      • "content": "AfricaNenda Foundation ( ) has released its 2024 Annual Report, marking a significant year of transformation and impact in its mission to accelerate access to inclusive instant payment systems (IIPS) across Africa. The report highlights key milestones, insights, and the organization's transition into an independent foundation, further strengthening its ability to drive financial inclusion across the continent. “In 2024, we took a bold step forward as we became an independent organization, allowing us to operate with greater agility and deepen our impact,” said Robert Ochola, CEO of AfricaNenda Foundation. “Financial inclusion is not just about facilitating transactions; it is about providing the infrastructure, rules, and governance that enable individuals and businesses-especially women and underserved communities-to participate fully in the digital economy.” Inclusive Instant Payment Systems a Pathway to Africa's Financial Inclusion Despite Africa's rapid growth in digital financial services, nearly 400 million people remain excluded from formal financial systems. Payments play a foundational role in financial inclusion, with over a third of banked adults opening their first accounts to receive government or wage payments (Global Findex 2022). Yet, half of African adults still lack access to IIPS, making it difficult for many to send and receive money affordably and reliably. AfricaNenda's 2024 State of Inclusive Instant Payment Systems (SIIPS) in Africa Report reveals that IIPS-societal-scale digital payment systems enabling low-cost, real-time transactions-are crucial to unlocking access for the financially underserved. Without such infrastructure, millions of women, young adults, and rural communities are forced to rely on cash, limiting their participation in the digital economy. Driving Financial Inclusion Across the Continent AfricaNenda's work in 2024 spanned multiple countries and regions, supporting the development of interoperable payment systems and strengthening digital public infrastructure. Key achievements included: Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond With a team of 21 professionals across 11 African countries, AfricaNenda remains committed to its vision of enabling financial access for 260 million financially excluded Africans by 2030. As an independent foundation, it will focus on: The AfricaNenda 2024 Annual Report is now available for download: AfricaNenda Annual Report 2024 – AfricaNenda ( ) MENAFN29042025002747001784ID1109484120 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. • "description": "Historians say there were three popes of North African descent, the last one more than 1,500 years ago.",
      • "content": "Now predominantly Muslim, North Africa was once a Christian heartland, producing Catholic popes who left their mark on the Church to this day. Their papacies were in the era of the Roman Empire, which stretched across modern-day Tunisia, the north-east of Algeria and the coast of western Libya. \"North Africa was the Bible Belt of ancient Christianity,\" says Prof Christopher Bellitto, a historian at Kean University in the US. Many Catholics in Africa are hoping that that the papacy will return to the continent for the first time in more than 1,500 years, as a successor to Pope Francis is chosen. Here, we look at the three previous African popes - and how they got Christians to celebrate Easter Sunday and St Valentine's Day. All three have been recognised in the Church as saints. Thought to be of Berber origin, Pope Victor I was in charge of the Catholic Church at a time when Christians were sometimes being persecuted by Roman officials for refusing to worship Roman gods. He is perhaps best known for ensuring Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday. In the 2nd Century, some Christian groups from the Roman province of Asia (in modern-day Turkey) celebrated Easter on the same day that Jews celebrated Passover, which could fall on different days of the week. However, Christians in the Western part of the Empire believed that Jesus was resurrected on a Sunday, so Easter should always be celebrated on that day. The debate over when the resurrection took place made it an extremely contentious issue. The \"Easter controversy\" was symbolic of larger conflicts between East and West, and whether or not Christians should follow Jewish practices. Victor I called the very first Roman Synod - a gathering of Church leaders - to resolve the impasse. He did this by threatening to excommunicate from the Church those bishops who refused to comply with his wishes. \"He was a rather forceful voice for getting everyone on literally the same page,\" Prof Bellitto told the BBC. This was an impressive feat, the historian said, because \"he was the Bishop of Rome when Christianity was illegal in the Roman empire.