the hospital. Alabi, who also chairs Conference 57 representing all council bosses in Lagos, collapsed at the podium. A short video later circulated on X showed him being assisted out of the venue. Though the cause of the collapse was not officially disclosed, party sources attributed it to heat and fatigue, dismissing suggestions of violence or foul play. “He slumped due to the heat at the venue, but thank God he was revived immediately. The meeting was peaceful. It could happen to anyone,” a source said. Alabi, a former National President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), was reported to have fully recovered. Despite the incident, party officials said preparations for the primaries would proceed as scheduled, with consensus expected to ease tensions and reduce the number of contested positions. • "content": "By Mohammed Ibrahim Yaba, Kaduna Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step down from presidential politics ahead of 2027. Speaking in a BBC Hausa interview monitored by Daily Trust, Galadima said it was time for Atiku to rest after decades of political ambition. “My advice is born out of concern and love. Atiku has spent 33 years seeking the presidency. History will remember that he tried. But now, he should support and mentor a younger candidate,” Galadima said. He noted that Atiku, who will be 82 by the next election cycle, should consider the effects of age on leadership capacity. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL “When Buhari won in 2015, he was 72. Atiku will be 82 by 2027. Most leadership crises are linked to age-related decline in thinking and reasoning,” he said. Galadima added that even Atiku’s closest allies were now urging him to step aside and help promote a new face for the presidency. Daily Trust reports that a former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, had also urged Atiku and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to run for the 2027 presidential election. On political realignments, Galadima advised restraint, saying it was too early to begin coalition talks. “Rushing into politics now only gives the current government time to correct its mistakes and strategise. Politics is about timing,” he said. UPDATE NEWS: Nigerians can now earn US Dollars through domain flipping, buy domain names for cheap and have it resold to earn up to $15,000. • "content": "By Al-Mustapha A. Mustapha Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his strong commitment to restructuring Nigeria, describing it as a central pillar of his political ideology. Atiku made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), led by Comrade Nubari Saatah, at his residence in Abuja on Monday. Atiku was seen addressing a group of young men he introduced as his staff in a viral video of the meeting shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. “Do you see these gentlemen sitting here? All of them are my staff. They are all young men. This is the kind of people I want to work with,” he said, emphasising youth inclusion. He stressed the importance of empowering young Nigerians, saying they have a critical role in shaping the nation’s future. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL On restructuring, Atiku said, “I believe in restructuring because I was born and grew up in a restructured Nigeria. It remains one of my major political beliefs. If I have the opportunity, I definitely will restructure this country.” He also hinted at ongoing discussions about forming a political coalition—one different from the 2014 merger that he described as focused solely on gaining power. “This time, there are participants from all the major parties—APC, PDP, Labour, and others. It’s about shared values, especially federalism,” he said. Atiku pledged continued engagement with regional and civil society groups, adding that the input of groups like the NDC would shape future political efforts. • "content": "By Mumini Abdulkareem (Ilorin) & Al-Mustapha A. Mustapha (Abuja) Legal and political experts are sharply divided over the shadow government unveiled by Professor Pat Utomi, with some hailing it as a democratic necessity in the face of a weakened opposition, while others question its constitutional grounding and long-term viability. The federal government, however, has dismissed the initiative as an aberration. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said Nigeria’s presidential system does not accommodate such structures, insisting that opposition politics must remain within the bounds of propriety. Utomi, a political economist and former presidential candidate, recently announced the formation of a “shadow government” aimed at offering alternative policy ideas and holding President Bola Tinubu’s administration to account. According to him, the decision became inevitable to save Nigeria’s democracy following the gale of defections that has hit the opposition, drifting the country into a one-party state. Speaking in a chat with Daily Trust yesterday, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Salman Jawondo, described the move as a welcome innovation, even if novel in Nigeria’s political landscape. He argued that it aligns with democratic ideals and could fill the vacuum left by the country’s faltering opposition parties. Senate to consider Tax Reform Bills today As Dangote sees hope rising for NNPCL “This is not treasonable and does not violate any constitutional provision. It’s a legitimate political response aimed at improving governance,” said Jawondo, a former Attorney General of Kwara State. “As it is today, there’s no effective opposition in Nigeria, and this initiative may finally put the government on its toes.” But another SAN, Dr Akin Onigbinde, offered a more cautious view. While acknowledging Utomi’s intellectual credentials, he warned against importing concepts from parliamentary systems like the Westminster model into Nigeria’s presidential democracy. “This is a presidential system, not a parliamentary one. Shadow governments are not part of our political structure. That said, Utomi’s voice is important and should be used to constructively engage—not mirror—government,” he said. The initiative has also drawn both support and scepticism among political scientists. While Professor Gbade Ojo defended Utomi’s move, arguing that it represents a legitimate response to a hostile political environment, Dr Mohammed Alada took a different stance, warning that Utomi’s action borders on dangerous territory. “Utomi’s action is not criminal, and it provides an alternative avenue to speak truth to power. Unless it turns violent, there’s nothing unlawful about it,” Ojo said. But Alada argued that forming such a structure outside a political party framework could be misconstrued as an attempt to establish an alternative government. “This goes beyond criticism. Institutionalising a shadow government without party backing is unprecedented and potentially risky,” he said. “He should have channelled his efforts through an organised party platform, as was done during the First Republic.” Abubakar Ibrahim, a political scientist based in Lafia, dismissed the controversy around Utomi’s move, saying it merely reflects the failures of the Tinubu administration. “If the government had done its job—addressing hunger, insecurity, and unemployment—Utomi wouldn’t have needed to step in,” he said. “This initiative only underscores the depth of leadership failure.” In Zaria, another political analyst, Usman Aliyu Hayatu, said Utomi is well placed to lead such an effort, given his academic and political pedigree. “With credible names like Dele Farotimi involved, the initiative has intellectual weight. Nigeria is in a crisis, and this can be seen as an emergency response to rising hardship and insecurity,” Hayatu said. He, however, acknowledged that sustaining the initiative would be a major challenge. In other parts of the country, reports abound of criminal attacks on lives and properties of law-abiding citizens. But for many observers—inside and outside the Senate—this renewed call for a national security summit, though commendable, does not instil confidence as it sounds more like a tired echo from the past. