      • "content": "In the heart of Namibia, a dedicated army is working tirelessly to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation. These are our nurses – the frontline warriors of healthcare.International Nurses’ Day, celebrated annually on 12 May is a vital opportunity to recognise, appreciate, and elevate the invaluable contributions of these healthcare heroes. Namibia, like many nations, faces unique healthcare challenges – from combating infectious diseases like HIV-AIDS and tuberculosis to addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and ensuring access to quality care in both urban and remote areas.Amid these complexities, Namibian nurses stand as a crucial force. They are the first point of contact for many seeking medical assistance, providing essential care, administering life-saving treatments, and offering comfort during times of vulnerability.Their dedication extends beyond clinical duties – they are educators, advocates, and often the emotional bedrock for patients and their families.Nurses often work long hours under immense pressure, and their sacrifices often go unnoticed. This day offers a chance for the nation to say a collective ‘thank you’ for their tireless service. It boosts nurses’ morale and motivation as the healthcare sector can be demanding, and nurses often face burnout and emotional fatigue.International Nurses’ Day can also serve as a powerful advocacy tool. It provides an opportunity to shed light on the challenges nurses in Namibia face, such as understaffing, inadequate resources, and the need for continuous professional development.By raising awareness, we can advocate better working conditions, improved training opportunities, and policies that support the nursing profession.Publicly celebrating the achievements and dedication of Namibian nurses can inspire young Namibians to consider nursing as a fulfilling and impactful career path. By showcasing the vital role nurses play in society, we can encourage more individuals to join this essential profession, ensuring a strong and capable healthcare workforce for the future. When nurses feel valued and supported, they are better equipped to provide high-quality care. Investing in the nursing profession through recognition, training, and improved working conditions directly contributes to a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for all Namibians. In conclusion, International Nurses’ Day in Namibia is a crucial moment to celebrate the backbone of our healthcare system, to acknowledge their sacrifices, to advocate for their needs, and to inspire the next generation of caregivers. As Namibia continues to strive for a healthier future for all its citizens, let us ensure that we consistently recognise and support the invaluable contributions of our nurses – every day.Their dedication is the heartbeat of our healthcare system, and their well-being is intrinsically linked to the well-being of our nation.Job Ndeulita, nurse manager, Windhoek Central HospitalThe post Heroes in Scrubs: Why International Nurses’ Day Matters appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Dear madam president, we, the residents of Groot Aub, write to you not as enemies of the state, but as citizens and human beings who have run out of patience. We write to demand what we are constitutionally entitled to: dignity, equality, and access to basic services. All is not well at Groot Aub. In truth, the situation on the ground is dire – especially the worsening water crisis. Communities such as Oshakati Central have endured three months without reliable water supply. The promised water tanks – intended as a temporary solution – have yet to arrive. This is not just neglect; it is a violation of our human rights. The City of Windhoek has declared vast areas of Groot Aub ‘unmapped’ or ‘illegal’ – including Beverly Hills and surrounding areas – effectively cutting them off from access to water, electricity, and other essential services.Over 8 000 residents are trapped in bureaucratic limbo. These citizens are being told, in no uncertain terms, that they do not count. We ask: Are we not Namibians? Are we less human because we are poor and unemployed?Madam president, we urgently request the intervention of your office, as well as that of the prime minister and the minister of urban and rural development. We do not have access to basic services. We are not mapped. Our community lacks development. We see funds being allocated to the city’s budget year after year, but these funds never translate into real development.Instead, administrative offices are built, while our people walk kilometres to fill a 25-litre container with water, live in zinc houses, and suffer in darkness due to a lack of electricity. If we cannot be served by the municipality, let Groot Aub be declared a settlement under the Khomas Regional Council again – the only authority that has ever made a genuine effort to improve our lives. We reject the colonial legacy of regulations and urban planning that continue to suffocate our people. We demand that:The prime minister personally visits Groot Aub to witness the unacceptable conditions and engage with our community. The minister of urban and rural development tasks the current councillors to complete the formalisation process of Groot Aub before November 2025.Political representation for Groot Aub must include residents who live, sleep, and suffer here – not outsiders detached from our daily struggles.A halt to the construction of administrative offices at Groot Aub until the map is finalised and services like water and electricity are delivered. An urgent update of the spatial data (mapping) of all locations at Groot Aub to enable service provision.Elections will soon be upon us, and we are watching closely. Empty promises will no longer sway the people of Groot Aub.If no party is willing to take action, we will remember that at the ballot box.It is time our voices are heard. If development cannot come from the city, then let us be a settlement – with our dignity restored and our rights respected. We will not wait another five years for another committee to ‘familiarise’ itself with our suffering. The fire of development has died at Groot Aub – and not because of its people.E GaingobThe post Groot Aub: A Forgotten People at a Forgotten Place appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Jhonattan Vegas, chasing his first major title, clung to a two-stroke lead after Friday’s second round of the PGA Championship while top-ranked Scottie Scheffler and South Korean Kim Si-woo made late charges at Quail Hollow.Vegas closed with a double bogey to fire a one-under-par 70 and stand on eight-under 134 after 36 holes with France’s Matthieu Pavon shooting 65 to share second with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Kim on 136.“It was a great day,” Vegas said. “I can’t really get too down on myself for making double on 18. I feel like I managed my game really well. I was feeling it out there. It was nice to keep the momentum. The game was there and the feeling was good.“I wasn’t happy to finish with that double on 18 but we have two more days to go.”Kim aced the par-three sixth hole from 252 yards with a five-wood, hitting the longest hole-in-one in major history, and added six birdies against a lone bogey to equal Max Homa for the day’s low round of 64.“It was exciting,” Kim said of the ace. “I hit it like exactly how I wanted. So it was cool and it was pretty memorable hole-in-one in major.”Sharing fifth on 137 were Americans Homa and Scheffler, who had four birdies and a bogey to shoot 68 and pull within three of Vegas.“Most of me is just glad to be close to the lead,” Scheffler said. “There are going to be some bumps in the road. It’s all about how you respond to those. I did a good job of responding to those mistakes and keeping myself in the tournament.”Scheffler’s playing partners in the feature group — second-ranked Masters winner Rory McIlroy and third-ranked defending champion Xander Schauffele — grinded through the final hole just to make the cut on the number at one-over 143.McIlroy, who completed a career Grand Slam with his Masters win, closed bogey-bogey to flirt with missing the weekend, lipping out from three feet for par at 17 and hitting off a hospitality tent roof into rough at 18 and two-putting for bogey from 36 feet to shoot 69.Closing par putts at 17 and 18 from inside four feet gave Schauffele a 71.Vegas, who fired a 64 on Thursday, never lost the lead despite pressure while Pavon and Homa each delivered their career-low major rounds.“That was really very solid,” Pavon said. “Got a nice momentum with the putter early on. A few birdies on the front nine helped me to be more confident on the back nine. Overall it was a super satisfying day.”Homa shot 30 on the same back nine where he fired 39 on Thursday.“I knew the game was good,” Homa said. “Didn’t know I was going to shoot seven-under but I’ll take it.”Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, fired a 68 and will draw upon his major win to try and pad his trophy haul.“The fact I’ve done it before, that’s always a big confidence boost,” he said. “You can lean on that. I’m just happy to be in this position.”World number 70 Vegas, without a top-20 major finish in 16 tries, became the lowest-ranked player to lead a major outright after each of the first two rounds since American Gil Morgan at the 1992 US Open.Vegas bounced his tee shot at the par-three 17th off a bunker rake and onto the green to set up a par, then found a greenside bunker at 18 and missed a three-foot bogey putt.“A little bit of a lucky break there on 17 and finishing quite crappy on 18,” Vegas said. “But overall solid.”Vegas battled a sleepless night sitting on the lead.“Not getting a great sleep and having to come back early put me not in the best mood all day,” Vegas said. “It felt like three hours... I got some sleep but it wasn’t the best.”American Jordan Spieth, needing a win to complete a career Grand Slam, missed the cut on 144.Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, whose 19 made major cuts were the longest active streak, and two-time major winner Justin Thomas were out on 145.The post Vegas clings to PGA lead as Kim, Scheffler charge appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Although the Dâures Green Hydrogen project is in the desert, it is a blessing for the Dâures constituency community. This was said by chief Sakarias Seibeb of the Dâure Daman Traditional Authority in a recent interview. He noted that besides creating jobs for 100 people during the construction stage, his people also benefitted from the vegetables grown at the project’s green scheme.Vegetables were donated to Petrus Ganeb Secondary School and small scale farmers in the community.“In addition, we have a 10% shareholding in the national project – 7.5% for the Tsiseb Conservancy where the project is, and 2.5% for the traditional authority,” he added, thanking president Hage Geingob for initiating the project.