\" Another important part of Victor I's legacy was to introduce Latin as the common language of the Catholic Church. Previously Ancient Greek was the primary language of the Catholic Liturgy as well as official communication for the Church. Victor I himself wrote in - and spoke - Latin, which was widely spoken in North Africa. Pope Miltiades is believed to have been born in Africa. During his reign, Christianity gained increasing acceptance from successive Roman emperors, eventually becoming the Empire's official religion. Before this, the persecution of Christians had been widespread at different points in the Empire's history. However, Prof Bellitto pointed out that Militiades was not responsible for this change, saying the Pope was the \"recipient of the Roman benevolence\" rather than being a great negotiator. Miltiades was given a palace by the Roman Emperor Constantine, becoming the first pope to have an official residence. He was also granted permission by Constantine to build the Lateran Basilica, now the oldest public church in Rome. While modern popes live and work in the Vatican, the Lateran church is sometimes referred to in Catholicism as \"the mother of all churches\". Gelasius I is the only one of the three African popes who historians believe was not born in Africa. \"There's a reference to him being... Roman-born. So we don't know if he [ever] lived in North Africa, but it seems clear that he was of North African descent,\" Prof Bellitto explained. He was the most important of the three African church leaders, according to Prof Bellitto. Gelasius I is widely recognised as the first pope to officially be called the \"Vicar of Christ\", a term that signifies the Pope's role as Christ's representative on Earth. He also developed the Doctrine of the Two Swords, which emphasised the separate-but-equal powers of the Church and the state. Gelasius I made the critical distinction that both powers were given to the Church by God, who then delegated earthly power to the state, making the Church ultimately superior. \"Later on, in the Middle Ages, popes sometimes tried to veto the selection of an emperor or a king, because they said God gave them that power,\" said Prof Bellitto. Gelasius I is remembered, too, for his response to the Acacian Schism - a split between the Eastern and Western Christian Churches from 484 to 519. During this period, Gelasius I asserted the supremacy of Rome and the papacy over the entire Church, East and West, which experts believe went further than any of his predecessors. Gelasius is also responsible for a popular celebration which is still marked every year - establishing St Valentine's Day on 14 February in 496 to commemorate the Christian martyr St Valentine. Some accounts say Valentine was a priest who continued to perform weddings in secret when they were banned by Emperor Claudius II. Historians believe that Valentine's Day is rooted in the Roman love and fertility festival, Lupercalia, and was a move by Gelasius I to Christianise pagan traditions. Prof Bellitto says there is no way of knowing with any degree of accuracy what the three popes looked like. \"We have to remember that the Roman Empire, and indeed the Middle Ages, didn't think of race as we think of it nowadays. It had nothing to do with skin colour,\" he told the BBC. \"People in the Roman Empire didn't deal with race, they dealt with ethnicity.\" Prof Philomena Mwaura, an academic at Kenya's Kenyatta University, told the BBC that Roman Africa was very multicultural, with local Berber and Punic groups, freed slaves and people who had come from Rome found there. \"The North African community was quite mixed, and it was a trade route also for many people who were involved in trade in the earlier antiquity,\" she explained. Rather than identifying with specific ethnic groups, \"most people who belonged to areas within the Roman Empire regarded themselves as Roman\", Prof Mwaura added. None of of the 217 popes since Gelasius I are believed to have come from Africa. \"The church in North Africa was weakened by very many forces, including the fall of the Roman Empire and also the incursion of Muslims [into North Africa] in the 7th Century,\" Prof Mwaura said. However, some experts argue that the prevalence of Islam in North Africa does not explain the absence of a pope from the entire continent over more than 1,500 years. Prof Bellitto said the process of electing a new pontiff became an \"Italian monopoly\" for many years. However, he said there was a strong chance of a pope from Asia or Africa in the near future because Catholics in the southern hemisphere outnumber those in the north. In fact, Catholicism is expanding more rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa today than anywhere else. The latest figures show there were 281 million Catholics in Africa in 2023. This accounts for 20% of the worldwide congregation. Three Africans are in the race to succeed Pope Francis - the Democratic Republic of Congo's Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Ghana's Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson and Guinea's Robert Sarah. But Prof Mwaura argued that \"although Christianity is very strong in Africa, the power of the Church is still in the north, where the resources have been\". \"Maybe, as it continues to be very strong within the continent and supporting itself, then a time will come when there could be an African pope,\" she said.",

Deveria seguir para São Paulo e agora não sabe como poderá resolver.“Estou preocupada, tenho o meu bebé aqui e não sei como hei-de fazer”, afirmou, segurando uma criança com um ano ao colo.LusaThe post Aeroporto de Lisboa bloqueado entre quem chega e quem quer partir first appeared on Jornal O Guardião.",

The post Portugal enfrenta o maior apagão da sua história recente first appeared on Jornal O Guardião.",

