Once volume gets serious, that matters more than price or convenience. At modest scale, shared infrastructure is a bargain no team should apologize for. At high scale, it can turn into a liability that dashboard averages rarely reveal, and dedicated servers are arguably the most direct way to hand the slow end of your traffic back to the people who have to explain it. They also hand those people the failed disks and the capacity forecasts, which is where many migration plans go soft.

Why the Slowest 1% Matters

A request that drags one time in a hundred sounds like a rounding error. At 2,000 requests a second, it happens 20 times every second, to paying customers, around the clock. On a shared machine, many of those slow requests may have nothing to do with your code. Netflix engineers measured the effect on their own multi-tenant platform. When they launched one job that grabbed every processor on a machine, the slowest 1% of another job’s waits for processor time jumped from under a tenth of a millisecond to 131 milliseconds. Every workload on that server belonged to Netflix. On a public platform, your neighbors are anonymous, and a support ticket is unlikely to tell you who they are.

The practical first step is to measure wait time as well as usage. On Linux, pressure stall information reports the share of time tasks spend stalled waiting for a processor, per machine or per container. On virtual machines, the steal figure in standard tools like top shows time your machine wanted the processor but the host gave it to someone else. If either number climbs while your own traffic stays flat, a neighbor is the likeliest suspect.

A Shared Host Has No Door to Knock On

The term noisy neighbor borrows the language of apartment living, where the fix is a polite knock or, failing that, a move. Neither works well on a shared host. There’s no door to knock on, and moving to a fresh virtual machine often just swaps one set of unknown neighbors for another.

Hosting providers have noticed. Atlantic.Net’s bare metal hosting answers the problem directly by giving each customer a whole physical server. Because no other tenant’s workload competes for its processors, response times depend on your own traffic and code rather than a stranger’s.

News Traffic Breaks the Shared Bet

Shared compute rests on a wager about timing. A provider can sell the same hardware to several customers because they seldom need all of it at once. For a payroll system or a recipe site, that wager usually holds. For anything that moves with the news, it can run close to backwards. When a central bank surprises markets or a major outage takes down a household-name service, demand for news data doesn’t rise in one account. It rises in nearly every account at once, on every service that sells the data, and a few of those accounts may share your machine.

Teams that run real-time API monitoring on news feeds often see this pattern, with response times climbing around market opens and major events. Try replaying traffic from your three busiest news days of the past year against your setup. Size capacity for the slowest 1% of requests in those hours, since that’s when a slow answer costs the most.

What the Cost Numbers Show

The cost argument cuts both ways. A 2021 Andreessen Horowitz analysis of cloud costs found experts converging on a rough rule that running equivalent workloads yourself costs one-third to one-half as much as renting them in the cloud. The same analysis stresses that the math tends to favor owned hardware only at scale, and likely only for the most resource-hungry workloads.

Dropbox’s pre-IPO filing shows what that trade looks like in practice. In a single year, what the company paid its outside data center provider fell by $92.5 million as it moved onto equipment it ran itself. The same sentence also records $53 million in new depreciation, facility and support costs, the part that tends to vanish when the story gets retold. For your own comparison, price a million requests at your steady baseline, then add the costs no invoice shows, like spares, on-call time and hardware lead times.

Where Shared Compute Still Makes Sense

None of this makes shared compute the wrong default. For a young API with unknown demand, it’s usually the right one, since buying dedicated machines before you have the traffic means paying for a forecast you can’t make yet. Anyone who has read up on why API providers ration requests in the first place will recognize that a shared host rations capacity in much the same way. The difference is visibility. A public API can answer with 429 Too Many Requests and even say how long to wait, while a shared host rarely tells you that someone else used up the capacity.

Many teams running high-volume APIs take a middle path, keeping a dedicated core sized for an ordinary busy day and spilling onto rented capacity when the news turns. Even the companies most eager to leave the cloud kept 10% to 30% or more there, the Andreessen Horowitz research found. If you go hybrid, keep latency-sensitive endpoints on the dedicated core and let batch jobs and backfills do the spilling.

AI Agents Are Changing the Shape of Demand

Who is calling your API is changing too. About half the developers questioned in a survey of more than 5,700 API developers and professionals last year named excessive or unauthorized calls from AI agents as their top security worry. Thales’s 2026 Bad Bot Report adds that bots made up more than 53% of web traffic in 2025 and describes them as a persistent presence rather than something tied to specific campaigns.

Security got the headlines, but there’s a capacity story underneath. For many APIs, the old daily curve, busy at lunch and quiet by midnight, seems to be flattening into a high plateau with sudden spikes. A plateau is the load dedicated hardware prices best, but the spikes are what a fixed fleet handles worst, so the shift both strengthens and complicates the case for dedicated servers. Tag agent traffic separately and give it its own limits, so a runaway agent can’t eat the capacity your customer-facing features depend on.

Streaming Changes the Load

Client connections are changing as well. High-volume clients that have moved from polling to streaming stop hitting an endpoint every few seconds and instead hold a connection open while articles are pushed to them. For the provider, that swaps bursts of short requests for thousands of connections that stay open for hours, each one a small, standing claim on memory. A brief stall that once cost one slow response can now drop connections, and dropped clients tend to reconnect together. Ask client developers to reconnect after randomized delays, and cap how many connections a single machine will accept.

What You Take On With Dedicated Servers

On dedicated servers, the noisy neighbor disappears as an explanation, which is both the gift and the burden. Every slow request is now yours, and so is every hardware failure. Backblaze’s drive reliability data puts the lifetime failure rate across more than 350,000 hard drives at about 1.4% a year, so a fleet with 200 similar drives should expect two or three failures annually. Keep spares on hand and write the replacement steps down before the first one dies.

Capacity also stops being rented by the hour and becomes something you predict months ahead. Teams that make this work treat measurement as part of the purchase, tracking the slow end of every endpoint so they can tell a hardware ceiling from a code bug within minutes. Teams that skip that step may find they’ve swapped one invisible cause for another, with a fixed monthly bill attached.

Deciding Who Owns the Slow Minutes

On shared compute, a bad minute is something that happened to you. On a dedicated server, it’s something you built or failed to plan for. Some teams will find that clarity worth every idle processor they carry through quiet months, while others will prefer not knowing.

Before your next contract renewal, pull the slowest 1% of response times from your busiest news days and ask who owned each of those minutes. If the honest answer is someone else on the same machine, start pricing dedicated capacity for your core endpoints. The next big story will hit every news API at the same moment, so decide now whose problem the slow requests will be.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Any API that answers millions of calls a day from shared compute has, in effect, handed its worst moments to strangers.

[7

Shared Compute vs. Dedicated Servers: What Changes for High-Volume APIs?