“I realised that some people face a bleak future because of unemployment in a desert from which little comes,” he said of his decision to allocate land for the project.Last year Seibeb invited president Nangolo Mbumba to tour the constituency and the green hydrogen project the government is co-funding. The pilot project is envisaged to produce 18 tonnes of green hydrogen and 100 tonnes of green ammonia, and to enable university students to conduct research. On the contentious reopening of the Goantagab Mine at the Sorris Sorris conservancy under his jurisdiction, which is subject to court proceedings instituted by tourism company Ultimate Safaris and two other conservancies, Seibeb said: “Ultimate Safaris found people mining here. There were rhinos, conservation programmes, and there was tourism.Peter Hougaard, operated the mine and Ultimate Safaris did not mind.”He said they now want to control the whole area to the exclusion of the local community.”In December 2023 Hougaard applied for a permit to export a tin stockpile worth about N$2.5 million to China. The chief said he is not against tourism nor mining, but wants the two operations to co-exist because they are both important to the locals, as well as to the national economy.“Both provide jobs and we cannot give one tourism operator exclusive rights over 27 000 hectares,” the retired police officer argued.Ultimate Safaris and Sorris Sorris, Doro !Nawas and Uibasen Twyfelfontein conservancies agreed to establish a joint management area (JMA) covering 27 000 hectares (27 000 footbal fields). The conservancies applied for a 99-year leasehold, but this was rejected. The Namibian Competition Commission also ruled the agreements establishing the JMA as anti-competition and illegal.Ultimate Safaris managing director Tristan Cowley insists he only has a 25-year agreement with the three conservancies.Seibeb dismissed assertions that mining operations would drive away the rhinos – the tourism drawcard – from the area.“The tour operator brings in tourists by plane, and what is the difference between noise from a low-flying plane and that from mining machinery muffled by the high mountains where rhinos do not even go?”He said the two parties must discuss terms of coexistence and accommodate each other.Sorris Sorris conservancy chairperson Elia Manga recently said the ministries of mines and tourism should find a solution to the problem as the two operations resort under them.On the campaign to oust him as chief, Seibeb believes the people instigating his removal are being used in a political campaign.“When I took over, the traditional authority office had nothing, and their bank accounts were closed and I approached people to put money and donate chairs and computers.“The rabble-rousers wrote a petition claiming I had mismanaged funds but were dismissed by a ministerial investigation committee because I am not a signatory to the accounts.”He also denied selling land to the Chinese to mine.“I do not give authority to mine. The mining commissioner does. What happens if I sell land and the person fails to get the mining licence?”The chief denied involvement in the Xinfeng issue where N$50 million allegedly changed hands, but acknowledged giving the Chinese company their initial consent letter before their operations were stopped by the government. He conceded that miners’ contributions to the traditional authority were miserly but blamed the government for it.“There is no provision in the act dictating what companies should pay traditional authorities, and this becomes a ‘take it or leave it issue’”.“We have approached the ministry and they see the loophole and are addressing that,” he said.– matthew@namibian.com.naThe post Green hydrogen project a blessing – chief Seibeb appeared first on The Namibian.",

Our focus is on local content development and building financial ecosystems that will empower Namibian businesses, entrepreneurs and communities to take their place in the oil and gas value chain,” she says.Bank Windhoek is working with clients in the sector, offering financial solutions that are responsive to the unique needs and timelines of the industry.“As the sector evolves, we remain engaged, not as passive observers, but to unlock inclusive growth and long-term national value. We will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that oil and gas investment serves as a catalyst for sustainable development, with benefits that extend beyond the rigs and wells reaching into communities, local industries and the broader economy of Namibia,” Hans says. The post Namibian banks eye oil and gas sector appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Investent inflows from China have declined by N$5.9 billion. It currently stands at N$4.1 billion, from N$10 billion recorded before 2024.This is according to a foreign direct investment (FDI) report by the Bank of Namibia (BoN) and the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) .The main reason for this decrease is that Chinese foreign-owned mining companies in Namibia borrowed much less money from their parent companies compared to the previous year.“Inflows from China remained among the top three, although declining largely due to lower uptake of intercompany debt by foreign-owned enterprises operating in the mining sector,” reads the report.Namibia’s net FDI inflows were mainly from China, the Arab Gulf states, the United Kingdom and France between 2022 and 2024.The majority of these investments were for oil and gas exploration and appraisal activity.Additionally there was a net FDI inflow of N$4.1 billion from South Africa in 2023, from merger and acquisition transactions between entities in the manufacturing sector.Other major source countries of FDI inflows were Canada and Mauritius.“These are investments linked to mining activity, especially in the form of increased reinvestment of earnings by foreign direct investors,” notes the report. Moreover, there was a recorded increase in the transport and storage sector during 2024.This was from foreign investments associated with the concessioning of the Walvis Bay port.BoN governer Johannes !Gawaxab says Namibia’s investments have come a long way since independence, with a decline experienced until 2020.Between 1998 and 2008 Namibia attracted about N$25.7 billion in net FDI inflows.“Much of it was in equity financing for projects in the manufacturing sector, including the Skorpion Zinc Refinery and diamond processing entities,” says !Gawaxab. For 10 years between 2009 and 2018, FDI momentum remained strong with the country attracting net FDI inflows amounting to N$56.5 billion. This was driven by greenfield investments in mining, particularly in uranium and gold.Additionally, the strong economic performance between 2010 and 2015 boosted investor confidence, leading to increased foreign investment in the financial, and wholesale and retail trade sectors. However, Namibia experienced a decline in investments between 2016 and 2020.“Between 2016 and 2020, Namibia faced a period of economic difficulty, characterised by declining investment inflows and net outflows due to structural challenges and external shocks,” says !Gawaxab.Namibia has experienced a strong rebound since 2021. From that year onward, cumulative net FDI inflows reached N$114.9 billion. This number is expected to increase as private sector projects to the value of N$224.7 billion, facilitated by the NIPDB, are in the pipeline. In 2024 alone, net FDI stood at N$37 billion.Foreign-owned enterprises employed an estimated 62 817 people in 2023, up from 55 982 in 2019.Additionally, foreign-owned enterprises accounted for approximately 11.5% of total employment, according to the 2023 Labour Force Survey.Job creation was mainly driven by wholesale and retail, mining and quarrying, and financial services. The post Chinese investments in Namibia decline by N$5.9 billion appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "As Namibia continues developing its approach to business turnaround, businesses and financial institutions need to take proactive steps to strengthen financial resilience.By implementing effective strategies, struggling businesses can recover, rebuild, and contribute to the country’s long-term economic stability.Business turnaround is crucial in stabilising financially distressed companies preventing closures. Banks and financial institutions are key in identifying financial challenges early, working alongside businesses to restore stability. While Namibia does not yet have formal business turnaround legislation, some financial institutions, including Bank Windhoek, have introduced structured support systems to assist businesses facing financial difficulties. At Bank Windhoek, through our structured approach, we aim to help businesses navigate financial distress and regain stability. This initiative protects jobs and livelihoods, strengthening Namibia’s business sector. Most businesses face financial challenges at some point, which may manifest as missed loan payments, declining revenue, or difficulty covering everyday operational costs. If left unaddressed, these issues can escalate into more serious financial distress. Business turnaround aims to identify these warning signs early and take corrective action before a company reaches a critical stage.Business turnaround aims to detect these warning signs early and take corrective action before a company reaches a critical stage.Banks and financial institutions monitor indicators such as:Frequent delays or missed repayments signal potential cash flow problems.A consistent drop in sales or income may indicate operational challenges or market downturns.Difficulty in covering everyday expenses, such as salaries, rent, and supplier payments, suggests liquidity issues.A growing debt burden without a clear repayment plan raises concerns about financial sustainability.A steady decline in profitability can point to inefficiencies, rising costs, or competitive pressures.Dependence on short-term financing to cover ongoing expenses may indicate deeper financial trouble.Late submission of financial statements or tax filings may indicate disorganisation or financial distress.Falling behind on tax payments or entering into repeated payment arrangements with tax authorities may signal worsening financial pressure and potential regulatory consequences.Once financial strain becomes clear, a recovery-focused process begins. The aim is to help the business regain control of its finances and remain operational. This process generally includes:Understanding the situation: The business’s challenges are reviewed to identify what needs to be addressed.Planning the response: The recovery plan may involve adjusting how the business manages its income and expenses, revisiting its financial commitments, or reconsidering allocating resources.Taking Action: The plan is implemented, and progress is tracked regularly to determine what’s working and where adjustments might be needed.A successful business turnaround relies on business owners’ commitment and participation. While banks and financial institutions provide support, the responsibility to drive recovery ultimately rests with the business itself.Business owners must fully cooperate by sharing accurate financial information, ensuring that decisions are based on a clear understanding of the company’s situation, as well as follow the agreed-upon recovery plan and make necessary adjustments as circumstances change.Business owners should proactively discuss any challenges that arise to allow for timely interventions. Without full engagement, the likelihood of recovery decreases, limiting the bank’s ability to provide further assistance.Keeping businesses operational benefits employees, customers, suppliers and financial institutions. When businesses remain open, jobs are preserved, ensuring financial stability for employees and their families. At the same time, communities continue to access essential goods and services.Banks also benefit, as early intervention helps mitigate financial losses and strengthens the overall economic landscape. For small and medium-sized enterprises in Namibia, business turnaround presents an opportunity to regain stability without resorting to extreme measures like liquidation.Business turnaround provides companies a structured approach to overcoming financial challenges and restoring stability.By identifying issues early, collaborating with financial advisers, and implementing well-planned recovery strategies, businesses can navigate financial strain and position themselves for renewed growth and long-term success.