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1718806029429-0'); }); The Senate’s latest resolution to convene a two-day National Security Summit in Abuja, involving all levels of government, traditional rulers, civil society, and the security sector, followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South) and co-sponsored by three of his colleagues on Tuesday. The lawmakers noted that growing insecurity is driven not only by domestic factors—banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings—but also by global geopolitical shifts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and U.S.-China tensions, which they argue are deepening instability within Nigeria. In theory, this summit is supposed to produce actionable, research-driven solutions. In practice however, many are asking: what will be done differently to ensure that this summit achieves what previous ones have not?History Repeats Itself $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); The 10th Senate is not the first to summon a conference in the face of national security failure. In fact, almost every Assembly in the last two decades has resorted to this approach under different names. The 9th Assembly, under the leadership of then Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, held a high-profile security summit in 2021 amid widespread outrage over escalating violence across Nigeria. That summit gathered military chiefs, governors, and security experts who offered detailed recommendations on reforming Nigeria’s security architecture.Yet, almost four years later, most of the proposals from that summit are collecting dust in government shelves. No white paper was issued. No significant legislative follow-through occurred. Typical of many legislative interventions including probes and motions, the summit ended as many feared it would—with fanfare, media coverage, and commendations, but no measurable impact. Many have argued that while it is true that the legislature does not have the power to implement as that is the job of the executive arm of government, there should be more efforts from the National Assembly to create impact from its activities. Without a clear plan on how proposals from the summit are going to be implemented, pundits say, the resources, time and energy spent on organising such high profile events go to waste.Senators reactSenator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who has served through several assemblies, captured the collective frustration of many Nigerians during debate on the motion in plenary when he said “Each session, there is a security session,” he said. “No one of us does not know what is going on in his area. Do we want to be true, fair and say the truth about what is happening in this country? If we don’t want to be true to ourselves, then we can go ahead with a summit.”Abaribe’s remarks were echoed by Senator Abdul Ningi, who questioned the logic of repeating what has already failed. “If we continue to keep on doing things without results and keep on doing them, we are not only deceiving ourselves, we are deceiving the people that sent us here to represent them,” he said. “I am not sure the solutions have to do with creating a summit.”While some senators like Abaribe and Ningi are clearly sceptical, others believe the Senate cannot afford to be quiet just because past efforts did not yield desired outcomes. Minority Leader, Abba Moro, a former Minister of Interior, urged his colleagues to continue to consider all options until a solution is found to the insecurity problem. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); Hear him: “That we have provided solutions in the past and they have not worked does not stop us from proffering solutions,” Moro argued. “Now that we are confronted with hydra-headed insecurity, there is nothing that stops us from exploring all means of bringing insecurity to a halt,” he stated. His point is not without merit. Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and multifaceted. Banditry in the North-West, herdsmen clashes in the Middle-Belt, Boko Haram in the North-East, secessionist violence in the South-East, and oil theft in the South-South all require region-specific approaches. But Senator Adamu Aliero pointed out that summits are not substitutes for operational intelligence and real-time response. “I don’t believe that having a security summit is the answer,” Aliero warned. “We are seeing a new terrorist group in parts of Kwara and Niger. We should be demanding briefings from the security chiefs on what strategy they are adopting, not holding a conference.”A Pattern of Motion Without MovementDaily Sun recalls that from the 6th to the 9th Assemblies, a pattern has emerged: outrage over security lapses, a motion in plenary, minutes of silence in honour of the victims, the constitution of a committee or summit, and eventually, silence. As far back as the 7th Senate under David Mark, a National Conference was convened on Security and Peace in 2012 after a string of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East. Security experts and academics presented papers on counterterrorism strategies, community policing, and military-civil relations. The conference ended with the usual communique, rich in recommendations but poor in follow-up. The 8th Senate, under Bukola Saraki, followed a similar path in 2016, setting up a special security summit after the resurgence of herdsmen-farmer clashes. Although it succeeded in drawing national attention to the issue, the summit’s recommendations were not pursued aggressively. By the end of the tenure, the same security crises remained—only now, more widespread.According to a 2023 report by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), only 15 percent of policy recommendations from legislative-led security conferences since 2011 have been implemented. The rest have either been ignored, rendered redundant by poor coordination with the executive arm, or overtaken by events. Summit Fatigue and Citizen Cynicism $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); Daily Sun investigation reveals that there is a growing sense among citizens that these summits are not about solving insecurity but about the lawmakers creating an impression that they care about their ordeal. The lack of implementation and transparency of resolutions from such parleys, dash hopes, erode public trust, and make lawmakers appear to be increasingly out of touch with the daily trauma Nigerians face. But the Senate’s decision to decentralise this latest summit by having senators convene versions of it in their respective districts is likely an attempt to make the process more participatory and effective. It is left to be seen how this idea will improve security around local communities where citizens bury their dead victims on a daily basis and count losses accruing from terrorist attacks. Not Lip Service This Time Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, however, has assured that this summit will not be business as usual. He positioned the summit as a necessary reset button—a way to unify all stakeholders around a national response to insecurity. Akpabio said the summit would include not just government and security officials, but also traditional rulers, student unions, and representatives of affected communities because “security is everybody’s business.” While this inclusive approach is commendable, the question remains: will it lead to tangible change, or is it another performance of concern? The challenge for the Senate is not lack of ideas. From the National Security Strategy of 2019 to countless research papers by local think tanks, Nigeria’s security problems have been diagnosed repeatedly. What is lacking is continuity, coordination and accountability. Moreover, the Senate itself has legislative powers, but it is often reluctant to use. It can mandate oversight of defence spending, push for reform of policing laws, and insist on timelines for the implementation of recommendations. Instead, lawmakers often defer to the executive, then resort to summits when nothing changes. Some of the lawmakers raised this point during the debate on the summit when they called for more regular briefings of relevant Senate committees by security chiefs in order to monitor real time progress. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); A Moment of Decision The stakes appear high. With the 2027 general elections approaching and violence increasing in several regions, Nigeria stands at another dangerous crossroads. The Senate has a choice to continue the cycle of summitry and speeches, or break with tradition and enforce implementation. One thing the lawmakers must keep in mind in all of these, is the fact that Nigerians’ lives depend on actions to improve their security and not just raising another topic for public discussion. What Nigerians need is sustained and enforced action against criminality in the society.Unless the 10th Senate is ready to do something fundamentally different, this latest summit will be remembered not for what it solved, but for what it symbolised: another missed opportunity to make the country habitable for citizens to live and flourish. The post Nigerian Senate and the politics of security summit appeared first on The Sun Nigeria.",

Surveillance cameras and military establishments should be installed to prevent further occupation by insurgents,” he said.Ganduje, who had similar issues during his tenure as governor of Kano State where he established a military training ground in Falgore forest to neutralise criminal activities, also encouraged Yobe to explore the possibility of adopting the same strategy. The national chairman, however, commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s achievements on security despite the challenges posed by insurgency. He expressed deep sympathy over the attack which left a military base destroyed, adding “we are here to sympathise and condole with the government and people of Yobe State over the unfortunate incident in Buni-Gari.”In his remarks, Buni thanked the APC chairman and his delegation for the visit, saying it was a demonstration of true leadership and empathy.“This visit is not just political, it is a clear sign of care. The attack in Buni-Gari is indeed a national concern. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); “Insurgents are targeting military formations to steal arms, and these weapons could be used anywhere in the country,” Buni said. He, however, affirmed Ganduje’s call for a shift in strategy, emphasising that insurgency is evolving and penetrating different regions under various guises.“This is a wake-up call for all of us. We must act fast, collectively, and with a sense of national duty,” he said.Buni said the insecurity related issues would top the agenda at the upcoming Northern Governors’ Forum meeting in Kaduna, slated for May 10.He assured the APC leadership that the governors would work with President Bola Tinubu to restore peace and stability in the region. The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies and collaborating with local communities toward tackling the threat of terrorism. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); The post Convert forests to military bases to prevent insurgents occupation, Ganduje tells FG appeared first on The Sun Nigeria.",

      • "content": "An advocacy group, Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law Initiative (AIRLIN), has called on Nigerians especially residing in Northern parts to get involved in electoral activities by exercising their constitutional rights and voting leaders of their choices. The national coordinator, Alh. Muhammad Ibrahim Gamawa, made the call during the inauguration ceremony of state and local government coordinators for Kaduna State at the Arewa House. He said the objective is to sensitise Nigerians on the need to be law abiding citizens, to respect each other irrespective of diversity in religion and culture, noting that citizens are saddled with the responsibility of protecting the country’s image within and outside Nigeria. “That is why we are here to inaugurate one of our 15 offices we have in the 19 Northern states because our aim is to cover all the Northern states. We are here to advocate for citizens to come and vote at the Centre because they have to elect their leaders. “If you recall, the last general election was witnessed by only 42 percent of voters and 68 were absent which is bad for the Country. So, we have to come out and know who failed to vote and one, convince them to vote for their leaders and keep them in offices to protect their own interest.” As part of their goals to increase voter participation, the national coordinator disclosed that the NGO will assist citizens to get voters’ cards, “The moment INEC opens the portal, we’ll have to help them get their voters card so that they can participate in any elections and exercise their rights.” Gamawa also harped on the importance of having a National Identity card, saying with the security situation, it has become easy to brand a Nigerian without National ID card as foreigner, invader or kidnapper. “Some people don’t have a National ID card which is a very big problem for Nigerians most especially those who are going to the Southern part of the country. “They will be stopped by Amotekun or any other cultural groups, they will be rounded up and asked to identify themselves and where they come from, some may even accuse them that they are not Nigerians. “Some will say they are from Kaduna but where is the ID card? But he doesn’t have neither does he have a driver’s licence or any other means of identification which will make them suspect he’s an outsider.” He also disclosed that his organisation is planning a one day conference to host at least 200 Islamic Scholars in Gama local Government who will come and be educated about nation building, citizens rights and duties and in turn, educate the students and pupils under them. “We’ll tell them their own duty, that the burden of electing a Senator, a Rep Member, a Governor and a President rests on them. They are citizens of Nigeria in every way but they have to come out and do their own duty by electing those who will be their leaders. “After now, we keep on with what we do like monthly gatherings, the seminars, conferences and others where we call lecturers and administrators to teach about what a Nation is, and a Nation is where people of different religions and ethnicity operates and stay together in peace and not in pieces.” Speaking earlier Kaduna State coordinator of AIRLIN, Alhaji Musa Muhammed, said the group is bent on making positive changes that will restore dignity and respect for Nigerians. He added that AIRLIN is home to everyone especially those who believe that there’s a need to reset the