      • "content": "The Minecraft movie is extending its theatrical run with a sing-along release called A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition. There are likely several factors going into the decision to dig deeper into the Minecraft film’s potential in theaters. Following its premiere earlier this month, A Minecraft Movie has managed to plow through every weekend by reaching a new milestone. Its first weekend alone brought in a total of more than $301 million worldwide as it quickly glided its way to $500 million and $700 million . It’s been a quick but long road to that legendary $1 billion status, and at a current global total of $816,566,661 (according to Box Office Mojo ), Warner Bros. and Legendary want an extra kick. The extra push from A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition will also double down on the memes that helped propel it to its successful status in the first place. Upon its release, Minecraft players flocked to the theater to cause havoc as they belted out references to the Chicken Jockey, Steve, Crafting Tables, and so much more . Chaos got so out of control that one fan managed to sneak a real-life chicken into a showing . As excitement has calmed down, it’s Black’s singing that has emerged as one of the long-lasting A Minecraft Movie memes. The star has a few catchy tunes in the film, but Steve’s Lava Chicken is the track that fans have clung to the most. The cut is so popular that it even managed to debut on the UK’s official chart, securing its spot as the shortest song to ever do so . Warner Bros. and Legendary are looking to keep up that energy when A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition mines into theaters next weekend. While we wait to see if theaters will be filled with screaming fans once again, you can read up on producer Torfi Frans Olafsson’s thoughts on whether or not Herobrine really made an appearance in the movie . • "content": "If you thought Ryan Coogler’s Sinners wasn’t going to be a cultural phenomenon, it’s safe to say you’ve been proven wrong. The stylish and scary vampire flick has taken the film-loving world by storm since it debuted in theaters just two weeks ago, and is now officially one of the highest-grossing vampire movies of all time in North America. According to this ranking, Sinners will soon shoot past the first Hotel Transylvania movie's $148 million domestic lifetime gross, and could catch the first Twilight movie's $193 million North American haul. It's a different situation entirely when it comes to global box office, of course. Currently Sinners sits at a worldwide total of $161.626 million after two weekends in theaters. 2012's Hotel Transylvania ended up with $358,488,860 at the global box office. 2008's Twilight secured $408,516,348 globally. Here’s where the argument for the extension of the theatrical window comes back into play, but if Sinners sticks around in theaters for a bit — as it should, considering venues around the country are packed to the brim, some even during the middle of the day on weekdays (speaking from personal NYC experience here) — it absolutely has the potential to pull past $300 million globally before bowing out triumphantly and heading to streaming and, hopefully, physical media. After all, the film is already over halfway there at $161 million, so it’s far from impossible. I think we’re all rooting for the film to go as far as its success will take it, and if that means dethroning Bella and Edward, so be it. The vampire gods — and, quite frankly, the people — will it so. IGN's Sinners review returned a 9/10. We said: \"Ryan Coogler’s first horror movie expertly blends plenty of vampires and music into a compelling story about twin brothers – played by Michael B. Jordan – returning home to their Mississippi hometown in 1932.\" Lex Briscuso is a film and television critic and a freelance entertainment writer for IGN. • "content": "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has been in players’ hands for almost a week, and they’ve already got a long list of changes they’d love to see included. Bethesda heard players’ cries for Oblivion Remastered updates and took to its official Discord to see what the community wants to see included. It’s unclear how many suggestions – if any at all – will worm their way into the Elder Scrolls remaster, but it’s clear that Bethesda is at least taking the feedback into consideration. Still, there are a few suggestions that have climbed their way to the top of the list of requests. Oblivion Remastered’s most noticeable new feature allows players to sprint, making the trek across the Planes of Oblivion speedier than ever... and also a bit awkward. It’s hard to deny that sprint, as it currently exists in Oblivion Remastered, is quite wonky, as the player character hunches forward and swings their arms as they make a mad dash toward whatever adventures lie ahead. The Elder Scrolls series is known for its jank , but this is one animation that many believe could use some slight adjustments. While some hope the spring animation is altered to look more natural altogether, others are at least hoping for a setting that allows players to go with a natural sprint or stick with the current sprint if they so choose. Social media is flooded with ridiculous Oblivion Remastered custom character designs , but many think its character creation system could be better. One popular request involves additional hair options as players look to personalize their chosen character. Another has to do with the request for more body customization tools, including height and weight. While these additions could give fans more freedom to express themselves, many are just hoping for the ability to change their appearance later in the game. Difficulty is an especially hot topic for Oblivion Remastered players now one week removed from launch. Specifically, hundreds of fans are looking for a tweak to the challenge offered in the Adept and Expert modes, with the former deemed to be too easy by many, while the latter has been