– Christof Steenkamp is Bank Windhoek’s business turnaround specialistThe post The Meaning of Business Turnaround for Namibian Businesses appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Aston Villa bolstered their bid to qualify for the Champions League as they beat Tottenham 2-0 to climb into fifth place in the Premier League on Friday.Unai Emery’s side had no margin for error at Villa Park as the race for top five places approaches a dramatic conclusion.Second-half goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara ensured Villa’s battle to play in Europe’s elite club competition will go down to the last day of the season.Fourth-placed Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Friday means Villa still need sixth-placed Manchester City — one point behind Emery’s men — to lose against Bournemouth in their game in hand on Tuesday to be in control of their own destiny.Villa have won five of their last six games and one more victory at Manchester United on May 25 — plus a City loss in one of their remaining two matches — would seal their target of finishing in the top five.“We won and we are on a run but still have work to do. We have to ready. We have a chance to play in the Champions League,” Emery said.“We were consistent, demanding and when we scored the first goal, they gave up. We needed to manage the 90 minutes and we worked it well.“We are in a good moment. We are being demanding. We can get Champions League — fantastic.”Tottenham were far more concerned with their own route into the Champions League — winning the Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao on Wednesday.Languishing in 17th place after their 21st league defeat this term, Ange Postecoglou’s troubled team are set for their worst finish since being relegated from the top-flight in 1976-77.Tottenham are without a win in their last six league matches, losing five times in that dismal streak.Already without injured trio Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall for the final, Postecoglou rested a host of key players including Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur.Postecoglou had admitted Tottenham couldn’t afford any more fitness problems, but his understudies succumbed to the latest lacklustre loss in a woeful season that could end in the Australian’s sacking regardless of the result against United. Before kick-off, Villa fans posed with a replica of the European Cup trophy the club won in 1982.That final triumph against Bayern Munich remains Villa’s finest achievement, but this season’s memorable run to the Champions League quarter-finals excited the club’s supporters. For Villa to remain in contention for another campaign among Europe’s elite, victory against Tottenham was essential.Tottenham captain Son Heung-min was back in the starting line-up after a month out injured and the South Korea forward went close early on, cutting in from the left flank for a curler that flashed over.Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez had to make an alert save to keep out Wilson Odobert’s audacious back-heeled effort from Mathys Tel’s cross.Emery’s men hit back after those escapes and Morgan Rogers forced a superb save from Tottenham keeper Antonin Kinsky, who clawed away the midfielder’s flick before it could bounce in.Villa’s failure to make the breakthrough in the first half against a team with their minds elsewhere raised the tension levels after the interval, but Konsa eased the mounting anxiety in the 59th minute.John McGinn’s corner was flicked on by Ollie Watkins and Konsa took advantage of Tottenham’s slow response as he swept a composed finish past Kinsky.Villa went for the kill and Watkins’ close-range shot was repelled by Kinsky’s fine stop.Kamara put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute, taking Rogers’ pass and lashing home from the edge of the area. The post Villa sink Spurs to bolster bid to reach Champions League appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Chelsea ensured that qualification for the Champions League remains in their own hands as Marc Cucurella’s winner beat Manchester United 1-0 to climb to fourth in the Premier League.United are gearing up for next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham but ran the Blues close as Ruben Amorim named a stronger line-up than expected. However, the Red Devils ultimately slipped to an 18th league defeat of the season and remain 16th in the table.Chelsea and Aston Villa, who beat Spurs 2-0 in Friday’s other Premier League match, both leapfrog Manchester City into the top five.City have a game in hand at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday as they face Crystal Palace in Saturday’s FA Cup final. But Chelsea will be assured of a return to Europe’s top competition after a two-year absence should they beat Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season.United’s miserable season can only be saved by victory in Bilbao in five days’ time but Amorim resisted the temptation to rest his key men at Stamford Bridge.Captain Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo and Casemiro were among those to start as Amorim named close to his strongest available side.Chelsea were without a recognised striker due to Nicolas Jackson’s suspension and the continued absence due to injury of Christopher Nkunku.Teenager Tyrique George, a natural winger, was forced to lead the line in an unfamiliar role up front and the Blues’ lack of a focal point saw them easily snuffed out.United’s bright start was nearly rewarded when Harry Maguire fired in Fernandes’ inviting cross only for a VAR review to show the centre-back had strayed centimetres offside.Chelsea’s best effort before half-time saw Reece James’ long-range effort come back off the post.Cole Palmer was the one creative spark for Enzo Maresca’s men and nearly produced a moment of magic with a dipping shot that Andre Onana palmed into the path of Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine somehow fired over over with the goal gaping and was grateful to the offside flag for sparing his blushes.A match littered with stoppages for minor injuries and VAR checks did not allow either side to hit their rhythm.United started strongly again in the second period but failed to make it count as Mason Mount fired wide on his return to Stamford Bridge, before Fernandes blasted over.On the hour mark a VAR review came to the visitors’ aid when referee Chris Kavanagh initially pointed to the penalty spot after a challenge between George and Onana. However, replays showed the goalkeeper clearly played the ball and the spot-kick was overturned. With Chelsea’s forward players lacking inspiration, the match-winning moment was created and converted by their full-backs 20 minutes from time.James turned nearly on the edge of the box and clipped in a cross that Cucurella met perfectly to head in his seventh goal of the season.Noni Madueke should have doubled the lead within seconds when he skewed wide after a slick pass from Palmer. That miss could have been costly had Robert Sanchez not denied Diallo at his near post. But Chelsea held their nerve to edge towards the brink of a return to the riches and glamour of the Champions League. The post Cucurella steers Chelsea towards the Champions League in Man Utd win appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Jannik Sinner set up a blockbuster Italian Open final with Carlos Alcaraz by beating Tommy Paul 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 on Friday.World number one Sinner fought back from a set down in front of a packed crowd to continue his march towards a first title at the Foro Italico. After a strangely slow start, Sinner again showed good form on centre court where, since returning to action last week from a three-month doping ban, he has taken his unbeaten run to 26 matches. And the 23-year-old will face down Alcaraz, the last man to beat Sinner in the final at the China Open in early October, with all eyes on another potential final between the pair at the French Open next month.A win for Sinner against his rival would see the men’s Rome title go to an Italian for the first time since Adriano Panatta in 1976.“If I want to win Sunday I have to play one of my best tennis for sure,” said Sinner.“Carlos has played incredible tennis today, so let’s see what’s coming but from my side you know incredible to be here in the final.”Alcaraz booked his place in the showdown by beating Sinner’s countryman Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).The four-time Grand Slam champion overcame Musetti and the windy conditions in just over two hours to reach his fourth final of the season.“I’m going to have dinner, but my phone is going to be there watching (Sinner’s) match,” said Alcaraz after his win.“I have to know against who I’m going to play. I have to watch the match and see how they are going to play.”Musetti was beaten by Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final last month and fell to his fifth straight defeat to the Spaniard after a frustrating display. And he believes that Alcaraz will have the better of it against Sinner if he brings his top form on Sunday evening.