negative events bedeviling the country. We’ve got the edge. • "content": "Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the President Bola Tinubu administration’s latest “Nigeria First” mantra, as another public relations stunt designed to deceive and not deliver. He challenged the president to show his seriousness over the policy by either trading in his official Escalade for an Innoson, Nord or any made-in-Nigeria car, or that he should conduct all future medical check-ups at LUTH, National Hospital Abuja, UCH Ibadan instead of Paris or London. Atiku said Nigerians have grown weary of hollow speeches, adding that if the Tinubu’s government is truly serious about local content and economic patriotism, it must start at the very top. The former vice president, in a statement by his special assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said “We challenge President Tinubu to stop the noise and trade in his beloved Escalade for an Innoson, Nord or any made-in-Nigeria car. “That single act will do more to promote local industry than a thousand policy memos. Let’s see the ministers — those shameless Rolls Royce connoisseurs — sweat it out in Nigerian-made vehicles too. Or is “Nigeria First” only for the masses? “And speaking of double standards, it’s time Mr. President shelves his love affair with Paris and London. If he’s serious about patriotism, his next vacation should be at Obudu Cattle Ranch, Yankari Game Reserve, or Erin Ijesha Waterfalls. Nigeria is beautiful — unless, of course, the President thinks otherwise. “More importantly, the era of jetting off for medical tourism while preaching self-reliance must end. We demand that President Tinubu — champion of “Nigeria First” — conduct all future medical check-ups at LUTH, National Hospital Abuja, UCH Ibadan, or even the N41 billion Naira Akwa Ibom world-class hospital built by an uncommon transformer, in Uyo. If these hospitals are good enough for ordinary Nigerians, they should be good enough for their Commander-in-Chief. Anything less is sheer hypocrisy.” He said the Tinubu government’s addiction to foreign luxuries while demanding sacrifice from suffering Nigerians is the height of insincerity. “True leadership isn’t photo-ops or soundbites—it’s setting the tone by example. Nigeria deserves real commitment, not this never-ending charade,” he said. We’ve got the edge. Get real-time reports, breaking scoops, and exclusive angles delivered straight to your phone. • "content": "Speakers of Delta and Edo State Houses of Assembly have described the mass defection from Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) for All Progressive Congress, (APC) in the region as a significant political realignment in the South-South region. They said this when the Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, played host to some members of the Delta State House of Assembly (DSHA) led by the Speaker, Hon Dennis Guwor, in Benin City, the state capital. The speaker and his team were in Benin, in solidarity with their counterparts in the Edo State House of Assembly, where members elected on the platform of the PDP including the Speaker, Hon Blessing Agbebaku, defected to APC. Guwor, who is the national treasurer, Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria, described the mass defection of PDP members to APC. He said the movement signals a new chapter in South-South politics, with Delta and Edo states strengthening ties under the APC. Guwor told the Edo State Governor that the camaraderie that exists between members of the Delta and Edo State Houses of Assembly has been overwhelming, hence the solidarity with the Speaker, Hon Blessing Agbebaku and others that were defecting from PDP to the APC. The speaker informed the Edo Governor that 22 PDP members in the Delta State Assembly, including himself, had earlier in the day formally signed off PDP for APC during the resumed plenary session of the House same Tuesday. Guwor said it was a well thought out decision, done in the overall best interest of Deltans and pledged support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. Agbebaku, while receiving the Delta delegation, commended them for their show of unity and progressive alliance. • "content": "The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, has explained his decision to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).Speaking during a plenary session on Wednesday in Benin, Agbebaku clarified that his move was not based on party loyalty but was driven by the need to secure the benefits of his position for the development of his constituency. He said: “For me, this is not about party allegiance but rather about the growth and progress of my area. If I were to abandon this position due to party lines, I would be neglecting my duty to serve my people.”Agbebaku pointed out that his decision was supported by his constituents, referencing several ongoing development projects in Owan West, which had been initiated by Governor Monday Okpebholo. He reiterated that his defection was motivated solely by the interests of his people, not personal gain. “Politics is all about interest, but not my personal interest, rather the interest of my people,” he added. The Speaker further assured that the House would continue to function cohesively, regardless of party affiliations, and stressed the importance of collaboration with the governor for the benefit of Edo residents. In the session, a bill for the establishment of St. Matthews Royal College of Nursing Science Edenu-Irrua in Esan Central passed its second reading after deliberations. The post Edo Assembly Speaker explains defection to APC appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect.",

      • "content": "...Usman-led faction summons Abure over alleged corruption, fund mismanagement, others...Gives Abure 48 hours to defend himselfThe Labour Party is facing a deepening internal crisis as the faction led by Julius Abure announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including the party’s sole sitting governor, Dr Alex Otti of Abia State. The other suspended individuals include Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi. The suspension was confirmed in a statement issued by the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, on Wednesday in Abuja.According to Farouk, the disciplinary action follows a thorough process that was triggered by allegations of anti-party activities. He pointed out that on May 2, 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party had established a five-member Disciplinary Committee to investigate these allegations, including those against Governor Otti and others.“The committee, led by Deputy National Chairman Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, was tasked with investigating Dr Alex Otti, the Abia State governor, and other party members over allegations of engaging in activities detrimental to the party,” Farouk explained in the statement. He continued that after the committee concluded its investigation and submitted its findings, the party leadership ratified the recommendations, resulting in the suspension of the members.