labeled too hard. A difficulty slider or additional difficulty options may be what Oblivion Remastered needs not only to give players the choice to finely tune their challenge level but maybe even recreate the difficulty of the original experience. “We need difficulty sliders, please!” one Discord user said. “Adept is way too easy and mindless, but expert is too grindy. Honestly can’t play before a patch arrives.” Bethesda has spent the last decade making its pro-mod stance abundantly clear, so many were shocked to see that Oblivion Remastered did not support mods upon its release. There’s been no word as to why such a key feature was left out this time around, leaving many to hope Bethesda and Virtuos will eventually change course. While unofficial mod support can already be found for PC players who know where to look, console Elder Scrolls fans have been left without the freedom to customize every aspect of the game. Official mod support means not only a streamlined modding experience on PC but potentially even console, too. As players continuously pour hundreds of hours into Oblivion Remastered, they’ve found their menu experience to be overencumbered by an insurmountable list of spells. Regardless of their utility, you’ll be hard pressed to find a player who uses every last magic ability that can be found in Cyrodiil. These are long lists of spells that players are sifting through to find their desired incantation, making the option to sort and hide them easily one of the more popular suggestions. “There should be a way to remove spells from your spell book,” another Discord user added. “Once you start making custom spells and level up, your spell list becomes unmanageable. Exploration is one of the key features of an Elder Scrolls game, so players are hoping Bethesda will eventually release an update that makes reading its map a bit easier. Players are looking for a UI update that clarifies whether or not a location has been cleared so that no one wastes their time going to a dungeon that they forgot they cleaned out 30 hours ago. Another prominent issue featured in suggestion threads involves Soul Gems. Like maps, it’s a bit hard to make out a Soul Gem’s type without going through a few steps. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim allowed players to make out a Soul Gem’s contents by simply reading its name, so the hope is that a similar addition is added to Oblivion Remastered. This one’s a no-brainer. While most players have found their Oblivion Remastered experience to be relatively smooth, every platform has its fair share of complaints when it comes to framerate issues, bugs, and visual hiccups. These problems were exacerbated when a recent backend update triggered a wave of graphics glitches that removed access to some settings while tanking framerates on PC. Bethesda said it’s working on a fix, so don’t be surprised if future updates also bring tweaks to smooth out the experience. Elder Scrolls fans are drooling at the thought of updates to Oblivion Remastered, but at least on PC, they don’t have to rely on Bethesda to see some of their most desired changes implemented. There are, of course, already hundreds of mods available for those looking to tweak this beloved refresh to their liking. Some highly requested items have already gotten fan-made mods, too, including an upright sprint animation and more customization options . We’ve got plenty more on Oblivion Remastered, including a report on a player who managed to escape the confines of Cyrodiil to explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell, the rumored setting of The Elder Scrolls VI . We've also got a comprehensive guide to everything you'll find in Oblivion Remastered, including an expansive Interactive Map , complete Walkthroughs for the Main Questline and every Guild Quest , How to Build the Perfect Character , Things to Do First , every PC Cheat Code , and much more. • "content": "The Last of Us: Season 2 Episode 3 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on April 27, 2025. Verdict Episode 3 of season 2 of The Last of Us gives us and its characters a moment to grieve before embarking on another collision with fate. Touching moments are sprinkled throughout, with some heavy-handed ones also making their way into the mix – it’s a chapter that solidifies the characters’ motivations while reinforcing its themes of tribalism and selfishness versus selflessness. It was always going to be a quieter episode compared to last week’s earth-shattering events, but at least that quiet gives us precious time to sift through the aftermath. Score: 7 The Last of Us: Season 2 Episode 2 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on April 20, 2025. Verdict The second episode of The Last of Us season 2 consists of two stories that don’t quite give each other enough room to breathe. There’s no denying the skill of the production on display, but cramming a full battle sequence into an episode also containing the series' most pivotal moment was always going to be a challenge. The result is a competent, often thrilling hour of television, but one that ultimately underserves the larger story and the characters it forever changes. Score: 6 The Last of Us: Season 2 Premiere Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on April 13, 2025. Verdict The Last of Us season 2’s premiere is the calm before the storm. It successfully reintroduces us into its post-pandemic world, greeting us with familiar-yet-changed faces and new ones alike. At its most enjoyable when letting us inside its protagonists’ minds and outside