“I really rate Carlos. I think on clay that the best version of Carlos is favourite against anyone... that includes Jannik,” he told reporters.Paul rattled off the first five games in 21 minutes in a near replica of what Sinner did to Casper Ruud on Thursday, closing out the first set in less than half an hour. The last time Sinner lost a set 6-1 was in the quarter-finals of the US Open against Daniil Medvedev, a match he won on his way to his second Grand Slam triumph.Sinner looked a shadow of the player who dominated tennis throughout 2024 right up to the start of his suspension, which was agreed with the World Anti-Doping Agency in early February. But frm nowhere he came roaring back in the second set, finally forcing Paul back with some deep baseline shots of his own and his first aces of the match to win the second set to love and level the match. It was a complete role reversal with Paul now the one being thrown around the court, the world number 12 winning just 12 points in the second set and looking bewildered at how quickly the momentum shifted.Paul then handed Sinner the initiative with his second double fault of the night in game two of the third set. The Italian eventually won nine games in a row and marched on to victoryEarlier, Jasmine Paolini continued her bid to win the women’s singles and doubles titles in Rome after reaching her second final of the week, this time alongside fellow Italian Sara Errani.Paolini and Errani, the reigning doubles champions, will meet Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in the final on Sunday, before which Paolini could already be crowed singles champion.Late bloomer Paolini takes on Coco Gauff on Saturday aiming for her second 1000 series title at the age of 29 and to become the first Italian women to win in Rome since Raffaella Reggi in 1985.The post Sinner lines up Alcaraz showdown in Italian Open final appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "A Zambezi Regional Council employee and two alleged accomplices in a fraud case remain in custody after appearing in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Friday. They were arrested on charges involving N$4.2 million. The three suspects, Gurion Siseho (52), Grodinah Liswaniso, and Jimmy Simataa, were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday in connection with a fraudulent drought-relief food supply scheme. The ACC’s investigations have established that on 3 September 2024, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), through the Directorate of Disaster Risk Management, awarded a purchase order worth N$4 million to a private company. The company was supposed to supply 20 138 bags of 20kg maize meal to the Zambezi Regional Council for the drought-relief programme.Simataa, on 28 October 2024, allegedly conspired with Siseho and Liswaniso to falsely certify key documents, including a purchase order, receipt of the store issue and receipt voucher, and an invoice confirming that the 20 138 bags of maize meal had been received at a warehouse.Following the submission of the documents, the OPM processed and paid the full amount of N$4 228 980 to the company on 11 November 2024.The bags of maize have not been delivered to date.Simataa allegedly further received a gratification payment of N$350 000 for certifying the false documents. It is also claimed that the suspects fraudulently secured the contract by using documents from another private company and submitting forged contracts and agreements.Their case was postponed until 19 May for formal bail applications.State prosecutor Sylvious Malange said bail should be denied because it’s not in the interest of the public or the administration of justice. He also said fraud is a serious offence and the suspects may interfere with investigations and witnesses.Additionally, there is a high risk that they may flee. The suspects appeared before magistrate Beatrice Sibalatani. The post Zambezi employee, two co-accused remain in custody over N$4 million fraud appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Chad's former prime minister and opposition leader, Succès Masra, has been arrested over alleged links to clashes which took place on Wednesday in the south west of the country, a public prosecutor has said. He is suspected of spreading hateful messages on social media linked to the violence in which at least 42 people died, Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye said. Masra's Transformers party said he had been \"kidnapped\" by military officers in the early hours of the morning\" and denounced his detention, which it says was \"carried out outside of any known judicial procedure\". The government has not yet commented on Masra's arrest. Masra is a fierce critic of President Mahamat Déby and claimed to have defeated him in elections last year. Masra said his victory had been stolen \"from the people\" although the official results said Déby had won with 61% of the vote. Wednesday's clashes broke out in the village of Mandakao, in Logone Occidental province near the Cameroonian border. \"Messages were circulated, notably on social networks, calling on the population to arm themselves against other citizens,\" Mr Kedelaye said. It is not entirely clear what caused the violence, but one source told the AFP news agency that it is believed it was triggered by a land dispute between farmers from the Ngambaye community and Fulani herdsmen. There has been a troubling recent pattern of violence between local farmers and herders, with the farmers accusing the latter of grazing animals on their land. More than 80 others have also been detained in connection with the clashes. Masra briefly served as interim prime minister of the transitional government between January and May 2024. His party boycotted legislative polls last December due to concerns over the transparency of the electoral process. The Déby family has ruled Chad for more than three decades. The military installed Déby as Chad's leader after his father, Idriss Déby Itno, was killed by rebels in 2021.

Both matches will be streamed live on FIFA+.Zambia were always in control of their semi-final, though it did take until the 36th minute for them to take the lead through Natasha Kasema. She added a second late on, while there were also goals for Hellen Banda, Beatrice Njobvu and Grace Phiri.Zimbabwe’s consolation came from Dee Mapuwa, who netted her fifth of the tournament to move into second place in the Golden Boot race behind Lesotho’s Nancy Lebang, who has seven. The second semi-final was a much tighter affair and was goalless until the 84th minute when Talandira Kachala’s free-kick into the box from all of 40 yards beat everybody and ended up in the back of the net.Malawi were deserved winners having dominated large parts of the game and provided more attacking threat in the final third.Zambia will be aiming for their third Cosafa under-17 Girls’ Championship title and second in a row having claimed the 2024 tournament in South Africa in December.Malawi will be appearing in their first final after finishing in third on home soil in 2022. On that occasion they lost on penalties to Zambia in the semifinals following a 2-2 draw, so Saturday’s clash provides the opportunity for some revenge. The post Zambia, Malawi to contest Cosafa u17 Girls final appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo says it feels \"crazy\" to have been nominated for the Premier League's player of the season award. The 25-year-old Cameroon international has scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 36 league outings for the Bees, who are chasing a place in European competition for the first time. \"I didn't really expect it,\" Mbeumo told BBC Sport Africa. \"I know I have [had] a good season, but I was surprised when I've seen my name there.\" Mbeumo is one of eight players on the shortlist for the award, with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who leads the top flight scoring charts, chief among the other contenders. Salah's team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice round off the list. Mbeumo joined Brentford from Troyes in August 2019 and has played a vital role in turning the west London club from a Championship side into contenders for a European spot. He has netted 40 Premier League goals in all, making him Brentford's second-highest goalscorer since promotion. \"This club bring me everything,\" Mbeumo said. \"They gave me confidence and I feel very happy to achieve this season here. With the group we have, it is just such a good life here. \"Players other than me could have deserved a nomination as well. That shows that the club is improving a lot.\" The Bees sit eighth in the table - a finish which could secure a place in the Europa Conference League next season - and boss Thomas Frank is in the running for the Premier League manager of the year award.",

      • "content": "A Walvis Bay-based fishing company is suing a close corporation, a company and two other defendants for N$57 million in the Windhoek High Court, claiming 2 100 tonnes of its fish was stolen from a cold storage facility at Walvis Bay.In a document filed at the High Court, the Pengeko Eeshi Fishing is claiming that it suffered damages in an amount of N$57.2 million due to the theft of its fish products and the failure to properly handle the storage of its products.Pengeko Eeshi Fishing is suing the close corporation Wakondo Investments, its managing director, Helvi Nujoma, the company Afromerge Investments and its managing director, Alexander Woermann, in a claim filed at the end of October last year.In Pengeko Eeshi Fishing’s claim, the company’s lawyer, Karel Gaeb, says the company and Wakondo Investments concluded an oral lease agreement for cold storage facilities for the company’s fish products in December 2023.Gaeb also says Pengeko Eeshi Fishing caught about 13 531 tonnes of fish between December 2023 and March last year, and placed some 9 202 tonnes of this fish in cold storage with Wakondo Investments.During that period, Gaeb says, Afromerge Investments and Woermann “developed a keen interest in [Pengeko Eeshi Fishing’s] business and expressed a desire to purchase large quantities of fish” from the company.Afromerge Investments and Woermann paid Pengeko Eeshi Fishing for about 2 000 tonnes of fish bought by them, it is stated in the fishing company’s court claim.According to Gaeb, Afromerge Investments and Woermann also instructed Wakondo Investments and Nujoma to release about 2 000 tonnes of fish of Pengeko Eeshi Fishing from cold storage, to be loaded onto lorries of Afromerge Investments, allegedly without the fishing company having ordered the release of the fish products to Afromerge Investments. This is claimed to have caused financial damages totalling N$57.2 million to Pengeko Eeshi Fishing. The company is claiming as well that Wakondo Investments and Nujoma failed to disclose to it that the storage facilities in which its fish products were stored belonged to Afromerge Investments and Woermann.Afromerge Investments and Woermann have notified the court that they are opposing the legal action being taken by Pengeko Eeshi Fishing.A case planning order on the exchange of pleadings in the matter was issued by judge Orben Sibeya on Thursday this week.Sibeya postponed the case to 17 July for a case management hearing. The post Fishing company sues for N$57 million, alleges theft of products appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "An Angolan national remains in custody after appearing in the Okakarara Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend. The body of Siegfriedine Tjihenuna (36) was found on 13 May, buried behind the house of Lucas Shitaleni (35), in a shallow grave.Shitaleni appeared before magistrate Abel Sankwasa on charges of murder, concealment of death and defeating the course of justice.Prosecutor Nguvitjita Mujoro, who represented the state, strongly objected to granting Shitaleni bail, citing the seriousness of the matter and the early stage of the police investigation.Shitaleni, who opted to defend himself, is remanded in custody and his case has been postponed to 6 August.Police head of community affairs in the region senior inspector Maureen Mbeha says Tjihenuna was reported missing on 12 May, after she was last seen between 29 April and 12 May at Okarui village in the Okakarara area.