“These individuals will no longer represent the party in any capacity,” Farouk added, urging institutions such as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies to take note of the decision. In addition to the suspensions, the Labour Party distanced itself from Nenadi Usman, clarifying that she is not a registered member but rather a supporter of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. The statement made clear, “We recognise her as a member of the Obidient Support Group, which worked for the party’s presidential candidate in 2023. Therefore, she will not be subject to any sanctions as she is not a member of the party.”In a more surprising development, the party raised questions about Usman’s integrity, stating, “She should explain to Nigerians how she acquired her radio station in Kaduna, her properties across Nigeria and abroad, her companies in Cameroon, and her plantations. Nenadi Usman is in no position to initiate any investigation or speak on corruption.”The statement also reaffirmed the Labour Party’s stance on political alliances, asserting its rejection of any proposed coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.“The party has firmly decided against any coalition, as we believe that the individuals advocating for it lack the capacity, character, and competence to manage such an arrangement,” it stated. The Labour Party emphasised that it intends to contest the 2027 elections independently, rejecting any future discussions on political mergers. The latest development is part of an ongoing power struggle within the party, with rival factions jostling for control as the 2027 elections approach. In a parallel move, Nenadi Usman has launched her own probe into Julius Abure, accusing him of corruption, misappropriating party funds, and engaging in anti-party activities. At a press conference on Wednesday, Usman claimed that Abure had continued to present himself as the national chairman of the party despite being removed from the position. She also accused him of running the Labour Party like a personal business to fulfil selfish ambitions.Usman revealed that a disciplinary panel, led by Senator Ireti Kingibe and with Peter Ameh as secretary, had been set up to investigate the charges against Abure. The committee will also recommend any necessary disciplinary actions should the allegations be proven true.Usman further criticised Abure for his failure to conduct party congresses at various levels, which, she argued, had allowed the hijacking of the party’s structures. She insisted that restoring internal democracy was a priority, with the committee aiming to establish a clear timetable for the upcoming congresses and elections. In a bid to swiftly address the matter, Usman gave Abure 48 hours to stop presenting himself as the party leader or face disciplinary consequences.“The disciplinary panel has 21 days to complete its investigation and make appropriate recommendations,” she stated. This latest move follows the suspension of several party members by Abure’s faction, including Governor Otti, over similar allegations of anti-party activities. Both factions have referenced the April 4 Supreme Court ruling to support their respective claims to the party’s leadership, with Abure’s camp arguing that the judgment affirmed his position as national chairman, while Usman’s caretaker committee contends that it marked the expiration of his tenure. The Labour Party remains in turmoil, with each faction intensifying its efforts to solidify control in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. The post LP crisis: Abure-led faction suspends Otti, Kingibe, others over alleged anti-party activities appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect.",

      • "content": "By Phebe Ejinkeonye-ChristianAs the year unfolds, business owners should not just work hard, they must work smart with SMARTEY goals that deliver excellent results. One of the major reasons business owners struggle to see real growth is that they set vague, shallow, and unrealistic goals. Many desire success, but desire alone is not enough. Achieving business goals require intentionality and structured planning. That’s why I want to introduce you to a powerful approach that can totally change how you plan your business goals in 2025 and beyond. This approach is called SMARTEY. SMARTEY is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Evaluated, and Yield-driven. This approach works for every category of persons – whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been in business for years.S – Specific: Your business goal must be clear, intentional, and easy to understand. It’s not enough to say, “I just want to grow my business.” That’s vague. What does growth mean to you – sales, visibility, profit? How much of it, and in what area? For example, instead of saying, “I want more customers in 2025,” you could say: “I want to attract 20 new female customers in April through WhatsApp marketing.” The second statem points directly to who, when, and how, and is more actionable. That’s what it means to be specific. In your business, clarity is important for success. Lack of specificity makes a business owner simply chase shadows and celebrate busyness instead of productivity. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1718806029429-0'); }); M – Measurable: If you can’t measure your business’ progress, how will you know you’re growing? Every business goal should have measurable elements – something you can count or track. Ask yourself, “How will I know that I’m moving forward?” If there’s no way to measure it, it’s not yet a complete goal. You measure your business goals with “how much...”, “how often...”, or “how many...” For example: saying “I want to post 3 product videos every week of April on my business WhatsApp status.” Means that you’re measuring how often you are able to post your product videos on social media in April. Now, if you only post 2 videos in the first week, you instantly know you fell short, and need to do better the following week. Measurability keeps you accountable and helps you identify gaps.A – Achievable: Let me be honest with you here – some of us dream too big without preparing well. I’ve made that mistake before. Ambitious dreams are fantastic, but only work where realism is applied. A business owner’s goals should match the current level of resources, capacity, and experience of the owner? Imagine this: you just started selling hair accessories in January, and by July, you say you want to be exporting globally. Is that achievable within six months with your current setup? Probably not. Instead, setting a smaller goal first like, “I want to sell to 5 new states outside mine between April and June.” makes it more realistic and still pushes you towards the bigger dream. In setting goals, a business owner must ask the question: “Can I really achieve this goal with what I have right now?” If the answer is “No,” then the next step is to break it down into smaller chunks. Business growth is a marathon, not a sprint.R – Relevant: This one is powerful. Your business goals must align with your business vision. If you want to run a fashion accessories brand for urban ladies, and someone tells you to start selling skincare because it’s trending, pause and ask: “Is this really in line with my long-term vision?” Trends are great, and yes, I always encourage business owners to leverage trends. But not all trends are meant for you. Relevance means your goals must make sense for you, your brand, and your customers. Many business owners waste time doing things that aren’t connected to their dream. So, before you jump on that latest challenge, or introduce a new product, ask yourself: “Does this move me closer to my business dream?” $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); T – Time-bound: Time is a very important tool in goal-setting. Without setting a timeframe, your goals become nothing but empty wishes. Your business goal must have a “by when” attached to it. In simple terms, when do you want that goal to have been fully achieved? For instance, instead of saying: “I want to increase my Instagram followers”, you could say: “I want to grow my Instagram page by 1,000 followers