the walls of the town they now call home, it shows just how much Joel and Ellie have changed in the five years since they arrived in Jackson. (There’s also a welcome dose of infected action.) Despite some choices of adaptation that result in memorable moments from the game not hitting as hard as they perhaps should, it builds a strong foundation for the rest of the season’s story to be built from. Score: 8 The Last of Us: Season 2 Review (Spoiler-Free) Reviewed by Simon Cardy on April 7, 2025. Verdict It was always going to be a challenge to adapt The Last of Us Part 2’s sprawling, twisting story into a television show across multiple seasons, and at the halfway point, the jury is still out on whether it will ultimately work. Season 2 of HBO’s Naughty Dog adaptation is not bad television, far from it. It’s incredibly well-made, often looks gorgeous, and is packed full of stellar performances. But the storytelling devices and choices made in terms of pace and placement for key events bump up against what works, ultimately not delivering the striking effect this story’s undeniable shocking events should. It’s good, just not a patch on its stellar source material (or its first season) so far. Score: 7 The Last of Us: Season 1 Finale Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on March 12, 2023. Verdict The season one finale of HBO’s The Last of Us is a thrillingly faithful adaptation of one video games’ greatest endings, even if it doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the original. Pedro Pascal excels in Joel’s defining moment, displaying both the tenderness and brutality we’ve come to expect from Ellie’s protector. Wonderfully shot and hauntingly soundtracked, it’s an ending that will long linger in the memory of those first experiencing it, and one that ultimately sticks the landing on the comparatively shorter runway that’s been built for it. Score: 8 The Last of Us: Episode 8 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on March 5, 2023. Verdict As Ellie reaches her most desperate moment, darkness comes knocking in an outstanding episode of HBO’s The Last of Us. A chapter that explores the depraved depths humanity will plummet to in order to survive, it’s endlessly engaging and hard to turn your eyes away from, even when you want to. Packed full of crucial character moments and flashes of ferocious action, it’s as horrific as this world can get, even when the infected remain firmly below it. Score: 9 The Last of Us: Episode 7 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on February 26, 2023. Verdict Episode 7 of HBO’s The Last of Us is a beautifully faithful adaptation of the beloved Left Behind chapter of Ellie’s story. A real showcase for Bella Ramsey’s ability as a performer, we’re treated to a story of young love that is equal parts heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. It’s also a necessary tale to be told; a flashback that gives us a deeper understanding of the person Ellie is today and what drives her motivations in the present. Score: 9 The Last of Us: Episode 6 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on February 19, 2023. Verdict Episode six of HBO’s The Last of Us allows for past demons to be exorcised in order to build a stronger future for its two leads. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are simply terrific as they navigate some of the story’s most memorable scenes, all of which sideline action in favour of heated, nuanced conversation. Beautifully shot and expertly written, it’s a standout episode – that slightly rushed ending aside -- delivers exactly what’s needed at this part of Joel and Ellie’s journey. Score: 9 The Last of Us: Episode 5 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on February 10, 2023. Verdict Episode 5 of The Last of Us is an excellent closing to a chapter packed full of memorable moments – some thrilling, some haunting. A standout flurry of action followed by a shocking snap of violence delivers Joel and Ellie yet another broken friendship, but not before moments of kindness and warmth are allowed to grow. It’s another fantastic episode of the HBO hit and one that builds impressively on what came before it, while ominously foreshadowing what may be to come. Score: 9 The Last of Us: Episode 4 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on February 5, 2023. Verdict Episode 4 is another great episode of The Last of Us, albeit one that spends more time setting up what is to come for its two lead characters – both in the long and short term – than it does provide many definitive moments of its own. Nonetheless, Melanie Lynskey’s introduction as Kathleen adds a chilling, sinister edge to the cast, while the fantastic action scene is positively thrilling. Much of the episode’s duration is spent developing Joel and Ellie’s relationship, and the pace is justifiably slowed down slightly in order to let it naturally blossom - a necessary decision taken to further the impact of future payoffs when the stakes will be heightened once more. Score: 8 The Last of Us: Episode 3 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on January 29, 2023. Verdict A masterfully told love story set in a world designed to leave them unwritten, episode 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us is a sensational hour of television. It shines a light on a chapter previously shrouded in resentment, instead offering two characters a brighter, happier time together. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett take on leading role duties with elegance, leaving an unmistakably beautiful mark on the show as we’re shown a side of humanity that makes what Joel and Ellie are fighting for worth saving. It’s an episode, just like love, that lives long in the memory after experiencing it. Score: 10 The Last of Us: Episode 2 Review Reviewed by Simon Cardy on January 22, 2023. Verdict Episode 2 of The Last of Us opens up the horrors of its world for all to see, but not before showing us the terrifying nature of its inception. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey continue to grow into the shoes of Joel and Ellie, while Anna Torv gives Tess a standout end to her short but sweet story. A fantastic blend of edge-of-your-seat tension, memorable character moments, and engaging backstory, it carries on the momentum of the premiere to great effect - all while making sure you won’t want to touch or eat a mushroom for weeks. A cast at the top of their game with technical artistry behind the camera to match, it throws us into a world on the edge of cataclysm before brilliantly catapulting us into one that has been plunged into the depths of it. Unrelenting for most of its lengthy runtime, it's crucially always entertaining, even as new information is thrown our way at top speed. Touching yet explosive, it encapsulates everything that makes the opening chapter of the video game’s story so special - whether it's the first or the hundred-and-first time that it's punched you squarely in the gut. Verdict HBO’s The Last of Us is a breathtaking adaptation of one of the most impactful stories told in video games and brilliantly brings Joel and Ellie’s journey to a whole new audience. Taking the essence of what made the original tale so enduring, it builds out the world of the game while also switching up some aspects to almost entirely stunning effect. Anchored by two outstanding lead performances from Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, it delivers an enriching show for fans of the PlayStation hit, while also managing to stay welcomingly thrilling to newcomers. • "content": "The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in games has been discussed more and more lately. NieR series director Yoko Taro has weighed in too, expressing concern that it could lead to game creators losing jobs to AI. During the interview, the group was asked what the future of adventure games might be, and both Yoko and Uchikoshi discussed AI. “There’s a lot of new games I want to create, but with AI technology evolving at such a high speed, I fear that there is a possibility that AI-generated adventure games will become mainstream,\" said Uchikoshi. He went on to note that current AI struggles to achieve \"outstanding writing\" comparable to human creativity, and that maintaining the \"human touch\" would be crucial to staying ahead of the tech. Yoko, though, also expressed concerns. “I, too, believe that game creators may lose their jobs because of AI,\" said Yoko. \"There’s a chance that in 50 years, game creators will be treated like bards.” When it came to whether they thought AI could imitate the worlds and stories, including the twists and turns, of their works, Yoko and Ishii agreed. Kodaka, however, said that even if AI could imitate their work and styles, it wouldn't be able to behave like a creator. He drew comparisons to David Lynch, and how creators could write a scenario in Lynch's style, but Lynch could then change up his own style while still making it feel authentic and Lynchian. While Yoko posed the idea of using AI to generate new scenarios, like a route in an adventure game, Kodaka noted how this personalized nature would lead to games being less of a shared experience. Notable creators have been weighing in with their thoughts on AI, large language models, and other generative systems for a while now. Some have even been experimenting with it, including Capcom and Activision . Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently said generative AI can be used in \"creative ways,\" but it would also raise issues with intellectual property rights. Microsoft and PlayStation have also weighed in on the topic. Eric is a freelance writer for IGN.",

      • "content": "A court case which found Nigeria's leading football bodies to be negligent for the death of a player has been hailed as a \"landmark\" by global players' union Fifpro. Martins Chineme died aged 25 in March 2020 after collapsing on the pitch while representing Nasarawa United in Nigeria's top flight, which was administrated by the League Management Company (LMC), now known as the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) board, a body that sits under the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Over five years later, the club, the LMC, the NFF and Christian Mbah, the match commissioner, were all adjudged to have failed in their duty of care to the player. While there have been previous negligence cases in Nigeria, this is the first regarding negligence in sport. \"It's a proper landmark case in football,\" Loic Alves, Fifpro's senior legal counsel, told BBC Sport Africa. \"I have not seen another ruling where a federation is held liable to the extent that they are in this case. This is rare.