“Her relatives reported her missing on 12 May, and a file was opened at the Okakarara Police Station on the same day,” she says.An investigation team was formed and a search commenced. Information emerged that Tjihenuna was last seen with Shitaleni on 29 April. When confronted, Shitaleni, however, denied this.“On 13 May, a team of police officers, accompanied by the deceased’s family members, searched the victim’s village and the suspect’s house, where approximately 200m from the suspect’s residence, the decomposed body of a woman buried in a shallow grave was found,” Mbeha says.Relatives identified the body as that of Tjihenuna.Shitaleni was charged on Thursday.Hundreds of Okakarara residents on Friday handed over a petition to Mujoro, opposing bail for Shitaleni. They said he also has a pending stock theft case at Otjituuo.Police investigations into both matters are ongoing. The post Accused man stays in custody in Okakarara murder case appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - Evertise Digital)Nature-focused retreat sees major upgrades to meet rising demand for eco-conscious accommodation in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal region. SHONGWENI VALLEY, South Africa - A longtime boutique guesthouse in KwaZulu-Natal's Shongweni Valley has reemerged as a modern nature retreat following an extensive renovation in 2025. Treehouse River Lodge , originally established more than 15 years ago, now offers a refreshed option for travelers seeking peaceful, eco-conscious accommodation near Durban. Located along the banks of the Sterkspruit River and a short drive from the Shongweni Farmers Market, the upgraded lodge combines tranquil seclusion with convenient access to urban areas. Treehouse River Lodge now features four private chalets in three categories: two family-friendly self-catering river chalets, one couples' river chalet, and a budget garden-view chalet. Each unit includes an en-suite bathroom, daily housekeeping, and access to amenities such as secure parking, a rock pool, and a riverside Boma dining area. The property is approximately 15 minutes from Hillcrest and 45 minutes from central Durban. Founder and manager Susan Bakker said the renovation was inspired by a growing preference for small-scale, eco-conscious guesthouses in Durban 's surrounding areas.“We reimagined Treehouse River Lodge to give visitors a peaceful place to disconnect while staying connected to nature,” Bakker said.“We're not trying to be a resort. We're a riverside sanctuary designed for couples, families, and small groups who want meaningful rest.” The lodge has begun working with local partners, including Hillcrest-based Kemayu Spa & Aesthetics, to offer discounted wellness services to guests. While there is no full-service restaurant on site, breakfast can be arranged in the Boma area, and private dinners are available by prior booking. Bakker said she hopes the upgraded lodge will help bring greater visibility to Shongweni and its surroundings.“KwaZulu-Natal is full of hidden gems, and Shongweni is one of them. With Treehouse River Lodge, we aim to highlight this area's riverine ecology, artisanal markets, and its proximity to the city,” she said. The chalets are shaded by native trees and overlook the Sterkspruit River, where sightings of African clawless otters and fish eagles are possible. The property also attracts bird watchers, with the Western Barn Owl known to nest nearby. Treehouse River Lodge joins a growing number of small-scale B&Bs in Durban prioritizing personalized stays and sustainability over high-volume tourism models. It adds to the region's expanding list of guesthouses catering to travelers looking for meaningful, nature-based accommodation in South Africa . About Treehouse River Lodge Treehouse River Lodge is a family-run boutique guesthouse in Shongweni Valley, KwaZulu-Natal. First opened over 15 years ago, the lodge was renovated in 2025 to promote sustainable tourism through local partnerships and nature-based experiences. • "description": "(MENAFN - African Press Organization)LUANDA, Angola, May 16, 2025/APO Group/ --–I thought I would not survive,– says Abel Kanivete, from Angola's Cuanza Sul province on the country's West ...",
      • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization)LUANDA, Angola, May 16, 2025/APO Group/ -- “I thought I would not survive,” says Abel Kanivete, from Angola's Cuanza Sul province on the country's West coast.“There were so many people in the cholera treatment centre. I was afraid the nurses could not care for everyone, but they did, and I am alive because of them.” Kanivete is one of the more than 18 000 Angolans affected by the current cholera outbreak, declared in late January 2025. In coordination with the Ministry of Health and partners, World Health Organization (WHO) deployed a rapid response team to Cuanza Sul from 27 April to 5 May 2025. The team provided technical support to help control the outbreak and support affected communities in the province. During this time, WHO public health experts trained over 150 health workers and local health officials from across the province in cholera case management. WHO also provided technical support for the establishment and operation of cholera treatment centres. “Our work has helped health authorities to detect cases early, build local capacity and involve communities in prevention and response,” says Dr Kuku Muhao, WHO Emergency Officer in Angola.“Local officials have trained staff on the basic infrastructure needed to prevent new infections and move towards ending the cholera outbreak.” WHO's rapid response team also supported water safety and sanitation efforts. Water quality tests were conducted on the Cambongo River, the main water source in the region. Technicians from the Provincial Water Directorate received training in chlorine preparation and safe burial practices to break the chain of transmission and protect at-risk communities. Over 1470 people in the province, including volunteers, religious leaders, Red Cross members and health workers were trained to identify cholera symptoms and promote cholera prevention, such as washing hands and food and water preparation. In addition, 289 local leaders, including administrative, traditional, and religious and political representatives participated in awareness-raising activities to strengthen coordination across sectors. A community campaign entitled“One latrine per family” was launched to promote the construction and use of latrines as a key public health measure. Despite this progress, challenges remain. Many communities still lack access to safe clean water, and adequate sanitation. Reaching remote areas with essential services remains difficult in parts of Cuanza Sul and other provinces. Since the confirmation of the outbreak, cholera has spread to 17 of the country's 21 provinces. The outbreak has already caused almost 600 deaths, with a high case fatality rate of 3.2%, exceeding the 1% threshold which indicates early and adequate treatment of cholera patients. “The results of the WHO intervention are visible and encouraging. We have seen improvements in terms of technical capacity, community involvement and institutional coordination across the country. However, ongoing coordinated and sustainable action is needed. Strengthening international cooperation and support is urgent,” says Dr Indrajit Hazarika, WHO Representative in Angola. • "content": "A total of 16 Namibian companies have expressed interest in contributing to setting up a national airline.Ministry of Works and Transport spokesperson Julius Ngweda on Friday said: “The ministry deeply appreciates the enthusiastic response and willingness of the public to assist in this significant national endeavour.“The ministry wishes to inform the public that a dedicated technical committee has been established to guide the process of setting up the national airline.“This committee is comprised of individuals with specialised knowledge and expertise in various areas of aviation, ensuring a thorough and informed approach to this complex undertaking.”Namibia’s former national airline, Air Namibia, was liquidated in 2021 and plans to establish a new national airline by December 2026 were announced by the government earlier this year.Works and transport minister Veiko Nekundi last month said the new airline would significantly contribute to the country’s economy.“Air Namibia is not coming back. We are not reviving Air Namibia. We are bringing back a national airline, and not Air Namibia. Those are two different things. Air Namibia is gone. It’s killed by those who wanted to kill it, but a national airline will be in Namibia,” he said.Ngweda on Friday said the technical committee has been actively engaged in discussing the establishment of the airline within the allocated time frame.“These meetings are crucial in laying the groundwork for a sustainable and successful national carrier that will serve the best interests of Namibia. It is important to reiterate that the establishment of a new national airline is a matter of national interest.“The ministry and the technical committee are fully cognisant of the high level of interest that exists among the nation at large, encompassing both valuable collaborative suggestions and a simple desire to contribute,” he said.He explained that while the ministry is grateful for the proactive engagement of the public, the technical committee will strategically reach out to the nation for advice and assistance when required. The committee will initiate these outreach efforts at the appropriate stages of the process to ensure public input is effectively integrated into planning and development.