by July 15th.” That date gives your goal life. It sets urgency and helps you plan your strategies. Whether it’s a one-week goal, one-month goal, or one-year goal – put a timeframe to it. This will help you measure your success and adjust quickly when necessary.E – Evaluated: Setting goals is good, but tracking and evaluating them is even better. Every week or month, sit down with your goal and ask yourself: “What worked?” “What didn’t work?” “Why didn’t I meet this target?” “What should I adjust or remove?” or “Did I allow distractions or weaknesses to sabotage my efforts?” Evaluation gives you clarity on your growth process. It tells you what to stop, what to continue, and what to improve. And if you can’t do this alone, get a coach or accountability partner to guide you through your evaluations. I always tell business owners – the goal is not just to work hard, but to work smart. Evaluating your goals regularly helps you work smart.Y – Yield-driven: Finally, your goals must yield something. What is the expected outcome of that goal? Visibility? Sales? Clients? Referrals? Partnerships? There must be a harvest. If not, the goal becomes an activity, not a strategy. Always ask yourself: “What do I want this goal to produce for my business?” If your goal is to collaborate with influencers, what is the yield? Is it for more brand awareness, or more sales, or something else? If your goal is to post daily on Facebook, what is the expected outcome? Do you want it to yield engagement, or traffic, or conversion? When your goal is yield-driven, you don’t just do things for the sake of doing – you consciously expect results, and that expectation shapes how you plan and evaluate. In conclusion, running a business is not guesswork. It demands structure, systems, and intentionality. The SMARTEY framework enabled business owners move from mere business activities to meaningful productivity. Business owners who need exceptional results in 2025 must give attention to setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound, evaluated, and yield-driven. The SMARTEY framework helps business owners move from being busy to productive. The future of a business is not a mystery, but the result of the goals set today.• Ejinkeonye-Christian, a certified Life Coach and Business Educator is the CEO of Phebeon Consulting and Media Solutions Ltd., Enugu state, Nigeria+234(0)708-048-0510, ceo@phebeon.com.ng $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); The post New smart formula for business success appeared first on The Sun Nigeria.",

      • "content": "By Kodilichukwu OkelekweAs we mark the two-year anniversary of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency on May 29, 2025, it is a moment to reflect not merely on the achievements but also on the vision, courage, and determination that have characterized his leadership. In an era where the challenges facing Nigeria are both profound and complex, President Tinubu has exemplified the qualities of a true leader—one who embraces change and inspires hope. One of the most significant milestones of President Tinubu’s administration has been the comprehensive economic reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s economy. The removal of fuel subsidy, a bold and often contentious decision, was a necessary step towards fiscal sustainability. By redirecting these funds into critical infrastructure projects and social services, the government has begun to address the long-standing issues of inefficiency and corruption that have plagued the subsidy regime. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1718806029429-0'); }); The introduction of the Naira-for-Crude policy represents another revolutionary step towards stabilizing Nigeria’s economy. This initiative not only seeks to strengthen the currency but also to create a more predictable environment for international trade. Coupled with significant foreign exchange reforms, these measures have contributed to the accumulation of over $23 billion in net foreign reserves, providing a buffer against global economic volatility.Furthermore, President Tinubu’s administration has actively promoted an environment conducive to both foreign and local investments. By implementing tax reforms and enhancing revenue allocations to states and local governments, the government has empowered regional authorities to invest in their communities, thereby fostering economic growth at the grassroots level. This commitment to decentralization also includes the push for local government autonomy, ensuring that resources are utilized in a manner that reflects the unique needs of each region.Infrastructure, as we all know, is the backbone of any thriving economy, and President Tinubu’s administration has made monumental strides in this area. The ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway are not just projects; they are symbols of a renewed commitment to connecting the nation. These legacy projects promise to enhance trade, boost local economies, and improve accessibility, ultimately bridging the gap between urban and rural areas. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); Additionally, massive investments in transportation, energy, and housing are reshaping the nation’s landscape. These initiatives are not just about construction; they reflect a vision for a more integrated and prosperous Nigeria. By prioritizing infrastructure, President Tinubu is laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth that will benefit generations to come. The future of any nation lies in its people, and President Tinubu’s dedication to human capital development is evident through initiatives like the students’ loan scheme and the substantial increase in the national minimum wage by over 100%. These policies are designed to empower the youth, making education more accessible and ensuring that workers receive fair compensation for their efforts. This focus on human capital is vital in a country with a burgeoning population. By investing in education and workforce development, the administration is not only addressing immediate needs but also preparing a generation to meet future challenges. The commitment to enhancing skills and opportunities will undoubtedly yield dividends, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across the nation.Security remains one of the most pressing issues in Nigeria, and President Tinubu’s administration has approached this challenge with courage and resolve. Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of security threats, the government has implemented strategies aimed at addressing both immediate and root causes of insecurity.By strengthening the capacity of security agencies and fostering collaboration with local communities, President Tinubu is working to create a safer environment for all Nigerians. This proactive stance not only aims to protect lives and property but also to build trust between the government and the citizens. What sets President Bola Ahmed Tinubu apart is not just his policies but the unwavering spirit of leadership he embodies. His courage to make tough decisions, such as subsidy removal, reflects a deep understanding of the long-term implications for Nigeria. His determination to see these policies through, despite opposition, showcases a commitment to the greater good. $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); Moreover, his self-confidence inspires those around him, fostering a culture of accountability and innovation within his administration. The far-sightedness with which he approaches governance allows him to foresee potential challenges and opportunities, enabling proactive rather than reactive governance. As we celebrate the two-year anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, it is essential to recognize the transformative journey that is underway in Nigeria. The economic, political, and social achievements are not merely statistics; they represent a vision for a better, more prosperous Nigeria. The path ahead will undoubtedly present new challenges, but with continued courage, determination, and a commitment to inclusive governance, there is no doubt that Tinubu will lead Nigeria towards a brighter future. The foundation has been laid; the journey of transformation continues, and every Nigerian is invited to be part of this historic endeavour. Together, we can achieve greatness.• Dr. Okelekwe, 2023 APC Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central $(document).ready(function(){(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})}); The post Tinubu’s two years in office appeared first on The Sun Nigeria.",