\" This month's historic verdict was made by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), which awarded damages to the family of the late player, who died of suspected cardiac arrest. The club, the NPFL, the NFF and Mbah have not commented on the ruling. Key to the findings of the NICN, which has exclusive jurisdiction over civil matters related to employment and workplace conditions, is that the ruling was made in common law, so establishing a legal precedent for such cases in future. \"We're hopeful that this ruling will serve not just in Nigeria, but will also cross borders and force federations, leagues and clubs to reflect on their regulations and obligations,\" said Alves. \"It works as a strong reminder that a lack of enforcement of your regulations can lead to real-life consequences - and these consequences can be terrible.\" Chineme's family have reacted with both relief and delight after a protracted legal trial. \"It was an emotion one can't really express,\" Chineme's brother Michael told the BBC. \"It has been a long journey in pursuit of justice. I want to dedicate the victory to those who feel all hope is gone.\" Martins Chineme died after a catalogue of failures at the Lafia Township Stadium where there was no functioning ambulance or working defibrillator, poor on-pitch treatment and an under-qualified club doctor. Contrary to league rules, the defender had not passed a mandatory pre-season medical assessment that includes an echocardiogram, which could have been vital for a player whose family have a history of heart issues. Nasarawa United, a state-owned club, had also failed to provide insurance cover for the player. The pre-season screening failure and inadequate medical facilities prompted the NICN to describe the defendants' conduct as \"reprehensible\". The Chineme family also successfully claimed that all the defendants owed the footballer a duty of care - in ensuring that a club has mandated medical personnel and equipment on any given match day. \"What I find interesting in this judgement is that the duty of care is not only on the club,\" said Alves. \"I find this extended application of a classic labour law principle to be very, very positive for all players.\" It is a point backed by one of the Chinemes' lawyers. \"As regards the operations of the NFF and the league body, knowing that a civil court can hold them responsible going forward is going to make a real difference,\" Sportlicitors founder Tosin Akinyemi told BBC Sport Africa. \"And if they still don't want to change, this is going to encourage other parties going forward.\" The Chineme family were themselves initially reluctant to pursue a claim. \"We never wanted to go to court, because most people will tell you 'You can't challenge the guys in authority - they are so powerful',\" Michael Chineme told the BBC. \"I felt confident and said 'We can't continue like this in this country - justice must be done'.\" Starting in December 2020, the claim took over four years to complete - with Nasarawa United not only denying negligence but also being accused of drawing out the legal process. \"The football club brought a series of preliminary objections and other applications - which were not really of good merit - to try to slow down the case,\" Akinyemi said. Among these were an unsuccessful challenge to the jurisdiction of the NICN to even hear the Chinemes' case, which the club derided as \"manifestly frivolous and gold-digging\". Meanwhile, despite the significance of a player effectively dying on their watch, neither the LMC nor NFF engaged in the case. \"This is a pattern we often observe when we have cases against federations, clubs or leagues,\" said Fifpro's Alves. \"Federations tend to believe they can enjoy some sort of impunity. What is remarkable in this case is that a state court is reminding them that they are as equal in front of the law as any other body. \"Too often federations and clubs forget that.\" Even though Nasarawa United had already been sanctioned - fined just over $15,000 (£11,200) by the NFF in 2020 - for breaching a host of rules, such as not acquiring a qualified doctor for the game, the club consistently denied wrongdoing. Claims of valid insurance and pre-season medical tests were proven false when cross-examination revealed the tests had screened for issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and typhoid rather than cardiac issues. In his ruling, Justice Haastrup said Nasarawa United \"threw every caution to the wind\" when certifying Chineme as fit to play. Nigeria is known for international stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and, further back, Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, who faced heart problems of his own . But some local players - in a sign of the atmosphere enveloping the country's domestic football - turned down a chance to support their late friend. \"I begged three players to testify,\" said Michael Chineme. \"But they were afraid of their career - that if they came, they might be threatened, they might lose their job.\" Now those self-same players are celebrating a case which the family always hoped would deliver justice \"not just for Martins, but for every other footballer\". \"I've been approached by some players and by his friends that still play,\" said Michael. \"They were like: 'Thank you for this, we never knew this was still going on, we never knew you were this resilient'.\" Along with the federation, league and match commissioner, Nasarawa United must pay the family damages, but Michael says the amount will not even cover their legal fees. That is one reason a foundation he established in his brother's name in 2022 will help footballers legally, but not financially. \"I set up Chineme Martins Football Foundation to see the little way it can help those who have been suffering these kinds of issues,\" he said. As Michael admits, the family might easily have given up the legal fight without Fifpro's support. In return, the global players' union is delighted the steadfast Chinemes may have secured a brighter future for footballers across the planet. \"There's a simple message,\" Alves said of the ruling. \"For the people involved on the pitch, this is work. People that organise these competitions have to make sure they're doing it in safe conditions.\"",