“There is thus no need for individuals to reach out on a daily basis,” Ngweda said. The post 16 Namibian companies keen to revive national airline appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization)GABORONE, Botswana, May 16, 2025/APO Group/ -- The African Development Bank ( ) has approved a $304 million loan to Botswana to support the southern African country in managing mounting fiscal challenges and implementing key governance and economic reforms. The funding, approved by the Bank Group's Board of Directors on Wednesday, will finance the Governance and Economic Resilience Support Programme (GERSP), a one-year general budget support operation covering the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The facility aims to cushion Botswana from the financial shock triggered by declining diamond revenues, while advancing critical reforms to enhance fiscal transparency, boost revenue collection, and promote private sector-led growth. Botswana's economy contracted by 1.7% in 2024, primarily due to weak global demand for diamonds, which account for approximately 80% of the country's exports. The country's fiscal deficit widened -- from a balanced budget in 2022/23 to 4.7% of GDP in the 2023/24 financial year–– and is projected to reach 6.7% in the current fiscal year. “This operation comes at a critical time for Botswana,\" said Moono Mupotola, Deputy Director General for Southern Africa and Country Manager at the African Development Bank Group. \"We will work with the new administration to implement reforms that will deepen fiscal sustainability, strengthen transparency, and create a more business-friendly environment for economic diversification.\" The GERSP is structured around two main pillars: Strengthening fiscal sustainability and transparency, and stimulating economic growth. It includes measures to increase domestic revenue mobilization, curb illicit financial flows, and enhance public expenditure efficiency and accountability. The program also targets support for micro, small, and medium enterprises, particularly those led by women and youth, to create jobs and reduce inequality. The operation is a transitional measure to address short-term budget pressures while engaging with Botswana's new government, elected in November 2024, on long-term development goals. “The African Development Bank is committed to supporting Botswana's ambitious socioeconomic development agenda through credible and transformational reforms, project and program financing, and continuous policy dialogue”, said Abdoulaye Coulibaly, the Bank's Director of Governance and Economic Reforms. The new loan builds on the Bank's prior support to Botswana, including the Economic Recovery Support Programme implemented in 2021-2022, which had $200 million cofinancing from the OPEC Fund for International Development. The current program aligns with the Bank's Country Strategy Paper for Botswana (2022-2026), which prioritizes building economic resilience through support for economic governance and private sector development. • "content": "Kevin De Bruyne can add another honour to his haul as Manchester City’s most decorated player of all time with a fitting farewell in Saturday’s FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. The Belgian’s trophy-littered decade in Manchester will come to an end at the conclusion of the Premier League season. But Wembley’s showpiece is the 33-year-old’s final chance to lift silverware at the club where he grew into one of world’s best players.A six-time Premier League winner, De Bruyne could add a third FA Cup to his five League Cups and 2023 Champions League win with City.He has expressed his “surprise” that City did not seek to extend his stay, filled with the belief that he can still perform at the highest level.De Bruyne rolled back the years when City rallied from 2-0 down to thrash Palace 5-2 just last month with a goal and an assist.City will be hoping for more of the same to give him a fitting farewell and save some face from a season to forget for Pep Guardiola’s men. After an unprecedented run of four consecutive Premier League titles, City are 18 points adrift of champions Liverpool and embroiled in a battle just to finish in the top five to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.De Bruyne’s decline has played a factor in City’s downturn.Of his 108 goals and 177 assists for the club in 419 appearances, only six and eight respectively have come this season. However, he remains “irreplaceable” due to his impact in City’s rise to being the dominant force in English football, according to the club’s prolific striker Erling Haaland.“To get the balls from him is a dream,” said Haaland. “It has been really special playing with him. Such a joy, and I am going to do everything I can to have this joy in the last few games.“The future will be different with different players. When Kevin leaves we will need someone to replace him, although Kevin is irreplaceable in so many ways.”Guardiola has appeared almost apologetic for overlooking De Bruyne at times this season as he searched for solutions to fill the gaps in City’s ageing midfield.“The gratitude I have, we have, is huge,” said Guardiola.“Kevin is the player in the history of the club with the most titles and that defines what Kevin has done with us.”A giant mural of De Bruyne alongside his trophy haul as a City player was unveiled in Manchester city centre on Thursday.Guardiola has suggested a statue outside the club’s Etihad Stadium is also just a matter of time. But after a decade most characterised by a relentless thirst to keep on winning, the most fitting tribute would be for De Bruyne to go out with another medal around his neck.“The whole team only has one thought and that’s to try and get the trophy and to make the day special for Kevin,” said City midfielder Mateo Kovacic.“For what he’s done, he deserves to leave like a champion which he obviously is.“He is a massive figure in City’s success, and he will be remembered as one of the best.”The post De Bruyne seeks fitting Man City farewell in FA Cup final appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "History beckons for Crystal Palace at Wembley in Saturday’s FA Cup final as Manchester City have one final shot at avoiding a rare trophyless season under Pep Guardiola.Twice FA Cup runners-up, Palace have never won a major trophy in their 119-year history. The Eagles sense this may finally be their time up against a City side far from their former glories of Guardiola’s trophy-laden reign.Palace warmed up for the Wembley showpiece by cruising to a 2-0 win at Tottenham last weekend to equal their record of 49 Premier League points with two games of the season to spare. The south London club finished in the top 10 for the first time in the Premier League era last season after just a few months under Oliver Glasner.Another top half finish looks unlikely, but progress has continued under the Austrian thanks to their FA Cup heroics, including a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Champions League quarter-finalists Aston Villa in the last four.Eberechi Eze is the main man for City to fear with five goals in his last four games. But he is one of just four England internationals that reached the final of Euro 2024 likely to start for Palace on Saturday alongside Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton.“It means everything,” said Eze on the prospect of delivering the club’s first taste of silverware.“We know what it means to the fans, to the club. We’re going to give everything that we’ve got to put ourselves in the best position.“We’re confident. We know that we’ve just got to do what we do and be the best version of ourselves and we’ve got the chance of beating any team.”Victory would also secure entry to one of Europe’s major club competitions for the first time in Palace’s history with a place in the Europa League at stake.City’s laboured display in drawing a blank at bottom-of-the-table Southampton last weekend gave Palace even more reason to believe. However, Guardiola’s men are unbeaten in 10 games, including a 5-2 demolition of Palace in the Premier League last month despite falling 2-0 behind.City’s fightback at the Etihad Stadium that day was sparked by Kevin De Bruyne rolling back the years. The Belgian has just three games left as a City player after a glorious decade in Manchester and will be aiming to add one more to his 14 major honours with the club.“He has had an incredible time at Manchester City,” said City’s top scorer Erling Haaland.“It is ridiculous how many trophies he has won. Hopefully he will get one more trophy.”After an unprecedented four consecutive English top-flight titles, City find themselves battling just to secure a top-five Premier League finish and a place in next season’s Champions League.Anything other than victory would cap what Haaland described as a “horrendous” campaign for a squad of serial winners.City have not ended a season without a trophy since Guardiola’s first at the club in 2016/17.“It is a good habit to reach Wembley and always important to win trophies. We have the FA Cup final to play for and in a horrific season we still managed to do this,” added the Norwegian.Haaland is expected to start after making his comeback from six weeks out injured at Southampton last weekend. The post Crystal Palace go for glory as Man City seek salvation in FA Cup final appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "A court in Rio de Janeiro ordered the dismissal Thursday of Brazilian football federation head Ednaldo Rodrigues over suspicions that a signature in his employment contract was forged. The decision marks a new blow to Brazilian football, which celebrated some rare good news just four days ago with the announcement that Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will take the reins of the national team later this month. The Rio court said one of the signatories of Rodrigues’s 2025 contract had been mentally unfit to sign, meaning there had been “possible forgery.”As a result, the judge ruled in a judgment consulted by AFP, the employment agreement between Rodrigues and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), was “null” and void. The judge also ordered that the federation hold new leadership elections. The CBF’s interim president Fernando Jose Sarney said in a statement that the federation would abide by the ruling and call elections “as soon as possible.”But Brazilian media reported that the body had also appealed the judge’s ruling to the Supreme Court.Neither the court nor the CBF were immediately available to confirm the reports.Rodrigues, the first black president of the CBF, told journalists at a Fifa meeting in Asuncion Thursday, ahead of the ruling, that he had “absolute certainty” the document was valid. The 71-year-old had already been temporarily suspended in 2023 after a court found irregularities with his 2022 election, but was reinstated on orders of a Supreme Court judge after Fifa threatened sanctions against Brazilian football.Fifa and the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) had refused to accept Rodrigues’s 2023 ouster, warning the CBF it could be barred from international competitions if it allowed external interference in its affairs.Rodrigues had been leading negotiations to sign Real Madrid boss Ancelotti as coach, a bid that fell apart at the time.Ancelotti, whom Rodrigues has hailed as the “greatest coach in history,” was finally appointed to the job of Selecao coach on Monday. In March, Rodrigues was unanimously reelected to his post until 2030, as the sole remaining candidate after former star forward Ronaldo pulled out of the running.Weeks later, however, Rodrigues found himself again in hot water following an investigation by Brazilian magazine Piaui into the workings of the CBF.The article claimed Rodrigues bought the support of leaders of regional football federations towards his election by giving them a big salary boost. The CBF had been hoping that landing Ancelotti, the most successful coach in European Cup history, would help turn the page on a bruising period for Brazil, still reeling from its historic 4-1 thrashing by Argentina in March. The team’s last coach, Dorival Junior, was sacked over that performance. The record five-time World Cup winners are languishing in fourth place in the South American qualifying table for next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The post Fresh woes for Brazil football as federation boss dismissed appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "description": "South African teenager Khosi Dlomo wants to encourage others to take up her little-known equestrian sport of tent pegging.",