      • "content": "In another troubling case highlighting the persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria, the Oyo State Police Command has declared Ayanfeoluwa Azeez wanted over allegations of engaging in a same-sex relationship, an act criminalized under Nigerian law.According to Police Public Relations Officer CSP Osifeso Adewale, the case was reported on December 25, 2024, by a woman named Isaiah Bose, who submitted photos allegedly depicting Azeez in an intimate moment with another woman, Funke Somoye. The incident reportedly occurred months earlier on March 2 in Ibadan.Funke has since been arrested and reportedly confirmed the consensual relationship. The police are now seeking to arrest Azeez, stating that both women could face charges under Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, which carries a sentence of up to 14 years in prison.CSP Osifeso called on the public to provide any information about Azeez’s whereabouts and emphasised the police’s commitment to enforcing the law. However, human rights advocates view such actions as a blatant violation of privacy, dignity, and freedom. This case underscores the precarious and dangerous reality for LGBTQ+ Nigerians, who live under the constant threat of criminalisation, exposure, and violence simply for who they love. Activists continue to call for the repeal of the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws and for international attention to the human rights abuses they enable..The post Oyo Police seek arrest of woman in same-sex relationship case appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect.",

      • "content": "As the All Progressives Congress (APC) gears up for its upcoming local government chairmanship primary in Lagos State, a significant number of aspirants have voiced strong support for the adoption of consensus candidacy as the preferred method of selection. The primary, set to take place on Saturday at the Lagos APC Secretariat, has prompted party leaders to encourage stakeholders and aspirants across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to prioritise unity by embracing consensus, thereby minimising potential internal disputes.Key figures at the stakeholders’ meeting included Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, GAC Chairman Prince Tajudeen Olusi, and Electoral Committee Chair Mr. Babatunde Ogala, among others.Leading aspirant in Agege, Mr. Sola Osolana, expressed his full support for the consensus model, stating, “The party’s decision is final. There’s no need to contest it. Our leaders have more experience and we trust their judgment.”Former Lagos State House of Assembly member and aspirant, Mr. Yinka Ogundimu, shared a similar sentiment, emphasising the importance of respecting party supremacy.“We’re in a political party. Since no independent candidacy exists, the party’s decision stands,” he said.Aspirant in Agboyi-Ketu, Mrs. Omowunmi Olalekan, also lent her support, declaring, “I will comply with whatever method the party adopts. The unity of the party is paramount.”In Ikeja, Mr. Tayo Aderinola spoke to the democratic nature of the consensus system, stating, “Consensus is democratic. We will follow the party’s guidance and maintain good sportsmanship.”Mr. Ladi Oluwaloni, chairman and aspirant from Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, further endorsed the approach, explaining that it fosters unity and streamlines the electoral process. The post LG Polls: Lagos APC Chairmanship aspirants endorse consensus candidate selection appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect.",

      • "content": "Goodluck Jonathan, the former president, has warned that any attempt or manipulation to impose a one-party system on the nation’s political space will suffocate the country and possibly lead to confusion and anarchy.Jonathan gave the warning in Abuja today, Wednesday, during the memorial lecture and day of tribute for the former federal commissioner for information, and South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark. The ex-president noted that a one-party state may not be an evil thing, as Julius Nyerere of Tanzania used it to unite his country because they have many tribes. However, he noted, it was procedural in Tanzania, and not through manipulation.According to Jonathan, if a one-party state has become desirable for the country, the process must be thorough and systemic, not by accident or political manipulations. The former Nigerian leader’s concern comes against the backdrop of the gale of defections sweeping through the ranks and strongholds of the country’s opposition parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).Jonathan, who described Clark as his father, said that there was no need to look for any replacement for the late Ijaw leader because that would not be achievable, as he was a unique personality with a very sharp memory that no one can beat.Jonathan added that Clark was courageous and ready to take on anybody at any time. The post One-party state ‘ll suffocate Nigerians, lead to anarchy – Jonathan warns appeared first on New Mail Nigeria.",

      • "content": "The Coalition of Former Nigerian Lawmakers (CoFoNiL) has described Tuesday’s protest by a group of lawyers at the National Assembly as a “patriotic move to save democracy.” The lawyers had urged the House of Representatives to take over legislative functions in the Benue and Zamfara State Houses of Assembly. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Rt. Hon. Dapo Olowolagba, CoFoNiL—comprising former federal and state legislators—commended the lawyers for their bold stance, describing them as “heroes of democracy” who acted within the law and in the interest of national unity and constitutional order. “Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the National Assembly to legislate for any state where the House of Assembly is unable to perform its functions,” Olowolagba stated. “This provision is meant to preserve peace and good governance, and it is not an interference, but a constitutional responsibility in situations threatening law and order.” Olowolagba recalled that similar action was taken during the 3rd National Assembly, where the then Governor of Benue State was summoned by the legislature, adding that once the issues were resolved, the governor was asked to take a bow. He warned that both Benue and Zamfara were on the verge of a constitutional crisis that could warrant the declaration of a state of emergency if the National Assembly failed to act swiftly. “We all witnessed the situation in Rivers State in March. What is happening in Zamfara and Benue is no different, except that the President has not yet intervened,” he said. “Both States