      • "content": "\"Somehow, Palpatine returned.\" It is the Star Wars meme to end all memes, used to ridicule the Emperor’s divisive return in The Rise of Skywalker. Most fans reacted negatively to Palpatine’s clone-fueled revival after his \"death\" at the end of the much-loved Return of the Jedi. But what did Ian McDiarmid, who has played Palpatine / the Emperor for over 40 years, think of the backlash? \"It seemed entirely probable that Palpatine had plan B,\" he insisted. \"Even though he was very, very badly damaged, he would be able to be put it together in some form. When I realized I had a sort of astral wheelchair, that was even better. I just had these four guys who whisked me around the studio; I can’t tell you how much fun that was. Daisy was more worried about that than anything else. And then, of course, we had to devise another makeup look, which was even more grotesque than the previous one.\" McDiarmid added, specifically on the backlash to the Emperor's return: \"Well, there’s always something, isn’t there?” he said. “I don’t read that stuff and I’m not online. So it’ll only reach me if someone mentions it. I thought there might be a bit of a fuss about bringing him back. But as I said, mine and Palpatine’s logic was entirely reasonable. This man who was horribly maimed thought maybe one day it might happen to him, and we’ve got to have a plan B. I loved the whole idea that he should come back and be even more powerful than he was before. Though this time, he had to be utterly destroyed. So I think he’s dead.” The Rise of Skywalker vaguely explains how Palpatine accomplished his grand comeback. When Kylo Ren finds him early in the movie, Emperor Palpatine appears to be a reanimated version of his dead self. So it would seem that he didn’t survive his fall at the end of Return of the Jedi. But his death clearly didn’t stop him or really even slow him down. As McDiarmid said, Palpatine had a contingency plan in place for just such a scenario. In Rise of Skywalker’s vague explanation of Palpatine’s return, Sheev quotes his ever-so-meme-able words from Revenge of the Sith as he delivers his super-villain monologue where he explains his bonkers master plan to Kylo Ren: \"The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities that some would consider to be... unnatural.\" So, ancient Sith magic. That’s how he did it. It seems unlikely that the core Star Wars fanbase will ever get on board with Palpatine’s return in The Rise of Skywalker, and would prefer to just pretend it never happened. It will be interesting to see if future Star Wars movies do the same. In November, Daisy Ridley's character Rey Skywalker was reported to be set to appear in \"several\" upcoming Star Wars films as she's been deemed the galaxy far, far away's \"most valuable cinematic asset.\" Ridley is already confirmed to be returning in the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed sequel to The Rise of Skywalker. It will tell the story of Rey as she looks to rebuild the Jedi Order roughly 15 years after the events of that film. Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100.

      • "content": "The new incarnation of the Fantastic Four is nearly ready to burst through movie theater screens — but interestingly enough, fans have yet to catch a glimpse of their next nemesis. Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, will be the upcoming film’s central villain, but he did not appear in the trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps , seemingly to keep the character’s design underwraps until release. However, it seems an eagle-eyed Marvel diehard may have inadvertently discovered a full first look at Galactus... via a leaked Lego set. Warning! Potential spoilers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps follow: According to Twitter user @blogsbrick , a “Galactus vs. The Fantastic Four” Lego set is set to hit shelves on June 1. The user also included an image of the set’s box, on which Galactus can be seen in his full, huge glory (as well as some cute tiny heroes too). @blogsbrick claimed the photographed set, which will consist of 427 pieces priced $59.99, was found “at a retail store,” but no further details were given. Though fans didn’t get a chance to see film Galactus in the debut trailer, they did get to take in an all-new version of Silver Surfer , who will be played in the new reboot by Julia Garner. As for making sure Galactus was as intimidating as he needed to be on-screen, director Matt Shakman recently opened up about how the team nailed the massive scale of the character in a way that used as little digital effect as possible. \"I didn't want to just use motion-capture for Galactus. I wanted to actually have someone there embodying the part,” he explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. “So we've built an entire costume for him, and we've done a lot of photography testing to figure out, how do you make sure that the scale is correct? How do you film Mount Rushmore?\" The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which kicks off Phase 6 of the MCU, stars Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the titular four and arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025.