      • "content": "Riding on a galloping horse with a lance in her right hand, Khosi Dlomo's face is a picture of concentration as she sizes up her target. The South African teenager has little margin for error in her chosen sport of tent pegging. The equestrian discipline has military origins, with competitors riding down a track before attempting to remove a small wooden peg from the ground with either a lance or sword. \"When you get a peg, it gives me an adrenaline rush,\" Dlomo told BBC Sport Africa. \"The competitive nature gives me an energy boost.\" Carrying the peg away cleanly gives you six points, while striking it out of the ground secures four points and merely leaving a mark on the target gets two points. With a maximum of 192 points on offer over the course of 32 attempts - and the pegs decreasing in height from 60mm to 40mm between rounds - riders are also evaluated on their skills in the saddle. \"Tent pegging is a mind game,\" Dlomo said. \"When you get on the horse, you need to know what your job is in order to make sure you work together. \"You have to multitask, have very good horsemanship and know how to take care of yourself.\" As the only black female registered in tent pegging in sub-Saharan Africa, Dlomo's skills have taken her all the way to the sport's World Championships. She has also become an unlikely advocate for a sport she stumbled upon by chance as a six-year-old. \"It's an amazing honour and opportunity that I've been gifted with. But I also feel a bit of pressure and a responsibility.\" Tent pegging originated in medieval India, but was spread to South Africa by British cavalrymen during the Second Boer War between 1899 and 1902. Growing up in the suburbs of Durban, Dlomo's introduction to it came following a birthday party for a school friend. \"It was a horse riding party and then after I asked my mom 'Can I start horse riding?'.\" The coach she found, Dalene Baksa, was herself heavily involved in tent pegging. Yet Dlomo's mother did have some initial reservations over safety concerns about both riding and using either a lance or a sword to train. \"It takes a few months to get used to, but personally I wasn't really that scared of the weapons,\" Dlomo, now 19, said. \"I was quite a reckless kid. \"I'm just thankful that my parents were supportive and were willing to find something I was so passionate about. It didn't take a lot to win my mom over.\" Tent pegging remains a niche sport in South Africa - and one dominated by the white middle class. For Dlomo, the challenge is to appeal to a younger and more diverse audience. \"It's not publicised enough. Hardly anyone knows about it,\" she said. \"When I first came they weren't used to seeing a black rider. \"As the years went on I felt very welcomed and accepted. But I haven't seen any other black horse riders do tent pegging at competitions.\" Costs provide a major barrier to increasing participation. A spokesperson for the South African Equestrian Tentpegging Association estimated that the annual outlay required to keep a horse can be as much as 200,000 rand ($10,900, £8,250). Dlomo keeps three horses; Shadida, Baloo and Yogi, with Yogi her regular mount for domestic competitions. \"Horses are expensive to maintain [with] their food, their vehicles and the tack that goes on them,\" Dlomo said. \"Then on top of that you have to travel with them wherever the competition is, and entry fees for competing are expensive. \"My mom complains all the time - why didn't I pick tennis or something cheap?\" Dlomo, who is now based in Stellenbosch and studying viniculture at university, wants to use her platform to help grow the sport. \"Unfortunately I do feel tent pegging is in danger of extinction,\" she said. \"The number of riders at the SA Championships have been getting smaller and smaller, which is disheartening. \"I don't want to see it die out.\" Dlomo's career highlight so far has been competing at the 2024 World Championships in Jordan. While she is able to compete on her own horse, Yogi, in local competition, international rules state you must ride a different horse. \"That's what makes it a bit harder,\" Dlomo said. \"You don't have a connection with this horse, you don't know this horse. It's very clear to see when you don't have a connection. \"You're hanging off the side of a horse and need to trust this horse is stable. If you don't trust the animal it is not going to work out. I literally fell off.\" However, she managed to help the South African team to a fifth-placed finish in Jordan. As with some other equestrian events, tent pegging allows men and women to compete directly alongside one another, which Dlomo sees as empowering for females. The fact that mentality is more important than physical strength makes the sport more egalitarian. \"When teams are selected, they first do a women's team and a male team,\" she said. \"Then it comes to a merit team. You're saying 'Let's take our five best riders regardless of gender and age'. \"What I love about the sport is that you're not looking at my gender, you're looking at my capabilities as a rider and my horsemanship.\"",

      • "content": "Gabon's former President, Ali Bongo, who was deposed in a 2023 coup, has left the country and is now in Angola, the authorities there have announced. The Angolan presidency added in a statement posted on social media that Bongo's family had been released from detention and were with him in Luanda. Bongo's wife and son, Sylvia and Noureddin, faced corruption charges and had been imprisoned in 2023. They have not yet publicly commented on the charges, however Ms Bongo's lawyer has described her detention as arbitrary and illegal . The family's release comes after Angolan President João Lourenço, who currently heads the African Union, visited Libreville and held talks with his Gabonese counterpart Brice Oligui Nguema - the former general who led the coup against Bongo before being elected president last month. It remains unclear if the legal proceedings against Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo will continue. Ali Bongo, whose father Omar Bongo ruled Gabon for more than four decades, led the country for 14 years until the 2023 coup. After his toppling he was placed under house arrest where he reportedly remained, although Gabonese authorities say he was free to move about as he wished. His wife and son were detained in prison and then reportedly released to house arrest last week. Bongo has been vocal in condemning what he described as the \"violence and torture\" faced by his wife and son, although the authorities had denied subjecting the pair to cruel treatment. During their 14 years in power, the Bongo family had been accused of accumulating wealth for themselves at the expense of the country - allegations they deny. Despite Gabon being an oil-rich nation, a third of its population lives below the poverty line, according to the UN. Go to BBCAfrica.com for more news from the African continent. • "content": "( MENAFN - African Press Organization)CAPE TOWN, South Africa, May 16, 2025/APO Group/ -- The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Ms Jane Mananiso, welcomed the long-term sentence, of eight life terms, for convicted rapist Mr Moses Gqesha. Mr Gqesha's charges included kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft, and multiple counts of rape to a gender-based violence activist, Ms Andisiwe Andy Kawa on 9 December 2010, at King's Beach in Summerstrand, Gqeberha. Mr Gqesha was arrested in 2020 for an unrelated incident and forensic evidence taken from Ms Kawa in 2010 linked him to the rape. “Firstly, we want to applaud the South African Police Services for safeguarding the forensic evidence taken from Ms Kawa in 2010, that linked the rapist later to these heinous crimes. It was because of this act that this criminal will not face years behind bars and pay for his crimes,” said Ms Mananiso. “Furthermore, we want to commend the National Prosecuting Authority for a successful prosecution especially because the accused denied the charges even after he was linked with forensic evidence. This is truly commendable. “In a country that experienced high rates of gender-based violence and femicide, this is a victory for those thousands of women either still struggling for justice and those who fear speaking up against perpetrators. This is a sign that the wheels of justice do indeed turn,” emphasized Ms Mananiso. • "content": "Napoli will have their first opportunity to win their fourth Serie A title on Sunday night when the league leaders travel to Parma with a slender lead over Inter Milan heading into the penultimate weekend of the season.Antonio Conte’s team are just one point ahead of reigning champions Inter after being held by Genoa last weekend, but a win over Parma could seal a second Scudetto in three seasons.Conte said after last weekend’s draw that Napoli had “lost their bonus” by shaving off just one of the seven points — now six — they needed to get to guarantee the title.