had the opportunity to reconcile and reinstate unconstitutionally suspended lawmakers. Instead, they allowed the crisis to fester.” According to Olowolagba, the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse actions taken by the Rivers State Assembly under the Martins Amaewhule-led faction—including the 2025 Appropriation Bill and Local Government elections—underscored the legal risks of running a government without a properly constituted legislature. “The Zamfara case is even more troubling,” he added. “For over a year, the Governor has operated without a functional House of Assembly, choosing instead to engage in unnecessary political battles. Ten lawmakers were suspended for raising concerns about the worsening insecurity in the State.” He emphasized that the Coalition supports the lawyers’ call for immediate legislative intervention by the National Assembly to prevent the descent into anarchy. Recall that over 1,000 lawyers, under the banner of the Save Benue and Zamfara Coalition, staged a protest at the National Assembly on Tuesday. They called for federal intervention, citing the suspension of 10 lawmakers in Zamfara and 13 lawmakers in Benue over their refusal to carry out directives allegedly issued by their respective governors. Section 11(4) of the Constitution states: “At any time when any House of Assembly of a State is unable to perform its functions by reason of the situation prevailing in that State, the National Assembly may make such laws for the peace, order, and good government of that State... until such time as the House of Assembly is able to resume its functions...” CoFoNiL urged the National Assembly to act decisively in the interest of democracy and national stability.",

      • "content": "The Presidency has described reports of a growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections as a hallucination, insisting that no credible political party or figure has endorsed such a move. Special Adviser on Policy and Communications to the President, Daniel Bwala, speaking on the coalition, mocked the notion of an emerging alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and other opposition blocs, describing it as a media-driven illusion with no substance. “To say a political coalition is surging when in fact no one is interested in it is a political hallucination,” Bwala wrote on his official X handle on Wednesday. He pointed out that both the PDP Governors’ Forum and the party’s National Working Committee have publicly declared their non-involvement in any coalition talks. Bwala added that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has also recently distanced himself from such negotiations. “Peter Obi said he is not in any coalition talks. Labour Party people said they are not interested. The PDP Governors’ Forum said they’re not in. So who exactly is in this so-called coalition?” Bwala queried. Contrasting the claims of opposition unity, Bwala said the real momentum lies with the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he described as “surging” due to a steady stream of defections, including that of a former PDP vice-presidential candidate. “In contrast, the party surging is APC; receiving defectors left, right, and centre,” he said, adding that, “It is not a coalition, but hallucination.” We’ve got the edge. • "content": "BENIN – The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reaffirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the constitutional authority to designate locations for elections, including for inmates in correctional facilities across the country. Ruling in Victor Emenuwe & 4 ORS (for an behalf of inmates in Nigeria) v. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) & Anor (Appeal No: SC/1135/2019), the apex court held that INEC or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) possesses the discretion to determine how and where inmates will vote, whether by establishing polling units within correctional centres or relocating inmates to the nearest polling units. The court emphasized that logistical or security concerns associated with inmate relocation are not burdens that should preoccupy the inmates themselves. This ruling follows a long-standing legal battle initiated by inmates through their counsel, President Aigbokhan, Freedom of Information (FOI), Counsel, challenging a segment of the Court of Appeal’s decision which left the location of inmate voting to the discretionary powers of INEC and NCoS. The inmates had filed an application for leave to appeal and their grounds of appeal bothering on security risks and logistical impracticalities of the relocating exercise. Speaking to journalists in Benin on the Supreme Court ruling, President Aigbokhan recalled that on December 16, 2014, the Federal High Court declared it unconstitutional for INEC to deny inmates the right to vote, and ordered both INEC and NCoS to put necessary measures in place to facilitate inmate’s voting right in every election. However, according to him, the judgment was limited in scope to the inmates listed in the case. Dissatisfied with the judgment, he said, the inmates appealed to the Court of Appeal, which on December 7, 2018, affirmed inmates’ right to vote, granted representative standing, and directed INEC to update its National Voters Register accordingly. “However, the Court of Appeal declined to compel INEC to create registration centres within prisons, leaving the choice to either establish centres inside correctional facilities or transfer inmates to external polling units. “This ambiguity, and the potential disenfranchisement it presented, led to the Supreme Court appeal” According to the inmates’ lead counsel, President Aigbokhan, “This was a legacy application aimed at straightening some implementation curves. “Electoral rights must be approached with practical and safe arrangements in place. Our appeal focused on the lower courts’ failure to address the numerical and security implications of inmate relocation for voting.” He added: “There is typically restriction of movement on election days to enable INEC and security agencies manage elections smoothly. We hope that the imposition of impractical modalities does not effectively undermine the enforceability of the inmates’ right to vote.” Delivering the ruling on Monday, 5th May 2025, Hon. Justice Adamu Jauro, JSC, struck out the application for leave to appeal on the ground that the right to vote of inmates has been confirmed as constitutional. The Supreme Court has no further obligation to protect it against implementation threats. Any obstruction or deviation from that right, according to the Court, can now be addressed through contempt proceedings.",

Dr Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. He described the development as a desperate effort by enemies of progress who want to drag the state back into what he termed a “discredited status quo.”The governor further alleged that legal tools were being misused by individuals he described as ex-convicts and impersonators posing as lawyers to file petitions filled with falsehoods. He urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to intervene and check what he called unprofessional and damaging practices.Alia, however, assured citizens that his administration remains stable and committed to governance, with legislative activities running smoothly. He emphasised that Benue is secure and that progress is being made in addressing insecurity, especially threats posed by armed herders. He expressed confidence in the support of the Benue people, saying such alleged sabotage would not derail his government’s transformation agenda.“Benue is making significant progress.