“We have to go and win the other two matches, that’s all there is to it,” said Conte.Napoli take on Parma while Inter host Champions League chasing Lazio at the San Siro, where fans will be buoyant after watching their team reach the Champions League final and cut the gap at the top of Serie A.Anything but a win over Lazio could well hand Napoli the title as both teams play at the same time in a bumper Sunday night of football.Nine matches will kick off at 8.45pm local time (1845GMT) with only one — Atalanta’s match at mid-table Genoa — being of no consequence and all the others potentially decisive for the title, European qualification or relegation. And the season finale has been thrown into chaos with the closing set of fixtures potentially being moved from next weekend to this coming Wednesday and Thursday as a Scudetto play-off becomes an increasing possibility.Should Napoli and Inter finish on the same points the destination of the title will be decided by a single contest between the pair, in theory at the San Siro as Inter would lead Napoli on goal difference. However an eventual play-off could be moved to Rome’s Stadio Olimpico should Italy’s public safety authorities deem it necessary. If a play-off can still happen after this weekend’s matches the final fixtures will be rescheduled for midweek so that any Scudetto showdown is held at the weekend, giving Inter a full week of preparation for the Champions League final. While Inter definitely have the tougher fixture, Napoli will have a test on their hands at Parma who have given plenty of big teams a fright this season and will be keen to secure safety in front of their home support.Bologna will continue their bid for Champions League football at Fiorentina after making history on Wednesday night by winning the Italian Cup.Vincenzo Italiano’s team beat sorry AC Milan — at Roma — 1-0 to win the storied club’s first major trophy since 1974, and a spot in Europe’s top club competition is still a possibility.Bologna are two points behind fourth-placed Juventus, who host Udinese and are favourites to take the last Champions League spot.An Inter icon as a player and a coach in their youth set-up until last summer, Chivu could give his old club a huge hand in defending their league title.Chivu, who as a player won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League over six seasons at Inter, is in his first senior coaching job at Parma and has almost secured his team’s Serie status for next season.Promoted Parma were in the relegation zone and on a seven-match losing streak when Chivu replaced Fabio Pecchia in mid-February but are now four points above the drop zone.Defeats to high-flying Como and fellow strugglers Empoli mean relegation is still a possibility with a trip to Atalanta coming up after the visit of Napoli.1 – A single point separates Napoli from Inter.17 – The number of games more Inter have played this season compared to Napoli.SaturdayGenoa v Atalanta (1845)SundayCagliari v Venezia, Fiorentina v Bologna, Verona v Como, Inter Milan v Lazio, Juventus v Udinese, Lecce v Torino, Monza v Empoli, Parma v Napoli, Roma v AC Milan (all 1845)The post Napoli’s first match point as Scudetto race reaches climax appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Borussia Dortmund can take the “final step” in their miraculous run to the Bundesliga top four with a big win at home against Holstein Kiel on Saturday. After a 2-0 loss at RB Leipzig in March, Dortmund were 11th and did not look like finishing in the top half of the table, let alone the top four. But since then, Dortmund have won six and drawn one of their seven games, putting the chance of qualifying for the Champions League through a top-four finish firmly in their own hands ahead of Saturday’s final Bundesliga matchday. With third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt playing at fourth-placed Freiburg, fifth-placed Dortmund have a simple assignment against Kiel, who have already been relegated.Dortmund need to win by three goals to guarantee a spot in the top four regardless of other results, although a two-goal victory is likely to be enough. If Frankfurt beat Freiburg or draw, Dortmund will also be through to the top four, provided they beat Kiel.Champions League qualification is crucial for Dortmund, who rely heavily on European income to compete.Missing the competition, a year after reaching the final, would dent Dortmund’s short-term ambitions and maybe lead to player sales. The excellent form will all but ensure Niko Kovac, Dortmund’s third coach this season, remains in the dugout next year.“Before, we were reliant on other results: now we’ve got our own say. We want to win and we have to win. When we do it, then we’ve done a good job, but it’ll be damn tough.“It’s a nice feeling to be up there again,” Kovac said of Dortmund’s chances, but added “we worked long enough towards it, but now it’s about taking the last step, but that last step can sometimes be the hardest”.The coach said his side wanted to reach the top four on their own and would not be focused on what was happening in the parallel match.“First things first, we need to win. We don’t need to turn our eyes towards Freiburg — they need to turn their eyes to us.”Kiel may have been relegated in their debut Bundesliga season, but already beat Dortmund 4-2 back in January and will not want to sign off from the top flight with a whimper.Kiel’s American left-back John Tolkin told AFP on Thursday his side will turn Dortmund’s hunger for goals to their advantage.“We have a lot to play for as well, for pride, for our fans, and to prove to ourselves we belong in this league.“We’re gonna look to get after them, spoil the party a little bit. If we can be the spoilers and have a win the last game of the season, that’d be awesome.”Red-hot striker Serhou Guirassy has been the centrepiece of Borussia Dortmund’s stunning late-season run to within touching distance of the top four.Guirassy has eight goals in his last five games in all competitions and has only failed to find the net once in his past six league matches.Whether in big wins or tight affairs, with either foot or his head, Guirassy’s reliability in finding the net for Dortmund earned the 29-year-old the nickname ‘life insurance’ from coach Kovac. The Guinean, who arrived in Dortmund after scoring 28 goals in 28 league games for Stuttgart last season, has silenced those who called him a one-season wonder. He has 33 goals in all competitions this season, putting him behind only Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Raphina among players in Europe’s top five leagues.25 – Harry Kane has 25 league goals this season, five ahead of next-best Serhou Guirassy, and is odds on to top the goalscoring charts for the second season in a row.7 – Hamburg will return to the top flight next season after seven campaigns in the second flight.0 – Freiburg have never played Champions League football, but can qualify with a win at home against Frankfurt on Saturday.Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich, Heidenheim v Werder Bremen, Borussia Moenchengladbach v Wolfsburg, Augsburg v Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund v Holstein Kiel, RB Leipzig v Stuttgart, Freiburg v Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz v Bayer Leverkusen, St Pauli v BochumThe post Dortmund hope to take ‘final step’ in unlikely top four rescue act appeared first on The Namibian.",

      • "content": "Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas birdied five of his last six holes, ending with a spectacular 27-foot birdie putt to seize a two-stroke lead after Thursday’s opening round of the PGA Championship. The 40-year-old South American, who snapped a seven-year win drought by capturing last year’s PGA 3M Open, fired a seven-under-par 64 to grab the lead at Quail Hollow.“It feels amazing,” Vegas said. “It’s what we dream of, what we train for, what we work for every day.”World number 70 Vegas, whose lowest prior major round was a 67, has never finished in the top 20 at a major.“I’ve been really working on prioritizing playing well at majors,” he said. “Getting older, getting wiser, not putting so much pressure on myself, that’s the approach I’ve been taking and it worked out today.“The game is there. We’ve just got to repeat what we did today.”Australian Cam Davis and American Ryan Gerard shared second on 66 while a pack on 67 included German Stephan Jaeger, England’s Luke Donald and Aaron Rai, New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and American Alex Smalley. While Vegas had a dream start, it was a grind for the feature group of top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Xander Schauffele and Masters champion Rory McIlroy.Scheffler fired 69, Schauffele shot 72 and McIlroy stumbled in on 74 at a course where he has won four times.“I didn’t feel like I hit it my best,” Scheffler said. “Did a good job keeping a level head out there and grinding out a good score.”Vegas, whose round began with a bogey at the 10th hole, chipped in from 34 feet to birdie the 18th, then closed with his astonishing front-nine birdie run, capped by an 18-foot birdie putt at eight and his stunner at the ninth.“Greens were getting a little bit bumpy at the end of the round so it was kind of tough,” but said after his birdie at eight, “I knew something special was happening.“Nine was a bonus for everything happening in the day, one of those you don’t expect to make but we’ll take anything we can get.”World number 68 Davis, a 30-year-old from Sydney, and 81st-ranked Gerard, a 25-year-old from nearby Raleigh making only his third major start, grinded out solid rounds.“Very happy with my work,” Davis said. “It’s still a four-round event but you can definitely help yourself a lot by having a good first round.”In his PGA Championship debut, Gerard reeled off four birdies to start the back nine and chipped in for eagle from nearly 60 feet on the par-five 15th but closed with back-to-back bogeys.“It’s kind of a dream,” Gerard said. “But to make that a reality... it’s a little bit extra special.”Davis made seven birdies against two bogeys, highlighted by a 29-foot putt at the par-five 10th and a 21-footer at the par-three sixth.“The swing is feeling a little better but I rolled in a lot of good putts,” Davis said. “I was reading them well and made a lot of good distance putts to keep the momentum going.”Europe Ryder Cup captain Donald, chasing his first major title at age 47, can become the first Englishman since Jim Barnes in 1919 to win the PGA Championship, as could five other English players in the top 20.Donald sank a clutch nine-foot par putt on the 18th hole to finish the day’s only bogey-free round.“Very pleased with the score. It was a pleasant surprise,” Donald said. “I didn’t hit a ton of greens but my putter was really good.”Only four Europeans have ever won the title, most recently by Northern Ireland’s McIlroy in 2014.Scheffler, second-ranked McIlroy and third-ranked Schauffele all made double bogeys at the par-four 16th. Scheffler and Schauffele found water from the fairway and complained of mud clinging to fairway balls.“It’s frustrating to hit the ball in the middle of the fairway and get mud on it and have no idea where it’s going to go,” Scheffler said.American Jordan Spieth, seeking a victory to complete a career Grand Slam, fired a 76 to stand 10 adrift. The post Venezuelan Vegas birdies five of last six to grab PGA lead appeared first on The Namibian.",
